Nothing quite compares to a Hamptons summer. I would say the same goes for autumn. Come September, the Hamptons transforms into a different but equally vibrant version of itself. Events continue without pause, often focusing on a creative community that may not shine as brightly in beach-going months as it deserves. October brings the annual Hamptons International Film Festival, where a mix of established and emerging artists show us their talents. The festival is a highly enjoyable experience. Of course, there are the typical fall activities — apple picking, playing a crisp round at Montauk Downs, or riding your bike through the less traveled Hamptons roads. But, out here, everything seems a little more special. Maybe it’s because eating a freshly picked apple while walking on a sun-drenched beach can’t be beat. In November and December, the Hamptons is still a great place to spend time with family for the holidays. Back in the city, Fashion Week is right around the corner. Since fashion informs Hamptons culture in such a pivotal way, catching a show at Lincoln Center will always keep you in the know. Not to mention, nobody can venture into the trenches of Fashion Week without running into a summer friend. Justin Mitchell

L E T T E R F R OM T H E E D I T O R - I N - C H I E F

I began the Hamptons season with a wish that all of you experience the East End with heightened senses. I hope each and every one of you have enjoyed the season with intensity and gratitude. Personally the way I achieved this was by pushing myself to try new things by exploring life outside my familiar Hamptons routine. There are some amazing individuals responsible for getting me to try new things this summer and I have to say those two new friends have been a very large part of what made this summer fantastic. Thank you Michelle and Robert. Moving through life with gratitude has truly changed me by making me much more present. In fact, from Cicero to Ferris Bueller, many have acknowledged the importance of gratitude. Cicero said that thankfulness is supremely important by stating, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues,

but the parent of all others.” And who doesn’t know the iconic line from Ferris Bueller’s Day off ? Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it. Now think about it, Ferris Beuller isn’t saying to pause and complain about someone’s driving or fret over goals or judge others. He is saying to stop and feel grateful for every little thing because that is the only way you can really enjoy life. Stop and be thankful. Push the negativity out even for a moment and list all the good things or you may miss it. Personally, I’m the most thankful for the love of my life, my husband. I know a thousand Instagram Memes say this but life truly is at its most wonderful when shared with your best friend. Whether it’s your husband, wife, life partner, best friend, or a cherished family member that’s your partner in crime, I think it’s always fun to celebrate them with a note of sweet words, a memory, surprise homemade cookies, or the list of ways to express gratitude can go on and on. Giving back is a wonderful and fulfilling way to express gratitude. Recently, a young woman reached out to me about her 7 month puppy that broke its back. After speaking to technicians about the case at Sarasota Companion Animal Neurology and confirming this is a real girl who loves her puppy and needs help, I donated to gofundme.com/saveerika (gofundme.com/2jyjutak). I hope some of you take the time to help out. Every little bit counts! This adorable puppy can recover given the proper care. It’s not easy to accept that we are at the tail end of summer. I don’t know about you but I do very much enjoy hot August days. It reminds me of my mother’s country, Venezuela, which is right on the equator. A cool ginger spiced drink on a particularly hot day always feels good to me. I’m also really looking forward to the fall. From apple picking to watching the leaves turn sunset colors, I cannot wait to enjoy every season of the Hamptons. Wishing all my readers good health and happy adventures! All good things to come,

Devorah Rose

LJ Cross: Lisa Jackson By Cecilia Morales

Diamonds for the Beach The jewelry designer Lisa Jackson has launched an edgy new line dubbed “Diamonds for the Beach.” The collection is available at Copious Row in Sag Harbor and Greenwich, Connecticut; Saks Fifth Avenue; and Jackson’s boutique at 994 Madison Avenue. Jackson hopes to challenge the way people look at fine jewelry. “People are not that comfortable with going outside the box and wearing fine jewelry and living with it,” she said. “I have an antithetical way of looking at this.” While the collection itself is made with precious materials, Jackson doesn’t want her customers to be shy about what they wear.“For my first collection for the line I chose to work in rose gold and white gold with white and champagne diamonds,” said Jackson. “Even though I’m working with real gemstones, it’s not jewelry for the safe. I see it with white T-shirts, jeans, into night with an organza slip dress, and over your favorite caftan. It’s all about just throwing it on and feeling comfortable and not treating it as precious.”

brother Steven, who consistently wore multiple crosses. Jackson’s signature minimalist style and eclectic design sense informs her bold statements and the unique look of each piece. Designed with the highestquality gemstones, each piece reflects modernity while embracing timeless spirituality.

Monogrammed Accessories In addition to her jewelry, Jackson’s most popular lifestyle items are her handpainted monogrammed accessories, which stem from her love of text paintings. “I’m a huge fan of text paintings, so we started handpainting messages on T-shirts and totes in the store,” she said. After a while, however, Jackson had an idea. “My besties call me LJ and I sign everything LJ,” she said. “I thought,” Oh that’s a little bit of a signature, why don’t I just paint an LJ and put it on the bag, and once I did that people were, like, ‘I want one of those.’ ” LJ has now expanded its monogram collection to pretty much anything you can paint on and, of course, you can have your initials on eveything. “Now we have a small off-site artists’ studio with a couple of painters who come in because the program is just so big,” said Jackson. “First came a monogram in paint and then came the gemstones. The gemstone initials were new when Allison Janney bought the A. Fortnately, we just so happened to have an A. It was white gold with white diamonds, and it was a serendipitous kind of thing.”

Celebrity Clientele Tory Burch, Vera Wang, Renée Zellweger, Michael J. Fox, and the West Wing star Allison Janney have all turned to designer Lisa Jackson for her unique design aesthetic. With an eye for edgy design and the drive to make her visions come to life, Jackson has always created beauty. Beginning her career as a private art and antiques consultant, she traveled the globe in search of exceptional art and rare antiques before entering the world of interior design. A few years back, Jackson took a step in a new direction when she launched LJ Cross, a fashion-forward line of crosses featuring innovative designs and gemstones. She began designing crosses as a tribute to her late

Pop of Color Coming up is a pop of color in her designs. “For the first time, I’m now working in color for my jewelry,” she said. “For my fall program I’m using cornelian and fire opals. I’m just having fun playing with color. I love mixing colors so it’s given me a chance to have this new palette and have a whole new presentation of what we do. It’s really fun and magical. Think about chocolate brown diamonds, sapphires, and peridot in the same piece. Whether it’s an ID bracelet or a bangle embedded in rose gold, we’re still using our same cobblestone technique, but changing up the colors a lot.” ljcrossnny.com Social Life

Couture Designer Jackie Rogers Translates an Extraordinary Life into Extraordinary Fashion By Elizabeth Darwen

T

he fashion designer Jackie Rogers continues to inspire with her bold designs and unexpected fabric selections. Many of Rogers’ collections are inspired by her friendship with some of the world’s most influential people and her time spent in some of the most fascinating cities in the world. Rogers has truly lived a life of inspiration — she has been a big-band singer, a Hollywood starlet, a denizen of Rome’s la dolce vita in the company of princes and magnates, a muse for Federico Fellini, Coco Chanel’s favored mannequin, and a successful New York model. Her spring 2016 collection, for example, paid homage to the works of famed artist Salvador Dali, with whom she established a friendship when she lived in Paris. Rogers dresses some of the most recognized women in entertainment, politics, and finance; the late Jackie Kennedy Onassis was on Rogers’ long client list. Rogers utilizes materials other designers steer away from to create unique, timeless fashions. From blouses to pants to beautiful gowns, each piece is handcrafted in her New York showroom to ensure the quality of each individual piece. When you enter a room where someone is wearing a Jackie Rogers’ creation, the beauty and craftsmanship of her design is unmistakable. She uses sewing techniques she perfected while working with Coco Chanel in her Paris couture studio. It is her zest for both life and the experiences it offers that gives Jackie Rogers her extraordinarily sophisticated point of view, which translates into designs that make a statement of sophistication and

style with every impeccably tailored piece. Rogers has become known for her burlap jackets, which she tailors to the body, creating beautifully structured designs. These often feature a perfectly paired color-duo, giving the garment a striking, bold, and modern look. Some of the most extraordinary experiences on Rogers’ resume include her past as a runway model for the most renowned couturiers of Rome, including Simonetta and Fabiani, and her role in Fellini’s cult classic 8 ½, where she starred opposite Marcello Mastroianni. But most impressive of all, is her time working at the House of Chanel, where she absorbed the immaculate style and techniques of her mentor. Said Rogers, “It was the greatest experience of my life. I never realized what an effect she had on me.” The effect was to prove lasting, and Rogers became a designer on her return to New York. Rogers is often referred to as “America’s Coco Chanel,” and she likes to say, “I don’t believe in fashion, I believe in style,” and this motto is reflected throughout her collections, which are made with the timeless elegance that is the signature of the Jackie Rogers brand. jackierogers.com Social Life

Inspiration Through Beauty Mikelle’ s Jewelry Embodies Meaning & Symbolism & Elegance By Carolina Cohen

M

ikelle Terson, the founder of Mikelle Design, creates jewelry that embodies an inimitable spirit that pleases the soul and brings deeper meaning into your everyday fashion choices. Her personal appreciation for beauty, expressed in her jewelry designs, began as a child and has developed over the course of a personal journey wide and wending. Mikelle’s designs capture an exotic, mysterious, ancient spirit that resonates in her pendants and stones from across the globe. The collection offers a full spectrum of jewelry, ranging from casual fun jewelry to high-end antique and fine jewelry. Social Life sat down with Mikelle to learn more about her art and what drives her creativity. What is the inspiration behind your jewelry designs? I’ve been teaching yoga for many years now and was blessed to travel the world with some of my private clients. I love seeing how other cultures express themselves through art and especially color. Even in the poorest villages of India there is such beauty in the way the women’s saris hang drying in the sun. I began collecting vintage and antique pieces during my journeys and would rework them when I got home, combining elements from different cultures within the same piece. People started buying them off my neck and that’s how my design business started. I never really planned on it. I believe strongly in the power of beauty to uplift and inspire. Can you give us examples of these types of pieces? I have a ring that is cast from a 600 BCE coin from the kingdom of the Buddha’s father. When I wear it, I feel like I’m connecting to the people of that time period. There is energy, wisdom, and history contained within it. Symbols carry a potent energy as well. I use a lot of goddess images in my jewelry, as I feel they remind women of how powerful and wonderful we are. Jewelry carries story and memory and self-expression. I choose stones and components that I feel emanate positive energy.

Talk to us about the philosophy behind your designs? My personal philosophy, which stems from my yoga background, is that we are all reflections of the divine and that we are here to celebrate that, live in joy, and be our big shiny selves. I believe jewelry enhances and helps bring out a woman’s innate beauty. Beauty empowers. Beauty is medicine, and I believe we can use it to help heal the world. Our “Happy Planet” collection gives a portion of proceeds to help elephants (which many do not realize are on the edge of extinction) and various other causes. We recently created a “Happy Horse” collection with portions going to the ASPCA equine program. I read on your website that you graduated from Cornell University with a degree in biology. So, science versus art. What comes to mind? Look at the beauty inside a cell or the way a muscle works. Science is the process of understanding its wonder, breaking it down, finding the rules and principles that govern it, whereas art is about expressing and sharing the wonder. For me, art comes from a pre-verbal place; it has its own language of emotion and energy and placement. Maybe you could say science tries to figure out the mystery and art dances with it, but both require an intimacy with what is unseen.

Mikelle’s designs have been sold at ABC Home, the Rubin Museum, and the Naked Egg Gallery in New York. You can see her collection during the Hampton Classic in Bridgehampton at the Boutique Garden from August 28 to September 4, and at Harborfest in Sag Harbor on September 10 and 11. mikelledesign.com

Morphew a Luxury Vintage Archive By Cecilia Morales

SECRET OF THE STARS Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Miley Cyrus, and Kim Kardashian are a few of the fashionistas fawning over Morphew, an archive of luxury vintage fashion in the Garment District and online. The Morphew brand, according to the co-founders Bridgette Morphew and Jason Lyon, strives to connect the past and the future of style through rich historical concepts.

Alexander McQueen, Dior, and Chanel

Bridgette Morphew

Morphew began life as an archival source of inspiration for designers, including the late Alexander McQueen. “We found this niche in the fashion industry where we were consulting and inspiring fashion designers with vintage concepts,” explains Bridgette. The rare pieces presented by Morphew, which are maintained in perfect condition, come from design houses such as Dior and Chanel. Morphew even carries lace gowns from the Victorian era. Realizing there was an increasing demand for high-end vintage fashion from interested shoppers, Morphew opened a showroom. Located on West 37th Street, it is a popular place for in-the-know stylists, designers, fashion enthusiasts, and luxury shoppers.

Morphew Lab Boasting an archive of over 6,000 vintage prints, Bridgette states, “Our archive is a library for designers who make us the second step in their design process. The niche pieces and the library we’ve created is vintage; everything here is very rare.” With direct access to such a comprehensive archive, the team decided they had another option to explore — reclaimed and re-done vintage. This led to the creation of Morphew Lab, where vintage fashion, contextual history, future trends, and technology meet, and where consumers can purchase vintage-inspired, reconstructed pieces that are at once forward-thinking and of another time. “We know that these are important pieces of history,” said Jason, “and due to the amazing feedback we have always received, the retail market found us. It was only then that we launched as a whole separate retail venture. Our greatest compliment is when a shopper asks, ‘Is this old?’ because it reads so current,” said Jason. “You can say Valentino’s doing that and so is Cos, Zara, and Top Shop, and it’s because we sold it to them.” Both Bridgette and Jason pride themselves on knowing trends years in advance and keeping their vintage pieces in line with what’s current, which, as Jason states, “makes us very different from a lot of vintage dealers who only work with a certain era or idea.”

Much like fashion itself, the Morphew brand has grown and expanded. “Five years ago, everything we were buying was late ’70s, early ’80s — Japanese minimalist designer pieces like Issey Miyake and Comme des Garçons — and we love that stuff, but we have moved towards a different vibe because that’s what happening in fashion.” They’ve displayed this transition in Art Southampton, where they showcased their collection at the McNeill Art Group booth.

Haute Couture Bridgette and Jason agree that their favorite leading lady is a shopper who knows what she wants and pushes labels aside. “They say you can buy fashion but you can’t buy style,” says Jason. “Our consumer is a woman who knows and loves style. She’s a fashionable woman, but she’s not a fashion buyer. To her, a label doesn’t matter.” This idea is refreshing, since the desire to own a piece from a high-end label is not uncommon. At Morphew however, designer labels don’t lead the conversation. As Jason says, “We sell designs first, and designers second.” morphewconcept.com 212.564.4331 (Open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.) Social Life

Sun Damage Reversal Summering in the Hamptons may lead to a gorgeous sun-kissed glow, but the effects of the sun are not always welcomed. Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause sun damage to the skin in the form of sun spots not only on the face, but also commonly on the back of hands. I consulted with a leading Manhattan dermatologist, Dr. Dennis Gross, to discuss the steps that can be taken to treat sun damage.

Are there any skincare products that you’d recommend to help with sun spots on the hands? In addition to in-office treatments, using products at home can help improve and accelerate results. The Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare alpha beta daily peel can be used on both face and body. I’ve heard several of my patients note it’s made a huge difference on the back of hands, which are often overlooked. After the face, what areas of the body get the most sun damage? I typically see the most sun damage on the chest, neck, and hands. These are the most sun exposed and usually overlooked areas after the face — all year round. How can sun damage be reversed at your office? In my office we treat sun damage and sun spots with the GentleMax Alexandrite laser. This laser allows for precise targeting of dark spots, hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and discoloration. The powerful treatment eliminates melanin from the surface of the skin for improved clarity, even tone, and texture. Skin appears immediately clearer with improved results over one week’s time. This treatment can be performed on the face and body over a series of treatments, but results can be seen after just one visit. The cost per treatment ranges from $400 to $1,200.

