PUBLISHER’S LETTER

August is a great time to be in the Hamptons. Summer is at its peak and the time is perfect to relax at the beach, or spend a day by the pool. I suggest unplugging from the digital world and let your real life unfold instead of spending your time on social media. Wellness seems to be on everybody’s mind nowadays. Biking, yoga and getting exercise is at the forefront of my mind on the weekend. Spending time in the Hamptons and getting fit will make everything feel better. With many wellness spots scattered all over the Hamptons, it’s easy to find the perfect place to workout, meditate, cycle, or take a yoga class. As the summer continues, so do the charity events. Recently, the Southampton Hospital had their annual charity gala and I believe it is one of the most worthwhile causes. If you missed it you can still contribute at southamptonhospital.org Summer is going by quick, and it’s time to spend some long weekends soaking it all up. We all deserve it! Enjoy August!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

“The crickets felt it was their duty to warn everybody that summertime cannot last forever. Even on the most beautiful days in the whole year — the days when summer is changing into fall — the crickets spread the rumor…”

Devorah Rose, Nomi Ellenson Photography

~ E.B. White, Charlotte’s Web I think summers can be endless if you carry the feelings the season evokes within you throughout the year. Sometimes you have to ignore the crickets. The best way to hold on to summer is figure out what it is about warm days that makes you happy. Personally, one of my favorite aspects of the summer is driving. I love my journey out to the East End. Whether I’m driving out by myself or with a loved one, I always enjoy getting lost in deep thoughts or having intense conversations because I always stumble upon new insights. How do you enjoy your drive out to the Hamptons? Perhaps you blast Metallica in your convertible, listen to Wu Tang in your family’s old Bentley, enjoy a bit of Bach in a vintage GMC pickup . . . or possibly music isn’t at all a part of your drive out East. The thing is that when people drive, they imagine. Driving allows your mind to swirl and enjoy the open road in a meaningful way. Driving is a type of meditation. It’s a joy as well as a time to reflect and gain greater understanding. For many, including Jack Kerouac, being on the road allows a sense of freedom. As August unfolds, I hope everyone takes the time to reflect upon these glorious months and find their favorite pieces of summer.

ALISON LOU JEWELERY SOLID GOLD EMOJI By Lizabeth Zindel

T

he whimsical jewelry brand Alison Lou draws inspiration from digital forms of communication. Pieces from the signature collection are inspired by emojis. It’s hard not to smile when seeing familiar symbols from text messages — a face with two hearts for eyes or one wearing black sunglasses — transformed into 14K gold pendants. The cheeky line has been spotted on celebrities, including Lucy Hale, Blake Lively, and Beyoncé. The brand Alison Lou was founded by native New Yorker Alison Chemla. A child of the digital age who graduated from Bard College with an art history degree, Chemla was fascinated by the prevalence of emoticons throughout her life. In 2012, after honing her design and technical skills at Finn and House of Waris, Chemla

branched off to launch her own fine jewelry collection based on the deceptive simplicity of modern emoticons. She aimed to combine that ephemeral digital lexicon with the timeless heirloom appeal of fine jewelry. Recently, Chemla collaborated with Hasbro to create The Alison Lou x Hasbro Collection. The partnership celebrates three of Hasbro’s quintessential toys and games — Monopoly, Mr. Potato Head, and Twister. The cheerful line is filled with pieces crafted from 14K gold and featuring a selection of colorful gemstones and Alison Lou’s signature hand-painted enamel work. alisonlou.com

LOVEMONSTER DIAMONDS ARE FOR TODAY By Anthony Michael

I

Amish Shah

f you’re a true who’s who, you may have caught the recent launch of ALTR Created Diamonds’ exciting new brand, LOVEMONSTER at JCK Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Resort. Guests Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi, former stars of ABC’s The Bachelor, made a special appearance to celebrate the unveiling of LOVEMONSTER engagement rings and jewelry. It’s not unusual to have that much fanfare for such a storied brand. ALTR Created Diamonds, forged exclusively by RIAM Group, is revolutionizing the diamond and jewelry industry by pushing the limits of innovation and craftsmanship and designing beyond what nature can provide to discerning diamond owners. As the world’s only complete and exclusive solution for created diamonds, ALTR’s mission is to rekindle the desire of diamonds. The man behind ALTR’s success is Amish Shah, the president of R. A. Riam Group and ALTR Created Diamonds. A native of India, Shah has grown the renowned company in the United States and led its expansion into Australia, South Africa, Mauritius, India, Israel, and the European Union. Amish’s foresight, fueled by more than 25 years of tradition, has catapulted ALTR Created Diamonds to become the industry leader in high-quality created diamonds and jewelry. With the introduction of LOVEMONSTER, ALTR Created Diamonds’ first consumer-facing brand, Social Life wanted to know more about Amish Shah and the industry that he’s rocking to its core.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

LOVEMONSTER is a bold name for your consumerfacing brand. What exactly does it mean to you? Love is a force beyond our control. LOVEMONSTER pays homage to this intensity of love.

What’s missing now? What we forget is that a diamond is about the magnificence of love and romance. It’s about connecting with today’s modern couple, and LOVEMONSTER stands for the intensity of the relationship between a modern couple. So, it’s really about a shift in a viewpoint, from the notion of forever to the intensity of today. Yes. That’s what LOVEMONSTER stands for. The true codes of diamonds are about desire and impact. LOVEMONSTER brings that back: the passion and energy of modern love, the intensity of how one feels for the other in that moment. How do you react to those who question the difference between a mined diamond and a created diamond? Many say created diamonds are far superior. I was born into a family that’s been in this business for three generations. We are not closing the mined diamond business. I am here to bring innovation that will offer the consumer a choice between an earth mined diamond and a created diamond . . . and let them decide what tickles them. When you look at today’s world, choice is what a consumer should get. Every industry has gone through this — it is thinking out of the box. Once the consumer sees the value, and the product connects with them, the biggest hurdle is the supply of the product that was always in place. So, you are rocking the industry not just with diamonds, but in your philosophy. Yes, my philosophy of embracing change has enabled me to create the perfect company — one that restores the value of love to diamonds. ALTR Created Diamonds are all that a diamond can be, only better! LOVEMONSTER represents the best of ALTR Created Diamonds. It brings the best experience and the finest design to the consumer. ROCK & GEMS JEWELRY JEWELRY MASTERPIECES CAPTURE VIVID OCEAN HUES By Blaire Bass

Sig Ward

I

n this day and age of “the ultimate accessory,” it’s a rather difficult task to sort through the overwhelming variety of luxury options at our fingertips. This summer, Social Life accessory editors went on a mission to find the perfect accent to our summer soirée styles. Our pick: Rock & Gems Jewelry, the winner of O Magazine Editor’s Choice Award for best design in 2017. Based in Manhattan Beach, California, this inventive fine jewelry line brings fashionistas modern and elegant designs inspired by the beauty its founder and designer, Sig Ward, finds in art, architecture, fashion, and nature. And the jewelry pieces are truly stunning collections of art. We particularly fell in love with the rings as the perfect accessory to a sophisticated, yet simple Hamptons attire. Get the bling from the ring, not the outfit! Evoking the blue and green hues of the ocean on a sunny Southampton day, our favorite is a glittering and gorgeous 10 carat rainbow moonstone set in 14K rose gold, surrounded by diamonds (pictured above).

The Israeli-born designer was one the youngest of five children and grew up on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Her designs reflect her magnetic draw to the calming vivid hues of the ocean. Her love of jewelry came from her mother. “My dad didn’t buy my mom jewelry as he had seven mouths to feed, and for as long as I can remember, she would save up and buy herself beautiful jewelry,” explains Sig as she smiles. “Later, she was very generous with her four daughters, buying us significant pieces for meaningful milestones.” This was the start of Sig’s appreciation for jewelry as the ultimate accessory. Sig launched her jewelry line after friends kept asking to buy jewelry she had made for herself. She uses precious and semiprecious stones (opal, aquamarine, chrysoprase, for example), combining natural elements to create alluring, chic, and elegant works of art. We just love her pieces — all of them! Rock & Gems is carried at Four Seasons resorts in Maui, Kona, Lanai, Palm Beach, and Anguilla. In addition to appearing in O Magazine, her jewelry has also appeared in Vogue UK, Brides, Essence, Cosmopolitan, Nylon Magazine, Palm Beach Illustrated, and others. SUMMER SCENTS HAMPTONS STYLE BOND NO. 9’S HAMPTONS COLLECTION By Serena Firstenburg

Social Life’s beauty editors scoured the perfume landscape this summer to find our favorite summer scents. We discovered that Bond No. 9 created delectable scents named after New York beaches and we fell into smell heaven with two named after our favorite summer destination: the Hamptons. Check out Bond No. 9’s other savvy scents, including Shelter Island and Sag Harbor.

BOND NO. 9 HAMPTONS

BOND NO. 9 MONTAUK

Sure, the gardens, the country lanes, and the white sand are visually stunning. But another lure of the Hamptons is nature’s fragrance — the refreshing yet intoxicating scents of salty sea and greenery, farmland, and things fabulous. It’s an addictive whiff of well-being, of fresh and clean, of time out on a precious cusp of land that fronts the Atlantic. You can always access the South Fork by helicopter, shuttle bus, SUV, or the LIRR, but Bond No. 9 just bottled this New York neighborhood in its latest New York-centric eau de parfum, Bond No. 9 Hamptons, so now you can be transported there at a moment’s notice.

We love this bright and summery rainbow colored bottle! The world’s first summer sunset perfume, inspired by Montauk. A quirkily quaint fishing village greets the Studio 54 crowd. (Trust us, this fragrance is like no other.) A shared urban-smalltown, tangy-sultry, surfside-at-twilight scent, with a hint of forest-bythe-sea.

Notes: lime blossom, bergamot, white jasmine, magnolia, amber, sandalwood $300 (100 ml) SocialLifeMagazine.com

Notes: bergamot, hyacinth, honeysuckle, amber, driftwood, silver maple, red oak $300 (100 ml)

LUXURY BEYOND STARS IN KOH SAMUI, THAILAND By Gregory DelliCarpini Jr.

T

he island of Koh Samui is known as one of the most beautiful in the world, so the hotels have the difficult task of competing with the majesty of the island’s natural wonders. Koh Samui resorts are stunning and awe-inspiring, but the InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort has me reconsidering what I once thought luxury to be. The hotel features seven pools, in seven different colors; a private beach; and four restaurants serving an array of both international and local cuisines. Clearly, the designers were able to indulge their fantasies. A perfect example is the island’s most spectacular infinity pool, with 280-degree views of coconut plantations and the Gulf of Thailand, the perfect setting to take in the island’s famous auburn sunsets. You are immediately placed in a

Zen-like state upon arrival as you are greeted with sea views on an expansive terrace. To impose order on the sprawling space, the designers have positioned large abstract dragon statues by local artists to demarcate particular areas. The guest rooms show stylish restraint, featuring an elegant aesthetic in subtle tones and modern Thai furniture. If you should need more help relaxing, check out the cliffside Baan Thai spa that provides holistic treatments like the Siamese herbal body scrub and a healing tea ritual. The InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort offers luxury beyond stars. InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort samui.intercontinental.com Social Life

THE MALE BAG PURE MAGIC By Anthony Michael

The difference between fact and fiction is always such a fine line. Nonetheless, as we delve into our August picks, we tell no lies.

Alchemy Home Company alchemyhomecompany.com

Its website says it best: “Whether capturing the music of a band in fragrance, or mixing up Old World botanical magic for your skin, Alchemy Home Company crafts its products from natural botanical materials and oils.” Guys, this stuff is great for gifts . . . even to yourself. We are emboldened by the aptly named Warrior Oil ($47), which, when applied to your mug, improves the skin’s moisture barrier for enhanced cellular function and hydration. Ideal for all skin types, including acne prone. Order some Amarok Sore Muscle Balm ($11) while you’re at it. Your joints and muscles will thank you.

Erno Laszlo ernolaszlo.com Everyone makes soap. Nothing magical about that . . . unless it’s soap by Erno Laszlo. No, it’s not as economical as Irish Spring, but, like we’ve said: guys, you gotta look beyond Duane Reed. Try the Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar ($38). It deeply detoxifies, exfoliates, and hydrates skin with 26 minerals, to protect and restore skin’s own mineral levels. Its signature black color (so masculine) transforms to white foam when you lather up.

Related Garments relatedgarments.com This relative newcomer to the unmentionables market was started by two brothers with a motto in mind: a successful look starts with a solid foundation. We see that in the Hamptons, but it applies everywhere. In this case, we love matching undies and socks selections, especially when they splash with color. Our advice? Start with a Boxer Brief & Sock Package. You can go slow with a 3-pack Weekend Package ($90) or a 10-pack Long Week Package ($195). Do yourself a favor when planning your winter vacas and leave the old stuff at home.

SHAPE HOUSE OPENS POP-UP IN EAST HAMPTON HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME By Lizabeth Zindel

T

his summer, Shape House, a premier sweat lodge in Los Angeles, has a pop-up in East Hampton that will run through September. Shape House is a favorite among celebrities, including Selena Gomez, and has been featured in the New York Times and LA Weekly, and on Huffington Post and Entertainment Tonight. Sweating is an ancient wellness practice that dates back to Greek bathhouses in the 6th century B.C.E. Sweating is a natural form of detoxification that helps the body to rid itself of contaminants, resulting in weight loss, brighter skin, deeper sleep, and increased energy. Sweating also strengthens immunity, assists with mood improvement, stress relief, and hormone balance. At Shape House, the sweat beds are equipped with FAR infrared technology to provide a deep, penetrating heat that warms the body gradually, resulting in a profoundly cleansing sweat. During this process, you can recline in the comfy bed and even catch up on your favorite television shows. By the time you leave, your body has burned 700 to 1,400 calories. The company is the brainchild of Sophie Chiche, a FrenchAmerican entrepreneur, who has always been motivated by a strong desire to contribute to wellness. With Shape House, she dreamed of creating an oasis for rejuvenation where people could recharge in a safe place. She chose to launch the brand on September 21, International Day of Peace, because she believes that the more people sweat, the more people are at peace. She also believes that sweating should play a part in people’s routine in a holistic way and that Shape House helps people physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually. “When you sweat and detox regularly, everything works better,” Chiche says. After a successful weekend event with Shape House in Montauk, Chiche decided to open the pop-up in East Hampton. “The crowd in the Hamptons fits us well because they are really innovative and interested in taking care of themselves,” she says. “It was also fun for us to think of doing a pop-up as a launch pad for our upcoming New York store.” In mid-September, Shape House plans on launching its first location in NYC in the Flat Iron district. Later in the year, it expects to open a second Manhattan location in Soho. Shape House 66 Newtown Lane East Hampton Open 8 am to 5 pm (weekdays) till 6 pm (weekends). SocialLifeMagazine.com

PICOSURE FOCUS THE ROLLS-ROYCE OF SKIN REJUVENATION By Frances Gormley

A

nna Avaliani, MD, one of the best physician artists on Park Avenue, specializes in non-invasive cosmetic procedures. Celebrities from the worlds of fashion, sports, and entertainment as well as corporate executives come to Dr. Avaliani for her exceptional experience, artistry, and attention to detail. These attributes combined with her warm and caring personality have brought many referrals to her growing practice. Her state-of-the-art laser center was honored with the prestigious Cynosure Center of Excellence Award. She was also named a RealSelf Top Doctor, an award given for her contribution to medicine and patient education. Dr. Avaliani is a true laser expert, offering the latest technology available on the market to treat virtually all skin concerns. One of her absolute favorite treatments is the revolutionary skin-rejuvenation treatment PicoSure Focus. It’s fast, effective, and treats many skin concerns, hence it’s the gold standard treatment for skin rejuvenation. PicoSure treats dark spots, sun spots, age spots, acne scars, wrinkles, surgical scars, stretch marks, and more — in less than 15 minutes and with virtually no downtime. One morning last week, I went to Dr. Avaliani’s chic office to have a slew of sunspots removed from my face, including one the size of a dime in the middle of my cheek. I felt comfortable with this physician who has impeccable credentials. I knew this award-winning laser surgeon would expertly choose the proper attachments and settings for my exact skin type and skin issues. Pico derives from picosecond, which is one trillionth of a second. PicoSure delivers picosecond bursts of energy — rather than heat like other lasers — to gently target and more effectively eliminate problem areas without harming surrounding tissue. PicoSure has trademarked the term Skin Cell Activation, which is a way of describing how PicoSure works. It literally activates cells to produce important proteins that signal other cells to begin a healing response. Not only will my sunspots fade in a few weeks, but the ultra-short bursts of energy have signaled my body to produce collagen and elastin for improved facial rejuvenation. The number of treatments can vary from one for simpler sunspots to several for wrinkling and tattoos. What was the treatment like? It was a multi-step process that Dr. Avaliani explained carefully as she proceeded. No numbing is required; I held a hose that flowed cold air as the laser passed over my face. It was easy to direct the soothing air wherever the

