PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Nothing quite compares to a Hamptons summer. I would say the same goes for autumn. Come September, the Hamptons transforms into a different but equally vibrant version of itself. There are many fall activities the Hamptons has to offer — apple picking, playing a round at Montauk Downs, visiting vineyards, or riding your bike through the less traveled roads. Out here, with the natural surroundings and time spent at the ocean, everything seems a little more special. In November and December, the Hamptons is still a great place to spend time with family for the holidays. Even though I’m fond of New York, there is something about the Hamptons I love but can’t describe in mere words. I recommend trying to find out why spending time in the Hamptons may define your life.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Devorah Rose, Nomi Ellenson Photography

Labor Day is an invitation to sit back, exhale, and reassess. In a world deeply saturated with polarizing perspectives, remember the most important POV is your own. With so many narratives competing for center stage, how do we go about tuning them out and focusing on our own story? That’s a question I ask myself often. I think it’s important to invest in value that transcends cost — invest in you. Whether you are crunching numbers or crushing diaper duty, may your chosen path enrich you. Where hard work meets heart work, happiness and fulfillment will be found. This weekend is dedicated to celebrating the worker, but wouldn’t it be great to also celebrate the work? Devote yourself to work worth doing — and you will forever celebrate a life worth living. With love,

Devorah

LETTER FROM THE SENIOR EDITOR

It is hard to believe Labor Day weekend has arrived marking the end to the Hamptons summer season because it feels like just yesterday, we kicked off Memorial Day weekend. Everyday spent among family and friends in the Hamptons is truly a gift, and residents and visitors alike continue to relish the countless activities, the pristine ocean beaches, and the natural beauty of the East End’s landscape In this issue, we feature the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center, a non-profit organization that serves underprivileged African American and Latino children and families in Bridgehampton as well as surrounding communities on the East End. Needless to say, I was extremely impressed by the devotion of the Executive Director Bonnie Michelle Cannon and her commitment to helping her students achieve not only educational, but also personal success; she is truly an incredible woman. I invite everyone to read the Center’s inspiring story found on the pages of this Labor Day Issue; it is one which reveals a day-care-center and the powerful impact it has on its students. Fall will soon be upon us, and is one of the most beautiful, magical times of year on the East End. I am looking forward to connecting with you soon again! Warm wishes,

Christine Montanti

LA SOEUR A HAMPTONS GEM By Marsin Mogielski Photography By Annabel DeGroot

B

orn and raised in Houston, Olivia Reagan started her fashion journey in 2014 as a sales associate in an upscale boutique, where she became a successful buyer. That path led her towards creative design and entrepreneurship, landing her in the Hamptons with a fourth pop-up: La Soeur. Why did you decide to become a business owner? My father is an entrepreneur and so is my brother. I think some people just have it in them. It was something innate. I have always been ambitious and I remember thinking in school all the career paths felt small and capped my creativity. I have always wanted more. What services or products do you offer at La Soeur? With La Soeur’s platform, we really do cater to the brands and the community. We have a unique business model that truly benefits direct-to-consumer brands that have no brick and mortar presence and that don’t have any plans to open a store of their own. We provide online brands a platform to have a space of their own without the risk and hassle of an entire lease. We allow them to work with us on selecting their inventory and even host events in the space as if it were their own. We are very pro small brands trying to find a place in a big industry.

What demographic do you cater to? We have a true divide. We have so many women who come in with their daughters. We have a fun, contemporary aesthetic in the front of the store that flows into a tasteful luxury palette toward the back. I can’t tell you how many mom/daughter duos we cater to. How do you choose the fabulous pieces that you sell? Instagram. As funny as it may seem, we get in a rabbit hole searching for unique brands who focus on sustainability. Maegan Campbell has been a true diamond when it comes to finding these amazing brands. This is her first season with us and we have partnered together to create La Soeur Hamptons. She comes from a business development and wholesale background, whereas I come from a buying and entrepreneurship background — the combo has really made us soar.

Maegan Campbell, Olivia Reagan

From a boutiques’ standpoint to our clients — we offer designers they can’t find anywhere else in America, as we are pioneering many brands who have no US presence; and we offer it in a sustainable way. Sustainability is one of our key drivers when looking for new brands. Additionally, we scout out Local brands in the city we will be in next. We are a true divide between the two — a local presence for the community to support, and the gems no one has seen before. SocialLifeMagazine.com

What is your favorite thing about the Hamptons? The people. The weather. The scene. The restaurants. The nostalgic feeling it brings. My neighbors. The clients who have turned into friends. I mean where do I begin and where should I end? Everyone here in the Hamptons have been so kind and welcoming to us. I can’t give praise and gratitude enough. T

he Missing Link is like a candy shop for cuff links, vintage and new, high-end to easily affordable, classic to amusing. In this elegant and tidy little shop at the Showplace Antique Center, you can surely find what you need, or didn’t know you needed, among the 20,000 plus cufflinks on display. They range in price from $45 to $4,500, and average about $95. The higher priced cuff links are names like Cartier, Gucci, and Tiffany. The shop, owned by Michael Rodriguez, sells others items too. On display is original artwork by the German artist Peter Keil, whose work features brightly colored abstracted forms with some graffiti elements. Here you can also find jewelry by the high-end Danish company Monies. The bold pieces made from natural materials are a favorite of the fashion icon Iris

Apfel. The Missing Link also exclusively carries unique oneof-kind broaches designed by Vincent Simone, insect forms made of Bakelite and sterling silver. Simone’s sterling cuff links inlaid with reverse-carved and hand painted Essex crystals are also available, and they, too, are one of a kind. Summer Repair Transitioning our beauty routines from summer to fall — here’s what the experts have to say.

CHRISTINA CARLSSON AMIKA’S LEAD PRO EDUCATOR

“Summer is tough on hair — from sun exposure to extra ponytails and buns along with time in water and at the beach. Moving into fall weather calls for damage control: book a haircut, try a conditioning tonal glaze at the salon, and follow up with a treatment mask at home. My favorite hair reparative cocktail is mixing amika’s Soulfood Nourishing Mask (Sephora, $28) and Glass Action Universal Elixir (Sephora, $28) for added shine. For cool toned blondes, try the Bust Your Brass Intense Repair Mask (Sephora, $42) for added repair.” loveamika.com TAMAR VEZIRIAN FOUNDER OF GOTHAM GLOW

“During the summer months transitioning into fall a lot of clients come in with tan lines. An airbrush tan is a perfect way to even out the skin. Prepping the skin before a spray tan is the most important step in making sure the tan looks even and lasts as long as possible. The best way in my opinion to exfoliate is to soak yourself in a tub or, if you have a shower, steam the body for about 10 minutes. I recommend not using a salt scrub as those products tend to have oils in them. It will create a barrier between your skin and the spray tan will not adhere properly.” gothamglow.com SALLY HERSHBERGER HAIRSTYLIST & SALON OWNER

“It’s important to care for the hair after it has encountered summer stressors like the sun and harsh water as they can be damaging. You’ll want to detox the hair by using a cleansing shampoo to wash away impurities and any buildup. To add moisturize back into the hair, you’ll want to condition. I like to SocialLifeMagazine.com

use my 24K Liquid Assets Daily Conditioning Remedy because it instantly softens, smooths, and refreshes dull, dry, damaged hair. Plus, you can use this daily. Heading into fall you may also want to consider getting a trim to keep the hair healthy and to get rid of any dead ends.” sallyhershberger.com DR. MICHELE GREEN COSMETIC DERMATOLOGIST

“Skin tends to dry out during the fall as the heat and humidity of summer start to fade, meaning that it’s time to amp up the hydrating skincare. Switching over to a richer, creamier moisturizer can help combat dry skin that typically accompanies the colder weather. Humectant ingredients like hyaluronic acid will help promote moisture retention in the skin, boosting the health and strength of the skin’s natural protective barrier. Also, if you don’t have a humidifier, consider investing in one. Having a humidifier in your home can help add some moisture to the air that’s depleted as the seasons shift to cooler months. Boosting the hydration in the air can help prevent dry and irritated skin.” michelegreenmd.com DAVID LOPEZ CELEBRITY STYLIST

“Transitioning hair from the summer into the fall should be relatively straightforward. After the summer your hair will need a little bit of TLC from being exposed to the sun. Think about incorporating a hair mask into your weekly routine or replacing your conditioner with a hair mask. Also think about your heat styling tools. After this summer you might want to think about what temperature you’re using your tools at depending on whether you heat-styled often or left your hair in its natural state, which makes it a little bit healthier. Dialing into your temperature for your hair type—the T3 Heat ID tools are great for this!” t3micro.com

all is an exciting time because it brings a sense of new beginnings. Cooler weather and looking forward to holidays and winter getaways is the perfect time to think about how you can finally deliver on your commitment to doing something for yourself. From non-invasive medspa treatments to Rapid Recovery surgical solutions, Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg will help you begin the fall season in the best shape possible. Sun and wind exposure does affect the skin. Now is the time to refresh and revitalize, and get your skin ready for the colder months ahead. A deep-cleansing HydraFacial is the perfect place to start, providing cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, and hydration. It removes surface damage such as dead skin cells and impurities, but it also replenishes the skin with antioxidants through Vortex-Fusion, resulting in fabulous, glowing, healthy skin. Treating sun damage with IPL (intense pulsed light) reverses the signs of aging. IPL photo-rejuvenation penetrates the layers of the skin and stimulates the growth of new collagen, while eliminating excess pigment, redness, spider veins, fine lines, and enlarged pores. IPL can be used on the face, hands, chest, or arms, and promotes smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

Dr. Greenberg’s cuttingedge technology Morpheus8 targets subdermal layers of tissue to stimulate the production of collagen and improve skin tone and texture. The device can expertly control depth of penetration to addresses a wide variety of concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, sagging jowls, crepey skin, smoker’s lines, crow’s feet, and even scars and stretch marks. Morpheus8 is the ultimate antiaging treatment to restore, refresh, and revive skin on the face and body quickly without downtime. Cosmetic injectable treatments lift, restore, and contour the cheeks, jowls, lower face, lips, and eyes — many times with immediate results. Fat transfer to the face, including the lips, cheeks, jaw, and under-eye area results in a rejuvenated look and can even be used on the hands and buttocks. Dr. Greenberg, a dual board-certified plastic surgeon, specializes in providing the latest Rapid Recovery face and body surgical options. THE POWER OF INFLUENCE

O

ut of the static created by the clash of puff pieces and jarring news, meaningful content is the color we crave. We seek individuals with substantial and diverse experiences. Andrew Warren’s CollXab is the multicultural, identity-forward, authentic group to satiate our need for connection. These social media influencers have a story to tell and a passion that jumps off the screen. Brands clamor towards these Instagram favorites due to their authenticity. It’s that same trait that earns their viewers trust and also makes them so discerning with whom they partner. This set has added their own uniqueness to the Hamptons fabric and we all want to know more…

