A History of Excellence Center Theatre Group is Los Angeles’ preeminent non-proﬁt theatre company. On our three stages — the Ahmanson Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum and the Kirk Douglas Theatre — we present the highest quality and broadest range of theatre: groundbreaking new works, explosive productions of the classics and hit Broadway plays and musicals. In the most current nine seasons alone, over 170 productions have been selected for presentation, including 38 world premieres. Seventeen productions have subsequently been produced in New York. With their 15 years of support, Sheri and Les Biller are longtime partners in what we do here at Center Theatre Group. They have made a tremendous impact on the organization, including launching CTG’s Corporate Circle in 2000. Sheri Biller served as its founding chair, helping galvanize support for CTG from the business community. The Corporate Circle has since provided more than $7.5 million of support to CTG programs. Raul A. Anaya, president for Bank of America’s Greater Los Angeles region, accepted the award. Here, he takes a few moments to share his background and interest in the arts. What does the partnership between Bank of America and CTG mean to you? We’ve enjoyed a longstanding relationship with CTG. It is a very important partnership for me because of the great work CTG does to enhance arts and culture within the Los Angeles community.

What was the ﬁrst play or musical you ever saw? I saw Cats in high school and really enjoyed it. What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not at the theatre or at work? I enjoy any outdoor activity — hiking, biking, walking along the beach and gardening. What show would you love to see at CTG and at which theatre? I would love to see Miss Saigon at the Ahmanson Theatre. I saw Miss Saigon many years ago and really enjoyed the production and storyline.

Which playwright or actor would make the best lunch date? What question would you deﬁnitely ask? I’m a huge fan of Al Pacino and would enjoy spending time with him over lunch so I can ask him about his acting in The Godfather and Scarface. Which theatrical talent would you most like to have? I would love to know how to act — from performing in dramas and comedies to memorizing lines to acting out various emotions. Plays or musicals? I love many types of music so I always enjoy musicals. What do theatre and banking have in common? Both theatre and banking are very much people businesses. The audience connects with the personality and energy of the actors in the play. ABOUT RUTH AND BEN Ruth Flinkman-Marandy and her husband, Ben Marandy, are dedicated philanthropists in their community. Supporting Center Theatre Group’s production of Harmony with their Artistic Director’s Circle membership seemed like a wonderful match for their philanthropic interests. The context of the show particularly appealed to Ruth, not to mention she has always been a big fan of Barry Manilow. “I grew up listening to him and watched him grow up,” she said. She even cajoled her kids to listen to him. “I deeply appreciate what he does.” A fellow singer herself, Ruth became smitten by the theatre as a child. She began performing at the age of three and a half. She sang on radio and television in New York through her teens and performed in regional theatre and at social events. She still performs to this day as a soloist and with The Songbirds, formerly the Club 100 Singers. Ruth is a deeply devoted supporter of the theatre. She has been a CTG subscriber for more than 45 years and joined the Artistic Director’s Circle in 2009. In addition to her dedication to Center Theatre Group, Ruth is on the boards of Theatre 40, American Friends of Hebrew University, American Technion Society and the American Associates of BenGurion University. She is also a member of The Music Center, Beverly Hills Theatre Guild, West Coast Jewish Theatre, Ophira Hadassah, the Board of Governors of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue.

The Greatest Band You’ve Never Heard Of Artistic Director’s Circle Members Help Bring a Forgotten Story to the Stage

he Comedian Harmonists sold millions of records, played to packed houses all over the world and starred in many ﬁlms until their career was cut short by events that profoundly changed history forever. Many have forgotten their story, but thanks to Artistic Director’s Circle members Ruth Flinkman-Marandy and Ben Marandy (see sidebar) — proud supporters of Harmony now onstage at the Ahmanson Theatre — Los Angeles audiences can experience this unforgettable true story of friendship and adversity.

A BRIGHT FUTURE The Comedian Harmonists, the real-life musical group upon which Harmony is based, were dapper and uproariously funny, but fans knew them best for their complex harmonies. Germany’s ﬁrst “boy band,” the Comedian Harmonists had a vast repertoire ranging from folk and classical music to popular songs of the day. Early in their career, they performed only three or four of their own songs as part of a larger program, but audiences wanted more. Their ﬁrst full-length concert catapulted them to stardom.

