PUBLISHER’S LETTER

July Fourth in the Hamptons is the place to be. The unmatched beauty of its beaches and countryside is truly a treasure. Life-changing, I’m convinced. Spend time here, slow things down a little, and detach from your smart-phone. You’ll see what I mean. Of the many freedoms July Fourth represents, my favorite is freedom of the press. Let us not forget the importance and the ideas of a free nation, and how we reached where we are today. Freedom impacts our lives every day, and it’s worth protecting. This summer is special for Social Life Magazine, as we are celebrating 16 years in print. Where did the time go? I don’t know. What started out as a simple idea has evolved into the primary publication of the Hamptons. I remember the long nights my staff and I put in over all these years. Seeing how all the articles, covers, and event photos come together to make an issue has made a deep impression on me. Working on this magazine has shaped thoughts and ideas in me, and has changed my life forever. I’m looking forward to another 16 years in print and all the experiences and memories to come. The most exciting social happening this weekend is Polo Hamptons. On Saturday, June 29, Christie Brinkley will host Polo Hamptons, a polo match and cocktail party in Bridgehampton. This will be the pinnacle event of the summer, and I recommend attending. For more information and to buy tickets go to polohamptons.com This holiday weekend is a great time to relax and spend time with family and friends. This is the time to build life-long memories with people who mean the most to us, and with the new people who we meet. The Hamptons offers the perfect setting for celebrating life. This year’s July Fourth falls on a Thursday, so why not extend your stay for the entire week. If you must work, why not do it remotely for a few days? If you’re wondering what you might do with so many days in the Hamptons, let me assure you July is the most socially active month of the summer, sometimes with multiple charity events happening in one night. And that doesn’t include the dinner parties, weddings, or private events. For some people, July Fourth marks the beginning of the summer. But not for me. For me, June was a great time to be in the Hamptons! Turn the pages in this issue of Social Life to see what you might have missed. Happy July Fourth!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

In a letter to the Wall Street Journal, in 1966, Allen Ginsberg wrote “. . . You own twice as much rug if you’re twice as aware of the rug. Possessing more means being aware of more: & that ‘awareness’ is banked in areas we call feeling . . .” I too believe that the way our senses perceive experiences is directly related to our level of awareness and values. In keeping with the rug example, if you don’t just notice the lovely rug in your living room, but actually take the time to look at it and think about the craftsmanship and imagination involved in creating it, then you have “twice the amount of rug” or I believe a deeper sense of appreciation. Appreciation is an incredible feeling isn’t it? There are so many terrific feelings we can choose to meditate on and experience every day. It’s amazing to me how people don’t connect with their better feelings by practicing gratefulness, appreciation, and contentment. There are so many who keep chasing, chasing, chasing for the next best thing. If you are at a good party, why not enjoy it instead of worrying if there is a better one somewhere else? I think this empty feeling fuels consumerism while the feeling of imagination and appreciation fuels success and creation. During a 2011 interview with John Currin of Interview Magazine, Tom Ford said: “ . . . I struggle with materialism. And I’m one of the least materialistic people that exist, because material possessions don’t mean much to me. They’re beautiful, I enjoy them, they can enhance your life to a certain degree, but they’re ultimately not important.” As one of fashion’s most extraordinary craftsmen, Tom Ford’s disinterest in material possessions is further proof that it’s one’s spiritual life, not things, that truly matters most. I hope that everyone moves through the summer with gratitude and awareness of everything and everyone around them. With love,

Devorah

LETTER FROM THE SENIOR EDITOR

Christine Montanti, Photography by Don Fitzgibbon

HAMPTONS LUXURY SPORTS This month we are celebrating our July 4th issue with our third annual Polo Hamptons event in Bridgehampton. The sensational sport of Polo is older than recorded history and over the years the luxury game, played on horseback, has modernized and evolved into quite an exciting, unparalleled sport. Join us as we kick off the holiday weekend by attending this elite sports event hosted by Christie Brinkley being held on Saturday, June 29th. There are many other popular sports to engage in during the summer and golf is undoubtedly at the top of the list. With almost two dozen private and public courses to choose from, the luxury sport is widely enjoyed on the East End, home to several of the best golf courses in the world. There are quite a few historic golf courses that can be played while admiring the Hamptons majestic landscape. The prestigious Sebonack Golf Club provides an extravagant golfing experience with its remarkable clubhouse and breath taking water views of Peconic Bay and Cold Spring Pond, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club is ranked fourth in the America’s 100 greatest courses and was the host to last summer’s U.S. Open, and National Golf Links of America, known for the course’s greatest collection of golf holes scientifically designed for players to experience thrilling angles from short and long holes. The Hamptons is known for its pristine Atlantic Ocean beaches and waters, so it’s not surprising that water sporting activities are popular and are guaranteed to deliver a sensational experience. Savor summer days sailing or boating in Sag Harbor while enjoying various water sports from Jet Ski’s to paddle boarding or perhaps sport fishing on the shores of Montauk. Don’t forget to rent a luxurious yacht with friends and family to swim or simply enjoy cocktails while watching the sunset. Whatever activities you engage in on this 4th of July holiday, be sure to make it an experience that is unforgettable! Warm Wishes

Christine Montanti

Nigora Tabayer, founder and designer

M

ore than ever before, our lives are marked by seeking the things that are the most unique. From clothing for our kids to our wedding dresses to the features of our cars to the houses where we choose to live, we want to be intentional and statementdriven. This is nothing new with jewelry — but, finding something that is reflective of our personality is often elusive. “My mother is innately protective, as mothers are, and was always making sure I was safe and healthy,” says Tabayer. “When I began designing, the meaning of jewelry and what we put on for different occasions, inspired the direction for my collection. If I am going to an event, a wedding, or on a trip, even out to dinner, I want to wear something that combines luxury with important meaning.” Tabayer, who was raised in a dynamic and artistic household, says that the wildly sought-after Collection, which is inspired by the “eye,” represents a powerful symbol of protection. To fête the premiere of the Eye Collection, the designer introduced her limited-edition collection in March at the Hôtel de

Crillon during Paris Fashion Week. The first capsule featured hybridizations of letters and eye amulets. Debuting a collection with these heartfelt charms was the first step in showcasing Tabayer’s mantra: her label will always blend wearable ultra-luxury with deep and personal sentiments. To say that the collection is hot is to misread its temperature: it’s scorching, which is evidenced by the number of celebrities and otherwise well-heeled women who are adopting the protective eye for their own wardrobes: Halima Aden, Milla Jovovich, Coco Rocha, Shanina Shaik, Caroline Vreeland, Rebel Wilson, and Jessica Kahawaty are just a few. The collection includes pendants, bracelets, and more. All Nigora Tabayer pieces are made to order; pricing is available upon request and starts at $20,000 and up. nigoratabayer.com @nigoratabayer Social Life

her girl-power anthem “Girls,” for which Ora teamed up with Cardi B, Bebe Rexha, and Charli XCX. It was, of course, another global success. All these hit songs are featured on her album Phoenix, which launched late last year. In addition to her music, Ora has become an international primetime star onscreen as the host of MTV’s EMA in 2017, as a coach on BBC’s The Voice, a judge on The X Factor UK, and the host of VH1’s America’s Next Top Model. Throughout it all, Ora has been an inspiration to women. “What advice would I give young women today? I would say to pursue what you love to do and don’t be afraid to step away from the norm and take a chance. There are no barriers to what you choose to do with your life and what you can be successful in,” says Ora. “The sky is the limit. Trust yourself and go for it!” That tenacity is what has led to Ora’s involvement with ESCADA. “I am so excited to have shot the spring/summer 2019 campaign,” says Ora. “The brand has such bold beginnings, and I love that their DNA centers around bright colors, powerful prints, and strong women!” Most recently, Ora drew the attention of trendsetters globally with the launch of the ESCADA “Heart Bag by Rita Ora.” “The Heart Bag is what I think about when I think of ESCADA. I absolutely love the bright colors and bold shapes of ESCADA and so the heart bag is definitely a signature piece,” she says. “The best thing about the heart bags and the reason they are so symbolic is because of the message behind them — that you can be who you want to be, challenge the rules and feel strong and confident.” In harmony with ESCADA’s bold palette, Ora’s love for the color red, signifying strength and passion, appears everywhere from the bag’s soft calfskin leather to its hardware. Its concentric heart pays tribute both to ESCADA’s proud femininity and Ora’s celebration of female independence. Extending this passion into tangible change, ESCADA and Ora are donating a portion of proceeds from the sale of each bag to Women for Women International, a charity whose mission is to help female survivors of war rebuild their lives. According to Ora, the collaboration with ESCADA, which is the talk of the industry, is inspired. That said, there is much that inspires Ora. “In general, there isn’t just one thing that inspires me. It really is something different every day. It may be a conversation with a friend or stranger or an experience that may motivate me to write SocialLifeMagazine.com

I enjoyed modernizing what ESCADA has really always represented, which is just this incredible passion for dressing women in a chic, sensual, but always empowered way.” u The “Heart Bag by Rita Ora” is available worldwide in stores and online. escada.com

LOVING THE LILLY LIFESTYLE By Blaire Bass

Adalee shift dress, $188

F

or 60 years, Lilly Pulitzer has been a favorite for summer frolickers in the Hamptons. With a heritage and aesthetic based on the Palm Beach resort lifestyle, the Lilly Pulitzer brand was originally created in the late 1950s and has epitomized resort wear ever since. We can’t get enough of the bright colors (think lots of pinks and yellows) and whimsical patterns. We sat down to learn more about the iconic brand from the Lilly Pulitzer CEO, Michelle Kelly. Can you tell us about Lilly Pulitzer’s foray into fashion? We just love the juice stand to fashion icon story! It’s quite a story! This spring, we debuted Lilly Pulitzer, published by Assouline, which tells the full story beautifully — with over 300 pages of history and 60 years of brand legends, it’s hard to boil it down. The short version is that the bright and colorful Lilly was a strong woman with a fearless, brave spirit, who set out to do things her own way. She planted her roots in America’s original resort town of Palm Beach, where she and her

husband owned orange groves. While raising a family, she sought to do more with her entrepreneurial streak. She opened a juice stand on Via Mizner just off Worth Avenue and encountered an unexpected side effect of her juice stand — splashes and spills. She worked to bring a dress to life that would camouflage juice stains. She wanted a simple dress that fell away from the body, zipped easily, was lightly lined, and brightly colored in pinks, greens, yellows, and oranges to hide spills. She wore her shift dress to her stand and received so many compliments that she began to sell her dresses, too. Soon her dresses were outselling the juice. An iconic style was born. Some of America’s iconic women embraced the Lilly look. Can you tell us about some of them? The book Lilly Pulitzer spills the juice on some of the iconic women and generations of families who have embraced the Lilly, including Jackie Kennedy, various Whitneys and Vanderbilts, and in more recent years we have seen Claudia Schiffer Social Life

model the Lilly and Gwenyth Paltrow’s goop collaborate with the brand. How has the fashion brand evolved over the years? We always celebrate what’s new, embrace our strong heritage, and bring to life what Lilly Pulitzer means for a particular year and beyond. We now offer a full collection of beautiful resort wear, including dresses, sportswear, swim, golf, tennis, accessories and gifts. The iconic shift dress has evolved in many ways and there are so many varieties, We offer shifts with stretch, shift rompers, the iconic shift shape with a modern fit, soft knit shifts, and so much more. Can you talk about how the brand became a must-have with the preppy set? The brand grew in the early years when the women who bought Lilly’s dresses at her fruit stand in Palm Beach during the winter months brought their Lillys home, and debuted them across America in the summertime, when it was natural for everyone to turn to a shift dress for their daily look. This led to an iconic American style that is truly Lilly and held dearly across many generations. Social Life fashion editors selected a few of their favorite Lilly items for the summer. Join us in each issue this season to see more of what we love about Lilly.

24 HOURS IN SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY By Gregory DelliCarpini Jr.

S

aratoga Springs offers a great quick escape out of the everyday haze of New York City. Just a three-hour train or car ride from NYC, Saratoga Springs has something for everyone. From an incredible food scene to spas and nature hikes, the city is equipped with everything you need for a little mental detox. The most notable hotel in Saratoga right now is The Adelphi Hotel. This property is a Victorian dream with modern conveniences and bathrooms bigger than most NYC apartments. The hotel took four years and $34 million to be transformed to the gorgeous hotel it is now. Though the property is completely updated, the Victorian charm and design were kept perfectly intact. While this hotel is rooted in luxury, it doesn’t take itself too seriously and has a wonderful quirky charm throughout. When you do venture out of your extremely comfortable and beautiful room, you’ll find a large number of tasty spots to eat at in town. Located in a cottage that appears to be out of a fairy tale, Bread Basket is a bakery that serves some of the best bread I have ever had. Putnam Market is an adorable market in town that has anything you may need for a great breakfast or lunch. Be sure to check out the wine shop located right next door. If you develop a craving for Parisian food, head to Mrs. London’s.

This cafe is incredibly charming and is rooted in the French culinary tradition — offering fresh breads, tarts, and so much more. Mrs. London’s is one of my favorite locations in Saratoga. If you love Mrs. London’s, be sure to check out Max London’s next door. The dinner menu is divided into small plates, pizzas, pasta, and salads. The cocktails are delicious and made from fresh and local ingredients. For some true Italian charm and delicious pasta, head to Solevo Kitchen & Social. The eggplant creations here are truly amazing and all the pasta is made fresh in house. The Adelphi Hotel is home to Blue Hen, a new restaurant by David Burke. It offers an eclectic selection of breakfast, brunch, and dinner options. When you’re not eating, there are a number of activities to take part in. Races at the Saratoga Race Track run from July 11 to September 2. The Roosevelt Baths & Spa is a piece of NY history that is too good to pass up. Established in 1935, this resort spa allows you to experience natural spring mineral baths, massages, and other spa treatments. Be sure to check out the contemporary art collection at The Tang Museum located on the campus of Skidmore College. If you’re in the market for an escape, head to Saratoga Springs and get lost in the magic of a small town with extraordinary food. Social Life

ONTHELIST ESSENTIALS By Robin Ross

Guest List ++

A

ll my life I’ve been privileged to attend every exclusive NYC event out there. I was constantly being asked how I got on a particular guest list. I created YOUAREONTHELIST.com to share how others can experience those seemingly impossible-toget-into events. When YOUAREONTHELIST.com launched, we fielded questions beyond event logistics, like what to wear or where to go afterward. For the Hamptons, the list of questions grew: what to pack, where to eat, who to call for a quick facial or fashion emergency, etc. Eventually, I provided our members with #ONTHELIST ESSENTIALS, our version of a “go bag,” containing a list of our ITLIST items, contacts, beauty/wellness/fitness services, restaurants, etc. It became a combination stylist, little black book, insider info, and bff, usually available to only a few insiders and our members. With the rise of the shared experiential economy YOUAREONTHELIST can finally share and democratize this insider stuff. For some, it’s enough to be on a guest list, but we want ONTHELIST to provide more, like health and beauty tips, inside info, and conscious giving. This fall, our website will offer ONTHELIST essentials. You can rent, purchase, and donate directly from our site. Events will be customized by destination or experience and curated for personal style. Think festival weekend at Coachella. Front row @ NYFW. Superbowl. We will feature guest curators such as fashion influencers, new designers, and celebrities You can explore all the newest products and fashion for men and women, at all price points, without being a fashion editor or having a personal shopper. Also included will be an ITLIST surprise: Either insider discounts or samples from the freshest brands plus our little black book of contacts and insider info, the stuff that isn’t in any travel book or blog. We will offer the experience of conscious giving. You can donate any amount to our partner charities. We will have options where all proceeds go to charity. All of the above will create the #ONTHELIST ESSENTIALS experience. Here are some Hamptons #ONTHELIST ESSENTIALS.

