This issue marks the midway point of the summer. The social circuit is going strong, with many choices for galas, private parties, and charity events. There is a multitude of fun and interesting things to do involving good causes and incredible entertainment. Other social adventures are at restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs, as well as at beaches, parks, and vineyards. There is so much to do, you could have a busy schedule for the entire month. The Hamptons is abuzz, so plan your social life wisely. Everyone can agree that the Hamptons is unique. It’s incredibly beautiful and restful. It creates a feeling of wanting to return weekend after weekend. Soon you’re on the Thursday-to-Monday program. If you fall in love with the Hamptons even more, your next step is extending your summer to include the fall. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself living and working out here full time. Whether you become part of the rhythm of returning again and again to the Hamptons or just want to visit once in a while, you are guaranteed to experience something special.

L E T T E R F R OM T H E E D I T O R - I N - C H I E F
Just a few days ago I woke up early and, together with two friends, walked from Mecox Beach to Scott Cameron. Have you ever noticed how the flat terrain of the shore seems to move onward infinitely? That morning the sky and sea were so similar in color it was as if there were no horizon, no line to separate earth from sky. Enveloped by the cozy summer heat, all my senses woke with the cold waters splashing my toes. I just love bright tiny adventures. When I take the time to truly connect to the Hamptons natural beauty, I feel such perfect stillness and childlike joy. I wish I could bottle it up and pop its cork after a hectic city day . . . and in the next moment, I scold myself for being so hardwired by our consumer culture that even my purest instincts are, at times, tainted by consumption and structure. Is it so hard to just enjoy the untamed? The way we experience, take in, and create beauty in our modern day is quite complicated. How do you feel about meaning versus materialism? Experiences you simply cannot buy tend to remind me of Tom Ford’s thoughts on conspicuous consumption. He said, “I struggle with materialism. And I’m one of the least materialistic people that exist, because material possessions don’t mean much to me. They’re beautiful, I enjoy them, they can enhance your life to a certain degree, but they’re ultimately not important.” If consumerism is our modern religion then this quote is akin to hearing one of fashion’s holy men claiming that his church, at least to him, is meaningless. In the Hamptons — where glorious mansions are nestled among idyllic scenes of nature — I think this is a dilemma at the forefront of many minds. Christie Brinkley, one of our recurrent cover girls, has her own take on how to balance meaning and surface. Christie Brinkley’s words are as bubbly and fun as her new Prosecco line: “What makes life perfect is giving back and making the world a better place . . . but it definitely is easier to tackle the world on a good hair day!” I hope each of you enjoys this month’s issue. Please feel free to email me — at devorah@sociallifemagazine.com — with feedback about the pages! I hope each and every one of you is having an amazing July! Don’t forget to give yourself permission to experience the Hamptons fully on every level. You only have one summer 2016 — make the best of it!

Denim Dream Denim is back and huge this season. This workwear staple has been given a major upgrade by designers like Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton and Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld. Gone are the casual days of denim jeans and here are embellished denim jackets and gowns. Be a blue jean baby and rock that classic American look this summer in a fun and fresh way. Britney Spears must be in love with this trend.

CHIC ON THE BEACH AN INTERVIEW WITH HEIDI GOSMAN OF HEIDI KLEIN SWIMWEAR By Lizabeth Zindel
E
ver since she was a child, Heidi Gosman had an interest in creative ventures. She used to love helping her mother, an interior designer, select different fabrics, designs, and styles for her work. After studying business and marketing, Heidi landed her first job at a new-media consulting firm, where she met her business partner, Penny Klein. The duo noticed a gap in the market at the time for luxury swimwear sold year round and so they launched Heidi Klein. Their first boutique located in London’s Notting Hill district is evocative of a Hamptons retreat: whitewashed wood adorned with palm leaves, bleached coral, and driftwood, complete with the delicate scent of coconut. After great success, they opened a second boutique in London’s Chelsea district, and now the brand, which caters to women, men, and kids, is sold in department stores, boutiques, and resorts worldwide. Crafted with love, the luxurious collections — many named after vacation paradises like
Montauk, Bridgehampton, Chile, Mykonos, St. Kitts, and Tahiti — are a favorite of celebrities like Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, and Jennifer Aniston and are ubiquitous in high-fashion editorials. I had the pleasure of interviewing this celebrated beachwear designer about picking out the best swimsuit, tips on looking stylish from beach to bar, and her personal philosophy. You have done swimsuit photo shoots and videos in many exotic locations. Which were your favorites? The Maldives was a special place for us to shoot. The tranquil, sandy, white, pristine beaches and the crystal clear water formed the ideal backdrop for the shoot. Another favorite location was the Cayman Islands. Their famous seven-mile Sandy Point and Owen Island beaches were just perfect for us as well as the idyllic Smith Cove. All these places played out perfectly for the shots.

F A S H I ON
Where do you get inspiration from for your swimsuit designs? Before I start creating each collection, I research old magazines, watch movies, attend runway shows, and use my constant travels as inspiration for new trends and styles. I also listen to what customers are saying at the stores: what they want to see and what they don’t want in their beachwear. I then sit down with my design team and we decide on names, styles, and prints for each story within the collection. After a first draft of each style, we edit down to fine-tune the collection. I draw inspiration from all around me and wherever I go, from Hong Kong or New York for a business trip to the Amalfi Coast or Mexico for holiday, I’m always on the lookout for new styles and prints. Any advice to women on how to pick out the perfect swimsuit? Know what looks good on your body type and what you feel most comfortable in. If you feel comfortable in your swimwear, you will look gorgeous. If you are a smaller cup size then the triangle or push-up styles might work best and for those with a fuller shape the D-G U-bar style or even a control one-piece might work. It’s all about getting a perfect fit to achieve body confidence on the beach.
Heidi Gosman
What are some tips on looking stylish from beach to bar? This is one of my favorite subjects! Our luxurious, lightweight selection of kaftans, cover-ups, and jumpsuits are designed especially for this purpose. Whether it is a longlength, bandeau maxi dress, a drop-waist mini dress, or one of our on-trend playsuits, you can throw them on over a bikini and walk to a restaurant in style. What is your life motto? My motto in life is don’t be afraid to take risks. Travel is the gorgeous feeling of teetering into the unknown. I read that somewhere and it stuck. heidiklein.com

ConFESSIonS oF A PoRTERo AddICT A (BASICALLY ) BIRKIn TALE By anonyMous
H
ello. We’ve met before. You and I happen to be friends — or at least friendly . . . In fact, I am often one of the first women you call to co-chair your gala and I’m always one of the first you tap to pick up a table (or two). You’ve frequently complimented my fashion and, above all, my handbags and jewelry. I’m going to anonymously let you in on my shopping secret. It’s Portero.com. It is the luxury pioneer (surely in caviar-graincovered wagons) of the online resale world. Portero is a glorious e-boutique, possessing a collection seldom found in the world of e-commerce. Portero carries all my favorite brands: Cartier, Chanel, Hermès, Gucci. Everything on the site is authentic, meticulously curated, and in amazing condition. As for customer service, the concierge team is the best. Even my husband has a favorite sales associate, with whom he colludes on my gifts (he’s the best, but together they are incredible)! Yes, every six weeks or so, I too receive calls from Hermès boutiques enticing me with a rare or newly-available color, skin, or hardware choice. Unfortunately for Hermès, in most cases, if it’s a bag I want, I’ve often already acquired it from Portero. Portero always seems to have the newest and rarest Hermès bags before they are offered anywhere else. Portero’s team of experts is without peer; there’s just nothing like them. Elizabeth Bernstein, the company’s director of handbags, was the first to introduce me to Portero and its amazing service. The year was 2012, and I was sufficiently well versed in e-commerce, but not yet a customer of Portero. Within 24 hours of placing an inquiry for a rare croc Kelly, I received a call. It was Elizabeth; she had found the bag, in pristine condition. As you can imagine, I was thrilled. Elizabeth’s expertise in luxury handbags is beyond reproach; her seemingly endless knowledge is positively encyclopedic. Later on, she asked if I would be interested in a private consignment consultation: a kind of spring cleaning for exceptional closets. Handbags were only a fraction of my conspicuously extensive bounty. After paying a visit to my auxiliary closets in New York, Southampton, and Palm Beach, Elizabeth had a catalogue of accessories to sell for me on Portero. What impressed me the most, though, were the prices Portero was able to obtain for some of my more rarified items. For example, I had purchased a Kelly in January of that year for $8,000. Then, in April, Portero sold it for me for $15,500. I hadn’t worn the bag as the color wasn’t right for me, and made away with almost $4,000 in profit.
To this day, I’m still buying and selling, and have barely lifted a finger. Yes, Portero has all the boxes checked for handbags, but that’s only the beginning. Things get even more exciting when we take a look at the jewelry collection. From Van Cleef & Arpels to Cartier, from Boucheron to Bulgari, Portero has it all, usually in excellent (worn once or twice) to pristine (never worn) condition. In fact, every Alhambra piece I own from Van Cleef was purchased at Portero. Incidentally, I will be wearing some of my newest acquisitions — a complete Alhambra story in turquoise and gold — to Art for Life this year . . . Catch me if you can! Whether I am hunting another Hermès classic, a new Chanel treasure, a watch for evening, or a men’s watch for daytime from Rolex or Patek Philippe, Portero is not only my first stop; it’s usually my last. portero.com Social Life

Jetsetter Style: A Luxurious Stay In Ticino, Switzerland By Gregory DelliCarpini Jr.
Canton Ticino is Switzerland’s Italianesque region and offers a perfect blend of Italian living and Swiss quality. It’s Swiss run (so everything runs on time), but it’s Italian weather and Italian style with Italian gelato, Italian pasta, Italian architecture, and the Italian language. With Italian style comes good-living. Enjoy a hearty lunch at a rustic chestnut-shaded grotto (a Ticino-style restaurant that is most likely over 100 years old), or have an espresso while looking over the cobalt blue lakes of Lugano and Locarno. Bellinzona, the capital of Ticino, offers a picturesque Old Town and three superbly restored castles for the history lovers. The most stunning, Castello di Montebello, contains two museums. Or for the more adventurous, all you need to do
is look up. Soaring above the mirrored lakes are the forested peaks of the Alps that contain countless valleys with endless hiking options complete with hamlets, Romanesque chapels, and roaring mountain streams. We recommend staying in the Lugano region. Book your stay at the breathtaking The View Hotel (theviewlugano.com) and see how this hotel really lives up to its name. It has spacious balconies with glass railings that overlook the breathtaking Lugano lake. The view is priceless and opening the drapes in the morning is an extreme case of “curtain up baby.” Head to ticino.ch/en for more information on this charming and gorgeous region.

Sea Treasures Dive deep into the ocean with us as we explore the immense beauty benefits of marine ingredients that have been around for billions of years with Bluemercury Skincare Expert, Jackie Hugg. The sea’s healing powers not only hydrate the skin, but also have astonishing anti-inflammatory, cell-renewal, and antioxidant properties. Why are so many skincare companies harvesting marine ingredients for their formulations? As we all have experienced, seawater is extremely invigorating and detoxifying for the skin. The Earth is composed of 70 percent water, and that provides a huge resource for these mineral-rich ingredients, including multiple strains of algae. These resources have adapted to survive for multiple generations, making them highly concentrated in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and precious oils. The high nutrient levels in these substances aid in skin hydration, collagen production, cell turnover, and renewal. They also counteract and repair hyperpigmentation in a way that is soothing to all skin types. What are some of the most effective ingredients from the ocean? There are many star ingredients occurring within the deep sea and new ingredients are continually being discovered as harvesting and fermentation processes are being researched to maximize results. To begin, there’s mineral water as a toning treatment step and also as a makeup-setting mist. This serves to drive all serums and moisturizers deeper into the skin, and as a setting spray, it works to refine pores and bring radiance to a makeup application. Seaweed is also referred to as marine macroalgae, which provides powerful antioxidant protection and has detoxifying and anti-microbial properties.
What marine products packed with beauty benefits are available at Bluemercury? Bluemercury’s proprietary brand, M-61, emphasizes resultsdriven active naturals and contains seaweed in the form of red algae. M-61 SuperSoothe E Cream contains seaweed for calming benefits. Sea algae provides cellular nutrition rich in amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to nourish and revitalize the skin. The feature ingredient in Crème de La Mer is miracle broth, which is a potent fermentation of sea kelp and lime tea energized with the properties of light and sound to effect overall cell renewal. La Mer serums contain brown and white algae for firming and brightening benefits. Sea emerald is another rare plant that helps to restore skin elasticity and volume; this ingredient is the main emphasis in the Darphin Stimulskin Plus Serum.

Dr . Edward Fruitman on Trifecta Med Spa + Wellness A Nourishing Retreat for the Mind and Body By Thomas Fischer What is aesthetic medicine, and how does it help your patients? We use the term aesthetic medicine because we are a holistic practice that develops and utilizes certain protocols to evaluate a patient’s needs and [look] at them as a whole in comparison with a number of different medical and aesthetic problems. The cosmetic practice/incorporation of a med spa grew from there. Look at obesity — one of my specialty areas: you must treat the symptom of obesity in order to lose weight and keep it off . . . Answers for [obesity] were easier than people thought. Even when exercise cannot fix the problem it is very possible to reshape a person’s body with non-surgical intervention.
Y
ears into his career, Dr. Edward Fruitman noticed a trend: patients who experienced depression and anxiety also felt dissatisfied with their physical appearance. This realization inspired Dr. Fruitman to launch Trifecta Med Spa + Wellness. Keeping in mind the interdependency of mind and body, Trifecta Med Spa + Wellness is a nourishing retreat that focuses on both aesthetic medicine and mental health. The unique organization uses a holistic and medical approach to target signs of aging as well as ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and weight loss. The med spa offers a wide range of services, including injectables like Botox, laser hair removal, acne treatments, and anti-aging treatments like CoolSculpting, Ultherapy, HydraFacial, and Venus Freeze. A nationally recognized expert in the field of psychopharmacology, Dr. Fruitman has delivered over 700 lectures and presentations at various medical conferences, and many other medical/educational settings. I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Fruitman about his innovative and successful practice located in Manhattan (downtown and midtown) and Hewlett, Long Island.
What is the most fulfilling part of your work? At 15, I came as a refugee to the United States from the former Soviet Union. My experience was tremendously positive coming from a place where we were not wanted. I was so happy to come to America: a place where my family and I could belong. The struggle . . . for my parents to make a life for our family in America, coupled with a desire to help people, led me to become a psychiatrist. As I established my private practice, I was treating people who had the finances to do everything they could to make themselves feel better from the inside out. I found it a very sound approach to making a person feel better overall. What mental illnesses does aesthetic treatment help treat, and how so? I started in aesthetic treatment because we were looking at all available methods to treat depression. I have realized that about a third of patients don’t respond to traditional treatment methods . . . [and] that each person should be treated with an individualized treatment plan. Therefore, my team approaches mental health by giving patients the option to undergo genetic testing in order to diagnose their predisposition to developing depression. This ensures that any prescribed medication that is dispensed is based on the patient’s genetic profile. When medications do not solve the issue at hand, my team and I utilize other groundbreaking and unconventional methods, which in combination with psychotherapy and medication, have proven successful. One such method is transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy, an Social Life

