PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Hamptons summers always go by so fast! We are in mid-July and it seems like time is flying by. How can we slow it down? The simple answer is to completely disconnect: turn off your cell phone and computer. If that is impossible, try and limit your activities over the weekend, and just focus on a select few. Remember, it’s quality, not quantity. Simple, not complex. There are many ways to spend your time in the Hamptons. One of my favorites is to explore. It’s always fun to be a little adventurous and try new things, or discover new places. There are many hidden gems and secret treasures waiting for you. The summer is also the peak season for charity events. Every weekend there is a wide array of functions in the Hamptons for you to choose from. Make sure you choose well. Anyone can attend a charity event, but it takes someone who is committed and passionate about the given cause to really make a difference. It’s an epic summer! Time to put on the brakes and slow it down. Have a great July! Justin Mitchell

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”

Devorah Rose, Nomi Ellenson Photography

—Nick Carraway in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby Mid-July is magic in the Hamptons. Nick Carraway’s musings are applicable to our East End oasis. There is a sublime movie quality out here. Have you ever noticed in certain films that there is a sheen, a brightness, something similar to an Instagram filter? I think July is that filter for the Hamptons. Somehow the sun feels brighter and the sunsets burn with deeper pinks and purples. The Hamptons offers a lot of great activities and events, but lazy days are also essential. A relaxing day by the pool or on the beach is wonderful because life seems to move in a perfect slow-motion shot, allowing one to take it all in. I don’t want to miss a thing when I’m enjoying a summer day. I want to observe it all, almost bottle it so that I can carry it with me for the rest of the year. When I have a day to just rest, I like to do my (possibly cliché, but nonetheless effective) spiritual checklist: meditate, think about everything I’m grateful for, pretend I correctly preformed a Melissa Wood workout . . . even attempting these things makes me feel like I’m doing the proverbial personal oilcheck and that does go a long way. Of course, I try to find ways to give back as well even if it’s something as little as picking up trash. Removing plastics from the beach is a quick activity that will make you feel all kinds of great. I hope Social Life adds to your quiet and relaxing moments this summer. With love,

FOR #DIVAMOMS RING IN SUMMER Jen Rush has always loved fashion. But when she couldn’t find certain jewelry pieces she wanted to wear, she made them for herself. And then for others. She uses only quality materials to make classic-yet-edgy pieces that can go from day to night. A favorite? The Signature Link ring. It’s made to order in 18k yellow or 18k white gold and takes about two weeks to be made. $2,070, info@rushjewelrydesign.com

BABY TALK Take some downtime this summer to teach your baby a new skill. Baby Say More is an online course for parents who want to give their babies a head start in communication by teaching their babies sign language before the onset of spoken language. It is for new parents as well as expectant mothers and fathers. Bonus: it’s available in both English and Spanish. $99, babysaysmore.com

PERFECT PURSE What’s better than one purse? Obviously, two. That’s why the Vera Bradley I Love You pouch set is so great. You get two clutches in shades of pink that spell out “I [heart] U” when put together. Keep one for yourself and give the other to your daughter, niece, or bestie. It makes the perfect gift, and you get a little something too. $44, verabradley.com

ROBOTS TO THE RESCUE There’s nothing worse than sand getting all over your floors, and it’s nearly impossible to keep up with the mess. Thankfully, LG Hom-Bot Turbo+ with HomeView exists. The high-tech vacuum has Wi-Fi capabilities (meaning you can control it even when you’re not home). It actually sends you a real-time video of the cleaning process, so you can be sure every nook and cranny is cleaned. Oh, and it’s the quietest robot vacuum on the market on non-carpeted floors. $999, lg.com

MAGIC MOISTURIZER Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham trust dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer with all of their skincare needs. And now you can too. He created incredible skincare that helps everyone get that “Lancer Glow.” A favorite is omega hydrating oil, which was developed in response to a widespread need for advanced skin hydration and moisturizing. This blend of fermented oils rich in fatty acids, polyphenols, and antioxidants protects and saturates the epidermis (uppermost layer of skin) with intense hydration; promoting a healthy moisture balance. $75, lancerskincare.com

INSPIRING THROUGH FASHION By Jacob Puck

Elizabeth Arthur taking the Elizabeth Arthur Design Competition team to breakfast. Below, Elizabeth Arthur speaking to the Signal Hill High School assembly.

E

lizabeth Arthur is best known for her exclusive line of Kimimi swimwear, a staple on just about every luxury circuit on both coasts and the most exclusive Caribbean destinations. While “luxury” describes the Kimimi collections, one of the aspects that makes this line unique is how stunning it looks on every woman, from supermodels to plus sizes. According to Arthur, her creations are meant to exemplify and accentuate feminine beauty and confidence with a wide variety of styles and patterns—all inspired by the natural beauty of the butterfly. “Kimimi is the Sioux word for ‘butterfly.’ In the spirit of a butterfly, I want women to have wings. My swimsuit line was created to express a woman’s beauty, and to acknowledge that we are all different and beautiful in our own way.” Arthur has always had the mission of transforming each individual who wears her pieces from ordinary to extraordinary. She does this through her passion for the most exquisite materials and attention to every detail. As the summer season goes into high swing, we wanted to catch up with this designer to learn what’s up and coming, and definitely hot! Arthur as well as Kimimi swimsuits will be on hand for Social Life’s seventh annual St. Barth Hamptons event, with Christie Brinkley as host, on July 21. Speaking of St. Barth, your corner of the world was devastated last year. As a native Caribbean, how has that impacted your work? Fortunately, I have to say that Trinidad and Tobago, where my family and I are from, were very lucky to not have anywhere near the impact of some the islands. As you know, there are a number of schools and organizations throughout the Caribbean that have programs in the Elizabeth Arthur Design Foundation, and I have visited so many to do charity work since the storms. This is always important to me, but it was even more relevant this year.

Even though the islands are spread out, I imagine it’s like one big community. Absolutely. The best support you get is from your neighbors and from those who share your birthplace. It reinforces the sense of community. How is that sensibility reflected in your fashion and your designs? I always return to my home to see what is trending in local fashion as well as to show them what’s trending with me. I want other people to have the same passion that I have for this work. There are a lot of young people in Trinidad and Tobago who have big dreams, but don’t always have the access to accomplish their dreams. I want people to be able to look up to me as an inspiration. I understand you’ll be playing a big role in Miami Swim Week! Yes, I can’t wait—the third week of July, and I’ll be featured on Fashion TV which is a big deal for me. Can anyone tune in? Absolutely, just connect to fashiontv.com And closer to home, are you looking forward to St. Barth Hamptons? I am looking forward to the Hamptons event! This is such a great opportunity for me to share my dreams and aspirations as a woman, and it’s a great feeling. This is always one of my favorite events of the year! hat Goes Around Comes Around, co-founded by Seth Weisser and Gerard Maione, is the premier purveyor of luxury goods. Celebrating 25 years in business, WGACA shares 25 pearls of knowledge for all those who deeply appreciate and enjoy collecting luxury fashion.

In fashion and in life, what goes around comes around. Luxury is not determined by price, but by craftsmanship, exclusivity, and customer service. Trends come and go, but classics never go out of style. Be inspired by the past and help it guide your future — in all things, not just fashion. Nothing is more exclusive than vintage. The Hermès Birkin is a better investment than gold or stocks. True luxury lasts forever. Authenticity is such a critical element in everything that we do. In business, in life, and in shopping, you must always trust the source.

The Chanel 2.55 is the holy grail of handbags for fashion enthusiasts. The quality of leather, detail, and finishes makes this bag a truly inspiring work of art. Its name comes from the date it launched: February 1955. Silvia Fendi created the Baguette bag as a “practical bag” for women. The small bag is just as fashionable today as it was 20 years ago. The Christian Dior Saddle bag is like a Warhol — it’s a pop culture icon. WGACA has always taken pride in creating an elevated and curated shopping experience, making it an exciting and informative place to build your fashion lifestyle collections. Levi’s is the most famous and lasting of all the denim brands. For a vintage collector, everything starts with the jeans and Levi’s made the first. Vintage 501s should be the backbone of any vintage wardrobe. One of the timeless classics in a vintage collection is the perfect rock tee — expressing both amazing art and the passion for the band is the best statement and way to show your love. Fashion is about making a statement. Vintage luxury is the ultimate opportunity to convey your individual style and to express yourself. Invest in a good watch. It will last a lifetime. Our 25 years of global buying and expertise gives the WGACA shopper an unprecedented array of luxury vintage options to choose from.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

Customer service is the true backbone of luxury, and WGACA is built on the belief in personal service. The customer is always at the center of everything we do. Wearing vintage is about mixing and matching. Styling brands and eras together is the best way to be a true fashionista. Don’t be afraid to take a risk — in fashion and in life. It might have a huge return. A great luxury handbag is both an investment for now and an heirloom for the future generations. Fashion is wearable art in so many ways, and it’s good to appreciate the craftsmanship, creativity, longevity, and beauty of luxury. Invest in collectible pieces that speak to your style and express your personality. Your bag should speak to your sense of style and should be a timeless statement piece in your wardrobe. The Louis Vuitton Keepall is the perfect travel companion; it’s sturdy, reliable, and fashionable all at once. It should never be only about the brand, but about the piece.

THE MALE BAG DOG DAYS OF SUMMER By Anthony Michael EDITOR’S PICK

Schmidt’s schmidtsnaturals.com

Tani taniusa.com

It couldn’t be hotter, so you’re likely looking for cool styles that will keep you cooler . . . especially when it comes to underwear. According to Tani, and we agree, it offers the most comfortable underwear in the world. Our favorite this season is the Luxeline Collection which represents only the very finest and smoothest yarns to spin a limited edition trunk and short so unbelievably soft you’ll forget it’s there.

Truth be told, some days this summer have been hotter than the hinges of hell—and we have two months to go. If all else fails, at least smell good. Schmidt’s is the only choice for natural deodorants, and the brand has thankfully expanded to toothpaste and soap. The second best thing about Schmidt’s is its subscription services. Choose your scent, determine your frequency, and worry not! $9.99 and up

Tani also has great lounge shorts. The Amalfi Collection lounge shorts (or any of the line’s pieces) are so luxuriously comfortable, you’ll be transported to their namesake coast. They’re made from silky, breathable, eco-friendly 100% Filoscozia cotton from Italy. Why not just say what the hell and wear these duds to the next big party? Watch jealousy ensue. $95 and up

Havianas us.havaianas.com

PLANT Apothecary plantapothecary.com

Since you’ve already committed to dressing down, turn to Havianas for a new twist on an old favorite: the Espadrille. Offering extreme comfort whether at the beach or the charity auction, Havianas has evolved its collection with the perfect mix of modern and classic. Put some soul in your sole! $40 and up.

It’s so hard to find an all-natural body product that achieves the holy trinity of its purpose: getting you clean, smelling good, and not killing your skin. PLANT Apothecary’s USDA organic beauty, grooming, and bath products cater to any skin type. Start off with the Get Happy organic body wash for a lathering, moisturizing, purifying, de-stressing, exfoliating and all around, well, plant-based experience. $18 and up

Sexy Summertime Hair Editor’s Product Tip: Try the Revlon essentials detangler cushion brush (amazon.com, $9) and Ouidad advanced climate-control detangling heat spray (Sephora, $24) for smooth silky mermaid hair in any climate. Which hair products should we switch out during the summertime? Heavier products can react differently to heat. For example, pomades can get sticky on humid days. We prefer to use serums, which aren’t typically affected by temperature and will leave the hair feeling nourished while also providing styling benefits. Hair sprays can also get sticky, so try using an anti-humidity spray instead.

W

ith temperatures rising and summer plans in full effect, it’s time to switch up your hair regimen! We recruited the hair genie and founder of Butterfly Studio Salon, Kattia Solano, for her summer hair secrets and how she cares for her own mega mane. How can we protect our hair and coloring from the summer’s damaging effects? Protecting the hair is extremely important to preserve your color and avoid dehydration. The easiest way is with a hat or summer scarf, but another way is to apply a masque before entering the pool or ocean so that hair is coated with a barrier. There are also UV products that can prevent rays from damaging your hair, like Oribe Gold Lust oil (Nordstrom, $38). How often do you recommend shampooing hair? We sweat a lot during the summer, but you still want to be cautious of over-shampooing which will cause dehydration. If you are not exposed to chlorine or ocean water, try rinsing your hair and applying a conditioner instead of shampooing. If you do go to a pool or beach, rinse with cold water immediately and then shampoo and condition at night, using an overnight treatment if you need it. Otherwise, you should wash your hair as often as you typically do in other seasons.

EDITOR’S PICK

Any tips for using hot tools like curling irons and hair dryers? Summer styles tend to be more natural, making heat styling not so time intensive. Use a larger curling iron: 1¼ inches. It will give you a smooth, definitive wave and also polish the hair. You can get more done in less time. Always use a heat protectant! Finally, are there any summer hair care myths that you want to shut down? People think hair treatments and masques aren’t needed in the summer, but you actually want to quench your strands as much possible to make hair more manageable. Treat yourself to an in-salon treatment from time to time. The Milbon smoothing treatment (Butterfly Studio Salon, $60) helps with maintaining a smooth texture and is great during the summer months. Editor’s Product Tip: Rahua’s moisturizing shampoo and conditioner will deliver a punch of moisture to hair in the summer heat! To schedule an appointment at the New York City location or a private home-visit in the Hamptons during the month of August, contact the salon at 212.253.2100 or visit butterflystudiosalon.com.

