PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Hamptons summers always go by so fast! We are in mid-July and it seems like time is flying by. How can we slow it down? The simple answer is to completely disconnect: turn off your cell phone and computer. If that is impossible, try and limit your activities over the weekend, and just focus on a select few. Remember, it’s quality, not quantity. Simple, not complex. There are many ways to spend your time in the Hamptons. One of my favorites is to explore. It’s always fun to be a little adventurous and try new things, or discover new places. There are many hidden gems and secret treasures waiting for you. The summer is also the peak season for charity events. Every weekend there is a wide array of functions in the Hamptons for you to choose from. Make sure you choose well. Anyone can attend a charity event, but it takes someone who is committed and passionate about the given cause to really make a difference. It's an epic summer! Time to put on the brakes and slow it down. Have a great July! Justin Mitchell

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

This month’s cover shoot was a thrilling experience. The energy on set was utterly electric — from the photographer to every stylist and assistant, all team members were excited to be there, creating these radiant images. It is always fantastic to be on set with Christie. I remember four years ago, the first time we worked together . . . I spearheaded the team that placed this incredible beauty back in a swimsuit for the first time in 30 years for any magazine. Since then, nobody has been able to get enough of her — and I know we certainly can’t. In this month’s pages, Christie Brinkley is back in a swimsuit, and I’m very proud of what that means for the body-positive movement. I hope seeing a beautiful woman embracing her body at 63 shifts the narrative we as women tell ourselves. Specifically, I hope that mothers, sisters, and aunts tell the younger generation of women how much better they felt about their bodies once they started focusing on being healthy, exercising, and self-accepting instead of trying to live up to the too-skinny, teenage images with which we are still bombarded on a daily basis. Personally, I hope women start to spend less time criticizing themselves and each other and more time accepting themselves and focusing on how to improve their energy through healthy habits.

Christie Brinkley, Devorah Rose

I don’t think there are many places better than the East End to nurture healthy living behavior. From cooking with products gathered at local farm stands to communing with nature during a sunset stroll, there are so many incredible activities to enjoy! I hope everyone takes the time to curl up at the beach with this issue and peruse our pages. Enjoy the weekend!

FEEL FABULOUS IN KIMIMI SWIMWEAR By Blaire Bass

K

nown for her top-of-the-line Kimimi Swimwear designs, the entrepreneur and fashion designer Elizabeth Arthur is a passionate advocate of individuality and women’s empowerment. Arthur’s passion is to express — through her designs — a woman’s beauty and to acknowledge that we are all different and beautiful in our own way. From petite to plus sizes, the unique line of swimwear comes in a wide variety of styles and patterns, all inspired by the natural beauty of the butterfly. Her innovative designs were showcased at L.A. Fashion Week last fall, and the buzz about her talent has grown exponentially since then. Social Life browsed through her designs and fell head over heels for Luna, a white halter suit, cut low in the back. It’s made with imported Italian fabric and stamped with Kimimi’s signature butterfly. It’s smoking hot, yet chic and humble. It’s the perfect Hamptons beach couture. Get it! Kimimi’s mission is to transform each individual who wears her pieces from ordinary to extraordinary, through a passion for the most exquisite materials and attention to every detail. A New York-area entrepreneur, Arthur has always been inspired by butterflies. As a child playing on the beaches of Trinidad and Tobago, she admired the wonder of the patterns on their wings when they’d flutter by. As an adult, she identifies with and is inspired by their process of metamorphosis. Recently, she even embarked on a journey to observe all types of women on Caribbean beaches to figure out how she can improve her designs and maximize confidence. “I want women to feel gorgeous, elegant, and confident on the beach. If my designs can help boost confidence in women, even a little, then I feel like I’ve accomplished my goal,” she says. A true champion of the female mystique, Arthur says that she is never trying to achieve the idealized image that appears on the front page of a magazine or in the ads for cosmetic surgeons. “No matter what size you are, you should feel sexy and confident when you go to the beach. You should feel sexy and happy,” she says. “One butterfly is never the same as another, but they are all beautiful. No two women are exactly alike, but we are all beautiful in so many ways.” Stay tuned for her new summer 2018 collection to launch soon. kimimillc.com SocialLifeMagazine.com

THE FASHIONABLE DOG By Lizabeth Zindel

CANINE STYLES POP-UP AT ELIE TAHARI This summer, fashionable dogs of the East End will find a special treat when they step inside Elie Tahari’s store in East Hampton: clothing and accessories designed just for them. To our delight, Canine Styles, the world’s only dog lifestyle brand, in collaboration with Elie Tahari Ltd., has launched a pop-up shop in Tahari’s Main Street location. To celebrate the partnership, Canine Styles has introduced limited East Hampton products. We absolutely love the personalized East Hampton dog bowls. Also available for purchase are Canine Styles’ popular staples, including cashmere sweaters, rain slickers, collars, leashes, and harnesses. “We have always welcomed dogs into our East Hampton store, but lately I have become a big dog person.” says Elie Tahari. “This year, after I adopted a Pomeranian and a shih tzu, I discovered Canine Styles and thought the brand was so unique and fresh that it would be fun to create a pop-up inside our East Hampton store. Now we can really dress the entire family.” The two brands are a perfect match, sharing a vision that is classic and fresh. Canine Styles’ Mark Drendel says, “So many of our longtime clients are out East during the summer and opening a pop-up store inside the most beautiful store in East Hampton seemed like a natural.” Our four-legged friends seem to agree!

INSIDE LISA PLINER’S CHARMING NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK The shoe designer Lisa Pliner gave her adorable Maltese named BabyDoll a life most humans could only dream of. Pliner and her treasured pooch traveled the world first class. BabyDoll learned to swim in Saint-Tropez, had her paws measured for one-of-a-kind booties in Milan, and drank strictly bottled water. The human and canine best friends even designed a clothing collection together that featured matching outfits for dogs and their owners. Though BabyDoll went to doggie heaven in 2014, Pliner celebrates her everlasting love for fashion’s ‘first dog’ in her entertaining new book, A Puppy’s Dream Comes True. Told through the eyes of a Maltese puppy, the charming tale will make children and parents smile as BabyDoll explores her new surroundings, jet sets around the world, and has her tail highlighted pink. This introductory book is the first in the BabyDoll’s Adventures series. We look forward to following the delightful Maltese’s escapades. SocialLifeMagazine.com

JETSETTER ST YLE A POSH STAY IN LONDON By Gregory DelliCarpini Jr.

L

ocated on Great Cumberland Place, near the Marble Arch and Hyde Park, sits the very cool The Arch London. This is the kind of hotel you will want to stay for a long while, so book accordingly. The property is as elegant as it is cool — the hotel is directly opposite Madonna’s dazzling London home. Does it get any cooler than that? The area is also rich with hip boutique shops and trendy restaurants. The hotel, like the city of London, is a brilliant mix of old and new. It retains many of the original features of the townhouses and mews houses that were incorporated into

this hotel. Grand staircases and bold architectural flourishes are throughout. The property’s décor has contemporary flair. Stunning art by British artists include Alphatecture, a series of photographs by Peter Defty. Modern moments can also be seen in hip gadgets like the digital maid service and digital “Do Not Disturb” signs outside each room. The 2017 Travelers’ Choice Awards named The Arch London a top 20 luxury hotel in the UK. The Arch London thearchlondon.com Social Life

THE MALE BAG

HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL? By Anthony Michael

This is it — the halfway mark. And, while it’s ever so tempting to get a smidge sad about the days getting shorter, buck up, cowboy! There’s still plenty of time to look good, feel great, and indulge in things that advance the way life should be.

Way of Will wayofwill.com

Peter Manning for Men petermanningnyc.com

It’s that time of the year to start taking your skin seriously. Yes, you did get too much sun last weekend, so nourish. Way of Will face oils ($25), built exclusively for those with active lifestyles, bring vitality to your dry, oily, or sensitive skin with a perfect blend of stripped down vitamins, seed oils, and other exotic ingredients. Will enhances your training ritual by blending essential oils that protect, energize, refresh, relax, moisturize, and groom the body and mind.

Vertically challenged? While nearly every cosmetic surgeon touts the benefits of guys snipping their eyelids, tucking their tummies, and adding a boost to their butt, we have yet to find one who can add an extra four inches or more to those of us hovering at 5’ 8” or less. Meanwhile, we don’t all have time for bespoke tailors. The answer? Peter Manning for Men. From shirts to jackets to sweaters to suits, these togs for the “not-so-tall” guy fit like a glove. For a trial run, start off with some classic fit chinos ($89). You’ll be hooked.

skull & bones skullandbonesny.com While Manning may have you covered on the outside, skull & bones — local boys making good — will keep you (barely) covered on the inside. Inspired by the vibrancy of New York City, skull & bones is all about attitude, style, and comfort. Start with the Graffitti brief ($26). Premium fabric is cut and stitched to keep the boys happy and a no-roll waistband keeps the bulging where it should be.

DR . NICHOLAS PERRICONE ANTI-AGING FOR BEAUTY AND HEALTH A MAN OF PEACE & VISION By Robyn Freedman This is the second half of a two-part interview with Dr. Nicholas Perricone. The first half appeared in our July 4 issue, and the entire interview will soon appear online, both as part of our online version of Social Life’s issues, and in its entirety as a searchable PDF.

D

r. Nicholas Perricone is more than a scientist, inventor, physician, nutritionist, best-selling author, and the creator of some of the world’s finest beauty products. He is a man on a mission, whose passion for science began at an early age, when he decided to help people look and feel better. After 30 years as a scientist, creating some of the world’s best beauty and antiaging products, Nicholas Perricone, MD, has added to his repertoire of ways people can improve their health. Dr. Perricone’s latest passion is introducing Dr. Perricone Hydrogen Water to the public. perriconehydrogenwater.com. The benefits of drinking Dr. Perricone Hydrogen Water are an increase in energy and vitality. It improves athletic performance, enhances brain power, overcomes jet lag, and alleviates hangovers. Most important, preliminary research shows it may even slow down the aging process and prevent or reverse many common illnesses. More research is needed to confirm these early findings, but it is encouraging and exciting at this point. You take a holistic approach to beauty — beauty comes from the inside out. What are your biggest tips, apart from skincare, for people to get beautiful healthy skin? The Perricone program is a lifestyle of health, beauty, and vitality based on years of scientific research. Enjoy protein, healthy fats, fresh fruits and vegetables, while avoiding sugary, starchy, and processed foods. Stay well hydrated with pure spring water and enjoy three 8-ounce cans of Dr. Perricone Hydrogen Water daily. I have been drinking your hydrogen water since May 27th, with incredible results from day one, and now I almost forget

I had certain ailments. I have also been giving my 16-year-old son one can a day. He has commented several times afterward, “I feel so good!” I think that your experience is real because the science behind hydrogen water indicates it can be helpful for many, many health problems, and it benefits healthy people with no apparent problems. Do you recommend your water for children? If so, what ages? Yes, five years and above. It gives students clarity of thought and heightened problem-solving abilities. As one ages, gratitude and simplicity come more easily. What are you grateful for today? I begin every morning with meditation. Drinking hydrogen water before my meditation session enhances the meditative state, as I feel more focused and grounded. I am grateful for the chance to continue my mission. Without pinpointing specific diseases, how does lack of water relate to disease, lack of vitality, and aging. Water has always been a key life force. All living organisms prefer it and respond to enhancements in growth, metabolic efficiency, and enzyme activation. We need adequate water intake because all biochemical reactions take place in the presence of water. For optimal health, drink eight 8-ounce glasses of pure spring water daily. Choose only quality water. Only the purest water is used in Dr. Perricone Hydrogen Water. How do you see Dr. Perricone Hydrogen Water changing people’s lives? The powerful anti-inflammatory activity of hydrogen water gives immediate and long-term results. Regular use will maintain the quality of our lives and extend our health for many years. Your hydrogen water is now available only online. When do you expect it to be in stores nationwide? We should be in stores nationwide in the fall. We also ship directly from perriconehydrogenwater.com Do you think that using hydrogen in treatment of dementia, cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and other horrific diseases may be the future and will be recognized as a treatment covered by insurance companies? Much research remains to be done, but I am optimistic that the research will be positive and we will see benefits in all of these areas. Social Life

Lyme disease is an epidemic that is growing yearly in the United States. In its latest map, in 2015, the CDC reported 14 states that are responsible for 95% of Lyme cases. The Hamptons as part of the highly infested Northeast region has the requisite wooded areas and a large deer population to harbor ticks. Treatments for Lyme disease are trial and error as there is no single protocol for every person. We do know the immune system as well as the central nervous system are affected by this infection due to an ongoing inflammatory cascade. An anti-inflammatory diet, moderate exercise, a healthy lifestyle, and hydrogen water will help maintain a competent immune system.

age-accelerators. My skin care products are an alternative to Botox, especially my Neuropeptide Facial Conformer.

Please talk about the science behind the benefits of drinking hydrogen-infused water. Scientists discovered that when hydrogen was administered to living cells in vitro, it had powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, resulting in the neutralizing of the toxic free-radicals before they can damage the cells. This powerful protection will help prevent the diseases of aging by staving off inflammation caused by free radicals.

It is a natural energy drink, enhancing mood and alertness without being over-stimulating. It increases cellular energy in a different way because it is not energy from protein, carbohydrates, fats, or stimulants such as caffeine. Its effects are subtle yet profound.

You have been writing about inflammation and anti-inflammatory food for decades. Yes, and some favorites are wild salmon; cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, watercress), berries; dark chocolate (70% to 85% cocoa), healthy fats from cold water fish, avocados, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, and coconut oil. Plus, eight 8-ounce glasses of spring water, three of which should be hydrogen-infused water. What is an indulgence you enjoy? Raw dark chocolate. Dr. Perricone Hydrogen Water has been known to help suppress inflammation, increase mental clarity, alleviate jet lag, and help reduce muscle pain. It has also been described as a great rescue drink after a night of consuming alcohol. What other noticeable changes have you seen? Mental clarity, increased physical stamina, and a heightened sense of well-being. Your life’s work deserves a documentary film. Have you ever thought of producing one? The highly regarded producer Jerry Weintraub, a good friend, was planning on doing just that. Tragically he passed away unexpectedly. You have taken an anti-Botox stance since the early 1990s. Do you still feel this way? Yes, I don’t believe that paralyzing muscles in the face is a good strategy for long-term youthfulness. I am committed to researching safe, non-invasive technologies that keep skin supple and youthfully radiant, and slow the effects of sun damage, poor diet, stress, and other SocialLifeMagazine.com

What other benefits can we see from Dr. Perricone Hydrogen Water? There have been over 600 peer-reviewed scientific publications on the benefits of hydrogen-infused water. Hydrogen acts by triggering the cells’ own antioxidant protection through gene expression, reducing inflammation in the brain. This improves cognitive function, allowing for greater focus and a feeling of well-being. It eliminates jet lag and the effects of sleep deprivation in 30 minutes to one hour.