ANDREW WARREN Age: 28 Occupation: Co-founder of CollXab

Andrew, this year has been all about the pivot! What inspired you to transition from fashion design to launching your own company CollXab? The things I have always loved most are fashion and I guess you can say PR. While running Just Drew, I instinctively did all of our PR since it’s always come naturally. My friends have always joked that I was the male version of Kris Jenner. It just so happened that I reconnected with my amazing partner Arleigh Banner over the pandemic, who started her career at a traditional PR agency, and our working relationship started by her managing me personally. When we realized what a great team we made, we started CollXab and now represent a variety of brands and talent in various niches. My parents also played an important role in inspiring me to start CollXab after I watched them pave their own way with an unconventional, successful career while still putting me and our family first. Tell us about what Collxab does and how it sets itself apart from competitors? Collxab, for starters, is a female and LGBTQIA+ founded company that is a group of talented millennials. We are a team of marketers, strategists, and creatives by day — but we are consumers, fans, and culture addicts by nature. We “get it” because we live it. We’re not your average partner. And we feel really good about that. We’re also different in that not only do we represent a group of awesome talent, but we also work with brands on a project and retainer basis for various services. What makes your talent different from other agencies? We represent a range of people from models, singers, DJs, LGBTQIA+, designers, makeup artists, meme accounts, fitness trainers and SocialLifeMagazine.com

more. Anyone that joins the “CollXab Fam,” as we call it, brings a one-of-a-kind quality to the group. What are some of your proudest CollXab partnerships? Within the past year, we’ve had so much fun working with some awesome brands, such as NARS, Samsung, Burst Oral Care, Sakara Life, Lucky Brand, Baked by Melissa, Burberry, 21Seeds Tequila, and so many more. These have been social content creation, curated dinners, events, etc. From the brand side of the business, we’ve worked with companies in a range of industries, such as apps (nate app, Split, Apollo), tech (Flowcode), fashion (Zach Dillon New York, The Latest Thing), beverage (Lolea Sangria), and more! One of our current exciting projects is the upcoming Palm Tree Festival with Kygo, Zedd, Gryffin, and Frank Walker to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 by donating a portion of ticket sale proceeds to two charitable organizations: Feal Good Foundation and LT Michael P. Murphy Navy Seal Museum. One of our favorite projects to date has been with nate where we were able to ideate creative video concepts and see them through the execution. We spoofed Scream Queens where I reenacted Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts) for the holidays and the other was a Pretty Little Liars gifting reenactment with Ashley Benson. What does the influencer market look like in the Hamptons? Is it as popular as everywhere else? I think the Hamptons is an important niche and market for social media. We’ve seen a rise in emerging brands activating out East



F E AT U R E S

over the past few years. The lure is the demographic of quality prominent people that value luxury, experiences, travel, fashion and charity. Since it always happens to be a small world, people out East typically know each other and come together for amazing events. What do you think it takes to be a successful influencer today? Be original and be yourself from the start. Stand for something that you believe in, be genuine, follow through on your word and always go the extra mile. By choice, I didn't work on any paid partnerships until I was about 25 or 26. I wanted to always stay organic and post my real life. I still live by that rule now, but have learned to work with select brands that I either really use or are partnering with charities and causes I truly believe in. You and your co-cover stars are part of the next generation of the Hamptons. How have the Hamptons played a role in your life, personally and professionally? The Hamptons is really its own community that has changed and grown so much. My family has had a house out here from before I was born and I’ve watched the Hamptons change throughout the years. Personally, I feel I have made some amazing friendships and relationships because it’s more of a tight-knit community than New York City. Professionally, since I have helped so many people with events, work, and guest lists out of my sheer passion for them, it made it easier to start CollXab. And in doing so, there was not as much to prove in the Hamptons because I have been here forever and everyone is aware of our capabilities and our potential. Who are the girls in the shoot with you? And who are some of your other talents we might know with CollXab? Four of our diverse CollXab talents are in the shoot with us today — Danielle Naftali, Julia Moshy and Ethan D’Spain. Others to note are Hayley Hasselhoff, Ava Dash, Roma Abdesselam (Stay at Home Daughter), Dylan Geick, Charlotte Bickley, Ann Caruso, Greer Grammer, Edo Ferragamo, Ava Sambora, Gaia Matisse, Noor Pahlavi, Mike Tommasiello (NY Doorman), Bec Donlan, Jamie Grimstad, Rosa Crespo, Preston Nicholas, Coco Roberts, Michelle Madonna, Sydney Tobin, Jocelyn Chew, Dylan Farella, Brooke Korine, and so many more. Anything else we should know? If you’re looking for influencer marketing, representation, brand partnerships, help with events, activations, etc., you know who to call! And this wouldn’t be an article on the Hamptons if I didn’t mention how much I love The Surf Lodge.

DANIELLE NAFTALI

Age: 27 Occupation: Executive Vice President of Marketing + Design at Naftali Group You’re the real estate maven of the group; where does your passion stem from? I absolutely love the design aspect of my job, being a part of the process in creating both beautiful and functional homes. We are about to launch two special projects that I’ve worked on for many years, both on the famed Upper East Side. 200 East 83rd Street is launching this fall, a beautiful 500-foot tower designed by Robert A.M. Stern. The other project is 1165 Madison Avenue, a boutique building hand-laid with Indiana limestone, also designed by Robert A.M. Stern — with soaring ceiling heights. What is your favorite Hamptons-style home? I love a beautiful shingled-style house on the beach with modern interiors. You recently got engaged; where are you in the wedding plans? My fiancé, Lucas, and I are currently planning our wedding at the Rosewood in Mayakoba. We are looking forward to hosting an intimate wedding with our closest family and friends at the beautiful resort. Of course, our French bulldog, Henry, will be in attendance. What was getting engaged in the Hamptons like? My fiancé told me that we were doing a photoshoot with his family on the beach. The Hamptons is our special place, and it was perfect! Social Life

ETHAN D’SPAIN Age: 24 Occupation: Content Creator + Beauty Director of PAPER

They’ve seen me move to Paris, attend school at NYU, and now watch me create beauty content! Top fall fashion and beauty tips? Honestly, fall fashion/beauty is my absolute favorite, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a Libra. I love playing with textures, mixing leather and shiny crocodile textiles with fluffy chunky knits. For makeup, I love sticking with neutral brown/ gold shimmery eyeshadows and blush to illuminate the face and make it stand out from all the neutral tones I wear.

Claim to Instagram fame? It’s such a funny story! When Instagram came out in 2010, I was 13 years old, and I felt like nobody wanted to see this random little kid from Dallas. Still, I was obsessed with fashion and luxury, so I started a fashion page to take photos from Pinterest and upload them to my Instagram. Essentially, I was creating a mood board of really glamorous things that were trendy at the time. A few years later, the account had flourished, but I then decided to make it personal and change the handle to my own. So, a lot of my followers have been with me for a long time! SocialLifeMagazine.com

Favorite Hamptons event to get all glammed up for? The Alice + Olivia Pride Prom this June! One of the most fun and chaotic moments of my life. It started when I decided to get my teeth bleached the morning of the event and then drive out East with one of my friends, but because I got my teeth whitened, I couldn’t eat anything, so I was hungry and packed in a rush, and I left my heels for the event! We had to stop and pick up a pair of heels on the way. It was absolute chaos. Then, I was live-streaming as I panicglammed in the hotel room. One word . . .mess. We got to the event, and it was so beautiful. I met so many TikTok friends, and then we took a limo back to the city that night to see Madonna perform! What do you want your followers to take away most from your content? I’d like for my followers to remember that beauty comes from within. Every day, my DMs are flooded with people asking for makeup and skincare advice saying that they don’t feel/look beautiful. We often forget that beauty isn’t all about physical appearance. It’s about confidence and embracing your flaws and finding beauty in them. If confidence is all you have, you will instantly be the most beautiful person in any room.

JULIA MOSHY

Age: 29 Occupation: Membership Development + Culture at Casa Cipriani

CREATIVE TEAM DAKOATA HAMMOND

Meet the millennial stylist behind our cover shoot and creator of the line Happiest in the Hamptons. How did you get into styling?! I started out working in a small boutique in college and ended up in fashion PR in NYC. That put me in contact with a lot of the brands that I work with today. I’ve always had a passion for fashion and have never let it go! What was the inspiration behind the cover shoot? I really tried to capture everyone’s style and make them look their absolute best. I love how every single participant has their own personality. The style of the Hamptons is so relaxed and stylish. It’s incredible to look around and see some people in cover-ups all day and then other people in designer head-to-toe. Tell us about your hoodie line, Happiest in the Hamptons! It’s inspired by Lizzy’s dog. [Lizzy Schwartz, Alene Too founder.] In 2010 we were going out in Amagansett and would watch how happy her dog Moses would get as we turned onto Route 27. We got him a little dog onesie with “Happiest in the Hamptons” on it and it’s been history ever since! You can shop at shophappiesthere.com.

Tell us about your role at Casa Cipriani! My background is end-to-end events and collaborations. When I learned about the new wave of private members clubs opening in NYC, it sparked my interest as a way to progress and evolve my skillset. You’re passionate about health and wellness. How does that translate to your social media presence? I struggled with anxiety for most of my childhood and suffer from Lyme disease, so you can imagine that taking care of my physical and mental health is very important to me. Social media is a mostly highlight reel of everyone’s life, and don’t get me wrong, I feature my highlights too, but it’s rare to come across an influencer who feels comfortable revealing their hardships. I felt it was my duty to be a part of that movement.

BARRON ROTH

Meet the millennial photographer behind our cover shoot. How did you get into photography? Photography is very much a science, and every shoot I have is really a puzzle for me to achieve a vision with the constraints of lighting and camera physics. That sounds so incredibly nerdy, but that’s how I see it!

No. 1 tip for posting? Your best posts aren’t over-thought.

What was your inspiration for our shoot? For this shoot, I wanted to emphasize the unique forest green hues of the Hamptons. I grew up in Miami, and green there looks very different, so the first time I saw the Hamptons I was surprised by the color of the foliage. I wanted to amplify those hues with the contrasting colors of the gorgeous outfits.

What are your favorite restaurants out East? Cipriani at Home has been my go-to since the truck arrived in Southampton. I am also a big Pierre’s girl, Tutto il Giorno in Sag, Bostwick’s, Crow’s Nest, Si Si, and Jean-Georges at Topping Rose!

What are you working on now? I’m off to the South of France to work on a collection of images during Cannes Yachting Festival! If you’re reading this, send me some recommendations. @barronrothphotography Social Life

Seeds was born at the Hamptons’ kitchen counter of its co-founder Kat Hantas. This tequila’s fresh taste is homegrown and the business doesn’t stray far from its inception — it is run by two sisters and their close friend. As an influencer and someone who has tried alcohol brands from all over the world, we have to admit what we love most about 21Seeds is that it’s as refreshing as it is delicious. Read on to find out more about our favorite tequila. Why did you decide to launch your own tequila? My doctor recommended that I switch to drinking distilled spirits from wine. Unfortunately, I found tequila to be too harsh to drink. As an avid cook, I started infusing my own in a Brita pitcher and that changed the blanco completely for the better! What I created was smooth, but not sweet, with a hint of flavor making it easy to drink. What sets your tequila apart from others? 21Seeds is an all-natural real-fruit infused tequila that allows you to make easy, better-for-you cocktails with absolutely no sacrifice on taste. How has 21Seeds evolved since it launched? What started as a test run in California in 2019 has blossomed into a tequila brand that can now be found at most major grocery stores and chains including FreshDirect, ReserveBar in New York, Hampton Bottle, and across 46 states!

As we raise our glasses to the end of summer, what stands out as your best memory? Drinking perfect Spicy Skinnyseed Margaritas with my best girlfriends on our boat heading to sunset beach to drink another round of Spicy Skinnyseed Margaritas! Anything else we should know?! We love creating better-for-you versions of your favorite cocktails, and if you are looking for some, visit our blog on our website 21seeds.com or on Instagram @21seeds. Social Life

TEN ANXIOLYTIC SUPERFOODS FOR REDUCING ANXIETY By Liana Werner-Gray After years of my own research, and with the help of a medical doctor and a pharmacist, I created a supplement specially formulated to target anxiety. My supplements will feed your brain, gut, and nervous system with superfoods that are neuro-protective, anxiolytic, and help build resilience to life’s inevitable stresses.

My Anxiety-Free supplement is made with 10 carefully selected organic ingredients. 1. ASHWAGANDHA Ashwagandha is a popular supplement known for strengthening the immune system. It has been used for centuries to alleviate fatigue and improve general well-being. It has powerful antianxiety, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also an adaptogen, which helps the body respond to stress.