Before

After

laser went. Dr. Avaliani encouraged me to speak up if I needed a break at any point, and she asked me how I doing as we went along, but really I was fine. Because the bursts of energy are ultra-short, the feeling came and went literally one trillionth of a second at a time. Even though I had sunspots on every section of my face, and some fine lines above my lip, the entire treatment was over in just minutes. Dr. Avaliani applied sunscreen to my face, gave me simple, printed instructions, and said I could apply makeup immediately. For a few hours my cheeks were pinker than usual and my skin felt tight, but by late afternoon all pinkness and sensation had disappeared. There’s no real downtime — for anyone. A week later, things are progressing exactly as Dr. Avaliani predicted. Although my sunspots have darkened — the expected phase before they fade away in a few weeks — their pigment is shattering. My body’s healing response is underway. An unanticipated bonus for having sunspots on my nose is that I already have smaller pores for the first time ever! Expect the best of care from Dr. Avaliani’s practice, from a warm welcome to a caring follow-up call after receiving the best in cosmetic medicine. DR . MICHELLE ZWEIFLER A DAY IN THE LIFE By Cabot Loring

W

e spend a lot of time talking about plastic surgeons and the procedures they perform to make our valued readers feel good in their skin and happy again. But, have you ever wondered what it’s actually like to be a master of rejuvenation? We asked Dr. Michelle Zweifler, whose practice spans everything from simple injections to full restorative surgery, to fill us in (no pun intended . . . though once August hits, we could use a little restoration of our own!). Let’s go early. How does your day start? Well, I wake up early and most days either start with a 7 am surgery or a 7 am conference. When I’m in the office, it can be a wide range of what’s next. What’s a typical day like? There’s no such thing as a typical day. Some days I spend doing surgery. When I’m in my office, I see patients for Botox and filler injections. I see post-op patients to see how their face or breasts are healing. I see new consults, including those who want a mommy makeover. I take out stitches. It’s a nice mix and really cool, because no two days and no two patients are exactly alike. Are there bumps in the road? Of course. This is plastic surgery, so I need to tell people there are limits to what surgery can do, and there is downtime, and sometimes there is swelling and discomfort. It’s about being honest and discussing the wound-healing process so people know what to expect. Everyone wants instant gratification . . . but that’s not always realistic. You’re known for being punctual, but can you always control that? Sometimes someone wants to see me right away because of an accident. I always try to stop what I’m doing to fix a real problem, like a facial laceration. Also, sometimes a patient brings along a friend who spontaneously wants a Botox shot, or wants to consult with me about a mommy makeover. I like to accommodate people whenever I can. What’s the highlight of every day? Helping people! Happy patients! People coming back and telling me their back doesn’t hurt after a breast reduction, that their clothes fit better after liposuction, that they went back to how they used to look ten years ago after a facelift. These patients keep me going!

Photography by Vital Agibalow for HENSEL

I also feel gratified when a new patient comes as a referral from an existing patient or a fellow physician. This happens frequently enough to brighten many of my days. How do you take care of yourself ? I go to the gym pretty regularly to keep myself in shape, to look good and feel good! DAVID SHUSTERMAN, MD ERECTIONWAVE - MALE ENHANCEMENT. NO NEED FOR VIAGRA ANYMORE. By Frances Gormley

E

rectile dysfunction (ED) has been conquered by the celebrity board-certifed urologist, Dr. David Shusterman. Did you know that more than half the male population between 40 and 60 has ED to some degree? If each one of these millions of men came to Dr. Shusterman’s practice, he would be offered a treatment plan that would eliminate his problem. Dr. Shusterman guarantees success when a patient chooses to follow his recommended course of treatment. This may seem like an astonishing claim, but it’s true because Dr. Shusterman has an array of options — to solve every ED issue and to enhance male performance for men without ED.

Urological Expert on Male Enhancement Dr. Shusterman is the founder of NY Urology, which has a Midtown NYC location that treats all urological conditions, but his main interests are ED, kidney stones, overactive bladder, and all prostate conditions. Any man who has ED would be wise to seek treatment from a board-certified urologist who is a specialist in ED because not every urologist offers advanced treatment options. Viagra by itself is not a cure for ED. Dr. Shusterman prides himself on painless, advanced procedures that are minimally invasive.

ErectionWave Method Dr. Shusterman originated a proprietary protocol called ErectionWave. This method for enhancing male sexual performance comprises treatment options that can be used selectively or in combination — depending on a patient’s diagnosis as well as his preferences. The options include painless soundwaves to help restore proper blood flow and sensation to the penis. Additional protocols include testosterone replacement, growth hormone replacement, stem-cell rejuvenation via a P-shot (aka Priapus shot, platelet-rich plasma extracted from the patient’s own blood), and temporary medication.

Male Enhancement Before any treatment, Dr. Shusterman takes a complete history and performs advanced diagnostic tests, including measuring hormone levels, and painlessly checking blood flow and nerve function of the penis. The cornerstone of the ErectionWave method is the soundwave treatment (also known as shockwave, and LI-ESTW: low intensity shockwave therapy). This non-invasive treatment has over 40 clinical studies proving its efficacy. It is the only treatment to address the principal root causes of ED.

Gently pulsating waves open existing blood vessels (by breaking up calcifications that are present), and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels in addition to increasing penile sensitivity. Increased blood flow results in harder, more sustainable erections. Dr. Shusterman enhances this treatment with a blend of medication that is prescribed only temporarily. This blend is more potent, less expensive, and faster acting than what’s on the market today. This combination approach speeds up the soundwave therapy’s efficacy. Dr. Shusterman’s goal is to provide a drug-free solution to ED. Sometimes ED needs additional treatment with hormonal therapy and P-shot therapy. Dr. Shusterman’s overriding concern is to restore function as carefully and as less-invasively as possible. The ErectionWave method has dramatically reduced the need for a penile inflatable prosthesis in his practice. ErectionWave therapy also benefits men who have good function but are looking for an extra boost to their sexual prowess. Say goodbye to Viagra forever! WELCOME TO THE ZONE By Somers Farkas

W

e have long heard diet and exercise can help us live longer, but don’t we really want to live longer and healthier?

WELCOME TO THE BLUE ZONES Blue Zones are those geographically defined, demographically verified areas where people live the longest and healthiest. This information appeared in 2005, in National Geographic Magazine’s cover story, “The Secrets of a Long Life.” In this piece, the author, explorer, and endurance cyclist Dan Buettner identified five geographic areas where people live the longest: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece, and Loma Linda, California. Loma Linda has a large Seventh Day Adventist population, and this religious sect encourages vegetarianism and a healthy lifestyle. (Seventh Day Adventists as a group live an average of 10 years beyond America’s life expectancy of 79 years.) The term “Blue Zone” derived from the blue circles that researchers drew around map areas with the highest concentration of nonagenarians and centenarians. The secret to their long lives? Healthful diet, exercise, and engagement.

Royce Pinkwater

FAST FORWARD TO 2017 The impact investor and real estate entrepreneur Royce Pinkwater has long invested in companies that align with her passions: protecting the environment and health. It was this latter concern that prompted her to examine the natural foods industry. “We are as healthy as what we eat, and I realized that we consume many foods that do our bodies damage; even popular waters are devoid of nutrients or saturated with bitter tasting stevia and erythritol. I have visited the Mediterranean for years, and marveled over the outstanding health and energy of the people who ate locally grown foods — none of whom denied themselves an abundance of fruits and vegetables. It didn’t surprise me that one of the five blue zones was in the Mediterranean. I knew where my next investments should be. Where I could truly make a difference in people’s lives,” says Royce. But why is a plant-based diet so good for us? According to the cardiologist Dr. Kim Williams, a plant-based diet can decrease plaque in the blood vessels, and lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. Eating fruits and vegetables can lower the

intake of saturated fat (which are fats replete with hydrogen and found primarily in meats), cholesterol (which is found only in animal-derived products), and heme iron (which creates reactive oxygen, a contributor to heart attacks). Vegetables and fruit contain soluble fiber (which removes harmful cholesterol in the digestive tract), and are rich in anti-oxidants, plant sterols, phytochemicals, and heart-healthy potassium. With the focus and drive that propelled Royce to the top one hundredth of one percent of real estate agents in the nation (the Wall Street Journal), Royce examined the healthy beverage and water industry, and soon recognized there was no drink with the efficacious ingredients of a plant-based diet, the very foundation of some of the healthiest people on Earth. Royce also realized that she hadn’t tasted one low calorie drink that was nutritious or even delicious! The five-calorie drinks were flavored by stevia, and the other alternatives had high concentrations of added sugars. Royce seized on the unfolding opportunity and favorable market conditions to fill this white space and give the market a 100% plant-based, all-natural, drink — abundant in goodness and deliciously low in calories. A plant-based diet is also better for the environment, Royce’s other passion. As reported in Scientific American, a 2006 report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) revealed that the meat in our diets promotes an alarming amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere — on average, the yearly effect of driving a car 1,800 miles!

FAST FORWARD: GOODNESS Consulting with a team of industry insiders, Royce founded BONTÁ Hydration, a water fortified with those vital antioxidants and protective phytonutrients naturally sourced near the Mediterranean. For the first pour, Royce worked with top food scientists and nutritionists, exploring the health benefits of various plants, including turmeric, ginger, blood orange, marigold, chamomile, pomegranate, lemon, and silver linden. The result is BONTÁ Hydration’s four healthy, delicious, allnatural, and organic beverages — FORTIFY, VITALIZE, REVIVE, and GLOW — with an ingredient mix consisting of the many nutrients that are often lacking in Western diets. The drinks’ effects are stunning. As I write, I am enjoying an ice-cold REVIVE, which includes turmeric; blood orange, pomegranate, and grapefruit juices; tomato powder; and hibiscus and olive powder extracts. It’s delicious and has anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and neural-protective properties. My husband now prefers VITALIZE after playing tennis instead of his ritual Diet Coke. He loves the way it tastes and is impressed with its nutrients. It’s only 35 calories and has more resveratrol than 37 five-ounce glasses of red wine, SocialLifeMagazine.com

greater lycopene properties than 32 tomatoes, and vitamin C equal to more than 17 cups of spinach. The organic cherry juice allows a natural sweetness to which no sugar or sorbitol can ever compare. For my hands and nails, I drink GLOW. Each bottle contains as much vitamin C as five lemons, beta carotene equivalent to four cups of broccoli, and the folic acid benefits of two avocados. The ginger juice, silver linden, and chamomile extracts also give GLOW that extra kick: perfect for your morning lemon water! FORTIFY is infused with ingredients that support your immune system, vitamin Bs, vitamin C, and vitamin E — the equivalent of 11 cups of spinach, two servings of salmon, six pomegranates, and 22 Swiss chards, to name a few. I thank Royce for helping me focus on food. With such a preponderance of fad regimens and low-calorie products loaded with chemical sugar substitutes, it is easy to lose sight of what a healthy, balanced diet is. I also appreciate the valuable lesson of our elders: engage. Rather than run on a treadmill, walk Coopers Beach with friends, garden with your grandchildren, volunteer as a dog walker or puppy and kitten helper for North Shore Animal League (animalleague.org), or bicycle on Sagg Main — just have fun and have a purpose. BONTÁ is currently sold locally at Goldberg’s (goldbergsbagels.org), Schmidt’s Market (schmidtsmkt.com), Red Horse Market (redhorsemarket.com), and The Seafood Shop (theseafoodshop.com).

CRYO-FACIALS MAKE OUR FACE LOOK LESS BLOATED — IMMEDIATELY! By Liana Werner-Gray

Dr. Dana Cohen (M.D.), Liana Werner-Gray, Dr. Daniel Fenster (Founder of Cool Zone Cryo) and Geney Kim (Managing Partner) at the Opening Party of Cool Zone Cryo.

A

nd it only takes 10 minutes for a facial – this has been such a time saver for me! Cryo-facials are ideal for those of us who have busy schedules yet want beautiful, collagen-rich, vibrant skin. And we can fly in anytime for a quick ten-minute session in Water Mill because Cool Zone Cryo takes walk-ins! No-surgery, needles, or recovery time is involved! Cryo-facials are a non-invasive and pain-free treatment. Your face is instantly cooled with a vaporized form of liquid nitrogen. This causes the blood vessels in the face to constrict and dilate, which flushes out toxins and impurities and boosts the supply of oxygen in the skin cells. Over time, skin becomes more elastic due to the increased collagen, resulting in smoother skin with a more youthful glow.

You can have a cryo-facial at any time. I do them before events and parties, so I feel refreshed and look vibrant. It makes a huge difference! I literally feel the tension melting away from my face. You lie comfortably on a massage table and Geney (or another lovely staff member) uses a wand that blows vaporized liquid nitrogen onto your skin. This is the cryo-facial. You can even do it with makeup on. No washing of the face is involved. It’s extremely convenient. Cool Zone Cryo in Water Mill is the go-to spot because it also offers whole-body cryotherapy. It’s great to do before Soul Cycle, which is in the same shopping complex, so you feel refreshed and energized. I’ll do up to five cryo-facials a week sometimes. Our skin absorbs a lot of pollution and is environmentally stressed, so this helps to keep it looking young. These days we are fortunate to have these simple yet effective tools to assist us in looking and feeling our best. Regular cryotherapy users are models and celebrities, including LeBron James, Hugh Jackman, and Dr. Oz. Tony Robbins said it’s his favorite tech and it’s much like the benefits of jumping into an ice bath. coolzonecryo.com 760 Montauk Highway, Unit 2C, Water Mill 631.377.5117 30 E 60th Street, Unit 302 212.737.9000

EVERYTHING A CRYO-FACIAL DOES: Increases collagen production Reduces tension Relaxes forehead lines Evens out skin tone Reduces puffiness Reduces dark under-eye circles Tightens skin Reduces pore size Reduces fine lines and wrinkles Decreases pigmentation and uneven skin tone Restores firmness and radiance Improves skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, blemishes, and acne Helps with sunburn, redness, hangovers, and headaches Helps rejuvenate fatigued/stressed skin

FITNESS Q & A WITH DR . DAVID GREUNER By David Delay

D

avid Greuner, MD, is a lifelong competitive athlete who now competes in triathlons for charity causes. He shares with us a range of information about exercise and diet, from dispelling myths to letting us in on the science behind diet and exercise advice. He is a founding member and the director of NYC Surgical Associates, a multi-specialty practice with seven locations in the tristate area, each with its own on-site surgical facility. Since its founding in 2008, NYC Surgical Associates has become one of the fastest growing practices in New York. It’s also one of the safest. NYC Surgical Associates brings together highly skilled physicians who work together as a team for their patients. A gifted and professionally renowned cardio-thoracic surgeon, Dr. Greuner is the inventor of No Knife EVLT, a procedure that solves vein problems without even the smallest of incisions. You can see Dr. Greuner perform this procedure on The Doctors show, which is available on YouTube. He has also pioneered the novel procedure known as The Slim Line Hernia Repair, a cutting-edge way to repair hernias — a topic he covers below. Dr. Greuner has appeared on The Doctor Oz Show, ABC, and CBS. Tell us about your background and what you do. I am asked this question often, as NYC Surgical Associates is unique, and I’m not aware of another practice like it in the country. I am a general and cardiovascular surgeon by training, and I am double board certified. When I was in training I loved the anatomy and physiology of my field, but was disappointed about the stage at which we were treating patients. We were treating end-stage disease in patients who had damaged their bodies for decades. I began to study techniques for treating people at earlier stages, with less invasive approaches, what is called “endovascular” surgery. As I progressed in this skill set, I began to teach others about new techniques, and how to prevent the need for surgery. I educated via seminars, articles such as this, and other media. I became a media correspondent for health concerns for a nationwide TV network and wrote for publications such as Muscle & Fitness magazine. I began to see younger patients, with other problems. I ventured into a world that was unknown at the time, the world of deep venous intervention, or the treatment of the large deep veins in the body that return blood from the abdomen, pelvis, and chest to the heart. My medical practice started to take a different shape, as people with these issues tended to be more athletic, largely because deep venous disease is often only manifest in very active people. As I treated this more athletic crowd, I began to see the types of problems that are more prevalent in this population, including hernias.

