PUBLISHER’S LETTER

The holiday season in Manhattan is unmatched. The conversion from November into December is quite noticeable as lights and décor seem to pop-up overnight. An exciting feeling seems to grow inside all of us as wander through the city. I look forward to this time of year and the great memories it has created over the decades. By popular demand, welcome to our New York winter issue. We are best known for our Hamptons issues in the summer, but wanted to publish an issue in the city to please our loyal readers. In the future, every winter we will publish a holiday issue. Many holiday events are on my schedule this month, and I’m excited for family time too. Even holiday shopping can be fun in small doses. As we near the end of the year with the start of 2019 weeks away, I can’t help but think ahead to warmer weather and long days on the beach in the Hamptons. Have a great holiday season!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

This is the magical season of lights when all seems possible. The best part of facing the winter chill is getting out of the cold and enjoying cozying up at home with hot cocoa. Another fun activity is designing menus for gatherings. It’s the perfect time to host family and friends and cook up a storm. Recently, I have been focusing on creating meals that feature a lot more vegetables. The funny thing about growing as a person and experiencing life is the moment when you become aware of your place in the world and that you can make a difference. What we do affects the planet as well as those around us. I recently learned that animal agriculture is the number one threat to overall wildlife extinction through the encroachment of land. The way we can all make a huge impact on this is by shifting our habits and eating only one meal with animal protein or completely becoming vegan. If you love orangutans, the best thing to do is not consume any products that contain palm oil. Deforestation to make room for palm plantations is responsible for over 100,00 orangutan deaths and the toll is still climbing. During this season of sharing and happiness, I think one of the greatest pleasures is knowing that we can make a difference. Whether contributing through charity donations, mindful living, or even just becoming an activist through Instagram posts, people are listening and lives are being affected! You and all your choices matter. Have a happy and healthy season, Devorah Rose

INTRODUCING THE FLEX BRUSH REVOLUTIONARY NEW HAIR TOOL by liZabEth ZinDEl

Angelo David, Jacob Guttman

A

year ago, the celebrity stylist Angelo David was on the beach in Aruba. “I watched women come out of the ocean and try to comb through their hair with paddle brushes,” he said. He felt pained by watching people destroy their hair as they yanked rigid brushes through knots, tearing ends, and destroying roots. “That was the moment I came up with my idea for a big beach brush,” he said. After returning to New York City, Angelo partnered with Jacob Guttman, the founder and CEO of Creative Pro Hair Tools. “He makes my Angelo David mix-bristle paddle brushes. I told him about my idea for a beach brush, and we decided to collaborate,” he said. The innovative minds worked together on creating an all-purpose tool that detangles safely and promotes hair health and growth. After one year of development, they launched The Flex Brush this past spring. “It’s the most forgiving brush on the market today. Once you have it in your hands, you’ll understand why it’s so different from a traditional brush. It’s a game changer,” Angelo said.

Designed for both wet and dry hair, the brush bends to follow the contours of your head, massaging your scalp and stimulating the production of natural oils. Its vents allow heat to pass through, so blow drying won’t damage it. Coated in all-natural rubber, the handle is comfortable and easy to grip. The versatile brush works for hair that is curly, fine, delicate or thick. It’s also a perfect match for people who have wigs, hair extensions, or a sensitive scalp. Many parents love using the brush for detangling children’s hair, as well. A perfect companion to The Flex Brush is The Flex Detangle Spray, a revolutionary leave-in conditioner that increases flexibility to decrease damage during styling and detangling. “You spray it on your hair when you get out of the shower, pool, or ocean. It doesn’t have to be part of the system, but it’s a great add-on,” Angelo said. A few months before The Flex Brush was introduced to the market, Angelo visited the same place in Aruba where he had come up with the idea for the brush. “My wife said to me, ‘You first talked about the brush on this beach, and a year later we are on the same beach and you’re about to launch the product at the Jacobs Javits Center,’ ” Angelo recalled. Angelo had frequented the Javits Center’s International Beauty Show many times before, but this was the first time he attended as a participant. “It was great to see how my peers in the beauty industry embraced the product and were wowed by it. Someone would come by the booth and buy a brush, and then they would come back with their friends to buy it,” Angelo said. This has been a busy year for the entrepreneur. In addition to The Flex Brush, Angelo has recently relaunched his Hair Detox line. “We are relaunching it with a new formula and three different approaches to it,” he said. The Hair Detox line was first created by Angelo after being asked by his clients what vitamins they should take for their hair. Social Life

To help answer the question, he designed a doctor-formulated herbal supplement for both men and women. The daily capsules are perfect for people wanting to maintain healthy hair as well as for those experiencing hair loss. “Forty-five percent of women have a hair thinning problem,” Angelo said. He recently appeared in a hidden camera exposé story on New York salons that claim to help people with hair loss and hair thinning issues. Angelo David Salon was the only salon that successfully met the client’s needs. As soon as you enter Angelo’s salon on Madison Avenue, you get the sense that you are in the presence of a visionary in the beauty industry. Placed in the center of the space is Angelo’s couture hair boutique, a huge wall that showcases many samples of high-end hair pieces. Angelo is unafraid to place a woman’s dreams and concerns for her hair out in the wide open. “It’s no longer taboo to talk about hair, wigs, and extensions. It’s part of red carpets, movies, theater, and everyday wear,” he said. The couture hair boutique is an interactive experience for clients. “It lets them touch and feel the hair. Take it off the shelf. They say, ‘Oh, I didn’t know this existed. Wow, this is what celebrities do,’ ” Angelo said. It also offers inspiration for how you can alter your hairstyle instantly. “Women don’t want to wait a year to change their look. We’ve become a society of how do we get what we want now. I give them that experience on every level,” Angelo said. “Let’s say you want a bang, but you don’t want to cut your hair. You can choose a clip-on bang from the hair boutique wall. Then we color, SocialLifeMagazine.com

highlight, and trim it for a custom-blended match. We attach your bang, and there you go.” Angelo David has earned a reputation as the “Vera Wang of hair couture.” “Women want the best of the best and that’s what I sell,” he said. He has found a niche within the wig-making industry, which is experiencing a resurgence. The salon is a magnet for discerning clients who seek glamorous and fully-customized wigs, couture hair extensions, hairpieces, toppers, clip-ins, ponytails, fillers, and bangs. It is also sought after by women who are suffering from thinning hair and hair loss. Every week, Angelo offers his clients transformations that change their lives. All the pieces are made of 100% human hair and are designed onsite by wig tailors to match each client’s hair texture, type, and color. “The wig tailors can customize and alter hair just for you,” Angelo said. Looking back on his rich and textured career, Angelo said, “I’m a veteran in the industry with prestigious clientele and a salon on Madison Avenue. I’ve become an expert in haircare because I live and breathe it every day. I am always looking for new ideas and I love being a pioneer in what I do.” Angelo David Salon 420 Madison Avenue, 2nd Floor angelo@angelodavid.com angelodavid.com 212.883.6620 w You can purchase The Flex Brush at theflexbrush.com

RESORT MUST-HAVES SUN, SAND & SEA BAGS By Blaire Bass

S

ocial Life scouted out the best in beach bags and landed with the fun and fabulous Sea Bags. For those of you unfamiliar with the stylish totes made from reclaimed sail cloth: the brand was founded almost 20 years ago in the Old Port district of Portland, Maine. Donning fashionistas in a diverse line of totes, bags, and other carry-friendly goods, Sea Bags makes extensive use of reclaimed sail cloth in its products. Sails that have been reclaimed after seasons at sea have earned unique marks and colorations that enhance the weathered charm of these handcrafted gems. The best part is, like any good sail, this material does not absorb water. Leave it on the beach, drop it in the pool, spill your mineral water or green juice, and voila, it’s just a wipe away from being dry. Here are a few of our favorite (sea) things. To learn more about Sea Bags and the stories its sails tell, go to seabags.com, or visit at 25 Custom House Wharf in Portland, ME, or at their retail stores in Freeport, Camden, and Rockland, ME; Portsmouth, NH; Newburyport, Rockport, Chatham, Mashpee, Oak Bluffs, Boston, and Chestnut Hill, MA; Mystic, CT; Greenport, NY; Cape May, NJ; Annapolis, MD; Newport, RI; and Vero Beach, FL.

$225 The casual luxury bag. Chebeague is the largest island in Casco Bay, but you won’t find a movie theater, sports bar, or grand hotel on this quiet, unspoiled oasis. It’s a highlight for anyone cruising Maine’s coast. This collection is sized to fit all airline carry-on requirements, made with premium leather handles, a canvas bottom and recycled sail.

CHRISTMAS QUODDY HEAD WINE BAG $40 Light up your next holiday gathering with an iconic lighthouse festooned with a Christmas wreath. Since 1808, this beacon has guided mariners through the Quoddy Narrows of Maine. Let it lead you to holiday toasts with friends and family. ANGELO DAVID PISACRETA CELEBRITY HAIR STYLIST & LEADING HAIR-LOSS EXPERT By Lillian Langtry

W

orld-renowned hairstylist Angelo David Pisacreta is one of New York’s leading authorities on fine and thinning hair. He has been transforming the hair of men and women who have a range of style challenges for over 25 years. At his luxury salon, located on Madison Avenue, he and his team have elevated hairdressing to a true couture art form. The highly skilled staff at Angelo David Salon not only creates highly customized haircuts, color designs, and styles, they can completely transform anyone’s look with Angelo David couture hair extensions, fillers, additions, bangs, or wigs. The salon has seven private rooms for discrete, highly personalized consultations. Hair experts sample strands of your own hair, so that your new couture hair can be identically matched in texture, density, thickness, color, and wave pattern. After your customized hair has been added, your natural hair is cut and styled for flawless blending. Whether you want to conceal a thinning area, go from short to long instantly, add lush thickness, conceal premature balding with a toupee, or simply try out bangs for day or two, all it takes is one appointment at Angelo David Salon. Angelo and his team of experts often work with those who are experiencing thinning hair or hair loss. His clients include cancer survivors and those undergoing chemotherapy, as well as clients experiencing hair loss due to other causes, including genetics, pregnancy, medical issues, stress, unhealthy lifestyles, or mechanical hair stress caused by pulled styling. By offering personalized, in-depth consultations, Angelo and his team aim to conceal, prevent—or when possible—reverse hair loss, regardless of the reason. Angelo says, “Whatever stage of hair loss a client is experiencing, we focus on three things: prevent, correct, and maintain.” Angelo learned the craft of hairstyling at a very early age from his father, Carmine, who was a pioneer in designing men’s hair pieces,

as well as an award-winning competition hairdresser and a salon owner. Naturally, Angelo found a niche within the wig-making industry and went on to design his own couture hair, which is 100% human hair that is customized for each client. “Hair extensions and hair pieces are part of our culture and our industry now,” says Angelo. “They are no longer a secret of the rich and famous—they are everyday hair-wear that’s within reach for every man and woman. To maintain the health of any hair type, Angelo developed his own line of VOL hair products, which include a volumizing shampoo, conditioner, conditioning spray, and a dry shampoo. These products instantly boost volume without the use of questionable ingredients. They are sulfate- and sodium chloride-free, and contain natural hair-loving ingredients like honey extract for moisturizing, anti-oxidants to prevent damage from free radicals, and silk amino acids to build protein and strengthen hair. Angelo created his own line of hairbrushes made specifically for use on hair extensions, hair additions, and hairpieces. They contain the ideal balance of naturally conditioning boar bristles and gently Social Life