S

ome foods can reduce anxiety (anxiolytic) and some foods can cause anxiety (anxiogenic). Mental health has increasingly become part of the national conversation. Seventy-six percent of American adults think mental health is just as important as physical health, and 141 million, or more than half the U.S. adult population, have sought or wanted to seek mental health treatment for themselves or others. Over the past year one in three Americans have shown signs of clinical anxiety or depression. Andrew McCulloch, M.D., chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, says: “The time is right for nutrition to become a mainstream, everyday component of mental health care, and a regular factor in mental health promotion.” I couldn’t agree more, and this is why I am a proponent of believing that food is medicine.

2. SPIRULINA Spirulina is considered a superfood because it is high in vitamins, including A, C, E, and a range of Bs, as well as minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. Along with these important nutrients, spirulina helps reduce anxiety because it contains omega-3 fatty acids and chlorophyll. Spirulina can help protect cells and tissues from damage and increases healthy micro-flora in the gut. Because of its high protein content, NASA has used spirulina as a dietary supplement for its astronauts during space missions. Spirulina is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. This pervasive life-form owes its superfood status to its high concentration of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Through photosynthesis, it turns sunlight into oxygen in water. People use spirulina for boosting the immune system, improving memory, and otherwise assisting with good brain health, increasing energy and metabolism, and improving digestion and bowel health. 3. TURMERIC Turmeric and its active component, curcumin, have been well studied for their neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. Curcumin modulates various neurotransmitter Social Life

levels in the brain and has anxiolytic effects on biochemical and behavioral symptoms associated with anxiety. 4. FLAXSEED Flaxseed contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), and is a vegan source of omega-3 fats, the fats the brain thrives on. Research has shown that people who consume more omega-3s from foods or supplements may have a lower risk of developing anxiety, depression, and other problems with cognitive function. 5. ECHINACEA Echinacea plants contain a variety of active compounds that provide health benefits, such as reduced inflammation, improved immunity, and lower blood-sugar levels. 6. CHLORELLA Chlorella is a blue-green algae containing linoleic acid (omega-6 fatty acid), chlorophyll, and a lot of nutrients, including antioxidants, that help to repair DNA. In one study smokers were given a daily chlorella supplement. After six weeks, participants’ blood-level tests showed a 44 percent increase in vitamin C, a 16 percent increase in vitamin E, and a significant decrease in DNA damage. 7. SCHISANDRA Schisandra is a berry that is an adaptogenic food, that is, it increases one’s resistance to disease and stress symptoms, while increasing energy and physical endurance. It counters stress by reducing the level of stress hormones, such as cortisol, in the blood. 8. GINKGO Ginkgo biloba has been used in traditional Chinese medicine since at least the 11th century BC. It has been repeatedly evaluated for its ability to reduce anxiety, stress, and other symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and in many studies has shown to enhance cognitive functioning and stabilize mood. 9. CELERY Celery has become incredibly popular this year and is known for being a great source of important antioxidants, reducing inflammation, and supporting digestion. It’s rich in vitamins and minerals and has an alkalizing effect. SocialLifeMagazine.com

10. BILBERRIES Bilberries are often called European blueberries and have been used for medicinal purposes since the Middle Ages. They are high in polyphenols and rich in antioxidants that help to ease stress and anxiety. They have also been known to improve insulin levels, and assist with good gut health. u Liana Werner-Gray is a nutritionist, natural food chef, and best-selling author of The Earth Diet, Cancer Free with Food and Anxiety-Free with Food. IAN DUKE’S TRIO OF DINING EXCELLENCE IN SOUTHAMPTON By Peter Elston

The Coop Fried Chicken with Fries

ast year, Ian Duke and his business partner, David Hilty, the owners of the ever-popular Southampton Social Club and Union Burger Bar, unveiled the East End’s hottest new dining destination: Union Sushi and Steak, a modern take on the steakhouses of old. Situated in the historic Bowden Square property that formerly housed the famous Herb McCarthy’s, and co-located with Union Burger Bar, Union Sushi & Steak manages to fuse the energy of a supper club from the days of old with a modern ambience. The cuisine is brought to you by the award-winning chefs Scott Kampf and Marc Fasciana, of distinct fame and tenure. The delectable menu features dry-aged steaks that are courtesy of Niman Ranch in Colorado, and the assorted fresh sushi and sashimi menu is both enticing and inventive. As with the Southampton Social club, Union Sushi & Steak has a supper club feel with an extra touch of sophistication. “We created Union Sushi & Steak because it’s what the people of Southampton were asking for,” Duke said. “Southampton had no year-round sushi restaurants and there wasn’t a dedicated steakhouse. Before now, it was a trek for a real roll-upyour-sleeves steakhouse dining experience.” Meanwhile, Duke’s award-winning burgers and fries spot, Union Burger Bar, continues to serve up American comfort

food in the adjacent space. Also, the incredible demand for the Hamptons most popular ghost kitchen pop-up, The Coop, has made the foodie favorite gain a permanent home. Union Burger Bar is proud to announce that some favorites from The Coop can now be found on the Union Burger Bar menu, making it the ultimate dining destination on the East End. The permanent home at Union Burger Bar will now allow guests to dine in and continue to do take-out. Customers can enjoy the menu that The Coop made famous along with the restaurant’s legendary burger, fries, and milkshake options. “Ultimately I find people always have conflicting perspectives on what they want to eat. What we’re doing is incorporating the best of both worlds. We have ridiculously great-tasting fried chicken and the mashed potatoes with gravy and creamy corn,” says Duke. “But we also have the healthy roasted chicken with fresh sides like brussels sprouts and roasted broccoli that are all farm-to-table. The chicken we buy is cage-free, antibiotic-free, and hormone-free. So essentially, we offer something for everybody.” dineatunion.com unionburgerbar.com thecooptogo.com Social Life

DISCOVER YOUR GWALLEE AT AIREM By Robyn Freedman

What is clinical K-Beauty and how did you bring this to the forefront of AIREM? K-beauty stands for Korean beauty which many people associate with sheet masks and a multi-step skincare regimen. Clinical K-beauty goes one step further. It combines leading skincare and aesthetic technology from Korea and the best Western clinical-grade ingredients. South Korea is a hub of aesthetic innovation, with some of the most ground-breaking launches in the United States having been

developed there. Aesthetic advancements span from injectables, laser devices, and micro-infusion technologies to thread-lifting and innovative surgical procedures. A comprehensive skincare routine is common practice in Korean culture. It is not uncommon for Korean women to do facials weekly and laser treatments monthly. Clinical-grade skincare ingredients, such as retinol and ceramides, are widely used and the culture of self-care is passed on from one generation to the next. What is “gwallee”? We practice “gwallee,” self-care with purpose and intention for physical, emotional, and mental health. AIREM offers a range of treatments that promote gwallee. One of our patient-favorite skincare treatments that can be done in-office, at-home or on-the-go is our Pearlessence Biocellulose Mask. It delivers intense hydration, strengthens the skin barrier, and has become a travel must-have, restoring moisture after sand, sun, and travel. Another staple in my practice is our AIREM Recovery Ritual kit, which reduces swelling and bruising post-treatment. Our clinical-grade products are designed to go hand-in-hand with aesthetic treatments. Social Life

Named a Super Doctor in the New York Times Magazine, she is the first female facial plastic surgeon on Long Island. Dr. Park is the founder of AIREM (Korean for “beauty”), the first Korean beauty-inspired medical aesthetic spa in the United States based on the concept of gwallee, a centuries-old Korean principle of maintaining self-care. AIREM, a haven for surgical and non-surgical procedures, brings together Eastern and Western principles of beauty. Born in Korea, but raised and educated in New York, Dr. Park was inspired after the birth of her third child to focus on her own need for self-care. This personal experience inspired her to help guide her patients through their own self-care journey. Dr. Park and her team of professionals offer aesthetic treatments ranging from injectables and microneedling to medical facials, nonsurgical body sculpting, and aesthetic surgery in a brand new stateof-the-art facility. They offer a truly unique group beauty experience that incorporates a traditional tea ritual called the AIREM Retreat and Harmoni, a 60-minute sound and harmonic resonance therapy that provides the equivalent of three hours of deep sleep. How long do cosmetic surgery results last? We all age differently. Results of cosmetic surgery depend on factors such as skin type, sun exposure, stress, diet, and hereditary factors that contribute to our external appearance. Most plastic surgery procedures have a longevity of years to several decades. What is your opinion about going to another country for cosmetic surgery that can be as much as five times less expensive than it is in the United States? There is a very high standard of quality and safety in the United States to uphold. Although there are talented surgeons around the world, not all countries can match our country’s standards for education, certification, and performance. Our private surgical suite at AIREM is AAAASF accredited, which is the gold standard of accreditation. What is the AIREM Retreat? We have a truly unique group beauty experience called the AIREM Retreat. Our beauty retreats include a 30-minute meditative tea ceremony with a tea master, followed by aesthetic treatments. Our private retreat room is the perfect space to relax, reconnect, and rejuvenate with friends and family. We also offer corporate, team-building retreats for up to eight guests.

Photography by Mark Weinberg

Do you see yourself both as an artist and perfectionist? It’s very important as a plastic surgeon to balance artistry with being a realist. The actual results begin with how little or how much change a patient desires. A person in his or her thirties, forties, and fifties wants to maintain a youthful appearance, so I create that with a gentle, subtle natural surgery. Restoring facial balance is the goal. I discuss with each patient if and how ideal expectations can be safely achieved. I’m able to offer the full spectrum from non-surgical to surgical facial rejuvenation. What is the most difficult cosmetic surgery? Facial plastic surgery is the most delicate and complex subspecialty of plastic surgery. Rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, facelifts, and neck lifts require knowledge of intricate anatomy because millimeters of change can make all the difference. For example, in rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, even a modest change in nasal contour requires a sophisticated understanding of nasal anatomy, precise surgical technique, and familiarity with the myriad pitfalls that can lead to potential complications in breathing. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Do you do anything special before you perform surgery? I like to spend quiet time in the early mornings before the start of a surgical day reflecting on the patient’s desired outcomes and reviewing the surgical plan. The private surgical suite at AIREM is a state-of-the art facility that creates a serene, patient-centered environment to maximize safety, privacy, and healing. Do you have a saying you live by? See the beauty in everything. Begin with yourself. AIREM 428 Jericho Turnpike, Syosset 516.614.1880 airem.com Instagram @airembeautyrituals Instagram @dreunicepark

DOES YOUR DÉCOLLETAGE REVEAL YOUR AGE? By Frances Gormley

A

nna Avaliani, M.D., would like you to take a good look at your décolletage. That’s your neck, chest, and shoulders. Do you have sunspots? Crepey skin? Deep lines? Broken blood vessels? Chances are if you have one issue, you may have others. Do you know that you can improve your décolletage just as you do your face? It’s a disconnect when a woman looks to correct Dr. Anna Avaliani problems with facial aging, but ignores these same, or worse, problems below her chin. Yet, our décolletage is frequently on display. It’s completely visible when we’re in a bathing suit or revealing dress, and it’s partially visible when we’re wearing a blouse. We even draw extra attention to our décolletage when we wear a necklace. This thin skin often ages faster than facial skin. Fortunately, we live in an age of cosmetic miracles. Dr. Anna Avaliani, is an award-winning non-invasive cosmetic surgeon whose clients from all walks of life include top models and entertainers who rely on her to keep them looking their best. Her patients can choose anyone, and they choose Dr. Avaliani. She has the expertise, experience, and the latest technology to restore and maintain a youthful appearance from face to toes. During a consultation, Dr. Avaliani carefully assesses a person’s skin and pinpoints its issues. She has many tools — from injectables to an array of 24 lasers that can smooth, lift, revive, and refresh a person’s décolletage. SocialLifeMagazine.com

