PUBLISHER’S LETTER

August is a great time to be in the Hamptons. Summer is at its peak and the time is perfect to relax at the beach, or spend a day by the pool. I suggest unplugging from the digital world and let your real life unfold instead of spending your time on social media. Wellness seems to be on everybody’s mind nowadays. Biking, yoga and getting exercise is at the forefront of my mind on the weekend. Spending time in the Hamptons and getting fit will make everything feel better. With many wellness spots scattered all over the Hamptons, it’s easy to find the perfect place to work out, meditate, cycle, or take a yoga class. As the summer continues, so do the charity events. Recently, the Southampton Hospital had its annual charity gala and I believe it is one of the most worthwhile causes. If you missed it, you can still contribute at southamptonhospital.org Summer is going by quickly, and it’s time to spend some long weekends soaking it all up. We all deserve it! Enjoy August!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

How often do you think about the wildlife on the East End? Probably not often. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in your own world and forget that you are a part of something bigger than yourself, something extraordinary. As a species, we have mastered the land, which has desensitized many of us to the plight of other species that share this world. The act of building homes in the Hamptons also means we are encroaching on the nests and habitats of others. We have to understand and be patient with animals on our property as well as those roaming locally. It’s important to realize that animals feel love, pain, fear, and loyalty, just like we do. They have rich emotional lives that have been studied and documented. They have complicated social structures, crave friendship, and protect themselves as well as their families. Unfortunately, animals are sometimes powerless against us. We must contribute to the safety of wild animals on the East End and make sure that they are respected. There are many examples of animals that haven’t fared well because of human encroachment. We must be more careful and aware of the sentient beings around us. Thankfully, there is a lot you can do to help change come about. Please remember that you choose how to treat animals every time you get in your car, buy clothes, or eat a meal. If you want to be proactive about wildlife locally, you can volunteer for or donate to the Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays, the Southampton Animal Shelter, or ARF in East Hampton. No amount of time or money is too small.

his summer, the designer Lisa Jackson, whose fans include Vera Wang, Renée Zellweger, Allison Janney, Kelly Preston, Robin Wright, and John Travolta, returned to the Hamptons with LJ CROSS, her fine jewelry collection. Jackson debuted Diamonds for the Beach, at Jennifer Miller Jewelry, 28 Jobs Lane, Southampton. Jackson said of the gems, “My goal is to create a mood that evokes a casual relaxed attitude while conveying a sophisticated aesthetic. Think modern with a twist. Diamonds for the Beach is an extension of this philosophy. For this collection I worked in both rose and white gold with champagne and white diamonds. The overwhelming sensibility is refined and feminine. Even though I am working with real gemstones, these pieces are meant to be worn both day and night—not kept in a safe waiting to be brought out for formal occasions.

LJ CROSS Jackson’s Diamonds for the Beach collection challenges the way people look at jewelry. “People are just not that comfortable going outside the box and just wearing their jewelry and living with it,” says Lisa. While Jackson’s collection is made with precious materials, Jackson doesn’t want her customers to be shy with what they wear. “I see it with white t-shirts, jeans, into night with an organza slip dress, and over your favorite beach caftan. It’s all about just throwing it on and feeling comfortable and not treating it as precious. The entire line is sold at her flagship boutique LJ CROSS at 994 Madison Avenue, select Saks Fifth Avenue locations, and online at jcrossny.com.

THE MALE BAG UTILITY REIGNS By anthony MiChaEl

Separatec separatec.com Yes, it’s a weird name which you may not know, but Separatec underwear is perhaps one of the best on the market. It’s definitely a nofrills brand, but the fabric and fit are designed to achieve a wonderful thing: extreme comfort for you and the boys. Check out the website for a complete demo of Separatec’s dual pouch technology and how it helps you avoid unseemly adjustment, achieve freedom of movement (hint: special pouch), and sport an enhancing lift. While you’re there, get the boxer brief 7-pack. $59 EDITOR’S PICK

Bluebuck bluebuck.net

Maapilim maapilim.com

Not unlike Separatec, Bluebuck appeals to the basic needs of the guy in us. Decidedly masculine and low-key, they won’t turn heads in the locker room. In fact, why even cover up these undies? Eco-friendly, they are designed for the adventurous dude who just simply wants to be free, and they are perfectly appropriate as is for hanging by the lake with a good book, helming a sailboat, chopping wood, or climbing a mountain (not bad for an English brand). P.S. The navy stripes are fun. $25+

We stumbled upon this one, and we’re glad we did. With roots in Tel Aviv, this expansive line of understated men’s grooming essentials is inspired by the Great Sea, or, as is known to us Americans, the Mediterranean. There’s a ton to choose from, but our faves include the face cleanser and face moisturizer. Light and fragrant, a mix of jojoba, argan, and rosemary extracts cleanses, tones, and smooths. The moisturizer nourishes with a nice dose of aloe. Sublime. $19+ Social Life

Top Female Celebrity Trainer Award Anna Kaiser AKT

In 2016 and 2017, the website Greatist named Anna Kaiser one of the “100 Most Influential People in Health & Fitness.” The accolade makes a lot of sense for this founder and CEO of AKT, luxury fitness studios in New York City, East Hampton, and Connecticut. Her natural enthusiasm, terrific sense of humor, and reputation for results have brought her celebrity clients, including Kelly Ripa, Shakira, Karlie Kloss, Hilary Duff, and Sarah Jessica Parker. An international fitness authority, dancer, and choreographer, with a background in professional dance and sports medicine, Kaiser is a bit of a renaissance woman. She earned her BFA in dance from the University of California (cum laude). She studied kinesiology, sports medicine, and functional anatomy at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and later acquired teaching certificates in pre-and post-natal fitness, Pilates, TRX (total body resistance exercise), and CES (corrective exercise specialist). She is a personal trainer certified by NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine).

Top Male Celebrity Trainer Award Carlos Leon Belleon Body

Carlos Leon has made a name for himself as the co-founder of NYC’s Belleon, which features a wide range of fitness programs, including a signature 30-minute high-intensity group class that tones the body, strengthens muscles, and burns fat all in a single workout. Leon is a NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) and ACE-certified personal trainer and a marathon athlete trainer. His celebrity clients include Madonna and Ryan Seacrest. He instructs Belleon 2 circuit training, one-on-one training, and is a six-week boot camp transformation coach. Leon, with over 25 years of experience in a wide variety of sports—cycling, track marathons, boxing—is a well-rounded trainer who does it all. What truly sets Leon apart is his aptitude for connecting and truly understanding his clients’ motivations, strengths, weaknesses, and goals and always maintaining that connection throughout a training. Leon and his partners have created a fun and safe environment for group classes and one-on-one sessions for exercise and nutrition. Leon is also an accomplished actor who has appeared in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.

During the month of August how should we be taking care of our skin? The single most important thing we should be doing for our skin in the Hamptons is to use broad spectrum SPF that protects against both UVA and UVB. Find a product that you like and reapply every two hours. Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses! Editor Product Tip: Drunk Elephant’s Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 is a sheer sunscreen that delivers powerful broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. (Sephora, $34). Don’t forget to protect your lips: try the Fresh Sugar Sport Treatment Sunscreen SPF 30; it’s water-resistant and can also be used on the eye area and face (Sephora, $25). Should we be exfoliating the skin in the summer? Absolutely! Other than using SPF, exfoliation may be the next most important thing. During the summer, we typically sweat more and apply more sunscreen and makeup, both of which can clog pores. Sun exposure also stimulates the skin cells to reproduce more, yet they do not necessarily shed faster, hence emphasizing the need for proper exfoliation. Editor Product Tip: Exfoliate skin with the Brown Sugar Body Polish by Fresh, a summertime staple that will leave you with the intoxicating scent of sugar (Barneys New York, $67). EDITOR’S PICK

Give your skin extra nourishment with Herbivore’s Pink Clay Exfoliating Mask. It will draw out impurities without drying your skin (Nordstrom, $22). How can we prevent our skin from getting clogged pores? Try using non-comedogenic products as much as possible. But, no matter what, sun, sweat, and sunscreen contribute to clogged pores in the summer. I am a strong proponent for in-office, medical grade chemical peels—especially in the summer! It is a myth that they should not be done in the summer; for all of the above reasons, they are even that much more important in the summer. Depending on your skin, you can get them every two weeks instead of every month. Last, my Exfoliating and Hydrating Mask with five alpha hydroxyl acids can be used two times per week to help prevent clogged pores (In-office, $85). Can you treat sunspots during the summer? Best to prevent them and to use prescription fading creams, but after summer when the skin is less tan, I recommend either a laser for just the brown spots or the mixto fractional CO2 skin resurfacing laser that will ablate the brown spots and help diminish fine lines and wrinkles with its skin tightening effects as well. Editor Product Tip: The SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF is a vitamin C serum for the face that diminishes the appearance of discoloration (skinceuticals.com, $166)

ANGELO DAVID THE VERA WANG OF COUTURE HAIR By liZaBEth ZinDEl

A

ngelo David Pisacreta, the creative director of Angelo David salon, is one of the most coveted stylists and wig masters in New York City. He has a reputation for creating the “wow” factor with fully customized wigs, couture hair extensions, hairpieces, toppers, clip-ins, ponytails, fillers, and bangs— all of which can address specific thinning-hair challenges. Angelo has also found a niche within the wig-making industry, which is experiencing a resurgence. According to a New York Times article, the current demand is as high as it was in early 1970s, the heyday for wigs. All of Angelo’s wigs, extensions, and additions are made of 100% human hair and are designed onsite to match the client’s unique hair texture, type, and color. He has turned wig-making into an art form as well as a solution to a variety of hair-loss challenges. He also works closely with cancer survivors and women undergoing chemotherapy as well as clients who have hair loss from other causes. These causes may include genetics, pregnancy, medical issues, stress, unhealthy lifestyles, and mechanical hair stress caused by styling that pulls the hair too tight. He has a natural talent for connecting with his clients, who may be feeling shame or sadness because of their hair loss.

That’s the reason why he has such a special name for his consultation rooms. “I call them the dream rooms because they are where women come to talk about their dreams for their hair,” he says. After listening to clients’ particular needs (both men and women flock to the salon), Angelo works with each one to develop the perfect hair solution. To support the maintenance of healthy hair, Angelo has designed a range of products, including HairDetox vitamins, and a hairbrush line made specifically for use on hair extensions, volumizers, toppers, hair additions, and hairpieces. He has also created his own line of VOL volumizing shampoo, conditioning spray, and the newest addition, the Flex Brush, a wet and dry detangle brush for all hair types. “Hair extensions and hairpieces are part of our culture and our industry now,” he says. “They are no longer a secret. They are everyday hair wear.” Angelo David Salon 420 Madison Avenue angelodavid.com 212.883.6620 Social Life

LET’S GET SOMETHING STRAIGHT THIS SUMMER: YOUR TEETH By siEnna DavEnport But have they changed at all? Yes, and they are better than ever. Thanks to advances in technology, treatment options may include ceramic (tooth-colored) braces; lingual braces, which are placed behind the teeth; or clear aligner trays, which are similar to Invisalign. Even if you go with the traditional method, today’s standard metal braces are much smaller and sleeker than those of even a generation ago.

T

he shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and, when it comes to your teeth, “connecting the dental dots” calls for a true expert. This month we tapped into the goto guru for all things ortho, Dr. Jacquie Smiles, to set the record straight on why it’s so important to have an orthodontist mapping out your mouth. Any dentist is an expert in orthodontics, right? Absolutely not, but that is a common misconception. So, what is the difference? Orthodontists and dentists both know how to improve overall oral health, but they do it in different ways. A dentist is much more of a generalist, with a broad focus on teeth, gums, nerves, and jaw. An orthodontist is highly specialized and focuses on correcting bites, occlusion, and, most relevant to this article, straightening teeth. You should consult only an orthodontist for straightening teeth and correcting bites. Is it your expertise as an orthodontist that has propelled your career and your involvement with new products and procedures? Exactly. My training and expertise have led me to advance the practice of orthodontics in innovative ways that are truly focused on creating an unbelievable smile! Naturally, you are famous for Invisalign, but what about traditional braces—are they still important? Critically!

