PUBLISHER’S LETTER

June in the Hamptons is a great time. It gives you a chance to enjoy yourself before the big summer rush in July and August. Some New Yorkers shun the Hamptons during June, thinking it’s too cold, but I think they’re missing out. June weather is just fine, with many beautiful days to spend at the beach and pursue the outdoor activities available here. Getting away each weekend makes your summer longer, giving you extra weeks to refresh and do the things you enjoy the most. The most exciting social happening in June and July is Polo Hamptons, happening on June 29 and July 6. On Saturday, June 29, Christie Brinkley will kickoff Polo Hamptons, a polo match and cocktail party in Bridgehampton. This will be the pinnacle event of the summer and I recommend attending. For more information go to polohamptons.com In addition to Polo, a full array of events will occur throughout the month. Because summer weekends are limited, and there’s so much to do, it’s important to plan your time so that you really get to enjoy each day you spend out East. My advice is to limit your weekend time in the digital world. Look at your phone only twice per day over the weekend, and disconnect from social media and texting. Make your plan for the weekend and stick to it! With July Fourth approaching fast, put the brakes on your busy life and spend some long weekends in the Hamptons . . . before summer is over! LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

I wish that I could bottle summer like a wine — but as with many entrancing things, these sun-filled days that instill in us a feeling of fearlessness and possibility, are fleeting. As Ferris Bueller says, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” But what does it mean to pause and take it all in? Personally I think it means taking silent moments to stop and think. Reflection is important. I think the real allure of this idyllic place is the opportunity it offers us to take a break from the daily grind of routine. During these pauses we are freed to soak everything in — surroundings, others, ourselves — and truly reflect. Many times, the physical act of going for a long walk allows me to roam to the depths of my mind. And I think that’s the secret . . . taking the time to stay centered as a means of recharging. It’s not the place that recharges us; we recharge ourselves. But the place — this place — is so uniquely perfect at creating the right set of circumstances to do so. The freedom to leisurely muse is a necessary component to reenergizing. Everyone has a need for rejuvenation — whether through reaching momentary inner peace within a hectic life or soulsearching. It’s creating an internal balance, your own brand of silence and self- knowledge. Balance is present when what you feel and avow to be true corresponds to what you do. It’s a throughline between your head, heart, and actions. Sometimes routine, the conflicting messages of a society obsessed with pop culture, or the stereotypes ingrained in our subconscious can disrupt that balance or even make it difficult to obtain in the first place. And that’s why it’s so important to travel to places that allow us to journey within and replenish the waters of our souls. Enjoy this weekend. Wishing you peace and happiness. With love,

Devorah Rose

ANNA BECK DESIGNS HANDCRAFTED WITH BALINESE LOVE By Blaire Bass

Becky Hosmer in Bali workshop

W

e searched high and low for our favorite summer accessories and fell head-overheels in love with Anna Beck Designs. Simply gorgeous rings, necklaces, and bracelets — both elegant and innovative — our recommended must-have adornments of the season. The Anna Beck design philosophy began out of love and deep appreciation for Bali, experienced by Anna Beck’s founder and designer, Becky Hosmer. One-of-a-kind jewelry always feels special, but Anna Beck takes this concept to a new level. The unique designs are 100 percent handcrafted in Bali, where traditional Balinese jewelry techniques are used by skilled artisans who create each piece by hand, sometimes taking up to three days to make. In the spirit of local tradition, each piece is blessed with a Balinese offering of love and gratitude. This is Anna Beck’s gift to you, and your gift to yourself and others. We just love this! Anna Beck inspires each person wearing something from the collections to feel the essence of Bali, which is all about balance, love, and connection. Anna Beck Designs is available at annabeck.com. This summer a special curated collection can be found at the Pigment Collective at 38 Main Street in Southampton.

CREATIVE GENIUS Born with a heart to wander, Becky Hosmer, the founder and CEO of Anna Beck, discovered Bali on her travels and immediately fell in love. From a young age, Becky always had a creative eye, a kind heart, and an evolving passion for travel and culture. Upon graduating from Boston University, Becky traveled to Bali, Indonesia, where she discovered a local artisan who was making beautiful handcrafted jewelry. Not only was she captivated by SocialLifeMagazine.com

Indonesian culture and traditions, but she also was surrounded by skilled artisans and creative energy. Working with local smiths and using centuries-old techniques, she began designing jewelry for friends and family. Upon returning home, Becky shared her jewelry with those around her, offering them a little piece of Balinese culture. Through her love of travel and commitment to service, Becky has organically forged partnerships with organizations and individuals that are making an impact. From the Bumi Sehat Foundation in Indonesia to David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Orphan Project in Kenya to Project Soar in Morocco, she seeks to bring things full circle and build bridges for people from all walks of life. With the release of its charity collections, Anna Beck supports and empowers foundations around the globe, with 30% of sales benefiting each charity from which the designs were inspired.

ore than ever before, our lives are marked by seeking the things that are the most unique. From clothing for our kids to our wedding dresses to the features of our cars to the houses where we choose to live, we want to be intentional and statement-driven. This is nothing new with jewelry — but, finding something that is reflective of our personality is often elusive. “My mother was very concerned about my safety, as mothers are” says emerging designer Nigora Tabayer, who has become known for her luxurious and unique Eye Collection. “But even later in life, I think about this, the meaning of jewelry and what we put on. If I am going somewhere, a wedding, or on a trip, even out to dinner, I decided: why not design something that combines luxury with important meaning?” Tabayer, who was raised in a dynamic and artistic household, says that the wildly sought-after Collection, which is inspired by the “eye,” represents a powerful symbol of protection. To fête the premiere of the Eye Collection, the designer introduced her limited-edition collection in March at the

Debuting a collection with these heartfelt charms was the first step in showcasing Tabayer’s mantra: her label will always blend wearable ultra-luxury with deep and personal sentiments. To say that the collection is hot is to misread its temperature: it’s scorching, which is evidenced by the number of celebrities and otherwise well-heeled women who are adopting the protective eye for their own wardrobes: Halima Aden, Coco Rocha, Shanina Shaik, Caroline Vreeland, Rebel Wilson, and Jessica Kahawaty are just a few. The collection includes pendants, bracelets, and more. All Nigora Tabayer pieces are made to order; pricing is available upon request and starts at $20,000 and up.

Summer Skincare Rules

Y

ou may welcome blazing sun after a New York winter, but, remember, with the sun comes humidity, damaging UV rays, skin problems, and more. I sat down with Dr. Gerald Imber, an internationally acclaimed plastic surgeon and the director of NYC’s Youth Corridor Clinic, to get his summer skincare rules and must-follow tips. What is the most important skincare tip you can give our readers? Sunblock, sunblock, sunblock. SPF 30 blocks 96% of the damaging rays, while SPF 50 blocks 97% of the damaging rays. Formulating higher SPF often detracts from the elegance of the preparation, and hence less pleasant to use. Find a SPF 30 that you like and apply it every half hour while in the sun. Jeanette’s Beauty Tip: Antioxidants are key to your summer skincare routine; so rotating and layering the serums you use for day and night, and weekly, is a good idea. The Fresh Crème Ancienne Supreme Face Serum is packed with nine exotic root and botanical extracts that are handmade in a monastery to preserve these precious ingredients. Sephora, $245 How should we change our skincare regimen in the summer? Summer means humidity; therefore, less moisturizer is necessary. If you are using a heavy moisturizer, switch to a lighter formula. Start the day with a vitamin C serum and sunblock for protection. Vitamin C serum improves sun damage and it also protects skin from further sun damage and should be the first product applied in the morning. Our Youth Corridor Ultimate Antioxidant C Boost Serum (net-a-porter.com, $195) is one of the best. A good moisturizer and SPF 30 should follow this. SocialLifeMagazine.com

In the evening, you need to double cleanse your skin to remove debris, SPF, and any other build-up from the day. Follow with a retinoid product. Retinoids are a derivative of vitamin A and have been proven to encourage skin cell turnover, making them perfect for the treatment of aging skin. Retinol is typically irritating and sun sensitive, but the Youth Corridor Retinultimate Transforming Gel, (net-a-porter.com, $450) is unique in that it is a form of vitamin A, yet non-irritating. Follow with moisturizer. Which treatments do you recommend to start post summer? Summer is really about maintenance treatments and fall is about correction. Initially, I’d recommend microneedling in combination with platelet-rich plasma or radio frequency. These treatments disrupt the skin’s superficial damage while also encouraging skin-cell renewal on a deeper level within the dermis. These are comprehensive treatments that target most areas of concern, like fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, skin texture.

OPTIMAL HEALTH IS THE BEST INSURANCE By L. A. Dawson

or most people, health insurance entails deductibles (sometimes quite high) and co-pays. Then there is the common problem of having to fight to get a procedure, treatment, or drug covered. With catastrophic illnesses, these payments can ruin lives. People sometimes seek out alternative care to try to reclaim their health, which adds to their growing debt. Therefore, the key to optimal health is ongoing preventive care. There is a myriad of conflicting information that either favors or denies the benefits of every diet, vitamin, or health craze. Doctors and nutritionists argue impressively about both sides. Many of us have tried various paths to find optimal health. My response to this debate is to share what I have learned on my personal journey to health. Writing wellness articles from research and experience has led to my current studies in health and life coaching. The hope, and hidden gem, is that health and life coaching can help fill the gap in clients’ health journeys.