FDA-approved procedure that works by activating the specific area of the brain linked to depression. In extreme cases or where a patient is suffering from acute depression, I have administered an infusion of rapidly acting agents that can reduce depression symptoms in under 24 hours. These treatments often work in tandem with standard treatments, enabling people plagued by this debilitating illness to lead normal and happy lives. As an expert on the subject, what are the particular challenges of treating adult ADD? Adult ADD/ADHD, in my opinion, is one of the most underdiagnosed psychiatric conditions present in our society. An estimated 4.7 percent of the population, or 9 million adults in the U.S. have ADHD. Of that 9 million, only about 15 percent have been diagnosed and treated; in addition, only one in four adults with ADHD were diagnosed in childhood. Experts used to believe that children would grow out of ADHD by the time they were adults. However in recent years, it’s been recognized that ADHD can often continue on into adulthood. Is there any science behind the anecdotes about feeling happier after Botox? A scientific study, recently published by psychologists at the University of Cardiff in Wales, found that people become happier, on average, once their ability to frown is diminished by cosmetic Botox injections. The researchers compared the results of a psychological test given to a group of women who received Botox injections with results of the same psychological test given to a group of women who got the placebo injections. In general, the Botox recipients reported feeling happier and less anxious. Even the women who did not report feeling more beautiful following a Botox injection received the psychological benefit of being less anxious and less depressed.
What kind of experience should someone expect when he or she comes to Trifecta? And what makes Trifecta one of a kind? At Trifecta we treat the whole person. My team and I will listen to what patients and clients want, but will only recommend and provide the services that will create a healthier you. I want our patients to really sit down and talk with our aestheticians, as well as consult with a doctor to make sure that they are treated with an individualized treatment plan. At Trifecta the approach is still medical. You have a doctor, aesthetician, and other professionals who understand what you need to truly feel better — with a gradual approach both psychologically and aesthetically . . . People need to understand that changing your face will not change the world’s treatment, but it is important to build them from the inside out in order for them to feel proud. What do you look forward to in the future of your business? At Trifecta, we are constantly looking for new solutions, treatments, methods, and machines that will help our clients live a happier and more fulfilling life.

ith his state-of-the-art office at 160 Crossways Park Drive in Woodbury, the famous Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg is taking all his procedures to the next level — so, before the summer is gone, consider making an appointment for a consultation. What’s hot in the world of cosmetic surgery this summer season? In a recent interview in this magazine, Dr. Greenberg said that his two most requested services continue to be breast augmentation and injectables. With Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery’s new state-of-the-art equipment and Dr. Greenberg’s ultra-popular (and one-ofa-kind) techniques, patients can expect natural results — comfortably and quickly, especially for his surgical patients. “In the past, breast augmentation recovery may have included considerable downtime and discomfort,” says Dr. Greenberg, a nationally renowned cosmetic plastic surgeon based in Southampton, Woodbury, and Manhattan. “After my 24-Hour Rapid Recovery breast augmentation procedure, not only are patients pleased with their natural, new look, but they recover quickly and easily.” With significantly shorter recovery time, Dr. Greenberg’s patients are often back to their normal activities within 24 hours of surgery. Dr. Greenberg reports that new implant technology and surgical procedure advancements allow him and his team to perform what he calls customizable breast augmentation. Patients are individually evaluated, allowing the ability to specifically match an implant to each patient’s own unique anatomy. “The new tools bring us closer to natural perfection than ever before,” says Dr. Greenberg. “These days, you can expect to be back at work or back on the beach in a matter of days.” Dr. Greenberg also takes injectables to a new level. His cosmetic services for men and women have become so advanced and so effective that each year more and more patients take advantage of the opportunity to find their fountain of youth. Injectables and dermal fillers gently plump skin and combat signs of aging by safely smoothing persistent wrinkles, relaxing facial folds, filling depressions, and adding volume to the face. “Patients continue to be amazed by the results of our procedures, a phenomenon that is a combination of expertise and cutting-edge technology,” says Dr. Greenberg. “Botox, Juvéderm, and Kybel continue to be at the top of the list for

must-have, tried and true injectables and dermal fillers. We perform many injection procedures weekly, and have developed techniques that enhance the use of these products to provide optimal results for our patients.” According to Dr. Greenberg, the new Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery Center has specialized injection suites that enable patients to receive Botox and filler injections in a unique, comfortable, and upscale environment. “We not only provide top medical expertise, but we also ensure that each patient is relaxed and attended to in a comfortable and luxurious setting,” says Dr. Greenberg. “I’m not sure if you’ll find that level of service anywhere else.” greenbergcosmeticsurgery.com Social Life

A DREAM SUMMER BODY WITH COOLSCULPTING By Sienna Davenport
A
re you struttng down Main Beach showing off your perfect silhouette to everyone? Or are you like most people who suffer from insecurities about certain bulges? Trifecta Med Spa has the latest beauty secret that will help you take care of problem areas quickly and with ease. It’s called CoolSculpting, and the revolutionary treatment is the answer to your dreams of eliminating cellulite. CoolSculpting is technology that freezes fat. It is FDA–cleared as a safe and effective alternative to liposuction. The non-invasive treatment is the natural way to eliminate stubborn fat without surgery or downtime, using proven cooling technology. The effects are so outstanding that it is the most popular and commonly requested treatment at Trifecta Med Spa + Wellness. Trifecta is the ideal place to receive this treatment for a multitude of reasons. The spa offers clients the option of using two CoolSculpting machines at once so they can freeze fat twice as fast. The spa has also performed over 2,000 treatments over the last two years. It is an early adopter of the newest CoolSculpting technologies and is a CoolSculpting-certified practice. The luxurious medical spa was one of the first practices in NYC to offer the treatment and its customer service is exceptional. There are several advantages to using CoolSculpting. The average fat reduction is around 20 percent for suitable candidates. The best candidates for this are people within 15 to 20 pounds of their ideal weight, are healthy, and have small pockets of diet- and exercise-resistant fat. There is no surgeon’s knife and no anesthesia required. The procedure doesn’t produce any discomfort and there is no downtime or scarring. CoolSculpting is most popularly used to treat abdominal bulges, love handles, and upper or lower back flab because these are the body areas that respond best to the treatment. Trifecta recently also began offering a new treatment that targets a double chin. The cost of treatment depends on the amount of treatment desired. Most applicators cost $750 per placement, and are on the body for one hour of computer-controlled cooling, followed by a two-minute massage. How does CoolSculpting work? A protective gel is applied to the treatment area and then the CoolSculpting device is applied, which uses a combination of gentle vacuum pressure and deep cooling. The technology targets fat cells at the subcutaneous level, effectively freezing stubborn fat away without harming healthy tissue and cells. You won’t feel anything. You can easily relax,
listen to music, or read while the technology works its magic. You will begin to notice results in the weeks after your procedure. Trifecta’s physicians have extensive experience with CoolScultping and are committed to helping their clients achieve their desired looks. During a free consultation at the spa, the friendly staff will answer questions and will customize a treatment plan for you. The spa offers the highest quality service to its clients by the best licensed aestheticians, who make use of state-of-the-art cosmetic treatments and technology. CoolSculpting is the perfect option for people looking to target smaller areas of fat that are resistant to exercise and diet. After one treatment at Trifecta Med Spa + Wellness, you will quickly become a fan of this revolutionary beauty treatment. Audrey Gruss & Martin Gruss Building Hope for Depression By Bennett Marcus
5K Walk of Hope
Martin Gruss, Audrey Gruss
Audrey Gruss is a pillar of Southampton society and the founder of the Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF). On Saturday, July 30, Gruss hopes you will lace up your sneakers and join the HDRF on its inaugural 5K “Walk of Hope to Defeat Depression.” You will help HDRF in its mission to raise awareness of depression as a medical disorder and fund research. Gruss will lead participants as they walk around Southampton Village. This will be a family event, so rain or shine, set the alarm and bring the family down for a day of fun. Participation is free but walkers are encouraged to raise $100 in exchange for a t-shirt to wear on the walk.
Hope for Depression Research Foundation Although Audrey Gruss is involved with other charities and nonprofits, HDRF receives the lion’s share of her formidable energy, because it hits closest to home. “My mother, whose name was Hope, struggled with this for years,” Gruss says. After her mother passed away, Gruss began asking questions and found that research in the field had stalled. “There has been nothing new since 1985 when Prozac was first approved by the government. It is shocking to realize that in 30 years there has been no new category of medication that works in depression and its related mood disorders,” she explained. These include bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and anxiety. The foundation’s aims are to find some type of medical test to specifically determine what kind of depression someone has, to get new and better treatments, to improve prevention, and to ultimately find a cure. “We’re still in the first stages of trying to find the causes of depression, identifying the circuits in the brain, and identifying the actual genes that cause depression,” Gruss reports.
Task Force To accelerate results at Hope for Depression, Gruss has put together a unique taskforce of leading researchers in different fields, including genetics and cellular biology, and they are collaborating on a strategic plan. Each researcher is executing a piece of that plan, and puts in his or her data in real time at a
data center at the University of Michigan. “It’s a new paradigm for doing scientific research,” Gruss says, because normally research is very slow, done separately by different universities and organizations, and only when it is complete is the data shared among disciplines. Hope for Depression is now marking its tenth year, and is making major strides: its research has identified specific genes that are altered by depression, and discovered brain proteins that may affect parts of the brain implicated in depression. Potential new treatments may begin clinical trials soon.
CEO of Good Works Gruss is the consummate CEO of good works. She is a member of the chairman’s council of the Museum of Modern Art, and her charitable work also benefits Literacy Partners, the Guggenheim Museum, the New York Botanical Garden, the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, the Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center Theater, and the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House where she was honored this past April. She has also been on the board of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for 25 years. Gruss and her husband, Martin, also funded The Audrey and Martin Gruss Heart & Stroke Center at Southampton Hospital and the Audrey and Martin Gruss Foundation, which funds projects in education, medical research, and cultural arts. hopefordepression.org Social Life

david greuner, md, facs By David Delay
D
r. David Greuner is a founding member and managing partner of NYC Surgical Associates, a multi-specialty practice with six locations in the tri-state area, each with its own on-site surgical facilities. Their broad-based expertise spans the spectrum of surgical specialties from neurosurgery to plastic surgery and their niche is using the most modern technological advances to offer their patients minimal downtime solutions to even the most complex surgical problems. Dr. Greuner takes great pride in the team he has managed to put together and the environment that he has cultured inside the offices, and the results show with thousands of patients satisfied over the course of the last six years. Dr. Greuner’s professional and personal life is a fascinating mix of personal achievements and societal contributions. For six years in a row, he has been voted a “Top Surgeon” by the Consumers’ Research Council. Dr. Greuner is only 39, yet he has already perfected a level of success that makes him a standout among his peers of all ages. He began his professional accolades at an early date when he was named chief resident of the year during his training at the Mount Sinai–affiliated hospital in Morristown, New Jersey. He trained there after beginning post-graduate work in general surgery at the University of Arizona–affiliated hospitals in Phoenix, Arizona. He was then awarded a two-year fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a one-year fellowship in body contouring and complex reconstruction in the massive weight-loss patient with the renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Victor Rosenberg. What do these two specialties have in common, you may ask? Interestingly enough, a great deal. Dr. Greuner’s particular expertise lies in addressing all of the problems that plague patients after weight loss, which is a large, and ever growing population in the United States today. As our society as a whole becomes more and more health conscious, the number of patients losing weight and keeping it off is growing annually. When we gain weight, our body is stretched — our skin, our tissue, and our blood vessels, especially veins — in all different ways. Often, when the weight is lost, this tissue recoils to a certain extent, but in most cases, there is still a significant amount of laxity that remains. Floppy, saggy skin; hernias; and bulging veins are all problems that typically remain after weight loss, and are a humiliating and persistent reminder that often acts as an impediment to future progress. Social Life
H E A L T H & bea u ty
Dr. Greuner addresses these problems, and specializes in novel, efficient, and effective solutions to all of these issues. He is the inventor of No Knife EVLT, a procedure that solves vein problems without even the smallest of incisions. In this procedure, a thin laser catheter is threaded through a needle so thin it leaves no scar as it seals veins that are too large and not returning blood to the heart, as they should. When veins do not return blood optimally, the blood pools in the legs, causing cramping, swelling, and sometimes varicose veins. His minimally invasive procedure alleviates the problem and is quick, painless, and successful. Dr. Greuner also specializes in reconstructing and re-contouring skin and other tissue after weight loss as well as repairing the hernias that often co-exist in these patients. The more active you are, the more likely you are to develop a hernia as a result of a muscular defect. Dr. Greuner believes all hernias should be repaired because they can possibly cause serious internal problems if left untreated, especially in patients who are undergoing strenuous physical activity. To address these issues, he pioneered another novel procedure, the Slim-Line Hernia Repair that corrects even the most complex hernia repair without using a traditional prosthetic mesh, and includes a cosmetic tummy tuck incision for an optimal cosmetic and functional result. In addition, by avoiding the use of mesh, he minimizes the most common risks associated with them in hernia repair, such as chronic pain and infection due to the use of prosthetic materials. The last issue he specializes in treating, which is often misdiagnosed in patients, especially after weight loss, is lipedema. Lipedema affects up to 10 percent of women and is characterized by large, columnar-appearing ankles, or “cankles,” even in those who are otherwise quite slim. It’s a genetic disorder and no amount of exercise or dieting will help. Dr. Greuner is one of only a few surgeons worldwide who is specially trained to perform a specialized liposuction procedure that enormously improves this condition. This procedure is also used to help patients who suffer from lymphedema, tissue swelling that is a common, painful complication after cancerous lymph nodes have been removed. He is dual board certified in general
surgery and cardiovascular thoracic surgery. Although it seems Dr. Greuner’s professional trajectory was a straight shot, it wasn’t. Along his journey, a car accident kept him from working, and his life as he knew it seemed to evaporate. But Dr. Greuner embraced life’s risks and persevered: he began all over again, and succeeded all over again. Today he is famous, with a long list of TV appearances and press profiles. You could spend a good while watching his appearances if you check out nycsurgical.net/media-center/ You’d learn a lot, too. Several years ago he founded NYC Surgical Associates — with locations on either side of the Hudson — staffed by highly skilled physicians who work as a team for their patients, all experts in their fields and personally groomed by Dr. Greuner. This was a deliberate response to his disappointment with the status quo and bureaucracy of hospital medicine. Dr. Greuner wanted a different paradigm. Patients with lipedema, lymphedema, hernias, and serious vascular issues often require more than one medical specialty to treat their complex cases. A patient at NYC Surgical is under the care of a cooperating team of physicians, and the patient knows beforehand what treatments are recommended and how much it will cost, prior to starting. Their administrative team works with insurance companies prior to starting to help patients minimize their out-of-pocket costs. Dr. Greuner’s life experiences — exhilarating and despairing — inform his charitable giving, which is extensive. Along with his partner, Dr. David Luu, he has facilitated more than a dozen open heart surgeries in developing countries under the auspices of the Heart Fund, their Paris-based philanthropic partner. He is a co-sponsor of Safe Horizon’s yearly clothing drive, and is a patron of Support for Breast and Ovarian Cancer|Share Foundation. As a lifelong serious athlete, Dr. Greuner competes in triathlons and other events for charity, and does his best to help any and all patients achieve their best functional status while taking into consideration their appearance at the same time. This, he believes is the future of modern surgery. As he says, “It’s not all about saving lives any more. Its about saving the quality of your life as well. Everyone deserves to have a certain quality of life, and I make it my life’s goal to help give it to them.” nycsurgical.net