When I was a kid, teen-aged friends wore braces for what seemed like forever! Has this changed? Absolutely! Treatment time is now about a year less than it used to be because kids now get braces at a younger age, when their roots are more easily moved into position. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an evaluation by an orthodontist by age 7 at the latest ! In the past, adolescents started braces at 13 to 14 years old. Except for unusual cases, today’s kids are finished by then. Are you ever too old to have orthodontic treatment? Ha ha!! The older I get the more I say, ‘No you are never too old.’ I used to say that the best age was between 7 and 77, but now that doesn’t hold water because I have patients as young as 5, dozens of patients over 80, and one patient 94 years young. When someone in their 40s, 50s, or 60s comes in (thinking that they are too old for treatment) I smile and say, ‘You’re a spring chicken!’ Older patients who have taken care of their teeth their entire life often look better on X-ray than some 20-year-olds. Over the last 10 years I’ve changed my motto to: You’re never too young for an orthodontic consultation and never too old for orthodontic treatment! w Stay tuned for the next issue of Social Life for more Q&A

LOVE THE BRASS RING FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH By l.a. Dawson

ove and happiness, or their absence, have important consequences for our health. We can purposefully change our feelings about love in our life, and doing so can improve our health. Speaking positively about the circumstances surrounding love in our world can help change how we think about love. In other words, if love does not exist for you in this moment, try to expect it joyfully. If it does exist, it’s good to be grateful. If you feel hopeless, tell yourself that you feel hopeful. You may not feel it immediately, but if you continue to tell yourself that you are hopeful about love, there is a good chance that love will enter your life. Human touch and the lack of it were studied during World War II. Children who were orphaned as babies in England and received little physical touch because they were cared for by overworked nuns in make-shift orphanages often responded negatively to human touch. This unfortunately had a negative effect on the health of these children as well. Babies who were adopted in infancy and touched lovingly by their new parents grew up into better adjusted adults capable of giving and receiving love. Some people receive satisfaction and joy solely from giving love to others. Receiving love, compliments, and kindness are more difficult for them to accept. But accepting kindness and love from others helps the brain release neurotransmitter hormones that make a person feel joyful. Happiness thwarts the nervous system’s high alarm, fight or flight response. When this response is our

go-to as a daily protection from life’s negativity, we weaken our immune systems and become prone to illness. How do we replace a negative response with a positive one? Give love, fall in love, love thy neighbor, kiss your puppy, and cuddle your cat. Play with alpacas, empower a friend, listen to a stranger, and hug someone just for kindness’s sake. Give the brass ring of love to a friend and grab one for yourself, knowing that every loving moment in your life helps to keep you healthy . . . moment by moment, cell by cell. nna Avaliani, M.D., one of the best physician artists on Park Avenue, specializes in non-invasive cosmetic procedures. Physicians; celebrities from the worlds of fashion, sports, and entertainment; and corporate executives come to Dr. Avaliani for her exceptional experience, artistry, and attention to detail. These attributes combined with her warm and caring personality have brought many referrals to her established practice. Her state-of-the-art laser center is one of the few that has been honored with the prestigious Cynosure Center of Excellence Award. She was also named a RealSelf Top Doctor, an award given for her contribution to medicine and patient education.

PICOSURE FOCUS Dr. Avaliani is a true laser expert, offering the latest technology available on the market to treat virtually all skin concerns. One of her absolute favorite treatments is the revolutionary skin-rejuvenation treatment PicoSure Focus. This fast, effective treatment is the gold standard for skin rejuvenation. PicoSure treats dark spots, sun spots, age spots, acne scars, wrinkles, surgical scars, stretch marks, and more—in less than 15 minutes and with virtually no downtime. “Pico” derives from picosecond, which is one trillionth of a second. PicoSure delivers picosecond bursts of energy, not heat like other lasers, to gently target and more effectively eliminate problem areas without harming surrounding tissue. SocialLifeMagazine.com

PicoSure has trademarked the term Skin Cell Activation, which is a way of describing how PicoSure works. It literally activates cells to produce important proteins that signal other cells to begin a healing response. I’ve had this treatment myself. I trusted Dr. Avaliani, a boardcertified physician, to suggest the best treatment to remove sun spots from my face. My sun spots faded after a few weeks, and the ultra-short bursts of energy signaled my body to produce collagen and elastin for improved facial rejuvenation. The number of treatments can vary from one to several for wrinkling and tattoos. In my case, two treatments were necessary. What was the treatment like? I reclined as Dr. Avaliani explained carefully as she proceeded. I held a hose that flowed cold air as the laser passed over my face. It was easy to direct the soothing air wherever the laser went. No numbing was required. Dr. Avaliani encouraged me to speak up if I needed a break at any point, and she asked me how I was doing as we went along, but really I was fine. Because the bursts of energy are ultra-short, the feeling came and went literally one trillionth of a second at a time. Even though I had sun spots on every section of my face, and some fine lines above my lip, the entire treatment was over in just minutes. Dr. Avaliani applied sunscreen to my face, gave me simple, printed instructions, and said I could apply makeup immediately. For a few hours my cheeks were pinker than usual and my skin felt tight, but by late afternoon all pinkness and sensation had disappeared. There’s no real downtime—for anyone. Soon after the treatment, my sun spots temporarily darkened, and then I could see their pigment shattering before they began to fade away. My body’s healing response was underway. An unanticipated bonus for having sun spots on my nose is that PicoSure reduced the size of my pores during my first treatment. Expect the best of care from Dr. Avaliani’s practice—from a warm welcome to a caring follow-up call after receiving the best in cosmetic medicine. STEM CELL EXPERT DR. CHRISTOPHER CALAPAI By BEnnEtt MarCus to treat a host of disorders. The New York Daily News refers to him as “the stem cell guru.” Stem cell therapy has proven beneficial in treating a range of chronic conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, erectile dysfunction, arthritis, joint pain, stroke, heart and kidney failure, COPD, MS, and lupus. Dr. Calapai is ushering in a new era of stem cell therapy in the United States.

STEM CELL THERAPY EXPLAINED Stem cell therapy is a technique in which certain cells taken from your body fat are extracted and injected into tissues or the bloodstream, and these cells create healing for growth and repair of your body. The cells used in the therapy don’t have any “identity” or “blueprint.” “When your eye, say, makes new cells, they can only be eye cells. Your hair or heart cells can only divide into the realm of the same cell,” Dr. Calapai explains. “There is a special type of cell that exists in your fat and your bone marrow that can be used to go anywhere and take on the identity of anything else.”

TOP 10 ELIGIBLE BACHELOR LIST Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O., a board-certified family practitioner with specialties in stem cell treatments, anti-aging medicine, and nutritional guidance, is a man of many interests. For over 25 years, he has hosted two weekly call-in shows on WABC radio, offering health and medical advice on Saturdays from 8 to 9 a.m., and on Sundays from 6 to 7 p.m. In his off hours, Dr. Calapai, who is single, is something of a swashbuckler: piloting planes, practicing full-contact karate with other black belts, boating (he’s a member of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club), and driving racecars. At home, when he’s not playing with his German shepherd, Maximus, he enjoys entertaining. Dr. Calapai also makes homemade wine; he sent some to Pope Benedict XVI, who wrote a note of thanks for “the delicious wine.” The New York Post named Dr. Calapai one of the ten most eligible bachelors suitable to escort a separated Princess Diana during her trip to New York before her death.

A LEADER IN STEM CELL THERAPY Most important, Dr. Calapai has become a leader in the use of stem cell therapy in the United States, participating in clinical trials

Dr. Calapai is board-certified in anti-aging medicine, which constitutes a large part of his practice. His approach is a comprehensive medical and nutritional plan involving vitamins, minerals, diet, and exercise. Anti-aging medicine involves taking steps to get the body functioning at the level that it did years before by raising vitamin and mineral levels, which decreases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other conditions. “If we can get your hormone levels where they were ten to fifteen years ago, like thyroid DHEA and testosterone, your body will feel and function as it did,” Dr. Calapai reports. “We’re not going to make you live to age 150, but we can get you to function at far greater levels. We’ve reversed type-2 diabetes in people,” he added.

CELEBRITY CLIENTS Dr. Calapai was a medical consultant for the New York Rangers hockey team. TRY READING THIS WITHOUT YOUR READING GLASSES By Martin l. FoX, M.D., F.a.C.s.

Y

ou wake up in the morning and look at your phone. It’s a total blur. Your child presents you with his homework assignment for review. You can’t read it. At a dinner party you go to the ladies’ room to touch up your makeup. But the task is impossible because you’ve forgotten your readers. You stand at the lectern ready to present at your company’s annual meeting. In a panic you realize you can’t locate your reading glasses. Do any of these scenarios sound familiar? If so, you are one of over 3.5 million New Yorkers and over 110 million Americans who have lost the ability to read due to a condition called presbyopia that affects nearly all of us after the age of forty. The term presbyopia comes from the Greek, meaning old eyes. But for those of us who have acquired this malady, the definition is hardly appropriate. Today’s presbyope is vital, fit and at the top of their game. Up until very recently, the only remedy was to give in, kicking and screaming, to the idea that you now need a prescription for reading glasses. Many of us eventually end up with a multitude of those over-thecounter “cheaters” distributed throughout the house and our place of work because we just can’t function anymore without them. Or perhaps now you even need multifocal lenses either in glasses or contacts because you just can’t see well at any dis-

tance. Frustration has reigned—until now. Because in 2015 the FDA gave its approval to the very first of its kind solution for the reading problem— KAMRA—a safe and effective technology designed to restore reading vision in a painless 10-minute procedure The KAMRA corneal inlay is a microscopically thin, tiny opaque disk composed of an FDA-approved biocompatible plastic material with a 1.6 mm central opening. Its brilliant method of effect borrows from a simple principle of physics that teaches us that only focused rays of light can enter an eye through such a reduced aperture. When centered over the pupil of the eye, KAMRA restores reading vision at all distances without any loss of far vision. There have been over 8,000 KAMRA procedures performed in the U.S. since approval. More than 25,000 worldwide and collective studies continue to indicate a stellar track record of effectiveness and safety beyond what we as refractive surgeons could have dreamed. In our practice we have now placed over 250 KAMRA inlays and the life-changing results continue to amaze (see the link to our video testimonials below). For those individuals who have issues with both distance and near vision, KAMRA can be combined with iDesign custom LASIK—something we have named Pan-LASIK, and because of its mechanism of action, KAMRA never has to be changed or modified. And best of all, on the unlikely chance you feel that you don’t like the KAMRA effect—it is completely reversible! Martin L. DEFINING YOUR LOOK FOR SUMMER By staCEy GriFFith

I’ll share some things I chose to define my look for the summer of 2018.

1

Blue & Cream in East Hampton has clothes that define my summer intention of calm, clear, and effervescent. I bought some new clothes and donated some old ones to my friend’s son who likes tomboy chic. You can also sell your old clothes at therealdeal.com. Cash is nice too.

2

For my summer tan, I use the new Flesh line of makeup by Linda Wells. Her stick foundation comes in 40 colors, and the shade I chose balances my skin tone and makes my face feel light and ready for the day.

3

MDNA eye gels in the morning are a bestkept secret for not looking tired. And for a healthy glow, my skin thrives on protein, veggies, clean food. If I have no time between classes and life, I go for a Zing bar. Hands down the healthiest one I’ve found.

W

hat would you say if someone asked, “What is your look for summer?” Is it more about the way you dress? The way you feel under what you wear? The way you wear your makeup during summer? Or maybe you haven’t even thought about a summer look. But maybe you should. Summertime is when we should shine the most. We still have six weeks of official summer, and I want to challenge all of you to define yourself in ways you haven’t thought of before. For example, when you go to the studio to train (yes, you should be training like a banshee this summer), what are you wearing? How do you wear your hair? What type of easy make up

are you applying (if any) before and after? How strong is your post-workout outfit game? All of these things represent the way you’re feeling about yourself, and, believe me, presentation—even to yourself—is everything. Paying attention to the way you look can change your entire attitude toward everything you have going on throughout the day. Defining your look helps you create some intention in your life. It is a show of self respect, personal power, and self love. As simple as this sounds, it takes effort, and people appreciate seeing effort, and it is a major statement and insight into your current state of well-being. You should take pride in who you are!

4

SoulCycle in Bridgehampton has collaborations with FILA/cotton, citizen/aviator nation, NSF, and many more this summer. It has a full retail store with every style of après workout gear you could imagine.

5

Valery Joseph Salon in BH can take care of your hairstyle and color needs. Go blonde. Highlights pop your eyes. Cut it short!

6

Walk on the beach in the early morning, and think about what you are grateful for. Connect to the energy of the Hamptons. It’s powerful.

7

Go to bed early. Sleep is the most important, and most underrated, thing we do. I have made sleep and napping a priority in my life! Like No. 1.

20-MINUTE BEACH WORKOUT By JosEy GrEEnwEll

WARM-UP: Important and necessary to increase blood flow and oxygen to the muscles. It’ll help increase your starting energy as well as decrease any potential risk of injury. The weather may be hot, but you still need to start with a sweat! 20 reps of each (both sides = one rep): • Sand jump jacks • High knees • Squats • Downward dog to upward dog • Front lunges • Elbow plank hip dips

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING WORKOUT: Meant to provide a full-body approach to your workout. The sprints cover your anaerobic zone while body-weight exercises hit major muscle groups, all while keeping your heart rate up! Choose two points on the beach that are 40 to 50 yards apart. You’ll sprint between these points after each exercise. For extra resistance try doing the workout where the water hits the sand.

G

et-fit tips and programs are promoted all during the winter, and they hit the newsstands and blogs hard in early spring. But if you’re not as fit as you want to be by now, why not use the rest of the summer to work on toning and strengthening. I never want to lose any time soaking up sun when the weather’s nice, so working out on the beach is my go-to when I’m away from my gym and still need a quick burst of cardio or strength training. Here’s a quick 20-minute beach workout for you to try first thing when hitting the sand. Aim for getting it in before beach-goers arrive, so the rest of your day can be much deserved rest and relaxation. The plan combines both strength and cardio fitness training performed with just your own body weight!

BROWS, LASHES & BEARDS CAN BE TRANSPLANTED TOO! PUTTING YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD By JaCoB puCK

K

eith R. Durante, M.D., a highly trained, board-certified general surgeon, parlayed an already esteemed career as a vascular surgeon into becoming one of the most renowned practitioners of hair transplantation.

“What I do is permanent. It’s a change that lasts a lifetime. It’s a beautiful, natural look!”

“The satisfaction of improving someone’s self-image is what truly moves me, and I believe that my skill-set is a gift that allows me to really take this area of facial aesthetics to the next level,” says Dr. Durante. Most people think hair transplants are only for the scalp, but Dr. Durante has expanded this surgical art form to replace hair elsewhere. We’ve previously covered hair transplants and your philanthropy. But I know you specialize in replacing hair any place a person wants. What are the top three requests. After the scalp, patients definitely seek eyebrows, eyelashes, and even beards . . . for men, of course! What is the most common? That’s easy: eyebrows. Is it true you’re known for your eyebrow “Cara Package.” Yes! That got a lot of press after I published an article in Vogue about the trend for lush eyebrows. Many celebrities now have thicker eyebrows, and they are stunning. This is a look that more and more women are adopting. The truth is, it’s so much more than a trend because the eyebrows say more about a person than just about any other feature. They frame the face and annunciate all facial expressions. They show emotion, especially happiness. They highlight the eyes, which serve as a window to the soul. Why don’t women just let their own brows grow in. Many can’t just let their brows grow in. Some brows are naturally thin; others are thin, or worse, from medical conditions. Then there are woman who have over-waxed and over-tweezed their brows to the point where they can no longer grow. Now, every day I hear from a woman who would like fuller brows.

