makers themselves will be here is so exciting to us,” says Lapp. “They are true legends in the wine community. We’ll have a red carpet, a meet-andgreet—make the most of it. The experience will be much more than just coming to a show.” Ticket buyers can choose from a wine-tasting in the lobby at each performance, featuring different local wineries each night; a blind wine-tasting experience on Saturdays between the matinee and evening performances, with scoring led by a sommelier; or an onstage wine-tasting before showtime, on the Chateau Montelena wine cave set, where they can taste Chateau Montelena and Gustavo wines.
Adding to the story of the rise of the California wines is a musical score heavily influenced by the groovy rock ‘n’ roll scene of 1970s Northern California. “It’s a real love letter to the Bay Area of the ’70s,” says Lapp. “A rock-flavored score reminiscent of Carlos Santana, the Grateful Dead and Grace Slick.”
Beck says he and Lapp would like to build CCAE Theatricals’ season into a full five shows, always with a world premiere in the mix. This fall, they plan to produce The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, based on the bestselling novel. “The word is getting out to the North County community that they don’t have to drive to [central] San Diego to see great shows,” Beck says. “We want to make the theater program at CCAE something we can all be proud of, and build an audience and supporter base specifically for the Theatricals.”
“Bottle Shock! The Musical” runs at California Center for the Arts, Escondido, July 7-23. For tickets and more info: artcenter.org
