Non-Profit Spotlight - Latinas In Progress

NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT

LATINAS IN PROGRESS©

Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas’ esteemed education series Latinas in Progress© (LIP) collaborates with universities and colleges across Texas to prepare graduating high school Latinas for achieving their dreams of a college degree. LIP not only acclimates students to the rigors of college but equips them with vital tools that will enrich their personal and professional lives. Graduates of the program are provided exclusive access to scholarships given by grants, partners, universities and HWNT members. Every year, HWNT seeks Latina students from Hidalgo, Starr and Cameron Counties who are entering 12th grade in the fall and who wish to obtain a higher education and are capable of doing so with appropriate support and mentoring.

The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas (HWNT) is a non-profit, statewide organization established in 1986. HWNT’s purpose is to seek to promote the advancement of women in public, corporate, and civic life through education, personal, and professional development. HWNT and its eight statewide chapters unite to celebrate the positive image and values of its Hispanic heritage and to empower women across the great State of Texas.

In 2008, the state HWNT adopted the Latinas in Progress© (LIP) program. HWNT-RGV LIP strives to familiarize participants with college life and the tools to succeed in their personal and professional life. The program is a series of free seminars hosted at local universities and colleges. LIP is designed to encourage young women to stay in school and continue on to college. In addition to helping students prepare for college, the program also incorporates detailed sessions about financial aid opportunities. The seminars are designed to build leadership skills, life skills, and personal development through workshops. For more information, to be a part of this program, or to donate, please call 956-524-2014 or visit www.hwntrgv.org.
