Business Smarts

Discovering Your Strengths AS A BUSINESS WOMAN.

Many female entrepreneurs begin a business and tend to wander around the idea of what they want to do. If you are known as thorough, picky, inquisitive, argumentative...spin those features into what we strategists call, your “distinctive competence”- your core strengths. The chance of you succeeding in a business idea that is based on your core strength is higher than other business ideas that you just happen to end up pursuing. You are also happier and more empowered discovering your core strengths and developing businesses around those features. I have encountered female entrepreneurs who have tremendous experience, skills, passion for one thing, but end up in a totally different area of business. One of my protégés, a very passionate fashion designer, ended up in a policy advocacy job for years, until she discovered her strength as a fashion designer and empowered herself to step out and pursue her strength. Another colleague dreams about writing a series of children’s books that appeal to a Caribbean audience, but is stuck in her job as a trade negotiator. I have another friend who was a lawyer, she made quite a successful practice, however, her family was a long line of teachers, and she was so experienced in pedagogy that she was always tutoring and coaching her colleagues. She discovered her passion through her online teaching service and has empowered herself as a business woman. Ladies, there are so much other examples of business women who have discovered their strengths. Here are some interesting questions to ask yourself, if you are serious about discovering your strengths: Capabilities: What resources can I access? I.e. skills; equipment; talents; networks. Is your family knowledgeable in specific areas? Do you know people who can give you an advantage? Do you own a patent, or some special family heirloom? Competencies: What’s unique about you? Can people copy your uniqueness? If you took an unexpected 1 year break, what would people miss most? This is the question that stumps many ladies. If you don’t know, ask somebody close to you. Brand: What would people say as the first thing when they think 10 about you? What is your “brand”? ►►► J

Now ladies, here is an exercise. Make a list from the three questions above and rank them. Your strength will appear as the combination of the top capability; competence and brand features.

That’s the easy part. Now commit to revising that list at least twice per year. Knowing your strength is half the issue, it is important to know your weaknesses/ limitations. I did not focus on your weaknesses, but it is important to understand your limitations, and develop strategies to address them, and in so doing, empower yourself even more. It was a pleasure talking with you through Classy Woman Magazine this year. In the upcoming “business smarts” for 2014 we will explore how to unlock the market potential in your strength. So, as I usually say, keep engaging your Profit-DRIVE.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS I am at a place in my life where I enjoy the benefits of being in a healthy relationship. With what I know now, Looking back, I can clearly see what I could have done better, had I known a few things. It is possible to find the perfect person for you and have a healthy relationship, but there are some things you need to know. It is my hope that I can spare someone a few years of headache.

much younger, before all the children and before your mom moved in. I am not saying you should not find new ways to keep the spark, but expecting things to be the same and not expecting realistic life changes, is setting your relationship up for failure. Expect the changes and plan for the changes, instead of arguing about the changes.

I wish I knew I was so amazing….Guess what! You are too! You have within you, all you need to live a balanced life. All you need is to develop your skills and know when and how to access what you need. There is no need to look to your spouse for your supply of love, acceptance and all that other good stuff. It is okay to share in each other’s love supply but spend some time and get to know yourself. At this point you will be fit for, and can enjoy the benefits of a balanced relationship.

I wish I knew that a wife and a mom are separate people….truth be told, a lot of men are not relationship ready, but I guess you would say neither are a lot of women. I bought into the idea that your husband is like a third child and they need you. Oh no! Again…a wife and a mother are two different people. The responsibilities of a wife is enough on its own, save the mothering for the children. If you have an immature husband, support him in growing so he can become his best and be a better husband but do not become his mom, it does the relationship no good.

I wish I knew being vulnerable was not a deadly disease … Guess what? Your spouse has insecurities too and so does everyone else. In this area, you are not alone. … If you are open, honest and willing to be vulnerable, this makes for a better relationship, why? When you do, you will see that you have greatness in you. You will discover you do not need others as much as you think you do.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP GROUP

I wish I knew that people change…I know it sounds silly and you are probably thinking I was silly for not knowing that people change. I can almost hear you saying “Everyone knows that as you grow you change.” But guess what, we know it, but in relationships, we do not normally act from that knowledge. I would say we know it in theory. Have you ever had that fight where you are fussing at your spouse for changing? “We use to go out when we just met and now all we do is sit around the house, you don’t even bring me flowers anymore.” Well…that was when you were

Parenting 101

Train up a child.

These stories are not the truth of the actual child in the picture but they represent the voice of children all over the world please make sure this child is not in your home.