separating nylon bristles to promote healthier hair and stimulate the scalp. Continuing his focus on maintaining a full head of healthy hair, Angelo most recently created Hair Detox, supplements for the detoxification and restoration of healthy hair, skin, and nails. The nutrients, amino acids, and natural herbs in Hair Detox were specifically selected for their traditional and scientifically supported ability to help prevent hair loss and promote a healthy hormonal balance. They can even help you maintain the hair you have. Additionally, Angelo, along with Jacob Guttman, the founder and CEO of Creative Pro Hair Tools, recently introduced The Flex Brush. It works on both wet and dry hair, bends to the contours of your head, massages your scalp, and stimulates the production of natural oils. The brush has vents that allow heat to pass through, so blow drying won’t damage the brush. Angelo David Salon is the only salon in New York City that specializes in transforming clients’ looks using signature hair pieces and wigs, combined with creative cutting, coloring, and styling. For more than a decade, Angelo has been a media favorite, and his work has appeared in BELLA, Star, Cosmopolitan, Life & Style, Self, the New York Post, Parents, OK, Avenue, Manhattan, Resident, Hamptons and many others. His salon has been featured on Pix11, NBC New York (Best New Beauty Hacks), Market Watch, Inside Edition, Fox News, Vieira Living Live, Today, and Good Morning America’s makeover segment “Lose 10 Years in 60 Minutes.” Additionally, his accolades from Manhattan Magazine include “2015 Best Extensions Award” and “2016 Best Extensions Award.” Always in demand, Angelo has had the opportunity to work with many celebrities, including Christie Brinkley, Aviva Drescher, Sonja Morgan, Ramona Singer, Carrie Preston, Tamara Tunie, Alexa Ray Joel, Coco Rocha, and Kelly Rutherford. DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME: TREATING BAD BREATH by JaCob puCk

S

ocial Life has come to know Dr. Steven Fox, one of the foremost authorities (and artisans) of veneers and prosthetics. Having partnered with the U.S. government and the American Dental Association to develop many of the products used in oral care today, Dr. Fox is not only an expert in his office, but is also a leader in R&D—whether or not you’ve ever visited his practice, it’s likely that his work has touched your life. His resume is stunningly impressive. When Dr. Fox was the chairman and CEO of Enamelon, Inc., his scientific advisory board included a Nobel Prize-winner in chemistry, the assistant U.S. surgeon general, and the dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. And then there’s Dr. Fox, himself. Dr. Fox is the only doctor in New York City who has served on the faculties of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the NYU School of Dentistry, served as an officer of Harvard University, and served on a tech board at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a leading expert on dentistry and is frequently tapped by every form of media for his knowledge and opinions. This month we tapped Dr. Fox for his opinion on a silent killer: chronic bad breath and bleeding gums. What we learned is that they might be symptoms of something else that could be very wrong, or could become much worse. “It’s entirely possible that the bacteria in the mouth can have

a very negative effect on the body, including stroke, heart attack, six types of cancer, dementia, and arthritis,” says Dr. Fox. “There can also be periodontal conditions and bone levels can decrease. If you have diabetes, the bacteria can make it worse, and diabetes can make the bacteria worse! People should really pay attention to this.” We wanted to know more. What is your role in reducing or eliminating bad breath? First, I check a person’s bacteria level by examining a sample of bacteria under a special-phase contrast microscope to view the density of harmful bacteria. Then, I treat bad breath with instruments and medication to create a normal balance of bacteria so patients don’t end up with problems potentially much worse than a foul odor. Bad breath is an indication that there may be something going on in the mouth that could lead to larger problems, so we want to get rid of it! What about bleeding gums? It’s the same thing: bleeding gums are caused by high concentrations of bacteria, and when it gets into the bloodstream it can cause a whole host of problems. Our goal is to prevent that. It’s hard to tell someone they have bad breath. It can be for a layperson, yes. But if you detect it with someone, you should say something. Avoiding it could lead to significant health risks, or other risks. I don’t mind saying that I’ve saved jobs and relationships. Is it possible that someone simply has chronic bad breath and no other underlying problem? Generally, no. There’s something going on in there, and that’s where I come in. If I can’t immediately identify the issue, then I will recommend a specialist such as a gastroenterologist. What’s the good news? Very often with some dietary adjustments and oral treatment, we can get this resolved most of the time and stave off much worse problems down the road. DR . ROYA HASSAD NYC RENAISSANCE DOCTOR FOSTERS HEALTH & HAPPINESS FOR PATIENTS By Veronica Childs

D

r. Roya Hassad has been dubbed the Tony Robbins of health care because her personalized approach leverages a myriad of disciplines from medicine to wellness to beauty to life coaching. It’s no wonder patients flock to her to live longer and happier. Dr. Hassad runs three medical anti-aging centers in New York. Their names—Hope, Life, and Dream—represent the critical things Dr. Hassad nourishes in her patients. Adding to her scope of coverage, she is also the founder and medical director of Advanced Medical Health Services. An award-winning physician, educator, and speaker, her practice areas include family medicine, dermatology, women’s health, addiction recovery, and anti-aging medicine. Dr. Hassad is quite literally a one-stop shop for physical and mental health, beauty and wellness, and preventive medicine.

She’s a renaissance doctor who stands by you until your health and happiness get back on the right track. Affiliated with quality medical facilities such the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center, Dr. Hassad has been recognized as one of the top family-practice physicians in the U.S. in 2016 and 2017. Her practice center, Advanced Medical Health Services, is the premier medical and health clinic on Long Island. What sets Dr. Hassad apart from others is her thoughtful and caring approach. She doesn’t want to just prescribe medications that superficially treat a problem. Instead, she digs deep until the source of a problem is discovered. Patients speak highly of Dr. Hassad. One said, “I had uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure for several years, resulting in a stroke and two heart attacks. I was taking multiple medications and had a serious lack of energy. After being on Dr. Hassad’s program, my energy level has increased significantly and my blood pressure is under control. I am back in the gym again and exercise without having shortness of breath or chest pain. I highly recommended her because she is the best doctor I have ever met in my life.” Another patient talked about her scare with multiple sclerosis. “About two months ago, I had numbness in my right leg and arm, fatigue, and difficulty walking. I was evaluated by numerous doctors and all diagnosed multiple sclerosis. I was very depressed and thought it was hopeless until I was referred to Dr. Hassad by an emergency room physician. After carefully reviewing me, she was certain I did not have MS; in fact, I had a treatable disorder called transient myelitis. I was immediately started on appropriate treatments. In about two weeks all my symptoms were resolved and I could not be happier. I highly recommend Dr. Hassad to all my family and friends.” Dr. Hassad said, “We are dedicated to providing our patients with the highest quality of medical care in a friendly and compassionate manner, using the most advanced technologies for the most effective outcomes.” Dr. Hassad truly dedicates herself to making people’s lives better through her practice. She also gives back to the community by dedicating time to helping abused women and people who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction. NOVA LIFT FOR A NON-SURGICAL FACE LIFT By Mary Ellen Lynch

W

illiam Greenberg, M.D., is the founder of Youtherapy Medical, with locations on the Upper East Side and in Westchester. His practice specializes in non-surgical anti-aging and aesthetic treatments for the face and body. In this article, I will discuss one of Dr. Greenberg’s favorite choices to lift sagging and slack skin on the face or neck without the risks, downtime, and cost of facelift surgery. This procedure can both turn back the clock for older patients and stop it for younger ones.

NOVA THREADS FOR A NOVA LIFT Nova Lift threads are made from a well-tested synthetic material, polydioxanone (PDO). These safe, absorbable threads can immediately lift and smooth skin, but the process also promotes collagen production, which results in continued improvement as the threads dissolve over four to six months. You have instant gratification as well as delayed gratification that continues for a couple of months. Results should last from 12 to 15 months. If necessary, this procedure is often combined with volumizing fillers when a loss of volume is also present, to create a more youthful look. I know this is true because Dr. Greenberg treated me with this technology twice, two years apart. During my second, more recent treatment, I received the latest generation of this technology, which Dr. Greenberg says works even better than the first. Dr. Greenberg is, in fact, among the first physicians to be trained in this technology. He is not only a pioneer in its use, but he is also associated with its innovations, and he is a physician-teacher who instructs others in this technology’s best practices. In less than an hour, Dr. Greenberg tightened my slack jaw line and eliminated my marionette lines (those vertical lines that descended from the corners of my mouth). I actually first went to him expecting a filler for those lines, but Dr. Greenberg said he could offer me something better and longer-lasting. And he did—and more!

HOW IT WORKS Dr. Greenberg studied my face, pulling my skin this way and that to determine the exact direction the threads should follow for the optimal result. Next, he drew lines on my face that mapped where he’d route the actual threads under my skin. Then he gave me a few quick shots to numb my facial tissues (much like the dentist does before a procedure). Dr. Greenberg has a range of threads to choose from (various lengths and gauges; smooth or barbed), which are pre-loaded onto a thin needle. For me, Dr. Greenberg chose six, 4-inch, 18-gauge, barbed threads—three for each side of my face. Starting on the lower part of my face, in front of my ear, he injected the thread downward toward my chin. As he removed the needle, the barbed thread gripped my tissue just below the surface of my skin, enabling Dr. Greenberg to reposition my skin upward and outward. He did this two more times, each time a little closer to my jaw. Then he did the same on the other side. He also injected a few short threads vertically, around my jaw, to promote collagen production. And that was that. My face was a bit sore that night and in the morning, but Advil was all I needed. Dr. Greenberg asks a patient to return in two months at no extra cost for a couple of extra touch-up threads, which Dr. Greenberg says helps prolong the lift. Dr. Greenberg’s practice is warm and welcoming. He and his staff never make you feel rushed. You also won’t be pressured into procedures or treatments or steered toward buying any of the potions and cosmeceuticals, including Youtherapy Medical proprietary products, which are displayed in the chic lounge. GETTING PERSONAL WITH DR . RAMIN TABIB, NYC SMILE DESIGN By Jacob Puck

W

hat’s the definition of a perfect smile? How has technology changed dentistry? And, why would Dr. Ramin Tabib, one of Manhattan’s most renowned cosmetic dentists, ever want to pursue a career as a short order cook? As Social Life wraps another season, we had one more conversation with Dr. Tabib for the 411 on some technical as well as some personal reflections.

How has cosmetic dentistry changed from when you began your practice? For one thing, there have been tremendous advances in how we bond porcelain veneers and crowns to teeth. We can now create a much stronger bond, which increases longevity and also allows for minimal preparation of teeth. Additionally, there have been advances in the strength of porcelains as well as in making them more realistic and lifelike. There has been a consumer- as well as dentist-driven push to make cosmetic dentistry more natural and, at the same time, more beautiful. To what do you attribute the change? Rapidly evolving technology. While it has allowed us to find exciting new solutions to our patients’ needs, it has also required us to be vigilant in responding to an excess of fads: to thoughtfully evaluate procedures before jumping the gun. Dentistry is benefiting enormously from digital technology and automation. For instance, we now can see X-rays of teeth in three dimensions for better diagnosis. And we are able to scan teeth quickly and accurately instead of having to fill the mouth with goopy material to make an impression. One of the keys to your success is your collaboration with your wife, Dr. Elisa Mello. Do you ever disagree about anything? I’m not sure I’d call it disagreement—it’s more like having differences of opinion. We have complementary strengths in dentistry and complementary personalities; they lead us naturally to look at issues from different points of view, and help us form broader, more thorough opinions. This has proven to be most valuable, leading to the best possible results for our patients. What is your definition of a perfect smile? The perfect smile is unique to each patient, complementing their face and natural expression. It should add light to the face, but not be so bright that it’s the only thing you see. A perfect smile should not walk into a room before the person does. You want to enhance the facial features and expressions, to harmonize with them, but not to overshadow the whole picture.