AMIKA THE ACCOMPLICE HAIR DRYER For those days when you need a little extra style boost, let Amika’s Accomplice hair dryer be your hype girl. The compact dryer delivers the perfect balance of high-powered heat and airflow with two speeds and three heat settings, and you can use it on a low heat setting for quick summer blowouts. others have been quieting restless children with lullabies for generations. Insomniacs look to apps for white noise and soothing sounds to help them get an ever-elusive good night’s sleep. Research has proven that specific sounds and certain tonal qualities have a positive effect on our brains. We all have our music preferences. Noticing which sounds produce irritability and which calm us can help identify the mood for our day. Sometimes there is nothing like a fast salsa, yet other times it can be irritating. Sounds also evoke memories. The sounds that were part of positive experiences will conjure happy memories and make us seek out those sounds again. I had a serendipitous side effect when I learned to play the Native American flute to treat my facial paralysis from Lyme disease. The tone of the F-sharp flute was melancholy yet peaceful. As I played the flute, tranquility replaced agitation and pain. Wanting to embrace that tonal memory again and again, I continued to play. As my facial muscles healed, soothing music created a sense of serenity. Pleasing sounds can affect your total wellness factor. If you need tranquility, listen to sounds that calm you. This is a simple idea that promises results. Many of us aimlessly listen to music throughout the day. But when you become mindful about what you’re hearing, you will effect change. Switching away from music that you’re not enjoying to music that you love is a decision that can lift your spirits and ultimately affect your overall health. Singing has been scientifically proven to release a hormone related to human bonding. When babies are serenaded by their mothers, they are usually calmed because they had become attached to their mother’s voice. The connection between sound and the brain is an important area of neuroscience. And this subject is important for anyone with a brain injury or memory loss. Sound therapy can be an integral part of physical therapy ability’s to re-map brain responses, improving cognitive function. Sound can help to create new pathways in the brain that can replace damaged ones. Music and other pleasing sounds can open the miraculous door to healing.

Enjoy the sounds that make up the tapestry of your world. Perhaps spend time assessing those that most appeal to you. Drink in the sensation as you would a fine cabernet or delicious green minted tea. Notice your physical or emotional reactions to particular sounds and realize that these sounds are programming a positive change. Social Life

THE ARTISTRY OF HAIR REPLACEMENT PART 2 By Denise Snider

T

his summer, Social Life has gotten to know Dr. Keith R. Durante M.D., F.A.C.S., a high-powered, fellowshiptrained micro-vascular surgeon who decided to parlay his experience and expertise to help people live their lives to their fullest in a new way: hair loss management for both men and women. This also includes eyebrows, eyelashes, and beards. Dr. Durante can restore hair surgically, but he doesn’t always need to do so. He is a physician surgeon who is an expert in trichology, which is the study of the scalp. Some hair loss results from medical issues that can be improved or reversed. Medical management, as opposed to surgery, is an important aspect of Dr. Durante’s practice. But when hair transplants are called for, Dr. Durante is a superb choice. “I tell the naysayers to think about it: there’s not much on the body that’s finer than hair, and new technology eliminates some of the unnecessary and unappealing scarring

of former methods, allowing people to wear their hair very short—even a buzz cut—and no one will know they’ve had a transplant,” says Dr. Durante. “So, for single-hair transplant, who better than a microsurgeon who’s used to working with suture materials that are finer than a single hair.” The newest and most advanced method is the automated follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique. Dr. Durante harvests individual hairs from the back of a patient’s head and then transplants them where needed. His skill as a vascular surgeon is what makes him so adept at this technique. “There are many doctors who still believe in the strip method, because that’s how they were trained, which, in my opinion, is no longer necessary. But, honestly, if you were in surgical training today, you’d be learning the latest technology, utilizing the automatic follicular extraction technique,” says Dr. Durante. “The work is more tedious, but the quality is superior!” Modern surgery has evolved to include less invasive and non-invasive procedures. FUE is a non-invasive office procedure. There’s no bleeding or scarring, and results in minimal down time. And, says Dr. Durante, the technology has advanced so much that he can achieve satisfactory density for both men and women. “With the addition of protein rich plasma and low laser light therapy, we can even improve the results,” he says. Nonetheless, Dr. Durante says the average person waits five to seven years before getting a transplant because of misinformation and anxiety. Hair loss can actually lead to psychological depression. He says the longer people wait, the worse the situation will get. He recommends that a person seek medical advice at the first sign of thinning hair. With experience, passion, and insight, Dr. Durante has indeed become the go-to expert for various methods to treat hair loss, particularly if people want an undetectable, artistic result. From fixing botched hair-replacement jobs to bringing life back to eyelashes, eyebrows, and beards, Dr. Durante has perfected it all. Keith R. CHEATING By Stacey Griffith

Here are my 10 fail-proof ways to hack the system and cheat:

1

Work out both the morning of the day you plan to indulge and the day after. Go ahead and schedule those non-refundable classes if that’s the motivation you need.

2

Optimize fat-burning by eating only proteins, fats, and vegetables the day before your cheat. Once insulin is present in the bloodstream, fat-burning shuts down. During your cheat you will most likely shut it down with fun things like sugar!

On cheat day . . .

3 4

Have a 4 pm mini meal that includes fat and protein.

Drink a green juice before you head out the door in order to alkalize your body. Better yet: have a green smoothie as the 4 pm mini meal so you don’t go into the cheat starving.

S

ummer is by far my favorite season! It’s the time to rebuild your immune system, shed unwanted body matter, and kick your energy into high gear. You naturally wake up easier with that 5 am sunrise, have a lighter attitude from the sunshine, and may have a little more “you” time because the kids are busy with their camp and sports schedules. Now you can focus on vitamin Y-O-U. It’s much easier to eat healthy in the summer. Your machine is craving greens and fresh fruits (some fruits are high in sugar so don’t go crazy), but you also have a lot of parties and moments where you want to eat the Tate’s pie, the Lisa’s cinnamon buns, and the Clarissa Bakery’s pickle bread (Keith, you’re in trouble for turning me on to that). Those are all of my weaknesses when it comes to summer cheating, and that’s when I turn to my out East nutrition expert Sarah Wragge. (@sarahwragge & sarahwragge.com) to help me keep it together. I want to share with you some of her insights to better help you cheat guilt free!

5 6 7 8 9 10

Make sure you’ve had five liters of water earlier in the day and put a liter by your bed so it’s there when you wake up in the morning. Pair your meal with a digestive enzyme supplement to aid digestion. If you have red meat for dinner, you may have two enzymes. Get those greens. Eating a raw salad first will help you better digest cooked food. Choose only one: bread or alcohol or dessert. Brownie points if you drink hot water with lemon during dessert. This aids with optimal digestion.

Don’t stress out! Enjoy your cheat and get back in the saddle the next day. Choose the cheat and be empowered around your choices. Don’t view it as a downward spiral to start eating poorly. Always remember that the training you do will not show up on your body if you don’t watch your relationship with food. Please understand that the nutrition part is super important. Train your mouth before you train your body! Social Life

REVOLUTIONARY NON-SURGICAL FACE-LIFT TECHNOLOGY By Frances Gormley up to two years. Ultherapy is a pre-face-lift alternative, and it can also be used to tighten and smooth the neck, brows, décolletage, arms, thighs, and abdomen. Last week, my 90-minute face treatment was completely pain free. Dr. Avaliani first applied a numbing cream to assure comfort during the procedure, which has no post-treatment downtime. All I had to do was lie back, close my eyes, relax, and listen as Dr. Avaliani explained what she was doing. Over the next month or two, my body will continue to respond to the sound waves that had penetrated beneath the surface of my skin, forming new collagen for a more youthful look.

TEMP-SURE

A

nna Avaliani, M.D., is a prominent, non-invasive cosmetic surgeon whose Park Avenue suite is one of the few recipients of the prestigious Cynosure of Excellence Award. Among her patients are many physicians; celebrities from the worlds of fashion, sports, and entertainment; and finance executives. Dr. Avaliani’s bespoke practice offers the latest and best lasers and other technologies. In our July Fourth issue (available online), we wrote about SculpSure and CoolSculpting. In our August 10 issue, we will write about PicoSure, the technology that rejuvenates skin and removes stubborn pigmentation. For this issue, we’re focusing on Ultherapy and TempSure, two evidenced-based procedures to tighten and lift skin. Dr. Avaliani’s equipment is stateof-the-art, but technology is only a tool. It’s Dr. Avaliani herself who creates exceptional outcomes because of her education (dual board-certified physician), experience (a thriving practice), and expertise (a Real Self 100 Top Doctor for her outstanding contribution to patient education and excellence in care).

ULTHERAPY The evidence continues to grow for this FDA-approved ultrasound technology that non-invasively tightens and lifts skin by promoting the production of collagen. Only one treatment is usually necessary to lift skin over two to three months, for results lasting SocialLifeMagazine.com

This radio-frequency technology became available only in 2018. It’s the world’s first full-body skin tightening system. Its various applicators can be used to tighten eyelids, elbows, and even vaginas. Plus, it works on cellulite. Unlike other technologies, TempSure works equally well on all skin colors and skin types. While Ultherapy can lift brows, it’s TempSure that can lift upper eyelids. So I decided to have this treatment myself. So far, I’ve had only one of the recommended six treatments. During the procedure, a gel-coated patch was placed on my back, which enabled the TempSure device to create a complete energy circuit. I completely forgot it was there. Then a special gel was applied along my left brow and temple (the applicator targets the eyelids by working on the orbital bone). For my eyelift, a small hand piece was used with a gold-coated flat knob that was gently pressed and swept across my skin for a specified time, working on one side of my face at a time. Radiofrequency (RF) is a heat technology, but unlike previous RF devices, TempSure is exactingly precise. It senses the exact skin temperature and eliminates any guessing about how long the device should be in contact with the skin. My treatment took only a halfhour. Although I still have five to go, I’ve already noticed some improvement. This treatment doesn’t even require numbing cream, and there is no downtime. And as always with Dr. Avaliani’s practice, a staff member calls to see how I am doing. This is part of the attentive, personalized care I’ve come to expect. ALIGN YOUR BODY, ALIGN YOUR LIFE By Blaire Bass

MOVEMENT HEALTH ASSESSMENT A 51-year old KIMA client named Susan started to feel a pinching in her right hip during yoga class. Her mother’s osteoarthritis had led to two total hip replacements, so Susan was concerned about her own hip. Instead of waiting for the pain to worsen, she came to KIMA, where Stephanie Caudle, DPT, performed KIMA’s movement-health assessment (KMA)—a thorough, high-tech screening that finds the weak links in a person’s body.

3-D LIVE MOTION CAPTURE AND RESEARCH GRADE GAIT ANALYSIS

P

hysical therapists help their clients eliminate pain. But what if pain could be prevented? Could physical therapists use their clinical reasoning skills to identify where and why a person might feel pain in the future? It turns out the answer is yes. Social Life sat down with Tracey Vincel, PT, MPhty, CBBA, and Patricia Ladis, PT, CBBA, the co-founders of KIMA Center for Physiotherapy and Wellness, to learn more about their transformational work in helping people prevent pain from happening in the first place. Tracey explained the paradigm shift occurring in modern medicine known as the four P’s: predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory. “Part of this paradigm shift includes knowing what lifestyle factors affect our health and well-being and then embracing positive factors and avoiding negative ones,” she said. We use recent research to show our clients how science can change the way humans age—even at the most elemental cellular level.” KIMA Center for Physiotherapy and Wellness offers a unique path to keeping your health-span equal to your lifespan—with annual checkups in three domains: fuel, body, and mind. KIMA’s Three Pillars of Health Fuel: movement, breath, sleep, nutrition, hydration Body: posture, balance, movement quality, strength, flexibility, exercise Mind: stress resilience, pain neuroscience, meditation, mind training, purpose, imagery, positive thinking “Although most people typically think of physical therapy as something to seek only when they are in pain, many of our clients come back year after year for our unique assessments and to prevent the age-related issues that their parents experienced,” Patricia explained.

As part of the KMA, Stephanie used the cutting-edge Noraxon 3-D motion capture along with a multi-channel EMG to measure Susan’s joint angles, movement speeds, and muscle activation patterns. Susan also walked on a gait mat that precisely identified where her foot struck on landing, how her weight was being transferred through her body, and calculated in milliseconds the difference between the time she spent on each foot. Susan watched her avatar moving on a screen, which showed how she had lost elements of flow in her body. The detailed assessment helped Susan realize that not only was she losing mobility in her right hip, but she had also lost mobility in her her ankles from wearing high heels. The KMA also showed diminished mid-back rotatation from sitting for hours at a computer. These problems combined with weakness in lateral hip muscles led to Susan’s experiencing the beginning stages of “hip impingement.” If not corrected, this can lead to cartilage deterioration and potentially a need for total joint replacement. Stephanie helped Susan understand that healthy movement is about a variety of choices. “We want to have many different ways to do the same functional task,” said Stephanie. By restoring motion at the ankle, hip, and thoracic area, and targeting a few key hip stabilizer muscles, Susan was back to her daily yoga practice and feeling confident that she would avoid her mother’s path. Aging is inevitable, but needn’t be faced with fear. No one can stop the clock, but with the right support, we can slow its tick and enjoy life as we age with grace and vigor. editation doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s about taking time to check in with yourself on a daily basis. When we meditate, we clear our minds and connect with ourselves. The calm it brings helps improve our sleep, our focus, our interactions as well as our gratitude and joy. Just as I exercise each day, I incorporate some form of meditation into my life, whether it’s a formal sitting or a moment of awareness. The benefits are cumulative. Make a commitment to practice some form of meditation each day this summer to achieve a clearer state of mind.