Eating well can often negate the need to spend time fighting insurance companies. A health coach can guide you away from unhealthy habits. Small steps can reap big results. And when we’re feeling successful we want to continue to achieve positive results. Health is forever and is a mind, body, and spirit connection. If we tell our body to get in line with what our brain tells it, i.e. “Body you are perfectly healthy,” studies show this has a positive impact on health. For my personal path, I choose life and health with a preventive mindset. I am pleased to announce Live and Heal Health and Life Coaching. Please join me on my odyssey of accountability to self, replacing bad habits with good ones, and taking small steps that successfully address health and life challenges. u Follow my journey (Instagram @authorladawson, FB @AuthorLADawson, and on liveandheal.com) to learn, motivate, and help one another be accountable to claiming our optimal health! BEST IN FITNESS — EPULSE A 90-MINUTE WORKOUT IN 20 MINUTES, YES, PLEASE! By Cecilia Bloom

I

t all started when a world-renowned opera singer was appearing in a premiere of Philip Glass’s opera Akhnaten, at London’s largest theater. And he found out he had to be . . . completely naked! We kid you not. He had only six weeks to get into the best shape of his life — the kind of shape where you’d be OK with 20,000 people seeing you naked. No one he knew could steer him to a trainer who could help him achieve his goals that fast . . . simply put: he was desperate. That’s when he discovered EMS — electronic muscle stimulation, a new fitness technology that’s taken Europe by storm, but has barely made an appearance in the U.S. until now. Doing just two, 20-minute sessions per week, our opera singer was shocked at how much better he looked and felt, and at how much fun the workout was. After just six weeks, his body was transformed: stronger, more defined, with less fat, and noticeably tighter skin where before it had sagged. He had the confidence and physique to strut his now-fine nude self onto that stage, break stereotypes about opera singers, and blow the audience away. He was amazed, he was hooked, and he didn’t want to be without EMS ever again. An entrepreneur was born. After several years of asking questions, learning everything, researching technology, technique, and top practitioners, he formed a partnership with the renowned trainer, Mario Kaspers, and they put in place an expert team. SocialLifeMagazine.com

EPULSE FITNESS was born. Now we know that sending an electric current through your muscles while you work out might sound scary, but in fact, there’s no shock, no sting, and no pain. EMS has been used in this country for years in rehabilitative physical therapy. It’s completely safe. FDA-cleared, it’s effective, and it’s so fun for toning. We can’t even tell you how fun. The EPULSE method simply incorporates EMS into a dynamic and efficient workout. Because the electricity amplifies the impact of every move you make, 20 minutes of this workout equals 90 minutes at the gym. It can be used for weight loss, toning, building muscle, and the electricity even has the ability to firm skin (bye, cellulite!). The best part? It costs less than many personal trainers. A recent article in the New York Post called it a workout for billionaires and royals. Check it out! EPULSE FITNESS epulsefitness.com

WORKING OUT IN THE HAMPTONS By Stacey Griffith Founding instructor of Soul Cycle, Best-Selling Author and Podcast Co-Host of THE WAY

T

here may be a chance that this summer you are searching for a new routine, a new pattern, a new you. Your kids may have decided to go to camp after all, or they are grown and aren’t even home all summer because they just graduated from college and are backpacking or working already. Or, this may be your first summer in the Hamptons ever, and you don’t even know where to begin. Let’s just first start with your intention. Yeah, that’s right, your intention. What do you want for yourself from this summer in the Hamptons? I think the summer brings out the best in all of us as it’s the season of healthier eating, local farmer bliss, outdoor meals, and the best part, I think, is longer days. I have to say, after spending fifteen summers here in a row, I think I have it down, but then again, I may be the wrong person to ask about the best nightlife, the best place to eat, or the best babysitter to hire. However, I do know the fitness scene quite well and all of the political dynamics that go with it. If you want to make the most of the Hamptons on a physical level, I have some great suggestions for where to start. This has to be a politically correct article, so as to not offend the community of my fitness industry, I’ll go light on some things. Just know that it is always my suggestion for people to try everything that interests them and blend the things that make them happy. If someone tells you, “Don’t train anywhere else but [fill in the blank],” I worry that you might choose a place that may not be right for you, and potentially rob you of your best self. If there is something in fitness you want to add to your weekly routine because it makes your head clear, I say do it. Just understand that a lot of times you can unwind the work a trainer/instructor is doing for your body by training on another machine that will change the outcome of the way you look. If you aren’t trying to be a professional something or other, and you simply just want to feel amazing, then you should do the things that make you feel amazing. The Hamptons offers so many variations of workouts, as well as strengthen and lengthen studios like LYMBR inside of SoulCycle Bridgehampton. There are boxing studios, pilates studios, hot yoga, and if you want to hire a trainer to get in some one-on-one strength time, local gyms in Southampton, Sag Harbor, and Wainscott offer summertime memberships! the beach early mornings (in sneakers) and buying or renting a bike at Sag Harbor Cycle and going on rides with family and friends are hidden workouts waiting to happen, too. Whatever you do, have fun doing it, because at the end of the day, you’ll stay committed to something if you are having fun. Remember, no devices measure serotonin or dopamine levels (yet), and those two chemicals, my friends, are your secret weapons of exercise.

15 TIPS FOR AVOIDING BEACH BLOAT By Kristy Rao digestive process. Diet sodas are a double-whammy because they are also highly carbonated. These beverages can cause a buildup of air that moves down the digestive tract and into the colon, causing bloating and gas.

7

Stay clear of packaged and processed foods. They are difficult to digest and contain all types of sneaky ingredients that interfere with digestion.

8 9 10

Avoid snacking, especially late at night.

Stick with lean protein and non-starchy veggies for dinner. You’ll thank me in the morning.

S

ummer is in full swing, and we all want to look our best at the beach. Unfortunately, bloat can hide even the most chiseled abs. But bloat can be prevented by what we eat and how we eat. Here are my top tips to prevent beach bloat:

1

Avoid salty foods. This is especially important late at night or in the morning before you hit the beach! Salt causes some major water retention that leads to bloating.

2

Take a probiotic supplement. They can help improve the bacterial environment in the gut, which also helps reduce symptoms of gas and bloating.

3 4 5

Pop a digestive enzyme. A good time is before bedtime and before a big meal. Drink lemon water first thing in the morning. It will kickstart the digestive system.

Start your day off with the right breakfast. Lay off the bread. It will give you a “food baby.” Instead, have a vegan smoothie, Greek yogurt, vegetable omelet, or chia-seed pudding.

6

Skip the sugar-free gum and sodas. They include artificial sweeteners, which are not fully absorbable during the

Slow down your eating. Take a few deep breaths to calm yourself before you eat, and you will notice a big difference in your digestion. Focusing on the act of eating allows your body to release stomach acid and digestive enzymes, which are the first hit of chemical digestion. If you’re distracted or stressed, your body doesn’t totally clue in to the fact that you’re eating, so the chemicals required for digestion won’t be released in time. Inefficiently digested foods are a major trigger for bloating.

11 12 13

Drink plenty of water. Add one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to it for improved digestion. Save the beans and legumes for a day sans the beach.

Eat enough fiber. Constipation causes bloat. Choose vegetables, gluten-free grains, and berries over any cereal or packaged product.

14 15

Exercise portion control. What good is eating the right food if you eat too much of it? Walk it off. Physical activity helps air bubbles pass through your digestive tract quicker.

These tips will help you combat bloat this summer, but it doesn’t have to stop there. Use them year-round to optimize digestion. Kristy Rao kristyraohealth.com Social Life

DR . MICHELLE ZWEIFLER MAKING CONNECTIONS By Jacob Puck r. Michelle Zweifler does it all when it comes to making both men and women feel beautiful . . . or, in some cases, whole again. She notes that where she gets true satisfaction as a preeminent Manhattan plastic surgeon is breast augmentation and various other body procedures. In terms of the former, she is regaled as one of the best. “Performing breast augmentation represents instant gratification for many of my clients, and in many cases, that’s why they come to me. They want enhancement, and my job is to deliver it,” she says, with the caveat that, although she loves bodywork, she also derives gratification from the expert procedures she does from the neck up. “I also love working on face-lifts, helping get people to a place where they once were or always wanted to be,” she says. “People come to me and say that they want to look like themselves, not like their aging mother! I think that’s a reasonable expectation, and my job is to help them get as close to their goal as possible.” Dr. Zweifler is a standout in her field. She has a prominent presence in the media and the medical community and has published professional papers in leading scientific journals including Annals of Plastic Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Surgical Endoscopy. In recent years, Dr. Zweifler has been featured in the New York Times, New York Magazine, New York Post, CNN, Fox News, Eyewitness News 7, WB11, CNN Headline News, and NY1. Dr. Zweifler is included in Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors and Castle Connolly’s America’s Cosmetic Doctors and Dentists. Dr. Zweifler’s skill as a plastic surgeon is matched by her warmth and sense of humor. “I think it’s important for my patients to really get to know my practice and me,” says Dr. Zweifler. She points to her frequently updated social media sites as a peek into what patients can expect from her. “My plastic surgery videos educate patients about procedures and they get a sense of my personality.” While she’s not one to disparage any of her peers, she does think that being a woman (in what is definitely a man’s world), gives her a unique perspective on the surgeries she performs. “I think a lot of clients “Performing breast augmenta- know that I can identify with them. KYLE RICHARDS FOREVER HOLLYWOOD By Christine Montanti Photography By Mike Ruiz

From the moment you meet Kyle Richards, you are captivated by her presence. Her glamorous Hollywood beauty, radiant personality and sensational career in film and television is so extraordinary, it’s not surprising viewers are enamored with this chic and dynamic star. As an accredited child actress, Kyle’s career exploded at the age of four when she made her debut in Disney’s Escape to Witch Mountain followed by the role of Alicia Sanderson Edwards in the classic family television show, Little House on the Prairie, and later she starred alongside the iconic Betty Davis in the feature film, The Watcher in the Woods. Success for the star of Bravo’s unscripted reality series, Real House Wives of Beverly Hills is not only limited to her acting abilities as she has appeared in over 100 TV shows and films, but is also due to her other unprecedented accomplishments: executive producer, entrepreneur, author, and philanthropist. With several other creative projects in the works, the fan favorite of RHOBH currently stars in the 9th Season of the hit TV show vigorously balancing career and family, demonstrating she is a passionately driven woman controlling her own destiny. The American actress was the first television personality to be cast on Bravo’s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, the reality show about affluent women enjoying lavish lifestyles. On the 9th season of the unscripted series, Kyle Richards explosive argument with Lisa Vanderpump, referred to as the PuppyGate scandal has