What is the most important thing someone can do to maintain a great smile besides brushing and flossing regularly? Have regular checkups and professional cleanings and —equally important—maintain a diet that promotes dental health and makes teeth resistant to decay. Stay away from sodas and sports drinks (particularly those containing sugar). They are extremely acidic and will melt away the enamel of the teeth over time. If you hadn’t become a dentist, what would you be? I’d probably be looking for a career where I could express my creativity. I was always fascinated by architecture, and also love comedy and cooking. So maybe a short order cook. A really funny short-order cook. In a kitchen of my own design, of course. HAIR REJUVENATION AND TRANSPLANT EXPERT By Jacob Puck

I

t’s important to be an informed consumer. If you’ve been a loyal reader of Social Life this summer, you now know a lot about Keith R. Durante, M.D., and his medical and surgical treatment for managing hair loss, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and even beards. You’ve learned about his passion for philanthropy and the tragic circumstances that steered Dr. Durante to a life led with greater purpose. His soonto-be-published memoir is about his life-changing experiences and the power of forgiveness. Dr. Durante has been featured in each of our summer issues, which are online at sociallifemagazine.com. Dr. Durante is a highly experienced, fellowship-trained micro-vascular surgeon who decided to parlay his experience into another medical discipline that requires micro-surgery: hair transplants. He wanted to help people live their lives to their fullest in a new way: hair loss management and hair transplants for both men and women—a field that also requires aesthetic vision. What are some common treatments for hair-loss management? It could be as simple as lifestyle changes, specific hair vitamin therapy, or topical medications. Among the more common procedures are injections of PRP (platelet rich plasma) in conjunction with LLLT (low-level laser therapy), both of which stimulate hair follicles and improve blood circulation in the treated area, encouraging hair growth. Hair restoration can often be done with no IV’s, no scars, no pain or bleeding, allowing you to get back to your routine in a matter of days. Results depend on the cause, site, and severity of hair loss. I can often help patients to the point where their situation is tolerable for them. And for others I can achieve results that don’t indicate there was ever any hair loss. Is it true the average person waits five to seven years before getting a transplant because of misinformation and anxiety, which can actually lead to psychological depression? Yes, and men and women need to know this is a treatable problem that can be corrected in a doctor’s office and may not even require surgery, but only medical management. A lot of patients don’t know this and suffer the same type of depression they might experience from a much more serious medical diagnosis. What’s on the horizon for hair-loss management? The treatment of hair loss has really been revolutionized and is constantly evolving. We already can avoid scars and bloody procedures, but we also better understand the causes of hair loss. There is a lot of biology involved in hair management and the treatment protocol is

different for each patient. Procedures are always getting better, and it’s a bright future. Personally, I continue to evolve, too. If you want to treat patients differently, you need to think differently. That’s what I do—treat the cause before addressing the effect, and how I will always make sure that I am ahead of the curve when it comes to hair loss management. Hair transplantation has evolved into a minimally invasive, one and done procedure with a beautiful, natural look and a change that will last a lifetime. It will be my privilege to evaluate you at my new state-of-the art facility on Fifth Avenue. Thank you, readers and Social Life’s great staff for a signature summer! Keith R. MY RULEBOOK OF LIFE By L.A. Dawson

L.A. Dawson is the author of articles, self-help books, and novels. She is also an inspirational speaker and resides in New Jersey with four happy canine friends. @authorladawson | authorladawson.com

A

person’s lack of integrity can be measured by his or her last unkind word or deed. Human nature somehow doesn’t prevent negative behaviors, which often result from judgmental reactions. It takes practice to put negativity in permanent storage and serious determination to stop habitual, knee-jerk judgments. I insist on remaining positive and try to focus on love and hope, with a monthly visit to my “truth mirror,” to keep reactions in check.

1

I am unimpressed by pedigrees whether animal or human. The only impressive pedigree is compassion for both species. If you want to be part of my world, show me your love for humans and other animals.

2

It is easy to lose hope, but I choose to look at life with the eyes of a child so that I always see the wonder in the world. Although there is much in the world to mourn, dwelling on sadness will suffocate the ability to see the best in life.

3

Losing hope is akin to giving away hidden pieces of our heart that are still magical and pure. Keeping hope in impossible circumstances is courageous and draws upon our hidden strengths. We all have talents, and I believe most are born with a gift or strength that is unique only to them.

4

Rewriting history is just that: facts that we’ve changed because we didn’t like the true outcome. So often when we have a relationship that ends because of a break-up or death, we invent a character description that isn’t aligned with reality. Often it becomes impossible for us to face the mistakes that we have made, so we don’t. Instead, we actively rewrite our stories.

5

Lead with love, follow with prayer, and remember to bring your knee pads! I am in remission from neurological Lyme disease, and still battle the repercussions. There are things I no longer can do and for a long while my physical deficits were all that I could see. Now I focus on all that I have and actively replace thoughts

of loss with ones of hope. The knee pads stay close so that I can remain prayerful and grateful.

PERMANENT MAKEUP TRENDS & TRUTHS WITH SHARON GRASSO by ChristinE Montanti

Brow tattooing is not only done to create definition and shape to simply look like the brows of Instagram; the procedure is also being used to correct the physical appearance of people who are battling medical conditions.

T

he eyebrow trend that we simply can’t get enough of, Microblading, is here to stay! This cutting-edge brow technique uses a tool to simulate extremely fine hair strokes resulting in very natural-looking eyebrows. Micropigmentation for brow procedures has become a craze on social media and is not only being used to enhance already beautiful brows, but also can be used to help people suffering from medical illnesses and conditions such as alopecia, trichotillomania and cancer by giving them back something they have lost. Because there are many variables, the brow technique tends to differ among permanent makeup artists and changes depending on the types of tools and machines used to achieve clients’ goals. We reached out to one of the most skilled New York celebrity permanent makeup experts, Sharon Grasso, who has two decades of experience as a dually licensed micropigmentation artist and instructor, to get the details on this brow technique and its benefits.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

“There are so many misconceptions with the trend of microblading,” explains Sharon Grasso, owner of Permanent Touch Cosmetics. “Brow tattooing is not only done to create definition and shape so they look like the brows of Instagram but is also used to correct the appearance of people battling medical conditions. This technique of depositing pigment into the skin, is instrumental in helping restore confidence in cancer and alopecia patients especially after they have been left feeling less than whole.” Another reason people tend to lose their eyebrows laterally toward the sides of the temple is because of thyroid conditions. “Unfortunately, people who have a thyroid disorder or even people who have oily skin don’t retain pigment very well, “explains Sharon. “What many people may not be aware of is that a manual tool such as a microblade, doesn’t have the ability to deposit as much pigment as a digital machine. The blade itself is unable to deliver as much color as a motor driven device which uses a variety of different types of needle configurations yet achieves the same desired effect. In fact, using a micropigment machine, the technician has more control and ability to be precise with longer lasting results as opposed to a manual tool such as a microblade. Sharon reveals that there continues to be a significant misunderstanding in the industry, in that, people think that a microblade is the only method to create a fine natural hair stroke. “We can give the client the exact same result or better with a variety of needles that is finer, more precise and ultimately provides a longer lasting end product. Not to say that there isn’t a place for microblading, it’s just a more difficult tool to get a consistent result with, and it requires a highly skilled technician.” As a licensed aesthetician with 20 years of experience working with NY-based plastic surgeons, Sharon currently offers her aesthetic services in the offices of nationally renowned cosmetic plastic surgeon, Stephen T. Greenberg in the NYC, Woodbury and Southampton locations. Her procedures include permanent makeup for eyebrows, lips, eyelids, lash enhancement and scar correction. She also offers a variety of sought after anti-aging skin services such as SkinTyte, Forever Young BBL for skin rejuvenation, sun damage, and rosacea treatments; laser hair removal; stem cell masks; and chemical peels and much more!

GET READY FOR YOUR RESORT BODY. FAST! by staCEy GriFFith

W

hat if I told you that if you don’t have time to take a 45 minute exercise class, you could still reap the benefits of that class by simply moving at full power for three 60-second intervals, each followed by moving at slow power for three minutes. Full-powered exercises include cycling, swimming, sprinting, fast jumping jacks, high-knee thrusts. Slower exercises are walking and stretching. Knowing this, would you still make an excuse? Of course not. Everyone has 12 minutes a day to move. This exercise program is based on the work of Martin Gibala, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Always check with a doctor before you start any new fitness challenge, especially this one. And you may or may not need the entire three-minute slow-down following pushes. Start with the three minutes at first. If you find that your heartrate is back to its resting rate before the three minutes is up, you can shave the time in between sets. Most people in metropolitan cities call boutique fitness classes their second homes. Fitness families are the new community drivers today. But what if you aren’t part of that community? How can you inject motivation into your life every morning if you don’t have the time for classes? You can! The exercises described above and watching what you eat will ensure that you feel physically good. When you start to feel healthier and look better, you’ll be motivated to keep going. I highly recommend cleaning up your diet now, so that by the time your vacation begins, you are feeling tight and light in that new resort wardrobe, and are ready to walk down to that shoreline with confidence and grace. Losing body fat doesn’t have to be daunting; in fact, exercise can be fun and eating well can still be delicious. By cutting out little things like added sugar, bread with dinner, fried foods, candy, ice cream — things like that — you’ll notice a significant change in your waistline. My 32 years in the health and wellness field informs my belief that anyone at any age can get into the best shape of their life if they want to. You have to have the desire and will to feel better than you’ve ever felt. I write about this in my book Two Turns From Zero, available from Amazon. Decide now, before you finish this article, why you need to be in better shape. Once you decide, I want you to download four songs that you can exercise to three times a week. Today can be the day you start to exercise and clean up how you eat. And don’t use the word “diet”; you’re not on a diet, you’re on a mission!

STEM CELL THERAPY SPINE AND JOINT PAIN By Jacob Puck used to restore balance in the injured tissue by utilizing the human body’s ability to heal itself. Surgery just can’t recreate what the body can do naturally. Where do the stem cells come from? Everything is natural and of your own biological material.