Mantra Meditation Meditating with a mantra, which includes Vedic meditation and transcendental meditation, incorporates the repetition of a mantra to de-stress as you release held experiences. To try: Sit and bring the faint vibration of the mantra into your mind (usually by working with a teacher who will give you your mantra). Mantra means mind (man) vehicle (tra). Like a taxi, it drops you off at your destination: your contented mind. If you lose focus on your mantra, nonchalantly return to it.

Kundalini Kundalini meditations weave together postures, breath, and sound. To try: Kirtan Kriya is a simple but powerful meditation. Sit crosslegged with a tall spine. Repeat the mantra “sa, ta, na, ma.” With each hand, touch the tip of your thumb to the tip of your index finger as you say “sa,” followed by “ta” for your middle finger, “na” for your ring finger, and “ma” for your pinky. Chant this mantra for a total of three minutes: in a bold voice for the first minute, a whisper for the second, and silently for the third.

Zen Mindfulness Meditation Zen mindfulness is a Buddhist technique that brings you into the present moment by simply sitting while staying connected to your body and your breath. To try: Sit and become aware of your thought stream. Listen to your breathing. Be aware of your own heartbeat. Allow thoughts to arise, and when you notice them, simply let them go and return to just being. Start with 5 minutes, eventually building up to 30. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Movement as Meditation Choosing exercise methods that help you slow down enough to really focus, like Pilates, allows you to stay connected to your body, mind, and breath. As you move you gain awareness of held tension and learn to let it go. To try: As you begin your Pilates practice, observe your breath and how your body feels. Sense your breath slowing down and pay attention to your movements. Allow external thoughts to float away. Notice how your internal state begins to shift as you focus on the exercises. Feel every moment as an opportunity to return to your center and remain present to the way your body is moving.

Meditation in Daily Life Any moment can be a meditation, whether you’re playing with kids, sipping tea, enjoying a meal with friends, or spending time in nature. One of the greatest gifts of mindfulness is the ability to stay present with yourself in simple moments. This practice gives us the skills to remain present in more challenging experiences as well. To try: Put away your devices and focus on who you are with and what you are doing in that very moment. As you stay present, clear away your judgments and must-do’s. Release emotional hostility. When you access your natural state of awareness, you brighten your ability to connect to the beauty of people, things, and yourself. Erika Bloom erikabloompilates.com

TOP EIGHT REASONS I FELL IN LOVE WITH C OOL S CULPTING AT TRIFECTA SPA By Rebecca Rose

L

et’s be honest. No matter how long you diet and how hard you exercise, it’s still a challenge to get perfectly toned in certain areas of your body. Trifecta Spa has been my saving grace. This summer, for the first time in my life, I’m feeling completely confident when I walk down the beach in my bathing suit. I thank CoolSculpting and Trifecta Spa for helping me realize my weight loss goals. I now wake up feeling much more comfortable and happy in my own body. Here are the top eight reasons, I fell in love with CoolSculpting at Trifecta Spa.

1

Non-invasive. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure. It is quick and painless and requires no recovery time. This fatfreezing technology has been cleared by the FDA and is a safe and effective alternative to liposuction.

2

Convenience. Trifecta has three beautiful locations in New York: Downtown Manhattan; Midtown Manhattan; and Hewlett, Long Island. I personally go to the 57th Street location and appreciate how easy it is to get to from my Midtown office.

3

Luxury. As soon as I enter Trifecta I feel peaceful and pampered. I always feel at ease when I arrive in this beautiful and luxurious spa.

4

Customer service. The first time I called Trifecta, the woman who answered the phone was so friendly and kind. She made me feel instantly relaxed. It’s natural to feel a little anxious when getting a procedure for the first time, and I was so appreciative of Trifecta’s kind and knowledgeable staff.

5

Forefront of Technology. It’s important to me that Trifecta uses the most advanced technology when performing CoolSculpting treatments. This was the first clinic in New York to offer exclusive access to CoolAdvantage applicators. While traditional CoolSculpting yields very good, proven results of fast and non-invasive fat reduction, CoolAdvantage applicators offer more comfort and reduce the procedure time almost by half.

6

DualSculpting. I adore that Trifecta offers DualSculpting. My clinician used two machines simultaneously during my appointments. This enabled her to treat twice the fat in half the time! SocialLifeMagazine.com

7

Expertise. Trifecta has performed more than 7,000 treatments over three years. Trifecta has even qualified as a Diamond Crystal Practice, which is the highest level in Crystal Rewards, a multitiered customer rewards program that recognizes the most successful practices within the elite network of CoolSculpting centers. I believe one hundred percent in Trifecta’s expertise, and know I am receiving the highest level of service.

8

Permanent results. I have been enjoying the permanent results of this amazing procedure. I love my new look and feel more beautiful on the inside, too. CoolSculpting is exactly what I needed to achieve the body of my dreams!

PEOPLE DO JUDGE TEETH BY THEIR COVERS By Jacob Puck Dr. Fox is the only doctor in New York City who has served on the faculties of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the NYU School of Dentistry; served as an officer of Harvard University; and served on a tech board at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a leading expert on dentistry and is frequently tapped by every form of media for his knowledge and opinions. Let’s zero in on veneers. Why should patients choose you? I have teams of experienced lab technicians who work closely with me to create the correct size and shape of each veneer. When we design a veneer, we take into consideration the aesthetics of the entire face. I also integrate tried-and-true modeling with digital imaging to help the patient visualize the absolute perfect option for them. We don’t cut corners. Quite simply: we’re experts.

Dr. Steven Fox

It’s true:

there is no shortage of dentists who are willing to go to work on your mouth, whether to simply polish your smile or perform a more thorough reconstruction. Many dentists opt to differentiate themselves with “exclusive” products (read: licensing agreements and personalized labels); others rely on a short list of celebrity clients to lend credibility. In a recent conversation with Dr. Steven Fox about veneers and prosthetics, Social Life learned about the Dr. Fox’s extraordinarily impressive resumé and experience. Dr. Fox has partnered with the U.S. Government and the American Dental Association to develop many of the products used in oral care today. From the liquid calcium in adhesives for veneers and crowns to the most effective toothpastes on the market, he has been a leader in R&D. Dr. Fox has raised over $70 million to develop oral care products that rebuild, strengthen, and restore tooth structure. When Dr. Fox was the chairman and CEO of Enamelon, Inc., his scientific advisory board included a Nobel Prize winner for chemistry, the assistant U.S. surgeon general, and the dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

What holds people back from veneers? Generally, it’s misinformation. Some people think that a veneer means losing a lot of tooth structure. This isn’t true. Very little structure is lost. Some think a veneer is fragile, that it will fall off unexpectedly. This is not true in my practice because of the excellent adhesives I use. Veneers, when properly crafted and applied, look like natural teeth—beautiful natural teeth. My teams are dedicated to ensuring a great patient experience. What are the most common reasons people get veneers? To look better! Whether it’s a career, a social life, a dating life . . . there are few things that leave as indelible an impression as one’s teeth. Veneers are the perfect solution for straightening teeth without the long process of orthodontia, and the best solution for teeth that will not bleach white. We have to ask: what can go wrong when seeking veneers? Let’s take the high road—I don’t want to speak ill of my peers. What I will say is that it’s much more likely that nothing will go wrong when you rely on experience, education, and passion, and these are the attributes that I bring to this work.

CHRISTIE BRINKLEY By Devorah Rose Photography By Gian Andrea di Stefano

Bubbly, golden, shining, whimsical . . . these adjectives can describe both Christie Brinkley as well as her inimitable organic prosecco and sparkling wines. On a warm summer day in Montauk, Christie held court at The Surf Lodge surrounded by her beautiful family, friends, and lots of sun-kissed partygoers toasting her ever-growing line of Bellissima wines. The crowd had ditched the boring traditional champagne flute and were drinking from golden spouts attached to mini bottles. These new Bellissima Bambinis were the hit of the night. Table after table raised their Bambinis high as the beats of the DJ filled the party atmosphere. Christie added the sipper to the mini bottles in order to make them perfect for boat rides, the beach, or anywhere you want to enjoy some bubbly without the worry of spilling. I was impressed that Christie danced and hosted for over four hours wearing high heels (how is that for stamina?). More energized than I could ever hope to be, the 60-something stunner (who effortlessly blended in with and kept up with a raging 20-something crowd) was still going strong when I left to turn in. I caught up with Christie again on the phone. Her voice— regardless of where you run into her—-always has a warm kindness to it. Giddy with deserved pride, she explains how

SocialLifeMagazine.com

Bellisima offers healthy and delicious choices for all. “We have a sugar-free option, which is really important for those with restrictive diets. I feel so good when someone who is diabetic or needs a sugar-free option thanks me for giving them the ability to continue to enjoy celebrating with friends and family.” Christie thrives on making others happy and also values a healthy approach to all aspects of life, combining fun and well-being. Christie says, “I love the fact that Bellissima is a clean company. We care about the health of our customers. Many of our wines are organic and vegan. We also care about the world around us and are a green company.” Helping add wellness into others’ lives isn’t something new for Christie. In fact, Christie created her Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare line in order to help women age gracefully. Softening signs of aging by using her creams and makeup empowers women to feel like their best selves. “What’s exciting about my makeup is that it is both luxurious and preventive, so you can have a moisturizer that is sumptuous plus has a protective SPF. Each item has award-winning ingredients that are fantastic and healing for your skin.” When a woman feels good, she in turn has more energy to be her best self. Building confidence through beauty and healthy options is something that fuels Christie.

Christie is a lioness when it comes to her children. She is a nurturing hands-on mother to her brood. She’s her daughter Alexa’s most devoted makeup artist, “I love doing Alexa’s makeup before her shows,” Christie confesses. Recently Alexa preformed with her father, Billy Joel, at Madison Square Garden. “Their voices sound great together. Even though Alexa was performing in Madison Square Garden, she made it feel very homey, which is something that her dad has always been able to do. He can make any space feel as comfortable as a living room.” Christie has always encouraged Alexa’s musical talent. “Whenever Billy would sit down to play—even when Alexa was a little baby—I would her lay her down on the piano so that the music would literally vibrate throughout her entire body. Alexa would feel the chords of the music and she loved it,” remembers Christie. And when it comes to music, who are Christie’s go to artists? Off the top of her head, Christie says, “Alexa, Joni Mitchell, and Billy Joel.” Always with a bright smile on her face, Christie exudes joy. Asked when she is her happiest, Christie says, “I would say when I have my friends and family around me. It can be anything, but I do enjoy sitting around a bonfire. I love them, and my favorite thing is when we all sings songs together. I also love sitting on a boat fooling around. There is nothing better than being together whether you are singing, laughing, or talking.” Spending time with family and loved ones is something Christie prioritizes in her life. If you peruse her Instagram, you’ll see that image after image features her enjoying time with loved ones. And even her beauty squad—Sandy Linter and Mitch Barry—are part of her extended family. She has somehow managed to make work and play one and the same. But does she ever have time to herself ? Indeed she does. “I enjoy spending time in my garden,” Christie says, “I love clippers! I use them so much that I named myself Christie Clipper Hands! I love my vegetable garden and often pick from it for a nice home-grown meal.” When she isn’t with friends or in her garden, our favorite East End stunner spends time on the beach. What’s more relaxing than a wonderful day at the beach? “Diving into an oncoming wave is my perfect summer day,” she muses. Something that is easy to love about Christie is her passion. Whether I work with her at a photo shoot, see her marching at a women’s rights rally, follow her on Instagram, hear her talking about the importance of wellness for all, or now alongside friends avec sugar-free prosecco, I find her incredible effervescence inspiring, and I know others agree. Christie can make everyone she touches a little bit better. The world is always a better place when you add some Christie Brinkley.

THE HAMPTONS LUXURY MARKET LEADER

TIM DAVIS By Blaire Bass

Power broker and lifelong Hamptons resident Tim Davis has had an impressive 38-year real estate career on the East End. Consistently ranking among the top 25 agents in the United States, Tim is known for his expertise in all things Hamptons real estate. In his exemplary career, Tim has sold over $4 billion of Hamptons real estate, ranging from luxury estate homes and oceanfront properties to village cottages and bay-front retreats. Tim’s global network has grown to include affiliations in other markets, including John Taylor International, Verzun, and Leading Estates of the World; just to name a few. These relationships enable his clients to reap the benefit of exposing their properties to a vast international audience. At the same time, his 38 years of experience and his connections enable him to share a wealth of knowledge with both buyer and seller. Social Life sat down with Tim to learn more about how he came to be one of the top real estate agents in the Hamptons:

You’ve been with Corcoran for over a decade now. Why are they the perfect fit for you? The sale to Corcoran was strategic. Corcoran has a strong infrastructure that includes support and staff both in technology and senior management. A strong referral network was also very important to me along with a powerhouse anchor in New York. Two key components for developing a network with markets that feed in and out of the Hamptons.