SocialLifeMagazine.com

proven to be one of the biggest friendship-ending fights on reality television. The rift between the co-stars stems from an accusation made by other cast members who accused Lisa of leaking a negative story to the press. The damaging tabloid story came out after Dorit Kemsley, fellow co-star, adopted a dog from Vanderpump Dogs and the dog was returned to a kill shelter. No need to worry RHOBH fans, the drama doesn’t seem to be slowing the California native down; her career is rapidly evolving as she uses her innovative ability to develop scripted entertainment. In 2018, Richards stepped behind the camera to create and co-executive produce the television series, American Woman starring an incredible line up of talent: Alicia Silverstone, Mena Suvari, and Jennifer Bartles. The Paramount Network drama is a period piece inspired by Kyle’s life growing up in the 70’s and centers on Kyle’s strong single mother raising her daughters in Los Angeles. With the addition of her mother’s friends, the show sends an authentic message about issues women faced in that era concerning relationships, their struggle to be independent, and the desire to have a stronger presence in the workplace. The emerging network producer currently has two additional projects in development at both ABC and Bravo leaving audiences and peers fascinated and eagerly waiting to see what’s happening next for this talented actress. Aunt to Paris and Nicky Hilton, Kyle was accustomed to being

in the limelight and was raised by her ambitious mother Kathleen Richards, a stage mom and manager for Kyle and her two sisters, Kim Richards and Kathy Hilton. Kathleen managed her three daughters’ acting and modeling careers full time after she divorced Kyle’s father, Ken Richards. Kyle had a very unconventional upbringing in Los Angeles and admits that acting was not something she wanted to do as a young girl, but rather something her mother ushered her into to overcome her shyness. “It was definitely not something that I wanted to do at that age.” Kyle confesses. “I so badly just wanted to be a normal child that when I wasn’t filming and we were on hiatus, I would borrow my friend’s school uniform and I would wear it on weekends because I really just wanted to be in a normal school, and that was my way of feeling normal.” Today the Real House Wife of Beverly Hills efficiently manages to juggle the demands of motherhood, marriage and her dynamic career, demonstrating that her capabilities are limitless. Kyle is a devoted mother to four beautiful and aspiring daughters spanning two decades in age from 11-31; She had her first daughter Farrah at the age of 19 from a previous marriage. Four years after her divorce, the actress met her second husband, Mauricio Umansky, a real estate mogul and CEO of The Agency. Kyle and Mauricio have three daughters together, Alexia, Sophia, and Portia, and the mom of four is also the proud mommy to five adorable dogs. As to how the reality star’s family feels about filming RHOBH, Kyle reveals, “When I first started the show it was a family discussion to see if they wanted to do this little adventure and everybody said sure! Portia was not even two years old yet, and I had her two year old birthday on the first season. My husband doesn’t mind filming the show. Sometimes the kids will show up and be on camera, but they really aren’t into it. I am actually shy. I am actually an introvert who is living an extrovert life. Now I am so used to filming the show that I don’t even think about it. I am a very open person. You can tell me your darkest secret and I would never tell a soul, but if it’s about me, I can’t keep a secret about myself.” When asked about the challenges balancing both career and family Kyle confesses, “Sometimes I am extremely overwhelmed, but I do well under pressure. I can get more stuff done at 9 in the morning then you could ever imagine. I like being active and you will never see me lying on the sofa watching TV or a movie even if I am sick; it is just not my personality. There is truth to the expression, If you want to get something done give it to someone busy. I have so many balls in the air and I work well like that, but with that said, sometimes it is a lot!” The day of Kyle’s cover shoot is a beautiful spring morning in Beverly Hills. I am seated across from the stunning actress inside the luxurious Beverly Suite of the Sofitel Los Angeles. The view of the world’s most exciting city is remarkable from the urban

resort’s 10th floor suite which has now been converted into our production set. Dressed in a structured, detailed white blouse and high waisted blue slacks, the vibrant producer’s style is sophisticated and chic. The abundant sunlight cascades through the ceiling-high windows creating a soft dreamy light on Kyle’s face as she describes what her childhood was like growing up on the set of Little House on the Praire. “We would wake up at four in the morning when it was pitch black out, and my mom would dress me while I was asleep in the middle of the night. She would carry me to the car and put me in the back seat with a pillow and a blanket; in those days there were no seatbelts. We would arrive in Simi Valley to film as the sun was rising, and when we would reach the set, there were kids and horses; we would catch guppies in the stream and have little picnics outside. It was all a very positive experience!” When we return back to the modish Melrose conference room that is being used as our green room located on the 2nd floor of the Beverly Hills luxury hotel, Kyle reveals to me that it’s strange she is still not speaking to her longtime friend, the only other remaining original housewife on the show. “If Lisa does something wrong, it is very hard for her to own her behavior because she is a perfectionist and wants to be perceived as being perfect all the time.” Kyle’s friendship ended with her costar the moment she was kicked out of the Vanderpump’s home by Lisa and her husband, Ken Todd. When asked if she regrets going to Lisa’s home the day of the epic dispute, Kyle responds, “I don’t regret going there because when the other ladies and I had this conversation, I felt so bad because Lisa wasn’t there. I had to be honest about what was going on, and if I didn’t say anything to Lisa, she would have seen the show in six months and thought everyone was Social Life

She made mistakes as we all do. When we were growing up, my mom said to me, “I didn’t know anything. Your dad handled everything, and then when I got divorced, I had never written a check, I never paid taxes, and I don’t want you girls to ever be like that. I want you girls to take charge of your own lives.” Kyle begins to laugh as she recalls, “When I was on hiatus we would get unemployment checks and my mom would let us keep our checks and put them into our checking accounts and I would have to balance the checks myself! JAMES C. METZGER Thoughts on ACCOUNTING FOR PERSONALITY & NEW YORK HOSPITALITY By Patrick Shannon

The New York businessman James “Jim” Metzger, chairman/CEO and founder of Whitmore, makes it a practice to support his clients’ businesses and philanthropic interests whenever possible. One of the lines in which his insurance company specializes is the hospitality and restaurant market. Really understanding the businesses and their owners, for every market Whitmore services, is a key to his company’s success. “We Promise to Make Insurance Personal” is a cornerstone philosophy for Jim and his employees. Jim manifests this commitment by visiting and buying meals in at least one of his hospitality client’s restaurants almost every day. Working with many of the best fine-dining establishments in the New York metropolitan area, Jim knows and appreciates the great food and exceptional service they provide. Each of these places provides an experience that is individually unique, having what Jim says are “things I look forward to time and again.” Jim describes this uniqueness as “personality.” On the following pages are three steakhouses, two with strong Italian influences, that have their own standout personalities to differentiate their businesses and make them successes.

I

n 1989, Jim founded an insurance brokerage business that would make a difference. His idea for Whitmore was to pick his spots to get noticed and grow by carving out niche markets he could own. Today Whitmore is positioned as one of the top 10 in the region. He started with the funeral service industry. Of the roughly 800 funeral homes in metro-New York, Whitmore writes the policies for 80% of them. Jim hired accomplished specialists and methodically made acquisitions in targeted industries, building his practice to cover real estate, financial services, construction, and transportation, in addition to hospitality. Whitmore offers its clients a full range of insurances: commercial, personal, health, liability, and life. For his Whitmore Hospitality division, he wanted to go beyond traditional insurance offerings. Jim says, “You can get a general business insurance policy for your restaurant from any broker/carrier. Restaurateurs deserve better.” Jim developed an industry-specific

risk management offering that makes an important difference in terms of helping restaurant owners run their businesses better and more profitably over the long run. Jim helps restaurateurs create great places to work for their employees and excellent places to dine for their customers. With select insurance carriers, mezzanine brokers, and data specialists, Jim has created a “Restaurant Plus” product-line to fit the unique needs of each individual hospitality client. Driven by historical and predictive data and technology, these policies help owners develop protocols and procedures that influence and affect the human experience of everyone connected to a restaurant — from every staff member to every customer. He is dedicated to servicing his hospitality clients with the best menu of risk management options available in the marketplace today. whitmoregroup.com Social Life

SOTTO SOPRA Sotto Sopra is as complex as it is elegant. Start with the entrance. Choose to enter from Amagansett’s Main Street and you’ll pass under a friendly, yellow canopy through the front of the restaurant that is invitingly wide open. Enter from the side of this special eatery via a runway red carpet and you’ll find a deceivingly large, modern space with both inside and outdoor dining options. That is just the start of understanding and appreciating the personality and character of this Mediterranean and classic steakhouse-inspired restaurant run by Joseph Smith, the owner of nine Bobby Van’s in Bridgehampton, New York City, and Washington, D.C. The interior of the restaurant is warm and open, accented by cedar-paneled walls and floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides of the building that open to the outdoor patio. Inside, is a remarkable wood-burning oven whose wafting aromas contribute to the unique character of one of Mr. Smith’s newest creations. Joining him for management, day-to-day operations, and the task of delighting customers are his managing partners, Rose Evangelista and Paul Mortimer, first class, longtime pros. The menu simply delivers fine dining that is consistent, fulfilling, and pleasing to the most discerning palates. From antipasto featuring baked clams oreganata, salumi, tuna tartare, shrimp, and lobster cocktails to tri-colore, Caesar, bistecca and caprese insalate, opening courses are bright and indicative of what is to follow. All their pizzas are gourmet, and prepared in the wood-burning oven, as are all their freshly made breads. Among the pasta plates you’d SocialLifeMagazine.com

expect to see, look for spaghettini a la Greco, a favorite, with shrimp, spinach, and spicy arrabbiata sauce. The fish, includJoseph Smith ing some roasted whole in the woodand Jim Metzger burning oven, include Chilean sea bass, lobster, salmon, branzino, and fluke. The Italian carne recipes and classic grill cuts are all to Bobby Van’s highest standards, from USDA Prime grade to preparation and service. As one would expect, the wine list is extensive. Like the nearby ocean tides, this Hamptons dining hotspot has its own, welcoming ebb and flow. Families fill the restaurant from 5 to 7 p.m. for family-style suppers; couples take their spots from 7 to 9 p.m.; and singles file in to close, enjoying the company and a diverse, signature cocktail menu that satisfies the most curious. As for celebrities: yes, many seek Sotto Sopra’s relaxed vibe, personal service, and world-class fare, including Alec Baldwin, Cameron Diaz, Naomi Watts, Mike Myers, John Slattery, Michael Kors, David Yurman, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. For a complex personality, Sotto Sopra is actually pretty easy to understand. Buon appetito. Sotto Sopra restaurantsottosopra.com 231 Main Street Amagansett 631.267.3695

BOBBY VAN’S — 230 PARK AVENUE 230 Park Avenue is on the southeast corner of 46th and Park, a busy and often noisy intersection. Metro-North trains rumble into and out of Grand Central 21 hours a day, carrying almost 300,000 daily riders. Thousands of cars and trucks exit the GCT elevated roadway, thumping metal grates as they hit Park Avenue under the Helmsley Building heading north. Traveling east on 46th Street, thousands more vehicles pass 230 Park, looking for passage south on Lexington, north on Third, or other options as they steer toward the FDR and the East River. Yes, many a conversation has been interrupted outside 230 Park with infamous NYC hustle and bustle. Tucked into this corner under the Helmsley Building is the home of Bobby Van’s 230. When you step inside, you’ve entered a special place with its own sound, vibe, and personality. Under the watchful eye of the restaurateur Ricky Passarelli, everyone in the front of the house moves in concert in a fashion you’ll quickly appreciate and will look forward to every time at 230. At the maître d’ stand you’ll likely find Phil, a native New Yorker, with Bobby Van’s 230 for 22 years. At the coat check-room, there is always the warmest of welcomes from Martha. A Manhattanite, she too has been at Bobby Van’s for a quarter of a century. If a drink at the bar before or after your meal is on the schedule, you’ll find some of New York’s finest veteran bartenders: Dennis Fitzgerald and Tony Brennan, whose combined service is 40 years. Enjoy a great drink, glass of wine, or ice-cold beer — a story and a laugh, no extra charge. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Into the dining room and now center stage. The hum, rhythm, and flow of waiters and servers are precise and comfortRicky Passarelli ing. Regulars often don’t ask for menus. The recital of specials makes you smile and the wine list impresses. Taking a menu is always fun but can be confusing because the thought of ordering one of each item passes through your mind. Is the food good? No. It’s great, it’s classic. From appetizers such as lump crabmeat cocktail, beef carpaccio, and baked clams oreganata to salad favorites such as steakhouse wedges, fresh mozzarella and tomato, and the Harry salad; and what you really come for, the best USDA Prime-grade and aged steaks, lamb, pork, and veal . . . and seafood main courses, including three-pound Maine lobsters, broiled scallops, and Chilean sea bass. There’s more. When you leave Bobby Van’s 230, take a few steps toward Grand Central and on your left you’ll see Lea Wine Bar. Here you’ll find Lenny, Harry, or John at the door, all pros from BV’s. This place has all its own moves: chic, casual, and serving tapas, sushi, wine, and cocktails. A great evening scene too. There’s a lot to make noise about at 230 Park. Check it out.