How can we better take care of our hands this autumn? It’s not common practice to apply sunscreen daily to the back of hands, but it can help avoid acceleration of sun spots and wrinkles. Really, you can treat your hands much in the same way you treat your face with active ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, and SPF. Dennis Gross, M.D., is a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon, who has been in practice for 25 years. He is the founder of Dr. Dennis Gross Dermatology and the creator of the award-winning Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare. 900 Fifth Avenue, 212.725.4555

Don’t Let Bunions Force You to Run Away from Runway Fashion By Madison Cole

T

he breeze is still warm. The days are still long. The jitney is still full. But, let’s face it: summer is winding down. Soon enough, we’ll be grabbing cardigans, watching the moon rise over happy hour and getting reacquainted with the idea of spending weekends in the city. Thankfully, one September institution makes it easier to leave summer behind: Fashion Week. Each year, we see the shows, scan the front rows, and hit the afterparties with squads in tow. And if we can count on Fashion Week for anything — besides branded swag and celeb cameos — it’s the sight of high (and highly-covetable) heels coming down the runway. We may not be rejoicing over tartan rompers or the return of shoulder pads, but we sure can envision slipping our feet into this season’s stunning, stacked footwear. That is, if the shoes of our dreams didn’t also cause the foot problems of our nightmares: more than half of American women deal with painful bunions, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. At least Dr. Neal Blitz can help us move past our toe woes and hold onto our shoe collections — without spending six weeks off our feet. The New York–based reconstructive foot-andankle surgeon has become something of a savior to heel-lovers who’d rather hobble in pain than accept life in flats. Despite the fact that bunions are common and treatable, Dr. Blitz has seen patients who spent years in anguish and embarrassment before seeking help. He suspects surgery horror stories deserve some of the blame. “I think people ignore bunions because they’ve heard about someone having a bad experience, involving a long recovery with crutches, or maybe an ugly scar,” said Dr. Blitz. “This is just not the case anymore, at least not with the right techniques.” When it comes to bunions, misinformation is abundant. Dr. Blitz is trying to set the story straight. For one thing, people are quick to misclassify bunions as a growth of the bone or tissue. “It’s really the misalignment of the big-toe joint pushing out on the skin from underneath that causes the bony prominence,” explained Dr. Blitz. In other words? A bunion is a bone that’s shifted out of place. Another misconception concerns the role that genetics play in the development of bunions. While some people do have a biological predisposition to shifting toe bones, heel lovers should assume their footwear preferences are part of the equation. A high heel, even one that’s designed for support, simply doesn’t jibe with the anatomy of

the human foot. There’s nothing natural about walking at a steep pitch. By placing undue pressure on the ball of the foot, the big-toe joint can move outwards, creating an unsightly protrusion. Dr. Blitz stays up on the latest research in bunions. In fact, he’s behind some of it. So, he’s well-aware of the link between high heels and bunions. That doesn’t mean he’s looking to shame shoe-lovers. Instead, he helps them get in heel-wearing shape — literally, by fixing feet to fit sky-scraping shoes. After all, why battle the force of a beautiful shoe when you can work with it? Finally, there’s the widespread belief that bunion-removal patients must stay off their feet for weeks or months following surgery. To be fair, this rumor is rooted in truth. Bunion removal traditionally had been considered a tricky procedure. For years, there was no single way to get it done. But, across different surgeons and techniques, one thing remained true: recovery required six weeks of immobilization. That’s not the case, however, for patients of Dr. Blitz. His signature procedure, called Bunionplasty ®, lets him break the six-week rule, without compromising healing success or aesthetic integrity. “I developed a patented bunion surgery implant that properly stabilizes the bone during the recovery process,” he explained, “allowing patients the ability to walk afterwards.” By afterwards, he means that patients can walk away from surgery on their feet, wearing only a small surgical shoe. And underneath the shoe lies a foot bearing only subtle signs of surgery, said Dr. Blitz. “My background as an artist allowed me to look at bunion surgery from an aesthetics point of view rather than the orthopedic view.” Rather than make an incision on the top of the foot, as most surgeons do, Dr. Blitz places it on the side of the foot, and uses plastic surgery techniques to leave feet prettier and pain-free. So, give Dr. Blitz a call and hit Fashion Week knowing the shoes of your dreams could become a painless reality.

can you describe your philosophy on plastic surgery and beauty? I want my patients to feel good about themselves, and I always strive to provide patients with a natural result with minimal recovery time. Many of my patients tell me that after their procedure, their newly found confidence allowed them to go for that job or promotion, get back into the dating scene, or even just wear the clothes they always dreamed of. Oftentimes, they tell me that no one pinpoints that they’ve had a procedure, but do notice that they look refreshed, younger, and more vibrant. I help their outer appearance reflect their inner beauty. Do you believe plastic surgery can help a person’s self-esteem? Absolutely! It’s what drives many patients to come and see me and my staff. It’s always amazing to see the difference in how a patient sees themselves from their first consultation to their post-operative checkup. They walk taller, wear clothes more comfortably, and you see a sparkle that just wasn’t there before. Are men fans of plastic surgery? Yes, and the number of male patients seeking cosmetic procedures is growing. About 30 percent of our practice is now male, and they are requesting all kinds of non-invasive as well as surgical procedures. We perform the latest hair restoration procedure, called NeoGraft, which uses the patient’s own hair! Many men have also begun to see the benefit of lipo, Botox, and fillers, and are also enjoying treatments in our MedSpa.

How effective is a mini facelift? It can be very effective for the right patients. I evaluate each patient thoroughly, and once we discuss their aesthetic goals, we determine the best course of treatment. Patients can see a refreshed and natural result with a minifacelift, and because it’s less invasive, there is very little downtime. What’s the difference between Botox and fillers? Botox is the brand name for onabotulinumtoxinA. It relaxes the muscles to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The result is a smoother, refreshed appearance. Fillers, like Restylane and Juvéderm are injected under the skin to smooth away wrinkles. Another injection treatment we’ve seen gain popularity is Kybella, an injectable treatment that eliminates the small, stubborn, pockets of fat located under your chin. Kybella injections are performed in my office, can be done in just minutes, and involves minimal discomfort. The results are amazing!

A HAmPTonS GIRL’S GUIdE To mICRodERmABRASIon And CHEmICAL PEELS By sienna davenport

aking fantastic care of my skin is extremely important to me. Lately, I’ve heard several friends talking about getting microdermabrasion and chemical peels and loving the results. Still, I wondered exactly how these treatments work and which anti-aging treatment would be right for me. I jumped at the chance to talk to staff at Trifecta Spa, a leading medical spa in New York City and ask them all the questions floating through my mind. They spa gave me the inside scoop on how each of these treatments work and their unique benefits. Below is a quick guide about these various treatments. I hope the list will help you decide which anti-aging treatment is the perfect one for you. It certainly led me to greatness!

DIAmOND-tIP mIcRODERmABRASION Totally pain-free, diamond-tip microdermabrasion begins with exfoliation. Removing the outermost layer of the skin leaves behind a fresher, smoother complexion. Next, a vacuum is used to stimulate circulation. This increases blood supply to the area, and provides nourishing nutrients, encouraging regeneration and all-important collagen formation. As simple as that! What results can be expected? Enlarged pores are tightened, skin feels fresher, and smoother, and skin tone is improved. Sun damaged skin is hydrated and smoothed, fine lines, wrinkles, and minor acne scars are diminished. A treatment generally takes from 20 to30 minutes. If you combine your treatment with a facial the time will be from 45 to 60 minutes. The diamond tips do not interact with skin like a chemical would, so there is less chance of reaction and irritation. The client can also see dead skin being removed, an encouraging sign that the peel is working.

cHEmIcAl PEElS A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers. Chemical peels are a fantastic weapon in our armory against dull complexions, fine lines, wrinkles, and hyper pigmentation. While the word ‘chemical’ might sound harsh, these peels are actually not, and when administered in the right way, they can be highly effective. During a chemical peel treatment, acidic solutions are applied to skin, with the sole aim of eliminating build-up between cells. The solution exfoliates gently and improves texture and color. The good news is minimal downtime, usually involving a little redness or shedding, but nothing major. The major upside is multiple treatments result in cumulative benefits for improved tone and texture. Trifecta Spa offers three different fantastic types of chemical peels. ViPeel, Environ COOL Peel, and CRC Phytic Peel. Here’s the 411 on what makes each one unique:

VI PEEL This hugely popular treatment combines the strongest and most effective acids, and it’s the only proprietary chemical peel that is safe for all skin types. It’s best for patients with hyper-pigmentation, acne scarring, or skin that is showing signs of aging. ViPeel is your ticket to a more beautiful, glowing, and even complexion, regardless of skin color. In addition to the ingredients of usual peels, Vi Peel contains a blend of ingredients at a higher concentration, with extra retinoic acid to boost effectiveness.

ENVIRON COOL PEEL Trifecta Med Spa offers Environ 30-minute, 60-minute, or sixlayer cream or gel peels. Environ Cool Peel is ideal for clients with fine lines, wrinkles, sun-damage, uneven skin tone, oily skin, acne, and rosacea. It is a gentle treatment with minimal-to-no downtime. Specifically designed to address problematic skin, Cool Peel helps to clear the complexion and calm inflammation. Environ pioneered the production of acidic creams and gels instead of using acid solutions. This peel feels cool, with no burning sensation.

CRC PHYTIC CHEMICAL PEEL CRC is based on phytic acid, an organic substance produced from brown rice. This concentrate is clinically proven to be comparable to a 50 percent glycolic acid solution, without irritation or sensational effects. This unique treatment provides a variety of benefits, such as lightening activity, reduction of acneic lesions, substantial reduction of pore size, regulation of sebum secretion, mild to moderate exfoliation, and smoothing effects. CRC is customized for every patient and can only be performed by a doctor or licensed esthetician. A CRC treatment can also be used in conjunction with laser, microdermabrasion, and other procedures. r. Jared Coren is known to the greater New York area for providing the highest level of service and care for his patients at West Hills Animal Hospital, a 24-hour emergency care facility located in Huntington. A graduate of Cornell University, Dr. Jared Coren received his doctorate of veterinary medicine graduating in the top 10 percent of his class. Having earned several honors and awards for his expertise in neurology, pure-bred dogs, and health and wellness of companion animals, Dr. Coren strongly believes providing a superior level of care is only one important aspect to the services that West Hills Animal Hospital offer. Dr. Coren insists that communicating well with pet owners is equally as important and essential to ensuring proper care for his patients. “We understand that pets are considered to be ‘kids’ to our clients and it very important to explain care and treatment of pets carefully and be able to communicate with our pet owners. The clientele that we attract considers their pets to be their children. I happen to feel this way about my dog, as does my wife, and we consider our pet a part of the family. Our clients require this high standard of care and communication, and they want a facility that is going to offer this for their clients and patients.” West Hills Animal Hospital was founded by Dr. Coren’s father, Dr. Alan Coren, over 30 years ago. Dr. Jared Coren explains to me that at the time West Hills Animal Hospital was the only 24-hour emergency care facility around. “My father worked around the clock, 24 hours a day,” says Dr. Coren. “Although he had a staff at the 24-hour facility, he was the only doctor on call servicing emergency pets. His dedication became apparent to me as I watched and admired his incredible work ethic. He would work all night long, on call, treating emergencies, and then he began seeing patients during the day. My father always received a great deal of respect from his clients and it was really nice to have the opportunity to experience this in person. I watched him make a difference in treating his clients’ pets, and I liked that so much. I was sixteen years old when I worked in both our Commack and Huntington locations. I grew up in the animal hospital and spent all of my time there. My father never pushed me to go into the veterinarian field. I worked at the animal hospital alongside my dad while I was still in high school. It was a memorable part of my life,” says Dr. Coren. What makes this 24-hour care facility unique is that West Hills Animal Hospital’s primary focus is on the level of care provided instead of the monetary aspect. “A lot of the veterinarian clinics are numbers guys, and my father was never like that,” says Dr. Coren. “He just knew what was right and then went forward with it.

He wanted to do what was in the best interest of the animals and he followed his gut.” West Hills Animal Hospital’s mission is to provide the highest level of medical and surgical care. “My dad’s vision was unique because it’s the level of care that counts the most as opposed to costs, and that’s what sets us apart from other animal hospitals,” explains Dr. Coren. “My dad would much rather pay for staff to provide a certain standard of care and then things just grew from there.” West Hills Animal Hospital will be opening a specialty facility on its premises at the end of the year. The hospital will be maintaining its general practice and will have specialists in every discipline at the specialty facility. The Secret to Looking Natural Forever By Nicole Sawyer

S

tep aside Kylie Jenner and J. Lo, the days that women transform their appearances to mimic your larger-thanlife lips and bountiful behinds are limited. New York–based plastic surgeon Dr. Kevin Tehrani told us natural is in. “Women want to look and feel real,” he said. “Instead of pointing to pictures of their favorite stars, people want to look like the best Instagrammed version of themselves,” he added. The biggest trend he is seeing: smaller is sexy. “My patients are showing fewer photos of their favorite celebrities, and if they do show me a photo of Kylie Jenner, they say, ‘I like her lips but smaller,’” Dr. Tehrani shared. Dr. Tehrani is a world-renowned plastic surgeon voted by his colleagues to be one of the top 10 plastic surgeons in New York. His specialty is painless and scar-free aesthetic breast augmentation. He is one of only a few breast surgeons who daily perform a technique called TUBA (transumbilical breast augmentation). TUBA is a unique procedure to increase breast size without actual incisions around the nipples or even near breasts. A small incision is made inside the belly button or through any existing scar. “The result of this type of enlargement looks the same as using other methods, but without the telltale scars on the breasts,” Dr. Tehrani explained. Another popular procedure that gives natural results is called breast fat injection. It’s ideal for women who only want to increase their breast size by a cup and also get rid of unwanted fat in other areas of their body. Dr. Tehrani transfers fat from undesirable locations and sculpts it into perfectly shaped breasts. “People are going more conservative — subtle changes for their own self-improvement. They don’t want it to be so in your face,” he said. Dr. Tehrani revealed the number one reason people even consider plastic surgery is “not because they look in the mirror and think What is this ugly thing? It’s that they think, If I took care of this, I would look much better and feel better about myself,” he explained. But perhaps his most groundbreaking discovery is a procedure

called Painless ERBE Jet Breast augmentation, where he uses water pressure techniques and numbing medicine in place of the typical electrosurgical generator that causes pain in patients. A recent study performed by Dr. Tehrani and his team showed his waterpressure procedure reduced pain in patients by 90 percent: 30 percent felt no pain at all, and 10 percent didn’t notice the difference. While Dr. Tehrani enjoys transforming patients’ looks and lives, he says people have to be careful to not slide down a slippery slope. The key to looking young forever is to be realistic and natural. Some patients “want their neck to be quite tight, but it’s not realistic,” he explains. Dr. Tehrani believes it’s best to age gracefully. He believes the secret to looking natural forever is to not overdo it. “Start with nonsurgical procedures. Instead of turning 50 and doing a facelift, do nonsurgical smaller injections. Hold off on a surgical lift for 10 years, and then at about 60 you do it for the first time, instead of having to redo it,” he advised. aristocratps.com Social Life

The 23 rd Annual Watermill Center Summer Benefit & Auction By Kevin Berlin

FADA: HOUSE OF MADNESS On July 30, Robert Wilson and The Watermill Center celebrated its 23rd annual summer benefit and auction, to support the center’s year-round artist residency and education programs, with overall ticket and auction sales raising over $2 million. FADA: HOUSE OF MADNESS, this year’s event featured new installations and performances by Watermill’s international summer program participants throughout its eight-and-a-halfacre grounds, and honored Madame Giancarla Berti in recognition of her extraordinary support. “Tonight marks the largest attendance we’ve had in 23 years,” declared Robert Wilson as he welcomed guests seated for dinner. “This year we have 130 artist participants representing over 28 nations. Can you believe it!” As guests entered through the bamboo-lined entrance they encountered Jacques Reynaud’s Angels of Apocalypse accompanied by sound installations adapted from recent recordings by Oscar nominee and singer/songwriter ANOHNI (aka Anthony Hegarty). In its first collaboration with The Watermill Center, the artist collective Bruce High Quality Foundation presented As We Lay Dying, a variety of works and performances