If you could share a cup of tea with anyone today, who would it be — living or diseased? Nikola Tesla. He was a genius scientist, inventor, and philanthropist. Tell me something about yourself that hasn’t been known to the public before. I believe in the power of prayer. Not just in my life, but for many lives prayer can truly change things for the better. There is a unique way to drink your water. Explain the logic behind it. Drink directly from the can and consume the entire amount within 15 minutes, because hydrogen gas can rapidly leave the water once the container is opened. What is your favorite time of day? The morning hours, as my energy and creativity are at their highest. Also the time just after sunset because of its peace and tranquility. Ending this interview reminded me of a saying by the poet Diane Ackerman. “When I get to the end of my life, I want to not only live the length but the width of it.” Do you have a saying you live by? Extract the best out of every day and always give thanks. perriconehydrogenwater.com perriconemd.com

SculpSure BY DR.AVALIANI THE FUTURE IN CONTOURING IS NOW By Frances Gormley

A

nna Avaliani, MD, is one of the best physician artists on Park Avenue, specializing in non-invasive cosmetic procedures. Celebrities from the worlds of fashion, sports, entertainment, and finance come to Dr. Avaliani for her exceptional experience, artistry, and attention to detail. These attributes combined with her warm and caring personality have brought many referrals to her growing practice. Her state-of-the-art laser center was awarded the prestigious Cynosure Center of Excellence Award. She was also named a RealSelf Top Doctor, an award given for her contribution to medicine and patient education. Dr. Avaliani offers the latest bespoke beauty protocols for each body type. One of her most favorite treatments is SculpSure, the latest FDA-approved body-contouring device that can remove fat in as little as 25 minutes, with no downtime. What makes you a top SculpSure provider in NYC? To date, I have performed more than 1,000 treatments, and a patient’s results always depend on the experience of the provider. I’m a boardcertified cosmetic and laser surgeon, highly qualified to perform a proper physical exam, and my aesthetic eye and vision for a patient’s body are key to a treatment design. This includes my experienced judgment about the applicators I use, the correct settings, and the number of recommended treatments. My patients for SculpSure are increasingly referrals from other satisfied patients. You could offer any procedure to eliminate stubborn fat. Why SculpSure? SculpSure technology is simply the future. It does much more than destroy fat cells. It can tighten the skin and improve cellulite. No other non-invasive technology can match this benefit. Who is an ideal candidate for SculpSure? This is not a weight-loss treatment. It is simply the best device to help regain a former body after pregnancy or improve a current shape for more definition and better contour. It is designed to target areas of stubborn fat that remain even after diet and exercise. It is important to have realistic expectations. How many treatments are needed? Consultation is always required because it can be one treatment, or it can be three. On average, patients are advised to have two treatments four weeks apart. Which areas does SculpSure treat? Many! It’s FDA-cleared for the abdomen, love handles, inner and outer SocialLifeMagazine.com

thighs, and the back of thighs. I can also treat bra rolls, banana/underbutt rolls, above-knee fat pads, and many more. SculpSure can accommodate any body type and shape. Why choose SculpSure over CoolSculpting? SculpSure differs from CoolSculpting in several ways. SculpSure is a newer and safer technology. There is absolutely no bruising because there’s no suction. Patients do not have to take nerve pain medication (as many do with CoolSculpting), and there’s no necessary massage, which is often painful. I can treat larger areas with SculpSure, and I never have uneven results. In fact, SculpSure can tighten skin and improve cellulite. CoolSculpting just freezes fat, and can have more side effects without working as well as SculpSure. SculpSure accommodates different body types because it has various applicators as opposed to CoolSculpting’s single applicator. How long does a treatment take? I have four applicators that I can use all at once for 25 minutes. The average abdomen requires four applicators, and many patients like to treat their love handles, too. In 50 minutes I can treat both problem areas. It would take four hours for CoolSculpting to approach what I can do in less than an hour. What does a SculpSure treatment feel like? It is comfortable and tolerable. It may feel like a warming sensation for some or cramping sensation for others. It varies from one person to another, and also from one treatment area to another. What’s the downtime? No downtime. No bruising. No one will ever know you did it except you. When will I see results? It takes an average of 6 to 12 weeks to see results. Some patients see results at 6 weeks, with optimal results at 12. dravaliani.com 30 East 60th Street, Suite 1100 212.673.8888

MAKEOVERS FOR MEN COSMETIC PROCEDURES THAT BOOST GUYS’ CONFIDENCE By Jacob Puck

P

eople say men get more attractive as they get older. However, when a distinguished gray turns to thinning hair, some guys are pretty sure that the compliments are hollow. Good news. Hair replacement has been revolutionized by a procedure called NeoGraft, and Dr. Stephen Greenberg of Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery is among the leading providers. NeoGraft is a new, minimally invasive hair-restoration option that transplants your own hair from thicker areas of your scalp to thinner, balding areas. The NeoGraft method is different from traditional methods because it swiftly and painlessly harvests hair follicles by using the follicular-unit extraction (FUE) technique; it’s the first and only FDA-approved FUE implantation system and features the only “no touch” technology on the market. “NeoGraft is becoming more and more popular because it is so easy. There’s no scarring, practically no discomfort, and people can get back to their normal activities within a day or two,” says Dr. Greenberg. “The procedure has completely revolutionized hair replacement for men!” And, says Dr. Greenberg, many women are catching on as well. What else is trending for guys at Dr. Greenberg’s offices? More and more guys are going in for surgery to remove fat and get fit. “The number of men having a cosmetic surgery procedure has gone up astronomically over the past several years. About 20 to 25 percent of my patients now are men,” says Dr. Greenberg, adding that the most common procedures include liposuction of the abdomen and love handles. “Some patients struggle to eliminate fat in those areas, despite eating right and exercising regularly. Also, male chest reduction, called gynecomastia, is very common among male patients of all ages,” reports Dr. Greenberg. Another procedure that men are often interested in is rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, and Dr. Greenberg knows about men’s noses. “It’s very key for guys that you don’t feminize the nose, and to make sure sure it looks absolutely natural without overdoing it,” he says. “Like all of my procedures, I strive for a natural, yet effective result.” Finally, a procedure such as an eyelid lift can refresh a patient’s overall aesthetic. Getting rid of the bags under the eyes and making the eyes look more open reduces years from a patient’s look. “Men want a quick recovery after a procedure, and to feel confident, knowing they will look their best,” says Dr. Greenberg. “They’re back to work, and they’re feeling good in just a matter of days.”

ABOUT DR. STEPHEN T. GREENBERG Stephen T. Greenberg, MD, FACS, is a nationally recognized cosmetic plastic surgeon based in New York. Dr. Greenberg is well known for his expertise, and is frequently interviewed on the latest cosmetic surgery techniques. He is often a featured speaker, and he regularly appears on many local and national television and radio shows. Dr. Greenberg is the author of A Little Nip, A Little Tuck, and is the creator of the Saige anti-aging skin care line. In addition, Dr. Greenberg hosts his own weekly radio talk-show, the only regularly scheduled cosmetic surgery show in the country, on a number of New York-area stations. greenbergcosmeticsurgery.com

DR . KENNETH MARK SKIN CANCER AND COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY EXPERT By Rodney Sparrow

D

r. Kenneth Mark completed his residency at the world-renowned NYU Department of Dermatology. Dr. Mark then performed a two-year fellowship with a cosmetic dermatology surgeon and a plastic surgeon, in order to sub-specialize in cosmetic procedures, plastic reconstruction, and Mohs’ micrographic skin cancer surgery. “These are my real areas of expertise,” he says. “If I can perform surgery on eyelids, ears, noses, and lips, I have gifted eye-hand coordination and attention to detail,” he says. “This precision, knowledge of anatomy, and experience translates to being a better injector of Botox and fillers.”

COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY Specifically, Dr. Mark’s expertise is in cosmetic dermatology: Injectables, including Botox and fillers; lasers; peels; Ultherapy; Kybella; CoolSculpting; skin cancer detection and cure (Mohs’ surgery); acne; and rosacea. While he is sought after by the “who’s who” of the Hamptons and Aspen, Dr. Kenneth Mark also enjoys taking care of local fishermen, gardeners, chefs, and skiers. One of the most-requested treatments is Ultherapy, the only FDA-cleared non-surgical procedure that actually lifts the skin. It lifts the jawline, jowls, neck, and eyelids without surgery. Ultherapy requires only one treatment, and there is virtually no downtime. “You can go to the beach the next day; you can go to a cocktail party that night,” says Dr. Mark. In 2012, he was one of the first doctors in the U.S. to adopt this technology, and its manufacturer hired him to lecture other doctors.

COOLSCULPTING Another patient favorite is CoolSculpting, a non-invasive way to improve your beach body by freezing fat. Unlike liposuction, it avoids the risks of anesthesia or denting from removing too much fat. There is no downtime with this procedure.

FILLERS & LASERS Dr. Mark offers the most up-to-date and best-in-class non-invasive cosmetic treatments, including MixTo fractional CO2 laser resurfacing, Botox, Juvéderm, and Voluma, which he says is the greatest filler ever invented, because it is extremely safe, adding volume with the most natural results. Voluma allows me to think like an artist and lift and sculpt the face in three dimensions, instead of just filling lines and wrinkles.” Vollure is a brand-new product, the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler, FDA-approved to last up to 18 months in the nasolabial folds, while Volbella is another new hyaluronic acid filler ideal for fine lines around the lips and even the lips themselves.

DR. KENNETH MARK SKINCARE PRODUCTS Dr. Mark created the most technologically advanced, cutting edge, clinically active anti-aging skincare line. These synergistic products, free of parabens, mineral oils, and animal testing, are manufactured exclusively for Dr. Mark. The line contains Dr. Mark’s proprietary ingredient, Asta-Zome, which is thousands of times stronger than vitamin C, a precious mineral extract which stimulates more collagen than retinol, peptides, hyaluronic acid boosters, stem cells, and other plant based extracts. Academically, his title is Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology, as he teaches and supervises the NYU dermatology residents in the dermatology surgery clinic. Dr. Mark maintains private practices in Manhattan (Soho), Southampton, East Hampton, and Aspen. The skincare line was designed to counteract the damages incurred from active lifestyles at the beach, the mountains, or the city. Dr. Kenneth Mark was twice named “Best Doctors,” representing the top 5% of physicians in the United States as selected by other doctors. This is arguably the most prestigious honor a doctor can receive. kennethmarkmd.com Social Life

DESIGNING YOUR NEW SMILE AT S MILES NY By Jacob Puck

W

hether you have a recurring issue with a single tooth or have secretly wanted to upgrade your smile for years, you’ve likely put off the procedure because you can’t bear the thought of sitting in a dentist’s office for hours with extreme discomfort. Fortunately, there have been numerous technological advances in the field of dentistry. SmilesNY, a leading cosmetic dentistry practice in Manhattan, is at the forefront of the latest technology and offers its patients superb traditional dentistry care along with the benefits of the state-of-the-art equipment to help craft a beautiful and healthy smile. One of SmilesNY’s co-founders, Steven E. Roth, DMD, a leading authority on restorative and implant dentistry, who has been practicing cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry in New York City for over 25 years, says the days of such dreaded discomfort are long gone. We caught up with Dr. Roth to discuss how digital impressions technology has not only revolutionized the practice, but also the experience of designing a new smile. How does digital scanning technology improve cosmetic dentistry over conventional impressions? Research shows that accuracy and fit are greater with digital impressions, and when you don’t have a tray filled with goo in your mouth, you don’t have an uncomfortable reaction. Overall, your experience is much better with the updated technology, and the visit is typically shortened by an average of 30 minutes. Additionally, because it takes less time to take impressions, it increases the speed of the entire procedure because the images are available immediately. SocialLifeMagazine.com

There must be enormous value in having access to digital scanning and electronic records such as this, beyond just your time in the chair. It is more efficient from a number of standpoints. For example, let’s say a patient comes in and wants to straighten their teeth or get a night guard. Once we scan their teeth electronically, we essentially have a permanent record, so if that person switches dentists or loses their Invisalign aligners, they don’t have to come into the office. Even if they are traveling and are on the other side of the country, a call is all it takes! That all sounds too easy. What are the risks? There aren’t any known risks. All we’re doing is using a video camera, in the form of a wand, to take a video image of the teeth we’re working on. With impressions, you’ve got a bunch of stuff in your mouth that can make you choke or gag. A visit to the dentist used to be very uncomfortable, to say the very least. In your practice, what are the top three procedures that have been streamlined and improved by this technology? Porcelain veneers for cosmetics, which is what every movie star, model, and social-media star has in their mouth. Dental implants for those who have missing teeth. And Invisalign, which we use to straighten the teeth. We never take a physical impression anymore, and it’s been that way for about three years. What does this generally mean for the patient experience? Digital technology, in general, enables us to diagnose dental conditions earlier and with increased accuracy. People are in and out very quickly, and it’s definitely not anything like what your childhood experience may have been. For me, it’s like night and day from when I first began practicing. This is really just one example of a way that technology makes coming to work much more fun! SmilesNY smilesny.com 220 East 63rd Street 212.752.6537

CoolSculpt your silhouette By Ellen Dane

at loss, weight loss, extra fat, and exercise. Do these terms sound familiar? How much time do you spend working out, eating right? Do you even have a personal trainer and yet the extra fat around your belly, flanks, and outer thighs fails to diminish? Dr. Jacquie (Dr. Jacqueline Fulop-Goodling), the owner and founder of Just Melt Medical Spa in New York City, has the answer for you.

COOLSCULPTING! CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that requires no anesthesia. There’s no downtime and no recovery time. The CoolSculpting system uses a disposable gel pad that is placed over the treatment area, protecting the outer layer of the skin for the duration of the treatment. CoolSculpting is permanent fat reduction. The fat dies and does not return to the treated area.

