PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Welcome to our New York winter issue. As we are best known for our Hamptons issues in the summer, please note we publish two issues in the city for our loyal readers. In the future, we will continue to publish these issues every fall and winter in addition to our six summer issues between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The winter season in Manhattan is exciting. Seasonal lighting, holiday parties, and new offerings from this great city’s cultural institutions. The city has so much to offer this time of year that it can be quite difficult keeping up with it. From charity events to the opera, theater, and museums to fabulous shopping and great dining, the options to fill our weekends are endless. I highly recommend participating in this city’s vibrant opportunities. This means less social media and more social life. Detach from the digital world and seek out new friendships and adventure in NYC. You will be pleasantly surprised by the results. Now that December is here, you have only short time to enjoy the remaining weeks of 2019. Have a great Holiday!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

Devorah Rose, Nomi Ellenson Photography

UNKNOWN

It’s that magical time of the year in the city. There is a feeling of wonder and excitement. New York pulses with possibilities and the feeling fills everyone with an energy that electrifies. Shopping for loved ones is one of the most exhilarating luxuries. What a blessing to be able to give. There are so many who wish they could gift and feast with their families but cannot. At this time of the year, giving to others can be so rewarding. Starting a food and gift drive in your building or contacting charities is thankfully very accessible in the city. Volunteering with friends and family is something fun and rewarding you can do and create a meaningful experience for all involved. It truly ’tis the season.

LETTER FROM THE SENIOR EDITOR

There’s something spectacular that happens in NYC during the winter holiday season. The cold weather along with the holiday spirit sends an electrifying energy to the already bustling neighborhood streets, and when the end of the year is upon us, the world’s greatest city magically transforms itself into a winter wonderland filled with holiday lights, decorations and festive attractions. My personal and most treasured memories have been spent enjoying NYC’s holiday inspired activities. There are endless ways to relish in this enchanting season: admiring Central Park’s stunning winter beauty from its winding paths, viewing the much anticipated tree-lighting ceremony, and ice skating at the historic Rockefeller Center rink. The Big Apple experience is sure to be joyfully stimulating whether you are uptown or downtown and the holiday attractions are limitless. With seasonal shows such as The Christmas Spectacular featuring the Radio City Rockettes or New York City Ballet’s, The Nutcracker, you will be delightfully entertained. For holiday sightseeing you can check out the fabulous Festival of Lights on Randall’s Island or simply window shop along 5th Avenue to catch a glimpse of the many creative and memorable window displays. Holiday gifts can be purchased at various Christmas stores including the incredible Columbus Circle and Union Square Holiday Markets, and after a fun filled day of events why not grab a bite to eat at one of the city’s many fine restaurants decked out for the holidays? From The NoMad, which is known for its remarkable Norway Spruce Christmas tree to The Tavern on the Green located in the heart of Central Park, an incomparable dining experience awaits you; their magnificent holiday decorations create a beautiful and festive dining ambiance. Whatever activities or entertainment you decide to enjoy this holiday season, the magical island of Manhattan offers an extraordinary and unforgettable experience! Warm wishes,

Christine Montanti

NIGORA TABAYER TABAYER By Sloane Pierson

Candice Swanepoel wearing the TABAYER Genuine Pendant at Venice Film Festival on August 28th.

Vanessa Hudgens paired a unique TABAYER bracelet, priced at $300,000, with her Carolina Herrera dress at UNICEF Gala on August 9th.

In September, Nigora Tabayer debuted her Third Eye Series at Paris Fashion Week. Above, influencer Leonie Hanne wears the TABAYER Loyalty pendant as she arrives at the event.

I

n a twist of fate, Nigora Tabayer’s namesake line, TABAYER, was born. In 2016, she shared a sketch of a custom initial pendant with the diamond house of Graff, hoping they could bring her personalized design to life. Graff not only produced the pendant, but was so impressed that they encouraged her to return with designs for the remaining 25 letters of the English alphabet. Three years later, in March 2019, Nigora launched her debut Eye Collection during Paris Fashion Week. The Eye Collection, custommade with 18k white gold, VS+ diamonds, and an emerald, has quickly become a style staple — on and off the red carpet — for itgirls, including Vanessa Hudgens, Elsa Hosk, Candice Swanepoel, Bella Hadid, Caroline Vreeland, Shanina Shaik, and many more. This holiday season, the designer presents her “The Third Eye Series” to complement the popular pendants. The line features an array of earrings and rings, adorned with the brand’s iconic pairing of VS+ diamonds and emeralds; each piece is a playful take on the protective eye, TABAYER’s signature emblem. Raised internationally between Europe and the United States by artistic parents, Nigora creates through a global and progressive lens. Through her designs, she hopes to encourage positive introspection and elicit themes of energy, movement, and freedom. TABAYER.COM | @TABAYERJEWELRY Pricing begins at $30,000 and can go upwards of $100,000; all pieces are custom made to order and individual pricing is available upon request. SocialLifeMagazine.com

ABOUT TABAYER Debuted in Paris in 2019, the house of TABAYER goes beyond making beautiful jewelry; the label was founded to represent personal and individual values. In every design, there are multiple layers of meaning, exploring the complexity, charisma, and creativity of the wearer. Each bespoke piece — 18k white gold, VS+ diamonds, and emeralds as centerpieces — is inspired by the protective eye; the amulets fuse ancient lore and contemporary finery across elegant silhouettes with sweeping lines and striking gemstones. The founder and creative director, Nigora Tabayer, designs with heartfelt depth in mind — she aims to capture a spirit of diverse womanhood and imbue each stone with protection and strength.

The pure luxury of the yarn and the way it drapes and feels on the body. Your pieces are so sumptuous and soft! How do you source the materials? We work with only the finest yarn mills in Italy and Scotland and have them create our own custom twists and colors. The custom twists mean that all our pieces can be machine washed and dried. Empowering women is at the heart of your company mission. Can you tell us how you find local women knitters? It happens organically as each knitter reaches out to family and friends in her community who are gifted knitters. All of our knitters have come to us through word of mouth. Is there one particular piece that truly reflects the Hania New York style? Any of the larger pieces — the bigger the better. I don’t see the larger sweaters as covering up . . . whoever you are will shine through. We absolutely love how you custom make each piece depending on the buyer’s preferences. How quickly can you deliver an ordered piece? Usually it will take a few days for an accessory, two weeks for a sweater, and three to four weeks for a major statement coat. SocialLifeMagazine.com

What are your thoughts on cashmere in the summer? Cashmere is a natural fiber and so it breathes, especially when mixed with some silk and cotton in lightweight open-weave stitch styles. We make styles that can be fabulous cover-ups or something to wear in the Anya Cole evening at the beach or on a yacht when the ocean breezes can get quite chilly. What is your personal favorite piece? The large Mara sweater — either solid or color-blocked. If Hania had a mantra, what would it be? As my mother used to tell me growing up in Poland, ‘If you need it, you make it.’ Hania New York hanianewyork.com

LIVE AND HEAL HEALTH AND LIFE COACHING By L. A. Dawson

O

n the seventh anniversary of my having neurological paralysis from Lyme disease and suffering a devastating treadmill injury, I wondered if I would ever work again. Although many problems had been solved, some complications and symptoms persisted. I exceeded milestones I had set for myself, but as an author, sitting was my daily necessity. Yet sitting was a painful reminder of all that had happened and the things I couldn’t do anymore. Thankfully, I now have tools to make sure muscles are firing and it’s now possible for me to sit for hours while I write. Focusing on what I had accomplished, and not what was still ahead of me, I decided to give back and help others on their own journeys to better health. In April 2019, I enrolled in a health- and life-coaching school. My launching of Live and Heal Health and Life Coaching is a natural progression of writing health and wellness articles and finishing the final leg of my own healing journey. My niches include Lyme disease, weight loss, digestion, PTSD, and trauma. Personally, I used holistic modalities to regain my strength and offer this in my coaching practice as well. I teach holistic modalities to clients and also speak at events of like-minded health-conscious people. One of the most important concepts is learning to re-frame our lives with positive thoughts and words. Claiming your illness or weakness or problem attracts negative energy to an already compromised body. Using grounding and visualization are wonderful tools for meeting life’s challenges calmly. Putting our feet on the ground (grass or sand) can realign our body’s energy in a positive way. Visualizing our healing in a positive light changes the landscape of how we feel and how fast we heal. I offer cleanses and guide my clients in their renewed gut health. The focus is on anti-inflammatory protocols with discussion about the effect of lectins in our diet and food sensitivities. I also share healing recipes and give help with food prep and shopping. Reading labels is imperative so that we can count chemicals not calories. Certain chemicals have a negative effect on our bodies. I also do ninety-day coaching programs and six-month programs for total transformation. All programs meet the client where they