THE SOUTHAMPTON VILLAGE VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE By Jean Shafiroff Photography by Daniel Gonzalez JEAN SHAFIROFF INTERVIEWS CHRISTOPHER EPLEY, CHIEF OF SOUTHAMPTON VILLAGE VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE, ABOUT THE BUILDING OF ITS NEW HEADQUARTERS

T

Why do we need a new ambulance building? About 15 years ago, the Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance operated two ambulances with twenty volunteer members who responded to approximately 400 calls per year. Today, we have three advanced life support (ALS)-equipped ambulances, 66 volunteer members, including ALS first responders, and four part-time paramedics. We are on call 24 hours a day. In 2018, we received 800 emergency calls and this year we expect a similar number. We also have a large-scale incident/rehabilitation trailer, multiple first-response vehicles, and a beach-rescue utility vehicle. The old ambulance building on Meeting House Lane is not only showing signs of age, but it no longer provides enough space to sufficiently house all of the equipment, volunteer members, and paid staff. What is your favorite aspect of the new headquarters? I am most excited about the training room. As a firm believer in practice makes perfect, I know that having a space for hands-on training will be extremely beneficial to everyone,

he Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance (SVVA) provides 24-hour emergency care and transport of sick and injured people in the Village of Southampton. These services are also provided beyond the village boundaries at the request of town, county, state, or federal agencies. In addition to providing emergency care, the SVVA also offers a community CPR program. The SVVA is now building a much-needed new headquarters on Windmill Lane in Southampton.

including our future patients. In addition, the increased size of the headquarters will enable us to host several community classes. It will provide enough space for all of our volunteer members to attend our monthly meetings. What do you think the volunteer members will enjoy most? Our volunteer members are most in need of a bunk room and an on-call room. Every night we have between two to four volunteers sleeping on pleather coaches for their overnight duty. The volunteers must be ready to respond at a moment’s notice and so a proper place to sleep would certainly be of help. Our members also stay at the headquarters while they study and train for the job. A proper on-call room would create an ideal space for strong team bonding. Most of our emergency medical services relies on teamwork. Tell us about your members. What kind of people are they? The members of the SVVA are all volunteers. They are a diverse group of individuals who come from all different backgrounds. We have high school and college students, engineers, writers, landscapers, electricians, nurses, police officers, teachers, and retired individuals, all with a common bond for the love of this community and a strong will to help people. When do you expect to move into the new building? What else needs to be done? We are hoping to move at the end of 2019. Since breaking SocialLifeMagazine.com

ground, the construction has progressed smoothly, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. We are also currently fundraising to supply furnishings such as desks, tables, shelves, storage lockers, and other necessary items. Are you holding any fundraising events in the future? How can people donate? We are hosting a cocktail party on September 27th at the Southampton Arts Center. However, we hope to have the majority of the fundraising work done before the event. We are asking local businesses and members of our community to donate via our web site: villageems.org/newhq or contact us at 631.287.0558.

PAWS NY 2019 ANNUAL SPRING BENEFIT Over 175 people came together at PAWS NY’s 2019 annual spring benefit on April 2 to celebrate and raise funds and awareness for people and pets in need. Approximately $50,000 was raised through ticket sales, donations, and a silent auction. PAWS NY raised funds for programs to continue helping low-income seniors and individuals struggling with an illness or disability to keep their pets, which are often their sole companions, and provide muchneeded comfort. Thanks to the generosity of the community, partners, volunteers, and sponsors, PAWS NY will be able to continue protecting these special bonds in 2019 and beyond. 2019 IRISH EYES GALA The Kelly Cares Foundation honored Minnesota Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph and the Silver Shield Foundation at its annual Irish Eyes gala on May 20 at The Pierre. Established by Notre Dame’s head football coach, Brian Kelly, and his wife, Paqui, the foundation raised more than $1 million to support health, education, and community-building initiatives at local, national, and international levels. More than 450 guests attended the Irish Eyes gala, the foundation’s signature event, which celebrates game changers, that is, people and organizations that have demonstrated a dedication to improving the lives of others, and, in turn, inspire hope to all they encounter along the way. Since its founding in 2008, the Kelly Cares Foundation has donated over $5 million world-wide. The Kelly Cares Foundation fulfills its mission through medical research, educational programming, and community outreach.

RACHEL’S RADAR ST. BARTH By Rachel Heller

T

here’s a reason why celebrities, models and It girls consistently escape to the tropical island of St. Barth. It has the sophistication of St.-Tropez with the laissez-fare Caribbean laid-back lifestyle — which means it’s exclusive and high end yet totally unpretentious. You can go to the beach and then straight to a beach club in sunglasses and a wrap. The capital, Gustavia, encircles a yacht-filled harbor, where you might see a private helicopter landing on one of the many yachts in sight. Luxury retailers like Hermès, Bulgari, and Cartier are here too. You can also enjoy fabulous creperies. The first time I went to the island I was in shock. It is breathtaking and has such a vibe. The beaches are picturesque. There are 16 and each has a distinct personality. At Saline Beach you’ll find topless women frolicking in the translucent water and yards of soft, white sand that feels like powdered sugar between your toes. What you won’t find: tourist traps hawking sugary cocktails. Saline, like most other beaches on St. Barth, is rather bare bones — no bars, no shops, no restaurants — so be sure to pack your own water and food/snacks.

If you go to St. Barth and don’t experience Le Ti St-Barth, you’re doing it totally wrong. The most memorable night for me was dressing up and dancing at this great late-night spot. Waiters whisk you into a secret room in the back of the restaurant, dress you up like you’re going to an exotic party, and send you off to the main room totally transformed. If I were to recommend a lodging, I would say stay in a villa. The Eden Rock was damaged during the storm, but honestly the best place to stay in St. Barth is close to the port. You want to be in the action and rhythm of the village and experience its energy. St. Barth has events all year long. Many French holidays and a handful of Swedish ones are celebrated locally; larger international events include annual music festivals in January and August, and the Caribbean Film Festival in April. St. Barth residents have an avid passion for volleyball, and the Volleyball Cup Tournament in July draws big crowds. Instagram: @rachelhellerxo Social Life

MICHELLE MADONNA DESIGN By Blair Bass

M

ichelle Madonna established her own landscape-design business in the Hamptons three years ago, giving her a total of 10 years’ experience in landscape architecture in the Hamptons. She started her own business to enhance her creative freedom and she believes “in initiatives that support women-owned business and empower women entrepreneurs.” Her designs are innovative, marrying modern and classic styles, and combining wild and formal plantings to give powerful contrast to a garden. She explains how she adores “monochromatic gardens like an all-green garden or an all-white garden. They are classy and sophisticated, calming but simply beautiful. With everything I design, I have strong creative reasoning behind it. I want my gardens to be restorative and inspirational spaces for my clients.” As you can see in her designs, Michelle’s creative influencers include Frederick Law Olmstead, the father of landscape architecture who designed Central Park. “Being in a park that was designed but feels natural is one of the reasons I admire him.” Central Park was designed in the pastoral style of landscape architecture that uses nature as restoration for your spirit. “I believe all landscapes should be restorative,” she says. Another of her key influences is Maya Lin, the renowned designer, architect, and artist. Lin has created earth works known as wave fields, where the grassed landscape has been sculpted into waves, creating a work of art. “This inspires me to see landscape in different forms. The landscape is a canvas for art.” When asked about her favorite gardens, she shared with us that the 5oo acres of landscape art at Storm King Art Center in the Hudson Valley, which has one of Lin’s wave fields, is stunning and imaginative. A great place for inspiration. And, she explained that the “Japanese gardens of Kyoto are spectacular. I love and admire all styles of Japanese gardens, especially when the focus is on meditation and

contemplation. I believe a successful garden moves your mind and calms your soul. It brings peace to the modern and hectic, crazy world we live in.” Married in Bermuda last summer to a Wall Street portfolio manager, Michelle loves the Caribbean. “The tropical vegetation and color of the ocean are also sources of inspiration in my work.” Michelle Madonna Design madonnadesign.com Michelle Madonna Design is a certified M/WBE WomenOwned company offering residential and commercial landscape architecture. Michelle Madonna, the founder, has more than 10 years of experience delivering classic and modern landscapes informed by her leadership in horticulture, intimate garden design, and native ecology.

THE HAMPTONS POOL AN EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL OASIS By Thomas Day Lee

Sweet dreams are made of this: Stuart Andrews recommends pools as balms for the soul, such as the serene, secluded garden pool above.

T

he quintessential Hamptons summer lifestyle for many is outdoor living with a focus on poolside living. The pool and the area around it are used as “outdoor rooms,” the seamless flow between interior and exterior. If you’re considering designing and building a pool or renovating an older existing pool, you’ve got a daunting project ahead. With that in mind, Social Life sought out an expert to bring us up to speed on what’s involved in creating a special pool. We asked Stuart Andrews, the owner of Shinnecock Pools in Southampton, for his take on what makes a great pool and what he sees as his client’s chief concerns. Andrews — who has been building and caring for luxury pools in the Hamptons for more than 20 years — was forthright and even philosophical. “For many of my clients, building an amazing pool is often how they want to proclaim their success. If you’re a corporate CEO, work on Wall Street, or are in charge of a hedge fund,

you spend your days creating something that’s invisible and intangible to most people, and no one can see what you’ve made,” says Andrews. “For many successful people, creating an amazing pool is a metaphor for what they’ve achieved. And they truly are works of art. A lot of people choose to express themselves through the artistry of a pool.” Andrews, who has built and maintains some of the most dazzling pools on the East End, humbly offers that he is more of a facilitator than anything else. “My job is to listen and listen carefully to their ideas and hopes and then bring my client’s vision to reality. And that reality reveals their personal passions intensely. No two of my pools are the same; they’re like snowflakes!” he added. Even though he’s built pools costing seven figures, he prefers to focus on the intangible when discussing them. “I like to quote the author Joan Didion, who wrote: ‘A pool... is a symbol not of affluence but of order, of control over Social Life

the uncontrollable. A pool is water, made available and useful and is, as such, infinitely soothing...’ Isn’t that wonderfully put? Think about it. Water is the essence of life. Your pool offers so much. Quality time with your kids. Or imagine that skinny-dipping moment when you’re alone with your partner, late at night. It’s connecting your soul and body in a basic element, water. When immersed at the perfect temperature, with low-level lighting on a starry night, you achieve a Zen state of mind,” says Andrews. “Having a pool can be critical to your well-being,” he insists. “It’s not always about getting into your pool but knowing that it’s there for you at any time, that you can look forward to that moment after a hard day at work, to have time to yourself to be at peace, surrounded by the liquid perfection that exists in your backyard. It’s a source of calm, comfort, and belonging,” he adds. That’s never more true than on a Friday afternoon SocialLifeMagazine.com

when harried New Yorkers are chomping at the bit to get out of the city, away from their office and out to the Hamptons. “Many times the very first thing they do when they get to their house is to get out of their clothes and into their pool,” says Andrews. “And my job is to ensure that their experience, that split second of relief, is absolutely perfect. However, for people to drift into a meditative state when they get into their pool, everything must be flawless. The tile must be immaculate. The water condition must be just right. The temperature must be perfect,” he cautions. “That’s where I come in. That’s my job and frankly, my passion,” he emphasizes. Stuart Andrews is indeed the caretaker of the oasis.