I

f you’re an active person over 40, chances are you and your friends have commiserated about pain in your joints and back. And, it’s very likely the conversation has turned to “arthritis.” It’s a dreaded topic because it is a discussion about your discomfort doing outdoor activities you’ve always enjoyed with such ease in the past — golfing, running, biking, playing tennis, etc. Most people believe the only resolution to their pain problems is major surgery. But, according to Dr. Tim Canty, a New York-based doctor, there is a new, less invasive solution that could treat your discomfort and get you back to doing those hobbies you really enjoy sooner than you thought possible. After training at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Canty founded the Comprehensive Spine and Pain Center of New York. Dr. Canty believes patients who suffer from different types of joint pain and injury-induced pain, specifically in their knees, choose to opt out of treatment altogether because invasive surgeries may provide only temporary relief or are only minimally effective. Others are turned off by long recovery times and horror stories about botched surgeries. According to Dr. Canty, there is good news: an exciting alternative to surgery that utilizes the body’s own healing power. “Stem cell therapy is a minimally invasive non-surgical treatment, and, from my perspective, it is the most progressive approach because it’s effective, safe, and quick, and it addresses all the factors related to pain.” Social Life recently caught up with Dr. Canty to learn more about the science of stem cell therapy, its efficacy, and who might be a good candidate for its pain-relieving methods. Stem cell therapy is still a relatively new concept for many people. What is it and how does it work? Stem cell therapy can treat joint and spine-related pain with a simple 30-minute procedure, and in most cases eliminate the need for surgery altogether. Essentially, stem cells from the patient are

What about rods, plates, pins — all those items doctors have been using for years? In special injury cases those materials are sometimes necessary. Because this has been the norm, people are more likely to undergo surgery for pain. But in most cases, putting those objects in our bodies can be avoided with stem cells. Stem cell therapy catalyzes natural healing and repair. We’ve had great success with many orthopedic conditions, injuries, and musculoskeletal diseases that formerly required the types of items you mentioned. What is one of the most common procedures you perform? I would say about 50 percent of my patients come in for treatment of knee pain due to arthritis and injuries. People have been told they need knee replacements or arthroscopies. The stem cell therapy is incredibly successful for the knees because it focuses on healing the specific tissue causing the discomfort in order to organically restore your knee instead of replacing it altogether. Are there any side effects? As with any procedure, some patients may experience side effects. Among the most common are swelling and soreness near the injection site along with joint and muscle stiffness, though the latter dissipates as your body heals. What are the upsides? This is a non-surgical method of treating chronic pain, so it offers reduced downtime and peace of mind through a simple procedure. Most people are active within a day or two, and then playing tennis or golfing within days or a couple of weeks. That is never the case with conventional surgery. JAMES C. METZGER OF SERVICE THE HEARTBEAT OF NEW YORK’S HOSPITALITY By Patrick Shannon Photography By Donald Fitzgibbon and Brian Shannon

What does it take to be a great chef/owner at one of New York City’s fine dining restaurants? Is it an art? A science? Yes, and yes. Talking with graduates and instructors from culinary institutes about qualities of great chefs, one of the traits that tops the conversation is creativity. Acknowledgement of this comes from a great source: David Ogilvy, “the Father of Advertising.” In his book Blood, Brains, and Beer, he recounts an experience as a young sous-chef in a Paris restaurant. He credits this moment as contributing to a life as one of the greatest copywriters of all time. His chef ’s early morning challenge: “…prepare me 16 different apple dishes before lunch” was a slice of inspiration that led to the creation of the great agency Ogilvy & Mather. A top chef ’s creativity is not simply manifested in the selection of ingredients, application of techniques, or skills passed on by mentors. It takes its shape and presence with an unbridled passion to serve great plates every meal, every day, and a drive to discover the next new taste and experience to amaze customers. We’re going to explore three leading restaurateurs. Just three individuals among more than half a million people working in New York City’s 26,000+ restaurants. They are all owners of top fine dining restaurants in New York, and recipients of the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences Star Diamond Awards. We’ll have a moment with them, gaining a small appreciation of what they do and why. And, take a quick look at how they go beyond service in their establishments to helping others, less fortunate, who need the help. There is one more quality great chefs share: the ability to work with and guide teams of people. In the kitchen, from prep cooks to sous-chefs, to the front of the house to vendors,

suppliers, and professional service providers, an executive chef never works alone. One of these professional service providers introduced us to our chefs. He is Jim Metzger, the founder and chairman of The Whitmore Group, one of largest insurance brokerages in New York. Metzger is a major philanthropist, supporting dozens of causes in Metro New York. He, like the chefs, knows what it takes to build a business, keep it moving forward, and the importance of giving back to communities and people in need. In 1989, Metzger drafted a plan to create and build an insurance brokerage business that would make a difference. His idea for the Whitmore Group was to pick spots where he could get noticed and grow by carving out niche markets he could own. That plan today has positioned his company as one of the top 10 in the region. He started with the funeral service industry. There are roughly 800 funeral homes in Metro New York, and Whitmore writes the policies for 80 percent of them. Methodically, in addition to offering commercial, personal, health, liability, and life insurances, he hired accomplished specialists and made acquisitions in targeted industries building his practice to cover everything from real estate to financial services to transportation. With his hospitality practice, the Whitmore Hospitality Group, he wanted to go beyond traditional insurance offerings (you can get a general business insurance policy for your restaurant from any broker or carrier). To do that he wanted to provide an industry-specific risk-management offering that really makes a difference in terms of helping restaurant owners run their businesses better and more profitably over the long run, make their establishments better places to work for employees and enjoyable for customers. Owners today have a lot more to worry about than making sure the best ingredients are bought, cooked, and served to perfection. According to Steven Parnes, EVP of the Whitmore Hospitality Group, “Governmental, economic, and political pressures have added an entirely new and complex level of management and financial pressures to the restaurant business.” Being on premise with clients and prospects every day, Parnes knows, if not planned for and handled properly, issues related to regulations about tips and wages and certain American Disabilities Act legislation can turn the bottom-line of a healthy restaurant red in a short period of time. Mitch Segal, an attorney who specializes in representing restaurants, bars, and catering halls, takes an appreciation and approach to these marketplace realities to another level. Segal notes that although his practice primarily focuses on the purchase and sale of restaurants, the obtainment of various liquor licenses, real estate purchases, and leases related to the hospitality industry, 50 percent of his practice is now spent defending his hospitality clients against lawsuits for Federal and NY State labor law violations and litigation related to the American Disabilities Act. Further, given that these actions are often judged “plaintiff friendly,” Segal counsels clients to develop thoughtful and proactive employment practices, and prepare policies and protocols related to the Disability Act mandates that avoid and minimize potential complaints. With select insurance carriers, mezzanine brokers, and data specialists, Metzger has created a “Restaurant Plus” product line to fit the unique needs of each individual client. Driven by historical and predictive data and technology, these policies can help owners develop protocols and procedures that can influence and affect the human experience with everyone working in a restaurant—from the front and back of the house to the financial and administrative staffs to dining customers. He is dedicated to servicing his hospitality clients with the best menu of risk-management options available in the marketplace today. Now, who are these world-class chef/owners Metzger wants us to know more about? They are three distinct, very different individuals, with something in common: an uncompromising passion to consistently provide remarkable dining experiences. All clients of the Whitmore Hospitality Group, they are Vittorio Assante, da Umberto at 107 West 17th Street, Manhattan; Joseph Smith, owner of nine Bobby Van’s restaurants in New York and Washington, DC; and Marco Moreira, Tocqueville at 1 East 15th Street, Manhattan.

VITTORIO ASSANTE: DA UMBERTO If you don’t exactly know where da Umberto restaurant is, you could walk right by it. The energy of the place isn’t on the outside. It explodes inside. Old school influence and the current vibe of da Umberto are magical. Brightened colors give the place an updated feel with Italian-inspired class. When Vittorio enters the room, he fills it with his spirit and energy. When we vistited him recently, we were treated like family, a lesson in service and hospitality. The food, wines, cheeses, and desserts are simply remarkable. If you haven’t had the privilege of tasting da Umberto’s veal or chicken Milanese dishes, make sure some day you do. These dishes are worthy of being bucket-list items. For over 30 years, da Umberto has been one of NYC’s toprated Italian restaurants. Founded by Assante’s dad, Umberto, in 1987, it has been a family affair from the beginning. Assante began working in the business at the age of 12 and at 17 he was running it. As they say: the rest is history. Raised in New York learning the family trade, Assante spent the summers of his youth with family in Tuscany. There he apprenticed in restaurants and immersed himself in Italian food, wine, and culture, further honing his knowledge and skills, preparing himself to carry on and advance the business. “da Umberto is about appreciating our roots while implementing current trends,” says Assante, “maintaining tradition with innovation, remembering who we are and where we come from and doing it with contemporary sensibility.”

ASSANTE Vittorio and his beautiful wife, Lisa, have two sons and still live in Manhattan. Typical of caring parents with children in junior and high school, their time is not their own, and they spend most of their limited free time attending to their kids’ school events and activities. When asked about causes or charities he supports, Assante looked down and paused for a moment . . . then looked up with bright eyes and said, “Every day, I give.” Giving has simply been part of the da Umberto experience and brand. Assante described how in addition to monetary donations, the business provides food and meals to organizations helping those in need. Gift certificates used for fundraisers are mailed out, delivered, or picked up every day. Community organizations, social services, schools, and religious entities are also the benefactors when da Umberto caters event fundraising efforts. Now, with a big smile Assante confirms, “Every day I give, and I’m glad I can.”

JOSEPH SMITH: BOBBY VAN’S, BV BURGERS &SOTTO SOPRA What do you do after leaving your home in Ardoyne, Northern Ireland, near Belfast, at 15 years old, and then spend half a generation at sea, working on the likes of the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, and the QE II? Well, with a few more hard-scrabbled stops along the way, and after you settle in New York . . . what about taking on a restaurant outpost in the Hamptons, more than 100 miles from New York City, and turning it into a steakhouse empire? As it turns out, it was a

SocialLifeMagazine.com

good idea and a great story. Readers of the Irish Echo and listeners to NYC’s Irish radio know who we are talking about. Now, we all know it’s Joseph Smith, owner of nine Bobby Van’s establishments in New York and Washington, DC. Smith and his partner, Joe Phair, bought the original Bobby Van’s bar and restaurant in Bridgehampton in 1986. The status quo became status wow on the East End, as the food and dining experience took center stage. If a steakhouse is your destination and you step into a Bobby Van’s, you’re home, and you know it. The savory aroma of the perfectly cooked 28-day-aged steaks, fresh fish, and vegetables, and displays of shell fish and appetizers are unique and unforgettable. Experience it once and it is involuntarily seared into your senses, and a welcomed recall every visit. The atmosphere is paced by the movement of the staff—from maître d’ to servers and bartenders. They become friends, almost like family, you expect to see every day and on special occasions. After Long Island, Smith and Phair’s next moves were four restaurants in Manhattan, including Bobby Van’s Steakhouse and Grill on Broad Street in the Financial District, Bobby Van’s Grill on East 54th Street, two Times Square locations on West 45th Street and West 50th Street, two D.C. locations (to help keep our national politicians happy), an airport restaurant at JFK, and a take-out burger joint called BV’s Burger, also in Times Square. And now, there is a new extended family option in Amagansett, Sotto Sopra, a touch of Tuscany on the East End. For someone who was given little as a young man, Smith uniquely likes to give back. One may argue that he has a special appreciation of country natives who are oppressed and need help. That certainly explains his on-going support of the St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota. It was founded in 1927 by Henry Hogebach, a Roman Catholic priest from Germany. It is an American Indian residential school owned and operated by the Priests of the Sacred Heart. While high school graduation rates for Native American students in South Dakota hover around 60 percent, for students who attend St. Joseph’s at some point in their academic career, graduation rates are approximately 94 percent. And, like many of his colleagues, Smith is a contributor to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Thirty-two years into it, and his brand is only getting stronger. “Why is that?” we asked Smith. “Lots of things change, but human nature doesn’t,” Smith quickly replied. “At Bobby Van’s restaurants, we believe the customer should always be greeted warmly and with

a smile, service should be friendly and efficient, and the food should be delicious and plentiful.” Keep it simple. Make it right. Sounds like a good place to start and finish. Thank you, Mr. Smith.