THE PARLOR NYC CURATING MEETS CONVENIENCE AT THE PARLOR NYC, A NEW HEALTH & BEAUTY COLLABORATIVE By Ashley Leighton

B

usy work weeks, long hours, stressful commuting, and other pressing obligations leave little time for self-care and services for the on-the-go New Yorker. Trying to find the perfect salon, spa, or wellness center, let alone fitting in a muchneeded appointment with a topnotch pro, can be an overwhelming task. But that will soon change thanks to the upcoming The Parlor NYC, an innovative new beauty and wellness suite that is slated to open February 2020. The brainchild of serial entrepreneur Pam Wolf, The Parlor NYC is a collective that was created to allow urban professionals to integrate and enjoy luxury beauty and well-being services under one roof. “As a mother and busy entrepreneur, scheduling and finding time for my beauty and wellness appointments was challenging,” explained Wolf, who came up with the concept in 2018 to disrupt the industry. “I found myself traveling all over town for appointments with my favorite hair stylist, manicurist, acupuncturist, and nutritionist, who were located in various NYC neighborhoods. Trying to fit it all in and make it work just ate up my time and added stress to my day. I wanted to change the way we book our appointments, making it streamlined and simple without compromising on quality and services.” To be conveniently located at 33rd Street and Madison Avenue, the 12,000-square-foot wellness and beauty hub will eliminate the need to travel and it will offer access to an array of A-list professionals, treatments, and services at any time of day Pam Wolf or night. The result promises

a streamlined, stress free experience. “I wanted to disrupt the industry and change the way we book our salon and wellness services. The Parlor NYC allows clients to maximize their salon experience without wasting time,” said Wolf, who is constantly on the go, jumping between business and family. “The original inspiration for The Parlor NYC was personal. I needed to somehow bring all of my beauticians and wellness professionals into one convenient location,” she said. “I quickly realized that this was not just a benefit for me as a client, but would also create a collaborative learning community for the professionals I was visiting. The Parlor NYC is the solution; marrying convenience and curated talent with high-end hospitality and community. The Parlor NYC will offer a comprehensive mix of premium services in a luxurious, professional environment. “We will offer an extensive array of amenities for the best in class practitioners and their clientele,” added Wolf. “The simplicity and convenience make the collective the business model of the future!” Boasting an A-list roster of professionals, The Parlor NYC will feature the best of the best in traditional and alternative beauty, health, and wellness services, treatments, and options. SHARON GRASSO TAKING SKIN CARE TO A NEW LEVEL By Christine Montanti

W

hen it comes to permanent makeup, there are many micropigmentation artists from whom to choose, but only one expert stands out from the rest: Sharon Grasso — owner and founder of Permanent Touch Cosmetics. With an aesthetics career spanning over two decades, Sharon is one of the most influential and skilled licensed aestheticians and dually licensed medical micropigmentaion artists in the tri-state area. In fact, Sharon is so highly regarded and sought after in her industry, she has become the go to beauty aesthetician and permanent makeup artist to the celebrities. As a NY State licensed, permanent makeup instructor, Sharon uses her proficiency and perfected technique to provide various services which include permanent makeup for eyebrows, lips, and eyelids, lash enhancements, and scar correction. Due to the incredible results clients receive from Sharon’s services, she is continuously featured in magazines and exclusive beauty websites. Most recently, Sharon was featured in People Magazine alongside American television personality Danielle Staub, cast member of Bravo’s Real Housewives of New Jersey. In the article, People Magazine highlighted the amazing results that Staub received from Permanent Touch Cosmetic’s services. Aside from Staub, Sharon is currently working with a roster of television personalities who star in various hit TV shows on Bravo, MTV and VH1 networks, including television stars Dorinda Medley of Real Housewives of New York City and Renee Graziano of Mob Wives. “We are starting to see a trend of procedures including natural lash enhancement, eye liner, nanobladed brows, Sciton’s BBL and Skin Tyte which enable indivduals to wear a lot less makeup,” Sharon reveals “It’s the red-carpet-ready procedure because there is no down time and many of these treatments can be done the same day of the actual event. Immediately after receiving these treatments the skin instantly yields a beautiful glow and an unbelievable tightness.” Sharon’s celebrity clients’ love the results of her services so much they are boasting about Permanent Touch Cosmetic’s on social media and are even posting selfies without makeup to show off their improved look post treatment.

The technique that Sharon perfected for Permanent Touch Cosmetics is much more effective and lasts longer than a manual microblading tool. The trend of Microblading, which is continually evolving is leaning towards a method Sharon Grasso has been using for years. For brow lovers who are unaware, a softer and more natural-looking brow is in! This brow look can be achieved using a digital nanoblade to deposit color into the skin, as opposed to using a microblade which limits the control technicians have when depositing pigment into the reticular layer of dermis, ultimately resulting in inconsistent color and color retention. “This supports the technique that I have been using for years,” Sharon Grasso points out. “There is a gross misconception in our industry that using a digital machine creates a thicker heavier tattooed looking brow. That couldn’t be further from the truth! Using a digital nanoblade creates super fine, natural-looking hair strokes; this gives the exact same hair stroke appearance as a microblade but with more color consistency and better color retention. Manufacturers have created needles that go directly into a digital machine, a bladelike needle, similar in appearance to a microblade,” Sharon explains. “A mircroblade gives you less control on how much pigment you deposit and is contraindicated for so many.” There are various reasons why microblading doesn’t work well for certain individuals; for people with oily skin, thyroid conditions or who have had previous permanent makeup — the pigment may not be long lasting. Therefore, there are many reasons why microblades aren’t the tool of choice, whereas digital nanoblades work well for all individuals who are candidates for permanent makeup. To contact Sharon Grasso, her exclusive aesthetic services are available in the offices of cosmetic plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, in Woodbury, New York City and Southampon locations. 917.734.7378. Permanent Touch Cosmetics permanenttouchcosmetics.com Social Life

ANGELO DAVID WHY YOU HAVE THIN HAIR & WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT By Ann Grenier

P

eruse through Instagram long enough and you are sure to observe your feed graced with pictures of women sporting long, outrageously thick or highly-pigmented hair. Hair has always been a significant element of style and self-expression, but the outrageous, over-the-top looks have become more mainstream than ever thanks to the growing supply of faux hair, hair color technology, and celebrities setting trends that throw convention or achievability out the window. The result? More women — and men — feel that their natural hair isn’t growing as long or as thick as they’d like it to, and are turning to places like Angelo David Salon to get answers and find solutions. Over the last few years, Angelo David Pisacreta, the owner and creative director of Angelo David Salon, has seen a steady increase in young women coming in for consultations to discuss their thinning hair. Despite the trend for thick luscious locks, the reality is, thinning hair and hair loss is a growing concern for good reason. Forty percent of women have visible hair loss by the time they reach age 40, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Two-thirds of men will begin to see hair loss by age 35, according to the American Hair Loss Association, and after 50, 85% of men and 50% of women will experience some form of pattern hair loss. So, what’s causing this trend to rise, and what can we do about it? This is where Angelo comes in. Hair loss and thinning hair has been his specialty for over 25 years, as he grew up around hair his whole life. His father, Carmine, was a pioneer in men’s hair styling, and taught Angelo how to make toupees and wigs.

