PUBLISHER’S LETTER

July Fourth in the Hamptons is the place to be. The unmatched beauty of our beaches and countryside is truly a treasure. Life-changing, I’m convinced. Spend time here, slow things down a little, and detach from social media. You’ll see what I mean. Of the many freedoms July Fourth represents, my favorite is freedom of the press. Let us not forget the importance and the ideals of a free nation, and how we reached where we are today. Freedom impacts our lives every day, and it’s worth protecting. This holiday weekend is a great time to relax and spend time with family and friends. This is the time to build life-long memories with people who mean the most to us and the people who newly come into our lives. The Hamptons offers the perfect setting for celebrating life. Most large events, including charity events have been canceled this summer. Some fundraising galas will be held online. Other non-profits will be reaching out for donations and some will have matching donation programs. The nonprofits and charity causes need your support more than ever, and you can easily donate via their websites. Please consider contributing to the Southampton Hospital. Its services are vital to the Hamptons, for residents and visitors alike. Support is especially critical now because the hospital’s resources have been pushed to the maximum during these past few months. You can learn more about the hospital’s many programs and services and donate via southampton.stonybrookmedicine.edu/ giving Now that the Hamptons stores and restaurants are opening again, please remember small businesses are relying on your help this summer because of the pandemic shut-down. Many local businesses will continue to have restrictions throughout the summer. Instead of buying online, please support the Hamptons community by shopping locally in the small businesses and village shops. As we resume our normal lives, July Fourth offers the ideal time to slow down and enjoy quality time with family and friends. Happy Independence Day!!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

The East End, full of bloom and beauty, has taken on a new feel this summer. Many have created their own social distance groups, a small set of friends who socialize, exercise, barbecue, and social distance together. Others are keeping their social groups smaller by only interacting with close family and not venturing out at all unless they are going to Round Swamp or Citarella to pick up food. Then there are also some who have braved hotspots like Gurney’s in masks or taken their boat to outside deck lunches. What everyone has in common, as they move through the new normal, is a deep feeling of community and unity. This rallying spirit can be seen in the support of local small businesses — many are not just supporting but donating to the shops that they most frequent. Several charities have been happily surprised with the turnout to online galas and events. I think this is a beautiful reflection on the strong morals and cohesiveness of a community. May we all continue to move forward together helping one another. Christie Brinkley and Devorah Rose

LETTER FROM THE SENIOR EDITOR

Christine Montanti, Photography by Don Fitzgibbon

I can’t think of a more spectacular getaway destination than the Hamptons to spend Independence Day. This patriotic holiday is spent by many residents in the privacy of their exclusive country homes or rental properties enjoying the company of family and friends. What better way to relish the pleasures of the picturesque landscape on the East End than with traditional backyard barbecues, picnics, family reunions, and leisure activities? Since the Fourth of July is celebrated over an extended period of two full weeks in the Hamptons, there is plenty of time to enjoy the festivities. Be sure to celebrate this summer kick off week by soaking up the sun on one of the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean beaches covering almost 50 miles from Westhampton to Montauk. Or visit one of the charming villages where you can enjoy outdoor seating at trendy farm-to-table restaurants, each having its own unique personality. Although this holiday celebration may not include our traditional patriotic events, parades, large gatherings and sporting activities, it is still a time to celebrate our nation’s independence and be grateful that we call this amazing country, the United States, our home. Warm Wishes,

This month we celebrate the nation’s legacy, the Fourth of July weekend, in America’s favorite summer location, the Hamptons. As Covid-19 restrictions are slowly being eased, local businesses are reopening under new guidelines requiring owners to adhere to social distancing regulations and to operate under limited capacity. Many of these establishments, especially the celebrated eateries in the quaint villages on the East End, need our understanding as they develop creative and safe ways to handle these challenges. The pandemic has caused substantial financial loss to small business owners and the community’s support is needed now more than ever during this historic holiday.

The Bold Blazer Take the blazer out of the office this summer. Once meant purely for corporate America, the blazer has become synonymous with a cool summer look. Rock it out to dinner this season and style it with jeans as seen at the Givenchy spring /summer 2020 runway show. Or go for a more polished look as seen at Chloé and wear a blazer with a silk blouse and a pair of matching trousers. You can also rock it with shorts as seen on the Tod’s runway. Think outside the box. You really can’t go wrong with a blazer.

JETSETTER STYLE COME UP AND SLOW DOWN IN GSTAAD, SWITZERLAND By Gregory DelliCarpini Jr. Photography by Lorenzo Vinti

Slow travel is the leading trend in the travel industry right now. It’s less about time and more about a frame of mind. You don’t need to clear a month to take part in the slow-travel trend. The joy is in the journey just as much as the destination. It’s about making real connections with people, places, and things. There is no better place to experience slow travel than in Gstaad, Switzerland. In fact, the slogan of this magical city is “Come up, slow down.” You get to experience the slow-travel trend even before arriving to Gstaad. Train travel is a key element of this trend, and no place on earth has better and more beautiful trains than Switzerland. Traveling by Swiss train to Gstaad is an amazing experience. Relax and rejuvenate before you arrive as you appreciate the breathtaking views of the mountains. Named “The Place” by Time magazine in the 1960s when the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton stayed at the posh Gstaad Palace. Gstaad is still an active site for chic snow bunnies and nature lovers. The glitzy après-ski scene and winter sports draw visitors from all over the world. If skiing isn’t for you, there are many

other activities you can take part in. Enjoy countless outdoor spas, a horse-drawn sleigh ride under the stars, or the region’s famous fondues. Among the more unusual activities are Bavarian curling in the center of Gstaad and glacier- and heli-skiing. The charming village is easily recognizable thanks to the Gstaad Palace hotel perched atop a hill. For a more rustic and traditional feel, stay at the Park Gstaad, located in the heart of the village, or the revamped Alpina for a cool modern luxury twist. New to the hotel scene is the Ultima, a charming and modern property that gives a chalet vibe. The Ultima is also just a three-minute walk to a gondola lift and a quick car ride to Mirage, the mirrored-house art installation by the American artist Doug Aitken. If you forgot how to slow down and truly unwind, book your trip now.

oing stir crazy? Me too! One way I’ve whiled away the time is buying just about everything that shows up in my social feed. While I’ve discovered some keepers, there’s also been some big-time busts. My advice? Opt for these keepers.

HoMedics UV-CLEAN Phone Sanitizer $80, homedics.com

The jury is out on whether UV can kill Covid-19, but if this pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that you can’t be too vigilant when it comes to cleanliness. This is by far one of the best on the market, zapping 99.99% of bacteria on anything you can fit in its clenches.

SkinCeuticals Prices vary, skinceuticals.com

This is the workout short of choice all of a sudden. At 7", it also lets you show off those gams you’ve been flexing in the home gym since March.

Every skincare brand and their brother has gone into overdrive with their social marketing during the pandemic. Those Instagram ads have been quite irresistible. What have I learned? Stick with what you know. SkinCeuticals, which typically markets to women, is about as good as it gets. Rooted in real science, this brand takes on a guy’s skin at full throttle. Here’s my routine. 1. Glycolic Renewal Cleanser: Formulated with a high concentration of glycolic acid, this powerhouse promotes cellular turnover, skin clarity, and brightness while leaving skin feeling comfortable and refreshed.

Beer of the Month Club — Amazing Clubs $39.95 and up, amazingclubs.com Well, this is a no brainer. However, not all clubs are created equal. I’ve previously been able to track down some of these brews only by going straight to the source. This brings new meaning to curbside. (While you’re poking around the Amazing Clubs site, don’t skip over the sirloin or bacon clubs!)

2. C E Ferulic Serum: After cleansing, this antioxidant serum goes to work on all that aging with 15% pure L-ascorbic acid, 1% alpha tocopherol, ferulic acid, and vitamins C + E. (yeah, alphabet soup, but it works.) 3. Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2: The only moisturizer you’ll ever need. Designed to restore essential skin lipids, this truly lightweight and fast-absorbing miracle cream will give your skin new life, from texture to appearance. Admit it — the glow matters. And, for the overnight miracle, rub on the Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight. The results will astound you. Social Life

THE MAGICAL MIELE THE ULTIMATE IN LUXURY COFFEE SYSTEMS By Blair Bass

A

s summer renters and owners move into their Hamptons beach homes and prepare for a season of home entertainment, the best in kitchen appliances are at the top of the must-have list — especially now that we are spending more time at home. One applicance that is required for every menu — from breakfast to beach to dinner to dancing — is the coffee machine. Given we’ll likely be skipping the frequent trip to the Golden Pear or Starbucks to avoid the crowds, it’s important to nail down the best machine that makes superb coffee beverages. Social Life editors searched for the best coffee machines on the market — one that makes an unforgettable cup o’ joe and looks gorgeous doing it. Hands down, the winner was Miele. As the brand’s website says, “When all components of a coffee machine synchronize so perfectly with one another that the result is not just a beverage, but instead an exquisite coffee experience, then it’s a Miele.” We couldn’t agree more. In particular, we fell in love with the CM 6350, a countertop coffee system with all the spectacular features that make a delicious cup of brew perfectly easy. It has a built-in cup warmer; two coffees at once at the touch of a button; creamy milk froth for coffee specialties; an insulated thermos to keep your milk at the ideal temperature when preparing lattes, macchiatos, and cappuccinos; digital settings; one touch convenience; and so much more. It also includes a hot waterspout to cater to your guests who prefer tea. Sleek and sassy, it comes in various colors, including obsidian black, lotus white, and graphite gray. And, of course, Miele also has a line of built-in coffee systems that are architectural works of art. We spoke with Jan Heck, the president and CEO of Miele USA, to learn more about why our favorite luxury coffee machines are so fabulous. The Miele brand dates back the 1920s. Can you tell us a little about its history? Miele was founded in 1899 by two families the (Carl) Miele and (Reinhard) Zinkann, whose descendants own the company today. It is now led by the fourth generation — Dr. Markus Miele and Dr. Reinhard Zinkann. The company began by making butter churners, which evolved into laundry washing machines. Today Miele manufactures household appliances for the kitchen, laundry room, and floor-care as well as appliances for commercial operations and medical facilities. The strategic vision is to be the world’s most trusted and desirable premium brand.

Jan Heck

We just love the sleek and chic design of the coffee machines. Can you talk about your design approach? Miele’s appliances are designed with a harmonious look. Each appliance has the ability to pair with the next Miele appliance; therefore, as you move around your kitchen, there is a uniform look. From the shape to the color to the interface, the owner has the option of choosing the color and design of a coffee machine according to personal tastes and preferences. Miele quality is just outstanding. How do Miele products stand apart from the rest? Miele offers products to its customers that set the standards for durability, performance, ease of use, energy efficiency, design, and service. This corresponds to the German guiding principle immer besser (forever better), which the founders Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann printed on their first machines, and which characterizes Miele to this day. It’s a matter of preference and where you have space for the unit — built-in or on the counter. Either way you will get that same great coffee drink. We understand the brand is still family owned. Can you tell us about that? Miele is in its fourth generation of Miele ownership. Currently, Dr. Markus Miele and Dr. Reinhard Zinkann lead Miele from the Gütersloh, Germany, headquarters. IS THAT A PARK AVENUE FACE? A LOOK INTO THE NEW TREND OF THE FORTY-SOMETHING FACELIFT By Stephanie Goldsmith

