PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Hamptons summers always go by so fast! We are in mid-July and it seems like time is flying by. How can we slow it down? The simple answer is to completely disconnect: turn off your cell phone and computer. If that is impossible, try and limit your activities over the weekend, and just focus on a select few. Remember, it’s quality, not quantity. Simple, not complex. There are many ways to spend your time in the Hamptons. One of my favorites is to explore. It’s always fun to be a little adventurous and try new things, or discover new places. There are many hidden gems and secret treasures waiting for you. The summer is also the peak season for charity events. Every weekend there is a wide array of functions in the Hamptons for you to choose from. Make sure you choose well. Anyone can attend a charity event, but it takes someone who is committed and passionate about the given cause to really make a difference. It’s an great summer! Time to put on the brakes and slow it down. Have a great July! Justin Mitchell

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Each day, our actions have either a positive or negative impact on the planet. Here on the East End of Long Island, we’re blessed with some of the world’s most beautiful natural spaces. But that beauty is something we’ve inherited from prior generations, and something we are obligated to pass on to the next. It’s important for every one of us to take measures into our own hands to preserve our natural resources, reduce greenhouse gases, and halt global warming. First and foremost, we need to be aware that the energy we use, the food we eat, the clothes we buy, and the way we travel are having a massive impact on our planet. Ninety-seven percent of peer-reviewed scientific papers agree. To start to address the issue, you need to know your own baseline. You can quickly calculate your personal ecological footprint with a visit to myfootprint.org. Speaking of natural resources, one of the most precious and overlooked is time. Hours pass like water flowing through the fingers of an open hand — it’s something quick and elusive that we can feel yet never truly grasp. This weekend, we are grateful that we have the freedom to do what we wish with our time. And although that may sound like the classical definition of freedom, remember that empathy and giving back are essential ingredients to true happiness. So understand your impact, and give back to the planet by being kind to it. The time is now. Let’s stop wishing for a better world and start making it a better world.

With love,

Devorah Rose

POUPETTE ST BARTH By Robyn Michele

P

oupette Giraud founded Poupette St Barth in 1995. Poupette is her teenage nickname, and it translates from the French to “little doll.” La femme enfant, i.e. cute, adorable, and fresh, epitomizes the DNA of the brand. Poupette St Barth is the love story of a woman and an island in the French West Indies. Poupette arrived to this lost paradise by boat in 1979 and never left. Sixteen years later she created her own line of clothing, originally selling through a stylish boutique on the grounds of the famed restaurant Le Tamarin, whose garden was filled with frangiapani. The frangipani flower, which epitomizes freshness, is now the Poupette St Barth logo. Poupette’s extraordinary feel for color, energy, and movement translates into clothes that are feminine, romantic, and playful. Her creations quickly became a favorite among St Barth’s elite clients. Numerous celebrities have been photographed wearing Poupette St Barth. The brand opened a flagship store in the island’s main town, Gustavia, in 2000, followed by a store at the Hotel Le Taiwana on Flamands beach. International distribution followed in the U.S. via luxury department stores (Saks, Bloomingdale’s), selective retail stores, and online shops. Today, the brand has become iconic and synonymous with the St. Barth lifestyle and French joie de vivre. MEET THE DESIGNER HANIA’S ANYA COLE TURNS CASHMERE INTO MAGIC By Cecilia Bloom

H

ania New York, a luxury knitwear collection founded by Anya Cole in 2012, brings cashmere lovers pieces that are individually knit by hand in New York City. The collections are born using Scottish and Italian cashmeres from the finest mills in the world. Light and butter-soft, the pieces have incredible drape and a relaxed silhouette. Inspired by Anya’s background as a classically trained ballet dancer, the designs embody ease of movement, creativity, and individuality. They are simply so soft and sophisticated! Social Life sat down with Anya to learn more about her exquisite cashmere designs. What inspired you to pursue cashmere fashion? The pure luxury of the yarn and the way it drapes and feels on the body. Your pieces are so sumptuous and soft! How do you source the materials? We work with only the finest yarn mills in Italy and Scotland and have them create our own custom twists and colors. The custom twists mean that all our pieces can be machine washed and dried. Empowering women is at the heart of your company mission. Can you tell us how you find local women knitters? It happens organically as each knitter reaches out to family and friends in her community who are gifted knitters. All of our knitters have come to us through word of mouth. Is there one particular piece that truly reflects the Hania New York style? Any of the larger pieces — the bigger the better. I don’t see the larger sweaters as covering up . . . whoever you are will shine through. We absolutely love how you custom make each piece depending on the buyer’s preferences. How quickly can you deliver an ordered piece? Usually it will take a few days for an accessory, two weeks for a sweater, and three to four weeks for a major statement coat. SocialLifeMagazine.com

What are your thoughts on cashmere in the summer? Cashmere is a natural fiber and so it breathes, especially when mixed with some silk and cotton in lightweight open-weave stitch styles. We make styles that can be fabulous cover-ups or something to wear in the Anya Cole evening at the beach or on a yacht when the ocean breezes can get quite chilly. What is your personal favorite piece? The large Mara sweater — either solid or color-blocked. If Hania had a mantra, what would it be? As my mother used to tell me growing up in Poland, ‘If you need it, you make it.’ Hania New York hanianewyork.com

WGACA ULTIMATE BIRKIN GUIDE By Devorah Rose

S

eth Weisser and Gerard Maione are the ultimate curators of luxury fashion. With over 25 years of experience purveying the most coveted high end pieces, they know quality and craftsmanship. Now the two share their essential knowledge about the iconic Birkin bag and answer all our questions.

1

Why are Hermès Birkins a good investment? According to time.com’s report on a study conducted by Baghunter, the annual return on a Birkin is 14.2% — an average return that beats out both the S&P 500 index and the price of gold. The supply and demand also heavily impact a Birkin’s value. With the waiting list for a new Birkin averaging six years, women are perhaps even more eager to purchase a pre-owned Birkin on the resale market than they are to wait six years to buy a new one.

2

What does a Birkin say about a woman? A woman carrying a Birkin signifies unparalleled and elevated taste when it comes to luxury and style. A Birkin is the ultimate symbol of success, and automatically commands recognition for any woman (or man) who carries it.

3

Are some Birkins better than others? All Birkins are made with the same authentic quality craftsmanship, though different sizes, colors, and materials change the value. Many are also custom-made or special editions, which increases their collectability. Right now, 25cm and 30cm are the sizes trending strongest in the resale market.

4

What is the ultimate Birkin? The Himalaya is considered to be the most coveted and valuable handbag in the world. The rarest of all Himalayas (and the most expensive) features 174 grams of solid gold and 10-carat diamond hardware. This Birkin was sold at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong in 2017 for upwards of $365,000.

Social Life



FASHION

5

What color Birkin should every woman have? The classic black or gold is a definite starter for any collection. As you become more advanced, you should expand your palette, and play around with some of the brand’s unique and rare shades.

6

How do you pick the best Birkin size? Hermès Birkins come in five sizes (25cm, 30cm, 35cm, 40cm, 50cm), so your best choice depends on how you plan to use it. If you want a going-out bag, opt for a 25cm. If you’re planning to use it for travel or as a work bag, the 40cm or 50cm Birkin is your winner. Plus, both will accommodate your laptop.

7

Is the Birkin really the best-quality bag out there? Yes. The Birkin is the most luxurious, highest-quality handbag you can own. The price is commensurate with the quality craftsmanship that goes into cutting, sewing, and crafting each bag by hand and to perfection — it takes a single artisan 48 hours to make one bag. This attention to detail makes a Birkin bag unlike any other on the market.

Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream Men molecular-cosmetics.com Yes, it’s a strange name for a men’s product, but Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream Men ($215) is perhaps one of the best, and certainly most effective, men’s 24-hour moisturizers available. THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF GARDENING By L. A. Dawson

ave you ever wondered why you feel so joyful while working in your garden? Joy is just one of the many reasons to include gardening in your daily activities. Our stressful lives make us a community of irritable people who do not take the time to care for ourselves. Stress takes its toll on our health. When we feel happy with our hands in the soil, it is partially due to the nonpathogenic mycobacterium vaccae. Scientists have found that this bacterium has the same effect on neurons as the drug Prozac. It also can stimulate serotonin production, which causes relaxation. Exposure to both dirt and plants can help boost the immune system. Spending some time in the sun midday without sunscreen can be a good idea. This allows for skin to make vitamin D from the sun’s UVB rays. Skin types vary from I (pale, burns easily) to VI (dark, doesn’t burn). The amount of time it takes to produce enough vitamin D can vary from 15 minutes to two hours depending on your skin type. See vitamindcouncil.org for more information about this. Gardening can also reduce the level of the stress hormone cortisol. If you spend three hours doing moderate gardening, you can skip your daily gym session. What a wonderful trade-off while taking time to smell the roses, literally and figuratively. Allowing yourself to take a break from life and play in the dirt is giving permission to care for yourself. Looking at the world with the eyes of a child lightens our stress load and makes us laugh. This is all food for your soul and a move toward better health. If you eat home-grown vegetables, it’s likely your dietary habits will change for the better. This is a positive choice over the growing

number of fad diets that are moving us away from whole foods and causing nutritional deficiencies. There have even been studies suggesting that gardening reduces the risk of dementia by 36%. Gardeners report better moods after planting. According to the website sojourngreatdays.com: “. . . there is no more tangible measure of one’s power to cause positive change in the world than to nurture a plant from seed to fruit-bearing.”