Keith R. Durante, M.D., F.A.C.S.

For something so important, it sounds like this would be a big commitment and very time consuming. Not at all. In fact, it’s a very easy procedure. First, we outline the desired eyebrows, or the patient can have her make-up artist do it for me, so we have a customized blueprint. Then, I remove individual hairs from just behind the ear, using the automatic follicular device, which is painless. Then I implant the hairs, which is also painless. Social Life

PRE-OP WITH TATTOOING

POST-OP IMMEDIATE RESULTS

Does it take long? Generally it takes about 90 minutes for each brow. Post-operatively, all I recommend is sunglasses and a short wait before washing the brows. Transplanted hairs continue to grow, but women tend to love that because they have even more flexibility when shaping their brows. And remember, this is permanent: there’s no need for microneedling, gel, tattooing—all the tedious and repetitive fussing. Is the process similar for eyelashes? The procedure is somewhat different, but it’s also easy and painless. As with brows, I use a number of longer hairs from behind the ears, but I implant them in a different way. I thread each hair, which I then trim to the desired length. Why shouldn’t people just go with fake lashes? Because they are so destructive. Every time you remove fake eyelashes, you risk removing real lashes from the root, too. You are creating your own problem. Once there is nothing to stick the fake lashes to, you’re often out of luck. What I do is permanent. It’s a change that lasts a lifetime. It’s a beautiful, natural look! They never have to be replaced? No! Once we do it, it’s done. I like to say one and done. And that goes for the brows, too. This is because what I’m transplanting is not just a hair; it’s a hair attached to its bulb, the hair root. Therefore, the life cycle for each transplanted hair continues indefinitely. Let’s talk about the guys. What’s hot for them? The current makeup trend for men is now moving to a more permanent solution to accentuate their brows and eyelashes. They choose brow and lash transplants when they want a permanent yet completely natural look. Also I see many men who want a better beard. As you probably know, the beard phenomenon isn’t going away. In fact, more and SocialLifeMagazine.com

more men are deciding to emphasize their appearance with facial hair. However, when they start to grow out a beard for the first time, they’re disappointed if they discover noticeable bare spots. That must be ego bruising. It certainly can be. I recently had a patient who was able to grow a beautiful beard, but he had no sideburns. And then there are men who attempt to extend a mustache into a goatee, but discover a gap between where the mustache ends and the goatee starts. I’ve successfully helped these guys and others with similar requests. Is this an easy transplant area? Very. In fact, it’s even easier than some other procedures. And this is a one and done, too? Everything I do is a one and done! Guys who have beard transplants are trimming them within a matter of weeks and still trimming years later. What sets you apart in all these procedures? Several things. My skill and comfort with micro-surgery is not necessarily matched by others who have had different surgical training. Also, artistry is a critical aspect of what I do. I am skilled in making aesthetic choices. All scalp and facial transplants are about framing the face. I understand the nuances of a person’s appearance. I give patients the look they want to present and make them feel wonderful.

RACHEL’S RADAR 5 QUESTIONS FOR QUICKFIX By raChEl hEllEr proprietary unique infusions and utilize an evidence-based approach, something that has been missing in this field.

3

I’ve always been scared of needles. Does this treatment hurt? We work with our patients to make sure that they feel comfortable. Our nurses and nurse practitioners are highly skilled, predominantly emergency room and oncology infusion nurses, all with ICU training. We utilize pediatric equipment where appropriate, and can offer lidocaine ointment prior to beginning. The goal of all of our treatments is to make patients feel better in every way.

Q

uickFix is a mobile IV-infusion service now in the Hamptons. A large selection of IV’s can treat hangovers, food poisoning, viral symptoms, and lethargy or give a boost to metabolism, beauty, and general well-being. I recently ran into friends at Surf Lodge who were speaking highly about QuickFix, a service they had tried earlier that day. The week before at a Gurney’s brunch, I overheard girls who were in town for a bachelorette party raving about their QuickFix beauty infusions. When I saw a cute billboard ad for QuickFix, I decided to find out more, so I interviewed one of the doctors who started QuickFix.

1 Rachel Heller, Photography by Harris Davey Jr.

What is QuickFix and why was it started? QuickFix is a mobile medical service that can bring highquality IV infusions to you in the comfort of your own home or hotel room. We started this service as a result of seeing issues with similar types of services, seeing the lack of medical science being employed in this field, and with the feeling that patients deserve better.

2

What makes your service better than the others? We don’t really compare ourselves or our achievements in medicine to other physicians or services. Our concern is delivering the best and safest care possible. We are very proud of the team we have assembled and have input from anesthesiologists, oncologists, interventional radiologists, emergency room physicians, and gynecologists, all of whom have extremely impressive medical credentials. We have developed SocialLifeMagazine.com

4

Why should someone get an IV versus taking medications? Vitamins, medications, and fluids infused into the bloodstream have 100% bio-availability, higher potency, and a rapid onset of action. Ingested medicines or nutrients have to be broken down by the digestive system, and fluids have to be absorbed, with only a small percentage of resultant availability. For patients suffering with an acute migraine, for example, their options are to take medications and hope that they give relief or sometimes to make an emergency room visit. We can help people avoid this, and give the same type of treatment to people in their homes. We are very excited about this component of the company, and are confident that our migraine treatment is the best available anywhere.

5

Are QuickFix doctors planning to stop practicing at prestigious hospitals and do this full time? Never. The common thread among our doctors is that we love practicing high-quality medicine. Our doctors have achieved honors in medical school, trained and worked at top institutions, and have been published extensively in top peer-reviewed medical journals, such as JAMA Oncology, JVIR, and Cell. We teach medical students, residents, and fellows, and give lectures around the world. Medicine is our passion, and QuickFix is a subset of this. QuickFix will be launching full time in Manhattan in the fall and will be an additional outlet for us to practice medicine. QuickFix quickfix.menu

LUXURY SKINCARE TAILOR-MADE FOR YOU By siEnna DavEnport

U

niverskin is a revolutionary skincare company that tailor-makes skincare for each individual. The brand was developed in 2006 by a group of medical and science professionals, including chemists, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, skin pathologists, pharmacists, and a Nobel Laureate biologist. The multi-disciplinary team worked together in a laboratory in Nice, France, with the intent of inventing a skincare line that would be truly customizable. “Since I am French, I love thinking about everything in terms of food,” said the Universkin CEO Harry Arampatzis. “Using a food analogy: the cosmetic industry offers mostly canned food with a 3-year shelf life and a one-size-fits-all approach. Universkin is the first ‘restaurant’ using fresh delicious ingredients, prepared on the spot by a medical provider, or ‘chef,’ who considers what you like to eat and what your body needs.” Conventional skincare brands target consumer groups. Each product they manufacture must attract and sell to the largest possible population. “We, however, have a completely different philosophy,” said Arampatzis. “Our value proposition is so simple. That’s what makes it revolutionary. One patient + one doctor = one formula.” Universkin has the ability to create millions of different formulas. “We offer 19 medical-grade active ingredients in a pure powder form to be integrated in a super serum that contains hyaluronic acid, omega 3, and peptides that soothe and rebalance the skin,” said Arampatzis. After filling out a skin questionnaire in a clinic or online, a patient gets matched with their unique Universkin formula. “Our physicians then design and dispense on-the-spot, tailormade skincare formulations. Our skincare is created just for your skin, in front of you, offering a fresh product. We guarantee astonishing results for your skin, without the harshness of preservatives and unnecessary chemicals,” said Arampatzis. It takes a high level of sophistication and technology to make the process of determining each patient’s formula look easy. “Universkin had to develop diagnosis algorithms to enhance our medical providers with a super dermatologist brain. We are the first and only company with patented technologies that enable instant dispersion of medical-grade actives in a serum vector,” said Arampatzis. Universkin offers clients a wide range of benefits in a short time. “It will take an hour to get rid of swelling; a week to deal with dilated pores, seborrhea or pimples; two to six weeks for redness; and six to twelve weeks for wrinkles or dark spots,” said Arampatzis. SocialLifeMagazine.com

The innovative brand already has a proof of concept in 35 countries, including Canada. They just recently launched in the United States at Trifecta Med Spa. “The professionalism of the Trifecta Med Spa team as well as their willingness to bring the best products to their patients convinced us to start this collaboration. We are confident that our products are in the best hands,” said Arampatzis. Universkin universkin.com TrifectaSpa 800.757.4026 trifectamedspanyc.com

DR . STEPHEN T. GREENBERG WHAT’S NEW ON THE COSMETIC SURGERY HORIZON By Fallon harrinGton Now more than ever before, we can count on the most innovative technology to achieve the best possible results. Award-winning celebrity plastic surgeon Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., F.A.C.S., acknowledges that we are confronted by the media with alternatives to improve our appearance, regain our youth, and tone our bodies. The reality is that maintaining a youthful look requires attention to the basics—adequate sleep, plenty of water, diet, and exercise. Even with our best efforts, the quest for beauty may need some help.

An amazing advancement used today is Cellulaze, a treatment to reduce cellulite and reveal a smoother appearance without surgery. The treatment reduces cellulite by releasing the constrictive bands that cause the skin to dimple, resulting in the “cottage cheese” effect. “We treat multiple areas during a single procedure with lasting results,” says Dr. Greenberg. Another groundbreaking procedure is Neograft. This hair restoration procedure is painless and takes just a few hours to complete. Neograft provides a hairline that looks and functions naturally. The procedure is effective for both men and women, and most patients experience minimal or even no downtime. Another innovative treatment is Viveve. This is an exciting vaginal treatment to restore a youthful aesthetic and improve functionality for a woman’s intimacy. Viveve uses clinically-proven radiofrequency to stimulate the production of collagen. Viveve can be performed alone or with labiaplasty for improved vaginal symmetry. These are among a few cutting-edge options available at Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery. Find out what is right for you. WELLNESS IS NOT ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL By Dr. Cynthia BarrEtt, pt, Dpt, CsCs, Cns

ach individual has a unique physical and chemical makeup. The latest research indicates our microbiome determines our overall health and well-being. This is why conventional diets often fail for so many well-intentioned people. Studies show the bacteria in our gut plays a major role in the function of our body and our mind. A healthy gut leads to a healthy mind. Understanding this connection—and understanding ourselves—can heal on many levels.

It is really simple: everyone is different. Wellness Couture analyzes what it takes to make each individual healthy: • First, we EVALUATE a person’s unique physiology, chemical make-up, and gut microbiome by running a battery of tests. We analyze genetics, food sensitivities, and allergies, micronutrition deficiencies, neurotransmitter and hormonal imbalances, cardiovascular fitness, body fat composition, lean muscle mass, and bone density. We analyze the patient’s complete medical history (from birth to present) and conduct a thorough lifestyle analysis. • We then FORMULATE a nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle plan specific to that person’s unique physiology and predispositions. It is the opposite of a one-size-fits-all approach. We also formulate custom supplements when necessary, filling in our patient’s unique nutritional gaps. • We EXECUTE the plan from six months to one year (this is a lifestyle change), track progress every two weeks, and adjust the plan as necessary whenever there are challenges. We have seen results across all ages and demographics, including business professionals, stay-at-home moms, or children with sensory and developmental delays: • A middle-aged businessman who thought he needed to lose only 8 pounds lost 38 pounds and 6 inches off his waist. • A woman in her 30s who had smoked for 10 years was able to stop. • A stay-at-home mom in her 40s reported more energy after improving her diet and taking the natural custom supplements we developed specifically for her. • The mother of a 10-month old child weaned her baby off a protonpump inhibitor and saw him improve from “failing to thrive” to finally absorbing his food and growing. He is now on the growth charts with his peers and thriving. • A former college athlete regained his cardio fitness and cut his 1-mile running time from 12 minutes to 7. He’s now in the best shape of his life. • An 18-year-old woman no longer suffers from chronic headaches after discovering her food sensitivities and changing her diet. When we eat well, we feel good. When we feel good, we thrive. Your health is your wealth. If you are interested in learning more, we would love to help you start your journey to wellness.

