Though not a constant, La Mirada has the ability to cast a well-known name from time to time both on stage and backstage. Most recently, Sally Struthers appeared in “Young Frankenstein” and, before that, Hal Linden co-starred in “Grumpy Old Men.”
“We don’t really rely on stars,” McCoy says. “We’ve had just a handful over the years, cast because they’d be perfect in the role.
“They’re not doing it for the money. We certainly don’t have the payroll to pay somebody a ton of money. They want to do it because they want to do it.”
Lest anyone think La Mirada relies solely on its traditional subscription base, McCoy makes it clear the theater programs with a goal of reaching new audiences.
Racial diversity is in place in the city of La Mirada, which at the last census has a 44 percent Hispanic and 22 percent Asian population.
Thus, La Mirada has “On Your Feet!” coming up in 2023-24, and for its post-pandemic return programmed Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first hit, “In the Heights.”