DR . ANNA AVALIANI BESPOKE LIPS FOR A PERSON OF EVERY AGE BY A TRUE FILLER ARTIST By Frances Gormley

study in Manchester, England, showed that when a man looks at a woman’s face he looks first at her lips, and reacts positively to lips with some fullness. I would argue that women, too, judge other women’s lips as well as men’s lips. While thin and thick eyebrows and lined and unlined eyelids have been in and out of fashion over the decades, thin lips have never been a trend. It seems the laws of style understand the laws of attraction (and kissing). Anna Avaliani, M.D., has many loyal patients from the worlds of fashion, sports, and business who trust her to make their lips gorgeous and youthful. Patients come to her chic and serene UES suite just off Park Avenue for the natural and symmetrical results that are the hallmarks of her practice. Dr. Avaliani’s artistry is supported by her medical school training, hospital internship, and specialized residency. She is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery. RealSelf named her a Top 25 Most Loved Injector in the country. Her practice is devoted to non-invasive treatments and procedures that rejuvenate, contour, re-shape, and tighten. Dr. Avaliani understands that young, middle-aged, and older women have varying ideas about ideal lips. Younger women are more likely to desire super plumpness. Middle-aged and older women prefer a more conservative fullness. When women (and men) age, lip volume decreases, sometimes alarmingly so. For older patients, Dr. Avaliani adds fullness, lifts downward corners, and eliminates wrinkling. For all patients, Dr. Avaliani can improve on Mother Nature by changing the contour and proportions of the upper and lower lips for a desired effect. Dr. Avaliani is a national master trainer for Galderma, the company that makes the Restylane family of products. She is in the top 1% of U.S. practices, earning Galderma’s prestigious Presidential Elite Award. She works with the full portfolio of Restylane and SocialLifeMagazine.com

Juvéderm products — all 10 of them. Today there is an entirely new generation of fillers. She will choose the best product for you based on your anatomy and desired result. You can be assured that Dr. Avaliani will choose the correct fillers to respect lip contour and volume. The same product does not work for both! Equally important is Dr. Avaliani’s skill, expertise, and vision. She has earned her recognition. She is also a master trainer for NovaThreads, absorbable fibers that she uses to restore an upturned smile. These threads can also smooth out vertical lip lines for someone who chooses not to have a dermal filler. Bring in a photo to show Dr. Avaliani what you would like for yourself. GREAT HAIR NEVER GETS OLD By Jacob Puck

Sonsoles Gonzalez

W

omen shouldn’t have an expiration date. That philosophy, says Sonsoles Gonzalez, was the impetus for the wildly popular Better Not Younger hair, scalp, and inner-health line geared to the 45+ set. “My passion is to empower women who know and feel like there is still a lot to get done! It’s important for everyone to understand that life doesn’t end at what has been defined as middle age,” says Gonzalez. “Despite what society thinks, women are powerful at this age, and they have an enormous amount of confidence.” Gonzalez, a veteran of Procter and Gamble and L’Oréal, and one of the masterminds behind big name commercial brands like Pantene and Herbal Essences, knows something about hair and scalp . . . and the ways that age impacts their health. “When I retired, I started to realize that there simply weren’t any great hair products for people my age,” says Gonzalez, who is 54. She explains that many are not aware of changes in the body chemistry that impact hair density. More troubling, she says, there are surprisingly few national brands that are formulated to respond to these changes. “I kind of always joked when I reviewed product briefs targeting women 18 to 44: What’s happening with women over 45? The reality is that hair changes a lot, but the brands never addressed it,” she says. As women age, hair follicles shrink and the body produces less sebum, which makes hair drier and thinner. On top of that, women are getting the greys, coloring, and doing other processing that impacts the quality of hair and scalp. “It’s a perfect storm for the hair,” she says.

So, she got to thinking about formulations and branding. “One of the things that was important to me was to ensure that the brand wasn’t about turning back time, but rather celebrating women my age. Most brands only speak to millennials,” she says. “Brands that do speak to older women focus on gardening, or cruise ships, or spending time with their grandchildren.” With that, Better Not Younger was born, and Gonzalez began to change the narrative in the industry, the one that suggested that youth was the only standard of beauty. Better Not Younger, which launched in March as a premium brand, is a collection of treatments designed to respond to a specific age-related hair or scalp concern. They are formulated to handle strands that are fine, fragile, frizzy and chemically-treated, and a dehydrated scalp with diminished follicles. Better Not Younger’s haircare products are packed with essential oils and ceramides, and its Significant Other Hair Fortifying supplements are loaded with biotin, folic acid, and vitamins A, B6, B12, C, and D3 to promote healthy hair growth. “The line is doing exceptionally well,” says Gonzalez, who gives kudos to Matt Kandela and Blake Enting from the New York agency Dear Future for helping articulate the brand’s positioning. “It’s proof that we are still out there, we are having fun, and we want something other than what’s traditionally been offered.”

SUMMER WELLNESS IN THE HAMPTONS

S

ummer in the Hamptons is an ideal time to realize new wellness rituals. The peaceful beauty of nature sets the environment. The slow pace grants time to connect with oneself. On offer is a wide array of both products and places to foster your new wellness practices. Begin the day with a meditative walk on an ocean beach. Protect your skin with just a light layer of Josh Rosebrook SPF nutrient day cream from the boutique at Erika Bloom Pilates (Water Mill and East Hampton). When you return, head to Mandala to begin or deepen your yoga practice. Daily classes focus on breath, centering, and alignment (Amagansett). When you can, steal some time outside in the shade to journal. Daily journaling provides calm, clarity, intention, and gratitude. Turpan sells beautiful writing utensils among its home goods offerings (East Hampton). Have a light lunch with friends and keep your cell phone put away. Then follow lunch with a private Pilates session at Erika Bloom Pilates. Experience full-body toning, aligning body work, and a deepened connection to the self all in one hour (Water Mill and East Hampton). While you’re there, hit the boutique to grab some Surfpaste, a strong, but non-toxic and clean, sunscreen and head back to the beach for an afternoon dip. Connecting to the ocean by submerging yourself in the water is healing and invigorating.

Before dinner, show yourself gratitude with a luxurious oxygen facial at Onda. Take the time to find quiet and selfreflection and leave with glowing, healthy skin. Shop the store on your way out for facial care products to continue the ritual at home. Kristina Holey + Marie Veronique Micronutrient and Hydromask is a beautiful way to provide nutrients and hydration and it can be used as a mask or left on overnight (Sag Harbor). An early dinner allows the body time to digest before bed. Eat healthy, local, naturally grown vegetables from Balsam Farms (Amagansett). Eating local and in season boosts the healing properties of your food. It encourages variety and rotation in what you eat, and the vegetables are picked fresh and ripe from the soil, which can mean a greater density of nutrients. Prepare for bed with a detoxifying and exfoliating ritual. Begin by dry brushing with the Joanna Vargas dry brush. Then rinse in the shower to remove dead skin cells. Finish by soaking in a bath with Pursoma Minerals de Mer (all from Lotions and Potions at Malia Mills, Southampton). Bring on sleep with Nue Co Sleep Drops and Magnesium Ease from Free People Movement (Montauk). Erika Bloom Pilates @erikabloompilates erikabloompilates.com Social Life

DR . DAVID SHAFER DEVOTED TO CUTTING-EDGE PROCEDURES FOR WOMEN & MEN By Camden Cassidy

D

avid Shafer, M.D., of the Shafer Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, treats celebrities and highly successful professionals from all industries. After all, he participated in prestigious fellowships, trained at the Mayo Clinic, is double-board certified, teaches plastic surgery residents and fellow doctors, works closely with industry on new technology, and conducts peer reviews. Dr. Shafer is sought after by the media as a subjectmatter expert. Dr. Shafer and his staff are experts in dozens of traditional and vanguard procedures. One of the many attractive aspects of his practice is its setting. An inviting office in a skyscraper with panoramic views invites patients to linger and chat with the staff or learn about the latest treatments. “I established the practice with the goal of breaking down the traditional doctor-patient barrier to create an environment where patients feel comfortable and relaxed. This approach allows patients to openly share their face, breast, or body concerns so they can achieve their best outcomes,” he says, noting that about 50% of his patients are international and take advantage of his fly-in-program. He also provides virtual visits online for consultations and post-procedure follow-ups.” “Today’s patient is sophisticated, inquisitive, and informationseeking,” he says, emphasizing the criticality of remaining innovative and cutting-edge. Dr. Shafer, who says his inspiration originated from a love of biology and art, reports that a number of procedures are trending. For women, he says, many of the traditional procedures combined with modern technology continue to be popular, including liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelids, and facelift. However, other lifts are trending, too, including anti-aging lip lifts and Mommy-makeovers. Getting women back into shape after delivering their bundles of joy (achieving what diet and exercise can’t) he says is popular. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Dr. Shafer developed a uniquely leading-edge procedure for men, his very own S.W.A.G. — Shafer Width and Girth procedure for the penis. “It has amazing results for men and the people who love them,” he says. According to Dr. Shafer, new technology with dermal fillers has allowed a breakthrough in penis enhancement. “The same products which are FDA-approved to enhance cheeks and lips are injected into the penis shaft and glans [head] to significantly increase penis circumference and moderately increase penis length,” he says, adding that he also has innovated procedures for penile erectile dysfunction. “Studies show that penis girth is most desirable in terms of appearance and also intimate relations.” “It’s amazing the uptick in men who are taking advantage of these and other services,” says Dr. Shafer. “Gay to straight, investors to firemen. Most guys want it all, and we can help them achieve it.” David Shafer, M.D., F.A.C.S. DR . MICHELLE ZWEIFLER TELLING IT LIKE IT IS By Jacob Puck

T

he number of doctors who practice in the cosmetic surgery field is growing at a rapid pace. With all the experts to choose from, it’s tough to know what sets one apart from another. That being said, Dr. Michelle Zweifler is a standout in the field. Yes, she is often tapped by media and the medical community for her expert opinion. Dr Zweifler has published professional papers in leading scientific journals, including Annals of Plastic Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Surgical Endoscopy. She is included in Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors and Castle Connolly’s America’s Cosmetic Doctors and Dentists. While that may be enough to set her apart, there’s another element of her practice — and character — that make her unique. “I tell it like it is. I’m realistic and I’m honest,” says Dr. Zweifler. “Many procedures may appear simple, and some don’t require a week or two off, but I think it’s critical to be honest with patients about what to expect from their recovery.” So, what did Dr. Zweifler want to discuss on our most recent call? Faces! “It’s the first thing that we notice about a person, whether it’s the eyes or a smile,” she says. “We’re always looking at someone’s face, and we all want to maintain, preserve or improve upon the features that we like!”