INTO THE BEAUTIFUL WILD

BETH STERN By liZaBEth ZinDEl photoGraphy By howarD stErn

It all began with a seagull. Beth Ostrosky Stern and her husband, Howard Stern, stumbled upon an injured bird while walking on their favorite beach. “We knew about The Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays so we called them immediately. A volunteer showed up right away to transport the bird to the center for rehabilitation,” Beth said. A few weeks later, Beth and Howard received a phone call from the Wildlife Center that the bird had healed. They were able to pick him up and release him. “We drove to the center and were given a tour of the facility and saw firsthand the incredible work they do,” Beth said. Beth was so inspired by her visit that she decided to become trained in wildlife transport. “I am now one of the volunteers called upon when there is an animal in need in my area,” Beth said. One day she was called to rescue another seagull that was tangled in fishing wire and severely dehydrated. “I used my rescue kit: gloves, blanket, and a plastic box with air holes. After I placed him in the box, we transported him to the center and a month later I was able to release him. Watching him soar over the ocean where we found him was such an incredible feeling. There is a gull who visits the roof of our house daily, and I like to believe that it’s him!” The center rescues a diverse assortment of animals, including birds, turtles, rabbits, deer, swans, and ducks. “Pretty much all of the glorious wildlife found here in the Hamptons,” Beth said. She recalled one particular experience with The Wildlife Rescue Center that touched her heart. One day Beth and Howard found a hurt deer lying in their yard. Three volunteers transported the SocialLifeMagazine.com

creature back to the center. “Once there, they realized she was a lactating doe. I spent hours trying to find her babies but was relieved to learn that another doe would find and take care of another deer’s orphaned babies,” Beth said. The Wildlife Rescue Center determined from the doe’s injuries that she had been hit by a car. “Her spinal cord was injured so they had to do the humane thing and euthanize her. But, there was an orphaned fawn at the center who was not eating and they put the fawn near our lactating mama and the baby was nurtured back to health for a few days while they kept the doe comfortable. I feel that was her purpose. It was so sad and also so incredibly beautiful to witness,” said Beth. For her photo shoot for Social Life this summer, Beth chose to be photographed by Howard, surrounded by some of the beautiful animals that the Wildlife Rescue Center saves every single day. “The center deserves to be recognized and supported, and I don’t think everyone who lives out here is aware of them. It is a very important place, and Howard and I are so passionate about what they do,” Beth said. At the charity’s yearly summer events, Beth gets to hold some of the animals so she already knew the other “models” in the shoot. “It was so nice seeing them again!” Beth said. The birds she is pictured with have been permanently injured and cannot be released to the wild. Beth was able to hold them under permit from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to be used as education. “We had such a beautiful day shooting there. We love hearing the animals’ stories and how well they are healing. It’s hard to get me to leave once I’m there!” Beth said.

If you are interested in getting involved at the The Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays, you can visit its website and look for volunteer opportunities. If you program the rescue center’s number (631.728.9453) into your phone, you can easily call them if you see a hurt or sick animal. “Please don’t walk by and ignore. They need our help. The center operates on donations. Please think of them when you are enjoying the wildlife outside your window,” Beth said. “They are saving these magnificent creatures every single day.” Beth has always been an animal lover, but a turning point in her life happened when her beloved bulldog, Bianca, passed away. That is when she decided to dedicate her life to helping felines. She began volunteering at North Shore Animal League America. “I would see so many cats in cages and it broke my heart. That was the moment I decided to spearhead a 15,000-square-foot expansion onto North Shore Animal League America’s existing shelter. The organization offers a cage-free environment for all the cats that stay there. We’ve raised over eight million dollars, and we are in the middle of the renovation now. It’s so exciting! It should be up and running by this time next year,” Beth said. Beth and Howard also foster cats in their home in Southampton. They’ve had over 700 cats or kittens come through their home over the last five years and have found them all loving homes. Currently they live with four resident cats and over twenty foster ones. “I always had a fantasy of living a life helping animals. I feel so fortunate to be living my dream,” Beth said. This summer, all of their foster rooms are full. “Someone found a new mama and her six babies in the backyard of a Manhattan church and contacted us. Mama Summer and her six babies now take up one of my foster rooms. We have twelve other orphaned kittens in the other room. It’s kitten season and every day I am responding to calls about kittens in need,” Beth said. Another one of their current house guests is Maserati, a special kitten they found in a dumpster at a Maserati dealership. “We are going to do his adoption on the upcoming Hallmark Channel’s Kitten Bowl that I host every year,” Beth said. This is the sixth year in a row that Beth will be hosting the Kitten Bowl that airs every year on Super Bowl Sunday. “I am literally on an indoor playing field with over 100 adoptable kittens from North Shore Animal League America playing all over me!” Beth said.

Spending so much time with cats has taught Beth about their emotional lives. “People often think cats are aloof and independent. Not at all the case. They are lovers and such amazing companion pets. They all have such different personalities. The beauty of adopting from a shelter is that you can ask the adoption counselors and staff at rescues to match you with a personality that would fit best with you and your family,” Beth said. Beth keeps an active Instagram account that is filled with photos of her with darling foster cats. She currently has over 430K followers. “I love how passionate my Instagram followers are. Most of my foster kittens’ adopters make Instagram accounts for my babies after they are adopted! One of my blind former fosters has over 80,000 followers! Blossom is a superstar!” Another superstar is Buddy, the cat Beth wrote about in her second children’s book, Yoda Gets a Buddy, the follow-up to her debut picture book, Yoda, The Story of a Cat and His Kittens. “People seem to be enjoying following the cats’ stories from the moment they’re rescued to their forever family day,” Beth said. Howard is Beth’s help in providing love and support to the foster cats. “He is my partner. He supports everything I do. He helps me socialize the kittens and he offers the financial Social Life

support so I’m able to take on special cases that need extensive surgeries or special veterinary hospitalization and treatment,” Beth said. She currently has five kittens at Long Island Veterinary Specialists and is waiting for them to get better so they can come to the foster room at her house. Beth is drawn to Howard because he is an animal lover. “He’s compassionate and kind. And the most generous man I know. And the smartest. And I find him to be incredibly handsome!” Beth said. The first night they met, she knew she was falling in love with him. “I knew he was my forever,” Beth said. If you asked her for love advice on a happy marriage, she would say, “Listen, talk, and make sure you appreciate each other every second of the day.” Everyday rituals for the duo include morning coffee with the fosters and playing with their resident cats. “Howard and I spend every morning having our coffee and reading the papers in the foster room. It is quite adorable that litter after litter after litter of kittens all love the same thing: Howard’s hair! It’s heaven for kittens to play with!” Beth said. Five years ago when Howard and Beth received their first foster litter, Howard formed a strong attachment to a little male tabby named Tarzan. “Howard still speaks about him and

how we should have kept him. I remember he followed Howard everywhere. It was the cutest thing! However, Tarzan is thriving in his forever home. I check up on all of my former fosters. All 700!” Beth said. What does it feel like to hand over a beloved foster cat to a permanent home? “It is so bittersweet,” Beth said. “I do end up feeling like a piece of me is handed over as well, so I immediately get more fosters to focus on filling that hole in my heart. But I am so grateful and happy for my babies when they are adopted. It means my work is done. But there’s always another in need.” Photography by Howard Stern Hair and Makeup by Erin McNeill Thank you to Jim & Cheryl McDougall and Ginnie Frati from the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays. We are so pleased to honor Narciso this year. He is truly a designer’s designer, someone who personally creates beautiful clothes for modern women. The year 2018 also marks his 20th year in business. In June he received the CFDA [Council of Fashion Designers of America] Lifetime Achievement Award, having already won Best Designer twice from them.

For example, when the HVAC was in need of repair in our costume storage area, the renovation was paid for in part by the contributions of the members of the Couture Council. The Couture Council Award Luncheon has become known as the unofficial start of New York Fashion Week. To what do you attribute the significance of this extraordinary event? I would attribute it to the fact that everyone in New York loves fashion. This is a very fashion-forward city. Ever since we honored Alber Elbaz in 2007, we have held the luncheon immediately after Labor Day. It was Alber who insisted that we do this. Initially we held the luncheon in October, and we thought Alber was mistaken to insist that we hold it in the beginning of September. However, the early September date for the luncheon turned out to be extraordinarily popular. The Couture Council luncheon is now the first big social event of the fall. The luncheon kicks off New York Fashion Week. SocialLifeMagazine.com

The Couture Council Award Luncheon is now in its 13th year. It is held at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. How has the event changed over the years? Obviously, the honoree changes every year! Past honorees have included Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, and Oscar de la Renta. Each year the award luncheon supports a different set of exhibitions. This year, for example, it will help to support the exhibition Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color. This exhibition opens to the public on September 7. The opening reception for Couture Council members will be held on September 6. Pink will feature 300 years of pink fashion, from the 18th century to the present. The funds raised from the Couture Council luncheon enable us to bring in the best pink clothing from around the world. When we borrow from museums, we also need to bring in the conservators. We need to hire a designer, design a set, and then build the set. We also need to produce a book and create all kinds of graphics and videos. And this is just one of the four exhibitions we do every year. What does it mean to you to be able to engage with the Couture Council to advance the knowledge of fashion? Members of the Couture Council tend to be dedicated fashion lovers. They understand our mission, which is to educate and inspire diverse audiences through exhibitions and programs that advance the knowledge of fashion. The members of the Couture Council are entitled to special tours of new exhibitions. We also have private events where we allow our members to view the fashions created by a specific designer. For example, we might have a private event where our entire collection of Alexander McQueen pieces are brought into a classroom. Couture Council members can then view them close-up with a curator. We also arrange visits to designers’ ateliers and/or boutiques, and often interview the designer. This fall we will be looking at the concept Social Life

ABOUT VALERIE STEELE Valerie Steele (Ph.D., Yale University) is the director and chief curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she has organized more than 25 exhibitions since 1997.

The Museum at FIT has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Could you elaborate on this? The Museum at FIT was built in the early 1970s, and the Couture Council has helped to fund certain renovations. This has helped us gain membership into the American Alliance of Museums. In order to be a member, you must prove that you are following the best practices for museums. It is a very complicated process, but we were able to explain to the AAM how we were moving forward with our goals, such as improving costume storage. We are very proud of this great honor, which is shared by only a minority of museums and by a small number of college and university museums. Without the financial help of the Couture Council none of this would have been possible.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado Benicio del Toro, the Academy Award-winning tough guy reprises his role in Sicario: Day of the Soldado and barely saves the picture from being just another gory shoot-up. This is the so-so follow-up to the original nail-biting crime thriller Sicario. Benicio admitted, “The original Sicario was a tough act to follow. I’m open to making another, but let’s see how this one does. You might get some serial killers who are born with a chip missing, but for the most part I don’t think anyone is born bad.” He and his co-star Josh Brolin are also in this summer’s Avengers: Infinity War. Brolin said, “They like me, but they love Benicio del Toro.”

Yellowstone The TV show Yellowstone, the Western drama starring Kevin Costner, is the breakout hit of the summer. Costner confesses, “Being a celebrity is probably the closest to being a beautiful woman as you can get.” His co-star, True Detective’s Kelly Reilly, who goes naked in nearly every episode, says, “I’d prefer to go under the radar and just do the acting without being famous for it.” That might work if you kept your top and bottom on, dear. Wes Bentley, of The Hunger Games and American Horror Story admitted, “I wanted fame, but I thought it would be incremental. I became afraid of the overnight-sensation thing.” Fame’s here, kid, so chin up!

Time Bomb If you go out only once next summer, go to the Watermill Center gala. At this year’s event, TIME BOMB, presented by Van Cleef & Arpels, over 1,000 guests swarmed the director-artist Robert Wilson’s enchanted forest, where 100 performance artists from 30 countries created magic and mischief. The 25th anniversary of this beloved event honored Pierre Bergé, a co-founder of Yves St. Laurent and early supporter of the Watermill Center. The night raised a staggering $2.2 million in vital funding for its artist residency and education programs. watermillcenter.org The most intriguing auction item was the performance artist Marina Abramovic’s dinner for ten catered by Cipriani, where she will entertain throughout the evening. Abramovic announced rules, which included no sex for three days prior to the dinner. Everyone roared with laughter. The dinner was so popular, it sold twice to two different bidders.

During the fête, Wilson presented her with the art work for the commemorative tee-shirt worn for Gruss’s Walk of Hope + 5K Run in Southampton. Preceding the run, the village was turned yellow, HDRF’s signature color, by the placement of nearly 100 balloons in front of top retailers, including Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, and HSBC. Guests were greeted by Foxx standing on a chair dancing to “Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry. Foxx, in a red, white, and green Gucci track suit, was surrounded by women eager to dance with him. Foxx, who left his not-so-secret girlfriend, Katie Holmes, in NYC, pulled Bruce Deifik, the Oceans’ owner, onto another chair to dance beside him. Foxx asked the DJ to play Prince and Michael Jackson songs for a wild dance-off in the hall that culminated in a 1,000-person conga line. Foxx stopped the music to announce “a young Boston hero is in the house! We loved his music, his Calvin Klein ads, and his movies . . . RACHEL’S RADAR TUTTO IL GIORNO / URBAN ZEN IN SAG HARBOR By raChEl hEllEr

T

hroughout the summer my radar has pointed me in many directions, and I have shared my favorite destinations with you, my wonderful readers. Recently, as I headed down Main Street in Sag Harbor, at the foot of the bay my radar suddenly went off the charts. I found myself at a unique and special oasis that was like none other in the Hamptons. It is the collaboration of Donna Karan and her daughter, Gabby Karan De Felice, whose respective culinary talent, creative genius, and love of international treasures are miraculously combined under one indoor and outdoor space overlooking the bay: Tutto il Giorno/Urban Zen. Here I enjoyed one-of-a-kind jewelry, unique clothing and furniture, and the most delicious Italian food I have ever tasted. I thought I had been transported magically to Italy, India, Africa, Thailand, and Haiti. Best of all, I didn’t require my passport or security clearance to gain entry to this worldly experience. All goods have been handcrafted by artisans and are sold in the spirit of philanthropy and commerce to support three initiatives: preservation of culture (past), bringing mind, body and spirit to healthcare (present) and education (future). The loose-fitting and casual clothing in cotton poplin and silk earth tones is comfortable and inspires association with exotic places. The jewelry and accessories are handmade from leather, shells, wood, or metals, and range from locales as disparate as New Guinea and Haiti. The furnishings are constructed of palm wood, teak, and teak roots covered with exotic mud cloth, which is cloth that has been dyed with fermented mud, a Malian tradition. Donna Karan is not only Gabby’s lifelong role model, but she is also an example to several generations of women whom she has inspired to realize the vast opportunities available to women everywhere who have talent, tenacity, endless energy, a ferocious work ethic, and the remarkable ability to balance a career and family. WHAT MOVES HIM A CONVERSATION WITH MARK BARON By JaCoB puCK

W

hat makes one of the most successful real estate professionals tick? This month we find that out in an exclusive conversation with Mark Baron, a real estate broker with Brown Harris Stevens and an invitation-only member of Luxury Portfolio International. Hamptonites have been getting a glimpse into your professional life all summer. What gives you juice in your personal life? Spending quality time with my wife and soul mate, Susan, and our two mini golden doodles is definitely my top priority. Susan and I just celebrated our 22-year anniversary. Of course our favorite pastime is spending time on the water. What’s something people might not know about you? We both have our U.S. Coast Guard 50-Ton Master license. What has truly stood out for you this year that’s new and fresh in the Hamptons? The Farrell show home on Lawrence Court is probably the best design I’ve seen. The open-concept layout and the seamless transition to the outdoors are spectacular. When showing homes, what features excite you the most these days? The outdoor living amenities. Your home can become almost resortlike, where you don’t really have to leave to get what you want. Ample patios, pool houses, outdoor kitchens, huge grounds—privacy and safety are key to people, so by incorporating outdoor amenities and smart-house technology, you can have it all—including safety. What are your personal thoughts on your partnership with Jane Babcook? It’s a terrific partnership built on trust and support! It’s why we’re so successful. It’s also an excellent balance. We definitely complement each other, and play off each other’s strengths. What does the winter have in store for you? I’ll be taking my motor yacht down the East Coast and leaving it in Florida so we can commute back and forth. It’s an easy getaway, and I look forward to taking in the culture and sights and scene along the way.

