PUBLISHER’S LETTER

June in the Hamptons is a great time. It gives you a chance to enjoy yourself before the big summer rush in July and August. Some New Yorkers shun the Hamptons during June, thinking it’s too cold, but I think they’re missing out. June weather is just fine, with many beautiful days to spend at the beach and pursue the myriad of outdoor activities available here. Getting away each weekend makes your summer longer, giving you extra weeks to refresh and do the things you enjoy the most. The most exciting social happening in June is Polo Hamptons. On Saturday, June 24, Christine Evangelista, the star of the E! series The Arrangement, will host Polo Hamptons, a polo match and cocktail party under a tent at the Southampton Polo Club. This will be the pinnacle event of the summer and I recommend attending. For more information and to buy tickets go to polohamptons.com In addition to Polo, a full array of events will occur throughout the month. Because summer weekends are limited, and there’s so much to do, it’s important to plan your time so that you really get to enjoy each day you spend out East. My advice is to limit your weekend time in the digital world. Look at your phone only twice per day over the weekend, and disconnect from social media and texting. Make your plan for the weekend and stick to it! With July Fourth approaching fast, put the brakes on your busy life and spend some long weekends in the Hamptons . . . before summer is over! LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Hello, June! How long have we been waiting for your glorious month of bright lemon colored sun, watermelon juice, gelatos, and all things delicious? My favorite days are the ones spent cooking with those I love. Is there anything better than preparing a meal with your closest friends, and all the while having good hearty belly laughs? That’s what summertime is all about. It’s absolute magic woven from good wine and talks that last past midnight. Of course, endless talks touch on so many subjects and during a time of tailspin there will be many strong opinions. Global uncertainties — from the chaotic situation in Venezuela to our own issues at home — don’t sit well with most. And so I wanted to discuss how to create our own silver linings. It’s important to think through the current climate, but it’s also important to find and harness your own joy. Here are three ways to create happiness: Start with gratitude. It’s been scientifically proven that gratitude is good for you: it strengthens your immune system, lowers your blood pressure, and increases your motivation. Through gratitude we acknowledge the goodness in our lives, and studies show that the more we do this, the happier we become. Plus, gratitude is a relationship-strengthening emotion — everyone has a deep need to feel appreciated. So make a list of the things and people you are grateful for! Schedule optimism. Now that you are grateful for what you have in your life, why not notice all the amazing things around you? Most of the intelligent people I’ve come across feel a need to be cynical. It’s as if they think optimism somehow is less grounding. But optimism is actually very powerful. When one sees the good or light in things, it truly staves off the darkness, stress, and dread that can lead to feelings of moral superiority and resentment about the world around us. By seeing the good in the world around you, you become a magnet for happiness, your mood changes, and your joy becomes infectious! Be in a good mood and watch good people, great opportunities, and an increased level of joy come your way. Take care of the world around you. You may not be able to change everything about the world that bothers you, but you can and do make an impact. Jane Goodall says, “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” Whether you want to volunteer, donate, or make lifestyle choices that impact the world, we need you. The world needs everyday heroes. Wishing you the happiest of Junes, Enjoy the view.

JEWELRY

“COLOR” DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND THE WORLD OF SPARKLING & BRILLIANT COLOR By Alexandra Keating

D

iamonds have a magical way of making us women feel like princesses, just downright special. This year the trend for colored jewels has hit an all-time high and Social Life sought to learn more about the world of colored diamonds. We selected Leibish & Co., an international specialist and online dealer of natural fancy colored diamond jewelry and fine gemstone jewelry. The company offers one of the largest online selections of colored diamonds and gemstones with both fancy and ideal cuts in various hues, clarities, sizes, and colors set for any budget, with a focus on Argyle pink and canary yellow diamonds. The majority of their stones are mined in Australia, Africa, India, and Russia and all come from legitimate, conflict-free sources complying with UN resolutions. Social Life sat down with the authority on colored diamonds, Leibish Polnauer, the founder of Leibish & Co., to gain more clarity into what makes him sparkle.

seen a brown diamond at that point, I told him they were my area of expertise. Having no idea where I would find the stones, I began my search and managed to acquire some of the diamonds in Israel, and then I traveled to New York to find the rest. To get the diamonds, I borrowed 120,000 pounds sterling (about $1 million in today’s US dollars) — on credit without investing a single dime. I returned to London with all of the stones and within minutes the deal was done. It was from that point forward that I knew my future was in diamond sales.

How did you land in the diamond industry? In 1977 my wife, Rosi, and I immigrated to Israel to a small town called Kfar Habad. I was looking for trade opportunities and decided to learn diamond polishing. In 1979, the factory I was working at closed down and my wife and I decided to visit family in England. While sitting on a train to London, I read a small ad for diamonds in the Guardian newspaper by the Royal Crown Jeweler, Garrard. I called him and to my surprise he agreed to meet with me. He needed 80 brown pear-shaped diamonds of the same color and size for three tiaras they were making. Although I had never

How do you feel about modified or blended colors in relation to so-called pure colors? One of the best things about natural colors is the wide spread of options available. Everyone connects to specific colors in different ways. For some, a color incites feelings or memories, and for others it inspires them to be unique. My favorites are purplish pink over a straight pink and a straight deep violet over a violet-ish blue. A dream is always in color, and your jewelry shouldn’t be any different. Fashion is beauty, beauty is color, and color is life. liebish.com

SocialLifeMagazine.com

What are the most interesting, exciting, or most beautiful colored diamonds you’ve ever seen? Having been in this field for so long, I have seen some of the most remarkable stones pass through my hands. Among many, a 3.22 carat, pear-shaped, vivid blue, internally flawless stone simply moved me. Its beauty, its shape, and its color blew me away.