WEDDING “WOWS” IN 2019 By Jacob Puck

T

o say that Lessing’s Hospitality Group is a caterer would be a gross understatement, yet, that’s the frame of reference most well-heeled Hamptonites have of this institution in business for more than 129 years. It’s no wonder: the toniest fêtes on the East End bear the trademark of Lessing’s, the premier luxury caterer of the region. That said, Lessing’s is so much more. “We’ve been expanding rapidly in the past year, and our portfolio makes it possible for our customers to truly experience one-stop shopping — we’ve really got it all,” says Jennifer Cantin, Lessing’s director of marketing and development. “Our claim to fame is that we deliver remarkable hospitality all the time, and provide each guest with unique, personalized experiences. Founded in 1890, Lessing’s Hospitality Group is a sixth-generation, family-owned company comprising over 120 locations throughout the Northeast and Florida. Lessing’s operates 17 wedding and catering venues, 10 full-service restaurants, over 80 corporate and academic dining centers, nine Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza franchises, and a historic inn. With wedding and event season in full swing, Social Life Magazine asked Cantin to reveal what’s hot —and what’s not — in 2019. What’s trending in wedding planning this summer? Without a doubt, sustainable celebrations. More and more, Hamptonites are focused on ensuring their events are environmentally friendly, and that’s great for us because it’s completely aligned with our mission. From reusable straws to bamboo tableware to — believe it or not — eco-friendly gowns, the world is changing. As the company grows, we feel that we need to continue to do our part to ensure that the planet is here for the future. Is it a tough sell? Not at all. In fact, sustainability and a focus on local sourcing is at the top of the list of priorities for every event. People are very motivated to support every facet of the local community. Nowadays, it’s unheard of not to integrate a local artisan into your party. From the food you serve to party favors, it’s all local. Where are you finding the greatest focus and biggest spend at weddings this season? Cocktail hours and after parties, where everything is craft or hyper local. Wow factors like pretzel walls and interactive s’mores stations. We are also seeing a decline in passed hors d’oeuvres and a concentration on upgraded food-stations focused on local purveyors, like the bakery around the corner or the local cheese maker. All these things serve a triple purpose: they are unique and pop with a wow SocialLifeMagazine.com

Jennifer Cantin

factor; they promote local businesses; and they make for great photos. By the way, neon signs with hashtags are quite a thing. You are an expert, so tell us: Is it gauche for guests to post photos of a wedding before the bride chooses her photos? Well, one of the biggest trends I’ve seen is Instagram hashtags on everything from signs to napkins to balloons to invitations. I think it’s the opposite: party-throwers are begging you to promote them! So that begs the question: Is there anything that’s over the top? Nope! I was at a wedding recently that featured a Bubbly Bus that served four local sparkling wines. If you can think of it, it can actually happen. You may need a little help from Lessing’s, but no request is outside the realm of possibility. Lessing’s Hospitality Group lessings.com

EVENTS LIKE NO OTHER WITH 4PM EVENTS WANT TO WOW YOUR GUESTS? MEET TATIANA By Cecilia Bloom

I

t’s 4PM. Do you know where your event planner is? If it’s Tatiana Byron Marx, then she is wherever you are anywhere over the globe, making sure your event is like no other. Tatiana’s roster of clients includes some of the biggest blockbuster names. Known as the “arbiter of great style and entrepreneurial prowess,” Tatiana takes Lionel Richie and Tatiana Byron Marx event planning to the highest level in creativity and quality, with a major splash of “wow” factor. Social Life sat down with Tatiana to discover her secrets to success. What was your big break into the world of celebrity events? I was hired to do a series of events for Roc-A-Fella Records at the Cannes Film Festival. For two weeks, I produced multiple events for Damon Dash and Jay-Z that were co-hosted by celebrities like Penelope Cruz and Leonardo DiCaprio. Those high-profile parties introduced me and 4PM Events to some of the biggest names in the industry and helped legitimize my fledgling brand. What would you say was the most out-of-the-box event you’ve planned? The most incredible event was a dinner party at Versailles. We transported our guests back to the 17th century at the height of Louis XIV’s extravagance, influence, and power. If you’re going to

go big, Versailles is your place! Guests arrived by horse and carriage and were greeted at the entrance of the palace by acrobats, fire eaters, and a slew of circus performers. After cocktails in Versailles’ remarkable gardens, we escorted our guests into the Hall of Mirrors, where we had designed and built a 220-foot long rectangular table. If you stood at the head of the table, it looked endless! We hired actors and musicians to wear period costumes and created parties within a party throughout the course of the evening, which ended with breathtaking fireworks . . . and a ton of clean-up. What is the most interesting wedding fantasy you’ve made come alive? A few years ago, we worked with clients who did a three-day buyout of Amanyara Resort in Turks & Caicos. The bride envisioned being married atop the pool overlooking the ocean. We designed and built a translucent structure over the infinity pool to support the canopy and act as an aisle for the bride, groom, and officiant. Framed by the sunset’s reflection on the ocean, the bride and groom looked like they were gliding on water as they walked to the altar. When the guests went inside for cocktails, we transitioned the space into a DJ booth and dance floor. Can you share your number one tip or tool for party planning? Lighting, lighting, and lighting. People underestimate its huge effect on the overall look and feel of a party. 4PM Events 4PMevents.com Social Life

ROUND HILL HOTEL & VILLAS HEAVEN IN JAMAICA By R. Couri Hay Round Hill Hotel and Villas

HONEYMOON DESTINATION Round Hill Hotel and Villas is one of the world’s most beautiful and luxurious honeymoon destinations. This is where John and Jacqueline Kennedy spent their honeymoon. From its beginning and continuing to today, this resort has been a magnet for celebrities.

THE PINEAPPLE HOUSE Ralph Lauren designed the 36 luxurious ocean-view guest rooms at The Pineapple House, the main hotel at Round Hill, but this was no mere interior design gig; it was a labor of love. “The greenness of Jamaica is gorgeous,” pronounced the designer. “It feels like a paradise. There’s a naturalness and ease of living.” Lauren and his wife, Ricky, own two of the 27 villas on the lush 110-acre property, the only two that are not available for rent.

ULTIMATE HOSPITALITY You can fly to Montego Bay from LGA, JFK, and Newark airports, including some non-stop flights. Round Hill has its own concierge at Montego Bay’s airport, ready to assist you and arrange private transportation to the resort, about 20 minutes away.

PRINCE HARRY & MEGHAN MARKLE In March 2017, Prince Harry brought along his then girlfriend, Meghan Markle, for the wedding of his best friend and

former wingman, Tom “Skippy” Inskip. They stayed at Cottage 16, where the author Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, once stayed. The glamorous, ultra-private villa has six bedrooms, two pools, and stunning views of the Caribbean, with décor by Ralph Lauren. All the villas come fully staffed with a designated chef, housekeeper, and gardener. You really don’t have to lift a finger at this resort, except to raise a flute of champagne to your lips.

COTTAGE 15 For the perfect honeymoon setting, I highly recommend Cottage 15, perched high on a hill with views of both Round Hill Bay and Montego Bay. This charming, secluded villa boasts three en-suite bedrooms, living and dining rooms, and expansive terraces with breathtaking views. We had our own large pool set in a lush green garden, plus a smaller plunge pool off one bedroom. Our villa included a daily New York Times, full use of the fitness center with instructor, non-motorized water sports, and a shuttle to the Tryall Golf Club.

IN-VILLA DINING While there are several dining options, the cook in your villa will pamper you. You literally do not need to leave your villa. You can eat all your meals there, in total privacy. On Mondays, the longtime general manager Josef Forstmayr hosts beach barbeque Social Life

parties. This tradition continues in signature Round Hill luxury style. This means tables with red tablecloths, candles, and fine silverware are set on the beach and buffet tables with various cuisines are placed under trees.

THE GRILL The Grill is Round Hill’s rooftop dining spot, where you can enjoy the balmy ocean breezes while taking in the panoramic views. The food here is modern Caribbean, much of it locally sourced, including snapper, grouper, and lobster straight from the sea. Ingredients are organic and sustainably grown. The menu here highlights the clean Caribbean cuisine prepared by the James Beard Award-winning chef Martin Maginley.

BAREFOOT ELEGANCE The stone terrace overlooking the sea serves lunch as well as themed meals, including a Caribbean curry night on Wednesdays and authentic Jamaican food on Fridays. There are also terrific vegetarian options. Desserts are homemade, SocialLifeMagazine.com

and there’s a flambé station with Jamaican rum. Tip: the à la carte menu is always available, so if the day’s cuisine is not to your taste, you won’t go hungry. The draw here is informal for lunch and dinner, but with elegant touches like candlelight and tablecloths. “Barefoot elegance” best describes the ambience.

TEA TIME Round Hill’s ultimate experience is daily tea time at 4 p.m. in the lounge, perfect for a break from the sun. The traditional tea fare includes perfect cucumber sandwiches, pastries, and fresh fruits. Check out the black-and-white photographs of famous guests from the past dotting the walls of the Round Hill’s cocktail bar, the perfect place for pre- or post-dinner cocktails, with sunset views and a musician tickling the ivories. Heaven.

BERLIN, GERMANY EUROPE’S EDGIEST CITY By R. Couri Hay

R. Couri Hay is the travel editor and society columnist for this magazine. Couri began his career at Andy Warhol’s Interview and he wrote for Town & Country and People. Couri also appears on CNN, PBS, FOX and VH1 commenting on Hollywood. He lives in NYC and Southampton and is the CEO of his own PR firm.