I

n today’s digitally-dominated world, it’s impossible to avoid countless ageless faces on Instagram, or the seemingly perfect ‘no makeup’ face of top celebrities all over national television. But how do they do it? How does one achieve a naturally beautiful, seemingly ageless face with youthful cheeks and a sharp jawline at forty-five plus? What does it take to look as effortlessly gorgeous as celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, and Gwen Stefani? If you’re guessing that injectables, tightening devices, fitness trainers, and dieticians are the answer, you’ve likely guessed wrong. The answer behind why that A-list celebrity or friend from high school suddenly has a brighter, sharper, and wellrested appearance isn’t necessarily a result of the latest health craze or that month-long vacation in Biarritz. She may have had a forty-something facelift. In an era where cameras are always flashing, and time is money, women (and an increasing number of men) will go to great lengths to keep themselves looking fresh — especially those who hold the bar extremely high. In the never-ending quest for the fountain of youth, the fortysomething facelift is the latest highbrow (ahem, and permanent) solution to looking ageless. And why not? With today’s advanced techniques, ability to skip general anesthesia, and cutting-edge healing therapies, you can trade looking over-filled, puffy, and slightly distorted for a crisp jawline and a trip in the ‘way back machine’ circa 2005. Before and After

your old self can have endless upsides, but there may be one hurdle — the cost. I will not try to fool you, getting a facelift from a world-renowned plastic surgeon can set you back six figures, but like a 401K, an exceptional investment in your forties will pay you dividends for the rest of your life. Today’s world of facial plastic surgery is a sea of names and experts touting one approach or another — the latest, the greatest, the most natural. We have seen and heard it all. But if you really lean in, if you talk to the most discerning clientele from around the world and look at the medical literature, one name keeps coming up from Monaco to New York: Dr. Andrew Jacono. Closing in on 50 years old, Park Avenue-based facial plastic surgeon and author of The Park Avenue Face, Dr. Jacono is at the top of his game. He has an assured and assuring demeanor that is backed by one of the most talented set of hands in the business. With over 20 years of experience, he is the pioneer of the M.A.D.E. (Minimal Access Deep Plane Extended) facelift and his before and afters will blow your mind. He has long left injectables and devices behind. This plastic surgeon is just that, a surgeon who operates five days a week, with a patient list (and waiting list) that most plastic surgeons could only dream of. The secret to his success is his consistently superior outcomes and his ability to customize his approach to each patient. “Aging is a very personal journey,” he stated over the phone while traveling from Manhattan to his home in Southampton (don’t worry, he wasn’t the driver). “There is no perfect age or time to undergo a facelift, as it depends on how much improvement you are looking for given the downtime and costs associated,” he explained. “But more than ever, I’m seeing patients in their late forties with the desire to look ten years their junior for personal or professional reasons.” SocialLifeMagazine.com

Before and After

This made further sense when he said, “You can’t knock more than four years off your appearance with filler. A lot of people will try to make you believe you can.” I’ve heard from multiple sources, including Dr. Jacono, that when you start with fillers in your late thirties or early forties, it can accelerate the aging process because fillers expand the facial tissue. So, as you continue to use them, you’ll have to add more, because the face gets looser. But this, in turn, actually weighs the face down, making it look wider. A facelift can break this downward spiral, pun intended. Dr. Jacono’s advanced facelift technique is not your mother’s ‘SMAS’ facelift that leaves pulled jawlines and flat cheeks. He has pioneered an extended deep plane approach that incorporates the release of ligaments tethering the deep plane layer to achieve tension-free movement so that no tightness can be created by the facelift procedure. In essence, it’s like an ACL repair for your face. Further, it lifts the face vertically against gravity not pulled back to the ears, stretching the corners of the mouth. Dr. Jacono’s approach has a ten-day recovery time with scars so tiny that you can throw your hair into a ponytail with confidence while eliminating the need for recurrent injectable fillers and fat grafting. “What people are beginning to realize is that the younger you are when you receive a facelift, the more natural it will look, and the longer it will last. The facial tissues are stronger and more supportive during youth; therefore, the facelift will hold up better,” concluded Dr. Jacono as he arrived at his house and exited his car. “A facelift in your forties will last twice as long as one performed in your sixties.” Are you ready to embark on your trip back in time? If so, you’ll have to get in line, since this social-distancing summer has got everyone thinking they can easily steal away a ten-day recovery without notice.

ISOLATED IN POSITIVITY By L. A. Dawson

solating alone in a pandemic is not ideal, but what if we could find morsels of positivity within the confines of solitude? Silence is healing, but we humans seem to prefer a constant buzz that tells us we are part of something. If we listen to silence, however, we could become a beacon of change. 2020 is a year so challenging that we are forced to make quick decisions. Jobs are changing or disappearing. Yet career pivots can offer the chance to re-work job descriptions and goals. Although it doesn’t come without stress, re-framing our perspective now can help soften the blow if change comes suddenly. This pandemic could paralyze a person in fear or inspire growth. Entrepreneurs have been flooding e-commerce and virtual marketplace sites with new or improved businesses that will help our economy in the long run. Entrepreneurs’ personal growth is a contribution to a changing world. All of us are given a choice to thrive or simply survive working the same system. It is a year we can choose to see our commonalities as global citizens. Circumstances have knocked us down many times

this year. Do we have the courage to get back up without looking in the rearview mirror? This year is difficult, but lessons abound. What are we learning? Having hope for the future means we trust that the world will survive this pandemic as it historically has survived other extreme challenges. Hope requires constant editing of our thoughts and actions. We must anticipate the possibility of repeated change and must learn composure in the wake of uncertainty. Reading is still safe, learning invites us, virtual exploration is different but available. Life is still beautiful . . . but perspective has shifted. As the world slowly re-opens, we can happily expand our horizons. Climbing mountains both symbolically and physically will be possible. There is much joy amid the changes and choice is paramount. DEALING WITH ANXIETY ORGANICALLY WITHOUT MEDICATION By Liana Werner-Gray

A

nxiety has been intensified for people since the pandemic and other recent events of late. What’s interesting is, certain foods have been proven more effective than medications in alleviating anxiety. Science has shown that foods help reduce anxiety and without the risk of serious side effects. It’s such great news that we can eat ourselves to calm right now! Magnesium plays a major role in relaxing the brain, body, and nervous system and thus reduces anxiety. Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral that is beneficial in the treatment of migraines, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Experts say that up to 75 percent of people in the United States are not meeting their recommended intake of magnesium! Magnesium deficiency has been shown to cause anxiety. You should regularly consume magnesiumrich foods like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, cashews, mung beans, wild rice, almonds, cacao, walnuts, Brazil nuts, chickpeas, lentils, salmon, bananas, avocadoes, and spinach. Cacao is remarkably high in magnesium — 40 times higher than blueberries! Cacao beans are transformed into chocolate and cocoa after fermenting and roasting. Cacao releases feel-good emotions in the body and brain. Cacao improves our mood almost instantly. It is one of the richest sources of flavanol antioxidants on earth! In one study, positive changes in self-reported anxiety and other undesirable emotional and energy states were recorded just after participants consumed chocolate and up to one hour later! What’s stopping us from reaping the benefits of cacao? The problem is that most people think chocolate is unhealthy because they equate it with sweets and believe sweets are bad for us. As a result, they try to suppress their cravings for chocolate. Really, it’s the white sugar that’s added to chocolate bars, which are made with poor-quality dairy and soy lecithin, that are the real health issues with chocolate in our society. Eating high-quality chocolate will heal us and restore us. The neuro-protective effects of cacao and its influence on cognitive performance can be attributed to its effective stimulation of blood flow to the brain.

Its antioxidant molecules, mainly flavonoids like epicatechin (think dark chocolate and green tea) are responsible. Dark chocolate is beneficial to eat on days when you are going to be under stress, such as the day of an exam or presentation, or long day at the office — or even your wedding day. The flavonoids in chocolate induce positive moods. I enjoy cacao every day, whether it’s in one of my homemade cacao recipes or a Hu chocolate bar (no dairy or soy, and sweetened only with coconut sugar). I love dipping it in SunButter for even more magnesium and antioxidants! Such a fulfilling, brain-nourishing snack. Poor gut health is a contributor to anxiety. The gut and brain are interconnected, with some neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, being produced in the intestines. If the gut is not functioning optimally, the body and brain are not properly nourished. An unhappy gut equals an unhappy nervous system and a brain that is not energized. Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria in the human gut that help us absorb vitamins and other nutrients. You naturally get probiotics when you eat fermented foods like pickled vegetables, sauerkraut, and kimchi. Kombucha, miso, tempeh, and sour dough also contain probiotics. I take probiotic supplements, and my favorite brand is Ancient Nutrition. As a supplement that helps the gut function properly, probiotics play a role in protecting us against gut-brain-connected anxiety. I felt better almost immediately after starting to take probiotics, so I know personally they work very well for me. Additionally stop watching fear-based messages on social media and television. Don’t let the media foster fear in you! Turn off the TV and make a nourishing smoothie instead, and go for a bike ride. BESPOKE NON-SURGICAL 3D FACIAL REJUVENATION WITH THE MODERN DAY PICASSO

L

ocated on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Dr. Anna Avaliani specializes in non-invasive cosmetic and laser surgery. She is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Specialties. She is a recipient of multiple prestigious awards, a national GAIN trainer for injectables, a member of the prestigious Galderma faculty, and a board advisor for numerous anti-aging committees. Her signature treatment is 3D skin rejuvenation, which involves a thorough facial anatomy evaluation. The treatment starts with restoring facial support, adding volume to deflated or sunken areas, and then removing superficial lines, wrinkles, and folds using combination injection and laser therapies. Social Life sat down with Dr. Avaliani to learn more about what makes her so sought after in Manhattan for beauty treatments. How would your clients describe you? I am regarded as a true artist with a vision and a skilled hand. Some of my patients refer to me as Picasso and a modern version of the late Dr. Brandt. An artist, a visionary, a teacher, and a student striving for more knowledge and self improvement for better techniques, lasers, injections, and results for my patients. What is your consultation approach? I have what I call a secret skill in which I envision a patient’s outcome and then use my artistic skills along with high-end tools to help achieve the most natural and desirable results which all my patients absolutely love. I take my time during consultations to listen to each concern, evaluate the patient’s facial anatomy, get a feel for their realistic expectations, and then I explain and educate them on their signs of aging using many educational books which depict aging. I never focus on one feature, but rather make all features come together. Being a GAIN national trainer for the Galderma aesthetics company, I am also super excited to soon receive the first-ever 3D virtual-reality teaching app called Gia to educate my colleagues, students, and patients.

When would you turn a patient away? When I sense that their expectations are not realistic, and I know that surgery will give them their desired result. I always give them options of doing nothing, trying the best non-surgical options, or, if I believe they need surgery, I advise them to get a surgical consultation. What is the age range for your patients? The youngest patient for injections is 18 and the oldest is 87. What areas can you treat? I do not stop at the face. We treat the full body. Even the face has multiple areas which need to be supported, like temDr. Anna Avaliani ples, upper cheeks, and corners of the jaw line and chin. It’s about attention to detail. We love rejuvenating ear lobes. We offer non-surgical nose augmentation, non-surgical chin augmentation. We love and treat sagging neck skin, chest wrinkles, saggy breasts, upper-arm flabbiness, aging hands, abdominal loose skin after pregnancy, inner-thigh and above-knee loose skin. We also love toning, lifting flat or saggy butts without surgery. How do you make your patients feel comfortable? I utilize my custom-blend numbing cream formulated by me and compounded by my pharmacy. I also use micro-cannulas for injections to minimize bruising, swelling, and injection discomfort. We utilize a special vein-finder light to minimize and eliminate bruising. I also offer pain-free treatment with the ProNox nitrous oxide system, which relaxes the patient and provides a comfortable experience even for the most scared and anxious patients. SUMMER ESSENTIALS CLEANSING FROM THE INSIDE OUT By Blair Bass

Cassie Karopkin, the founder of Colon Therapy NYC

T

here’s a common struggle that no one talks about but can ruin vacations, events, date nights, and your confidence. Constipation. Yes, I said it. Even when we are quarantining and have nowhere to go, digestive discomfort and constipation can seriously affect your mental and physical health. Especially during times of stress, many of us tend to reach for comfort foods (for, well, comfort!) and this is an enormous contributor to bloating, weight gain, and general discomfort. Enter Covid-19 and cleansing is now more important than ever. Seventy percent of our immune system resides in our gastrointestinal tract, meaning that when our gut is cleansed and healthy, we are able to have natural defenses against viruses like Covid-19 and other pathogens, as well as diseases like colon cancer.