COOLSCULPTING VS LIPOSUCTION CoolSculpting is a gentler solution. Non-invasive technology Gives you excellent body contouring Fewer risks No downtime No anesthesia or scarring No cannula marks or uneven results Lower in cost Liposuction is the more aggressive treatment of the two. Requires anesthesia Patient must stay home to recover Tubes are inserted into the area for drainage Bumpy, uneven results and surface irregularities can occur Weeks of bruising Medication is needed Higher in cost “There are some important facts to remember when considering CoolSculpting,” says Elizabeth Manessis, a senior medical aesthetician and consultant at Just Melt. “This procedure is not a substitute for weight loss, and may not affect your results on the scale. It does not protect you from weight gain. If you do gain weight, your remaining fat cells may expand or appear in another area. At Just Melt, we offer our clients a complete plan through diet, exercise, and maintenance, with many of our other technologies, for long-lasting results. This protocol sets us apart from other medical spas in New York City.” Just Melt Medical Spa justmelt.com 30 East 40th Street Social Life

DR . SIVAN FINKEL, DMD SMILE BY DESIGN By Christine Montanti

T

here are countless dentists in New York City who specialize in cosmetic dentistry, but there is only one who is an actual artist and an expert in aesthetics. This one of a kind cosmetic dentist is Dr. Sivan Finkel whose practice is at the Dental Parlour located in Manhattan’s chic Upper East Side. Dr. Sivan Finkel is one of the first dentists in America to use a Brazilian system known as Digital Smile Design which provides a more efficient and precise artistic method to enhance a patient’s smile. Among Dr. Sivan’s many accomplishments are co-authoring the textbook, Essentials of Esthetic Dentistry; Smile Design Integrating Esthetics and Function, co-directing NYU’s College of Dentistry Advanced Aesthetics Program, and being frequently featured as a dental expert on many national TV shows such as, Good Day New York, Fox News, and the Today Show. Dr. Sivan Finkel is a graduate of Tulane University where he majored in art. Throughout his entire life, he was always artistically inclined and actively involved in drawing and painting. “I always knew I had to do something artistic that was hands on, but I also wanted a career that was very stable and substantial,” he explains. As a student, Dr. Finkel tried to figure out how he could tie his artistic sensibilities into medicine. He spent many years working in hospitals interning with plastic surgeons until it finally became clear to him that plastic surgery was not his destined career path. Dr. Finkel realized that partnering with his father, Dr. Myron Finkel, a general dentist for over four decades, made the most sense. This partnership would enable Dr. Sivan Finkel to utilize his artistic talent by specializing in the field of cosmetic dentistry while working in the significant practice that his father had developed for over 40 years. Once the decision was made to partner with his father, Dr. Sivan Finkel attended Rutgers School of Medicine where he earned his DMD Degree. He completed his residency at Columbian-Presbyterian and had two years of aesthetics training at New York University College of Dentistry. While obtaining the required dental credentials, Dr. Finkel continued to study art because he knew that developing his artistic aptitude would enable him to perfect his cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Finkel explains that his artistic designs help his patients achieve the best results which make his work incredibly rewarding. “My job is to look at each patient’s face and then based on their individual face; I decide where the teeth and gums need to go. It’s like a blueprint. Recreating someone’s smile is so fulfilling. I don’t even draw or paint anymore. Seeing the results and SocialLifeMagazine.com

how happy people are with them is so unbelievably satisfying.” As a result of his work, Dr. Finkel has found that his patients are able to obtain new jobs or get involved in new relationships. “It changes my patient’s entire face and it is life changing. People cry in my office all the time. The work I do enhances the face and makes people much more attractive. The first thing a person does when they look at someone is they look at their teeth. What your smile looks like is more important than what you actually say with words. Nonverbal is 90 percent of communication.” thedentalparlournyc.com Instagram: @drsivanfinkel

BEAUTY PERFECTION IS ONLY A FREEZE AWAY By Julia Gundlach

n May, we reported on the hottest new treatment to descend on the Hamptons: cryotherapy. The location of choice is Cool Zone Cryo, located at 760 Montauk Highway in Water Mill, conveniently next door to Soul Cycle. Social Life sat down with the founder of Cool Zone Cryo, Dr. Daniel Fenster, to get the details on the new treatment. “Celebrities, models, and those descending on the Hamptons are over the moon for this natural and holistic treatment,” Dr. Fenster explains. Cryotherapy has been on the radar for athletes for years, but is becoming mainstream now that the rejuvenating properties have become apparent. “Many people have the misconception that cryotherapy is only for the body. But I have found that it can be just as beneficial and results-driving when applied to the face. This is why I created the Cool Zone Cryo facial rejuvenation treatment,” says Dr. Fenster, who has proudly been on the cutting edge of health and wellness in New York for over 30 years. A Cool Zone Cryo facial is just as it sounds, a cryotherapy facial treatment that leaves the skin younger, tighter, and healthier — rejuvenated. It uses liquid nitrogen vapors applied to the face and neck to stimulate the production of collagen and decrease pore size. Over time, skin becomes more elastic due to the increase in collagen. Through this, the skin becomes tighter, more even-toned, and blood circulation is improved. Collagen is a natural type of protein that gives skin its strength, but unfortunately as people age their collagen becomes disconnected and this causes the skin to thin, wrinkle, and sag. Facial rejuvenation cryotherapy has been termed the 20-minute, non-invasive, cooler alternative to Botox. “The great thing with Cool Zone Cryo’s facial is that my clients see amazing results within a few treatments. The most reported results include a reduction in puffiness, especially around the eye and cheek areas; a reduction in the appearance and feel of fine lines and wrinkles, a tightness around previously sagging SocialLifeMagazine.com

areas; and an immense boost of energy while also relieving stress.” In addition to directing Cool Zone Cryo, Dr. Fenster is the clinic director and chiropractor at Complete Wellness NYC. He has been practicing for 30 years in New York City, after having graduated from Life Chiropractic College in Marietta, Georgia. In an effort to fill a gap in the healthcare field, Dr. Fenster created Complete Wellness in 2007. His vision: “To treat patients with a unified synergy by merging essential services and amazing providers under one roof.” Dr. Fenster’s commitment to treating the “whole patient” has proved essential to finding solutions where conventional approaches have failed in the past. His renowned success at providing patients with long-term solutions that relieve their symptoms while also improving their overall health has made him the “chiropractor of choice” in New York and worldwide for a number of business leaders, professionals, athletes, celebrities, and countless others.

“I want to drive across America and sail around Greece and Sicily. I want to see the Aurora Borealis and the icebergs before they disappear. I want to speak fluent Italian and learn to dance hip hop,” says Christie Brinkley. This model, actress, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and environmentalist has accomplished so much, but these goals are still on her bucket list. I interviewed the iconic supermodel while she was filming a commercial and launching her Prosecco line Bellissima in California. In between filming her scenes, she revealed to me her secrets to achieving timeless beauty, the exact moment she decided to become an advocate for elephants, and her insider’s guide to the Hamptons. As reflected in her magnetic smile, Brinkley possesses a joie de vivre. Since she was discovered by a photographer when she was studying art in Paris, the stunning blonde has appeared on more than 500 magazine covers worldwide. Throughout her legendary career, she has been photographed in more than 30 countries, on six continents. Some of her most legendary photographs appeared in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. Brinkley was the first model to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated for three consecutive years.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

After not posing in a two-piece in nearly 30 years, Brinkley returned to her swimwear roots for the May 2013 issue of Social Life. The stunning cover of Brinkley flaunting a sexy bathing suit caused a splash worldwide. Looking absolutely gorgeous at 63, Brinkley says she attributes her timeless beauty to excellent skincare, including products from her own Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare; great nutrition; BioSil from the health food store for nails, skin, and hair; an attitude of gratitude; and a smile. She also thanks sunblock, which she wishes she had learned to use sooner. In November 2015, Grand Central Life & Style published her guide to health, beauty, and wellness titled Timeless Beauty: Over 100 Tips, Secrets, and Shortcuts to Looking Great. In the book, Brinkley shares the secrets she’s learned about what to eat, how to apply makeup like a pro, and what to wear to look like a knockout. The book debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list and remained for 11 weeks. During her extraordinary career, Brinkley had access to the best doctors and dermatologists worldwide. She used the vast knowledge she accumulated to create a multi-million-dollar beauty empire, including Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare,

Christie Brinkley Hair 2 Wear, and Christie Brinkley eyewear. In the summer of 2016, the supermodel extended her entrepreneurial endeavors to include an exclusive line of organic Prosecco made from grapes imported from Treviso, Italy. Approximately an hour’s drive from Venice, this region is where Italian sparkling wines were first produced amid breathtaking vistas in the foothills of the Alps, overlooking the surrounding valleys. The artwork on the Bellissima bottles is Brinkley’s own design, inspired by Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus. Brinkley says, “I love the fact that I am able to offer three delicious wines that are organic, vegan, all natural, gluten free, and one that’s even sugar free, to make life’s most beautiful or Bellissima moments into celebrations!” Brinkley is devoted to several animal causes. As a passionate animal advocate, Christie and her daughter Sailor traveled to South Africa and Kenya, in 2013, as ambassadors in support of the First Lady of Kenya’s “Hands Off Our Elephant” campaign and elephant and rhino anti-poaching campaigns of the United States and South Africa. In October 2013, Christie was also a leader of the world’s first International March for Elephants, in New York. Her passion for elephant advocacy was first ignited during a trip with Sports Illustrated to Kenya over 25 years ago. She brought her daughter Alexa, who was four years old at the time. One day, they were in a Land Rover — Brinkley on the roof, Alexa inside — weaving through acacia trees on the

savanna. “We were looking for elephants to be in the background of our Sports Illustrated Swimsuit pictures when we suddenly broke through some bushes, and I found myself eye to eye with a surprised and angry mother protecting her baby. She raised her trunk and trumpeted a warning!” Brinkley’s thoughts immediately raced to her own daughter. “If I had large ears, I would have flapped them back at her,” she says. “We clapped our car doors to show that we meant business too! We were two moms willing to die to protect our babies. I knew from that day forward I would always love and try to do my part to protect this matriarchal society of loving, intelligent, majestic animals.” Since that trip to Kenya, Brinkley has become involved with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. At the core of David Sheldrick Trust’s work is the Orphans’ Project. For the baby elephants, their journey begins at the nursery in Nairobi, where they receive the love and support they need to overcome the physical and psychological trauma of having been orphaned, and where they can start to enjoy the life they deserve. Brinkley says, “When a poacher kills the mother, they take with her all her knowledge that she uses to keep her herd safe. The tragedy of this horrific action far exceeds her death because it throws the whole herd into mourning. Elephants mourn their loved ones, including human loved ones, in an

almost inconsolable way. It’s heartbreaking.” Brinkley has adopted dozens of elephants through the David Sheldrick Trust. “It makes a great gift and DSWT keeps you informed of your babies’ progress. It’s love in action,” she says. At her home on Long Island, Brinkley’s deep love for animals continues with her pet labradoodle, Maple Sugar. “She’s a spry, active 14 year old who loves to travel, swim, and cuddle,” she says. Added to the mix is a rescue pup that Sailor got for Christmas from the Mainline Animal Rescue in Chester, Pennsylvania. “He’s a maltipoo with a Naplolean complex. He likes to think of himself as our ultimate protector. He’s got a lot of swagger, but he’s secretly afraid of the dark,” Brinkley says. In celebration of her love for dogs, Brinkley has recently partnered with Purina Pro Pan to focus on healthy aging for pets. “After decades of research, this Purina food is designed to keep our pets aged seven and older feeling healthy longer, and can even extend cats’ lives by a full year! I really believe in the power of a healthy diet for my whole family, and now I know I’m doing the best I can for my pet family, too,” she says. Brinkley’s love for her dogs is evident in her Instagram account. A recent post shows her rescue pup, Chester, posing in the middle of Brinkley’s lush garden filled with peach dahlias and tall stalks of blue delphiniums. In the summer months, Brinkley loves to garden at her Hamptons home. This year, she has expanded her organic vegetable garden to include a large cutting garden. “I always have a house full of freshly

cut, organic flowers. I don’t bring any chemicals indoors; I just bring in the beauty!” Brinkley says. She has enjoyed watching her children grow up in the garden. When they were little, she included them in the plantings and gave them the opportunity to see how they could have an impact on the land. “It got them excited about eating vegetables, and they still like to hang in the garden, even if it’s just to relax and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Nothing tastes better than fresh off the vine,” Brinkley says. When I ask what three women, past or present, she would invite to an intimate luncheon in her garden, she names her late mother and her two daughters, but she also wants to include her son, Jack. Brinkley says, “I would like my mom to impart her wisdom one more time, and through her thoughtful, loving advice and warm humor, my kids could see for themselves what a truly amazing person she was!” Despite her rich and busy life, Brinkley always takes time to enjoy the little things that make her smile. She says, “My kids and friends, my puppies, music, trying to dance, SNL, Stephen Colbert, and trying to yodel always cracks me up.” And when life throws her a curveball, she finds the courage to overcome obstacles “by counting my blessings. It always gives me perspective.” The beauty of the East End is one of the blessings she is grateful for. Here Brinkley shares with Social Life her insider guide to the Hamptons.

CHRISITE BRINKLEY’S INSIDER GUIDE TO THE HAMPTONS Favorite farm stand in the Hamptons? Green Thumb because it’s organic. Favorite dessert in the Hamptons? The sticky toffee cake at 1770 House. Favorite workout in the Hamptons? Running the beaches. Favorite place to go shopping in the Hamptons? Sag Harbor because it’s still very authentic. The shops are one of a kind. Favorite place to watch the sunset in the Hamptons? From a boat. Favorite summer beverage in the Hamptons? My organic, vegan, all-natural, gluten-free Bellissima Prosecco of course!

Favorite recipe to make in the Hamptons? Take one organic heirloom tomato warmed from the sun, fresh basil, Himalayan pink salt, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil to drizzle, fresh juicy mozzarella sliced same as tomatoes (from Villa Italian, aka the pork store, near the train station in East Hampton. They make the best). Here’s a great tip: the second I get it home, I empty the water around the mozzarella, put it in a baggy, and freeze it! I microwave it for about four minutes when I want to use it, and it tastes like it was just made! Warm and juicy! Really superb! Favorite beach book this summer in the Hamptons? Girls Like Us by Sheila Weller. Patti Hansen Richards gave me her copy after she had read it. It’s a biography of three of America’s most wonderful musical artists: Carole King, Carly Simon, and Joni Mitchell, whose music has scored many scenes in my cinematic life. Favorite activities with your pets in the Hamptons? Early morning run along the bay beaches. Watching them chase anyone in our swimming pool. Maple always ends up jumping in too. She’s an excellent swimmer. And both dogs love to snuggle by the campfire and watch the stars twinkle and the moon shimmer on the water.

GENERATIONAL GIVING By Jean Shafiroff

This chapter is being reprinted from Jean Shafiroff ’s book Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give, introduction by Georgina Bloomberg, and foreword by Scott Elkins, with the permission of the publisher, Hatherleigh Press.

“It takes a noble man to plant a seed for a tree that will someday give shade to people he may never meet.” — David E. Trueblood

W

e are the role models for our children and for future generations. As responsible parents, relatives, and citizens, we bear the duty of serving as good role models, to teach future generations the importance of giving back. The world and the society that our children inherit tomorrow will be the one we build and cultivate today! TEACHING CHILDREN THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING THE ROLE OF PARENTS One of the greatest gifts parents can give to their children is to teach them the importance of philanthropy and helping those in need. Parents can be the greatest teachers. Children listen to their parents and often emulate them. Philanthropy should begin at a young age. The need is there for us to all teach our children about giving back. Parents should encourage their children to find a cause that is of interest to them. A parent can help their children do this by exposing them to many different causes. Once an interest is found, the parent can help the child choose a well-run charity that they both might get involved with. The process of parent and child choosing a charity and then working together for a cause can be a great bonding experience.