“The shouting, the clamoring of the audience — I was flabbergasted,” remembered the group’s ﬁrst tenor, Ari Leschnikoff, 45 years later. “I shed tears of joy.”

Soon they were a global sensation, traveling to Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris and the United States. In the early 1930s, just one press notice could sell out a prestigious concert hall. They became popular on radio and recordings and starred in 13 ﬁlms. They had it all. AN UNEXPECTED FINALE Then the political climate in Germany began to change, and the Comedian Harmonists found themselves on a collision course with history. Their amazing story inspired the legendary Barry Manilow and theatre veteran Bruce Sussman, longtime collaborators, to create a new musical with an original score that celebrates this extraordinary group of friends, ensuring their quest for harmony in the most discordant chapter of human history will never be forgotten. ○

You might remember first visiting The Music Center as a guest of the Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival, an annual admissionfree program specifically designed for fifth-graders. Chances are you were greeted by members of The Blue Ribbon, dressed in their red, white and blue pinafores, welcoming young minds to experience the exuberance of the performing arts. Since 1970, The Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival has served more than 700,000 children in Southern California. Members of The Blue Ribbon dedicate their time and resources to the event’s planning, funding and staffing. But that’s not all The Blue Ribbon does for L.A.’s downtown performing arts center. Since its founding in 1968, this women’s membership group has raised more than $71 million to support The Music Center and its resident companies. he Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess is set in Charleston’s fabled Catﬁsh Row, where the beautiful Bess struggles to break free from her scandalous past. Threatened by her formidable former lover, Crown, and the seductive enticements of the colorful troublemaker, Sporting Life, the only one who can rescue her is the courageous Porgy. Their relationship evolves into a deep romance that triumphs as one of theatre’s most exhilarating love stories.

Nevertheless, a national tour began in January 1936 with members of the original Broadway company, including stars Todd Duncan and Anne Brown. On the third leg of the tour, Duncan refused to perform for the segregated National Theatre in Washington, D.C. When producers balked at his request to integrate their audiences, Brown and the rest of the cast went on strike, prompting management to desegregate the National Theatre for the ﬁrst time.

This iconic masterwork now ﬁnds itself on the Ahmanson stage thanks in part to Artistic Director’s Circle member Jeanette Shammas and The Blue Ribbon, the premiere women’s support organization for The Music Center.

As part of its current tour, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess returned to the National Theatre in December 2013. ○

A HISTORY OF FIRSTS Porgy and Bess premiered at Boston’s Colonial Theatre in September 1935, the culmination of George Gershwin’s long-held dream to write the great American folk opera. A month later, the production transferred to Broadway, where it closed after only 124 performances. Critics and audiences struggled to understand the piece, which was the ﬁrst opera to blend blues, jazz and African-American spirituals.

Plenty o’ Somethin’ Shammas Shares Love for Gershwin and CTG

ntertainment has always been in Jeanette Shammas’ blood, so it’s no surprise that she has become one of Center Theatre Group’s most loyal supporters over the last few years. Her interest comes from not only her enjoyment of the arts but also from a desire to support her friend, Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. Most recently, Shammas chose to support The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess as a member of the Artistic Director’s Circle. When Ritchie arrived in Los Angeles in 2004, he and Shammas bonded over their interest in The Bowery Boys, a group of fictional New York City “tough kids” first introduced in the 1935 Broadway play Dead End. Ritchie’s first production at CTG was a revival of that play, and at the opening, Shammas shared she once lived next door to original cast member Leo Gorcey. This began their blossoming friendship.

“Seeing Jeanette always brings a smile to my face,” Ritchie said. “There aren’t many people that can say that. Whenever we get together, I’m always struck by her keen sense of humor and intelligence.”