Maya Henry The new generation it-girl, a philanthropist, young political activist & fashionista By Lillian Langvin Photography by Vincent Peters
Never before has it been as important to support philanthropy, politics, and human rights. With more millennials taking an interest in these topics and debating them online, it becomes a responsibility for those with more influence to bring issues forward to decision makers and the public. Just such a person is Maya Henry, who is not only an It-Girl, but a Next Generation It-Girl who uses her celebrity status to highlight subjects she feels strongly about in an effort to change our world for the better. But make no mistake: the “It” in It-Girl still rings true when it comes to influence and style — something that has placed Maya on an envious list of fashionable young women, and with invites to attend prestigious events such as the recent CFDA Awards in New York City. Maya Henry is the daughter of Azteca Henry and top national injury lawyer Thomas J. Henry. Following in her father’s footsteps, Maya devotes a lot of her time to philanthropy and community engagement. She launched Maya’s Corner in 2010, which is an endeavor to promote and assist causes benefiting children. Says Maya, “I have grown up knowing that we should help others. When I was little, I decided to start Maya’s Corner, which is an initiative to bring joy to less fortunate children. I saw many children in line with their families to get a holiday turkey and I wanted the kids to be entertained so I would arrange for Santa Clause to be there with candy and activities for the children.” Maya has also worked with numerous other charities, including the San Antonio YES Foundation, where she helped distribute school supplies to children in need. Maya is determined to pursue a career in international human rights in the future. This socialite has also demonstrated wisdom and drive well beyond her years in her athletic success as well as in her political
interests. She has already positioned herself as a regular on the Texas Tennis Championship circuit. Maya is also an avid supporter of the Hillary Clinton 2016 presidential campaign. Maya has put her expansive social media presence to use, hoping to mobilize her 40,000 Instagram followers in support of the Hillary Clinton campaign and to bring awareness to issues involving female empowerment and opportunities for Latina America women. Maya has had the opportunity to meet Hillary Clinton on several occasions. She hopes her own political activism will show her peers that you can make a difference. During a recent visit to the Hamptons, Maya attended the exclusive Peter Beard art exhibition in a private showing at East Hampton’s Gallery Valentine, together with her mother. The exhibition, which was presented by JetSmarter and Talent Resources, featured subjects such as Pamela Anderson, Hannah Davis, Chanel, Iman, Nina Agdal, Helena Christensen, and Alexandra Richards. All of the 25 unique art pieces on display were available for purchase, ranging from $50,000 to $150,000, with the total collection of works worth over a million dollars. Other notable attendees enjoying the art on display included Courtney Love with producer boyfriend Nick Jarecki, Beard’s muse Natalie White with sister Elizabeth White, art world collectors Helly Nahmad and Larry Warsh, nightlife impresario Richie Akiva, DuJour magazine’s Jason Binn, socialite Kelly Bensimon, Tony-winning producer Rose Caiola, lawyer to the oligarchs Ed Mermelstein, fashion designer Jill Stuart, and artist Erik Parker. In the same Hamptons visit, Maya had the chance to visit a number of newly opened restaurants, including JapanesePeruvian fusion restaurant Kozu; innovative Mexican restaurant Union Cantina; and Jean-Georges’ new restaurant at the

historic Hamptons hotel, Topping Rose House. She enjoyed her stay at Southampton’s new five-star boutique Hotel ZE, which is designed by world renowned architect Costas Kondylis in a modern European style. Maya was featured in media both nationally and internationally for her star-studded birthday party, which took place earlier this year. Entertainers included international recording artists Pitbull and Nick Jonas from the Jonas Brothers as well as eclectic dance group Gen8 and traditional Mariachi band Mariachi Azteca de America. Maya’s father, founder of the top personal injury law firm Thomas J. Henry Injury Attorneys, did everything to ensure the night would be a huge success for his daughter’s party; he brought in New York social event planner David Monn and his team of 150 to orchestrate the lavish fiesta which reportedly cost some $6M. Maya looked stunning at her party in a pale pink bespoke Rolando Santana gown with a fitted bodice and a full skirt. Her makeup was done by celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta, who has previously worked with Gigi Hadid and members of the Kardashian family. The photography surrounding the event was performed by renowned photographer Donna Newman, who has a portfolio ranging from Matt Damon to Michelle Obama. Needless to say, everything down to the smallest detail was carefully thought out and reflected the ‘celebration of life’ theme that the Henrys and Monn wanted to create; among these were 30-foot tall cherry blossom trees in full bloom to accentuate the springtime feel. The unforgettable private event offered guests an opportunity to rejoice with Maya and her family in the celebration of her Mexican heritage, commitment to family, friends, tradition, and community. “As a whole, the party was beyond my imagination. The venue and décor were amazing as well as the performers. Overall, my favorite part was the father and daughter dance. It was very special to both of us and I will always remember it!” says Maya. Most recently the It-Girl and activist attended the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Fashion Awards along with the likes of Beyoncé, Michael Kors, Heidi Klum, and Naomi Campbell. The annual event, which took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center, was hosted by comedian Joel McHale and in collaboration with Swarovski. CFDA is a nonprofit trade association whose membership consists of more than 400 of America’s foremost womenswear, menswear, jewelry, and accessory designers. Fashionista Maya Henry looked radiant in a full length semisheer Etro gown with long sleeves and a floral pattern, matched with jewels by David Webb. Maya sported a trendy triple braid hairstyle by expert hair stylist Laura Polko and makeup by celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta.
Guests at the CFDA Fashion Awards included some of the biggest names in fashion, including Anna Wintour, Adriana Lima, Irina Shayk, Heidi Klum, Alessandra Ambrosio, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Laverne Cox, Ryan Seacrest, Jay Z, Blue Ivy Carter, Ciara, Harvey Weinstein, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Brandon Maxwell, Olivia Wilde, Monique Lhuillier, Rachel Zoe, Jason Wu, Doutzen Kroes, Alexa Chung, Taylor Hill, Jessica Chastain, Victor Cruz, Claire Danes, Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Dwayne Wade, Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, Coco Rocha, Jonathan Cheban, and Jennifer Hudson. At the event, Maya was seated with Canadian international fashion model Coco Rocha and reality television personality Jonathan Cheban, who share Maya’s interest for fashion and style. The evening’s greatest surprise was Beyoncé. Guests had no inclination that the superstar was at the event when CFDA chairwoman, Diane von Furstenberg, presented Beyoncé with the Fashion Icon award. Beyoncé, who was visibly moved by the awards, said that her mother Tina Knowles has long been her inspiration. “When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels didn’t want to dress four black country girls,” she told the audience. “We couldn’t afford designer dresses. My mom was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and creativity to give her children their dreams. My mother and my Uncle Jonny designed all of our first costumes and made each piece by hand. And when I wore these clothes onstage, I felt like I had an extra suit of armor. It was so much deeper than any brand name . . . my mother and my uncle and my grandmother were with me . . . I couldn’t fail.” Stay tuned for the next moves of this busy New Generation It-Girl in her pursuit to prove that being an influencer and fashionista combines just perfectly with being a philanthropist and young political activist. mr . bill cunningham Tribute to a Legend No Longer With Us
B
ill Cunningham, the iconic New York Times fashion photographer, who died on June 25 at age 87, possessed an Old-World charm that is as unforgettable as his legendary pictures of the city’s rainbow of outdoor and indoor outfits. He referred to the women he photographed as “children,” even though their childhoods were long past. For Bill, who worked nearly 40 years at the Times, and became a celebrity himself (something he did not want), his greetings were a sign of respect for those fortunate enough to grace his ever-present lens. He was quiet, almost unnoticeable, and ever polite. If he seemed a man of another age, he was. He did not adapt easily to ever-changing social trends. As the Times itself noted, Bill himself was no one’s idea of a fashion plate. He was usually charmingly out of style in his blue French worker’s jacket, khaki pants, and black sneakers, with the 35 mm camera he cherished never more than inches from his roving eye. To illustrate Bill’s nature and his standing is my memory
of one episode in particular: He once visited my Manhattan apartment to photograph a St. Patrick’s Day party I had arranged. The room was filled with green-clad partygoers who often appeared in fashion and other popular magazines, and who held some weighty positions in the city’s business and social life. Yet, when Bill walked in, the room fell silent, and all eyes were upon this rather gaunt, unlikely figure who uneasily stood in my doorway, camera in hand. He slipped out of the limelight quickly after he did his job with utter professionalism. It was as if he had vanished from view — just the way he liked it. I saw Bill frequently at fashion and charity events where he photographed the famous, the social, and the not so famous: Annette de la Renta, Anna Wintour, David Rockefeller and then many of us philanthropic and social people. He was equally a street photographer, taking shots of what he happened to favor, as he rode his trademark bicycle through the streets of Manhattan.

If he wanted to photograph you, he made that clear. If not, he would gently move you aside. No one took offense. Bill was doing the work that earned him honors from the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America, a retrospective of his photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the French Legion of Honor. He was also celebrated by Bergdorf Goodman, where a life-size mannequin of Bill appeared in one of its windows. In 2009, the New York Landmarks Conservancy declared him “a living landmark.” Those of us who knew
Bill realized full well that while he would be privately proud to be so declared, it was something he would never want to discuss publicly. It was also in 2009 that The New Yorker called his “On the Street and Evening Hours” columns the city’s “unofficial yearbook.” Bill’s art was what mattered most to him. He would walk away from salaried jobs if he was not permitted to do what he needed to do. “Once people own you,” he said, “they can tell you what to do. So don’t let them.” There is a lesson in that for all of us. So, thank you, Bill. You did it the way you liked. Social Life

About Bill Cunningham William John Cunningham Jr., known in New York City’s fashion and journalism circles as Bill, was born March 13, 1929, in Boston, the second of four children. As a child, he liked to make hats, and as a teenager got a job at Bonwit Teller. Although he won a scholarship to Harvard, he quit after only two months. He described himself as “hopeless” at academics. After working awhile in the advertising business for his uncle, Bill began taking pictures for Women’s Wear Daily, and later for the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune. He became a regular contributor to the New York Times in the late 1970s, but refused a full-time staff position until the mid-1990s. He remained with the Times for the rest of his life.

The New York Center For Children (NYCC) 21St Anniversary Spring Cocktail Reception
Accessible Art Fair & MvVO ART Hosted a Jury Meeting to Select Top Talents
2016 CFDA Fashion Awards
The New York Center for Children hosted its 21st anniversary spring cocktail reception at Clement Restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel. The organization celebrated more than two decades of helping the most disadvantaged children achieve their potential. The event featured a live auction where one participant won a customized Vespa from Vespa of Manhattan.
The Accessible Art Fair and its US partner, MvVo ART, hosted a jury meeting where over 50 top contemporary artists were selected by a prominent jury. These lucky artists will be part of the 2016 Accessible Art Fair for top emerging and mid-career artists of quality, which will be held at The National Arts Club in Gramercy Park, this coming November.
The CFDA honored the world’s most venerable designers at an event that’s commonly referred to as “The Oscars of fashion,” in New York City. The CFDA Fashion Awards is the most important annual event in the calendar of American fashion, and one of the few times a year that so many different fashion influencers come together in one place at the same time.

Tarzan’s Eternal Appeal A stripped down Alexander Skarsgard, who plays the king of the jungle in The Legend of Tarzan, confessed, “You have to tuck away the junk — it’s incredibly painful. There’s some weird kind of underwear situation where you just like pull it — I’m not going to get too graphic here, but let me just tell you: it’s torture.” Skarsgard added, “I wanted to get a bit bigger, because I’m naturally quite lean, but I didn’t want Tarzan to look like a broiler.” His co-star Margot Robbie, who plays Jane, said, “I have nothing in common with her. I hate her. It was a really tricky one to get my head around.” Christoph Waltz, who always plays a convincing villain, on making the movie stated, “There’s a new technology that allows you to go back to old, big, grand movie styles and build sets, so most of what you see is actually there.”
Jared Leto @ Suicide Squad Alexander Skarsgard in Tarzan Margot Robbie in Tarzan
Movie’s Bad Guys & Good Girls Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto confessed, “I’m not insane, I’m voluntarily indifferent to conventional rationality.” The Little Prince’s Benicio Del Toro said, “The first things I ever did were bad guys. With the bad guy, you have more freedom to go further out than with a good guy.” Hugh Grant conceded, “Everyone loves to be the villain.” Disorder’s Diane Kruger admits, “I would do anything for a part, nearly anything. Being in movies doesn’t mean being pretty.” Gal Gadot admits, “I never planned on being an actress, just as I never planned on being a model; it kind of happened to me.” Mechanic: Resurrection’s Jessica Alba: “I used to take critiques very personally. Now I have no problem with it.” Smart! Tommy Lee Jones: “Characters with no integrity are just as interesting as characters with lots of integrity.” True. Hands of Stone’s Robert De Niro tells the truth for all of us: “It’s murder when you try to stay in shape and keep your weight down.”