When Angelo opened his salon, which now lives on Madison Avenue, he created a space for women and men to come in and speak candidly about their hair issues in a private consultation room, and he could make a custom wig or hair piece to exactly match a client’s natural hair. Angelo and his team can create fully customized wigs, couture hair extensions, hairpieces, toppers, clip-in extensions, ponytails, fillers, or even bangs. I WISH I’D LOOKED INTO REGENERATIVE MEDICINE FIRST! By Stephen Roman, M.D. Founder, RegeneSpine, Regenerative Spine & Joint Institute

“When I met Dr. Roman, I’d been having pain on the outside part of my hip for years that worsened despite steroid injections. I told him that I was diagnosed with bursitis. He examined my hip with an ultrasound and told me that I didn’t have bursitis. Instead, it was a case of gluteal tendinitis and steroids wouldn’t help. He then performed a procedure using my own cells and my pain is now gone.” words of a patient

egenerative medicine is a new field that has brought us revolutionary treatments for orthopedic and spine problems that were previously treated with steroids and surgery. STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY can be one of your best chances to regain your health, mobility and freedom. Throughout your body there are many cells with innate healing capacity. These include mesenchymal stem cells which are located throughout the body especially in your bone marrow and fat. issues. I have been pioneering new treatment methodologies to enable patients to use their own cells to help with their spine and joint challenges. We offer FDA-compliant regenerative therapy for issues such as: spine pain, joint pain, back pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, hip pain, and much more. When a patient has a painful joint, many doctors still recommend steroid injections. A question I am often asked is, “What are the advantages of getting a regenerative or cellular joint Stephen Roman, M.D. treatment, instead of an oldfashioned steroid injection?” I’d like to invite you to a special webinar that I’ve put together to answer this question. I prepared this webinar so you can understand the risks of steroid injections and to prompt you to do your own research on regenerative approaches. DR . KAVEH ALIZADEH PIONEERING BREAST ENHANCEMENT By Jacob Puck

K

aveh Alizadeh, M.D., the chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Westchester Medical Center and associate professor of surgery at New York Medical College, is a prominent leader in the field of plastic surgery. The unique and effective procedures that he has developed for women seeking breast enhancement are regarded as some of the most successful and enduring in the field, garnering many awards. Seeking new options that have longer-term results with less scarring, women are turning to Dr. Alizadeh for procedures such as his pioneering and trademarked breast-lift techniques. One is NaturaBra, which provides unique internal support. Another is NaturaGlow, which transfers a woman’s own fat to shape and support her breasts. Do you have statistics about the increase in breast surgery? The latest update that I have from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that, in 2018, 300,000 breast augmentations and 109,000 breast-lift procedures were performed, which is more than double what was reported in 2000. This is partly due to advancements in technology and less-invasive techniques with quicker recovery. Can you explain your proprietary NaturaBra procedure and why it is revolutionary? Traditional methods simply lift everything up and suture the skin. But breast skin lacks integrity, and it will eventually fall. The NaturaBra technique uses a woman’s own tissue to create a second layer of support, which becomes an “internal bra” that supports the breasts, especially important when implants are involved. We have also combined this procedure with a woman’s own fat to avoid the use of implants altogether. What are the benefits? Longer-term support and minimal scarring. How is its effectiveness? This is what’s really exciting. We have shown that our results hold up over time: in a 10-year follow-up of over 500 of our patients, more than 80% reported maintaining the results. What other procedures would you count as cutting edge? Until recently, the only option for scarring around implants was to replace them with new implants. Now, with our NaturaGlow procedure, I can remove implants and achieve the shape a woman wants with her own soft tissue creating soft curves and contours.

What are the advantages? Women need not worry about potential complications from silicone implants, such as leaking or scarring, or be concerned with having foreign objects in their body, and the recovery is much simpler. Plus, we often perform a Robin Hood effect: take fat from the areas that have plenty to give (thighs, buttocks, and flanks) and donate it where it’s needed most. Kaveh Alizadeh, M.D., F.A.C.S. WHITMORE from Richard Ferrucci to Greg Williams By Patrick Shannon

Fortunate, blessed, and lucky. Yes, that is what I am. Why? To a large degree, because of two individuals who have contributed to my personal and my company’s success. Two of the most influential and impressive people I’ve ever met. At 24 years old, leaning into the insurance world, I was mentored and inspired by Richard Ferrucci, then president of Frank B. Hall Insurance of Long Island. How did that happen? That was the lucky part. When I met Richard, he was a combination of John Forsythe, Joe DiMaggio, and JFK. He was (and still is) the best salesman I’ve ever known, and I’ve known many. I was immediately impressed because he was handsome, laser-focused, charismatic, had a great command of the English language, and dressed impeccably. Today, he is a nationally recognized leader in the surety and construction industry with Alliant Insurance, and a member of the Ace Mentor Program for Architecture, Construction, and Engineering. Reluctantly, I left his company in 1986 to join Frank DeMartino and Kevin Hahn at Essential Coverage in Suffolk County. Three years later, with the help of insurance superstar Mary

Jeanne Egleston, my EVP and COO, I founded the Whitmore Group, Ltd. I don’t think I can ever sufficiently thank Richard for what he gave me. Perhaps this can be a token toward my debt of gratitude. For your example, and guidance, thank you, Richard. Person number two is Greg Williams. We met less than two years ago. Not since working with Richard have I ever been so encouraged and motivated. Beginning in 2005, Greg and his team at Acrisure have built an enterprise approaching $2 billion in revenue, delivering a full spectrum of specialty insurance and risk management solutions. Greg brought Wall Street to the insurance industry and created a unique financial model. This Acrisure model has created wealth and opportunity for thousands. I salute Greg Williams for the financial genius he is. The Whitmore/Acrisure connection is a natural because it leverages the ability to provide both national reach and local presence with entrepreneurial instincts and spirit. On the following pages, I trust you’ll enjoy getting a look at some of the folks who make Whitmore work, and a perspective of how we got here. James C. Metzger Chairman / CEO The Whitmore Agency

FOUNDERS SPOTLIGHT

Without Mary Jeanne Egleston steering the operations during the early Whitmore years, we may not have made it to today. Her skill and acumen maneuvered the company through all of the things that can take a young company down. In 1996, When Mary Jeanne passed the baton to Laura Biviano, I was blessed again with a great woman who helped lead me through a transition onwards and upwards. Two women whom I admire and respect, and I will always appreciate for the impact they had on my career. Social Life

THE HEARTBEAT OF NEW YORK’S HOSPITALITY What does it take to be a great chef/owner at one of New York City’s fine dining restaurants? Is it an art? A science? Yes, and yes. Talking with graduates and instructors from culinary institutes about qualities of great chefs, one of the traits that tops the conversation is creativity. JEAN SHAFIROFF NEW YORK’S FIRST LADY OF PHILANTHROPY AND STYLE ICON By Bennett Marcus Photography By Michael Paniccia