Photography by Vital Agibalow for HANSEL

What are some of the trending procedures right now? Well, let’s start towards the top. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is very popular. At times we remove only the skin under local anesthesia. Sometimes we remove fat for contouring, and other times we reposition the fat for a softer look around the eyelid area. Where else does gravity take its toll? Definitely our cheeks. Whether it’s creases near our mouth or more obvious jowls that make us less defined, these can be corrected by a facelift. Fillers and fat grafting can help complement the lifting and repositioning, as well as enhancing volume. A lot of doctors are promoting facelifts for anyone at any age, sometimes as a preventive measure. What are your thoughts on this? Well, if you don’t need anything done, then you are too young for a facelift! However, early surgery with patients that have good skin quality tends to have more natural and longer lasting results! SocialLifeMagazine.com

When should people start thinking seriously about getting some work done? I think one of the things that bothers people a lot are the jowls, the extra sagging skin. Fillers can improve it to a certain degree, but for some patients there comes a point when fillers help but they want something more lasting. What do you think is an unreal expectation when it comes to treatments? A lot of doctors promote no or limited downtime. There is always some downtime! People need to have realistic expectations, and I’m always honest about what a patient can expect after surgery. For instance, you can’t go back to the gym three days after a facelift. Maybe with fillers or fat grafting, but any surgery will prevent you from heading from the doctor’s office to the beach. Most people want to look natural, but most people don’t realize the skill it takes for a plastic surgeon to achieve natural results. I promote naturallooking results and deliver natural-looking results. Dr. Michelle Zweifler drmichellezweifler.com 800-A Fifth Avenue, Suite 302 212.355.0500

HOW TO KEEP THE SUMMER BALL ROLLING By Stacey Griffith Founding instructor of Soul Cycle, Best-Selling Author and Podcast Co-Host of THE WAY

L

et’s be honest: Summer is most likely everyone’s favorite season, and, frankly, you look and feel your best from June through September. I happen to be slightly jaded as a transplant Californian when it comes to summers in NYC . . . because they actually end. When you are a resident of any coastal West Coast city, summer is never really over; the days just cool off a little come November. There are no heavy jackets to bring up from a basement, no gloves, no chunky cable-knit sweaters. There’s no need for a monster closet in Los Angeles unless your last name begins with K. I never imagined a day when I’d have to send a rolling-rack of jackets to The Real Real because I had accumulated too many over the past decade because of the global warming crisis, aka the coldest %$#&^*# winters in Manhattan’s history. I’m already bracing for my seasonal depression. Let’s talk about it. Hanging on to summer as long as we can should be our goal here, together, all of us. Let’s make sure we take advantage of every second we can up until Thanksgiving. I am begging all of you to ignore the No White Pants After Labor Day rule. It’s not 1950, and we do not live by the rules of archaic commercialism precepts, so we can start there. When you come to the Hamptons after Labor Day, promise me you will carry the spirit of the summer into your lives by buying every single sale item of clothing that is associated with the Hamptons, for it will make you happy when you wear it wherever you go. SoulCycle has Hamptons-related swag like no other, so be sure to drop into the Barn location on Butter Lane in Bridgehampton before you leave town. Let’s not forget our local farmers. We keep their businesses thriving by eating their delicious veggies, fruit, and in some cases their wild caught fish, so make sure you load up the car with everything you can squeeze onto your Escalade dashboard. Fruit and veggies when in season are superfood for your body. Best you get them into your system before the summer crops are depleted. Make sure to stop by one last time to your favorite Hamptons restaurants, shops, car wash, flower guy, manicurist, hair salon, and give them a little something to say thanks for a bitchin’ summer. Many of the people who work out here are seriously wiped when the summer crowd leaves, and that little SocialLifeMagazine.com

sliver of appreciation to them does not go unnoticed. I plan on squeaking out every last bit of summer by teaching out here on weekends if I can until the Barn doors close in mid-November! Happy summer 2019, everyone!

SHE GASPED WHEN SHE LEARNED THAT HER OWN FAT IS A RICH SOURCE OF STEM CELLS! By Stephen Roman, M.D. Founder, RegeneSpine, Regenerative Spine & Joint Institute

“What?! My own fat contains stem cells??!! I had NO IDEA . . .” words of a patient

That’s right! Liposuction is no longer just a cosmetic procedure, you can look better and feel better too! We all want to lose fat, but as we age, our metabolism may prevent us from getting that ideal look we want. In addition, sometimes a pesky joint pain can take us out of commission, preventing us from working out. You Can Have A Cosmetic Liposculpting Procedure at the Same Time as A Regenerative Joint Procedure! I am a board-certified expert in regenerative medicine and have been practicing for over 15 years. We developed the RegeneSculpt technique after patients repeatedly asked if we could do a cosmetic

liposuction procedure AT THE SAME time as their regenerative joint procedure. Talk about the ultimate win/win! One visit to help you feel sexier, more attractive, and more confident, while at the same time, helping you gain the mobility to get back to golf or tennis and to actively play with your kids or grand kids! Your friends will ask, “How do you do it?”

You can LOOK better and FEEL better after one procedure! A question I am often asked is, “What are the advantages of getting a regenerative or cellular joint treatment, instead of an old-fashioned steroid injection?” I’d like to invite you to a webinar that I’ve put together to answer this question. To view this informative video, please visit: Hamptons.RegeneSculpt.com. Take action now! You can even watch this brief 10-minute, but potentially life-changing video at the beach! YOUR FAT CONTAINS VERY VALUABLE CELLS, don’t waste them! You can utilize the innate healing ability of your own cells to treat your joints and put you on the path to a more active lifestyle.

TOP TIPS FOR TRAVELING By Kristy Rao

A

s a nutritionist, my job is to help my clients maintain healthy lifestyles, even while traveling. Together we make a solid plan, so that they won’t steer too far off course. Whether you’re staying with friends or at a hotel, below are my top tips for traveling:

1

Think ahead and avoid airline food. Bring a big salad with chicken to eat on the plane. Pack healthy snacks such as organic trail mix (raw cashew nuts, goji berries and cacao nibs) and hard boiled eggs. Plan B is to fast during your flight. Timerestricted eating has a slew of health benefits.

2

Remember your vitamins: vitamin C and/or a multivitamin to prevent getting sick. Probiotics are insurance for traveler’s belly. Take melatonin (and an eye mask) on international flights to align with your destination’s bedtime. This plus fasting prevents jet lag.

3 4

Call ahead to request that the hotel remove all food except fruit from your room. Avoid temptation . . . and over-pricing.

Don’t be afraid to customize a menu. Opt for a plain vegetable omelet. Ask for berries and honey to top plain yogurt. Opt for a lean protein and ask for steamed vegetables on the side when ordering dinner. Discover farm-to-table restaurants. Search directly in Google, Yelp, or Trip Advisor for keywods like “grassfed” or “gluten-free” along with “restaurant” and the name of the city you’re visiting. My favorite one in the Hamptons is Babette’s in East Hampton.

7

If your hotel doesn’t have a gym, perhaps they give access to one. The Mill House Inn in East Hampton will give any of their guests a day pass. They also have bikes on the premises. Remember your sneakers and workout clothes.

Your hotel may also offer a yoga class, so be sure to request the schedule in advance. Some studios even offer newcomers a free first class. Walk often. You will discover new things and offset any moderate indulgences. Pack a travel-sized blender and some packets of your favorite protein powder. I recommend plant-based ones such as Standard Process or Sunwarrior.

It’s easiest if you pick a hotel with healthy options. My pick in the Hamptons is definitely the Mill House Inn: toxic-free products, ionized alkaline reverse osmosis water, and plenty of healthy breakfast options. They even have oat milk! That being said, vacation is not a good time for weight loss. Instead, make maintenance your goal. And, enjoy! Social Life

Google health food stores in the area. Stock up on nondairy milk, water, fruit, precut veggies, hummus, raw unsalted nuts, and plain Greek yogurt or a coconut-based one such as CocoYo. Pick up some green juice, smoothies, and some healthy meals to keep in the fridge. Keep a healthy treat on hand to resist desserts. I recommend Hu Kitchen chocolate bar and hunks (especially the cashews + vanilla bean). Have a few pieces and keep it at that.

THE ART OF ACHIEVING WELLNESS . . . OR JUST TURNING HEADS By Jacob Puck

D

r. Anthony Maffei and his team at Advanced Surgeons in Westchester have perfected what, for many people, may have been the ultimate pipe dreams: losing significant weight, safely; getting rid of stubborn residual fat and exposing elusive abs; and, through managed programs, optimizing hormones for full body and mind wellness. Social Life wanted to know more about the core of Advanced Surgeons’ practice, and recently spoke to Dr. Maffei about his various wellness approaches and what motivates his work. What drives the passion for your practice? Quite simply, the procedures I espouse literally made me a healthier person. I first became interested in age-management medicine as an avenue to improve my own health and wellbeing. After starting the program — which included hormone optimization in conjunction with an evidence-based nutrition and exercise program — I dropped from 33 percent to 13 percent body fat while still being able to put on lean muscle mass. I also lowered my cholesterol and diabetes risk profile. A lot of doctors provide hormone treatment therapy. What makes yours different? We practice what we call hormone optimization, which goes well beyond mere therapy. We offer a comprehensive, scientific approach to mitigate the effects of aging by providing a personalized diet/exercise/hormone plan to make you feel young again on many levels: improved muscle mass, sexual vitality, mental acuity, etc. It’s not just about getting to the minimally acceptable levels, it’s about finding the levels that will make you the heathiest, most vital person possible. It’s mid-summer and some Hamptonites would love to get rid of that last bit of stubborn fat to really make their abs pop. What’s the deal with ab-etching? Ab-etching takes body contouring to a whole new level. You’re literally in my office one day and turning heads the next. What makes it different is that SmartLipo goes further to tighten the skin: it’s like shrink wrapping the ab creases. Does this contouring work on other problem areas? Yes, SmartLipo can also remove love handles, bat wings, muffin tops, saddlebags, and jowls that don’t respond to exercise and diet. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Dr. Anthony Maffei

And for those who need a little more attention? There are more significant weight-loss strategies, and my team are pioneers in the field of weight-loss surgery. Our most popular procedure right now is sleeve gastrectomy, which can shrink the stomach from the size of a football to that of a banana. It’s performed through key-hole sized incisions and takes roughly 90 minutes, resulting in less pain and quicker recovery. Most important, it improves quality of life, helps put diabetes into remission, and prolongs lives. Anthony Maffei, M.D., F.A.C.S. Advanced Surgeons Westchester nygetfit.com 914.347.0162

CHARLOTTE McKINNEY WHEN THE STARS ARE ALIGNED By Sarita Logan Photography By Dennis Leupold

The actress and model Charlotte McKinney, who is the host of this year’s St. Barth Hamptons event, belongs to a new breed of superstar. Coming of age in the era of social media and reality TV, she is among a generation known for their chameleonic ability to adapt and reinvent to remain relevant and cutting-edge. The truth is, not many of her ilk have the wherewithal to transform that initial brush with stardom into a sustainable yet flexible career. McKinney is indeed the exception. With a number of TV and film projects about to pop (mum’s the word for now on those, says McKinney), she is on the precipice of mega stardom. “I really think there are a number of attributes that play into success, and this is a profession that I love and take very seriously,” she says. “It all boils down to keeping yourself healthy, at the top of your game, and understanding which projects are perfect for where you are now, and where you want to be.” For those not in the know, here’s a quick 411 on the varied career of McKinney. McKinney initially became “Insta-famous” when she adroitly leveraged Instagram to grow a budding modeling career in her late teens, a strategy that worked

SocialLifeMagazine.com

to her advantage and led to some high-profile gigs for Guess. She is currently signed with One Model Management. In perhaps her most outrageous project, McKinney was the featured model in Carl’s Jr. All-Natural Burger commercial released during Super Bowl XLIX. The ad, which quickly went viral, shows McKinney seemingly nude, but it eventually reveals McKinney in a bikini eating the All-Natural Burger. The success of the commercial led to McKinney being dubbed “the next Kate Upton,” who also garnered national attention for appearing in a Carl’s Jr. commercial during a Super Bowl. The instant notice led to gigs on Dancing with the Stars and in films such as Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, Baywatch, and the remake of Flatliners. While McKinney says that none of those projects are the true definition of success, she looks back on them fondly and recalls that each, in some way, has prepared her for the next chapter of her professional life. Meanwhile, she says, her focus is always on wellness and doing good for herself and others. As McKinney prepares for a high-profile visit to the Hamptons, Social Life Magazine wanted our readers to know more about what drives and inspires this budding ingénue.