MARCO MOREIRA: TOCQUEVILLE & 15 EAST If you’ve never been to the United Nations, perhaps you could take a prep course by meeting Marco Moreira, the executive chef and proprietor of Tocqueville, the French-American inspired restaurant he established in 2000, and just a stone’s throw from his 15 East, founded in 2008, featuring sushi and modern Japanese cuisine. The UN lesson comes to life as you meet the staff in his restaurants speaking Italian, Portuguese, French, Spanish, German, Russian, Czech, Japanese, English, Korean, and more. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, of Italian descent, he began his culinary career learning the prep and presentation of sushi. Fusing all his experience, he created the award-winning Tocqueville, ranked number 8 in New York by Zagat. Recently, John Mariani, “the most influential food-wine critic in the popular press,” according to the Philadephia Inquirer, and a three-time nominee for the James Beard Journalism Award, wrote about Tocqueville for Forbes Magazine. His tribute:

“Tocqueville continues to evolve by nuance not trendiness.” Moreira credits his inspiration to his two grandmothers, his mother’s cooking, and, of course, his father, a gourmet. They were the influencers sparking a special passion for delivering sophisticated fine dining experiences. Before farm-to-table became a topic du jour here in the States, Moreira was on the front of that wave. He tells stories of shopping daily for fresh food at the farmers markets with his grandmother when he was just six years old. “Look at all the tables that have strawberries. Pick the freshest, and then shop for the best price,” she told him. And then, for fresh chickens, she said, “Pick out a cute, healthy, live one and tell the butcher we will be back for it later. Let him know we’ll finish butchering at home, and be sure to include the feet, head, innards, and blood.” Recently, he excitedly talked about some of the day’s shopping: white truffles from Alba, Scottish pheasant and fish from Portugal and the coast of Italy. The compass for his menus is always the best and freshest foods he can find. For both his restaurant and catering businesses, since the 1980s, Moreira has shopped at the Union Square Greenmarket in New York City. In fact, the location of the market had a major influence on where he opened his restaurants. Now, it looks like the team Moreira may have next-generation bench strength coming on soon. According to Moreira, his daughter Francesca, a junior at a New England prep school, has been a foodie for quite some time. Involved in tastings at the restaurants, she has already been featured in the New York Times and on CBS television. Moreira’s current plans are taking him back to his Brazilian roots. He is reopening Botequim, a laid-back, “Bossa Nova cool” restaurant featuring informal but focused fine dining ingredients and preparation of Brazilian and other Latin cuisines. You’ll find great fare like São Paulo street food, and moqueca (fish with prawns) stew, among other tempting delights, including an array of the best prime meats, tenderly seasoned and elegantly served a la carte, designed to satisfy the most discerning palates. A New Yorker now for 36 years, Moreira’s sense of family and community is expressed generously by supporting of a variety of cause-related initiatives. Several times a year Moreira helps with fundraising events for City Meals on Wheels. Sometimes he partners with peer chefs to plus up their efforts. New York is all the better with his support of Harvest Square and the Central Park Conservancy. In addition, he too supports St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Moreira’s compasses for menus and mankind seem to be in exemplary working order.

Standing alongside his clients, Metzger feels fortunate he can be of service to them and to have redirected some of his success and earnings to helping others too. His charitable giving reads like best practices for a Philanthropic Hall of Fame, totaling more than $5 million in contributions. Most significant is his athletic-oriented support. His almae matres, Hofstra University and Half Hollow High School; St. Anthony’s High School on Long Island; and numerous youth lacrosse organizations have benefited from Metzger’s support for stadium construction, grants, and scholarships. Over the years, Metzger has generously donated to as well as raised funds for Long Island chapters of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Arthritis Foundation, and The American Heart Association. One may ask, why such an emphasis on giving in the world of sports? The answer is simple. As a young man, sports were his passion. In high school at Half Hollow Hills East, Metzger set school and county records in both football and lacrosse. Scholarship offers for football or lacrosse followed from Syracuse, Cornell, Colgate, Virginia, Army, Navy, Penn State, Towson, North Carolina State, and Hofstra. Long Island fans won, and at Hofstra Metzger was a Division 1 Lacrosse All-American. His sophomore record-setting scoring average

of 4.9 points per game still stands. His single season average still ranks 5th in the history of the school’s lacrosse program. Shortly after his major contributions to Hofstra, someone who knows athletic talent when he sees it commented on his memories of Metzger. That someone was Dave Howard, a former executive vice president of the New York Mets and president of Madison Square Garden. He suggested that his former teammate was the greatest natural athlete he ever played with. “His combination of speed and strength and elusiveness were just remarkable,” said Howard. Metzger will quickly confirm that his multi-sports experience was the foundation he leaned on to achieve his success in business. “Everything I ever needed to know in business, I learned on the sports field.” Executive Producer & Creative Director: Christine Montanti Photography: Donald Fitzgibbon, Brian Shannon Assistant Producer: Joseph Vincent Tuozzo Groomer: Anna Naso Technical Assistant: Joe Fishbein Special Thanks To Gary Melius and our magnificent location, The Oheka Castle

JEAN SHAFIROFF THE GLAMOROUS DO-GOODER By Christine Stoddard and Bennet Marcus Photography By Michael Paniccia

New York philanthropist Jean Shafiroff believes the holidays should be about helping others. “Life often doesn’t look like it does in the movies and the holidays are no exception,” she says. “You shouldn’t compare your life to those fantasies. Instead, focus on serving those in need.” Shafiroff follows her own advice. While she commits herself to philanthropy year-round, she goes full force in Manhattan every fall. After all, tis the season of giving. Charities make their end-of-year requests with email blasts and mailers. They host events for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and other cool-weather occasions. Community dinners, toy drives, coat drives, and other initiatives fill up New Yorkers’ calendars. “But your mere presence at fundraising events is never enough,” says Shafiroff. “If you are a person of means, you have an obligation to give.” And give she does. She raises funds, donates her own money, chairs and sits on boards, and consults charities on financial matters. Shafiroff has raised millions of dollars for organizations in New York City, the Hamptons, and abroad. Her single largest fundraising achievement—$5.4 million—came from three consecutive galas in honor of Southampton Hospital. She currently sits on the boards of the New York City Mission Society, the French Heritage Society, the Couture Council of The Museum at FIT, the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services, the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Honorary Board, the Southampton Bath & Tennis Club’s Charitable Foundation, and Global Strays. In addition, she is a New York Women’s Foundation Board alumna who remains very active with the SocialLifeMagazine.com

foundation. As if that were not enough, she even hosts charity events at her homes in Manhattan and the Hamptons. In fact, Shafiroff enjoys playing hostess. The holidays are no exception. “I am certainly happy to have people come over,” she says, adding that it is all the better if done in the name of philanthropy, her life’s work. “Philanthropy gives me a sense of purpose, and I feel very lucky to be able to do it. It is hard work, but my life is philanthropy, and I feel it is very important to support local, national, and international charities.” Enthusiastically supporting such causes is her life’s calling. “I don’t play golf or tennis,” she says, although she works out daily. “I’m social, but I would just as soon socialize around causes rather than just go out to dinners.” But Shafiroff doesn’t just give—she gets. She racks up what many would agree are well-deserved awards for her work as a philanthropist. In the month leading up to Thanksgiving this year, she received five awards from non-profit organizations. Her curriculum vitae includes dozens of other achievements. Perhaps the most notable honors include ones from the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, NYC Mission Society, Jewish Board of Family & Children’s Services, Southampton Animal Shelter, The Better World Awards, and RAYWA-Raising Awareness for Young Women With Autism. Steven M. Bernstein, the president of the Southampton Hospital Foundation, praises Shafiroff ’s tireless devotion to philanthropy. “While the etymology of the concept of ‘Doing well by doing good’ is often attributed to Benjamin Franklin, the behavior is quintessential Jean Shafiroff,” he says.

“She evokes the true spirit of giving, philanthropy, and volunteerism every day of her life in her passion for and service to important causes and organizations.” Shafiroff is quick to thank her parents and teachers at Catholic school for her strong work ethic and compassion for others. Instilled with these values at a young age, she has raised her two daughters to act with kindness and generosity, too. (One even went on to start her own charity, Global Strays, for which Shafiroff is a board member.) But before Shafiroff became a mother or even a wife to Martin Shafiroff, she had careers that laid the foundation for her philanthropic work. Her first career stemmed directly from her physical therapy studies at Columbia University. Then after working in a hospital for a year, she returned to Columbia for her MBA in Finance. Motherhood propelled Shafiroff ’s life in a direction she had not expected. While she had always seen the value in giving to others, she didn’t become a philanthropist until she became a mother. In her book Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give, Shafiroff writes, “Life moves so fast that we often forget to think about the power of giving in our lives.” Yet when life started moving fast, Shafiroff decided to pause and reflect. “Giving birth and becoming a parent helped me appreciate the miracle of life and experience true gratitude for what I have,” she says. “First I got involved with organizations related to what my daughters were doing, but then as they grew older, I found myself wanting to focus on my passions and give to other causes.” At this time, she is particularly devoted to

ending homelessness, championing women’s rights, and ensuring that animals have a place of dignity in society. Shafiroff would like to see the American model of philanthropy adopted in other countries. “The idea of global philanthropy is something I am very interested in, and I would like to help promote this concept in any way I can.” She believes that there are many ways to tastefully promote a cause. For Shafiroff, even fashion can be a form of promotion for charitable organizations. She is often seen in memorable cocktail dresses and ball gowns at charity benefits. Her explanation is simple: “When I dress up, I elevate a cause. People go to a charity function and see that I’m taking the event seriously in the sense that I’m dressing up, but I still want to have fun. That balance sets the right tone for an event and encourages guests to give generously to the cause in question.” In 2018, Shafiroff even made the Daily Fashion Report’s Best Dressed list. Others on the list include Anna Wintour and Meghan Markle. “I was in good company!” she says with a laugh. That was not her only press appearance. Shafiroff has been featured in the New York Times, HOLA, Hello! Magazine, and many other publications, including the Wall Street Journal, which featured her in its “Donor of the Day” column. Shafiroff also appears regularly on television to promote philanthropic causes. This holiday season, Shafiroff hopes you will get involved with philanthropy and contribute to important causes. “There is tremendous need everywhere,” she says. Don’t know where to begin? “Right now, there is an immediate need in Social Life

California because of the major fires,” says Shafiroff. But don’t stop there. There is a myriad of ways in which everyone can get involved in philanthropy, even those with limited financial resources, whether reading to the vision impaired, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or helping with environmental issues. If you want to get started in your community, Shafiroff advises working for a cause you are passionate about, or one that may have affected you or your loved ones. “We establish ourselves as better human beings when we give,” says Shafiroff. “The world becomes better the moment someone shows kindness and generosity.” And, she believes, we need to teach our children the importance of giving back. “We need to inculcate that in our future generations, so the world can continue to be kinder and gentler.”