“Hi guys I know you cannot

hear me but I feel scared when I hear you fighting. It makes me sad and as soon as I can, I am going to let you know. In words or by my actions. I wish you would not fight in front of me.”

“Hey mom, do you want to know why I am mad at you? When I could not speak you did not ask dad the hard questions for me, instead, I heard you fighting your own battle with him day in, day out, with little or no consideration for me. Hi dad, I can understand why you separated from mom, but why did you cut me out of your life?”

“If I did not have this pretty dress my family could have more money, but where I am from little girls are princesses, we do not wear rags. Mmm!! Probably if I learn to use the potty before my naturally created developmental stage then mom would not fuss at me so much about the expense of diapers. “I’m thinking, I’m thinking!! I know it is my fault, but I am going to stay here until I come up with a solution to not being the problem.

“Regardless of what you think, I am nothing like my ‘Dead Beat daddy’ as I hear you refer to him. I am all things positive and full of life! What you say to me does matter to my future so please do not take my star away from me because you are mad at my daddy.”

Thanksgiving Dress Rehearsal... “Practice Makes Perfect” Turkey Tips. (BPT) - The holidays are approaching and before you know it, you'll be thinking about that daunting task of cooking a turkey. This holiday season, make sure your bird impresses all the guests and relatives by conducting a dress rehearsal for your turkey. More than 88 percent of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving, according to a National Turkey Federation survey. But before doing so, why not do a dry run and prepare a turkey, or try a smaller bird like chicken, using a brining technique that is sure to be a crowd pleaser?

What's the secret behind brining? Brining has a tenderizing and moisturizing effect. The brine is absorbed and diffused throughout the meat as it soaks overnight. In addition, Roberts explains that soy sauce has a savory effect that seals in the turkey flavor and moisture. "Brining makes a big difference when you're roasting meat. You'll have the juiciest bird you've ever tasted," says Roberts. But, as we all know, a turkey isn't the only thing on the kitchen table - check out some recipes here that will leave your taste buds craving for more.

It's the hot new culinary trend that's got everyone from celebrity chefs to home cooks buzzing. But even though brining may be the latest technique to sweep kitchens, it's hardly new. Mankind has been brining since ancient times. It probably started out, hundreds of millennia ago, as a way of preserving seafood with sea salt. The technique has come a long way since, and now food lovers everywhere, in typical what's-old-is-new-again fashion, are rediscovering the benefits of brining.

Savory Turkey Brine

Think you don't have the tools to brine? Chef Helen Roberts, director of culinary development at Kikkoman, has perfected the turkey brine. The brine is simple: salt, sugar, water, dried spices and the magic ingredient: soy sauce. Pull out your refrigerator drawer or a large, deep bucket to brine your bird. After you've stirred your ingredients and placed your turkey in the liquid, let the brine work its magic overnight.

(Recipe for a 16 to 24 pound turkey)

2 gallons cold water 10 ounces Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce 1/2 cup kosher salt 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons dried sage 2 tablespoons dried celery seed 1 tablespoon dried thyme The night before roasting, remove giblets and turkey neck; rinse turkey inside and out. In a large stock pot or 5 gallon bucket, mix water with remaining ingredients. Stir well until all the salt is dissolved. Place turkey in the pot, cover with a lid and refrigerate overnight or at least 8 hours. Remove turkey from the brine, rinsing well. Follow your regular cooking instructions.

Brining isn't just for meat though. Brine veggies for a rich, savory taste. Perhaps one of the trendiest veggies, Brussels sprouts, are a prime candidate for a soy sauce brine. Sick of the same old side dishes? Now that you've brined your turkey, get creative with your side dishes too. Put a spin on classic mashed potatoes with the Wasabi Mashed Potatoes recipe found on kikkomanusa.com. The spice and heat will balance out the creamy texture of the mashed potatoes. If you have leftover turkey, try a completely new dish instead of just reheating. Keep enjoying your juicy turkey by adding to a stir fry, include in a salad or in a tetrazzini. For leftover mashed potatoes, use panko to transform into crunchy, warm Panko Mashed Potato Cakes. Have you ever wondered ... why turkey for Thanksgiving? Turkeys became a Thanksgiving staple after the Native Americans introduced turkey to the Pilgrims back in 1621 during the first Thanksgiving meal. As you prepare to celebrate the holidays, try this brining recipe to keep turkey juicy and moist, and you are bound to enjoy a wonderful meal with friends and family. Article By Brandpoint Media.