Creating the Perfect Hamptons Home with Stefan Reyniak By Lizabeth Zindel
35 Town Line Road, Wainscott
“I came across a piece of property in Wainscott — a perfect piece of land — and saw the opportunity to create a home,” says entrepreneur and businessman Stefan Reyniak. He’s talking about the spectacular new, seven-bedroom, seven-and-ahalf bath, 5,200-square-foot beautiful estate that he just completed building on a lot that overlooks a 40-acre field. Reyniak’s passion project began when he became enchanted with the potential of this shy acre lot. He bought the property with a vision to unlock the value that others might have overlooked. Having called Sagaponack home his whole life,
Reyniak had an intimate knowledge of the East End. “I took everything I knew about life in the Hamptons and designed a brand new house that feels like it just belongs here. It has white oak floors and is very bright and beachy. There are lots of glass doors that open up to create an indoor-outdoor feeling.” Although Reyniak works in commercial real estate lending and has built homes for himself, this was his first foray into residential development. “I learned a lot about zoning, design, and construction, and partnered with the best people.” This includes teaming up with Joe Farrell, the founder and president of the largest building company in the Hamptons, Farrell Building Company. “When we first sat down, Joe said he could get Social Life

shovels in the ground the next day — and he did,” Reyniak says. The house boasts three levels of living space. With an intuitive floor plan, the ground floor entryway leads to a grand living room with fireplace for entertaining; a state-of the-art, eat-in kitchen; a formal dining room with exquisite finishes; and a junior master suite. Upstairs, the large master suite, sequestered from the rest of the home, includes a spa-like bath, a home office, generous walk-in closets, and private access to the terrace. The finished lower level offers a billiards/ game room, a screening room, a home gym, a wine cellar, and staff bedrooms. Outside, the unique attached cabana area with a wet bar, a bathroom, a changing area, and a covered porch
with fireplace opens to the heated Gunite pool and spa, framed by a generous lawn (with a professional landscape package). A spacious three-car garage completes the property. “Going from the initial dream to the finished version is quite a journey,” Reyniak says. “This home is going to make a family very happy.” 35 Town Line Road, Wainscott $6,995,000 Exclusive broker: Gary DePersia, Corcoran e/ gdp@corcoran.com c/ 631.899.0215

Oasis in Your Backyard with Patio.com By Madison Cole

t’s summertime and our backyards are what we daydream about as the workdays drag by and the weekends get closer. From hosting BBQ soirées and pool parties to soaking in the summer sun, your backyard should be a relaxing, yet fabulous sanctuary. Patio.com brings us our favorite backyard furniture pieces to turn our outdoor space into the ultimate entertainment and relaxation oasis. The experts in all things backyard started with hard work and an outdoors dream. As a high school student, David Ross started a pool-service company with a mere $50. Initially, he sold pool chemicals, pool toys, and maintenance equipment. With an insatiable entrepreneurial spirit and a lot of hard work, his small start-up business grew exponentially and expanded into new product offerings. When the first Patio.com retail location opened in Ross’s hometown of Westport, Connecticut, his brother Philip joined him. After graduating from medical school, Mitchell Ross joined the family business and initiated the patio furniture division of the business. Online shopping was rolled out shortly thereafter and a patio furniture retail star was born. “The retail landscape continues to change drastically, affecting every aspect of shopping,” says Mitch Ross. “Patio.com was the first entry in the retail world where its domain name was used on every storefront. This symbiotic relationship between e-commerce
and true brick and mortar is felt by many analysts to be the paradigm of future retail.” Today, Patio.com has 11 showrooms in the Northeastern United States, including four in Connecticut, three in New York, and one showroom each in Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The showrooms currently carry just about anything a family could possibly want for indoor and outdoor entertainment, from casual furniture and billiard tables to grills, ping-pong tables, and even video games. Patio.com carries only the best brands, including Barlow Tyrie, Brown Jordan, Cast Classics, Gloster, Kingsly Bate, Winston, Lloyd Flanders, Lane Venture, Outdoor Classics, ScanCom, Suncoast, Tropitone, Tucci, Woodard, Winston, Brunswick Billiards, Lynx, and Viking, among others. Being able to cross-market for the stores and Internet business allows the company some leverages. “Many advantages are offered by this combined ‘click and brick’ approach. Customers can choose the method of shipping they like best. The showrooms’ existing network allows Patio.com to offer quick shipping and full customer service, including complete delivery and assembly of furniture,” explains Mitch. patio.com Social Life

beth krupa interiors By Robyn Freedman

reating a sense of place is what lies at the center of every Beth Krupa Interiors (BKI) home or commercial project. There’s a real specificity to the spaces she designs, and every BKI project represents the chance to capture her client’s personality and passions — and always in unexpected ways. Behind everything BKI does is a deep belief that design transforms not only our surroundings, but also our outlook. BKI is a full-service interior design firm with a global perspective, and that comes from Beth’s having lived abroad for many years. Her life and experiences in London, India, Hong Kong, and NYC continue to influence her firm’s designs. Beth, who is the firm’s principal and lead designer, works to create a distinct and meaningful sense of place for her clients, and she loves seeing how everyone thrives when this is accomplished at the end of each project. This year Beth received two national design awards from the Interior Design Society: out of fourteen categories, Beth won two DOTY awards — one for living spaces and one for dining spaces. To Beth and her team, great style is all about editing and editing well. It’s true in fashion, where Beth worked as a fashion buyer for years with Bergdorf ’s, Bendel’s, and Calvin Klein, and where she saw that what you’re not wearing is as important as what you are wearing. Today, BKI applies that same philosophy to the home or commercial environment. In the interiors they design from their studio in Stamford, Connecticut, style encompasses everything that makes clients feel good, as well as everything that is also beautiful and evocative. The look is chic and minimal, original and purposeful, and every space is defined by both its usefulness and its meaning for the people living, visiting, and working there. This is the way BKI creates places that sustain its clients. Over the years, Beth has developed a clear and transparent practice that lets her clients understand their project from its largest overview to its smallest details. Room by room, and item-byitem, BKI demystifies the design process, and the thought process, behind the creative considerations leading to their clients’ story being told. This comes from the desire to create an idyllic space — one that gives clients a breathtaking moment on installationday when their newly designed home is revealed to them for the first time. When they can’t believe how all the decisions have come together. When they suddenly realize it’s all theirs, and that everything their hands touch and their eyes see is there completely, absolutely, and only for them. BKI is available for projects in the home as well as retail spaces, boutique hotels, offices, and lobbies. DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: Scot Meacham Wood By Sarah Parker Young
C
harm is synonymous with Scot Meacham Wood, a Southerner who also has a deeply rooted connection to Scotland. His magnetic personality sets the tone with everyone he meets and he brings robust life to each design project. His designs are classic and timeless, but made fresh with elegant and cultural influences, bold patterns, textures, and sumptuous fabrics. Scot established his firm Scot Meacham Wood Design in 2001 and has become a design darling with both the press and the public at large. He is inspired by his heritage as well as his thirteen years working with Ralph Lauren. The designer spent time with Social Life, to discuss his signature style, his project in East Hampton, and his thoughts on interior design. How would you describe your design style? I like to think of my personal style as a jaunty hybrid of classic European elements mixed with a healthy dose of Southern hospitality.
sea-grass floor coverings are glorious under bare feet — as well as perfect for sandy toes. What are your considerations when designing a beach or weekend house? For me, vacation homes are all about entertaining and hospitality. One rarely needs to fret with the day-to-day concerns of a functional mudroom or maximizing pantry storage. These homes are all about multiple dining areas, rooms for conversation, and amazing bedding. Second homes also give both me and my clients an opportunity to be a bit bolder with some of the design decisions. It’s not like we have to live with these pieces on a day-to-day basis. How did you approach the design of this vis-a-vis the architecture and setting of the property? The house had such a strong point of view architecturally that the interiors just needed to not get in the way! We were blessed with beautiful classic moldings, so I just worked within a simple color palette that would emphasize these amazing details. Then we placed the furniture to keep the flow of traffic from the abundance of French doors easy and intuitive. Social Life

Are there particular patterns, textures, and color palettes that appeal to you? I’m always on the ‘more is more’ side of design. My natural inclination is to bring a certain amount of pattern mixing to any project that we work on — whether we’re working with a parade of neutrals or a confetti bag of colors, there’s going to be a vibrant pattern play. For this home, we mixed classic beach stripes with toiles and beefy linens to bring interest to the furnishings. I love the sight of the yards and yards of linen draperies wafting in the afternoon breeze! The sturdy
H OM E
How did you connect this interior with the Hamptons landscape? The exterior of the home is so gorgeous that we kept a great deal of the interiors visually calm. The color palette was a classic pale blue and sand, and was used to keep the dividing line between outdoors and indoors as invisible as possible. I loved seeing the house with all the French doors open — and the easy transition to the property. Did you have a favorite room in this particular house? This is easily one of my favorite projects, but I will always love the entry to the house. The simple space is just so amazing, and we had such a great time playing with proportion and color within the room. There was always great light because of the abundance of windows, but the addition of the giant mirror just bounced the light all around the room. Can you tell us a little bit about your new product line? I’ve always been such a fan of great textiles. Scotland was easily going to be the inspiration of our first collection. I was able to travel to there on several occasions and just submerged myself in the culture. I began to create textiles based on colors that I was seeing. I wanted to become the source for authentic highland tartans as well as creating custom designs to bring these traditional fabrics into the present. But most excitingly, I’ve been searching the world for amazing accessories for the home that we’re able to share on our website: everything from antique tartanware boxes to glorious decorative pillows! You seem to have harnessed the spirit of Scotland in some of your design work and products. How did that affinity come about? My family comes from Scotland — so it’s always been a natural fascination of mine! I began traveling to Scotland fairly regularly about 20 years ago, and find the most amazing inspiration every time that I’m there. Do you have any favorite places, restaurants, or shops in the Hamptons? There’s nothing like an evening at Nick & Tony’s . . . or lunch at The Golden Pear! scotmeachamwoodhome.com

Lucknam Park Wiltshire, England By Joe Alexander
Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theatre, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City. His stories have been featured in numerous national magazines, including Haute Living. Joe lives in Manhattan and Southampton.
The Cotswolds On the way to Wiltshire, about ninety minutes by car from London, we whizzed by picturesque fields dotted with grazing sheep and horses until we got to the village of Thickwood, where we stopped in front of an imposing wrought-iron gate that marks the entrance to Lucknam Park. This magnificent Palladian mansion, built in 1720, is set on 500 acres of parkland and manicured gardens. This palatial estate was a private home until 1987, when it was lovingly restored and, luckily for us, is now one of the U.K.’s most elegant country house hotels. There is a lot to do here: guests can indulge in the Hywel Jones, the Executive Chef for the Michelin-starred The Park as well as The Brasserie. hotel’s world-class spa facilities, go hiking, biking, or use the portraits. Adjacent to the lobby is a sun-filled wood-paneled impressive equestrian center. Fine dining options and even library lined with leather-bound books, comfortable seating, cooking lessons with tasting sessions are on the premises. And and a flickering fire. This proves to be a perfect spot to read nearby you can explore all the charms of the Cotswolds, and the paper with a cup of tea or have drinks after dinner in Luckthe historic city of Bath. It’s like being invited to one of those nam’s Michelin-starred restaurant, The Park. Beyond the liEnglish country houses we see in the movies. brary is the grand drawing room, which is decorated in shades of burgundy and gold with yet another fireplace, with an Old The Park Master painting over it. This flanked by majestic beech trees and surrounded by rolling pasis the room where the butler serves drinks before dinner while tures with prancing horses, at the end of which sits Lucknam, you peruse the gourmet menu. The Cornflower Suite Lucknam Park has only 42 rooms and suites, and they are all luxurious and uniquely designed; several even have romantic four-poster beds. Our rooms in the Cornflower Suite are some of the house’s grandest: a symphony of moss green and beige with scarlet accents. The entrance hall wallpaper is patterned in a blue floral motif with exotic birds perched on leafy vines. Sunlight streams through the windows in the spacious suite providing an airy ambiance. The views from these rooms are the best in the house because all of the rooms look out onto that endless allée of ancient trees that reminds you that you are in the one and only Cotswalds. One corner of the bedroom was anchored by a sumptuous, rose-colored chaise longue, the other by a large comfy reading chair. Details matter and Lucknam’s designers don’t disappoint. The pale emerald draperies have exquisite crystal fringe and the tiebacks have tassels with crystal balls. The doorstop was a stone carving of a sleeping collie. Our enchanting sitting room had an antique desk by the window with a white orchid carefully placed on it, and a sofa with extra plump pillows where we plopped and watched the news on TV. The suite’s white marble and mahogany bathroom is massive, with both a walk-in glass shower and an Old World freestanding tub. lucknampark.co.uk
A Michelin Star We went to the library before dinner, where we had a choice of seven different Champagne cocktails before decamping into the drawing room for hors d’oeuvres. These fancy cocktails included The Green Sparkle with midori melon and
manzana verde, and my favorite, The Ocean, a mix of liqueur de la passion, mandarin, orange, and passion fruit. Yum! The Park restaurant here, under the creative baton of the chef Hywel Jones, has earned its well-deserved Michelin star. The room is beautifully appointed, punctuated with dreamy landscape paintings and rococo mirrors. The tables are covered with impeccable white linens and set with fine crystal, silver, and china festooned with colorful butterflies. For dinner, The Park offers two tasting menus, and one is a surprise vegetarian. There are also à la carte options. We were due to experience the chef ’s table on the next night, so we opted for the main menu. We started with duck foie gras two ways: with pickled plum and honey and with chamomile jelly. We followed with tender entrées of venison and Andrew Morgan’s Brecon lamb, accompanied by smoked onion risotto, cured ham, and cep mushrooms. The meal’s pièce de résistance was a vanilla soufflé. When the captain fractured the top of this confection to spoon in a superb mango sauce, the wafting fragrance was heaven-sent. A perfect end to an impeccable meal. This room is also used in the mornings and a more hearty English breakfast you won’t find anywhere in the U.K. The muffins are marvelous, especially when you slather on the Wiltshire honey that comes in a glass jar straight from a local farm. The soft-boiled eggs come with blue stamps on them saying “Clarence Court,” their hatchery.

Chef Hywel Jones
The Spa
On our last night we tried the chef ’s table at Lucknam’s cooking school, a buggy-ride away in one of the estate’s original outbuildings that has been turned into a state-of-the-art kitchen and dining space. Chef Hywel Jones and his staff prepared a multicourse feast right in front of us that included poached Cornish langoustine, cauliflower, and shellfish; braised fillet of turbo and Cornish crab with hand-rolled macaroni and Wiltshire truffle butter; roast Scottish diver scallops; and spiced pork croquette. To conclude the evening we had a trio of desserts: vanilla crème brulée, bitter chocolate sorbét, and raspberry doughnuts. All the above were matched with a seemingly endless parade of fine wines and Champagnes. After dinner, we had tea and brandys in the warmly lit library, and played cards by candle and firelight. Lucknam also has a more casual, contemporary dining spot, The Brasserie, serving light lunches and informal dinners prepared with seasonal ingredients. This bôite, located in the spa building, also offers al fresco dining.
Lucknam Park’s expansive lawns and walled gardens make a perfect setting for its luxurious spa, which is executed in wood, marble, and glass to reflect the natural setting. Expert specialists are on staff to provide myriad spa treatments, including crushed sea salt and seaweed body envelopment, amethyst wraps, kundalini back treatments, body scrubs, and massages. A full range of beauty treatments from manicures to body waxing is available, as are wellness therapies like flotation, Reiki, and reflective sunlight therapy sessions. The spa’s extensive facilities include a heated indoor pool with a 20-foot-long gas fireplace that lines a wall, making every swim a glamorous adventure. There is also an indoor-outdoor hydrotherapy pool, an outdoor salt-water plunge pool, thermal cabins, experience showers, and a fully equipped fitness center. The hotel also offers well-being retreats that include yoga and Pilates workshops. A glass wall at one end of the pool magically opens so you can swim outside into the heated Jacuzzi. You will feel pampered here! Social Life

Equestrian Center Lucknam Park’s equestrian center offers 35 horses of all sizes and capabilities, and anyone, from complete novices and children to more seasoned riders, will feel comfortable. They also offer lessons, group riding, and specialized clinics. The Queen’s granddaughter, Princess Zara, who was on the British Equestrian Team in 2008 and 2012, has been spotted riding here. I rode out on a black-and-white horse that could best be described as a big, comfortable armchair. Jumping on a horse is a great way to explore the estate’s 500 bucolic acres, and you can also arrange longer rides through the Cotswold countryside.
The Cookery School Lucknam Park’s Michelin-starred executive chef, Hywel Jones, offers classes that will help anyone who enjoys cooking master new skills, and even the more experienced cooks among us can hone their abilities. The Cookery School offers full and half-day classes in a state-of-the-art facility inside a small restored cottage on the estate. The enjoyable lessons start with coffee and pastries and all the ingredients, plus an apron or chef ’s jacket, and, of course, lunch are provided. What’s Doing in the Cotswolds By Madison Cole
Outstanding Natural Beauty The Cotswolds is 800 square miles of gorgeous rolling hills in South Central England, about an hour and a half drive from London. It’s the area’s stone that gives the rural region’s charming villages and stately manor houses a golden hue. The Cotswolds are designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), a protected status similar to Britain’s National Parks. the-cotswolds.org
The Royal Crescent In Bath, considered Britain’s most beautiful city and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Royal Crescent is one of the country’s top attractions. Dating from 1767, it is an arcshaped row of palatial homes arranged around a great lawn, and one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in Britain. The Royal Crescent has been featured in the television adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, which was set in Bath, and in the Keira Knightley movie The Duchess.
The Royal Crescent
The Roman Baths Just a few miles from Lucknam Park is the historic city of Bath, which the Romans established as a spa in AD 60 thanks to its natural hot springs, still popular today. Renowned for its beauty and graceful architecture, Bath was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town is an oasis of urban sophistication in the English countryside, offering cultural attractions like theater, live music, shopping, restaurants, and museums. Jane Austen lived in Bath, and the area was the setting for many scenes in her novels. At 40 Gay Street in a classical Georgian townhouse is a museum dedicated to the author. The place is decorated in the Regency style of Austen’s day, and clothing and other artifacts from the period take you back in time. romanbaths.co.uk

Lacock Abbey Judi Dench and Benedict Cumberbatch filmed the BBC series The Hollow Crown at Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire. Fans of the show, which ran from 2012 to 2016, can retrace their steps by visiting the attached mansion and strolling the grounds and village streets. The Abbey’s 13th-century architecture provided the perfect setting for this costume drama. This summer, costumes from the series, including those worn by Cumberbatch and Sophie Okonedo, have been on display in the Great Hall of the Abbey. Scenes from Downton Abbey and Wolf Hall have also been filmed here, but actual film history was made at Lacock Abbey: in 1835, William Henry Fox Talbot, who resided there at the time, created the world’s first photographic negative.