Mark and Susan with Munchie (left) and Capt. Calabash (right)

It may be a little-known fact that you’re living on your boat this summer. What’s the best part of that? Being in tune with nature and the elements has a great calming effect on me and creates the perfect balance with my business. What’s still on your bucket list for this summer? We’re looking forward to taking our yacht to the city and seeing the skyline from the boat. Steering my own vessel around the Statue of Liberty means the world to me. I count my blessings that I’m an American, and I am proof the American dream is alive. BEST IN HAMPTONS REAL ESTATE SENSATIONAL SAGAPONACK By BlairE Bass

G

ary DePersia’s name has become synonymous with the best in Hamptons real estate. From Southampton to Montauk and from Sagaponack to Shelter Island, Gary has participated in real estate transactions of over $2 billion since 1995. With hundreds of his exclusive listings sold and closed, as well as matching hundreds of his own buyers and renters with the right properties, Gary’s more than 22 years in Hamptons luxury real estate has generated benchmark sales. When someone is looking to buy, rent, or sell something in the Hamptons, Gary DePersia is one of the first people they consult. For a sample of one of Gary’s spectacular new listings, take a look at this elegant Sagaponack estate. 42 EAST WOODS PATH, SAGAPONACK Imagine a home custom crafted by one of the Hamptons top builders, with interiors by two well-known interior designers, framed in the lush greenery designed by a true landscape architect, creating a parklike atmosphere, all done for a demanding owner who incorporated the bespoke finishes and the copious amenities normally found in the finest of estates. Well, imagine no more, as a spectacular Sagaponack residence within a verdant 1.6 acres, is now available for sale millions below houses of similar excellence. This 8,000 +/- square foot, seven-bedroom home on three levels of living space offers the masterful construction and sensible floor plans that have become the hallmark of Farrell Building Co. The interiors by Campion Platt and Gale Sitomer include a gracious entry of all-over beautifully finished floors that extend to include 5,650 +/- square feet on the first and second floors. The spacious great room with fireplace will be the focal point of all your entertaining, while another room lies just beyond that could be that informal living room, den, or office you have often coveted. The state-of-the-art, eat-in Ciuffo-designed kitchen augmented by well-equipped butler’s pantry, is more than sufficient to service the spacious formal dining room. A convenient guest master suite opening to its own patio, powder room, and mudroom complete the first floor. Upstairs the large master wing, sequestered from the rest of the home, offers a sleeping chamber with fireplace and

cleverly hidden TV, luxurious spa-like bath, a pair of walk-in closets, private terrace, and a smartly designed sitting room, which could be an additional bedroom. Three additional well-spaced guest suites and a laundry room complete the second floor. The finished lower level adds almost 2,500 +/- square feet of well-planned luxury, including recreational room, staff suite, a gym, which, if needed, could also be an additional bedroom, wine cellar with adjacent tasting area, plus a full spa with steam, sauna, and a massage area. SHOWCASING THE MOST SPECTACULAR HOMES IN THE HAMPTONS FOR A GOOD CAUSE By Fallon harrinGton

T

he Hampton Designer Showhouse, by Traditional Home Magazine, showcases 30 of the nation’s top designers and is always a great source for design ideas. Visitors contribute $40, which combined with other funding sources, raises nearly $200,000 for Southampton Hospital throughout the month of August. This year’s home at 2148 Scuttle Hole Road in Bridgehampton is generously being donated by Barsalin Building & Design, and is listed for sale by Frank and Dawn Bodenchak from Sotheby’s International Realty. This is actually the fifth showhouse in which the Bodenchaks have been involved, and they are excited to represent yet another special property. The new estate is in a beautiful location, one quarter of a mile past Channing Daughters Winery, nestled between a 16-acre horse farm and barn on one side and a 17-acre property on the other. While in a bucolic setting, it is only a couple of miles to downtown Sag Harbor, with its restaurants and marinas, or Bridgehampton Village in the other direction. With the 2018 Hampton Designer Showhouse, Barsalin Building & Design has created a gorgeous 8,200-square-foot new construction for $4.795MM that couldn’t be replicated for under $5MM. The home features a tremendous number of amenities and designer features that put the house in a league of its own. It may well be the best new house value in Bridgehampton or Sag Harbor. From the moment you enter, the volume of this house creates a scale that is unique. A two-story foyer with glass walls on three sides leads to an even grander two-story great room. A towering 22-foot wall of glass is a captivating feature, bringing backyard views into every common living area and hallway. High design, open flow, and indoor-outdoor living are three recurring themes throughout. For example, the builder-designer team put together one of the most special kitchens we’ve seen in 2018, combining bleached gray rift oak, metal, and slab marble accents in a way that is designed to stop traffic. Yet the other aspect that

makes this kitchen such a smart design is how it flows seamlessly into so many adjacent user areas: the two-story great room, all-glass breakfast room, butler’s pantry, and outdoor covered porch. Similarly, a corner living room, with windows on three sides, brings the outdoors inside, while connecting to the two-story great room and foyer for open living. The bedroom spaces were also well-thought-out. Uniquely, the home features two master suites, one on each floor, giving the house versatility. Both masters feature the most gorgeous designer baths, with specialty tiles and electronically controlled plumbing that will impress any spa enthusiast. Both masters also feature custom-designed closets and private terraces. There are five additional, graciously sized bedrooms. Finally, a well-designed lower level features a custom theater, private gym, open living room, and game room. Rather than being an afterthought, the lower level is an integrated part of the house, as well designed and finished as the upstairs levels. Outside, the property offers two acres of lush grounds, a gunite pool, overflowing hot tub, ample bluestone terraces (covered and uncovered), and north-south tennis. Come see the showhouse any day this August from 11 to 4:30. For sales showings, call or email Frank and Dawn Bodenchak for a private appointment. This is a unique opportunity that may not present itself again.

NEW YORK’S GOLDEN BOY A CONVERSATION WITH STEVE GOLD By MatthEw BErritt

F

rom high fashion to high-rises, Steve Gold boasts an enviable pedigree. Social Life sat down with the professional model-turned-real estate prodigy and star of Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing New York. Describe your perfect Hamptons day. In the Hamptons, I love to unwind and relax with friends and family. After I wake up, I usually put on a pot of coffee, and go pick up Goldberg’s for everyone who is staying at my house (unless there is surf, in which case I head to the beach early). The day consists of relaxing by the pool, preparing lunch with friends, and maybe previewing some properties for my clients with Hamptons-based Corcoran agents. My favorite part of the day is my sunset walks on the beach with Pablo, my dog, as I take him almost every night to the beach to run and get his energy out before the evening. What is your definition of luxury? Luxury is exclusiveness and uniqueness, handmade, and tailored to few. What charitable organizations are most important to you? Nassau County SPCA. I am a spokesperson for them. Rescuing my dog was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, and I’m happy to put my voice behind local organizations that support animals and all the volunteers that make it happen. The Real Deal just named you one of the top ten brokers in Manhattan. What does that mean to you? It’s always an honor to be recognized for hard work. My business has been growing steadily over a decade of working in real estate, and to rank in the top ten Manhattan agents this year is a testament to that dedication. What is your best piece of real estate advice? Be patient in your search, but when the right property comes along, do not be afraid to pull the trigger. Good properties in prime locations that are priced correctly still sell quickly.

In such a competitive industry, what unique skills have helped make you one of the top brokers in America at such a young age? Real estate is a rare industry where hustle and drive are rewarded no matter what age. In a relationship business, what sets me apart—first and foremost—is my commitment to meaningful connections with my clients, but also expertise of the market and inventory, design and architecture knowledge, and smart negotiation. What is the most expensive property you have ever sold? Over the course of my career, I have sold homes in excess of $25MM and work on $250MM+ development sellouts. My most expensive sale, however, was a highly confidential transaction, any detail of which I am not at liberty to discuss. w Million Dollar Listing New York airs Tuesdays at 10 pm on Bravo

ROUND HILL HOTEL & VILLAS RALPH LAUREN’S JAMAICAN PARADISE By JoE alEXanDEr

Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theater, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City, and currently resides in Manhattan and Southampton.

Ralph Lauren designed the 36 luxurious, ocean-view guest rooms at The Pineapple House, the main hotel at Jamaica’s Round Hill Hotel and Villas, but this was no mere interior design gig, it was a labor of love.” The greenness of Jamaica is gorgeous,” pronounced the designer. “The air is very mild. It feels like a paradise. There’s a naturalness and ease of living. It smells like a beautiful place.” Lauren and his wife, Ricky, own two of the 27 villas on the lush 110-acre property. One, called High Rock, sits on the resort’s highest point, “We made the house what it should be,” Lauren said of the place he’s owned for more than 30 years. “It’s in the spirit of Round Hill—very quiet, very elegant.”

The other, White Orchid, which they purchased in 1996, is down the hill, directly on the beach, and was once owned by William Paley, the former president of CBS, and his famously fashionable wife, Babe. Lauren decorated this one with a classic feel. “The White Orchid is clean, barefoot, and luxurious,” he said. “It’s like being on a boat.” Ralph Lauren has put his stamp of approval on Jamaica as a vacation destination, according to Josef Forstmayr, Round Hill’s longtime and popular managing director who worked with the designer on its recent update. “We go there as often as we can escape,” said Ricky Lauren, who penned a book about Jamaica titled My Island. THE RICH AND FAMOUS Round Hill is Jamaica’s most personal, elegant, and private resort, but Lauren was not the first boldfaced name to discover its charms. John and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned at a seaside cottage at the resort. Errol Flynn and Noel Coward visited before buying their own homes here. During the 1950s and ’60s Princess Grace (nee Kelly), Claudette Colbert, Clark Gable, Yul Brynner, and Alfred Hitchcock could be found sunning and swimming at Round Hill. Recent visitors have included Paul McCartney and Pierce Brosnan. Justin Bieber was seen kissing Selena Gomez at the resort earlier this year before they floated down the island’s Great River on a bamboo raft, with Chukka Caribbean Adventures. chukka.com

PRINCE HARRY & MEGHAN MARKLE Vogue called Lauren’s spring 2018 runway show, complete with wicker chairs, tropical plants, and woven-basket patterns, a “love letter to his Round Hill, Jamaica, home.” Lauren’s show notes read: “Everyone wishes for a magical place where they can step out of time into the beauty of nature. For spring, I wanted to share the mood, the light, the blue and white freshness of my retreat in Jamaica.” An unofficial ambassador for the island nation, Lauren was named an Honorary Commander of Jamaica’s Order of Distinction, and his face appeared on a postage stamp, an honor shared by Winston Churchill and Princess Diana. SocialLifeMagazine.com

In March 2017 Prince Harry brought along his then-girlfriend Meghan Markle for the wedding of his best friend and former wingman, Tom “Skippy” Inskip. The visit was important because attending the Round Hill nuptials took their relationship to a new and important level, since Markle would be meeting the Prince’s closest friends. Harry served as an usher; therefore, Harry’s bringing Markle suggested they were becoming more serious as a couple. Several months later Harry and Meghan announced their engagement. The royals stayed at villa 16, where the James Bond author Ian Fleming had once stayed. The glamorous, ultra-private villa has six bedrooms, two pools, and stunning views of the Caribbean, with decor by Ralph Lauren.

Harry and Meghan loved hanging on the beach, and their villa was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen where the future Duchess of Sussex could whip up dinner for her prince. That’s if she wanted to cook. Round Hill’s villas come fully staffed with a designated chef, housekeeper, and gardener. You really don’t have to lift a finger at this resort, except to raise a flute of Champagne to your lips. Harry took Meghan and four pals to Sky Beach, a local and very casual seaside reggae restaurant, where the hostess said, “He was drinking whiskey with his friends; he’s just a normal guy who likes to have fun. Prince Harry told me they’d be back. I’ll reserve Sea View, his favorite hut for them to eat in.”

A STORIED PAST Originally part of a sugarcane plantation owned by Lord Monson, Round Hill resort was the brainchild of John Pringle, a Jamaican-born entrepreneur whose socialite mother owned a hotel in Montego Bay. Pringle served in the British Army, worked for Elizabeth Arden in New York City, opened a haberdashery, and after marrying and having kids, returned to Jamaica. Round Hill opened in 1953 with Noel Coward as its first shareholder. Today, VIP shareholders include the shoe designer Vanessa Noel and the Blackstone co-founder Stephen Schwarzman and his wife, Christine.

in love with everything. Perched on a hill overlooking Round Hill Bay, the views are sensational, and the lush 110-acre resort has a private beach.