Dr. David Greuner

Hernias happen often in individuals who are constantly challenging their bodies. As I had significant experience in this arena as part of my surgical training, I began to treat my patients for this as well. I began to search for ways to do these operations with less scarring, and better results, and over time I developed some excellent techniques not practiced widely. Now NYC Surgical Associates specializes in the most high-risk cases that have been turned down by all other surgeons. Well, we appreciate the easy ones too! Currently, our practice is one of the busiest in the country for hernia surgery, from simple to extremely complex, as well as deep venous endovascular surgery as a result, and we have an active fellowship program that has trained several top-notch graduates. I love speaking about health, fitness, and preventative issues and how to keep in shape — not just for ideal form, but for function as well. Let’s start on the lighter side. What are some of the most common misconceptions about diet and weight loss? Well, there are so many of them out there, I don’t know where to start! Let me give a few of my favorites. If you work out more, you can ease up on your diet. False. This is one of the most common false statements I hear routinely. In general, diet and working out should be looked at as affecting two completely different aspects of your physique. In general, the way you look is 80 percent dependent on diet. Of course diet affects a lot of other things as well, including how you feel. Working out affects mostly how your body functions. If you want to increase strength, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, etc., the only way to do so is through workouts engineered to achieve that goal. However, if you exercise routinely and with maximum effort, and you do not have a very well-structured diet, you likely will not look how you want to look. The converse is also true. If you have a diet that is completely on point, and work out very little, you will likely still look superb, but may not function very well, and you may not have any endurance, strength, or muscle mass. You must do cardio to lose weight. False. Cardio is a catch-all term for aerobic exercise, but did you know that you can get your heart pumping in many other ways? Rapid fire circuit training, for example. Lifting lighter weights for more repetitions is the way to get ripped. False. The only way to get that ripped, lean look is by having a low percentage of body fat, which is achieved mostly by a low-calorie diet. That is the only way to show your hard-earned muscle in its true glory.

strength/mass, while women tend to focus on flexibility and endurance. Ideally, all should be addressed for a healthy body. If you look at workouts as a way to improve your functional status, and diet as the path to weight management, you will likely have far greater success in achieving your fitness goals. What are some ways you recommend to help stick to your workout routine? Personally, I try to adapt to the seasons. In summer, I spend as much time as I can outdoors, doing activities like running, cycling, swimming, and hiking. During the winter, I mix it up. When the weather confines me to an indoor environment, I start taking more group classes at places like Barry’s Bootcamp, Soul Cycle, and other group fitness classes. Working out with a friend or partner is often an excellent way to stick to a routine. On days when you might not feel like pushing forward, your partner can give you that extra nudge and vice versa. What are the critical hormones that affect your overall physique and health? There are four key players: testosterone, growth hormone (GH), insulin, and cortisol.

1

Contrary to popular belief, testosterone is actually important for females as well, but they need it in significantly lower levels than males. Testosterone functions to stimulate our libido, increase stamina, help maintain muscle mass, and also affect other things such as skin health. Lack of testosterone causes lack of libido and fatigue. The decrease in this hormone is largely responsible for the loss of muscle mass and increase in fat as we age, for both males and females. Appropriate testosterone levels are necessary for an overall toned physique. Weight-bearing exercises and a diet higher in protein can result in higher amounts of testosterone being released.

If I lift weights, I’ll get too bulky. False. Just like fat, muscle needs excess calories in order to enlarge. If you lift heavy weights, and eat excess calories and protein, yes, you will get bulkier. If you eat a low-caloric diet, massive muscle growth is impossible.

2

OK, so what is the ideal workout regimen? That depends on what you are trying to accomplish. In general, I group objectives into three separate categories. • Flexibility • Endurance • Strength/Muscle Mass All three goals are achieved using different techniques, and all are important. If you noted, I didn’t include weight loss as a category because, in general, weight loss has very little to do with your workout regimen, as I stated prior. Men tend to focus more on endurance and

3

SocialLifeMagazine.com

GH promotes lean muscle growth, but also causes fat loss. It improves the overall health of skin, hair, and connective tissue. Increasing growth hormone levels clearly helps promote a leaner physique and healthier appearance. You can help increase the levels of GH by more frequent, higher-intensity workouts, and taking a power nap. It is also released in longer intervals when insulin levels are lower, so low-sugar diets will help increase GH. Insulin is your body’s only completely anabolic hormone, meaning it is entirely pro-growth. It causes accumulation of muscle, fat, and promotes rebuilding of any damaged tissue in the body. It is released in response to a meal. Insulin is great, but in excess, it will cause a significant amount of weight gain. In general, a high-sugar diet will cause an over release of insulin.

Cortisol triggers the body to break down muscle to raise blood sugar as well as blood pressure levels, which in short-term stressful situations works towards our benefit. When stress is prolonged, however, and cortisol levels are elevated for longer periods of time, a situation that mimics diabetes is the result. Excessive cortisol exposure over the long-term can cause a huge variety of issues, ranging from premature aging of the skin to heart disease and atherosclerosis to a flabby, non-muscular physique. How can we help mitigate the effects of cortisol and stress? In short, anything that makes you calmer and more relaxed helps to lower your cortisol levels, which is clearly beneficial over the long-term. This can range from meditation to hard-core workouts. If you wanted to take things a step further, and actually stimulate certain hormones, such as GH, testosterone, and other hormones that promote a lean, toned physique, weight-bearing workouts such as circuit training or weight lifting are an excellent way to do so. How does sleep affect your physique and overall health? Believe it or not, getting enough sleep is beneficial on multiple levels. I’ve heard a lot about how instituting cheat meals into your diet can be beneficial to actually maintaining a leaner physique. It sounds confusing. Can you explain? Think of your body as a creature of habit. It wants to maintain the status quo, whatever that is, at any cost. It also is pre-programmed to always be in a storage mode to accumulate fuel for when it is needed. In short, we are programmed to be fat. When we diet, our body wants to preserve the status quo. It senses that our caloric intake is dropping, and tries to operate in a more efficient way in order to accommodate the new, more restrictive “fuel budget,” so to speak. This takes several days to happen. When you have a cheat meal, your body’s detection mechanism is thrown off, and it thinks that it can once again operate on a frivolous energy budget again, meaning less efficiently. This way, you are always able to trick your metabolism into temporarily speeding up. Of course, this only works if the majority of your time is spent in a caloric deficit. You can’t have cheat meals every other day and expect to lose weight. What are some injuries that you see in very active people, and how can they be treated? Deep vein problems and hernias are problems I see commonly in my practice, and I see them in two patient populations: those who have had a significant weight loss and competitive athletes.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

Let’s start with hernias. Hernias are essentially an over-widening of a normally existing space between muscle layers. This widening creates a gap large enough to allow normally contained contents to slide through, something that wouldn’t normally be possible in a person without a hernia. They can also be due to tears in muscular structures that are inherently weak. They often happen in patients who perform repetitive weight-bearing activity, because increased pressure within the abdomen, chest, and pelvis, strains these areas. When pressure overwhelms the structural integrity of your body, a hernia results. Hernias can be fixed in many ways. Most commonly, a prosthetic device called a “mesh” is used to close the gap. I am not a fan of these meshes, as up to 40 percent of these patients have issues like chronic pain related to the mesh. In fact, a large part of our practice is removing previously placed meshes. NYC Surgical Associates uses mesh-free repairs, utilizing natural tissues to close the gaps, which is more technically challenging, but yields far better results, in my opinion. The second issue we see with regularity is what is called deep vein disease. Deep veins are the drains of your body, and work to return blood to your heart from your arms and legs. I like to use the analogy of a shower with a poorly functioning drain. We can all relate to that. When you exercise lightly (taking a short shower), the drain works fine. It’s when you perform strenuous activity, causing your heart to pump a large amount of blood to your legs (taking a long shower), that the drain starts to become a problem. Blood becomes trapped in your legs, because the veins that are not functioning well cannot return blood as fast as it is being pumped in (the shower floods). The legs then become numb, painful, crampy, and swollen. This can range from mildly uncomfortable to completely debilitating. I know, because I myself had a severe case. This can now be fixed with excellent durability, through nothing more than an IV catheter, no incision, and local anesthesia. Isn’t modern medicine awesome? Is it ever too late to become fitness-centric? It’s never too late to make a change, especially when it comes to your health and fitness. Clearly, as you age, criteria, activity tolerance, and goals may change somewhat, but you are the master of your own domain when it comes to your health. A little discipline and dedication can help you transform yourself at any age.

JEAN SHAFIROFF A CURATOR OF CHARITABLE CAUSES Altruism and elegance go hand-in-hand for this New York philanthropist. By Christine Stoddard

Jean Shafiroff ’s world may seem filled with glamorous charity balls, but the reality of her day-to-day life is filled with hard work. The author and humanitarian brings a strong consideration for people and animals to all that she does for charities in the Hamptons and beyond. Shafiroff, who was most recently honored by the Southampton Animal Shelter, wholeheartedly dedicates herself to elevating several causes. She does this by chairing or otherwise organizing memorable fundraisers with humility and grace. She also gives generously of her own time and resources. Her goal? To inspire potential donors’ enthusiasm for the organizations whose causes she believes in. “Local organizations especially rely on summer fundraisers to survive,” says Shafiroff. “Without the capability to fundraise, a lot of these groups would have a very difficult time.” The hard-working natural altruist does her part by leading fundraising efforts, conference calls, making site visits, and coordinating other tasks that ensure that these high-profile events are successes for charities in the Hamptons, New York City, and elsewhere. Her fundraisers for the New York City Mission Society, New York Women’s Foundation, the Southampton Hospital, the Southampton Animal Shelter, and other nonprofits will continue for as long as it takes. “I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re here for a reason. We’re not meant to just consume,” says Shafiroff. “We have to do what we can to improve the lives of future generations. We have to be socially aware and we must enact change.” Her dedication is unfailing. SocialLifeMagazine.com

It’s no wonder Shafiroff ’s philanthropic efforts have been mentioned by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Gotham Magazine, New York Social Diary, Avenue, Hamptons Magazine, and The Huffington Post, among other outlets. Multiple organizations have also formally honored Shafiroff ’s philanthropic work. The American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, the NYC Mission Society, the Jewish Board, Youth Counseling League, Surgeons of Hope, The Ellen Hermanson Foundation, Pet Philanthropy Circle and Animal Zone International are just some of them. These honors are not given, but rightfully earned. In order to do the remarkable fundraising work she does, Shafiroff serves on a plethora of boards. These include the boards of the New York City Mission Society, French Heritage Society, the Couture Council, the New York Women’s Foundation, the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services, the Southampton Bath & Tennis Club’s Charitable Foundation, and Global Strays. She also is an honorary board member for the Southhampton Animal Shelter and an ambassador of the American Humane Society. Even so, it is not enough to simply serve on these boards. Shafiroff does so adroitly; hence her many accolades. Of course, she is somewhat shy to admit her accomplishments. “The organizations and I do these fundraisers together as a team,” she says. The multi-potentiator’s leadership and fundraising capabilities developed gradually thanks to her modest background and varied life experiences. Shafiroff raised a family with her

husband Martin Shafiroff. But before that, she worked hard in school. Growing up middle-class in Hicksville, she learned the value of generosity and commitment in Catholic school and continued her education from there. After she obtained her B.S. in physical therapy from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, she worked in the field for a bit before deciding to switch fields. So she applied to and was accepted by the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University. From there, she worked on Wall Street for a short time after earning her M.B.A. During this time, she became a mother to two daughters, Jacqueline and Elizabeth, whom she raised to be caring and interested in community matters. With motherhood came Shafiroff ’s desire to give back to society. Volunteer philanthropy seemed like the perfect fit.

PRIORITIZING HER CAUSES Sharifoff would bring attention and aid to every charity around the globe if she could. She focuses on the causes most important to her: animal welfare, women’s rights and underserved populations. It was with time that Shafiroff began to see how closely interconnected humans and animals are as living beings. “Sixty-five percent of all American households have a pet,” she says. “In this country, our pets are considered companion animals, but in many other countries, this not necessarily the case.” Pet owner education is at the center of Shafiroff ’s fundraising efforts for adoption organizations. “We need to make low-cost or free spay and neuter programs available to people in underserved communities,” she says. She vehemently opposes at-home breeding and puppy mills. “People end up with ten dogs and no one to buy them, so they end up in shelters. Overpopulation is the root of the problem. With education, we’d be much further ahead.” With this in mind, Shafiroff has been mentoring her daughter Elizabeth and her friend Lindsay Spielfogel as they navigate the first stages of their nonprofit, Global Strays. This new 501(c)3 organization makes grants to fund rescue groups in developing nations, such as Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. Their goal is to assist with medical funding, spay and neuter programs, education on the proper care of animals, and other efforts. The organization only distributes grants to organizations it has personally visited, which means that Shafiroff is happy to fund trips to developing nations. “Going and actually seeing the work that a charity does can really reinforce your passion,” says Shafiroff, who now sits on the organization’s board. Global Strays held its first fundraiser on June 21 in Manhattan and they expect to have many more in the future.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

WHAT LOOKS EFFORTLESS TAKES EFFORT Not only is Shafiroff emotionally invested in several causes, she is highly practical about fundraising. Each party is a chance to lift a cause to the attention of potential donors. “The primary purpose of a charity event is to bring interest and funding to the charity,” she says. “Then bring visibility and then of course people, although, yes, the event needs to be fun and exciting.” Shafiroff believes that when people get dressed up for an event, they often raise the level of an occasion. She developed her interest in fashion through her involvement as a board member for the museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Shafiroff hosts breathtaking events, but achieving them is hard work. The planning phases of a gala demand an acute business sense, targeted strategy, and a conscientious effort to get every detail exactly right. To plan for the special occasion, she schedules planning meetings — typically conference calls — to go over and polish the logistics of an event well in advance. Contacts will go over an outline point by point, whether that means debating the pros and cons of certain locations or brainstorming potential donors and corporate sponsorships. In addition to smoothing out these and other details, she works to generate enthusiasm about the cause by keeping everyone informed. “A charity event has to be run like a business,” she says. This means Shafiroff keeps a close eye on finances throughout the planning process. Expenses of any charity event should never surpass one-third of the funds collected for an event and “should really be much less,” stresses Shafiroff. While planning and arranging various fundraising events, she creates introductions for the charities being benefitted. Introductions connect charities with key figures, like potential board members and donors. Her expertise in the world of philanthropy led her to write her first book, Successful Philanthropy: How to Make A Life By What You Give. The intro for the title was written by Georgina Bloomberg, and the book has been a bible of sorts for fellow altruists. Of course, she credits her success to a higher power. “As a woman, I feel blessed to be able to do the work I do. It is only with the help of God that I can be useful.” Sometime soon, she plans on writing a second book while continuing her television and radio appearances to discuss philanthropy, fashion, and animal rights. “I find my work so rewarding,” says Shafiroff. “We are obliged to have concern for future generations and all those in need. If we don’t make a big effort in our lifetime to give back, then we’ve really wasted a lifetime.”

THE TAO OF ELIZABETH FINKLE SANS IS IN THE SOUL OF EQUINOX SURFBOARDS By Christopher D.M. London, Esq.