A Social Life Magazine editor went on the hunt to find the best colon therapist in the New York metropolitan area. Colon Therapy NYC, located in Chelsea, makes it a priority to educate clients on healthy living through posting free at-home detox protocols on Instagram, hosting informational webinars, and continuing to see a limited number of clients — of course applying the highest sanitary and safety protocols. Cassie Karopkin, the founder of Colon Therapy NYC, is a spokeswoman for good gut health. She started her journey when she stumbled across a book at a garage sale about poop, making the connection that what comes out is just as important as what goes in. By the time she found this book, she had already landed her dream job after studying math and actuarial science, but after she finished reading the book and made her first colonic appointment, she never looked back. After her first colonic and making changes to her diet, her chronic acne cleared up; regular headaches, bloating, and gas disappeared; and she began to feel better overall from the inside out. This inspired her to study colon hydrotherapy and then build a women-led and women-run business in New York, trying to spread the word about internal cleansing and make the incredible benefits of colonics mainstream knowledge. Colon cleansing might not be talked about much in the media, but it’s far from a new practice. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks practiced inner cleansing, as did traditional Chinese and Indian cultures. In fact, thanks to the French Court of Louis XIV, which favored enemas for a wide variety of health complaints, the 17th century became known as the “Age of the Enema.” It was the fashion in Parisian society to have as many as three or four enemas a day for beauty and health. The cosmetic and other benefits of colonics are a happy side effect of a healthy microbiome. Colon Therapy NYC’s clients often report glowing skin, acne and skin problems disappearing, weight-loss, and even that they feel and appear younger. Depending on your height, age, and weight, you could be storing anywhere from five to thirty pounds of old fecal matter in your colon, even if you are going to the bathroom regularly. Ew, ouch! This buildup can cause the appearance of weight gain, but it can also stop your metabolism from functioning at full capacity and prevent proper absorption of nutrients. When this old waste stays in your body, it can affect everything from your metabolism to your skin, weight, Social Life

and digestion. When the bowels become toxic due to waste buildup, this can, in turn, burden your liver and lead to mucoid plaque buildup (it’s as gross as it sounds). When you purge your system of harmful waste, you can even notice positive changes in your mental health. Ninety percent of serotonin is made in the digestive tract, and Colon Therapy NYC’s clients often report symptoms of depression, anxiety, and mood swings disappearing after regular colonics paired with a guthealing protocol. Take a peek at the different types of colonics offered at Colon Therapy NYC: CLASSIC COLONIC This classic gravity-centered hydro-colonic therapy offers dramatic results without a traumatic process. Gravity-centered colonics allow for the simultaneous intake and exit of water throughout the treatment, allowing for a relaxing and comfortable, yet deep, cleansing. COFFEE + CHLOROPHYLL COLONIC Coffee enemas have been used for as far back as 1500 BC. This type of cleansing is excellent for stimulating the liver to dump bile by absorption of coffee into the hemorrhoidal veins. SocialLifeMagazine.com

The addition of chlorophyll to your colon hydrotherapy treatment is useful for PH balancing, healing, and cleansing the internal organs, and detoxifying the colon walls. Chlorophyll binds tightly to toxins. Once the coffee stimulates your gallbladder to contract and release toxin-laden bile into the small intestine, the chlorophyll binds to the toxins tightly enough to prevent the reabsorption through the intestinal wall. CBD-INFUSED COLONIC A first ever colon-therapy original! Colon Therapy NYC strongly believes in the use of plant therapies when available, sourcing the highest quality, third-party, lab-tested, broadspectrum CBD to infuse during a colon hydrotherapy session. Experience CBD’s soothing, tension-melting effects. CBD is delivered via the rectum, which readily absorbs it, creating muscular relaxation and localized relief from discomfort and inflammation. BARBA LAUNCHES ‘QUARANCUTS’ VIRTUAL HAIR SCHOOL By Lillian Langtry

F

or years grooming boutiques and barbershops have coexisted, separate entities serving different clients. Barba Men’s Grooming Boutique unites two different services in a single place, offering high-end boutique grooming services and more modestly priced traditional barbering under a single roof, led by Xavier Cruz. The boutique is staffed with professionals who are highly experienced and well-regarded, including Xavier Cruz himself, the owner-founder of Xavier Cruz Salon and Xac Anthony Salon & Spa. One of the less discussed challenges of the lockdown following the Covid-19 outbreak has been that individuals all over are finding themselves in dire need of a haircut. Spouses, partners, parents, and children are suddenly being drafted as amateur barbers and stylists — with results that are stylistically catastrophic. To help remedy the situation and deliver some much-needed relief, Barba, in partnership with the communications agency Terri & Sandy, has launched the Quarancuts Virtual Hair School. Each day, Barba’s owner and master stylist, Xavier Cruz, will guide amateur stylists through the techniques of men’s haircuts

via Zoom. Anyone interested in taking the course can direct message (DM) Barba on Instagram, with all Quarancuts sessions airing simultaneously on IGTV so that friends, family, and the wider community can get in on the lesson. Every groundbreaking initiative must have a first star, and the first amateur stylist to attend Quarancuts was the Billy Porter Grammy-winning singer, Tony-winning actor, and renowned style icon Billy Porter, who enrolled to cut the hair of his husband, Adam Porter-Smith. About his first Quarancuts experience, Billy Porter said, “My nerves faded away with Xavier’s guidance. Humbling and Fabulous!” His husband, Adam, added, “Xavier saved the day teaching my husband how to give me a desperately needed trim.” Xavier Cruz says, “Without a doubt, these are hard times, but not all is lost. Quarancuts puts us closer together. We created this program to not only make us feel great over our appearance, but to also have fun. We will certainly have some good laughs during our sessions.” Digital and social content for the Quarancuts Virtual Hair School will be broadcast across social media on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram as well as on Barba’s website, barbamgb.com. During this pandemic, Barba Men’s Grooming Boutique wants to help LGBTQ homeless youth in NYC with a virtual tip jar. Every dollar collected will be donated to the non-profit organization New Alternatives. The funds will be used to feed homeless youth. So, after your haircut, if you tip, you’ll help those in need. TOP NATURAL ANTIVIRALS BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM By Kristy Rao

S

ince ancient times, herbs, spices, and vegetables have been used as natural treatments for various illnesses, including viral infections. Today, potent plant compounds are still favored by practitioners of natural medicine. However, it is important to exercise all necessary precautions, such as wearing a mask. Although the botanicals discussed below will help strengthen your immune system, they will not necessarily prevent or cure Covid-19. Nonetheless, here are eight natural options that have powerful capabilities against viruses and bacteria.

Echinacea is one of the most well-known antiviral herbs. Studies suggest that it effectively fights certain viruses, including the flu and herpes. I personally love it as a tea! You’ll can also find it in capsule form.

Ginger supports the immune system. A cup of ginger tea or green juice with added ginger may stave off an infection. I love to put some in my smoothie. Look below for a recipe!

So, my friends, instead of stocking your shopping cart with toilet paper, bring this list along with you the next time you go to the grocery store! Please always check with your doctor before taking supplements or herbs if you are pregnant or on medication.

Oregano is a popular herb in the mint family that’s known for its impressive medicinal qualities. One study showed that oregano could reduce viral activity in just 15 minutes! Try adding a few drops of food-grade oregano oil to orange juice. As a forewarning, it will feel like your throat is on fire for about five minutes.

Onions contain antioxidants that fight inflammation. They protect against infections, asthma, and arthritis, and improve heart health. They are among the world’s oldest cultivated plants. Go ahead and put plenty of onion in your omelet tomorrow morning!

Basil is antimicrobial and helps to fight chronic diseases. In one study sweet basil (the most common variety) exhibited potent effects against multiple viruses. Another study found that basil supplements significantly increased the number of cells that help to fight viral infections. And you thought it was just for pesto!

Kristy Rao, Photo by Frank Rocco

Garlic is not only good to keep vampires out of sight, it is one of the world’s strongest anti-viral foods. Research shows that garlic has the potential to kill or cripple as many as 72 strains of bacteria and icky viruses. So go ahead and start throwing garlic in all your meals, just in case. Elderberry has been shown in some studies to bind to some subtypes of flu viruses to prevent cell entry. It comes in many forms. I recommend elderberry tea or supplements. Curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, has been used for centuries as a powerful anti-inflammatory. To enhance its absorption, consume turmeric powder with a pinch of pepper and a healthy fat, such as coconut oil. Look online for a delicious golden milk recipe. SocialLifeMagazine.com

DR . MARIE V. HAYAG FIFTH AVENUE AESTHETICS By Chris Cameron Photography By Vital Agibalow

ARTISTIC PRINCIPLES OF BEAUTY Dr. Marie Hayag has built one of the most respected dermatology practices in the city. Her clients are New York’s best-known public figures. The most discreet slip in unnoticed through her Fifth Avenue office’s VIP entrance for cutting-edge treatments. Specializing in aesthetic procedures, Dr. Hayag says she often thinks of herself as a sculptor as much as a medical professional. Artistic principles of beauty guide her hand, while science informs her decision-making. “When I evaluate someone it’s like looking at a canvas,” she says. “Most of my patients are seeking facial consultation, so I evaluate their whole face, their three-dimensional face. I look at different angles and shadows. I talk to them about beauty and its relationship to proportion. It is never just one thing. The answer is not just Botox or a filler, but is usually multiple approaches and treatments that give one the optimal look. My happiest patients are those who come in for regular maintenance treatments.” INTRODUCTION TO DERMATOLOGY The good doctor might never have made her mark on Manhattan nor found her calling if she hadn’t contracted a severe case of the

chicken pox. “It really sucked,” laughs Dr. Hayag, who graduated from Florida State University with magna cum laude honors and then attended the University of Miami School of Medicine, where she conducted multiple clinical research studies, including sunscreen’s effects on UV-induced immunosuppression and the early trials of Botox. Dr. Hayag says, “I had an incredibly itchy rash all over my body and, as I suspected, was diagnosed with chicken pox by Dr. Richard Taylor, an attending physician in the dermatology department. Shortly after my visit, I ran into Dr. Taylor, who inquired about what specialty I intended to choose. When I told him I still had not decided, he suggested that I might be interested in dermatology, and he ultimately became my mentor during the rest of medical school and my dermatology residency. The only benefit of having chicken pox was it led me to selecting dermatology as my specialty. How lucky was I!” GO SEMINOLES! Dr. Hayag was raised in the small town of St. Marys, Georgia, just across the Florida state line. Her family still calls St. Marys home, and she still considers herself first and foremost a Southern girl. Social Life

College football is part of the package (go Seminoles!). But after graduating from medical school, Manhattan was where she put down roots. “Prior to doing your residency, you do an internship and I decided to go to New York on the recommendation of a friend,” she says. “I had never been to New York, and I wanted to go somewhere that was different from where I had lived down South.” NEW YORK CITY The first year she spent in New York in the late 1990s was “the best time ever,” Dr. Hayag says. She got a fifth-floor walk-up apartment on Perry Street in the West Village. She worked nearby at the former Saint Vincent’s Hospital, which closed in 2010. “Living in the Village was a great experience for me even though I was working my butt off,” she recalls. “Although on-call all the time as an intern, I was able to experience all New York City had to offer.” It was during that time that she met her future husband, William, through a friend. The only problem was that she had already committed to a three-year residency in Miami. “It was difficult, but we made it work,” she says. “He would leave on Friday evening and spend the weekend in South Beach. But when I was ready to start practicing, I came back to New York.” After returning to the city in 2001, it took Dr. Hayag nearly two decades to establish her Upper East Side office at 875 Fifth Avenue, which is across the park from her home on the Upper West Side. I worked at a practice with a colleague and that lasted for 17 years,” she says. “I should have opened my own office sooner than I did, but you never know with life, and I guess I wasn’t quite ready.” Today, Dr. Hayag says she has succeeded in building the practice that she had always dreamed of. SCIENCE & ARTISTRY Dr. Hayag always wanted a concierge dermatology practice. It is important to her to make patients feel welcomed and to give them the personal care they deserve. In addition to highly customized programs and access to the field’s latest technology and cuttingedge treatments, Dr. Hayag says that it is her time and attention that translate into successful outcomes. “I use my knowledge of science and artistry to customize every person’s individual beauty. Everyone is different. You do not want everyone to look the same. I ask patients what bothers them and what they want to focus on. Then I discuss what I think would bring out their best features. My goal is to make them look like their best selves.” HAMPTONS HOUSE CALLS When the Covid-19 pandemic hit New York, Dr. Hayag never stopped serving her patients. “I’ve been in the city the whole time,” she said. “We had to close for a couple of months, but we are now open.” Dr. Hayag also makes house calls in the Hamptons. SocialLifeMagazine.com

THE NEW NORMAL & CDC PROTOCOLS In accordance with CDC protocols, Dr. Hayag has taken every possible coronavirus precaution. This includes pre-visit and timeof-visit Covid-19-related questionnaires, direct placement into an exam room, temperature readings, masks for both patients and staff, thorough sanitizing of rooms before and after each use, and contactless payment and check-out. If someone is unable or uncomfortable visiting her office, telemedicine allows her to consult with a patient anywhere in the world, at any time. FIVE-STAR TREATMENT The world may have changed, but Dr. Hayag’s five-star treatment for all patients has remained the same. “What I love about being in aesthetic dermatology is that you really do make a difference in someone’s life,” she says. “We know that if someone looks better, they feel better about themselves. That is always my goal.” Marie V. Hayag, M.D. Fifth Avenue Aesthetics 875 Fifth Avenue mariehayagmd.com 212.722.2055

SHOMARI OSAKWE ALI THE PINNACLE OF PERSONAL TRAINING By Blair Bass

Shomari Osakwe Ali

T

he best trainers get to know you. They inspire and motivate you. They help you reach your goals. After years of trial and error (and there’s plenty of that in this category), our editors have chosen the best trainer in the city: Meet Shomari Osakwe Ali.

some of our favorite brands, including Bottega Veneta, Rag & Bone, the Gucci Group, and Saks Fifth Avenue. When he sensed a foreboding shift in the retail industry — from brick and mortar to online — he decided to turn his lifelong fitness hobby into his profession.