RACHEL’S RADAR LONDON TOP 5 by raChEl hEllEr

Bridge Theatre has four plays scheduled from now through August 2019. A Very, Very, Very Dark Matter, by Martin McDonagh (through January 6); My Name is Lucy Barton, based on the short novel by Elizabeth Strout, and starring Laura Linney (January 23 to February 16); Alys, Always, by Lucinda Coxon, based on the novel by Harriet Lane (February 25 to March 30); and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare (June 3 to August 31).

3

The Cow Shed is a spa that saved the day for me after hours of walking around the city. You can get a quick walk-in appointment, which for me is a huge plus when travelling. The ambiance is calming and rejuvenating. This is also the perfect spot for a mani on the go or a pedi if you didn’t have the time for one before you crossed the pond.

4

Indian Accent is a restaurant serving Indian food but not as we know it. The dishes are specially prepared by an authentic Indian chef who offers rare dishes that are not commonly found in most Indian restaurants. This sleek and chic restaurant in Mayfair is great spot when you want to impress a guest.

5 The city of London has so much to offer. Let me share some of my latest top-5 places of interest

1

J Sheekey is a classic West End bar and restaurant. You are likely to run into a celebrity at this in-spot that attracts a lot of colorful and intellectual people. Most important, you will enjoy a solid meal. The food is probably the freshest fare I’ve had in London. I love having oysters followed by the delicious steak. On my last visit, I was going to a show afterwards, so I sat at the bar, which was a great option for fast service. If you are on a business trip, it’s considered okay to plug in your device and work at the bar. It’s still classy because you are in London of course.

5 Hertford Street is London’s most exclusive spot. It’s owned by Robin Birley, an English businessman and the son of Lady Annabel Goldsmith and the late Mark Birley, a nightclub owner who once owned the famed Annabel’s. Each room in 5 Hertford has been designed with the utmost sophistication. The art is eclectic and curated to fit the design of each room, which is unique and has its own personality, plus a fireplace for coziness. I love their Mosow mules and delicious thick breadsticks. Don’t leave without checking out the famed giraffe mascot that greets you at the foot of the stairs and the powder room covered in gorgeous wallpaper by de Gournay. You may follow me on Instagram @rachelhellerxo for more Radar excitement. Social Life

THE “MAIN” EVENT By Jacob Puck

So, what’s all the fuss about?

I

t’s a rare occasion when a property comes on the market that is architecturally exquisite, steeped in history, and ultimately breathtaking, but that’s exactly the case with 238 Main Street in Sag Harbor. “From my perspective, 238 Main Street exemplifies the Hamptons, its unique aesthetic, and just about everything that makes it a desirable locale for the highest net-worth individual looking for a slice of provenance,” says Mark Baron of Brown Harris Stevens and an invitation-only member of Luxury Portfolio International. Baron has anchored his partnership with fellow broker Jane Babcook. The pair are the new Hamptons super-team and share all exclusive listings. “To say 238 Main Street is one-of-a-kind is a bit of an understatement,” says Babcook. “This is the type of listing that makes me very proud to be in this business.”

This historic Nathan P. Howell house is the largest property on renowned and highly desirable Captain’s Row, and is a rare example of period architecture that has been impeccably renovated to the highest level. Built in 1833, 238 Main represents Sag Harbor’s most elaborate Greek Revival architecture, expanded and remodeled in the Italianate style in 1850. Original details have been maintained and are found throughout, including double-hung sash windows, shutters, acanthus leaves, and exquisite moldings. The expert craftsmanship, fine millwork, antique wide-plank floors, and marble mantles will transport you back to a time when a person’s home was indeed a castle. The main residence offers over 10,000 square feet of living space on four levels, featuring seven bedrooms, eight full and one half baths. Arched entries lead through gracious hallways to grand lightfilled parlors with ceilings that soar higher than 10 feet. This stylish landmark home also features a superbly appointed epicurean kitchen, nine fireplaces, two staircases, an elevator, and a cupola. Rare for an in-town property, 238 Main Street is situated on over an acre of pristine land in the heart of the village. It’s absolutely unique. The elaborately landscaped grounds and beautiful gardens provide the utmost in privacy and include a gunite pool and a fourbay, climate-controlled garage with an art studio attached. “Each summer, people always ask which property is my favorite listing, and this one is at the top of the list,” says Baron. “Both Jane and I consider it an absolute privilege to represent the most prestigious property in the village. The Howell home dates back to the most successful whaling families on the East Coast, making it particularly special for Jane and me, who are both entranced by the water.” Baron and Babcook were the obvious choice to list 238 Main Street. Industry leaders, they now comprise “Hamptons Luxury Agents.” The pair has established strong connections, particularly in New York and Florida, expanding their reach and creating even more value for their clients by putting their listings front and center in some of the most affluent markets, including Europe. The asking price is $14,750,000.

90 MORTON By Mary Ellen Lynch

T

he architect Asaf Gottesman of GSArch and the Leroy Street Studio Interiors team, led by Marc Turkel and Sybille Schneider, have collaborated to create an extraordinary project for Brack Capital Real Estate in the West Village, one of the city’s most sought-after residential neighborhoods. The team has transformed a 1912 former industrial building into a light-filled state-of-the-art residential condominium building. 90 Morton contains 35 exquisite residences with world-class amenities. Prices start at $5.3 million for two- to five-bedroom homes. Gottesman added four floors to the original eight-story building. He ingeniously added space, increased privacy, and opened up views by creating cantilevered terraces over setbacks. 90 Morton’s custom geometric, blackened-steel and textured glass front doors suggests something unique, hand-wrought, and specially considered within. The lobby and adjacent library are dressed in rich oak paneling with accents of blackened steel. Columns and rich Venetian plaster embellishments were inspired by Milanese moderne details of the 1940s and ’50s. A carport off the main entry offers further privacy.

RESIDENCES AND PENTHOUSES

The play of industrial and modern continues throughout the building and into the loft-like residences with high ceilings, original concrete beams and columns, unusually large windows, and wideplank, natural oak flooring. Gottesman’s floating window surrounds frame both the view and the massive structure, while Leroy Street Studio’s deep window sills emphasize the building’s solidity and enhance the intimacy of light-filled spaces. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Leroy Street Studio designed industrial-modern kitchens, which include walnut Poliform cabinets and custom, blackened-steel and glass upper cabinets against white quartzite counters and backsplashes. Abundant appliances and fixtures are best in class and include products by Gaggenau, Sub-Zero, Blanco, and Waterstone. Royal Danby marble, European ash drawers, and Kaldewei deep-soaking tubs are in master baths. Powder rooms are lined in Ceppo di Gre stone tiles that Turkel sourced in northern Italy. Six penthouses feature gas fireplaces, libraries, and expansive terraces.

AMENITIES

Amenities include 24-hour attended lobby; virtual concierge services by LIV Unlimited; residents’ library; cold-storage room; 64foot indoor pool with direct elevator access for privacy; saunas and changing rooms with showers and individual lockers; fully-equipped fitness gym; children’s playroom; and common rooftop with a full outdoor kitchen, BBQ, powder room, gas fireplace, and 360° views of the Empire State Building to the Statue of Liberty. “90 Morton is for the individual who, after achieving status and success, came to realize that a life well lived is one that includes a deep understanding of natural elements and unparalleled craftsmanship,” said Shlomi Reuveni, the founder, president, and CEO of Reuveni Real Estate, 90 Morton’s exclusive sales and marketing firm. NEW YORK’S GOLDEN BOY A CONVERSATION WITH STEVE GOLD By Matthew Berritt

F

rom high fashion to high-rises, Steve Gold boasts an enviable pedigree. Social Life sat down with the professional model-turned-real estate prodigy and star of Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing New York.

Describe your perfect Hamptons day. In the Hamptons, I love to unwind and relax with friends and family. After I wake up, I usually put on a pot of coffee, and go pick up Goldberg’s for everyone who is staying at my house (unless there is surf, in which case I head to the beach early). The day consists of relaxing by the pool, preparing lunch with friends, and maybe previewing some properties for my clients with Hamptons-based Corcoran agents. My favorite part of the day is my sunset walks on the beach with Pablo, my dog, as I take him almost every night to the beach to run and get his energy out before the evening. What is your definition of luxury? Luxury is exclusiveness and uniqueness, handmade, and tailored to few. What charitable organizations are most important to you? Nassau County SPCA. I am a spokesperson for them. Rescuing my dog was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, and I’m happy to put my voice behind local organizations that support animals and all the volunteers that make it happen. The Real Deal just named you one of the top ten brokers in Manhattan. What does that mean to you? It’s always an honor to be recognized for hard work. My business has been growing steadily over a decade of working in real estate, and to rank in the top ten Manhattan agents this year is a testament to that dedication. What is your best piece of real estate advice? Be patient in your search, but when the right property comes along, do not be afraid to pull the trigger. Good properties in prime locations that are priced correctly still sell quickly.

In such a competitive industry, what unique skills have helped make you one of the top brokers in America at such a young age? Real estate is a rare industry where hustle and drive are rewarded no matter what age. In a relationship business, what sets me apart—first and foremost—is my commitment to meaningful connections with my clients, but also expertise of the market and inventory, design and architecture knowledge, and smart negotiation. What is the most expensive property you have ever sold? Over the course of my career, I have sold homes in excess of $25MM and work on $250MM+ development sellouts. My most expensive sale, however, was a highly confidential transaction, any detail of which I am not at liberty to discuss. w Million Dollar Listing New York airs Tuesdays at 10 pm on Bravo Steve Gold Corcoran Licensed Real Estate Salesperson 660 Madison Avenue 212.508.7193 steve@corcoran.com Social Life

THE RESIDENCES AT PRINCE FIT FOR A KING By Mack E. Valley

T

here was a time, not too long ago, when Gotham homebuyers were opting for impossibly super-sleek modern, often eschewing the vibrant history of some of the world’s most iconic addresses for an overabundance of steel and glass. According to most trendsetters, provenance is back in vogue . . . and in a big way. Case in point, the Residences at Prince. Many Manhattan residences are described as “unique.” None deserve the designation more than The Residences at Prince — truly a landmark redefined. After originally being purposed as a Roman Catholic orphanage, it became St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral School, in 1931, attended by luminaries like Martin Scorsese. Declared a city landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, in 1966, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Residences at Prince feature the building’s original façade, in addition to several other historic details. Behind the walls, the residences stun. A singular blend of historic and contemporary design, The Residences at Prince were appointed by Marvel Architects, who expertly contrast the Federal style exterior with an exuberant and elegant design within — bringing light and air to the inside, while creating private outdoor space for the residences. While history reigns supreme in this one-of-a-kind opportunity, there’s no need to be lulled too deeply into a bygone era. The nine expansive residences — seven condominiums and two townhouses — enjoy a wealth of high-quality, in-unit features and accents, including Crestron heating and cooling controls, Gaggenau refrigeration, wine storage, oak flooring, and well-appointed master bath-

rooms equipped with steam showers, marble mosaic flooring, and Waterworks fixtures/accessories. Many units also come complete with freestanding sculptural tubs, private outdoor space, and fireplaces throughout. A mix of simplex, duplex, and triplex residences range in size from 2,616 square feet to 4,778 square feet, while the five-floor townhouse spans 8,069 square feet (including an additional 1,613 square feet of cellar space). The amenities for the building include a fitness area with stateof-the-art equipment and a private yoga room, climate-controlled wine cellar, private storage, bicycle storage, package room, drycleaning storage, and attended lobby. Located at the intersection of several popular Lower Manhattan neighborhoods, NoLIta (“North of Little Italy”) comprises 16 square blocks, bounded by East Houston Street to the north, Kenmare Street to the south, Bowery Street to the east, and Lafayette Street to the west. Boasting an unparalleled proximity to a variety of local cultural destinations, noted eateries such as Balthazar and Emporio, as well as high-end retailers such as Neiman Marcus, and designer boutiques such as Balenciaga and Charlotte Ronson, NoLIta maintains its position as one of Downtown’s most coveted neighborhoods. enya Airways brings safari experiences closer for New Yorkers. Recently, Kenya Airways inaugurated a direct flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy airport direct to Nairobi. At slightly under 7,400 miles and several time zones from New York, the direct trip brings you to the capital of one of Africa’s leading nations in about 15 hours. The famed Maasai Mara National Reserve west of Nairobi is one of the best places to enjoy a safari experience. Adjacent to the reserve is the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, which boasts the lowest vehicle density in the whole Maasai Mara region and the largest concentration of big cats anywhere in Africa. In addition, the conservancy has a limit of 94 tourists at a time, affording visitors one of the most private experiences in this beautiful terrain and the best opportunity to see the big five on some 35,000 acres of rolling grassland hills and escarpments. The conservancy has a strong research program. The Tony Lapham Predator Hub, housing the flagship Mara Cheetah Project and Mara Lion Project, has been at the forefront of