Truth is a pathless land. Man cannot come to it through any organization, through any creed, through any dogma, priest or ritual, not through any philosophical knowledge or psychological technique. He has to find it through the mirror of relationship, through the understanding of the contents of his own mind, through observation and not through intellectual analysis or introspective dissection. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti

H

ow can we best tap into our own personal energy or power source? Love is compassion and intelligence, say the teachings of Krishnamurti. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale has instructed us on the “power of positive thinking.” Dale Carnegie’s teachings can still remind us “how to win friends and influence people.” Tony Robbins leads us to achieve unlimited power by “awakening the giant within.” The spiritual author Eckhart Tolle enlightens us by pointing out “the power of now and a new Earth: awakening to your life’s purpose.” All of these motivational teachings begin with love and understanding as necessary components. But here is the thing. We can read, comprehend, and digest all the wisdom in the world from self-help and motivational gurus and not ever bear witness to those among us who, in the face of great challenge, illustrate how to transform their lives. And if we don’t, maybe we never quite get it. As a practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism, I strive to bear witness to love, to receive it, to give it and witness examples born from great love of self, of friends, family, and community, and of purpose. Elizabeth Finkle Sans, a petite New Yorker, wife, mother, entrepreneur, cancer survivor, and middle-aged surfer is that example for me. Elizabeth has truly helped me “get it,” and maybe I haven’t given up yet on my own dreams because of her. You see, I have had the good fortune to know Elizabeth through some trying times in her life. I have witnessed her not only meet every challenge, but also evolve into a person who actually lives a better life. Her fearsome determination and spirit can match that of world-class athletes. A product of the Upper East Side and

Palm Beach, she now calls Westhampton and Nicaragua home. She is a real life hero and inspiration to me for a multitude of reasons that this article is not long enough for me to fully explain. Absent her spirit and her belief in me, I am not so sure that I would still be here today to write this article. Some friendships help you evolve, transform, and maybe even remind you of the inherent value and power of your own life. Some of us can be too hasty to let go of our purpose and willingness to forge on and survive when we could reclaim our destiny. Social Life

SOCIETY

Elizabeth Finkle Sans with Benefit Committee Members and Mayor Mike Bloomberg at the Fete de Swifty to Benefit the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City

I met Liz at the height of the modern philanthropic social era on the Upper East Side, at a private and intimate society cocktail party/fundraiser. It was post-9/11 and pre-financial crisis NYC. Philanthropist Mike Bloomberg was Mayor and most social events of import seemed to be taking place in some intimate, upscale locale on the Upper East Side, and it almost always had a charitable purpose. In many respects it was a beautiful thing and was a source of motivation for my coming to write about the character of society and the characters in it that you have read about in this magazine. While I did not know it at the time, Liz had grown up in and was quite accustomed to the prevailing social order and undercurrents on the Upper East Side. Liz was intuitively and factually aware of who and what were important. What was different about Liz is that she wasn’t merely polite and well mannered. She was rather straightforward and objectively helpful and kind. I did not know right away that she was also writing for a leading society publication in her spare time. She helpfully connected many of the right people with other movers and shakers to support the networking and fundraising efforts of the charities she covered and that she and her family had supported for years. Liz was inclusive and more than just randomly helpful. I never could figure out why she, as a connector to almost everyone of importance, decided to provide guidance to this writer-photographer who grew up in Queens and Brooklyn. After all, my knowledge of this world was limited to what I had learned working at a Wall Street law firm and what I read about in Bright Lights Big City or The Secrets of My Success. In many respects, I felt like a poor man’s Jay McInerney, or a taller, less secure, and larger Michael J. Fox. Liz was not, however “educating Rita,” but rather merely opening doors for me. She made sure I was included in certain things and was more accommodating and helpful than most when she encountered me. This often led to my having better photos and SocialLifeMagazine.com

perspective for my coverage for Social Life and other outlets. Liz did not want anything from me and, to this day, she never asks me for anything. She just became my friend and has exhibited great love and confidence in me, when sometimes I doubted myself and my purpose. And then she became someone I could not ever imagine not having known or being friends with. It was really just like that. Liz has faced some serious personal and health challenges in her life, and I came to see that no challenge was too great for her. Given all that transpired and having come to know her partner and her children, and feeling like a family member, I was as concerned as anyone about whether Liz would rebound. But Liz started surfing again after having a radical double mastectomy in 2013, and below she talks about her newest venture, Equinox Surfboards. My surfing took a big turn when I went on a Surf With Amigas retreat with my daughters, in Northern Nicaragua, at El Coco Loco Resort. I got my surf back, and became friends with the resort’s owners. I went back the next month and got yoga certified, fell in love with the country, and bought a home there! I began repping and riding Equinox surfboards, (I rode them during the retreat at the resort) and two years later, we have partnered with Steve Swindle, the new owner of Equinox, to bring these boards to the East Coast and build the brand. Steve is a 30-year firefighter in Southern California, who surfs as often as he can and bought Equinox Surfboards from Jay Sheehan, the founder. The boards are hand-shaped in California, and have a unique shape that works for all skill levels. Whether you are a nose rider, down the line, or ripping on a shore break, Equinox Surfboards has a board for you. If not, we can custom shape one! And,

because we have no brick and mortar, we offer better prices than most performance boards. Look for the green mini around the Quogue/Westhampton Beach area this summer, and of course, we are looking for reps who can venture East.” Equinox Surfboards are the preferred boards of surf resorts and surf camps in Nicaragua! Visit our website (equinoxsurfboards.com) and check out our unique boards, or tell us what you would like, and we will hand shape it for you, and bring it to your door! Liz did not just meet, deal with, and overcome many of her own challenges, she seemed to surf in and out of danger. In the midst of meeting big waves, she became a model, a source of strength, and guidance to me during some of my own struggles. And while I do not believe that Liz ever read the teachings of Edgar Cayce, Liz has been an example of quiet strength and wisdom that reflects an understanding and embrace of Cayce’s teachings. Among them, he wrote: …how happy those should be that have been called to a purposefulness in relieving suffering . . . in giving hope to those who find life’s pathway in the material world beset with shadows and doubts. . . . More individuals become so anxious about their own troubles,

and yet helping others is the best way to rid yourself of your own troubles. At 53 Liz has lived a fuller life than most. In addition to being a cancer survivor, she is nine-years AA sober, and a partner in the Equinox Surfboards company. She lives in Westhampton Beach and Nicaragua with her husband, Stephen Sans of Hamptons Tax Advisory Services, and their amazing children. There seems no way to sufficiently thank Liz for being a beacon of light and humanity during some tough times for me, when things were not always so easy for her either. Now when I see her surfing and combing the beach at The Swordfish Club in Westhampton, looking for her wave with a big smile on her face, I am reminded that no challenges are too great . . . except perhaps my ever becoming a surfer. Make no mistake, the soul of Liz Finkle Sans is undoubtedly in every handcrafted board from Equinox Surfboards and that ought to be enough for any professional or amateur surfer. The Tao of Liz reminds us to be steadfast but be patient, have the right Equinox surfboard, and wait for your wave. Then just hang loose.

MICHAEL IRVING ELECTED SOUTHAMPTON VILLAGE MAYOR IN JUNE By Blaire Bass

Ellen Irving, Mayor Michael Irving

I

n June this year, a new mayor was elected to represent Southampton Village for the first time in 12 years. Michael Irving, 63, will serve a two-year term as the new mayor, which expires on June 30, 2019. Social Life sat down with Mayor Irving to learn more about his plans to support the local community. Can you tell us about the issues you plan to tackle first? I am a big believer in listening to the people. Listening is critical to understanding the challenges the community of Southampton Village is faced with. In the same vein, it’s so important to share with the residents the solutions that are being developed and get feedback from them to help shape movement forward. While campaigning I developed four areas of focus based on comments from residents of the community. I believe that if we apply these concepts to government and issues, we will bring about change that will help preserve Southampton for generations to come. They include: • Review and enhance existing village services in an effort to make better use of our resources. • Create and support policies that protect year-round residents to help make Southampton Village a place for families to thrive over generations to come. • Update our commitment to preservation and sustainable development policies, including enforcement.

What do you love most about Southampton? I have a deep respect and love for Southampton Village, its bays, ponds, ocean, beaches and, most of all, its people. My mother was born in Quogue. My father worked for a large international business, so we were frequently traveling to a foreign country (or another state), but would return to Southampton the first chance we had. Southampton was home. What made you decide to run for office? Making the decision to run for office was difficult. My wife and I both have busy work schedules and four grandchildren. At first, we both agreed that it would be best for me not to run. As we got closer to campaign time, I kept thinking about some great personalities in Southampton that over the years have been such a large part of my life. And, my grandchildren… I felt I had an obligation to make sure the opportunities I got as a resident of Southampton were not going to be lost to them and future generations. What is something most people don’t know about you? I am a very private person at heart. The fan fare, publicity, photos, and engagements which are a part of being Mayor of Southampton, I struggle with a bit. My interest is in the people and environment which both make Southampton such a special place. My goal is to upgrade the village government’s commitment to preservation so we can retain the character of Southampton for people to enjoy for many years ahead. Working together we can achieve more. THE UPCOMING 34TH ANNUAL ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION’S RITA HAYWORTH GALA By Lizabeth Zindel

Photography by BFA

T

he 34th annual Rita Hayworth Gala, chaired by Karyn Kornfeld, Robin Meltzer, and Daryl Simon, will be held on Tuesday, October 24, at Cipriani 42nd Street. Willie Geist, the co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, will emcee the elegant black tie affair. Nina Garcia, the creative director of Marie Claire, will receive this year’s Champion Award for her unwavering support of the Alzheimer’s Association. Since the inaugural Rita Hayworth Gala over three decades ago, the New York City, Chicago, and Palm Beach events have raised more than $72 million to support the Alzheimer’s Association initiative to eliminate the disease and provide support and care to those afflicted and their loved ones. Princess Yasmin Aga Khan began this event in honor of her mother, the actress Rita Hayworth, who lost her life to Alzheimer’s. Under Princess Yasmin Aga Khan’s leadership, last year’s event raised nearly $2 million. These funds, combined with other donations, have helped the Alzheimer’s Association to work toward its mission. To celebrate the upcoming gala, the co-chairs, along with Anne and Jay McInerney and Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, hosted a beautiful summer cocktail party on July 28, in the Hamptons. The gorgeous event was held at Ashgrove Farm in Water Mill and featured an exciting silent auction. Raising money for Alzheimer’s is a cause close to many people’s hearts. Karyn Kornfeld’s grandmother passed away from Alzheimer’s. This heartbreaking loss inspired Kornfeld to work tirelessly with the organization. She devotes much of her time to philanthropy, through her work with the Alzheimer’s Association Rita Hayworth Gala and other charitable endeavors. Kornfeld has a long history with the association, as the first junior committee chair and as an active member of the Rita Hayworth Gala steering committee for many years, alongside her mother Louise Kornfeld, who chaired in 2007. The Kornfeld family was honored at the 2014 Rita Hayworth Gala with the Family Philanthropy Award for their dedication, compassion, and financial support in the quest to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. War for the Planet of the Apes & Dunkirk One Direction singer Harry Styles proves he can act in Dunkirk, the thrilling WW2 blockbuster. He confesses, “You’re never going to get used to walking into a room and have people screaming at you.” Co-star Tom Hardy admits, “Fame and stuff like that is all very cool, but at the end of the day, we’re all human beings.” War for the Planet of the Apes stars Andy Serkis as the ape Caesar in this dark vision of a human vs. ape civilization. This epic action-movie is a thought-provoking morality tale. Serkis said, “Life’s short. Get out there. You can do it. Everyone can do it.” His co-star Judy Greer waxed philosophical, saying, “I really believe waiting tables, and service industry jobs in general, make you a better person.”

WE TOLD YOU SO BABCOOK AND BARON REVEAL 2017 WINS By Jacob Puck

W

hen we last spoke to the Brown Harris Stevens dynamic duo Mark Baron and Jane Babcook, they revealed that this has been a blockbuster summer for the market . . . and that anything goes. From new construction to smaller turnkey properties, everything is blazing. “There is definitely a trend for smaller properties. For example, we have just closed on several properties in the villages of Sag Harbor and Bridgehampton, where the buyers have downsized from large estates to the simplicity of the village lifestyle,” says Babcook. Meanwhile, Baron pointed out that “quality of construction is key, plus comparable sales and the location has to be right.” For Baron and Babcook, the location always has to be right, and they have the exclusive sales to show for it. “We’re not ones to toot our horn, but it has been an exceptional summer for those looking for their dream home.” When asked, the pair pointed to their top four.

51 BRANDYWINE, SAG HARBOR Built in 2016 and close to the world-famous Sag Harbor historic district, restaurants, shops, village beach, and marinas, this thoughtfully designed traditional features all the amenities and design buyers are after in today’s high-end homes. “This truly is a dream home,” says Baron, adding that one of the most stunning features of the manse is the entry. “The first floor enters to a foyer that leads to a light-filled living room with fireplace; dining room; den; first floor ensuite guest bedroom; and large gourmet eat-in kitchen with state-of-the-art stainless appliances, marble countertops, and pantry,” says Baron. “Frankly, this lends to first-floor living, but with a beautiful large master bedroom with gas fireplace, exquisite custom walk-in closet, and luxurious master bathroom with tub and walk-in shower, as well as three ensuite guest bedrooms, why sequester yourself ?” Babcook notes that the grounds truly complete the home: “The outdoors has a bluestone patio for dining, a gunite heated pool and spa surrounded by beautifully landscaped and irrigated grounds. Those who know me understand that I believe a home is lacking if it sacrifices nature!” Under contract in six weeks and traded within 7% of the listing price, the sale more than confirmed the pair’s analysis. HOME 12 LUDLOW GREEN, BRIDGEHAMPTON Located in the heart of Bridgehampton village, on a private cul de sac within the Ludlow Green association, this tastefully renovated turnkey traditional features 3,000 square feet of living space, including four bedrooms plus three full and one half bath. “It’s a perfect example of the value that people are placing in a nice turnkey,” says Babcook. “Features such as the double-height foyer, dining room with fireplace, and lots of extra space continue to be appealing.” Baron says the views impress. “The spacious second floor master suite overlooks the reserve and professionally landscaped grounds,” he says. “When you kick in a huge saltwater pool, bluestone patio, and lush garden, you’ve got a winner.” Under contract within five weeks and traded within 4% of the listing price.

240 BLANK LANE, WATER MILL Baron explains that Black Lane is the textbook example of a perfectly sited new construction. “Discriminating buyers want the best designers and builders, so having Brigit Klein Interiors at the helm truly brought cachet to this gem,” he says. “With a total of nine bedrooms and nine and a half baths, this property includes a magnificent master suite with oversized bathroom, large walk-in closet, and private terrace overlooking the estate-like grounds. It’s a property that was hard to beat.” Babcook says that one of the best features of a new construction is a spotless gourmet kitchen. “This one featured top-of-line stainless appliances, beautiful quartz countertops and breakfast bar, and a nice line of sight to the family room, and a stylish formal dining room,” she says. “Of course, the bonus is always the exterior and, in this case, an oversized heated gunite pool, spa, and pool house came complete with farm views and country vistas.” Listed for under $4.5 million, Black Lane came with inherent value to the purchaser and traded within 5%.

18 HOWARD STREET, SAG HARBOR Old and new meshes beautifully in this village dream home. Located on one of most coveted downtown streets in historic Sag Harbor, this brand new five-bedroom, with five and a half baths, blends Federal style elegance with today’s modern appointments. “Again, kitchens are at the top of everyone’s list right now, and the custom Bakes & Kropp kitchen cabinets, Wolf oven, Sub-Zero refrigerator, and marble countertops made this property pop,” says Baron. “But, that was rivaled by the intimate setting, with views of the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum, which provides a tranquil environment for the new owners.” Babcook was impressed by the stunning master bedroom featuring vaulted v-board walls and ceiling, aged exposed beams, and an outdoor terrace overlooking the backyard. Proximity to world-class restaurants, shops, and marinas made this charmer a big hit. As it neared completion, multiple bids traded within 4% of the listing price. Mark J. FRANK & DAWN BODENCHAK SOTHEBY'S INTERNATIONAL REALTY NEW CONSTRUCTION GURUS BRING HAUTE TO THE HAMPTONS By Blaire Bass

F

rank Bodenchak and his wife, Dawn Bodenchak, have translated their knowledge of development and real estate into phenomenal brokerage results. The numbers speak for themselves. Over the past 15 years, they have been involved in over $350 million of transactions, many setting a record price for the street. “Our true passion, though, is in adding value in architecture and design. We love finding the right piece of land for a developer, or helping a buyer design, build, or find the most amazing house. It’s a fantastic feeling. We enjoy finding and creating value.” Frank says. On the investment side, Frank and Dawn have focused on the purchase of estate-sized properties and the development of complex, design-oriented estate homes. “We put our heart and soul into every design detail, from meticulously planned layouts to finish choices, cutting-edge technologies, and landscape details.” Four of these have been selected to become a Hampton Designer Showhouse. “It’s a little bit like being on a reality TV show,” Frank says. “You’ve got 30 designers, each taking over a room or space. And it’s frenetic because they’re coming into a finished project in June, and transforming their space in less than a month, so that we can open to the public in July. It’s a lot of fun. It’s exciting for sure. But it’s also a challenge managing 30 personalities — all working at the same time — with dozens of subcontractors on top of each other.” Sag Harbor, Hampton Designer Showhouse

RANCHO LA PUERTA MEXICO’S WORLD CLASS SPA By Joe Alexander

Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theater, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City. His stories have been featured in numerous national magazines, including Haute Living. Joe lives in Manhattan and Southampton with his Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Cornelia and Webster.

THE FULL SPA EXPERIENCE While Rancho la Puerta resort may have been North America’s first fitness spa, founded in 1940 by Deborah Szekely and her late husband, Edmond, it continues to adapt to modern tastes, and remains one of the world’s top spa destinations after 77 years. Guests have included Kate Winslet, Robert Redford, Oprah Winfrey, Governor Jerry Brown, Erica Jong, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, and Arianna Huffington. Set amid 3,000 pristine acres in Tecate, Mexico, only an hour from San Diego, Rancho la Puerta’s spa facilities are world class, and treatments are constantly being added and reimagined as science evolves. “The full spa experience — facials, massages, water therapy, manicures and pedicures — was not always a part of Rancho la Puerta’s program,” says co-founder Deborah Szekely, who is now 95. “For example, we never offered massage at the ranch until I started [California spa] the Golden Door 18 years after the first guests arrived at Rancho la Puerta.”