By working together, the parent can teach the child many of life’s important skills as they relate to dealing with different kinds of people. A child will learn the importance of helping those less fortunate. Family bonding through philanthropy is something that can bring a family closer together over a lifetime. As the child gets older, the initial cause will hopefully remain of interest. A parent who teaches their children about giving back will have instilled very strong values — values that their children can keep throughout life. CHILDREN WHO ENGAGE PARENTS IN PHILANTHROPY Sometimes the reverse happens and a child will introduce a parent to a cause. A perfect example is the child who loves animals and asks if the family can adopt a dog or cat from a local shelter. By doing so, the child engages the family in furthering animal welfare. Other times, a child might come home from school with a story about an illness that he or she learned about. The child may be interested in becoming involved with an organization working to help find a cure. This might spur the same interest in the parent. Together, the parent and child can seek out a charity that would address their common desire to be part of the process of finding a cure. Once the right charity is found, the parent and child can become involved together as generational philanthropists. This act strengthens the bond between child and parent while also helping others! “The greatest of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” — Mahatma Gandhi A number of years ago, our daughters decided to get involved with animal rescue. As a child, I never had a pet other than a goldfish. Our daughters, Jacqueline and Elizabeth, first started by rescuing dogs and cats, and as each rescue came into the house, we fell in love with them. Later on, our daughters introduced me to the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. Both girls were involved with their junior committee. After becoming acquainted with the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation and those involved with it, I was asked to chair their annual gala. My first step was to do research on them. Once I was convinced that they were a well-run charity, I said yes to their request. I started by suggesting that they change their annual fundraiser from a cocktail party to a formal dinner gala, thereby enabling the Shelter to raise five to six times more money. I have now chaired the event for four years in a row. As a team, we have been able to raise well over $2 million from the four galas. All of this took hard work. I am grateful to my daughters for introducing me to the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. It is now ranked among the top 10 percent of shelters in the United States! Three years ago I was asked to join their Honorary Board and I accepted. Today, I remain very active with the Southampton Animal Shelter and love every minute of my volunteer work with them. TEACHING THE IMPORTANCE OF PHILANTHROPY IN SCHOOL There is no doubt that philanthropy and the importance of giving must be taught in our schools, including higher learning institutions. The value of giving must be one of the top priorities of our educational system. Children must learn the necessity of providing help to those in need and they must be taught to care for the underserved. Thankfully, some educational institutions do teach children the importance of giving. However, all educational institutions should require that courses on giving and philanthropy be taught to its students. These courses need to take place in both public and private schools in the United States and throughout the world. Children should be involved in community service activities and fundraising efforts, which can include volunteering at soup kitchens, senior citizens homes, and local animal shelters, just to name a few. There should be different volunteer options made available for children. Of course, adult supervision is always required. Basic fundraising activities such as bake sales, toy and clothing drives, penny collections, and raising small amounts of money for little league uniforms are all great ways to get children involved in learning about philanthropy. Children should never be asked to raise large sums of money; the key is to make the act of giving interesting to children so that they will want to make philanthropy a part of their lives. For example, Mingxing Lin moved to New York City from

China with her mother and brothers in 2012 and enrolled at the Emma Lazarus High School on the Lower East Side as a sophomore. She and her mother could not speak English. Desperate to learn and move ahead, she discovered the Learning to Work program given by the New York Mission Society. This program helps over-aged and under-credited high school students graduate. The program’s counselors informed her of different college and career options. As her English improved, she realized she wanted to be of help to others. NYC Mission Society helped her get a paid internship in which she was able to help other Chinese immigrants. Her burgeoning awareness led her to run for president of the school’s student government, and she won. The 19 year old graduated in the spring of 2015 and began her college studies at City College in the fall of 2015. Mingxing Lin dreams of becoming a math teacher. THE ROLE OF RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS IN TEACHING PHILANTHROPY Religion institutions play a major in teaching children the value of philanthropy. No one would argue against the role that most religions play in teaching young people the importance of helping those in need. THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY AND GOVERNMENT IN TEACHING PHILANTHROPY Many communities encourage young people to get involved in giving back. All government and community activities that encourage children to participate in philanthropy are of great value.

PHILANTHROPY FOR RETIREES AND EMPTY NESTERS Retirees, people who have worked all their lives and often very productively, may find that they suddenly have too much time on their hands with not enough to do. After years of leading very busy and productive lives, they often find they would like more to do with their time, so they look for interesting projects to become engaged with. An empty nester, defined as a parent whose child has grown up and moved along, often feels the same way as a retiree: both frequently come to the realization that they have far too much leisure time and not enough activities. Often, both retirees and empty nesters can be rather young—in their forties and early fifties—and in great physical and mental shape. Most retirees have been involved in a career all their life, while empty nesters have had the valuable experience of raising a family. Both groups often look for interesting projects to fill their days. Becoming involved with a charity by volunteering time can be very fulfilling for both retirees and empty nesters, while they can bring a wealth of knowledge to the charity. Both retirees and empty nesters generally have numerous available resources to give to nonprofits. They have worked hard and may have substantial savings. At this stage in their life they may feel that they want to be productive and help those in need. Retirees and empty nesters can receive great fulfillment through their involvement with philanthropy. They often have highly developed skill sets that younger people do not have. These skills can be invaluable to different charities. Retirees and empty nesters can make excellent board members of charities. Social Life

They have the time, knowledge, and resources that boards often look for. Empty nesters and retirees often enjoy the social aspects of their involvement with new charities. They meet new friends and are able to engage in more activities away from their homes. Philanthropic work can add new meaning to an otherwise rather placid life. For example, Dan was a successful plastic surgeon from Chicago who decided to retire at age 55. After years of performing surgery, he was tired and wanted to enjoy his remaining years. His wife had recently passed away from cancer. Dan was lonely and wanted a way to fill his time. He moved to Florida and started to play golf. He then started to travel. Finally he decided that neither meant much to him. He had always loved the oceans and rivers and decided to get involved with a national water conservation charity, soon becoming fully absorbed in their work. Dan continues to play a little golf and still travels, but now his life has more meaning than it ever had before. He is enjoying his retirement and has even started to date. Dan is leading a fulfilling life while also giving back! Kay had worked as an executive assistant for a mediumsized company for most of her life. Although Kay was married and then later divorced, she never had any children of her own. When her nieces and nephews were young, she was involved in raising them and had lived a very busy life. Upon retiring at age 65, she found that she still had enormous amounts of energy, but very little to do with her time. So Kay, who lives in Brooklyn, decided to volunteer at a religious school in East New York. To this day, she still works an average of three full days a week as a volunteer at the school. She says her volunteer SocialLifeMagazine.com

work has enriched her life enormously. It gives her a reason to get up every day, and she loves helping out at the school. Kay has made many friends with both the parents and teachers. The students love to see her, too. Kay is much happier volunteering her time and is grateful that she does not have to sit around all day with nothing to do but watch television. Jim, a self-made man living in Chicago, successfully built up a major hedge fund. At the age of 47, Jim started a family foundation which has since grown to be one of the largest in the United States. One day, Jim decided he had had enough of his business. He had earned more than he could ever expect to spend in 10 lifetimes, so at the age of 57, Jim closed his hedge fund and retired from the business. Today he manages his own money and the family foundation. He and his wife, Kate, show their gratitude for his success by giving substantial contributions to major educational institutions. They also give smaller donations to a variety of other charities (almost all of their giving is done anonymously). Jim and Kate have found great happiness through giving!

ABOUT JEAN SHAFIROFF Jean Shafiroff, a philanthropist, a humanitarian, an activist, and the author of Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give, is a volunteer leader of several charitable causes. She serves on the boards of eight charities and, in addition, is an ambassador for the American Humane Society. Jean is married to Martin D. Shafiroff, an investments advisor, and together they have two daughters. She and her family reside in Manhattan and Southampton.

GROUP FOR THE EAST END “SWINGS INTO SUMMER” HONORING JOEY WÖLFFER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION By Christopher London With Photos By Gregory Partanio and ManhattanSociety.com

O

n June 17, The Bridge, in Bridgehampton, was the scene for the second Swing into Summer benefit for the Group for the East End (affectionately referred to as “The Group”), the preëminent environmental advocacy, education, and conservation organization. This year, more than 250 supporters attended the benefit. Richard Kind served as the evening’s emcee and the relentless, yet hilariously effective, auctioneer. Stéphane Samuel and Robert M. Rubin once again served as hosts. In Roman mythology, Ceres is the goddess of the environment. And The Group awarded its first Ceres Award to its longtime supporter Joey Wölffer. She is the daughter of the Wölffer Vineyard’s founder, the late Christian Wölffer, who had preserved 115 acres of prime Hamptons real estate to

The Group issued the following statement in connection with the unique award. “Following in her father’s footsteps, Joey Wölffer who owns Wölffer Estate Vineyard with her brother, uses water recycling methods to reduce the need for pesticides, and employs the necessary practices to help prevent soil erosion. The Winery is one of the few Long Island Vineyards certified as sustainable by Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing, and we are delighted to serve Wölffer Wines exclusively at our benefit.” “The Group has been working for more than four decades to protect our bays, harbors, and drinking water on the East End,” explained The Group’s board chair, Katherine Leahy Birch. “The financial support we receive from the event helps us make sure children can swim and fish in our coastal waters without getting ill, and we’ll always have fresh, clean water to drink.” Despite the fog setting in early, from the hilltop clubhouse designed by the architect Roger Ferris, attendees took in unforgettable sunset views of Peconic Bay, enjoyed an array of specialty cocktails as well as a variety of local wines from Wölffer Estate Vineyard, and dined on tasty hors d’oeuvres and dinner prepared by The Bridge, an A-list private club and golf course. Wölffer Estate Vineyard and The Bridge are model corporate citizens on the East End. Each illustrate in different ways how responsible commerce can meets the goals of conservation and how logical and practical environmental protection can help make both the individual enterprise and the greater community more sustainable over the long haul. 2017 co-chairs were Katherine and Marco Birch, Graciela and Munir Dauhajre, Genevieve and Robert Lynch, and Kerry Heffernan. MARK BARON & JANE BABCOOK A ONE-TWO PUNCH By Jim Cassavettes

T

hey’ve been called the dynamic duo of East End real estate, and this year, Brown Harris Stevens’ Mark Baron and Jane Babcook are offering an approach not always available to the typical buyer. “The type of concierge service our customers demand and deserve is above and beyond the conventional agent-client relationship that clients have too often become used to,” says Mark Baron, a local real estate legend with more than a decade under his belt. “So, what we’re doing is combining forces, everything that makes us individually unique, to provide our clients with an exceptional level of service.” Recently, Social Life caught up with the always-busy Mark and Jane for the 411 on what’s hot, what’s not, and what should be on anyone’s buying mind. What are you seeing happening in the market this year that surprises you? Mark Baron: It’s not really a surprise, as we saw this coming: sales in the one to five million dollar range have been the most active in 2017, when, traditionally, the Hamptons has been known for the higher end. There seems to be a movement to simplify and scale down to smaller properties. Is that happening in the Hamptons? Jane Babcook: There is definitely a trend for smaller properties. For example, we just closed on several properties in the villages of Sag Harbor and Bridgehampton, where the buyers have downsized from large estates to the simplicity of the village lifestyle. What are the top three things buyers should be paying attention to now more than ever before? MB: Quality of construction is key; comparable sales; and being sure that the location is right for them.

What’s the hot must-have right now from a buyer’s perspective? JB: Turnkey new construction, smarthouse technology, salt or saline pools, open living space, and a first-floor bedroom. What’s your top ‘buyer beware’ caution these days? MB: To make sure they are working with an experienced broker who understands not only the current market conditions but also their potential upside and downside. We bring a combined experience of over 35 years and work as both buyers’ and sellers’ agents. What will be next year’s hot thing that you think people should be focusing on now? JB: New construction will continue to be a trend, and getting in prior to completion usually allows for some customization. Our listing on 4 Ludlow Green, featured in your Memorial Day issue, is a perfect example. If you’re hoping to be in a new home by next spring, now is the time to be looking. Do you think real estate reality TV shows tell it like it is? MB: A lot of the reality shows appear to be contrived; however, certain shows like Million Dollar Listing New York do resemble our day-to-day real estate business because of the similarities to our high-end Hamptons market. MANHATTAN’S BEST 5-STAR HOTELS THE CHATWAL STRIKES THE PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN LIFESTYLE & LUXURY By Blaire Bass

L

uxury travel aficionados know they can count on one hand the number of hotels that are guaranteed to satisfy their discerning taste. The Chatwal properties are in that exclusive group. And we can guarantee you, they never fail to amaze. This summer, Social Life scoped out what the very best Manhattan hotels have to offer, and we selected The Chatwal as the best place to simmer down, pamper up, and enjoy an all-around stay of absolute luxury. How do we define luxury? It’s defined by the highest quality in every detail. For the jet-setting, well-heeled crowd, the exquisite Midtown New York City boutique hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Manhattan, near Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, and the Theater District, just steps away from world-renowned restaurants and shopping. Bridging classic and contemporary like no other, the landmark hotel was originally built in 1905 by Stanford White. In 2010, it was restored and renewed by the master architect Thierry Despont. The Chatwal New York boasts 76 rooms, including specialty suites, many with spacious terraces — a coveted and rare indulgence in Manhattan. The hotel’s signature butler service will certainly leave not a single desire unfulfilled. And if the spa is your vice, pop into the Red Door Spa by Elizabeth Arden and be prepared to be pampered and prepped. The Chatwal also features The Lamb’s Club restaurant, which serves modern American cuisine curated by its chef, Geoffrey Zakarian, and has a second floor lounge with beautiful floor-to-ceiling views of the city. The hotel is the culmination of the extraordinary vision and dedication of Sant Singh Chatwal, the chairman of the Dream Hotel Group. A recognized business leader, diplomat, and humanitarian, Chatwal’s Dream Hotel Group boasts many beloved lifestyle brands, including Dream, Time, The Chatwal, and Unscripted. The company also oversees the food and beverage experience at the iconic Plaza Hotel. Clearly, he knows what he’s doing! But Sant Singh Chatwal’s achievements are not all about pomp and circumstance. He believes in giving back through his many generous philanthropic endeavors. The list of his altruistic pursuits are seemingly endless. One that touched our hearts was his work with Friends of Island Academy, an organization dedicated to rebuilding the lives of adolescents newly released from jail in New York City. Not only is Chatwal actively involved in mentoring these troubled youths, he has also developed a hospitality training program that empowers these children to rebuild their lives successfully through education and work opportunities. FROM RECORDS TO REAL ESTATE NOEL LOVE BRINGS HIS A-GAME TO REAL ESTATE OUT EAST By Lizabeth Zindel

L

ong before joining Saunders & Associates, Noel Love began his career in 1965 by working in the music industry for Motown Records, responsible for achieving airplay for all the Motown artists on the local radio stations. Noel would make sure disc jockeys like Bruce Morrow (“Cousin Brucie”) and many others gave maximum airplay to Motown artists like the Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, to name a few. Having mastered music promotion on a national scale, in 1975 Noel started his own company, which in its first year was named the Independent Promotion Company of the year by Billboard magazine. It was while promoting major label artists that Noel met David Krebs, the manager of Aerosmith, Def Leppard, AC/DC, and Metallica, and others, who hired him to promote his artists. In 1993, Noel moved to the Hamptons and managed restaurants (including Bobby Van’s and the American Hotel), transitioning into real estate in 1995. Recruited by Brown Harris Stevens in 1998, he was involved with over $250 million worth of transactions. Since joining Saunders & Associates, Noel has doubled his business. ERIN DOWNEY LUXE TRENDS IN HAMPTONS NEW CONSTRUCTION By Lizabeth Zindel

E

rin Downey, of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, knows a thing or two about the latest trends in Hamptons new construction. Since joining Douglas Elliman in 2011, she has become an expert on the newest architectural layouts as well as high-tech and high-end amenities. A resident of Water Mill, she personally knows the magic of the East End. “The energy in the Hamptons is one that cannot be replicated. The mix of people matched with the gorgeous agricultural backdrop, complemented by the ocean, yields a recipe of uniqueness and fun that makes purchasing a home here so intriguing,” she says. Her gorgeous property at 18 Seven Ponds Road was featured in the Wall Street Journal. The resort-style, newly constructed Hamptons transitional, with a year-round indoor pool and spa, was recently put into contract. Luckily, the builder, Hamptons Luxury Estates, has two other gorgeous properties for sale at 475 and 485 David Whites Lane, Southampton. “My client, Yale Fishman, of Hamptons Luxury Estates, makes it a point ‘to only sell something that is absolutely perfect,’ and I am with him on that!” Downey says.” When asked about the latest trends in Hamptons new construction, she says, “It’s the new era of pool houses. We are talking seethrough linear gas fireplaces and customized, interior design fit for a king or queen.” Developers and architectural designers are also creating kitchens that cater to dietary preferences, such as vegan and kosher lifestyles. “Prepare yourself for duplicate and triplicate appliances and specialty customizations,” she says. In addition, Downey says buyers and developers are placing a high value on agricultural views. And some of these views are beautiful enough to compare favorably with desirable water views. Many buyers are also now favoring new construction north of the highway versus a fixer-upper or a knock down south of it. To offer clients an additional luxury service, Downey opened the high-end Erin Downey Salon in Southampton, in 2015. “I like to invite my clients to my hair salon in the village to luxuriate while getting their hair done by my amazing team. Takes the edge off making big real estate decisions!” Downey says. The excellent salon is the go-to spot for A-listers in Southampton. Don’t be surprised if you discover your Hamptons dream home while getting beach curls! 475 David Whites Lane, Southampton, features smart-home technology, a gourmet kitchen with designer stone countertops and high-end appliances, a formal dining room, and custom cabinets and touches throughout.