DINNER ON THE BEACH WITH SILVER CANDLES & TABLECLOTHS What an unexpected and fun surprise on our first evening! It turns out that Mondays are designated for beach barbecue parties, and the longtime general manager Josef Forstmayr continues the tradition—in signature Round Hill luxury style. This means tables with red tablecloths, candles, and fine silverware set on the beachfront, and buffet tables with various cuisines are placed under trees. We had fresh corn, chicken, brisket, and sautéed shrimp. The executive chef, Martin Maginley, oversees everything, and much of the produce is grown in the resort’s organic gardens.

VILLA 15 We were lucky to end up in villa 15, perched high on the hill with views of both Round Hill Bay and Montego Bay. The charming, secluded villa boasts three en-suite bedrooms, living and dining rooms, and expansive terraces with breathtaking views. We had our own large pool set in a lush green garden, plus a smaller plunge pool off one of the bedrooms.

FROM ASTAIRE TO THE SOUND OF MUSIC Adele Astaire, Fred’s sister and early dance partner, owned Round Hill’s villa 25, which was later used by JFK. He actually edited and rehearsed his presidential inauguration speech here, and parts of it are still displayed in the villa. Oscar Hammerstein owned villa 12. He met the real-life Maria von Trapp here. He wrote The Sound of Music as well as several other musicals in the three-bedroom property. Angela Bassett, Whoopi Goldberg, and Taye Diggs lounged in the private pool while taking in the spectacular hillside views of the Caribbean from villa 11, the set of the 1998 movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back. A few years later, Diggs and Idina Menzel had their wedding at Round Hill.

ULTIMATE HOSPITALITY Round Hill has its own concierge at Montego Bay’s airport, ready to assist you and arrange private transportation to the resort, about 20 minutes away. Before our trip, they sent us a full, written itinerary for our stay. How delightful! Our villa included a daily New York Times, afternoon tea, full use of the fitness center with an instructor, non-motorized water sports, shuttle to Tryall Golf Club, and supervised activities for kids—all at no extra charge. We arrived at Round Hill on a Monday and immediately fell

The cottage comes with its own staff: chef, housekeeper, and gardener. Everything was always immaculate and what fun to order banana pancakes for breakfast or any time we chose.

IN-VILLA DINING While there are several dining options, the cook in your villa will pamper you. Start your day—whether you’re up with the roosters or sleeping until mid-afternoon—with those aforementioned insanely delicious banana pancakes accompanied by freshly brewed Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, served on your private patio overlooking the sea. Try the cinnamon French toast, coconut pancakes, or fresh tropical fruit plate, or more traditional breakfast dishes like omelets and cereal. Of course, they serve up authentic Jamaican breakfasts with dishes like ackee (a gorgeous tropical fruit) and saltfish (cod); or organic callaloo (a leafy green) with boiled yams. You literally do not need to leave your villa. You can eat all your meals in total privacy. Lunch offerings include a variety of soups with local flavors, chicken and vegetable pepper pot, organic salads, wraps, fresh fish, and fried chicken. Among the in-villa dinner dishes you’ll find fresh Caribbean fish steamed, pan-roasted, or jerked; chicken, shrimp or vegetable curry; pastas with local vegetables; and chicken prepared in various ways, including barbecue. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

ALLIGATOR PARK After breakfast it’s fun to go exploring; be sure to check out the alligator farm and zoo at Jamaica Swamp Safari Village that’s close to both Round Hill and Rose Hall. Here you will see a variety of indigenous animals, including snakes, parrots and other birds, monkeys, raccoons, and even a boar. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Rose Hall’s Red Haunted Bedroom

If you ask (and tip a little bit), the guide will get some big hunks of beef to feed Sammy B, the one-thousand-pound alligator that lives in his own pond. The James Bond movie Live and Let Die was filmed here, notably the scene where Roger Moore escapes over the backs of several alligators. It’s fun to google the video on your phone while you are here. my-island-jamaica.com

ROSE HALL, HAUNTED HOUSE If you like history, definitely go to nearby Rose Hall, a Georgian-style 18th-century plantation Great House, probably the most famous in Jamaica. Completely restored in the1960s and furnished with antiques, the historic house and extensive grounds are open for tours. According to legend, Rose Hall is haunted by Annie Palmer, a “white witch” and murderer. Married to John Palmer, who owned the plantation until Annie murdered him, she is said to have offed her two subsequent spouses as well as some of the plantation’s slaves. The legend goes that one of the slaves later murdered Annie. Johnny Cash recorded The Ballad of Annie Palmer, with the lyrics: “Where’s your husband Annie, where’s number two and three? Are they sleeping ’neath the palms beside the Caribbean Sea?” At night I hear you ridin’ and I hear your lovers call. And still can feel your presence round the Great House at Rose Hall.” It is claimed that she still walks the property, and so strong is her curse that no one has dared sleep here since the 1980s, when a couple got scared off by the ghost. Annie is buried here, and by the ocean under three palm trees lie her three murdered husbands. Rose Hall even offers haunted night tours, not recommended for children under ten. rosehall.com

The Grill is Round Hill’s rooftop dining spot, where you can enjoy the balmy ocean breezes while taking in the panoramic views. The food here is modern Caribbean, much of it locally produced, with snapper, grouper, and local lobster straight from the sea. Ingredients are organic and sustainably grown.

SEASIDE TERRACE, BAREFOOT ELEGANCE This stone terrace overlooking the sea serves lunch as well as other themed meals, including a Caribbean curry night on Wednesdays, and authentic Jamaican food on Fridays along with a popular live show appropriate for all ages. Highlights on the Jamaican menu include firecracker cole slaw, gazpacho shooters, jerk chicken, braised oxtail, and crispy fried conch, plus terrific vegetarian options. Desserts are homemade, and there’s a flambé station with Jamaican rum. Tip: the a la carte menu is always available as well, so you can join in the seaside fun and you won’t go hungry if the day’s cuisine is not to your taste. The draw here is the informal and fun lunch and dinner, but with elegant touches like candlelight and tablecloths. “Barefoot elegance” best describes the ambiance. The menu here highlights the James Beard Award-winning chef Martin Maginley’s clean Caribbean cuisine, updating classic dishes from the 1950s when the resort was founded, including lemongrass lobster bisque, grilled tuna filet, beef Wellington, and his signature Scotch bonnet ice cream.

AFTERNOON TEA, BARS, AND CASUAL DINING Round Hill’s ultimate experience is tea time. It is served daily at 4 pm in the lounge, perfect for a break from the sun or to meet friends old and new. The tea fare is traditional, with perfect cucumber sandwiches, pastries, and fresh fruits. Check out the black-and-white photographs of famous guests from the past dotting the walls of the Round Hill’s cocktail bar, the perfect place for pre- or post-dinner cocktails, with sunset views and a musician tickling the ivories. ROUND HILL MEET THE HOTELIER, JOSEF FORSTMAYR By JoE alEXanDEr

JAMAICA’S HONORARY CONSUL GENERAL FOR AUSTRIA In his office at Round Hill, the managing director Josef Forstmayr has a glorious letter from Queen Elizabeth II, naming him Jamaica’s honorary Consul General for Austria. He inherited the position when fellow Austrian Heinz Simonitsch, another trailblazer of the Caribbean island’s hospitality industry, retired in 2005. Forstmayr has been at Round Hill since 1989, and in Jamaica since 1979, when after a freezing winter at Cornell doing post-graduate studies, some classmates from the island invited him to visit their homeland. Staying at a lovely hotel in Negril, Forstmayr kept suggesting improvements to the owners. “Finally, they just were annoyed with me and said, ‘If you know everything, why don’t you stay and help us run it?’ ” He did, and soon fell in love with the island, and before he knew it, he had built a career. Eventually the owners of Round Hill whisked him away to help position it as a year-round destination. “It was always a very exclusive place, owned by a very exclusive group of people, but they needed to be dragged into the 20th century.” Adding “They all really had a passion for Round Hill, which to this day sets us apart from many other places. My owners are the most passionate group of people that love Jamaica, and they love Round Hill.”

SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY Among the many famous guests at Round Hill, Forstmayr is especially fond of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, and Sir Paul McCartney, who has been coming to the resort for many years. “All the McCartney children grew up here: Stella, Mary, James, and Heather. They all used to spend every Christmas here, and he’s an incredible person.”

THE ORDER OF DISTINCTION Forstmayr currently serves as the director of the Jamaica Tourist Board, the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce, chairs the Montego Bay Arts Council, and has also been active in many other industry groups. In 2005, he received The Order of Distinction in the Rank of Officer for his contribution to Jamaica’s tourism industry. His enthusiasm for his adopted country has never waned. “At one point I just felt I was emotionally connected to Jamaica more so than to Austria, and I just love the passion of SocialLifeMagazine.com

the people in every way.” Favorite local haunts include a south coast establishment that serves conch soup right on the beach, and the jerk chicken and pork at Border Jerk “in the middle of nowhere.” He refuses to divulge the location of a secluded beach where he goes skinny dipping.

ANYTHING YOU WISH IT TO BE One thing that makes Round Hill so special is the staff, many of whom are descendants of locals who helped to build the place. “To this day, our staff, they’re like a family, and they greet you like family, and they’re proud of the place.” For visitors, the resort can be anything you wish it to be. “It can be the hideaway, it can be the social place, it can be the place to rekindle romance, or to spoil your children. Or it can be a place to just read the most fabulous book and be all by yourself.” Round Hill Hotel and Villas roundhill.com

A TRIP TO THE AMALFI COAST SACH D. CHOPRA By toM FlanaGan

S

ocial Life caught up with Sach D. Chopra on his recent trip to Italy. Sach is a business executive in New York City and known on the Hamptons scene. Our discussion focused on Positano on the Amalfi Coast and offers our readers informed recommendations.

What draws you to the Amalfi Coast? In season there are few places as beautiful as the Amalfi Coast, which is built cliffside overlooking the Mediterranean—technically the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its physical beauty combined with warm Italian hospitality, great food and wine, and mild weather make it one of my favorite places.

What hotels do you recommend to travelers who may be going on a special occasion? There are several luxury hotels with a rich history. Three of these I especially recommend for a stay or at least for dining. Le Sirenuse located in Positano is beautiful and situated on the hillside—it has fantastic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea during the daytime and is enjoyable for cocktails or dinner in the evening. Hotel Santa Caterina located in Amalfi and Hotel Belmont Caruso in Ravello offer exceptional lunches with stunning waterfront views. Is there a place that offers the best view or sunset? It’s hard to choose one as Positano and the drive to Amalfi are incredible. If I had to pick one it would be Villa Cimbrone Gardens in Ravello. At the end of the gardens there are sweeping views of the sea from Terrazzo dell’lnfinito, the Terrace of Infinity. It’s truly breathtaking. Social Life

What activities do you recommend in these towns? There are many towns along the coast with many activities. There are boat charters, water recreation, and beaches. I enjoyed trying local limoncello and for those who enjoy shopping, there are great boutiques with ceramics and linens made by local artisans. What is your favorite memory? My favorite place is Positano, known as the jewel of the Amalfi Coast. It’s relaxing to walk the streets and to take in the vibe and the views. What restaurants you do recommend in Positano? I will give you one for fine dining and one that is more casual. Al Palazzo is fantastic for outdoor dining and has terrific pasta, SocialLifeMagazine.com

seafood, and wine. It has a great ambiance and décor and makes for a good intimate dinner spot. The Brasserie is a great casual gem that is perfect for lunch—it’s right on the water with great views of the cliffside and has pizza, salad, and gelato. Is there anything that you didn’t get to see on this trip? I wasn’t able to get to the island of Capri, which I hear is fantastic and hope to see on my next visit. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with our readers, and we look forward to catching up with you soon. You’re welcome, and I hope your readers experience some of these great places and enjoy them as much as I did.

LAS VEGAS RENAISSANCE PALMS By anthony MiChaEl

I

t’s likely that no other city in the U.S. has reinvented itself so magnificently (and so often) as Las Vegas. From its 1950s roots as Sin City to the family-friendly ’80s and ’90s to the luxury destination it has become today, Las Vegas has evolved into a playground for those who are seeking the most exquisite fashion, sumptuous food, exceptional entertainment, art, and, above all, luxury accommodations. As an East Coast summer of leisure is winding down and Hamptonites are considering their fall and winter travel, all the buzz is on the $620 million renovation of Palms Casino Resort, which has once again reinforced the property’s dominance. Touching virtually every aspect of the property, the renovation is transforming Palms into a must-see gaming and entertainment destination. A mix of classic Vegas hospitality and extraordinary new experiences is the result of world-class

partnerships, many of which will be familiar to New Yorkers: exquisite purveyors of fine art; TAO Group, Clique Hospitality, and Live Nation as well as the celebrity chefs Bobby Flay, Michael Symon, and Marc Vetri.

First, the art. Peppered throughout the property, the art is a nod to both the finer things as well as the eclectic, and is manna to the East Coast set. The wide range of street, modern, and blue-chip pieces is apparent in every detail of the newly remodeled hotel, including the centerpiece of the casino floor created by Damien Hirst. Upon arrival at Palms, guests are immersed in a worldclass collection of some of the most notable and unique art pieces rarely displayed publicly in one setting. The collection Social Life

Palms High Limit: A touch of Warhol

represents the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol (on loan from the personal art collections of Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta) alongside newly commissioned creations by leading contemporary artists such as Adam Parker Smith, Jason REVOK, Eric Haze, Scott Hove, Felipe Pantone, James Jean, and Timothy Curtis. Other artists whose work is prominently displayed include Dustin Yellin, Takashi Murakami, and KAWS.