Through her innate generosity and concern for humanity, Jean Shafiroff found her life’s calling: philanthropy. For years she has been a powerful leader, putting her boundless energy behind worthy charitable organizations both local and international, and today is at the pinnacle of New York’s philanthropic circles. “I feel very lucky to be able to do the charity work that I do,” she says. “I think that it’s a great blessing to be in the position that I’m in. I’m very fortunate that I can help others.” Jean sits on the boards of multiple foundations, chairs numerous events, and donates to many causes with which she is not directly involved. “When it comes to giving, Jean Shafiroff leads the pack,” says Elsie McCabe Thompson, the president of the New York City Mission Society, an organization with which Shafiroff has long been actively involved. A humanitarian and author hailed as New York’s “First Lady of Philanthropy” by both Hello and Hola! magazines and several other publications, Jean is a fixture at charity galas in both Manhattan and the Hamptons, where she has homes. A fashion lover known for her iconic sense of style, she often appears on best-dressed lists. Last year Look Online named her to its international best-dressed list; others on that list included Anna Wintour and Meghan Markle. “I was in good company!” Jean says with a laugh. Jean earned an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University, and worked in both public finance and private partnerships on Wall Street, and her business acumen is

in high demand among charitable organizations. She also holds a BS in physical therapy from Columbia University. This summer, she chaired galas for the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation and the Ellen Hermanson Foundation. In August, Jean and her husband, Martin, were the honorees at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s 61st annual Summer Party, which she has chaired three times in past years. Jean has been instrumental in raising large sums of money for the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “Healthcare is very important, and supporting the local hospital is probably the most important thing to do in the Hamptons. It would be difficult to live in a community without a good hospital,” she says. Equally important for her is the fact that the hospital serves the entire community. “That fact is key. Just like any other community, we have people who are not wealthy. They need to have service, and I love that the hospital never turns anyone away. It’s a hospital for everyone.” Jean recently joined the board of the Southampton Hospital Association, her eighth board appointment. She serves on a wide variety of charity boards, including the New York City Mission Society, the French Heritage Society, The Jewish Board, and the Couture Council of the Museum at F.I.T. A prolific host, she entertains frequently in her homes. Recently she was listed by The Salonniere as one of 2019’s top 100 American party givers. Every weekend throughout the summer, her Southampton house is filled with guests. “A summer home Social Life

is to be shared and enjoyed by loved ones and friends.” She also holds events at her homes for the causes she is passionate about. Among her soirées this year were ones for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, the New York City Mission Society, and Surgeons of Hope. “I like people. I’m a people person,” she says, and she is happy to host party guests if they’re making the effort to learn about a charity. There is little rest for this dynamo, and in early fall she chaired galas for the New York Women’s Foundation, Surgeons of Hope, and the Dominican Women’s Development Center, and co-chaired the French Heritage Society Gala. Also in November, Jean hosted a cocktail party at the Laverdin Gallery on Park Avenue for Global Strays. Just before Thanksgiving, Jean hosted and underwrote the New York Mission Society’s community Thanksgiving dinner for 400 underserved people, in Harlem. Jean is a hard worker and states, “The philanthropy I do is definitely year-round.” At the Surgeons of Hope Gala, the actor Diego Luna and businessman Maurice Lévy of Publicis Groupe were honored. The organization’s mission of providing free heart surgery to children in developing countries is especially intriguing to Jean. “They do wonderful work, and save so many lives,” she says, adding that she visited their facility in Nicaragua when she was in that country in 2016. “The children never would have received their life-saving surgery if these top heart surgeons hadn’t traveled to the country.” Jean emphasized Surgeons of Hope in our discussion because she has become interested in global philanthropy. “I have traveled to many countries, including Cambodia, Nicaragua, Colombia, and China. In these and other countries I have seen enormous poverty and hardship. It is hard to view this and do nothing,” she explains. She has long supported organizations that provide assistance worldwide, including the Cherie Blair Foundation, which creates economic opportunities for women. “The Cherie Blair Foundation helps women around the world to get jobs, in places like India and elsewhere, and it’s growing rapidly. I’m very impressed.” Last December Jean traveled to London to support Walking with the Wounded, a charity that helps UK military veterans, and of which Prince Harry is a patron. “It was very exciting to meet Prince Harry. I think the royal family are great role models, and they do so much for people in the United Kingdom and internationally, and they really use that platform to do good.” Jean’s two daughters have followed in their mom’s footsteps. Her youngest daughter, an animal rights advocate and philanthropist, formed the charity Global Strays, which helps animal rescue groups in developing nations. “It’s a wonderful charity that is absolutely making a difference,” says Jean, who is on the board. Her older daughter serves on the board of the newly formed charity A Place to Bead Me. SocialLifeMagazine.com

In her book Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give, Jean shares advice for anyone who wants to become involved in philanthropy regardless of financial status. “I believe we can all be philanthropists. Those who have very few financial resources can give time and knowledge.” Those who do have resources, Jean feels, have an obligation to help the underserved. “To do nothing is to waste a lifetime.” Another book is in the works. “Writing a book requires a great deal of research, time to formulate ideas, and then time to write. It is not a simple process to write; however, I am glad that I wrote my first book.” The press plays an important role in spreading news about philanthropy and the people involved in it, Jean believes. “I think it encourages other people,” she notes. She has gotten involved with certain causes by reading about them, including, years ago, about the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Now, she has embraced social media as a way to get her message out, particularly Instagram, where she has over 415,000 followers. “I think that it’s a wonderful platform to promote philanthropy and also to encourage people.” About a year ago, she got serious about it and hired a consultant to help her manage her online presence. She also uses the platform to promote her interest in fashion, which helps to make her posts fun and eye-catching. “I am on the Couture Council board and try to help promote the work of our designers, particularly some younger, lesser-known designers. You will often see Jean wearing Oscar de la Renta, Zac Posen, Carolina Herrera, Victor dE Souza, Malan Breton, and B Michael, among others. Jean collects high fashion ball gowns that she hopes to donate to a museum — someday, as she still very much enjoys the experience of wearing these creations. She is currently in the process of archiving her gown collection with a company called Clio Archivists, the brainchild of two fashion industry insiders, one from Vogue and one who teaches fashion history at F.I.T. What drives her? “I live a good life and have been fortunate to have resources available to me. I believe we are not put on this earth to work with the intention of only giving to ourselves. When we share our resources, we come closer to understanding the meaning of life. With this in mind I remain committed and motivated to move forward with my work in philanthropy.” Follow Jean on Instagram @JeanShafiroff Facebook @JeanShafiroff Twitter @JeanShafiroff

Maria Elena Paganini, a descendant of the famed Italian violinist Niccolo Paganini, hosted a special VIP and media preview party for “Paganini Honors Paganini” at the Ascent Lounge in the Time Warner Center. Musicians and participants of the “Paganini Honors Paganini” Carnegie Hall concert were present and gave guests a taste of what they can expect to hear. This was the first stage of a tour that anticipates visiting cities on different continents in the year 2020 under the name “Paganini Honors Paganini.”

The philanthropist and attorney Thomas J. Henry launched the new art and music experience Austin Elevates, in Austin, Texas. The two-day event benefited local nonprofit organizations SAFE Alliance, Superhero Kids, and St. David’s Foundation Community Fund. Austin Elevates kicked off with a special unveiling of a mural by the contemporary street artist Alec Monopoly, followed by an exclusive invitation-only afterparty with a special performance by G-Eazy. NEST SEEKERS INTERNATIONAL’S MIKE FULFREE FROM MODEL TO POWER BROKER By Blaire Bass “It’s all about building relationships and maintaining these relationships at the highest level. I measure my success by the level of customer satisfaction and service I deliver in each and every transaction,” says Mike Fulfree, dubbed “Mr. Southampton” on the real estate circuit Out East. A Nest Seekers sales star, Mike believes that selling someone a home in the Hamptons is helping them invest in their future. Whether it’s for a first-time home buyer, someone looking for that perfect vacation home on the beach, or simply for investment, it can all be found right here in the Hamptons. The clientele in the Hamptons is so diverse,” says Mike of his clients and customers. “I have worked with people from all over the world. Many of whom call a piece of the Hamptons home. It’s a challenge, but this is one of the best real estate markets in the world. It’s so gratifying when I am able to bring a buyer and seller together.” Prior to launching his Hamptons real estate sales career, Mike enjoyed a hugely successful international career modeling for Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Diesel Jeans, Frankie Morello, and Alexander McQueen. He was named Model of the Year in 2008 and worked with the likes of the photographer Bruce Weber for Vogue, the iconic beauty Brooke Shields, and the Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel. He attended Fashion Week around the world and lived in Italy from 2009 to 2012. While visiting the Hamptons with his family, he fell in love with the culture, the spectacular beaches (especially off Dune Road) and the adventurous nature of the outdoor lifestyle one can enjoy Out East. “Deep-sea fishing on the ocean after heading out of Star Island Marina in Montauk over the summer is one of my passions. Taking time with family and friends is most important. There’s nothing better!” A connection to the community drives Mike’s charitable efforts. He is associated with the Wounded Warrior 32-mile race; he cycled the TD 5 Borough race raising funds and awareness for the Lupus Foundation of America; and he’s raised money for the Make a Wish Foundation. Mike’s tireless work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit drive him to search for listings daily for his buyers, renters, and sellers. Making those connections successful for both sides of the deal is what Mike says, “makes all the effort worthwhile.” Nest Seekers International Michael Fulfree Licensed Real Estate Salesperson 20 Main Street, Southampton michaelfulfree@nestseekers.com o/ 631.287.9260 | c/ 631.560.4030 SocialLifeMagazine.com