So, Charlotte, you’re a native of Florida and you live in California. Obviously you were born for the beach and summer! Absolutely, and that’s one of the reasons why I love the Hamptons and Social Life Magazine. The focus on summer health and wellness and, of course, fashion and the beach, are all my favorite things! Do you have a specific connection to the Hamptons? Mostly that I simply love it! Obviously, I’m a visitor like so many people, but it’s just a great destination. I love the history, the downto-earth classiness of it, the nautical aspects. I just love spending time here. Beach days, enjoying wine with friends . . . what’s not to love? Most of your time is spent in California cultivating your career. Do you spend a lot of time in L.A.? That’s so easy. I’m not much of a city person, so any time I can drop everything and go to the beach, I am all for it! Even in L.A., I live in Malibu, which is where you can find me hiding out most of the time. What does a perfect day at the beach look like for you? A perfect day at the beach obviously starts with good weather. Good friends, a little wine spritzer, some good tunes, lots of sunscreen, and just relaxing. One of the things you’re known for is your commitment to health and wellness. Tell us more. Summer is of course difficult, because I am travelling a lot and it can be challenging to maintain a routine that makes sense for me. So what I normally do is opt for fresh fish and lots of veggies and salads — so easy to find in the Hamptons, which is another reason why I love it Out East. What is your preferred workout? I love working out! For me it’s physical and mental, and the best way to start my day. I mix up my workouts to keep it interesting. My go-to’s are Barry’s Bootcamp and then yoga and barre classes at Alo Studios. Alo has a few beautiful spaces in LA but also in NY in Soho. It’s perfect for when you want to work out with friends; you can shop (they have the best workout gear I’ve ever worn), plus the best coffee shops, and it’s all in one. Their classes are awesome and I’ve never had a bad instructor! Any big trips planned for this summer? I’m actually headed off to London, Positano, and Capri in early August, which I am so thrilled about. Get some work done in London then relax in Italy. I went to Capri for the first time last year and totally fell in love with it.

So, we understand that you have some big projects about to pop. Any chance you’ll give us a little preview? Well, you know I can’t say much! We’ll take anything we can get! I have to play by the rules, but I’ve filmed some cool movies so far this year that I’m excited for. I recently spent some time in Fiji filming the remake of Fantasy Island. Fair enough — so, this is a big shift in your career. Where do you see yourself as an actress/model in two years? Right now my main focus is really in the acting space, doing as many auditions as possible that fit my passion, one of which is comedy. I think modeling will always be a part of my life, but acting is much more meaningful and what feeds my soul right now. We live in such a different, kinda crazy world, but I do love the ability to laugh and poke fun at things. Not taking anything too seriously really is the name of the game right now. So, let’s talk secrets. You’re still young, but what do you think is your fountain of youth? I’m a big beauty junkie. I love trying all the new products and facials, and finding what works best for me. I’ve been seeing Dr. Jason Diamond in Beverly Hills for a while now and his blood facial has been a massive game changer for me. Growing up in the sun, I actually have a lot of sun damage, and he and his staff have amazing treatments for rejuvenation. For skincare products, nothing works better for me than Dr. Barbara Sturm and Kate Somerville (Kate’s sunscreen mist is the best for summer!) It’s the middle of summer in the Hamptons. As someone who is focused on wellness, what is your advice to people in terms of sun care? I have melanoma on both sides of my family, and I am covered in freckles. So, I definitely advise smart sunning. Use SPF, use umbrellas, wear a hat — it’s really important! And, then, staying up on it by checking in with your dermatologist is so important. What feeds your soul from a philanthropy standpoint? Best Buddies. It’s near and dear to my heart, and gives me purpose in life and centers me. Being a buddy to someone who has a developmental disability gives me a good feeling at the end of the day, and helps me step out of my day-to-day life in a very good way. I’ve been working with the organization since high school. If you don’t know much about the program, go read more about it at bestbuddies.com and you will want to get involved. Trust me! Southampton Arts Center (SAC) is relatively new in Southampton. Can you please tell our readers a little about the history of the center? Southampton Arts Center was incorporated in 2013 and born out of the Parrish Art Museum’s move to Water Mill. It was founded by a group of civic-minded philanthropists, led by our founding co-chairs, Simone Levinson and J. Whitney Stevens, in partnership with the Village of Southampton and then mayor Mark Epley. Our founders felt strongly that a thriving cultural district, anchored by SAC in the heart of Southampton Village, was critical for quality of life and as a yearround economic driver for our community. What is the mission of Southampton Arts Center? SAC’s mission is to serve our East End community as a hub for the arts and culture while preserving, animating, and activating the iconic building and grounds at 25 Jobs Lane for future generations.

We have talks planned for Thursday nights, including one about your old pal, the great Bill Cunningham. This event will take place on Thursday, August 1. Sunday nights are documentary film nights. And in August we will be launching a new theatre and opera series, where we will be presenting readings of new works in development. BIG LITTLE LIES, NICOLE KIDMAN, OPRAH, MISS PORTER’S @ 175, LINCOLN CENTER @ 60, CARDI B & THE LAST JEW OF BOYLE HEIGHTS. Republic of Gilead and her two young daughters is the main focus of Season 3. Moss confided “You have to fight fire with fire. That’s become June’s journey in Season 3. To fight against certain people, she has to become more like them.”

Stranger Things: Season 3

Your favorite kids are back and I’m not talking about HBO’s provocative new hit Euphoria that features more sex, drugs, and nudity, both full-frontal male and female, than Playboy and Playgirl. I’m talking about the Netflix sci-fi thriller Stranger Things, and if you haven’t watched it, you better start right now! Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, and Caleb McLaughlin are back for an even more exhilarating season. Millie, who plays Eleven, said that this season is not only “definitely unexpected,” but is also “very, very scary.” She added, “I was actually scared, which is hard for me because I love scary things. But I was like ‘whoa, this is gruesome.’ ” Brace yourselves! If you already binged-watched Season 3, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Everyone under 35 is already talking about Season 4, which is most likely going to be the last season for Stranger Things, but what I can tell you is that it is going to be very, very different from this season.

The Handmaid’s Tale: Season 3

If you’re still trying to recover from the shocking ending of Season 2, brace yourselves. The Handmaid’s Tale is back on Hulu. Season 3 is already serving up frightening political narratives that move the story forward into a terrifying future. Hopefully, you’re done watching HBO’s bloodcurdling and depressing hit Chernobyl, because everyone’s favorite TV show, Big Little Lies, is back for Season 2. If you need a recap, head to HBO’s Instagram. The premium network cleverly posted a video with everything you need to know or remember from the first season. Based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, the show stars awardwinning actresses, including Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, and Laura Dern. The unmissable dark, comedic drama is still delving into lies, friendships, parenting, and marriage. Meryl Streep joined the cast playing Mary Louise, the mother of the murdered Perry, played by Alexander Skarsgard. About her role, Streep confessed: “We imagine that not only our children’s problems, but everything in the world, is our fault. I think it’s sort of a more complicated landscape than that, and this piece enters into that very bravely.”

Deep State: Season 2

Epix. Justified and Sons of Anarchy star Walton Goggins portrays a former CIA agent, Nathan Miller, who is currently a private-sector fixer for the deep state in West Africa. Deep State depicts real news stories, as Goggins recalled: “Filming this show is one of those experiences where you are kind of participating in current events as they happen.” One of the story strands you get into this season is precisely that: building a secret military base in the Sahara. Matthew Parkhill, who created the show said, “I wondered if I should inform the CIA about the filming on the Sahara’s border, so the TV crew would not be confused for real military personnel. We were driving around with huge machine guns,” he quipped.

The Last Jew of Boyle Heights

@ Polo Hamptons

Experienced television, film, and stage actor Steven Greenstein is extremely passionate about his new off-Broadway show The Last Jew of Boyle Heights. The play’s script, which Greenstein wrote, is so ingrained in him he could perform it anytime anywhere. Steven handles all aspects of the play, from production to the cast, which allowed him to get to know the eight actors in his play, including Jeffrey Farber, Eliud Kauffman, Silvia Dionisio, Marco Torriani, Fancisca Muñoz, Michael Quinlan, Robert Ierardi, and Ann Flanigan Steinberg. One of his original actresses had her visa extension denied by the U.S. government, giving him no option but to find

someone to assume her role. The Last Jew of Boyle Heights tells the story that reflects the current social and political problems of many countries around the world dealing with immigration, deportation, fear-mongering, and prejudice. The play provides an authentic discussion about these topics. Catch the play every Thursday (at 8 p.m.) and Sunday (at 7:30 p.m.) at The Actors Temple Theatre. thelastjewofboyleheights.com

C’EST VRAI! ROSÉ IS HERE TO STAY! THIS WINE IS MUSIC FOR YOUR MOUTH “Je vois la vie en rose.” | “I see life in pink.” EDITH PIAF Rosé wine is synonymous with summer. And despite the fact that Jay McInerney, a wine aficionado and the author of Bright Lights Big City, claims he’s printing “No Way Rosé” shirts this summer, rosé ain’t goin’ away. At least not in the Hamptons, Just check out the multitudes of pink bottles lining the shelves of East End liquor stores. Chris Boudouris, the owner of McNamara Liquors in Bridgehampton, told me, “Every summer is a good summer for rosé in the Hamptons.” But beyond the ubiquitous bottles of Domaine Ott and Whispering Angel, there’s a unique new rosé.