ANGELO DAVID REVITALIZING YOUR BEAUTY CONFIDENCE WITH COUTURE HAIR By ElizaBeth Taylor Photography By Jaime Pavon The famous 18th-century English poet Alexander Pope wrote, “And beauty draws us with a single hair.” The modernday world appreciates luscious locks the same way. Gorgeous hair makes one feel alive and sexy. It is the thing most desired by individuals experiencing hair issues. Angelo David Salon strives to make each client look stunning and feel worthy of poetic sentiments. The salon’s creative director and owner, Angelo David Pisacreta, wants to bestow each client with his gift of beauty confidence. To sit in his chair is a new sort of salon experience — something magical and transformative. This hair illusionist uplifts the soul. His Midtown Manhattan salon is one of the best in the industry and a destination for boosting your self-assurance. His world-renowned techniques and wealth of knowledge make him one of the leading artists performing hair miracles. “Almost half of all women have thinning hair, which is really distressing to them,” says this gifted stylist. “Great hair is part of women’s self-esteem, and by working with women to help solve fine- and thinning-hair problems, I brought my artistry to the next level.” His vast experience has made him a master who specializes in hair health and growth for both his female and male clients. Clients around the world have experienced the wonder of his work, including even those who suffer from alopecia or hereditary hair loss. Addressing underlying issues is just the beginning of Angelo’s skill set as a master stylist. Reflecting on the passion that drives him, he explains, “I’m a veteran in the industry, with prestigious clientele and a salon on Madison Avenue. I’ve become an expert in haircare because I live and breathe it every day. I am always looking for new ideas and I love being a pioneer in what I do.” Angelo is also the incredible inventor of his popular line of couture hair. Angelo David Salon is the world’s only salon that offers completely customized couture wigs, hairpieces, extensions, additions, fillers, clip-on bangs, and ponies that are 100% human hair. This luxury hair can command as much as $3,000 to $10,000. “Faux hair has now become part of our culture; it’s no longer taboo to talk about it.” Hair pieces may be prevalent in salons, but according to Angelo, “You must know how to do it right and go all in.”

Angelo David

At Angelo David Salon you can choose from dozens of extensions and additions, as well as dozens of different application methods. Groundbreaking attachment techniques include strand-by-strand, hot fusion, cold fusion, micro-cylinder, bonding/adhesive, linking, and tube shrinking. This master stylist says, “Couture hair is not only to address thinning hair. It has become part of the culture in fashion, editorial, and television. Don’t be fooled by celebrities changing their look overnight. This is made possible with couture hair, and more and more people are embracing this lifestyle.” Every component of Angelo David Salon’s couture hair is designed on-site by professional wig tailors who match each client’s hair texture, type, and color. “The wig tailors customize hair and alter it to just for you,” Angelo declares about his dedicated team. Across the board his inspirational fervor for beauty makes Angelo a shining example in the industry, with no signs of slowing down. Innovation and creativity are what drive the accomplishments of the salon. It is this outlook that helped him formulate his successful Hair Detox hair-revival supplement. The exclusive lifestyle supplement combats the problem of unhealthy hair by correcting nutritional deficiencies, environmental aggressors, and hormonal imbalances through natural nutrients that are specifically selected for their traditional and scientifically supported combinations. Key vitamins, herbs, amino acids, and antioxidants are carefully balanced in the unique stressrelief blend, which includes biotin, mixed phytosterols, ashwagandha root extract, L-theanine, holy basil leaf power, astragalus root powder, gotu kola powder, and saw palmetto berry extract. It is the first lifestyle dietary supplement with all-natural ingredients that are specifically selected to help improve the effects of stress and, at the same time, detox your system. Hair Detox also addresses the different supplemental needs of men and women. The men’s formula contains saw palmetto, a known DHT (dihydrotestosterone) blocker. DHT is known to play a role in male-pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). The women’s formula includes cranberry fruit extract to promote urinary tract health and L-cysteine, which contributes to protein-building in cells. With use of Hair Detox, positive change is in store. Angelo has constantly evolved his portfolio and business by enhancing offerings at the salon. NUTRITIONIST-APPROVED SUMMER CLEANSE By Kristy Rao

S

ummer is a great time to cleanse our bodies. Many people are tempted to do an all-liquid diet this time of the year, but I am not a proponent of those. The results of that kind of extreme diet are usually short-lived. So, I have found that cleansing with whole foods is simply more sustainable. You can easily do this cleanse for however long you wish, but I recommend a week or two. You will be amazed at the results — glowing skin, restored energy, weight loss, and better sleep. Many of us drink too much alcohol during the summer, so this will also give your liver a much-needed break. Think of this cleanse as a way to give your body extra love and care instead of as a diet. Get ready for a happier and healthier you!

1

Aim to eat organic food. Now would be a good time to cook at home for this reason. When it comes to fish, go for anything wild or low in mercury, such as wild salmon, black cod, shellfish, anchovies, herring, sardines, and trout.

2

Go gluten-free. This means eliminating wheat, barley, rye, spelt, bran, farina, kamut, and couscous. Instead, have quinoa, brown and wild rice, buckwheat, teff, millet, amaranth, brown rice pasta, and pure buckwheat noodles.

3

Cut out dairy and soy. This means no regular cow’s milk, soy milk, or cheese. Instead, go for unsweetened almond, rice, hemp, and coconut milk. Sheep and goat milk products are also okay.

4 5

Do not use artificial sweeteners. This includes not chewing sugar-free gum! Stick to stevia, small amounts of raw honey, or 100% maple syrup.

No alcohol, coffee, fruit juice, or soda. Stay clear from all caffeinated and sweetened beverages. Opt for non-caffeinated green or black tea, spring and sparking water, and fresh vegetable juice.

He has also appeared in national magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, More, and Elle as well as in the New York Times and Newsday. In light of his busy schedule, it’s a wonder that Social Life was able to secure some of his thoughts regarding the hottest treatments women and men are seeking today.

BREAST AUGMENTATION “These days, most women opt for my rapid recovery procedure. There are also many new implant types that allow me to do customizable augmentations that specifically match a patient’s anatomy. I also utilize computer imaging and analysis to help patients visualize their requested results.”

LIPOSUCTION/ CELLULITE Angeles with his long-term private chemist, and are available through his website. Dr. Greenberg was recently named one of the 10 Best Plastic Surgeons for Patient Satisfaction in 2019 by the American Institute of Plastic Surgeons, and he takes great pride in his doctor-patient relationship as a key component to providing the best experience. “After 25 years in practice, I still receive great satisfaction from helping my patients reach their aesthetic goals. Once they are happy with how they look, their entire demeanor changes. It is amazing how important these improvements can be to a patient’s state of mind.” His Woodbury location was one of seven celebrity cosmetic doctors’ offices that treat the rich and famous featured in Architectural Digest, and he was recently the featured surgeon on the New York Post’s Page Six, commenting on Kim Kardashian’s look at the Met gala. Dr. Greenberg is frequently called upon by various media outlets for his plastic surgery expertise. He has been the featured speaker at women’s groups and philanthropic events and was this year’s medical honoree at the American Heart Association’s Go Red event in February, at SocialLifeMagazine.com

“Liposuction is probably the second most popular procedure after breast augmentation and everything about it has changed. My plasma-lipo procedure allows for more fat removal, better skin retraction, and a very quick recovery, usually within 24 hours. One of the biggest requests right now is for the combination of liposuction and cellulite reduction. Amazing new technologies have proven to achieve results greater than ever before!”

FOR GUYS, TOO “These days I see guys seeking liposuction of the abdomen and love handles, and for male chest reduction. Nose jobs, eyelid lifts, and hair transplants are very popular. Of course, injectables are more popular than ever for both men and women.” As a preeminent surgeon, Dr. Greenberg is something of a legend. Because he has performed literally thousands of procedures, he has evolved them to achieve specialized results, often with uncommonly minimal downtimes. Says Dr. Greenberg, “It’s not magic. It’s science, talent, and skill that can give you a fabulous result.” Continued . . .

MIND BODY SPIRIT TRANSFORMATION By L. A. Dawson

L.A. Dawson is the author of articles, self-help books, and novels. She is also an inspirational speaker and resides in New Jersey with four happy canine friends. @authorladawson | authorladawson.com

W

hen we’re challenged with adversity, our reactions are physical, emotional, and spiritual. Even after a challenge passes, our bodies may remain in reaction mode. Returning to a state of a healthy mind, body, and spirit requires tenacity. But first we must be aware of how we are reacting to stress. Creating a calm environment can help create a calm thought process, and the thought process is the starting point. Transforming the way you think will aid you in turning negative energy and negative thoughts into positive energy and positive thoughts. A simple sequence of statements, listed below, will do that for most people. The goal is to start with your negative thoughts but end on a positive note. 1. I am unhappy because I feel unfulfilled. 2. I feel sad because I am alone. 3. I feel lost because no one understands me. 4. I want to remove the negativity in my life. 5. I am grateful for my perfect health. 6. I am thankful for my family. 7. I am happy because I look at life through the eyes of a child. 8. I look forward to the joy that tomorrow brings. By the end of this sequence, there will be small positive transformation in your thought process. Distress is taxing on the brain, but when your mind tells your body that it can relax, change happens as a result. If we get into the habit of telling our body how we expect it to function, in a perfectly healthy way, the results are faster and more noticeable. In addition, if we add a grateful and thankful thought, we can uplift our spirit. Basically, all begins in the mind, which directs our body and influences our spirit. Practicing positive mantras or sentence sequences is effective. Repetition is necessary, but it literally takes only a few minutes a day over three weeks to see that it works. Feel free to create your own statement sequence that resonates for you. The one above I wrote during a particularly challenging moment. I offer it to you to inspire and gently remind you that underneath your negative thoughts lie perfectly calm and happy ones. Go back to your statement sequences when you need to change a negative thought. u Follow my journey (Instagram @authorladawson, FB @AuthorLADawson, and on liveandheal.com) to learn, motivate, and help one another be accountable to claiming our optimal health! FOURTH OF JULY REALLY THOUGH . . . WHAT DOES IT MEAN? By Stacey Griffith

I

wanted to share with you some of the history behind our Fourth of July, as explained in constitutionfacts.com. And then I’ll comment on what this means to me. “For the first 15 or 20 years after the Declaration was written, people didn’t celebrate it much on any date. It was too new and too much else was happening in the young nation. By the 1790s, a time of bitter partisan conflicts, the Declaration had become controversial. One party, the Democratic-Republicans, admired Jefferson and the Declaration. But the other party, the Federalists, thought the Declaration was too French and too anti-British, which went against their current policies. By 1817, John Adams complained in a letter that America seemed uninterested in its past. But that would soon change. After the War of 1812, the Federalist Party began to come apart and the new parties of the 1820s and 1830s SocialLifeMagazine.com

all considered themselves inheritors of Jefferson and the DemocraticRepublicans. Printed copies of the Declaration began to circulate again, all with the date July 4, 1776, listed at the top. The deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on July 4, 1826, may even have helped to promote the idea of July 4 as an important date to be celebrated. Celebrations of the Fourth of July became more common as the years went on and in 1870, almost a hundred years after the Declaration was written, Congress first declared July 4 to be a national holiday as part of a bill to officially recognize several holidays, including Christmas. Further legislation about national holidays, including July 4, was passed in 1939 and 1941.” I wanted to share this with you because I feel we often forget to appreciate all that had happened in this country long before we were here. Our Founding Fathers laid the groundwork for us, protecting our freedoms and establishing an ideal of a democratic nation where citizens could live together in harmony. Yet, today, we are a country divided on many of the important issues of our time. Harmony in our nation, our communities, and even in our families is often missing from our discourse and actions. And despite my own deeply held convictions and sometimes disappointments, I am counting my blessings on this Fourth of July. I’m grateful for my role here in the United States of America as a female leader in my community with the job of inspiring, motivating, and celebrating the people from all walks of life who come to SoulCycle every day. I am honoring all men and women today who organized this day for us 243 years ago. Although there were no women in government back then, the wives of our forefathers must have been doing something right at the time. Happy Fourth of July, guys and gals!