HAMPTONS TOP POWER BROKERS: CORCORAN’S GARY DePERSIA By Blaire Bass

F

rom Southampton to Montauk and from Sagaponack to Shelter Island, Gary DePersia has participated in nearly $3 billion of real estate transactions since 1995. With hundreds of his exclusive listings sold and closed, as well as matching hundreds of his own buyers and renters with the right properties, Gary’s nearly 25 years in Hamptons luxury real estate has generated benchmark sales. You may have heard people refer to him in real estate circles as the “go-to man.” A year-on-year member of The Corcoran Group President’s Council, he qualified as a national standout in 2008 when he was ranked as the nation’s 4th top broker. And just this spring, the Real Deal recognized him as the 3rd ranked broker in the Hamptons with $83M+ in residential sales of $10M+ properties. Gary realized early on the importance of deep local knowledge and the benefits of expert marketing, which other brokers have come to emulate. Knowing each buyer or renter has a personal idea of what defines the best Hamptons experience, Gary is well versed on the inventory of each village and hamlet on the East End.

JOE EISNER SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE INSPIRED BY NATURE By Rolise Rachel

“Architecture is more of a process than a product. A dynamic space continues to respond and react, to evolve and adapt with its occupants.” JOE EISNER

J

oe Eisner, an award-winning architect, Harvard and Brown University graduate, and a resident of Manhattan and East Hampton, founded Eisner Design in 1991. Eisner focuses on the evolution of space and how it changes with the fluidity of modern life. In addition to his belief that design must reflect and adapt to the continually changing conditions of contemporary living, he also believes design must be a vehicle to connect us to the larger surroundings, especially natural surroundings. Eisner’s home sits in Northwest Woods in East Hampton. He connects with the outdoors on miles of bike trails that wind through the several hundred acres of white pine forest. The forest sits within 5,000 acres of mixed woodland and rolling hills. Here Eisner can focus on the subtle changes that unfold by nature’s design, noticing that even changes here create a large impact. Eisner has become a major advocate for sustainability, and he believes that through careful research, progressive modernist thinking, and a minimalist sensibility, sustainable solutions can be attained for any project. Eisner is a member of the American Institute of Architects and has won numerous design awards as well as having had his projects featured in numerous books and publications, such as HC&G, New York Observer, Architectural Record, the New York Times, Remodeling & Makeovers, and Green Living By Design. He has lectured at FIT, The Junior League of New York, and The Princeton Club Green Forum.

GREEN MISSION STATEMENT Environmental responsibility is central to our work at Eisner Design. In addition to creating more environmentally sensitive architecture, we are committed to helping promote the flow of green information to the larger community. We believe that as the public becomes more aware of the increasing availability of green building options, they will grow more receptive to living and building sustainably. In fact, when they learn what we have been learning, we believe they will insist on it. Nature’s beauty is an infinite design resource — an endless combination of textures, geometries, patterns, and possibilities. At Eisner Design, we specialize in environmentally-driven modern design and sustainable solutions to deliver fresh, elegant spaces that inspire more harmonious living. My design is influenced by the larger environment and bringing the outside in. Cherishing and spending time in nature is a main inspiration of my work. EVENTS LIKE NO OTHER WITH 4PM EVENTS WANT TO WOW YOUR GUESTS? MEET TATIANA By Cecilia Bloom

I

t’s 4PM. Do you know where your event planner is? If it’s Tatiana Byron Marx, then she is wherever you are anywhere over the globe, making sure your event is like no other. Tatiana’s roster of clients includes some of the biggest blockbuster names. Known as the “arbiter of great style and entrepreneurial prowess,” Tatiana takes Lionel Richie and Tatiana Byron Marx event planning to the highest level in creativity and quality, with a major splash of “wow” factor. Social Life sat down with Tatiana to discover her secrets to success. What was your big break into the world of celebrity events? I was hired to do a series of events for Roc-A-Fella Records at the Cannes Film Festival. For two weeks, I produced multiple events for Damon Dash and Jay-Z that were co-hosted by celebrities like Penelope Cruz and Leonardo DiCaprio. Those high-profile parties introduced me and 4PM Events to some of the biggest names in the industry and helped legitimize my fledgling brand. What would you say was the most out-of-the-box event you’ve planned? The most incredible event was a dinner party at Versailles. We transported our guests back to the 17th century at the height of Louis XIV’s extravagance, influence, and power. If you’re going to

go big, Versailles is your place! Guests arrived by horse and carriage and were greeted at the entrance of the palace by acrobats, fire eaters, and a slew of circus performers. After cocktails in Versailles’ remarkable gardens, we escorted our guests into the Hall of Mirrors, where we had designed and built a 220-foot long rectangular table. If you stood at the head of the table, it looked endless! We hired actors and musicians to wear period costumes and created parties within a party throughout the course of the evening, which ended with breathtaking fireworks . . . and a ton of clean-up. What is the most interesting wedding fantasy you’ve made come alive? A few years ago, we worked with clients who did a three-day buyout of Amanyara Resort in Turks & Caicos. The bride envisioned being married atop the pool overlooking the ocean. We designed and built a translucent structure over the infinity pool to support the canopy and act as an aisle for the bride, groom, and officiant. Framed by the sunset’s reflection on the ocean, the bride and groom looked like they were gliding on water as they walked to the altar. When the guests went inside for cocktails, we transitioned the space into a DJ booth and dance floor. Can you share your number one tip or tool for party planning? Lighting, lighting, and lighting. People underestimate its huge effect on the overall look and feel of a party. 4PM Events 4PMevents.com Social Life

ON ‘LOCATION’ WITH LESSING’S HOSPITALITY GROUP By Jacob Puck

R

egardless of whom you ask, the most important forward-thinking aspect of any good event — and especially a wedding — is the location. “Of course, no detail is trivial when you are planning an event to have maximum impact,” says Jennifer Cantin, Lessing’s Hospitality Group’s director of marketing and development. “However, the first and last impression — and everything in between — will be informed by the environment you choose.” Cantin should know. Lessing’s is a sixth-generation, family-owned company that now boasts 120 locations from Montauk to Manhattan, up to Westchester, and down to Florida; wedding and catering venues; 10 full-service restaurants; over 80 corporate and academic dining centers; nine Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza franchises; and a historic inn. “The only thing we don’t have at this point is a barn,” jokes Cantin, with the caveat that she is sure that one is on the horizon. With so many options to choose from, Social Life Magazine challenged Cantin to name her top five favorite fête locales.

1. Whitby Castle, Rye Set on 126 acres, Whitby Castle is conveniently located, yet seemingly worlds away. Perfectly manicured lawns, breathtaking views of the Long Island Sound, a grand ballroom, and two private reception rooms offer the perfect backdrop for any size affair. “There are a lot of brides who really want to have the perfect princess wedding, and this is the perfect locale,” says Cantin. “Just pulling up to a castle, regardless of the event, is a wow moment.”