WHY DID WE SELECT HIM? Shomari delivers more than you might expect from a personal trainer. Striking the perfect balance between health advisor, motivator, body and nutrition expert, and, well, your cool friend, he’s someone you really want to spend time with. It’s no wonder why the who’s who of Wall Street and music A-listers clamor for a spot on his calendar. He’s a trainer who just “gets it.” His positive, unwavering (but not pedantic) outlook on life translates to a unique training style — and that’s just one of the reasons we adore him. For Shomari, it’s more than just lifting weights and looking good on the outside. He promotes a holistic wellness approach — mentally, physically, and spiritually.

AFFINITY FOR FITNESS & HEALTH Shomari grew up as an athlete playing basketball, baseball, football, track, cross country, and even joined a neighborhood bowling team. After his years in luxury retail management, he started out in the fitness industry as a part-time fitness trainer at Equinox (yes, we all love their eucalyptus-infused steam rooms). Meanwhile he continued his education, becoming a certified fitness trainer through the American Council on Exercise Science as well as a Precision Nutrition certified nutrition coach (yes indeed, Precision is the best in nutrition certification). Then, after four years of training for corporate gyms he decided to resign and create Infinite Wellness Online L.L.C. In addition, he is a certified functional training specialist through the American Council on Exercise Science and currently competes as a USPA powerlifter. And there you have it; at only 30 years old Shomari is carving his niche in Manhattan’s elite fitness market.

FROM LUXURY RETAIL TO FITNESS GURU A Harlem native, Shomari launched Infinite Wellness Online L.L.C. after spending a decade in the luxury fashion industry working with

Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen. MICHAEL JORDAN GIVING INFINITE WELLNESS Infinite Wellness Online L.L.C. services include one-on-one personal training, small group training, remote personal training, and corporate wellness programs and events. The company operates out of Remorca 17 (when not in Covid mode) — a stateof-the-art luxury facility located in Gramercy Park. Remorca 17 has all the sophisticated equipment of your dreams: pressure resistance cable machines, VersaClimbers, treadmills, inBody BFP scales, PowerPlates, Sled Pushes, Olympic squat racks — everything a trainer needs to program a session for anyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes to seniors. FINDING THE SILVER LINING As we all know, the fitness industry was among the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to government mandated gym shutdowns, fitness professionals needed to adapt or see their businesses crumble. Trainers across the globe scrambled to convert their in-person businesses to virtual businesses overnight. Shomari quickly adapted, creating online live and taped options, and sending daily workout programs to his clients even if they weren’t scheduled for a Zoom or FaceTime session. He kept them engaged, launched a progressive home-training experience, and introduced his Good Energy Shop (goodenergyhere.com) to help his clients get the fitness equipment they needed for virtual workouts (remember how difficult it was to find fitness equipment!). The shop also carries wellness products. Our favorite is the lavender oil sleep mist and the energy cleansing kit with sage. DOING GOOD With his roots in Harlem, Shomari continually seeks ways to give back to the community. Earlier this year, he partnered with the Bronx Community Board to offer free group fitness classes to Bronx residents. Pre-pandemic, these classes were taught inperson. but during the lockdown the classes moved to Zoom. It has been an effective way to keep people motivated and moving throughout these uncertain times. There will always be demand for one-to-one in-person training, but with the evolving global landscape, don’t be surprised if remote training continues to gain traction and grow even when the rules lighten up and a vaccine is available. In fact, I already feel less stressed about continuing my global travels when the time is right, as I no longer need to feel like I’ll be missing my proper workouts. Shomari will travel with me via my iPad. Fit, fun, and fab. Shomari keeps it real and can keep you in shape. SocialLifeMagazine.com

What is your take on attitude? There are no good or bad days. There is only your perspective. One with the ability to see the opportunity for growth in every situation has true power. What is your favorite exercise? My favorite is the barbell deadlift both to coach and to perform. The deadlift is a great measure of an athlete’s overall strength. I will be attempting to deadlift over 600 pounds this year for the USPA (United States Powerlifting Association) in an official, drug-tested competition. How do you measure success? I measure my success by how many people I have genuinely helped and affected on their paths. Although financial security is extremely important to survive in our society, I try hard to not chase money but to instead provide a valuable service that my clients are excited to be a part of. CHRISTIE BRINKLEY By Devorah Rose

In true quarantine fashion, we are featuring a safe and social-distance cover, starring our beloved perennial Christie Brinkley in bathing suits and locales that celebrate the Hamptons and the spirit of the summer. We have rounded up many of our favorite images of Christie from over the years — from the first time she donned a bathing suit for Social Life to recent images from last summer. It’s always a joy to catch up on all things Christie as she is someone whose energy and enthusiasm are both infectious and inspiring. The second image in our layout is of you in the black Alaïa swimsuit. That shot was the first time you got back into a swimsuit thirty years after your last Sports Illustrated cover and it was also our first cover shoot together. What were your thoughts the day you were asked to get back into swim? I was starting to fall prey to ‘age rules’ and not wanting to look ‘inappropriate,’ and as soon as that thought entered my head I realized I needed to liberate myself from that thought and any thoughts that reduce me or make me conform. So I stepped into that bathing suit, and it proved to be an age-rule-breaking shot that resulted in a lot of kind notes from women saying it

made them feel more positive about aging. Considering the alternatives. I think aging is a lucky gift to celebrate! During quarantine you’ve created a victory garden. Can you tell us more about that? I’m kind of a news hound. I was following everything about Covid closely and felt that we were probably going to be in it for the long haul, and I immediately sensed that we were going to need to both decompress from the severity of the news and also try to do something that could also be helpful to our community. I remembered reading about victory gardens during the World Wars, that women were able to help their communities by planting vegetables, fruits, and herbs. It took some of the stress off the supply chains and it allowed people to have local fresh produce, so I thought that is what I should do! I always turned to nature in stressful times in my life and found the perfect balance between staying informed with what is going on in the world and being able to diffuse the worry with the beauty of nature and the magic of watching a seed come back to life. Audrey Hepburn said, ‘To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” So that is how it began!

How has quarantine been going for you? The most stressful part, and I’m sure everyone had the same feeling, was the first 14 days wondering if you had caught it. I had been pretty active right before going into quarantine, so for 14 days I was worried about my kids, friends, and myself while we all waited to see if we were in the clear. I started the quarantine with my son, Jack, and his girlfriend, Nina, and we were a great ‘quran-team,’ but they did have to put up with singing ‘Just the three of us, we can make it if we try, just three of us.’ Jack and I did the gardening and Nina did the cooking for the most part! Since then, over time we have filtered in Sailor and her boyfriend, Ben, and Alexa and her fiancé, Ryan. Now I have the whole family here with me, and we feel very grateful to be together. What are your thoughts on Covid-19? I was in NYC at the start of the coronavirus, and it was immediately obvious to me that we were reliant on the brave heroes on the front lines who really stepped up and rose to meet this really very dangerous demand that they carry on in light of not really knowing anything about this virus other than it was highly contagious. They had tremendous courage and

bravery — and I’m talking about our incredible hospital heroes to those who manned the cashier stations at the grocery stores and stocked the shelves and kept the transportation system going to all of those people who kept working in the face of the unknown. They are true heroes, and the spirit of New Yorkers helping one another through it was really inspiring, and we were seeing echoes of this all over like the way Italians would sing together. This human spirit rose up all over the world to defy this unknown threat to our existence and was really awe-inspiring. I was so proud of my company Bellissima giving such a large part of our profits for two months straight to provide PPE where it was so desperately needed. What has it been like quarantining in the Hamptons? Once I decided to leave the city and come out to the country I felt a huge relief to be able to step outside and be in nature. As I say, it has always been my way of coping. When it started it was still the tail end of winter, and I was able to walk on the long deserted windswept beaches and have space to think and find perspective. I felt very lucky to be able to do that. Now that it is summertime, and a lot of people have come out to their homes in the Hamptons, it is busy. But the topography

of the coastline here, which has always been the thing that attracted me to Long Island, is now providing us with places — endless places — to comb the beaches and paddle the inlets and socially distance safely. Any tips on staying safe? Wear your mask!! A lot of people seem to think that you are insulting someone by wearing your mask, but really you are protecting them from anything that you might have been exposed to because you never know. It is a sign of respect and caring for the person that you are near. You have to start thinking of it like that. You have to protect the people around you. It is your responsibility, your duty. And wash your hands! Stay six feet apart! Just because the numbers have gone down doesn’t mean people haven’t traveled in from other hotspots. During quarantine, funny enough, I’ve become a bit of a chef. Are there any new skills you’ve developed during this time? I have always had a little garden since I moved to the Hamptons, but I have never been here for such a long stretch. I have never gone from putting the seed in the ground to full harvest and witnessing the whole process. It is so exciting to experience!

SocialLifeMagazine.com

When will you begin to go to restaurants and be social again? We are cautiously optimistic. And we would like to support our local businesses, like we did yesterday. We did have lunch late in the day when it was empty at Maria Fell, and we had the dock pretty much to ourselves. Her food is excellent and she is at risk of losing the restaurant, so I would urge people to go and pick up some take-out food, or, if the conditions are right, grab yourself a seat and support our local businesses that need our help. I am always keeping my family’s safety in mind and look for businesses that provide breezy, socially-distant seating, insist that masks and gloves are worn, and understand safety is always first! What are your thoughts about the current social unrest? I feel that the Covid-19 made people grapple with their own vulnerabilities and be empathetic about other people’s suffering. If something good can come out of this terribly tragic time, where lives and jobs have been lost, if we can come out of this a kinder, more empathic and compassionate nation, that will be a good thing. In everything you look for a lesson, and a silver lining.



F E AT U R E S

What brings you happiness or makes you laugh during quarantine? My kids make me laugh, and I am happiest when I am surrounded by family gathered around the fire or watching a series together. For the first time, I have watched a lot of TV series. Cooking together. Harvesting the garden together. Now that the weather is warmer, we are able to get out on our boat and poke around together, and that is just great!

How is Bellissima during these trying times? I mentioned earlier that I am so proud that we were able to use proceeds from our online sales to buy PPE for the months of April and May. And in June I was thrilled that I was able to launch the Bambinis on QVC, so people can have the convenience of the smaller bottles in their quarantine. The little bottle is just right for quarantining alone and when hesitant to open a big bottle.

Has Covid-19 changed your experience of the Hamptons? The Hamptons beauty is in full swing — trees and flowers are blooming, the skies have been clear and blue, and humidity has been low. There are still endless beaches with few people, kayaking in the bay, wind surfing, stand-up paddle-boarding, but it is the evenings that are different now. You don’t go to Surf Lodge and hear music as the sun sets. You don’t end up at Sunset Beach and bump into friends. That is what we are going to have to wait a while for before we get back to that kind of normal

I think especially when times are tough like this, you have to make a conscious effort to find a reason to celebrate. It is important to keep celebrating small victories. It can be that your first tomato has appeared on the vine. It can be that you got your puppy washed and used those clippers — celebrate that. You managed that you cut your own hair and didn’t do too bad, celebrate! You have to continue to find things to celebrate. It is important and you don’t know what is in store for you, so celebrate as much as you can every day. Thank you Christie!