rom its perfect location in the charming town of Barga to its dazzling interiors and Italian cuisine, Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa is an ideal Italian escape. This hotel in Tuscany sparkles brilliantly. The property is situated on 1,700 acres of immaculately landscaped grounds in the heart of Tuscany’s unspoiled Serchio Valley. Each room is furnished with warm, wooden furniture with clean lines and decorated in grey and neutral tones, with photographs of the medieval town of Barga hung throughout. Each beautifully decorated room opens onto a balcony that

offers up a dizzying view of sky, hills, and Barga. Just below your view on the ground level, a pool appears to be nestled in the hills of Tuscany and allows for floating and supreme relaxation under the Tuscan sun. Even the ride to the hotel from the airport is magic. The property can be reached via scenic winding country roads that slice through the Italian landscape. RIE+RYN FASHION WITH PURPOSE By Katie Turk

A

nyone will tell you that the most important aspect of any business is your brand . . . and that’s not just a logo. It’s your mission, your vision, who you are, and what you stand for. In the case of rie+ryn, the wildly popular women’s line designed for street to studio wear, well, let’s just say that the inspired founders have hit the sweet spot. Having created a versatile, fun, and always evolving collection, Carrie (Rie) and Taryn (Ryn) brought their mutual love of music, fitness, and fashion together for a line that truly exudes their laidback, purposeful personalities. Social Life is obsessed with the collection and tracked down Carrie to tell us more. In an earlier conversation, you told me that you, and your items, are East Coast with a West Coast sensibility. What does that mean? We are East Coasters by nature. Both Taryn and I were born, raised, and now reside in New York. We constantly gain inspiration from vibrant New York City and beach-burbia, Los Angeles. Those creative energies are what propel the brand. rie+ryn is all about balance. We like the witty and stylistic darker tones of the East and infuse them with the yogic laid back colorful beach vibes of the West. What is the inspiration for your brand? Everything! I’m very artistic and constantly look at the world as a palette. You seem really focused on balance, especially when it comes to being a mom. How does that come through in your designs? We are both working moms and have a lot of passion and pride in that. Understanding your audience in that space is key. We are realists and get it. Our shirts are easy wardrobe pieces for anyone who wants effortless style: I’m Done, Don’t Be Fresh, Be Nice, Gratitude, As I Am, Don’t Sweat It, MILF & COOKIES are all self-interpretive, relatable reminders that we are inspired by our own daughters. It’s also a reminder to smile and laugh and be a little less hard on ourselves and not take ourselves too seriously. It is actually one of the most important lessons we can teach our children. SocialLifeMagazine.com

What are your favorite items? I am loving the new Festival line. The colors are vibrant and the cuts a little more fun and flirtier than usual. What’s next? So much. We have been working on a ready-to-wear line that is almost ready to launch, including blazers and other items that are a bit more sophisticated. Our customer wants to look put together, but also wants comfort and simplicity. We want to put the chic into athletics. Stay tuned. Anything coming down the pike for dads? We believe that if the wife is happy, so is the husband. For now we are mastering that art of “Happy Wife, Happy Life!” Our message is selfacceptance: remember who you are and who you were, always stay young at heart, and love yourself with abandon . . . imperfections and all! Belize: Relax & Explore

Men’s Summer Haircare Tips

Whether you’re seeking to relax and enjoy a beautiful tropical resort and spa or an adrenaline-packed adventure through a jungle and caves, Belize is the right destination for you. Located on the eastern coast of Central America, Belize is a quick direct flight from New York.

Paul Labrecque, a master stylist and the founder of the Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa, shares expert summer haircare tips for men:

The San Ignacio Resort Hotel is a full-service resort in Belize, located in the middle of the jungle in the Cayo district. The luxury hotel is centrally located for adventure tours to nearby Mayan ruins, caves, and zip lining. It affords views of the rainforest from each of its lavish suites. Belize has thousands of caves to explore, including a breathtaking canoe tour through Barton Creek Cave, where you’ll view the Mayan underworld with just the light from your flashlight. It’s a true adventurer’s paradise! After a long day of escapades, melt away any tension with a visit to the San Ignacio Resort Hotel Day Spa, which offers guests innovative Belizean spa treatments. The hot stone massage promotes muscle relaxation with tropical oils, through the placement of smooth, water-heated stones on key points of the body. If you had too much fun in the sun, try a cooling cucumber facial or a soothing mask for sensitive skin. The spa is located adjacent to the pool area, so post treatment, enjoy a dip in the pool while watching exotic birds fly through the jungle.

1

Men tend to over shampoo and under condition and this is the biggest cause of dry frizzy hair. Men should shampoo their hair only when it is dirty, but should condition during every wash.

2

Exposure to a lot of salt, chlorine, and sun will harm your hair. You can apply oil to your hair, like the Paul Labrecque Lemongrass Deep Hair Conditioner. An intensive oil treatment like this will saturate the hair and make it less porous.

THE MALE BAG FATHER FIGURE By Anthony Michael

Whether or not you’re a dad doesn’t matter — June is the month of the man. Look and feel like one with the help of these must-haves of the season.