THE RITZ-CARLTON Flying to Berlin from New York takes eight hours, so be sure to find a direct flight with a flatbed to make the time change easier. Waiting for me at the Brandenburg Airport was my new best friend, the driver with my name on an iPad. Twenty minutes later, I pulled up to the Ritz-Carlton Berlin and was met by Ugur, the doorman, who greeted me with, “Welcome to your home in Berlin.” Once inside, I was dazzled by the sweeping, grand marble staircase that leads to an upper floor of reception rooms. “For those who know the difference between a Bentley and a bicycle,” is one of the Ritz-Carlton’s tag lines, and it fits. The 5-star hotel is sumptuous, elegant, and understated. Located in the dynamic Potsdamer Platz Quarter, it’s perfectly situated, overlooking the Tiergarten, the city’s famous park, and close to attractions like the Berlin Wall, Museum Island, other historic landmarks, and shopping.

WHAT’S DOING IN BERLIN The novelist Christopher Isherwood famously wrote about the debauchery of early 1930s Weimar Berlin in his book The Berlin Stories, which was later adapted into the musical Cabaret. I’ve kept a diary of my 2019 visit to Berlin, which I will recount here. While my experiences in this lively city were nowhere near as racy as Isherwood’s, you’ll find that some of that decadent nightlife still exists today. Read on.

DIAL C FOR SCANDAL Berlin has been attracting artists and musicians from the U.S. and around the world for years, and the city is bursting with creative types, like my pal Colette Lumiere, who is better known simply as Colette. A French-born, American multimedia artist, Colette is renowned for her groundbreaking work exploring gender roles in performance art,

street art, and photography. An artist-in-residence at the Löwenpalais in Berlin for the past three years, Colette knows her way around, and she showed me the city’s cutting-edge venues and important historical sites.

RITZ-CARLTON PENTHOUSE But before hitting the town, I needed a nap and shower. The Ritz’s grandest suite is the 3,100-square-foot penthouse, for $17,000 a night. Mine was a more modest, yet still chic, corner suite complete with a foyer, dressing area with extravagant closet space, and luxurious gold marble bathroom with a heated floor. The generously proportioned living room in shades of green with splashes of deep purple had a comfortable seating area and two expansive windows with sweeping city views. Electronic curtains made it easy to shut out the daylight for a little rest before going out.

THE ART OF COCKTAILS AND PERFUMERY Berlin’s Ritz-Carlton is known for its Curtain Club, a classic, woodlined cocktail lounge hidden away from the bustling city on an upper floor, and The Lounge, renowned for high tea (tea varieties change each season). But without doubt, Fragrances, its bar where cocktails are combined with perfumes, is unique.“The Art of Cocktails and Perfumery” is its motto. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Arnd Henning Heissen, the hotel’s bar manager, has created cocktails that correspond to particular scents. A bar patron gets to whiff samples of 15 different expensive perfumes from Guerlain, Armani, and Bulgari. After the guest reveals the favorite scent, the bartender serves one of 15 signature cocktails that pair with that exact scent. The concept also makes for terrific conversation if you go with friends. There is literally nothing like it.

BRING THE KIDS As swanky as the Ritz-Carlton is, the helpful staff goes to great lengths to welcome even the youngest of travelers. Little ones re-

ART GALLERY CRAWL I arrived on a Friday, and we kicked off the evening gallery-hopping and checking out Berlin’s vibrant art scene. First stop was the Konig Galerie to see the work of Jeremy Shaw. One of Berlin’s major galleries, Konig is housed in a former church, a wildly impressive structure dominated by a cathedral-height room, where we saw an avant-garde video piece. Our next stop was the Sprüth Magers gallery, where we saw works by Thomas Demand, and a terrific installation by John Bock. This artist had created a series of African-inspired forms and huts around the triple-height space. Bock himself, covered in tribal tattoos, hovered stories above us, peering down and working on miniature artworks. There were two other exhibitions in the gallery but Bock dominated the night. Berlin is a young town and the galleries were filled with attractive people in sophisticated fashion.

SEVEN STAR GALLERY We continued our gallery expedition at Seven Star Gallery, an edgy spot that is literally half underground. Earlier, there had been an avantgarde musical performance by Bob Rutman at a venue upstairs, and the gallery invited him to play afterward. His instruments, fashioned from string and sheets of tin, made mysterious, eerie sounds that filled the cavernous, candle-lit underground space. The gallery doubles as a bar, and a lively group gathered, talking art, music, and design.

THE KITKAT CLUB We popped across the street to a charming local place, and fortified ourselves with a goulash dinner before hitting the KitKat Club. Cue the aforementioned reference to Berlin’s decadent nightlife: the KitKat is renowned for its techno and trance music, and its, uh, uninhibited party atmosphere. To clarify: guests are permitted to engage in sex acts openly at this venue. And they do, but not me; I’m a voyeur to the core. The KitKat Club opened in 1994 by Austrian pornographic filmmaker Simon Thaur and his partner, Kirsten Kruger. There is a strict dress code: patrons must wear fetish, leather, latex, kinky, or just look glamorous to gain admittance. Pro tip: if you show up in regular clothing, try removing your shirt. This place is named after the Kit Kat Club burlesque theater in Cabaret.

THE BUNKER On Saturday, we hit the Bunker, an art gallery in a former Nazi bunker that has also been home to an S&M club. Founded in 2002 by Christian and Karen Boros, the Bunker showcases their contemporary art holdings, the Boros collection. While searching for the space, the Boroses considered all kinds of abandoned buildings, including schools, hospitals, and even swimming pools, but were so smitten when they found what they call “surely the ugliest building in Berlin” that they moved in. They now reside in a 5,900-square-foot glasswalled apartment above the gallery. You need an appointment to visit the gallery, whose exhibition changes every four years. Among the artists currently on display are Social Life

Martin Boyce, Andreas Eriksson, Guan Xiao, Pamela Rosenkranz, Avery Singer, and Michel Majerus. The tour, led by an extremely knowledgeable young guide, takes 90 minutes and is definitely worth it. I got to participate in creating a work by sticking black tape from a large pile onto a mural, and later, made an artwork of a knife by stamping a paper with a wood block, an instant memento of Berlin and the Bunker. sammlung-boros.de

THE CLÄRCHENS BALLROOM We were starving by now and went to Clärchens Ballroom for goulash and duck. The Clärchens is an institution in Berlin, where concerts are held. The music ranges widely from Gypsy music to classical, and locals of all ages dance everything from the tango to the cha-cha. Built in 1913, it was rescued from demolition in 2005 by its current owners, who left it artfully faded, complete with chipped paint and cracked mirrors. Definitely check out the pièce de résistance, the mirrored ballroom upstairs. After we left, we took a short walk down Bodestrasse, peering in the windows of a dozen galleries. This is Berlin’s SoHo.

MUSEUM ISLAND I had been looking forward to going to Museum Island, and it did not disappoint. Archaeologically monumental, the island holds five museums with a sixth due to open later in 2019. Some of these buildings that suffered damage in the bombing of Berlin during World War II only re-opened as recently as 2009. The entire complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site. SocialLifeMagazine.com

The most interesting was the Pergamon Museum. Its divisions include an antiquity collection, Middle East museum, and museum of Islamic art. One of Germany’s most popular museums, you’ll find monumental buildings here. Also here are an enormous altar that was likely part of a temple and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, built by King Nebuchadnezzar in 575 BCE. Dedicated to the goddess Ishtar, the gate was one of the original Seven Wonders of the World, and was reconstructed here in 1930, using original bricks. After immersing ourselves in artifacts from ancient Babylon, we went on to the Neues Museum, where we found more ancient relics, this time from Egypt, including the iconic bust of Queen Nefertiti from 1345 BCE. It is one of the most copied works of ancient Egypt, making Nefertiti one of the most famous women of the ancient world. (And yes, it’s the subject of a longstanding dispute. Egypt wants it back). Across the street from the museum is the huge Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, a landmark in Berlin. Hit by bombing during the war, the damaged spire remains, and the ground floor is now a memorial hall.

CHECKPOINT CHARLIE On the way back to my hotel, I stopped at Checkpoint Charlie, the most-trafficked crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. After German reunification, Checkpoint Charlie became a tourist attraction, and is now located in the Allied Museum. We walked a few blocks to see what’s left of the original Berlin Wall. That was pretty grim, but the tales of the ingenious ways that people escaped were impressive. My favorite was the girl who fit into two adjoining suitcases and entered West Berlin via train. SOHO HOUSE BERLIN

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL

Once changed into my de rigueur all-black outfit, we went to SoHo House Berlin, an imposing building that was originally a department store. In 1933, the store’s Jewish owners were pushed out, and the space became the headquarters of the Reich Youth Leadership organization. Today, Soho House members can enjoy various dining options and a rooftop bar, screening room, fitness facility, spa, and pool. It’s also a hotel, offering 65 rooms, 20 apartments, and four spacious lofts. A favorite of celebrities, the legendary Soho House discretion applies in Berlin: lips (and camera phones) are sealed while on the premises. The club floors are warm and cozy, and we shared a roast chicken, French fries, and a bottle of Dom Ruinart.

On Sunday, we went to the heartbreaking Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, better known as the Holocaust Memorial. This monumental and gut-wrenching installation consists of more than 2,700 concrete slabs laid in a grid pattern on a sloping field. As you walk among the slabs resembling coffins, you feel immersed in a maze, a forest of stone. It is a profoundly moving experience. The memorial opened on May 10, 2005, 60 years after the end of WW II. An underground Place of Information, bears the names of 3 million Holocaust victims.

BERGHAIN, THE WORLD’S TOP CLUB Once the clock struck 2 a.m., we headed to Berghain, the top nightclub in the world, with a brutal door policy. Getting in was as hard as trying to get into Studio 54 and The Saint at the pinacle of their fame. But Colette’s glamorous friend Sasha, in a black velvet opera cape, walked us past two thousand freezing people who were waiting patiently to get in, right to the sternest, most difficult doorman on the planet, and, voila, we were in. This is no exaggeration: This dance club is the most exclusive in the world and the skinhead door gods aren’t even bribable. The Telegraph even assigned a reporter to write about the experience of trying to get in. Not the club itself, just getting in. (The reporter didn’t make the grade after waiting ages in the cold. When the door crew told him he couldn’t go in, he asked why, and they said, “Because we decided”).

CHARLOTTENBURG PALACE The fabulously lavish Charlottenburg Palace is worth a visit. Dating from the 17th century, its baroque and rococo interiors are stunning, as are its formal gardens. The largest palace in Berlin, it suffered damage during the war, but has been restored and is one of the city’s top attractions.

SANSSOUCI PALACE If you have an afternoon free, take a 45-minute drive to see Sanssouci Palace, the summer home of Frederick the Great, built in 1745. Its beauty makes it the German rival of Versailles. The palace, with its extensive gardens, was located well outside the city as a respite to the royal pomp, a place where the king could relax in private.