You notably grew your own brokerage firm, Allan Schneider Associates, before selling the firm to NRT/ Corcoran in 2006. Tell us about that journey and some of the highlights! They were some of the best times in the market and an experience of a lifetime. We built the firm from five offices to 12 offices over a 15-year time period and hired and retained the best talent in the brokerage industry. Many of the top-producing agents in the region worked with us and some still work for Corcoran today.

The Wall Street Journal has twice named you the No. 1 broker in the Hamptons. What does it take to earn such a huge honor? Living and breathing this business 24/7 and believing in yourself. It also takes being an expert on the market and retaining the year-after-year data. I’m often asked how I remember this or that—who owned this home and that property, the historical nature of the real estate evolution on the East End. I’m an expert at one thing: the Hamptons real estate market. Timing and some luck helps too.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

I know Corcoran chooses an outstanding character trait to describe each broker. Can you tell us why yours is “commitment”? My 38-year career speaks for itself in that way, as I have proven this to my clients and customers over the years. I am committed to honoring their interests and shepherding them through a transaction, which is often one of the most important in their life.

What are some hallmark properties you’ve sold that stand out to you? From the early days, the Stone house on the ocean in Montauk and the West Banks subdivision when it was sold in foreclosure through North Fork Bank; the Westerly estate and Wooldon Manor, both in Southampton, and each of which I sold twice. Also, several oceanfront homes on Further Lane, each of which has a story behind it. I could write a book. What can sellers and buyers expect as a signature Timothy Davis touch? My personal attention to every detail in the overall marketing and the presentation is evident and recognizable.

What do you think is next when predicting how the luxury real estate market will shift out East? The highest demand for the best location and setting will continue to be the driving force. Record prices for the unique building sites and waterfront settings, whether ocean or bay.

Have your methods changed since your early days in the business? If so, how? One needs to stay relevant in a changing environment and adjusting with the times is critical. Staying true to your client and using the same basic sales skills for retaining and recruiting new business doesn’t really change.

You recently had your first grandchild. Congratulations! Is it hard transitioning within a day from one of the most powerful real estate players in the nation to grandpa on demand? My granddaughter will call me Poppy, and being a grandfather is an awesome experience. My wife of 36 years and I are fortunate to have three wonderful boys (now young men) aged

You have really taken to updating your audience on social media. What is your favorite channel for this form of marketing for you and why? I like using Instagram as it is easy to use and has immediate response. It helps me to convey some of my personality and allows me to share some of my private life with the audience. It all requires balance though.

When asked if there was anything missing in my life, my answer had always been not having had a daughter. Now I have the best of both. What’s your elevator pitch to a prospect who is thinking about calling you to represent his compound on the East End? My commitment to providing the best marketing plan and helping that seller achieve the highest possible price in the market. Any advice to rookies just starting out? ROBERT CHALONER PRESIDENT OF STONY BROOK SOUTHAMPTON HOSPITAL By Jean Shafiroff

What are the future plans for Stony Brook Hospital (SBSH)? Our hospital is a proud member of the East End community, and like most organizations in the Hamptons, we are busiest during the summer months. Our hospital is located in the center of a popular and prestigious destination. We go to great lengths to ensure that we have the appropriate staff to care for all of our patients. We exceed the expectations of our full-time and part-time populations as well as the thousands of visitors and vacationers who come to the Hamptons. Now that we are part of Stony Brook Medicine, we are better prepared than ever before to provide high quality care for our communities. Why did Southampton Hospital merge with Stony Brook Medicine? As we approach the one-year anniversary of our relationship with Stony Brook, I am absolutely convinced that this was the right thing to do for our hospital and the communities we serve.

As Stony Brook Hospital, we are now able to provide the best of academic and community medicine. Our mission has always been to provide the best possible care to our communities. This partnership enables us to provide a significantly higher and more accessible level of care to those who depend on us.

Photography by Patrick McMullan

When will we see the benefits of this relationship? We already have seen the benefits of this relationship. I can cite at least three vitally important clinical developments that have occurred as a result. The first visible benefit is The Phillips Family Cancer Center, which is currently under construction on County Road 39 in Southampton. Fueled by a very generous gift from the Phillips family, this beautiful new facility will be staffed by renowned Stony Brook physicians. It will provide treatment options, support services, and clinical trials in our community. Now cancer patients and their families will no longer have to travel great distances for chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

The second visible benefit following our partnership with Stony Brook was the establishment of a cardiac catheterization laboratory within our Audrey and Martin Gruss Heart & Stroke Center. This new cardiac program is the most dramatic example of exactly the sort of collaboration we hoped would result when Southampton Hospital joined with Stony Brook Medicine. This merger has allowed us to bring the region’s top medical services closer to our community. The cardiac catheterization laboratory has literally saved lives by enabling us to provide immediate intervention for critically ill cardiac patients. And third, I am very proud to announce that as of July 2018 we will begin to offer electrophysiology services, including device implementation and treatment for people who require a pacemaker, defibrillator, or loop recorder. These are life-enhancing services that we can now offer in our local community.

That’s all very exciting. So what is your vision for the future of healthcare on the East End? The people living on the East End of Long Island need and deserve accessible high-quality health care. Our partnership with Stony Brook Medicine provides us with a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity that will enable us to completely reimagine the healthcare system of the East End. Our vision is a healthcare system with a brand new state-of-the-art community hospital on the college campus of Stony Brook Southampton, in Shinnecock Hills. This new hospital will serve as the centerpiece of a network of robust community-based primary, secondary, and ancillary services located throughout the South Fork from Westhampton to Montauk.

What are your plans for East Hampton? A key component of our vision is the establishment of a free-standing satellite emergency department on Pantigo Place in East Hampton. Our goal is to improve and increase access to care for the East Hampton community, especially in the busy summer months. We anticipate engaging individuals, businesses, and foundations in helping us to fulfill this vision for both the new hospital and the satellite emergency department. RACHEL’S RADAR FIVE BOATING DESTINATIONS TO DOCK AND EAT By Rachel Heller

1

Navy Beach in Montauk is a beautifully scenic beach eatery, and I love visiting when I want an escape from the usual Hamptons routine. The beachfront dining has indoor and outdoor seating, welcomes kids, and is easy to access from a day of boating. You will not be judged by what you wear, which is nice because I sometimes go right from the boat wearing my bathing suit and a wrap. It’s the perfect spot for great beach pictures too! You can even have a wedding at this destination. The owners donate some proceeds to the Navy SEALS Foundation. How could you go wrong by being charitable and enjoying a sunset at the same time.

2

Sunset Beach on Shelter Island Sound is a restaurant and boutique hotel, with only 20 guest rooms. Its intimacy brings guests together, including the noteworthy and the fashionable. If you want to hide away, this is not the spot. I love to drop anchor and camp out for a little while to sunbathe. When I choose to be social, I swim into shore. I love Sunset Beach’s boutique, which carries European names like Poupette Saint Barth and cool pieces I wouldn’t find in the Hamptons You can always pack a freshly prepared meal from 75 Main and stay on board your boat.

3

East Hampton Point, now known as Moby’s, is selling for $27 million, but is open in the meantime. This spot is just so scenic, with the perfect mix of outdoor and indoor vibes. I love grabbing a drink and watching the sun go down. The water is calm here, perfect for paddling or fishing as you listen to chirping birds. You can also find small areas of sand where you can almost pretend you’re on a deserted island.

4

Gurney’s Montauk has 22 slips and a state-of-the-art marina that can accommodate boats up to 125 feet. The resort is a full-service hotel with a wonderful spa. The restaurant Scarpetta is here, and it serves great Italian food. The boutique sells the softest fleece and cashmere sweaters, which are the perfect wearable memories all year long. Many local spots are nearby, and one of my favorites is Gosman’s Dock, which has a great assortment of restaurants and cute shops. It is also a venue for events. You can get the best ice cream here. Also in Montauk is miniature golf, which I remember playing here when I was growing up. Montauk is a wonderful destination for children of all ages and the ultimate summer vacation destination. SocialLifeMagazine.com

5

Cowfish in Hampton Bays is perfect for every season. You don’t need your boat to go here, but you can use one of the many slips if you call ahead. I love the fresh, hot bread, which is always a sign that the food is going to be delicious and fresh! Sometimes the outside bar has live music, and the schedule is posted online; if you are old school, just call the restaurant to find out. My sister introduced me to this spot. We have been coming back for three years, and it gets better each time.

WHAT MOVES HER A CONVERSATION WITH JANE BABCOOK OF BROWN HARRIS STEVENS By Jacob Puck

R

eal estate professionals are people people—and that’s what makes them so great at what they do! All summer we’ve been reporting on the collaborative relationship—and expanding influence—of Mark Baron and Jane Babcook. This month, we decided to get personal and learn more about this equestrian-loving family woman, one-on-one. It’s mid-season in the Hamptons. How would you rate this year compared to the past year? I would have to say the talk in town had been the weather. June was off to a slow start with a slew of cold and rainy days, but the silver lining was for retail shops and restaurants in town, which were able to benefit from people wanting to be inside. Someone has finally flipped the switch, and I think warm weather is here to stay for the rest of the summer. Much has been made of your collaboration with Mark Baron. What are your personal thoughts on your partnership? Mark and I are going on the second year of our partnership. We have come to understand each other’s strengths. Fortunately, one of us always has the upper hand and knows when to step back and let the other take the lead. Jane, Otto, and Emma

What else is giving you creative juice in your personal life? I’ve really gotten into healthy eating. I’ve always loved to cook, and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realize that there are a lot of things I need to cut out. Also, with my daughter back in the city after a few years away, I feel more connected to what’s happening with the younger crowd and what drives them. Is it your daughter who inspires you? Yes! Emma works really hard at her job with Creative Artists Agency, goes outside of her comfort zone, and gets to the gym nearly every day.

(in the old school style) young horses either bred at the farm or from the young horse auctions in Belgium. I’m very proud of her. What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you? That I have an identical twin sister. Joan and I both live in New York, but on opposite ends of the State. We are very close and still experience some spiritual encounters only twins understand.

Brown Harris Stevens You’re an avid equestrian. How are you enjoying your love of horses these days? My family is still very involved in the horse business. I live vicariously through my sister Joan. She and her husband are near completion of a beautiful farm in East Aurora. They continue to build their North Star brand as well as their reputation for bringing along

HAMPTONS BEST REAL ESTATE AGENTS ROMAINE GORDON By Fallon Harrington

P

rior to becoming involved in real estate, Romaine Gordon was a partner-owner of a decorating and design firm based in Bridgehampton. She worked on projects throughout the Hamptons as well as all along the East Coast. Her firm participated in multiple Hamptons showhouses and a showhouse in Greenwich, Connecticut, where her own line of customdesigned fabrics was showcased. Having served as the general contractor and designer for her own East Hampton home as well as having worked with architects, builders, and tradespeople during the design and construction phase of her clients’ projects, Romaine has mastered the art of building new homes and renovating older homes. Her decorating and design background adds a high level of expertise across all aspects of a project, from concept to completion, from helping to design floor and electrical plans to choosing paint colors, hardware, faucets, fixtures, surfaces, tiles, furniture, and fabrics. Romaine brings her vast wealth of knowledge and expertise to every client she works with. Check out one of her beautiful listings:

5 WARING LANE, EAST HAMPTON Properties like 5 Waring Lane are nearly impossible to find today in the Hamptons, and those that do exist don’t come to market all that often. The water views begin as soon as you start down the driveway of this private 1.1+/- acre waterfront flag lot. On your left and directly ahead are views of Accabonac Harbor and Gerard Drive out to Gardiners Bay. The foyer of this three-bedroom, twobath traditional opens to a spacious and comfortable living room and dining area with a wood-burning fireplace; the focal points of both spaces are the windows that showcase the magnificent water views. The dining area leads to a large eat-in kitchen with multiple windows offering the same magical water views. Also located on the first floor are a large master bedroom with sitting area, a full bathroom as well as a laundry room/mudroom with access to the attached one-car garage. As you go up the stairs, you will be

mesmerized by the window at the top of the stairs, which allows a direct view to the water, as do all of the windows in the two spacious bedrooms on the second floor. One of the many features of this property that could not be duplicated on a waterfront property today is the spacious water’s edge artist’s studio. With builtins on one wall and large windows overlooking the water covering another, this light and bright space is a perfect place to spend a sunny summer day or a snowy winter afternoon. This breathtaking waterfront property is right around the corner from Gerard Drive and many other bay beaches; windsurfing, paddle-board, and kayak locations; waterfront restaurants; marinas; and some of the most amazing sunsets that the Hamptons has to offer. This home is less than 15 minutes to either East Hampton or Amagansett villages and ocean beaches. $2,000,000 Saunders & Associates 26 Montauk Highway, East Hampton Romaine Gordon Licensed Real Estate Salesperson romainegordon.com 516.317.1593 Social Life

G

ary DePersia’s name has become synonymous with the best in Hamptons real estate. From Southampton to Montauk and from Sagaponack to Shelter Island, Gary has participated in real estate transactions of more than $2.5 billion since 1995. With hundreds of his exclusive listings sold and closed, as well as matching hundreds of his own buyers and renters with the right properties, Gary’s more than 22 years in Hamptons luxury real estate has generated benchmark sales. He recently ranked 4th in the Hamptons on the Wall Street Journal ’s list of top brokers nationwide. You may have heard people refer to Gary in real estate circles as the “go-to man” in the Hamptons. To whet your appetite, take a look at one of his elegant oceanfront listings.