HERBAL WRAPS & SKIN CARE The place began as a rustic summer camp; however, in the early days, they did create an herbal wrap, out of necessity, Deborah explains. “Without it many of the guests, because they never exercised at home, were so stiff they Social Life

literally crawled out of their beds after their first day of hiking and exercise at the ranch. Herbal wraps were the answer. The heat relaxed the muscles.” Later, the Szekelys hired experts to begin training programs in massage and skin care at Rancho la Puerta, and they were an immediate hit. “Guests had worked hard all day, and they looked forward to having the soothing attention of facials and massages.”

HEALTH CENTERS Today, the spa has health centers for both women and men, and Deborah says they are as important a part of each guest’s stay as the hikes, exercise classes, cooking school, and other programs. “We emphasize balance,” she says. “Long ago, I said it never has been enough that my spas simply make you better looking. I really believe people can be happier and more energetic, and altogether more fulfilled human beings.” The number of spa treatments offered has quadrupled over the past decade, and there is an experienced staff of 75, most of them long-term employees.

FOUR-TIER HEALING PROCESS Cleansing involves ridding the body of toxins, and treatments include a detox massage and the original herbal wrap, the ranch’s signature treatment. They use fresh plants and herbs like eucalyptus, rosemary, or sage that are grown in their organic garden, or that grow wild in the nearby mountains. The 30-minute wrap is sometimes combined with a 20-minute massage, which Tere Ochoa, the spa director, says opens up your pores and allows moisturizers to really seep into your skin. Doesn’t that sound heavenly? They also employ a method of cupping with suction cups made of plastic instead of glass. Plastic cups don’t leave marks on your skin like the purple blotches on the body of gold medalist Michael Phelps at the Rio Olympics last summer. “They suck up the impurities in your body,” Ochoa says. “If you smoke, you can see the oil they use for the cups turning dark. It really works.” Restoring might include a rosemary loofah salt glow, which starts with a loofah glove that helps remove dead skin cells, followed by a scrub, then a shower, and ending with a massage. “It opens up all your pores and gets rid of all the dead cells on your body,” says Ochoa. “That really renews your skin, and at the end your whole skin is like a baby’s bottom.” Relaxing involves treatments like a head-to-toe candle oil massage, a combination of body treatments using warm oils secreted from melted candle wax poured onto your skin. Energizing entails healing therapies that activate and SocialLifeMagazine.com

strengthen, like reflexology on your hands and feet. Energy balance is a fundamental holistic philosophy, and treatments include a somatic experience to relieves stress, plus craniosacral therapy, acupuncture, and reiki, which remove energy blocks and allow healing energy to flow and harmonize the whole body.

LOOK AND FEEL BETTER Ochoa says you can actually see the results after a week at the spa. They take photos, so you can see your skin color when you arrive on Saturday. “At the end of the week you can really see the different color of skin, just from the different eating habits they have throughout the stay, a really healthy skin, really glowing,” she says. “That’s amazing, but they change a lot.”

MEN AND SPA TREATMENTS One recent phenomenon that Ochoa has noticed during her 17 years directing the spa is in the change in clientele. Today 16% of weekly spa visitors are male. “Men don’t think of spas as fat-farms anymore,” Ochoa says. Most weeks there are up to 30 men among the guests, and many more during couples’ weeks. She says many male clients are into exercise, and the most popular treatment among them is the sports recovery massage. They usually try some other spa treatments and get hooked. “Sometimes their wives need to convince them to try different treatments, not just the full body massage,” Ochoa says. “Then we can’t get rid of them,” she jokes. The mountain sage hot stone massage and the men’s refresher facial are both favorites. “Usually men are not into facials, but once they try it, they like it.”

SPA CONCIERGES Rancho la Puerta’s spa offers 55 treatments in all, and choosing among so many options may seem overwhelming, but stay calm. Concierges and other expert employees help you figure out what will work for you. “We have a spa concierge,” says Ochoa. “We have what we call the fitness concierge at the dining room on Saturday, your arrival day. We have a docent on the premises who can also help you, and we have all of our fitness staff. You can always do consultations and ask them questions.” And don’t forget, pampering treatments include things like moisturizing scalp treatments for the hair, and manicures and pedicures, which are popular with men, too. Guests may want to exercise, or simply relax and be pampered.

A TYPICAL DAY’S REGIMEN What you do each day at the ranch is entirely up to you, and depends on your interests, but many guests enjoy a morning hike just before breakfast, then perhaps take a meditation class or visit the gym. And you can decide when to incorporate spa treatments

into your day. For instance, Ochoa says people oftentimes take a few classes in the morning, go for a spa treatment, and relax for the rest of the afternoon.

NEW TREATMENTS New treatments include runner’s reflexology; Xocolatl, a gentle body mask made from cacao and sugar, followed by an exfoliation scrub of yogurt, chocolate, and honey; and a jet-lag treatment, employing reflexology to relieve hazards of travel like swollen feet and clogged pores from the stale airplane air.

MATERNITY MASSAGES The ranch offers maternity massages, but Ochoa says pregnant women can also enjoy regular treatments using special pillows as they lie on one side. A couple of treatments are not recommended during pregnancy, and the ranch advises pregnant guests to consult with their physicians prior to coming.

IF YOU CAN’T DISCONNECT Brand new are three villas cielo, or heavenly villas, secluded private residences with a den that can be converted into a private gym or an office, in which you can receive private spa treatments as well. These new villas bow to the modern world. “They were designed because not everyone can take a week off or disconnect completely from their daily life,” says Ochoa. A corporate CEO cannot always just take time off. This way, you get the ranch experience, but still have your own space to work as many hours as you want. A special reiki massage is offered only to guests in those villas.

RANCHO LA PUERTA’S ORGANIC GARDENS RANCH DINING

“I don’t really know what spa cuisine is,” says Rancho la Puerta’s executive chef, Denise Roa. “I know the philosophy of the ranch: we incorporate food into the whole experience. Food is just one of the foundations of being able to tie everything together to have balance,” she says. The Mexico City-born, Miami-bred chef has taught cooking and has owned her own restaurant, but she still has learned from Deborah Szekely, who embraced organic gardening and natural foods from the very beginning in 1940.

SEASONAL & ORGANIC “What I’ve learned about the ranch is that it’s about eating something that is at its best, because it tastes better, and you don’t have to mask it with flavors,” she says, meaning they eschew butter, salt, and cream. “So if you’re eating seasonal, you always have the best quality and the right nutrients that you need for that time of year, but also, when you eat well and you exercise and you breathe, and then you get back and you read, listen to music, and do things that you love, it’ll help you have an emotional balance.” The food she and her staff prepare for guests is semi-vegetarian, a fusion of seasonal and Mexican flavors. Anywhere from 65 percent to 85 percent of what is served at each meal is grown on the premises at the resort’s six-acre organic farm, Rancho Tres Estrellas. “Since we’re in the summer right now, today I got 50 pounds of fresh strawberries,” Roa says. The rest is sourced from local farmers who follow sustainable practices, and seafood is purchased fresh daily from local fishermen at the nearby port of Ensenada. SocialLifeMagazine.com

La Cocina que Canta (Bottom) Octopus dish

BEST JOB IN THE WORLD Even with all her experience in the culinary world, Roa says that ranch founder Deborah Szekely has given her the best opportunity of her life. “There’s something that she saw in me; it was just a trust. I would never want to let her down.” The two women meet weekly, and talk about food and its role in wellness. “I have the best job in the world,” says Roa.

THE KITCHEN THAT SINGS Cooking classes are offered at La Cocina que Canta — the kitchen that sings — which is set in the organic garden. Chef Roa teaches classes, as do world-renowned visiting chefs who regularly come to offer lessons. The “singing kitchen” is a reference to the sensory experience, the aromas, colors, and sounds, and the energy of a lively group of people cooking together. It all comes together in an explosion of taste when you dine on the meal you have just created. The Singing Kitchen thesingingkitchen.com

DEBORAH SZEKELY MOTHER OF THE MODERN SPA MOVEMENT By Joe Alexander

D

eborah Szekely, the founder of famed fitness spa Rancho la Puerta, calls herself a health nut. “To me that’s a favorable term,” says the 95-year-old. The most important key to leading a healthy life, Szekely believes, is state of mind. “Thinking out of the box, seeing, being aware, enjoying little things. It’s a presence, being centered,” she explains. It’s more than just positivity, says Szekely, who is considered the mother of the modern spa movement. People should enjoy what they do. “Whatever they work at should be a joy or pleasure, not work,” she says, adding that the quality of the food and the quality of the movement are also important. “Delight in the little things in nature and in life. I think it’s hard to be truly healthy without that. I mean, cows can be truly healthy; they just eat grass. So I think the psychological aspects are very important. And that’s why the ranch is so successful, because there’s a spirit there and the spirit is so important.”

FROM RUSTIC SUMMER CAMP TO LUXURY SPA RESORT These are the basic tenets with which she started Rancho la Puerta in 1940, and they remain so at the ranch today, although the resort has evolved from a rustic, bring-your-owntent, $17.50-per-week summer camp to a full-fledged luxury spa resort with every conceivable, state-of-the-art amenity.

to hold the summer school because we were counting on the money from the students, and they had already signed up. So we just wrote them and said the summer school instead of being in Oslo is going to be in Tecate. And we had to make it cheap because they had to bring their own tents.” That’s why they chose the location, near the U.S. border, about an hour from San Diego. The resort is still in that same location today.

STARTED AS A RESULT OF WORLD WAR II

HOLLYWOOD CAME CALLING

That no-frills camp had its origins in World War II, when Szekely and her husband, a native of Hungary, were living in Southern California, and as a result of his refusal to return to Europe to serve in the military, an order was issued for his arrest as a deserter. “We didn’t collapse,” Szekely recalls. “He was married to an American, and we were living and working in Hollywood. But then we got a letter two weeks later from U.S. Immigration and Naturalization, and it said that if he was found in our country on June 1, 1940, he would be arrested and shipped back to his country. So we went to Mexico.” Her husband, a renowned scholar, had planned to teach a summer school session in Oslo. “We knew we would have

What they started as a summer health camp was so successful that several participants wanted to come back and spend the winter, because the weather was so gorgeous. The Szekelys had no money at the time, but they could afford to rent the land at $50 per month. “And it was years before we could buy property, and it was little by little by little that we assembled the land. Not long after its launch, Ranchco la Puerta became popular with Hollywood stars. “Burt Lancaster practically lived here between pictures,” Szekely says. “We built exercise bars for him because he came so often. He designed them and we built them.” The movie star worked out on those bars every morning. Bill Holden and Kim Novak were also regular guests. Social Life

Living Room of Heavenly Villas

MEANT TO BE HERE “I had no dreams for the ranch,” Szekely says. “I was thinking that as soon as the war was over, we were going to England. We had no intention of staying. So — and I say this all the time — we were meant to be here. It was nothing that we planned, created, plotted — none of that.” When they first arrived, they heard some weird stories about Kuchumaa being a sacred mountain. “My husband said, ‘Oh, it’s just folklore.’ We just paid no attention to it. What’s a sacred mountain to an educated, erudite European?” Szekely laughs. But after they’d been there for three or four years, there was a “very major” pow-wow on the mountain, and tribes came from all over the United States. Today, Szekely’s husband is buried on the mountain, as is her late son, Alexander. “That’s their home,” she says flatly. “We have a family cemetery, because this is our home. I’ll be buried there too eventually. No rush.”

She’s an author, advises Congress, and works in Washington on policies promoting fitness, health, and making more nutritious, natural foods available to Americans. Szekely is still at the ranch at least once a week, and always partakes of services, including massages, peels, manicures, and hairstyling. She thinks her daughter is doing a terrific job. “She is gifted, and I think in some ways it reflects her personality,” says Szekely. “She is very spiritual. She’s very musical. She’s an artist, and I think most of the classes reflect more of her.” But there are forces at work other than just human endeavor, she insists. “Anyone who thinks that they’re directing the whole thing could forget about it; it builds from itself,” Szekely says. “But I know that we’re here because we were meant to be here. I really believe that. And the reason it’s so successful is because we’re on the path that we’re supposed to be on.”

MORE PROJECTS & DAUGHTER RUNS THE RANCH Szekely’s daughter, Sarah Livia Brightwood, now runs the resort full time. But her mother has not slowed down at all. SocialLifeMagazine.com

RITZ-CARLTON BOSTON UNVEILS SPECTACULAR REDESIGN By Lizabeth Zindel

(Left) Hotel Lobby and Avery Bar (Top right) New Ballroom (Bottom right) Luxury Parkview Suite Guest Bedroom

s the preferred luxury hotel in Boston’s vibrant downtown, The Ritz-Carlton, Boston has a proud history of delivering the utmost level of sophistication and personal service to its guests. Located across from Boston Common and at the center of the exciting midtown revitalization, the fashionable property just completed a $13 million redesign, led by the renowned architecture firm Rockwell Group. The hotel’s impressive transformation gives The Ritz-Carlton’s 193 guest rooms and suites, corridors, ballroom, and Club Lounge an exciting, new relevance that’s inspired by some of Europe’s most elegant boutique hotels, with subtle decorative influences that pay homage to the literary greats Edgar Allen Poe and Ralph Waldo Emerson. The design concept drew inspiration from the soul of Boston, tapping into its rich heritage through the centuries. Historic materials such as saddle leather, linen, wood, and steel have been distilled into unexpected details. “The skill of Colonial craftsmanship — forging, hammering, embossing, and carving — is represented in rich, new materials and abstract forms,” said Gonzalo Bustamante, the studio leader at Rockwell Group. New wood paneling similar to that found in the hotel’s strikingly beautiful Avery Bar frames the corridor walls, while new carpeting with Old-World damask patterns, fragmented for a more modern look, greets guests in the hallways. As guests step into the elevator,

they face a 17th-century map of Boston engraved into a vintagelooking mirror, a visual reminder of the city’s rich history. Rockwell Group’s current redesign complements its previous redesign of The Ritz Carlton’s Luxury Parkview Suites and Presidential Suite, which drew inspiration from the inventiveness of the native Bostonian Benjamin Franklin and the artistic sensibility of the transplanted Bostonian Isabella Stewart Gardner, one of America’s foremost female patrons of the arts. The hotel’s transformation also includes an updated 3,500-square-foot ballroom with a new color palette; wall sconces providing warm lighting; antique decorative mirrors; and a painted canvas with a botanical theme by Toronto’s Moss and Lam. The 1,500-square-foot Club Lounge, a home away from home with a luxurious, residential feel, was updated with grand, custom millwork and flexible seating to accommodate groups of all sizes. Underscoring the hotel’s redesign is the arrival of the acclaimed new executive chef, Robert Bruce, who will oversee the hotel’s food and beverage programming as well as implement seasonal menus favoring local farmers and growers for the hotel’s sleek Avery Bar and award-winning Artisan Bistro. ritzcarlton.com/boston 10 Avery Street, Boston 617.574.7100 Social Life

FLYING THROUGH THE AIR WITH THE GREATEST OF EASE, TURKS AND CAICOS-STYLE By Mark Cobb

F

or many of us, time in the Caribbean equates to two things: peace and quiet. We dream of lounging by the pool or on the beach, and, when staying at a renowned resort, it’s tough enough to get out of bed (although no one really has any trouble making it as far as the spa). Trouble is, as Hamptonites, downtime isn’t exactly in our blood — there’s always something to do, and much of the time it involves water! That’s why channeling that energy to something that is patently and purely Caribbean is important when visiting the sea — especially Turks and Caicos. Luckily, T&C is particularly known for its magical blend of luxurious repose and upbeat water activities. Nearly every major resort is perfectly outfitted to satisfy the adventurer in you, whether it’s flying, gliding, surfing, or sliding. Or, you may opt for something slightly more specialized by visiting turksandcaicostourism.com.

OUR ON-THE-SCENE RESEARCH TURNED UP THESE CAN’T-MISS OPTIONS

PARASAILING You’ve seen others fly through the sky and thought to yourself: I could never do that. But, as the experts say, if you can sit, you can parasail. It’s as easy as that, although it is definitely something for the thrill seeker within us. As far as vacation thrills go, parasailing is a simple enough concept: one or more passengers are attached to a parachute, which is fastened to a motorboat, which forces you up and helps you glide high in the air to take in the freshest air and the most stunning views. KITE BOARDING AND WINDSURFING

JET SKIING

If you’re more of a land-based creature, this other kite-like activity might be for you — maybe. With kiteboarding, agility is a must and that’s why a thorough lesson is imperative for any novice. Technically, kiteboarding combines aspects of wakeboarding, snowboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, skateboarding, and gymnastics into one deliciously extreme sport. With this one, you gotta be ready to go big — or go home. To your luxury suite. Windsurfing is kiteboarding’s baby brother. All you really need is a good grip to stay stable on a surfboard while managing the intricacies of a sailboat and, voila, you’re showing off for beachgoers. Truth be told, this is one of the sexiest activities and a sure way to tempt a potential date. There’s nothing more appealing than an expert windsurfer, with perfect balance and posture, muscles gleaming, as he or she catches some wind and rips through the azure waves. Hearts a flutter!