BERLINISCHER GALERIE Not all of the museums are closed on Mondays, but it’s best to check ahead so you won’t be disappointed. Colette took me to the Martin Gropius Bau, a museum of contemporary art in a Social Life

historic building, to see the Ming Wong exhibition. Later, we checked out the Berlinischer Galerie, which also shows contemporary art in a spectacular, modern building. Berlin art spaces surprise you with their variety of styles, from small and intimate to gargantuan galleries that house both oversize works and those suspended overhead. This place has an elaborate floating double staircase that’s a work of art in itself.

BRANDENBURG GATE & REICHSTAG BUILDING Be sure to have your concierge book you a visit to the Reichstag, Berlin’s parliament, to see the Norman Foster-designed dome. This glass space reminded me of the Guggenheim because of its spiral walkway, which, in Berlin, overlooks the city’s skyline and monuments. The building was heavily damaged during World War II, and was closed off by the Berlin Wall during the Cold War years. The artists Christo and Jean-Claude wrapped the Reichstag in 1995, before reconstruction began, drawing millions of visitors. Nearby is the Brandenburg Gate, one of Berlin’s most important sites, and a must-see. Built in 1791 by the Prussian King Frederick William II, the Brandenburg Gate has throughout its history been home to historical events in Germany, and became a symbol of the post-war divided Germany when the gate was closed off by the Berlin Wall. Later, the gate became a symbol of the country’s reunification, in 1990.

looks, from the neon sign outside to the art and mural-splashed interior. A hub for art, music, and film, the Paris has attracted stars like David Bowie, Madonna, and Iggy Pop over the years. Try the lamb chops or the bouillabaisse. Another landmark is Café Einstein, one of the most beloved coffee houses in Berlin, housed in a building that miraculously survived the bombing that leveled the surrounding area. The food is great, and the strudel is out of this world.

THE LÖWENPALAIS, STARKE FOUNDATION EXHIBITIONS The Löwenpalais, a magnificent manor house built for the royal sommelier in 1903, has a storied history, and in 1930 was divided into flats for well-known actors and scientists of the era. Flash forward to 1987, when Jörg Peter Starke inherited the estate. He founded the Starke Foundation and invited artists to use the apartments as studios. The foundation began mounting exhibitions, and the Löwenpalais quickly became a popular venue for art lovers. My friend and Berlin tour guide, Colette, has had an artist residency here for the past several years. In her art-strewn studio, she has created one of her famous boudoir interiors. This magical space, draped in pale pink fabrics and tulle, houses sculpture and paintings, including new works based on her recent safari in Africa. PRAGUE THE CITY OF A HUNDRED SPIRES By Anthony Giampetruzzi Alchymist Grand Hotel & Spa

ew cities can boast an objective comparison to Paris, the grand dame of Europe. Buenos Aires tries to get away with it. Quebec City, a true Canadian jewel, indeed passes the straight-face test . . . albeit on a miniscule scale. But, when it comes to having a true Old World experience, one steeped in authenticity, history, and luxury, nothing comes close to Prague. The City of a Hundred Spires is among a handful of European cities that weren’t all but destroyed during World War II, or eviscerated by subsequent years of neglect. To the contrary, Prague, and much of the Czech Republic, has retained its grandeur and continues to age gracefully and has now enjoyed 30 years of democracy. While there is no short list when it comes to Prague, there are some must-sees. The Charles Bridge. Perhaps one of the most photographed sites in Europe, this pedestrian bridge over the Vltava River is notable for its sensational views of the city, its collection of somber statues of Catholic saints, and as the primo spot for wedding photos.

The Jewish Quarter. Prepare to be overwhelmed. This neighborhood survived the Nazi occupation during World War II and today serves as a stark reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust. The Prague Castle. Serving as an enormous sentry over the city, this ninth-century complex and its environs encapsulate hundreds of years of rich history. Look for the giant stained glass window of the country’s patron saint, St. Wenceslaus, designed by Alphone Mucha in the St. Vitus Cathedral. Mucha, an Art Nouveau master, may as well be the city’s patron saint. Speaking of Mucha, brush up on your Art Nouveau history – each turn of every corner reveals a restored edifice, statue, or other flourish of this style. It’s just one — but important — element of what makes Prague unique. With its growing popularity, Prague has done exceptionally well in its offerings for the luxury traveler. At the top of a short list is the remarkable Alchymist Grand Hotel & Spa. Situated in Prague’s Lesser Town, just below the Prague Castle and literally next door to the U.S. Embassy, the Alchymist, while in walking distance of

anything of note, is tucked away. This is important, mainly because since Prague has become popular, Old Town and commercial areas can be quite congested. Here, you’ll find some much-needed peace and quiet after your explorations. For those who prefer grand over boutique, the Alchymist wows. Housed in a structure more than 500 years old, this true five-star exudes a beautiful baroque style and a refined ambience. While the hotel is, by most measures, aged, it in no way feels old. On site, Aquarius Restaurant spoils guests with local cuisine (think duck and other game), homemade Italian pasta, and exquisite wines. Ecsotica Spa, located in the ancient cellar, offers perfect relaxation after a day on your feet. The rooms are everything you’d expect from a grand European hotel. Spacious, with dramatic vertical and horizontal orientations, these are places to spread out. Modern amenities abound, yet the Alchymist has taken special care to remind guests that this building is a piece of history. Drapes and bedding are heavy. There is gilt galore. And the bathrooms feature the exquisite exposed plumbing of a bygone era. In town for nuptials or just want as much room as possible to feather the nest? Go all in with the 900-square-foot Alchymist Suite. This one-bedroom stunner features remarkable Gothic ceilings throughout, a four-poster king-size bed, and an Italian balcony SocialLifeMagazine.com

with pleasant views of an inner courtyard. However, the main feature of this suite is the uniquely enormous marble bathroom with a centrally placed bathtub, separate shower, and luxury amenities. Prague is regarded as one of Europe’s most charming, colorful, and beautiful cities. Hotels such the Alchymist are in no small way contributing to the magic. AWASI IGUAZÚ FALL INTO LUXURY ADVENTURE By Anthony Giampetruzzi

W

henever you venture deep into the natural world, you expect some element of roughing it. It simply comes with the territory. Truth be told, a little coarseness translates to an authenticity that better grounds you in your milieu anyway. You can expect some of this type of wildness at the intersection of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. Those in the know are familiar with the region, and its raison d’etre, the sensational Iguazú Falls. Let’s just stop right here for a second. The Iguazú Falls, an exquisite environmental marvel of 275 individual drops, has inspired awe among tourists and indigenous inhabitants. It’s a sight of unfathomable beauty. With the distinction of being the world’s largest waterfall system, it is arguably grand by nearly every measure. Just exploring the various angles of the falls, which involves treks through lush rainforests, is worth the trip. This area is manna for bird watchers, and there is an abundance of wildlife to behold. If you’re lucky, you’ll get close to a toucan or spot a jaguar from afar. And then there are the flutters of butterflies. A highlight of any trip to the region is seeing thousands of these magnificent blue, yellow, and white creatures. Set your iPhone to slow-mo to capture a video that will make your friends beyond envious. Most people who visit the area can enjoy these attractions regardless of where they stay, but for the luxury adventurer, one op-

tion elevates the experience to something out of a storybook. Awasi Iguazú, a Relais & Chateaux property in Argentina’s Misiones Province, is the epitome of simple luxury — it’s anything but rough. Located only 20 minutes from the falls, the new compound of 14 villas and a lodge is situated on the banks of the Iguazú River. The property is completely surrounded by the Atlantic Rainforest, and the resort staff is totally committed to immersing guests in extreme comfort. Getting here is relatively simple. It’s a short and picturesque flight from a nearby hub, most often Buenos Aires. Expect to be met at the airport by a personal guide who handles every detail of your visit for the duration of your trip. All guides are required to have an intimate knowledge of the area as well as the ecological and anthropological aspects that make it unique. After a short drive to the lodge, during which you receive an introduction to the region and a preview of the excursions available during your stay, you arrive at the breathtaking collection of structures that make up Awasi. The central building is the massive open-air lodge that provides plenty of room for lounging, eating, and even shopping. It’s usual for Awasi to invite local indigenous artisans to show their jewelry, carved pieces, and other art. These artists’ works also decorate the lodge and villas. Upon arrival, you will enjoy your first foray into an epicurean adventure unlike any other. While relishing a lunch or late Social Life

Next up: an overview of your private villa. While the ambient sounds of the rainforest remind you that you’re indeed isolated and smack in the jungle, the villa provides a safe and civilized oasis. The villas are spotless, well appointed, and environmentally appropriate. The open-concept villas are spacious. A villa’s living room area contains an overstuffed couch and chairs; its sleeping area has a dreamy bed dressed in sumptuous linens. The villas are decorated with plenty of indigenous art to admire. A separate bathroom features everything you’d expect from a five-star property, including exceptional bath amenities. The pièce d’résistance is the private deck and plunge pool where you enjoy the sights and sounds of nature without seeing or hearing other guests. Throughout your stay, the staff is attentive and intuitive. Don’t be surprised to return from dinner to find your villa glowing with candles, a bottle of wine on a table, and exotic petals scattered across your bed. Eventually, you’ll want to get some sleep because your days will be full of adventure. Curated excursions, which you carefully plan with your private guide, are at the heart of the Awasi experience. history, archeology, anthropology, and nature, and your guide will perfectly align excursions with your interests. Our guide, Carlos, was just as passionate about our experience as he was about the land and people of his region . . . it made all the difference. It’s typical to spend two or more days exploring the falls. However, an abundance of other excursions away from the falls, including boat trips, hikes, and archeological explorations can keep you well occupied. Expect to have an appetite by day’s end. The cuisine can only be described as unrivaled. From the experimentation that goes into crafting meals from locally sourced flora and fauna to mindblowing presentation, the arrival of each dish is a new culinary adventure. The chef Aarón Castillo Tellería, his staff, and bartenders are up to any challenge, and they were adroit at handling oddball requests and diet restrictions. In all, it doesn’t take the crew long to catch on to any individual peccadilloes, and their intuition grows as the days go on . . . in short, the staff is on their game. With luxury adventure growing in popularity across South America, sorting through options can take some time. Or not. Relais & Chateaux has an impeccable reputation and choosing from its growing portfolio of Awasi properties in South America can significantly reduce the time you spend on vacation decision-making. awasiiguazu.com relaischateaux.com Social Life