THE FAST & FABULOUS BMW KYLE JOHNSON, VIP & SPECIALTY SALES, FOR BMW GROUP By Blair Bass Photography By M arsin M ogielski

B

MW has become the quintessential luxury automobile out East and people are flocking to the new 8-series like bees to honey. The sizzling 8-series has us in total awe. Fast and fabulous, its powerful engines and sleek styles are inimitable with hand crafted details and unparalleled performance. What is it about BMW that makes it so sexy? A Social Life editor sat down with Kyle Johnson, VIP & Specialty Sales, for BMW Group to gain his perspective on why BMW is a beloved brand in the Hamptons. BMW embodies the essence of the Hamptons — classic, luxurious, elegant, the best in class. What is your favorite BWM in the 8 series? Within the series it has to be the M8 Gran Coupe; beautiful styling with hand-crafted details, an endless rush of power and luxurious versatility begging to be shared with family and friends. A combination that is unrivaled among sport sedans. Now that restaurants are opening up in the Hamptons, are there ones you’re excited to go back to? I’m thrilled to see restaurants and businesses start to open again. I’m a local guy, so I love the great local, staple spots: Bostwick’s, Cappeletti’s, and Gosman’s. If it’s for a nicer, more formal dinner, some of my favorites are The American Hotel, Pierre’s, and Jean George’s at Topping Rose House. What is your favorite thing about working for BMW? BMW Group is a global icon and staple of the premium car industry. My favorite thing would have to be our products. Our cars are “The Ultimate Driving Machine.” They are the pinnacle of performance and driving experience, while maintaining the highest qualities of true luxury. Why did BMW partner with Social Life for this year’s Polo Bridgehampton? I see Social Life Magazine as the perfect partner for BMW. Both companies stand for the same ideas: luxury, prestige, and exclusivity. I wanted to broaden BMW’s footprint in the Hamptons. Social Life Magazine advertising and its exclusive events to help showcase our cars are the perfect mix. I can’t wait to see how people respond to our vehicles at Polo Hamptons.

Kyle Johnson

What’s your favorite thing about the Hamptons? My favorite activity while in the Hamptons is enjoying the beaches while being minutes away from everything that the area has to offer. The quiet towns, estates, vineyards and horse farms all play a part in the lifestyle out East. bmwofsouthampton.com 759 County Road 39A, Southampton Social Life

MR . BROADWAY TALKS SUMMER THEATER By Jessica Shapiro

S

tewart F. Lane is the co-owner and operator of the legendary Palace Theatre in NYC, currently under renovation as part of the $2.5 billion TSX Broadway deal scheduled for opening in late 2021. He is a six-time Tony Award winner, an Olivier Award winner, and a co-founder of BroadwayHD, a stage-to-screen video-on-demand streaming service, featuring over 300 fulllength plays and musicals. It’s no surprise that his wife, Bonnie Comley, dubbed him “Mr. Broadway.” “About 25 years ago, my wife told me that I needed a website. Of course, I had no idea what that meant or why I needed it, but the next thing I knew, she had secured the domain MrBroadway.com. She was a journalist and she started by posting stories and photos of the charity events that we supported and the shows that we were working on. It was an early internet blog, and after my theater history books got published, the book reviewers started referring to me as ‘Mr. Broadway.’ ”

Lane is the author of the books Let’s Put On A Show, Jews on Broadway, Black Broadway, and the off-Broadway plays In the Wings and If It Was Easy (nominated for best new play by the American Theatre Critics Association). Lane conceived and wrote the musical Back Home Again, for which he received the John Denver Spirit Award, and he is currently developing it for a New York production. Before buying his East Hampton home, Lane directed stage shows across the country. “When our youngest daughter turned four, my wife said that we needed to let the kid get out from the backstage at the theaters and get some sunshine in the summers, so we landed in East Hampton,” said Lane. Lane says he attends shows or works at the theaters in the Hamptons because “I need to be involved and immersed in a show. And there’s plenty of great theater happening yearround in the Hamptons.” This summer will be different due to social distancing, so check the websites for Covid-19 restrictions, online virtual programming, or to just make a donation to these wonderful arts organizations of the Hamptons. Bay Street Theater is a year-round professional theater that not only presents great productions but has developed shows that go on to Broadway or other regional stages. JOHN BRADHAM JEAN SHAFIROFF INTERVIEWS JOHN BRADHAM, PRESIDENT OF SOUTHAMPTON ANIMAL SHELTER FOUNDATION

John, can you give our readers a little background on the SASF? SASF, which stands for Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, was formed in 2010 by a group of local animal lovers to privatize and operate the Southampton Shelter. SASF has operated the shelter since January 2010 pursuant to a contract with the town of Southampton. It is an open-intake shelter for the 22 towns in the area, but it also takes homeless animals from kill shelters and other dire situations throughout Long Island and the rest of the country, including New York City, Texas, Puerto Rico, and other places. It has even taken dogs rescued from the meat trade in China. Since taking over the shelter, SASF has transformed it into a wonderful home for homeless animals with many adoptions and fosters occurring every year. Among the many community services it offers is a veterinary and wellness center offering low-cost spaying and neutering and general veterinary services. It also operates a veterinary mobile clinic that offers low-cost spaying and neutering to low income pet owners throughout Long Island. This year has been very challenging for our world. Can you tell our readers how the shelter has responded to the Covid-19 pandemic? It certainly has been a challenging time, but SASF has not missed a step. It has continuously operated as an openintake shelter for the 22 towns it serves. In March, at the height of the pandemic, it closed to the public but continued to offer its animals for foster and adoption. All the animals available for fostering or adopting are on the website. You can visit our website and fill out an application

for the animal you are interested in and/or call the shelter to make an appointment to meet any animal. SASF even offers curbside fostering and adopting where you can meet the animals you are interested in without leaving your car. And our trainers will introduce any animals you already have to the one you are interested in to make sure it is a good fit. This is wonderful. Are the number of adoptions up or down at the SASF and throughout the country? One of the good things that has come out of the pandemic is that fosters and adoptions are way up at SASF and throughout the country. Fostering and adopting is not only helping the animals, but it is helping people cope with the anxiety and loneliness many people are experiencing during the pandemic. It is a win-win for both people and the animals. How can our readers apply to adopt a cat or dog? It is very simple! Just go to the SASF website and find the cat, dog, bunny, bird or guinea pig you are interested in and fill out SocialLifeMagazine.com

the linked application. You will promptly hear from one of our adoption/foster coordinators. Or you can call the shelter and ask to speak with an adoption/foster coordinator. It is a fun, easy, and quick process. We’ll help you find your new best friend, and you’ll be very happy you did. Will you have a virtual gala this year? How can we all be of help? We unfortunately had to cancel our Unconditional Love gala this summer due to the pandemic, but we will be offering a matching donation program, which we will be rolling out shortly. We decided not to have a virtual gala during the pandemic due to the time, expense, and difficulty involved, and because we did not feel it was the right time for a gala. To donate to the shelter, go to southamptonanimalshelter.com Can you tell our readers about future plans of the shelter? We have big plans to play a bigger role in making the country no-kill and to save all of our shelter animals. We are working

on plans to renovate and expand the shelter, particularly its training and veterinary facilities. Senior animals and animals with health and training issues are the ones who need the most help in finding their forever home, and we are going to play a bigger role on Long Island and throughout the country in helping them. We will be launching a capital campaign for this next year and hope that the animals and SASF can count on your continued support.

Social Life editor’s note: Jean Shafiroff is an honorary board member and an ambassador for Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. She has chaired its annual gala for several years, and has been a major volunteer fundraiser and donor for the shelter. In 2017, she was honored by SASF at its annual gala. ABOUT JOHN M. BRADHAM John has been a complex commercial litigator for over 30 years. He practices with his firm Morea Schwartz Bradham Friedman & Brown LLP in NYC. He is a longtime animal lover, advocate, and philanthropist. He works with and is on the board of many animal rights and welfare groups, including rescues, shelters, and sanctuaries in New York, Los Angeles, and elsewhere. He lives in Soho with his two beloved Maltese rescues.

Broadway actor Nathan Lane co-stars as a convincingly macho detective.

Lewis confided, “I didn’t want to play another psychopath, but the script and the story were incredible.” Maggie Siff, who plays the sexy life coach role claims, “I never went through a bad-girl period.” OK!

RACHEL’S RADAR SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES By Rachel Heller

Jesse Warren, photo by Jared Siskin/PMC. Julie Heller, photo courtesy of Eraluxe. Zach Erdem, photo by Donnelly Marks

L

ocal business support during this pandemic is necessary now more than ever. Forced closings and shoppers shifting to more online shopping have caused problems for the local businesses in the Hamptons. This summer my Radar has pivoted to help others and our community survive. We have to stick together and support our town family and local farms out East. Eating fresh is also much healthier for you anyway. Coming out East as I was growing up was a privilege and now it is time to appreciate those who have made the Hamptons such a beautiful and wholesome playground. When I first went into the Village of Southampton after the pandemic began, I could feel the heaviness in the air and could sense others’ sadness. The Hamptons have always been a safe escape from the city, a place to turn off from the noise and stress of bustling traffic and heavy schedules. SOME FEEDBACK IS BELOW FROM THREE LOCALS ABOUT THE NEW NORM Jesse Warren, the mayor of Southampton and the owner of Tenet clothing stores in Southampton and East Hampton, said it was very difficult when he was first helping the town to fight the pandemic. “Communication was key.” he said. And he had great communication with the residents and business leaders as well as officials in local and state government. He set up a volunteer program to deliver food, medicines, and other necessities to seniors who could not or would not leave their homes. Being a business owner is helpful he says, making him aware of and giving him perspective on the needs of business owners. He, like his fellow business owners, is taking direction from the state on how and when to open and what kinds of precautions must be taken. SocialLifeMagazine.com

The summer will be tough but he said we can look forward instead of looking back and have a somewhat successful summer. I think Mayor Warren should be proud of his hard work and that has resulted in positive changes in such a short time. Julie Heller, the owner of Cabana, which sells basics, resortwear, children’s wear as well as apothecary and collectible items, said, “The pandemic definitely posed some challenges for us as a small retail store, but it has shifted the way we interact with our clients and enabled us to build stronger, more personal relationships with our customers. It is truly inspiring to see a group of people come together and work towards a common goal, and we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to use some of our proceeds to give back to our community and even gift product to some of our extremely deserving front line workers.” Zach Erdem, the owner of 75 Main, a Southampton mainstay for dining and night life. “I had to close my restaurants in March and was finally able to re-open after three months, with new guidelines and rules we needed to follow for safety. We provided sanitizer, gloves, masks, and thermometer upon check in. All employees wear mandatory masks and gloves. Every single item is cleaned after every use making sure we take the necessary precautions in order to maintain a safe environment and enjoyable dining experience. We were inspected by the NY State Liquor Association and fire marshals on the new, approved floor plan, making sure all chairs were at least six feet apart so guests were safely practicing social distance. I really appreciated the support from the town and our loyal customers that have been dining here for over ten years while I took the risk to open, given all the difficulties and challenges faced during this pandemic.

ASAF GERMAN THE FACE OF LONG ISLAND REAL ESTATE By Rolise Rachel The attorney Asaf German can typically be found at a Long Island real estate closing, representing either a buyer or seller. With offices in Smithtown, Woodbury, and NYC, his law firm covers a lot of territory. During his 20 years of experience, with more than 15,000 residential and commercial real estate transactions, German has earned an exemplary reputation. German’s recognized expertise — especially in commercial and residential mortgages and foreclosures — made him sought after as an advisor about real estate law. This led to his starting a speaking program for the general public. His motto for anyone buying or selling real estate is “You can never be too educated.” Recently, at the Teachers Federal Credit Union, German gave a talk to a large group of standing-room-only first-time home buyers. This talk was part his series called “The Face of Long Island Real Estate.” German is known throughout Long Island for his “Dream Team.” He firmly believes that teamwork makes the dream work and, of course, knowledge is power. He attributes his success to his amazing staff, who assist him in being constantly aware of supporting each client’s interests while maintaining the highest standard of integrity from the negotiation process to closing. In addition, German, a father of two, is known as one of the most successful fundraisers for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). This Man of the Year raised over $460,000 in 10-weeks. This recordbreaking achievement German attributes to his fundraising team. In business and in fundraising, German’s approach enables him to assemble a dream team and to work with people who represent a diverse set of demographics, including a number of public figures, celebrities, and executives. LLS is the World’s leading voluntary health organization finding cures for blood cancer. If you have questions about LLS or want to reach Asaf German, email him at info@germanpc.com

FIVE WAYS TO TRULY GET AWAY FROM IT ALL By Anthony Giampetruzzi

N

early every day, information is released that puts our minds more at peace with travel. Flight paths are opening up — and so are the flights’ destination countries. Depending on how much you want to shell out, there are reasonable precautions that experts say will lower your risk when flying.