SUNSET TOWER HOTEL WHERE TO STAY & EAT IN L.A. By Joe Alexander

Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theater, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City. His stories have been featured in numerous national magazines, including Haute Living. Joe lives in Manhattan and Southampton with his Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Cornelia and Webster.

“I am living in a very posh establishment, the Sunset Tower, which, or so the local gentry tell me, is where every scandal that ever happened happened,” Truman Capote wrote in 1947, when he stayed at the Los Angeles landmark while working on an article for Vogue. The Art Deco structure was innovative when it opened, in 1929, as a luxury apartment building. It was the first earthquake-proof structure in L.A.; offered modern conveniences, including electrical outlets in every bathroom; and had floor-toceiling windows with panoramic views. CELEBRITY GUESTS Famous folks who have resided at the Sunset Tower over the years include Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Conrad Hilton, Clarke Gable and Carole Lombard, Greta Garbo, Mae West, Joan Crawford, and the gangster Bugsy Siegel. John Wayne lived in what is now the spa, and kept a pet cow on his balcony, reportedly so that guests could have fresh milk with their coffee. (What, no horse?) Iggy Pop repeatedly dove from his apartment window into the swimming pool; sometimes it went smoothly, but at least once a month an ambulance was required after his wacky gymnastics. Later in its life, the building lost its status and fell into disrepair. In fact, it would have been demolished in the early 1980s, but for actor Werner Klemperer, most famous for playing Colonel Klink on Hogan’s Heroes, who refused to move out. At that time, even though the building was considered an architectural gem, there were no laws to prevent it from being torn down. By the time Klemperer was finally evicted, preservation laws had been enacted to protect such landmark buildings.

THE TOWER BAR, HOLLYWOOD’S HOTTEST SPOT When the Sunset Tower first opened, its location was close to the most popular nightspots of the 1930s and ’40s. Today, after hotelier Jeff Klein and his JK Hotel Group brought the property back to life and rechristened it the Sunset Tower Hotel, in 2005, its Tower Bar is the L.A. hangout for power players to see and be seen. “You cannot beat the room. It radiates old Hollywood glamour and pulses with new Hollywood excitement,” Graydon Carter told The Hollywood Reporter in 2016. Carter’s Vanity Fair held its famous Oscar party at the venue for several years. Mick Jagger, Jennifer Lawrence, Aaron Sorkin, Clive Davis, Karl Lagerfeld, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Will Smith, Tom Ford, Emma Roberts, Bill Murray, and the late Nancy Reagan are just a few of the boldfaced names who have been spotted dining at the Tower Bar. Dimitri Dimitrov, the Tower Bar’s legendary, charming maître d’, is one of the most powerful people in Hollywood. The restaurant serves breakfast (this is the preferred power-breakfast spot for local honchos), lunch, and dinner in an elegant Art Deco room with spectacular views of L.A., and there is also a terrace for outdoor poolside dining. The fare is comfort food: think lobster tacos, turkey BLT wraps, and grilled shrimp with quinoa.

THE RENOVATION: COKE DEALERS BE GONE After buying the building in 2005, Klein enlisted the interior designer Paul Fortune to head the restoration, with the mission of retaining the Sunset Tower’s beauty while giving it a more modern feel. Fortune, who is on the AD100 list of designers, knew the building, having been there in the 1970s. “My drug dealer lived there. It was really dumpy. You had to walk up 10 flights of stairs to get coke, ” he told The Hollywood Reporter. He added that the existing décor prior to his makeover was “horrifying, a really nasty late ’70s, early ’80s version of Deco.” The lustrous paneling in the Tower Bar today is a reproduction of the original, from when that space was Bugsy Siegel’s apartment.

(Top) Tower Bar (Bottom) Sunset Tower Penthouse Suite

of opulence, complete with a private terrace and a sweeping grand staircase. You can make your entrance like they did in the Golden Age of Hollywood, and purr, “Why don’t you come up and see me sometime?” The penthouse suites are equally swanky, with 2,000 square feet of luxury, and wraparound terraces provide the backdrop for your cinematic seduction scenes.

JEFF KLEIN Jeff Klein, the man behind Sunset Tower, launched the renowned City Club Hotel in New York, quickly making it a successful venue. Klein is also a partner at the Monkey Bar, the famed New York eatery that dates back to 1936.

ROOMS AND SUITES The spacious, renovated rooms perfectly fill Klein’s mandate of keeping intact the Sunset Tower’s original Art Deco grandeur and warmth while adding a modern sensibility. The floor-to-ceiling windows and Deco-style furnishings brimming with dark woods and polished brass are comfortable, luxurious, and evocative of an earlier, more elegant era, while the state-of-the-art TVs, docking stations for devices, and Kiehl’s products in the bathrooms remind you that this is 2017. And then there are the suites, which range in size from 550-squarefoot studios to duplex townhouse suites comprising 1,650 square feet SocialLifeMagazine.com

WORLD-CLASS SPA Wash your cares away at the Sunset Tower’s Cure Salon & Spa, a relaxing oasis offering that Old-World service from a roster of top practitioners in today’s most-wanted treatments. There is everything from nail and hair care to massage, waxes, injectables, beauty and body treatments, rejuvenating and vitalizing peels, and facials. Los Angeles Magazine declared Cure’s Turkish bath the best in the city. Sunset Tower has small private hamams, where you steam on a travertine bed before taking a cool dip under a rain shower.

PETS ARE WELCOME You’ll feel spoiled pampering yourself at the Sunset Tower, and so will your pet, which gets its own bowl, treats, and mini Sunset Tower bed. A dog park is next door to the hotel, so Fido can run around off-leash. sunsettowerhotel.com

JEFF KLEIN: SUNSET TOWER MEET THE HOTELIER By Joe Alexander

I

n 2005, Jeff Klein bought L.A.’s storied but faded Sunset Tower Hotel, where in its glory days Howard Hughes stashed his mistresses, Frank Sinatra wooed Ava Gardner from his bachelor pad, and Diana Ross had Tim Curry push the elevator buttons because her fingernails were too long to do it herself. The celebrated hotelier renovated and reinvigorated the Art Deco landmark, and swiftly restored its status as the hotspot for today’s Hollywood elite.

NOBODY WANTED TO BUY THE PROPERTY You’d imagine there had been a bidding war for the iconic property, an official landmark by 2005, but it was exactly the opposite. “Nobody wanted to buy it,” Klein says. “It was a dump; they couldn’t give it away.” The owners kept lowering the price. “Thankfully, nobody saw what I saw in it,” Klein says, adding that it wasn’t easy to come up with the cash. “I had to scramble and put money together from aunts and uncles and all these investors.” That scenario today, Klein believes, would be different because people want to own real estate, regardless of the status of the hotel on the site.

HUSBAND JOHN GOLDWYN TAUGHT KLEIN THE WAYS OF L.A. A native New Yorker who made his name with the trendy City Club Hotel there, which included Daniel Boulud’s restaurant DB Bistro Moderne, Klein’s first project in L.A. was the Sunset Tower. He was dating producer John Goldwyn, now his husband, who asked Klein how he intended to go about drawing celebrities to his new venue. ‘I was like, ‘I don’t want celebrities; celebrities are a pain in the ass,’” Klein told him. “And he was, like, ‘Dorothy, you’re not in Kansas anymore. That’s a big mistake,’ and thank God he caught it before I opened,” Klein laughs. Today, the place is a must for Hollywood’s power brokers, and is home to CAA’s annual Golden Globes after-party, which according to the Hollywood Reporter, “always proves to be one of the night’s hottest events.” Klein says that Goldwyn, the grandson of the movie legend Samuel Goldwyn, really helped him to understand what an important role Hollywood plays in L.A. “Talk about mentors. He really became, like, my Jedi trainer in Hollywood, and not only did he introduce me to all of Hollywood, but he taught me

The hotelier Jeff Klein by pool at the Sunset Tower

how to court them and create a place where they feel comfortable and wanted,” Klein says. “He obviously understands that very deeply, and he was so instrumental in everything I did.”

LESSON NO. 1: DISCRETION IS PARAMOUNT One thing that Klein has learned as the proprietor of a celebrity hangout is that discretion is of utmost importance. This knowledge came the hard way, when Britney Spears tried to book some rooms during her head-shaving phase. Klein told the manager that he didn’t want her there, and somebody in the lobby overheard him. “I learned my lesson from that not to say anything in the lobby.” Social Life



T R AV E L

DIMITRI : LEGENDARY MAÎTRE D’ One person who could give lessons in discretion is the Tower Bar’s legendary maître d’, Dimitri Dimitrov, who goes by only his first name, and on whose good side everyone in Hollywood clamors to be. Klein resented it when his friend Tom Ford first urged him to hire Dimitri after being seated at less-than-desirable spots once too often. “I was really annoyed with him. So it wasn’t until Mitch Glazer, the producer, said the same exact thing completely independent of Tom that I thought maybe I should call this guy.” So he did, and loved him. “I don’t think I’ve ever told anybody this, but the interesting thing about Dimitri is nobody would hire him,” Klein says. “When I hired him, he couldn’t get a job because restaurateurs thought that he was a real relic of the past: that sort of oldschool maître d’ — it’s not cool; and he’s older — you know?” Klein says that nowadays, when he goes out to dinner with Dimitri on his day off, it’s like being with a celebrity. “People just come up to him; they love him. It’s so funny.”

KLEIN STARTED AS A BELLMAN Klein had always wanted to be in the hotel business, and unsure what to do after graduating from Tulane in 1993, he got a job in the field, as a bellhop, to the astonishment of his friends and his family, who lived on Park Avenue. “What I realized about myself was I wasn’t ashamed or embarrassed at all,” Klein says. “What it really did for me was confirm this was exactly where I should be, because I love this industry so much.” That initial hospitality industry job was with Bernard Goldberg, who owned a few New York hotels, and was one of the pioneers of the 1990s boutique hotel industry, along with Ian Schrager and Bill Kimpton. “I moved up through his organization, and he really taught me everything I know today,” Klein says.

A HOTELIER, NOT A HOTEL OWNER “Even though I own hotels, I’m a true hotelier,” says Klein. “A hotelier is really involved, and a hotel owner is just interested in the real estate, really, and it’s more of a transaction to them. For me, it’s so much deeper than that.” That means he is extremely involved with every aspect of his properties, from the operation to design to marketing. “If there is new silverware, I’ve picked it out.”

A NEW DEAL, NEW PROJECT Recently, Klein reached a deal to sell a stake in the Sunset Tower to a new financial partner, Len Blavatnik, for $100 million. His aunts, uncles, and other original investors have since SocialLifeMagazine.com

Maître d’ Dimitri Dimitrov at the Tower Bar

been paid back, reaping fourteen times their original investment. The interiors will be refreshed, but will retain the same basic look. “When you walk into the hotel rooms, you’re not going to think that anything’s new.”

SAN VICENTE INN Klein and his JK Hotel Group recently acquired the San Vicente Inn in L.A., which he will turn into a private membership club, with bungalows surrounding a pool. The bungalows were built in the 1800s for railroad workers, and like Sunset Tower, the property slid into disrepair over the years. “Nobody could see it; all they could see is what was there, rather than what it could be,” Klein says. “When I look at stuff, I always have to see what the potential is, how I can envision it looking. It’s a really cool property.” The place was at one time a gay bathhouse, and Klein has received some backlash from the local gay community. “I think it’s ridiculous, because as a gay man, I don’t believe that bathhouses are part of our culture,” says Klein. He added that the place was “hemorrhaging money” due to a lack of customers, because people don’t go to bathhouses anymore; they use hook-up apps.

WHAT TO DO IN L.A. MUSEUMS, HISTORIC HOUSES & GARDENS By Joe Alexander

T

here is more to do in Hollywood and Pasadena than go to the movies. Here is a sampling of what you shouldn’t miss.

THE BROAD MUSEUM The Broad Museum’s permanent collection includes over 2,000 works by contemporary artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, Jeff Koons, Jasper Johns, Kara Walker, and Robert Rauschenberg. The museum’s founders, Eli and Edythe Broad, have been acquiring art for more than 50 years, and the Broad boasts the world’s largest collection of works by the photographer Cindy Sherman. A recent retrospective, Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life, featured photographs of the artist portraying female stereotypes such as “screen siren,” “socialite,” and “businesswoman,” drawing from the history of media, cinema, and advertising.

This summer’s special exhibitions are Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room (through September 30) and Oracle, a look at globalization in contemporary society, with work by thirty artists, including Terry Winters, William Kentridge, and Andreas Gursky (through September 3). thebroad.org

THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART (MOCA) Established in 1979, MOCA, Los Angeles, features American and European contemporary work created after 1940. Some current exhibitions worth your attention are Peter Shire: Naked is the Best Disguise and Jonas Wood: Still Life with Two Owls. moca.org Social Life

THE HUNTINGTON MUSEUM PASADENA, CALIFORNIA THE JAPANESE GARDEN

BONSAI AND ZEN COURT

Arguably the most popular spot at The Huntington, the Japanese garden has attracted more than 20 million visitors from all over the world and has always been a place of extreme allure, charm, and contemplation. The garden educates guests on Japan’s landscape traditions. Completed in 1912, the nine-acre Japanese garden was inspired by a fascination with Asian culture. At the time, many American and Europeans added exotic gardens to their estates, including Huntington, who built a Japanese garden on his San Marino estate.

The Bonsai collection and Zen court were added in 1968, when the garden was expanded. The Huntington has served as the Southern California site for the Bonsai Federation; displays are rotated throughout the year to highlight what’s in season, and its collection of trees number in the hundreds. The Zen court is an example of the contained landscapes that were grown in the temple gardens of Japan.