Second, the food. In May, Palms introduced Scotch 80 Prime, Las Vegas’s newest premier steakhouse. Led by the executive chef Barry S. Dakake, Scotch is the premier hot spot, combining classic Las Vegas charm with an unparalleled dining experience. It features a contemporary and seasonally-inspired menu devoted SocialLifeMagazine.com

to thoughtful presentations of carefully sourced USDA prime beef, certified Japanese Kobe beef, chicken, chops, and seafood. Its name harkens to a dedicated whisky program—led by the Scotch master Cody Fredrickson—which is focused on rare and vintage marks from top producers in Scotland, including the Macallan Fine & Rare Vintage collection. Playing on the slang “send it” or “just saying yes” to something, SEND Noodles features a robust menu with influences from Mandarin, Cantonese, Szechuan, Japanese, Korean, and Thai cuisines as well as creative takes on American and Italian classics using Asian ingredients—all conjured by the executive chef Francis Mo. Speaking of re-imagination, A.Y.C.E. turns the buffet concept on its head with an innovative, technique-focused approach across seven stations in an open-hall setting.

Scotch 80 Prime

Finally, Lucky Penny Café serves up a playful menu featuring an array of modern American cuisine with a twist of worldly flavors for breakfast, lunch, and dinner: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Coming up? World-class restaurants from the award-winning celebrity chefs Michael Symon, Marc Vetri, and Bobby Flay.

Third, night (and day) life. Clique Hospitality’s Andy Masi and nightlife partners Ryan Labbe and Jason “JRoc” Craig recently opened APEX Social Club and Camden Cocktail Lounge. APEX, located in the space formerly known as Ghostbar, with the unofficial title of the best view in Las Vegas, capitalizes on the unrivaled 180-degree view of the city. Camden, located adjacent to the resort’s main entrance, is a dynamic lounge focusing on mind-blowing cocktails presented in a distinctive over-the-top manner and with flair unlike anything seen before. In addition, TAO Group, one of the most successful

nightlife and restaurant companies in the world, will be bringing its highly acclaimed Vandal restaurant from New York City to the property next spring. You may want to take it easy after a night out. The new, world-class 73,000-square-foot pool club, also developed in partnership with TAO Group, is redefining the day club experience in Las Vegas and is now open year-round. Look for waterfalls, stone gardens, a Jacuzzi, a stone fireplace, and tropical flowers to help you find your Zen.

Finally, accommodations. As if Palms wasn’t already rocking it, you know it’s critical when visiting Vegas to get away from it all, on your terms, and in the lap of luxury. Well, Palms put the final touches on its accommodations, with a complete transformation of the iconic Fantasy Tower guest rooms, suites, and the six famous Sky Villas. The intent, which has been accomplished, was to provide guests with some of the most luxurious accommodations in the world. Social Life

Bathrooms are stupendous with walk-in showers in richly striped Zebrino marble. Luxurious amenities and terrycloth robes and slippers provide a revitalizing spa-like experience. Book a villa 31 suite for luxurious spaciousness and an indulgent, elevated experience. In addition to the standard guestroom amenities, the suites include a full wet bar with custom cabinetry. One of things we love? Artists DabsMyla, a husband-andwife team from Melbourne, Australia, known for their whimsical pop-art paintings and illustrations, have designed the art on the in-room intimacy kit. TrĂŠs chic meets trĂŠs quirky! One of the best things about Vegas is its collective propensity to rejuvenate and thrill. Palms is paving the way in 2018/2019. SocialLifeMagazine.com

REIMAGINING THE ROAD TRIP IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA By anthony MiChaEl

The Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa

D

o the words “road trip” seem anathema to your luxury sensibilities? For most of us, the very mention conjures our childhood: an oversized car packed to the ceiling with bags, you jammed into the back seat with siblings and the family pooch, and irritated but determined parents up front navigating a relentless cross-country highway system. Le sigh! Fast forward to you and your partner cruising along the incomparable California coast in a luxury auto, and being greeted by some of the area’s most exclusive off-the-beaten-path hotels. It’s a concept the Woodside Hotel Group is calling “The Ultimate Northern California Experience” drive package, a personalized road trip experience complete with luxury transportation provided by Tesla. Whether it’s a quest to find awe-inspiring ocean vistas in Monterey, spend a lazy day wine tasting in Napa Valley, or enjoy the splendor of verdant hillsides and rich farmland in Sonoma, Woodside’s novel offering allows travelers a personalized luxury travel experience and (finally) the chance to live out a quintessential road trip without the “baggage.”

It all begins with one-on-one attention and the expertise from a dedicated personal concierge. Here’s a tip: ask for three or more hotels within the Woodside portfolio for the most unforgettable journey through The Golden State’s most dynamic region. Start with Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa. Only a short distance from the small and easy Monterey airport, the property will ease you out of your travel and into California dreams. Plan some time for a quick drive south to take in the legendary splendor of Big Sur, and then commit to two days of immersion in Monterey, known for some of the world’s most spectacular coastline, the vibrant streets of historic Cannery Row, scenic hiking trails, glorious wine country, and pristine golf courses. Known as “grand dame of the bay,” Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa is perched over the magnificent Monterey Bay and features spectacular ocean views from most suites. Our favorite is the opulent Cannery Row Suite, featuring ocean and historic Cannery Row views, fireplace, spacious bathroom with a marble soaking tub, and separate shower and double sink vanity. Harvest Inn

Bodega Bay Lodge

Leave plenty of time for a drive north. Classic, can’t-miss pit stops include Half Moon Bay and Mavericks. A more ambitious, but recommended, itinerary will include San Francisco, Sausalito, and Muir Woods National Monument (yes, any national park or monument gives your “road trip” cred and will make you the envy of your wanderlust friends back home). There’s nothing wrong, though, with heading straight to recommendation number two: Harvest Inn in Napa Valley. Capturing a coveted third place for hotels in Northern California by Condé Nast Traveler, this idyllic resort was clearly designed to celebrate the vineyard way of life (and one of our favorite libations). Nestled into five uniquely crafted neighborhoods, with two secluded swimming pools, and a plush spa with indoor and outdoor facilities, Harvest Inn is surrounded by lush landscaping and situated in proximity to the hub of activity in historic St. Helena. But, enough of that: you came here for the grapes. Your concierge will hook you up with the most exclusive tastings while your insanely comfortable room (go all in and request a vineyard view room) awaits. Your next stop will bring you back to the sea: Bodega Bay Lodge. Serenity is the name of the game here. Poised atop a tranquil bluff overlooking the Pacific, the lodge reflects the wild beauty of this romantic region and offers an array of incredible things to do in Sonoma. Watch the fishermen ply the bay for the day’s catch. Spot migrating whales in the waves. Scout for rare birds. If you haven’t SocialLifeMagazine.com

gotten your fill of vino, the property is within reach of the Russian River Valley’s exclusive wine scene. Unspoiled, unruffled, and unplugged, Bodega Bay Lodge will cater to your every need. And, at 1,200 square feet, the Captain’s Quarters makes sure every need is met. Featuring a 600-square-foot wrap-around sun deck that overlooks Bodega Bay, this stay in opulence will be unforgettable. Regardless of your itinerary, each destination ensures that guests experience the distinctive local culture, authentic hospitality, and luxurious comforts that distinguish Woodside’s hotels with impressive perks: • Dedicated VIP reservations and concierge support in planning your adventure • A unique welcome amenity at each selected property based on your personal preferences • Tesla Model S or Model X* available for pick-up and drop-off at all major Bay area airports; vehicles can be conveniently dropped off at your departing airport. Your parents were well-intentioned, but it’s time for you to be attentive to your grown-up luxury travel needs . . . while reliving a little bit of nostalgia. Take to the road!

A DAY IN THE SOCIAL LIFE

SAG HARBOR AND SHELTER ISLAND 2018 By KarEn holly BErlinEr

Situated between the villages of East Hampton and Southampton and just a short jaunt to Montauk, Sag Harbor invites you to walk its quaint village streets peppered with trendy boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, and fine restaurants, with historic homes and modern mansions sharing prime locations. In starting our weekend here on Friday, we shop on Main Street and then head over to Baron’s Cove for our first night’s stay. This lodging spot features a nautically inspired decor, a bar-lounge, an inviting front porch, a side veranda and a classic American restaurant with spectacular water views of the sprawling harbor. With 67 rooms appointed with private garden terraces, harbor loft suites with balconies, village rooms, even dog-friendly rooms, we have our choice of accommodations for an ideal fit. We swim and dunk in the large heated saltwater pool, play a few rounds of tennis on the tennis court, enjoy the state-of-the-art equipment in the onsite fitness studio, and enjoy premium spa services and complimentary beach service with door-to-door transportation. We also take part in the yoga and core conditioning classes on the front lawn. The day is filled with delightful activities. At night we enjoy professional live entertainment, always offered in season. For dinner, we eat in the restaurant on the premises: a classic, all-American dining experience, featuring surf-and-turf, fresh catch of the day, lobster rolls, and chef signature dishes, courtesy of one of the Hamptons most recognized chefs, Matty Boudreau. After dining, we catch the last rays of sun as its melts into a sunset collage of baby pink and blue in the harbor sky. Saturday, we lounge by the pool for the day and at night for dinner we head out to the Bell & Anchor, a waterside restaurant where David Loewenberg and its executive chef Sam McCleland showcase creative and tasty American dishes. Among the surf-centric menu, popular choices such as lobster steamed or baked can be paired with turf favorites like prime steaks. We sample the tuna bowl: diced yellow fin, cucumber, spinach, orange, sesame, and ponzu. We taste the home port chowder, with white fish, clams, potatoes, cream, and bacon. The pastry chef Kat McCleland partners with this team and offers the perfect finishing touch: the popular root beer float with two straws for sharing, complete with an anchor cookie playfully plopped like a cherry on a sundae!

Sunday is warm and sunny, so we head over to Havens Beach on Sag Harbor Bay with its secluded sandy stretch of sand and its calm bay waters; perfect for some leisurely wading and sun bathing. We stroll along the beach, catch a delightful cat nap; refreshed, we prepare for an evening out. The Beacon is another restaurant with David Loewenberg and Sam McCleland at the helm. Perched above the Sag Harbor marina, this dining spot personifies the Sag vibe. We choose tasty appetizers, including pork belly buns with pineapple slaw, rich but at the same time refreshing! For a main course, the halibut baked in parchment

with sundried tomatoes and Israeli cous-cous is satisfying. The extensive wine list allows for perfect pairing. The next day, we take a quick ferry over to Shelter Island. We arrive to find 20 miles of coastline, ranging from sandy beaches with shallow waters to rustic spots to hike and explore in the rough. Opting for seclusion, we choose Shell Beach, a narrow stretch of land just under a mile long, on the Shelter Island Sound. Accessible only by an unpaved road, Shell has no amenities. It is just perfect, as we hope to completely unplug from it all. After heading back to Sag, we are ready for a quick refresher, so we make our way to The Juicy Naam, where healthy beverages such as organic juice blends (look for the juice based on astrological principles) and smoothies, local vegetables, and cleanses are offered to encourage health, healing, and rejuvenation. Raw food snacks and prepared food add heartier options if you’re hungry. Appointments for cleanses, yoga, and other treatments are also available here. We hit the beach again and after a picture-perfect activity-packed day, we crave something casual. so we grab a bite at Bay Burger. It offers a unique roster of hamburgers on buns baked daily on-site, and you can expect custom steakhouse grilled perfection. Fresh churned homemade ice cream provides the perfect ending. We stayed until Monday so we could visit the Bay Street Theater for topnotch performances on the roster for Music Monday. Celebrity, actor, host, writer, designer, and producer Isaac Mizrahi, for example, is performing in August here. This weekend checked all boxes, as usual! SocialLifeMagazine.com

The aptly named Neptune’s Tail was created for Sag Harbor’s Grenning Gallery by its owner, Laura Grenning, for its highly acclaimed June 23 opening, Neptune in Pisces, an ocean-lover’s mecca of artists celebrating water as a symbol of consciousness and connectedness of all things. A kaleidoscope of magnificent water themes dominated the room, one more transporting than the next. Works were from artists new to the gallery as well as new offerings by regular Greening artists. New artists included George H. Lewis (a detail from his dramatic piece Aphrodite’s Foam is pictured above), Amy Florence, Tina Orsolic Dalessio, Jeremy Lipking, Hilary McCarthy. Gallery artists included Nelson H. White, Stephen Hannock, Maryann Lewis, and Ben Lussier. George H. Lewis, an art-and-consciousness pioneer. gave a stirring gallery talk on the subject of Neptune in Pisces (See his website: neptuneinpisces.com). With its jewel-toned ocean teal and refreshing tart flavor, Neptune’s Tail was the perfect complement to the exquisite watery landscape of the day. The cocktail was sponsored by Sag Harbor Liquor Store, which donated local vodkas (Long Island Vodka and Sagaponack Vodka) along with the curaçao.