(interspersed throughout the center’s grounds), which are a reflection on coming to terms with the contemporary world through personal, political, and aesthetic perspectives. As guests made their way through the woods they sipped Maestro Dobel’s Black Diamond Woods Margaritas, the evening’s signature cocktail. Highlights included the Russian feminist punk-rock protest group Pussy Riot’s Make America Great Again, a reactionary installation piece inspired by Donald Trump’s campaign slogan; and John Margarita’s One Ton Tank, a poured concrete vessel filled with water and a young man wearing a black speedo held down by weights. Plukka, the international fine jewelry retailer, supported The Watermill Center for the second consecutive year. Known as the discovery machine for the most creative fine jewelry in the world, Plukka integrated some of its most unconventional and sculptural diamond pieces from Yeprem Jewellery and its own brand into the performances, underscoring its commitment to uncompromising creativity. Additionally, luminaries from the worlds of art and culture donned jewels from the collections, complementing the theme of “colorful disruption.” Social Life

Jean Shafiroff A LIFE OF GIVING By James Bernstein Photography by Michael Paniccia

I met with Jean Shafiroff on a sweltering mid-August afternoon at her Southampton home, where she was planning her hectic schedule: she had a series of charity events planned for the evening, and for Shafiroff that meant work, but this is what she loves — giving and raising money for important causes. And, she was organizing a trip to Nicaragua, traveling with her daughter Elizabeth and her friend Lindsey, to rescue dogs abandoned on the streets and bring them to New York, where they will find forever homes, as well as to support and raise awareness of animal rights internationally. This is Jean Shafiroff: a calm presence, a genteel charm, with a whirlwind life of planning and doing — all on behalf of others. On a recent Saturday, Jean participated in the prestigious Authors Night at the East Hampton Library to celebrate her first book, Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give. In many ways, Shafiroff ’s book summarizes the essence of her life. “We are not put on Earth to work with the intention of only giving to ourselves,” Shafiroff wrote. “Good fortune is a gift and with that gift comes the important responsibility to use our resources to better society. This is a true personal achievement.” Her go-to personality is summed up by one of her favorite expressions: “I have no plans for slowing down on philanthropic work. I believe there is a great need for what I do. That mission is important.” Shafiroff is recognized as being at the forefront of a new movement of modern philanthropy, where giving goes beyond financial contributions and emphasizes giving of time, knowledge, and experience. Her book contains an introduction by Georgina Bloomberg, a leading

equestrian and the daughter of former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and the book’s contents explain in stylish and simple detail the ways people can help those who are less fortunate by actions in addition to donating money. The book is a practical and comprehensive guide packed with useful information for aspiring and seasoned philanthropists. With such tireless enthusiasm, it is easy to see why Shafiroff eagerly serves on seven philanthropic boards, including New York City Mission Society, New York Women’s Foundation, French Heritage Society, The Couture Council (Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology), and the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services. She is on the honorary board of the Southampton Animal Shelter and has chaired that shelter’s gala for the past five years, raising several million dollars for animal care. The shelter is a favorite of hers because of the excellent work it does. She has chaired the gala for the Southampton Hospital three times, raising $5.4 million. Shafiroff has been honored by the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and several other organizations. She also is involved with the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, which raises money for breast cancer research and care. In New York City, she has hosted, underwritten, and chaired countless charity events. Her philanthropic work never stops. What people find remarkable about Shafiroff is the length she will go to accomplish her goals. She has previously traveled to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama to seek out homeless dogs and bring them back to New York. Her trips not only save animals’ lives, but also help to guide and support the work of people who work for the rights of animals.

Jay Schneiderman Putting the People First By Gwyneth LaBranche

J

ay Schneiderman, who six months ago took the helm as Southampton Town Supervisor, is a consensus builder who wants to preserve the social and geographical beauty that makes Southampton special. His long history of service in the Hamptons has rendered him a favorite official (and neighbor) among the residents of the East End. Growing up in this famous part of Long Island, he intimately understands the need to balance economic and cultural diversity. Anyone who lives in or has visited the Hamptons knows firsthand that the differences are huge — from summertime denizens on Gin Lane’s multimillion-dollar row to less rarified fishermen, landscapers, teachers, and nurses whose local roots and commitment to the town keep it thriving. It’s crystal clear that there’s tremendous economic disparity. That’s a tough gap to tackle. But, wanting to make Southampton a better place for everyone is a major driver for Jay. He gets up every day with the passion to overcome this challenge.

Political Path After earning a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from Ithaca College and a master of arts in education from the State University of New York at Cortland, Jay taught science, mathematics, and music at various East End schools. He also managed his family’s business in Montauk, and later formed a property management company. But, Jay is no stranger to politics. He went on to serve two terms as the supervisor of East Hampton Town and served six two-year terms on the Suffolk County Legislature. He is credited with many accomplishments, including the widening of County Road 39 in Southampton, initiating Suffolk County public bus service on Sundays, preserving thousands of acres of open space and farmland, and never raising general fund property taxes in 16 years of elected office.

Consensus & Community Building Jay believes in the power of the people. His role doesn’t only open the door to meeting celebrity politicians like Joe Biden and Michael Bloomberg, it affords him the opportunity to drive real change in the community. He’s proactive in bringing residents into the dialogue to get a sense of where the community stands on important issues. He insists, “It’s their town, their future.” His team leverages an outreach program that actively aims to cultivate a strong sense of community. He solicits feedback on key challenges the community faces like reinforcing the local economy, preserving historic buildings, maintaining clean water, and preserving the charms of the small town ‘way.’

to prepare for hard times,” and he credits them for his skills in managing budgets. There must be something in the Hamptons water, as both Jay and his sister have put their marks on the map. Helen is the originator of the alphabet charm craze. You’ve certainly seen celebrities and Hamptonites adorning themselves with her signature circular charms imprinted with an initial. Her pieces are sold all over, including right here in Bridgehampton as well as in Manhattan.

A Surprising Avocation Did you know that Jay has a passion for music? You may have seen him jamming on drums with reggae and fusion bands at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett.

Growing Up Hamptons Jay lived most of his life in Montauk, where he and his sister, Helen Ficalora, co-own the Breakers Motel. He and his family now call Southampton home. His daughter, Magda, and his son, Ruben, were named after his parents. His parents grew up during the Great Depression, and as Jay says, “It taught them

NIGHTLIFE By Joe Alexander with Photographs by Patrick McMullan

Hot Movies

Meryl Streep captures the incandescent spirit of Florence Foster Jenkins, the rich and eccentric music-loving opera singer who couldn’t carry a tune, yet stole the arts of the public because of her commitment to her dream of singing at Carnegie Hall. As she lay dying, Jenkins said, “They may say I couldn’t sing, but they can’t say I didn’t sing.” This is an inspiring and hilarious outing for Streep that you should see . . . In Sully, Tom Hanks plays Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who landed a US Airways plane on the Hudson River in 2009, saving 155 lives. Also in the film is Laura Linney and Hanks’s co-pilot, Aaron Eckhart, who said, “It was great filming the crash scenes. It was a blast.” . . . Shailene Woodley co-stars in Snowden with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays Edward Snowden, the whistleblower who leaked the surveillance files of the NSA. GordonLevitt, who had a clandestine meeting with Snowden in Russia, said, “Without a doubt, what Snowden did, he did because he believed it was the right thing to do and believed it would help the country he loves.”

East Hampton Library: Authors Night

Alec Baldwin, Gwyneth Paltrow, Christie Brinkley, Dick Cavett, Eric Ripert, and Mary Higgins Clark were among the honorary chairs of the East Hampton Library’s 12th annual Authors Night. This benefit, which features over 100 authors across all genres, is one of the nation’s leading literary events. Private dinners for the authors were held after the popular book party, which raises money for the library’s outstanding service programs. Participating authors included Michael Gross, Florence Fabricant, Ina Garten, Ally Hilfiger, Erica Jong, William Norwich, Jean Shafiroff, Kate Betts, and Vincente Wolf. Guests met and mingled with the authors, who personally inscribed their respective books. Among the event sponsors were The Hilaria and Alec Baldwin Foundation, Starbucks, Swedish Culinary Summer, Domaine Franey Wines & Spirits, and the Montauk Brewing Co. authorsnight.org

Parrish Art Museum: Unfinished Business

Lisa Cohen, the founder and editorial director of Galerie, the new chic art magazine, sponsored the opening of Unfinished Business at the Parrish Art Museum. The show featured paintings by Ross Bleckner, David Salle, and Eric Fischl, who have been friends for over forty years. The three met in the 1970s while studying at the California Institute of the Arts in L.A. Fischl’s painting of a naked women and an overexcited young man created a stir. Among those congratulating the artists were Calvin Klein; Sandy Brant; John McInroe; Sandy Gallin; April Gronik; Barbara Kruger; and the museum’s director, Terrie Sultan, who

Twin Peaks at Olde Towne, Southampton Those in the know are fully aware that Kean Development recently set a new level of excellence with its first completed, fully furnished estate, Twin Peaks at Olde Town. Poised behind a gated entry, more than four manicured acres in the heart of this exclusive enclave set the tone for luxurious appointments, exquisite furnishings, and state-of-the-art amenities. Warmed by eight fireplaces, the striking traditional residence features interiors by the world-renowned designer Anthony Ingrao, including inspired common rooms and intimate spaces throughout its 15,500 square feet of living space. The pool house features a great room, a lounge, a kitchenette, two full baths, a napping/changing room, and a canopy offering shade for dining or relaxation. Halsey Lane Bridgehampton. You’ve always dreamt about that quintessential Hampton estate on 2 acres in Bridgehampton South, perhaps on Halsey Lane, bordering 20 acres of reserve, midway between village and ocean beaches. Hopefully the house would have been beautifully designed by talented architect John Laffey and masterfully executed by Breitenbach Builders. Wouldn’t it be nice too if the interiors were professionally done by interior designer Hilary Wallace, with furnishings that could all be purchased separately? Certainly you imagine the languorous lunches and intimate dinners you’ll enjoy, all prepared in the state of the art kitchen overlooking an informal living room with fireplace. Can’t you just hear the conversation and laughter emanating from the gracious dining room? Of course having both a formal living room and a heated, screened porch both warmed by fireplaces, media room and sunroom would add greatly to your entertaining options. Naturally you’d want numerous sleeping options including a sumptuous master suite with expansive balcony with fireplace, guest bedrooms, with baths all ensuite and staff quarters conveniently located off the kitchen. Didn’t your wish list include a finished lower level with gym and wine cellar? Since your Hampton reverie included broad covered porches, pool, pool house, tennis court and detached carriage house with finished space and full bathroom above, you just know that you want it all enhanced by an Ed Hollander designed landscape plan with ample lawn and stone patios behind a gated entry. Well...good news, dreams can come true as I just happen to have one if you’re still in the market. You’d better hurry though as there aren’t many beautifully maintained, 6,500 SF+/-, 6 bedroom, west facing traditionals, available at the moment. In fact, at this price, I would book your preview today! Co-Exclusive. $13.9M WEB#27275

Interview with Vincent Horcasitas By Therese Lindstrom

W

e sat down with real estate broker Vincent Horcasitas of Saunders & Associates to get the latest insight into the market and trends in the Hamptons. Ranked the No. 56 most successful agent by transactions in the nation, with over one billion dollars worth of real estate transactions, Vincent is one of the top producing agents on the East End. How did you get into the real estate business? Back in the 1990s, I was a professional tennis player when I was injured in a car accident. During my downtime I took a job running a tennis club in Montauk and started coming back every season. In the year 2000 I got my real estate license and started working at Prudential-Elliman. I sold ten homes in my first six months. In 2012 I moved over to Saunders & Associates. There is great team effort here and an infrastructure of support. We have a team of photographers, designers, writers, seasoned marketing professionals, administrators, a data analyst, and an attorney on staff. My move to Saunders and the help of this support team tripled my sales. What have been the biggest changes in the Hamptons real estate market over the last year? The rental market has definitely changed because of the competition from short-term rental sites like HomeAway and Airbnb. We used to do rentals for the full season or for July through Labor Day, and now we have lots of requests for shorter periods. As real estate brokers we cannot write a lease shorter than two weeks, which has hurt the rental market a lot. What advice would you give new home buyers? Make sure the property has a clear title and updated certificate of occupancy (C of O). Then it comes down to location, location, location. Find the best location based on your budget. What are the trends in the market? Any new construction that’s well priced is very hot right now, particularly homes priced around $2M. We work with a lot of developers, and overall we are seeing that people want traditional on the outside and contemporary finishes inside. Also, the new FEMA laws that allow building up to 45 feet, where before it was 30 feet, have become very popular south of the highway and offer ocean views to many properties even blocks from the ocean.

How are you different from other brokers in the Hamptons? I work harder and I am very available to my clients. I always answer my phone. I am honest and I educate my clients on the market and how to invest their money. I put myself in my client’s shoes. I have to truly believe in the deal. It has to make sense. Currently I am involved with a large new development project called “The Fields.” It is 28 luxury homes starting at $3.5 million, on 35 acres, built by Paramount Custom Homes and designed by the architect Todd Nagy. I am really excited about this project, and we are just breaking ground to be ready for pre-sale in 2017. How have today’s real estate buyers changed from 10 years ago? Information is widely more accessible on the Internet now than 10 years ago. This has the client more informed — sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. A lot of websites like Trulia and Zillow publish incorrect or very generalized data on the market. This is not factual data on the market and clients often become misinformed. I like to educate and simplify the market for my clients with correct information. What is the charity closest to your heart and why? There are so many great charities, it is hard to pick just one. I played in a charity poker tournament last weekend. e/ VHorcasitas@Saunders.com p/ 631.458.4879

Long Island Sound, Cutchogue Provenance. More and more, this is what buyers are looking for in their dream home or buildable property. This rare waterfront estate achieves just that. Comprising a classic farmstead, the 1860s farmhouse, a two-story barn with a modern pool house, a pool and a detached art/exercise studio, and 32 lush acres of preserved farmland containing a five-acre vineyard make for an air of nostalgia. Chardonnay and Riesling vines are managed sustainably by a prominent North Fork winery. Of course, these features don’t translate to old. The farmhouse has been updated while retaining its 19th-century character and charm. The stunning historic barn provides plenty of garage space for car collectors, while the pool house and pool overlooking the bucolic fields are perfect entertaining spaces. Also included are three separate buildable parcels overlooking Long Island Sound: two waterfront and one water view, with a total of 460+ feet of beachfront. The remaining preserved land is suitable for any number of agricultural uses, while the three separate parcels offer total privacy and

unparalleled views for potential new homes. This is truly a unique compound, set on one of the North Fork’s most picturesque byways, in the heart of wine country. Offered at $7,500,000 by Marianne Collins e/ macollins@bhsnorthfork.com c/ 631.734.2957

The Master Class Classic Sofa and the heirloom reimagined By Anthony Michael

W

hen Blake Anding discusses the art of bespoke furniture, he exudes the passion of a true artist. For him, locally manufactured, bench-made sofas, chairs, chaises, and other luxurious pieces, are not fixtures, they are heirlooms that should survive the test of time in both their longevity and their design. Anding, who helms the company, located in the iconic Meier Building on Charles Street, is among a rare breed of furniture enthusiasts who spends just as much time cultivating his craftsmen as he does his client base. “From my perspective, furniture-making is a lost art,” he says. “We are keeping it alive by transferring skill sets from some of the best veterans of the trade to talented young artists, eager to be among a select and rare club of artisans.” Using Old World manufacturing techniques and high-end fabrics, Classic Sofa provides the apex in quality craftsmanship. Alternately, they can breathe new life into a beloved piece with expert reupholstering. As Anding and his colleagues track towards industry-rare lead times for 2017, Social Life wanted to close out the summer with a unique perspective on how one shop goes back in time to ensure a more curated future.

them and then pass them down to the next generation. Our craftsmen know that, and they put their hearts and souls into every piece they make.