CHATEAU AUGUSTE 2017 Why so special? Instead of insecticides, this Bordeaux vineyard plays music to keep insects away (Huh?) What’s more, with no chemicals or pesticides, “It’s completely organic and vegan,” says Jacques Azoulay, the owner and CEO of Gabriella Wines. The secret weapon: Genodics, the science that uses sound waves to penetrate the plants’ cells, stimulating growth and natural resistance to disease and pests. The vintners Damien Landouar and Hubert de Bouard have installed speakers throughout their 74-acre vineyard to play tunes to the grapevines! Classical music, no less. (I might’ve gone with PJ Harvey’s “Grow Grow Grow” or Jimmy Buffet’s “Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé.”) The serenaded Chateau Auguste is also quite versatile as it complements seafood, salads, lamb, risotto, and, according to Azoulay, “pairs really well with summer.” (Summer . . . yes, but I’ll no doubt be having it all year.) Now’s the time for me to come clean about my wine knowledge: it’s nonexistent! I don’t know a lick about pink wines. So, if like me, you’re rosé ignorant, here’s a quickie primer.

aRosé is believed to be oldest type of wine, dating back to ancient Greece. aSince 2000, rosé sales have grown by 25 percent; more than any other beverage. “It is growing at a rate unheard of in other categories,” according to Nielson ratings. aIt has more antioxidants (like resveratrol, which protects against cancer) than white wine. aRosé contains potassium, which is important for metabolism. aA 5-ounce glass of rosé contains roughly 82 calories, making it one of the lowest calorie alcohols. aThe health benefits of rosé are similar to those of red wine. According to the Annals of Internal Medicine, a rosé a day can decrease blood sugar levels, fight inflammation, increase good HDL cholesterol, help lower blood pressure, and fight belly fat. (A rosé a day fights belly fat??? Start pouring! Immediately!) Want to try Chateau Auguste 2017? Head over to the Walk ’n Rosé beach cleanup on July 20 at Long Beach in Sag Harbor, where volunteers will be picking up plastic debris, “cleaning our shore, one sip at a time, quips walknrose.com” Afterward there’ll be a toast at Les Bilboquet. Who knows, while enjoying your melodiously manufactured Chateau Auguste rosé, you may even discern a note of Beethoven, Bach, or Brahms. Social Life

RACHEL’S RADAR MY FAVORITE ARTISTS By Rachel Heller

George Condo My all-time favorite artist! I first discovered my love for art in London over 10 years ago when I went to Art Frieze. I received an art education from the works of the many artists in the show. I really enjoyed a lecture about George Condo. I began to follow his gallery shows, and before I knew it, he was included in museum exhibitions. Condo’s art for me represents a complexity of thought that language can’t express, but is wonderfully expressed on his canvases, which convey his deep thoughts and emotions. I love how his imagery is recognizable yet differs in color schemes from collection to collection.

Nick Moss Emoji artist to say the least, Moss is a wizard with welding steel pieces cut from from sheets of metal. Moss’s journey to art followed a non-traditional path; he was previously a highly successful entrepreneur. He seems to be onto something by realizing that emoji art, which he compares to hieroglyphics, is symbolic of a movement. Emojis represent feelings but do not replace emotions. Moss demonstrates this with his personal artistic take on the emoji. The emoji art he creates looks like they were dug up in an excavation, yet have a cool Pop Art look. His art depicts the modern generation yet is not newlooking. Millennials and post-millenials have lost the art of conversation. There is a place for emojis in communication, but should not predominate as a means of expression. Hopefully Moss’s art will remind us of that.

Joan Miró Miró frequently criticized what he considered bourgeois painting. He was eager to leap into modernity with new imagery and new techniques. He wanted to be unique, which he managed to do. He not only created great mobiles but also great works on canvas. His surrealist art at times make you feel he foreshadowed the modern society. He was ahead of his time as an artist and a true connoisseur of his time.

Pablo Picasso Born in Malaga, Spain, Picasso was not only an artist but also, unbeknown to some, a poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. His most famous work, Guernica, decried the Nazis’ bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. This large painting is also one of the world’s most famous and moving antiwar statements. Picasso painted his wives and lovers, and I love that when he broke up with one of his lady interests he sometimes painted over the canvas.

Georges Braque Braque grew up in Le Havre, a major port in northern France’s Normandy region. He was a Fauve artist before famously developing Cubism along with Picasso. This avant-garde style of painting, collage, and sculpture inspired new directions in music, which Braque referenced with the many instruments depicted in his work. Nick Moss

t’s all in the family with the Duffy Group at Nest Seekers International in the Hamptons. Caryn and John Duffy bring a unique combination of qualities and competencies to each and every real estate transaction they handle. The couple first met in Huntington, New York, and married in their twenties. Their jobs relocated them to the West Coast twice, once to southern California in 2000 and more recently to Palo Alto, Ca in 2007. After spending countless weekends and vacations in the Hamptons for over two decades with their two sons, they are now full-time residents of East Hampton. The couple sells luxury and commercial real estate and they have become quite the powerhouse team Out East.

CARYN

JOHN

KALISKY-DUFFY Caryn was born in Far Rockaway, and raised on the Gold Coast of Long Island. Caryn’s parents were born and raised in Brooklyn where Caryn spent much of her childhood visiting her grandparents. Her grandfather owned a wholesale paper and twine business on Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg for over 40 years. While growing up, Caryn always heard her great-aunt Judith tell stories about the wonders of buying and selling real estate. Judith was one of the largest owners of real estate in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She primarily owned commercial buildings that she leased out to business owners on long-term leases. Judith was a savvy businesswoman who taught Caryn the importance of being informed, fair, and an overall good human being in all real estate business dealings. Earlier in her career Caryn spent over 20-years in education as an inclusion advocacy and curriculum modification specialist, and after that ventured into the world of tech by becoming a contract worker for Google. Always having a passion for real estate, Caryn decided to make it her full-time career. Licensed Real Estate Salesperson carynd@nestseekers.com c/ 631.793.1685 SocialLifeMagazine.com

DUFFY After completing his undergraduate and graduate studies in finance, John started his career on Wall Street at a major brokerage firm. John was then recruited to be part of the executive team of the largest cell phone (mobile handset) distributor in North America with annual sales of $2.7 billion. John was responsible for the acquisition and management of more than $200 million in inventory. He was the lead member of the vendor and sales team negotiating with international and domestic manufacturers and wireless carriers. In 2007, the company was acquired by a Silicon Valley firm and he and his family were relocated to sunny Palo Alto, California. He has worked alongside and developed relationships with many high-tech and aerospace professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2014 he joined the top producing real estate team at Berkshire Hathaway in Silicon Valley. Licensed Real Estate Salesperson in New York and California johnd@nestseekers.com c/ 516.361.1794

HAMPTONS TOP POWER BROKERS: CORCORAN’S GARY DePERSIA By Blaire Bass

F

rom Southampton to Montauk and from Sagaponack to Shelter Island, Gary DePersia has participated in nearly $3 billion of real estate transactions since 1995. With hundreds of his exclusive listings sold and closed, as well as matching hundreds of his own buyers and renters with the right properties, Gary’s nearly 25 years in Hamptons luxury real estate has generated benchmark sales. You may have heard people refer to him in real estate circles as the “go-to man.” A year-on-year member of The Corcoran Group President’s Council, he qualified as a national standout in 2008 when he was ranked as the nation’s 4th top broker. And just this spring, the Real Deal recognized him as the 3rd ranked broker in the Hamptons with $83M+ in residential sales of $10M+ properties. Gary realized early on the importance of deep local knowledge and the benefits of expert marketing, which other brokers have come to emulate. Knowing each buyer or renter has a personal idea of what defines the best Hamptons experience, Gary is well versed on the inventory of each village and hamlet on the East End.

And they have. The Bodenchaks have sold over 40 pieces of land or tear-down houses over the past few years — many under the radar — and have helped developers, builders, and end-users turn $1M to $7M parcels into $5M to $20M special properties, often achieving record prices on resale. “Most recently, we helped contribute to the land development and design inspiration for this year’s “Holiday House,” a spectacular designer showhouse at 90 Wild Goose Lane in Water Mill South. StayMarquis SEAMLESS FIVE STAR HAMPTONS RENTALS By Tessa Smith as enjoyable as possible and offer a range of concierge services, including grocery shopping, running errands, pet care, babysitting, personal shopping, chauffeur service, kitchen help, surfing lessons, personal training, in-home massage, personal chef, restaurant reservations and beach set up. We also offer guests the ability to book excursions, including a boat tour around the Hamptons and/or North Fork, a wine tour, and yoga retreats.

Why did you create StayMarquis? In 2009 we booked a vacation home for a long weekend in the Hamptons with a group of friends. We found the listing through Craigslist. com, which displayed a picturesque Hamptons home, complete with high hedges lining the property, a 20x40 in-ground pool, a salt-washed shingle exterior with perfectly manicured grounds as well as a modern and clean interior that could comfortably accommodate 12 people. When we arrived at the property, there were no hedges, no pool, and the structure that laid on the property resembled something found in a war-torn village. With our hearts already at our knees, they fell a little further when the “owners” phone number was no longer in service. We got taken, and we vowed to never let that happen to anyone ever again. We saw an opportunity to build a company that would be an industry game-changer, bringing a new level professionalism and quality to an industry that was frought with problems and run by individuals lacking the skills and experience needed to ensure property owners and guests had a hassle-free and streamlined experience. Why can renters trust your brand? We take great pride in the properties that we represent. Every property on our platform has been visited by a member of our team and has passed an annual 100-point inspection process. For properties that are part of our “Marquis” program, we handle all on-the-ground services, and our team visits the property a minimum of 4 times for each booking: 1. 24 hours in advance of check-in to ensure the property is “guest-ready”; 2. At the time of check-in; 3. After the guest departs for a thorough post-stay cleaning; and 4. An inspection at the end of the guest’s stay. These 4 touch points per booking ensure that the property is always prepared and ready for the guest to enjoy. Tell me about your concierge services and what you offer? We have a dedicated concierge team that is solely focused on guest experience. We take it upon ourselves to make each guests vacation SocialLifeMagazine.com

What makes StayMarquis unlike any other? There is a two-pronged response to this question, one focusing on how we’re different in the eyes of an owner, and the other in the eyes of the guest. From owner’s perspective: Our approach to how we market, price, and carry out our on-the-ground operations is unlike any other. Having been involved in the vacation rental industry since its infancy, we have seen, and experienced firsthand, what works and what doesn’t. We have developed our own methodologies and strategies to yield owners the highest return on their investment, while minimizing the stresses that come when renting their homes. Our vision for the industry, and our complete understanding of the differing needs of the owner and guest, allows us to bridge the gap between the two parties in a seamless fashion. From a guest’s perspective: We are a one-stop shop when it comes to renting a vacation home. Not only do we hand-hold the guest through the entirety of the search process and answer any question that they might have about a property or the neighborhood, we continue to do so throughout the entirety of their stay. Our concierge team can handle any guest request, from grocery shopping, booking a sunset sail, organizing an at-home chef, or making coveted reservations, we allow the guest to relax before they even step foot on the property. Our partnerships with local restaurants, venues, service providers and other businesses creates a hyper-localized experience that allows our guests to live in luxury, like a local. What message do you want to leave your customers with? “Exclusive yet accessible.” Since the beginning, our goal has been to offer properties of all different shapes, sizes and price points. It is extremely important to us that we have inventory for everyone, and that each of our guests feel that they are part of something special when traveling through us. We won’t rest until we perfect the vacation rental experience and we will continue to make improvements to every aspect of our business, including marketing, booking, concierge and rental management.