2. Bourne Mansion, Oakdale This historic turn-of-the-century Vanderbilt mansion offers a traditional and classic setting for the grandest black-tie affairs, from lawn events hosting over 1,000 guests to weddings and corporate affairs hosting 300 guests. Bourne Mansion personifies luxury and grandeur and the elaborate celebrations of yesteryear. “The Bourne Mansion epitomizes the Gilded Age with décor inspired by its founder, Consuelo Vanderbilt,” says Cantin. “It’s also conveniently located, only 90 minutes from New York City — so close yet worlds away.”

3. The Vineyards at Aquebogue, Aquebogue Nestled on the North Fork, The Vineyards at Aquebogue is a captivating setting at any time of year, and for any occasion. “People are discovering the North Fork, and this has become one of the most sought-after venues on all of Long Island,” says

Bourne Mansion

Pelican Club

Cantin. “There is absolutely nothing like hosting an event at a working vineyard, and this one has been completely renovated, while still retaining every bit of rustic charm. It’s true magic.”

4. Pelican Club, Jupiter, Florida Lessing’s newest property, the Pelican Club, takes center stage at its stunning waterfront location. Guests are instantly immersed in the warmth and charm of this classic Floridian venue that features spectacular dockside vistas. “Overlooking the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, there isn’t a prettier property that I’ve seen in Florida,” says Cantin. “Its Bahamian accents are unmistakable, so this huge, event-driven location is unrivaled.”

5. Heritage Club at Bethpage The Heritage Club stands as one of the most celebrated event venues in New York State. Elegance and opulence imbue the incredible ballroom, while award-winning cuisine and remarkable service are the gold standards for this historic and famous Long Island destination. “It’s really hard to beat this location,” says Cantin, adding that the recent PGA Championship really put the property on the map. “Regardless of the event, the Heritage Club is the epitome of wow.” Lessing’s Hospitality Group lessings.com Social Life

FOUR SEASONS O‘AHU AT KO OLINA By Anthony Michael

W

henever a couple decides to get married, one of their first decisions is where the wedding and reception will take place. The second is where to go on their honeymoon. A destination wedding can narrow decisions to one. Hawaii has long been a luxury destination for discerning couples. Thanks to its fabulous weather, incredible beauty, abundance of private and glamorous locations, and a lack of red tape (this is our 50th state). Hawaii has it all. Hawaii has eight main islands, but Oahu offers the most variety of activities and exclusive lodging. From traditional luaus on the beach to daytrips awash in color, you won’t want for anything when choosing Oahu, the most famed island of all. Whether you’re planning a destination wedding or seeking the perfect getaway after a wedding back home, the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina is a perfect choice. A personal sanctuary with chic, light-filled interiors and breathtaking views, the property is renowned for its luxury rooms, five sumptuous restaurants, and

exclusive meeting spaces, including a lovely on-site wedding chapel to exchange vows. Perched on Oahu’s rugged western coast, the spectacular beachfront resort offers vast ocean views of turquoise waters, private white sand beaches, lively pools and lagoons, and a golf course that weaves around waterfalls at Ko Olina Golf Club. Consider a Specialty Suite, a choice that includes an assortment of luxury perks and services. A dedicated concierge will help you create an incredible island escape, arrange for in-suite dining (compliments of the resort), and favor you with exclusive personalized service. This option can take frustrating planning and decision-making out of the equation. In the early evening, make your way to the adult pool, perfect for taking in the famously colorful sunsets on the leeward coast of the island. You can also request a private barbecue dinner overlooking the ocean. From Champagne to fireworks, practically no request is off limits. Social Life

Nights are special at the resort. The property recently unveiled an immersive Spa Under the Stars experience offered at the resort’s world-class Naupaka Spa & Wellness Centre. Spa Under the Stars begins with a warm aloha greeting from a personal spa attendant, followed by any combination of whirlpool, steam room, sauna, and the resort’s fifth floor rooftop lap pool. Once fully relaxed, the journey continues as guests are escorted to one of the resort’s oceanfront spa suites, which is transformed into an intimate candle-lit sanctuary. Surrounded by the swaying palms, warm trade winds, and the sound of waves lapping against the sand, couples enjoy side-by-side lomi lomi massages for a truly transcendent experience. Following treatments, guests are treated with Champagne and joined on the resort’s Ocean Lawn by Greg McCartney, a NASA ambassador and professional astronomer who guides guests through the beauty and mystery of the stars in the Polynesian night sky. Our advice? As incredible as the Four Seasons Ko Olina may be, this is Hawaii! Get out and experience it. Nearby is Kualoa Ranch, SocialLifeMagazine.com

the filming location for movies, including Jurassic Park and Godzilla, and home to an array of activities for people of all adventure levels. Go horseback riding along scenic pathways that overlook Mokoli‘i Island. Hike, mountain bike, or drive an ATV through jungle terrain. Or let loose on a ziplining tour, which begins at the top of Ka‘a‘awa Valley. Or, take to the skies. For the ultimate Oahu sightseeing experience, opt for a helicopter tour that flies past the island’s many must-see attractions, including Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and Kaneohe Bay, with a tour of the Kualoa Ranch on the north shore. Paradise Helicopters can customize your trip to enjoy every moment in the air. Pro tip: The Four Seasons Ko Olina offers brides “something borrowed,” a Ni‘ihau shell heirloom lei. It’s a 12-strand, 50-inch lei of white Laiki Ke‘oke‘o shells, which are equal in value to an exquisite diamond. This lei, which can be rented, duplicates what was worn by Hawaiian ali‘i, or royalty, on their wedding day. Ni‘ihau shells are the world’s most prized shells, found solely on the private Hawaiian Island of Ni‘ihau, which is also the only island in the world where the Hawaiian language is solely spoken. Yes, think Academy Awards and Harry Winston. But, then again, the entire trip is designed to make you feel like royalty. O‘AHU AT KO OLINA fourseasons.com/oahu

JEFFREY WANDS PROVIDES CLUES FOR MISSING PERSONS CASES By Christine Montanti

J

effrey Wands, the internationally acclaimed psychic medium, is not only recognized for his paranormal ability to communicate with the dead, but also valued for his work with law enforcement agencies to help solve high profile murder cases and unsolved mysteries. Every year, Wands uses his supernatural talent to help countless people receive valuable messages from loved ones who have passed on. His unusual gift provides a profound sense of peace and long-awaited closure to individuals who are mourning the departed and longing for answers. For two decades Wands has made numerous appearances on TV shows, such as The Today Show, Extreme Makeover, Home Edition, the Maury show, and A&E’s Mediums: We See Dead People. He has authored several best-selling books including Knock and the Door Opens, The Psychic in You, and Dream Interpretations. In addition to hosting seminars and charity events across the nation, Wands hosts his own radio show, Psychic Sundays on Walk 97.5 FM as well as a podcast with co-host and disc jockey, Orlando, of The Shark 94.3 FM radio station. For the past 15 years, Wands has been repeatedly asked to appear on the Maury show to help provide clues to families and law enforcement agencies for missing person cases. Every year, there are over 600,000 people reporting missing in the United States and irrespective if it is a child or an adult, a missing person is anyone whose whereabouts are unknown for any reason regardless of the circumstance. This October, Wands was asked if he would return to the Maury show and assist a Connecticut family whose 29 year old son Michael McClain mysteriously disappeared in April. Michael moved from Connecticut to New Hampshire to attend college and work with autistic children when he suddenly vanished one evening after going to a bar with friends. Michael’s mother and father were desperate for answers as to what happened to their son. Without any prior knowledge of Michael’s disappearance, Wands traveled to New Hampshire to find out if he could shed some light on the case. Incredibly, on the way to New Hampshire, Jeffrey was inundated with information about