THE HAMPTONS POOL AN EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL OASIS By Thomas Day Lee

Sweet dreams are made of this: Stuart Andrews recommends pools as balms for the soul, such as the serene, secluded garden pool above.

T

he quintessential Hamptons summer lifestyle for many is outdoor living with a focus on poolside living. The pool and the area around it are used as “outdoor rooms,” the seamless flow between interior and exterior. If you’re considering designing and building a pool or renovating an older existing pool, you’ve got a daunting project ahead. With that in mind, Social Life sought out an expert to bring us up to speed on what’s involved in creating a special pool. We asked Stuart Andrews, the owner of Shinnecock Pools in Southampton, for his take on what makes a great pool and what he sees as his client’s chief concerns. Andrews — who has been building and caring for luxury pools in the Hamptons for more than 20 years — was forthright and even philosophical. “For many of my clients, building an amazing pool is often how they want to proclaim their success. If you’re a corporate CEO, work on Wall Street, or are in charge of a hedge fund,

you spend your days creating something that’s invisible and intangible to most people, and no one can see what you’ve made,” says Andrews. “For many successful people, creating an amazing pool is a metaphor for what they’ve achieved. And they truly are works of art. A lot of people choose to express themselves through the artistry of a pool.” Andrews, who has built and maintains some of the most dazzling pools on the East End, humbly offers that he is more of a facilitator than anything else. “My job is to listen and listen carefully to their ideas and hopes and then bring my client’s vision to reality. And that reality reveals their personal passions intensely. No two of my pools are the same; they’re like snowflakes!” he added. Even though he’s built pools costing seven figures, he prefers to focus on the intangible when discussing them. “I like to quote the author Joan Didion, who wrote: ‘A pool... is a symbol not of affluence but of order, of control over Social Life

the uncontrollable. A pool is water, made available and useful and is, as such, infinitely soothing...’ Isn’t that wonderfully put? Think about it. Water is the essence of life. Your pool offers so much. Quality time with your kids. Or imagine that skinny-dipping moment when you’re alone with your partner, late at night. It’s connecting your soul and body in a basic element, water. When immersed at the perfect temperature, with low-level lighting on a starry night, you achieve a Zen state of mind,” says Andrews. “Having a pool can be critical to your well-being,” he insists. “It’s not always about getting into your pool but knowing that it’s there for you at any time, that you can look forward to that moment after a hard day at work, to have time to yourself to be at peace, surrounded by the liquid perfection that exists in your backyard. It’s a source of calm, comfort, and belonging,” he adds. That’s never more true than on a Friday afternoon SocialLifeMagazine.com

when harried New Yorkers are chomping at the bit to get out of the city, away from their office and out to the Hamptons. “Many times the very first thing they do when they get to their house is to get out of their clothes and into their pool,” says Andrews. “And my job is to ensure that their experience, that split second of relief, is absolutely perfect. However, for people to drift into a meditative state when they get into their pool, everything must be flawless. The tile must be immaculate. The water condition must be just right. The temperature must be perfect,” he cautions. “That’s where I come in. That’s my job and frankly, my passion,” he emphasizes. Stuart Andrews is indeed the caretaker of the oasis.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT KATIE WHITE By Blaire Bass

“Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it’s not luxury.” Coco Chanel

W

e all value good advice about design. But it’s hard to find good designers who provide great design and will give full focus to your project. Social Life set out to find a true up-and-comer in the interior design field. We discovered Katie White, a respected designer who has successfully parlayed a love of interior design into a successful career. This began when Katie relocated her family from Manhattan to the Hamptons a few years ago, and transformed her new home into a comfortable yet beautiful space for her family. Her creativity and innovative approach to kid- and pet-proofing her home was admired by friends and visitors and before she knew it, she had a roster of clients asking her to do the same for them. Social Life sat down with Katie to learn more about what inspires her and how it reflects in her work. What inspired you to pursue interior design? I spent my twenties living in small apartments in the city that didn’t require much more than a bed and a desk. When my husband and I bought our first home on the East End, we spent our first weekend there sitting on lawn chairs in the living room and sleeping on the floor. The big empty rooms were waiting to be filled, and I soon found myself immersed in the design and renovation process, obsessing over the details. I realized I had found a passion in design. Is there a particular style that reflects your own personality? My style is reflective of all of the people who surround me. As I sit here, we have seven adults, four kids, two dogs, and a turtle in our house, and the space needs to be stylish, functional, and comfortable for all. Social Life

We all want our homes to be clean and elegant. How do you manage to help clients who have kids and dogs running around? In the photograph of the great room you can see two dogs coming out of the pool to drop their ball on the couch and shake on the furniture. A toddler will follow with his melting orange ice pop to make a fort with the cushions. Kids will be kids, dogs will be dogs, and spills will happen. For high-traffic areas I like to use durable rugs and performance fabrics that look great, but also clean up easily. Can you tell us more about performance fabrics? options. There is now an abundance of durable, UV-resistant, stain repellent fabrics to choose from. They look and feel just like traditional velvet, chenille, suede, linen, you name it. They can be more expensive, but the investment may be well worth it as they won’t fade or stain. How would you describe your design approach? I listen carefully to what clients tell me about their needs. I design according to each client’s taste and style to make a space that fits them. What advice do you have for people who have no background in design and want to make their home beautiful? There are so many elements that go into good design, from

proper lighting and furniture placement to fabric choices, color palette, and fixture options. Start by looking for inspiration to define your style. Design magazines, Pinterest, and Instagram are great sources for inspiration. When you find a room you are drawn to, focus on the details: lighting, colors, materials, textures, layout. Then make a plan of action for your space. A good designer can help with this next step to tie everything together in your style to make your home look beautiful and cohesive. Do you have a favorite interior in the Hamptons? A restaurant or shop perhaps? I love the interiors of Baron’s Cove in Sag Harbor. Like the town, it is nautical and cozy, with some unexpected fun details, like the pineapple wallpaper. Social Life

We love your clean and modern yet comfortable style. Can you tell us more about this? Comfort is integral. I love clean, modern lines, and I incorporate textures, paints, wallpapers, and fabrics that work together to create a warm space. I also find that mixing wood and metal finishes helps add depth and interest to a space.

TRAVELING TO SERBIA By Joe Alexander

Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theater, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City, and currently resides in Manhattan and Southampton.

BELGRADE There is nothing like an invitation to a royal wedding to get you to Serbia, unless you like to party; then spending any weekend in Belgrade is well worth the trip. From dusk to dawn, the nightlife in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, sizzles, making it one of Europe’s premier see-and-be-seen destinations. Dozens of edgy nightclubs are making waves on party boats along the Danube River in the Dorcol neighborhood, and on the Sava River in the Savamala district. The streets are bursting with beautiful people and live music. Denizens of the night are flocking to this ancient city that has finally broken free of its Communist past and entered into a new renaissance of food, music, art, and design.

HISTORICAL SITES Add in a plethora of historical sites, parks, and scenic views of the rivers that wend around the town from the Old City walls, whose foundations date to the 15th century, and you have something for everyone. For those of us who relish exploring narrow cobblestoned streets, sipping exquisite coffees in quaint cafés while soaking up thousands of years of history — dating back to 6,200 BCE — this is a city to love. And like Prague or Budapest, you can do it in three days.

THE ROYAL WEDDING I went to Serbia to attend the royal wedding of Prince Philip of Serbia and Danica Marinkovic at the Cathedral Church of St. Michael the Archangel. Known locally as Saborna Church, it is one of Belgrade’s most beautiful Serbian Orthodox churches.

The fairy-tale wedding for 800 guests included over two dozen members of Europe’s ruling monarchies, including Queen Sofia of Spain (Philip’s godmother), and HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden (the maid of honor), and HRH Prince Peter (the groom’s brother and best man). Prince Philip is the son of Crown Prince Alexander of Serbia and Princess Maria da Gloria of Orleans, who is now married to the Duke of Segorbe and lives in Spain. The wedding, officiated by His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej, was the first Serbian royal wedding since 1922, when Philip’s great-grandparents, Alexander and Queen Maria of Yugoslavia, married. This was a major event for the entire country, and the young royals incorporated-centuries-old traditions into their modern wedding. After the church ceremony, everyone headed to the White Palace for a reception and dinner. Prince Philip toasted his bride saying, “Thank you, Danica, for all your love and for making me the happiest man in the world.” HRH Crown Prince Alexander said, “We are here to celebrate the beginning of Philip’s and Danica’s life together, for which we wish them to be filled with happiness and love. It is my privilege to welcome Her Royal Highness Princess Danica to our home.” After the wedding, Prince Alexander and his wife, Princess Katherine, traveled to the United States to host a benefit for their organization Lifeline New York, which helps orphans and children needing medical care in their native land.

THE PALACES The royal wedding may be over, but happily, you can visit Belgrade’s spectacular Royal Palace compound. There are guided tours every weekend from April through October. The two-hour tours include the Royal Palace and the White Palace. Professional guides talk about the history, art, and culture of the palaces and the region.

THE ROYAL PALACE The Royal Palace was built between 1924 and 1929 with the private funds of His Majesty King Alexander I. Designed by the architects Zivojin Nikolic and Nikolay Krassnoff of the Royal Academy, the palace is surrounded with pergolas, terraces, swimming pools, and pavilions. The compound offers magnificent views of the ridge of Dedinje Hill, Kosutnják Forest, Topcíder Park, and Avala Mountain.

THE WHITE PALACE

JOSIP BROZ TITO

The White Palace, where the royal wedding party was held, is a separate building in the compound. It was built during the 1930s because the king wanted his children to have their own homes when they came of age. History intervened. The newly married Prince Philip actually lives in London, but you can visit the palace’s classically styled rooms. Dignitaries from Queen Elizabeth II to President Richard Nixon were among the famous people who have stayed at the palace on official business. Both palaces are filled with paintings, lavish furnishings, and objets d’art.

You can see where President Tito had symbols of the monarchy, including the double-headed eagles, painted over and replaced by the red Communist star in the ceiling. Crown Prince Alexander and his wife, Crown Princess Katherine, who many in the country call King and Queen, live there today, although Serbia is not a constitutional monarchy.

HOTELS & RESTAURANTS

THE FOUNTAIN OF TEARS

There are a lot of new hotels in Belgrade. The best are Square Nine, the Metropol Palace, the stylish Saint Ten (which has a chic lobby lounge) and the legendary Hotel Moskva.

The Fountain of Tears in the Royal Palace is an exact replica of The Fountain of Tears in Bakhchysarai Palace in Crimea, which the Khan commissioned to weep forever in remembrance of the death of the Polish harem slave he fell in love with. King Alexander commissioned his replica to weep forever for Grand Duchess Tatiana, Tsar Nicholas II’s daughter, whom he had hoped to marry before she was murdered during the Russian Revolution. The fountain also served a practical purpose. The constant murmur of the water prevented eavesdropping on the monarch. The adage “If these walls could talk,” is apt, as both Josip Broz Tito and Slobodan Milošević, two famous Serbian presidents, used this room for private meetings.

I opted to stay in the city’s iconic grand dame, the Hotel Moskva, which was built in 1906. It escaped being bombed by the Nazis because Hitler wanted to station his officers here. The hotel roster of famous guests have included Albert Einstein, Brad Pitt, Luciano Pavarotti, Ray Charles, Kirk and Michael Douglas, Orson Welles, Maxim Gorky, Robert De Niro, Alfred Hitchcock, and Jack Nicholson. The hotel exudes history and Old World charm, although it has been completely updated with all the modern bells and whistles. The hotel’s pastry shop is the best in town: try the macarons and the “Moskva snit” cake that’s truly heavenly.

MAXIM GORKY SUITE All hotel rooms are not created equal, so be sure to get a duplex suite if you’re traveling with a friend or your family. We opted to stay in the suite named after the Russian writer and hotel guest Maxim Gorky. The other premium suite is named for another famous guest, Indira Gandhi. My suite was a double-height wonder, with views from ten windows facing the square and the landmarked Terazije Fountain, which stands guard in front of this imposing edifice of pale yellow and green lacquered bricks. This suite is perfect if you are bringing the kids or just like extra room, as it boasted two bedrooms, two baths, a living room, and three TVs.

CAFÉ MOSKVA Café Moskva is one of the city’s most popular meeting spots. It has a grand red lounge with both outdoor seating and interior spaces with enormous windows facing the street action. There is live piano music at breakfast, tea, and cocktails, adding to the charm of this bustling café. It’s also a great spot to refuel any time of day, with prime people-watching. Charming and refined, this place is popular with locals as well as tourists.