Schmidt’s Naturals schmidtsnaturals.com

Baxter of California baxterofcalifornia.com Who doesn’t love the ever-expanding Baxter collection of products? This classic Hollywood purveyor of men’s soaps and salves has thankfully eschewed becoming a chestnut of a bygone era. Case in point: Super Shape Recharge Cream ($36), a reinvention of the hero product that started the brand in 1965. The original skin conditioner developed by founder Baxter Finley helped to protect against visible signs of aging, and this reboot goes even further to meet our modern man needs (i.e. extreme aging). Throw a Citrus & Herbal Musk Vitamin Cleansing Bar ($17) into you cart before checking out online. $36

They say using conventional deodorant causes everything from dementia to tooth decay. Awesome, but all-natural sticks don’t stop the stink, right? Well, until Schmidt’s came along. Winning awards for its ability to neutralize odor and absorb wetness, these plant- and mineralderived formulas are the real deal (and they smell great). Guys love Cedarwood and Juniper. For extra staying power, try the Charcoal and Magnesium. $8.99

Tame the Beast getbeast.com The name kinda says it all, but in case there’s any question, Tame the Beast challenges you to “groom boldly.” Of all the men’s lines out there, this one has the most testosterone. From shampoo to shave and beyond, Tame the Beast products arouse and energize. The Extreme Yawp Beard Hair & Body Wash ($24), featuring caffeine, moringa, eucalyptus, and green tea, will put bounce in your . . . well, you get it. And so do they. $11+ Social Life

f ever a category was getting crowded, it would be men’s personal care. The originals are always the best, though, and Anthony brand products continue to get better with age. On the occasion of Father’s Day, the father/namesake of the brand, Anthony Sosnick, spoke to Social Life about his new kids on the block and how the ladies are getting “logical.” Now that the Anthony brand has become something of an icon, what is your focus these days? Creating products that are innovative. There’s a lot of competition, which is good for awareness, but it’s important to create new items that people need but don’t necessarily think about. Such as? No Sweat Body Defense, which is a defensive barrier for your delicate areas and private parts. Also look for shower sheets. You think they’d be common, but they’re not. Essentially, they are a giant wipe, which is perfect for camping, after the gym . . . these are things that are different and go above and beyond shave cream.

Birddogs birddogs.com Why is finding the right pair of shorts so damn hard? Too short, too long, too tight . . . it’s one tog that too many get oh so wrong. Birddogs may have nailed it. Among other things, they feature a generous fit, deep pockets, a kaleidoscope of fun designs and, get this, a ball pouch (“it contours instead of mashes,” they say, “with enough room for a summer squash”). A total score. $54.95+

Tani taniusa.com While Birddogs may preclude the need for undies, most other times it’s best to be safe rather than sorry. Wearing Tani is like wearing nothing at all, however. By placing a premium on luxury fabric, these upscale undies live up to their mantra “the best pair you’ll ever wear.” The Silk Cut Collection features premium Superfine fabric which is unbelievably soft. Don’t stop at the underwear, check out Tani loungewear for an all-day comfort option. $30+ SocialLifeMagazine.com

You refer to your products as gender neutral — aren’t they just for guys? Women are often buying for themselves and their guys. Products like our facial serums or eye creams have all the efficacy of products marketed to women, but at a fraction of the price, so we are always being innovative in our marketing and keeping women in mind when creating our products. What continues to set you apart? Our ingredients — such as aloe vera and vitamins A, C, and E. Everything is allergy- and dermatologist-tested and packaged with a quality that is reflective of our brand. We also want customers to try something first and see if it works. We are big on sampling and events! So what are your top three personal favorite Anthony brand products? Invigorating Rush Hair and Body Wash — it smells like you’re in the Swiss Alps. Our Oil Free Facial Lotion, I use every day! And, our Glycolic Facial Cleanser — it’s a perfectly balanced formulation. anthony.com

DR . ANNA AVALIANI COSMETIC & LASER SURGERY EXPERT By Frances Gormley

A

nna Avaliani, MD, is a leading female expert on the Upper East Side in New York City. She specializes in cosmetic and laser surgery and dermatology, using cutting-edge procedures for the face and body with minimal to absolutely zero downtime. She has simply perfected the art of non-invasive techniques to achieve the most elegant and natural results that are never too extreme or obvious. Her practice philosophy focuses on prevention and slowing down the aging process by using the latest world-renowned skin and laser treatments available on the market. Her high-end clientele includes many models, actors, TV hosts, celebrity makeup artists and hair stylists, fashion designers, and even billionaires. Dr. Avaliani’s practice offers the latest state-of-the art technologies, with more than $1 million of the best laser equipment offered. Her practice belongs to only a handful of practices in the country to be named “Cynosure Center for Excellence” for continually providing the best treatments with the best results for her patients. She is a top-tier cynosure expert and SculpSure provider in NYC. It’s likely that you’ve heard of CoolSculpting to deal with stubborn fat cells, but Dr. Avaliani has moved beyond that to SculpSure because she believes SculpSure is a better, more advanced option for body contouring. Unlike earlier interventions on the market, SculpSure has certain advantages. Zero downtime. Zero discomfort. Only 25 minutes a session. SculpSure is a light-based laser procedure. Warmth and a slight tingling are about all a patient feels during the short session that results in permanent elimination of up to 24% of fat cells in a treated area. Results can show in as soon as six weeks and optimal results occur by twelve weeks. The fat cells are gone forever. This is not true for other interventions that melt rather than destroy fat cells. On your midday break, you can have your treatment and eat your lunch, too. SculpSure has short- and long-term advantages. A re-contoured abdomen, waist, back, and thighs are obviously appealing results, offering the chance to look great now. Because fat stretches skin over time, SculpSure is a way to look great in the future, too, by preventing skin from stretching as well as increasing collagen production. An ever-growing share of Dr. Avaliani’s practice comes from word of mouth. “My consultations are detailed and bespoke for each patient. I am not afraid to turn away a patient if I am not the right fit.” Not everyone is a candidate for every procedure, and not everyone has a realistic expectation. Expertise and honesty are her hallmarks. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Dr. Avaliani completed her residency at NYM/ New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center, one of this country’s top ten medical institutions. She is board-certified in cosmetic laser surgery by the American Board of Laser Surgery and in a specialty of the American Board of Medical Specialties. She is a fellow member of many prestigious medical societies, including the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Society for Laser and Medicine Surgery. She is an attending physician at NYU Medical Center and NYM/New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center. DR . CHRISTOPHER CALAPAI RENOWNED STEM CELL RESEARCHER By Bennett Marcus