ore and more, travelers to the Atlantic’s most exclusive islands are discovering that Turks and Caicos is the premier luxury destination for privacy. While the small British territory just southeast of the Bahamas consists of 40 different islands, only eight are inhabited, and of these, visitors have their choice of exquisite resorts and smaller boutique properties. Increasingly, villas are available for something a little more special. Nowadays, the discriminating traveler who seeks extreme comfort also desires extreme privacy. Yes, there are exceptional resorts across the region, but what could be more intimate than your own villa. “Turks and Caicos villas are the perfect way to enjoy a private, convenient and luxurious holiday on our islands,” says Pamela Ewing, the regional marketing manager for the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board. “In fact, there’s truly something for everyone, with a wide range of villas and beach rentals that feature everything from panoramic views of our pristine waters to magical sunsets and, in most cases, both!” Turks and Caicos villa rentals range in size from two to six or more bedrooms, which ensures a lot of flexibility when planning a romantic getaway for two or a jaunt for the entire family. A selection of villas within close proximity to a number of amenities is a perfect option when hosting or attending a wedding or other special event. “Most Turks and Caicos villas offer amenities such as private SocialLifeMagazine.com

pools, hot tubs, large outdoor living areas, and secluded beaches as well as top-of-the-line furnishings and appliances and conveniences,” says Ewing. “They are all designed with your wants and needs in mind.” For instance, gourmet kitchens are typically available, making it possible to hire an on-island private chef, something that is easily arranged. With no shortage of styles and sizes to choose from, Ewing says there is something for every taste and every size family. “Many of the villas are even perfect for entertaining, with all sorts of techy amenities to keep you and your family and friends as connected to the outside world as you wish,” says Ewing. From marvelous oceanfront homes that offer unforgettable views of shimmering turquoise waters to beautiful natural gardens — or both — Turks villas can fulfill every preference. “What’s more, Turks and Caicos rental-management firms can take care of your every need, from airport transfers and local ground transportation to stocking your kitchen with just what you need even before you arrive to daily cleaning services,” says Ewing. “A rental of a villa is an ideal way for a family or group to spend quality time on a vacation in paradise . . . and just let go!” Check out turksandcaicostourism.com for a full slate of available properties and discover the most ideal way for a family or group to spend quality time in paradise.

New York City’s acclaimed Japanese omakase and kaiseki restaurant Shuko returns to East Hampton as a pop-up inside Highway Restaurant & Bar. Omakase and al la carte offerings are available in the dining room and on the outdoor patio. Helmed by chefs Nick Kim and Jimmy Lau (aka Sushi Jimmy), Shuko Beach offers a 15-piece, seasonal omakase main meal and granita for dessert — a choice worth making. SOTO sake, wines, and champagne specials, along with signature cocktails like the matcha lada (white rum, matcha tea, coconut milk, and agave) provide ample pairings. Also noteworthy is that Shuko Beach offers items to-go via UberEats. Can you beat that? For Mexican-food cravings, the team behind Nick & Toni’s, La Fondita, Towline BBQ, Rowdy Hall, and Honest Catering have opened Coche Comedor Amagansett in the space once known as the Honest Diner, adjacent to La Fondita. For wine fans, there will be sangria on tap, rotating with the seasons — red, white, or rosé. Inventive, creative and a smash hit! The Lobster Roll in Amagansett is a great choice for on-thefly dining and lingering. Start with the signature buttery lobster roll and iced cold beer. If a chill is in the air, perhaps the homemade Manhattan seafood chowder loaded to the brim with clams, shrimp, scallops, and cod will hit the spot. Worth noting, the Lobster Roll’s co-owner Andrea Anthony has her own cooking show, Eat, Drink, and Bake with Andrea. Her show airs the third week in June on Optimum Altice, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, and YouTube. Andrea was discovered through her cookbook and her longstanding restaurant on the Napeague stretch, lovingly nicknamed “Lunch.” Andrea shops at Citarella, IGA in Amagansett, Red Horse Market, and Stuart’s Seafood Market for all of her ingredients, keeping things locally sourced. We extend a grateful nod to her for sharing her secrets beyond the Lobster Roll. While Bostwick’s will remain and continue serving lunch and dinner, its owners, Kevin Boles and Chris Eggert, have planned a seafood-centric menu at Bostwick’s on the Harbor. Look for raw bar selections, inventive appetizers such as mussels and ale, and burrata and peach salad, steamed lobsters, lobster roll, crab cakes, and more. A selection of wines by the glass and the bottle will be offered as well as a creative cocktail menu and beers on draft. Cheers!

Let me inspire you! BY ANDREA CORREALE

Fancy it up with Mocktails Whether it’s dining or drinking, people have become much more fussy over the past several years. Natural ingredients are just the beginning when it comes to the perfect dish or libation; more and more “craft” is the best way to describe the way that we like our preparations. A big trend has been craft cocktails, but the truth is that you don’t need booze to achieve a delicious and oftentimes visually appealing beverage. No, mocktails are in demand and they are no longer just for kids. Whether it’s an afternoon by the pool, or an early evening soiree, Hamptonites are looking for healthy nonalcoholic options to quench their thirst and ensure the end result is a healthy mind and a healthy body. So, what are some of my tips for the perfect mocktail? ANDREA CORREALE, ENTERTAINING EXPERT,

1. First and foremost, use farm fresh fruits and other muddled ingredients such as herbs to give the drink dimension and complexity. And don’t forget to hang onto some fruit slices or herb sprigs for garnish. 2. Kill it with the cubes! You can easily find ice cube trays that represent fun shapes, fill them with colorful juices, or even add pieces of fruit or edible flowers. Plan ahead for this. 3. If just a teensy bit of alcohol is fine with your guests, consider bitters which is potent combo of liquid herbs. These days, they are the essence of “craft” and are often locally made. Have a couple varieties on hand. Of course, the best advice is to lean into the types of ingredients that truly refresh, and, for me, there’s nothing like watermelon. It’s a perfect summer staple that’s available for the entire season, always easy, and incredibly refreshing. WATERMELON SPRITZERS Ingredients: 2-½ pounds fresh watermelon, cut into cubes, 3 lemons, juiced, 2 tablespoons honey, 2 cups seltzer, Mint leaves Instructions: Place the watermelon, lemon juice and honey into a blender. Mix until it becomes a smooth liquid. Strain the mixture into a large bowl, pressing the juice out of any seeds or pulp that remains in the strainer. Pour the juice into a pitcher then add your choice of seltzer and lemon. Serve over craft ice of your choice with a watermelon wedge garnish.

He is a highly sought-after legal analyst for CNN, MSNBC, the Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, Bloomberg, and Dan Abrams’ Law & Crime Network. randyzelinlaw.com Social Life

PRODUCER TRAVIS GUENTHER

PORTRAIT OF AMERICA

By Bennett Marcus

By Bennett Marcus

TAKE MY HAND Travis Guenther, who has worked with Celine Dion, Pink, and Gloria Estefan, is a founding member of Jullian Records. Travis is launching Take My Hand, a new division focused on management and producing musical artists. His first acts are Vocally Aligned and the singing duo Monica and Nick.

VOCALLY ALIGNED Singers Ashley Ryan, Nicholas Leigh, Pedro Coppeti, and Nazarria Workman make up Vocally Aligned, a group performing jazz and cabaret classics. They will debut at 54 Below on June 18 and then open a residency at the Algonquin Hotel, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary at the end of June. “The four of them together are amazing,” says Travis. 54below.com

MONICA & NICK Classical musicians and singers Monica Lu and Nicholas Simpson met while performing on a cruise ship. Nick is a tenor and Monica sings and plays piano. They work across genres, mixing Broadway, the American songbook, opera, and classical songs. “I always find the musical conversations I have with Monica to be entertaining,” says Nick. “Nicholas and I have this amazing chemistry,” said Monica. Travis is helping the duo to bridge the gap between land and sea by booking them in NYC.

THE ALGONQUIN

THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY David Datuna’s artwork Portrait of America, a 12-foot American flag, was the first public installation to incorporate Google Glass, and it was a sensation when it was shown at the Smithsonian Institution. “It was their biggest show in the last 36 years,” Datuna says. In the piece, he layered of 2,000 eyeglass lenses across portraits of the country’s greatest innovators. Using Google Glass, viewers see video as they hear audio clips of important moments in American history. “I connected together art and lifelike technology through Google Glass,” says the artist who immigrated to the U.S. from Soviet Georgia.

FLAG MAN Much of Datuna’s work involves flags and eyeglass lenses. People call him “flag man.” “Flags, for me, are living organisms. It’s not just the banner of the country; it’s a living organism, because, we all together make the living organism.” The lenses, he says, became his medium because he worked for many years in an optical store. “It’s like our view. It could be positive or negative; it’s all different perspective.”

CLONING ETERNITY

Travis’s Christmas show at the Algonquin was a hit, so they asked him to explore the American songbook with both acts. “I wanted to take Broadway to a more accessible level than a show where the tickets are priced so high that nobody can go. If you love the American songbook, you can see both acts in NYC this summer, at a price you can afford,” says Travis.

In June, Datuna, created a 12-hour Happening in Greenwich Village’s Washington Square Park. The artist unveiled a two-part installation of a perfect circle, representing the ancient symbol of eternity and a skull representing life titled Cloning Eternity. This is on display, along with other new work, at Datuna’ s new gallery/studio in Long Island City at 43-05 Vernon Boulevard. Everyone is invited to drop in and meet the artist.

RESTAURATEUR IAN DUKE IS SET TO LEAD THE HAMPTONS DINING SCENE THIS SUMMER By Rodney Sparrow t is often said that good things come in threes, which is certainly the case when considering the impact Ian Duke has had on Southampton’s social and culinary scene. As a key player on the leadership team behind the 2019 launch of the instant classic Union Burger Bar, Ian is also responsible for Union Cantina, now in its fourth season, and the ever-popular Southampton Social Club since 2010. Union Cantina, a favorite destination for festive happy-hour drinks and live music, offers an innovative take on classic Mexican dishes such as the signature deconstructed enchilada. Social Club is the heartbeat of Southampton nightlife with its carefully selected menu combined with a chic indoor dining area and outdoor lounges perfect for late night cocktails. Even before entering Southampton, Ian Duke was no stranger to hospitality. He got his first taste of the industry at age 13 while working as a dishwasher at a local restaurant. Since then, he earned a degree from New York University, and has worked in nearly every capacity of the restaurant business, acquiring considerable experience in restaurant design, construction, financing, staff development, menu development, implementation, and event planning. Additionally, Ian has worked in consulting for various groups, including U.S. Concepts/Diageo, providing salesmanship training for numerous brand ambassadors. With his wealth of experience, it is no wonder that Ian is a partner in several restaurants between New York City and Southampton: Prohibition — a live-music venue, bar, and restaurant that has been a perennial favorite on the Upper West Side of Manhattan since 1996; Lucky’s Famous Burgexperiences that are appealing to families, groups, locals, siners in Hell’s Kitchen and Chelsea, which is a great spot for a gles and as go-to venues for parties and events.