The fastest route to Mahali Mzuri is to take a short flight with Scenic Air Safaris from Nairobi to nearby Mara-Olare Orok. The camp itself sits within some 13,500 hectares of the Olare Motorogi Conservancy and offers an ideal base from which to observe the outstanding natural beauty of the area and the wildlife. The tents are well appointed with a private deck and en suite bathroom, and the camp can accommodate a total of 24 guests, guaranteeing an exclusive safari camp experience in the African bush. A TRIP TO THE AMALFI COAST SACH D. CHOPRA By Tom Flanagan

S

ocial Life caught up with Sach D. Chopra on his recent trip to Italy. Sach is a business executive in New York City and known on the Hamptons scene. Our discussion focused on Positano on the Amalfi Coast and offers our readers informed recommendations.

What draws you to the Amalfi Coast? In season there are few places as beautiful as the Amalfi Coast, which is built cliffside overlooking the Mediterranean—technically the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its physical beauty combined with warm Italian hospitality, great food and wine, and mild weather make it one of my favorite places.

What hotels do you recommend to travelers who may be going on a special occasion? There are several luxury hotels with a rich history. Three of these I especially recommend for a stay or at least for dining. Le Sirenuse located in Positano is beautiful and situated on the hillside—it has fantastic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea during the daytime and is enjoyable for cocktails or dinner in the evening. Hotel Santa Caterina located in Amalfi and Hotel Belmont Caruso in Ravello offer exceptional lunches with stunning waterfront views. Is there a place that offers the best view or sunset? It’s hard to choose one as Positano and the drive to Amalfi are incredible. If I had to pick one it would be Villa Cimbrone Gardens in Ravello. At the end of the gardens there are sweeping views of the sea from Terrazzo dell’lnfinito, the Terrace of Infinity. It’s truly breathtaking. Social Life

What activities do you recommend in these towns? There are many towns along the coast with many activities. There are boat charters, water recreation, and beaches. I enjoyed trying local limoncello and for those who enjoy shopping, there are great boutiques with ceramics and linens made by local artisans. What is your favorite memory? My favorite place is Positano, known as the jewel of the Amalfi Coast. It’s relaxing to walk the streets and to take in the vibe and the views. What restaurants you do recommend in Positano? I will give you one for fine dining and one that is more casual. Al Palazzo is fantastic for outdoor dining and has terrific pasta, SocialLifeMagazine.com

seafood, and wine. It has a great ambiance and décor and makes for a good intimate dinner spot. The Brasserie is a great casual gem that is perfect for lunch—it’s right on the water with great views of the cliffside and has pizza, salad, and gelato. Is there anything that you didn’t get to see on this trip? I wasn’t able to get to the island of Capri, which I hear is fantastic and hope to see on my next visit. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with our readers, and we look forward to catching up with you soon. You’re welcome, and I hope your readers experience some of these great places and enjoy them as much as I did.

THE HIGH LIFE IN TURKS AND CAICOS By Jacob Puck

T

here are two descriptive words that immediately come to mind when thinking about Turks and Caicos: magic and luxury. This outlier that straddles the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea had the good fortune to withstand the brunt of the storms that ravaged much of the area last year. It has since solidified its reputation as one of the most desirable vacation destinations for the jet set, those who are always on the hunt for the hottest, most exclusive tropical getaway. The luxury of the islands is low-key which, in turn, supports the pristine environment. Of the 40 islands that make up the archipelago, only eight are inhabited. And, even on these the breathing room is ample. The colors of Turks and Caicos, from the ocean to the sand to the trademark flora, are so rich and vibrant, you could easily be convinced that you were smack in the middle of a postcard. Yes, it’s nice to know there are corners of the world where reality is just as beautiful as any fiction that can be conjured. And, to the delight of Hamptonites, the latest news out of Turks and Caicos is no fairy-tale. “While a number of luxury properties bring ultimate sophistication and exclusivity to Turks and Caicos, just the name Ritz-Carlton adds a new mystique to the island offerings,” said Pamela Ewing, the regional marketing manager for the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board. “The Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Residences will be the first luxurybranded homes to be built on the islands, and we are thrilled that the brand will be expanding its portfolio with this exciting property.”

Of particular note are the residences, which, along with the hotel and its various amenities, will be located in Providenciales (aka Provo) on the world-famous Grace Bay. Here, owners will live The Ritz-Carlton experience every day. Described by the company as the most exclusive development on the island, the 60 condominiums will extend along 688 linear feet of oceanfront property. Each private residence will have breathtaking views, affording a truly unrivaled Caribbean experience. “This new construction promises to be absolutely spectacular,” said Ewing. Ewing reported that another project that’s piquing the interest of luxury seekers is a new Six Senses Resort and Spa, set to open on Salt Cay, one of the smallest and most exclusive islands in the Turks and Caicos archipelago. Known for its exquisite locations, Six Senses is committed to ultimate luxury and comfort and delivers an all-encompassing and unique range of experiences to stimulate, energize, and restore. “We are excited that these investments are being made in Turks and Caicos, adding more high-end products to the destination,” said Ewing. “We welcome them and are looking forward to working together to continue the type of offerings that have become expected from Turks and Caicos as a preferred destination for the luxury traveler or investor.” Turks and Caicos Tourism turksandcaicostourism.com Social Life

Let me inspire you! BY ANDREA CORREALE The holiday season is upon us and, it’s the perfect reason to serve mulled wine. Mulled wine originated in the 2nd century by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, as a long time favorite strategy for enhancing the flavors from spoiled wine or weak vintages by heating it and infusing it with spices. The added spices were also believed to make people healthier and had the benefit of enhancing the flavor of the wine. Today, there are many places in Europe and beyond that have their own version of this delicious drink. It seems like just about everyone in the world loves some form of hot wine. Even Charles Dickens jumped on the mulled wine bandwagon when he wrote about “Smoking Bishop” in “A Christmas Carol” referring to a mulled wine punch. Mulled wine is not only a delicious drink, but creates a festive scent in your home, conveying the spirit of the holidays. ANDREA CORREALE, ENTERTAINING EXPERT,

INSTRUCTIONS Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, and heat just barely to a simmer over medium-high heat. (Be careful not to boil the mulled wine — you don’t want to boil off the alcohol.) Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours. Strain, and serve warm with your desired garnishes. Saltier cheese or Blue cheese pairs well with heavily spiced mulled wine. Enjoy!

FOOD & WINE

TOASTED CHEER By Sharon Roth

H

oliday time is for family, friends, travel, celebration, and, of course, unrestrained cocktail decadence. Known for their festive, playful edge, winter holiday drinks are typically either warming or bubbly or a combination of both, fun to both craft and imbibe. Throwing all caloric considerations to the wind as we do every year at this time (Don’t worry—January is for juicing) here are some of our new favs for the 2018 season.

The Solstice. A refreshing, Prohibition-era concoction of tart, bubbly fruit that still packs a solid holiday punch, courtesy of Brasserie Cognac East. 1 ounce mango nectar 1 ounce Maker’s Mark (or your bourbon of choice) ½ ounce Chambord ½ ounce St. Germain Shake vigorously with ice and pour in retro-chic crystal glasses. Top with champagne and garnish with mint and berries.

The Maccabee. Hot chocolate + tequila… need we say more? It’s basically a drinkable dessert with a marvelous twist that brings winter warming to exalted new levels. For vanilla lovers—simply leave out the chocolate for our delicious holiday Perfectolatte! Courtesy of Perfectomundo Tequila. 3 cups almond or whole milk 2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks (and extra for garnish) 1 whole vanilla bean, split lengthwise, and save the seeds! 5 ounces dark chocolate (about 72 percent) finely chopped Pinch of salt 1-2 tablespoons unrefined cane sugar 2-3 (or more) ounces Perfectomundo Anejo Place milk, cinnamon, vanilla bean, and vanilla seeds in a medium saucepan, bring to a simmer over medium heat. Set mixture aside to steep for at least 10 minutes. Return milk to stove, again over

medium, and whisk chocolate, 1 tablespoon sugar, and salt until chocolate is melted and smooth. Add 2 ounces tequila and simmer another 5 minutes. Taste and add additional sugar or tequila as desired. Serve garnished with a cinnamon stick.

The Red Mulled Wine. (Yum. Always a crowd pleaser, never just a holiday cliché and surprisingly easy to make with the unique JK flourish. Courtesy of JK Wedding Collection. ½ bottle of beaujolais 3 ounces brandy 2 star anise pods 1 orange peel 2 teaspoons sugar Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and cook over low heat until warm. Remove from heat and let stand for 7 minutes. Serve in mugs of choice with cinnamon stick garnish. And that’s that

Mionetto Limone. And finally, on the lighter bubbly side, let’s ring in 2019 with the Mionetto Limone, courtesy of Mionetto. Mionetto Brut DOC, seltzer, limoncello, and lemon peel. Feel free to be creative with the quantities—any combination works well.

Enjoy—and have a safe, happy, wonderful holiday season! Social Life

ANDREA KOWCH SEARCHING FOR A HIGHER MEANING Interview By Deliah Flores Photography by Marsin Mogielski

A

merican Magical Realist Andrea Kowch’s hauntingly beautiful paintings evoke American landscapes of a bygone era as well as depictions of the human condition that transcend time. In this interview, the highly disciplined artist briefly stepped away from her painting to give insight into how her curiosity about life and the natural world inform her prolific works, carving a new and exciting path for the genre.