I

f you don’t know Dr. Christopher Calapai yet, you should. He is a board-certified family practitioner, specializing in stem cell research, health through nutrition, and anti-aging medicine. And he’s been in practice for 31 years. His celebrity clients include Chris Noth; Mike Tyson; Mickey Rourke; Steven Seagal; Donal Logue, of Fox’s hit series Gotham; and actress and model Anastasia Garvey.

ADVANCES IN STEM CELL THERAPY Medicine has made some huge advances since Dr. Calapai first earned his license back in 1986. The field of stem cell therapy has experienced a huge boom. “Stem cells are the one

type of cell in your body that can become something else because they don’t have their own blueprints,” he explains. They can replace older cells with new cells, making them the ultimate mechanism of repair and anti-aging.”

HEALING THE BODY WITH STEM CELLS As the field has progressed, so have treatments. “The stateof-the-art process for extracting stem cells involves taking some bone marrow from the crest of the hip, which has been numbed for a painless procedure. The marrow is then put into a high-speed centrifuge from which billions of stem cells are extracted. We then inject stem cells directly into a joint or intravenously to reach the organs,” he explains. The beauty of stem cells is their ability to help heal the body.

STEM CELL THERAPY FOR ANTI-AGING As for stem cells’ ability to help with anti-aging efforts, Dr. Calapai points out that they can be used for facial enhancement or used intravenously to help the body’s organs function the way they did years ago. This means that not only can stem cell therapy make you look younger, but it also can make you feel younger from the inside out. “The beauty of stem cells is that they are programmed to seek out damaged areas, so they migrate to wherever they are needed,” he notes. Combined with other efforts in the areas of diet and exercise, the results can be truly dramatic. In other words, when you feel good, you look good, and he can help you with both.

EASY HEALTHY TRICKS To help patients stick with their recommended plans, he offers little tricks, such as having a protein shake before you take a shower and are even tempted to reach for that box of cereal. For people who find it hard to motivate themselves to exercise, he encourages them to simply walk around their block. Because most blocks in New York City are rectangular, it becomes easy to keep track of distance and progress. As for the summer, he says red wine is okay. “You can have a glass or two of wine,” he says. Over the years, he has also adjusted his approach to be more like a counselor compared to a standard doctor.

WHEN BEING COLD IS HOT By Casey Morin

Y

ou probably remember the scene. It was Empire Strikes Back and we were all shocked when Han Solo was dipped into a vat of something that seemingly froze him in place, preserving him for several more scenes to come. Well, a somewhat modified form of what was science fiction more than 30 years ago is now a treatment with confirmed and emerging health benefits: cryotherapy. And, in the Hamptons, the hottest location to reap the rewards of a three-minute treatment is Cool Zone Cryo, located at 760 Montauk Highway in Water Mill. “Many people have the misconception that cryotherapy is only for recovery. The greatest benefits of cryotherapy, whether whole body or targeted, is its anti-inflammatory results,” says Dr. Daniel Fenster, who prides himself on being at the cutting edge of health and wellness in New York for over 30 years. “However, that isn’t the only benefit. From weight loss and skin tightening to using it as an immunity booster or even mood elevator, anyone can see the benefits of cryotherapy.” Dr. Fenster is among a small group of elite doctors who would know. In an effort to fill a gap in the healthcare field, Dr. Fenster is the Clinic Director and lead Chiropractor of Complete Wellness NYC founded in 2007, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. His commitment to treating the “whole patient” has proved essential to finding solutions where conventional approaches failed in the past. His vision is to treat patients with a unified synergy by merging essential services. Of the most cutting edge procedures available, cryotherapy is what he recommends. “What most people hear about is the way cryotherapy can be used to help recover more quickly from athletics and activity,” he says. “What I know now is that it is much more than that; it’s a growing wellness procedure, and it’s here to stay,” assures Dr. Fenster. “Just as icing is not a fad, and that’s been around for a long time. This is just a different modality to really ice your body. The direct cold on a body part causes the body to release chemicals and hormones which reduces inflammation internally.” According to Dr. Fenster, the procedure is safe, and most people benefit in some way. There are contraindications, however; so it’s important to take the time to fill out the paperwork and speak to Dr. Fenster about any health condition — before entering the chamber. The procedure can also increase the release of endorphins, leading to mood elevation and a decrease in depression. SocialLifeMagazine.com

“Cryotherapy also stimulates the brown adipose tissue, which is fat that insulates our organs — and stimulating the brown adipose tissue increases immunity,” says Dr. Fenster. The cold also stimulates collagen production, therefore tightening the skin. Facial rejuvenation cryotherapy focuses on the face and neck and is another option for those looking for a more youthful appearance without going under the knife. Also on the list, it’s been reported to the doctor that clients had improved sleep. So, the procedure is a boon for insomniacs looking for a good night’s rest. If you are interested in cryotherapy for its fitness rewards, when should you get your cold on? “Some people like to do it for recovery. But, because of the oxygenation to the blood, others like to do it before working out,” he says. “I personally do it before . . . and I do it every day. So before is also after!” coolzonecryo.com completewellnessnyc.com