SCHLOSS ELMAU (BAVARIAN ALPS) schloss-elmau.de The abundance of space and privacy at Schloss Elmau is matched only by the energy of its regal environs: the empowering Alps. If, for you, getting away from it all doesn’t mean trekking to the tip of South America, sailing to a remote island, or shooting into space, this is your destination. Comfort and privacy can be had with a simple direct flight to Munich or Innsbruck, and then a quick drive. With every Covid-19 precaution firmly in place, visitors feel liberated outside in the wide-open silent sanctuary of the Bavarian Alps. Inside, the luxury of space and privacy in grand yet intimate interiors induces an immediate sense of calm and serenity. Spas and pools for adults (or families) advance the life aquatic, while Taiji and yoga retreats tap into your soul. The property is known for its exceptional programming roster. July and August will play host to classical, jazz, and contemporary musicians; sports camps for young people; golf, hiking, and climbing and tennis for the older set; and plenty of other sports, adventure, and academic options.

Our general rule of thumb: safety first. And try to get as far away from it all as possible. Well, we’ve taken the time to identify some gems that check both these boxes. Herewith are a few of our picks for the world’s best (and open) destinations.

With restaurants and lounges galore, it’s easy to spread out and enjoy the resort’s commitment to outstanding Asian and European high cuisine. Service is, naturally, impeccable. The property features two lodging options: Zimmer Im Retreat or Zimmer Im Hideaway. Both are five-star lodgings throughout and stamped with the approval of The Leading Hotels of the World.

HOTEL BRITANIA (TRONDHEIM, NORWAY) britannia.no What qualifies as remote? Travelling to Trondheim, Norway, which is just sixty miles south of the Arctic Circle. That said, this charming city is Norway’s third most populous and fourth largest. It’s streets are lined with colorful homes and filled with historic monuments. While summer is high season and not to be missed, September and October are also perfect times to visit if you prefer milder temperatures, fewer crowds

(tourism has trailed off a bit, obviously), and more opportunity to take in the Northern Lights. Nearby, the town of Røros is known for leading Norway’s local food movement, making the entire region a foodie destination. As for lodging, Hotel Britannia — which opened in 2019 after a four-year, $160-million renovation — is where you will certainly feel like royalty. Known as the world’s most northernly “Grande Dame Hotel,” the Britannia has indeed hosted royalty, politicians, explorers, Parisian fashionistas, and international stars of screen and stage. Acclaimed playwright Henrik Ibsen often shunned Olso in favor of Trondheim and the Britannia, and beginning in 1889, Kaiser Wilhelm II holidayed here every summer. Yes, Queen Elizabeth II has indeed rested on site. As for lodging, prepare to be pampered (while distancing, of course). Suites are naturally the most spacious, and one of our favorites is Colonialmajoren. The space includes an enormous seating area, a dining table, spacious wardrobes, and hallways, a “glam” room, and a marble bathroom with standalone bathtub and separate shower. Be sure to dine on-site at Speilsalen, which is helmed by the world champion chef and 2017 Bocuse d’Or silver medalist, Christopher Davidsen. The wine program, headed by triple Norwegian wine sommelier champion Henrik Dahl Jahnsen, will make your head spin in more ways than one.

D’ANGLETERRE (COPENHAGEN) dangleterre.com After nearly a decade, Copenhagen’s main city square, Kongens Nytorv, has recently reopened (think room to breathe easy) after nearly 30 years. Be one of the first to take in its dazzling majesty and beauty with a stay at one of the region’s other “grand dames” — this one a hotspot since 1755. The d’Angleterre, known as the “White Lady” of Copenhagen, is a spectacular property for both respite and a bite (or more). Featuring the Michelin-starred restaurant Marchal; a state-of-the-art Amazing Space spa; the city’s only Champagne bar, Balthazar; and a unique floral design atelier and boutique, Creations, this hotel’s amenities may keep you from making it out to the square. Choose the d’Angleterre Suite. Luxe with a capital “L,” this more than 1,000-square foot space is inspired by historic Danish authors and artists such as Karen Blixen (aka Isek Dinesen), Hans Christian Andersen, and Bertel Thorvaldsen, and features a massive living space, marble bathroom, and tons of extras.

HECKFIELD PLACE (HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND) heckfieldplace.com If you want a quick flight and the convenience of a major airport, but aren’t thrilled about staying in a major metropolis for long, Heckfield Place can’t be outdone. Besides, you’ve always wanted to see more of England than just London — well, there’s no time like the present. Heckfield Place is everything you’d expect from a classic Georgian estate. A country haven, sculpted over centuries by ancient heather, woodland, gardens, and meadows, Heckfield Place is both tame and gently wild. From the Georgian grandeur of the House — its elegant interiors reimagined with an unmistakably contemporary feel — to the rolling beauty of the grounds, the secluded and idyllic estate is a place in which to reconnect and rediscover. Unwind in the sanctuary that is the Little Bothy Spa, which is one with its environment. Treatment ingredients are drawn from the property’s own apothecary garden. Juices and infusions are also made fresh each day.

Maybe you’re lucky enough to have visited. Now, being there is more of an imperative. Depending on your definition of privacy (and luxury), you’ll want to consider your Soneva locale carefully. Soneva Jani is the premier collection of over-water villas and island sanctuaries set among crystal clear waters that are fringed by pristine beaches and lush tropical greenery. The vibe at Soneva Fushi is a bit different: The villas are hidden among dense foliage within the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The award-winning resort truly defines the essence of barefoot luxury with Robinson Crusoe simplicity. The resort’s down-to-earth personality is reflected in its nature-inspired architecture. The philosophy is simple: no news, no shoes. And, perhaps, no worries.

FOUR FOR THE ROAD By Anthony Giampetruzzi

omething unusual recently occurred. While participating in an exclusive Zoom coffee klatch, a local celeb (who, despite having impeccable antecedents, shall remain nameless) asked a curious question: “If I had a month with nothing to do and had to choose four top notch destinations to visit, what should they be?”

My response may well have been, “I’ve seen them all, and I’m happy to narrow it to one,” but I decided to play the game, imparting some picks to scratch the itches of adventure, culture, and luxury. Of course, dear reader, the game now, for you, is to determine which would have been my number one.

ENTRE CIELOS (MENDOZA, ARGENTINA) entrecielos.com The 24-room Entre Cielos is situated on 20 acres (including eight acres of Malbec vines) in the Mendoza countryside, and is a fantasy destination for oenophiles. Let’s face it: After the last few months, the first thing you need is a drink. The ultra-modern architecture and highly stylized rooms and suites are juxtaposed against the natural surroundings of the working vineyards and snow-capped Andes. For wine aficionados wishing to fully immerse themselves in the terroir, the unique Vineyard Lofts are situated right among the Malbec vines overlooking the vast landscape, where guests can luxuriate on private outdoor patios and relish in unparalleled stargazing. Entre Cielo also boasts Latin America’s first authentic sixstage circuit Hammam spa, offering a variety of vinotherapy treatments and different massages, an outdoor pool, signature restaurant serving sourced food, as well as a wine cellar packed with the very finest Malbecs and other varietals, including the hotel’s own three labels, Marantal Young, Marantal Classic, and Gran Marantal (voted one of the 20 best Malbecs in 2013 by Descorchados and earning 91 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate).

ACRE (SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO, MEXICO) acrebaja.com Moving north, your focus will turn to nature in the foothills of San José del Cabo. Acre Hotel + Villas is a modern-day sanctuary set on 25 acres of verdant farmland and lush greenery complete with thousands of palms, citrus trees, cacti, and agave plants. This is the ultimate Baja experience. Twelve treehouses nestled throughout the property’s gardens allow guests to connect with nature, inducing an overwhelming sense of calm. At Acre’s award-winning farm-totable restaurant, the highly-acclaimed Chef Larby Dahrouch sources 70% of the menu from an on-site working farm. Fruits, vegetables, and herbs mark craft cocktails created by the team from Vancouver’s award-winning Keefer Bar. The expansive property offers a complete guest experience with a zero-edge solar-heated pool, Fausto’s all-day breakfast diner, daily yoga, a jogging/biking trail, bocce court, and a new art and movement academy. But, it’s okay to keep your distance and that’s what you get when you check into Flemings Mayfair. CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP By R Couri Hay

R. Couri Hay is the travel editor and society columnist for this magazine. Couri began his career at Andy Warhol’s Interview and he wrote for Town & Country and People. Couri also appears on CNN, PBS, FOX and VH1 commenting on Hollywood. He lives in NYC and Southampton and is the CEO of his own PR firm.

Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, and Charlie Chaplin were regular visitors. Cary Grant, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Bob Hope, Mary Pickford, Jimmy Stewart, and Joan Crawford were among the guests at Hearst’s lavish parties, as were political figures like Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, and Calvin Coolidge, and notables like George Bernard Shaw, P.G. Wodehouse, and Charles Lindbergh. A prolific collector, among Hearst’s valuable treasures, was a trove of furs stored in the basement. Legend has it that Harpo Marx raided the fur vaults late one night, and in the morning, guests were greeted by the sight of the garden statues draped in opulent mink coats.

With the country opening up state by state and international travel a challenge, why not take a road trip to scenic California. While America has no royal family, we do have a real castle. Hearst Castle may have been the dream home of William Randolph Hearst, a wealthy media titan, but it truly is a castle, with 115 gilded rooms, including 38 bedrooms, and over 68,000 square feet in the main house alone. Its fictional stand-in was immortalized as Xanadu in Orson Welles’s 1941 movie Citizen Kane, inspired by Hearst’s life. Yet its true story falls squarely under the category “You can’t make this up.”

HEARST VALUABLE TREASURES Eventually encompassing 250,000 acres, including a functioning ranch and the world’s largest private zoo, Hearst loved to show off the estate on horseback, and these tours were dreaded by his famous guests, many of whom were not comfortable in the saddle. During one long trip, Clark Gable reportedly quipped, “When we get to the next brow of a hill, we’ll see Los Angeles” (L.A. was over 200 miles away). Hearst also loved to organize overnight camping expeditions on the vast grounds; trips so lavish that they required more than a dozen pack mules to carry the supplies, which, in addition to the usual gear, included caviar and Champagne. Perhaps Hearst was the OG of glamping.

COLORFUL HISTORY, HOLLYWOOD HANGOUT Hearst used it as his home, living there with his mistress, the actress Marion Davies, from the Roaring Twenties through 1947. (Hearst was married, but his wife, Millicent, refused to grant him a divorce.) Hearst’s extensive wine cellar was especially popular during the Prohibition years, and he entertained the biggest Hollywood stars of the day. There was a saying in Hollywood that there were two groups of stars: those who had been to Hearst Castle and those who said they had been to Hearst Castle.