Shammas fell in love with entertainment at an early age. At nine years old, she convinced her parents to let her be an extra for Central Casting, and she appeared in many ﬁlms until the age of 12. As she grew up, Shammas began enjoying other art forms including music and theatre. She fondly recalls seeing the movie Rhapsody in Blue, a musical biography about George Gershwin. “I remember enjoying the music and wanting to see more of what he created,” Shammas said. When Michael Feinstein performed Rhapsody in Blue in Los Angeles, Jeanette persuaded her husband, Nickolas, to see the show. “At ﬁrst he didn’t really want to go, but after the show he let me know he really enjoyed it.” Years later, Shammas met Feinstein at a Salon at the Taper and shared how he had helped introduce her husband to Gershwin and his music. Over time Shammas saw other Gershwin musicals, including The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess on Broadway. She decided to align her support with the touring production of the show after Ritchie told her he would bring it to the Ahmanson Theatre. “I really enjoy Gershwin’s music, and I am happy to be able to help make this happen for Los Angeles,” she said. Shammas is happy to see that her passion for the arts has had an impact on her family. Her granddaughter, Julia, is an internationally recognized singer, songwriter and musician. “Nick and I gave her a grand piano for her seventh birthday, and she has been playing ever since,” she said. ○

Meet Kim Bruno Downtown Arts High School Welcomes Ambitious New Principal

im Bruno, the new principal at Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts, began her career as an actor in New York and now has 26 years as an arts educator under her belt.

“I have auditioned and been cast and stood center stage and have also been denied roles that I thought I was perfect for,” she said. “I think it’s important that you have that understanding when you are working with aspiring young artists.” SHOOTING FOR THE MOON Before relocating to Los Angeles, Bruno served 11 years as principal of New York City’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where, she said, “It was always ‘shoot for the moon.’” Under her leadership, LaGuardia earned national recognition as a ﬂagship school with strong arts programming and high-quality academic instruction. Now Bruno aspires to help Cortines fulﬁll its potential.

“I think there’s a place for Cortines to be nationally recognized,” Bruno said, “and I am committed to obtaining the necessary funding to support this unique dual-mission school.”

As part of its mission to improve arts education in Los Angeles, Center Theatre Group has partnered with its Grand Avenue neighbor the Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts since it opened in 2009. Students attend live performances, participate in leadership programs and learn from professional artists in the classroom.

A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH After just one year, Bruno has already made great strides toward achieving her vision. In partnership with CalArts and The Colburn School, Cortines now offers Saturday arts classes that prepare eighth-graders for high school while helping the school learn about its incoming students and tailor its ninth-grade curriculum to their needs. Bruno also plans to partner with ﬁlm and television leaders in Los Angeles. Cortines students are the future of the entertainment industry, she said, so forging these connections makes sense. With Bruno at the helm, the Grand Avenue campus has a bright future. She speaks prudently about the needs to create rigorous, sequenced arts curricula and to secure funding, and she plans to take informed steps in pursuit of her heartfelt dream for students. “Whether they become dancers, singers, actors, doctors, lawyers, politicians or educators, I want to graduate kids who will make a difference in the world and have the courage to live their lives creatively.” ○ To learn more about Center Theatre Group’s support of the Ramón C. RISE UP SINGING:

THE RESURRECTION OF CATFISH ROW

By Lynell George When Porgy and Bess premiered on a New York stage in 1935, no one could have predicted its reach, not its indelible impact on the American psyche nor its persistently shifting position within popular culture. Grand and unprecedented, the production clocked in at a little over three hours, featured an all-black cast in its singing roles, and showcased a textured, richly atmospheric George Gershwin score that seamlessly incorporated elements of blues and jazz and spirituals into a classic operatic structure. Ground-breaking on every level, the production closed after 124 performances, good for opera, but not for Broadway. Gershwin was not simply penning an adventurous score, but recasting the possibilities for American theatre. Although his hopes were high, much attention was given over to qualifying just what the production was: Gershwin preferred the idea of a Broadway run rather than an opera-hall setting; the term “opera” itself was strategically finessed, embroidered into a more homespun vernacular, “folk opera.” The completed piece represented what he considered to be his most ambitious work, but George Gershwin did not live to see the work fully understood or warmly embraced. After his death in 1937, Porgy and Bess would go on to be produced internationally, in scores of memorable versions on stage and screen. It would take 40 years for it to be considered a legitimate opera, first performed in 1976 in a Houston Grand Opera production and finally making its way to The Metropolitan Opera a decade later. know edges of it — a vague outline of the plot, its characters. Or perhaps stray lines — or choruses — from songs that have become part of the Great American Songbook — a wash of haunting melodies that tell the story of Porgy, the lame black beggar, and his attempts to rescue the troubled Bess from her domineering and violent lover, Crown, and the flashy neighborhood drug dealer, Sporting Life.