Can you let us know more about your current exhibition at the RJD Gallery in Bridgehampton? The current exhibition at RJD Gallery BIG ART small canvas, is geared toward the holiday spirit of the upcoming season, and I participated by providing some smaller works that I created years ago, which were published as book illustrations for poetry penned by Brian Tracy, and held in my own personal collection since. In addition, one of the two largest sized paintings I ever completed to date, at 60 inches by 84 inches, was purchased back from its former collector, and is also included in the exhibition. What have you noticed about the appeal your paintings have on the public? I am extremely proud to witness the very profound, emotional chord my work strikes with the public, in manners that encourage the embracement and acknowledgement of all the deeper, hidden, emotional undercurrents that reside within each of us. Through my paintings, I hope and believe that viewers continue to recognize and honor the intricacies and duality of the human condition, Andrea Kowch in front of her studio in Sag Harbor

For such a young artist, your artwork displays a wisdom and depth of knowledge that extends well beyond your years. Can you explain this? I started painting very young, and do not “live the life,” as some do, preferring instead to do my work, extremely seriously. My paintings are the primary focus of my life. I think about composition SocialLifeMagazine.com

Have your paintings ever evolved in a way that surprised you? When I began expanding upon my formal, technical skills as a painter, I worked to evolve my painting style towards being slightly looser than I was naturally used to. Now, my artworks seem to have circled around and gotten tighter, taking much longer in my need to advance my technique and focus, and have directly reflected the

life changes we all go through over time. I, myself, also find that I evolve in ways that surprise me throughout the course of working on my paintings. A few of them were created during particularly pivotal shifts in my personal life, truly taking on elements of my own “chapters.” While, visually, my goal continues to be one of creating paintings that feel like pages of a larger story, with each one serving as an extension of the last, I find it fascinating, though not surprising, that my paintings are indeed a reflection of how my life has evolved over time, and how experiences helped shaped me into the person I am. It would be very difficult for me as an artist to separate the influence that my life experience has had upon my creativity. Although your artwork reflects your Midwestern roots, you are represented by a Hamptons gallery and spend time painting here as well. What does the Hamptons offer you? I am innately attracted to areas, objects, and structures that are steeped in American history. The centuries-old history that permeates the Hamptons appeals to that sensibility, and the feelings it evokes ultimately enhances and complements what I do in various ways. The Hamptons also offers me a distinctive platform from which to share my “world” and roots with an audience that otherwise would not experience it firsthand. Having been involved with RJD Gallery since they opened their doors in late 2009/early 2010, New York and Long Island has become a second home to me in the process. As I continue to return and spend time here, I am able to notice and take in more and more of the natural beauty, charm, and history of the area as a whole. I’ve found that the region provides an incredible natural setting and draws some of the most creative and broad-minded art collectors from all over the world. I was very fortunate early on to have found a gallery that understands my artwork and potential, and honors the same values of respect, honesty, integrity, and, above all my passion for what I do. Since our partnership began in 2010, RJD Gallery has consistently and successfully placed my artworks with a diverse group of very serious collectors, on a global basis, while generously donating their own proceeds to the support of a myriad of charities. They have cultivated an environment wherein I can paint what I want to paint, and make a living through the expression of my artistic passion.

Andrea Kowch, The Feast, Acrylic on Canvas, 60 in. × 84 in.

What are you most excited about right now as an artist? I’m thrilled to begin planning and developing my next body of artwork for 2020 and 2021. I am currently experiencing and nurturing a burst of new ideas that are giving way to dozens of new paintings. The thought of beginning them is both exhilarating and overwhelming. The interesting part about it all, also, is that I feel more conscious of the sources from which these new ideas are sparking. Usually, I do not entirely know where some of my visual musings stem from, but lately I have a clearer impression of “why” I’m thinking of the ideas I am, as I witness and reflect upon the transitions and events taking place in my own life.

Andrea Kowch’s works are currently part of the show BIG ART, small canvas on display until January 21 at RJD Gallery. For the first time, the artist is also producing smaller works called “little gems” available for purchase. Please contact the gallery for more details. THE MASTERS ART STUDENTS LEAGUE By Bennett Marcus

Robert Cenedella, photography by Mark Berghash

GEORGE GROSZ IN AMERICA Cenedella’s 1973 portrait George Grosz in America is the only painting he did between 1965 and 1975, a period when he had given up painting for other endeavors. “It’s also a self-portrait, even though it’s a portrait of him,” Cenedella says. “You never know quite why you do certain things, but now with this show, it becomes an important link.” Grosz was his mentor. Cenedella came to ASL after having been expelled from the High School of Music and Art because of a satirical article he’d written about the atom bomb drills of the period. “I wasn’t going to get into a college without a high school diploma, so I went to the Art Students League,” he says. Grosz was teaching there after being ousted from Berlin by the Nazis. In 1988, Cenedella returned to teach at ASL, and is the George Grosz Chair at the school.

ROBERT CENEDELLA & NORMAN ROCKWELL The Art Students League of New York (ASL) has mounted an exhibition of works by ASL teachers and students, celebrating the school’s storied 140-year history. The Masters: Art Students League Teachers and Their Students—installed at Hirschl & Adler, 511 Projects, and at the ASL’s in-house gallery—includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints by major 20th century artists. Among the artists who have studied and taught at ASL are Norman Rockwell, Mark Rothko, Ai Weiwei, Robert Cenedella, Lee Krasner, Arshile Gorky, James Rosenquist, and Robert Rauschenberg. Cenedella’s piece in the show is a tribute to the late German painter George Grosz, under whom he studied at ASL in the 1950s.

POP ART AND ANDY WARHOL Cenedella’s colorful career included a successful poster company, and commissioned works for companies like Bacardi, Absolut Vodka, and the famous mural in the restaurant Le Cirque. Known primarily as a satirical artist, Cenedella works in a range of genres, including still life, landscape, sculpture, and experimental pieces that he does in Maine, where he spends his summers. “I don’t pigeonhole myself. I think as an artist you push limits in all directions.” Cenedella’s life and work was the subject of the award-winning documentary Art Bastard. His 1965 show Yes Art, in which he threw freshly-boiled spaghetti onto a canvas, sold art by the pound, and gave out S&H green stamps, was a satirical comment on Pop Art and Andy Warhol. “It went viral. Except it wasn’t viral in those days; it was in the newspapers, TV, and on the radio.” rcenedellagallery.com SAATCHI & SAATCHI In 1988, Saatchi & Saatchi removed Cenedella’s controversial painting Presence of Man, depicting a crucified Santa Claus, from a show at the company’s headquarters. That was the same day ASL called and invited him to come and teach. Later, ASL displayed the Santa Claus painting for a month in its 57th Street window, despite threats. “Censorship is something the league would not involve themselves in, and that’s also unique, especially today. The league is just a very special place. No one tells a teacher how to teach, and it’s very democratically run.” theartstudentsleague.org Social Life

SUSAN J. BARRON DEPICTING THE INVISIBLE By Bennett Marcus

T

he artist Susan J. Barron was shocked to learn that every day 22 U.S. veterans commit suicide, mainly due to PTSD. “That is the official United States government number,” she says, adding that many veterans believe the rate is underreported. VETERANS & PTSD That heartbreaking statistic inspired her newest project, a portrait series of veterans suffering from PTSD, titled Depicting the Invisible. Barron spent nearly two years traveling around the country listening to veterans’ stories and photographing them. “They leave children and wives behind, and families are destroyed,” she says. “And to see them survive the hell of war to come back and die on the streets of their own hometown was a story that I needed to tell.” Often, she was allotted 15 minutes to speak with a veteran, and two hours later they’d still be telling her their story. “I felt like they feel silenced; they want to be heard; they want there to be awareness around this. They have entrusted me with their stories, and I’m very grateful to them.” THE PORTRAITS The 6-foot by 6-foot portraits are mixed-media works consisting of photographic imagery, paint, and text. Each veteran makes

SocialLifeMagazine.com

direct eye contact with the viewer, and the text quotes his or her story. “I wanted to project that the invisible wounds of war are just as devastating, if not more so, than the physical wounds of war. The physical wounds of war, we see it, we get it, we have doctors that can fix that. You can see that they’re wounded, and you understand that they require support. But with the invisible wounds of war, with PTSD, people come back and they look perfectly fine, but they are not getting the support they need.” Part of the mission is to try to bring some support, so Barron has created a coffee table book of her works, with proceeds going to Freedom Fighter Outdoors. THE PENCIL PROMISE Barron, who previously had successful careers in branding and advertising, came to the PTSD project through a series of lifechanging experiences. After a trip to Cambodia in 2009, she founded The Pencil Promise, which helped give children in Third World countries access to education. Later, she expanded that project to military bases in the U.S. after learning that many military families live below the poverty line and can’t afford school supplies for their children. Working with military families made her aware of the problem of PTSD-related suicide. HG CONTEMPORARY GALLERY HG Contemporary in Chelsea, owned by Phillippe Hoerle-Guggenheim, is the gallery that represents Barron. The gallery embraced her project and opened the show in time for Veterans Day. During the exhibition, which ran through November 26, the performance piece Table of the Fallen allowed any gallery guest to honor one of Barron’s subjects by sitting at a table and saying the name of one of the veterans she had photographed, which was videotaped and shown throughout the exhibition. HG Contemporary brought the pieces to Aqua Art Miami during Art Basel Miami, December 5 to 9. susanjbarron.com

MICHAEL RUSSO EVENT PLANNING AND DESIGN By Gianna Froccaro

O

f all the professionals in the world, event planners are perhaps the most (foolishly) underestimated. “I could totally be a party planner,” declares the Pinterest-obsessed amateur who equates the job with putting a handful of flowers in a twine-wrapped Mason jar, hanging up a few paper lanterns and stocking up on Instagram-able photo props. Any event planner worth his or her salt knows, however, that it takes far more to truly succeed, and Michael Russo is most certainly a testament to this notion. In addition to his singular artistic vision and discerning eye for even the smallest details, Russo possesses an intrinsic drive and a wonderful way with people. Even when casually speaking with him, you can feel his palpable desire to connect with his clients while bringing their dreams to life. This approach has earned him an impressive celebrity following, as he has coordinated dazzling events for superstars in music (Rihanna, Nick Jonas) and television alike (Robert and Kym Herjavec, Emma Slater). Never one to pigeonhole himself, Russo—or, as he’s known to his clients and friends, “Mikie”—has planned weddings, baby showers, album release fêtes, and birthday parties that strike a perfect balance between luxurious and fanciful. Take, for instance, the third birthday party that Rihanna commissioned him to plan for her niece, Majesty. There, he created a large-scale kiddie version of Rodeo Drive, complete with replicas of iconic storefronts including Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton. (Naturally, the tots drove from store to store in baby

Bentleys and G-Wagons.) No matter the occasion, one thing is for certain: Russo’s events are always fabulous and fun, making them all the more memorable for those who are lucky enough to attend and therefore witness his brilliance firsthand. His remarkable body of work is essentially a product of his being constantly on the go; although he was born and raised on Long Island, he often bounces back and forth from East Coast to West Coast, with the occasional international stop along the way. He regularly makes guest appearances on television programs including The View, Good Morning America, and The Wendy Williams Show, where he shares his expertise and demonstrates his passion for crafting and design. He was also tapped as a special correspondent for the mother of all wedding websites, The Knot, in their live coverage of the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May 2018. The secret to Russo’s success in his field? He looks at his occupation as an unending mission to learn more and to challenge himself to take greater creative risks. With this guiding principle, his potential for continued growth is limitless. Michael Russo michaelrussoevents.com info@michaelrussoevents.com Instagram: @MikieRusso Social Life