Mr. William Blathwayt Dyrham Park, a country estate of 274 acres in South Gloucestershire, dates back to 1068, but the current baroque mansion was completed in 1704, when William Blathwayt, an important member of William III’s court, acquired the property. Thanks to Blathwayt’s royal connections, Dyrham became a showcase of Dutch decorative arts, with an extensive collection of Delftware, paintings, and furniture. The National Trust took over the house in 1961, but the interiors and décor remain largely as they were. Dyrham Park was the setting for the British TV series Dr. Who, but its biggest claim to fame is Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins treading its halls in 1993’s The Remains of the Day, based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel. The house is fabulous, but don’t miss the gorgeous gardens. Originally, Blathwayt had installed formal gardens in the Dutch tradition with elaborate terraces. Later, tastes changed, and a more natural English style landscape replaced the formal gardens. The terraces remained, but gradually became overgrown. However, work to restore the magnificent terraces and their statues, flowers, fountains, and orchards began in 2001 and is ongoing. When we visited this year, they were replacing the grand house’s roof. Not only were we allowed to walk the scaffolding being used to do the work and check out the stunning views, we were also able to leave our mark on history. The National Trust was selling new slate tiles and we were encouraged to sign and date the underside of what will become the new roof. We were told that in 100 years they would lay them out on the lawn so our ancestors will know we had been there and helped preserve this historic house. Fun! dyrhampark.com

The Cotswold Chauffeur Insider tip: if you’re in the Cotswolds and don’t know where to go, Jon Moorhouse, known as the Cotswolds Chauffeur, is the gentleman to contact. Situated in the picturesque village of Castle Combe, where Steven Spielberg filmed Warhorse, Moorhouse specializes in private sightseeing tours of the area. Most tours are daylong, but he is happy to customize his services to meet your schedule. He will pick you up at your hotel, locally or in London, in a Mercedes S-class limousine, although larger vehicles are available to accommodate up to six people. Owner-chauffeur Moorhouse is a lifelong Cotswolds resident with vast knowledge of the area’s countryside and its meandering streams, quaint villages, and historic castles. Cotswolds sheep are famous for producing luxurious wool, and Moorhouse explained that the name derived from a combination of two ancient words: cots, which means sheep enclosure, and wolds, which means rolling fields. Lucknam Park also recommends Moorhouse. cotswoldchauffeur.co.uk

CliffSide Paradise on the Amalfi Coast Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa is Simply Spectacular By Madison Cole

P
erched on a cliff overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa is, hands down, arguably the best hotel on the Amalfi Coast. The property is a coveted secret for those who seek to disappear for a luxurious, peaceful, private getaway. Located between Positano and Amalfi, the sky-skimming 17th-century monastery was restored (with impeccable love and care) into the spectacular and very exclusive boutique hotel that leaves little to be desired.
Enchanted Gardens The unrivaled grounds, which hover over the Mediterranean Sea with breathtaking panoramic views, are covered with four levels of gardens designed in the tradition of palatial Italian villas: plush landscaping, plentiful lounge chairs, and canopied daybeds. The air is filled with many botanical wonders like bougainvillea, lavender, agapanthus, coreopsis, rosemary, roses, and local-origin lemon trees, to name just a few. Approximately 5,000 plants were imported for the gardens from 10 different countries to flourish in cycles throughout the year, growing in beauty season by season. Social Life

They are enormous; some are multi-leveled; and the rooms come furnished with all the luxuries you can imagine (including pomegranate Santa Maria Novella bath salts, which are a lovely treat for your skin and senses). Each room is named after an herb that the nuns grew in their convent garden to make medicines. Vaulted ceil-

The vanished-edge pool is unquestionably the most dramatic along the entire Amalfi Coast. Architecturally sculpted into the rock-base cliff of Monte San Pancrazio at the lowest level of Santa Rosa’s sloping cascade of gardens, the elliptically shaped fresh-water infinity pool blends into the sea, disappearing between the horizon and sky. Sip on a local rosé wine while enjoying the mesmerizing views. It’s stunning.
Serenity at the Spa Guests can indulge in complimentary use of the spa’s 753-square-foot thermal suite, consisting of connected spaces for relaxation and well-being within the stone sauna, domed herbal steam-room, hydrotherapy pool, experience shower, crushed ice fountain, and tepidarium (a room that is pleasantly warm for relaxation, an homage to Ancient Rome). You could spend an entire day here decompressing by strolling from amenity to amenity.

Ristorante Il Refettorio This resort’s executive chef, Christoph Bob, designed an innovative Mediterranean menu that includes only the freshest ingredients from the surrounding Campania region. Christoph has said, “I fell in love with the destination and its food. Nowhere on Earth does the sun and the soil give us such richness of flavors as do the fresh produce, herbs, and seafood found right here on our coast.” With Monastero Santa Rosa’s own herb and vegetable garden on-site, every morsel combines the freshest local, organic ingredients of Conca dei Marini. Chef Bob uses a 100 percent Italian, special select olive oil from Conca dei Marini produced specifically for the hotel. It’s called Il Mulino della Signora, meaning “the mill of the lady.” He also sourced the finest pasta, the famed Pastificio dei
Campi Gragnano, with a unique shape created for the restaurant. Pastificio dei Campi is known as the best pasta in Italy, bronze-drawn, slowly dried, and prepared in a traditional way respectful of the environment.

Eden Roc at Cap Cana is a sanctuary.

Villa Maria Romance in Ravello By Lizabeth Zindel
L
ocated on the majestic cliffside town of Ravello, the elegant Villa Maria offers spectacular views of the dazzling Amalfi Coast. A former country mansion of a Roman nobleman, the summer manor has been restored into a beautiful hotel by the Palumbo family, owners from four generations. After climbing the charming stone pathway from the main square, you arrive at Villa Maria through an enchanted garden overflowing with fuschia bougainvillea and walls of fragrant jasmine. The moment you step into the courtyard, a sense of peacefulness envelops you. Recognized for its natural beauty, the property was selected by the French guidebook Relais du Silence as an oasis of peace, the only hotel in the area to receive this honor. The hotel’s superb restaurant offers authentic dishes of the Campania region on a panoramic terrace that jetties out towards the sea. Enjoy lunch or dinner under a pergola covered in wisteria while taking in sweeping views of the ocean and the mountainside’s lush vineyards and lemongroves. The restaurant offers a cooking school called Nonna Orsola, where, after selecting fresh produce from the hotel’s ancient organic garden, the chef guides the class in preparing a three-course meal. There’s also a delightful pizza school where a pizzaiolo (pizza maker) teaches how to make the miracle of the Neopolitan pizza using a typical wood-burning oven. Decorated in Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles, the beautiful property is adorned with Murano glass chandeliers, hand-
painted majolica tiles, and magnificent antiques. The 23 rooms are furnished with comfortable period furniture, and each has a terrace or balcony overlooking the mountainside and sea. While enjoying your stay at Villa Maria, you are welcome to visit the hotel’s two sister properties: Hotel Giordano, a relaxed villa with a beautiful swimming pool covered with majolica, and Villa Eva, a glorious venue for banquets and weddings. Ravello is known for its world-class celebration of music, and Villa Maria’s concierge is happy to help guests procure tickets to concerts by the Ravello Concert Society. These include open-air performances in the famous gardens of the historic Villa Rufollo, a favorite haunt of Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi, Arturo Toscanini, and Leonard Bernstein. Countless more artists have found inspiration in Ravello’s miraculous beauty. D. H. Lawrence wrote Lady Chatterley’s Lover in a house near Villa Cimbrone, and many of the Bloomsbury group, including Virginia Wolf, once walked the town’s medieval streets. Greta Garbo, Gore Vidal, and John F. Kennedy also were drawn to the romance of the area, and recent VIP guests to Villa Maria include Edward Norton, Hugh Grant, Matt Dillon, and Susan Sarandon. Villa Maria captures the pure essence of Ravello’s breathtaking beauty. When you stay there, you feel like you’ve wandered into a graceful paradise in a perfect corner of the sky. villamaria.it Social Life

A Day in the Social Life Bridgehampton By Karen Holly Berliner
Topping Rose House, One Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike
I
t’s awfully hard to be that monkey in the middle, but Bridgehampton manages to pull it off with an air of playful confidence. Never compelled to compete with its fellow towns and hamlets and hugged on either side by Southampton and Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton offers plenty on its own. In fact, on Saturday, July 23, the weekend this magazine comes out, the fifth St Barth Hamptons, with Christie Brinkley as this year’s host, will take place under an elegant tent on the grounds of the Bridgehampton Museum. From 6 to 10, enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and music. stbarthhamptons.com for tickets. Bridgehampton features top-notch dining, upscale boutiques, world class wineries, and some of the most beautiful horse farms in the region. It is a desirable destination for all. With such a glorious summer well in the works, the first order of business for us is the beach and what a picture-perfect beach it is. A bona fide member of the exclusive Hamptons beach scene known for its celebrity
sightings, Mecox Beach is a pristine sandy spot popular for many reasons. For one, its volleyball setup with a dedicated court rather than a simple court invites an impromptu co-ed pickup game. Food is also available here should you crave an après game snack. Fishing and surfing add flair to the swimming and wading scene, and residents’ barbecues on the beach (with a town permit) add sunset gazing ops. We enjoy the better part of the morning into the early afternoon here. After this, we head over to our first lodging spot, the Topping Rose House, which is within walking distance of Bridgehampton’s boutiques, art galleries, and cafés. Topping Rose is the Hamptons first full-service luxury hotel, with 22 elegantly appointed guestrooms, including twin and king rooms and suites in the main house and four cottages on the property. Each cottage has a roof deck, and is within easy access to the full service spa and fitness center. Topping Rose has a heated outdoor pool and a complimentary shuttle to local beaches. Social Life

For dessert we take a ride over to the famous Candy Kitchen. This nostalgic luncheonette and soda fountain conjures up a simpler time by offering efficient and friendly service and basic and delicious menu items. This is the perfect spot for a scoop of delicious homemade ice cream and a smooth cup of coffee. After heading back to the beach for the last remnants of daylight, we return to Topping Rose for dinner. The onsite restaurant serves authentic farm-to-table cuisine and features produce grown on the property’s acreage. The acclaimed chef Jean-Georges offers
such delicious options as crispy salmon sushi with chipotle mayonnaise, or for a heartier choice, soy honey lamb chops with smoked chili glaze, charred onions, and broccoli rabe. We note the 24-hour room service for the hotel’s guests. The next day we shop and browse, stopping for lunch at Almond. Featuring contemporary French bistro fare, this historic space offers antique tin ceilings and a spectacular hand-carved bar, finished with casual wood-topped tables, dark wood wainscoting, and ambient lighting. We enjoy a classic dish of escargot with garlic and Pernod and share a portion of pan roasted black sea bass with saffron, mussels, piquillo peppers, and grilled bread. On Sunday evening and after a long walk along the water, we feast at Osteria Salina, with a Sicilian supper Sunday menu available every Sunday from 4 until 8. The dinner includes a multi-course prix fixe meal served family style. Led by the executive chef, Cinzia Gaglio, the menu also features signature dishes such as the insalata Salina, a salad made

with mixed baby greens, chickpeas, ricotta salata, tomatoes, and cucumbers; and the polpette, a savory dish made with Salina meatballs in pomodoro sauce and pecorino Sicilano. In the morning, we head to our next lodging spot, The Bridgehampton Inn. Built circa 1795, this clapboard inn is located in the heart of the Hamptons and features six lovely rooms and an on-site cooking school, allowing us a great opportunity to brush up on our skills in the kitchen! (It’s owned by the same folks who own the Loaves & Fishes food shop in Sagaponack.) We enjoy the English breakfast served on the veranda. It is the last day of our weekend here and we head over to The Bridgehampton Museum. Eager for a dose of culture, we view the beautiful antique structures and learn a bit about the history of Bridgehampton. On August 13, from 5 to 8, work by local artists and artisans will be on view during a silent auction and cocktail party, one of several events planned for the season. On August 19, The Great Food Truck Derby is returning to Bridgehampton. A caravan of New York City and Long Island food trucks park at the Hayground School, offering ethnic eats along with New York wine, beer, and soft drinks. The event will benefit the Hayground schoolyard projects in the region, which provide culinary arts training for local kids. We can’t wait for the next generation of great chefs in the Hamptons. Let me inspire you: An Interview with Andrea Correale the president and founder of Elegant Affairs
Andrea Correale
By Anthony Michael Elegant Affairs is everywhere! Why is everyone turning to you for their catering needs? Well, mainly because we do much more than just catering. Elegant Affairs is really a full-service, offpremise catering company that services Manhattan, Long Island, and the entire tri-state area — and there’s nothing we can’t do. We cater and plan all types of events, from social gatherings in people’s homes or rented venues to corporate and nonprofit galas to weddings and bar mitzvahs . . . everything! Lots of people say full service. What does that mean to you? That we handle everything for our clients! And, we are consultants. People know they want to have an event, but they don’t always know how they want it to look or feel or what works best from a logistical standpoint. We can assess the party site and make recommendations that will ensure a fabulous event. For example, if a client is having a party at home, not only do we cater the food, but we also arrange for all the other party needs: tables, tenting, chairs, flatware, glassware, valet parking, music, lighting — everything a client could possibly need. What is the secret to your success? It’s pure passion and a healthy dose of experience! Elegant Affairs is a team of a wide-range of talented professionals who truly love what they do. Our planners and expert culinary team and event staff have one goal: to consistently provide fabulous food, stylish visual presentations, and impeccable service at each and every event we produce.
What’s the hottest trend in catered food these days? How about 12 hot trends? 1. People love street food: “eatz from the streets.” We are seeing this in food trucks but also transformed into clever food stations. 2. Argentinean barbecue or smoked meats and fish combined with a variety of local vegetable side dishes. 3. Fruit, flower, and herb-infused water bars and natural-ingredientbased signature cocktails. 4. Gelato sandwich bars featuring a variety of gelato and cookie options. 5. Gluten-free and vegan anything and everything. 6. Peppers are a trend! Sriracha and other unique hot sauces are super popular. The hotter the better. Salted shishito peppers on the bar as a snack are a craze. 7. Oversized burger bars including not only the expected sirloin but also other burger options, like lamb, chorizo, lump crab, tuna, and black beans and rice. The little slider is out and has been replaced with a much larger version. 8. Mocktails are big — people are asking for healthy nonalcoholic choices for their bar menus. 9. Chef-manned guacamole bars featuring not only the usual but also more unique versions like grilled pineapple chipolte mango guacamole with crispy bacon crumbles. 10. Beachside clam bakes, paella bars, whole catch-of-the-day fish encrusted in sea salt and cooked on the grill. 11. Corn on the cob bars served up with every topping imaginable: flavored butters, spreads, herbs, cheese, bacon, and spices. 12. Cobblers: all-American blueberry, apple, peach, and cherry served simply à la mode — oversized and baked or deconstructed in a glass or jar. If you were to receive a call from anyone in the world asking you to pull off a large-scale event at their manse, which one person would you want it to be? Oprah. I love her. elegantaffairscaterers.com Social Life