NOT YOUR MOTHER’S (OR FATHER’S) COSMETIC OPTIONS By Janelle Cross

F

or Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, one of Long Island’s most celebrated cosmetic surgeons, it’s already been an exceptionally busy year for. In April, Dr. Greenberg was named one of only 500 doctors worldwide to receive the RealSelf 500 Award, a prestigious award honoring the top influencers on RealSelf — the most trusted online destination to get informed about elective cosmetic procedures and to find and connect with doctors and clinics. The accolade was preceded in February with the top vote for “Best Cosmetic Surgeon” by LIWeddings. This was the fifth consecutive year that Dr. Greenberg garnered the top spot among brides, and an honor that he doesn’t take lightly. “Our patients come to us to ensure they look and feel their best for their big day. Whether it is to feel confident and beautiful in their dream dress, or to get their skin glowing and picture perfect, we use the most advanced techniques and technologies to help brides achieve their aesthetic goals,” says Dr. Greenberg. “We truly enjoy helping our brides, grooms, parents, and even their bridal parties look and feel great." With wedding (and summer body) season in full swing, we wanted to touch base with the famed doctor who routinely is called upon by TV personalities and journalists for his expert opinion. It’s been said that looking great these days is a lot easier than it was just ten years ago. How have things changed and what are people doing differently? There are more procedures than ever before to help patients achieve the look they desire, including breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction, tummy tuck, fat transfer, cellulite management, body lift, facelift, and eyelid lift. What’s really great is that people are now able to combine surgical with non-surgical procedures to produce amazing and significant improvements in their appearance. What continues to be a most common procedure? Breast augmentation, and the latest techniques offer our patients a truly ‘rapid recovery.’ Patients can experience mini-

mal swelling and bruising, and a notably decreased recovery time. Recognizing the need for patients to quickly return to their normal activities, ‘rapid recovery’ ensures both excellent results and faster recovery time. In addition, there is a continued increase in the number of women having children at a later age who are seeking to obtain their pre-pregnancy figure and choose a tummy tuck along with a breast augmentation or a breast lift. Bathing suit weather is finally upon us — what are you hearing from your patients? Many patients of all ages and sizes are asking, ‘What can really be done to help get rid of cellulite?’ The answer is Cellfina or Cellulaze. Both treatments eliminate cellulite from treated areas with minimal downtime. Cellulaze is performed under anesthesia, while Cellfina is performed using a local anesthetic, and both provide a smoother, natural result with little downtime. What are some other non-surgical treatments that can prime the fountain of youth? Some patients want to look younger and more refreshed without surgery. For these patients we offer injectables, which are quite effective in reducing lines and wrinkles on the face, and can now even eliminate fullness under the chin without surgery. Exciting products, including Botox, Kybella, Voluma, and Restylane, have expanded the market and increased the options available to those people who would like to immediately reduce wrinkles and soften facial creases, frown lines, and crow’s feet. Kybella can eliminate fat that collects under the jawline. Even fillers are providing patients with less downtime with products like Volbella for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the mouth, and the newest injectable offering, Vollure, which is used for the minor correction of nasolabial folds. Both products boast ‘red carpet ready’ treatment, and most patients return immediately to their daily activities and can be ready to go out the same evening. DAVID FOX, MD & JILL CARUSO, RN DIMINISHING THE SIGNS OF AGING By Bennett Marcus

VEIN SPECIALIST NYC’s top vascular surgeon, Dr. David Fox, not only treats the full spectrum of vein disease in legs, this board-certified physician is sought out for more specialized work. “We also take care of veins in exotic locations,” says Dr. Fox. Many people get spider veins on their face, around their nose; where the nose meets the cheek is a very common area. Some people develop veins on their forehead, on their temples, or on the side of their head. “Veins on the hands and the face are not going to be taken care of by the average practitioner. Exotic veins are the domain of the specialist,” says Dr. Fox. Additionally, some people have prominent veins on their feet, and Dr. Fox can make feet have a more youthful appearance, too.

NON-INVASIVE TECHNIQUES Dr. Fox uses state-of-the-art non-invasive techniques — a vast improvement over the traditional “vein stripping,” which is an uncomfortable procedure requiring a lot of recovery time. He instead performs what is called an endovenous laser ablation, by which he can treat the vein in a minimally invasive way through a needle hole incision. This is an in-office procedure that results in an easy recovery. “The patient is up and walking the same day,” Dr. Fox says.

YOUNGER HANDS Working alongside Dr. Fox at his Upper East Side practice is Jill Caruso, RN, a board-certified aesthetic nurse who specializes in non-invasive and minimally invasive anti-aging treatments and clinical skin care. She softens the signs of aging by using injectable fillers, neurotoxins, chemical peels, lasers, and Kybella. “Less is more” is Jill Caruso’s philosophy for using cosmetic injectables, keeping a client looking like his or her natural, beautiful self and not overdoing it. foxvein.com