THE TOOLS DR. AVALIANI USES MOST, THOUGH, ARE HIGHLIGHTED BELOW. PicoSure Focus is the gold standard for skin rejuvenation and it works well on all skin types. It treats dark spots, age spots, acne scars, wrinkles, surgical scars, stretch marks, and more — a treatment is less than 15 minutes and results in no downtime. PicoSure gently targets problem areas without harming surrounding tissue. It literally activates cells to produce important proteins that signal other cells to begin a healing response. Ultherapy uses ultrasound to tighten skin and eliminate lines and wrinkles by promoting collagen and usually only one treatment is necessary for great results. NovaThreads are absorbable fibers that work immediately to lift skin. Yes, they’re for the décolletage too. They promote collagen and result in continued improvement as they slowly dissolve over several months. Genius RF Microneedling is an advanced combination treatment. Micro-thin needles stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to reduce lines and smooth wrinkles. The resulting micro channels allow radio frequency (RF) heat to penetrate deeply into the dermis for lifting and tightening. Only a consultation can determine which of the above, alone or in combination, or something else entirely is best for you. The one constant that’s best for you is Dr. Anna Avaliani. Her Park Avenue stateof-the-art cosmetic and laser center is one of the few that has been honored with the prestigious Cynosure Center of Excellence Award. ANA L. OLIVEIRA THE PHILANTHROPIST JEAN SHAFIROFF INTERVIEWS ANA L. OLIVEIRA, PRESIDENT & CEO OF THE NEW YORK WOMEN’S FOUNDATION

By Jean Shafiroff Tell us about The New York Women’s Foundation. The New York Women’s Foundation’s mission is to create an equitable and just future for all women and girls. We’ve been investing in women-led, innovative and bold, community-based solutions for almost 35 years now. By the end of 2021, we will reach the major milestone of over $100 million awarded to more than 500 grassroots organizations igniting change across New York City and beyond. Yet through it all, our mission has never changed — we steadfastly support women’s leadership and economic security.

I constantly am inspired by the resilience and ability of women to speak their truth and create innovative ways to solve problems and advance justice. At the center of our work are our grantee partners, and we follow their lead. The foundation is a proud supporter of organizations that were a safe space and sounding board for women over the past year, as they advanced solutions including direct cash assistance to the communities and workers who were severely impacted. What opportunities are there for women in the workforce going forward? We have an incredible opportunity to not return to the status quo of what was, but to build back a world that is more equitable and

just for all. Due to the strains of the past year, many women were forced to leave the workforce, and are not reentering at the same rate as men. To support women in living safe lives and building their economic security, it is necessary that we advance and advocate sustainable solutions such as equal pay, flexibility of schedule, affordable care-giving, and creating safe and affirming work environments free from sexual harassment and bias. The health of our economy and communities depends on it. What does the future of philanthropy look like? How can we promote a spirit of collective giving? Philanthropy often lags behind social movements. The future of philanthropy is found by following the lead of our grantee partners and the communities they serve. The foundation is committed to Social Life

Jean Shafiroff, photography by Michael Paniccea

What has the last year taught us about women’s leadership and resilience? What has inspired you? Through the disruption of our usual way of living, we realized how important women are to the economy and in sustaining families. From the workforce to their own communities and families, women play a key role and must have competent support in these areas. At the foundation, we’re committed to building forward and advancing sustainable solutions that build the power and economic security of women.

n a high-income community on the East End where, for most, privilege is a given, Bonnie Michelle Cannon’s desire to help underprivileged families is undeniably commendable. As the Executive Director of the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center — (BCCRC), Cannon is personally invested in her students’ success. Her unique approach assisting marginalized families obtain critical personal and educational resources is unsurpassed. Through the Center, Ms. Cannon is instrumental in creating innovative programs, and with her educational team helps to meet basic needs of their clients while also offering specialized services. Unfortunately, many disadvantaged families in the East End community are still in desperate need of food and services. Prior to the pandemic, the foundation’s food pantry was serving 70 families per week; today post-COVID, they are serving 700 families and desperately need community support. Cannon, who has been with BCCRC for 13 years, says the Center has evolved tremendously. “In order to be successful for the children, I have to be involved with each individual family and the entire community.” As a result of the children’s specific needs, Cannon has created and launched various proSocialLifeMagazine.com

grams such as the Latinix Program which teaches English and Spanish for translation purposes and “Teach Me How to Fish,” a high-skilled work force training program. In addition, an important member of the Center’s educational team is a substance misuse activist. Cannon explains, “Most of my clients that come here are black and brown families; they are single working mothers or are dysfunctional families and ones with substance abuse issues. These are the people I service. We are much more than just a childcare center. We are a historically black community-based organization, and our mission is to serve all East End marginalized children and families.” Actress Christine Evangelista, who currently stars in AMC ‘s hit TV show Fear the Walking Dead, resides in Bridgehampton and sits on the advisory board of BCCRC. The Hollywood actress, who portrays Sherry on AMC’s post- apocalyptic horror drama series is known for her TV and film roles on The Arrangement, The Walking Dead and Bleed for This, spends her free time promoting the Center’s mission. When she is not filming, the native New Yorker enjoys raising awareness and funds for the Center’s less fortunate families. Evangelista hosted BCCRC’s annual CARe Wash event this summer which raised 50k for families in need.

Evangelista credits the Center with being much more than an after-school program, one that also teaches life skills and helps to prepare its clients for the future. “They help families with financial planning and help students obtain college scholarships. These kids are amazing, and even watching them today at this event, they are so “hands on.” Also in attendance at the CARe Wash Event was Michael Davies the President and CEO of Embassy Row, a New York City-based television production company that is a unit of Sony Pictures Television. Davies, a British television producer known for developing TV personalities such as Jimmy Kimmel of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Andy Cohen of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, is also the producer of several American hit TV shows including the popular game shows, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and The Newlywed Game and is co-host of the NBC show Men in Blazers. The founder of Embassy Row sits on the advisory board of the BCCRC foundation with Evangelista, his significant other. This energetic

duo resides together in the charming seaside village and appreciates helping underprivileged families in the community. Davies explains, “The Center just runs this amazing program caring for about 500 families in the wealthiest zip codes in the country, and they take care of these families from birth and help with really everything in their lives.” Evangelista goes on to say, “Both Michael and I want to invest locally in our community. In the past year, we really put the pedal to the medal and have been working closely with the Center. One thing we learned from the pandemic is we have the power to do things, and it is important to act locally. Here, in one of the wealthiest places in the world, the line for the food pantry during the pandemic was down the block, so Michael and I really felt the need to do things to help out.” Also in attendance at the 2nd annual CARe Wash event was CNN Journalist Don Lemon who showed up to support the cause as well as Joey Wolffer, board member of BCCRC, who donates her free time to assist the foundation in its mission. The Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center has been in existence since its inception in 1954 and is situated on farmland that was donated to the Center. After a tragic accident in the 1940’s when a migrant campfire killed two children of seasonal workers, a farmer donated six acres of property to create the foundation. Cannon describes the programs this unique child-care center offers. “We start with our babies. We have a pre -K program for our 3 to 5-year olds, and we have an after-school program that is for our 5-yearolds to teens.” BCCRC also has a teen program that is called D.R.E.A.M. Teens, which stands for dedication, responsibility, education, attitude, and motivation. “Many of the people that we work with don’t know anything about going to college or the college admission process. We have a college prep-program where I offer one-on-one counseling, and I work with the families and the kids.” With the help of Cannon and her educational team, one of the Center’s students, Christian, received a full scholarship SocialLifeMagazine.com

Intersect Aspen, The Art Fair

Coming back to Aspen is like visiting a cherished friend, albeit several of my favorite spots and people are no longer there. First, I miss the late Harley Baldwin, aka “The Mayor of Aspen,” who for decades was one of the prime reasons Aspen became a jet-set destination because of the private Caribou Club he founded in 1990. The ’bou is still going strong 31 years later. Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn’s daughter, even got married here. Harley, an accomplished skier, dancer, and bon vivant also opened the Baldwin Gallery, still the town’s top art space. On my visit to Aspen’s Intersect Art Fair, Harley’s partner, Richard Edwards, opened a stunning show at the gallery by Will Cotton, featuring pink horses and cowboys. Who else would tell you these things? Over at the fair, Isabelle Bscher’s Galerie Gmurzynska won pride of place and sold works by Picasso and Miró for seven figures. She also had works by Louise Nevelson, Yves Klein, Wifredo Lam, and Zaha Hadid. Isabel and her mother, Krystyna Gmurzynska, hosted a chic dinner at Casa Tua for the crème de la crème of the art world. Also in town were Chase Bank’s Jamie Dimon, Hamptons habitués Andrea and John Stark, and the entrepreneur Chris Brown, among others too private to mention. THE FLOOD SISTERS By Rolise Rachel

The mission of the Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation is to inspire people to become living donors, aka altruistic Jennifer, Heather, and Cynthia Flood

donors, for those in need and to encourage kidney patients to use non-traditional means of reaching suitable living donors.

I

n 2008, the sisters Jennifer, Heather, and Cynthia Flood founded The Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation, in Chappaqua, New York. This was in response to their father’s need for a kidney transplant. No one in his family was a suitable donor, so the only option then available was to hope he’d find a match via the national waiting list. But the Flood sisters embarked on a mission to save their father’s life, so that he didn’t have to spend years on dialysis and be on the brink of constant renal failure. “Many chronic renal candidates think there is no hope for them. Our dad felt the same way until we researched. Then the three of us knew that there was hope out there and

collectively as a family we were determined to find it. The more we raise awareness, the less need there will be for a waiting list,” says Jennifer Flood. The mission of the Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation is to inspire people to become living donors, aka altruistic donors, for those in need and to encourage kidney patients to use nontraditional means of reaching suitable living donors. Through an aggressive program, the foundation is tirelessly spreading the word that a kidney from a living donor is most likely a more suitable match than a cadaveric kidney, which has a higher incidence of infection. According to Jennifer Flood, “It is only through courage, persistence, hope, and love that we can start saving lives together. Over 3,000 people are listed daily, that is one person every nine seconds that is diagnosed with kidney disease or failure. Living donors shorten the time it takes to receive a kidney and at least one in three in the Unite States are living donors.” The Flood Sisters floodsisterskidneyfnd.org Social Life

BEST REAL ESTATE BROKERS IN THE HAMPTONS NEST SEEKERS INTERNATIONAL’S JACK RICHARDSON By Laura Rothchild

rowing up in Suffolk County with his parents and two sisters, Jack Richardson spent most of his time in the various towns on the eastern end of Long Island — summers on the beach, fall in the orchards, and spring in the vineyards. During rides home from outings with his parents, he often heard them say, “What a place to live — where you are literally a short drive from hitting water in nearly every direction.” This is something Richardson knows the true value of. Prior to working at Nest Seekers International, and before graduating from Dartmouth College, Richardson worked in commercial real estate for Cushman & Wakefield in Manhattan. There his responsibilities included gathering comps, building out portfolios, and putting together presentations, which gave him invaluable insights into client relationships, and the importance of listening. Post-graduation, he reunited with the familiar surroundings of his home and quickly found himself very interested in Long Island residential investments. Richardson’s competitive edge and indomitable will to succeed, combined with his belief that to learn one must listen, give him the skill set to provide services to his clients on a one-on-one personal level.

rom August 12th to August 15th, I had the honor of working at the beautiful Market Art & Design, located at the Bridgehampton Museum. After two long years without this art fair, it was incredibly heartening to see local galleries and artists show up and showcase such great work once again. Among all the stunning artwork, my favorite standout pieces came from Chase Edwards Contemporary Gallery, The White Room Gallery, and The Mark Borghi Gallery. Theo Pinto, From Sky to Sea, oil on resin, 60 x 60 in, (Chase Edwards Contemporary) This circular beauty is an exploration of light when day meets night and sky meets sea. Theo’s work is a deep dive into how we experience the sky; not as an external image but as a shared moment. It is an invitation to contemplate how the sky is the common denominator bringing all people — from all times —closer together, both physically and cosmically.