WEDDING HAMPTONS

ON ‘LOCATION’ WITH LESSING’S HOSPITALITY GROUP By Jacob Puck

R

egardless of whom you ask, the most important forward-thinking aspect of any good event — and especially a wedding — is the location. “Of course, no detail is trivial when you are planning an event to have maximum impact,” says Jennifer Cantin, Lessing’s Hospitality Group’s director of marketing and development. “However, the first and last impression — and everything in between — will be informed by the environment you choose.” Cantin should know. Lessing’s is a sixth-generation, family-owned company that now boasts 120 locations from Montauk to Manhattan, up to Westchester, and down to Florida; wedding and catering venues; 10 full-service restaurants; over 80 corporate and academic dining centers; nine Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza franchises; and a historic inn. “The only thing we don’t have at this point is a barn,” jokes Cantin, with the caveat that she is sure that one is on the horizon. With so many options to choose from, Social Life Magazine challenged Cantin to name her top five favorite fête locales.

1. Whitby Castle, Rye Set on 126 acres, Whitby Castle is conveniently located, yet seemingly worlds away. Perfectly manicured lawns, breathtaking views of the Long Island Sound, a grand ballroom, and two private reception rooms offer the perfect backdrop for any size affair. “There are a lot of brides who really want to have the perfect princess wedding, and this is the perfect locale,” says Cantin. “Just pulling up to a castle, regardless of the event, is a wow moment.”

2. JERUSALEM CELEBRITY CHEF’S BIRTHRIGHT By R. Couri Hay

R. Couri Hay is the travel editor and society columnist for this magazine. Couri began his career at Andy Warhol’s Interview and he wrote for Town & Country and People. Couri also appears on CNN, PBS, FOX and VH1 commenting on Hollywood. He lives in NYC and Southampton and is the CEO of his own PR firm.

HOLY & DELICIOUS When Herb Karlitz, the founder of Karlitz & Company and event-marketer extraordinaire, visited Israel in 2018, he was blown away by the food scene, and how it had changed from his first trip more than 20 years earlier. Herb confessed: “I left schnitzled out and underwhelmed by the lack of variety of the dishes. After eating the most amazing food this time around and seeing the difference the country had undergone in terms of ingredients and technique, I was convinced Israel’s food story had to be told.” Herb decided he would return and experience Israel with a few of his friends who are master chefs and gourmets. He organized this trip, which he dubbed Celebrity Chef ’s Birthright.

MY FIRST TASTE OF ISRAEL My first day in Jerusalem was filled with delicious tastes from the charming and authentic market in the Old City. I tried everything from hummus and freshly baked pita with pinches of exotic spices to heavenly sweets that were handed out freely by the owners of the different booths. After fueling up, we visited the Western Wall (a.k.a. the Wailing Wall) and toured the secret tunnels underneath. The evening concluded with a 12-course dinner at the Tower of David by the chef Ido Zarmi. “Everything was delicious,” declared Marc Murphy, the genial Chopped judge and restaurateur.

THE TOP CHEFS Food may seem an odd way to prioritize your first visit to Jerusalem, one of the world’s oldest cities, a holy place for three of the world’s major religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, and the place where Jesus was crucified. But we were in Israel for Celebrity Chef ’s Birthright, a weeklong gastronomic road

trip through Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Other foodworld luminaries on this adventure included the former New York Times restaurant critic Ruth Reichl, Chopped chef judg- Marc Murphy, Gail Simmons, Amanda Frietag and Herb Karlitz @ Celebrity Chef ’s Birthright es Amanda Freitag and Marc Murphy, the chef and culinary TV personality Andrew Zimmern, Pig & Khao’s Leah Cohen, Top Chef’s Nancy Silverton and Eden Grinshpan. Other foodies on the trip included Jenn Louis from the former Lincoln restaurant in Oregon; Naama Shefi, the founder of the Jewish Food Society; Jonathan Waxman of Barbuto’s; and Nancy Silverton of the Mozza Restaurant Group.

GOURMET EXPEDITION The first-of-its-kind gourmet expedition allowed these famous U.S. chefs and culinary influencers to experience Israel’s exciting, vibrant food scene, and to break bread with Israel’s most accomplished chefs, artisanal food producers, winemakers, and culinary tech innovators. While I was lucky enough to tag along with these foodies — and indulge in the amazing cuisine — for me, that was only one of my reasons for coming to Jerusalem. So between bites, I slipped off to do some sightseeing around this fascinating city, which teems with ancient history, but is also a lively, modern city with a red-hot tech startup sector and a happening food, hotel, and nightlife scene to keep these bright entrepreneurs entertained. King David Hotel, Jerusalem. (Below) Lobby of the King David

GETTING THERE I flew on El Al and arrived at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, which is the main international airport of Israel and the busiest airport in the country. This is a ten-and-a-half-hour trip so don’t even think of going any way but first class if you want to arrive rested and ready go out! It’s a 50-minute car ride from Ben Gurion to the iconic King David Hotel in Jerusalem, the top place to stay in the city. Alternatively, a high-speed train will get you from Ben Gurion to Yitzhak Navon Station in central Jerusalem in just over 20 minutes.

KING DAVID HOTEL I checked in to the King David Hotel, an Israeli landmark. It’s one of the world’s legendary hotels and unquestionably the most famous of all the Jerusalem hotels. My luxuriously appointed room overlooked the Old City, and you should definitely request a room with that view and a private terrace. It’s the only way, really. Built in the SocialLifeMagazine.com

1920s, the King David is elegant and welcoming, and has been host to kings, queens, heads of state — Barack Obama and Donald Trump are the two most recent U.S. presidents to have visited — and celebrities from all fields. The King David is located in the Christian Quarter, where you can follow Jesus’ final steps by walking the Via Dolorosa. The route ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built on the site where Jesus was crucified. The sights and sounds of the Old City are like no other; you can feel that this is a powerfully spiritual place, whatever your beliefs.

JERUSALEM’S OLD CITY

THE SECRET TUNNELS

Jerusalem’s walled Old City, about a third of a square mile, has four quarters: Christian, Armenian, Muslim, and Jewish, and is home to sites of religious significance to each tradition. In addition to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Old City contains the Western Wall, and the Dome of the Rock, an Islamic shrine. Amazingly, this small Old City area, dating back at least 5,000 years, constituted the entire city of Jerusalem until 1860, when the first neighborhood outside the walls was established. The Old City was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, Today, metropolitan Jerusalem has a population of more than 900,000.

It’s actually only a small section of the Western Wall that is visible above ground, but you can visit a larger portion of it underground, in a maze of tunnels dating back to the second century B.C.E. Arabs and Israelis have clashed over control of the wall, and it is a fascinating look at ancient history that is still alive and causing controversy today. Certain spaces in the tunnels are used for weddings and bar mitzvahs, and its marvels include a mikveh, or ritual bath, that was used by people working in the temple 2,000 years ago, and the Western Wall stone, the largest stone in the Middle East at 42 feet long, 11 feet high, and 14 feet deep. It is believed to be the largest object ever lifted by human beings without today’s modern machinery. Archeological excavations are ongoing, and it is expected that remains of the First Temple will be uncovered someday.

THE JEWISH QUARTER We spent the morning and early afternoon walking around the Jewish quarter, home to the Hurva Synagogue, which has been destroyed several times but was rebuilt in 2010 after its most recent destruction in 1948. Our tour guide was Yitz Applbaum, who is a senior advisor to the mayor of Jerusalem for public private partnerships.

THE WESTERN WALL We toured the Western Wall, most usually called the Wailing Wall, and perhaps the number one attraction in Jerusalem. The wall was originally erected as part of the expansion of the Second Temple started by Herod the Great c.19 B.C.E. It encases the Temple Mount, a hill that is considered holy to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The term “Wailing Wall” derives from the centuries-old practice of Jews praying at the wall and weeping over the destruction of the temples.

CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE I toured the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (also known as the Church of the Resurrection), which is one of the holiest sites in Christianity. This church is on the site where Jesus of Nazareth was crucified, which is known as Calvary or Golgotha. I also saw Jesus’ empty tomb, where he was buried and resurrected. The church contains five stations representing The Passion of Christ. After centuries of squabbling, the church is now shared by five different Christian denominations: Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Coptic, Syrian Orthodox, and Armenian. It is fascinating to watch the afternoon procession when members of all five branches proceed from the church to the tomb, each with different robes, chants, and hymns.

Jerusalem’s Western Wall

THE TRUE CROSS & THE TOMB A Greek temple originally occupied the site where the church now stands. Emperor Constantine ordered it replaced by a basilica in the fourth century. It was during these excavations that the purported True Cross and the tomb were uncovered. The plans were then redrawn to incorporate the relics, and the new basilica was consecrated as the church to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The church was later destroyed under other rulers, and then rebuilt in 1048. Social Life

TOWER OF DAVID

CRUSADER HALL

Our troop of foodies was invited for a 12-course dinner at the Tower of David, Jerusalem’s Citadel, a magnificently restored structure at the Jaffa Gate that dates back to the fifth century, when the Crusaders conquered the city and it served as the king’s palace. Melisende, the 12th century queen of Jerusalem, ruled from this place, and one local dignitary mused, “In the queen’s time there were meals served here like the one we are about to sit down to.”

The setting was spectacular, as the meal was in the Crusader Hall, a cavernous space dating from 1099. The Tower of David is now a museum that houses permanent exhibitions telling the story of Jerusalem and hosting a variety of cultural activities. The top of the tower offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the entire metropolis, both old and new. And don’t miss the daily “Night Spectacular,” an unforgettable outdoor sound and light show projected onto ancient stone walls.