GROUNDBREAKING FEMALE ARCHITECT In 1919, Hearst commissioned the architect Julia Morgan to design his castle, originally called La Cuesta Encantada, The Enchanted Hill. San Francisco-based Morgan was the first independent female architect to have her own practice in California, the first woman to study architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and the first female winner of the AIA Gold Medal. The two spent over twenty years building Hearst Castle and its surrounding property and outbuildings, often incorporating

In the 2,500-squarefoot assembly room, four of ten original 16th-century Continence of Scippio tapestries hang on the walls. Only two others are still in existence. The Louvre in Paris has copies. Hearst lived in the castle until 1947 when health problems forced him to move out. He died in 1951, leaving the entire property to Marion Davies, but she returned it to his family for a reported $1. PUBLIC PARK ON CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COAST Located along the Pacific coast on scenic Highway 1 in San Simeon, the castle is midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, about a four-hour trip from either city. Perched on a hill more than a quarter of a mile above the Pacific Ocean, Hearst Castle is open to the public as part of the California State Park system and receives about 700,000 visitors per year. Built into a hilltop, the pool is surrounded by Italianrelief sculptures and Greco-Roman-style marble colonnades. The indoor Roman Pool has been dubbed the “most sumptuous swimming pool on earth” for its shimmering blue and gold glass tiles, Greek and Roman statues, and mosaic-tile patterns inspired by a 5th-century mausoleum in Ravenna, Italy. ARTWORKS Hearst purchased a huge number of paintings, sculptures, and antiquities to fill the house, outbuildings, and grounds — and most of his enormous art collection is still there for you to see. The venue today functions basically as a museum. A few highlights include Venus Italica, a sculpture by Antonio Canova, commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte. The delicately detailed statue is considered a masterpiece. A grouping of four sculptures of Sekhmet, the Egyptian war goddess, date from the New Kingdom of Egypt, c.1550–1070 BCE, and are the oldest works of art in the collection. Hearst purchased them at different times from different sources, and Julia Morgan installed them together on an esplanade on the hill.

THE ORCHID VASE A lamp made from a Tiffany Orchid Vase was commissioned by Hearst’s mother, Phoebe Apperson Hearst. The vase, made of silver, won top prizes at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition, and after Phoebe purchased it, she had Tiffany & Co. convert it into a lamp and fabricate a shade. Decorated with enamel orchids, the vase is currently displayed in the visitor center, where you may study it closely. GARDENS & GROUNDS All visitors are encouraged to explore the more than 100 acres surrounding the estate, with its lush gardens overlooking the Pacific Ocean, fountains, and lush plantings. Inspired by Spanish and Portuguese villas, the grounds are laid out to resemble the Alhambra in Spain, and colorful ceramic tile is found throughout.

he Honorable Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson, Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, announced plans to reopen borders and begin welcoming visitors starting on July 22, 2020. Stringent protocols will ensure the safety of everyone’s wellbeing. All hotels, villas, and public spaces will be continuously sanitized to protect guests and workers. The specifics of new protocols will include dress stringent standards, trainings, and personal protective equipment, among other necessary measures. The safety and well-being of the local population and international guests remain the top priority for the Turks and Caicos Islands. As such, the Premier has been vigilant regarding the continued containment of Covid-19 and finalizing new procedures. “We are eager and excited to reopen our borders and safely welcome travelers back to the picturesque Turks and Caicos Islands later this summer,” said Pamela Ewing, the director of tourism for the Turks and Caicos Islands Tourist Board. “In the meantime, we are taking every precaution to ensure the Islands are safe and to enhance the exceptional experience and care afforded by the destination and our world-class hospitality partners. Our intention is to cautiously reboot the tourism sector, laying the foundation for short- and long-term recovery.”

The Turks and Caicos Islands — home to the “World’s Best Beach” — is a coveted five-star luxury vacation destination for leisure, business, and notable guests from around the globe. With nine main islands of about 40 small islands and uninhabited cays, the destination is inherently safe for travel in this new paradigm of physical distancing, given its expansiveness, stunning outdoor environment, privacy, spacious resort accommodations, and unique portfolio of extraordinary private villas and private island vacations. Further, the Turks and Caicos Islands’ airline partners have confirmed flight service will resume from within the United States, Canada, and Europe as soon as the destination is ready. Private jet terminals will open on July 22 in conjunction with the reopening of Providenciales International Airport. The Grand Turk Cruise Center will remain closed until August 31, 2020 subject to guidance from relevant health authorities. The Turks and Caicos Island Tourist Board encourages travelers to consider the vacation destination as they plan vacations for late July 2020 onwards. The Islands’ award-winning hotels and resorts, private villas, restaurants and bars, and tour operators are simultaneously finalizing protocols and gearing up to accept bookings for upcoming trips to the destination. LIZZIE ASHER THE CURA COLLECTIVE VIRTUAL CHARITY GIVES CARE TO “THE CARERS” By Elizabeth Elston

Mercedes de Guardiola, Casey Kohlberg, Laura Day-Webb, Lizzie Asher

The parties are on pause, but quarantine hasn’t stopped the giving. Young philanthropist, activist, and entrepreneur Elizabeth “Lizzie” Asher has announced the launch of her new non-profit, The Cura Collective. Founded by Lizzie and four close friends, this virtual charitable organization, which aims to help communities rebuild in the wake of major disasters, is working to care for those who are on the front lines of caring for others during the Covid-19 pandemic. “We are driven by a belief that the most powerful care is given by the people and communities around us,” says Lizzie. “That’s why it’s so important to be compassionate and donate resources during this difficult time.” The Cura Collective has already come to the aid of medical professionals who are caring for the sick in New York City hospitals. Lizzie — along with Mercedes de Guardiola, Casey Kohlberg, Laura Day-Webb, and Nora Boyd — worked with local restaurants such as NoMad Kitchen to deliver meals to the ICUs at Columbia University Medical Center, New York Presbyterian, Lenox Hill, and Bellevue. In addition, they have also organized the delivery of over 5,000 toiletries and wellness products to healthcare workers staying in temporary housing, thanks to donations from Oars + Alps and the Peninsula Hotel. That was just the beginning. The group is now working with more restaurants to deliver meals to non-profits working with families in the Bronx that have been particularly hard hit during the

shutdown. These families have disproportionately shouldered the burden of unemployment, and many of these children have lost the benefit of their school meals. As the efforts grow, Lizzie says that The Cura Collective will build “sustainable and scalable programs to support frontline efforts during the pandemic.” Lizzie, a Peruvian-born, Harvard Law School graduate who is a well-known figure on New York’s philanthropic scene, says that she is on a mission to “redefine giving for a new generation.” Inspired by the strong women in her family and professional life, she relaunched the Young Friends of Save Venice, which helps to restore and preserve the historical artworks and architecture of Venice, Italy. Last year, Lizzie co-hosted the Parrish Art Museum’s Annual Midsummer After Party and was part of the benefit committee of the Frick’s Young Fellows Ball and New York Botanical Garden Winter Wonderland Ball. She also supports various other charities, such as the Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation’s Angel Ball, the White Cross Ball of New York, and the Squash Education Alliance (SEA) 25th Anniversary Gala. She recently spoke to female graduates of Harvard on the topic of work/life balance for the university’s 65th anniversary of admitting female students. With her husband, Daniel Ezra, Lizzie leads a private endowment that raises money for the Asher-Ezra Scholarship Fund — part of the non-profit City Squash. The scholarship provides financial aid to underprivileged Latino children in the Bronx and Brooklyn who excel at squash. curacollective.org Social Life

CHAD CASCADDEN THE ART OF THE GAME, FROM THE NFL TO FINANCE

Photography by Doug Kuntz

By Rolise Rachel

“Visualization is the key to my success. My superpower. I see things on the field or the boardroom, then I make it happen,” says Chad Cascadden, a former NFL player turned finance executive. Cascadden, a Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, native has used this specialized skill as a guide to propel him throughout his entire life. When football was his enormous passion during high school, college, and an NFL football career, he successfully tapped into this superpower and turned whatever looked like a long shot into a full-fledged winner. And after the roar of the crowd died down, he was able to use this gift once again and adapt to the difficult terrain of the New York financial world. Cascadden has a knack for being in the right place at the right time and turning failure into success. After winning a high school championship under Chuck Raykovich, he then played for the University of Wisconsin, where he was an integral to the 1993 Big Ten Championship and 1994 Rose Bowl Championship teams under the College Football Hall of Fame coach Barry Alvarez. It was the first time for the Badgers to make it to the Rose Bowl since 1963. The following year the Badgers defeated Duke 34-20 in the Hall of Fame Bowl. Accolades poured in as he was named Special Teams Player of the Year, Academic All-Big Ten, and given the Milwaukee Journal Russ Winnie award for best representing the studentathlete at Wisconsin. An undersized linebacker at 6'1'' and 235 lbs, Cascadden was discovered by NFL scouts running 4.46 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the Badger’s workout. He signed with the New York

Jets as an undrafted free agent in 1995. After being named NFL Rookie Special Teams Player of the Year in his first year, his role as a linebacker was expanded in subsequent years to a pass-rushing specialist under Bill Parcells’ direction and ultimately became an integral part to Bill Belichick’s complicated and pressuring defense. Turning the program around in 1998, the Jets reached the AFC Championship game but lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champions, the Denver Broncos, and in 1999 saw the departure of both Parcells and Belichick from the Jets. Belichick signed Cascadden to the Patriots in 2000 but Cascadden’s vision for himself changed, and he chose to retire before the season began. After leaving the NFL, Cascadden turned his focus toward the business world and for the last 20 years has been working for world-renowned insurance brokers and ultimately the merchant-banking world with ParkWest Advisors. Cascadden’s focus is on originating deals raising capital both domestically and abroad for middle-market debt investing. He also assists former athletes with their transition from the sports world into the business world with actual placement and is a highly sought after motivational speaker and MC. Cascadden’s free time is spent with his four boys, Jack, Blake, Luke, and Reid. He can also be found on the golf course, SportsNet New York (SNY) as a Jets analyst, speaking professionally, or working with local charities. u For public speaking, please contact Chad Cascadden via rr@myhamptonsguide.com Social Life

LEESA ROWLAND ACTRESS, ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST, AND AUTHOR By Elizabeth Darwen

Leesa Rowland, Photography by Sylvia Hoke

M

ost acclaimed actors have interesting backgrounds, but few are as unique and wide-ranging as cult film star and philanthropist Leesa Rowland. The daughter of an artist and college professor, Leesa grew up in Austin, Texas, where she studied broadcast journalism and later became a classically trained actress at the world-renowned Steller Adler Studio in Los Angeles. Shortly after graduation, she quickly gained a following after being cast as Victoria in Troma Entertainment’s 1992 cult film classic Class of Nuke ’Em High Parts 2 and 3 and appearing in the sequel Return To Nuke ’Em High, which aired on The Starz Network in 2013. SocialLifeMagazine.com

In 1994 she acted in Troma’s television USA Network series Troma’s Edge along with Lloyd Kaufman and Debbie Rochon. Then, in 2012, she co-starred in Travis Campbell’s Slaughter Daughter as Phyllis Adjani, an eccentric mother who drives her daughter to insanity. Not only did the film win the award for best feature at Orlando’s 7th Annual Freak Show Film Festival that same year, it led to a co-starring role in the critically acclaimed web series Two City Girls, as well as appearances on the Oxygen reality series Jersey Couture in 2012. Beyond her extensive career and credits as a film and television actress, Leesa is the author of the best-selling self-help/ motivational book Discovering the It Factor Within You: Developing Your Charismatic Personality, which was published in 2015. She is also well known for her work as a philanthropist and animal rights activist. A vegan dedicated to healthy eating, she has been active with the national non-profit organization Last Chance for Animals, since 1989, and is the president of the New York non-profit group Animal Ashram, which she founded in 2013. Leesa continues to develop her work as a philanthropist and involvement with these and other charities while exploring new dramatic roles and is writing an as-yet-titled sequel to Discovering the It Factor. She also recently began adding something else exciting to her sizzle reel: comedienne. A lifelong sitcom fan, she has been taking comedy classes in Los Angeles with Richard Kline — the actor best known as Larry on the late-1970s classic Three’s Company, co-starring John Ritter, Suzanne Somers, and Don Knotts, which originally ran on ABC from 1977 to 1984. She has also been studying improv and sketch comedy in New York at the famed Upright Citizen’s Brigade, whose alumni include Amy Poehler, Horatio Sanz, Matt Besser, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts, and Adam McKay. VITAL AGIBALOW CELEBRITY PHOTOGRAPHER AND HENSEL AMBASSADOR By Brady Goodman-Williams

W

hen we imagine editorial and celebrity photo shoots, we think of high intensity, glamour, and many moving pieces. Makeup, hair, and fashion stylists run around with urgency, all under the auspices of a demanding photographer. However, after seeing one special photographer on set with Nigel Barker, Carol Alt, Irina Pantaeva, and Iris Apfel, I can attest that Vital Agibalow truly breaks the mold. As he worked the camera in quick bursts of intensity, he never wiped the professional, yet inviting, halfsmile from his face — and the effects were visible. Most of us hesitate in the face of fame, but Vital’s lighthearted and sensitive demeanor allowed his subjects to open up in ways I had never previously seen. The result? Portraits of each subject’s inner being — comfortable, raw, and vulnerable. I sat down with Vital to learn some more about him and his work. Where are you from? How did you become a photographer? I’m New York-based, but my roots are in Sweden, Russia, and Ukraine. When I was 7, my dad gave me my first camera as a birthday present — a Leica. I fell in love with it. I started taking portraits of the other kids in my neighborhood. There’s something about portrait photography that has clearly inspired me since an early age. By 20, I had started working with local modeling agencies, and I opened my own business when I was 21. How has your photography changed since then? Those were the film days. As a photographer, you couldn’t afford to make a mistake back then. Now everyone shoots digital, so you can see the shot on display, which makes it all so much easier. But I’m proud to say that I started as a film photographer.