hile crisp, sparkling whites and rosés often represent the ideal waterside libation, sometimes it is good to mix it up with a throwback vintage cocktail. You don’t even need a Gatsby-inspired party with seersucker pants and 1920s garb to pull off poolside Prohibition Era drinks, ripe with tart sweetness and evocative of classic Ford Model A and Bugatti automobiles, twelve piece bands playing Cole Porter, and Art Deco beach enclaves. The 18th Amendment making it illegal to sell alcohol went into effect in 1920, paving the way for the thirteen-year absurdity that was Prohibition, called the “Noble Experiment” by President Herbert Hoover. Thankfully, the result was anything but noble: people drank more than ever and fashioned some of the most delectable cocktails ever enjoyed, ones that have deservedly become classics today. Here are some of our favorites for a vintage twist on indulgence during a summer sunset (or sunrise — we are not picky).

Simple to make and delicious, this is widely considered the “signature drink” of Prohibition, named for an army captain who liked to be driven to the bar in a motorcycle sidecar. Basically, it is cognac, Cointreau, and lemon juice in equal parts, shaken in a cocktail shaker with ice and then strained into a chilled glass that has been rimmed with lemon juice and sugar.
ingredients: 1 ounce white rum 1 ounce pineapple juice 1 teaspoon maraschino liqueur 1 teaspoon grenadine Named for the famous actress, this was a favorite libation for American boozers who fled to Havana during these years. Like the others, add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake. Strain into a chilled glass and garnish with a cherry.
soutH siDe ingredients: 2 ounces gin 1 ounce lime juice 1.5 ounces simple syrup Mint leaves Known as the “Prohibition gem,” the South Side was reputed to be Al Capone’s favorite drink. Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with additional mint leaves.
coRPse ReviveR no. 2 ingredients: 1 ounce gin 1 ounce Cointreau 1 ounce Lillet Blanc 1 ounce lemon juice 1 dash absinthe This one demanded inclusion — and not only because it is possibly the best name for a cocktail in history. (And yes, there are Corpse Reviver No. 1 and No. 3.) Published in 1930 in Harry Craddock’s Savoy Cocktail Handbook, it packs the stellar punch one would expect. Again, simply add all of the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake. Strain into a chilled glass and garnish with an orange or lemon peel. Millennials New Favorite Spirit Manhattan Moonshine By Peter Blackman
S
o you want to experience whiskey? Well, where do you start? Much like deciding to suddenly start drinking wine, deciding to start drinking whiskey can be a daunting task. With endless varietals, a generally intimidating population of connoisseurs, and flavors wholly unlike those found in other liquors, beginning to drink whiskey can be very intimidating. Now, with an increasing number of millennials becoming interested in trying whiskey for the first time, a need has arisen for an approachable whiskey, one soft enough for new whiskey drinkers and without the unfamiliar flavors of oak and smoke that typically turn new drinkers away from whiskey. Enter Manhattan Moonshine, a silver whiskey aged less than one hour so that instead of heavy oak and smoke flavors, it simply has a soft grain-forward sweetness and round, spicy finish, making it more approachable for new whiskey drinkers and an easier transition from the vodka, gin, or tequila that they were previously drinking. In addition to being softer and more approachable than heavily aged whiskeys, Manhattan Moonshine has another trick up its sleeve that has been drawing in new drinkers: versatility. Because it lacks the heavier barrel flavors that limit the ingredients that aged whiskeys can mix with, Manhattan Moonshine can actually replace other spirits in various cocktails. Put simply, this means that millennials looking to start drinking whiskey can start by using Manhattan Moonshine in their current favorite cocktail. Whether it is a margarita, a cosmopolitan, or a martini, Manhattan Moonshine easily replaces the main liquor ingredient and adds a complexity and boldness of flavor that only a whiskey can supply, while also providing a smooth transition into whiskey for new drinkers. It is this same versatility that is exciting the top bars and restaurants across New York, where top mixology programs like Highlands and Bar Cyrk are using Manhattan Moonshine to create new, never-before-seen cocktails that cater to the ever increasing number of millennials who are interested in drinking whiskey. Whether in a Moonshine Negroni or a whiskeypolitan, Manhattan Moonshine is being used to reinvigorate classic cocktails and to create seasonal cocktail creations with ingredients from matcha green tea to lavender. The Manhattan Moonshine formula was carefully created during a year of experimentation by Manhattan Moonshine’s founder and CEO, William Kehler, and its master distiller and author, Ian Smiley, who literally wrote the book on moonshine
(Making Pure Corn Whiskey: a Professional Guide for Amateur and MicroDistillers). The result is a unique grain bill featuring a combination of oats, rye, spelt (an ancestral form of wheat) and malted barley, all grown in New York State. With its unique grain bill and production process, Manhattan Moonshine delivers a smooth, grain-forward whiskey flavor that no other silver whiskey can relipcate. Ultimately, this soft yet complex flavor and the versatility that it enables are what have allowed Manhattan Moonshine to establish itself as a staple on the New York cocktail scene and a perfect entry point for new whiskey drinkers. Manhattan Moonshine’s unmistakable, chic 750 ml Art Deco decanter retails for $39.99. manhattanmoonshine.com

MEET THE ARTIST: DAVID NADAL By Kevin Berlin
Social Life presents an exclusive interviewwith David Nadal, underwater image maker & Southampton native
T
he photographer David Nadal grew up in Southampton and began taking underwater images in his early 20s. Nadal has spent over 20 years on his Island Files series, and his exhibition venues have included The Watermill Museum, Art in the Park, the Southampton Public Library, Ashawagh Hall, and the Benson Gallery. He has extensively covered Art Basel Miami Beach, and for the past 15 years, he has been making an ongoing documentary about the Robert Wilson Watermill Center.
You’ve been working on your Island Files images, just off Crooked Island, in the Lower Bahamas for over 20 years. Yes, It took me quite a while to build up a system. First ground transportation: a scooter shipped in from the main island, which is a two day boat ride. Water transportation: a ten foot inflatable boat. Hard bottom was the key in dealing with the sea and the waves. The boat was powered by an 8 horse Mercury outboard engine, also shipped in from from Nassau. Final piece of the system: a compressor to fill the scuba tank. Specially rebuilt in Florida, and returned to the island, which took three years to get the specifications right. All this was necessary because I knew I’d be on my own.

ART my mask, and I found a new world. Underwater. From that time to 40 years later, through many dives, I evolved to what I do present day.
David Nadal, setting up equipment, Lower Bahamas. 2013. Island Files series.
I understand Crooked Island is a very remote place. I have been inspired by the natural beauty of the reef. Because the island is so remote, nature is untouched there. I am attracted to the color, texture, and shapes I know so well. It’s hard to find natural places like this because of the damage we are doing to our planet. It was worth the effort to get there. These particular images of the Island File are unique. I found it was worth the challenges because I realized a personal dream of creating these images. Some days I would come up with nothing. And other days I would come up with maybe two or three. All depending on weather, clarity of water, and what I’d find at a specific point and place. I encountered many incredible rare things I’d never seen before.
You also have a lot of experience diving in Long Island. There are a lot of wrecks around Block Island near Montauk. One was a U-boat, a very dangerous dive. Deep cold and dark. Another wreck, The Grecian, which is not located as deep, is more interesting. Once, I came up with bronze pipes from the boiler of the wreck and made wind chimes with them, which I enjoy in my backyard. The newest underwater work? Is a canvas of what I call Crusty, which is an underwater sponge. Another even larger work, which I call Mom, shows another sponge in very unique vibrant color. I relate very closely to the animals that I discover and have much love for. Find Me for example: I found this little fish in all his glory. He really inspired me.
You were born in Manhattan and grew up since early childhood right here in Southampton. Yes, in a very unique house which was an actual windmill. I started my diving adventures right there in my family’s swimming pool. My older brother had a small scuba tank, and I got curious one day. So I put on the tank in the pool myself, and ducked below the surface with David Nadal, Find Me, digital archival print, 45 in. x 60 in., 2013. Island Files series.

Tell us about the Tulla Booth Gallery. The Tulla Booth Gallery opened in 2003 and we feature fine art photography exclusively. We attract collectors from near and far. The gallery has a good reputation and consistently offers highly acclaimed artists. We represent 20 photographers who are either world-renowned or emerging. What inspired you to open in Sag Harbor? Opportunity. The space had been a photography gallery for 12 years before me, and it was brought to my attention that space was available since the previous gallerist was retiring, so the karma was there. Sag Harbor has a different energy than the other villages in the Hamptons because of the active harbor and energy of the bay. There is lots of day and nighttime activity in restaurants, and we have the Bay Street Theater, live music, and many special events for families. The village has grown so much since we opened and so has the gallery.
You are a photographer yourself. Does your personal background and interests as a photographer influence how you present your artists? Very much so. I understand the need for creating the ultimate image and many times a small suggestion is all that is needed to get on the right track. I’m also more than sympathetic about the struggle. Most of the emerging artists appreciate my gentle coaching. Is there a unifying philosophy or vision behind the Tulla Booth Gallery? We love photography, which was once considered a craft, but has now joined the world of fine art. It is our vision to present authentic photography and feature established and emerging contemporary photographers from the 20th century to today. It is our goal to present iconic images that transcend their subject, making them timeless and collectable.
Stephen Wilkes, Deep End, photograph archival pigmented print 30Â in. x 40 in.
A lot of your artists live locally and you have close personal relationships with them. How is that important? There is a strong art community out East; it is good to be with kindred spirits. This spirit continues from the days of Jackson Pollack and Willem de Kooning and others who are considered the founders of Abstract Expressionism. That energy continues out East today in all the arts. Your new show focuses on water and related themes. Can you explain the popularity of water images? Water. What better way to welcome the summer than to pay homage to the element that surrounds us. These particular artists have a passion for how they perceive it. I think each photographer is very evocative and their work stands alone. Water, whether it be the ocean, lake, or pond, is full of symbolism and metaphor. Out here on the East End we’re surrounded by it, so it’s impossible not to feel drawn to water no matter where we turn. The work in this show is very inspirational. Some are slightly calmer while others are very dramatic. Either way, they’re all quite exciting. They make you feel closer to nature. It’s the love of water. The photographer Stephen Wilkes travels to iconic locations all over the world to create his works. Can you tell us about Wilkes’s work, and in particular the Deep End image with a swimming pool ladder? Simply, Stephen was up in the Catskill Mountains and saw a freshly painted swimming pool so he climbed in and took the photograph, loving that the ladder was not perfect. That was in 1981. And Wilkes’s Santa Monica Pier? Stephen Wilkes’s wildly popular Day to Night series includes exciting images of the most beloved cities and sites and events of the world. As part of his ongoing series he wanted to capture the iconic Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles County, which he felt captures the essence of Southern California. Wilkes photographs from a stationary 50-foot crane, shooting 12 hours from day to night and gathering from 1,200 to 1,500 images, and uses 100 or so to form one ever changing image from dawn to dusk. He was recently featured in the newest National Geographic issue celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. He is on a quest to complete

his vision photographing for an upcoming limited-edition, fine art publication titled Day to Night. Please see Stephen’s June 3rd lecture on TED talks: “The Passing of Time Caught on a Single Photo,” which has nearly a million viewings on YouTube to date. Daniel Jones has also become famous. A lot of people just saw his television segment “Always Shoots for Perfect” on the CBS Sunday Morning show. Yes. Daniel received even more recognition for his evocative landscape images in black and white. In the segment, it is especially interesting to watch him demonstrate his use of a large-format 8 by 10 view camera and talk about his growth as an artist. The key word for any photographer is composition. Jones’s Seaside Expressions has also received a lot of attention recently. His newest body of work, the Seaside Expressions series, is almost painterly and it creates a visual moment that pulls the viewer in. In these photographs, taken with a digital camera, the motion one sees is done entirely in the camera. The stunning color is all true to nature, altered only by the atmosphere created by the weather, light, and in-camera movement. This body of work, a new beginning for Dan, has been widely admired by our collectors and fans in the gallery. Jones captures the beauty of nature through powerful images that are also simple and peaceful. Dan calls the North Fork home. We continue to have a stunning success with the beach series. And Path to Beach? Path to the Beach with its broken fences by Daniel Jones is a very
appealing image for our clients. The strong metaphor leading us to feel the excitement of the known but then again the unknown over the dune. Blair Seagram is an extremely popular artist, especially in the world of surfers. She recently was commissioned to create surfboards. I’ll quote her here: When my lens turned toward surfers I was inspired by their keen sense of timing catching a wave then riding across it. The sequence of images that make up the surfing panoramas is less about a decisive moment than about a series of moments or continuity of actions that are presented as one still image. Can you tell us more about Seagram’s 1000 Steps? Bonaire lies about 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela on the continental shelf of South America. The island is essentially a coral reef that has been geologically pushed up and out of the sea. Bonaire is a popular destination for scuba divers who come to explore its reef. 1000 Steps is one of the coral beaches along the lee side of the island accessible to divers. The entire coastline of the island was designated a marine sanctuary in 1979. Of course, the gallery is not limited to images about water. We offer authentic photography in black and white and color and feature photographs in the following subjects: landscapes, seascapes, still-life, flora, fauna, exotic travel, figurative lifestyle, celebrity, and documentary. Our goal is to present iconic images that transcend their subject, making them timeless and collectable. You can find us at 66 Main Street, Sag Harbor. AVIKZER ROMAN GALLERY COMES TO EAST HAMPTON By Kevin Berlin
Social Life presents an exclusive interview with Devora Avikzer Goltry and Damien A. Roman, the co -directors of Avikzer Roman Devora Avikzer Goltry dabbled in the arts throughout her teens and even attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, but eventually her love of fashion design led her to find success in the retail clothing world. She launched her brand in her first location in Soho, in the early 1980s and within a few years she had a wildly successful chain of over a dozen stores in international locales, including France and Japan. For over two decades, Avikzer satisfied her creative passion as an avid art collector, and she always knew that she would eventually return to the art world. As the co-director of Avikzer Roman, Avikzer will be showcasing a whole new aspect of her creative talent.
Damien Roman started his almost 20-year-career as a curator and art dealer while attending his sophomore year at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He started by exhibiting the work of fellow art students and other emerging artists in the Lower East Side back in 1997 when there were only five or six galleries in that neighborhood. He then went to work for a small gallery on Orchard Street that same year. Roman, now based in East Hampton, has spent the past 13 years selling Modern and Contemporary art on the East End and in the greater New York area.