By now, you’ve caught on that one of our themes is speed. One of the best ways to go for a ride in Turks and Caicos is by jet ski, whether solo or as a group. In fact, it’s a great way to explore the amazing shallow water of the region and the most efficient way to experience the wonder of the smaller pristine cays and stunning secluded beaches (except Grace Bay where jet skiing is restricted) that are not accessible by conventional charters. You’ll be in paradise, for sure, as you buzz through the mangroves and enjoy the natural beauty of the inlets and waterways that connect the cays.

AND BEYOND KLEIN’S CAMP A MAGNIFICENT SAFARI IN THE SERENGETI By Lizabeth Zindel

W

e drove through Tanzania’s expansive Serengeti until we spotted the thatched stone cottages of andBeyond’s Klein’s Camp perched on a hillside. The 4X4 safari vehicle headed up the incline, and as soon we got to the top, we were greeted by fifteen staff members singing in Swahili and playing the drums. The spirited welcome set the tone for what would become a joyous stay in the heart of wild Africa. Located on an exclusive concession with the best views of the Serengeti, Klein’s Camp is situated on refined, yet rugged, property. It has ten cottages made of local stone and makuti thatch (sun-dried coconut palm leaves), with rich wooden floors and soft cream furnishings. The rooms’ delightful details include framed illustrations of African maps and a box of watercolors for guests to paint the inspiring view from their private veranda. Klein’s Camp includes a beautifully furnished bar and lounge that offer breathtaking views of the wooded hillsides and rolling grasslands. The fantastic meals are served in the main dining room, a round cottage with a chalkboard announcing the day’s menus. The property’s pristine swimming pool is tucked into the hillside, and a safari shop offers locally made Maasai crafts. During our stay, we experienced spectacular game drives. One morning, we stopped in the vast plains to enjoy breakfast next to the Great Migration, the herds of zebra and wildebeest that fill the valley twice a year. Klein’s Camp is one of the few hotels in East Africa that offers game drives at night. We will always remember the thrilling evening we rode through the darkness as our guide tracked a pride of lionesses that were hunting in the savanna.

On our last night at Klein’s Camp, the gracious staff surprised us with a bonfire in the middle of the Serengeti. It was a magical evening with lanterns hanging from trees, delicious beverages and snacks, and a sense of camaraderie among everyone present. To get to the Serengeti, we flew from Kilimanjaro on Coastal Aviation (coastal.co.tz), the most popular airline in Tanzania. The excellent company has been in business for over 30 years and works with andBeyond, the company that owns Klein’s Camp, to ensure that travel is coordinated to perfection. An award-winning, luxury, experiential travel company, andBeyond offers tailor-made luxury safaris and tours in Africa, Asia, and South America. The andBeyond experience includes not just beautiful lodges and camps, but also a handpicked team of destination experts who look after you from the moment you touch down to the moment you leave for home. andBeyond Klein’s Camp andbeyond.com

could barely contain my excitement as we arrived at the breathtaking Mount Kenya Safari Club, an iconic estate located in the foothills of Africa’s second-highest mountain. The 120 royally appointed rooms set amid landscaped gardens blend refined sophistication and natural beauty with the allure of classic Hollywood. The property was originally the retreat of the Oscar-winning movie star and club founder, William Holden, and past guests included Winston Churchill, Bing Crosby, Ava Gardner, Steve McQueen, and Ernest Hemingway. The Canadian-based hotel group Fairmont has since taken over the property and restored the passion, glamour, and tradition of the club. Beautiful peacocks roam the manicured lawns that include a hedge maze, pristine swimming pool, and decorative ponds. The club lies on the Equator, which passes through the fashionable Zebar lounge, the lobby’s charming courtyard, and an enchanting rose garden. Having relaxed at our ravishing suite in the Southern Hemisphere, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Tusk’s Restaurant and Terrace in the Northern Hemisphere. Highlights of our stay included dancing at an Equator Crossing Ceremony with a Maasai tribe; horseback riding through fields where zebra grazed; and visiting the on-site animal orphanage, where we fed milk from a bottle to a young buffalo and met William Holden’s former pet, a 150-year-old turtle from the Galapagos. We also enjoyed a private breakfast on the slopes of Mount Kenya, where our fantastic SocialLifeMagazine.com

chef and waiter treated us to a meal with a view of the snowcapped peak. Our safari began at another historic Kenyan location, the Fairmont’s Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi. Built in 1904, the colonial-style property offers elegance from a bygone era. Since its inception, the Norfolk has been a traditional starting point for safaris and famous visitors have included Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt. The Fairmont led a $50-million refurbishment of the property, which includes 170 plush guest rooms and suites, eight conference rooms, a swimming pool, and tropical gardens. Superb dining includes the elegant Lord Delamere Terrace and Tatu, the award-winning signature steak house. The hotel is close to Nairobi’s finest attractions, including the home of the writer Karen Blixen, represented in the film Out of Africa, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Elephant Orphanage. The Fairmont’s third Kenyan address is the Mara Safari Club, a hotel tucked into the northwestern corner of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The 51 luxuriously furnished tents have private decks overlooking crocodiles and hippos in the Mara River. Adventure experiences include daily game drives using four-wheel drive vehicles, walking safaris, and sunrise balloon safaris floating majestically over teeming herds of wildlife. FOUR SEASONS BORA BORA PARADISE IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC By Devorah Rose

V

isiting the exclusive tropical paradise of the Four Seasons Bora Bora is a sensory experience unparalleled by any other destination. This tropical oasis shimmers with resplendent color before one even touches the ground. As our plane descended, I could see several shades of electric blue out my window. Stepping into the airport, my sister and I were welcomed with bright red flower leis. Next, we climbed into our private luxury boat and were whisked away to the Four Seasons resort, which is located on its own glorious private island. As we traveled through the South Pacific, the blue waves that lapped against the boat were even more mesmerizing up close. I half expected to see a mermaid emerge from the ocean. As soon as we arrived at the five-star hotel, I was overcome by its beauty. The resort is located in the string of coral islets surrounding Bora Bora’s main island, and the property overlooks the striking Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia. As I looked around at the palm trees and ocean, it hit me that I was fulfilling a lifelong dream! I had always wanted to visit this picturesque oasis. Now I was finally here and staying at one of the most breathtaking hotels in the world! Four Seasons Bora Bora has eighty-five overwater bungalow suites, fifteen overwater suites with plunge pools, seven luxury beachfront villa estates, and one private island. I stayed in one of the absolutely gorgeous overwater bungalows. Upon entering our suite, we found a bottle of Champagne chilled over ice. The room was beautifully decorated in Tahitian style, with traditional teak wood furnishings, high ceilings, and thatched roofs made from pandanus leaves.

After making a toast, we put on our bathing suits and jumped off our bungalow into the warm water. As I swam through the turquoise lagoon, I looked around at the beautiful view. Bora Bora is the most famous of French Polynesia’s Leeward Islands and was recently awarded the title “the best island in the world” by travel. usnews.com. I agree with that sentiment and can attest that this island’s beauty is unique and otherworldly. At the Four Seasons Bora Bora, I felt like I had discovered a hidden paradise. I couldn’t wait to explore the exquisite property. There were so many adventures to choose from at the resort. On our first day, we decided to swim with small sharks and feed stingrays. Feeding the sting rays was a surprising experience. The very social rays will eat right out of your hand! Another day, we snorkeled and saw tropical fish swimming through Bora Bora’s coral reefs. The resort is home to The Ruahatu (God of the Ocean) Lagoon Sanctuary. Here you can find over 100 species, including octopus, eagle ray, lizardfish, Picasso trumpetfish, sea urchin, and anemone. The Lagoon Sanctuary is involved in a number of research projects, including the study of larvae, fish behavior, and coral grafting. During our stay, we were thrilled to take a yoga class on the whitesand beach. The sound of the ocean while moving through each pose was an exciting and grounding experience. Another remarkable adventure was helmet diving. For this unique diving experience, we walked underwater surrounded by marine life while wearing an astronaut-style helmet that provided a constant air supply. Social Life

But I must admit we would have been perfectly content to never leave the Four Seasons. The property’s gorgeous pool located near the beach is as picturesque as an exquisitely captured postcard. The pool is surrounded by palm trees, and the Four Season attendants offer chilled towels and delicious frozen treats. The hotel has many other activities, including tennis, kayak and stand-up paddle boarding, and scuba diving. This year, the magnificent resort is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the overwater bungalow. The first was built in 1967, on the French Polynesian island of Moorea, by Newport Beach, California, ex-pats known as the famed “Balai Hai Boys.” Another

reason to celebrate is now it’s easier than ever to escape to paradise. The Four Seasons recently began providing a private jet option for guests who choose to avoid the hassle of commercial airlines from LAX to the island. Guests can select either non-stop flights with other Four Seasons guests or an exclusive private charter. I assure you, regardless of how you choose to travel to The Four Seasons Bora Bora, the trip will be the very definition of magical. This is a place to make memories! CLAUS PORTO AN ICONIC BRAND CELEBRATES 130 YEARS OF FINERY WITH A NEW FLAGSHIP STORE

Upon entering your room, a familiar fragrance reminds you that the hotel has more than earned its five stars: Hermès bar soap, lotions, shampoos, and conditioners represent a special touch that is often overlooked at similar properties. Speaking of touch, hefting the wand-like remote control for your exquisite Bang and Olufsen wide-screen is another reminder that no luxury has been overlooked. The bedding, like all other appointments, is impeccable. Yes, you will want to lather up with the exclusive suds, and you’ll marvel at the remind-you-of-your-home-theater TV, but you won’t want to spend too much time in your room: Bairro Alto is the trendiest neighborhood in town. Whatever your taste, modern or Old World, Bairro Alto, and all of Lisbon for that matter, is unrivaled. Trendy cafes are offset by dozens of Fado dinner clubs, a not-to-be-missed experience of traditional folk music. High-end fashion is complemented by funky boutiques and exceptional antique stores: you absolutely must bring home one or more porcelain tiles (you’ll know what we mean once you arrive). Above all, be prepared to be pampered and adored, whether you’re at Memmo Príncipe Real, or wandering this magical city: there is no place more inviting or engaging than Portugal.

While not every hotel in Portugal is appointed with Hermès, just about every authentic five-star sports something just as luxurious. The unmistakable packaging of a Claus Porto soap, or any other product in the brand’s growing portfolio, signals instant exclusivity. For over 130 years, the label has built its name on hand-crafted soaps infused with fine fragrances, drawn from ingredients found in Portugal’s lush countryside. The products are imbued with an artisan’s heart and soul, and are wrapped by hand in packaging illustrated with beautiful art. While you can find Claus Porto at the finest hotels and shops throughout Lisbon, you’ll want to visit Porto, home base of Claus Porto, to take in the full splendor of this magnificent brand. Opened in June, the new Claus Porto flagship store was overseen by architect João Mendes Ribeiro, who aimed to “underline the wealth of Claus Porto’s heritage: a heritage made up not only of the physical legacy of the past 130 years, but also the intangible heritage represented in the symbolic value of each historic object.” Guys, don’t miss Musgo Real hot towel shaves on Saturdays, a luxurious traditional barber service that pampers customers with the full range of Claus Porto male-grooming products. It’ll take your mind off the fact that your partner (and you’ll thank them) is spending a fortune on the world’s best soap while you’re getting coddled. Claus Porto clausporto.com

e asked Jayma Cardoso, the owner of the uber-trendy Surf Lodge, to name her favorite cocktail. Grey Goose kindly shared the recipe with Social Life.

LIQUID ASSETS - LONDON TO NEW YORK By Sharon Roth

W

hile gazing across the Atlantic at the horizon, drink in hand and thoughts in mind, it is time to expand our own boundaries and see what lies on the other side of the pond. Let’s be off . . . Upon arriving in London, we head to the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge for the Wimbledon-themed high tea, complete with bottomless Pimm’s cups — the signature drink of both cricket and Wimbledon; lucky visitors to the tennis matches consume roughly 40,000 pints a year (hopefully not each). The name derives from James Pimm, an 18th-century oyster bar owner, who created and served a concoction of dry gin, a mystery liqueur, fruit juices, and spices that is known today as Pimm’s No. 1. (The recipe is still a secret; supposedly, only six people know exactly how it is made.) With a low alcohol content of only 25 percent, Pimm’s remains a natural choice when all afternoon indulgence is in the immediate future. The rage for his creation became so overwhelming that Pimm wisely mass-produced and bottled it, along with Pimm’s Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6: whiskey, brandy, rum, rye, and vodka, respectively. To make, gently muddle ½ inch thick slice of cucumber and lemon slices in a chilled highball glass. Pour in 2 oz Pimm’s, add 4 oz 7UP, lemon-lime soda, or ginger ale, and stir to combine. Add ice to fill the glass, garnish with lemon twist, drink a few and then who cares who wins the match! Off to dinner at London’s latest hotspot, Sexy Fish. This Asian-inspired Mayfair mecca of mid-century glamour boasts Europe’s largest Japanese whisky collection of 313 bottles. It also has a spectacular onyx, smoky mirror, and raspberry leather décor filled with notable artwork and two of the largest coral reef tanks known to man. One of its many signature drinks, the F’Row, is a delightful blend of Grey Goose or Star of Bombay, Calvados, peach, lemon, Peychoud’s and rosemary bitters, and Sassy Le Cidre Rosé, garnished with apple blossom. Also not to be missed are the One Stone to Paloma, the

Frida, the Unami Martini, and the Pop Corn Old Fashioned. But New York of course has its own cachet. Back at home, stroll (or stumble) over to Madison Avenue Nello’s for arguably the best people watching on the East Coast, and sip on the Madison Sunset, its version of the summer cocktail of 2017, the Aperol Spritz. Crafted with two parts Aperol, one part Prosecco, a splash of club soda, and an orange slice, the Nello’s version of the sunset-inspired blood orange signature cocktail also includes one part St-Germain, a summer elderflower antidote to the natural bitterness of aperol and a nod to the Parisian-influenced architecture of the local neighborhood. Toast and enjoy the Madison Sunset with Nello’s famed crispy artichoke, lobster salad, and the simply ambrosial cannelloni with ricotta and wild mushrooms. Finally, celebrate your return to the Hamptons with Rosé on Sunset Beach or the refreshing Cucumber Gimlet at Gurney’s Montauk. Cheers! And here’s to the many fabulous flavors of international liquid assets! Social Life

SAVING GRACE SOUTHAMPTON’S OREYA OUTSHINE’S MANHATTAN’S BEST By Blaire Bass

G

reg Grossman is no stranger to the Hamptons nor the dining scene, even though he clocks in under the age of 25. He cut his teeth on the famed Georgica, which he took over when he was just 19. In shockingly short time, he’s made his mark with an atmospheric dining experience that’s tough to come by. Think Mykonos meets Saint-Tropez, and you’ve got the gist. His work is paying off, with a 3-Star “Excellent” review in the New York Times. Oreya has remained one of the only recipients of this coveted rating in the Hamptons. Social Life sat down with the culinary star to get an inside glimpse into why he’s the “it man” in Hamptons culinary delights. What was the impetus for Oreya’s Mediterranean menu? Having grown up out East, and traveled and cooked around the world, I knew that the Hamptons is a luxury vacation destination for so many people. These same people have enjoyed cuisine from SaintTropez, St. Barths, Mykonos, Ibiza, etc. I generally think of Mediterranean cuisine as offering Eastern flavors from Greece, Israel, with elements of French, Italian, and Northern Spanish influence.

quickly before pureeing with tahini, Meyer lemon juice and zest, olive oil, garlic, and salt. It remains bright green, garnished with thinlyshaved radish chips, za’atar spice, and olive oil. We serve it with fresh, warm pita bread or our vegetable crudite served on crushed ice (for the carb avoider). Name one cocktail that is unique to OREYA. One of our customer favorites is our OREYA old fashioned. We start with Pyrat rum and Demerara sugar, stirred down with grapefruit bitters, and a misting of Skinos Mastica, a Greek mastic liqueur. Another favorite is our new OREYA summer blonde ale, which is made exclusively for us by Bronx Brewery.

We hear the raw bar is to die for. Is the seafood locally sourced? We offer an extensive raw bar with rotating seafood, focusing on local items and several favorites from other parts of the U.S. and Europe. We offer a fish of the day on our dinner menu, which is always, always local, and highlights the best local ingredients available, depending on the season. We also offer special oyster preparations, in addition to the staples.

