ETIQUESTIONS

Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa

I have been invited to attend a Spring wedding, and I am hoping you can give me some advice as to what to wear.

This is such a great question. First, it is important to know the level of formality for the wedding you are attending. One great way to determine the dress code, without asking the couple, is to check out the location of the wedding and consider the time of day the wedding will take place. You can plan for more formal as the time gets later in the day. Spring often calls for a less formal aesthetic anyway, so explore different colors and patterns, especially if it is an outdoor wedding. Generally, if the couple is planning a black-tie wedding, they will state that on the invitation. Otherwise, pick a colorful and pretty dress for women and a light-colored suit for men.

What do you do if you are not drinking wine but attending an event with wine glasses on the table. Is it ok to turn your glass upside down?

It is ok not to drink wine at an event. Just don’t make a big deal of saying you don’t drink. Simply place your fingertips on the rim of the glass and say, “Not today, thank you.” This implies no judgment of those who wish to drink wine.

I recently attended a gala event. A friend of mine was talking on her phone, and she was using the speaker. Is it ok to talk on a speakerphone when you are at an event?

The general rule is not to use speakerphones unless you are in your private office or other private space. Always alert the person you are speaking with that others are present and can hear.