DR . KAVEH ALIZADEH PIONEERING BREAST ENHANCEMENT By Jacob Puck

K

aveh Alizadeh, M.D., the chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Westchester Medical Center and associate professor of surgery at New York Medical College, is a prominent leader in the field of plastic surgery. The unique and effective procedures that he has developed for women seeking breast enhancement are regarded as some of the most successful and enduring in the field, garnering many awards. Seeking new options that have longer-term results with less scarring, women are turning to Dr. Alizadeh for procedures such as his pioneering and trademarked breast-lift techniques. One is NaturaBra, which provides unique internal support. Another is NaturaGlow, which transfers a woman’s own fat to shape and support her breasts. Do you have statistics about the increase in breast surgery? The latest update that I have from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that, in 2018, 300,000 breast augmentations and 109,000 breast-lift procedures were performed, which is more than double what was reported in 2000. This is partly due to advancements in technology and less-invasive techniques with quicker recovery. Can you explain your proprietary NaturaBra procedure and why it is revolutionary? Traditional methods simply lift everything up and suture the skin. But breast skin lacks integrity, and it will eventually fall. The NaturaBra technique uses a woman’s own tissue to create a second layer of support, which becomes an “an internal bra” that support the breasts, especially important when implants are involved. We have also combined this procedure with a woman’s own fat to avoid the use of implants altogether. What are the benefits? Longer-term support and minimal scarring. How is its effectiveness? This is what’s really exciting. We have shown that our results hold up over time: in a 10-year follow-up of over 500 of our patients, more than 80% reported maintaining the results. What other procedures would you count as cutting edge? Until recently, the only option for scarring around implants was to replace them with new implants. Now, with our NaturaGlow procedure, I can remove implants and achieve the shape a woman wants with her own soft tissue creating soft curves and contours. SocialLifeMagazine.com

What are the advantages? Women need not worry about potential complications from silicone implants, such as leaking or scarring, or be concerned with having foreign objects in their body, and the recovery is much simpler. Plus, we often perform a Robin Hood effect: take fat from the areas that have plenty to give (thighs, buttocks, and flanks) and donate it where it’s needed most. Kaveh Alizadeh, M.D., F.A.C.S. DR . ARASH AKHAVAN NO DETAIL TOO SMALL By Jacob Puck

T

he world of non- and minimally-invasive cosmetic medicine is indeed a crowded field, so when it comes to separating the wheat from the chaff, the details matter. As does the renown. Arash Akhavan, M.D., is known for both the reputation of his practice and the unique elements that keep it in the spotlight. As the founder of Manhattan’s famed Dermatology & Laser Group, Dr. Akhavan is at the forefront of advanced techniques in cosmetic medicine and was among the first to bring some of the newest technologies — for example, EmSculpt and SculpSure for body sculpting and Cellfina for cellulite — to the New York City area. A Manhattan native who was educated at Cornell and The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he is now a faculty member, Dr. Akhavan heads what is arguably the largest and most advanced cosmetic laser center in Manhattan. Perhaps that’s why he’s often the only one among his peers to be tapped as a subject-matter expert and opinion leader by major media on some of the innovations and issues that emerge within the field. “The reason for this is simple,” says Dr. Akhavan. “We truly care about our patients, and we will help them have healthy skin and achieve their dream look no matter what.” Social Life was thrilled for the opportunity to learn more from Dr. Akhavan himself. What is it that truly drives you and your practice? Customer satisfaction. Helping people is what drew me to medicine in the first place, and aesthetics is an extension of that. I have patients who come in who are really down about their appearance, and we help them get back to a place of joy. That’s what drives me every day, the happiness we create. In terms of the environment of the center, what do you think sets you apart? From the moment you step into the office, we take a very patientcentric approach. If you’re waiting more than a minute to be checked in, well, that would be unusual. The waiting room is purposely designed to be the coolest and most comfortable living room you could be sitting in — it doesn’t feel like SocialLifeMagazine.com

Alyssa DiBenedetto and Dr. Arash Akhavan

a waiting room at all. We are insanely over-staffed, and that’s intentional so that our patients literally have everything they may need or want, from the check-in process to the actual procedure to follow up. When we started the practice 10 years ago, other doctors said we were crazy and wouldn’t make money, but the model has proven to be something people really like. What’s new and advancing in the space these days? Body contouring, and we do all of it. The trend, however, is towards procedures that require less and less downtime. The hottest and most exciting procedure over this past year has been EmSculpt, which approaches body sculpting in two ways: burning fat and building muscle at the same time. It’s very exciting for patients, and can be used just about anywhere except the chest. You must get a lot of love back from your patients. We do, and it feels great. We have been on New York Magazine’s Best Doctor list for the past couple of years, we always get lots of amazing Google reviews, and our favorite feedback comes directly from the patients themselves . . . it has been a really positive way to build a practice. ehind the renowned studio, Erika Bloom Pilates, is the founder who prioritizes the natural and earthy. Erika Bloom’s wellness philosophy is rooted in the idea that nature got it right — including the mechanics of the body, food as medicine, and the healing power of the beauty throughout the East End. Erika’s nearly decade-long connection to the Hamptons has balanced the demand of building a wellness empire in Manhattan, where she lives and works most of the year, with retreating to the Hamptons, where she reconnects with nature, her family, and herself. She’s committed to building her business authentically and has formed the brand around what she does, what she knows,

and what she loves. After launching her flagship studio on the Upper East Side over a decade ago, she expanded Out East with locations in East Hampton and Water Mill. Studios in Turks and Caicos and Los Angeles followed, collectively staffed by her amazing team of instructors and practitioners. Each one of her light-filled white-walled sanctuaries offers the same exceptional attention to detail, distinguished by a commitment to the individual experience. Each client is paired with an instructor who matches specific needs, and each receives a full assessment of alignment, posture, and muscular imbalances. Using Erika’s method, the instructor helps the client design a roadmap to optimal wellness, beginning from within. Erika takes a similar inner approach to her own wellness, and summer is no exception. It’s a time she looks forward to every year, when her family caravans out to the country, and she intentionally builds their days around slowing down, experiencing nature, and spending time together. With the objective of resetting the body’s natural circadian rhythms, her days begin early to greet the rising sun and end early with the setting sun. The morning starts with a Pilates session at one of her studios. Afterward, she packs her children’s water and safe sun-care for the day and brings the kids to organic farms and markets to find the freshest local seasonal vegetables and fish. Then it’s time explore and play outdoors, later meeting up with friends, and ending in cooking a beautiful meal together. Erika’s summer retreat to the Hamptons is not only a break from the fast pace of the city, but also a time to pause and reflect on the bigger picture of her life, business, and community. Her intention is to share wellness and healing with everyone around her. Erika Bloom Pilates @erikabloompilates erikabloompilates.com Social Life

CHRISTIE BRINKLEY HORSES, SONG, AND SUMMER By Devorah Rose Photography By Gian Andrea di Stefano

Christie Brinkley’s name is synonymous with the Hamptons. Besides rolling farmland, rustic beaches, and picturesque towns, something else that frequently comes to mind when people think of the East End is polo. This June 29th, Christie will host the sport of kings at Polo Hamptons in Bridgehampton. When asked how she felt about the sport, Christie said, “I think it’s amazing to see the horses and the riders galloping around. They are so passionate, and I love activities that bring people together, especially when it brings people outside. Polo is a beautiful combination of these two things. Being outside, watching horses, enjoying the summer day, and being part of a tradition are things I enjoy.” Not too many people know that Christie has quite a bit of experience around horses. In fact, she is accomplished in the art of cattle cutting. This sport is a western-style equestrian competition where the rider shows how artfully his or her horse can separate an animal from a herd of cattle. The judges assess both the rider’s skill and the horse’s athleticism. The rider chooses a cow (or steer) for the horse to herd, then drops or loosens the reins, which signals to the horse that it is in complete control. The horse must then defeat the cow’s repeated attempts to rejoin the herd, until the rider picks up the reins to signal that it’s time to allow the cow to rejoin. The horse then repeats the dance within the two and half minutes allowed. Elaborating on the sport, Christie explains, “It stems from real cowboys who had to round up their cattle, and then it turned into a formal competition. I went out to compete in cattle cutting at the National Horse Association championship in Fort Worth, Texas. The first year I placed fourth in my division, and then the following SocialLifeMagazine.com

year I went back and I won. It was the celebrity division, and I was competing against Michael Keaton and others.” But that is not where her love of horses began. Christie grew up occasionally riding horses on summer vacation with her parents, but having her own horse was when sparks flew. “When I was married to Billy, one Christmas morning I awoke to find a white horse with a red ribbon waiting for me on the lawn. And it was the first horse of my very own. Belle Star was her name, and I absolutely loved having a horse that I got to know on a deep level. I knew everything about her: what she was afraid of, what she liked. I would groom her myself, and I just loved that. Then I got other horses and eventually got into cattle cutting.” Christie’s adventures are pretty diverse. From model to cattle cutter to songstress and back again, there is always a challenging project in her life. Confessing her surprise when approached about the recent revival of the musical Chicago, in which she also starred in 2011, Christie revealed, “I’m always open to new things, to taking on new challenges, and giving it a go. When I was asked to do Chicago this year at age 65, I thought, Well that’s an amazing challenge. And I wondered if I could do it: Can I get back in that saddle? I was so grateful for the opportunity to give it a shot and was so excited by having this new project. Things come along and for some things you know it’s the right time.” And boy was it the right time! Christie graced the stage both on Broadway and on the Las Vegas strip, and inspired audiences and critics alike. Her breathy voice and presence has been compared to Marilyn Monroe’s numerous times and having seen the show myself, I can confirm that this impression is an accurate one.

Having three successful runs on Broadway wasn’t something Christie ever expected. “Every single time I went to a play, I would watch and wonder what it would be like to be a part of that group. But I never really saw myself up there and was completely shocked when I got the offer the first time around. I was, like, what? Why are they asking me? There must be a mistake. So while I dreamed of it, I never thought it could be a real thing for me.” And yet Christie has always been surrounded by music. One activity she delights in is singing with her songstress daughter, Alexa Ray Joel. “Alexa loves to do harmony,” Christie says. “She has me do the soprano part and then she does all the harmony around it. The harmony part is the most difficult. And of course I love it because she does all the work and makes me sound good!” Music has always brought happiness to Christie and those around her. She is a fixture at the Garden when Billy performs with their daughter, Alexa. She proudly takes videos and uploads them on Instagram. And the happy supportive mother you see in public is who she is at all times. For Christie, music is the glue that binds friends and families. “Many years after our divorce, Billy would still come to my house for the Christmas singalong and play the piano, and all our friends would come over and sing Christmas carols. Singalongs are one of my favorite things to do. And you know that’s what makes everybody happy,” Christie says. Today in particular, what makes Christie beam with pride is her son’s entrepreneurship. Jack Brinkley Cook has launched Rove, a new way that the young and hip can commute to the Hamptons. Traveling (specifically the logistics of travel) is something Jack has always enjoyed. “When he was little, and we would travel, Jack was our travel guide. He would say ‘Mom, let me book the flights, let me find the best prices.’

We rarely came home the day we were supposed to from a trip. Jack would push the flights back and follow through with every little detail — from arranging all transportation to letting everyone know the new plan. He is still taking care of details. Can you imagine that when you book your ticket with Rove, you can also purchase a bouquet of flowers for your host? Making sure his clients don’t show up empty-handed is very Jack. My philosophy for a good business is if you are putting a smile on someone else’s face, it’s a good plan, and that’s what Rove does. He’s got the formula, creating smiles.” Christie’s own smile beams as she speaks about Jack. Happiness is something Christie is great at creating. One of the reasons she has created Bellissima, her brand of prosecco, is because she enjoys celebrating life and the important moments in life that call for commemoration. Continuing to grow her incredible brand, Christie has added two products to enhance the Bellissima experience. One is Bella Sprizz Elderberry. “You just splash a bit into our prosecco and it’s the most refreshing summery gorgeous drink,” says Christie. The second is Bella Sprizz Aperitif. “Most people know the Aperol spritz, but there was no challenger to this classic, so we decided to create our own beautiful orangey-red liqueur. It’s a skinnier version of an Aperol spritz when it’s mixed with our Bellissima zero-sugar prosecco. Also ours is half the price!” A new spin on an old classic is always welcome. It seems that Christie is challenging and expanding the liqueur market while her son, Jack, is challenging the established Hamptons travel market. It’s no surprise that Christie is always up to a new and exciting project. From conquering Broadway for a third time to introducing new and exciting products, Christie can always be counted on for her adventurous spirit and can-do attitude. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see what she surprises us with next! Social Life

A LIFE OF CHARITABLE GIVING AND POSITIVE IMPACT: A PROFILE OF THE PHILANTHOPIST

MARIA FISHEL By ElizaBeth Taylor Photography By Marsin Mogielski

The New York-based philanthropist Maria Fishel is a busy woman — attending lectures in art history, music, and literature at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in addition to her dedication to the family business, Renaissance Properties. But she is never too busy to dedicate time to several charitable causes, including one of the Hamptons key charitable events, the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) annual Hamptons Happening. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Maria has been donating her time as a committee member, major fundraiser, and chair of events for the SWCRF and its annual benefit event for nearly ten years. Maria and her husband, Kenneth Fishel, have been instrumental in raising funds to help the foundation’s work to minimize and eradicate the scourges of cancer. The couple is also dedicated to a number of other causes related to the arts, animal rights, health, and civic improvement. “I love helping others and I love giving,” says Maria. The success of the family-run Renaissance Properties, a luxury real estate organization — led by third-generation CEO Kenneth Fishel — enables Maria and her husband to help others, which reflects Maria’s strong belief that with wealth comes great responsibility to help those less fortunate. Growing up in Ecuador, Maria was taught the importance of giving and caring for others. Her fond childhood memories are of her parents and a regal great-grandfather who traveled from Granada, Spain, to live with them. “I didn’t have an alarm clock. There was a mango tree outside my window. The ripe fruit would fall to the ground and wake me early in the morning,” remembers the philanthropist about the simple pleasures of life at home as a young girl. Modest and unassuming days transformed into a different life when she moved to the United States as a young woman ready to take on a whole new world. Her gratitude for family and her upbringing are values she has never forgotten, nor taken for granted, and even in her home today she has a collection of plates prominently displayed, each painted with delicate flowers and trees to remind her of her mother’s garden, and her proud Ecuadorian roots. Renaissance Properties has distinguished itself as one of New York’s premier luxury real estate firms for over half a century. With more than one million square feet of prime commercial space in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Southern Florida, where it owns the state-of-the-art Class A Aventura Corporate Center, Renaissance prides itself on delivering the

JAY SCHNEIDERMAN SOUTHAMPTON TOWN SUPERVISOR

PUTTING THE PEOPLE FIRST IN SOUTHAMPTON By Blaire Bass

Jay Schneiderman, who’s in his fourth year as Southampton Town supervisor, is a consensus builder who wants to preserve the social and geographical beauty that makes Southampton special. His long history of service in the Hamptons has rendered him a favorite politician (and human being) among the residents of the East End. Growing up in this famous part of Long Island, he intimately understands the need to balance economic and cultural diversity. Anyone who lives in or has visited the Hamptons knows firsthand that the differences are huge — from summertime denizens on Gin Lane’s multimillion-dollar row to the fishermen, farmers, and nurses whose local roots and commitment to the town keep it thriving. It’s crystal clear that there’s tremendous economic disparity. That’s a tough gap to tackle. But, the desire to make Southampton a better place for everyone is a major driver for Jay. He gets up every day with the passion to overcome this challenge.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

POLITICAL PATH After earning his bachelor of art degree in chemistry from Ithaca College and a master of art in education from the State University of New York at Cortland, Jay taught science, mathematics, and music at various East End schools. He also managed his family’s hotel business in Montauk, and later formed a resort property management company. But, Jay is no stranger to politics. He went on to serve two terms as the supervisor of East Hampton Town and six two-year terms in the Suffolk County Legislature. He is credited with many accomplishments, including the widening of County Road 39 in Southampton, initiating Suffolk County public bus service on Sundays, preserving thousands of acres of open space and farmland, and never raising property tax rates in 20 consecutive years of elected office.