THE ARBOR OF PURE BREEZE The Arbor of Pure Breeze, or ceremonial teahouse, was donated to The Huntington by the Pasadena Buddhist temple. Seven years ago, the teahouse was taken back to Japan for restoration that was overseen by the architect Yoshiaki Nakamura, whose father built the original. Unfortunately, they do not serve tea here. SocialLifeMagazine.com

THE BLUE BOY One of the world’s most famous oil paintings can be seen at The Huntington: The Blue Boy, by the English portrait and landscape artist Thomas Gainsborough. Henry E. Huntington purchased the painting at the same time he purchased Gainsborough’s Cottage Door and Joshua Reynolds’s Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse, all from the Duke of Westminster. RITZ CARLTON FORT LAUDERDALE By Inna DeSilva

T

his luxury resort is a great alternative when traveling with family and skipping the madness of South Beach seems imperative. I experienced the Ritz Carlton’s wonderful service in early November. I walked in frazzled from barely sleeping the night before — having stayed up to watch the election results — and in need of some serious TLC. The young woman who checked me in was warm and gracious, and she upgraded me to club level. I then immediately proceeded to the lounge for a glass of complimentary prosecco. The rooms at this Ritz are large and filled with many of those wonderful Ritz touches like plush robes, cozy slippers, and original photographs on the walls. The bed was fantastic and the tub extra-large. My terrace overlooked the beach, and I loved making calls from there while staring at the ocean. The staff in the executive lounge were top-notch, earning five stars from me. I loved the breakfast I was served there. Frankly, I preferred it to breakfast from room service. It’s completely worth the extra money to be at club level. When you factor in breakfast,

snacks, and drinks, you actually save money. The pool area was a little too crowded with kids for my taste. Although the sage bartender in the pool bar was one of those guys who made your drinks and solved your life’s problems at the same time. The spa was fantastic. It offers amazing service and excellent massage therapists and aestheticians. The spa boutique came in handy for bath oils and candles. The beach in front of the hotel was very nice. Plush towels and cold bottled water were always available. I swam there several times. The only improvement I would like to see is at the resort’s restaurant, Burlock Coast. The food was too heavy for this New Yorker’s taste: not enough simple, grilled dishes and too much dairy in many dishes. The dining room itself is very pretty, but too large. In my opinion, the owners should divide the space into two separate dining establishments. The busy stretch of Beach Boulevard could use a good sushi place. Otherwise, this is a top-notch resort with great service. ritzftlauderdale.reservations.com Social Life

TURKS AND CAICOS YEP, YOU CAN BRING THE KIDS By Peter Cooper

L

et’s face it: there are times when we must bring our children with us on holiday. Those little rug rats! Unfortunately, those of you who enjoy the Caribbean know that several days of island hopping by boat is not a relaxing way to enjoy your time away if you have tots in tow. And, for better or worse, not all islands are created equal: some feature a resort or two that are kid-friendly, and some boast beaches of repute. But, as a parent, you know there’s never enough. Turks and Caicos is breaking that rule by offering a plethora of family-friendly resorts and an equally impressive number of activities to keep kids occupied and maintain their parents’ sanity. Herewith are a couple of our favorites.

SURFSIDE OCEAN ACADEMY WAKE-SKI SCHOOL Certified wakeboard and water ski instructors take you out on the water with the best boats and equipment, for both beginners and experts. Tubing is also available on request.

MARINE EDUCATION & GUIDED SNORKEL EXPERIENCE On land, with a marine naturalist, you first learn the unique geography and geology of the Turks and Caicos Islands as well as the fascinating formation and importance of coral reefs. You then move to the National Marine Park for a briefing on snorkel etiquette and snorkel instruction, followed by a guided underwater tour. Social Life

THE TURKS TREASURE HUNT & MERMAID ENCOUNTER Kids love to set sail with map in hand for a swashbuckling adventure at sea on this hunt for buried treasure! Search for the mystical mermaid Bella and rise to her challenge to win secrets that lead across deserted islands and open oceans on the trail for pirate booty. This is a fun-filled, one-of-a-kind experience for the whole family.

Middle, including stunning Mujan Harbour, the bat caves, and the co-op farms. A concierge will arrange a picnic, drinks, and water for your day out.

KAYAKING AND ECO SAFARI

This half-day educational, ocean-based experience brings you up close and personal with sea turtles. The unique and experiential conservation program covers the marine biology of sea turtles and takes you out on the ocean, where you assist marine experts with the tagging and releasing of turtles, while snorkeling various sites along the way. Total magic!

Kayaking is best for older kids, but sensational for whoever has the skill. The natural beauty of Grand Turk can often best be enjoyed by kayaking to Madison Point and exploring the coast on foot. Take in the beauty and tranquility of nature as you paddle a two-person glass-bottom kayak through gentle, shallow waters surrounded by mangroves. You can explore small coves, marveling at tropical plants, birds, and impressive Osprey nests. The transparent kayak will allow you to view the marine life that lives within the beautiful Caribbean Sea. Enjoy an eco-adventure walk along the coastline, which is also great for bird watching.

FISH FOR YOUR DISH

CREATE YOUR OWN DAY

You and your family can go fishing at sea, and the captain will fillet your catch. Once you’re back in your suite, cook your catch and dine while watching the sun set. Or take your catch to The Regent Grand’s The Vix Restaurant and allow its chefs to cook it for you.

Grand Slam Charters is one of several services that can help you fashion a perfect day based on your family’s likes and wants. Whether it’s deep-sea fishing, flats or reef fishing, snorkeling, island tours, or anywhere your imagination wanders, rely on a boat and your local, highly skilled captain and crew to drive memories.

SEA TURTLE PROJECT

HALF-DAY SNORKELING Get picked up on the beach or in the hotel lobby, or take a short drive to the local marina. From there, you and your family will sail to a reef, where you can snorkel and hunt for conch. Then visit the famous Half Moon beach or Dellis Cay, and search for shells and sand dollars.

EXPLORE MIDDLE CAICOS Visit the biggest, but one of the least developed islands in Turks and Caicos. We suggest taking a ferry to North, which is about a 35-minute ride from Providenciales. A taxi/minivan will then provide a tour of the main sites of North and SocialLifeMagazine.com

ISLAND FISH FRY Every Thursday from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Bight Children’s Park, over a dozen local food vendors, entertainers, and cultural acts come together for Island Fish Fry, creating an evening of “all things TCI.” This special event has been growing week by week, an exciting evening in a fun, family-style setting. The aroma of frying fish permeates the air, and the scene is visually exciting as vats of roiling water cook lobsters and conch salad masters ply their craft. turksandcaicostourism.com

UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN VITIGLIANO TUSCAN RELAIS AND BORGO PIGNANO By Anthony Giampetruzzi

Vitigliano Tuscan Relais

I

f you’ve been to Tuscany, you know that one word can sum up the experience: magic. Whether you’ve visited the spectacular Old World city of Florence, ventured off the beaten path to a best-keptsecret provincial hamlet, or vineyard-hopped to soak in the region’s namesake wines, you know no Tuscan experience is ordinary. For luxury travelers, there’s good and then there’s the best. This summer, Social Life sought out the most exclusive properties for the private, elite traveler, and our, um, research turned up two options for exclusivity and opulence.

VITIGLIANO TUSCAN RELAIS VITIGLIANO.COM Tucked away, but impossible to miss, Vitigliano Tuscan Relais is one of the most exclusive country estates in Tuscany, and is within the former Roman hamlet of Vitigliano. The property, which dates to 1085 (and is the former home of the renowned Verrazano family) has a second-to-none location in the Chianti region, halfway between Florence and Siena, with a unique hilltop setting that offers a breathtaking, unobstructed 360 degree vista. A local said it best: “Somehow, one feels closer to God here than in any other place of the world.” We couldn’t agree more. And, like your visit to a confessional, privacy is key: Vitigliano Tuscan Relais opens its doors to

only 14 guests at a time. Perhaps it’s this level of attention that has garnered the property accolades, such as the 2016 Hideaway of the Year Worldwide, by Hideaways; 2106 Best Luxury Country Hotel Worldwide, by World Luxury Hotel Awards; and the New York Times was prompted to declare it a “European Top Destination,” in 2015. The location within a location is a veritable Eden surrounded by tranquil olive groves and oak forests, and landscaping that includes a chapel forecourt, a patio, separate terraces for sunrise and sunset, a yoga plateau, and, last but certainly not least, a regal pool with sensational daybeds. Vitigliano’s buildings are works of art, having recently undergone state-of-the-art renovations. While our advice is to do your best to enjoy this jewel as a duo, it is also well appointed for an event, whether a week away with besties or a high-class destination wedding with the one. At Vitigliano, it’s in the details: Don’t miss the parquet flooring handcrafted from old wine barrels. These red wine stains are here to stay . . . and welcome. Each lavish suite features a picture-book view and luxurious appointments, including an open fireplace or bio-ethanol fireplace, local fabrics designed by Tricia Guild and Kenzo, and antique Persian rugs from the owner-family’s own priceless collection. Borgo Pignano

Exposed natural stone walls and Serena stone edging help maintain an inviting climate. Our favorite? Suite Torre, which spans two stories in the Tower Villa. Migrate to the spa for an exquisite experience. From treatments to pools to fitness, there is something for everyone. This is Italy, so food and wine are essential to any experience. You won’t want to leave Vitigliano. From a gourmet breakfast to a four-course dinner, each meal is lovingly crafted from local, sustainable ingredients. Do not miss a tasting. The owners boast exclusive relationships with two blockbusters: Tommaso Cavalli, the son of the fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, and Laura Brunelli, the wife of the deceased Gianni Brunelli and the founder and owner of the famous Osteria Le Logge restaurant in Siena as well as the Brunello vineyard in Montalcino.

BORGO PIGNANO BORGOPIGNANO.COM Just as lavish, and some might argue more so, Borgo Pignano is the very definition of distinctive. Just a short drive from the storied villages of Volterra and San Gimignano, and within easy reach of Florence, Siena, and the vineyards of Chianti, Borgo Pignano sits in the center of a bucolic 750-acre historic and organic estate. Centered around a magnificent, luxury 18th-century villa, the meticulously restored and privately owned Borgo, with its many options for lodging, offers both hospitality, gracious elegance, and some of most commanding views in Tuscany, stretching to the Mediterranean. While some guests to Borgo Pignano will be seduced by the serenity of the estate and stay put for swimming in the infinity pool, soaking up Tuscan sun (and wine), painting or reading, or strolling among the orchards, gardens, and woodland paths, those with wanderlust will be right at home, too. Activities like yoga, horseback riding, biking, or wine tasting can all be launched from this paradise. SocialLifeMagazine.com

A new and luxurious spa and wellness center features a trained herbalist who uses local flowers, herbs, plant extracts, oils, and honeys to promote a sense of well-being and relaxation. Borgo Pignano has a number of rooms in the main house; while we recommend the deliciously private La Canonica, a 13th-century former rectory with three bedrooms, any room will charm and pamper you. For something a tad smaller than La Canonica, go with The Music Room, one of the villa’s largest rooms, with high ceilings and Gothic-style windows overlooking the sweeping landscape. This spacious luxury suite features a four-poster bed, private sitting area, working fireplace, and grand piano. Unique to Borgo Pignano is an extensive collection of maisonettes and cottages, perfect for those who want even more space or for those seeking lots of room to house visitors for an event on the premises. For grandness, try Farmhouse la Fonte, which sleeps 24 and is surrounded by Mediterranean aromatic gardens, orchards, and fields and sits beside one of the estate’s natural lakes. La Piccionaia is more standard, sleeping four, but no less charming. It contains a first-floor living and dining room, fully equipped kitchen, and bathroom. The second floor has a large en-suite master bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a loft with tatamis, a single bedroom, and a charming pocket balcony. You will want to eat at either Villa Pignano Restaurant, Restaurant Al Fresco, or Kitchen Garden. Clean is the operative word, with many foodstuffs gathered from the property’s large vegetable garden and organic farm. From the flour they grind to sensational, organic honey from onsite beehives to Pignano’s free-range pigs and hens, each homegrown ingredient is chosen when at its most delicious. From lazy breakfasts to gourmet dinners to any number of activities, at Pignano you will enjoy an elegant and inspired setting.

THE SAFARI COLLECTION THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME By Lizabeth Zindel

Giraffe Manor

I

f you’ve been dreaming of a trip to Africa, The Safari Collection will create the adventure of a lifetime. Founded by Tanya and Mikey Carr-Hartley, in 2009, the company owns a portfolio of four luxury boutique camps and lodges in the finest locations in Kenya. They organize every detail of your safari, from perfect accommodations to added experiences like hot air balloon rides and camel trekking. They also coordinate all private transfers by land and air, working closely with Safarilink, Kenya’s premier safari airline (flysafarilink.com). In June, we had the thrilling chance to visit two of their breathtaking properties.

GIRAFFE MANOR Our trip began at The Safari Collection’s Giraffe Manor, a 10-room ivy-covered lodge on the outskirts of Nairobi, where guests enjoy breakfast and afternoon tea with the herd of resident Rothschild giraffes. The hotel blends the captivating beauty of a 1930s Scottish hunting lodge with the uplifting experience of interacting with these beautiful creatures. Our elegant room in the new wing of the Garden Manor featured delightful details like herringbone wood floors, a stained glass window with a giraffe motif, and a private entrance with outdoor seating.

For lunch, we dined in the enchanting courtyard decorated with lily ponds, palm trees, and sculptures of giraffes. Our gourmet three-course meal was gorgeously presented. The lime and cream cheese sorbet floating within a glass bowl filled with rose petals and ice mirrored the hotel’s whimsical essence. In the afternoon, we visited the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. At the core of the trust’s work is the Orphans’ Project, which rescues milk-dependent elephants and cares for them until they’re ready for a return to the wild. During the visit, I adopted the elephant Enkesha, a symbol of strength despite the dangers of poaching. For more information on fostering elephants, visit dswt.org/foster. Upon returning to the gorgeous manor, we enjoyed afternoon tea with the giraffes, followed by a delicious dinner in a romantic, wood-paneled dining room illuminated only by candles. In the morning, I opened my door to discover giraffes patiently waiting near the courtyard for their morning treats. Over sips of coffee and bites of scrambled eggs, we fed the adult and baby giraffes as they craned their necks through the open windows. It was a breakfast like no other, at one of the most magical hotels in the world. Social Life

T R AV E L SALA’S CAMP Our next stop was Sala’s Camp, The Safari Collection’s sensational property in the Maasai Mara. Facing Tanzania and the Northern Corridor, the camp’s prized location offers front row seats to the annual wildebeest migration. The Mara also contains a year-round concentration of the “Big Five” and 450 bird species. We took a 55-minute flight from Giraffe Manor to the Mara on Safarilink. The excellent airline is the No. 1 regional carrier in Kenya and highly recommended. Safari planes prefer soft-sided luggage, and we found wonderful duffles by Filson (filson.com). Made with rugged twill and bridle leather, their timelessness and durability were perfect for a voyage to East Africa, where classic safari was born. The seven, luxury tented-suites at Sala’s Camp combine safari style from bygone days with understated luxury — always maintaining a connection to nature. We loved sleeping in the comfort of our beds while listening to the wild sounds of the Mara at night. The property’s gracious managers, Hattie and Henry Ramsen, welcomed us and informed us about The Safari Collection’s impressive sustainability projects, which protect Kenya’s wilderness and provide health and education programs to local communities. As Sala’s Camp resides on a private concession, we were permitted to venture off-road during game drives, getting impressively close to animals. Dan, our guide, and Mrefu, our spotter, shared a passion and knowledge for the Mara that enriched our experience. One day as we set out early in the Land Cruiser, Dan pointed out lion tracks. “Looking at fresh paw prints in the morning is like reading breaking news. It tells you who came to camp while we were in slumberland,” he said. We followed the tracks, looking for Sala’s pride, a group of more than fifteen lions that roam near the Sand River.