AVIKZER ROMAN will feature a rotating roster of important mid-career and established Contemporary artists, and a curated selection of exceptional investment quality, Modern and Post-War Contemporary Art. Its program will be representative of the eclectic and vibrant international art market, featuring new work from Asia, Europe, South America and North America. The gallery will also serve the community as a collaborative project space introducing clientele to new curatorial voices and emerging artists. Annual exhibitions will feature the work of outstanding local artists as well. Big news! This fall you are opening a new gallery in East Hampton, Avikzer Roman. How did it come about? Devora Avikzer Goltry: A mutual friend and I were talking about my lifelong dream of opening an art gallery. Big things
were happening for me and it really felt like the right time. Eventually Damien’s name was brought up and it just clicked. Damien Roman: I got a call from Devora: she ran it by me quickly and asked to meet to talk details. My immediate thought was, What a great idea! After taking a year to sell privately and do a few fairs, it just so happened that it was the right time for me as well. You have backgrounds in both art and business, what brought you together? DAG: I had been buying art from Damien for years already. I was a client at his previous gallery and I really liked working with him. He was very knowledgeable and I liked his eye. We already had a good relationship.
ART
DR: Devora was fun to work with. She really knew what she wanted, but she was open to new things. Always interested in seeing something new, exciting. She has works by [Milton] Avery, [Pablo] Picasso and [Willem] de Kooning, but she also loved to buy the work of my contemporary artists like Steven Klein and Jessica Lichtenstein. She also has a great eye.
true, but never boring. The minority, the 20 percent, will be art works by undiscovered talent. I am very excited to introduce new artists to our clientele. In the back, you’ll find works by Milton Avery or Eric Fischl, but in the front, you can discover a new artist with artworks starting at a very reasonable price point.
There is a lot of pressure for galleries to have a presence in New York City. Why locate in East Hampton? DR: The simple answer is that this is home. My family is here and I have lived here for the past 13 years. I also love the idea of having the opportunity to bring something new to the Hamptons art scene.
Upcoming plans? DAG: Getting the doors open this fall.
DAG: I have had multiple homes and shops in the Hamptons over the past 30 years. This is truly a second home to me. An obvious choice when deciding where to start. I also agree with Damien, I think that the Hamptons needs something fresh, a new perspective. DR: We also have access to a very exclusive clientele here. You have many of the same people in NYC, but it’s more intimate here. For a few months of the year, we have a very captive audience. Is there a particular philosophy or vision behind the gallery? DAG: We both love bold and exciting work that pushes boundaries. The idea is to find artists that combine both an interesting concept with an equally strong method or process. DR: Exactly. Could you describe what I have heard described as your 80/20 approach? DR: The majority of the artwork you see at the gallery will come from mid-career and established artists — the tried and
DR: We are looking into a few art fairs as well. Describe an exciting work or two that you are currently exhibiting. DR: Dean West is an incredibly accomplished Australian photographer currently based here in New York. He has won numerous international awards and his work has been exhibited in many important institutions around the world. Palm Springs I is from his newest series titled The Painted Photograph. Real in depiction and imaginary in association, The Painted Photograph contains a set of rigorously composed, scenic character portrayals that merge the pictorial traditions of cinema and documentary photography. The works owe a great deal to the staged imagery of Philip-Lorca diCorcia and Jeff Wall, embedded with a system of signs, visual cues, and biases that can assist but not explicitly define what exactly is happening. In this series, West reconstructs personal experiences and encounters in an ongoing investigation of his surrounding environment. Through the sampling and deconstruction of these moments, the surreal images look at how memory, according to West, ‘is not a video recorder [but that] it’s a constructive activity that is in many ways accurate but prone to interesting errors and distortions.’ Tie this in with photography’s ability to both record and deceive, and West’s allegorical simulations force the viewer to consider the relationship between narrative meaning and their own subjectivities.

And Sarah Slappey’s painting Forest? DR: Sarah Slappey is an American painter from South Carolina now based in New York City. This artist’s paintings portray invented worlds that evoke feelings of dreamy instability and pleasure mixed with fear and shame. The imagery seduces a viewer into a scene using beauty, narrative, and humor, only to gradually unravel themselves as images portraying suffering. Open-ended narrative and innuendo enhance the destabilized, sinister tone of the paintings. Deliberately minimizing the information given slows the unfolding of the image and forces the viewer to participate in the completion of the story, while simultaneously suggesting an unseen perpetrator. The victim, or body parts of victims, are mere byproduct of the painting. Fantasy worlds are not resolved escapes, but rather provide a context and space for the dismantling and exploration of what it means to reproduce the feelings of simultaneous pleasure and pain. The imagery and execution call upon the artist’s roots in the aesthetics of the Southern Gothic. Slappey graduated from Wake Forest University in 2006 and completed her MFA from Hunter College in 2016. She has exhibited in both solo and group shows across the United States and in Europe. Have you finalized the gallery’s new East Hampton location? DR: We have our eyes on the perfect location on Main Street, and we are currently in the process of locking that down.

Geraldo Rivera Iconic Broadcaster, Award-Winning Journalist, Television Host, and War Correspondent By Elizabeth Darwen
R
Geraldo Rivera
ecognized as one of broadcasting’s most enduring figures, and most recently for his delightful participation in Dancing With the Stars (DWTS) season 22, and as a previous finalist on Donald Trump’s reality business show The Apprentice: Celebrity Edition, Geraldo Rivera is still best known as the legendary reporter for WABC-TV in New York who presented a series exposing the deplorable conditions at the Willowbrook State School for the developmentally disabled. These award-winning reports led to a government investigation and the institution was eventually shut down. Before joining ABC’s Good Morning America, Geraldo had been a host of ABC’s Good Night America, where he presented the first television broadcast of the famous Abraham Zapruder film of the assassination of President John Kennedy. He then began an eight-year association with ABC’s 20/20 as an investigative reporter. One of his hour-long reports, The Elvis Cover-Up was for more than two decades 20/20’s highest rated. In 1987, Geraldo began producing and hosting his groundbreaking talk show The Geraldo Rivera Show, which continued to air for 11 years. From 1998 until 2001, he hosted a series of highly rated investigative specials on NBC. In 2016 Rivera hosted the one-hour special Fox News Reporting: Beauty & the Beast — When Kate met Chapo. Rivera sat down with Mexican-American actress Kate del Castillo to discuss her relationship with Joaquin Guzmán, better known as “El Chapo,” the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel. The actress spoke in-depth about how the two became penpals and the secret meeting they later had with Academy Award– winning actor Sean Penn. Also during this special, Rivera reported on El Chapo’s pending extradition to the United States, El Chapo’s fascination with Donald Trump, the role the Mexican government has played, as well as the potential impact his incarceration will have on the drug epidemic in the U.S. Additionally, Rivera talked with special agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Special Operations Division for the Americas.
Throughout his career as a reporter, host, and correspondent, Rivera has received more than 170 awards for journalism, including the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, three national and seven local Emmys, two Alfred I. duPont–Columbia-University Awards and two Scripps Howard Awards for journalism. He is also the winner of the 2000 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for his NBC News documentary Women in Prison, which garnered two other awards; and he received the Scripps Howard Foundation national journalism award for Back to Bedlam. In addition to his extensive broadcasting career in the United States, Rivera was a veteran foreign correspondent, who has been on the frontline of virtually every international conflict since 1973. He has great expertise in South Asia, South and Central America, Africa, and the Middle East, covering the international drug wars of tribal territories in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. His vast experience covering conflicts has spanned from the violent coup in Chile and the Yom Kippur War to the civil wars in Guatemala, the Philippines, and Nicaragua as well as the ethnic conflicts in Lebanon (1980–1983) and Kosovo (1998–1999). In 2000, he went to Colombia to cover the country’s civil war, and has covered the fighting from the frontlines in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Lebanon on scores of assignments. Prior to joining Fox News, Rivera served as host of CNBC’s number-one rated prime time show, Rivera Live, where his critically-acclaimed coverage of the O.J. Simpson civil trial verdict set an all-time CNBC ratings record. Rivera is a graduate of the University of Arizona and Brooklyn Law School and is the author of seven books, including the acclaimed HisPanic: Why Americans Fear Hispanics in The U.S. and his best-selling autobiography, Exposing Myself. His war memoir, Geraldo of Arabia, From Tora Bora to Trump, will be published later this year. He is married to the former Erica Levy, and he has five children, the youngest of whom, Sol Liliana, turns eleven this year. foxnews.com/person/r/geraldo-rivera.html Social Life

Dideo Films Photography: Capturing Love Stories By Ananda Ambrose
“Danielle and I are not just photographers and filmmakers,” says David Coplan Schneider, one half of Dideo Films Photography. “We’re storytellers.” When David Coplan Schneider and Danielle Schneider, the husband and wife team behind Dideo Films Photography, set out to capture the story of a wedding, they begin as many storytellers do: with the characters. “We ask couples about their interests, what they like to do together. We get a really good idea of their taste and style as well as their taste in music, movies, and fashion, and we keep that in mind when we’re photographing and filming them,” says David. The duo creates stories that are inspired by couples in love, a topic they can relate to personally. Danielle, a pianist and artist, and David, a former Hollywood filmmaker, are memorable characters in their own right, and play out their love story in a series of rom-com short films they share on their website. In their spoof First Date, David makes a splash of a first impression when he trips over himself, sending his glasses flying. Like a character in a silent film, Danielle is left speechless . . . for the entire film. Nodding and smiling, she joins David in a blossoming romance. David and Danielle are a creative couple who laugh at themselves and delight in their own love story. They share their enthusiasm with their brides- and grooms-to-be and produce something “similar to a season finale of a great series that will last forever. We don’t view them as much as weddings but more as love stories that culminate in one day,” says David. After revealing the unique personality of each wedding couple, the storytellers focus on creating unforgettable scenes. From sweeping shots of Manhattan’s Metropolitan Club to intimate beach moments wrapped in sunlight, a mastery of craft is clear. “Weddings allow us to capture a whole gamut of emotions, scenes, and classic images all wrapped into one epic event,” says David.
The award-winning duo draws inspiration from fine art photography and classic cinema greats. “We love Herb Ritz, Mario Testino, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibowitz, Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, Orson Welles, Gus Van Sant, Maya Deren, and so many others,” says David. In fact, an eye for great photography runs in David’s family. His grandfather and mentor, Maxwell Frederic Coplan, was an accomplished celebrity and circus photographer, shooting notables like Bob Dylan, Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, and Arthur Miller. “My grandfather gave me a strong foundation in photography and showed me how to find those magical moments,” says David. Their team of freelance cinematographers and photographers also have backgrounds in feature filmmaking, fashion photography, and video editing. David says, “We’re all about timeless, classic imagery that never goes out of style. We don’t get sucked in by the latest photo filter or fad. Everything is shot in a combination of fine art, photojournalism, portrait photography, and film.” Even the most stoic would be moved to tears after watching Dideo Films’ body of love stories. As a team, they strike a balance of experience and intuition for being in the right place at the right time and then pulling it off. Although, they admit there is still part of the equation that cannot be planned for. “That chemistry is a real thing and each couple brings different ingredients to a relationship that all mixes together to create a unique bond of love and friendship,” says David. In the future, David and Danielle look forward to pushing the boundaries of wedding movie magic. “We’ll be expanding on the romantic dreamscape photography we’ve done. There’s also more Trash the Dress and Horseback photo shoots coming up. We’d love to get a bride on a skateboard or surfboard,” says David. dideofilmsphotography.com Social Life

Lawrence Scott Events produced and supported the Feinstein Institute summer concert featuring One Republic, which took place on July 14, and for which he donated the décor and services. This was the 11th year that Larry has produced the event’s dinner and concert, which was held at Old Westbury Gardens. Another charity close to Larry’s heart is
the Southampton Hospital. He will produce its annual summer gala on August 6. Then two weeks later, on August 20, he will produce and donate décor and services to the Michael Bolton Charities for a private dinner, concert, and fundraiser. This is the second year that the charity will have a Hamptons event that Larry is producing. Larry was also brought in to add the wow factor to the Global Lyme Alliance’s first NYC gala in October 2015. The sold-out event honored Yolanda Foster, Ally Hilfiger, and Thalia, and featured David Foster and various artists. Larry donated décor and produced the evening, which he will do again this October. Leesa Rowland Animal Ashram By Carlos Lacayo
Being Vegan Leesa Rowland has just wrapped up filming the pilot for A Perfect World, a reality show dedicated to saving the lives of animals. The pilot features Rowland along with Shawni Alexander, Patrick McMullan and his son, Liam McMullan. The show supports Rowland’s Animal Ashram, a nonprofit organization that rescues homeless animals from kill shelters in New York City. Leesa is a vegan whose passion is animal advocacy. “There’s plenty to eat without eating animals and plenty to wear without wearing animals. It’s the compassionate choice,” says Rowland.
“The Scream Queen” With an acting career that spans over two decades, Leesa has come a long way since her days growing up on her family’s Texas cattle ranch. Leesa says she knew from a young age that she wanted to be an actress. After earning her degree in broadcast journalism at Texas Tech, she headed to Los Angeles to study at the Stella Adler Studio. She got her first break playing Victoria in Troma Entertainment’s Class of Nuke ’Em High, (Parts 2 and 3). Her tour de force performances set the tone for her career. Leesa has played leading roles in a long list of cult horror films, leading critics to dub her “The Scream Queen.” She co-starred in director Travis Campbell’s Slaughter Daughter, where she plays an eccentric mother who drives her daughter to insanity. The thriller premiered at the seventh annual Freak Show Horror Film Festival in Orlando this past October and took home the award for Best Feature Film. She’s also appeared in Troma’s Return to Nuke ’Em High, set to premiere on STARZ later this year, and in Toxic Tutu. In September The Lion’s Den, a dark comedy starring Nicola Fiore, Julia Morrison, and Rowland will be released across the country.
LaLa Land Rowland is also an executive producer of LaLa Land, a documentary about the art in movies and TV, with Georgiana Nestor. This project with No Logik Films has been eight years
in the making. On top of all of this, Rowland and her friend Lisa Gaye co-host a YouTube series called Two City Girls, where they chat about everything from the best vegan recipes to tips for living a green lifestyle.
Last Chance for Animals Since 1989 Rowland has served as the New York liaison for Last Chance for Animals, an organization dedicated to education, investigation, and legislation that will eliminate animal abuse. Rowland will host a charity event at her home in the Hamptons in August for Animal Ashram. “My inspiration was The N.Y.C. Animal Care & Control kill list that I receive every morning. I want America to be a no-kill nation one day,” says Rowland, who has helped find homes for over 200 animals. “I know that I can’t save all of the animals, but I will do my best to save as many as I can, one at a time,” promises this committed animal advocate and actress. animalashram.com Social Life

