HOOKING HEARTS AND MINDS: Fishing's Future

By Dr. Kimberly Selber

In the fast-paced, screen-dominant world of the 21st century, there's a growing need to reconnect individuals—especially younger generations—with family and the natural world. Amidst this call, one man stands out for his dedication to environmental education and the preservation of both the family and a timeless pastime: fishing. Through his non-profit organization Fishing's Future, Shane Wilson is casting a wide net for change.

The Heartbeat of Fishing's Future

More than just an enthusiastic angler, Shane Wilson is an empathetic visionary on a mission. Acknowledging the chasm dividing families in our fast-paced society, he established Fishing's Future in 2007 on South Padre Island, a refuge where nature and humanity intertwine. “It is not just about teaching the mechanics of baiting a hook or casting a line,” said Wilson. “It's about fostering family bonding, promoting outdoor activities, and cultivating an understanding of our responsibilities towards the environment.”

From hosting family fish camps and children's fishing events to running educational programs endorsing ethical practices such as 'Catch and Release,' Fishing’s Future has blossomed into a transformative platform. Now with more than 70 chapters across the United States and Great Britain and over one million participants, Fishing's Future is setting in motion a tidal wave of change, equipping today's youth and families to be the stewards of tomorrow's environment.

A Ripple Effect

Upon witnessing the enthusiasm of 11-year-old Silas, the one-millionth participant in Fishing's Future, Wilson felt a new surge of inspiration. "It's time to extend our reach to those in need – those with special needs, veterans, survivors of domestic violence," Wilson asserts with a steadfast gaze. A man of faith, he believed that a sign would illuminate his path forward.

And indeed, it did, in the form of a rather salty man, Tim Lippoldt, bound to a wheelchair racing down Padre Blvd.’s bike lane. This fortuitous meeting would profoundly transform both of their lives.

A Testimony of Resilience

“A Hummer fell on me about six years ago and left me paralyzed from the waist down,” recalls Captain Tim Lippoldt. “I wasn’t in the best frame of mind.” Wilson stopped Lippoldt in the street, gave him his business card, and said, “I need you.” Lippoldt laughed and replied, “I’m a guy in a wheelchair. Nobody needs me.” But that couldn’t have been further from the truth.

Together, Wilson and Lippoldt breathed life into the ICAN, a uniquely designed vessel built to accommodate wheelchair users and those confined to medical beds. Today, Lippoldt, a Port Isabel native and lifelong angler, helms the ICAN with pride and purpose.

Unity in Action

Armed with his effervescent optimism, Wilson attracts those who share his vision. "We had a lead engineer from Disney assist us in designing a lift that enables our passengers to immerse themselves in the water," Wilson exclaims. "The pure joy on their faces, mirrored by their families, as they experience the water is an immeasurable treasure."

Fishing’s Future, supported by grants and personal donations, offers these life-altering experiences free of charge. Wilson personally engages with each family in advance to gauge their needs, ensuring a memorable and comfortable experience. "Just last week, I connected with a young man who is paraplegic, blind, and has use of only one hand," Wilson shares, "I left a reel with him to practice ahead of our adventure."

Wilson fondly recounts the tale of WWII Navy veteran Lloyd Jaeger, whose daughter requested a fishing trip for her father's 95th birthday. "He hadn't been able to fish for ages. It was a beautiful experience," Wilson reminisces, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction.

Currently, the ICAN is able to host one family excursion a week. “We hope to be taking two trips a week soon,” Wilson said. “Fundraising is critical to making that happen.”

Celebrating Strength and Resolve

The conviction of the ICAN's captain is unwavering. "I have my life back. Before, I was just going in circles," Lippoldt confesses. "I don’t want to do anything else, ever." Together, the duo crafted the motto, "I CAN. I DID. I WILL AGAIN," epitomizing the transformative power of positivity, ingenuity, and faith.

Through Shane Wilson's inspiring journey, Fishing's Future and the ICAN program continue to touch lives and inspire hearts, reminding us all of the profound power of connection—to nature, to each other, and to our shared future.