There’s a definite shift in the way discriminating buyers are approaching furniture. Why are your clients leaning towards local, master-crafted furniture over the mainstream, Model Ts of the industry? First and foremost, quality. Most mainstream furniture manufacturers use compressed woods and employ a ‘screw it and glue it’ — or even ‘staple it and glue it’ — philosophy. Those pieces simply don’t stand up to a Classic Sofa. We use Old World methods of manufacturing, including double-dowel joint methodology, which makes the furniture absolutely rock solid and built for the ages. Our woods are the thickest, most high-quality pieces available, and our construction, including our springing, is unrivaled. What that means is a lifetime guarantee on our frames and our springing.

You mention master craftsmen. What’s it like to work at Classic Sofa? This is very personal for me. The former foreman of my woodshop, Mr. William Jobson, taught me most of everything that I know about the furniture manufacturing process. He passed away a few months ago at 85 years old, and it was an enormous loss for both the company and myself. William came to the U.S. from Jamaica in the 1960s, started an upholstery business, and then began to work with our team. His entire life was dedicated to upholstery, over 60 years, and he lived and breathed the essence that you can never sacrifice quality on pieces that people want to have for the rest of their lives.

As for cushioning, most brands will do a pure foam piece. Our premium down-feather blend gives an unparalleled level of comfort and lasts much longer. You add extra life by using premium raw materials, and when we source them, we never cut corners. So, these are heirloom pieces that not only stand the test of time, but will also become timeless in their provenance. Exactly. They’re not something you simply own, you take care of

And you’re able to achieve this level of craftsmanship in less time than it would take a typical showroom to fulfill an off-the-floor order? Absolutely. Currently, we are doing a lead-time of five to six weeks after fabric arrives and by 2017 that will be trimmed up to three to four weeks.

We honor Mr. Jobson’s memory by following the tried and true methods of quality manufacturing that he lived by and passed on to our younger members in the factory. Now, we still have well over 150 years of combined experience in the shop, and that combination of rare skills is now paired with a younger generation eager to learn a master craft. It’s just something that you don’t see much anymore. We are thrilled to be keeping bespoke bench-made upholstery alive. classicsofa.com Social Life

Steve Wynn Encore: Las Vegas By Joe Alexander

Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theatre, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City. His stories have been featured in numerous national magazines, including Haute Living. Joe lives in Manhattan and Southampton.

rom the floor-to-ceiling windows of the 745-square-foot Encore Resort Suite, you get a sweeping view of the famous Las Vegas strip twinkling below. Encore, an ultra-luxurious resort at the Wynn Las Vegas, with a wide range of elegant rooms and suites, offers a worldclass guest experience with exceptional service. It consistently appears on Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List of the world’s top 100 hotels. Encore was awarded five stars on the 2016 Forbes Travel Guide. The place is so fancy, it’s good enough for the Royal Family. The Encore is where Prince Harry stayed in 2012, that time he got into hot water after being photographed partying in the nude. But apart from that embarrassing incident, Harry spent a few days enjoying the resort’s other amenities while properly attired.

Encore & Wynn

The Tower Suites Show-stopping views will also take your breath away at the Encore’s Tower, a jewel-like bronze, 63-story high rise. Guests enter through a private lobby, a hushed oasis amid the Vegas hubbub. Inside, luxuries abound; suites include workspaces, comfortable seating, marble baths with dual sinks and soaking tubs, dreamy beds, fluffy terrycloth robes, massage tables, and even televisions in the bathrooms. In-room dining is an option for business or leisure. There’s a spectacular European-style pool and lounge, and the Encore’s on-site concierge service will meet your every whim. The suites are large . . . and larger — there’s even a duplex three-bedroom apartment (where Prince Harry stayed). You might not want to leave your Tower suite, but you can do so in style if you wish; the hotel will arrange a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce to take you anywhere.

Le Reve — The Dream Le Reve is a wildly popular, magical show that defies description. Picture a Cirque du Soleil–style ballet in water, with fire elements, acrobatics, and high diving in a spectacular venue. It’s widely praised as one of the best shows in Vegas, and the BBC called it “wonderfully moving and magical, a story of love, passion, and romance performed through aqua-dance.” Feats of daring, synchronized swimmers, and an underwater tango are performed in a specially designed, multimillion-dollar circular “aqua theater.” The Los Angeles Times said, “Its backstage infrastructure of tanks, stagecraft, and computers looks like the inside of a submarine.” Cushy VIP seating is available as well as a premium Diver’s Dream package, which includes a two-night stay at either the Wynn or the Encore, tickets to the show, a backstage tour, plus an SDI-certified scuba training session with the Le Reve diving team. If you’re really brave, you can watch a live show while diving in the 1.1-million-gallon tank! (Bear in mind, you will be swimming among professional ballet dancers and acrobats with zero body fat, in front of 1,600 spectators.)

World-Class Stars & DJs

The Spa at Encore

The Wynn and the Encore offer myriad entertainment options at both indoor and outdoor venues, with top talent and world-class DJs. Seth MacFarlane recently brought his Sinatra show there; Diplo is a resident DJ; and upcoming acts include Kaskade, Deadmaus, Tinashe, Nick Jonas, David Guetta, Major Lazer, Skrillex, and Flosstradamus.

The Encore’s award-winning opulent spa is a relaxing respite from the Vegas hustle and bustle. The facilities include hot whirlpool tubs, cold plunge pools, and, aah, heated stone lounge chairs. Melt away tension with any of a variety of classic massage therapies, including deep tissue, aromatherapy, and Swedish, as well as specialties like Nalu body, desert stone, Thai oil fusion, and expectant-mother massages, plus several other exclusive techniques developed in-house at Encore’s spa. Beauty treatments include a selection of body wraps and facials. My favorite was the 24 karat gold facial and the rarest of frankincense from the gardens of Ethiopia that left me glowing, gleaming and, yes, golden! The spa also offers fitness classes in yoga, Pilates, core revolution, and more, and they’ll even create a personalized fitness program for you.

Coste Di Mare Restaurant There are dozens of dining options between the Encore and the Wynn, but one standout is the four-star Coste di Mare, where the chef Mark LoRusso serves acclaimed Mediterranean fare. Italian cuisine featuring homemade pastas and fresh seafood flown in daily from Italy are the main attraction. A specialty of the house is the scampi vivi, which the menu describes as “the single best live langoustines on the planet.” Coste di Mare flies in its langoustines alive from Italy, and they remain alive until they are cooked. They say they are the only restaurant in North America to serve langoustines in this manner. Never fear, meat eaters, the menu also features delectable steak, chicken, and lamb entrées. There are also acclaimed tasting menus, a family-style seafood feast, and a seasonal “taste of Italy.”

The Wynn Buffet The buffet at the Wynn is considered one of the best in town. Travel & Leisure ranks it among the top five in Vegas, and calls it “the most lively and delightful buffet in Las Vegas.” USA Today says the Wynn buffet is “one of the more elegant spreads on the Strip.” The buffet had a facelift in 2015, giving

Steve Wynn’s Art Collection Billionaire hotelier Steve Wynn is one of the world’s great art collectors. When I was at the Encore, Jeff Koons’s gigantic sculpture Tulips was in the Wynn Theater rotunda, which connects the hallways between the Encore and the Wynn. This art work will be moved to his newest property, which opened in August, Wynn Palace in Cotai, China. You may remember hearing in the news about Le Rêve, the Picasso portrait that Wynn was about to sell for $139 million when he accidentally put his elbow through it. Among Wynn’s vast collection are sculpture by the glass artist Dale Chihuly and paintings by J.M.W. Turner, Edgar Degas, Jan Vermeer, Claude Monet, Rembrandt, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Andy Warhol. wynnlasvegas.com 702.770.7070

it a softer, lighter color scheme, wasabi-hued marble floors, and brightly colored canopies above the live-action cookingstations. And there are a lot of those, including a rotisserie wall with slow-roasted meats such as prime rib and lamb, a rotating griddle serving pancakes and tacos, and a grill for rodizio-style South American barbecue. Sweet tooth? Try the pâtisserie with an assortment of sweets hand-dipped in chocolate. A dessert oven pops out warm molten chocolate cakes, cookies, and toffee puddings, and don’t forget the rotating gelato station. Brunch is available on weekends, and vegetarian options are available at all times. One of the new dishes that the executive chef, Russell Parker, introduced is Frank Sinatra’s actual family recipe for spaghetti and meatballs. Now that’s Vegas, baby!

Helicopter Tour of the Grand Canyon Why take a bus or a car to the Grand Canyon when in only 45 minutes you can fly to the South Rim on a state-of-the-art ECO-Star helicopter for an aerial tour of the Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dam. It’s all so civilized; you receive a bottle of Champagne and a gourmet lunch, which you can enjoy while taking in the incredible scenery after landing at the bottom of the canyon. I suggest going in the afternoon so you can catch the sunset. On the way back we asked the captain to fly over the Strip as the lights flickered on. This is a breathtaking side trip and can be done door to door in less than four hours. Of course, your concierge at the Encore will book this for you.

England’s Whatley Manor A Weekend in the Country By Joe Alexander

Malmesbury English country houses have a unique mystique, changing hands and circumstances with the ebb and flow of history and family fortunes. Whatley Manor, in the hamlet of Malmesbury in the storied Cotswolds, remained a private home until 1987, when it became a popular hotel. So alluring is this place that a Swiss couple, the Landolts, who had stayed there as guests, snapped it up when it went on the market in 2000, and embarked upon a painstaking restoration, bringing back the original grandeur and adding posh touches that dowagers of old could never imagine.

Michelin Star Dining Whatley’s Michelin two-starred Dining Room is a jewel in the Cotswolds, drawing gourmets from all over Europe and beyond to sample the French cuisine of the chef Martin Burge. In the

afternoon, we had tea by the fireplace, nibbled on salmon, went for a swim, and before dinner, stopped at the bar for a cocktail and appetizers. This was not smart, we soon realized, because Burge’s feast is heaven for both the palate and the eyes. The Dining Room offers three tasting menus, if you’re so inclined, including one that’s vegetarian. On our visit, the menu featured langoustines, filet of sea bass, pan fried scallops, red mullet, filet of beef, and honey glazed duck breast. The presentation was unparalleled, and the service gracious, and totally unpretentious, the staff knowledgeable and Quail breast pan fried

friendly. We were so happy and stuffed. You can’t help but want whatever is placed in front of you, so we took the chocolates and petit fours to our room for another day. Okay, I admit it, we had them for breakfast the next morning. Well, actually, we had them before breakfast. But remember, there’s that world-class spa on the premises where you can burn off some of those extra calories. A less formal dining option is the brasserie Le Mazot, with the atmosphere of a Swiss chalet, and a menu that includes fish, lamb, and beef, and its deservedly popular and authentic Swiss fondue. The food is prepared by the same culinary wizards who prepare meals for the Dining Room under chef Burge’s magical baton.

Movie Magic in the Cotswolds You’re not the only one to have noticed the exquisite beauty of the Wiltshire area in the Cotswolds. Movie directors have been drawn to the region for decades, thanks to the light, the mellow hue of the Cotswold stone, and the veddy, veddy Englishness of it all. Within a stone’s throw from Whatley Manor, you will find film sets from The Remains of the Day, Sense and Sensibility (Dyrham Park), Stardust, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse (Castle Combe) and Tess of the D’Ubervilles (Chavenage House). The medieval village of Lacock, most of which is under the control of the National Trust, has been the setting for Pride and Prejudice, Chocolat, The Other Boleyn Girl and . . . wait for it . . . the Harry Potter films!

Princess Anne’s Equestrian Event HRH Princess Anne’s country spread at Gatcombe Park is nearby, and for six years now Whatley Manor has sponsored her equestrian event, the Gatcombe International Horse Trials, which will be held September 16 through 18. A stay at Whatley Manor that weekend includes entrance passes and a program for the event, a meet-and-greet with members of Whatley’s team, and a mini-massage at the Aquarius Spa. Princess Anne kicked off this equestrian partnership by coming to Whatley and, dramatically wielding a sword, she cut a cake created by Martin Burge. gatcombehorsetrials.co.uk

Highgrove House Gatcombe Park is also the site of some other equestrian events throughout the year, so check the schedule if you can’t make the International Horse Trials in September. Anne’s daughter, Zara Phillips, an Olympic medalist, competes there. And you never know who might drop by to watch the excitement; Anne’s brother, Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales and father of Princes William and Harry, has a pile just a few miles away, Highgrove House, in Doughton. His Duchy Home Farm produces jams, cookies, and hair and body products that can be bought at the Waitrose supermarket. waitrose.com Social Life

Gardens at Whatley The gardens at Whatley comprise 26 distinctive “rooms,” inspired by the original 1920s plans. From sweeping lawns to rose gardens to the lime trees lining the drive to the courtyard, it’s all designed to delight the senses. Flowers have been planted with fragrances in mind as they bloom. Near the terrace off the kitchen are fragrant herbs and vegetables that are used by the chefs. Three bronze donkeys stand on the lawn by the stable; they were created by the renowned Swiss sculptor EdouardMarcel Sandoz, the great grandfather of Whatley’s current owner, Christian Landolt. There are formal gardens, a loggia garden, popular for weddings, and a pond, all surrounded by handmade walls of Cotswold stone. A subsidiary of the river Avon runs by the property and is perfect for idyllic country walks, with graceful swans gliding by. A fun and interesting activity is the garden tour led by Whatley’s longtime head gardener, Andy Spreadbury. He brings the spectacular grounds to life on a leisurely two-hour stroll, followed by lunch at Le Mazot. There is no better way to spend an afternoon in the English countryside.

New Wave Hotel Travel + Leisure dubbed Whatley one of a “new wave” of country hotels, its 23 luxurious rooms and suites outfitted with Bang & Olufsen electronics and L’Occitane grooming products. Once you enter the ivy-clad gates and proceed up the stately drive to the courtyard, where a 200-year-old olive tree stands watch, you’ll feel you’ve left your cares behind. Inside the manor, you’ll find a world-class spa, a Michelin two-starred restaurant, and a screening room with leather seating that Kevin Spacey has

enjoyed while visiting. Even though you’ll be relaxing in a bucolic setting, on 12 magnificently manicured acres with 26 separate gardens, there’s WiFi throughout the hotel in case you need to check in with the office or your family while living like landed gentry.

Philippe Stark Design There are 15 rooms and eight suites, each with its own distinctive décor and layout. Some rooms have walk-in closets; one ground floor suite has its own private patio. All offer views over the lush grounds and fabulous gardens. The Deluxe Suite is a twostory space with its own entrance off the courtyard, and the Grand Suite features a Philippe Stark–designed bathroom. Dogs are welcome at Whatley; if you let them know in advance of your stay that you’re bringing Fido along, you’ll find a luxury dog basket (filled with food, treats, and a toy for your pooch) in your room when you arrive. Whatley is a nonsmoking hotel, but there are covered outdoor designated-smoking areas.