In addition to tracking lions, we savored breakfasts on the savanna, drank sundowners while the red orb slipped below the horizon, and danced with local Maasai villagers. One evening, Sala’s Camp’s caring staff surprised us with dinner in the dry banks of the Sand River. Lit by a bonfire, candles, and endless stars, it was one of the most sensational dinners of our lives. The night reminded me of a line from a letter that Karen Blixen (aka Isak Dinesen, the author of Out of Africa) sent to her mother. She wrote, “Sitting [by a safari campfire] listening to the lions far out in the darkness was like returning to the really true world again — where I probably once lived 10,000 years ago.” We treasure the moments spent with The Safari Collection and dream of the day when we return to see our new friends — both human and animal. We also hope to explore The Safari Collection’s two additional properties in Kenya — Sasaab, a Moroccan-styled lodge near Samburu National Park, with spacious suites that have their own private plunge pools, camel trekking, and excellent game viewing as well as the intimate Solio, the only guest accommodation on the incredible 45,000-acre Solio Game Reserve, the most successful private rhino-breeding reserve in Kenya. A DAY IN THE SOCIAL LIFE

RETURN TO MONTAUK, AMAGANSETT, AND BRIDGEHAMPTON By Karen Holly Berliner ontauk has become a destination greatly deserving of a return trip, particularly this season. The East End has been resplendent, with long days of blue skies, white-capped waters, and social and cultural happenings. So much to see, do, and explore. We start off at the Red Hook Lobster Pound, named after its original location in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This local spot with picnic-style dining serves a range of lobster rolls, including a classic Maine lobster roll and an non-classic Tuscan roll. It also serves salads, chowders, seafood entrees, and landlubber dishes. The Red Hook Lobster Pound sells local Sweet’tauk lemonade, which is like tasting Montauk and New England combined. We spend the day walking about town and shopping for some Hamptons-centric items and taking in the fresh air. For lunch, we dine at Swallow East Restaurant. Its New American menu, packed with small plates, include Angus sliders with tomato jam; Montauk chowder with local little neck clams, tomato, cream, and bacon; and many more choices for all palates. We note that great local bands, such as Booga Sugar and Strange Majik, are lined up each night for the remainder of the summer. Perhaps yet another return visit this season?

Swallow East Restaurant

Red Hook Lobster Pound

M

We stay in Montauk overnight, prepare to depart, and stop off for an early lunch at The Gig Shack, a chic café with an international twist. The Gig Shack also features live music on most nights, fresh, local ingredients, homemade baked goods, and inventive dishes. We made a perfect choice. We enjoy the petits croissants — one with hand sliced jamón, serrano, provolone, and baby arugula; the other with house-made lobster salad. We select from the extensive wine, beer, and spirit list, featuring local producers as wells as its own label, Montauk Hard Label. We notice a calendar filled with live music events, a perfect musical pairing to great food and drink. Wending our way back toward Bridgehampton, we reach Amagansett (the Native American word for “place of good water”), a hamlet of East Hampton with a small Main Street lined with restaurants and boutiques. Indian Wells Beach here is great for a day out. Part of the beach is the ecological reserve, the Nature Conservatory Atlantic Double Dunes, preserving beaches while still allowing for the not-so-serious joys of frolicking in the waves. Tonight, we will sleep at the Gansett Green Manor, a quaint country inn, complete with private entrances, patios, and sitting areas. Each studio, suite, and cottage has its own decor. Set on two acres of beautifully manicured lawns edged in mature trees, and surrounded by historic farmlands, the inn offers private patios with sunbeds, hammocks, and picnic tables for true serenity and a break from the clamor. The Gig Shack, and Tony Meatball

We plop our things down, switch gears, and head off to the Clam Bar at Napeague for a bite to eat. A classic seaside snack bar awaits us. We enjoy a plate of tuna bits, a dozen clams, and local oysters on the half shell. We also choose a few dishes from the specials board, which reflects what is coming off the boats that very day. The next and last stop this round is the village of Bridgehampton, which offers fine restaurants, wineries, the most beautiful horse farms in the region, a vibrant main street, clean beaches, and art and equestrian events. The first order of business for us is Mecox Beach — and what a picture perfect beach it is. A bona fide member of the exclusive Hamptons beach scene, it’s popular with celebrities. Look for the volleyball set-up on a dedicated court that invites an impromptu pickup game. Food is also available here should you crave an après game snack. Add sunset gazing, fishing, and surfing and the day is full. Craving a quiet and quaint setting in keeping with this region’s charm, we lodge at The Bridgehampton Inn, steps from charming antique shops and first-rate dining. Best of all, it’s only a quick bike ride to the beach. The historic inn is operated by the same family that owns the Loaves & Fishes food shop

in Sagaponack, and it runs the Loaves & Fishes Cook Shop, which offers professional cooking classes at the inn. Beautiful antique dressers and mirrors decorate the rooms, many of which have four-poster beds. The sumptuous English breakfast, served in the dining room or on the veranda, is one of the biggest treats here. For something a little different today in the way of a dining treat, we visit Tony Meatball. Mark D’Andrea opened this Bridgehampton counter-style spot last season, serving a basic menu of classic meatballs, made with high-end, dry-aged and grass-fed beef, veal, and pork. He also makes skinny meatballs made with chicken and beef and glutenfree meatballs. All three options are served with homemade tomato sauce and pasta or a salad, or as a sandwich. The meatballs are a hit, and we buy some to go! After enjoying a stroll through the town, at night we are in the mood for a lovely dinner. The renowned Almond is a good choice. This restaurant seats 120 with a large indoor space and a few sidewalk tables. Enjoy the ambiance The ceilings are lined in 100-year-old tin, the bar is hand-carved, one wall is white subway tile, and one wall features zebra-patterned wallpaper. Social Life

We note that Almond has announced a new chef de cuisine, Jeremy Blutstein. Formerly of East by Northeast in Montauk, Blutstein has joined Jason Weiner, the executive chef. We savor a plate of the traditional escargot Pernod with garlic croutons. The menu is eclectic and gourmet, with dishes that range from seafood entrees to Korean BBQ. We hear that some of the celebrities who have dined at Almond included Bill Clinton, Usher, Joy Behar, Kelsey Grammer, Nathan Lane, Keith Hernandez, Bernadette Peters, Kim Cattrall, and Rihanna. Our very last stop is Channing Daughters Winery, 25 sprawling acres of vines, a small winery, and a tasting room featuring wines created from both special white and red varieties. By chance we come upon an extra bonus hidden among the vineyards: One Ocean Yoga, a tent that easily transforms into a beautiful yoga refuge. All levels are welcome for group and private yoga classes, meditation sessions, healing sessions, concerts, workshops, and special events like the Waves – 5Rhythms movement meditation practice, on Saturday, Aug 19, from 7 pm to 9 pm. We plan on coming back for this, so we can end another perfect visit with a blissful yoga experience! Social Life

Sparkling Raspberry Lemonade Ingredients: 1½ cups sugar 2 ½ cups water 1 ¼ cups fresh lemon juice (about 6 lemons) 2 cups raspberries, pureed 3 ½ cups cold sparkling water Ice cubes Directions: Combine sugar and water in a small sauce pan and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat and stir so that sugar dissolves completely. Let cool to room temperature. Puree raspberries in a food processor until smooth. To puree by hand, squeeze raspberries in a zip-lock bag, after removing as much air as possible. (This method will create a more rustic look, resulting in larger pieces of raspberry.) Pour pureed raspberries and lemon juice into the cooled sugar water and stir well. Combine raspberry mixture and cold sparkling water in a large pitcher. Stir well and add lots of ice. Serve in a clear glass, with thin lemon slices and whole raspberries.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S COCKTAIL By Sharon Roth

W

ith the midpoint of summer already upon us — and happy gatherings in full swing and swag from sunrise to sunrise, from galas under the stars to barefoot in the surf — it’s high time to sample and share our most definitional summer cocktail inspirations from the Hamptons and beyond. Our first pick? A St. Barth-inspired delight discovered and imported by our Pierre (of famed and beloved internationally flavored hotspot Pierre’s of Bridgehampton), who happened on the whimsical drink on a recent trip and thankfully brought it home to us. We can’t say enough about either the name or the concept: Passion in the Tub is a delightfully frothy, surprising creation served in a miniature ceramic bathtub, garnished by a tiny floating rubber duckie that actually squeaks (tip: duckie is not edible). Beautifully crafted with 3 oz Tito’s vodka, 1 oz passion fruit juice, ½ oz St. Germaine, and topped with a mound of lychee foam designed to resemble bath bubbles, it also happens to be delicious . . .and just plain fun to drink with friends. For poolside chic, there is no better than Manhattan’s Bar d’Eau at the Trump Soho, where hotel guests and visitors alike can lounge around the rooftop pool, savoring snacks and summery cocktails. Not to be missed is the Spicy Watermelon, a jewel-toned amber treat that packs a definite punch despite its light, tantalizingly cool flavor. To make, combine one scoop of

fresh watermelon (use an ice cream scoop), 2 oz silver tequila of choice, ¾ oz peach liqueur infused with jalapeno (You can substitute Saint Germain or Cointreau for subtle variations), and ¾ oz freshly squeezed lime juice. For the jalapeno-infused liqueur, halve three jalapenos (with seeds), place in a plastic container, pour in an entire bottle of peach liqueur (Saint Germain or Cointreau), and seal. Let sit for one hour; the longer it’s infused, the spicier it will be, but one hour should yield the perfect heat. Put all ingredients into a shaker and muddle the watermelon for 10 seconds Add ice and shake vigorously for another 10 seconds, strain over more ice in a glass, and enjoy! For added flair, line the rim with chili lime salt. And as we wing our way to the West Coast, the ultimate California summer spot is The Deck on Laguna Beach, a chill beachside terrace mecca overlooking the aqua Pacific, where lucky guests can enjoy fabulous music, food, and drinks while greeting dolphins and fiery sunsets. The signature pre- and après-beach libation is aptly named the California Cooler, a spicy refresher that is a simple party-friendly mix of 2 oz gin, 1 oz lime sour, and a splash of ginger beer. Add cucumber, jalapeno pepper, and mint to taste.

Happy midsummer 2017 to all. Drink up!! Social Life

SPLASH MIXERS SIMPLIFY THE PERFECT SUMMER COCKTAIL By Lizabeth Zindel e absolutely love Splash mixers because not only do they taste amazing, but they are also health- and ecoconscious. Founded by Maria Baum and Hilary Pereira, the all-women company crafts mixers that are natural, gluten free, vegan, low calorie (20!), kosher-certified, very low in salt and sugar, and non-GMO. They make it their mission to use only the highest quality flavors and even use an eco-friendly paint to frost their stylish bottles. This summer, you may have seen the blue Splash Bar Car cruising around the Hamptons. Driven by “Splashologists,” the vintage 1957 BMW Isetta, with a customized bar trolley, is making an appearance at tons of Hamptons events. Celebs have also rented it for a private party experience. Born in Sag Harbor, raised in New York City, the mixers make it super simple to throw a party and serve an elevated cocktail. “We designed it to be the easiest cocktails. One part splash, one part spirit,” Pereira says. She worked for two years on perfecting the flavors before the official launch last summer in Sag Harbor. The Splash co-founder wanted the mixers to be a healthy alternative that didn’t taste fake or like chemicals — and she has succeeded. “I go to farmers markets or specialty stores and hand choose the ingredients. I test them in the kitchen and then bring a sample to our beverage lab. My sample is what the beverage lab uses as its gold standard,” Pereira says. She is most proud of the margarita flavor. “I really think we nailed it. There are other mixers out there, but they have a pucker taste or a non-authentic green color.” In June, Splash released a signature cocktail for Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing series. It’s two ounces of Splash cosmopolitan with a scoop of Rosé wine gelato, and topped with Rosé wine. “On a hot night, this cocktail is so appealing. It’s this beautiful pink color and looks so elegant,” Pereira says. Splash also created three signature cocktails for the NY Yankees. The Grand Slam, Triple Play, and Big Apple are served in a Yankee-branded cup that doubles as a souvenir cocktail shaker. Splash’s five core flavors are Bay St. ginger, margarita, Moscow mule, mojito, and cosmopolitan. Twenty additional flavors are already created, but yet to be released, including spicy margarita, Bloody Mary, negroni, old fashioned, and grilled pineapple. The delightful mixers can also be used for cooking. At an event at the Bronx Zoo, the chefs cooked white fish, using Splash Bay St. ginger as a marinade and prepared steak with a

BEST EATS IN THE HAMPTONS PIERRE’S MARKET & RESTAURANT IN BRIDGEHAMPTON By Blaire Bass

t’s a little bit of Paris in the Hamptons. Pierre Weber, a fifth-generation baker, has shared his culinary delights with Hamptonites and summer visitors since 2002, and the food just keeps getting better and better. Nestled on Main Street in Bridgehampton, Pierre’s Gourmet Market & Restaurant strikes the perfect balance between a trendy, see-and-be-seen scene and a cozy, feel-like-home environment. You can dress up or dress down, and no matter what the occasion, you will always be blown away by the quality and innovation of the French-inspired food.

BEST BRUNCH IN TOWN Looking for a savory Sunday brunch spot? Sip on Pierre’s magical mimosa, and devour the lobster salad with fresh tarragon and Pierre’s special Cognac dressing. Or keep it simple and clean with a homemade organic smoothie. Our favorite is the tropi-kale, made with coconut milk, fresh mango, pineapple, and kale. SocialLifeMagazine.com

QUICK BUT QUALITY NIBBLES AT PIERRE’S MARKET Need to grab a snack before jumping on the Jitney? Greek yogurt, illy coffee, out-of-this-world pastries, sandwiches, homemade ice-cream, salads — this is where you should stop when you’re in a rush and want a quality bite. Pierre is always looking for ways to bring the best experience possible to customers. He loves what does. He’s passionate about food, and he loves the charming essence of the Hamptons. These attributes come through in his food. It’s simply exquisite. Eve Xanthopoulos always had a passion for art and completed a coveted internship at the Marian Goodman Gallery. Aside from working closely as a business manager for legendary artist Chuck Close, Eve spends her time as an author, philanthropist, art advisor, and entrepreneur. Her range of interests extend across continents and issues, including health, the arts, the environment, and children.