Michael and led the crew of the Maury show along the path he believed that Michael had taken the night he vanished. Wands explicitly described what happened the evening of Michael’s disappearance and was able to provide new information on the case including the location of Michael’s body and the manner in which he died. As a result of Wands traveling to New Hampshire, he ultimately provided Michael’s family and law enforcement with new clues regarding the mysterious case. Michael’s family was grateful for the information that Wands shared. This month the Maury Show contacted Wands again and asked him to come back on the show. It’s not surprising that Wands has garnered an extensive list of international clients including A-list celebrities and influential entrepreneurs who will wait up to a year to meet with him. WOOKEY SEARCH By Rolise Rachel

W

ookey Search, a cloud-based social search engine focused on positive human interaction, brings a new standard to in-search technology. Wookey Search leverages human capital to radically inform the public with knowledge by uniquely positioning its users in today’s explorative environment. The new search engine concept was created by Mark Gustavson and his team in San Francisco. In July, 2019 Jon Fried arrived in San Francisco from Miami Beach to pitch Google launch with a new legal app, but, serendipitously, he reconnected with Gustavson, a colleague from 10 years earlier. Together, they brought the concept of Wookey Search to the next step. Wookey Search is positioned to take advantage of a fragmented market with an opportunity to disrupt current search technology. Wookey Search’s user interface leverages technology for the coming revolution in augmented reality (AR). A sophisticated person desires and has been conditioned to seek a socially interactive and explorative platform with a desired interaction. Unfortunately, today’s search experience seems symptomatic of a great deficiency in our daily lives, taking what should be fulfilling and instead yielding a flat, one-dimensional bombardment of lackluster knowledge immersion. The daunting prospect of political agendas and marketing results leave one in a state of cognitive dissonance. Clearly, all arrows point to the new frontier of knowledge immersion. Wookey Search will serve as the bridge between people of various backgrounds or generations: grandparents, parents, and young people, giving all generations a guided approach to relevant and insightful information from the internet, sharing information regardless of language, platform, or medium unfolding into new paradigms in technology. Wookey Search is uniquely positioned to address the interactive desires for knowledge seekers in today’s thrill-seeking environment. ABOUT THE TEAM Mark Gustavson led and closed dozens of transactions with cumulative valuations in excess of $280MM in industrytransforming technology companies. Beginning as a private bank global investment manager at Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) in Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, his focus included early-stage technology companies and domestic investors. These concentrations led to institutionally backed and international businesses, yielding unrivaled domain experience that resulted in

industry-transforming technology companies. Gustavson’s sector specialties include biotechnology, fiber optics, IP based banking, mobile payment systems, IP payment technologies, social media, and search-acquiring experience on “both sides of the street.” Jon Fried had developed forms, questionnaires, and processes for Bank of America, Wamu acquired by Chase, and other banks to assess the feasibility of loan modifications in 2009, personally affecting $250 million in the beta group. From 2013 to 2016, he developed software under the name of Homeland Immigration Services for the automation of translation of all government forms, which he sold to co-founder Xoogler as an expansion of Google Translate, which then helped with the Haitian migrant crisis of 2015. PATENT-PENDING PLATFORM DELIVERING THE SEVEN WONDERS OF WOOKEY SEARCH:

1 2 3

Mobile-friendly platform — content in tile form with a heat map superimposed for peer relevancy. Hyper-organized searches — backed by experts/ thought leaders who continually advance search features.

Human-centric — users control their own data, rather than having a machine extract only the data it thinks the user needs.

4 5

Customization — individually-created user interfaces that design a dashboard interface for all things search.

Visual navigation — intuitive features that make it virtually powerful with a strong stickiness factor: the content you care about in a way that is entertaining.

6 7

Massive bandwidth — clean, bundled searches that are truly personalized with speedy delivery. Modernity — knowledge-sharing in a way that revolutionizes how people come together online.

Wookey Search is a paradigm shift for searching the internet, and a natural selection for the future of search technologies. wookey.com Social Life

SILVERSANDS GRENADA WHERE SILVER IS GOLD By Anthony Giampetruzzi Penthouse Suite Living and Dining Area

L

et’s face it: Few surprises are left in the Caribbean. Sure, there’s no shortage of beauty, and just how lucky are we to be in such close proximity to literally dozens of the best beaches in the world? But, don’t you sometimes yearn for something off the beaten path and somewhat undiscovered? That diamond these days is Grenada. If you’re a history or politics buff, you’ve heard of its complicated and bloody coup in the early 1980s, followed by a U.S. invasion that quickly restored democracy. Locals don’t dwell on that unfortunate episode anymore. In fact, their focus these days seems to be on something much more hospitable: island visitors. Dubbed “Spice Isle” because of its renown as one of the world’s most prolific suppliers of nutmeg, Grenada, one of the beguiling islands in the West Indies, is situated just 500 miles northeast of Venezuela. The heart of the island is its capital, St. George’s, where colorful homes, Georgian buildings, a world class medical school, and early-18th-century Fort George overlook the narrow Carenage Harbor. Unlike most of its Caribbean kin, this sovereign nation is on the larger side and wows with its varied topography. In a matter of minutes, you can travel from a pristine beach to a mountainous jungle awash with exotic flora and fauna.

Here’s a pro tip: When visiting, opt into a full day private tour. It will set you back a whopping — get this — $80. You’ll see monkeys, waterfalls, giant bugs, petroglyphs, and other fascinating attractions, making Grenada more of an adventure than your typical island getaway. Speaking of things that wow, Grenada upped the ante big time in 2018 with the opening of Silversands, arguably one of the most exquisite resorts in the region. Located on the iconic Grand Anse Beach, the luxury property is both close to the airport and any other amenity you require, and yet it’s a complete world away from it all. Silversands boasts the longest pool in the Caribbean. Okay, we won’t dwell on that accolade because, while it definitely is a grand centerpiece, it’s but one of many reasons to visit.

Here are our top three other reasons.

1

ROOMS AND SUITES. Download the Silversands app and you’re on your way to a frictionless experience that has been described as “rapturous.” We agree. Floor-to-ceiling windows let the natural beauty of the island flow into every room. Each bed, chair, and sofa is positioned for maximum views. Go all in on a penthouse suite for extreme comfort and the most spectacular sunset views over the Caribbean Sea. Social Life

2

DINING. I’ll come right out and say it: The Caribbean is generally cursed by its cuisine. Silversands has broken that spell with its multiple dining options for exceptional food. The grand Asiatique integrates Asian cooking methods with Grenadian spices: specific island-grown ingredients overlap with Asian flavors such as ginger, Thai basil, kaffir lime, cinnamon and cloves and local ingredients in an exotic and intimate atmosphere. The pool and beachside Grenadian Grill blends local fare with flavors from that other favorite sea, the Mediterranean. Don’t miss Puro, which takes the trendy cigar bar to a whole new level. This intimate cigar and rum lounge features a large collection of rare Caribbean rums and small batch rums from Costa Rica, Fiji, El Salvador and Japan. Rare cognacs are also on the menu, including Hennessy 8 cognac which is served at $8,000 per shot. SocialLifeMagazine.com

3

THE SPA. Again, like the resort itself, this oasis within an oasis is not to be outdone. In fact, you can even co-opt the spa’s own sizeable pool for more private relaxation. Don’t miss the treatments, though, which combine global massage techniques, ancient traditions, and the power of aromatherapy to rejuvenate the body and mind. The menu includes local ingredients like nutmeg oil for massages, creating a highly aromatic and deeply relaxing experience. Cool off and achieve bliss in the ice cave. Admit it. If you’re beguiled by the Caribbean, you endure the annual ritual of laboring over where to visit each year. Go out on a limb (and a little farther south than you’re used to) in 2020, and let your feet slip into Silversands.