F E AT U R E S

CONSENSUS & COMMUNITY BUILDING Jay believes in the power of the people. Jay treats everyone with dignity and respect. Everyone, be they rich or poor, has an equal voice. His role doesn’t only open the door to meeting celebrity politicians like Joe Biden and Michael Bloomberg, it affords him the opportunity to drive real change in the community. He’s proactive in bringing residents into the dialogue to get a sense of where the community stands on important issues. He insists, “It’s their town, their future.” His team leverages an outreach program that actively aims to cultivate a strong sense of community by soliciting feedback on key challenges the community faces, such as creating affordable workforce housing opportunities, preserving historic buildings, maintaining clean water, and preserving the charms of the small town way of life.

GROWING UP HAMPTONS He has lived most of his life in Montauk, where he and his sister, Helen Ficalora, own the Breakers Motel, an iconic Montauk beach resort. Jay now calls Southampton home. A proud father, Jay has two children (daughter, Magdalena, and son, Ruben), whom he affectionately calls “awesome.” His parents grew up during the Great Depression, and as Jay says, “It taught them to prepare for hard times,” and he credits them for his skills in managing budgets. Both East Hampton and Southampton achieved AAA credit ratings, the highest available, under Jay’s leadership. There must be something in the Hamptons water, as both Jay and his sister have put their mark on the map. Helen is the pioneer of the alphabet charm craze. You’ve certainly seen celebrities and Hamptonites adorning themselves with her signature circular jewelry charms stamped with initials. Her pieces are sold all over, including in Bridgehampton and Manhattan.

DID YOU KNOW THAT JAY. . . . . . has a passion for music and art? You may have seen him jamming on the drums with local bands or at art shows when his sculptural work is being displayed. . . . is the only person in NY State to have been elected the supervisor of two different towns?

FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE HAMPTONS “I love the Hamptons waterways — the ocean beaches, the marshes, and bays. Driving over the Ponquogue Bridge and seeing the sparkling waters below gives me a sense peace. But more than anything else, what I love most about the Hamptons are the people,” says Jay.

THE 2019 LONG ISLAND HIGH SCHOOL LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE JAMES C. METZGER MVP CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS By Patrick Shannon With Contributions By Mike Virgintino What was the first official national sport of Canada? Lacrosse. What? Not hockey? Well, there is a bit more to the story than one simple answer. From 1859 until 1994, yes, the official national sport of Canada was lacrosse. In 1994, Canadian officials decided to “call it like it is,” and named ice hockey the nation’s official winter sport, and lacrosse its official summer sport. The history and culture of the game in the Big White North is fascinating and worthy of an exploration . . . but at another time. The question we want to ask is “What is the official sport of Long Island?” It would be hard to say there is or should be an official sport for Long Island. It has produced world-class teams and athletes representing almost every sport — baseball, basketball, hockey, football, soccer, track & field, swimming, lacrosse, and more. But, what about an official youth sport? By acclamation and observation, many would argue that LAX is the max, especially here. And, this writer will argue that Long Island is the most productive producer of lacrosse players in the nation. According to InsideLacrosse.com’s most recent “Hotbed Analysis” of Division I players, 14% are from Long Island, with the most All-Americans among them. Division I college players come from youth ranks; therefore, by extension, we’re naming lacrosse the official youth sport of Long Island. Given its meaning and importance to Long Island, James Metzger, a product of Long Island’s youth, high school, and college lacrosse programs, decided to continue acknowledging and giving back to the game by naming and granting MVP Awards for the Long Island High School Championships.

The inaugural award event was June 1st at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. There, 1970s Long Island lacrosse stars, James C. Metzger and Vincent J. Sombrotto, voted on and presented the MVPs for all four championship games. For the winners, these awards took on special meaning given the evaluators’ keen eyes for talent and personal experience. Metzger set assist records (82 in one season) and won many awards during his days at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills, including All-American honors and the 1977 Lt. Ray Enners Award for outstanding Suffolk County lacrosse player when he scored 102 points. Metzger also starred in football and played varsity basketball as a sophomore. Following high school graduation, Metzger played lacrosse for two years at Hofstra University. As an All-American, he led Hofstra in assists during his freshman and sophomore seasons (1979 and 1980). His single season points per game average (4.9) ranks fourth all-time, and his single-season assist average (2.8) ranks eighth. Metzger is a member of the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame and the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. Metzger is the founder and CEO of Whitmore, a leading insurance services and estate planning company in the New York metropolitan area, which is headquartered in Garden City. Sombrotto attended Chaminade High School in Mineola and was a Hofstra University All-American midfielder. He played in international competition for Team USA four times, winning World Championships in all four campaigns. He was named to the 1982 All-World Team and is a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Sombrotto was one of our country’s preeminent lacrosse players. Today he is a senior vice president at Whitmore. Social Life

CLIF KNIGHT JEAN SHAFIROFF INTERVIEWS CLIF KNIGHT, CO-PRESIDENT OF SOUTHAMPTON ANIMAL SHELTER

By Jean Shafiroff

T

Clif, as the co-president along with Beau Hulse, can you give our readers an update on the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation? We have had a phenomenal year in achieving one of the most critical goals of the foundation. Beau, our colleagues, and I have worked hard and are pleased to report a huge success in building a strong, diverse, talented board of directors. During the year we’ve added seven new exceptional individuals to the board: Sean Deneny, John Bradham, Dorothy Frankel, Martin Shafiroff, Lee Becker, Merritt Piro, and Dr. Marcy MacMillan. We now have terrific leadership in place. This will ensure the future of the foundation as it enters its second decade. What other major initiatives are in the works? First and foremost, the foundation is currently undertaking a search for the executive director position. This is a wonderful opportunity to lead an amazing organization. The search is nationwide, and we are having an overwhelming response from individuals with proven track records both in business and the animal welfare community. We will have important news on this shortly.

What else can you tell us about the shelter’s plans for the future? Understanding the background of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation is key to visualizing where we’re now headed. This is a young organization. Yet in its ten short years, the foundation has been enormously successful. We’ve saved thousands of lives, found wonderful loving forever homes for thousands of fabulous animals, served thousands of families in the community, and made a huge difference both in services for all of Southampton Township, including its seven villages and eighteen hamlets. We are thrilled that the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation is already recognized as one of the premier philanthropies on the East End. The point is that there’s a solid foundation for the future. Given the foundation’s great start in its first decade, its solid foundation, and so much success, what is the vision now? We have a board in place now that is moving far beyond the start-up mode and into a new phase. The foundation is fortunate to have on the board individuals who are knowledgeable Social Life

he Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that operates the Southampton Animal Shelter, a nationally recognized leader in animal welfare. The shelter provides a safe haven for lost, strayed, abandoned, and surrendered animals. It is a no-kill shelter. Animals are taken in from the entire township. All animals are accepted — no matter what condition, age, special needs, medical needs, or behavioral issues. Southampton Animal Shelter is unique on the East End in this regard. The shelter also takes in animals from overcrowded shelters in NYC and around the country, dogs from notorious puppy mills, and, in recent years, animals that have been rescued from disaster and hurricane ravaged areas in Texas, Florida, the Carolinas, and Puerto Rico. SASF relies on individual donors, foundations, grants, and corporations for its continued support.

ABOUT CLIF KNIGHT Clifton “Clif ” Knight is an attorney with extensive corporate and legal experience in media, arts, and entertainment. Clif and his wife, Raya, split their time between New York City and Southampton. He and Raya are actively involved in a number of local philanthropies, including the Southampton Fresh Air Home. Clif is also on the board of the North Carolina State University Foundation, in Raleigh, and on the board of the newly formed University of North Carolina Law School Entrepreneurship & Innovation Institute, in Chapel Hill. and experienced in the broader national animal welfare community. From a strategic perspective, and I would like to emphasize that the foundation is now in early stages of strategic thinking and strategy formulation, we have the vision to become a real player in the larger animal welfare community. This vision would entail expanding and improving facilities, broadening services, and evolving from a basic shelter and adoption facility into a sanctuary and adoption facility. This broader mission would be great for the community and certainly for animal welfare. The impact on the community will be enormous. Clif, this is impressive and ambitious. How can people help? Many ways. Most immediately, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation is hosting its 10th annual Unconditional Love gala

By R. Couri Hay with Photography by Patrick McMullan

TONYS, VOGUEING AT THE MET, PRIDE MONTH, AMFAR, BILLIONS, SHAWN MENDEZ, BILLY PORTER & PAUL MCCARTNEY Hadestown & Ferryman The Tony Awards was a tedious clunker, but it produced some good advice. André De Shields, who won for his riveting performance in the musical Hadestown, said he had three rules: “Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming, slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be, and the top of one mountain is the bottom of the next, so keep climbing.” Hadestown has amazing individual performances, and although it won for best musical, it is not Hamilton, but then what is? Bryan Cranston deserved his statue for best actor in Network, but with the premier seats costing over $900, you would have to be a Breaking Bad addict or a Crazy Rich Asian to buy into this. Luckily it closed, saving you $3K for a night at the theater with dinner at Per Se. Sadly, Broadway tickets have become a luxury akin to buying a Birkin bag, except the experience disappears way before midnight, unless you go to The Ferryman, which runs for an eternal three and half hours. Bring dinner to get you through this show that won for best play.

Burn This & All My Sons

The Hollywood stars who race to Broadway to fill their purses, revive their careers, or give themselves acting chops were unconscionably absent from the Tonys, which needed their help to attract a wider audience. Three exceptions were the Tinseltown legend Warren Beatty, there to support his wife, Annette Benning, who stars in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons and silver screen heart throb Adam Driver, who will star in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December. The charismatic actor, who turns in a brilliant tour de force in Lanford Wilson’s Burn This, was nominated and showed up despite knowing he

would probably lose to Bryan Cranston, who was considered a shoe-in. Adam’s a class act! His co-star Keri Russell, who sizzles as a Russian spy in The Americans, hasn’t shone as brightly during her debut on the Great White Way and was a disappointing no-show at the ceremony. Driver, whom I hope will return to Broadway, confessed, “If I’m not working, I literally sit in a room and think.” See this before it closes on July 14. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, with a script by the insightful Aaron Sorkin, went home empty-handed. This play can be hard to watch, but watch you must. This story of racism in the South continues to lead us to a more enlightened future. An engaging Jeff Daniels stars as Atticus Finch, but he also lost to Cranston. Hugh Jackman, Jessica Chastain, Spike Lee, Jon Hamm, Uma Thurman, and Samuel L. Jackson have all raved about this play; unfortunately, none of them showed up at the Tonys.

Cher, Tootsie & The Boys in The Band

Matt Bomer brought his eleven-year old son, Henry, to the awards and let’s all follow his example and bring young people to the theater. Zachary Quinto, Robin de Jesús and the Magic Mike star Bomer represented Mart Cowley’s iconic hit The Boys in the Band, which won for best revival of a play. cal Tootsie. If you liked Dustin Hoffman in the cross-dressing movie of the same name, sign up for the Broadway version and see why Fontana walked away with the Tony for best actor in a musical. Fontana, whose character takes off when he/ she dons a dress, uses two voices for the dual role and might have stolen the award for best actress in a musical from The Cher Show’s delightful Stephanie Block, whose costumes by the Tony winner Bob Mackie were worth the price of admission. Block channels Cher to a T, but I still don’t understand why Cher didn’t play herself! Debra Messing, 30 Rock’s Jane Krakowski, Tyra Banks, and Rose Byrne all saw Tootsie, but none of them came to support the Antoinette Perry Awards. The Kinky Boots’ star and Tony winner Billy Porter was inexplicably relegated to singing during the commercials. He’d have been a choice savvier than James Corden, who bombed as the night’s emcee. The Tonys’ fun after-party was held at the Plaza Hotel and was illuminated by lighting artist Bentley Meeker. The final words of wisdom came from the talented Anaïs Mitchell, who won for writing the best original score (Hadestown). She said, “Nobody does it alone, it takes a long time and it’s worth it.”