Bo Bartlett, The Promised Land, 2015, oil on linen, 88 x 120 in. With a powerful ability to discern and amplify the magical possibilities of ordinary life, Bo Bartlett exemplifies the potential for exploration in narrative figurative painting with his informed and technically skilled interpretation of contemporary portraiture. Based in Columbus, Georgia, Barlett dissolves formal distinctions between portraiture and self-representation, exploring the unspoken implications of identity as well as relationships within an image and the viewer-subject relationship. Bartlett’s subjects are rendered fully as individuals, and his articulation of realism transcends mere mimesis. Often approaching the fantastical, the artist’s meticulous control inflects each painting with an uncanny psychological resonance. In single and group portraits, Bartlett takes up the influence and concerns of American realists like Andrew Wyeth and Thomas Eakins to capture the elusive coexistence of physical reality, emotional experience, memory, and dreams. Glenn Ligon, Untitled (Hands with Grit) 1999, oilstick and grit on printed card laid on panel, 5 x 7 in.

Glenn Ligon is a Bronx-born multimedia Conceptual artist, best known for his textual paintings that explore the history of race and sexuality in America. Ligon’s early career was in Abstract art, but progressed to Conceptual ideas in the late 1980s when he began to create his famous textual paintings. In these paintings, Ligon uses repetition of text taken from well-known writers such as Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison to tell visual stories of sexuality, race, and identity. The majority of Ligon’s work focuses of African-American identity, and more recently, interracial gay sex. Mr. Brainwash, Balloon Girl, 2020, silkscreen and mixed media on canvas, 44 x 33 in. For more than a decade, Thierry Guetta, under his moniker Mr. Brainwash, has been pushing the envelope of contemporar y art. The orchestrated collision of street art and pop art has been his balancing act. The tipping point for Mr. Brainwash was his groundbreaking footage from the widely-acclaimed documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. This Oscar-nominated film demonstrates the evolution of the street art movement with Mr. Brainwash, who, alongside Banksy, brings art to the masses. SocialLifeMagazine.com

His visual identity is embedded in geometric shapes which are forced into minimalistic forms while endlessly searching for simplicity and elegance. His minimal painting style is unapologetically bold yet poetic with traces to Scandinavian mid-century aesthetics. Trained as a still life photog rapher, his fine art practise carries “less is always more” attitude into painting. Zarebinski’s devotion to Danish modernism and minimal approach, visibly translates to his original artwork. RICK FRIEDMAN HAMPTONS FINE ART FAIR By Bennett Marcus your own property — pieces by major names like Louise Bourgeois, Larry Rivers, and David Salle are for sale at up to $5 million. Fifty galleries from around the world will be exhibiting at the fair and online, and an additional 20 will show only online, because travel restrictions are challenging for some international galleries.

ART FAIR MAESTRO A must this Labor Day weekend is the first-ever Hamptons Fine Art Fair, September 2 through Septembr 5, at the Southampton Arts Center (SAC). A fundraiser for SAC, this art expo is unique, says its producer Rick Friedman, one of America’s foremost art fair promoters. “The fact that this is a popular arts center in the heart of Southampton village is significant,” says Friedman, an art world veteran. “This esteemed Southampton Arts Center building and grounds, formerly the site of the highly respected Parrish Art Museum, has been a beacon of the Hamptons art scene for 100 years.” Friedman has enlisted two philanthropist friends who agreed to match the gate receipts for Friday and Sunday as an additional contribution to SAC. DE KOONING & POLLOCK PAVILIONS Friedman believes this is the only art fair ever to be held in an art museum. Augmenting the site will be three tent pavilions, the de Kooning and Pollock pavilions, and a VIP lounge. You can wander through the sculpture garden and find inspiration for enhancing

JEWEL BOX OF A FINE ART FAIR The art on view is significant, with works valued at a minimum of $10,000 and up into the millions. “It’s a boutique, high-caliber, sophisticated fair,” says Friedman. “It’s not a big show like the Armory Show or Art Basel with 250 exhibitors and where you can get lost in it. It’s the right size; it’s like a little jewel box with really excellent art.” Many galleries applied, and organizers curated the 50 best. THEMES: BLACK & FEMALE ARTISTS, ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISTS Contemporary Black artists and women artists are two of the themes explored at the Hamptons Fine Art Fair. Another is Abstract Expressionism, a rediscovery of certain second-generation artists who painted in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s and remain a bit under the radar. “We’re focusing on those artists to sort of reevaluate their contributions to the art world,” says Friedman. INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS Some participating galleries will display work by an eclectic group of international Contemporary artists from Cuba, Russia, Argentina, and elsewhere. “Hamptonites are open to discovery, they’re open to new things as long as it’s quality-driven, and we’re very conscious of that,” says Friedman. “I think that people are really going to have a great time exploring and seeing.” However, he notes the oldies but goodies are there too. “We have the classics, as well. You can get an Andy Warhol dollar sign painting for seven figures if you want it. There’s something for everybody.” Social Life

five countries, and it was named one of America’s fastest-growing businesses. This was in the early 1990s, and on his advisory team were top tech executives, including Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. “It’s hard to believe, but I worked with Gates, I worked with Jobs, I got to know them and their idiosyncrasies.”

BLACK & WHITE GALLERY / PROJECT SPACE Tatyana Okshteyn’s Southampton-based Black & White Gallery / Project Space will have a booth devoted to the work of her late husband, Shimon Okshteyn. The solo show will be a retrospective of his five-decade career, including his critically acclaimed abstract and figurative works. Okshteyn’s works have been collected by the Whitney Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and New York State Museum. CARLTON FINE ARTS Charles Saffati of Carlton Fine Arts is showing new works by the NYC conceptual multimedia artist Linjie Deng. Deng is currently on the cover of Art Bodega Magazine, which is one of the fair’s leading sponsors. ENTREPRENEUR, ART SHOW MAGNATE & COLLECTOR Rick Friedman pioneered the concept of regional, luxury fine-art fairs around the nation. A Southampton resident, he founded Art Hamptons, which he later sold, and more recently produced a series of fine art fairs in affluent markets, including Aspen, Houston, San Francisco, Palm Springs, Philadelphia, Silicon Valley, and Jackson Hole. His renown is why SAC tapped Friedman to stage this fundraiser. BILL GATES & STEVE JOBS A serial entrepreneur, Friedman has also dabbled in fields other than art, including a stint running a company that produced computer-oriented magazines, books, and trade shows with offices in SocialLifeMagazine.com

STUDIO 54 & DANCE FEVER During the late 1970s Friedman was on the marketing teams of famed discotheques Studio 54 and Regine’s, where he created a series of disco dance contests that he sold to Merv Griffin and which became the basis of the syndicated TV show Dance Fever. “I originally was the emcee of the show at Regine’s. I am a former dancer myself, and I was quite an entertainer, and basically, [TV host] Deney Terrio became me,” he says with a laugh. ANDY WARHOL At Regine’s, Andy Warhol was one of the celebrity judges of the dance contests, and he kept offering to do Friedman’s portrait for a fee of $25,000. The sum was unimaginable to Friedman, who was in his early 20s at the time. “I was a kid, I mean 25 grand in those days was a car, or maybe a house. I just thought he was crazy, and what a mistake because it would be worth a lot more now.” MODERN & POST-WAR ART More recently, Friedman has done a few other things, like a design and décor show and a jewelry show, but art was always his true passion. “My heart wasn’t in it. I’m a serious art collector myself. I have 300 museum-quality paintings, and have done national museum tours from my collection.” His collection consists of mainly modern and post-war art, and he has the largest collection of the most acclaimed woman artists of the New York School of the 1950s and ’60s that has been shown at various museums. “It’s like a hobby became a business, and I’m fortunate to be able to be in that position.” Hamptons Fine Art Fair hamptonsfineartfair.com

CHARLES FAZZINO COMMEMORATING 9/11 WITH POP ART By Alexandra Moyen

Peter Alonzo and Charles Fazzino

T

Bernie Williams, Charles Fazzino and Charles Safatti, 9/11 A Time Of Remembrance

he legendary pop artist Charles Fazzino wants the 9/11 first responders to be “touched” when viewing his new work 9/11: A Time of Remembrance at the Carlton Fine Arts Gallery on Madison Avenue. “I’m hoping that when they look at the artwork, they feel the same way I did creating it,” the NYC artist said. “That it’s a triumph and a milestone of 20 years of putting that behind us because it’s changed all of our lives.” The NY Mets star Pete Alonzo helped unveil the work at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and a portion of all sales of the art and the prints will go to the museum. carltonfa.com SUPERBOWL & GRAMMY AWARDS Fazzino’s love for 3D pop art stems from his childhood fascination with pop-out books. He appreciates the wow factor 3D pop art can bring. When Fazzino’s art commemorates milestones for events such as the Superbowl and Grammys, his works are colorful, lighthearted, and bright. To move away from this for his 9/11 memorial piece, Fazzino said was difficult. To draw inspiration, he

did try to overlook the sadness and horrors of the 9/11 terrorist attack and instead looked to the future. “I researched 9/11 and I just physically and mentally put aside the horrors and I said, “Okay, this happened and I’m going to then draw the outcome of that and how that makes me feel, and it’s great that I can do that,” Fazzino said. THE TWIN TOWERS Fazzino says it’s an honor to have his art shown in the 9/11 Museum and Carlton Fine Arts and believes moments like these are what artists live for. Fazzino’s dramatic work commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11 has an ethereal depiction of the Twin Towers that look as though they’re disappearing into an American flag –– with, of course, a pop twist. “I live to have people, the masses, see the artwork. Unless these organizations show your work, it doesn’t do anything to have it hanging in your art studio and no one seeing it,” Fazzino said. “For me it was such an honor –– all of these organizations that have taken to my artwork –– it’s just humbling.” Social Life

MICHAEL JACKSON & JULIA ROBERTS Over the years, Fazzino has gone from selling his art in galleries to being commissioned for events such as the Grammys and the 2016 Rio Olympics. His art is in collections in 25 countries, and his collectors include Julia Roberts and Michael Jackson. At the Grammys Fazzino walked the red carpet, which he says is something “you can’t even imagine.” Although one part of him felt like he didn’t deserve to be there because he’s not a musical artist, another part of him recognized that he is, in fact, an artist who contributed to the evening. His artwork for the event was seen on the tickets, the program cover, and the official poster. Since then, his works have been on display in the Grammy Museum. 3D ART ENHANCES LIFE Fazzino says he has become known as “the artist who does 3D artwork of New York and other cities,” and is proud that his work is well received. But what makes him proudest is, a new generation finds his work to be cool and fresh. “The fact that this age group looks at my artwork like they’ve never seen it before is inspiring for me.” Fazzino’s artwork is extremely detailed, which takes a great deal of time. To lose track of time and keep his work fresh, Fazzino blasts contemporary jazz and pop music in his studio. “I like listening to contemporary jazz and pop music because it keeps me working SocialLifeMagazine.com

ART JOURNEY Fazzino grew up with art being made all around him. His mother sculpted and make clothes from recycled material, and his father sketched shoe designs for stores like Saks Fifth Avenue. Born in NYC, Fazzino took his first formal art class as a seventh grader and at 16 started selling what he calls “little paintings” at an arts and crafts show in Westchester. He then pursued a bachelor of arts degree and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. “When I went to the school of Visual Arts in New York, back in the ’70s, I wanted to stand out as an artist. I put two ideas together — my love of 3D pop-out books and my love for art that is colorful and whimsical,” said Fazzino.

faster, and it works with what I’m doing,” Fazzino said. “My work is very up, young, and fresh and I think the music helps me to keep it that way.” FIRST LOVE Fazzino says he wouldn’t trade the life he has made for himself for anything. He noticed how his siblings were so “damn miserable” going to 9-to-5 jobs, whereas he couldn’t wait for the weekend to end so he could go back to his studio. “I think all artists have a different way of viewing the world. I think being an artist, and having a creative outlet has enhanced my life,” Fazzino said. “I think that’s what it is for artists, that when you’re doing something super creative, it’s not a job. It’s because it becomes your first love. And that’s how it is for me.” fazzino.com

WINTER While best known as a ski resort, Aspen, founded in 1879, is equally enjoyable in all seasons. Originally a silver mining town, Aspen fell into decline once that industry died out, and during those fallow years, nature gradually took over, the area became pristine again, the rivers pure, the land verdant. Skiing arrived in the 1930s, and by the 1940s, the snowy slopes surrounding the ghost town became a world-class ski resort. aspensnowmass.com FOUR SKI AREAS Aspen Mountain, also known as Ajax, is my favorite, and the most popular for its scenery. The slopes include steep glades and moguls, as well as a few relatively easy runs.