DR . TIMOTHY CHASE IT’S ALL IN THE SMILE By Jacob Puck

T

he perfect smile. It’s something that we all want to achieve, but cutting through the noise of treatment options, from offthe-shelf all the way to myriad surgical options, can be daunting. Those in the know repeatedly turn to Dr. Timothy Chase, a practicing partner at SmilesNY, which is a leading practice in restorative and cosmetic dentistry in Manhattan. Dr. Chase is known for being at the forefront of all the latest advances. A prominent figure in the media, Dr. Chase offers expert advice as a cosmetic dentist to New York magazines and TV programs. He has appeared on MTV, Lifetime Network’s Balancing Act, E!Online, the NY Daily News, In Touch Weekly, Teen Vogue, New Beauty, and many other fashion and beauty magazines. Now, it’s Social Life’s turn. Is it scientifically proven that a better smile gets you ahead? Absolutely. Published studies demonstrate the importance of a great smile and the immense effect this has on a person’s personal and professional life. One study in particular used imagery of digitally altered teeth and had participants guess what a person does for work, whether they are successful, and how old they are. People with whiter, straighter, and cleaner teeth were perceived as younger and more successful. There is so much in the world of cosmetic dentistry, from the multi-billion-dollar industry of whitening, all the way to a complete makeover using crowns, implants, bridges, and veneers. What is a good example of something in between that can get some good results? Adult Invisalign is a great example and is better and faster than ever. They are the adult braces for people who want to focus on specific areas of their smile that may have shifted since their days of wearing all the headgear. The aligners are made of clear, smooth plastic that are nearly undetectable when worn. What is the biggest misconception people have about veneers? With veneers, patients often worry that they’ll have to get their SocialLifeMagazine.com

teeth ground significantly in order to have veneers applied. The truth is, with the techniques we have today, the tooth preparation can be minimal, especially if the teeth are in relatively good shape. In many cases, we remove just a conservative amount to get your expected smile. What do you recommend to someone who wants something low cost to test the waters? At-home teeth whiteners are a great way to ease into cosmetic smile improvement, even store varieties, as long as they are sold by a well-known brand. They are typically safe, have been tested, and there’s no reason not to try them out. While what we offer in our office is quicker, higher quality, and can result in less discomfort, if you’re on a budget, whitening is a great place to start. So, better teeth may get you that elusive job or that perfect date, all things being equal? Can’t argue with science: a better smile can lead to your success! It’s a small price to pay for a chance to outshine competition. What do you offer that your competitors don’t? One of the factors that distinguishes our practice is the time we take to establish a relationship with our patients and ascertain their dental goals. We perform a comprehensive examination to assess their oral health. We then create a strategy for optimal dental health together with our patients. Our technology is cutting-edge and practicing partners have decades of experience. SmilesNY is equipped with the most up-to-date technology available on the market. We offer the Trios digital scanner to take impressions, so no more goopy mess. We use computerized bite analysis, digital x-rays, and quiet electric dental drills for the most comfortable visit to the dentist that you’ll ever experience. It really comes down to experience, art, and science. smilesny.com 220 East 63rd Street, Lobby F 888.997.5272

You will begin to notice results in the weeks after your procedure. What are the advantages to using CoolSculpting? The average fat reduction is around 20% for suitable candidates. There is no surgeon’s knife and no anesthesia required. The procedure doesn’t produce any discomfort and there is no downtime or scarring. CoolSculpting is most popularly used to treat bulges in the stomach area, love handles, upper and lower back areas. These are also the parts of the body that responds best to the treatment. THE DUNES THE DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD OF BEING RICH AND SUCCESSFUL WHEN TRYING TO GET SOBER By Dr. Nicholas Kardaras Executive Director at The Dunes

T

o paraphrase Winston Churchill, addiction is sort of like a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. We tend to know it when we see it, but understanding the complexity of what I like to call the perfect storm of addiction is not so simple. Academics and researchers often debate the causes — the etiology — of addiction; everything from genetic predisposition, social learning, neurochemical imbalances and/or a lack of loving and consistent nurturing. There is no shortage of theories as to the “why” of addiction. But one thing that everyone who works with addiction does agree upon is that it’s the great equalizer; neither wealth, nor power, nor education, nor physical strength, nor even strength of character are enough to immunize a person from the insidious and self-destructive ravages of addiction. In fact, paradoxically, wealth, power, and high IQ often work against a person struggling with addiction. Why? Simply put, those assets are also the mechanisms that can feed into and amplify the denial that there is a problem (i.e. “I can’t be an addict — I’m still pulling down big money in my career”… or “I can’t be an addict — I’m a well-educated doctor/lawyer/

hedge funder — so I’m too smart to get addicted”). Worse, the trappings of success can not only keep the addict in denial, but they can also keep the addict from seeking treatment for fear of being outed and having their professional reputations destroyed. Ashamed and fearing professional implosion, the “successful” addict continues to use — and suffer — in silence. But let’s not make any mistake about it — addicts are indeed suffering. I have seen the devastation of addiction: the wrecked families; the hospitalizations; the loss of jobs; the emotional pain and suffering — and the deaths. No one voluntarily chooses such a self-destructive path. What we know is that people predisposed toward addiction can fall down the rabbit hole of soul-crushing addiction if they walk down the path of drug and alcohol experimentation. Yet the family members — who are also greatly suffering as a result of their loved one’s addiction — just see what appears to be a never-ending series of selfish behaviors, oftentimes not understanding the compulsive and irrational nature of this mental disorder. And the consensus among the mental health and medical Social Life