The mother of fashion, Met trustee, and Vogue editor-inchief Anna Wintour helped host a celebration of the exhilarating exhibition Camp: Notes on Fashion, on view at the Met through September 8, and in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. The hilarious highlight of the Met’s Pride festivities was a competition dubbed Battle of the Legends: Vogueing at the Met. This HappenSocialLifeMagazine.com

ing, staged on the museum’s plaza, featured some of ballroom’s fiercest competitors, including Asia Balenciaga, Bootz Prodigy, Omari Mizrahi, Malik Mugler, Tamiyah Mugler, and Ty Ebony. Jack Mizrahi, the co-founder of House of Mizrahi, picked the participants. Judges included Icon Queen Sinia Alaia; Twiggy Garçon, the executive producer of Kiki; Our Lady J, the producer and writer for POSE; the legendary mother Lola Mizrahi; Jose Xtravaganza, the father of the House of Xtravaganza; Jordan Roth, the president of Jujamcyn Theaters, which sponsored the event; and a beaming Anna Wintour. The judges kept giving 10s and the crowd roared for everyone, but in the end they crowned Malik Mugler the “Legend Slayer.” This authentic, interactive experience with the public was just one of the Met’s Pride events. SAFARI ROUND UP Shawn Mendes @ Robin Hood

Robin Hood Gala

David Costabile, who plays Wags on Billions, joined the glamorous gallerist Isabelle Bscher for her stellar Louise Nevelson show at Galerie Gmurzynska, at 39 East 78th Street. On another night, Constabile joined Isabelle at her table for the Robin Hood Foundation gala, which raised over 60 million dollars. The night featured a performance by Shawn Mendes. Constabile told Isabelle, “I will tell you that I have yet to meet a single actor in my entire life that didn’t want to be a rock star. There is not one of us, who wouldn’t give up every single thing they have now in order just to be a rock star. Certainly, in my imagination, I have spent a lot of time pretending to be a rock star.” gmurzynska.com

Cloning Eternity

Isabelle Bscher & David Constabile @ Galerie Gmurzynska

David Datuna unveiled Cloning Eternity, a two-part public art installation in Washington Square Park of a circle representing the ancient symbol of eternity and a skull representing life. The two pieces are made David Datuna from the artist’s signature eyeglass lenses that create a hall of mirrors effect by reflecting the viewer’s image, distilling it, and refracting it back. The sculptures are now on display with other work at his new art space in Long Island City. datuna.com

mbience is the key to any successful benefit and the Bridgehampton Tennis & Surf Club has it overflowing from door to window with their 180 degree views of the Atlantic Ocean. So, it was no surprise that the sun shone all over the LBGT Network’s summer kick-off party, “SURF’S OUT,” a 1960s-themed beach bash during Memorial Day Weekend. Who came to surf (and sip and sizzle)? How about Letitia James, the New York attorney general; Jean Shafiroff, a philanthropist and author; Rebecca Seawright, a New York assemblywoman who represents parts of Manhattan; Robert Zimmerman, a Democratic National Committee member and TV political analyst; Tom Samet and Nathan Wold, interior designers who dazzle; David Kilmnick, LGBT’s CEO; Robert Vitelli, LGBT’s VP/COO; Lynn and Jerry Lehocky, philantropists; the vivacious Stephanie Ferrara, who plans all the great parties at Bridgehampton Tennis & Surf Club; Christopher Robbins, with his team of catering wunderkinds, including all the Top Shelf model waiters serving those yummy Tito’s vodka cocktails, and on and on. MARTIN MARTINOV THE GATEKEEPER AT LE BILBOQUET (LONG WHARF, SAG HARBOR) to Broadway show producers. The customers that we have at Bilbo are some of the most colorful and successful people in New York . . . and in the world. Difficulty in getting a reservation: It gets pretty intense, especially around the big weekends like Fourth of July. However, we always find a way to accommodate our loyal customers. What you do on your days off: What days off? :)))) Between the restaurant in Sag Harbor and the one on 60th Street, I don’t get too much time off. When I do, I love the beach. I can be a total beach bum. And I love getting down to Miami any chance I get.

No Shirt. No Shoes. No Problem! Hometown: I’m from a small town in the Bulgarian mountains. To be honest, lately New York feels like my hometown. Going back to Bulgaria feels more like I’m on a holiday. Coming back to New York feels like coming back home. (I’ve lived in New York for 10 years.) Time at Bilbo: 5 years Favorite thing on the menu: I love the tuna tartare as well as the crab and avocado, but the winner must be the famous Cajun chicken! Best part of the job: I love my job! I love the fact that I get to meet so many interesting people — from actors to directors, from singers

Person you would most like to host (dead or alive): We are fortunate enough to host some of the world’s biggest celebrities. Just last year alone I was lucky enough to meet stars like Madonna, Jimmy Fallon, and Cindy Crawford. I guess I would love to host someone like Sinatra or James Dean. The boss at Bilbo: The one and only Philippe Delgrange (Don’t listen to anyone that tells you any different.) He’s not just a boss, but a mentor and an incredibly wise man! I look up to him; he teaches me everything I need to know about the business and about being a great maître d’! Social Life

Cooking talent: I can cook and I love to cook. When I started at Bilbo, I would bother the chef for recipes and then practice at home. I find cooking very, very exciting! I believe it’s a form of art and I truly respect chefs! Problem is — I never cook for myself . . . I need people to entertain; that’s the only way to get me in the kitchen :)

Nearly 600 people attended. The evening began with cocktails on the Spur, the newest section of the High Line at 30th Street and 10th Avenue that opened on June 5. Guests viewed a preview of Simone Leigh’s Brick House on the High Line Plinth. The event continued at Union West. Dinner stations, inspired by different features of the High Line, such as the woodlands and grasslands, were set up around the space for guests to experience. THE 2019 CHITA RIVERA AWARDS

PAMELA MORGAN’S CABARET SHOW

Winners of the 2019 Chita Rivera Awards were announced at The NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. The 2019 Chita Rivera Awards were produced by Joe Lanteri, the founder and executive director of the New York City Dance Alliance Foundation, Inc., in conjunction with Patricia Watt. The mission of the Chita Rivera Awards is to celebrate dance and choreographic excellence; preserve notable dance history; recognize past, present and future talents; promote high standards in dance education; and invest in the next generation.

The renowned cookbook author, lifestyle and entertaining expert Pamela Morgan returned to her musical roots when she performed her one-woman cabaret show exclusively at The Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York City. Pamela’s repertoire for her show included selections from the Great American Songbook, iconic classics by Carole King, as well as a couple of country tunes. She also teamed up with local cabaret legends Mark Nadler as her director and Gregory Toroian as her musical director, plus she was accompanied by a three-piece band.

RACHEL’S RADAR MY SAG By Rachel Heller

T

he Harbor of Sagg was once the name of this quaint whaling village, because it was a shipping port for Sagaponack to the south. Over the last few years Sag Harbor has changed more than any of the other Hamptons villages, yet its charm has remained intact. I want to take you on a little tour exploring my old finds and some of my new favorite spots that are dear to my heart when I think of Sag Harbor.

Il Cappuccino Ristorante

This authentic Italian no-frills restaurant is your go-to spot. Show up super early or be prepared to wait a long time before getting seated. I love the old world Italian atmosphere here and the charm of the wood floors against the red and white checkered tablecloths. I come here when I want to stay out of the scene, but see some of the locals who really know what’s up. PS: The garlic knots are delicious and always fresh.

Sag Harbor Variety Store

This store has been around for generations. I remember going there when I was a little kid wanting to be creative. They have the best arts and crafts and just about anything you may need, including patches, glue guns, popsicle sticks, sun tan lotion, board games, etc. If you forgot it, they got it.

The Dock House

This spot will forever be recalled when Sag Harbor comes to mind. I love the clam chowder and the fresh fish. I have been going to Dock House for over a decade. This is a great stop-over before a boat ride. You can stock up on shrimp cocktail and lobster rolls before heading out to sea. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Berry & Co (formerly known as Hampton Books) Yes! I still like to read a book in its actual page-turning form. The new location for this store is where Swept by the Sea hair salon used to be located. Right next door before you head up to the stairway to book heaven you can get a great cup of Joe at Jack’s. The beans used at Jacks are fantastically strong.

Le Bilbloquet

This is as close as it gets to my home kitchen. Bibloquet is like family to me. I have been going to this restaurant in both New York and Out East since the day it opened. I love getting dressed up for a night at this hot spot and sharing stories with the staff about my travels abroad. Most of the waiters will have more travel adventure ideas than many travel guides. I love practicing my French with the many French waiters here. This is the only restaurant where I say it is okay to eat without guilt, since everything is delicious.

House Hunting in Sag

There are many great opportunities to buy a house in this real estate hotspot. Some brand new homes have recently sold or are in contract, and some stunning beachfront properties recently became available. The neighborhood appeals to those who are tech savvy, in the entertainment industry, or are just smart cookies who see the up value. Some new homes include everything from automatic shades to electric car chargers, according to Karen Mullane Bronster, a developer in the area. Sag residents include the interior designer Vanessa Rome and Michael Heller of Talent Resources. It’s a buyer’s market as they say!

EAST END WEDDING TRENDS By Jocob Puck

Ask the Expert Interview with Andrea Correale Founder of Elegant Affairs So, what’s trending this season? We went straight to the source. If you ask celebrity caterer Andrea Correale of Elegant Affairs, she’ll tell you there are a lot of things that have changed about weddings on the East End—and mostly for the better. “If I had to sum it up, I’d say that people have more sophisticated tastes, and it’s no longer about quantity, it’s about quality,” she says. “And that goes for everything, from the length of the guest list, to the size of the venue, to the amount and style of food you serve.” Social Life Magazine: We want to know—as the expert, if you were getting married tomorrow, what is the first thing you’d do?

AC: Start thinking about permits—this is something that is sometimes overlooked, but you want to dot your “I’s” and cross your “T’s”. Parking—there are very strict rules about where and how you can park, and this is why it’s so critical to do a thorough visit of your locale as well as check in at City Hall. Finally, be sure to put blocks on hotels ahead of time – negotiate a lower price and block those rooms way in advance, because there aren’t a lot of places to stay. SLM: That sounds like a lot of work – is this something Elegant Affairs can handle?

Andrea Correale: Without a doubt, identify the location and venue. Remember, when you’re getting married in the Hamptons, it’s essentially a destination wedding and there are a lot of things that go into it.

AC: All of it. That’s just one of the advantages of working with us.

These days it’s not just the Hamptons, it’s the entire North Fork. People don’t necessarily want a traditional “function” destination, they want a vineyard or a farm, on the beach, or a beautiful home. For me, I’d probably rent a home that has something that resonates with my style.

AC: People want to make their weddings Instagramable. That means gorgeous food and flower…especially floral walls, food trucks and trolleys. In short, anything that translates into a great photo. Speaking of, don’t forget to ensure that your photographer has drones for those great overhead shots. SLM: One of the things you’re best known for is food – what are some of the can’t misses?

SLM: OK, so you get the location. Then what?

SLM: You mention the North Fork. Any suggestions? AC: There are a lot of beautiful homes. And, one locale that comes to mind is MooreHouse Farms in Aquebogue.

SLM: Of course, there are many others. What are some of the wedding features that are hot this summer??

AC: People tend to be eating super clean, often local and farm to table. Open pit BBQ a la California is hot. Slow cooked chicken and grass feed beef. Also, food stations are fun and popular—poke bowl bars and fresh guacamole bars are especially fun.

Feathers! This season wedding gowns wear drenched in feathers. Designers from Oscar de la Renta Bridal to Vera Wang showed gorgeous gowns that were accented with plums for feathers. This ethereal look isn’t for the faint of heart. This fluffy statement adds modern edge to a wedding look. Although the design is slightly costume like, if done correctly, it adds a layer of dramatic flare and theatrical glam for your big day.

AMANPURI — THAILAND PARADISE FOUND By R. Couri Hay Main Pool at Aman

AMAN JUNKIES Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Leonardo DiCaprio are among those who have made the 20-hour trip from NYC to Phuket. It’s a long flight, even on a private jet, but once you touch down, the magic carpet rolls out. We were met by a uniformed greeter from the Amanpuri Hotel and Resort, who escorted us to a chauffeured black BMW that whisked us to the hotel. Within thirty minutes we swung into the palm-lined drive to the resort’s enchanted garden. The teak wood buildings are built in the traditional Thai style, with whimsical, peaked-winged roofs. Here you may meet who the cognoscenti call “Aman junkies” because of their loyalty to the brand.

PANSEA BEACH The Amanpuri was the first in the Aman Group of Hotels and Resorts that now span the world from Turks & Caicos and Bali to Sri Lanka and Tibet. We wandered down hand-hewn stone steps, surrounded by greenery to a tiny rock peninsula on the property. This idyllic spot, edged with swaying palm trees, overlooks Pansea

Beach. The soundtrack was provided by a gentle wind and white caps rolling picturesquely against the boulders that create this stone jetty. A young Thai girl led us to the outermost table, one of only four, perched eight feet above the sand and sea. She pulled out a simple wooden chair for each of us and presented freshly pressed white linen napkins. The chef proved masterful and the cuisine an unexpected healthy and sophisticated delight. We looked out over the multiblue-hued sea from under the shade of a majestic palm tree. This setting symbolized the exquisite experience that is the Amanpuri.

THE PAVILIONS For a honeymoon, I’d suggest staying in one of the private villas or the glamorous stand-alone pavilions that face the sea and are near the beach, bar, pool, and restaurants. These rooms are spacious and have their own outdoor dining pagoda. The bedroom is a sleek, dark teak cocoon, with sliding teak doors and windows that either seal you in or open to the views of the sea. The twin bath and dressing rooms make it easy for a couple to get ready at the same time. Every day there is a different surprise: the Buddha Continued . . . Social Life

Sweat in Nirvana then recover in the elegant spa, a quiet oasis of constant pampering.

THE JET SET Every detail at this flagship hotel is elegantly curated, from the fragrant, cooled towels and the refreshing hibiscus teas that await you at every stop to the refined décor and service in the pavilions and reception areas. Billionaires, the jet set, and stars like One Direction’s Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson as well as Pierce Brosnan and Jean-Claude Van Damme and have all slept here.

PURI NAOKI It’s easy to dine at the resort. You can choose from three restaurants and cuisines. The Tiger restaurant serves Thai food, but if you want a hamburger, you can have one that tastes of home. The SocialLifeMagazine.com

TEA TIME Between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. a not-to-be-missed ritual takes place in the teahouse overlooking the pool. A gaggle of maidens make traditional Thai pancakes the size of silver dollars over a charcoal stove, while a musician softly plays an indigenous instrument. We went swimming at sunset. The water was warm and the sun’s last rays reflected off the ocean as we played in the waves like happy seals. At bedtime the music of the lapping waves lulled us to sleep. it became more difficult to sell houses. We now only do special locations that set us apart from everyone else. What makes a location A plus? It’s a place where just about anyone would want to be if they could afford it, like Bridgehampton South all the way by the ocean. Sandpiper Lane, Meadowlark Lane . . . that’s one of the hottest neighborhoods in the Hamptons. We have three houses going up over there. I’m no longer building houses in the woods very much, because there are so many people doing them, and they are much harder to sell.

In your opinion, how is this one off the charts? First of all, it’s impossible to find lots like this off the beach. It’s a very contemporary flat roof modern with ocean views. You could have dinner parties on the roof! Who wouldn’t want it? 65 SANDPIPER LANE, BRIDGEHAMPTON | $13.9M

You list exclusively with Saunders now. What prompted that decision? For many years, I put the majority of my houses on open listing. When I saw the market change, with so many builders, it became more time-consuming to sell houses. I also turned a tremendous amount of my personal focus on commercial real estate, so I really needed someone who was going to focus on marketing my houses. I have been most impressed by Saunders, the company and the people. I have been doing business with them since the earliest days, and I think their marketing and social media team is the best in the Hamptons.

Situated on a just-shy acre, the 7,630+/- square-foot home has eight bedrooms and nine and a half baths, including two beautifully appointed master suites, one on each floor. The open-concept floor plan facilitates a smooth flow among principal living areas, a dining room with wine closet, and an eat-in kitchen with appliances by Wolf and Sub-Zero, all served by a butler’s pantry. A gym is located on the second level, along with the second master suite and additional en-suite bedrooms. Private terraces overlook the property. A roof deck, including a 6' x 6' spa captures breathtaking views of the ocean. Outdoors, enjoy the heated 20' x 40' Gunite pool, as well as an 8' x 8' spa and pool house. Additional amenities include an elevator serving both levels, nine heat zones, and an attached three-car garage. Due for completion in 2020.