Snowmass has more than 4,000 vertical feet for skiing, the most in the United States. With 91 trails and 21 chairlifts, there’s something for everyone, and experienced skiers won’t get bored here. Buttermilk is home to the Winter X Games and its daredevil pro skiers, yet this mountain with its gently rolling trails is perfect for beginners or those desiring a more leisurely skiing experience. Aspen Highlands is the most laid-back of the four ski areas and is favored by locals and ski-world insiders for its uncrowded slopes. There are expert terrains and also plenty of easier long runs with spectacular views. SUMMER In the summer you can hike, bike, climb, and go rafting — all with that beautiful Rocky Mountain backdrop. There are lots of festivals in the summer, including the Aspen Music Festival, the Intersect Art Fair, the Food & Wine Classic, and the Aspen Ideas Festival. In town, locals talk about sitting next to Jack Nicholson at the Jerome Bar or seeing Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn, and Kurt Russell dancing at the exclusive Caribou Club. The Colorado ski resort has been favored by show-biz insiders since its earliest days. Mixing it up in town during any season are A-list Hollywood stars, artists, musicians, and Davos-level power brokers. Recently, Prince Harry played in a charity polo match at the Aspen Valley Polo Club. Social Life

BILLIONAIRE MOUNTAIN Many renowned folks have set down roots on Red Mountain, nicknamed Billionaire Mountain, where members of the Bezos and Walton (Walmart) families have homes. The late writer Hunter S. Thompson moved to Aspen in 1968, buying a home with the proceeds from his Hells Angels book. Thompson, who personified gonzo journalism, famously ran for county sheriff in 1970, and some of his memorabilia can be found in town at the Fat City Gallery, formerly known as the Gonzo Gallery.

ACCOMMODATIONS THE J-BAR The J-Bar at the Hotel Jerome served as Thompson’s de facto office, and most days he’d eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner there after stopping at the post office to pick up his mail. A bartender served as a buffer between Thompson and visiting fans; even famous ones like Jimmy Buffet and John Denver had to request a meeting. Thompson once almost killed the actor Bill Murray at the Jerome by duct-taping him to a lounge chair and throwing him into the hotel’s pool. Upon his death in 2005, Thompson’s funeral at the Jerome’s Grand Ballroom was attended by Murray, John Cusack, Benicio Del Toro, and Johnny Depp, the latter footing the $3 million tab for blasting the author’s ashes on Thompson’s Colorado farm from a cannon behind his Aspen home, as Thompson had requested in his will. THE LITTLE NELL HOTEL My favorite hotel is The Little Nell, a five-star spot at the base of Aspen Mountain, with direct gondola access to the slopes. Lively and hip, the Little Nell feels like a modern residence, with contemporary art on the walls and locally quarried stone fireplaces. All the luxurious suites have gas fireplaces, and most have balconies. The ski concierge stores your equipment and warms your boots and even helps you put them on in the morning. It’s the only way, really! thelittlenell.com SocialLifeMagazine.com

HOTEL JEROME The Hotel Jerome was one of Aspen’s first, built in 1889 by Jerome B. Wheeler, a co-owner of Macy’s. The Jerome has had ups and downs throughout the years, fading as Aspen’s silvermining trade dried up, picking up again in the 1930s when ski trails opened, and by the 1950s it was a hangout for the movie stars, writers, and artists who were drawn to the town’s bohemian vibe. Centrally located at the foot of Aspen Mountain, the Jerome is now a completely renovated Auberge property. aubergeresorts.com/hoteljerome ASPEN MOUNTAIN CLUB Atop Aspen Mountain sits the Aspen Mountain Club, the resort’s only ski-out private club. Membership is capped at 350, and a membership medallion is the town’s ultimate status symbol. Members enjoy perks like ski access to the mountain before it opens in the mornings, essentially being alone with the entire mountain. Annual fees are $6,000; however, the initiation fee will set you back $220,000. aspenvalleypoloclub.com CARIBOU CLUB, FOUNDED BY HARLEY BALDWIN The late and sorely missed art dealer and developer Harley Baldwin founded Aspen’s exclusive Caribou Club in 1990 as the city’s first members-only club, bringing to Aspen world-class cuisine. While dining inside the ultra-chic club, diners are seated underneath its charming antlered chandeliers and surrounded by art, including a series by Andy Warhol. If members choose, a small party may also be seated in the Wine Room, where the club houses its 5,000 bottles of wine. The club is now owned by Baldwin’s partner, the gallerist Richard Edwards who also runs the Baldwin Gallery, the best in town. Maintaining Harley’s high standards are his long-time collaborators and friends Billy Stolz and Louis Velasquez, who have been with the club since its inception. caribouclub.com

FESTIVALS

Below is what Dr. Mark has to say about Aspen.

ASPEN FOOD & WINE CLASSIC The Aspen Food & Wine Classic features cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, and panel discussions with renowned chefs and vintners. Some of those appearing from September 10 to September 12 include Martha Stewart; restaurateurs Andrew Zimmern, Bobby Stuckey, Guy Fieri, and Stephanie Izard; and wine experts Mark Oldman and Belinda Chang. classic.foodandwine.com

THE VIBE Aspen is very much about the people — residents and visitors who are passionate about being there. It’s difficult to get to, so its not an overcrowded place, which is part of its magic. It’s a real town that started as a silver-mining hub and evolved into a place with big-city culture, world-class recreation, and a small-town feel. It’s tiny, but you probably have more master sommeliers that live there than anywhere else in the world.

ASPEN MUSIC FESTIVAL The Aspen Music Festival, founded in 1949, brings 400 classical music events to the Rocky Mountains over eight weeks each summer. In 2021 select performances were live-streamed free of charge to a global audience. aspenmusicfestival.com

MY ASPEN: BY KENNETH MARK M.D.

SKI GANGS & SHRINES TO ELVIS & MARILYN I’m a member of the Bell Mountain Buckaroos, one of the oldest ski gangs, founded in 1971 by six guys trying out for jobs as ski-school instructors. To this day, every Sunday they meet to ski. On Aspen Mountain, there are shrines, including ones for John Denver, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and Jerry Garcia. The Buckaroos also have a shrine on Bell Mountain. CATHEDRAL OF ROCKS & SNOW My favorite mountain is Aspen Highlands. A lot of people like Aspen Mountain; I like it, but my favorite mountain is Aspen Highlands. The terrain is some of the best in North America. Highlands, as the locals call it, has maintained a rustic feel. It’s very spiritual; you’re up there surrounded by peaks overlooking the Maroon Bells — two 14,000-foot peaks that are bell-shaped. They’re the most photographed peaks in North America. It’s like you’re in this cathedral of rocks and snow and solemnness. SUMMER: HIKING & BIKING In summer, it’s all about hiking and biking. I like to hike the Ute, named after the Ute tribe, because it’s known for being steep, so it’s a workout. I wouldn’t hike to the top of the mountain the first day in Aspen, because you need to get used to the altitude. One thing I like to do on the first day is rent bicycles from Aspen Bikes and ride along the Rio Grande River. It’s relatively flat, but with enough incline to get a workout, and you’re still at 8,000 feet.

Kenneth Mark, M.D.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HAVEN Aspen is full of interesting people who live life to the fullest. Locals love to say, “Our lives are better than your vacation.” An avid skier and longtime Aspen habitué, Dr. Kenneth Mark is an ambassador for Aspen. “One of my favorite things in the world is to think about Aspen, talk about Aspen . . . and to be in Aspen,” says Dr. Mark, a top dermatologist with offices in the Hamptons, Manhattan, and Aspen. Dr. Mark spends three months a year in the Rocky Mountains haven. kennethmarkmd.com

DINING IN ASPEN Tip: make your restaurant reservations in advance if you’re visiting Aspen in the high season and during peak times, like holidays. TOLLESON’S ROSÉ ENTOURAGE A few years ago, Cloud Nine’s Tolleson launched his own rosé wine label, Entourage, using grapes sustainably grown in the French Riviera. Born in St.-Tropez, launched in Aspen, Entourage rosé has recently become available at select venues in similar resort areas, including Nantucket and the Hamptons. Social Life

THE FRENCH ALPINE BISTRO One of my favorite Aspen restaurants, the French Alpine Bistro, was named one of America’s top five romantic restaurants by the Food Network. The owner Karin Derly, is Austrian, and you feel like you’re in the Alps. Whether you sit in the outdoor chalet or downstairs, the ambience here is unique and second to none, and the food is delicious. I love the rack of lamb, and also the scallops. And for lunch, especially in the summertime, try the moules-frites. frenchalpinebistro.com

The French Alpine Bistro

STEAKHOUSE 316 At Steakhouse 316, my favorite is the prime 38-ounce tomahawk ribeye. Steakhouse 316 also has an amazing wine list, with a great variety, including some real gems that are reasonably priced. The owners Samantha and Craig Cordts-Pearce also own several other great Aspen restaurants, including Wild Fig, Monarch Steakhouse, and CP Burger, and they recently bought the Woody Creek Tavern. steakhouse316.com CACHE CACHE For over 30 years Cache Cache has served up fine French dining under the stewardship of its owner, Joni Larner. I’ve always liked the osso buco, but these days it’s hard for me to go there and not have the rack of lamb. It’s just that good, and it’s local, Colorado lamb. cachecache.com CLOUD NINE ALPINE BISTRO In ski areas in Europe, they build a house on the mountain where skiiers can stop for lunch. In most American ski areas you might as well be at a cafeteria. Cloud Nine is the closest thing to your Austrian ski-hut-on-the-mountain lunch spot, and it’s open only in the winter. An on-mountain restaurant at an elevation over 10,000 feet, you ski to get to it. But non-skiers can get there by snowcat, and if you overindulge, you can grab a ride back down the mountain the same way. Started by an Austrian and now run by Tommy Tolleson, a Swede who has lived in Aspen for over 30 years, Cloud Nine has transformed into a full-on champagne-spraying lunch every day of the week. A typical Wednesday is as wild as a holiday weekend. The cuisine is Swiss-inflected — think fondue, raclette, and steak tartare. It’s the hardest-to-get reservation in town, and Tolleson is by far the most popular guy in town. Everybody is always vying to get a table at Cloud 9, and it’s a very small place. aspensnowmass.com SocialLifeMagazine.com

CAMPO DE FIORI I love Campo, an Italian restaurant that also has a popular bar scene that on some nights morphs into a full-on party. Bartender Dave is the maestro of orchestrating the transition from dining to party. campodefiori.net JOONAS ASPEN This is a new favorite; it just opened over the Fourth of July weekend. They have amazing tapas, and the chocolate mousse is some of the best in town. joonasaspen.com SHOPPING: MAX WOMEN’S CLOTHING My favorite place to shop is Max; it has the most stylish, unique, clothing and accessories for my wife. It’s a guaranteed winner to keep the women in your life happy. maxfashioncolorado.com

AQUALINA RESORT & RESIDENCES By Anthony Giampetruzzi

Named No. 1 Best Resort in the continental United States, in 2021, by U.S. News & World Report, Aqualina also recently cemented itself as the quintessential luxury travel destination in Florida by garnering several coveted back-to-back travel awards. Forbes Travel Guide officially announced that Acqualina has been recognized as a five-star hotel, making it the ninth year the property received the prestigious, ultra-exclusive industry accolade. Meanwhile, it also has been recognized as TripAdvisor’s No. 1 Luxury Beachfront Resort in the United States for the seventh consecutive year, placing it in the top 1% of all hotels worldwide.