CIP’S CLUB AT BELMOND HOTEL CIPRIANI VENICE By Anthony Giampetruzzi

W

hen it comes to Venice, what becomes a legend most? Believe it or not, there is a short list. The historic Piazza San Marco and the allurements that flank this iconic square. The Rialto Bridge, the epicenter of the City of Bridges. Exclusive shopping and, especially, the irresistible glass of Murano. And some of the most luxurious hotels in the world, many of which enjoy equal fame for their gastronomic options. Such is the case with Belmond Hotel Cipriani. One of its four restaurants is Cip’s Club, a demure eatery that has boasted a grand reputation for close to 21 years, not the least of which is its breathtaking view of the Venice skyline from its perch on the island of Giudecca. Dining or drinking alfresco here is the epitome of romance. So, let’s get something out of the way: Belmond Hotel Cipriani itself is a legend of massive dimension. It has long been considered one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, attracting affluent travelers of every designation. It was opened in 1958 by the eponymous Giuseppe Cipriani, who also founded Harry’s Bar in Venice and invented the Bellini cocktail. Which brings us back to Cip’s Club. While you could fight the crowds for a Bellini at the original Harry’s Bar, those in the know make their way (after making a well-in-advance reservation) to this hotspot across the canal where the Bellini is also considered

original . . . and just as fresh. The terrace views at Cip’s Club are exceptional. Helmed by the acclaimed chef Roberto Gatto, the menu offers traditional Venetian recipes that feature products fresh from the Rialto market and, notably, fresh seafood. On a recent visit, the fritoin di scampi, calamari e zucchine, salsa rafano leggero (fried scampi, calamari, and zucchini with a mild horseradish sauce) reminded that the word “fry” is indeed a good one. Delizioso! For something slightly more traditional, it’s impossible to beat the seppioline e mazzancolle arrostite con pane profumato alleerbe, verdure saltate (roasted cuttlefish and prawns with scented bread with herbs, and sautéed vegetables). Vegetarians delight in the fiori di zucca ripieni di verdure ed asiago con misticanza e composta di pomodori verdi (pumpkin flowers stuffed with vegetables and asiago with mixed herbs and stewed green tomato). Whatever your taste, Cip’s Club sates, and you’ll find yourself wanting more and more of the bites, the views and, of course, the libations. Belmond belmond.com Social Life

THE OITAVOS HOTEL LUXURY, SERENITY & A SPECTACULAR LANDSCAPE MAKE THIS PORTUGUESE SPOT A MUST-SEE By Blaire Bass

J

ust twenty miles west of Lisbon airport, the spectacular Oitavos Hotel is situated alongside the Sintra Mountains and Europe’s most westerly point, Cabo de Roca. This jewel of a hotel, with its prime location along the Estoril and Cascais Coast, is sure to whet the appetite of jet setters in search of nature and escape . . . and luxury, of course. And, it’s steps away from the coastal town of Cascais, which is speckled with lots of restaurants, cultural activities, and shops. For surfing virtuosos, nearby Guincho beach is sure to light your fire. GORGEOUS GUEST ROOMS The hotel is spacious — super high ceilings, oversized public areas, and walls of glass that capture the beautiful surroundings at every corner. The modernly designed guest rooms, lofts, and suites are also huge, all with sunny private balconies and ocean and golf views. Let me inspire you! BY ANDREA CORREALE If you are like my family, making Christmas cookies is a family affair. It’s a time for family bonding. Butter cookie recipes are a dime a dozen but this one is simple and delicious. Once your dough is made, refrigerated and ready to go, you and your family can make a night or weekend of it. I have the best memories of sitting around the table cutting out the dough with holiday shaped cookies cutters and then going to town decorating them. You can buy all types of cookie decorations— creating the simplest cookies topped with colored sugar before baking, to the most elaborate, using colored royal Icing, colorful sugars, and edible silver glitter. The key is to just have fun and get into the holiday season.

Butter Cookies

INGREDIENTS: 2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature 3/4 cup sugar 3 egg yolks 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt Colored sugars and/or royal Icing INSTRUCTIONS: In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the flat beater, beat together the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Add the egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla extract and mix well. In a sifter,

combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Sift the flour mixture directly onto the butter mixture. Reduce the speed to low and beat until well mixed. Divide into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball, then flatten the balls into disks. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Let it soften slightly at room temperature before continuing. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out a dough disk 1/4 inch thick. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes. Transfer the cutouts to the parchment-lined baking sheets. Put in the refrigerator for 20 minutes allowing the cookies to hold their shape better. Preheat to 350°F. Bake until the cookies are golden on the edges, about 8 minutes. Transfer the cookies to wire racks and let cool completely. Decorate the cookies as desired with colored sugars, decorating pens and/or royal icing. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. ANDREA CORREALE, ENTERTAINING EXPERT, FOUNDER & CEO OF ELEGANT AFFAIRS

FOOD & WINE

FROM MARTINIQUE TO BACCARAT HOLIDAYS 2019 By Sharon Roth

J

ust one New York minute ago, we were enjoying our sunset Labor Day cocktails waterside at Navy Beach. Now, wrapped in our (faux) furs and crimson scarves, we anticipate (dread) our first big snowfall, and look forward to a sparkling, unforgettable holiday season.

With warming winter holiday cocktails of course! Little on Earth is toastier than Caribbean rum. Try out this easy, chicly seasonal French Colonial recipe:

Old Fashioned de Martinique 1 tsp sugar 3–4 dashes bitters 2 oz Clement Select Barrel Rum Directions are beautifully simple: Mix. Grate nutmeg and cinnamon on top. Garnish with orange peel.

Old Fashioned de Martinique

And an English Colonial (calorie infused yet delectable) Clement Rum tangy twist on a classic:

Egg Nog Spice 12 eggs 32 oz heavy cream 32 oz whole milk 2½ cups sugar 1 bottle spiced rum 10 oz oloroso sherry (optional) 1 vanilla bean 2 tsp grated nutmeg Beat eggs (not by hand; use a beater) and gradually add sugar and scrapings of vanilla and grated nutmeg. Slowly add cream, milk, rum, and sherry. Serve in punch bowl with large block of ice and grate additional nutmeg on top. Drink until collapse. Leaving balmy rum (and Martinique) behind for Manhattanchic holiday-lavish decadence, head over to the Baccarat hotel bar — very aptly styled The Bar. An explosion of glitter and jewel tones, The Bar is where deep ruby opulence meets vivaciously Prohibition-era New York cachet. Guests from around the globe indulge and toast between crimson velvet and merlotcolored walls, leather seats on checkerboard floors, glittering red Baccarat chandeliers and old salon-style walls of fine art. Calm or abuzz with conversation, this 60-foot bar houses Baccarat’s collection of celebrated wine and craft cocktails, served in magnificent pieces of Baccarat crystal. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Egg Nog Spice

Toast the new decade in full-bodied wintery style, with the Baccarat Rouge and The Zodiac. Complex, buttery, yet delightfully spicy, the Baccarat Rouge is a rich medley of warm tones with surprising zing, perfect by a seasonal fire. (Or among a fashion-forward crowd of freezing yet irrepressibly fun-loving Manhattanites.) A hibiscus-infused ice cube lazes within tequila and Baccarat tea, with lively flavors of vanilla, almond, passion fruit, and allspice. Also recommended is The Bar’s Zodiac, a woodsy, Narnia-inspired thrill of apple Calvados brandy, walnut liqueur, and Benedictine. With these toasty concoctions, winter does not exist at The Bar. For our dessert drink, let’s head a bit uptown to the bar at Daniel, again turning over the decade in classic Manhattan 1930s club opulence. For the ultimate end-of-year cocktail bliss, order the S’more Envy, crafted of speculaas, Angel’s Envy Bourbon, Amaro Averna, cherry-cacao bitters, and smoke-fired roasted marshmallow. We have no words. Enjoy now; start fasting January 2. Happy — and safe — holiday season and New Year 2020 to all!!