La Prairie Art of Beauty Spa There’s a reason that the Telegraph named Whatley Manor one of the U.K.’s best hotels for spa breaks, ideal for a “super-spoiling” weekend; the estate’s renowned Aquarius Spa is a big draw for visitors. You can get dizzy just deciding which delicious treatment to indulge in, but check out the hydrotherapy pool, tepidarium, saltscrub showers, thermal cabins, or serial mud chamber while deciding whether you want a facial, body rub, or intense Iyashi Dôme detoxifying treatment. The Aquarius Spa is a La Prairie Art of Beauty center, and offers signature La Prairie treatments. whatleymanor.com +44 (0)1666.822.888 Bedroom Suite

Le Jardin de Rusie & Stravinskij Bar A Roman holiday By Anthony Michael

T

here are no bad restaurants in Rome. Some might argue the same for all of Italy. However, when in Rome, Le Jardin de Russie is arguably among the city’s best. In the heart of one the finest of all the five-star hotels in Rome, Hotel de Russie, Le Jardin is located between two of Rome’s most beautiful and famous piazzas, Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna, and nestled within the high-end shopping district Via Condotti. Get in the mood before you dine at Le Jardin de Russie; visit the Stravinskij Bar. Drawing an eclectic crowd at all hours, the bar features mix masters who stir up contemporary creations as well as a range of healthy drinks and homemade iced tea. Don’t pass up the Italian wine cobbler, made with Italian red wine fortified with bourbon, Peychaud’s bitters, grapefruit

juice, lime juice, and raspberry syrup. It has a bit of a kick, so you may want to get a snack. No need to go overboard: keep it light with either the panzanella, a salad of tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, and fresh onions, or the seared prawns with Mediterranean vinaigrette and spinach. During summer months, it’s best to call well in advance for a table in the Secret Garden, which extends from Via del Babuino up to the Pincian Hill and into the iconic Villa Borghese Park. This multi-terraced paradise, tucked away from the hustle and bustle, is accented by rose bushes, oranges trees, and the flicker of candles by night. Locales like this are decidedly rare. Inside, an elegant dining room is truly an extension of the exterior, accented by palm fronds and low light. Social Life

Take a deep breath and prepare for gastronomical romance. Fulvio Pierangelini, the director of food, is one of the most celebrated chefs in the world. He is often referred to as the “soloist of great Italian cooking” and a “food whisperer.” And, he, along with the executive chef, Nazzareno Menghini, create an experience that is nearly impossible to duplicate. “I prefer preparing food through a series of easily identifiable operations that express themselves in all their transparency,” says Pierangelini. “This doesn’t mean making food without research, but having made simplicity the primary purpose of that research.” It’s no wonder, then, that a signature dish — and one highly recommended — appears to be the most simple: spaghetti pomodoro e basilico. Don’t let the name fool you. You may think you know

spaghetti, but this will change the way you think about food in general. Insanely perfect pasta with a classic tomato and basil sauce is pure heaven. This small but hearty dish actually serves as a great starter. Share it! If your appetite allows, don’t miss a twist on an Italian favorite: asparagus with burrata cream and black truffle. Looking for a little more protein? Move on to your secondi with the veal Milanese with a saffron rice tart and French beans. You'll have a difficult time deciding which was more satisfying, the veal or the accompanying extra virgin olive oil mashed potato. Finish with a selection of sorbet and ice creams, and then take a stroll to the Trevi Fountain. Bliss. roccofortehotels.com/hotels-and-resorts/hotel-de-russie/

Hotel Bernini Palace in Florence fit for royalty By Anthony Michael

When traveling in Italy’s best cities, there are a number of splurges that are simply not up for debate. • Skip the Line. Thinking of winging it? Think again. You need only to spend your entire day in line at the Duomo in Florence or the Vatican in Rome to know that getting to the front of the line is an absolute must. Opt for the ear bud audio tour as well. If you can, go private. Whichever your poison, connect with viator.com for reliable tours and good-as-gold skip the line passes. • Go big on wine. Just because you’re in the homeland doesn’t mean that every bottle will be a blockbuster. Indulge in a choice Brunello or Barolo. • Dress to the nines. Italians do, especially the men. It’s part of the culture to be polished, often at the cost of other worldly goods. The exception is sensible shoes, which are advised for daytime meandering. • Choose your digs carefully. With a dearth of reliable websites that give an insider’s view of how and where to stay, you could find yourself stuck in what may be a new level of Dante’s hell.

W

hile small, Florence is patently Italian, read: challenging to navigate. The best bet for this seat of the Italian Renaissance is something central, elegant, and relaxing. Overlooking Palazzo Vecchio, at the center of Florence, and just a stone’s throw from the Arno River, the Bernini Palace Hotel has become one of the most exclusive destinations in the city. Built in the 16th century, this renowned five-star accommodation, a small but mighty slice of luxury, has all the amenities of a giant chain, while adeptly maintaining intimate Old World charm. It’s no wonder. Situated just behind Piazza della Signoria and the famed Uffizi Gallery, the structure is ancient and evocative (it was the first building in Florence to be equipped with running water and a stable — so, it was off to a good start). In the late 19th-century, for the few years that Florence was the capital of Italy, it was the Columbia Parlamento Hotel, a meeting and dining place for members of Parliament, and a residence for some government officials. Of course, the politics of Italy have been the stuff of intrigue for centuries, and that aura endures in this stately, historic property. First things first: belonging to the international association of Les Clefs d’Or, the staff is well equipped to manage any wish — or trouble — that guests may have. JFK and FCO? The concierge can track it down adroitly — true story. Lighter lifts include expert advice on what to see and where to eat in a city of overwhelming options. All 74 rooms are spacious, opulently decorated, and equipped with sinfully soft linens, exclusive Simmons mattresses; anti-allergy duvets; and soft, cotton-satin duvet covers. Some views are better than others, with some rooms offering a spectacular view of the Duomo — ask for this feature. If privacy is a concern, the Tuscan Junior Suites offer exceptional space and historic elegance. Regardless of which room you choose, the generously sized, and perfectly perfumed Lorenzo Villoresi Firenze bath products are a significant extravagance. Upon waking and after bathing in a spacious lav, make your way to Sala delle Colazioni (breakfast hall) which was once called Buvette del Parlamento (Parliament’s restaurant). The buffet offers an exceptional selection of homemade, organic, and natural foods as well as baked products. There is even a dedicated area with gluten-free products. The freshly squeezed juice is perfect with a splash (or generous pour) of prosecco. Speaking of eating, later in the day the recently restored restaurant, La Chiostrina, is perfect for dinners, business meetings, or light lunches. Located near the lobby under a 16th-century colonnade at the ground floor, La Chiostrina features Tuscan-typical cuisine from a menu that changes seasonally.

The Lounge Bar, which evokes the Belle Epoque (this hotel was once the Shield of France Hotel), is perfect for a romantic rendezvous. Get the Negroni, which was created in Florence by Count Camillo Negroni in 1919. The Golden Martini, enriched with real gold powder, will make you feel shiny. The whiskey selection includes at least 50 fine blends. The Garden Terrace, with bar service, is located on Bernini’s rooftop, overlooks the Palazzo Vecchio, and features gazebos, pavilions, and a solarium. This is the perfect locale for an iconic Aperol spritz. The Bernini Palace Hotel is also a great option for conventions or weddings. The dramatic Sala Corsini can accommodate up to 45 people, which is just about the max you’d want for perfect European nuptials. Abutting piazzas make for perfect photo ops — though, beware the sea of selfie-sticks. For fashionistas, a walk through the most exclusive of Florence’s boutiques and ateliers with a personal shopper is available. The hotel also offers shuttle service to and from The Mall, a luxury outlet where the most famous Italian and international fashion brands can be found. Last but certainly not least, a wine and food tour from Florence to the Chianti region can be organized for Bernini’s oenophile-gourmet guests, with visits to selected wineries guided by a professional sommelier. hotelbernini.duetorrihotels.com

Posh Recharging Wellness & Nutrition at The Ranch Malibu By Lori Perry

T

he Ranch at Live Oak–Malibu is an intensive, endurance, wellness, and nutrition program that recalibrates guests’ lifestyles for achieving and sustaining their health goals. The founder and owner, Alex Glasscock, wanted to create an environment where people could unplug from their chronically busy daily lives and reset their minds and bodies. Both the surroundings of The Ranch and the program compels guests to focus on themselves to create a positive shift in their physical and mental health and jumpstart a more conscious approach to healthy living. Set three miles above the Pacific Ocean in the Santa Monica Mountains, the 16-cottage retreat, which opened September 2010, is beautifully situated on a large working ranch.

Designed to frame the picturesque landscape, the intimate setting features private accommodations and premium amenities. Over 200 miles of hiking trails, an open-air kitchen and great room, organic farm, yoga pavilion, romper room gym, outdoor pool and spa, and private treatment rooms for massages further enhance the spectacular surroundings. The Ranch does not have WiFi or cellphone reception (guests have limited access to computers and a landline in the communications center) because this encourages guests to focus their energies on being present in the natural, serene surroundings with others on the same path to health and wellness. theranchmalibu.com

Maya Luxe Luxury Villas Casa Nikki and El Patron By Rebecca Rose

A

rtists have attempted to share Mexico’s magic with the world. But it’s a nearly impossible task to capture the serenity and excitement of Riviera Maya. To live the full experience, I decided to visit Cancún with my brothers Joseph and Michael. The three of us are very close but very different in the way that we travel. I enjoy calm relaxing vacations with spa and beach days. Joseph likes to explore local cultures and cuisines, while Michael likes to focus on sporty adventures as well as nightlife fun. I contacted the highly recommended Riviera Maya.com to find the best abode for us. The process was easy and enjoyable. They listened carefully to our preferences, from décor to potential activities, and suggested we try both Casa Nikki and El Patron.

Casa Nikki

El Patron

Case Nikki, a stunning villa, is privately owned and just a five-minute walk from the beach. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the attentive and caring staff. With deft quickness, a delectable meal was made by the villa’s talented private chef. This three-story home with two pools that overlook the beach is simply awe-inspiring. I could have spent the entire vacation on the rooftop hammocks recounting childhood stories with my brothers or relaxing in the sauna, but the impeccable beaches just a few steps away are irresistible. We started our first day jumping into the pool. The Maya Luxe concierge service provided us with an array of fun-filled excursion options, including shopping, fine dining, diving, snorkeling, and visiting the Mayan ruins. We decided to soak up the sun and venture out the following day. I begrudgingly left the peacefully luxurious accommodation of Casa Nikki to go to the Pyramid of Chichén Itzá, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. In my opinion, the Temple of Kukulkan is the most remarkable Mayan architectural ruin at the site. What mesmerized me the most were the elaborate and detailed wall carvings made by the Mayans. That evening, we returned to Playa del Carmen for a fresh and authentic Mexican dinner. We spent our days at Casa Nikki or the beach. My brother Joseph enjoyed playing the guitar under the gazebo by the pool, and on several occasions my brothers and I scuba-dived together. Whether you are traveling with family or your significant other, this stunning villa with a stupendous staff comes highly recommended. After wrapping up four glorious days we were ready to discover the delights of El Patron.

The main difference I noticed the moment I did the walk-through with our butler and concierge is that El Patron is on the water. For those of you who love boating and taking your yacht from Sag Harbor to Shelter Island for lunch or dinner at Salt, trust me you are going to enjoy playing in these waters! For non-boaters, El Patron has ultra-modern amenities, a luxurious pool, and contemporary luxury décor that caters to even the most discerning of guests. It is the perfect getaway destination for those in search of an unforgettable experience. The breathtaking villa is composed of green gardens, romantic cabanas, and two awe-inspiring pools. The villa’s boardwalk leads to a cozy hut from where we could look at the calming lagoon when not enjoying the yacht. Due to the area’s protected exclusivity, we could truly relish the peace and serenity of our escape. During our week at El Patron, Villa Luxe planned activities that catered to each of our desired goals. We began our voyage by visiting the Mayan ruins of Tulum. I was stunned by the sky-high golden pyramids. After visiting the temples, we dove into the clear water caves of Cenote. For those with a hunger for an adrenaline rush, Cenote is the perfect place to quench that desire. We spent the rest of our week at El Patron indulging in the local cuisines, cruising on the Luxe Yacht rental, and dancing through the night. From our stays in the exquisite El Patron to our adventures throughout the Yucatán Peninsula, Maya Luxe delivered a world-class experience. mayariviera.com Social Life

Transcendence at Jade Mountain By Rebecca Rose

Jade Mountain in St. Lucia is among the most acclaimed and highly rated resorts in the world. Before arriving, I perused a multitude of pictures of the lauded hotel online, but nothing could have prepared me for the overwhelming beauty of seeing Jade Mountain in person. Unfortunately, no words or pictures can truly capture the unparalleled uniqueness of Jade Mountain, but what I can promise you is this: a hotel one part luxury and one part magic. Walking across the suspended bridge towards the entrance of Jade Mountain, I felt like I was entering a new world. I paused mid-walk to take in the lush green landscape. I could see both the Piti and Gros Piton mountains, and I felt like a storybook heroine walking over the threshold to a new adventure! The staff appeared at the hotel’s entrance to offer icy cold drinks that woke me from my reverie. It was as if my daydream reaction were something they encounter daily. In silent awe, I was guided through the ingeniously engineered suspended bridges and entered my room. The suite alone had me feeling like I was floating on a cloud that happened to have a stupendous infinity pool. I couldn’t believe the stunning architecture of the room or the view. Beyond the infinity pool I could see the green lushness of the island and its mountains as well as the endless blue of the Caribbean. I had actually forgotten that I had embarked on this adventure with my brother Michael and close friend Kayla, until I heard Michael say, “Wow!” The room’s staff opened and iced a bottle of Champagne. The three of us gathered at the pool’s edge to watch the golden orange and pink-purple hues of sunset. Once the colors faded, we reluctantly left the first of our two rooms and headed to dinner. The restaurant had the same fresh floating ambiance as the rest of the resort. We were seated next to the sparkling infinity pool that reflected the starlit sky. Michael and I began by ordering the same lemony cocktails we tasted when we had arrived. I love farm-to-table dining and was happy to see that all dishes on the menu were prepared from locally harvested ingredients. We delighted in a generous sampling of many dishes, Social Life

and I was impressed that the presentation was as visually pleasing as it was delectable. Although I had assured the staff we didn’t have room for dessert, several lovely sweets came our way. I was glad to have tasted the pitchperfect chocolate dessert. After dinner the three of us sat on Jade Mountain’s celestial terrace and, inspired by our dreamlike surroundings, we shared our own hopes and dreams. It was the type of stirring, openhearted conversation that goes on into the wee hours of the night. The next morning, we meditated and practiced yoga by our fantastic infinity pool while enjoying the vista. Next up we headed to the sea for paddle boarding and snorkeling. The water was the perfect temperature and the underwater life was as colorful and bright as I had hoped for. We enjoyed the ocean so much that paddle boarding followed by snorkeling became routine. Each day, we discovered new and exciting sea animals that we hadn’t seen before. On our third to last day we decided to venture out and enjoy a mud bath at Sulphur Springs Park and then go zip-lining. We explored the beautiful rain forests and botanical gardens as well as a local volcano. We also visited The Holy Family Children’s Home, a local orphanage headed by Sister Anthonia David. This little nook of St Lucia was filled with so many young happy faces it was easy to forget we were visiting an orphanage. By the last day, the adventures we had lived and the children we had met truly filled our hearts to the brim and it was hard to leave paradise. On Jade Mountain I became closer to those closest to me and felt more connected to nature than ever before. I never realized this could happen in such a luxurious setting. I will miss the feeling of waking up and watching the sunrise from the edge of the infinity pool. Jade Mountain is a once in a lifetime experience I think everyone needs to enjoy . . . more than just once! jademountain.com

f you could condense the experience of Italy to a dollop of fresh ingredients perfectly arranged on Old World bread, would you do it? Of course you would! Bruschetta is a staple on just about every menu these days, and the ways that restaurants interpret the classic snack are as many as the variety of ingredients you may want to experiment with in your own summer delight. That said, not every bruschetta is a masterpiece. Some are simply Tower of Pisaesque, difficult to eat vertical conundrums, while others evoke the Colosseum with their unyielding largess of flavor. My advice? Keep it simple, keep it flavorful (without hijacking your palate), and pair with a decent wine. A nice Brunello or Chablis is the perfect mid-range option for an elegant affair.

mamo The French Riviera Comes To New York By Elizabeth Darwen

C

elebrity favorite MAMO restaurant continues to draw locals and visitors alike to New York’s bustling SoHo neighborhood. MAMO New York is the transatlantic sister to the Cannes film festival’s go-to restaurant MAMO Le Michelangelo, a two decades’ old French Riviera staple and favorite among movie stars and socialites alike. MAMO, the younger SoHo sibling, is run by Italian restaurateur Mike “Mamo” Mammoliti (son of MAMO Le Michelangelo’s Herve Mammoliti) and maintains the same authentic feel and dedication to Provençal flavors as its Antibes namesake. Just like MAMO Le Michelangelo, MAMO New York attracts a wide array of celebrities, including Rihanna, Magic Johnson, Alexander Wang, Diane Kruger, Samuel L. Jackson, Gigi Hadid, Beyoncé, and Jay Z. This season, MAMO introduced a number of exciting new dishes and drinks, which includes fresh salmon carpaccio, wild sea bass with fingerling potatoes, and stuffed rabbit rolls with spinach and foie gras. The new dessert menu includes prepared-to-order sorbetto al limone, perfectly balanced crème caramel, and velvety mousse al cioccolato. MAMO also offers a selection of homemade cakes, such as the torta di meringa e vaniglia and torta al cioccolato. New summer cocktails to enjoy with your meal or on their own include MAMO’s signature drinks, including the Amorena, a sour cherry flavored drink; the beautiful lavender Valentina; and the smoky yet elegant Fumée as well as the tart yet sweet homemade limoncello.