THE CITIES TOP RESTAURANTS Madera is one of the city’s top restaurants and features excellent local fare. Try the steak or the perch, and definitely order a sampling of appetizers that includes fabulous foie gras and a red pepper purée dish that you’ll rave about. Homa is a haute cuisine temple with a contemporary and casual vibe. The food here is adventurous and almost everything is accompanied by a sorbet or ice cream. The truffle and cheese balls filled with goat cheese and the bouillabaisse with Adriatic fish were both memorable as was the three-layered chocolate dessert served in its signature clay pot. Ambar is the place to sample Balkan cuisine. This chic spot presents traditional Balkan hospitality in a chic, sophisticated, minimalist setting. You can try different dishes from the sampling menu and sip traditional Serbian spirits called “rakias” on the terrace overlooking the Sava River.

WHAT TO DO IN BELGRADE UNDERGROUND TUNNELS Belgrade’s vast network of underground tunnels provides a fascinating look into the country’s past as a pawn of various empires, from the Romans to the Germans; the latter hid in the tunnels as WWII was coming to an end. Most recently, citizens sheltered in the city’s underground bunkers during the NATO bombing of 1999. While not the entire underground network is open to the public, there are various tours available to visitors.

KALEMEGDAN PARK Kalemegdan Park is Belgrade’s most important historical place, a vast green space filled with monuments and a fort that is perched on a cliff overlooking the junction of the Sava and Danube rivers. First settled thousands of years ago, the park is home to remnants of Serbia’s long history, from a Roman well to an Ottoman tomb to the Kalemegdan Citadel, which was the site of over 100 battles over the centuries. Not only a historic site, the park also has a zoo and an amusement park with a rare Ferris wheel. There are also sporting activities, cultural events, performances, and places to eat.

BELGRADE FORTRESS Belgrade Fortress was founded by Celts in the third century B.C.E., and for centuries, the city’s population lived only within its walls. The fortress is the core of Belgrade, and the city’s long history was concentrated there until modern times. The Byzantines rebuilt the fortress around 535 A.D., and it suffered continual destruction over the centuries, including damage inflicted during the First and Second World Wars. Nowadays, the fortress functions as a major cultural and historical center. Openair performances on the site have included dance festivals and concerts by musicians, including Amy Winehouse, Moby, Green Day, Whitesnake, Iron Maiden, and Interpol.

THE BOHEMIAN QUARTER The Skadarska district is Belgrade’s bohemian quarter, home to poets, artists, writers, and musicians. In fact, Skadarska and Paris’s artsy Montmartre officially became sister locales in 1978, attested to by commemorative plaques in both places. This area is in Stari Grad, the Old Town, and was originally a shabby Roma district packed with dens of ill repute that were eventually replaced by more respectable establishments. Today, the happening neighborhood boasts some of the city’s best restaurants, cafés, art galleries, antique shops, and nightlife. Republic Square, Belgrade’s central plaza, is one of the city’s most popular gathering places for locals.

The Temple of Saint Sava

THE TITO MUSEUM Belgrade is not as flush with museums as are other European cities like Paris, London, or Rome, but this quirky and slightly disturbing museum dedicated to Yugoslavia’s Socialist era mainly contains artifacts from the life of Josip Broz Tito, the Communist dictator from 1944 to 1980. Here you can see the mostly unimpressive gifts that he was given on his travels — I assume the better ones were sold off — plus his military uniforms and, in the House of Flowers, his final resting spot.

MILLENNIUM TOWER This magnificent tower dating from 1896 was built as a memorial in celebration of 1,000 years of Hungarian settlement in the region. Built on the ruins of a medieval fortress, the tower is unofficially known as Janos Hunyadi Tower, after a Hungarian military figure who died there in 1456, more than 400 years before the tower was built. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Today, the tower houses an art gallery that hosts regular exhibitions, and the views of the city from the top are spectacular, particularly at sunset.

THE SAVA TEMPLE The Temple of Saint Sava is the world’s second biggest Orthodox church, dominating Belgrade’s skyline. Built on the location where St. Sava’s remains are believed to have been burned in 1595, the church’s history is unusual — construction began in 1935 and is still ongoing today because Serbia’s tumultuous history often got in the way of completion. Interruptions began during World War II when Belgrade was bombed. The German army used the unfinished church for parking; after the war it was used as storage. Work on the temple finally resumed in 1985, and the main structure was mostly complete by 2004. Work on the interiors is still in progress. Serbia is an off-the-beaten-track destination, well worth a long weekend visit. If you make it to the Royal Palace, tell HRH Princess Katherine I sent you. serbia.travel

HOW TO BUY A MERCEDES-BENZ IN “THE EXPERIENTIAL AGE” By Matthew Berritt

hat’s the good of having an S Cabriolet if you can’t cruise (or rocket) down the Autobahn at least once? Here’s a stepby-step itinerary for traveling to Germany to pick up your Mercedes. This is the way you should do it, sparing yourself from Mercedes’ suggested, yet uninspired, itinerary. (As experienced in October 2017)

1. Fly to Frankfurt (not Munich, as Mercedes may advise). Don’t rent a car. Just download Blacklane, a ride-hailing app, which Daimler AG happens to co-own. It’s as convenient as Uber, but without the pesky risk of violent assault by an un-vetted driver. Plus, Blacklane boasts 24/7 human customer support. My travel companion and I opted for first class: a gleaming Mercedes Benz S-Class sedan. It’s a bit over a two-hour drive to Stuttgart, where the Mercedes factory is located, so comfort counts. 2. Spend one night in Stuttgart at Althoff Hotel am Schlossgarten. Dine early at Zirbelstube, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant. Tomorrow will be a long and glorious day. 3. Reserve, in advance, another Blacklane vehicle to take you to the Mercedes-Benz Center of Excellence. When you collect your

new vehicle, make sure to ask your dedicated concierge to program your travel itinerary into the car’s GPS navigation system. This is a must.

4. Drive to Schwangau (approximately two hours), the magical little town where Neuschwanstein Castle is located. In case you are not familiar, that’s King Ludwig’s home — the one that served as inspiration for Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle. There are a number of cozy boutique hotels in this idyllic town, but only one I recommend: Hotel Das Rübezahl. Owned and operated by the hospitable Thurm family, it’s a fairy-tale come to life, boasting jaw-dropping direct views of the Bavarian Alps and Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle. Here, you should spend at least three nights. While in Schwangau, leave your new car parked and take advantage of the hotel’s chauffeured BMW Barockengel. For modernists, they also offer a gleaming new i8. From the hotel’s thematic suites and magical grounds to its billion-dollar view, Das Rübezahl seamlessly blends rich Bavarian history with all the creature comforts you’d expect from a superior hotel. Dedicated to promoting relaxation and overall wellness, the spa is neither to be missed nor underestimated. Explore its winding halls, delightful meditation gardens, salt grotto, and a stunning heated pool, where you are invited to take a royal Social Life

few blocks from the Strasbourg Cathedral and La Petite France, a historic medieval neighborhood of cobblestoned streets and halftimbered houses, now populated by cafés and shops. Remember, Strasbourg is considered the birthplace of foie gras; I recommend walking just past the cathedral and dining at Chez Yvonne.

5. Speaking of serious dining, now cross the boarder into Strasbourg, France (approximately three hours). Le Corbusier once said, “In Strasbourg, the eye is never bored.” This will hold true, come rain or shine, and if you’re truly fortunate, you will enjoy both. Stay at Hôtel Cour du Corbeau, in the heart of the city and be utterly transported. Imagine yourself wandering around and getting lost in the corridors and passageways of a 16th-century building, surrounded by memories of days gone by in an inn that hails from the days of tsars and princes. Cour du Corbeau is home to a dramatic tower suite that fulfills the promise of its namesake: Voltaire. Located on the top floor, this imposing flat overlooks a lush courtyard that seems to scoff at the passage of time. The hotel sits only a

6. Last stop: Frankfurt. You’ll drop off your new wheels at the shipping facility. From there, take a taxi (or another Blacklane) to Villa Kennedy, a Rocco Forte Hotel. Once a grand family home, Villa Kennedy is now the embodiment of modern Frankfurt, equal parts style and substance. Built in 1901, the absolutely beautiful Frankfurt hotel was renamed in honor of President John F. Kennedy, who visited in June 1963. It has been extensively restored but still retains its warmth and patina. The hotel’s tranquil Villa Garden is ideal for al fresco dinner and drinks in the warmer months. Villa Kennedy serves as the perfect halfway house between Europe and the United States. Fun fact: I counted more photographs of Marilyn than of Jackie.

The hotel has created the cultural center as a way for guests to have an authentic and connected experience. Those who choose to truly immerse themselves in the culture of the island can take classes in star navigation, feather art, the Hawaiian language, Hawaiian quilting, and Hawaiian jewelry making, to name a few. Children seem to really enjoy jewelry-making. “There are people I’ve married on the grounds that come year after year and are now taking classes or making jewelry with their children,” shared Uncle Earl. LUXE AND LEISURE IN THE CITY BY THE BAY By Anthony Michael

T

he colorful Mission and Castro neighborhoods. The Presidio, a 1,500-acre park. The splendor of the Golden Gate Bridge and the breathtaking views from its ruddy expanse. The beaches and parks on both sides of San Fransisco Bay. These are all reasons why those with wanderlust have always been attracted to San Francisco, and why they inevitably choose it as a preferred long-weekend destination or a jump-off locale to more rustic adventures. In close proximity to a collection of National Parks, the bucolic Napa Valley, and the incomparable Big Sur, the City by the Bay is downright unavoidable. We could insert a joke about Alcatraz here, but, let’s face it, for the uninitiated, a trip to the Rock is requisite. The grandeur and expanse of San Francisco, however, can become daunting when you’re actually in the thick of its hilly vastness and not merely planning by the map. And, the only thing more difficult about creating an itinerary for a long weekend in San Francisco is choosing where to stay—the possibilities are endless.

But here’s a tip: choose a locale that lends itself to easily getting from point A to point B, quickly getting out of the city when you’re ready to move on, and taking in the city’s spectacular ocean views. The latter is a frequent miss among travelers, mainly because the options for water views are so limited.

The Argonaut, a Noble House Hotel, is an unrivaled boutique property in Ghirardelli Square (yes, the chocolate used to be made right here) that fits every bill. Tucked away from the density and hustle-bustle of the downtown, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more choice location and a property that will suit a laundry list of needs. Living up to its name in honor of a mythic band of sailors, the property is steeped in nautical imagery, a reminder that this is, after all, a seaside city. Located in Fisherman’s Wharf, the Argonaut is one of those infrequent places in San Francisco that truly merits a term like iconic. A former warehouse built in 1907, it’s among a rare breed of hotels that boasts views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate, and the glittering blue breadth between the two. Want a city scape? You can request that, too. Among its many features, one of the most notable is its sense of Barbary Coast isolation. That said, it is very much at the heart of everything that makes the city special, as evidenced by the trolley car terminus just outside its front door. At once both family-friendly (including the canine set) and luxe, the Argonaut is known just as much for its amenities as for its oneof-a-kind location. Unlike most boutique hotels, which tend to be claustrophobic, the Argonaut’s designers decided to be generous with its layout and create breathtakingly large suites, many with connecting rooms for maximum accommodation. A favorite is the Argonaut Suite, featuring an incredible, unobstructed panoramic

view of San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the historical ships along Hyde Street Pier. One perk in particular is the oversized bathroom with a glass-enclosed shower and a separate spa tub. You’ll appreciate this after a day of trekking up and down the area’s ubiquitous hills. You’ll also love the Argonaut’s in-room magical spa treatments. Using wild-crafted, natural, and organic ingredients, true experts will soothe your soles, shoulders, or backs in the comfort of your room. Known for its exceptional world cuisine, San Francisco is manna for foodies. Blue Mermaid, the Argonaut’s house restaurant, has taken its place on the list of the city’s most notable restaurants. The setting here has an authentic, richly textured oceanfront ambiance. It is accented with sea-faring touches like rough-hewn timbers, thick braids of rope, and renderings of mermaids. My advice is to definitely do the cioppino. This authentic fish stew originated a block away from the Argonaut, and Blue Mermaid has elevated the dish to a new lusciousness. There are few cities in the U.S. as storied, beautiful, and luxurious as San Francisco. A stay at the Argonaut will make your experience all the more exceptional.