community is that this is indeed a disorder, oftentimes with accompanying underlying emotional and psychological underpinnings. Thus, the solution is meaningful treatment. But ego also tends to be a barrier to treatment for the rich and powerful; If I can run this successful company, I can certainly fix my problem on my own, the thinking goes. And, for better or worse, that same ego also can prevent the successful addict from going to traditional institutional-types of rehab. They want a more individualized, discreet, comfortable, and humane experience. It was with this understanding — the fact that successful people often stayed trapped in their addiction, fearing professional repercussions and averse to traditional cookie-cutter rehabs — that the Dunes was formed almost seven years ago. I was teaching the treatment of addiction as a clinical professor at Stony Brook Medicine when I had the opportunity to meet Joe McKinsey, an Amagansett resident who wanted to open an addiction treatment program on the East End. Joe had been sober for over 30 years and had literally helped hundreds of people get sober over the years. But he also realized that there weren’t many quality treatment options for professionally “successful” addicts — not just on the East End of Long Island, but on the entire East Coast. Joe, having suffered through hospital institutional treatment himself, wanted to offer a more humane and compassionate approach that endeavors to re-tether the struggling addict to meaningful social contact and treatment — and not the punitive experiences that a “war on drugs” necessitates. Joe also forged a powerful relationship with Harvard’s Dr. Howard Shaffer — one of the world’s foremost addiction experts and, using many of Dr. Shaffer’s protocols and insights, the Dunes East Hampton was born. At the Dunes, clients get treated by a team of well-trained caring professionals who try to address each person’s unique “perfect storm” of addiction by using not only traditional psychotherapy, but also a variety of holistic approaches as well, such as acupuncture, yoga, Reiki, mindfulness meditation, and equine therapy as they seek to find sobriety and create balance in their lives. But a stay at the Dunes is just the beginning of the process. If clients truly want long-term sobriety, they have to be willing to engage in continuing self-care and the daily discipline and vigilance that is the key to sustained sobriety — no matter how smart or successful they are. If they can do that, we have seen miracles happen. The Dunes East Hampton 201 Fort Pond Blvd #1, East Hampton 877.657.6069 theduneseasthampton.com SocialLifeMagazine.com

THE INCOMPARABLE CHRISTINE EVANGELISTA By Christine Montanti Photography by Tiffany Walling McGarity and John McGarity

Actress, singer, dancer, musician, and animal rights advocate Christine Evangelista has officially arrived. The breakout star of E!’s hottest new scripted series, The Arrangement, plays an up-andcoming Hollywood actress, Megan Morrison, on the dramatic thriller that involves a marriage contract and a cult-like religion. Known for her TV and film roles on The Walking Dead, The Intern, and Bleed for This, Christine can’t wait to see what drama-filled twists and turns will be happening next on the show’s second season. She revels in playing the complex character Megan on the hit TV show and is fiercely determined to push her acting capabilities to the limits. The unparalleled beauty is a native New Yorker and was destined to be an actress. As a young girl, Christine was an aspiring dancer when she first started experimenting with acting. She spent a lot of time with her father, who was a very technical man. He built computers and owned many different high-tech cameras. He taught Christine how to operate the video camera he used to tape her dance performances. Christine enjoyed the technology so much, she started writing and creating short movies, prompting her to audition. Both Christine’s parents worked very long days and were unable to take her on auditions; her father worked for the FDNY and her mom was a nurse. As a teenager, Christine enrolled in a performing arts school and joined a program that enabled her to do off-Broadway shows every day after school. “Dancing provided

me with discipline and a very strong work ethic. I love having a dance background; it really helps me with expression. I met my manager when I was a senior in high school and was doing an off-Broadway play. She has been around forever and is the person who started me in film and television. We share a vision for my career, and she is like family to me. I am very lucky to have her in my life.” Christine explains. Christine’s extensive acting work frequently brings her to Los Angeles. When asked where she prefers to reside, Christine explains why she loves living in New York. “New York forces you to define yourself in a way I wouldn’t be able to living in Los Angeles. It’s so multicultural. I love how it is removed from the Hollywood scene, especially because of the premise of my television show, where everyone talks about glamour and power couples. I really just try and stay out of it. It’s not my scene. I love what I do, and I love being an actress, but there is an ugly side to that world. I like to remove myself from it as much as possible and to be around real people, and people I grew up with. Some of my friends are actors, but the majority of my good friends aren’t, and I think it is important to surround yourself with people who ground you.” Aside from Christine’s many other talents, she is a devoted animal rights advocate. Just days before this cover photo shoot, she returned from a global charity mission in Thailand, where she is an ambassador

for Veterinarians International, a non-profit organization founded by a Sag Harbor resident, Dr. Scarlett Magda. The mission focuses on providing optimal animal healthcare to captive elephants that suffer from serious, systemic abuse and neglect by humans. Christine traveled to Surin, Thailand, to launch the organization's latest initiative. The mission was led by Dr. Geraldo Martinez, a worldrenowned expert in animal training, to help the private owners use better methods to care for the elephants. The day of Christine’s photo shoot is a Wednesday, early in the morning. Our location is the 21 West End, a luxury residential building in Riverside Center, which offers incredible views of the city’s skyline and the Hudson River. I’m standing in the vast, modern lobby, reviewing the final details of this magazine’s photo shoot, when Christine arrives. As she walks toward me, I notice that she possesses a subtle confidence that is incredibly rare. There’s this kind of magnetic energy swirling around her that makes you stop dead in your tracks. It forces you to look at her, and when you do, you’re captivated by her natural beauty. Together, we begin touring the spectacular locations of the building’s indoor 60-foot pool, and the art deco lounge. As I describe the types of shots and looks for the day's photo shoot, Christine, a woman who is definitely not afraid to express herself, communicates her preferences and individual style. When she speaks to me, she is extremely eloquent and engaging. It’s as if she’s a friend I have known forever; it’s hard to believe we have just met. Our interview takes place in a cozy den in one of the building’s cutting-edge apartments, which features spectacular panoramic views of the city. Christine, dressed in a tan lace romper and white