CHEF IDO ZARMI Well, in all likelihood, Melisende’s meals weren’t as innovative as the one to which we were treated, a masterful flurry of dishes, such as a miniature sabich — a sandwich of eggplant, tahini, quail egg, and olive oil — a culinary revelation; shish-black with sheep milk yogurt, sumac, and sage; poached Mediterranean branzino in Al Arz tahini; and goat milk panna cotta with strawberries, rhubarb, and caramelized pine nuts. Zarmi used nine varieties of Israeli olive oil in creating the meal. Each dish was paired with a carefully selected wine, and Zarmi said that his mission as co-host of this feast for the visiting chefs was to use the best Israeli ingredients, prepared by the best-trained Israeli hands, served in the most lavish Israeli setting. The dinner ended with a dazzling display of handmade Israeli chocolates by Ika Chocolates. SocialLifeMagazine.com

LIONS’ GATE We took a tour of The Lions’ Gate, which is one of seven open gates in Jerusalem’s Old City walls. The lions embossed on both sides of the gate were derived from a dream that the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent had in which two lions were chasing him. The sultan interpreted this as a sign that the holy city needed to be protected, and ordered that Jerusalem’s ruined city walls be rebuilt. The Via Dolorosa begins at the Lions’ Gate, and on Palm Sunday, a Christian procession from the Mount of Olives enters the Old City through the gate, walking the path of Jesus. Israeli paratroopers came through this gate during the Six-Day War of 1967 and unfurled the Israeli flag.

YAD VASHEM We took a tour of Yad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Center. Another very powerful site, Yad Vashem is set on 45 acres with museums and outdoor monuments, memorial sites, gardens, sculptures, and exhibition spaces devoted to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and documenting one of the darkest chapters of human history. One highlight is a cavern with a single candle that is reflected by a series of mirrors, a tribute to the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust.

CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY IN BETHLEHEM Entering the church that marks the site of Christ’s birthplace means having to crouch low; the only doorway in the fortress-like front wall is four feet high. The Crusaders lowered the entrance around the year 1500 to prevent attackers from riding in on horseback. It is known as the “Door of Humility,” as Christians deem it appropriate to bow low before entering the place where God humbled himself to become man. One of the world’s oldest continuously operating churches, tradition holds that it sits over the cave that marks Jesus’ birthplace.

CATHEDRAL OF SAINT JAMES We took a tour of this 12th century Armenian church dedicated to two Church figures named James: James the Just, the brother of Jesus, and James the Greater, one of the Twelve Apostles. James, Jesus’ brother, is believed to be buried under the main altar in the church. He was Jewish and presided over the Council of Jerusalem, and as a leader of the church for many years, James was influential in setting doctrine for new believers in Jesus. He died a martyr in 63 A.D., thrown from the roof and stoned to death. It is also believed that James the Great’s head is also buried in the church. He was killed by Herod in 44 A.D., and the rest of his body is scattered among different burial sites.

THE MAHANE YEHUDA MARKET The Mahane Yehuda, Jerusalem’s largest market, with several hundred vendors, sells everything from fruits, vegetables, and specialty foods to some crafts, clothing, and Judaica. This market is not to be missed. A traditional Middle East souk, the market is a panoply of colors, sounds, and aromas, and one of the most enjoyable experiences of our trip. This was a big hit with our group of gourmets. The King David can arrange a Social Life

Open since 2009, the menu changes daily depending upon the market offerings that day. The Chopped judge Amanda Freitag summed up the terrific meal perfectly, saying, “Machneyuda is the most fun, delicious, energetic, dinner in Jerusalem!! What a blast! HOTEL ADLON KEMPINSKI BERLIN By Anthony Giampetruzzi

T

here was a time when Berlin, Germany, clearly had an identity crisis. After World War II, and arguably for centuries prior, what was up was down, and what was down was up. For many, still, it is regarded as a place of darkness and mystery. But curtains, iron or otherwise, have been torn open over the past three decades to reveal what is arguably the most interesting and attractive destination in Europe, one that is rooted in a positive vibe and a distinct identity: welcoming, tolerant, vibrant, beguiling, majestic, and, yes, charming. But, for all the adjectives that describe Berlin, one stands above all others: intoxicating. From the regal Reichstag to the awe-inspiring Brandenburg Gate. From the somber Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe to the joyful cafés and bars of the Kreuzburg neighborhood. From the peaceful Tiergarten to the Brutalist remnants of Communist East Berlin. And, yes, there are still fragments of that infamous wall.

Here’s a tip: Don’t even try to get an unattended grip on this vast city and its complicated history. A private walking tour — or two — is absolutely essential and money well spent. Plan this aspect of your trip in advance, and be sure to schedule it for your first day or two so you can keep a running list of the sites, attractions, museums, and monuments to which you’ll want to return. Here’s another tip: there’s no need to spend hours laboring over which five-star hotel you should choose. The Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, situated in Pariser Platz, a square at the end of Unter den Linden, has long been a bucket-list choice for luxury travelers, because it is a sensational property. It’s location notwithstanding, and we’ll get back to that, the Adlon Kempsinski drips of history and grandeur. It’s the hotel that inspired the famous 1932 film Grand Hotel. It’s the go-to lodging for royalty, heads of state, and celebrities (don’t hate us for pointing out that Michael Jackson shockingly dangled his Social Life

son Blanket from an Adlon balcony — but we digress). And, like its Paris equivalents, The Ritz and Plaza Athénée, the Adlon Kempinski shows up in numerous books, movies, and other elements of pop culture. The original Hotel Adlon was one of the most famous hotels in Europe. It opened in 1907 but was largely destroyed in 1945 in the closing days of World War II. After Berlin’s reunification in the early 1990s, the current property, which opened in 1997, is seemingly brand new, but clearly inspired by, if not modeled after, the original in all the best ways. Today, the property is demurely nestled between the British and American embassies on the Unter den Linden, the main boulevard in the central Mittedistrict. The location is ideal as nearly every major Berlin attraction is within walking distance. However, it’s what’s in your line of sight that’s important here. Splurge for a west-facing room and be completely mesmerized by the city’s most magnificent attraction: the Brandenburg Gate. These rooms offer a kaleidoscope of views, not only of the gate during various phases of light (you may find yourself awestruck when the day ends and it is brilliantly illuminated), but also of those who gather to admire, proselytize, or celebrate at this 18-century monument. Yes, experiencing all this from your room is the best! SocialLifeMagazine.com

From the moment you arrive at the Adlon Kempinski, you are swept up in the European grand hotel realm. First, the staff are mind readers, and cater to your every whim. When they usher you inside, you will be at the heart of the hotel, the Lobby Lounge & Bar. Take some time to listen to the quiet splashing of the noble elephant fountain or the soothing tinkle of the grand piano and indulge in cocktails, tasty snacks, or treats from the patisserie. All adventures begin and end at this stately juncture, constantly festooned with gorgeous flowers and other flora. You already have the information about room location, and while all are magnificent, a junior suite Brandenburg Gate is in order. Literally everything is exquisite. Ample storage, stately furnishings including plenty of space to spread out, exquisite linens, an enormous bathroom outfitted with a generous selection of Salvatore Ferragamo amenities, and a delicious selection of wines, spirits, snacks, and candies ensure that your decision to leave the room will be challenging. When you do venture out, acclimate with a visit to the Adlon Spa by Resense. Regarded as Berlin’s greatest wellness haven, the spa invites guests to enjoy soul-nourishing treatments. Go all in for one of several La Prairie facials (the Ultimate Pure Gold Radiance facial serves as welcome rejuvenation from your flight), or simply enjoy the pool and fitness center. No matter, the spa is indeed an oasis of calm and comfort.

BERLIN PRIVATE TOUR PRO TIP While there are a number of diverse restaurants and bars near the hotel, this neighborhood is second to many others in terms of variety and gastronomical appeal. Unless you choose to dine onsite, that is. For what is arguably Berlin’s best meal, book early for an unforgettable evening at the two Michelin-starred Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer (see page 145). In keeping with the cultural mosaic that is Berlin, the property’s other hot spot is Sra Bua, where the renowned chef Kai Weigand dishes up pan-Asian culinary perfection, Chinese culinary philosophy, Thai aromas, and European influences. Begin with a René (Champagne, jasmine, and pear). Don’t pass up the Greenland turbot, dressed with horseradish and black garlic. Finish your meal with a dessert of Itakuja chocolate, mango and rice — you’ll thank us. Berlin, due to its complicated history and the still-tangible remnants of its 20th-century Communist partition, can be sobering. But it is truly a must for anyone who is a student of history. Hotel Adlon Kempinski is, quite simply, also a must.

Steeped in complicated history, Berlin is a city that requires a little — OK, a lot! — of explanation. While a guide book will provide you the basics, a guide will give you and your brain a true sense of accomplishment. Our pick is Dennis Behnke, “The Berlin Storyteller.” Book Behnke’s six-hour walking tour, and pack a pair of sensible shoes for this illuminating journey through Berlin and its history. private-tour.berlin

LORENZ ADLON ESSZIMMER By Anthony Giampetruzzi Hendrik Otto

“Exciting, expressive, European-inspired cuisine.” HENDRIK OTTO

T

here was a day and age when a stay at a luxury hotel not only meant a fine room, but also the finest of dining. In fact, most of the world’s chicest restaurants were located within the grandest of hotels. While this is not always true for hotels stateside, the tradition continues across Europe. Case in point: Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer at the inimitable Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin. “Exciting, expressive, European-inspired cuisine,” is the motto of Hendrik Otto, the chef de cuisine who helms the two Michelinstarred restaurant along with the world-class maître d’ Oliver Kraft. Otto, who is inspired by the varied influences and finest traditions of European cuisine, including those of his childhood in Germany, says his passion is to “awaken emotions with his recipes.” He does so quite adroitly in the intimate dining room located on the second floor of the Adlon Kempinski. If it weren’t for the dramatic views of the Brandenberg Gate from each of the only 12 tables, you’d swear you were in the dining hall of a Bavarian castle because of the dark and dramatic moldings, lavish drapery, and other ornamentation. “We take our guests on a journey through the world of flavors, but also back to my early years. very personal element: I not only draw my inspiration from sensory impressions, but also from old recipes passed on to me by my family and friends,” recalls Otto at lorenzadlon-esszimmer.de. “Many ideas originate [on] my ten-person team who are constantly working on the further development of the dishes. Influences from all over the world continually provide even staunch regulars with new experiences and surprises — and with previously unknown adventures in flavor.” Go all in with a six-course prix fixe experience with wine pairings. Each dish is a work of art, and all borrow from local traditions and local purveyors . . . regardless of your dietary restrictions (vegetarian or vegan is no problem, but let the team know in advance). Dishes are paired with an expertly curated selection of both regional and global wines, as well as some other surprises (a delicious shim — a low-alcohol drink — with a neon green ice cube accompanied my second course). In all, this is indeed a splurge and a commitment: A proper sixcourse meal will take nearly three hours. Heck, it’s time well spent, and your senses will thank you for the foreseeable future. kempinski.com/adlon