W

hen thinking about traveling this fall and winter, Hamptonites will obviously be observing a general rule of thumb: there’s no need to be cutting corners, especially if our journeys take us stateside. And, when discussing where we might be headed stateside, well, there’s another obvious consideration: Florida. So, where do these two thoughts intersect? Aqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach, one of the most exceptional resorts in the United States. Just far enough north from Miami to escape the traffic jams of Ocean Drive and the cacophony of Collins, but not so far north that you can’t make a beeline for The Shops at Bal Harbor (and one of our favorites eateries, Carpaccio’s) Aqualina, located in Sunny Isles Beach, has been the destination for the jet set for nearly two decades. And, with new hotels coming on line every year, and the resulting competition being rather fierce, this grande dame of the beach has held up remarkably well. A particular favorite for international travelers who want gigantic digs and Americans who want both luxury and privacy, the property can’t be beat. The only downside on a recent trip was the frequent hum of heavy machinery. But, it was only mildly distracting and all the less so when one considers that the result will be dozens of luxury residences.

It’s obviously on the Social Life’s shortlist, and below are our top five reasons why.

1

Accommodations — Every room is indeed like a little castle. Naturally, oceanside suites are preferred, and there isn’t one that disappoints. Many include well-stocked kitchens, allowing you to dine in your suite as often as you wish. Which is just fine. With oversized, well-appointed balconies overlooking the sensational horizon, and enormous living areas, there’s plenty of space to spread out. The bathrooms are like a mini-spa, where upscale ESPA products are overflowing at every turn. Oh, and be sure to check out the Bedside Reading Program: six to eight curated downloadable complimentary ebooks or audiobooks as gifts to Acqualina’s hotel guests. This service will save you a few pounds in your carry-on. Aqualina Spa by ESPA — Set against the tranquil ocean and stunning white sands, Acqualina Spa by ESPA is not only an indulgent retreat for relaxation and rejuvenation, but is also one of the best of in the country.

FOOD & WINE

SEASONAL OPTIONS By Sharon Roth

H

ere are a few fun seasonal options, starting with the simplest. All of these serve one, except the first, where you can just proportion ingredients to taste:

The Bridgehampton Mezcal Before we begin, let’s address the all-important question: What exactly is mezcal? Mezcal is a smoky liquor made from the juice of roasted agave plants, as is tequila, but (perfect for our theme today) with a much smokier, earthier flavor and aroma. Fun fact: Mezcal is recognized as an Appellation of Origin in Mexico, much like Champagne or Cognac is in France.

The Sag Harbor Spice This one also calls for expert muddling. So basically, get hold of a cocktail muddler (or just use any handle of a wooden utensil) and mush away until you have a nice, zesty pulp. That’s all there is to it. For this spicy mezcal margarita, muddle limes, cucumber, jalapeños, and cilantro.

Now that we have established that, here we go: Ingredients: Mezcal Plenty of limes Natural agave nectar Basil leaves Ice Optional salt for the rim of the glass (Try a flavored salt, just for fun.) Couldn’t be easier: Place basil leaves and lime wedges in a cocktail shaker. Muddle them well (see below for how to muddle well). Add ice, mezcal, lime juice, and agave, and shake away.

The Montauk Peach Smash Ingredients: 1 peach 1 tsp. 100% pure Canadian maple syrup 2 oz. smoked maple bourbon (Knob Creek is a good option.)

Ingredients: 3 slices cucumber 2 slices jalapeño pepper 1 lime (quartered) 3 sprigs cilantro 2 oz. silver tequila 2 oz. St-Germain elderflower liqueur 2 oz. mezcal Black sea salt Long, thin cucumber slices (Ok, that’s actually quite specific for a garnish, so if that’s not your particular cucumber aesthetic, feel free to fashion them any way you like!)

Coat peach with maple syrup and grill or broil with canola oil (5 miutes for grill, 2 minutes for broil) Add ice cubes to shaker with grilled peach half, thyme sprig, bitters, and bourbon. Shake and pour over ice. Top with dry ginger beer, fresh lemon juice, and soda water. Stir and enjoy.

Dip lime quarters into sea salt. Put cucumber slices, jalapeño slices, salted lime quarters, and cilantro sprigs into cocktail shaker and muddle. Fill shaker with crushed ice and add tequila, St-Germain, and mezcal. Cover shaker and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain concoction over crushed ice and serve.

As summer winds down and fall arrives, get a good fire going, curl up and raise your smoky cocktail of choice to a happy, healthy, and ambrosial rest of 2021!

3 dashes Angostura bitters 1 sprig fresh thyme 2 oz. non-alcoholic spicy ginger beer (Great Jamaican is a good option.) ½ oz fresh lemon juice 1 oz soda water

GUERNSEY ’S ARLAN ETTINGER AUCTION WORLD REVOLUTIONARY By Bennett Marcus

Arlan Ettinger

Princess Diana’s Pearl and Diamond Necklace

EXTRAORDINARY SALES Back in the 1970s, Guernsey’s founder, Arlan Ettinger, applied his formidable marketing skills to the staid auction business, revolutionizing the industry. At the time, global players like Sotheby’s and Christie’s concentrated on antiques and fine art that they advertised in publications like the New York Times, and local auctioneers sold common objects from estates and such that they promoted regionally. Ettinger and his wife, Barbara Mintz, both advertising executives, were already avid collectors of things like American folk art, cars of the 1950s, and WPA artwork, areas that were gaining popularity but largely ignored by the auction world. So in 1975 the couple launched Guernsey’s to fill a niche, and have built it into one of the top independent auction houses in the United States, pulling in top dollar at some of modern history’s most extraordinary sales.

ELVIS, JFK, DUKE ELLINGTON & PRINCESS DIANA “We did all three of the John F. Kennedy auctions and sold the Franklin Roosevelt archive. We sold Princess Diana’s jewelry, the only such sale that’s ever taken place,” says Ettinger. They also handled the Graceland auction for the family of Elvis Presley, as well as auctions for the Beatles, Dick Clark, Mickey Mantle, and Duke Ellington. At Lincoln Center, Guernsey’s conducted auctions of jazz luminaries like John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk.

AUCTIONS WITH A STORY In the early 1980s a man desperate to raise $30,000 for his daughter’s hospital bills asked them to sell wooden carousel horses from defunct merry-go-rounds, and that became Guernsey’s breakthrough. Ettinger found the beautifully carved horses appealing, and NBC’s Today show took an interest, inviting him to bring on a few during a broadcast. “It is believed now that that was the very first time any auction — any auction, not of Picassos or other terribly valuable things, but any auction — was ever featured on an American network television show,” Ettinger says. The auction brought in $1 million. “One million dollars for these things that were being thrown out was an eye-opener, to say the least,” he says. “Our work with the media to make these stories big deals is not just about reaching out to known collectors in any field; it’s getting the whole world involved.” Social Life

doors that were logically worthless?” It turned out to be an enormously popular event, garnering $573,000. “We held the auction in adjoining art galleries in Chelsea — the one gallery wasn’t big enough to handle the crowd. It was a packed house, with cheering; it couldn’t have been a happier event.” ROSA PARKS ARCHIVE In recent years, Guernsey’s handled the sale of the complete archive of the civil rights activist Rosa Parks, which Ettinger believes is “the most important thing he has ever done.”

THE SMITHSONIAN From that moment on carousel horses became treasured items and are now preserved in museums like the Smithsonian. “So the auction was a catalyst to bring recognition to something from our national heritage.” That legacy has continued to the present day, and Guernsey’s continues to conduct auctions of unusual lots that tell compelling stories. $3 MILLION BASEBALL Guernsey’s has also produced far-ranging auctions, such as the sale of the ocean liner SS United States (the world’s largest auction), the landmark Cold War auction of art from the Soviet Union, and the unprecedented auction of 200,000 pre-Castro Cuban cigars. Among the many record prices Guernsey’s has achieved were $3.5 million for Jerry Garcia’s guitar and $3 million for Mark McGuire’s baseball. CHELSEA HOTEL DOORS: Jack Kerouac, Jackson Pollock & Janis Joplin A few years ago, a homeless man saved 52 room doors that were piled on the sidewalk outside the legendary Chelsea Hotel in New York — home to artists and writers through the years — which was undergoing renovations. “These are seven-foot tall, heavy wooden doors, peeling paint, no value, worth zero,” says Ettinger. The man then spent a year in the public library reading through the memoirs of famous people who had lived at the Chelsea, identifying 22 room numbers that had housed renowned artists like Jackson Pollock, Jack Kerouac, Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan. Andy Warhol shot Chelsea Girls in Edie Sedgewick’s room. “I didn’t know it at the time, but he had already knocked on the doors of other auction houses, all of which showed him the door,” quips Ettinger. “Was this crazy? Would we consider selling these SocialLifeMagazine.com

After Parks’s death, a feud developed over her will, and the court brought in Guernsey’s to take an inventory of her possessions and find a permanent home for them. “We discovered she was a pack rat in the nicest sense of the word; she had saved everything,” says Ettinger. “It showed through her writings what had previously been unknown, that she was hardly just a little lady who one day impulsively didn’t give up her seat on a bus. She was sort of mapping out a strategy, starting at around age 12, determined to make a difference and rid the world of some of the injustice that she saw around her.” LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Many institutions desperately wanted the collection, but none offered a reasonable price for it. Ettinger finally turned to the media, saying the archive should be available to the public. The AP picked up the story, and a private foundation acquired the archive, and gifted it to the Library of Congress. Only months after the gift was made, Ettinger was listening to a National Public Radio interview with the new head librarian of the Library of Congress. Asked what she considered the most important in its vast collection of over 120 million items, her answer was the Rosa Parks archive that had just been given to them. “So, pretty goosebump-raising when one realizes that it was in our possession for years and years. Our job was to safeguard it, which is not what one thinks of normally as being the role of an auction house. But it was a role that we took on for sure,” Ettinger says. These and many others are interesting, newsworthy, and unprecedented experiences, Ettinger says. “A sale of a work by Picasso is certainly exciting and of great importance. But even that is sort of normal, to be expected during the auction process. Whereas these stories that we’ve tried to convey, each one of them, I think, is something different and without precedent.” Guernsey’s guernseys.com

DEBRA & ERIKA WASSER LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER: ENTREPRENEUR EDITION By Matthew Berritt