Into this tangled history steps Diane Paulus, artistic director of the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University. Known for her radical re-imaginings which turn work either on its head or inside out (Hair, 2008; Pippin,2013) — Paulus was approached by producer Jeffrey Richards with an intriguing offer. Richards had been in ongoing conversation with both the Ira and George Gershwin estates as well as with estate representatives of the opera’s librettist DuBose Heyward and his wife Dorothy. Michael Strunsky, sole trustee of the Ira Gershwin Estate, had been dreaming of a Broadway-musical style retelling of Porgy and Bess since the early ‘90s. He was looking for something that would interpret the story — in flow and form — for a 21st century audience. In a 2012 Columbia Review interview, Paulus noted: “He said, ‘The opera is going to exist forever … We are asking you to do a version of the show that can coexist with the opera — specifically for the musicaltheatre stage.’ She went on to say, “That was something that the estate was very passionate about.”

and would ultimately be over time, still felt bound up inside of it. It would be Paulus’ task to tease the essence out, along with the psyche of the characters — their deep impulses and desires. Much of it she realized would be altering the storytelling lens — a task that would begin by looking back to the origins — the seeds of the story on the page as well as the dramatic team’s own process of breathing life into it.

Heyward had snipped the story from the news pages — a crime-sheet item about a disabled man who had committed a crime of passion. In the very bones of the tragedy, Gershwin saw rich possibilities — a vehicle which would enable him to incorporate his jazz influences but, as well, would dip into rich southern black traditions — blues, work songs, call and response. “Because Porgy and Bess deals with Negro life in America it brings to the operatic form elements that have never before appeared in opera,” Gershwin explained, “I have adapted my method to utilize the drama, the humor, the superstition, the religious fervor, the

In 1926, after George Gershwin finished reading the last paragraph of DuBose Heyward’s novel, Porgy, he sat down to compose what could be considered the prelude to his most important work — a letter to the book’s author. Gershwin hoped to entice the novelist into a collaboration. As it turned out Heyward’s wife, Dorothy, was already secretly at work on a play based on her husband’s story. By the summer of 1934, Gershwin repaired to South Carolina to visit the Heywards and began imagining what an operatic version of Heyward’s Porgy might look, feel and, most importantly, sound like.

For all of Gershwin’s intentions, Porgy and Bess, from the very start, had been nothing short of polarizing — both among audiences and critics. In some corners, it was lauded as revolutionary, and in others, derided as a collection of condescending stereotypes. While it was eventually embraced as an American classic, the work’s journey over the decades has been marked by critique and controversy. Paulus knew immediately that she was not just up for it, but was energized by the challenge.

The first reactions were mixed. But in time, the saga of Porgy and Bess would gather a loyal following, ultimately becoming a fixture of standard operatic repertoire.

dancing and irrepressible high spirit of the race. In doing this I have created a new form.” The question for Paulus wasn’t how to improve on a classic, rather it was how to shape and shade it. She hoped to inject it with an immediacy that would bring the story out of the shadows of antiquated mores. She had a grand task. While the Gershwins and the Heywards saw their work as a way of elevating black life, language and song to the operatic stage, the resulting (and lingering) effect was much more complicated — and sometimes hit squarely at a still-raw nerve. Even performers struggled with the material and their ambivalence with their roles. Famously, mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry, one of the many “Besses,” characterized her experience as a tug-ofwar with the past: “I thought it beneath me. My way of dealing with it was to see that it was really a piece of American history, whether we liked it or not. Whether I sing it or not, it was still going to be there.” Getting to that uncomfortable “it” — that American history — and the filter through which it was told — is what Paulus hoped to address. She convened a team that included Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-