GRAND HÔTEL STOCKHOLM By Inna DeSilva

I

arrived in Stockholm one evening last October, after a sojourn in Iceland. For those of you who have never been to Stockholm, you should know it’s a beautiful imperial city surrounded by water. But first a word on Arlanda Airport: It’s striking and incredibly civilized. I wondered why we cannot get JFK to be half as nice. I was thrilled that Stockholm has Uber (Iceland doesn’t) and took a $60 ride in a Mercedes Benz to my hotel. It was my first time in five years being back on the Continent and my first time in Scandinavia. One of my favorite Greta Garbo movies is Grand Hotel. So of course, The Grand Hôtel in Stockholm was on my list of places to stay. When I walked into my 1,500-square-foot suite, my jet lag disappeared instantly. It was absolutely stunning, with a large terrace overlooking The Royal Swedish Opera house and the Royal Palace. The hotel is owned by members of a prominent Swedish family, the Wallenbergs. The Grand Hôtel was built in 1874 by the French chef and hotelier Régis Cadier, who wanted to build something that reminded him of Paris. No two suites at the hotel are alike. And most have terraces. This is a perfect place for a proposal or a special anniversary. It was fun touring the hotel, which is like a mini city. It reminded me of the way the Plaza Hotel was before it was renovated by the El-Ad Group. The breakfast

is one of the best anywhere in the world and I have stayed in enough five-star hotels to have an opinion on this — everything from smoked reindeer meat to oatmeal with lingonberries to freshly baked cardamom buns that, thanks to Fika coffee shops, we New Yorkers are addicted to. One night I ate at the one Michelin-starred restaurant Matbaren, located in the basement of the hotel. I thought it was priced correctly for the exceptional seafood they serve and the excellent selection of wines by the glass. Right outside the hotel you can catch a sightseeing boat, and two minutes away by foot is the islet Gamia sten, the historical Old Town, which appears straight out of a Nordic fairy tale. The Old Town has plenty of restaurants frequented by locals, and I suggest you have lunch in one. At night I looked forward to swimming in the hotel’s gorgeous pool surrounded by large candles. Make sure to book something in the spa, which is considered the best in Sweden. Treatments use holistic products made especially for the hotel.

THE ‘R’ WORD FOUR OF THE WORLD’S BEST HOTEL PROPERTIES COMPLETE RENOVATIONS TO STAND OUT IN THE 2019 GLOBAL TRAVEL SCENE By Norah Bradford

W

hile there are many lavish hotel properties to visit around the globe, some of the standouts seem to be those that undergo renovation to both remain attractive destinations and add new features to attract the next generation of guests. Here are four destination properties you need to add to your travel plans.

The Ritz-Carlton Montreal ritzcarlton.com Montreal has recently celebrated its 275th anniversary, and the Ritz Carlton is celebrating more than a century in this Francophone gem of a city that is only an hour’s flight from New York. The Ritz-Carlton Montreal has also successfully completed a $200 million refurbishment that brought the property into the 21st century. Boasting updated accommodations, Daniel Boulud’s Maison Boulud, a fabulous spa, and North America’s first Dom Perignon Champagne bar, this enduring grande dame of Montreal’s hotel scene has much to celebrate.

Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London mandarinoriental.com After closing part of the hotel for renovations last year, the picturesque Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London is now fully open this season after completing extensive updates to the facilities and guest rooms. The New York designer Adam D. Tihany led a revisioning of the property’s spa, restaurants Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (of The Fat Duck fame) and Bar Boulud from Chef Daniel, and Mandarin Bar to create exciting new spaces. Add to this redesign of the guest rooms and public space to recapture the golden age of travel for a new generation of guests and also a new general manager, Amanda Hyndman to helm the next golden age of this hotel. The Hotel Jerome, an Auberge resort Aspen aubergeresor ts.com/ hoteljerome The jet-set who ski in Aspen, Colorado, rank Hotel Jerome at the top of desirable accommodations. Now celebrating its 130th anniversary, Hotel Jerome has been central to life in the town. As an Auberge resort, the hotel has seen a number of changes and enhancements. Hidden in plain sight is the speakeasy experience Bad Harriet, located inside the neighboring former Aspen Times newspaper building. The chef Rob Zack, who has been with the hotel for some 20 years, continues to apply his culinary artistry to the modern American bistro cuisine served in the main restaurant, Prospect.

La Bastide de Gordes France gordes.airelles.com An 800-hundred-year-old former chateaux, La Bastide de Gordes was the 2018 European winner of the Prix Villegaiture award for most charming hotel in Europe. While many aspects of La Bastide are focused on tradition, other renovations focused on developing its Sisley Spa, which was last year’s recipient of the best new luxury hotel spa in France. The dining options are both wide and varied, including the just-opened Le Tigrr, offering an Asian dining experience.

Let me inspire you! BY ANDREA CORREALE While there’s definitely a trend towards healthy and clean this is summer, every once in a while we simply want to cheat a little! And, that’s OK! The days are longer and warmer which means you and your prospective guests are more active. Besides, any good fete calls for something cold and sweet in the seasonal heat. For something really hot, wow your guests with some fashionable ice cream sandwiches. No, not the ball park variety that rely on giant chocolate chip cookies bookending a bland vanilla center. Go haute couture with the inimitable French macaroon and your own, homemade ice cream. Sound challenging? Think again! These colorful little gems are easy to make, easy on the eyes, and delectable to boot. ANDREA CORREALE, ENTERTAINING EXPERT, FOUNDER & CEO OF ELEGANT AFFAIRS

A COCKTAIL ODYSSEY — MONTAUK TO MANHATTAN By Sharon Roth

O

ur midsummer cocktail odyssey begins with a morning beach run/yoga and iced coffee at Jack’s in Amagansett. With the healthy part of the itinerary out of the way by 10 a.m. (and hopefully sufficient calories burned to offset the rest of the day’s) let’s start with simple mimosas and scones at East Hampton’s Maidstone. Although the Maidstone’s indoor décor is so charming, we kick off our perfect summer day in the garden or on the front porch. Cheers to a day of sun, friends, and libation discoveries! Ready for the beach — need we even ask? Gurney’s is going tropical this summer. While whiling away a not-so-sleepy summer afternoon on one of its coveted beach beds, you can now savor one of its beach cocktails in a custom coconut — or just fresh coconut water for the health conscious. (Inventory permitting: Gurney’s does run out on weekends, so if you are coconut determined, ask early.) Gurney’s cocktail options are ever-widening, with the Frosé remaining an optimal choice for an afternoon cool-down, crafted from Provence rosé, strawberry-infused vodka, and citrus accents. Another beautifully colored, refreshing beach-time pick . . . with a kick: the Strawberry Chili Margarita, which is as happily spicy at it sounds, made with infused habanero and jalapeno tequila, Cointreau, strawberry, and lime. As day moves toward dusk and palates crave more sophistication and complexity (sometimes . . . and sometimes not. This is summer after all. If your taste buds are beginning to devolve, take a break with a cleansing ginger-based mocktail), make your way upstairs to enjoy an ocean sunset and some of the best cuisine in the Hamptons at Scarpetta. A classic SocialLifeMagazine.com

aprés-beach refresher is the Aviation — light, lemony, and tart with Brooklyn’s Greenhook gin, Luxardo maraschino liqueur, crème Yvette, and dehydrated lemon. While this may sound a little like key lime pie in a cocktail glass, the Aviation actually enjoys an illustrious history as a pre-Prohibition Era bar classic known as the “secret handshake” drink. It alerted bartenders of your “of a certain set” status and has been savored by cocktail aficionados for decades around the globe. Props to the Scarpetta bar staff for their creative history digging. Plus it’s delicious. Next, try a flavorful Gurney’s original: the Primavera Piccante, with jalapeno-infused Casamigos tequila, mezcal, green chartreuse, lime, and Angostura bitters — a fun blend of citrus and spice that packs a nice punch. Then, if you are still standing, move outside to the fire pit for the aptly named High Society, a light libation of mezcal, pineapple, ginger, citrus, and Peychard’s bitters. (Another fun fact: Both Angostura and Peychaud’s bitters are of early 19th-century apothecary origins. Angostura originates from Venezuela, while Peychaud’s has roots in 1830s Creole New Orleans.) Back in Manhattan, cure your weekend hangover and beach withdrawal water (pond) side at the Central Park Boathouse, with the Boathouse Sunset, a savory blend of vodka, St. Germain, grapefruit juice, and mint leaf. Finally, end the extended weekend in a classic spot and with my personal favorite Manhattan cocktail of all time: the White Cosmopolitan at Daniel. What can I say: With its perfect tartness and floating orchid ice ball, it is simply irresistible on every front. To summer odysseys — may we have many, many more!

UCHI, A CULINARY TOUR DE FORCE By Devorah Rose

Photography by Nitzan Rubin

T

he Hamptons is experiencing one of the most incredible sushi menus a foodie could ever wish for this July because Uchi came to the East End for a one-month pop-up restaurant at The Garden at Water Mill. Hamptonites still have the opportunity to experience the chef Tyson Cole’s James Beard Award-winning restaurant. It is famed in Austin and Houston as one of the most creative takes on Japanese cuisine, and I can attest that this restaurant lives up to its incredible reputation. What you can expect from the Uchi pop-up is its playful and inventive take on sushi. The multicultural omakase menu will feature several of the restaurant’s iconic hot and cool tastings as well as new dishes. Trust me when I tell you to be sure to try it! This is hands down my favorite restaurant in all of Texas as well as my favorite nouveaux sushi restaurant. Open for dinner only, Thursdays–Sundays until July 28. $225/person.

NEW YORK MAGAZINE’S LEADER IN THE LAW Ken Jewell is one of America’s most distinguished matrimonial lawyers. He has been quoted extensively as an expert in the New York Times, Town & County, the New York Post, and the New York Law Journal. “Divorce is an awful experience, highly emotional and painful for all parties involved. So why drag the process out, prolonging the agony — and run up more legal fees,” says Jewell. He runs his East Side matrimonial law practice, Jewell Law, with that philosophy — resolving matrimonial disputes efficiently and enabling clients to move forward. His clients have included CEOs, high-profile super models, performance artists, owners of renowned business establishments, real estate moguls, and other well-established professionals.

JEWELL LAW Jewell tries to get his clients to see divorce proceedings in as positive a light as possible as a way to move on from an unhappy situation. One of the biggest problems in matrimonial law is that everybody wants justice, Jewell explains, but marriage is one of the closest relationships anybody can have. It’s not the kind of relationship where justice is always available.

WHY MATRIMONIAL LAW? Before attending law school, Jewell spent ten years as a Supreme Court librarian in Nassau County helping judges and lawyers with research. He was torn between becoming a psychologist or an attorney, and matrimonial law seemed a natural fit. “It sort of hits the hybrid of being both a psychologist as well as being an attorney and helping people,” says Jewell. kenjewell-law.com 555 Fifth Avenue 212.856.7273