D

ebra Wasser is the founder of Reunited Beauty, a cosmetic brand focused on plump, healthy lip solutions. Erika Wasser, her daughter, is the founder and CEO of Glam&Go, the co-founder of Prospr At Work. What’s been your proudest moment during each other’s entrepreneurial journey? Debra Wasser: Erika has a tremendous work ethic that I admire. She identifies problems, finds solutions, and executes. Erika Wasser: Seeing how resilient she is in the face of adversity. Starting a lip gloss company — and then we we’re all in masks. So many people would have given up, but she didn’t. What’s your fave reunited shade? DW: Definitely 43 Bitch is Back. It has a perfect rose gold shimmer that is long-lasting. After 2020, it seemed like an appropriate sentiment too. We have a new filter on our website and Instagram that allows you to virtually try on all 15 shades! EW: I love Get Down Tonight. This shade has just enough deep pink and sparkle for me, and as for the name . . . here’s hoping. You’re both so fashionable. Who are your fave designers? DW: Michael Kors, who helped to launch Reunited Beauty, is my favorite all-time designer. Hands down. Then there’s always room for Versace. EW: What she said above. My favorite place to shop is in her closet. Debra, you launched a thriving cosmetic brand. Erika, you founded Glam&Go and, now, co-founded a tech solution that is revolutionizing the way companies manage their workforces. What inspires each of you to create and innovate? DW: Necessity. I couldn’t find what I was looking for in lip gloss. I wanted a long-lasting, hydrating, and plumping gloss free of paraben, sulfates, gluten, phthalates, and of course, not tested on animals. I also insisted it was made in the USA. EW: Both businesses were started from solving my own problems. Glam&Go was launched from wanting to get my hair done

at the gym. Prospr is everything I learned and needed in scaling Glam&Go to 14 locations and nearly 100 employees. Anyone who’s managed people, and specifically customer-facing frontline teams, knows the struggle is real, but the aha moment for Prospr came from better understanding the employees’ needs and how they could be most successful. We now support the likes of Dunkin’ and the Orlando Convention Center and businesses like Ora Space in the Bridgehampton Barn. It feels great to know all the mistakes I made myself weren’t in vain. What’s next — and will we ever see a Debra-Erika collaboration? DW: Her innovation will definitely help me manage my business. Fingers crossed I get the “friends & family” discount. EW: When Reunited Beauty launches retail stores, we'll see about the discount. Social Life

THOMAS DONOHOE DIGITAL MARKETING GURU & CMO By Bennett Marcus

T

he past year has been full of surprises for Thomas Donohoe, a best-selling author and nationally recognized expert in digital marketing. In April, Donohoe was named chief marketing officer for Cuisine Solutions, the global leader in pioneering the sous vide cooking technique. A serial entrepreneur, Donohoe had also just sold his company, Level Agency, intending to take some time off to spend time with his family. But this exciting, newly created position derailed those plans. “I have been an entrepreneur for over a decade, and I was planning on taking a long summer break and spending time with my daughters,” Donohoe says. The day after selling his marketing agency, Felipe Hasselmann, Cuisine Solutions’ CEO and a longtime friend, called and asked, “How about you don’t take a vacation and come work with me instead?”

Donohoe was familiar with the company, having worked with it as a client, and the opportunity was too good to pass up. “I already loved what they’ve done, where they’re going, and their products. And frankly, I am one of the best at what I do, and it would be difficult for my friend, who’s an amazing CEO and running an amazing company, to find a better CMO option.” SOUS VIDE Cuisine Solutions, the pioneer in the sous vide slow-cooking technique, is one of the biggest companies you’ve never heard of whose products you interact with daily. Its foods are used in over 22,000 restaurants globally, from Michelin-starred dining temples to Starbucks, and at over 6,000 retailers, as well as by the world’s top hotels and airlines. supplies major institutional entities, including healthcare facilities, cruise ships, schools, and the military. The company has massive manufacturing plants and test kitchens in the United States, France, the Middle East, and Thailand. THOMAS KELLER: THE FRENCH LAUNDRY Even the chef Thomas Keller of the French Laundry partners with Cuisine Solutions, something he mentions in his latest book. “The clients are the best of the best, and my job as chief marketing officer is to share those partnerships with other prospective partners and clients around the world,” says Donohoe. THE DELTA FORCE, SEAL TEAM 6 OF THE CULINARY WORLD Since joining the company full time, Donohoe has often found himself astounded at the innovation he’s witnessed. One division, the Culinary Research & Education Academy (CREA), consists of food scientists. “They invent new foods,” he says. “It’s crazy, and it’s wonderful. They do what we would call R&D.” This division also trains other chefs in the sous vide method. Many, many Michelin-starred restaurants and hundreds of other elite restaurants in America send their new apprentices and sous chefs to this team for training. Donohoe describes it as the “black-ops, Delta Force, SEAL Team 6 of the culinary world,” a part of the company’s culture with a focus on quality, ingenuity, and innovation. THE CHEFS He’s also amazed at how many of the thousands of employees in executive positions throughout Cuisine Solutions are classically trained chefs. “They’re not businesspeople; they’re not accountants or salespeople or marketers. They’re chefs. They put these people in charge of big things, and so what happens is this giant company still cares about how good the food is. And that’s the reason this company is the best and will be in ten years; it’s in their DNA.” mycuisinesolutions.com BEST-SELLING BOOK Donohoe expects to publish an updated version of his 2019 best-selling book, The CEO’s Digital Marketing Playbook, which received critical acclaim. Its success, he believes, is in offering concrete solutions while other marketing books just talk about strategy in a general way. “Anybody that wants to turn marketing into a customer and profit-generating activity wants to read something and then know what to do. You want to say, Great, I’ve got seven things to do this week, and if I do those seven things correctly, I’ll probably make more money. Well, I wrote the book that has that.” He plans updates as the industry evolves. “Google is still the dominant player. Facebook and Instagram are still the SocialLifeMagazine.com

dominant players in their respective spaces, but in five years, absolutely anything can happen.” PILOT’S LICENSE JUST IN TIME In another surprise this year, Donohoe obtained his pilot’s license, a lifelong dream, and bought his plane, a Cirrus SR22. His timing was perfect; he lives in Charleston, South Carolina, and travels to the Cuisine Solutions headquarters in Sterling, Virginia, a few times each month, flying himself as often as possible since the airlines are currently in such disarray. “Commercial air travel, in my experience within the past few months, has been a borderline dumpster fire, to say nothing of how individuals and customers are behaving on airplanes. I had never seen a fight on an airplane, and I’ve seen two in the last four months! My goodness, that’s just ridiculous!” CHILDREN, PHOTOGRAPHY, ONETIME PATRICK McMULLAN ASSISTANT In his spare time, Donohoe devotes his energy to his two daughters, ages 6 and 8. “They are my north, my south, my east, my west. They’re perfect.” Donohue fell in love with photography when in his teens. While working in New York as a consultant in digital advertising during its infancy back in the early 2000s, Donohoe took a short career detour to follow his passion, venturing into photography professionally as an assistant to the legendary Patrick McMullan. “That was the most fun I’ve ever had, and I love this man to this day,” he says. “I love photography. I still do it. I’ve had some gallery pieces, but I do it primarily for my enjoyment. I was good, but I was never great, and there is no worse place to be good versus great than New York City. CAROLE CRIST FORMER FIRST LADY OF FLORIDA By Rodney Sparrow POWER WOMEN — HAVING IMPACT Carole Crist sees her role in society as one of public benefit. After an esteemed career in private business and public life, it’s now all about how and whom she can help. While many know Carole Crist as the former First Lady of Florida, she is equally known in philanthropic circles as a champion for those in need. Her personal and professional experiences in public and private life have honed her understanding of the impoverished and the underserved, giving her a unique perspective. GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL Crist is a native New Yorker who grew up in Roslyn, New York, but now calls Fisher Island, Florida, home. After earning a degree from Georgetown University Business School, she spent 25 years heading up her family’s 100-year-old Halloween company, and she built a global private jet business, among her various corporate ventures. IMPACT INVESTING This path has led Crist into the world of impact investing, which is purpose- and mission-driven. People invest money, typically in the technology space, to advance a social agenda and expand opportunity for those in need. In particular, developing disruptive technologies not only shakes things up, it brings positive 21st-century solutions to the problems facing society today, and also generates outsized returns to investors. Impact investing is, to borrow a quote from President John F. Kennedy, “the rising tide that lifts all boats.” CAPITAL WITH A CONSCIENCE And, if impact investing is the rising tide, then Carole Crist is a wave-maker. Crist is the founder of CLC Global Advisors,

a firm that works alongside select clients and philanthropic organizations whose shared objective is to build businesses that can have significant impact around the world. Coining the phrase “capital with a conscience,” Crist and fellow business leaders have made waves in various industries. “Investors have myriad choices for how to allocate human and financial capital. Why not deploy it with a purpose into ventures that have a positive impact on people’s lives? It is classic doing well by doing good,” she says. WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP Philanthropy is a top priority for Crist, giving her time, energy, and resources to many charitable organizations. However, her foremost passion today is the advancement of women in business. She emphasizes a shocking statistic: only 2% of venture capital dollars go to companies founded by women. This is a tremendous disparity she hopes to rectify by both raising awareness and actively engaging in female startups. It is worth noting, research shows that businesses with women founders tend to have a higher rate of success. “Perhaps we have more to prove,” she says. Crist is the mother of two grown daughters in addition to having been a businesswoman for decades. “I see elevating women as my highest calling,” she says. “My great joy is mentoring women on how to build and grow a business and fostering ventures led by women.” Crist believes we must do all we can to support women in business and fuel their success. “By helping women break into the technology field and the venture capital realm, I know that our world will be more equitable, inclusive, and successful for generations to come.” CLC Global Advisors clcglobaladvisors.com Social Life

ERICA LEE CEO OF MARQUIS WHO’S WHO By Jessica LaVopa

E

rica Lee, the recently appointed CEO of Marquis Who’s Who, the world’s leading and wide-ranging biographical publisher, spent her undergraduate years as an anthropology major, and today people are still her main interest. Although Lee started college as a pre-med student at Yale, she did so at her parents’ request. But she switched her major to anthropology when she decided to follow her own passion. “I enjoy researching people and researching how we got to where we are. I want to know what makes us human,” said Lee. And that is what Marquis Who’s Who is all about: documenting the achievements of renowned men and women, so they can gain the recognition and exposure they deserve. As the first female CEO of Marquis Who’s Who, Lee aims to bring the company into the digital age with personal branding. “My past has prepared me for what I’m doing today. It set the ground for researching, understanding evolution, and especially understanding the transformation of a person,” said Lee. THE DIGITAL AGE OF MARQUIS WHO’S WHO When Lee first started at Marquis Who’s Who in 2016, as the chief operating officer, she was the driving force behind personal branding at the company. Founded in 1898, the company’s first publication was Who’s Who in America. Today Marquis publishes fourteen biographical series that have a niche focus — e.g. by geographical location or occupation, and one about outstanding women. It also publishes two historical series about who once was who. “We feature the crème de la crème in their respective fields from around the world,” said Lee. Now Marquis’s listees have access to a one-stop-shop personal branding service that promotes and streamlines information about them. The services include website creation, press release distribution, newsletters, and interview opportunities with major newspapers and magazines like the Wall Street Journal and Forbes, and media celebrities like the talk show host and attorney Star Jones. “What makes us different from everyone else is that our listees are telling their stories in their own words. They are taking hold of their legacy, putting out the meaningful information that will be the most impactful for years to come,” said Lee. SocialLifeMagazine.com

WHAT’S NEXT FOR MARQUIS WHO’S WHO Currently, Lee is working on rebranding the organization to include outreach programs; more accessible information via a publicly searchable database; and the Marquis Makers List, a list of roughly 50 experts who are innovators and change-makers. Marquis Who’s Who is working toward ways to have its listees be speakers at events and ways to help them gain clientele from exposure. “Our goal is to highlight individuals and home in on what makes them stand out from the crowd,” said Lee. “Much like our own motto, Marquis is often imitated, but never duplicated.” Marquis Who’s Who marquiswhoswho.com

The flagship sushi restaurant opened in NoHo in January 2020 right before the world turned upside down. Despite that, the restaurateur Garry Kanfer not only persisted but expanded, opening additional Kissaki locations on the UWS; Long Island City; and Greenwich, Connecticut.