And what’s it like working with Mark Baron, specifically? Mark is one of the best brokers in the Hamptons. When you give him a listing, he really works hard and puts his heart and soul in it. He has amazing follow-up. He has incredible integrity, and I think the people in the Hamptons who know him and use him have complete faith in what he says, and what he does. He’s just a top-notch pro. Now that he has Saunders backing him up, it’s just fantastic.

BLOOM THE LUMINOUS GARDENS OF FREDERICO AZEVEDO By Jacob Puck

Frederico Azevedo

T

his summer, a new book is gracing the coffee tables and book shelves of the finest homes in the Hamptons — and around the world — with the release of Frederico Azevedo’s Bloom: The Luminous Gardens of Frederico Azevedo. As a preeminent landscape designer and founder of Unlimited Earth Care, Inc., Azevedo is a local artist on the grandest scale, and he is renowned globally for his lush and modern environments inspired by his former home, Brazil. Bloom, which highlights the exceptional and award-winning work of Azevedo, is an intoxicating page turner that explores the hallmarks of Azevedo’s designs: his signature, flowing floral borders; the integration of native plants; and the dramatic multi-dimensional vistas he creates. According to Azevedo, he was encouraged and inspired to create the book by his friend Suzanne Slesin, the founder of Pointed Leaf Press and a former writer for the New York Times. Slesin and her publishing house are known for their high quality, photography-driven monographs on personalities (some well known, some undiscovered, points out Pointed Leaf ’s website) from the worlds of design, architecture, and fashion. “She is a visionary and agreed that the book should not be about projects because that type of book can be so redundant from chapter to chapter,” says Azevedo. “I wanted to approach the book the same way that I’d approach a landscaping endeavor, which is much more of an iterative approach.” And with beautiful simplicity. Azevedo’s elegant designs rely on seemingly simple concepts, such as repetition of color, texture, and shape, but sophisticatedly executed with romantic effect. By layering flowers, trees, grasses, and hedges,

Azevedo’s designs — much like the book, itself — draw you in with their sense of movement and depth until you arrive at the final vista. And that’s exactly what you’ll find in Bloom, right up until the final page. In fact, each page pops with color through exuberant photography and an engaging narrative. “I think Bloom will really appeal to anyone who loves gardening and color,” says Azevedo. “It’s for people who want to see the romance in landscape. After all, that’s what flowers do — they bring love to a landscape.” Love is something that Azevedo has brought to countless green areas of the Hamptons, both commercial and residential. After founding Unlimited Earth Care, Inc. in 1993, his work quickly gained recognition as a departure from the Philippe Starckera minimalism of the early 1990s. “I was coming from Brazil and England, thinking in full color,” says the Brazilian-born Azevedo. And, indeed, he still is. For over 25 years, Azevedo’s award-winning, curated, and holistic approach to landscape design has been recognized both nationally and internationally in lifestyle, design, and landscaping publications. He is a member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, the American Horticultural Society, and the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons. He divides his time between the Hamptons, New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami, and travels abroad frequently. Bloom: The Luminous Gardens of Frederico Azevedo is a now available everywhere.

NEST SEEKERS INTERNATIONAL’S MIKE FULFREE FROM MODEL TO POWER BROKER By Blaire Bass

“It’s all about building relationships and maintaining these relationships at the highest level. I measure my success by the level of customer satisfaction and service I deliver in each and every transaction,” says Mike Fulfree, dubbed “Mr. Southampton” on the real estate circuit Out East. A Nest Seekers sales star, Mike believes that selling someone a home in the Hamptons is helping them invest in their future. Whether it’s for a first-time home buyer, someone looking for that perfect vacation home on the beach, or simply for investment, it can all be found right here in the Hamptons. The clientele in the Hamptons is so diverse,” says Mike of his clients and customers. “I have worked with people from all over the world. Many of whom call a piece of the Hamptons home. It’s a challenge, but this is one of the best real estate markets in the world. It’s so gratifying when I am able to bring a buyer and seller together.” Prior to launching his Hamptons real estate sales career, Mike enjoyed a hugely successful international career modeling for Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Diesel Jeans, Frankie Morello, and Alexander McQueen. He was named Model of the Year in 2008 and worked with the likes of the photographer Bruce Weber for Vogue, the iconic beauty Brooke Shields, and the Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel. He attended Fashion Week around the world and lived in Italy from 2009 to 2012. While visiting the Hamptons with his family, he fell in love with the culture, the spectacular beaches (especially off Dune Road) and the adventurous nature of the outdoor lifestyle one can enjoy Out East. “Deep-sea fishing on the ocean after heading out of Star Island Marina in Montauk over the summer is one of my passions. Taking time with family and friends is most important. There’s nothing better!” A connection to the community drives Mike’s charitable efforts. He is associated with the Wounded Warrior 32-mile race; he cycled the TD 5 Borough race raising funds and awareness for the Lupus Foundation of America; and he’s raised money for the Make a Wish Foundation. Mike’s tireless work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit drives him to search for listings daily for his buyers, renters, and sellers. Making those connections successful for both sides of the deal is what Mike says, “makes all the effort worthwhile.” SocialLifeMagazine.com

PETRA, JORDAN THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD By R. Couri Hay

R. Couri Hay is a travel editor and society columnist at Social Life Magazine. He began his career at Andy Warhol’s Interview and he wrote for Town & Country and People. Couri also appears on CNN, PBS, FOX and VH1 commenting on Hollywood. He lives in NYC and Southampton and is the CEO of his own PR firm.

The Monastery of Petra

THE ROSE CITY If you like traveling back in time and exploring ancient ruins, you must visit Petra, in Jordan. This city, which covers 100 square miles, has the grandest surviving examples of architecture from the Nabataean, Roman, and Byzantine eras. Petra’s architectural sites, along with Egypt’s pyramids and Peru’s temples of Machu Pichu are the most spectacular ancient sites still in existence. But history alone is not the only reason to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates from at least 300 BCE. Petra, known as the Rose City because of the color of the stone from which it was carved, is dazzlingly beautiful. It is truly an ancient wonder, and experiencing it is like discovering a secret rose-hued oasis in the desert; it literally takes your breath away. If you spend several days (and I recommend at least three if you like to trek), see Petra at dawn, dusk, and high noon. The city, carved into the red rock of the mountains changes colors from rose gold to blood red. The romantic evening excursions by horse-drawn carriages are entirely illuminated by candlelight, which adds more than a touch of mystery to the night. If you don’t have three days, you can see Petra’s highlights in four hours if you are willing to zip along and forgo hiking up and around the royal palaces.

INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE You may recognize Petra from the movies as it’s cinematic good looks have not gone unnoticed in Hollywood; at least 30 movie and television productions have been shot on location in the Rose City. Perhaps most famously, it served as the setting for the final scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), in which Harrison Ford as Indy searches for his father, played by Sean Connery, who has gone missing while searching for the Holy Grail. all the stamps in your passport, but it’s fast. One tip: if you’re going in this way, bring luggage that has wheels, as you need to walk about a block to get to the Jordan taxi stand. I suggest having your hotel send a driver to pick you up for the two-hour ride from the border to your accommodations in Petra. The scenery changes dramatically here, as you are at the fringe of the desert, and the land and the mountains glisten with various colors as the sun sets. My driver, Abdoula, was friendly, informative, and on time.

FROM ISRAEL OR EGYPT Once upon time you couldn’t travel directly from Israel to Jordan, but, thankfully, those days are long gone. If you are already in Israel visiting the holy sites and food markets in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, or in Egypt visiting Luxor, do not pass up Petra. It’s just a 45-minute flight from Tel Aviv to Eilat, the Israeli beach town that is only a 15-minute cab ride from Jordan. All was peaceful, and it was easy to navigate through the fortified border. Jordan has been welcoming tourists to Petra for the last 68 years, and they are happy to see you and your U.S. dollars.

VISA, ON THE SPOT You can buy a visa at the border for around $100. There’s a bit of bureaucracy that takes you to several windows to get SocialLifeMagazine.com

WHERE TO STAY & EAT MÖVENPICK HOTEL I opted to stay at the five-star Mövenpick Hotel, which is literally a two-minute walk to the entrance of Petra. My suite had all the modern amenities and faced the mountains. This hotel is designed in the Arabian style, with a central courtyard that reminded me of the hotels in Marrakesh. The hotel has a lavish dinner and breakfast buffet with lots of interesting choices. Try the grilled fish or chicken at night and the omelet station and fresh squeezed juices in the morning. There are also local dishes for the culinary adventurous among you. movenpick.com/en/

Double Room of the Old Village Hotel

OLD VILLAGE HOTEL Another good choice, although it’s a mile from Petra, is the Old Village Hotel, which is on the outskirts of Wadi Musa and made of indigenous stones. Cleverly designed as a Bedouin village in the local architectural style, the Old Village is actually modern, having opened in 2015, with large rooms and luxurious amenities, including a spa, indoor pool, sauna, and Wi-Fi. oldvillageresort.com

CROWN PLAZA Sadly, no hotels overlook the ancient monuments, although the Crown Plaza, which is adjacent to the Mövenpick Hotel and The Visitors Center, has transformed an old cave dwelling into a bar, which is a fun spot to have a glass of Champagne. The Plaza also has the sole use of an area inside Petra called the Basin, a restaurant and expansive terrace half way up the mountain on the way to the Treasury. It’s the only full-service restaurant inside Petra and is perfect for lunch or tea while seeing the sights. ihg.com

PETRA’S LONG HISTORY, BRIEFLY The city prospered from the first century BCE as a center of trade for the Nabataean Empire, was conquered by the Romans in the first century AD, and was damaged by a dev-

astating earthquake in 363 AD. (We’re talking ancient here!) Trade routes changed, and by the 7th century, Petra was largely abandoned, known only to local Bedouins until 1812, when a Swiss explorer rediscovered the site. It had survived centuries of wind-blown abandonment miraculously intact, and today is Jordan’s most popular attraction, visited by people from around the world.

PETRA AT NIGHT AND IN THE MORNING If you’re going to stay in Petra overnight, be sure to check the schedule to see which nights they have the candlelight show. This evening ceremony features live music with native instruments, while hundreds of lighted candles cast the square in front of the Treasury in a magical glow. The crowd, seated on carpets, falls silent as a Bedouin musician begins to play haunting tunes. When the moon is in the night sky, it illuminates the magnificent façade, and along with the candles and the music, this magical and unforgettable experience is as much visual as it is aural. You’ll want to get up early because the monuments open at 6 a.m., and, as beautiful as Petra is at night, it is equally stunning in the morning. Sunrise is spectacular if you’re an early bird. And the rose stone changes color all day long as the sun moves in its arc. There is no bad time of day to gaze upon this wonder. Social Life

PETRA HIGHLIGHTS While there is a lot to see in Petra — the site is four times the size of Manhattan — I did the entire trip in 24 hours and it was well worth it. You can see the highlights in half a day. Although the hiking here is fabulous and highly recommended, you can save time by using horse-drawn carriages and donkeys to navigate the sometimes-steep terrain. I used a donkey to climb up and down the 800 steps to the Monastery; this bumpy ride is a death-defying adventure all by itself. I started at 8 a.m. and was done with all the main sites by noon, although, truly, you can easily stay in Petra for at least three days, especially if you like to hike and want to climb up the hills to the ancient ruins, which, miraculously, is still allowed. Although you will enjoy Petra at any age or level of fitness, you will appreciate it more fully if you are inclined to an active lifestyle.

HIRE A GUIDE Hire an official guide at the Visitors Center, as he knows all the right paths, and the history, and will keep you on schedule if you have a plane to catch. Be sure to keep your ticket as it saves you $80 on your way out of Jordan. If you stay two nights, there is no exit tax. Petra loves tourists, and they have begun coming back in increasing numbers over the last few SocialLifeMagazine.com

years. Most visitors come from Asia, but Americans are catching on now that the region has quieted down. I felt no negative energy in Jordan or Israel. Arch of Hadrian

THE SIQ Even entering the ancient city of Petra is magical, as you walk through the Siq, a narrow pathway lined in vertical walls of rock. This natural formation twists and turns for three quarters of a mile, varying between looming cliffs and sunlit plazas, heightening the sense of wonder as you finally come to the end and behold the magnificent hidden city. It is one of Petra’s main attractions, and traversing it feels like a holy experience.

The Siq

THE TREASURY This tomb carved high into the canyon wall is probably Petra’s most popular attraction, a must-see on your visit. The intricate craftsmanship of the façade is astonishing — more so considering it’s from the first century BCE. Experts say it was originally built as a tomb for the Nabataean king Aretas III, but earned the name “Treasury” from a story about an Egyptian pharaoh hiding his treasure in the urn high up on the façade. No treasure was ever found, but apparently the rumor stuck as the urn is pockmarked with rifle shot.

THE MONASTERY The Monastery, one of Petra’s legendary sites, sits high in the hills, accessible only by climbing an epically long, winding trail of steps — pegged at nearly a 1,000 — so yes, unless you’re a fitness buff, hire a donkey! Less ornate but much larger than the Treasury, the Monastery dates from the third century BCE, and was also presumed to have been built as a tomb. It was later used as a Christian chapel, and crosses were carved into the walls, hence the “Monastery” moniker.

ARTIFACTS AS SOUVENIRS If you collect ancient artifacts, ask your guide to take you to a shop that specializes in them. Like Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria, Jordan has so many ancient treasures that the locals sell some of the minor artifacts at reasonable prices. Tiny clay oil lamps, coins, urns, small sculptures of horses, and eating utensils are among the easiest to find and safest to buy. There is a famous old man named Omar who wields a tiny trowel Social Life

that he’s happy to show you and has a blanket laid out behind a little shop in the center of the site. He lives in Petra and has spent his life combing this architectural site that historians say has much more to give. Omar is happy to show you what’s real and what’s fake. The commercial shops have plenty of copies of coins, urns, and miniature horses if you prefer your souvenirs shiny and new. Generally speaking, it’s more expensive to copy these small items than to actually sell you an original. Be brave and take a chance: you can usually take home a small souvenir for around $150 to $300; in the official stores these items can run from $500 to $3K. Interestingly, archeologists say they have just scratched the surface of Petra and that other cities lie beneath.