For the wine connoisseurs out there . . . what surprises do you have in the cellar? Our wine program is constantly evolving, featuring some big-name expected favorites, along with well-rounded California Chardonnay and Cabernet offerings, and some local gems. Our largest category remains White Burgundies from France — a dry and crisp minerality — and we have an extensive Rosé portfolio as well, ranging from Chateau Miraval to Chateau d’Esclans, and several smaller producers from Provençe.

Do you have a special dish you are particularly proud of ? One of my favorites is our green garbanzo hummus with za’atar and radish. We get green garbanzo beans from Oregon, and steam them

CENTRO TRATTORIA & BAR FRESH NEW TAKE ON OLD WORLD FLAVORS By Lizabeth Zindel

A

t Centro Trattoria & Bar, waiters move around the large open space wearing red shirts with a hashtag on the sleeve that reads “#bellobello.” This is an homage to Sal Biundo, the restaurant’s owner and culinary director. His favorite expression is bello bello, which translates into “beautiful beautiful.” Biundo’s enthusiasm for the best in life can be felt in the restaurant’s sophisticated yet warm ambiance. The venue attracts a clientele of all ages who come for the delicious cuisine as well as the fun vibe. Black-and-white vintage murals of glamorous women from the 1950s eating spaghetti hang on the walls of the airy space. One depicts a beautiful Sophia Loren along with her famous quote: “Tutto quello che vedete lo devo agli spaghetti.” (“Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.”) We stopped for dinner at Centro on our drive back to NYC. I had heard buzz about the restaurant and wanted to try it. Biundo curated Centro’s menu based on his family’s recipes. These nostalgic, yet modern, dishes are carried out by his chef, James Carpenter, formerly of American Hotel, The Living Room, and Della Femina. The restaurant celebrates the fusion of their experience and expertise. We started with warm bread from Sullivan Bakery, served with fresh olive oil, seasoned olives, and morsels of Parmesan cheese. For appetizers, we enjoyed the truly fantastic shrimp cocktail as well as a watermelon and crispy burrata served with

a panko crust and drizzled with lavender honey and balsamic glaze. Centro is known for its meatballs, which we happily sampled. The tender and flavorful morsels were served with an excellent red sauce and shaved Parmesan cheese. The mouthwatering Mediterranean grilled octopus was also a standout. For our main courses, we loved the chicken parmigiana served with the Centro insalata mista and the homemade pappardelle with a Bolognese sauce of veal, beef, and pork mixed with San Marzano tomatoes, cream, and grana padano cheese. For dessert, I recommend the sensational light and creamy tiramisu made in-house and the delicious gelato. The restaurant has an excellent wine list that includes “30 under $30.” An outstanding selection of cocktails includes the refreshing Sicilian Margarita made with Espolon tequila, Solerno liqueur, fresh lime, and blood orange. The blueberry mojito served with a spear of fresh ginger and blueberries was divine. To accompany dessert, I recommend Centro’s wonderful homemade limoncello, which will transport you to Italy.

ESMERALDA KOSMATOPOULOS By Eve Xanthopoulos

Eve Xanthopoulos always had a passion for art and completed a coveted internship at the Marian Goodman Gallery. From voraciously learning about the artists and their work to curating homes of art lovers, she proceeded to create her own company, The Xanth Group, where she privately advises and curates art for her clientele. Aside from working closely as a business manager for legendary artist Chuck Close, Eve spends her time as an author, philanthropist, art advisor, and entrepreneur. Her range of interests extend across continents and issues, including health, the arts, the environment, and children.

What inspires you? The way the creative process operates for me is still a little unclear, and I still have a hard time putting my finger on it. Inspiration comes to me in the most unexpected ways. There will be a sound I hear one day when walking in the street that will (for some obscure reason) remind me maybe of an interesting article I read a month ago online in the New York Times, a poem I learned in school when I was a teenager and thought I had forgotten everything about, an image that struck me on a glossy magazine last week . . . and suddenly all these elements will come together and form a crystal clear image in my mind and make absolute sense (at least for me). Then it is just a matter of materializing this image and bringing it to the physical world for the viewers to experience. Social Life

Can you explain the themes of your art? As a multi-media artist, I am driven by my desire to locate myself. I attempt to trace the boundaries of my persona in order to determine where I begin and where I end. My work investigates the definition and construction of identities, personal memories, culture, and collective histories in the contemporary culture. I approach the question from an anthropological and sociological perspective, placing myself as a translator between past and present, physical and virtual, and ultimately between one and the other. I decontextualize everyday-life material objects, inherited cultural symbols, and behaviors viewers can easily connect emotionally with and pair them with more unexpected elements to create a tension that will invite the viewer to challenge some commonplace ideas. Throughout the years, I have built a visual lexicon and a range of materials I use to talk about the themes that interest me. If you look back at works from five or six years ago, you find several recurring elements that are still very present today in my practice.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

The theme of hands seems to be recurring in your practice. A few years ago in the Hamptons you showed a large outdoor installation with five oversized white inflatable hands. Can you tell us more about it? Hands have indeed been playing a big role in my artistic vocabulary since the very beginning of my practice, be it through sculptures, videos, or more unconventional mediums such as inflatable sculptures. For instance, in the work you mentioned, titled The Palm Authority, which I showed in Bridgehampton in the summer of 2013, five white inflatable hands, ranging from eight to fourteen feet in height, were dominating a large outdoor space and used palm reading as a metaphor to represent the influence of society on the individual. Later in 2016, I went back to the image of the white hand in an installation called Fifteen Pairs of Mouths, but this time, the hands were life size casts that captured the various ways people are texting and questioned the relationship between the hand and the mouth in an era when we are increasingly “speaking with our thumbs” through the phone.

You seem to be more and more connected to the Middle East. Can you tell us more about that? In the last couple of years, I was invited to develop several projects in places like Beirut and Tehran, and each time I go to this area of the world, I feel that I discover new pieces of myself and of my Greek origins. As a Greek, I feel a very strong connection with the Middle East’s past, its cultures. Despite the current political context and power antagonisms that dominate the region, I find in the people that live there a lot of characteristics in common with what we Greeks have inherited from thousands of years of history. Esmeralda, your work speaks from exile. Where do these connections stem from? Exile has become an increasingly prominent subject of discussion in the news with the war in Syria and the worldwide refugee crisis it has triggered. However, interest in this concept goes back to antiquity. Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are centered around the sorrow of estrangement, hospitality, and homecoming. Social Life

I was very interested in the human feelings exile triggers throughout human history and the way our memory reconstructs the image of the place we call home, erasing bad memories and traumas to make room for the sublimated image of a lost paradise.

What’s your current project and what’s next? I am leaving to Athens in September for another two-month residency at Snehta to work on the second chapter of the project I started in Lebanon around the concepts of home, identity, and the relation to the other.

I went to Lebanon for a two-month residency at Beirut Art Residency to work with NGOs based in the refugee camps close to the Syrian border, creating various art-related activities with children that addressed the concepts of memory of home, nostalgia, and desire to return. For the works in L’amour de loin that I created there, I appropriated raw factual pieces of these daily interactions that I combined with mythological elements from the Homeric epic and literary references from the poetry of exile arisen from the Lebanese civil war. I then created a multidisciplinary body of work that looks at exile through time and space as a fundamental element of our human nature.

In Lebanon, I explored the idea of νόστος (homecoming), a key theme of the Odyssey. I would like to continue this project by looking at similar issues, this time from the perspective of the place where the person in exile finds shelter, and revisit the definition of ξενία (hospitality) in light of the current refugee situation in Athens, while directly engaging refugees and Athenians living side by side.

Working from life is an important learning experience and exercise, which also facilitates painting from my photographs in the studio. I work almost daily. Indulging in a variety of subjects and mediums enhances my artistic capabilities.

Where did you study? I received my BA from C.W. Post Colllege/L.I.U., New York, and then an MFA from the Instituto Allende/ U. of Guanajuato, Mexico. I also attended the Art Students League and the National Academy of Fine Art, both in New York City; and the Kokoschka School, in Salzburg, Austria.

Does your environment influence your work? Totally! Environment is a stimulus and my visual calculation is never at rest! The components of travel have definitely influenced my work: teaching art on cruises and drawing and painting at each port was an exhilarating and special experience which produced a solid body of work.

How have you evolved as an artist? I am basically a self-taught artist relying on ability, vision, concepts, curiosity, and much practice! Being prolific has better equipped me to render from life as well as from photographs.

EDWARD GRANGER CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST By Eve Xanthopoulos

Edward Granger, I tried to find you but I got lost in my imagination, 2015, Installation for a Hermès window, 12 ft. x 10 ft.

You are a fresh new artist. Did you go to art school? I graduated from the University of Louisiana’s architecture school in 2011. I got my degree and immediately started interning as an architect. I found the system to be a bit rigid and realized that I don’t take authority very well, so I decided to do my own thing. Through various networking, I got connected with Hermès very early into my career. I designed windows for them for a bit and not just typical windows. They were installations with

conceptual stories created by myself. From that point on, I started doing more windows, store designs, furniture, and other brand collaborations, and sometimes even worked as a freelance art director. I have always done large scale paintings, murals, and collages, but through the architecture school background, my studio practice has now become multi-disciplinary and multi-media. It’s really exciting to see how my work can be manipulated into so many different things. From form to function. Social Life

Your geometric wall murals are truly amazing. Describe what your vision is with them, and your process. My most recent murals have largely been about sacred mandalas combined with the Möbius strip theory. It’s an ongoing process that never ends. Much like the universe and energy. I combine my analytic geometric shapes with organic patterns and am able to create designs that ultimately have no end. It’s quite exciting.

You do a lot of charitable work with children. How does this experience make you feel, and how are you helping other communities through art? I’ve worked with a few schools in the Brooklyn area, like Achievement First Middle School, Harvest Collegiate High School, to name two, as well as jumping on board with Project Humanity to facilitate art programs in other countries. Q&A: THE IDEALIZED & HEROIC VISIONS OF MICHAEL DWECK THE RENOWNED PHOTOGRAPHER DISCUSSES THE END: MONTAUK N.Y. AND FILMING HIS FIRST DOCUMENTARY By Lizabeth Zindel

“I saw what I guess you could call old Montauk — or my old Montauk, because I suppose everyone has their own version of a place,” the visual artist Michael Dweck told me as we sat on a white couch at his photography studio in the West Village. “I saw the beaches, the girls, and the surfers on Ditch Plains. Romance. Fraternity. Some kind of paradisiacal enclave.” Dweck was describing his idealized view of the beachside community he captured in his book The End: Montauk, N.Y.

In early 2000s, Dweck rented a house on 29 Reuter Place, near Ditch Plains, and began taking photographs of the local surfers. He wanted to capture the raw and mythic landscape before it was changed forever by commercialization. The eye-catching tome was published in 2004 with five thousand copies, and that first edition sold out in three weeks. It was later revised and re-released in second and third editions, and has become a collector’s item (some copies selling on Social Life

the secondary market for over $10,000). Since the book’s publication, Dweck’s works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, and reside in prestigious international art collections. Dweck seeks to artistically investigate the ongoing struggles between identity and adaptation found within endangered societal enclaves. He is currently in post-production on his debut film, a documentary called The Last Race, which was filmed at Long Island’s Riverhead Raceway. The movie gives an impressionistic portrait of a small-town stock car racetrack and the tribe of bluecollar drivers who call it home. They are struggling to hold on to an American racing tradition as the world around them is transformed by globalization. When the film is completed, it will join a larger mixed-media project that includes sculpture, photography, installations, and video art. At Riverhead Raceway, the drivers race 1970s American cars. They have been repainting them for more than forty years, and every time a driver needs to fix a part, he digs in the junkyard like an archeologist looking for dinosaur bones. During our interview, I spoke with Dweck about his selection process for the surfers who appeared in The End, his favorite photograph in the book, and the serendipitous detour that led him to The Last Race.

What is your personal connection to Montauk? I grew up on Long Island. I learned to use a camera on the beaches as a child, and when I went to Montauk for the first time, it felt like the pieces of the puzzle were starting to fit together. How did you select the people in the photographs of The End? I started to get to know the groups of people in Montauk and almost cast for a movie. I would meet one person and photograph them. Then I would ask them, “Who is part of your group that you think is also an interesting person?” This one girl, Sydney, was bright, beautiful, a tom boy, and a bit of a renegade. Those are all qualities that I kind of like. I ended up meeting her, but she didn’t want to be photographed. From her, I met her boyfriend, Matt, who is a painter. He introduced me to his friend Bubba. From Bubba I met this girl Niva. She came from Puerto Rico and was a waitress at Harvest Restaurant and fell in love with Montauk. What photo from The End do you enjoy looking at most? The photo of my dad catching his first striped bass in Montauk. I dedicated the book to him. He passed away before the book was released. on and off for about five years, spending part of the summer race season capturing the sculptural forms of the cars through large format photography and sculpture. Through this process I discovered a narrative that was beyond what still photography alone could capture. I wanted to film the unfolding story at the track in a way that would push the boundaries of conventional documentary storytelling, express the intensity of the racing experience, show the strange beauty of life at the track, and document the culture of blue-collar American racing in previously unseen ways.

How did you come up with the idea for your documentary The Last Race? I was coming back from Montauk trying to avoid traffic and cut through Riverhead. I saw a big metal sign leaning against a pole that said, “Racing tonight.” Traffic was killing me so I pulled in. I was instantly taken back to when I was a kid attending the racetrack near my house, with my father and brothers on Wednesday and Saturday nights. The smell was the same; the noise was as loud as I remembered it, and the same 1970s American cars were racing, but now they had 40-plus years of scrapes, scratches, layered paint and personalized blazonry on them. The cars themselves looked like folk art, and when the race started it was like watching performance art. How did you begin working on the film? I had been shooting still photography at the Riverhead Raceway SocialLifeMagazine.com

What are some of the themes of The Last Race? The Last Race is an impressionistic portrait of a Long Island stock car racetrack as its octogenarian owners struggle to maintain an American racing tradition in the face of a real estate development boom fueled by corporate greed. The film combines observational documentary, stylized imagery, and the symphonic merging of motion and sound to convey the mysterious beauty, quirky characters, and exuberant passion shared by the last custodians of an endangered tradition. Sometimes the racetrack made me think of how it must’ve been like at the Roman Colosseum. Thousands of people watching the spectacle. They let the lions out. They let the gladiators out. It’s dangerous, loud, and visceral. It’s a place where the common man has a chance to turn into a hero. Michael Dweck michaeldweck.com Facebook @TheLastRaceFilm

NICOLE NOONAN MEET THE “FAIRY GODMOTHER OF DIVORCE” By Blaire Bass Crowned the “Fairy Godmother of Divorce” by the media, Nicole Noonan understands the nuances of the divorce system from the inside. The esteemed CEO of New Chapter Capital, Inc. is frequently quoted and has appeared in national media as an expert on divorce-related issues. New Chapter Capital, Inc. helps fund individuals going through a divorce to ensure “a level playing field.” Her firm provides nonrecourse cash advances for divorce litigants. Nicole is committed to promoting self-confidence in clients so that they may feel empowered to overcome hurdles in their personal relationships. Before beginning New Chapter Capital, Inc., Nicole practiced as a matrimonial attorney. She was instrumental in the litigation of many complex family-law cases involving both financial and custody disputes. Her cases included some of the leading reported-on cases in these areas. Social Life sat down with Nicole to learn more about how she helps clients avoid vicious divorce battles like in the movie War of the Roses. At its core, how does New Chapter Capital, Inc. help people? At the heart of my business is the ability to provide equality through equity so that no one is forced into taking a settlement less than what they deserve because there is an imbalance of access to funds. Men and women turn to my company during a divorce so they may be empowered with funding. What was the impetus for getting you into the business of helping others? As a matrimonial attorney, I would see clients come into my office every day who did not have the ability to retain my firm. Though they had been well off during their marriage, many were cut off financially when they were faced with a divorce. I met everyone from the stay-at-home mom who gave up her career to raise a family, only to have all credit cards cut off during a divorce, to the wife of 40 years who received a request for divorce as a total surprise, and had all her assets tied up in real estate and frozen during the pendency of the divorce. Most people do not financially plan for a divorce, and it can be a staggering expense to retain the right divorce team. I knew there had to be a way to help them so they did not receive less than what they were entitled to.