Elephant’s Tusk was created by the JK Chef Collection food and wine guru Jack Kelly for one of our favorite charities, Veterinarians International. The VI philosophy is that about 75 percent of recently emerging human illness comes from animals, and its special mission is to boost the health and lessen the suffering of animals in underserved regions, which has the added benefit of protecting human health. From delivering vaccines and ensuring good veterinary care to training programs and the protection of species from elephants to chimpanzees, VI plays a pivotal role in global health and compassion. For its August 3 Wild at Heart Gala at the Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club, VI brand ambassador Kelly crafted a palatecleansing, festively fresh libation evocative of a Serengeti safari:

KEEP THE PARTY GOING AN INTERVIEW WITH DJ RAY JARRELL By liZaBEth ZinDEl

O

ne of DJ Ray Jarrell’s favorite memories happened in The Monkey Bar at the Sandy Lane resort in Barbados. It was 5 am and he had just finished spinning an after-party for a group of guests. As he was leaving, a guest came up to him with his tie draped around his head, his shirt off, drenched in sweat, and said, “Can you play one more song please?” With over eighteen years in the music industry, Jarrell is the founder and creative director of Jarrell Entertainment. The brand is a leader in entertainment creation for the most selective clients and planners worldwide. They are known for creating experiences that are luxurious, sophisticated, and down-to-earth. Every minute of an event is choreographed with care to ensure success. “If people are having a crazy good time at an event, then I am enjoying the party,” said Jarrell. He defines the DJs at Jarrell Entertainment as music specialists. “They get the party going and keep it going. Our process is to curate music that matches our client’s vision and tells a really good story,” he said. “We don’t know what it’s like to have an off night.” While Jarrell has spun reggae at Sunshine’s on Nevi’s Island, played in the Bahamas on the same stage with Flo Rida for a wedding after-party, and spun in the Côte d’Azur on a 300-foot yacht,

one of his favorite destinations to spin music is the Hamptons. “The Hamptons is a magical place. Artists have always flocked here for the golden light and creativity,” he said. “During the summer there is a sophisticated, well-dressed, elegant, artist, eclectic, world-traveling crowd. This crowd knows the best of the world and expects it. I like delivering under that pressure.” Currently, Jarrell is enjoying finding an inventive answer to a potential client’s question, “Should I have a band or a DJ?” He believes a client doesn’t have to choose between the two and has developed Evolution: The DJ | Hybrid Band. “Created with the discerning client in mind, we surround a DJ with musicians such as a saxophonist, percussionist, and bass guitarist. This adds a 4th dimension to a performance and blows people away,” he said. In his free time, the busy entrepreneur enjoys spending time at South Fork’s beaches with his family. Jarrell said, “There is an amazing art and music scene out East. The Surf Lodge is a great example. It gets packed, but they bring in some brilliant singers. G.Love was awesome last year!” DJ Ray Jarrell jarrellentertainment.com Social Life

CHEMTOB, MOSS, FORMAN & BEYDA Joshua Forman, one of N.Y.’s top family-law attorneys, is often quoted in the press, particularly when a high-profile divorce is in the news. He has offered expert commentary on CBS News, CNN, Court TV, Inside Edition, and in magazines like People and US Weekly. In a recent article about Donald Trump, Jr.’s divorce proceedings, the Daily Mail dubbed Forman “the celebrity divorce attorney.”

CELEBRITY DIVORCE ATTORNEY Forman, a partner in the powerhouse family law firm Chemtob, Moss, Forman & Beyda, never speaks about his own clients, who have included designer Tory Burch and banking heir Matthew Mellon, who recently died on his way to a rehab facility. His firm has also represented Matt Lauer’s wife Annete Lauer, Michael Douglas‘s wife Diandra Douglas, and Star Jones in their respective divorces.

PRENUPTIAL & POSTNUPTIAL AGREEMENTS All family law cases—divorce, matrimonial law, prenuptial, and postnuptial agreements, child custody issues—are emotional and stressful. People call and e-mail at all hours. “Clients are glad that you pick up the phone and talk to them. That few minutes on a Saturday can save their whole weekend.” And Forman sees the bright side in even the ugliest of cases. “I try to get them the best result possible, and I find it enjoyable that they can see real results. When a person wants to get divorced and wants a certain amount of time with their kids, and we get that for them, it’s really uplifting. When the clients are happy, it’s great. After studying law at Emory, Forman began working for Nancy Chemtob, now his partner, in 1998. cmfesq.com

ancy Chemtob is the go-to lawyer for the famous and the powerful seeking divorces on the East Coast. Annette Lauer, Tory Burch, Star Jones, Diandra Douglas, and Bobby Flay have all sought her counsel.

CHILD CUSTODY AND MONEY Chemtob is also the go-to lawyer for samesex couples seeking divorce and fighting over child custody and money. She was the first attorney to convince a New York State judge to recognize same-sex divorce when she handled New York’s first-ever same-sex divorce case for a couple who had married in Massachusetts, thus setting legal precedent. In a more recent high-profile same-sex case, Gunn v Hamilton, Chemtob fought for her client, Kelly Gunn, to win shared custody of the unmarried couple’s adopted son. The case has been referred to as “2017’s Kramer v Kramer,” and helped redefine parenthood in NY.

MAKING NEW LAW Despite having been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and on Good Morning America, and the Today show during her 24 years in practice, Chemtob was amazed to be included in a 14-page New Yorker article about the groundbreaking Gunn v Hamilton case. “Our reputation from this case and the first case is that we’re flexible; we’ll do what we need to do; we’ll make law.” Ironically, her same-sex clients are uninterested in breaking new legal ground. “The two moms sit in there screaming about the kid, about money,” she says. “So we’re making legal precedent, and they’re, you know, just having a regular divorce.” On the philanthropic front, Chemtaub hosted a fundraiser for Mount Sinai Hospital in Water Mill this summer. cmfb.com

oble Black, an attorney who once specialized in corporate security law, is one of Douglas Elliman’s top real-estate brokers, with sales totaling more than $1 billion. The Real Deal ranked him No. 11 in NYC and No. 64 in the nation. Luxury homes are Noble’s specialty. His most notable sale was Manhattan’s most expensive co-op at the time, a $54-million penthouse duplex at 785 Fifth Avenue. The spectacular penthouses at Jean Nouvel’s 100 Eleventh Avenue, Baccarat Residences, and the Four Seasons Downtown are also marketed by Noble.

THE NOBLE BLACK TEAM Three years ago, Noble Black joined Douglas Elliman Real Estate, and now has his own team of brokers within the firm, The Noble Black Team. “It’s been the best move I’ve made in my career and the opportunities that have come with it, in terms of international clientele and development, have been extraordinary,” said Noble.

DISCRETION IS KEY Ironically, discretion is what helps Black stand out, “I’ve had huge clients that I’ve worked with and in some cases, this was never traced back to me. But in virtually all of the cases it’s not even known that I was their broker.” According to Black, whose clientele includes billionaires and boldface names, it’s reassuring for buyers and sellers to know their finances and personal information will be handled professionally and discreetly. “The fact that people know they can buy or sell their home with me, and that it won’t leak to the papers is important.”

JEFFREY WANDS HELPING CRITICALLY ILL CHILDREN MAKE -A -WISH By ChristinE Montanti

W

orld renowned psychic medium, Jeffrey Wands, hosts countless galas and WALK 97.5 FM radio station events to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation Suffolk Chapter which grants the wishes of children with critical illnesses. During these sold out events, Wands speaks tirelessly to hundreds of attendees delivering personalized messages from loved ones who have passed on, providing grieving family members a level of comfort and closure. Funds that are raised through ticket sales, raffle items and Wand’s New York Times best-selling books, assist this charitable organization whose mission serves a vital role in strengthening and empowering children battling devastating illnesses. This year Delany, an inspiring 12 year-old girl from Selden, New York, who underwent a leg amputation after being diagnosed with bone cancer, will be granted her wish to learn how to surf in Hawaii. Delaney was an aspiring dancer who was introduced to dance at the young age of three. Her love for dancing prompted her to spend several hours a day taking classes. After experiencing pain in her leg from what she thought was a dance injury, Delaney received the devastating news that she had a mass in her leg that was osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. When the avid young dancer realized she might have to undergo a leg amputation, she wanted to still continue with her active lifestyle and to be an inspiration to others. Delaney said to her mom, “I would rather try at something and fail, then not be able to try at all!” After Delaney’s mom heard her say these encouraging words, the decision was made to do a rotationplasty. This procedure involves a partial amputation of the leg above the knee after which the lower leg and foot are reattached and rotated 180 degrees giving the appearance of a short leg with the foot on backwards. This allows the patient to wear a more functional prosthetic. It enables Delaney to do more high impact activities as opposed to a full amputation which limits activity.

Karine Hollander, board member of the Make-A-Wish Suffolk Chapter since 1998, gives an example of Delaney’s incredible spirit and remarkable positive attitude upon interviewing her for the foundation. “When I asked Delaney what it was like when she found out she was going to lose her leg, Delaney’s response to me was, “I felt lucky to be a candidate for such a special surgery.” “Talk about the glass being half full mindset!” says Hollander. “Some of these kids say the most profound things!” Jeffrey Wands explains how hosting the charity events for Make-A-Wish Suffolk Chapter enables him to speak to large groups and connect individuals with their departed loved ones, while simultaneously raising money to grant the wishes Social Life

“When I am having a rough day, I get to think about my “wish” and it helps me heal faster. I love swimming and surfing and going on the beach in the warm weather. It would be cool to surf in Hawaii because that’s the best place to learn how to surf. Having this unique surgery will enable me to do all the activities I really want to do. I am looking forward to getting the “wish” and I can now count down for something good to happen. If you stay positive and are determined and don’t give up easily . . . really anything is possible!” of critically ill children. “I love doing these events,” Wands reveals. “I enjoy being able to be out in the audience connecting people. I randomly select audience members and unite them with their loved ones. Although it does take a lot out of me emotionally and mentally, and it is very draining, it’s incredibly rewarding, especially when I get to see the kids actually make a wish and shift the focus off of their illness. It gives them something to look forward to and be excited about. The children absolutely love it!” There are approximately 900 people that attend these events and each audience member desperately hopes to be lucky enough to have the opportunity to speak with Wands. “At particularly large-sized events such as the ones for Make-A-Wish, I try to select as many people as I possibly can to connect with their loved ones,” Jeffrey explains. “Ultimately, I just try to balance everything out and unfortunately sometimes I am not going to be able to get to everybody, I just try to get to as many people as I can.” Aside from the charity events for the Make-A-wish Suffolk Chapter, Wands devotes much of his free time hosting many other events. “All of my events are geared toward a specific charity,” Wands explains. “I am currently scheduled to host fundraising events in Florida at a hospital for breast cancer SocialLifeMagazine.com

patients. Additionally, I am on the radio on Florida’s EASY 93.1 FM where I host charity events with the radio station.” Jeffrey is also actively involved in numerous fundraisers for New York fire departments, PTA groups and the sister station of WALK 97.5 FM called The Shark 94.3. Delaney, who is currently in remission and is back dancing again, will be traveling to Hawaii this summer. She is spending a 10 day vacation with her family where she will be taking adaptive surf lessons. All expenses for this trip are being paid for by the Make-A-Wish Suffolk Chapter which includes the family’s airfare, hotel and spending money. Delaney continues to be an inspiration to others battling critical illnesses and she reveals how having the opportunity to Make-A-Wish has impacted her positively. “When I am having a rough day, I get to think about my “wish” and it helps me heal faster. ROBERT CENEDELLA

VINNIE PACIFICO

YES ART

NEWYORKPRIMEBEEF.COM

By BEnnEtt MarCus

By JoE alEXanDEr

SLICES OF MAINE The painter Robert Cenedella, who lives and works in NYC, is spending his summer on an island in Maine with no electricity or running water. His family has owned the 40acre Burying Island for nearly 100 years. “This is where I recharge and think of new ideas. You feel like you’re in a different country when you are up here,” he said. While here, he paints without an easel; instead, he nails his long and narrow canvases on trees. He paints scenes of island sights, including stone walls, a log cabin, fallen trees, and the rugged shore line. The critically acclaimed series is called Slices of Maine.

THE TOURIST Cenedella is best known for his satirical work. The L.L. Bean catalog once featured his painting The Tourist on its cover. It humorously showed a giant lobster sitting at a table with a steamed tourist on his plate. His show Yes Art, in the 1960s, was a spoof of Pop Art. He threw freshly boiled spaghetti onto a canvas. It got more publicity than any other artist at the time, including Andy Warhol.

THE BEST OF THE BEST When Vinnie Pacifico says that his company New York Prime Beef sells the best steaks on the planet, he is merely stating a fact. The bespoke meat purveyor, which ages and hand-cuts steaks and delivers them to your door anywhere in the world, has been in business for only two years, but Pacifico has been a leader in the meat industry since the 1970s. It is his Vista Food Exchange that allows him to source the best steaks on the planet. “Because we buy everything, I have the ability to go out and get the best of the best,” Pacifico says. Interstate Foods, another business in which Pacifico has a stake, is one of the last meatindustry holdouts in New York’s meatpacking district, which has been transformed by the High Line and the relocated Whitney Museum.

GRAFFITI ART COLLECTOR

DISCLAIMER

At the Hunt’s Point Food Co-op, where his business is based, top artists have painted the rooftops in colorful graffiti, at Pacifico’s invitation. He has one of the world’s best private collections of graffiti art. “Graffiti always interested me. It’s the written word, it’s graphic, it’s expressionist, it’s colorful,” he says.

Cenedella is now focused on challenging the art world and hopes his latest piece, DISCLAIMER, will force museums to acknowledge their dual role as public authorities on art and makers of fortunes in the multi-billion-dollar art auction market. DISCLAIMER compares the evaluation of art to stock speculations, and points to the museums’ complicity in that speculation. “Critics say I’m the most widely written about unknown American artist. Unfortunately, it’s still true,” laughed the artist.

Pacifico was a drag racer in his younger years, winning a championship. “A lot of people take clients golfing; I take them to the drag races,” Pacifico says. He collects and restores vintage cars; his favorite is a 1963 Corvette split-top that he spent twelve years rebuilding. “It’s stunning—the most beautiful car.” He also flies his own plane to avoid waiting in airport lines.