EILAT, ISRAEL’S RED SEA RESORT You can fly in and out of Eilat, Israel, to get to Petra, and this resort on the Red Sea is definitely worth a visit while you’re in the area. In fact, Eilat ranked high on the New York Times’s 2019 list of 52 places to visit, coming in at No. 6, and it is the first-ever destination in Israel to make the annual list. One reason is the newly opened Ramon Airport’s capability for handling millions of passengers; direct flights from Tel Aviv and cities in Europe are available for the first time. Another is an influx of luxury hotels, like the Six Senses ShaSocialLifeMagazine.com

harut, that opened to meet demand when Israel hosted the Eurovision 2019 song contest in May of 2019.

CORAL REEFS AND DIVING Eilat’s many charms include diving in the pristine waters to see a magnificent coral reef to parasailing, water skiing, and windsurfing to just lounging on one of the many beaches along the city’s six miles of coastline. You can even swim with dolphins at Dolphin Reef, or, from the floating piers, just observe them up close along with tropical fish.

DOLPHIN REEF Dolphin Reef is remarkable in that the animals, a school of bottle-nosed dolphins, are treated in a respectful and sensitive way. They live in their natural habitat and have free access to the open sea should they choose to leave. You can observe them as they actually live; this is not a circus act. And there is plenty to do in addition to the beaches, including hiking in the Eilat Mountains, or in the 15,000-acre Timna Park, north of the city in the Negev Desert. The desert setting is strikingly beautiful, with magnificent geological formations and a lake — an oasis! — all surrounded by dramatically steep cliffs. There’s also tax-free shopping in Eilat, and plenty of restaurants, bars, and nightlife. tourismisrael.com

THE HARVEST INN, NAPA VALLEY RIPE FOR HARVEST By Anthony Michael

N

apa or Sonoma? No, we’re not taking sides on this one, mainly because it is a question of apples and oranges. Well, in this case, a more apt analogy might be red versus white. Okay, so maybe that was a groaner, but here are a few names that certainly elicit a heavenly sigh: Stag’s Leap. Conn Creek. Hess. And, the exuberant Darioush. Each of these, and dozens more, are the essence of, you guessed it, Napa, which, as the initiated know, is distinctly different from its sister valley to the west. Decidedly more organized and a tad more predictable in nearly every way, Napa is manna for those with a plan. And, planning is key, in particular when it comes to lodging because luxury accommodations are sadly few and far between. Our pick this season is Harvest Inn situated in the heart of St. Helena. This exceptional property has managed to achieve what few others can: a merge of upscale luxe and low-key charm. Sit by an in-suite fireplace. Soak in a private Jacuzzi. Stroll under redwood trees. Dine on farm-to-table creations. Relax poolside. And, of course, do what you really came here to do in the first place: savor wine and sweeping views of nearby vineyards. With 78 luxurious accommodations nestled into four uniquely crafted neighborhoods —The Fountain, The Vineyard, The Grove and The Manor — Harvest Inn’s features pulse with a relaxing vibe that seamlessly blends into the terrain. The distinctive mixing of heritage and modern style is seen in the richly stained wood, leaded glass panels, exterior stone, and Tudor stucco with timber framing — contributing to its timeless elegance. Among the property’s most alluring features is Harvest Table, a cozy wine-country kitchen featuring menus that highlight locally

sourced ingredients, including items from the resort’s on-site vegetable and herb garden. A 12-seat bar fronts the 110-seat restaurant, where smooth wood finishes are offset by the classic brickwork of an oversized fireplace, under the glow of abundant natural light. A brand new feature to the restaurant is a seasonal Garden Dinner Series led by the chief engineer, Jean Pierre Madrigal (Harvest Inn’s garden and landscape expert); the executive chef, Chris Kurth; and the director of food and beverage, Shawn Hyer. In conjunction with a winery partner, the evening consists of a multi-course meal with garden-fresh ingredients, featuring cocktail and wine pairings. Speaking of wine, Harvest Inn offers a compelling tasting experience. The unique wine menu is sorted based on distance from the winery to the resort, so guests can immediately decipher local choices. Additionally, Harvest Inn has a Sommelier’s Secrets program, designed to offer distinctive wines that normally would not be featured by the glass. These selections are poured tableside via the Coravin opener, which extracts wine from the bottle without removing the cork, to preserve the quality of the wine. Examples of wine options include the Mayacamas 2000 and 2013 cabernet sauvignon, and the Dominus 2001, 2005, and 2009 cabernet sauvignon, served in two- or five-ounce pours. The Harvest Inn is an oasis and, in many ways, a place to simply get lost — whether solo, as a duo, or even as a group. Nuptials here are common and exceptionally well executed. No matter: drink up Napa at the inn where every day is Harvest. Harvest Inn St. Helena harvestinn.com Social Life

BODEGA BAY LODGE SONOMA COAST ESCAPE By Anthony Michael

B

odega Bay, California, is not particularly well known, and this is exactly the characteristic that makes it a best-kept-secret destination. That said, any film buff is unwittingly familiar with this idyllic seaside refuge: it was the site for many of the location shots in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. Indeed, an (unusual) abundance of birds contributes a certain sense of energy to this otherwise sleepy fishing village. Bodega Bay is the type of place where one goes with a life partner — or gets married to one — and spends a few days communing with nature. Miles of languid Sonoma coastline, rolling hills, nearby vineyards, and a smattering of sporting options (among them fishing, golfing, running, and biking) provide everything one needs for a true, low-impact escape. In keeping with the remote environment, there is only one option for lodging, meetings, and weddings, and it is exceptional. You’d never know that Bodega Bay Lodge is a former motor inn, but after millions of dollars spent to bring the property up to a consistently No.1-rated lodge on the Sonoma coast, it has been transformed into something spectacular. Suites with fireplaces, luxurious bathrooms, exceptional linens, and striking ocean and bluff views contribute to a sense of welcome isolation. The unlimited green spaces are marked by wildflowers, stately trees, and a generously sized pool that are perched on a dramatic rise that seemingly rolls into the western horizon. A well-equipped gym cohabitates with a suitable spa offering limited — but expert — massage and other treatments.

Wanna get out? Go beachcombing for driftwood. Fly a kite. Scout for whales. Eat local crab and oysters at nearby food shacks. Discover boutique Russian Valley wineries and sip your way through handcrafted Sonoma County wines. Explore rugged hiking trails through untamed countryside. All trails lead back to the Lodge where, of particular note, attention is paid to gastronomy. The results are outstanding. Start in Drakes Fireside Lounge, which boasts wines exclusively from Sonoma County wineries and eight Sonoma County craft beers on draft. Make your way to Drakes Sonoma Coast, which celebrates the local bounty of Sonoma’s spectacular coastal region. The menu reflects the seasonal availability of local, sustainably-farmed produce, seafood, and meats. Having established close relationships with local organic family farmers, ranchers, fishermen, and artisanal cheese makers, the chef creates menus that are fresh, innovative, and ever-changing. Although only an hour’s drive from the Golden Gate Bridge, Bodega Bay Lodge is an unspoiled, unruffled, unplugged, and unexpected oasis. Bodega Bay Lodge bodegabaylodge.com Social Life

HANGAROA ECO VILLAGE & SPA ENDLESS DISCOVERY By Anthony Michael

T

here’s nothing quite as satisfying as finding yourself exploring an exotic locale that you had somehow convinced yourself was completely out of reach. A perfect example is Easter Island, the most remote place on Earth. It’s also home to the mystical Moai statues that you discovered in grade school textbooks and have always wanted to see up close. Well, you can. Your joy and wonder is intensified when you discover a luxury resort that will pamper you before and after your awe-inspiring days of exploration on this Chilean Island in the middle of the Pacific. Such is the case with Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa, one of only a couple of luxury resorts on the island. Staying here will enrich your life and, frankly, the more you discover at the resort and its surroundings, the more you want to continue discovering. HERE ARE THE TOP FIVE REASONS TO VISIT

1

Location. There isn’t enough space here to cover Easter Island itself, so we’ll stick to the property, which is in a privileged location. It’s five minutes from the airport and town center, and it plays host, daily, to the island’s best sunset views.

2

Architecture. A tribute to local culture, every aspect of the structure is based on respect for the environment, sustainability, and the natural surroundings. You may not want to leave the pool . . . SocialLifeMagazine.com

3

Rooms. Lodging at Hangaroa is focused on achieving the highest state of well-being. Noble material objects, including locallyconstructed clay tubs, punctuate the mid-century meets Polynesian aesthetic. The 78 rooms are huge!

4

Food. You’d think that being so remote would expose limitations. Not so. Authenticity is the name of the game here, with local fish, Polynesian spices, fruits, and vegetables. The resort has two restaurants and a to-die-for bar delight.

5

Excursions. One of the best aspects of luxury adventure properties is that they cater to your every whim, at your pace, and with an eye to your unique wants and needs. From exploring the local culture, which is centered around the Moais, to hikes and horseback riding to scuba-diving and crystal clear beaches, Hangaroa takes care of all the details. hangaroa.cl

While such a jaunt typically involves the Caribbean or something stateside, what we always really want is a trip across the pond. Problem is, the usual European destinations require the commitment of a solid week to ensure proper corporeal and mental calibration. Portugal, therefore, has become the best-kept secret for wanderlusters on a time-budget. Lisbon is a six- to seven-hour direct flight from the East Coast. With its stunning beaches, magical grottoes, activities galore, and an abundance of lodging options, the Algarve has become a favorite of the French, the British, and others for its beauty, safety, and proximity to home. A SOUTH FORK IN THE ROAD SOCIAL LIFE WINES, DINES, AND SLUMBERS IN SAG HARBOR By Karen Holly Berliner

S

ag Harbor is a paradox as it has as much of a charming, low-key village vibe as it does a vivacious and glamorous feel, neither undermining the other. Sag Harbor’s village streets showcase trendy boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and fine restaurants, which create a blending of the old and the new, with historic homes and modern mansions sharing the town.

Baron’s Cove

For a sublime lodging option, the Baron’s Cove Hotel offers sixty-seven appealing and lofted suites, with harbor or lush private-garden views, and dog-friendly accommodations, to boot, for tail-wagging tag-alongs! Situated on the harbor, a short walk from Main Street, Baron’s Cove offers an array of high-end amenities, including a heated saltwater pool, a tennis court, a state-of-the-art fitness studio, spa, and complimentary transport to the beach. For onsite meals, the restaurant at Baron’s Cove is a classic all-American dining room, lounge, and bar with a diverse menu that offers surf and turf, grilled hamburgers, fish, and signature lobster rolls. Added to these expected dishes are inventive choices like the burrata with roasted baby beets in a balsamic reduction or starters such as cove shrimp cocktail with cocktail sauce with lemon and bacon added, if you please. flageolet beans, and bread crumbs round out the menu nicely. The dish of Long Island beer-battered codfish and chips with fennel-arugula slaw is an East End favorite served here as well. Another Sag dining choice, The Beacon, owned by David Loewenberg and the chef Sam McCleland, brings waterfront dining to a new level, delivering farm-to-table cuisine with obvious know-how. The elevated dining room overlooks the cove, making it a prime spot for sunset viewing. Popular choice appetizers include steamed mussels “Beacon style” with garlic, white wine, lemon thyme, cream, and tomatoes, and pork belly pretzel buns with hoisin, pickle, creamy kholrabi slaw, and sriracha, to name a few. Entrées such as the halibut baked in parchment with sundried tomatoes, tatsoi, and toasted Israeli couscous or deliciously seasoned bouillabaisse with lobster tails, mussels, clams, shrimp, and scallops are consistently satisfying. A popular dessert to savor is the local rhubarb shortbread tart à la mode. Add craft beers, specialty cocktails, and an extensive local, continental and international wine list available by the glass or bottle and the dining is more than a meal; it’s an experience. Its sister restaurant, the Bell & SocialLifeMagazine.com

Anchor, in Sag Harbor as well, is another great choice executed by Loewenberg and McCleland. Enjoy signature appetizers, such as the steamed mussels “anchor style” with coconut milk, lemon grass, and Thai chiles and the ever-popular “old school” lobster garganelli, with corn, basil, and saffron cream. The brownie sundae with creamy coffee ice cream is the perfect ending to any meal served. A new spot in Sag Harbor is an extension of the popular Manhattan seafood restaurant Ed’s Lobster Bar. Named Lobster Bar East, the Sag site specializes in lobster rolls, fishplates, and raw bar; while the menu is about 75 percent identical to the flagship restaurant in SoHo, with classic lobster rolls, lobster meatballs, and New England clam chowder, Ed’s Lobster Bar East will have some new menu items such as fish sandwiches and lobster pizza. For an Italian cuisine option in Sag, the chef Luigi Tagliasacchi and his wife, Robin, offer Cappelletti, a restaurant and take-out. Cappelletti is a casual eating spot with some of the best homemade food on the East End. Focaccia sandwiches, creamy fettucine alfredo, eggplant parmesan, and much more

FOOD & WINE

A TOAST TO HEALTH By Sharon Roth

W

e all love bubbles — in our bath, in our sparkling water, in our hot tub. Most especially though, we love them in our beachside libations. Light, airy, and textural, bubbly adds a buoyant air to any East End moment, and the peach jewel tones of rosé champagne or prosecco glow with their own amber sunset that beautifully grace both table and photo. Bottom line? They are just more fun to drink. And believe it or not, good for you too . . . in healthy moderation. As Winston Churchill cautioned, “A single glass of champagne imparts a feeling of exhilaration. . . . A bottle produces a contrary effect.” (A case, we imagine, would be another saga entirely.) First, champagne, prosecco, cava — choose your country of choice. They are all fabulously delicious, but have subtle differences in flavor. All are lower in calories than other wines, admittedly, though, not by a great deal. But around 90 calories for a five-ounce glass is still better than 120 for regular wines. Make no mistake, those added 30 calories multiplied over a boozy afternoon at the beach will add up. And if you really want to watch the calories, Laurent Perrier’s Ultra Brut, beloved by Kate Moss, is a remarkable 65 calories a glass. Not bad at all. Next — and ironically — bubbly is actually good for your head. Research from Columbia University has shown that champagne contains proteins that are beneficial for short-term memory. A Reading University study in 2013 concluded that three glasses of bubbles per week can help improve memory — who knew champagne was also food for the mind! A glass or two of champagne has also been known to prevent the onset of dementia; a Pittsburgh study found that the risk was almost halved for those who drank moderate quantities. Bubbly is also a known mood booster, due to its magnesium, potassium, and zinc. And let’s not forget heart health; Yet another University of Reading study found that bubbly contains polyphenols, which are absorbed into the circulation system and improve blood flow. Drinking bubbly also raises nitric oxide levels in the blood, decreasing blood pressure and lowering the risk of blood clots. And finally, a 2009 Canadian study found that all wines — including your favorite variety of bubbly — can lower diabetes risk by 13 percent. Ok, 13 percent may sound meagre, but every little bit helps. So which one? Drinkers choice: In general, champagne is sharper and less sweet than prosecco, which is lighter and fruitier. Cava is drier than prosecco, but less complex than

champagne, which can have yeasty or biscuity notes that many love while some just don’t. In short, if you know your guests like to discuss and debate what you are sipping, champagne is your pick. But in most cases all three are crowd pleasers. Try them all to discover which one resonates best with your palate. Whichever one you choose, here’s an easy, delightful mixer for your next soirée: (Light and flavorful, Mionetto is an ideal choice, but feel free to use any bubbly.)