Heading up the kitchen and the brand new menu is the Michelin-starred executive chef, Massimo Sola, formerly of Eataly Roma and Ristorante Quattro Mori, and winner of the best pasta at the 2016 Il Primo Manhattan competition. A native of Italy, Sola grew up surrounded by the flavors and cooking style of Italian-French Provençal cuisine. Drawing on colors and nature as inspiration, Sola is known for his simple yet eye-catching dishes. Some of MAMO’s signature offerings include its flavorful raviolini al tartufo (truffle ravioli), coniglio alla ligure (rabbit legs with spinach and foie gras), the MAMO burger and the focaccia al tartufo (truffle pizza). For those with a sweet tooth, MAMO also offers delicious desserts such as the classic tiramisu, the rich affogato alla vaniglia con fragole calde and the cheesecake alla lavanda (cheesecake with a lavender twist). MAMO offers diners traditional Southern Italian and French cuisine in an intimate yet elegant setting. The bi-level restaurant includes a private dining room on the ground floor and a formal dining room upstairs. Both have walls lined with original family photos and oversized vintage movie posters. The décor also incorporates classic New York–inspired touches, such as exposed brick walls. mamonyc.com

PERFECT PAIRInGS By sharon roth

W

ith some of the most magnificent beaches on the planet, lush sweeping fields, and vineyards in every verdant shade, and long, revitalizing days and dusks by the sea, the Hamptons has always inspired no less than the sublime in food, cocktails, and vino. From the exquisitely simple flavors of the locally grown to delectable imports from every region in the world, East Enders have long been gifted navigators of culinary delights. The latest rage at the top of the food and wine chain — and pioneering the most extraordinary experiences yet available in culinary ambrosia — is the incomparable team of talent at JK Chef Collection, a company dedicated to matching Hamptons families with personal chefs. The brainchild of the former famed children’s theatrical agent (clients included Sarah Jessica Parker and Mark Ruffalo) Jack Kelly and the renowned Southampton chef Jeff Purrazzi, JK Chef Collection services distinctive clients in the Hamptons, New York City, and Punta del Este (the St. Tropez of Latin America). They handpick chefs from around the world who are artists in every cuisine imaginable yet enjoy a locally grown focus. “Our favorite part is watching our client family fall in love with summering in the Hamptons and eating superb food, paired with the perfect wine or cocktail that isn’t obvious but is just spectacular,” enthuses Kelly. “There is nothing better than watching the twinkle in clients’ eyes as they bite down on an afternoon snack of local garden beets with greens and ricotta on toast . . . or a freshly made lemon spiced ice cream sandwich, matched with a summer cocktail created just for them.” Re-creating the flair of his former career, Kelly also offers Theater in the Kitchen, educating clients and their friends on the latest food and wine trends. One of the more unusual JKChef pairing-projects this summer took place on August 1, when Kelly and Pullazzi teamed up with the in-house wine and food expert Yair Lenchner to create a veritable feast for six Tulane University sorority sisters who were celebrating their ten-year reunion. The lucky celebrants concluded the evening with an exuberant standing ovation for the creatively paired ten-course Southern-themed tasting menu.

The ladies kicked off a cocktail hour with the classic mint julep, crafted with Kentucky Bullit bourbon and served in sterling silver monogrammed cups that each guest had been asked to bring. The Beluga caviar and crème fraîche on a leek fritter was paired with the Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Triple Zero NV, a bold take on Champagne showcasing the ripest fruit. The Trimbach Pinot gris Reserve Personelle, a bright, crisp Riesling, accompanied the chicken-skin cone with scallop mousse and truffle. Other highlights included the Channing Daughters 2014 Scuttlehole Chardonnay that enhanced the lentil salad with lobster, saucisson, escarole, and mustard; and the 2013 Domaine de Fenouillet Ventoux Rouge that was paired with a Dover sole duck sausage roulade with kale and squash; and the absolutely sumptuous 2013 Bartolo Mascarello Barbera d’Alba that was savored with the beef tortellini in porcini consommé. The standing rib roast with cipollinis, Anjou pears, and burgundy with potato purée and crispy Brussels sprouts leaves was accompanied by the Anjou Rouge, Clos de L’elu Anjou, Cab Franc, 100 percent organic with light French oak treatment. For the mincemeat pie dessert, the sated guests were treated to the incomparable Delord brandy 25 year. No more words are needed. As we wind down summer 2016, take a page from the talented team at JK Chef and raise a glass of your favorite carefully selected libation to fiery late summer sunsets over the water, good times with even better friends, and divine food and wine as we move forward into a spectacular fall. jkchefcollection.com

Tim Kensett Storico Chef By Bennett Marcus

The New York Historical Society Ask Tim Kensett, who just took over as the chef at Storico, the New York Historical Society restaurant, to choose a standout dish from his Italian menu, and he can’t. “The menu changes quite a lot, on a regular basis,” he says, adding that the idea is that he can write a new menu as often as he wishes. “In terms of a standout dish, there’s not one because I wholeheartedly believe in all of them,” the affable Brit says. But then he admitted a fondness for a couple of simple classics that are currently being served at the newly re-launched restaurant: a ravioli with robiola and his spin on a caponata, the eggplant dish that he calls a “quintessential Sicilian dish that every man and his dog has a different recipe for.”

River Café in London The frequent menu updates help create dishes that are balanced, he says. “It’s also honest towards the ideals and the philosophies that we stand by.” This philosophy is very much that of the storied River Café in London, where Tim spent years working with the legendary Ruth Rogers. The proprietors of Storico recruited him specifically to bring that philosophy to New York. “I know that life; I know that philosophy; and that’s the fashion I cook in.”

Quintessentially Italian You won’t find red sauce at Storico. “The idea is that I cook Italian food the way Italians eat it in Italy,” he says. “It’s not your preconceived, stereotypical idea, and certainly not American Italian.” His philosophy is ingredient-led. “I will pick an ingredient or a group of ingredients and build a dish around them, but treat the ingredients simply, and just allow them to become the best version of themselves. So it’s simple, approachable, honest food, with specific bold flavors.” He explains that Italian food is not just about food, it’s about the reason why the ingredients go together, and it’s about where the ingredients are from, and who produces them, and it’s understanding the thought process behind why you’re doing it. Fifty percent of his job, Tim says, is looking for ingredients, which, of course, are different here. “I say that I cook Italian food the way Italians eat in Italy, but this is New York. It’s not Italy,” he laughs. But it’s not a compromise, because he can find fantastic local ingredients. And there are a few things that he insists on importing from Italy, like Parmesan cheese, prosciutto di parma, and mozzarella from Campania, and olive oil from Tuscany. “There’s certain things that are quintessentially Italian that I would not want to get from anywhere else.”

Michelin Bib Gourmand Award Prior to River Café, Tim worked at a Michelin-starred French restaurant, and won a coveted Michelin Bib Gourmand for his seasonal lunch menu at The Sands End in West London. This is his first time working in New York, and while the hustle and bustle is similar to London’s, he’s getting used to the tastes of New Yorkers, like our penchant for putting Parmesan cheese on every Italian dish. He thinks that the restaurant being tucked away in a museum is an advantage. He says, “If we can create a restaurant where the locals of the Upper West Side can go and know they’re going to get good food and have approachable and knowledgeable service, it can be a little bit of a gem for them. Because they know that not everyone knows about it.” nyhistory.org/dine 212.485.9211

oreya An explosion of influences By Kito Johnson

T

he Mediterranean corner of the globe lays claim to some of the most flavorful and nourishing natural resources, and these are reflected in Greek, Italian, and French cuisines, in addition to cuisines from countless subregions along the Riviera. Oreya’s chef and owner, Greg Grossman, brings the best of Mediterranean cuisines to his new restaurant in Southampton. “What we’ve achieved in the Hamptons is a unique dining experience that sources its flavors, and its inspiration, from one of the most magical places on Earth,” says Grossman, who opened Oreya earlier this season at the Capri, last year’s home to Beautique. “The Hamptons is on its way to becoming a foodie destination, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that movement.” Grossman and his partners invested a substantial sum into reconstructing this former pop-up space, creating a lasting concept that will surely thrive for years to come. Grossman is no stranger to the Hamptons or the fine dining scene, even though he clocks in at 21. In fact, he cut his teeth on the famed Georgica, which he took over when he was just 19. In shockingly short time, he’s made his mark with his new venture, an atmospheric dining experience that’s tough to come by. Think Mykonos meets St. Tropez, and you’ve got the gist. “Even though it’s squarely influenced by the Mediterranean, our objective is to establish a culinary experience that will leave diners

saying ‘Wow!’ says Grossman.” The cuisines of storied destination restaurants around the world that define themselves as Mediterranean are primarily based on French and Italian cuisines. Our inspiration was to incorporate significantly more Greek influence, while refining and modernizing the dishes, to create a more engaging dining experience and to differentiate ourselves.” To be sure, the raw bar is to die for, and anything from the wood burning grill, or plancha, will leave you more than satisfied. Among the standouts this summer? Well, everything. However, a perfect meal recently consisted of rouget crudo with finger lime, basil seed, lilet, sudachi juice, vanilla, and black salt, which was offset by the explosion of flavor in burrata with tempura figs. A charred Resiter Farms lamb sirloin followed, which was finished with chermoula, fried Job’s tears, and preserved cherries. Delectable libations to accompany our dishes were recommended by Shannon Stiggins, formerly of Cosme in Manhattan. When you add in the unrivaled atmosphere (elegance, pool, DJ) what Grossman has created is a total winner. He says that over the winter months there will be some major changes to the space, and that by 2017 you’ll swear you were on the beach in St Tropez. oreyahamptons.com

CUTTInG THRoUGH THE CLUTTER oF EvEnT STAFFInG By aMBer rose

utting Edge Elite is a full-service event-staffing agency that delivers best-in-class, five-star service. With over 600 part-time, fully insured staff, the agency specializes in talented mixologists, veteran servers, and professional bartenders for hire. All staff is experienced in working exclusive and high-end events. When it comes to planning and bringing your special event to life, Cutting Edge will help you make it a reality. This is the promise of the company’s founder, Lucas Mendieta, who started this business at the age of 25 in 2008, and has grown it exponentially through hard work, sweat, and tears into the premier staffing agency it is today. Cutting Edge has staffed events for high-profile parties that have included Chanel, Google, Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, and Beyonce’s Visual album release party. With our readers being avid party planner and event goers, Social Life sat down with Lucas to learn more about his secrets to success and to get tips on how to staff a party, soirée, or an event of any type. Is there a magic formula for staffing an event? When it comes to staffing we treat it like a match.com, because we have to match up the staff ’s personalities with the clients’ and then think about how the staff operates as a team, their skill sets, strengths, and so forth. It’s very much like a game of chess where we have to position all the right players in their given spots. Having people who are skilled in service can make or break a person’s experience at an event. How do you ensure your staff is experienced and up to par? Our staff go through our extensive workshops. It is a long process. After the initial interview, they’re invited to an orientation where we speak more about the company, go through the do’s and don’ts and

explain what sets us apart from competitors. We have a catering 101 workshop where we go through all aspects of the party from first arrival until breakdown, and what the catering terminology is. For our leaders we have both lieutenant and captain training, and then a bartending course as well. Ninety percent of trainings are taught by my business partner, Nathan Perry, and myself. Do you have any tips for those looking to plan an event? First, make sure your staffing agency has employees who are W2s, not 1099s (independent contractors). Not having properly insured staff opens the door to many legal liabilities for planners, caterers, and their clients. Second, planners need to have the correct ratio of staff versus guests to ensure everything is executed properly. You should also take into consideration the layout and logistics of the event to determine how much staff is needed. What is your personal commitment to your clients? We’ve built our company with heart and compassion. If I didn’t start Cutting Edge Elite, I’m not sure where I would be. I was homeless for a few years and was working as a janitor prior to getting into events, so I know firsthand what it’s like to be on the other side of the fence. So, failure isn’t an option for me. I work the events alongside my team because I want to earn our staff ’s respect as well as better understand each client’s logistics and priorities. ceenyc.com

Brand Building By Cecilia Boon t’s no secret the Hamptons is a hot bed of culinary connoisseurs, high fashion, and real estate, where branding plays a key role in influencing buying decisions. More than ever, brand credibility and recognition are integral to building brand equity and trust with consumers. Behind the creation of these brands are the masterminds of marketing. Social Life Magazine gained insight from Sach D. Chopra, a marketing maven who has managed top household brands across the food industry, to better understand the power of branding and the marketing skillset. Sach is a marketing aficionado with a passion for building great brands. “Marketing starts with understanding consumer insights and delivering products and services that meet consumer needs in today’s dynamic environment,” says Sach. He believes that iconic brands build trust with consumers and have a strong emotional connection, generally tied to product benefits or quality. Currently the director of marketing for Boar’s Head Brand, Sach rose up the ranks at Kraft Foods under the leadership of Rick Searer, the former president of Kraft Foods North America, who also spoke to us for this article. According to Rick, “A good marketer is characterized by the core competency of insight. Insight into data. Insight based on personal intuition about consumer and customer motivation and behavior. Insight into the dynamics of team leadership and how to capitalize on the collective perspective of the marketing team. Sach has consistently demonstrated this competency in multiple brand and company settings.” Considered a strong operator and turnaround artist sought out by premier companies to reposition their brands for growth, Sach oversaw marketing for business at ConAgra Foods and Dannon, demonstrating a track record of growth. Rick says that “Sach is perceived by his colleagues as a responsible, trusted leader. Responsible because he is willing to take charge. Trusted because he works well with others, engages them proactively, and incorporates their contributions genuinely. Leader because he has a long and consistent history of working collaboratively with others to create change and deliver impactful results.” Trust is more important than ever in the food industry, an industry that is undergoing rapid change due to consumer trends around premium, health, and convenience. Consumers are eating and shopping differently, and according to Sach, this has resulted “in the top-10 branded food companies losing market share over the past five years to more innovative and flexible competitors.”