VIKING CRUISE MAGIC SMOOTH RUNS THE WATER By Anthony Michael

Viking longship entering Budapest

I

f you still watch network TV, you’ve likely seen the ubiquitous advertisements for Viking river cruises. Languidly sailing down any one of Europe’s many famous rivers, the vessels are one with the landscape, typically a mosaic of rolling hills, lush vineyards, medieval castles, seats of government dating to the Renaissance, and endless church spires. Relaxed, older-ish vacationers are portrayed sitting on sundrenched decks drinking goblets of wine, feasting on haute cuisine in a pleasant dining room, or resting in well-appointed cabins. The same tourists are gleeful among the windmills and tulips of The Netherlands, hiking into a German monastery, or retracing the footsteps of the von Trapp family in Salzburg, Austria. The latter is how those ads finally hooked me. I’ve always wanted to stand in the exact spot where Maria taught the chil-

dren to sing “Do, Re, Mi” and to understand for myself what lured her down from those iconic hills. Captain Georg von Trapp was indeed fetching enough, but what exactly was it about that little Alpine town that captured her heart? The answer? Everything. Such was the case with the cruise itself. Never having embarked on any cruise, I was admittedly skeptical about this variety. The images on TV, the Internet, and brochures looked impossibly perfect. For instance, wouldn’t those rooms be absolutely miniature? Plus, I’m fully aware of what it takes to keep a mainland restaurant stocked with fresh and local food, let alone the galley on a flat boat. And, finally, all those happy holidaymakers looked to be outpacing me in age. So, here’s the bottom line: the images don’t lie. Seeing Europe (or parts of Asia) from one of its rivers is perhaps one of Social Life

the most beautiful (and expedient) ways to travel. The food— and service—are exceptional. And, yes, the typical Viking cruiser has achieved middle age, and in many cases, beyond. But I was pleasantly surprised to find a diverse group of people, including many couples in their thirties and forties—many of whom were struggling to keep up with the older set. The day excursions (a must-do for ultimate enjoyment) were more strenuous than you’d think, and the booze pours were otherworldly (more to come on that, too). Critical to my enjoyment, however, was the complete absence of children. While there are a number of outfits that boast the virtues of their offerings, Viking is the largest and rates high for dependability, luxury, a vast array of amenities and options. The company has recently entered the ocean cruise space with some truly exotic ships and routes, but Viking continues to be SocialLifeMagazine.com

celebrated (and it is rated No. 1 by just about every source that matters) for its river cruises. Pull up a map and see for yourself what ports-of-call to expect from a trip down the Rhine, Douro, Elbe, Rhone, or Seine rivers. Other tours take advantage of a collection of waterways, such as those in Russia, Ukraine, and even Egypt, China, and Cambodia. To see Salzburg, you guessed it: I opted for the picturesque Romantic Danube River Tour. In addition to discovering where the hills are truly alive with the sound of music, I experienced the intensity of historic Nazi Germany in Nuremberg; the exquisite architecture and gardens of Vienna, Austria; and the unmatched collision of old and new culture in Budapest, Hungary. In between, I soaked up some of the smaller, but not lesser, sites along the way. So, the boat. Ours was the longship Atla, the typical (al-

though not ordinary) Viking offering. Named for the Norse goddess of water and one of the nine wave maidens who live at the bottom of the sea to ensure that the Earth and its people achieve fertility and harmony, the ship lived up to her name. With more than 60 ships, each with its own character and length of service, there are plenty to choose among. First thing’s first. Just about everything about service on the longboat was elevated to five-star status. My companion and I had needs—and those needs were all met. We requested to both board and disembark earlier than our fellow travelers. We asked for some help in planning daily excursions. We had fussy eating habits: I wanted everything to be ultra-local, while my companion took veganism to a whole new level. The staff was accommodating and flawless in their execution. Speaking of flawless, they exemplified the term ship-shape, ensuring that everything, from deck to cabins, was spotless. While all cabins are charming, most do fall into the cozy category. This is not atypical of a boat this size, so at a minimum, we wanted a Veranda Stateroom, which features a balcony. A more comfortable cruise can be had with some of the

handful of suites (our advice: go all in on an Executive Suite). Regardless of the cabin, you’ll find all the amenities you’d expect from a luxury hotel: upscale Freyja bathroom products, a safe for valuables, laundry service, a flat-screen TV with a selection of movies that align with your daily excursions, surprisingly comfortable linens, and daily treats ranging from Champagne to chocolate to fresh fruit. Not-so-reliable Internet was available, although a hotspot is recommended. One peccadillo of note was the total exclusion of room service in a Veranda Stateroom—this bothered us for only a split second. It would have been annoying to jockey a full meal in the room and then to navigate a narrow hallway full of dirty dishes waiting to be picked up. Besides, our hunger forced us to one of the many dining options. Viking believes that dining is an important part of the journey and their chefs are clearly highly trained. Opting for Viking is opting for both all-inclusive and highly personalized. Both in the main restaurant or the more bespoke Aquavit Terrace our wish was the command of the chef and the servers. carefully curated meal after a daily check-in on ingredients and options. Otherwise, daily local options supported a standard menu for those less adventurous. Speaking of options, be sure to spring for the Silver Spirits Beverage Package—at €150 this extra will pay for itself in the first day or two. The house wine and beer are perfectly suitable for the uninitiated; however, with the Silver Spirits, every time you order a glass of the finest, you inevitably end up with the entire bottle. In our case, the cup runneth over, and it’s perfectly acceptable to bring this to the room and out to your private deck to imbibe to your heart’s delight. Beside eating and drinking, there isn’t an abundance of onship activities. A handsome library is good for reading, as is the upper deck that is encircled by a walking path and abutted by an herb garden. For this reason, when planning a Viking cruise, it’s important to review and take advantage of the many excursions offered. Frankly, this is why we chose this sort of holiday in the first place: to learn something important. For instance, we spent a day observing the bizarre rally grounds for Hitler’s supporters as well as the courtroom where the most SocialLifeMagazine.com

powerful among them were tried and sentenced. We got just enough of Munich, a city that was largely destroyed by World War II, but has hummed back as an international hub of culture and fashion. In Budapest, the haunting Shoes on the Danube memorialized the city’s Jews who were slaughtered during the war. These and many, many more opportunities should be chosen in advance. Each excursion was prefaced the night before by an expert in history who gave an overview of the next day’s activities while we enjoyed our fine wine. If we missed the talk, we could rely on the delivery to our room of a full itinerary for the next day, including weather, food options, tips, and history. I told myself I would never, ever take a cruise. The kids. The horror stories of food poisoning or running aground. These all swirled in my head as I convinced myself, a history buff who enjoys a tad more refinement, that this would be different. I was right. Viking River Cruises vikingrivercruises.com

THE HIGH LIFE IN TURKS AND CAICOS By Jacob Puck

T

here are two descriptive words that immediately come to mind when thinking about Turks and Caicos: magic and luxury. This outlier that straddles the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea had the good fortune to withstand the brunt of the storms that ravaged much of the area last year. It has since solidified its reputation as one of the most desirable vacation destinations for the jet set, those who are always on the hunt for the hottest, most exclusive tropical getaway. The luxury of the islands is low-key which, in turn, supports the pristine environment. Of the 40 islands that make up the archipelago, only eight are inhabited. And, even on these the breathing room is ample. The colors of Turks and Caicos, from the ocean to the sand to the trademark flora, are so rich and vibrant, you could easily be convinced that you were smack in the middle of a postcard. Yes, it’s nice to know there are corners of the world where reality is just as beautiful as any fiction that can be conjured. And, to the delight of Hamptonites, the latest news out of Turks and Caicos is no fairy-tale. “While a number of luxury properties bring ultimate sophistication and exclusivity to Turks and Caicos, just the name Ritz-Carlton adds a new mystique to the island offerings,” said Pamela Ewing, the regional marketing manager for the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board. “The Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Residences will be the first luxurybranded homes to be built on the islands, and we are thrilled that the brand will be expanding its portfolio with this exciting property.”

Of particular note are the residences, which, along with the hotel and its various amenities, will be located in Providenciales (aka Provo) on the world-famous Grace Bay. Here, owners will live The Ritz-Carlton experience every day. Described by the company as the most exclusive development on the island, the 60 condominiums will extend along 688 linear feet of oceanfront property. Each private residence will have breathtaking views, affording a truly unrivaled Caribbean experience. “This new construction promises to be absolutely spectacular,” said Ewing. Ewing reported that another project that’s piquing the interest of luxury seekers is a new Six Senses Resort and Spa, set to open on Salt Cay, one of the smallest and most exclusive islands in the Turks and Caicos archipelago. Known for its exquisite locations, Six Senses is committed to ultimate luxury and comfort and delivers an all-encompassing and unique range of experiences to stimulate, energize, and restore. “We are excited that these investments are being made in Turks and Caicos, adding more high-end products to the destination,” said Ewing. “We welcome them and are looking forward to working together to continue the type of offerings that have become expected from Turks and Caicos as a preferred destination for the luxury traveler or investor.” Turks and Caicos Tourism turksandcaicostourism.com Social Life

Of course, as Hamptonites, we know that there is nothing more seasonal and fresh than a delicious ear of corn from your favorite farm stand. But, how do you make your corn pop? First off with flavor, and we’ll get to that in just a minute. When it comes to serving corn, it’s important to know the following tips and tricks: 1. Shuck it where you buy it. 2. Avoid corn with small brown holes in the husk, especially towards the top as they may be wormholes. 3. OUT EAST ROSÉ A PERFECT PAIRING WITH THE HAMPTONS By Lizabeth Zindel

T

o celebrate the kick-off of rosé season, a new premium rosé wine called Out East announced its official launch this summer. The Côtes de Provence rosé comes from an estate in Monfort-sur-Argens, France, nestled in the heart of Provence and one-hour north of Saint-Tropez. The delicious rosé is the brainchild of Maggie Slavonic, an Emmy Award-winning creative director and Patrick Mitchell, the managing partner of a strategy and marketing company. “Out East was conceived while we were enjoying rosé poolside in Bridgehampton with an ambitious notion: how can we combine the idyllic settings of the Hamptons with the best-tasting rosé in the world?” said Mitchell, an Out East co-founder. The founders aimed to create a beautiful rosé whose form and function were emblematic of the relaxed luxury lifestyle of the Hamptons and comparable enclaves around the world. “The idea that you can be out East anywhere was part of the development process of the brand, and care was taken to ensure every detail—from the label and shape of the bottle to the perfect tint for this sumptuous rosé—was consistent with a high-end luxury product with universal appeal,” said Mitchell. Dry, crisp, and brimming with bright mineral tension, Out East is an exceptional Provence rosé, featuring complex aromas of white peach, citrus zest, and wild red berries, and lifted by hints of white flowers and baking spices. The grapes come from vines grown in the limestone and clay soils of the small territory known as Green Provence. The special soil and cool climate give the wine extraordinary freshness and vitality. During the two-year development process, the founders worked side by side with their growers and winemaker to ensure they were harvesting and bottling the best tasting rosé possible. The complexity of Out East Rosé pairs perfectly with a variety of foods, especially dishes with assertive and spicy flavors. “Classic Mediterranean dishes featuring garlic and hearty herbs such as thyme, rosemary, and oregano tend to pair very well with our wine. Simple shellfish and fish dishes prepared with olive oil and garlic can also be a perfect match,” said Mitchell. This summer Out East Rosé has exciting events planned in the Hamptons and New York City to commemorate the magnificent launch. “We will be hosting parties from casual beachstyle clambakes to intimate dinners,” said Mitchell. The popular newcomer will also be sponsoring philanthropic events, including ARF’s Bow Wow Meow Ball and the St. Barth Hamptons party with Christie Brinkley. SocialLifeMagazine.com

LESSING’S HOSPITALITY GROUP BRINGING NEW MEANING TO CHRISTMAS IN JULY By Jacob Puck

Deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa la . . . Stop! Rewind that song, you say!? Well, Jennifer Cantin, the director of marketing and development for Lessing’s Hospitality Group, the area’s premier luxury caterer, says not so fast. “I get it,” Cantin said in a recent interview with Social Life. “I love the holidays and all the parties just as much as anyone, so now may seem a little early to focus on December fetes. But as the saying goes, ‘The early bird catches the worm.’ ” Lessing’s, with nearly 130 years of provenance and family ownership, is likely behind any number of the parties that you’ll attend this summer throughout Long Island. However, if the experts at Lessing’s are beginning to turn the pages of their booking calendars, it’s a sure sign that you should be, too! Why? We caught up with Cantin for the real reason why they don’t call it Christmas in July for nothing. No one really wants to think about the holidays right now, but I imagine Lessing’s swings into full gear right after Halloween, right? Now that’s a funny one — try the first week of September! Our clients begin booking their holiday events right after Labor Day. By the end of November, we’re already booked solid. Even our web pages are updated with holiday information in September.” What’s the first thing party planners should do when considering their holiday party? Set the date. The two weekends leading up to Christmas are obviously insane, so we always encourage people to consider dates earlier in December. People are full of holiday cheer from Thanksgiving on, so why not make an early impression? If you’re looking for the prime dates, though, you should book your catering and choose a venue now! Other than the date, what else should we get ahead of now? Guest count. It makes a huge difference when you are booking locations. The more precise you are now, the better you’ll be able to plan ahead and know what you’re getting into. What will be hot at parties this year? Signature cocktails will be at the top of the list. People want to put their twist and personality into their bar menu. It’s about the wow factor and leaving a lasting impression on all your guests. A new trend that’s emerging at all sorts of parties — corporate and

private — is the love of giving back. It’s becoming more common for hosts to request that guests bring a toy or gift that can be donated to those in need. It’s not just about the party anymore. What’s a subject that shouldn’t be overlooked? Well, budget for sure. You need to go in with a number and your eyes wide open, and then we can give you options based on that. It could mean the difference between a mediocre sit-down dinner and an unbelievable cocktail party. What do you love most about the holidays? I love a great party — and all the decorations! What drives you absolutely crazy? Shopping and the lines! People have little patience, and to me that’s not what the holidays are about. So, your word of wisdom is to keep your eye on the prize: a Lessing’s hosted party that’s been planned out well in advance. Yes! It’s the perfect way to make your holiday season complete! THE MOST RECOGNIZED ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE IN THE WORLD. LET’S TOAST! By Blaire Bass

E

legant and fruity, the Cuvée Rosé from Laurent-Perrier is the most recognized rosé Champagne in the world. It is also one of the few rosés made by the maceration method. Held in an elegant bottle inspired by those manufactured in the time of France’s King Henri IV, it has been widely acknowledged for its consistent high quality for more than 50 years, and it is the benchmark for rosé Champagne around the world. Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé is truly remarkable for its highly expressive bouquet, stemming from the careful preservation of fresh fruit aromas during the winemaking. Cuvée Rosé is made with 100 percent pinot noir from 10 different crus (or vineyards) from the north and south areas of the Montagne de Reims, including the famous Bouzy. Grapes from carefully selected plots are meticulously sorted and de-stemmed before going into vats, and the controlled maceration helps with the color extraction and the development of the full aromatic richness of the pinot noir. With intensely fruity flavors, clean and slightly sharp, the wine opens to the sensation of freshly picked strawberries, Morello cherries, black currants, and raspberries. The finish is supple and rounded. If you prefer your Champagne sans the pink, try Laurent-Perrier Brut La Cuvée Champagne. It’s a lighter house style. Subtle citrus, toast, and spice predominate in this perfectly balanced Champagne with a strong structure, giving the wine good food compatibility. As stated in the Wine Enthusiast: “Laurent-Perrier’s dry style is reflected in this crisp, elegant, and fine Champagne. The character is mineral, taut, with a great burst of citrus, and white fruit acidity. The ensemble creates a delicious foodfriendly wine.”