Psychic Sundays with Jeffrey Wands By Christine Montanti
I
t’s almost nine in the evening and every green light is flashing on the board of the Walk 97.5 FM radio station. The phone lines have been blowing up nonstop for hours from nationwide callers eagerly waiting to speak to tonight’s incredible host. The energy in the contemporary building is exhilarating. Lyrics sung by the musical artist Pink play throughout the studio as the Sunday night Mets game previews on a large flat screen TV against the wall. I am seated in front of the controls of the newly renovated studio, watching the producer make final preparations for the live broadcast. Standing next to me, in front of a large microphone, is world-renowned psychic medium Jeffrey Wands, a man so extraordinary, with a supernatural talent so profound, its boundaries seem limitless. Every Sunday evening Jeffrey hosts his own radio show, Psychic Sundays, on Walk 97.5 FM. Jeffrey, known for his unique ability to communicate with the dead, has become one of the nation’s most sought-after and acclaimed psychics. He has made numerous appearances on TV shows, such as The Today Show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Maury, and A&E’s Mediums: We See Dead People. Jeffrey has authored several bestselling books, including The Psychic in You, Another Door Opens, and Dream Interpretations. In addition to hosting the weekly radio show, Jeffrey also hosts seminars across the nation, and his international directory of clients will wait up to a year to meet with him. Inside the adult contemporary radio station there is a table full of catered Italian-styled food neatly spread out on a table directly across from where Jeffrey is standing. While the producer is screening calls, Jeffrey turns toward me and graciously asks if I would like to have something to eat. Completely focused on tonight’s
radio show, I politely decline. Determined to understand how Jeffrey receives his psychic knowledge, I begin to observe him. I watch as he takes out a notebook and pen from his briefcase. He writes down the names of the first three callers on hold. He glances at the Mets game, scrolls through his cell phone, and then directs the producer to take the first caller, a woman named Pat. “Hi, Jeffrey,” Pat says enthusiastically. Before Pat has an opportunity to reveal anything, Jeffrey blurts out,” Hi, Pat, your mom has passed. Is that correct?” “Yes,” Pat responds. Jeffrey begins to speak rapidly as he adds, “She had respiratory and breathing issues before she passed?” “Yes!” Pat says, sounding amazed. Jeffrey continues, “She is standing with two ladies. One would be grandma, and there is also an aunt figure that is coming through with her.” “That is correct,” Pat says. Jeffrey is looking straight ahead at the controls on the board as he continues. “What would February represent?” “We have a birthday in February,” Pat says. “Mom is acknowledging the birthday. She wants you to know that she did find her peace. She says you have her role now: you have become her.” “Yes, I understand that,” Pat replies. “What is going on with your husband’s right shoulder?” Jeffrey asks. “He is having shoulder pain. Is it going to get better? Will he be able to return back to work?” Pat asks. “It will get better and I see him back at work,” Jeffrey responds. “Your mom has her hands up like you have to be patient. I know things have been difficult but things are going to start working themselves out.” “I have a question regarding my daughter. Do you see her getting married anytime soon?” Pat asks inquisitively. “Not in the immediate future but in the next two years, and you will be very happy with the guy,” Jeffrey says. “Is it the guy she is with now?” Pat asks. “Yes, it absolutely is. I just hope you like twins because she is going to have twins,” says Jeffrey. Pat hesitates for a moment seemingly amazed and then she responds, “Well that’s perfect because I am a twin.” And just like that, without Pat giving Jeffrey any information, Jeffrey was able to communicate with Pat’s mother who passed Social Life

away and provide her information on her husband’s health and daughter’s future. The entire time Jeffrey was on the phone with Pat I was studying him. I could not figure out how he was receiving this information. The knowledge appeared to be received telepathically and instantaneously by him. I question Jeffrey on how he obtains this psychic information. “Once I hear the caller’s voice the deceased family members will start popping in,” Jeffrey tells me. I ask him if it is similar to a visual projection. “It’s more like a moving image, like watching a movie,” he explains. Jeffrey directs the producer to take the next caller, a man named Joseph. “Jeffrey’s here. He is ready to take your call,” the producer tells Joseph. “Hey, Joe,” Jeffrey says. “Hey, Jeffrey, I was wondering if you could tell me some things about my father?” Joseph asks. Jeffrey interrupts Joseph while he is speaking. “Who is the other Joseph that has passed?” “Joe Bear?” Joseph asks. “Yes,” Jeffrey answers. “He is my cousin,” Joseph replies. “He popped in first,” Jeffrey says. Joseph begins to laugh hysterically. “He says he is with the old man. Not that I should say that your dad is old,” Jeffrey explains. Joseph continues to laugh. “Your dad didn’t feel like he had closure because of how quickly he passed. He is standing in front of me so this would be dad’s way of letting me know that he found his peace. Because of how suddenly his passing was in the end, he never got a chance to put things in order. Now what would the union connection be? Who worked for the union?” “My uncle Mario,” Joseph responds. “I have the whole entourage here,” Jeffrey says. “I bet you do!” Joseph replies. “He is also standing with his mom,” Jeffrey adds. “Really?” Joseph asks surprised. “My grandmother Rose?” “Yes. Rose is here, and there is a Mary or Marie that is also coming through.” “Wow!” Joseph says. “They also want me to tell you that the dog is here, so the dog is with them too.” “No!” Joseph says in disbelief. Joseph begins to cry loudly.
“Yes. Just so you know,” Jeffrey says. “My puppy is with him?” Joe asks. “Yes, he is right by your dad’s side,” Jeffrey responds. “Thank you,” Joseph says as he continues to sob. “Your father is very proud of you. You need to take your best step forward, forget the past and start concentrating on the present.” Jeffrey explains. “Focus on yourself and your future. Your dad says this is the most important four to six months.” “Yes, that’s right,” Joe says. “Don’t mess it up! I don’t think you will. Your dad is reminding me to tell you that you don’t have any room for any kind of mess up,” Jeffrey says. “I just hope he’s proud,” Joe says. “Joe, what did I say to you? Have confidence in yourself. Your dad is teasing and says you’re mom’s favorite,” Jeffrey says. “You knowing about my dog gives me validation about everything you’ve told me,” Joe says. “Thanks for spending Sunday nights with us.” Jeffrey responds. The abundance of information that Jeffrey gave to Joe was so powerful and insightful that Joe was overcome with emotion during their telephone conversation. Toward the end of the discussion, Joe’s voice revealed a sense of relief and he became very optimistic about the future. It was obvious that this call with Jeffrey comforted Joe and brought him a level of peace. Jeffrey went on to take approximately 30 more calls and, surprisingly, half of the callers were male. With each and every caller, Jeffrey was able to provide detailed messages from loved ones who passed away. He also gave callers accurate information about events that were currently happening in their lives, and offered them psychic information about their future. Jeffrey’s energy was extremely soothing when he was speaking to callers. He was compassionate in his delivery of the knowledge that he gave to each individual. Having had the privilege to accompany Jeffrey during his live radio broadcast, I can genuinely say that Jeffrey is an individual of a higher power, godlike, a truly gifted and brilliant man with paranormal abilities. THE YuLIn LYCHEE And dog mEAT FESTIvAL RETuRnS By toM FisCher Every June, in the muggy subtropical heat of southern China, tables are set and grills fired up in anticipation of a festive meal. Markets flourish with clanging cages, shouting vendors tout their wares to passersby, and fragrant dishes simmer over hotplates as half-dressed men sip baijiu, toasting to each other’s health before they dig into fistfuls of ripe lychee nuts and hearty bowls of dog meat stew. To many of the residents of Yulin, a city of some 6.9 million in the far southern province of Guangxi, dogs are a special source of food. The consumption of canine flesh is thought to bring good fortune and health — and to preserve warmth in the winter months, but warmth is rarely an issue in a city that averages 70 degrees Fahrenheit for the year. However, the festival has drawn great ire from Western social media in recent years, particularly because of stories about family dogs being stolen and slaughtered and the inhumane treatment the dogs receive, which includes being roasted or boiled alive, kept in cramped cages, starved, electrocuted, and other torments. So while the tradition of dog meat in cuisine may go back thousands of years, the birth of this festival in the midst of China’s accelerating rise to modernity ruffled many feathers, both at home and abroad. Of course, that is not to say that Western reactions have been united condemnations, either. Some say criticism of the festival is hypocritical coming from nations that slaughter millions of animals every year, most of them after tortured lives in factory farms. This is a position also put forth by many prominent Chinese media outlets, such as Hu Xijin’s biting editorial in the Global Times (under the pen name Shan Renping), in which he extends the mockery to other areas of Western animal abuse and dietary insensitivity, namely bullfighting and the widespread consumption of cows and pigs in the West in defiance of Hindu or Islamic laws. Why, he argues, must the Chinese diet change for Western sensibilities, when the West shows no other culture the same courtesy? The urban population of China has surpassed the rural population for the first time in its long history; the populations of these cities, particularly cosmopolitan cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen, have been heavily exposed to Western culture and business, thus leading to a large growth in dog ownership in the expanding middle class. This rise of the dog from just another food source or work animal to a furry friend has fueled much of the fire. Chinese social media raged for years about the continuation of these dog meat festivals, which occur throughout the south of the country. Weibo, an analogue to Twitter, was a major platform of this criticism. One popular Weibo post from the actress Yang Mi, as noted by Time, shared a now famous anti-festival poster that summarizes
this cultural shift in the Chinese perception of dogs. A golden dog sheds a single crimson tear, and looks to the sky: “Please don’t eat us; we’re your friends,” the bold black print pleads. The issue runs deep, which leaves many of us asking, “Well, what can we do?” China has no law against animal cruelty. Moreover, while the government has shut down dog meat festivals in the past, the Yulin municipal government does not even acknowledge the existence of the “Lychee and Dog Meat Festival,” let alone condemn it. Here is one potential solution: listen to the voices of reason on both sides. We should continue to condemn the cruelty of the Yulin dog slaughter, but also the cruelty of factory farms and other animal abuse closer to home. Our farming system is plainly cruel to animals, and companion animals like dogs and cats suffer widely in America as well: some are forced to fight, locked in cages for their entire lives, or left to wither in back alleys. Let us keep our attention on Yulin and other animal abuse incidents happening around the world, but also on those happening in our backyard. In that spirit, below are some worthy charities to consider donating to in order to better the lot of dogs at home: • The asPca, which is a vocal opponent of so-called “puppy mills,” which produce dogs for quick profit that are generally in poor health as a result of bad breeding and poor conditions early in life; • north shore animal Rescue league and Dogs on Death Row, no-kill shelters that focus on adoption and rehabilitation of injured animals; • Various charities that focus on training service dogs to help the needy, including the canine companions for independence, which trains service dogs for the physically handicapped and the search Dog foundation, which trains search dogs for disaster response teams; • the Physicians committee for Responsible medicine, which works to oppose the use of dogs in highly invasive surgery demonstrations that generally kill the animal; • the Greyhound foundation, which works to rescue racing greyhounds; • the canine Health foundation, which works for cures to various canine ailments.

Xiomi Frans-Cuber America’s Next Top Model & Beauty Expert By Carlos Lacayo
Don’t Ever Say Never Xiomi Frans-Cuber is on a relentless mission to empower women to be their best selves. She says, “I come from a modeling background and every single thing that I have done pertaining to my career has been based on judgment. Everywhere I go, I’m being judged; every time I walk into an agency, I’m being judged or measured or weighed. I am okay with it because I’m resilient, but I think on a much lesser scale women are being judged every day on their outward appearance. I know that there are women out there who are more sensitive than I, or who may not be in the best mental state in life because they don’t feel good about themselves.” Xiomi’s new website, Don’t Ever Say Never (donteversaynever.com), will assist with her mission. The website is based around her giving advice to women about different things. It incorporates both her clinical and beauty expertise so you get the health tips and resources as well as beauty tips. She says, “I have the qualifications. For me, it is important to be authentic because there are some others who claim to be health and beauty experts, but don’t really have the credentials. I’d like to be a resource for those women who wouldn’t go online and search for evidence based on research articles, or have the time to read books on health, nutrition, beauty, and wellness.”
Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner You probably recognize Xiomi Frans-Cuber as one of the finalists on America’s Next Top Model (ANTM). The TV personality has now become a health, beauty, and wellness expert. She began her modeling career with Metropolitan Model Management and made it to the semi-finals of the Ford Supermodel of the World Competition. After her stint on ANTM, Xiomi signed with New York’s Boss Model Management and has modeled for everyone from Carmen Marc Valvo to Terani Couture, and a plethora of national fashion magazines. Xiomi, pronounced “Zee ohm mee,” chose to put a pause on her successful modeling career to focus on school. Xiomi has a BS in nursing, which she earned after she graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson Unversity with a degree in communications and broadcast journalism. The New Jersey native, who has worked as a dermatology nurse, is currently pursuing her master’s degree to become a nurse practitioner, and she also works alongside her husband, Dr. Shain Cuber,

I have my own patients now but it’ll be a bit different because I’ll have a little more authority with what I do,” she says. Xiomi has a clear game plan when it comes to helping women feel good about themselves, including plans to start her own skin-care line. “The only opinion that matters is your own and not anyone else’s,” says Xiomi. or both men and women, thinning hair is a bitter pill to swallow. The good news is hair replacement has been revolutionized by a procedure called NeoGraft, and the leader in the practice is the Greenberg Cosmetic Center in Woodbury. NeoGraft is a relatively new, minimally invasive hair restoration option that transplants your own hair from thicker areas of your scalp to thinner, balding areas. The NeoGraft method is unique among traditional methods because it swiftly and painlessly harvests individual hairs using the follicular-unit extraction (FUE) technique; it’s the first and only FDA-approved FUE implantation system and features the only “no touch” technology on the market. “NeoGraft is exceptionally hot right now, because it is so easy, is non-scarring, has minimal discomfort, and requires practically no downtime,” says Dr. Greenberg. “The procedure has completely revolutionized hair replacement!” Dr. Greenberg further explains that both men and women are visiting the practice to ask about hair replacement options, and are seeing amazing results. “What’s so great about NeoGraft is it gives more possibilities to both men and women,” explains Dr. Greenberg. “Many patients are surprised to learn this procedure can even be used on their eyebrows! It’s a cutting-edge technology for a common concern.” According to Dr. Greenberg, most patients can go back to work or are back on the beach within 48 hours. Dr. Greenberg states, “What we know for sure is that this is no snake oil. It’s the real deal.”