Sunset Beach Spritz 3 oz. Mionetto sparkling rosé 2 oz. Campari 1 oz. sparkling water (optional) Directions are simple: Pour all over ice, add grapefruit peel or other pretty garnish of choice on hand. Pair with long, lazy waterside afternoons, and toast to a healthy, bubbly summer 2019!

ZACH ERDEM SOCIAL & ENTERTAINMENT INFLUENCER OF THE HAMPTONS By Harry Brads

T

he restaurateur, nightclub owner, and hotelier Zach Erdem owns and manages two fine dining restaurants in the Hamptons, 75 Main and the newly opened Blu Mar; the nightclub AM Southampton; and the bespoke hotel Harpoon House — making him a major contributor not only to the town of Southampton’s commerce, but also to its food culture as well as social and entertainment scene. Recognized as one of Long Island’s best brunch spots by numerous outlets, including USA Today Travel’s 10best.com and theculturetrip.com, 75 Main has been a favorite among locals, visitors and celebrities alike for more than 30 years. Erdem has transformed the Hamptons summer dining favorite into a year-round restaurant and lounge. The expertly crafted menu, sophisticated décor, and the addition of post-dinner entertainment achieves the perfect balance between the classic style of the Hamptons and the allure of New York City nightlife. Erdem immigrated to the United States in 2002, and was quickly enamored by the Hamptons and began bartending where he first stopped to dine: 75 Main. In the years that followed, he traveled all over the world before returning to Southampton in 2010 to fulfill his dream of taking ownership of 75 Main — a dream that was born more than nine years earlier, when he first set foot on the East End.

75 MAIN The cuisine of the award-winning chef Mark Militello and stellar customer service has transformed 75 Main into a popular Hamptons year-round hotspot. Visiting the Southampton restaurant is an experience, one Erdem has finely crafted to ensure that you and your party will never forget. 75main.com

LEE KALT A MODERN LEONARDO By Jacob Puck

Lilikoi, Malinda, Wolfie, and Lee Kalt

I

t’s not hyperbole to refer to Lee Kalt as a renaissance man. He even shares the same April 15 birthday with Leonardo da Vinci. A little of this and a little of that all add up to something bigger than life and a career punctuated by a desire to innovate, lead by example, and always “plus one” your greatest achievements. Such is the case with Kalt (a.k.a. DJ Lee Kalt), who will be the celebrity jock at Social Life Magazine’s hottest parties of the season, including Polo Hamptons on June 29 and July 6 and St. Barth Hamptons on July 20. A global DJ/producer known for producing the music for Elon Musk’s iconic Tesla brand, for being a top real estate agent representing clients for some of the hottest manses in Westchester, and, now, for being a dad of two, Kalt takes it all in stride. This is Kalt’s 17th summer deejaying in the Hamptons.

“I actually feel like I slowed down a lot this year,” says Kalt, referencing the time he’s been spending with his growing family. “Lilikoi Dragon Kalt, our new baby girl, was born at home in March. It was all natural, no doctors, no hospitals,” says Kalt, adding that her name means passion fruit in Hawaiian. She joins big brother, Wolfie, who will be celebrating his birthday on the Fourth of July in the Hamptons. One gets the sense that, while Kalt is a dedicated family man, he’s also ready to remind the Hamptons what made him so famous in the first place: his unique sound that is now being discovered and devoured by a new generation of audiophiles. As we slip into the throes of summer and some Lee Kalt-covered events, we got the 911 on what’s on this maestro’s mind. Social Life

PROFILES

I know that everyone is anxious to hear what’s happening with your music, but one of the things front and center for you is your real estate business, The Kalt Team at Berkshire Hathaway. How does that factor into your busy life? I’d say it has really become more of a full-time thing for me at this point. There are so many families relocating to Westchester, where the lifestyle is better suited to family life, and I am definitely an expert at both Westchester and family life at this point! Of course, when you say full-time, you mean your day job, right? You’re still spinning? . . . Of course. But I’ve scaled back from over 100 gigs a year to maybe 25 or so. What, from your vantage point, makes those gigs extra special for your fans . . . especially those who look forward to the Social Life gigs? In general, the music is more relaxed, fun, down-tempo stuff. Techno has become so big again and so everywhere that I really like what I do better and feel like I stand out more now than ever before. I always want to bring something totally different from what everyone else is doing. It’s all music you know, but with a slant that you’d never expect. Rumor has it you’re re-releasing 2007’s “Special K,” your landmark record with Erick Morillo, which was deemed “essential” on Pete Tong’s BBC’s RADIO ONE show the week of July 4, 2007, almost 12 years ago to the day. What makes this one worthy of re-release? SocialLifeMagazine.com

It’s simply one of those once-in-a-lifetime, career-defining records. When it first came out, everyone from Tiesto to Swedish House Mafia was playing it. You know, it’s kind of funny. I imagine a lot of people reading the magazine today don’t even know who Swedish House Mafia is! But, it was a huge record 10 years ago when records were much bigger than they are now. I like to call it a 10-year anniversary, a couple of years after the fact! For the those who may not be familiar with Lee Kalt or “Special K,” define the style of this record? It was definitely Deep House, and there weren’t a lot of people in that style at the time. I like to think I was a pioneer. You claim to have not been super busy this winter, but you did play The Delano, which is still the Miami hotspot. The Florida Room! It was designed by Lenny Kravitz and is still one of the best clubs on South Beach. Yeah, I did a couple of nights this winter. That’s nothing to sneeze at! So, this summer – what else can fans look forward to? I can’t give away all the details quite yet, but I will say that my Social Life gigs will be off the hook. Get your tickets now! u Lee Kalt is available for events, public, private and charitable. For bookings email Malinda Carlton at malinda@housemusictv.com, or call 917.703.7463. u To listen to Lee Kalt right now, please visit soundcloud.com/leekalt

HEDGE CLUB MOVIE/TV PRODUCER BRINGS VEGAS TO THE HAMPTONS By Bill McCuddy

Michael Tadross Jr., Michael Viscuso

“Everything I do in life is a gamble, from movies to nightclubs to other businesses we invest in,” says Mike Tadross Jr. His latest bet is the Hedge Club on Tuckahoe Lane in Southampton. And he’s doubling down. “We brought in one of the best nightclub consultants in the country to design the club. It happens that I’m married to her,” he says with a laugh. “Michelle Ferraro Tadross. She designed it. Michelle is a pro, having designed clubs before, including Pur atop Cesaer’s Palace in Las Vegas, for example. The Los Angeles nightclub impresario Michael Viscuso also had a lot of input. Tadross says now, after his wife’s tweaks, he’s happy. “It combines the best of the venues I’ve ever been to. I like the European club scene. This is going to be a good meeting ground. I made it as close to a Vegas nightclub as you can get on the East Coast.” The moonlighting film and television producer has reached out to artists and turntable mixologists around the country. “We’re in talks with everyone from Snoop Dogg to 50 Cent to Ja Rule. And we’re meeting with some of the bigger deejays. Promoters are putting lists together, so we can really have a different vibe each weekend.” The Hedge Club is in the old AM space. But to say it looks nothing like the club that was there before is an understatement. “It’s 4,000 square feet, and we can get 500 people in there. It’s all graffiti and neon. You have to search around for little

secret things on the walls. I have sayings hidden everywhere.” And that’s just the inside. Outside, he says, gets even better. “We have a full terrace — it’s drop dead. Fun, chill, relaxing, and just a great vibe. It looks like The Beverly Hills Hotel and a little like The Ivy,” Tadross says, referencing two of his favorite places in L.A. “It’s tented, has green shrubbery running up the sides, is earthy looking with chandeliers and candles and wax everywhere. Black and white seat cushions. Really beautiful. I may keep the outside open in October.” The plan is to have the club open almost all year-round. He’s not just wagering on the Hamptons. “We’re going to do a bunch of these. One of the reasons we started here is because it’s New York, where we have the biggest critics and harshest judges. You know, if we can make it here . . .” Speaking of making it here, Tadross once ran Saracen in Wainscott. And he misses the restaurant business. “It’s Il Mulino now and doing phenomenally, but if I found the right location, I would bring Saracen back tomorrow.” Is he serious? Don’t bet against him.

BRENT FEINBERG TOOLS FOR BRINGING LIGHT TO YOUR LIFE By ElizaBeth Taylor

L

ife can pose obstacles and heartache that make living dayto-day feel like a task rather than a joyful blessing. But Brent Feinberg is an informative guide and talented author who can lead you to a smoother pathway of existence when yours becomes rocky. Brent possesses a natural gift for writing and an interest in alternative and holistic healing. At age 13, Brent became an advanced Reiki master. His striving to master this traditional form of Japanese healing resulted from the difficulties he experienced as a child. He witnessed his father being shot during a hijacking, and he was affected by his parents’ messy divorce. His teenage years were ones of emotional turmoil. But, a resilient will to go beyond the frustration and rage he felt made him break away and create a more positive lifestyle. He developed a yearning for a peaceful existence that inspired him to also become a certified BodyTalk practitioner, a yoga teacher, and a writer. He has written books and developed a powerful curriculum used in schools for students and teacher-training, using SEL (social emotional learning) that encompasses the lessons he had learned over the years. The more he worked and studied his craft, the more he wanted to live a life dedicated to uplifting people of all ages to live in harmony with others and the environment and, at the same time, to realize their full potential. The response to his books internationally was extraordinary, and this encouraged him to publish more in the series. “I am dedicated to expanding light and love for all beings through actions of love and compassion. Through coming to know my true self and the joy that lies within me, there is a knowing that we as human beings and all life have an intricate connection. Through divine love and compassion you can heal yourself and others. Being your true self is a gift unto the world. Together we can transform ourselves, filling the world with love, joy, and peace,” said Brent, a man who has become world-renowned for his writing, speaking, and workshops. The South African-based author of storybooks that work in tangent with guided adult workbooks and children’s activity books travels the planet sharing his methods. Dr. Deepak Chopra, the alternative medicine advocate, described Brent’s Freeing Freddie the Dream Weaver as “a truly enchanting story with deep universal truth that both children and adults will enjoy, helping them gain an understanding of how to let go of fear and be a part of a loving connected world.” SocialLifeMagazine.com

Brent Feinberg

Like an expert gym trainer who helps people build muscle, Brent works with individuals to give them tools for a peaceful and productive life, working from the inside. The methods he uses are guides that a person can use every day on their own at home or at work. Each of his lessons imparts the skills and tools a person can use to positively develop day by day. The goal is to help persons manifest the life they truly desire. Corporate clients such as PepsiCo and BB&T as well as individual students have given Brent’s books and techniques rave reviews. Brent’s mission is to empower people all over the word. His books and curricula are destined to change the world for the better. withlovefromfreddie.com

KELLY FISCHER

STRIDE ARTS

STREET ART SERIES

FOUNDER, ANGEL ZHANG

By Bennett Marcus

By Bennett Marcus

SCOPE NY & VOLTA BASEL Kelly Fischer showed her Street Art series at SCOPE NY; the Cultural Center in Mijas, in the province of Málaga, Spain; and Volta Basel, in Switzerland. Until August 31, she will have a solo exhibition at ANF Gallery in Memphis, and in September she will mount a show at the Swiss Consulate in NYC before heading to Art Miami in December. Fischer is represented by John C. Wang of HG Contemporary Art Center. hgcontemporaryart.com

STREET ART SERIES In her expressionist work, Fischer adds textures and colors to tell a story. In her latest pieces, she invites the spectactor to Bern, Switzerland, where she resides, and NYC. Her last visit to NYC was a revelation. “I stayed in the East Village, on Avenue B for a month. There was so much going on: the people, the children older people, street art, and lots of cars. Everything you can imagine on one street.”

THE SANTA FE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM The NY paintings are the biggest among Fischer’s Street Art series. That bustling scene spoke to her because she likes to have people in her work. “The circles in my street art represent people.” The hectic urban atmosphere also affects her use of color. “My Avenue B series is very complex artwork, because there’s a lot going on.” While Switzerland is her home, she now splits her time between Bern; NYC; and Memphis, Tennessee, where she grew up. Fischer has also published 12 children’s books. The Santa Fe Children’s Museum sponsored a special edition of her book, The Most Beautiful Color of All. Kelly Fischer kelly-fischer.com SocialLifeMagazine.com

Entrepreneur Angel Zhang is a longtime patron of the arts, an art collector. and a supporter of established and emerging artists in China and the USA. She relocated to NYC a decade ago, and during that time Zhang realized that many renowned Chinese artists were not known here, and many talented local artists were not properly represented. Knowing this, she founded Stride Arts, an exhibition and educational space in the heart of Manhattan at 1110 Second Avenue and 58th Street. Stride Arts is more than a traditional gallery; it offers a wide range of services to both artists and collectors. For artists, Stride Arts is a multifunctional platform, offering studio space, marketing, and strategic business advice, as well as promotion through unique programming. “We have created a different business model,” said Zhang.

THE INFUSION OF INK AND CLAY The space is 6,500 square feet, comprising a 3,500-squarefoot showroom, several smaller galleries, a video wall, and a stage where artists can give performances and talks. It can also be used for events like product launches or fashion shows. Currently, the award-winning Chinese artist Xiangdong Chen is having his solo show, The Infusion of Ink and Clay, through August 16.

SELLING & LEASING ART For collectors of all types — personal, business, or institutional — Stride Arts will negotiate the sale of artworks through its team of specialists who curate regularly rotated pieces available at affordable prices. Leasing art is not a new concept, Zhang notes, but she hopes to take it to new heights. Angel points to Rent the Runway, as a business model. stridearts.com