Lori Parks, composer Diedre L. Murray and choreographer Ronald K. Brown — to walk through the old rambling structure — to see what could be modified, amplified, saved or discarded. To bring Catfish Row to life, Brown spent time thinking about how people would have moved — how they would have walked to church, danced or trotted across the street — what story would that movement tell an audience about place as well as each character? Murray hoped to peer into the soul of Bess, making her less an “accessory” — an inanimate object/ prize pulled between Crown and Porgy. And for Parks’ part, one of the elements that struck her ear, like a mis-sung note, was the improvised dialect. Part of telling one’s story begins with the voice — the rhythms, pauses and stresses.

at arms-length for nearly 90 years. The question would be: Who would they be if they could speak for themselves? What — or who — would rise up? Walking into the heart of that beloved text — really an American keepsake — Paulus knew would raise hackles, and it did. But trying to travel toward the truth — any truth — often presents a rutted, uncertain road. In this journey, what Paulus learned, in indisputable, potent ways, was that the story and people of Catfish Row continue to deeply resonate, prick at raw nerves. The process has shown her that audiences care much more about this piece of Americana than she could have ever imagined. The Heywards and the Gershwins were on to something — a beginning — to build a bridge toward understanding.

The summer that Gershwin paid his visit to the Heywards, he stayed on Folly Island, some miles from Charleston where he could survey the comings and goings of the Gullah people who resided nearby on James Island. What Gershwin — and previously the Heywards — gleaned from their research would become the prototype for Catfish Row.

This reimagining might be best, as choreographer Brown recently suggested, to think of as “less a fixing than an opportunity for a deeper understanding,” not just of the characters or the people who brought them all to life so many years ago, but perhaps most critically, of ourselves. ○

In the late ’20s George became fascinated by DuBose Heyward’s novel Porgy, recognizing it was a perfect vehicle for opera using jazz and blues idioms. Porgy and Bess opened in Boston on September 30, 1935, and had its Broadway debut two weeks later. In 1937 George was at the height of his career. 1940) was a native and life-long resident of Charleston, South Carolina. In 1923 Heyward married Dorothy Hartzell Kuhns (1890-1961), an aspiring author from Ohio. His novel Porgy, was published with great success in 1925. Dorothy inspired, and collaborated in, the transformation of Porgy into a play, which ran a total of 367 performances on Broadway. The Heywards later collaborated with George and Ira Gershwin in the creation of the opera, Porgy and Bess, contributing the libretto, based largely on the play, and co-writing many of the songs, including “Summertime.” IRA GERSHWIN (Lyrics), the first songwriter to receive a Pulitzer Prize (Of Thee I Sing, 1932), was born in New York in 1896. He wrote hundreds of songs for Broadway and Hollywood, the majority with his brother, George, but many in collaboration with composers Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Harry Warren, Burton Lane and Vernon Duke, among others. Nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Song, Ira also took great pride in his contributions to Porgy and Bess (1935), and in his acclaimed book, Lyrics on Several Occasions (1959). BAKER (Producing Director) is now in his 24th season at CTG. enter Theatre Group is proud to recognize Robey Theatre Company, now celebrating 20 years of developing, exploring and producing plays about the global black experience. Since its inception, Robey has honored the legacy of actor and activist Paul Robeson, whose life inspired the story now onstage at the Mark Taper Forum, The Tallest Tree in the Forest. Through its Donor Theatre Adventures, CTG will join Robey in celebrating its 20th anniversary this spring by taking a group of donors to see Knock Me a Kiss, produced by Robey Theatre Company in association with Los Angeles Theatre Center. Written by Charles Smith and directed by Dwain A. Perry, Knock Me a Kiss is a fictional account inspired by the actual events surrounding the 1928 marriage of W.E.B. Du Bois’ daughter Yolande to one of Harlem’s great poets, Countee Cullen. This marriage marked the height of the Harlem Renaissance and was viewed as the perfect union of talent and beauty. It united the daughter of America’s foremost black intellectual and co-founder of the NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, with a young poet whose work was considered to be one of the ﬂagships for the New Negro movement.