Reflecting on Sach, Rick concluded by saying that “Sach is highly motivated to perform well individually and to instill a desire for great performance in colleagues. Sach is respected, a person of integrity. At Kraft, Sach was perceived as someone with whom people wanted to work because of his personal characteristics.” During and just after college, Sach worked for his father, Willie Chopra, a successful construction executive, who helped nurture a strong work ethic. Sach’s experience gave him an early start to learning people- and project-management skills. Sach earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis; he resides on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Social Life

The consultants of EFF are all volunteers and come directly from the professional arena. Rhonda is not only a great leader in her own business but she also strives for excellence in all she does. hen the time comes to plan your big day, you’ll likely turn to friends and family members who will be on hand to help, as well as a multitude of magazines, online resources, and books to read. However, wouldn’t it be nice to work with someone who has orchestrated literally thousands of events, a seasoned professional with the skills, experience, and vision to help you organize the details, make decisions, and turn your dreams into a truly one-of-a kind event. Harriette Rose Katz is one of the most sought-after event planners in the New York metropolitan area, renowned for her unique ability to create signature events that translate into unforgettable memories. Weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, sweet sixteens, and anniversary parties to nonprofit fundraisers, corporate conferences, entertainment premieres, and other special events, you name it, she’s done it — and done it well. In New York and the Hamptons social circles her name is synonymous with the fine art of flawless event planning. The events guru opened Gourmet Advisory Services in the late 1970s and has since produced thousands of spectacular events, with unparalleled culinary creativity, impeccable décor, and show-stopping entertainment. Harriette explains that New York City in the 1970s was experiencing a culinary renaissance with promising new chefs, daring food presentations, cutting-edge restaurant spaces, and ethnic cuisines rapidly gaining demand. Inspired by these food trends, Harriette threw one sensational party after another for her friends and then for her employers in the interior design industry. These gatherings were quickly dubbed “legendary,”and Harriette became known for her uniquely

creative and elegant events. “For example, dim sum, although a popular dish for centuries in China, had not yet taken its place in the New York food scene in the ’70s. I put it on our event menu options and, voila, people began requesting it at their events.” Over time, Gourmet Advisory has grown to include Harriette’s daughter, Melissa Rosenbloom, and two nieces, Claudia Warner and Trisha Stern, as well as ten other full-time employees. Together with their network of elite vendors, the Gourmet Advisory team skillfully plans every detail large or small, including venue selection, menu creation, décor design, lighting, linens, staging, production, transportation, location management, entertainment, and bridal attire. No detail is left untouched. A true event-planning legend, Harriette is also a food and beverage expert, who served for over 20 years as the president and chief operating officer of the New York chapter of the Confrérie de la Chaîne Des Rôtisseurs, a society among the world’s most prestigious food and wine organizations. She was eventually awarded its honorable Gold Star of Excellence. Gourmet Advisory currently manages approximately 130 events per year, and the team continually explores moving into new markets while finding innovative ways to raise the bar for their clients, regardless of the event size. Harriette emphasizes, “You can’t become so big and so fractured that you don’t give everyone the attention they deserve. That is why we’ve been successful. Every job for us is our most important job.” gourmetadvisory.com

hen we last caught up with the superstar DJ and producer Lee Kalt, we learned that he had taken on a new gig: daddy. That’s right. The big news was that his wife Malinda had given birth to their son, Justin Wolf (“Wolfie”). Well, Woflie turned one on the Fourth of July, and Kalt has more than gotten used to fatherhood. For the uninitiated, Kalt is renowned for having burst onto the New York City club scene as the founding resident of the legendary Sullivan Room. Since then, at residencies and parties alike, he routinely has been tapped to play with some of the world’s A-listers (and rub elbows with triple A-listers, like Elon Musk) and eventually went on to add the coveted “producer” tag to his brand as a driving force behind Subliminal Records. More recently, he’s immersed himself in technology that is poised to revolutionize how we all plan parties. And, he recently produced a killer mix available for download. tell us about this new technology. It’s amazing, and we’re one of the artists on the forefront of bringing it to the masses. The app, AGNT, will revolutionize the booking industry and cut out the middleman. What does AgNt do? It puts venues and individuals directly in touch with artists, like DJs, performers, you name it. It does scheduling, payment, and allows you to listen to music, see photos, read bios. Everything from booking to pricing to money exchange is seamless. Being able to listen to a DJ’s music style right from the app is a great benefit.

Speaking of music, you recently released a new double mix, Night and Day. What was the inspiration for that? It’s off the hook. Half is a nice daytime, St. Tropez–style, chill mix, while the other half is a great nighttime, deep house, clubby mix. [See sidebar.] It’s a really good showcase of what you can expect to hear from me at any given event. So, everyone wants to know what’s new with your bud Elon musk? [Laughs] Well, as readers probably know, I was introduced to Elon Musk right before he got huge. He loved my music and my mixes, and he decided to use us for the music and the vibe for some of the events that launched Tesla. Here’s what I can say: now that the car company is successful, we’ve been in touch and there will be more to come!

LYSS STERn THE dIvALYSSCIoUS mom By randy kane

hen it comes to the world of New York moms, there’s one name you need to know: Lyss Stern. Twelve years ago when her first child, Jackson, was born, Lyss created her company Divalysscious Moms (divamoms.com) as a way to get her groove back and to help other moms find themselves post-baby. Now a mother of three — Jackson, as well as Oliver, 9, and Blake, 2 — Lyss has grown DivaMoms into the premier network and events company for New York’s well-heeled moms. Lyss has a database of a million moms across the country, and they come to her for everything from the latest in parenting and lifestyle trends to the hottest mommy-driven products on the market to her signature events and book club — including the U.S. launch of E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, which, as every mom now knows, became hotter than hot. Lyss brings her expertise to the moms of the Hamptons every summer through the pages of this very magazine, where she presents her monthly Hot LYSST of the latest and greatest in fashions, products, and events for parents and kids out East. One of the Hamptons biggest and most beloved events every summer — Super Saturday — has gotten that DivaMoms’ flair for the past nine summers with Camp Divalysscious, where kids can have fun with everything from face-painting, glitter tattoos, puppet shows, magic shows, and more on this fabulous (#fabULyss) day. Lyss is already getting ready for next summer’s 10th anniversary of her camp and 20th of Super Saturday. “The event supports the ovarian Cancer Research Fund, and is most important to me because my father passed away at 66 from cancer, my aunt is in remission with ovarian cancer, and it’s important for my children to see me giving back to a charity that I am passionate about,” Lyss said. Moms have a lot to look forward to from DivaMoms in the next several months. The next

Amazing past panelists have included Dylan’s Candy Bar founder Dylan Lauren, fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff, jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher, and Fox News meterologist Audrey Puente. Next year’s breakfast is already in the works. Lyss and her husband, Brian, also are working on a comedy series about her widowed mother, who is affectionately known as #Nanadoll. And if that’s not enough, Lyss — who co-authored If You Give a Mom a Martini . . . has her second book set for a spring 2017 release. Though she won’t give up too much information about it, Lyss dishes that, “Every mom will see herself in it.” Lyss says, “I am constantly juggling 101 balls at once, trying not to let one drop. Never Forget Retired FDNY Lieutenant and Wife create funding mechanism for awareness of post-9/11 health problems By Charity West

Neverforgetproject.com allows you to donate directly to three organizations. These are Kieve, a 9/11 family camp; Friends of Firefighters, a multi-service organization; and Tuesday’s Children, programs for communities impacted by terrorism or trauma. It should be noted that Kieve is a family camp for all 9/11 families, Friends of Firefighters now helps all current and retired firefighters in need of its services, and Tuesday’s Children has reached out to communities in several states and in Costa Rica. It is this spirit of giving to not just their own that is so in keeping with the kind of person who becomes a firefighter. In addition to the links on NFP’s website, NFP donates all profits from a specially commissioned T-shirt that is made in the USA and was designed by Bernie Deshaies, who comes from Maine and is a student at Keene State College in New Hampshire. Bernie said, “This is important to me because there are still so many people and families who need help today due to the horrific event, and many may not even have the money to afford the support that they need. The fact that the design I made could help raise money and awareness for these continuing problems is awesome to me.” You can order a T-shirt, which costs only $20, from the NFP website. Social Life

n September 11, 2001, now retired Lieutenant Kevin Hogan of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), headed to Ground Zero not knowing what to expect or what he would encounter. Now, as the 15th anniversary approaches, Kevin knows firsthand that many of the brave and selfless members of the FDNY are dealing with serious health problems and many face the future not knowing how current or latent health effects from exposure that dreadful day and during the months of recovery efforts will take shape and change the quality of life for them and their families. Kevin, along with so many firefighters and first responders, suffers from respiratory ailments and, like so many, struggles with psychological trauma from the devastating attacks. For Kevin, being a New York City firefighter was an honor and the greatest job in the world, and now he brings his passion and love for the FDNY to generate awareness about 9/11-related health problems. The exposure to various toxins as a result of these attacks have led to a wide range of illnesses that have classified FDNY members permanently disabled, terminally ill, and living with long-term irreversible health conditions. Numerous studies have been conducted about the health problems now affecting hundreds of firefighters and it is imperative that the FDNY members and families receive the support they need and deserve. Kevin along with his wife, Katherine, now reside in Maine with their two young children, Jack and Lily. Because they live a post9/11 reality every day, they have decided to help by creating the Never Forget Project (NFP). The mission of the NFP is to support the members of the FDNY who have been gravely affected by the devastating attacks on 9/11. NFP educates on the realities both physical and economic that the FDNY members and their families currently face. Health care costs, loss of income, along with long-term health impacts from toxic exposure, are all part of the focused messaging the NFP works on. An important part of its mission is to help raise funds for nonprofits that help FDNY firefighters and their families.

The late Fred Rogers often repeated what his mother told him: “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Kevin has been a helper throughout his entire career as a firefighter and being helpers is what he and Katherine are doing now. The tragedy of 9/11 made known the courageous men and women who risked, and, in far too many cases gave, their lives in the effort to rescue people that day. And now in a show of appreciation, it’s time to give back to help this community when they themselves need rescuing. Learn more at neverforgetproject.com

Nancy Chemtob Divorce Lawyer to the Stars By Bennett Marcus Chemtob has handled have been highly complex and significant in the legal world. In Assini vs. Assini, she successfully got a court to grant a father custody of his son without a hearing, thus changing the law. The mother had custody of the child, and there was a domestic incident concerning the stepfather, so Chemtob made an emergency application to transfer custody to the boy’s father. The law in New York at that time, 2004, required a trial or hearing for custody changes. “Ever since then the law has been if you go to court and you have compelling reasons to transfer custody, you can do so on an emergency basis,” she explains.

First Same Sex-Divorce

Chemtob, Moss & Forman At Nancy Chemtob’s office, they don’t refer to their clients by name, ever. Every client has a nickname that the entire staff uses, and that’s not just for the high-profile cases Chemtob has handled, including Michael Douglas’s ex-wife, Diandra Douglas; Tory Burch; and Star Jones. Her firm, Chemtob, Moss & Forman, is one of the top matrimonial and family law firms in New York, and confidentiality is paramount. “To me confidentiality is absolutely the most important thing,” says Chemtob. “It’s probably the most important part of my business.” Although her clients have included Bobby Flay’s ex-wife Stephanie March; Tiki Barber’s ex-wife, Ginny Barber; and Matt Lauer’s ex-wife Annette Lauer, this rule extends to every case. “I have a client who’s a hedge-fund owner; we call him ‘The Tall Man’,” she says. For very confidential matters, like high-profile prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, which are not subject to public filings, the files are kept under lock and key, and only two of the firm’s partners have access.

Another groundbreaking case she handled was New York State’s first ever same-sex divorce, for a couple who married in Massachusetts but lived in New York before same-sex marriage was recognized here. “New York State didn’t recognize samesex divorce, and they couldn’t go to Massachusetts because they weren’t residents,” she says. “I had to do all the research and work to determine whether or not New York State should recognize out-of-state divorce, and the judge ruled that it could. And that was the first same-sex divorce in the state.” (New York State legalized same-sex marriage in 2011.)

A Family of Lawyers Everyone in Chemtob’s family is a lawyer, so she followed that path, hoping to be a real estate attorney. When she graduated law school in 1990, the real estate market had crashed, so there was a brief stint doing employment law, which she did not enjoy. But she kept hearing more about divorce and matrimonial law, and found it intriguing. “It’s an incredibly competitive area of law and there are very few firms that specialize in it and do it well.” She opened her own office, and today the firm has twelve attorneys and a support staff of 25.

Complex Custody Cases

Mt. Sinai Hospital’s Child Life Program

Chemtob’s clients often call her late at night and on weekends, all the time, but it’s part of the job. “I have a client who called me at one in the morning and again at three in the morning, and she was really in a bad situation. I wasn’t happy at all, but I just dealt with it,” says Chemtob. When there are issues with children, she explains, most of the time those fall on weekends or holidays. “Believe it or not we’re incredibly busy coming up to Thanksgiving or Christmas vacation.” Some cases that

Outside of work, Chemtob loves food and travel, and is active in many charitable institutions, including Mt. Sinai Hospital’s Child Life Program, which helps women whose newborns are being treated in the neonatal unit. That program is close to her heart because her own three children had serious conditions as newborns. “They’re fine now, but you don’t know they’re fine when they’re there,” she says. cmfesq.com Social Life

Karina Smirnoff Roxx: Reloaded By Bennett Marcus

Dancing With the Stars Sushi Roxx is the Manhattan restaurant with a Wow element. The wait staff, all professional dancers and singers, break into performance between taking your order and delivering your drinks. The restaurant is adding even more professional glitz in September with a Karina Smirnoff-choreographed show called “Roxx: Reloaded.”

Queen of Salsa “We’re doing five different ‘feels,’ ” says Smirnoff, meaning five different dance routines. One highlight is a salsa sequence to the music of Gloria Estefan, who Smirnoff calls the “Queen of salsa.” “I definitely love conga, with the Gloria Estefan music, because it’s like a party in the restaurant and everybody dances,” she says, beaming. “I can’t imagine people not getting up and getting their feet moving to the beat. There are also dances to universally beloved hit songs that we all know and we can sing along with. We have a little bit of everything for everyone,” the Dancing With the Stars pro says.

Homage to Prince She promises that an homage to Prince will be a celebration of his music and his artistry. As they put the finishing touches on this act, Smirnoff says it is becoming more of a theatrical production, with some props and other flourishes. The grand finale is “Purple Rain.” “It’s not just dancing to the songs, it’s becoming more paying tribute to Prince himself, and his talent and his legacy,” she says. “So it’s bittersweet. It’s sad because he’s gone, but his music will live on forever. And it’s going to live on forever at Sushi Roxx.”

Family Friendly Parents, don’t worry, you can bring the kids. The show is family friendly. Smirnoff kept that in mind as she worked out the choreography, because she’s noticed that children were among the diners during her visits to Sushi Roxx. “A lot of times at Sushi Roxx I see they’ll have Sweet 16 parties, or they’ll have birthdays for kids as young as 11 or 12, so this is something that the kids would be able to see as well.”

Great Food Smirnoff, who began doing ballroom dancing at around age 10, started doing her own choreography about a year later. She first discovered Sushi Roxx when a friend brought

her for dinner, and she was immediately smitten with the dance concept, the brainchild of the owner, Jason Apfelbaum. “It was insane. You get to experience not just great food, music, a great DJ, but you get to experience great dancing,” she says. She had a blast, and went back a few times for dinner, not just because of the dance performances, though. She loves sushi and thought their food was great. “If you ask me what do you want to eat, I usually choose sushi as number one. The ginger edamame’s incredible, their spicy tuna rice cakes are to die for, and the yellowtail sashimi in truffle oil is unreal.”