THE OAKES TWINS By Anastasiya Siro

T

he Oakes twins (Ryan and Trevor), who draw and paint on curved canvases, are known for making art that explores the nuances of human perception. They invented a new way of transcribing visual space, by hand, onto a spherical imaging surface that The New York Times called “one of the most intriguing breakthroughs in the rendering of physical reality since the Renaissance.” This summer, they’re making a series of plein air oil paintings of the ocean horizon line in Southampton, stationed on the beach, using their signature concave easel, an apparatus for which they were awarded a patent. The flat horizon line is a theme the twins have conceptually integrated into their works before, starting with two ocean nightscapes made in Los Angeles, and followed by two daytime paintings of a snow-covered field in North Dakota. They describe the horizon as a spatial “common denominator,” something that exists at the farthest depth, yet has minimal form defining that depth. Instead, it’s the color of the ocean relative to the color of the sky, plus any atmospheric haze that may come into play, that a painter must rely on to render it as far away. After all, the ocean horizon line has no perspectival characteristics that visually push it into the background, the way a road pinching down to a point does. It’s just a flat edge. If represented in a line drawing, it could be simply a straight mark across the page. Social Life



ART

For these reasons, the brothers elected to use the horizon line as their entrée into making color paintings. Ryan elaborates: “Before working in color, we had worked a lot in blackand-white contour line, doing more and more intricate scenes, and we were seeing that the curved drawings could convey a convincingly expansive sense of depth. We wanted to see if we could get the same deep space feeling by using color instead of line, and, furthermore, just color with almost no lines indicating the depth. So we chose a scene that had just that, very few lines and primarily color. The first paintings were the flat ocean horizon in Los Angeles, viewed from the Santa Monica pier, where we stood with the fishermen all night and watched them catch SocialLifeMagazine.com

giant crabs while we painted. We specifically chose to work in the middle of the night when the color was strongly reduced to the darkest end of the spectrum. Then, to balance that out, we flipped to the polar opposite palette and made a couple of extremely bright white paintings of a flat snowy field in North Dakota. That time we were in a migrating bird sanctuary in below-freezing temperatures, perched on a viewing platform with no other human beings in sight. We wanted to make companion horizon-line works that bracketed the color spectrum as a way of asserting our move into that artistic territory by defining its boundaries. Light exists in color and not in line, so using color is ultimately a way of talking about the medium of light.”



ART

I caught up with the brothers to see how the paintings are coming along. Trevor shared, “A couple of things have changed in this phase two of our color paintings. Like the previous pieces, we’re working on a primed aluminum substrate, as it’s a surface that can stand up to rain and weather, but this time we’ve laminated linen fabric onto the aluminum to make the adhesion of the oil paint more durable.” On a more general note, gesturing toward his eyes and the distant horizon, Ryan added, “To us humans, who have seen with two eyes, separated horizontally, aimed forward, for all time periods across all cultures and all verbal languages, the language

of looking is a commonality. It unites and transcends the differences of dialects; one doesn’t have to speak Italian to appreciate an Italian Renaissance fresco. Horizontality is major. Trevor and I think it’s one root to the 90-degree grid, which is itself a form that underpins much of man-made progress and ideas. Our minds love grids; they are so logical. The drafting board, where dreams dreamt are plotted, is a grid. Cities are laid out in grids; buildings are comprised of grids; rooms are rectangular; walls are rectangular; even canvases for the most part are rectangular. The grid hits home, and the horizon line could be one place that it derives from. Social Life

ART

Even when we consider our verbal language, the implications of the horizon line crop up with an air of resolve. Things are on the level. Make sure you’re thinking straight. I’ll tell you flat out. Let’s square-up our differences.” This month on the East End, the Oakes twins’ work can be viewed at The Watermill Center’s benefit silent auction, (July 29, 39 Water Mill Towd Road). In the fall, their works are the subject of a solo exhibition at Ronald Feldman Fine Art in SoHo (31 Mercer Street).

TONI ROSS CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST By Eve Xanthopoulos When did you start realizing you wanted to become an artist? I’ve always known I wanted to make things. I have taken many paths to get there, and I’ve faced a few obstacles along the way. I remember I wanted to be an artist or a dancer. Growing up in New York City, my bedroom overlooked the Sculpture Center, then located on East 69th Street. My grandfather enrolled me in classes there. I was the only teenager there. Everyone else being in their fifties and sixties, so I had a lot of mentors from very generous artists. Then, I spent a summer just outside of Paris living with a French family. I took myself to museums every few days. When I saw Degas’s bronze Little Dancer of Fourteen Years with the tulle tutu and silk hair ribbon, I was transformed. I only recently made the connection to that hair ribbon, and I string a tie around many of my sculptures. There is something poetic about the seeming gentleness of the string and the strength of the bronze. What was it like attending Wesleyan University? While at Wesleyan University, I worked a lot with clay, but ultimately became a film major. Wesleyan’s heterogeneous student body as well as a strong commitment to fine and visual arts was exactly what I was looking for in a school Wesleyan was, and remains, a place that challenges its students to be more of who they are, amidst a very rigorous intellectual environment. What was your experience like in Italy after you graduated? In around 1984, after a year of living in East Hampton, while being mentored by Elaine de Kooning, I felt drawn to Italy to experience the works of Titian, Carravaggio, Bernini, etcetera, and to learn the language. A three-week trip turned into a oneyear stay, after having visited the marble quarries in Carrara. I met a group of artists in the quarry, visited their studios, and ended up marrying one of them, and had two children after moving to New York. The quarries had a big impact on my sense of space and landscape, and it was there that I truly began to contemplate rock and other seemingly impenetrable structures and wonder about their interior lives. You have described your art in such a beautiful way: seeking symmetry between the temporal and the timeless. How so? I am fascinated by the past. Particularly the long ago past.

I often imagine what might have taken place in a certain location, or how vessels were used, and what kinds of activities really took place. We can only surmise. In the remains of those activities I feel a sense of permanence. A kind of continuum from past to present. I have come to believe in a certain kind of collective consciousness as my work echoes forms of times long past, inspite of the fact that I may never have seen these forms before my own making. Talk more about how you seek a kind of mystery in your sculptures with expressionism and transience. My sculpture asks questions about what is, or was, inside. Sometimes I create openings in the work that allow the viewer to see inside but only just enough to become more curious. Social Life



ART

It is the yin yang of how much one wants to be known and how much one wants to remain private. Tell me about the installation you’re working on now. In my latest installation at Longhouse Reserve, Jack Lenor Larsen asked me to make a piece one could go inside of, so I made several of the pieces accessible to visitors, but the openings are such that you have to make a decision to go inside rather than simply wander in. There are so many exciting things about this installation. One of the goals in creating this piece was to change the viewers’ relationship to three statuesque trees near the pond. I wanted to bring the majesty, age, and grandeur of the trees into high relief by changing one’s sense of scale and distance to them. It is a powerful experience being inside of these constructions that envelop the trees, more powerful than I had originally imagined. Additionally, in choosing hemp twine as the predominant material, I had no idea how alive the twine actually was. It lives and breathes and changes with the time of day, the heat and humidity. For me, this is very exciting. What about The Hayground School? It’s so wonderful that you are a part of this. I am a co-founder of The Hayground School in Bridgehampton. I am extremely proud of my participation there, where I remain an active member of the board of trustees. We are now in our 21st year of providing students with an extraordinary environment in which to learn about themselves and the world around them. Hayground is a school that places SocialLifeMagazine.com

teachers at the forefront of decision-making, places art and science at its core, and provides a mentor-apprentice model of education. I am prouder still that Hayground remains dedicated to being both a multi-cultural and socio-economically diverse place. BRIAN BOWEN SMITH CELEBRITY, COMMERCIAL, AND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER By Eve Xanthopoulos

Talk about how you met the iconic American fashion photographer Herb Ritts. I met Herb Ritts on a photo shoot he was shooting for the Gap. He chose me as one of the talents. We became fast friends, then I asked him: ‘Hey, would it be possible to ever come to one of your shoots?’ He said, ‘sure,’ and that’s how it all began. My love for photography was on its way to a blossoming relationship. Your career spans editorial, advertising, fashion, and entertainment photography. What do you love most about being able to create such a vast range of work? Do you come across any challenges? I love that I can be a versatile photographer. My attention span is very very small, so I need to be able to express myself in different ways. Being able to do advertising work, entertain-

ment work, and fine art work allows me to really expand my horizons and be super creative. I also like working with art directors and big advertisers and helping them bring their vision to life. I think every job that I do has a certain amount of challenges. I welcome them, and I am continuing to learn every day. I don’t think you’re ever where you want to be. And for me that’s a good thing. You are known for your portraits of celebrities featured on the covers of magazines. Is this your favorite kind of work? I love working with celebrities, which is why I zeroed in on the entertainment business. It’s so amazing when you look up to someone as an actor or actress and then get to be faceto-face with them and create something that they love. I literally got teary-eyed and felt so proud. That’s what it’s all about for me. Your work has been featured in publications such as Vanity Fair, Esquire, Self, GQ, and Details. What else are you working on now? Any exhibitions coming up? One of my favorite things in the world to do is create fine art photography. One of my dreams when I started was to have a book one day. I have two published books at the moment and have done four gallery shows. I never thought I’d be sitting here with that on my bill already, when I feel like SocialLifeMagazine.com

I’ve just begun. I am currently working on a new show called Peep Show. The show will be on October 11 at the Rave Gallery. The show is nothing like what I’ve done in the past. I’m super excited about putting this together. It started with a slew of dreams that I’ve had, and finally kept a pen and pad next to my bed and started writing things down. It’s amazing to see what I wrote when I wake up. I love fine art photography because there are no boundaries, no mistakes. It’s just you and a subject and then whatever happens. Sometimes it’s planned out; sometimes it’s sporadic. My favorite is when things happen in the spur of the moment. The less I think about things, the better with me. I am truly blessed to be able to make a living and do what I do. I’m just going to keep riding this wave. Hopefully I’ll stay deep in the barrel for a long time. bowensmith.com

EDDIE BURKE JR . RENAISSANCE MAN IN THE HAMPTONS EVENTS PERMITS, REAL ESTATE, DWI REPRESENTATION, AND MORE By Cecilia Boon

I

ts multi-acre estates, beachside properties, and luxury accommodations make the Hamptons a veritable party paradise, with much of its famed reputation as a summer destination owing to how often it’s been the setting of the social events of the season. But what really makes a Hamptons party on your calendar possible is a single piece of coveted paper known as a special events permit. So while raising a glass to toast the host is customary, we forget that any grand celebration must first be permitted to happen at all. And we know the man who really gets the parties started: Edward Burke Jr. The East End, where Edward Burke Jr. both lives and bases his law practice, Edward Burke Jr. & Associates, has seen an explosive growth in parties throughout the townships in the Hamptons. Burke says, “During the summer, our case volume triples.” His Sag Harbor office handles dozens of special events permits. He has also carved out a thriving criminal defense practice focused on various cases, including DWIs, covering the multiple justice courts. The exponential growth in business led to the hiring of Attorney Melissa Aguanno, who has recently joined as an associate for the firm, assisting in its criminal defense department. Aguanno brings solid experience, hailing from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Burke’s law firm has always handled real estate cases and it was a natural extension for him to introduce his new real estate brokerage business called Burkeshire Realty, which has already seen tremendous growth in its client base. His desire is to cater to his clients not only in a legal capacity but also to explore and seek out incredible real estate properties in the Hamptons for his exclusive (and very private) clientele. Something must have been in the water (of the Long Island Sound) because his entire family practices law. Edward and his siblings, Denise and Joseph, followed in their father’s legal footpath and are all practicing attorneys. Edward Sr. who is a recently retired judge from the Southampton Town bench, heads up the law firm of Burke & Sullivan in Southampton, and the family

enjoys the reputation of being a legal dynasty on the East End. Outside of their stellar legal renown, the Burke family opened up a restaurant called the Salty Dog in Sag Habor in the early 1970s. They retired the restaurant in the early 2000s and then developed the land and property into a condo complex overlooking Noyac Bay. The restaurant business has not entirely escaped Burke, however, as years ago he opened Jeff and Eddy’s Seafood in Sag Harbor and now enjoys acting as a landlord to the famed LT Burger with celebrity chef Laurent Tourondel. edwardburkejr.com 631.725.3131 Social Life

ELISA DISTEFANO LONG ISLAND’S FAVORITE ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER By Christine Montanti

E

lisa Distefano is a groundbreaking entertainment journalist who charms her TV audience with her larger than life persona and enormous range of talent. Known for anchoring News12 Long Island’s morning show, the vibrant newscaster provides millions of viewers with up to the minute traffic reports and breaking entertainment news live from the network’s studio. Elisa’s diverse position at the Woodbury station enables her to simultaneously host and produce a variety of feature segments which are taped daily on location. When Elisa is not working for the cable station, she can be found writing and blogging for websites and numerous Long Island publications. Aside from Elisa’s amazing journalistic achievements, she is also a devoted wife, a new mom, and a promising entrepreneur. In 2014, Elisa married Mo Cassara, an on-air college basketball commentator for ESPN and CBS Sports, and together they have a 10 month old son, Christian Thomas. The dynamic duo not only shares the same strong work ethic and love for broadcasting, but they also enjoy working together outside of their roles in the media. They own two restaurants located in Point Lookout-The Point Ale House which is a community bar and grill, and Mo’Nelisa an Italian family style eatery that caters to the local residents. Elisa’s passion for her broadcasting work at News12 Long Island is demonstrated through her boundless enthusiasm apparent onair every day. In fact, nothing seems to interfere with her performance and effort, not even lack of sleep. Elisa says she manages to function with very little rest caused by sleepless nights caring for her baby and early mornings waking up for work. “My son is teething so I use the term sleeping loosely,” Elisa explains laughing. “I don’t know if I actually sleep. I just take little naps. I get up at 2:00 AM and I arrive at work at 3:30 AM. Once I get to work I immediately begin editing or writing scripts. We are on the air from 5:00 to 9:00 AM, and after the live show I usually tape packages until 9:30 AM.” As soon as Elisa finishes broadcasting in the studio, she hits the road with her camera crew and appears virtually anywhere and everywhere taping feature segments on countless topics from food to fashion. Elisa tapes on location all over Long Island and New York City interviewing A-list celebrities from red carpets at the most prestigious movie premieres and concerts in Manhattan, to society’s most influential celebrity hosted events in the Hamptons. “The toughest part of my day is getting to work and getting on-air. Once the show goes live then it is easy. People often ask me when I’ll be finished with work, and I say when my work is finished.” SocialLifeMagazine.com

Although Elisa spends much of her time outside of News 12 Long Island supervising her two restaurants and contributing feature editorials to various publications, she still manages to volunteer time to numerous causes including her own charity event, the Sneakers and Sandals Ball. Proceeds from the event go to Long Island Cares, an organization which provides emergency food relief for Long Island. Maria Ellis, Nick Jonas

he Long Island singer and songwriter Maria Ellis has performed at NYC’s Bitter End and The Cutting Room. She’s opened for rocker Rick Derringer and has sung at the “Save the Bay” concert in the Hamptons. Ellis was surrounded by pop music throughout her childhood. “My parents would always be blasting U2 and other bands from the ’80s in the house. My dad was obsessed with the Beatles. My childhood revolved around music.” Her parents’ love of pop music influenced her at a young age and they encouraged her to write down melodies from the time she was six, the year she began piano lessons. LADY GAGA, BONO & CHRISTINA AGUILERA The now nineteen-year-old remembers taking classical piano lessons, but they weren’t working out for her. “I would start to drift off, doing my own thing and making my own beat.” At nine, she found an old guitar, and her father taught her three cords. She then took to the Internet to teach herself everything she could, and she eventually mastered both the acoustic and electric guitars. Vocally, Maria’s style is all her own, with a large range thanks to the help of her vocal coach, Don Lawrence, who has coached Lady Gaga, Bono, and Christina Aguilera. Ellis believes her current single, When I’m Leaving You, is the best example of who she is as an artist. “This song isn’t about a specific person or event in my life. But, as a woman growing up, I’ve had times when I walked away from someone, and then he started treating me how he should have been treating me all along. It’s the perfect girl anthem: ‘You only love me when I’m leaving you.’ ” mariaellismusic.com