What do you love about your job? I love to receive the notes and calls from people updating me on how their lives have been changed for the better. We aid litigants to fund their attorney and cover expert fees while maintaining their standard of living. Clients get back on their own two feet and start the career they have always wanted. For those who are starting to go through the painful process of divorce, do you want to share any words of wisdom? No matter how difficult the process looks for you, know that help is available — whether emotional or financial — and it is always a good idea to talk it out. This, too, is just a transition, one that is likely for the better. Nicole Noonan newchaptercapital.com 212.404.7807 nn@newchaptercapital.com Social Life

EDDIE BURKE JR . RENAISSANCE MAN IN THE HAMPTONS EVENTS PERMITS, REAL ESTATE, DWI REPRESENTATION, AND MORE By Blaire Bass

I

ts multi-acre estates, beachside properties, and luxury accommodations make the Hamptons a veritable party paradise, with much of its famed reputation as a summer destination owing to how often it’s been the setting of the social events of the season. But what really makes a Hamptons party on your calendar possible is a single piece of coveted paper known as a special events permit. So while raising a glass to toast the host is customary, we forget that any grand celebration must first be permitted to happen at all. And we know the man who really gets the parties started: Edward Burke Jr. The East End, where Edward Burke Jr. both lives and bases his law practice, Edward Burke Jr. & Associates, has seen an explosive growth in parties throughout the townships in the Hamptons. Burke says, “During the summer, our case volume triples.” His Sag Harbor office handles dozens of special events permits. He has also carved out a thriving criminal defense practice focused on various cases, including DWIs, covering the multiple justice courts. The exponential growth in business led to the hiring of Attorney Melissa Aguanno, who has recently joined as an associate for the firm, assisting in its criminal defense department. Aguanno brings solid experience, hailing from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Burke’s law firm has always handled real estate cases and it was a natural extension for him to introduce his new real estate brokerage business called Burkeshire Realty, which has already seen tremendous growth in its client base. His desire is to cater to his clients not only in a legal capacity but also to explore and seek out incredible real estate properties in the Hamptons for his exclusive (and very private) clientele. Something must have been in the water (of the Long Island Sound) because his entire family practices law. Edward and his siblings, Denise and Joseph, followed in their father’s legal footpath and are all practicing attorneys. Edward Sr. who is a recently retired judge from the Southampton Town bench, heads up the law firm of Burke & Sullivan in Southampton, and the family SocialLifeMagazine.com

They retired the restaurant in the early 2000s and then developed the land and property into a condo complex overlooking Noyac Bay. The restaurant business has not entirely escaped Burke, however, as years ago he opened Jeff and Eddy’s Seafood in Sag Harbor and now enjoys acting as a landlord to the famed LT Burger with celebrity chef Laurent Tourondel. edwardburkejr.com 631.725.3131

LASTING CONNECTIONS FALL IN LOVE By Jacob Puck

T

he end of summer is fast approaching and while the cloud of summertime sadness looms ahead as we say goodbye to light and breezy beach days, maybe we find comfort in also saying goodbye to light and breezy, but perhaps fruitless, summer flings. It’s time for you to fall . . . seriously in love. “September through the holidays is when many relationships begin — summer travels are over, wedding season ramps up, and holiday parties are plentiful,” says the professional matchmaker Sameera Sullivan, the founder and CEO of Lasting Connections. “There’s nothing like the holidays to remind you of the warmth of family, so you’re naturally more inclined to want to settle down.”

COMMIT TO FINDING A COMMITMENT WITH SAMEERA’S TIPS FOR FALLING IN LOVE

1

Break up with your summer flings! Think of flings as summer-only appropriate, like white jeans. If you’re dragging them into fall, you’ll get confused about which season it is and remain in friends-with-benefits territory when you’re supposed to be falling.

2

Make plans and meet people. Starting in September, we have all kinds of things to look forward to, from Oktoberfest to Halloween parties and Friendsgiving to Christmas parties. There are endless opportunities to start something new!

3

Hot Halloween. The more Halloween parties you go to, the better! Inhibitions are low, people are more playful, and there’s a guaranteed conversation starter: your super creative costume. Bonus points if it speaks to your personality — like a character you love or a food you’re into.

4

Holiday hate no more. Don’t ever say you hate the holidays — that, right there, will ensure solo status forever! Even if you’ve bonded with someone over your holiday hate, optimism and positivity are the best defaults.

5

Be cheerful. Simply spreading the cheer is a wonderful way to find your lasting connection: smile, engage with people, give a compliment. Good energy attracts good people!

STEPHANIE CONTE BE THE SPARK IS TAKING OFF By Christine Montanti

W

hen you meet Stephanie Conte, a private airplane pilot, and the Chief Operating Officer of Christina Chirumbolo Consulting, you are immediately captivated by her incredible drive and enthusiasm. It’s hard not to be totally enthralled by this 28 year old self-motivated, established entrepreneur and founder of Be the Spark Charity who manages to raise and donate substantial amounts of money to benefit various causes and individuals. This remarkable young woman started flying aircraft when she was just 21 years old. Originally, Stephanie started flying helicopters as a hobby. “I never had a fear of heights; it never even crossed my mind. I just started doing it and thought it was really cool,” Stephanie remembers. During the time Stephanie was training to be a helicopter pilot, she was a passenger on a World War II trainer plane that crashed. The aircraft had engine problems immediately after takeoff. It flipped in mid-air and suddenly went down. Miraculously, Stephanie only suffered minor injuries. “I was afraid to go up in a plane again, but with the encouragement of my friends, I was flying one week after the crash,” Stephanie says. “At first I was scared, but at the end of the flight I was fine. I realized that the circumstances that happened during the plane crash rarely exist when you fly. “Today Stephanie is a captain, flying large, privately owned jets. She is also is a duel flight instructor for private planes and helicopters and as an Airline Transport Pilot, she maintains the highest credentials for flying both types of aircraft. Previously, Stephanie has worked as an Aviation Safety Inspector for the FAA. Not only is Stephanie an established pilot, but As COO of Christina Chirumbolo Consulting, located in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Stephanie oversees operations and manages approximately twenty musical artists. The consulting firm is known for developing and launching Billboard’s Platinum Artist and 2017 Grammy Award winner, Daya. “I manage the company, handle all the finances and I do mostly consulting for musical artists,” Stephanie explains. “Our company’s purpose is to develop and launch musical talent. We offer celebrity musical enrichment camps, and we launch artists independently. We have smaller scale artists to very established celebrity artists in our firm.” Aside from managing her consulting company, Stephanie is also an independent real estate investor. She even managed to purchase her very first home when she was just eighteen years old. What is so significant and so unique about Stephanie is that she has reached an extraordinary level of success at a very young age, something most aspiring entrepreneurs only dream about. In 2015, when the vibrant mogul was just 26 years old, she founded Be the Spark Charity.

“Prior to founding the charity I always gave back to causes and not necessarily to a particular cause, but to a family or an individual who needed financial assistance. If I heard about someone who was desperately in financial need, I always felt compelled to help. Over the years I decided that I required a more organized way of donating my money. Initially, I started the charity with my own funds, and once it was established, I was able to raise money through fund raisers and private investors,” explains Stephanie. Be the Spark Charity is designed to assist and make a difference in people’s lives. Proceeds from the organization are donated to local causes such as children with disabilities, individuals who have special needs and families who are in financial distress and require immediate assistance. sparkcharity.com Instagram: Christina_Chirumbolo Social Life

RORI SASSOON TEN QUESTIONS ON LOVE WITH THE ELITE MATCHMAKER By Sienna Davenport “We are the personal shoppers for your personal life. New York is such a dynamic city and people don’t have the time to date,” says Rori Sassoon, the co-founder of Platinum Poire, an invitation-only high-end matchmaking company. Sassoon, one of Manhattan’s most exclusive matchmakers, launched Platinum Poire with her business partner, Dr. Errol Gluck. They work together to provide clients with complementary advice and services on the various aspects of dating. With an impressive background in fashion and styling, Sassoon offers the image consultation for her clients, while Dr. Gluck, an executive life coach, has the keen ability to discern a person’s patterns and what they’re attracted to. Sassoon says, “The magic of our business is matching people on the inside before we match them on the outside, because the inside is what will make the relationship last.” What are common roadblocks people come up against when searching for love? A lot of people are not self-aware and have unrealistic expectations. I want to make sure people’s expectations are healthy and they know what they bring to the table. What do you think about texting and dating? Texting is the worst form of communication ever. You can’t tell a person’s tone. People should be talking on the phone. It’s more of a connection. A man shouldn’t text a woman before the first date unless asking when is a good time to call her. If a man keeps texting, what can a woman write to turn the conversation to phone calls? A woman could write, ‘I love your messages, but I would really love to hear your voice.’ She should be sweet, and not pushy about it. What is your advice for men going on a first date? Don’t get to the date and ask, ‘Where do you want to go?’ That is such a turn-off. What are some common mistakes women make while dating? A woman should never emasculate a man because once you do, it’s over. Some women act like a man’s mother by over-managing them, coming across as too bossy, or jumping on top of them with all of their problems at the end of the day. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Should the first date be just drinks? I think people should spend the extra hour and do dinner, because you might uncover something about that person you like. After the first date, should the woman text the guy to thank him? She should text, ‘I had such a great time. Thank you so much.’ I wouldn’t write, ‘Let’s do it again.’ She should leave room for the man to pursue her. What do you think women most look for in a relationship? Safety and security. They want to feel like they are going home again. Women love to feel protected and real men want to protect. What are men most looking for in a woman? Men want someone who makes them feel nurtured, loved, and understood. What is your advice for lasting love? It is better to be happy and together than to be right. When people argue and need to have the upper hand, it’s very hard to co-exist. Leave your ego at the door.

A PSYCHIC EVENING WITH JEFFREY WANDS By Christine Montanti

I

t’s 7 o’clock in the evening in the media division of the WALK 97.5 F.M. radio station, located in Farmingdale. The enormous, contemporary space is overflowing with hundreds of guests anxiously awaiting world renowned psychic medium, Jeffrey Wands. The diverse crowd is seated on chairs and couches precisely placed throughout the luxurious area. When the critically acclaimed psychic medium enters the room, the audience abruptly stops talking. People quickly shift their bodies toward the edge of their seats hoping to be approached by Jeffrey. Their expressions are incredibly telling; it’s obvious just how eager they are to connect with loved ones who have passed away. Known for his paranormal ability to communicate with the dead, Jeffrey currently hosts his own radio show, Psychic Sundays, on WALK 97.5 FM at 9 p.m.. Aside from making numerous appearances on national TV shows and authoring several bestselling books, Jeffrey is frequently sought after by law enforcement agencies to help solve high profile murder cases and provide clues to locate missing persons. He has a roster of international clients which include A –list celebrities and the world’s most influential entrepreneurs who will wait up to one year to see him. The media room is exceptionally cold for a relatively pleasant summer evening. When Jeffrey communicates with the dead, the energy from spirits creates heat, and it makes him feel extremely hot and uncomfortable. “I can feel the energy of the spirits, Jeffrey explains. “It’s like a tingling feeling that

produces a tremendous amount of heat.” As Jeffrey slowly walks toward the center of the audience, everyone is fixated on him. The silence in the room is so profound, it’s deafening as Jeffrey approaches audience members. He reveals detailed information from loved ones who have passed away, and emotions vary from utter sadness to complete joy for the people receiving these communications from departed family members, friends and pets. Regardless of their initial reaction to the highly personal messages and uncannily accurate information Jeffrey provides, audience members feel relief because ultimately, he brings them a level of peace and closure. Jeffrey’s personal appearances sell out very quickly — he is very comedic and charming when he hosts special events. At times, he even jokes about the information he delivers from loved ones who have crossed over; Jeffrey makes everyone laugh and the audience feels at ease. “Some people don’t have access to a single appointment with me”, Jeffrey explains. “It’s also more cost effective for the client to attend a group event. I find the events to be very entertaining because I am able to reach more people and deliver messages to a variety of people at once. I love the energy and the excitement I get from a group setting. We serve food at the events and the individuals tend to feel more secure and relaxed in a group. It’s less intimidating.” Jeffrey Wands jeffreywands.com Social Life

CLASS MOM THE BRILLIANT DEBUT NOVEL BY LAURIE GELMAN, THE VETERAN MEDIA PERSONALITY By Elizabeth Darwen

L

aurie Gelman’s debut novel Class Mom: A Novel is a clever take on a year in the life of the kindergarten class mom, Jen Dixon. Jen is not your typical Kansas City, Missouri, kindergarten class mom — or a mom in general. Jen has two college-aged daughters by two different men (probably musicians), and it is her second time around the class-mom block with five-year-old Max — this time with a husband, who is Max’s father, by her side. Though her best friend and PTA president sees her as the “wisest” candidate for the job (or oldest), not all of the other parents agree. From recording parents’ response times to her emails about helping in the classroom to requesting contributions of “special” brownies for curriculum night, Jen’s methods do not always win approval from the other parents. Throw in an old flame from Jen’s past, a hyper-sensitive “allergy mom,” a surprisingly sexy kindergarten teacher, and an impossible-to-please Real Housewives-wannabe, causing problems at every turn, and the job really becomes much more than she signed up for. Relatable, irreverent, and hilarious in the spirit of Maria Semple, Class Mom: A Novel is a fresh, welcome voice in fiction — the kind of novel that real moms clamor for, and a vicarious thrill-read for all parents, who will be laughing as they are being liberated by Gelman’s acerbic truths. Class Mom: A Novel is available wherever books are sold.

Currently Ackerman’s gallery is filled with important paintings by 19th- and 20th-century artists, including Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall. His gallery currently has sculptures by Fernando Botero, Deborah Butterfield, and a pair of Robert Indiana Love sculptures. He also sells work on consignment. “We represent collectors buying and selling major works by Picasso, Basquiat, and Modigliani,” he says. “Those are things that we’re involved in, but they’re not necessarily in the gallery.” The gallery operates as a concierge, offering fine art independent advisory services to new and seasoned collectors and corporate clients. Kenny’s expertise is in finding what people are looking for, with transparency. “We’re very good at finding things for collectors. We can find pretty much anything.” During his years studying the art market, Ackerman established a global network of art professionals, private advisors, and galleries that he calls on. “Not only do I find things, but my forte is helping people to not overpay.”

illennials are coming into their own in the philanthropic world, and real estate heirs Larry and Toby Milstein, aged 22 and 24, respectively, are at the forefront. This summer, their focus is on Audrey Gruss’s Hope for Depression Research Foundation. The siblings were the junior chairs of the 5K Walk of Hope fundraiser in Southampton. Each Milstein sibling took leadership of a foundation at the age of 18, and the pair spearheaded a $5 million gift to help establish the Vivian and Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center, named after their grandparents, at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Both are also active in a slew of other organizations, including the High Line benefit with James Franco, the New York Philharmonic, the Frick Young Fellows, and ABT, the latter for which they gave a party at their NYC apartment, the former home of Leonard Bernstein. “These events bring young people together with people of all ages to make a difference for a cause,” Larry says. During college, Toby started Wear It: Don’t Bear It, which sold pendants benefitting the Sandy Hook Promise Foundation. More recently, she cofounded Repurposed, which collects beauty products for women in job training programs at Coalition for the Homeless. “We help women feel confident, and that helps them succeed on job interviews,” Toby says. Larry is also active in LGBT causes like the Human Rights Campaign, and he supported the Hamptons Tea Dance at Nova’s Ark in July. The Milsteins advocate using social media to spread the word about philanthropic endeavors.

Kenny Ackerman had been a trader after college, but after a visit to the Met in 2003, he decided to study art, and by 2010, he had founded Ackerman’s Fine Art, in Westchester County. He now advises clients in NYC and the Hamptons on what to buy and how to buy it at the best price. He saw a lot of pitfalls in the art business and less-than-opaque dealings. “I started a business where I can help collectors, and protect them from the shady things that can go on.”

PERFORMED AT A BRIDGE TOGETHER

MS. WORLD ELITE 2017

By Peter Elston

B

ridgefest 2017, now in its second year under the auspices of Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc., presented A Bridge Together, a special concert and Newport Jazz Festival extra that connected jazz, African beats, and Indian Carnatic music, on the Quad Stage at Fort Adams State Park. The two-part concert featured dance segments by the 17-year old twins Riya and Sara Kapoor, who were accompanied by a Carnatic music orchestra that featured musicians from India. Guru Swati Bhise was the conductor and choreographer for the music and orchestra arrangement for this dance segment. The jazz quartet was led by the award-winning guitarist Rez Abbasi. West African compositions, directed by the noted West African choreographer and dancer Maguette Camara, rounded out the evening. Fusing Indian, African, and American dance and music, while demonstrating the cultural roots that these traditions have in common, A Bridge Together raised the question: Are we so different after all? The answer is up to the audience after seeing and hearing this upbeat, visually exciting melding of cultures. A Bridge Together, like many of the Newport Festivals’ events, aims to educate and entertain audiences by introducing them to cultures from distant places and celebrating what unites people in Newport: the love of music and movement, the inspiration it provides, and sharing the experience.