Owner Jason Apfelbaum Jason Apfelbaum said of Smirnoff. “Her energy and charisma is beyond infectious. She organically became part of the family. Karina has certainly helped us bring our brand to the next level.” Apfelbaum says he looks forward to working with her in the future as they expand Sushi Roxx into additional markets. “Now I feel like I am part of the Sushi Roxx family,” Smirnfoff says. sushiroxxnyc.com 212.726.9500

Tony Ingrao & Randy Kemper Baccarat Towers By Bennett Marcus

AD100 Architectural Digest’s AD100 designers Tony Ingrao and Randy Kemper, who have created private homes for Beth and Howard Stern, Kim Catrell, G.E.’s former CEO Jack Welch, and Donny Deutsch, have designed the interiors of the Baccarat Residences, the luxury high rise hotel-condominium tower located on 53rd Street across from the Museum of Modern Art. This project marked Ingrao’s first full-scale development. It was also Baccarat’s first residential project in North America, and Ingrao was the perfect choice for the interiors. “Baccarat has always been an inspiration to me. From the jewelry to the tableware, the brand has been a symbol of true luxury and sophistication for more than 200 years,” he says.

space to create a real sense of warmth.” For the Baccarat penthouse, a $60 million duplex of over 7,000 square feet, with expansive views of Central Park, Ingrao custom-designed a dramatic marble staircase.

State-of-the-Art For the Baccarat building’s residential lobby, Ingrao went for opulence, with floors of white marble with black insets, and walls of gray-mirrored glass and lustrous wood paneling. Baccarat apartment owners can avail themselves of the many high-level amenities that one would expect in a modern luxury building, including hotel services such as a 24-hour concierge, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a private dining room, and housekeeping services. There is also a fullservice, 10,000-square-foot spa with a 55-foot pool to enjoy.

60 Million Penthouse “We do not sell a look. We sell luxury; we sell comfort,” said Kemper. For the interiors of the 60 Baccarat residences, Ingrao built upon the French brand’s storied history and introduced contemporary touches that appeal to today’s discerning buyer. “The name Baccarat conveys a wealth of attributes — luxury, exceptional quality, artisanship, and beauty,” Ingrao says. A signature Baccarat fixture has been placed in the foyer of each residence, reflecting the firm’s reputation for artistry. The entrance to each apartment features a custom-made door handle with Baccarat crystal inlay. Ingrao used solid white oak floors and a natural palette throughout the units, creating an inviting yet sophisticated environment. “We selected some of the most distinctive wood in the world for the flooring and entryways, and incorporated amazing custom bronze-work crackled with crystal coming through,” Ingrao says. “We used natural elements in a modern way, and played with how the light translated through each

Design Philosophy “Every client is a new experience for us. We try to interpret them, rather than put a look on them,” Ingrao says. In creating the Baccarat units, the natural palette and combination of warmth and sophistication is the perfect backdrop for a wide array of tastes of future owners. For instance, having worked with wealthy clients around the world for many years, Ingrao has noticed that the younger generation of moneyed homeowners today are not as interested in antique furnishings. “Clients don’t want antiques anymore,” he says. “They want cool stuff that doesn’t tie you down or doesn’t seem too precious. Something you’re not going to be afraid to sit on.” However, he notes, younger clients are interested in buying art. A tenet of Ingrao and Kemper’s design philosophy is that each client, and each project, has its own distinct style. ingraoinc.com Social Life

I’m WITH HER: HILLARY FLoWERS GETS THE PoPULAR voTE By Bannon raCe

T

he last time we caught up with this fashion maven, real estate up-and-comer, and front-of-the-line men’s bespoke shirt designer, Hillary Flowers was on the cusp of closing some high-profile real estate deals in the city with Citi Habitats. As the summer draws to a close, Hillary is just getting going. Not only is she still cutting her chops on the home biz, but she’s continuing to turn heads with her acumen for fashion. Next up? She’s the maestro for the opening night of Fashion Week in New York City on September 8 at Skyroom: Hillary Flowers and Manhattan Wine Group present Belle D’Amour, a lingerie runway show featuring Jaki Nelson singing “What We Wanna Do.” First of all, give us some insight into Belle D’Amour. I think the Belle D’Amour website says it best: ‘Lingerie is like jewelry — it’s all beautiful —but some you like more than others. It is always a good reason to treat yourself — it is always a good thing to be spoiled. Belle D’Amour is very feminine, delicate, provocative, flirtatious, beautiful, sexy, and luxurious. It will make you feel exactly like that.’ It’s truly one of a kind, and I am thrilled for the opportunity to showcase their designs and kick off New York Fashion Week. What’s the most rewarding part of doing the fashion shows? I love being able to attract media to these great brands because they really deserve attention. It’s exciting to work with designers and help them get truly noticed. Would you say that fashion is your true passion? After all, you are involved in lots of projects! I definitely have a passion for fashion. After earning a degree in fine art at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, I moved to New York and have paved my way through the industry, starting as a designer selling one-of-a-kind designs to boutiques in New York City. I then had the opportunity to own my own boutique on the Lower East Side for five years, Hillary Flowers Designer Collective, before transitioning to acquiring 20 Peacocks. How did that all start? I’d say that I was always a creative person, and I loved to redesign my own clothing. People took a shine to my designs, and loved the unique and creative wardrobe I was creating. I started taking garments to boutiques. One thing led to another, and

I eventually had my own store, which eventually became a collective. I transitioned out of the boutique business, acquired 20 Peacocks, and continue to promote and feature brands in fashion shows . . . which I love. What really impresses you? Definitely custom clothing. That really comes through in 20 Peacocks, where we select various threads and button colors. It’s exciting to explore details like contrast fabrics, cuffs, and collar types. I love 20 Peacocks. tell us more. 20 Peacocks sells bespoke, custom, made-to-measure button down shirts. 20peacocks.com is by appointment and clients can email me at info@20peacocks.com, or feel free to call or text at 718.674.5873 to schedule an appointment.

CHABAd north haven in the HAMPTONS By Lizabeth Zindel

M

y favorite philosopher, Maimonides, once said “Teach thy tongue to say ‘I do not know’ and thou shalt progress.” The meaning I derive from this is that in order to grow, one must search for new ideas. Recently, in search of more than poolside relaxation I caught up with Rabbi Berel Lerman, the director of Chabad North Haven in the Hamptons, and asked him several questions to expand my understanding of the Chabad community on the East End. He, accompanied by his wife, Brocha, kindly took the time to answer my questions. What kind of value does Chabad seek to add to the Hamptons community? We seek to offer an enriching experience with something for the whole family. Whether it’s through our weekly synagogue services, community Shabbat dinners, Kabbalah classes for adults, social events for young professionals, Sunday kids’ entertainment hour, or our Hebrew School that makes house calls, we endeavor to create a meaningful experience for people to learn, grow, and connect. As community leader what are your primary goals? Brocha and I are here to serve the physical and spiritual needs of the community, and, trust me, there are many things that fall into those two categories. Overall, I would say my primary objectives are to bring people together and be a force that unifies and uplifts through focusing on the good in everyone. In your opinion what is the meaning of spirituality? At our core we are all spiritual beings. Our spiritual core needs to be nurtured. People often overlook this vital need, which can lead to imbalance in one’s life. How do you stay involved with the Jewish community in The Hamptons? In addition to the programs mentioned earlier, I find that people are a lot more relaxed and open to personal change while in the beautiful environs of the East End. I often create tailor-made counseling and studying schedules with people to better cater to their time and interests. I am also part of a wonderful team of colleagues who run Chabad in East Hampton, Southampton, and Watermill and who offer a wide array

of programming to serve the needs of the Jewish community. What motivated you to pursue a life in your field? The teachings of the Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who was one of the most influential Jewish leaders of modern times. He inspired a new generation of rabbis and rebbetzins to do whatever they can to make this world a better place!

One-Stop-Shop for Event Essentials By Carolina Lima What are some of the most popular furniture requests right now? Our outdoor Somerset Collection was very popular this summer. The resin wicker pieces have cushions that come in three colors, and the pieces can be mixed and matched to create custom configurations. Clients appreciate the customization options, and used our collection for cocktail hours, after parties, and casual outdoor lounge spaces. As we make our way into the fall and events are held indoors, we’re seeing more and more requests for our Metro Collection, which is modular leather lounge furniture, in white or black, that can be mixed and matched in endless combinations for a custom look.

arty Rental Ltd, founded by Michael and Sunny Halperin in 1970, began as a secondary line of business to Oprandy’s Liquor Store in Englewood, New Jersey. The business is an American success story. At first they were a tiny operation and simply rented tables, chairs, and glasses to the store’s customers. Less than two years later, they expanded into a garage behind the store with 100 wooden chairs, one complete set of china, 50 tables, and other party necessities. The business grew so fast that in 1980 they moved into a 10,000-square-foot facility. From there, the sky was the limit as they sealed deals in New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut, D.C., the Hamptons, Philadelphia, and beyond, eventually relocating to a 350,000-square-foot warehouse in Teterboro, one of three warehouses to service a large swath of the East Coast. Party Rental now carries 85,000 chairs, 950,000 pieces of chinaware, 18,000 tables, a furniture collection, and thousands of other items to help clients bring their event visions to life. Party Rental has a wide variety of products in quantities that can accommodate events of any size, whether it’s an intimate dinner for two or cocktails for 2,000. Social Life sat down with Alan Gottlich, Party Rental’s executive vice president, to learn about the booming business and get a glimpse into the world of party rentals.

Are there certain party themes you see a lot of during the summer months? Rustic chic and farm-to-table events continue to be very popular. Many clients love natural elegance and focus on local, seasonal ingredients. We tend to see a lot of red, white, and blue around the summer holidays. In the Hamptons, we see quite a few clambakes throughout the summer. Do you have any helpful tips for planning a once-in-a-lifetime event? Assemble a great team of vendors. You’ll want to surround yourself with professionals who understand your vision and who can lend expertise and suggestions when you need them. Plan ahead; place your orders early; and, most important, have fun! We love to see clients who don’t sweat the small stuff and really just enjoy the entire process. What’s Party Rental’s secret sauce when it comes to customer service? We have a great company culture that sets the foundation and tone for everything we do. Our five core values — respect, teamwork, innovation, excellence, and safety — drive us every day. partyrentalsltd.com

How do you tailor your services to help clients reach their desired event space? We ask lots of questions and really listen to our clients’ needs, desires, strengths, and challenges. Whether we’re working with a caterer who needs a linen recommendation, designers who aren’t sure how many glasses to order, or clients who have never planned an event before, we take the time to get to know them and their events so we can identify places where we can help. Cindy Guyer Restaurateur

Giselle Singer–Songwriter By Cecilia Morales

By Carlos Lacayo

I

f you’ve picked up a romance novel within the past twenty 20 years, chances are that you’ve run into a cover of Cindy Guyer getting cozy with the likes of Fabio or John DeSalvo. Becoming a famous model by accident, Guyer has graced more than 1,500 covers as well as had leading roles in 25 films and 30 national commercials. Cindy has also developed the concept for the Oxygen series Mr. Romance, which starred KISS’s Gene Simmons, Fred Greer, and others. Even with all of these accomplishments under her belt, Cindy’s biggest accomplishment to date has to be her latest venture, her restaurant and wine bar, Guyer’s.

Change Me S i n g e r- s o n g w r i t e r Giselle has been involved with music since childhood, but in recent years she’s really opened up to her audience. Her four-song EP is titled Change Me. “Each song is very different from the next, which goes with my personality,” she said. With a background in opera, Giselle’s musical career blossomed bit by bit. “I went to a performing arts high school and I would always be too loud,” she said. Thankfully, she had an encouraging voice teacher. “She gave me a ticket to go see an opera and asked if I ever considered training this way. Once I started, my voice naturally started finding its place.”

The Powder Room With many future plans in store for Guyer’s, including a café, the most ambitious has to be The Powder Room, a space decorated with all of the covers of Cindy’s romance novels. Guyer emphasizes the Powder Room hasn’t been done yet and wants to be 100 percent sure Guyer’s can stand the test of time. “This is the kind of bar that could be here for 100 years, after we’re all long gone,”says Cindy.

Guyer’s Guyer’s is open on the weekends from noon to 3 a.m. and on weekdays from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Given its proximity to Lincoln Center, Guyer’s is an ideal stop after catching your favorite performance. “I’m so proud of this bar. It turned out better than I thought it would; it fell into place beautifully,” proclaims the Upper West Side native. “I think my place will be a home away from home for a lot of people.” Cindy is also working on a series of books with Cathryn Fox, whose books have been on the best seller lists of the New York Times and USA Today. The books will be connected to Guyer’s wine bar. guyersnyc.com

Emmy Award Winning Show As her music developed, Giselle soon realized that there was more to be discovered. “I woke up in the middle of the night and I wrote all these songs,” she said. “When I met my producer, Adam Tilzer, I said I want to sell them and he’s, like, ‘Why don’t you do it?’ ” Giselle’s decision to follow her musical instincts paid off. After collaborating with Tilzer on songs for the Emmy Award–winning FX comedy Louie, the singer gained recognition for singing “The Diarrhea Song.” “That song got me through another part of my career,” she said. “It’s all thanks to ‘Diarrhea Song,’ which is pretty funny.”

Watermark Bar Having played at the Red Bull Arena, Rockwood Music Hall, and the Stone Pony, Giselle is wrapping up a series of performances that ends with a show on September 10 at Watermark bar on Pier 15 in New York. She also has plans to release more music. “We’re releasing a single in the next couple of months . . . with a video,” she added. watermarkny.com

Talk to the Fairy Godmother of Divorce

All the World’s His Stage

By Lola Blythe

By Nicole Clarke

C

rowned the “Fairy Godmother of Divorce” by the New York Post’s Julia Marsh, Nicole Noonan understands the nuances of the divorce system from the inside. The esteemed CEO of Novitas US is frequently quoted and has appeared in national media as an expert on divorce-related issues. Before beginning Novitas US, Nicole practiced as a matrimonial attorney. She was instrumental in the litigation of many complex family-law cases involving both financial and custody disputes. Her cases included some of the leading reported-on cases in these areas. Remember the vicious divorce battle in the movie War of the Roses? No one wants that torture. Novitas US funds individuals going through a divorce to ensure “a level playing field.” Her firm provides non-recourse cash advances for divorce litigants. This means a client need not feel pressured to accept unfavorable terms because a spouse has cut off funding, and the money a client receives is payable only when the settlement provides enough money for reimbursement. Nicole is committed to promoting self-confidence in clients so that they may feel empowered to overcome hurdles in their personal relationships. Nicole holds a BA from Boston College and a JD from Seton Hall University School of Law. Nicole is an active member of the New Jersey Bar Association, New York Women’s Bar Association, and the Family Law Inns of Court. Additionally, she is a certified NY mediator. She is a supporter of the American Heart Association. Recognized as a leader in New York Magazine’s “New York’s Women Leaders in the Law 2014,” Nicole has been seen on Good Morning America, Bloomberg TV, WLNY’s The Couch, and WPIX. She was featured in the Huffington Post’s “Women in Business,” American Banker, The Economist, Forbes Magazine, Fortune Magazine, and the New York Times for her pioneering concept of divorce funding. Nicole resides in New York and the Hamptons with her real estate appraiser husband, Steven Knobel.

fter 38 years as an event producer, Michael Cerbelli has solidified his place as a master of his craft in NYC and beyond. His passion for over-the-top performances started early. “I wanted to become a performer and then I realized how much I loved the back end of it, the production part, putting the show together and what happens behind the scenes . . . I love being the director . . . Everything you do is a stage. It’s making an experience happen from beginning to end.” Cerbelli was the go-to for the weddings of Billy Joel, Robert De Niro, and Sir Paul McCartney. He also produced the birthday party and New Year’s Eve celebrations for the King of Morocco.

The Hot List 2017 Michael launched his solo company, Cerbelli Creative, in 2016, and he has big ideas for the future. “I have a ten-year plan for making my company a staple of the industry. Cerbelli Creative is where you’re going to get the best events, the best product, and the most educated team of people who care about your event.” Michael always has the pulse on the latest event and wedding trends. He is also the creator of The Hot List, the event industry’s must-have experience, where he focuses on the newest and most inspiring event and entertainment products. Cerbelli showcases these items for industry professionals during a fast-paced and entertaining 90-minute presentation in cities across America.