Right now, because of word of mouth, I have been doing a lot of physicians’ portraits.

Why does your background in film matter? Well it builds credibility. It makes me more professional than any newbie these days who starts with a digital camera and doesn’t know what it means to shoot slides. You have to be much more accurate when doing so, and this skill enhances my digital photography.

Who was the most challenging designer to shoot? Probably shooting Karl Lagerfeld. Our time in the studio was limited to only 30 minutes, which is a photographer’s worst nightmare! But the resulting portraits from the shoot were so good. He really liked the images, which is huge since he was a photographer himself. My portrait of Karl was published in BELLA magazine and many others, so the hard work paid off.

So I know you love portraits. Why is this your favorite genre? I love working with people and seeing their reaction when they see themselves, sometimes in a whole new way. Bringing out a person’s beauty and charm results in much joy to my subjects and their families. But I do also work with fashion designers, which is a whole different world!

So changing gears a little bit. Do you have any recommendations for others interested in pursuing a career like yours? Do it only if you really enjoy it. Don’t do it for the money, but for the art. You’d be shocked how much money you can make when you prioritize the art first. Social Life

That’s great advice. So what new projects are you working on right now? Where can I see your work? Most recently, I worked with the legendary supermodel Carol Alt for her new show on FNL Network, Carol Alt’s Living Room. But there are some other interesting side projects! Lately I’ve been working with beauty and fashion bloggers like Kate Romanoff. You have a brand partnership with HENSEL, right? Tell me a little about that. HENSEL is a German brand that produces professional lights for photographers. I’ve been the brand ambassador for this company since 2008. I’m using their lights on each and every shoot and I’m proud to promote them in my studio and through my work. Vital Agibalow Instagram: VITALphotoNYC YouTube.com/VITALPHOTO SocialLifeMagazine.com

AUDREY GRUSS HOPE AT HOME By Chris Cameron

S

ome might say that we’re going through dark times, but from where the philanthropist Audrey Gruss is sitting, hope is everywhere. “The weather is sunny and beautiful,” she says looking out over the water from her apartment in Florida — a temporary residence Gruss and her husband Martin are calling home while their house in Palm Beach receives a sophisticated overhaul. “Oh my goodness, we are so fortunate to be down here. We took some of our furniture instead of storing it and Scott Snyder helped decorate. It feels like we are on a boat right in the middle of Lake Worth. It’s uplifting.”

HOPE FOR DEPRESSION RESEARCH FOUNDATION Most important, staying active means that Gruss’s foundation, Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) — the leading depression research organization in the country — is continuing its important work fighting mental health disorders. As a part of that work, she recently launched a new email newsletter called Hope at Home. It’s very relatable,” Gruss says of the free email newsletter, which is accessible via hopefordepression.org. “These are important emails based on the four pillars of good mental health. We’ve had a wonderful response from people. Even when I go pick up sandwiches in town, people come up and thank me for what we are doing.” For the uninitiated, the four pillars are exercise, nutrition, sleep, and mindfulness. Each day, the newsletter focuses on one of these aspects of mental health, accompanied by quotes and input from psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and other experts. “People are very stressed during this pandemic,” says Gruss, a Tufts graduate who was formerly an executive at the textile firm J.P. Stevens and director of advertising at the beauty

brand Elizabeth Arden. “So we’ve created a daily guide filled with healthful advice that will help people build resilience, stay connected, and maintain normalcy. Even for people who do not have mental health issues, during times of natural disaster there is fear, anxiety, and tremendous stress. People who don’t have depression might very well feel depressed at a time like this.” LINCOLN CENTER, FIT, LENNOX HILL, WATERMILL CENTER, MET, MOMA & THE GUGGENHEIM Those who know Gruss will recognize the passion she puts into this work. Since she founded HDRF in 2006, she has been a full-time champion for cutting-edge neuroscience-based research into the prevention of depression and new and bet-

EASING INTO QUARANTINE Although Gruss, — a renowned philanthropist in New York, the Hamptons, and Palm Beach — typically keeps a busy social calendar, she would under normal circumstance be enjoying London society, polo, Ascot, and the Chelsea Flower Show at this time of year. She says that she’s finally begun to ease in to quarantine. I’m at home being a good girl,” she laughs. “Martin and I are watching a lot of Netflix and PBS Masterpiece. The only problem is that you could start to gain weight in quarantine, eating three meals a day and sitting on the sofa. So I’m exercising every day and I’m staying active.”

ter treatments. “I founded HDRF a year after my mother, Hope, passed away,” says Gruss, who is the longest-standing female board member of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, as well as a board member of Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, the FIT Couture Council, the Byrd Hoffman Watermill Center, and a major supporter of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. “My mother had been battling depression most of her life, but never received full relief from her symptoms. So I started to investigate. I discovered that 35 percent of the people who need medication don’t respond to what’s out there. The existing antidepressants that are in broad use are all based on Prozac, which was introduced in 1985. That’s 35 years ago! Since then there has been no new broadly used category of medication introduced. Our mission is to find new medications and treatments and raise awareness.” HOPE FRAGRANCES INTERNATIONAL Gruss felt that mental health was misunderstood, stigmatized, under-researched, and underfunded. Through her fundraising events, such as the Race of Hope, the Hope Fragrance Collection, and other charitable endeavors, HDRF has been able to invest over $40 million in advanced depression research to date. “We don’t just raise funds,” says Gruss. “We actually created the research program. Our Depression Task Force is a team of the world’s leading neuroscientists, each sharing their research in realtime, instead of waiting years until it is published. They have made some important discoveries, and, as a matter of fact, we are now going into clinical trials in three university hospitals, with a new potential category of anti-depressant. NEW TREATMENT INITIATIVE But big breakthroughs come with big bills. That’s why this May, Gruss launched a new $30 million fund for HDRF’s New Treatment Initiative. “We are making an open call to universities worldwide to find out who is doing the most advanced SocialLifeMagazine.com

and out-of-the-box research for new depression treatments,” she says. “We are going to fund the most promising projects and get them into clinical trials as quickly as possible.” This is just the start. Gruss adds that she is looking to start a matching campaign because “It’s going to take so much more to find new treatments for depression fast. When you realize that 350 million people around the world and 20 million people in the United States suffer from depression,” she says, “and with the great stresses of the pandemic, it becomes so important to find ways to help. If we can move this field forward, we will have done an amazing thing, and I am so proud that HDRF is leading the way with this new initiative.” hopefordepression.org

ATTORNEY ARTHUR AIDALA BIG NAMES HAVE A WAY OF GETTING INTO BIG TROUBLE! By R. Couri Hay

Arthur Aidala, Bill de Blasio. Photography by Waddie Grant.

Marianne Bertuna and Arthur Aidala

CELEBRITY CLIENTS For the last 25 years and as the founding partner of Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins, Arthur Aidala has been the man behind front-page figures like Harvard lawyer Alan Dershowitz, Fox News generalissimo Roger Ailes, New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor, hotelier Vikram Chatwal, hit-man-hiring investor Abraham Hirschfeld, sexting pol Anthony Weiner, and most recently, Harvey Weinstein. With that kind of client list you might assume that Aidala revels in controversy — he certainly has never shied away from it — but that’s not how he sees it. “I’m a criminal defense attorney, it’s what we do,” says Aidala from his Hampton’s home. “It’s the American way. Everyone is entitled to a defense. Whether you are in a Fifth Avenue mansion or with some kid from the neighborhood, it’s just another guy who is in trouble.”

LAW & PUGILISM IN HIS DNA His father was a well-known Manhattan prosecutor with 55 years in criminal law — notably defending key witnesses in the Iran-Contra scandal, Jennifer Lopez (after a nightclub shooting involving Sean Combs), and the terrorists involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing — turned military captain. His grandfather was the legendary boxing judge Artie Aidala, who was in the ring for the 1971 “fight of the century” between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Law and pugilism were in his DNA. “I was born underneath the Verrazano Bridge at Fort Hamilton Army Base,” says Aidala, who now lives just blocks away from his Brooklyn childhood home that is still occupied by his parents. “You could hit a baseball from one house to the other. It’s an Everybody Loves Raymond situation. Back when I was in the District Attorney’s Office, it would be everybody from the chief down to lowly ole me sitting around the table in the back yard exchanging war stories. My mom would make the big Italian meal. She would be doling out pasta, my dad pouring the vino. It was an unbelievable education.” Aidala describes those times “as some of the greatest in his life,” which explains perhaps why he decided to remain in his neighborhood for so long — despite his father’s desire for him to join his Manhattan practice. After four years with the District Attorney, Aidala ran for a seat on the City Council, and when he lost (by a handful of votes), he opened his own neighborhood law office. “Everyone there knew me,” he says. “Nobody in Manhattan knew me. So I did it in Brooklyn. My dad wasn’t happy about that.”

BROOKLYN DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE Aidala came up at a low point for New York City. When he graduated from CUNY Law School and joined the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office in 1993, the city was experiencing historic levels of crime. “That stunk for all of us New Yorkers,” he says, “but for someone who wanted courtroom experience in criminal law, it really was the best time in the history of the city to be practicing as a criminal prosecutor.” Within a month of being sworn in, he found himself picking a jury on an attempted murder case. “Nowadays, it would take three years to get that type of case,” he says. “It was insane by today’s standards, but at that time it was a necessity. Crime was through the roof and there weren’t enough prosecutors to handle all the cases. We were the beneficiaries.”

FOX NEWS LEGAL COMMENTATOR Aidala stayed in Brooklyn for a decade before ultimately making the leap across the East River to his father’s firm. It was during that time that Aidala became a regular legal commentator on Fox News, eventually being hired as a contributor. “I went from being there once a week, to being there four or five days a week,” he says of his 12-year stint at News Corp headquarters — during which time he founded his current firm with his wife, Marianne Bertuna. “It became a big part of my life. It was wonderful fun and it gave me name recognition. And in 2016, when Roger Ailes was served with papers, he called me.” Aidala says he was surprised by the call. He had made close friends with Fox friends like Geraldo Rivera and Shep Smith, but he didn’t have a particularly close relationship with Ailes. “He called and said, ‘They’re coming after me. I need a great lawyer’,” Aidala recalls. “A month later they bought out Roger and that was the end of my time at the Fox News channel. It was kind of a cool way to go. HELPING OUT DURING THE PANDEMIC Today, with the Weinstein case tried and put away, Aidala is finally enjoying some much-needed rest and relaxation. An avid cook who eschews recipes, he loves making meals for his family — “to my wife’s chagrin,” he laughs. He’s even SocialLifeMagazine.com

getting some downtime by the water in Hampton Bays, the spot where he plans to someday retire. “Before the pandemic, I don’t think I had spent more than six consecutive nights at my home in the Hamptons,” he says. “Now I’ve been here for six weeks. But not even a pandemic can bring Aidala to a complete halt. When Aidala saw what his sister-in-law, an emergency room doctor at Lennox Hill, was going through, he says that he sprang into action — just like he would for a client. “She is in the thick of it,” he says. “I mean she is swimming in coronavirus. She was down to one mask and one gown for a 14-hour shift. She was in bad shape. I called a friend in the Catholic Church and said, ‘Listen, we are going to the city and we are going to light it up with the flashers on the SUVs, we are going to make a lot of noise applauding for them, and we are going to bring them food. I called my pizzerias and we loaded up gurneys full of food: pizza, shrimp cocktail, lasagna, baked clams, and all kinds of stuff. A lot of people called me a moron for going into an emergency room right now, but that’s the kind of guy I am. You don’t run away from a fellow human being in their time of need, you run towards them.”