Laurent-Perrier, a major producer of Champagne, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Cuvée Rosé. This rosé has been our editor’s favorite sparkling summer libation pick. Cheers!

LAURENCE GREENBERG PUTTING THE FAULT BACK INTO NO-FAULT By Jacob Puck aurence Greenberg is not only one of the most prominent divorce lawyers in New York City, but he is also one of the most creative. His firm has made a name for itself by taking over cases where clients believe that a judge has taken a personal dislike to them. While few parties now seek a fault divorce for cruelty or adultery since New York enacted no-fault divorce in 2010, “the impact of fault in divorces is alive and well,” says Greenberg. The Greenberg firm understands that judges have unconscious biases like anyone, which is particularly relevant in high-conflict divorce actions, where many decisions are based upon a judge’s discretion. Greenberg and his associates prepare their clients to make the best possible impression on divorce court judges. When Greenberg needs to rehabilitate a client, he suggests things as simple as an apology to the court, changing the client’s courtroom demeanor, or following court orders when they were previously disobeyed. “While it may be true that cruelty and adultery typically no longer serve as grounds for divorce, these behaviors may be particularly relevant to the determination of custody and financial issues. For example, domestic violence has a huge impact in custody determinations and adultery often has ramifications on the financial side.” For example, it is well settled law in New York that spending large sums of money on a significant other constitutes marital waste, a factor that the court considers in the distribution of marital property. Greenberg is also adept at exploiting bad behavior to benefit his own client. For example, his firm unearthed evidence that a husband had spent significant amounts of money on escorts during his marriage, as well as his claiming he was on a charitable work trip when, in fact, he was in the Caribbean with his girlfriend, buying her baubles at Cartier and bags at Louis Vuitton. “As a direct result of proving this non-marital spending, we recouped hundreds of thousands of dollars for our client in addition to her entitlement from equitable distribution.” Greenberg also cautions that these sorts of bad behaviors have repercussions far beyond economics. Many determinations in a divorce case rest upon the credibility of a party. Quoting the Latin phrase falsis in uno, falsis in omnibus, Greenberg points out that if a client lies to the court about one thing, the court may believe the client lies about everything. Thus, falsehoods about adultery or questionable spending may impact a party’s overall credibility, which may be considered in all aspects of a divorce proceeding.

Greenberg ensures that his clients know that bad behavior runs the gamut from extreme behaviors like domestic violence and secreting assets to more commonplace acts like extravagant spending just before the divorce begins or bad-mouthing the other party. “While it may seem self-evident, a party should be on their best behavior during a divorce. I always take the time to explain the do’s and don’ts of divorce to my clients.” Conversely, Greenberg has a longstanding reputation of not being afraid to exploit the bad behavior of his opposition for the benefit of his client. Greenberg understands that while the specific grounds for divorce may no longer be particularly relevant, the divorce court is a court of equity and fairness. “If a judge takes a disliking to you based upon your behavior, what he or she perceives as fair may be impacted on a monumental scale,” says Greenberg. Now after a swim, a person’s hair dries to look exactly as it did before it got wet.” Kathleen and Kao agree that the greatest compliment they can receive is being recognized for their trademark styles. Kao recalled, “One time a client told me that she recognized my haircut on a woman, so she asked if I had cut her hair. And the woman told her that I had. That tells me that I’m not just doing work, I’m creating something that someone recognizes. It’s like a painting. Oh, that’s Picasso. The haircut is my signature.” Salon AKS salonaks.com 212.888.0707 Social Life

AN UNLIKELY LOVE STORY By Trace Adkins

“Our hearts and our brains are completely in synch, and this truly has been a perfect match on so many levels.”

M

adeline Harmon is the proprietress of what is likely the most iconic vintage clothing store in the country. At Chuck’s Vintage on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, Madeline has not only sold a $1 million pair of jeans (the most expensive ever), she has turned away the likes of Steve Jobs, and has catered to rock stars like Robert Plant. She also recently fell in love here. Vincent Cammarata is probably best known these days as the president of Green Stream Finance, an investment firm focused on developing a number of shared community solar projects, with an emphasis on the emerging cannabis industry and its evolution from electric to solar growing sources. Vinnie will tell you that his daily inspiration is a direct result of his collaboration, and the mutual love, that has developed between him and Madeline, all from a chance encounter a couple of years ago at Chuck’s. “Madeline is amazing at building brands, and I have been fortunate to bring my strong financial background to projects focused on renewable energy,” says Vinnie. “Our hearts and our brains are completely in synch, and this truly has been a perfect match on so many levels.” The perfect match, which culminated in marriage on July Fourth this year, grew out of an unlikely meeting. “The first time I met Vinnie wasn’t a great day for me. I really wasn’t in the mood for small talk,” says Madeline, explaining that a lot

of people come into the boutique just to poke around with no intention of buying anything. “So, I told him he could sit down if he wanted to have a real conversation, or else he could move on.” Vinnie stayed, and the pair went on to talk for nine hours. It was during that conversation, and subsequent others, that Vinnie and Madeline realized their mutual passion for life, respect for the things around them, the importance of adventure— even their shared Italian heritage. “It was amazing. We immediately became the best of friends. We stayed that way for six months,” says Madeline, who went on to joke: “I never thought I’d like this guy. But he has changed me in every way. From the moment he walked through the door, I found peace, someone who really listened. We connected on so many levels.” He also became the rock for their two children, Emma and William. Whether on long- or short-haul trips, the kids could count on Vinnie to create fun experiences, including surfing, a favorite pastime. “He’s been through thick and thin, and throughout it all he’s been a rock to this family, making sure everyone is taken care of,” says Madeline, who suffered a devastating injury just one month after the pair brought their bi-coastal romance to fruition when he moved from New York to the City of Angels. SocialLifeMagazine.com

“We had a beautiful month together; it was magical and quickly became more than either of us could ever have imagined,” says Vinnie. The pair has persevered, continuing to grow their businesses while focusing on improving Madeline’s health. “He has never left my side, not even as we travelled all across the country and been to every doctor,” says Madeline, who chokes up. “This man has loved me unconditionally.” “His life is all about being good and doing good,” she says. “This is a real love story, and I don’t think it’s something that other people have experienced the way I have. It’s been quite an incredible two-year ride with many peaks and valleys, but through it all neither of us has looked back. We truly look forward to a beautiful life ahead.”

TY HUNTER BEYONCÉ’S STYLIST ROCKS IT By Cecelia Boon

T

y Hunter is celebrated as one of the world’s most influential fashion experts and styling icons. He has styled or contributed to the cover of almost every major international magazine. He has also consulted for more than fifty national and international ad campaigns. In 2000, Ty Hunter was offered the opportunity to work with the up-and-coming Destiny’s Child, by their lead stylist, Tina Knowles. After working with the iconic Beyoncé, Ty has risen to the top of the fashion charts as a key talent in the field. Social Life sat down with Ty to learn more about his personal journey: You’ve been dubbed one of the world’s most influential fashion experts and styling icons. What does that mean to you? First of all, thank you for giving me that, I need to take you around with me, I love that. It means a lot you know. Fashion is something that I was born with. I’ve always helped family members and friends get dressed. I was the go-to person for the final look to say, ‘This is a go.’ So, I don’t look at fashion as a job. It’s really who I am. To get admired and honored, and to have someone like you give me this beautiful title is an honor. Thank you so much. When did you first know you had a special flair for fashion? I would have to say it started with my very first concert. When I was about twelve, I think, or thirteen, my dad took me to see Diana Ross, and I believe that’s when everything happened for me. I fell in love with all the costumes—from the hair to the rhinestones, the sequins, the glitter, all the fashion and the fact that this woman had this charisma. You know she has just about everything, and I’m just obsessed with her. I love her so much. Diana Ross is my idol. You’ve worked with some of the biggest names in music. What was it like working with Beyoncé? She was like family. Like I said, we grew up together. It was like playing dress-up with your sisters. Each of the Destiny’s Child girls I consider family. This place where we all are now gives me such a wonderful feeling. The journey to get here had a lot of hills to climb and mountains to cross, but we made it. We hear you’re also admired for your motivational speaking. Can you tell us about this pursuit of yours? It started during a transition period three years ago when I was stepping away from styling. I started out posting things on social media, and as I traveled the world, people were coming up to me to say things like ‘You helped me through this suicide . . . You helped me

through a divorce . . . You helped me through my kids selling drugs.’ I realized it was bigger than me, my platform, so it just feels good. How would someone who knows you well describe you in three words? I would say: humble, kind, light. What was it like to host a screening for Warner Brothers? So exciting. I love Warner Brothers movies, so for them to call us to do the screening for Oceans 8 was great. A lot more people RSVP’d than we thought. It was limited seating, but we made it work and, it was a fun, fun, fun event and hopefully we will do a lot more. Rihanna did her thing. All the girls did such a great job. And it was great to see that little twist at the Met Gala, an event that I’m actually a part of most of the time. It was such a great movie. Ty Hunter tytryone.com Social Life

PINNACLE OF PARTY PLANNING

BEVERLY HILLS CONCIERGE DOCTOR

By Bennett Marcus

By Bennett Marcus

Harriette Rose Katz, dubbed by the Wall Street Journal “the queen of topof-the-line social parties,” has been at the pinnacle of the party-planning industry for 40 years.

GOURMET ADVISORY SERVICES Katz’s orginal aha moment came when a colleague called her “ foolish ” for organizing free parties for friends when she could have been making money at it. She immediately registered the name Gourmet Advisory Services, and by that evening she had booked her first job.

FAMILY BUSINESS Now, her nieces Claudia Warner and Trisha Stern as well as her daughter, Melissa Rosenbloom, help run her busy firm, which organizes every single detail for over one hundred events each year, including weddings, bar mitzvahs, and corporate affairs.

THE CHOSEN FEW Just over four years ago, Katz again broke new ground in her field when she formed The Chosen Few, an elite collective of event professionals that includes More Than Music, Creative Games, Cupa Cabana, and Frank Alexander. “There are no regulatory practices in place in our industry,” Katz says. “We’re party planners. That’s all we do. We’re not the bartenders. We’re not the musicians or the caterers. We don’t do the invitations. We’re the people that make it all happen.” Clients often ask for referrals for various services, so Katz realized that establishing some criteria would be helpful. The Chosen Few meet, hold events, and share ideas. “They feed off one another. They say things that they haven’t been able to say to other people because they’re safe. You’re only as good as your last party,” says Katz. gourmetadvisory.com 212.535.0005 SocialLifeMagazine.com

Dr. Ehsan Ali is known in elite circles as the Beverly Hills concierge doctor, because he provides round-the-clock house and hotel calls for both local residents and visiting VIPS from NYC and the Hamptons. The noted internist and general practitioner counts Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Liam Hemsworth as clients. “I’m available 24 hours a day, seven days a week because of the entertainment industry and the high-profile people who visit from the East Coast,” Dr. Ali says.

CELEBRITY PATIENTS Other celebrity patients include Lana Del Rey, Rita Orca, Mel Gibson, and athletes like Yaisel Puig and Chandler Parsons. “There are very few doctors who are available after hours, and these VIPs don’t want to go to the emergency room, don’t want to be seen, don’t want pictures taken by the paparazzi. So they like me to come to them, and I’m happy to provide that service,” he says. Dr. Ali was on a recent episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, when Lisa Rinna summoned him to administer his signature IV vitamin drip, which is very popular among the Hollywood crowd.

PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN A larger part of Dr. Ali’s practice is as a family doctor for people from all walks of life. “I don’t want anybody to feel like they have to be rich and famous to be able to come into the office. I take insurance; I have office hours; I see people of all backgrounds,” he says.

ALTERNATIVE COSMETIC TREATMENTS Dr. Ali also provides some alternative treatments, including some non-surgical cosmetic procedures, including Botox, fillers, CoolSculpting, medical weight loss, and some hormone replacement therapy.

VOLUNTEER WORK, UCLA Dr. Ali volunteers regularly at L.A.-area health clinics, serving the homeless and uninsured. One, the Venice Family Clinic, is affiliated with the UCLA School of Medicine, and Dr. Ali instructs the medical students while treating patients there.