leather jacket, looks exceptionally beautiful as she speaks about her current relationship status. While filming the first season of The Arrangement on location in Vancouver, Christine split with her longtime boyfriend — her first real love. “It was really crushing for me when we split up, and was one of the hardest things I have ever dealt with. We grew apart because we wanted different things out of life. It’s sad when something ends, especially when you have a mutual respect and love for one another. He was very supportive of my career, and it was great to have a stable force around. He was someone who was really supportive of what I wanted to do. After our split, I realized that this is something I don’t necessarily need right now.” As we continue to converse, Christine confesses to me that dating can be very daunting. “Having someone who is intelligent is very important to me. I like someone with a great sense of humor and someone who has a drive that is equal to mine. I also like someone who has a strong family background. Having a strong family background is very important to me because that is something I have. I've always been a monogamous person, and I am a long-term relationship kind of girl.” Often, Christine’s work takes her away from home for several months at a time, so she doesn’t mind getting involved in a long-distance relationship. “There is a two and half week rule, meaning we can’t go two and a half weeks without seeing each other. I really have never been that girl who needs to be around someone all the time. I am a very social person, but, at the same time, I have this loner quality to me. I prefer my space and my own time.” When Christine is not working, she prefers to spend more time Social Life

F E AT U R E S in the Hamptons than in New York City. In fact, immediately after this photo shoot, Christine left New York City for the Hamptons. Although she lives in Manhattan, her family has a house in the Hamptons and they are transitioning to live here full time. She loves to spend holidays here. “The fall is absolutely beautiful in the Hamptons; there is no traffic,” Christine says smiling. “It is an escape and I like to be with family. It’s a good vibe in the Hamptons, and it reminds me of my childhood. I am a very nostalgic person. My parents are transitioning to be in the Hamptons full time, and I want to spend as much time with them as possible. Also, I have a lot of friends in the Hamptons.” A few days after Christine’s photo shoot, we decide to meet again for dinner at 75 Main, a chic restaurant in Southampton. Christine, having just returned from a barbecue in Montauk, looks equally as beautiful without any makeup as she did the day of her photo shoot when she had been primped by a glam squad. Sitting at a private table in the rear of the Miami-styled restaurant, I ask Christine what it was like growing up in the ’90s with her supermodel icon cousin, Linda Evangelista. “She was literally all over the place,” Christine says. “Physically all over the place and all over magazine covers.” Christine goes on to tell me that she and Linda both happen to come from very similar immigrant Italian backgrounds. She says that they both are from hardworking, blue collar families who have the same strong work ethic. Linda’s persistent work demonstrated to Christine that any career goal is possible if you put the time and effort into it. “Linda was always this really glamorous woman who was so devoted to her craft of modeling.” Christine explains. I ask Christine if Linda offers her any advice about being in the limelight. “Linda warns me to be conscious about the people I surround myself with,” she replies. During the summer Christine will be leaving New York to shoot the second season of The Arrangement in Vancouver. Christine and I converse about what it's like working on the E! scripted series with her gorgeous costar, Josh Henderson. Josh plays mega movie star Kyle West and the duo have an amazing chemistry on screen. I ask Christine if the chemistry exists between the two off-screen as well. “He’s definitely a specimen,” Christine replies, laughing. “The two of us are very professional people; we put our work first, and we work well together. You have to keep your work separate from your personal life, but we do have a lot of fun. The days are very long on set, 18 hours, and you have to have fun because it gets totally exhausting.” As we finish eating and wrap up our conversation, Christine candidly confesses to me, “My parents didn’t have the ability to go out and dream and do something as risky as I am doing. If you know me, you can trust me, and you can get a sense of what I am about. I care about my reputation. I love acting, and I love people. The desire to act is natural, the technique isn’t, and this is something that I need to continue to explore. There are so many things with the mind that I haven’t experienced yet, but I still need to be able to play. There are so many stories about people full of expression and texture, and these are some of the things that really made me want to be an acSocialLifeMagazine.com

PORSCHE CARS NORTH AMERICA WHAT BECOMES A LEGEND MOST? By Jacob Puck

J

acob Harb, the Vice President, Area East, of Porsche Cars North America, couldn’t be more thrilled that the brand he represents is the presenting sponsor of Polo Hamptons, a match and event on June 24 in Southampton. “When I think about how majestic polo is, and how one must achieve a perfect balance between athleticism and precision to win, it really seems like a perfect fit,” says Harb, who plans to be at the event this later this month. “If you think about riding a horse and hitting the ball, it’s all about balance and precision. There are a lot of parallels between polo and Porsche, and especially the Panamera.” While Porsche Cars North America is the exclusive U.S. importer of Porsche 911, 718 Boxster, and 718 Cayman sports cars as well as Macan and Cayenne SUVs, the most vibrant feathers in the portfolio’s cap at the moment are Panamera sports sedans. The ultimate sports car, the silhouette and proportions of the new Panamera models are more Porsche than ever. Clearly perceived rounded transitions, powerful muscles, and a sharpened sports car silhouette emphasize the precision of the new design. Porsche touts that courage changes everything, and that “A vision is only ever as courageous as those who make it a reality.” For those who love their Porsche, they won’t have to work up too much courage to drive away in this stunner. “The Panamera will

figure prominently at the event, and that’s not a coincidence. Our flagship sedan, it’s the second generation after an extremely successful first generation,” says Harb. “Having just been delivered in March, early customer feedback has echoed critical acclaim. From a pure product perspective, it delivers on everything that is Porsche. It’s the four-door sports car that every other brand aspires to be.” According to Harb, the car has improved in every way, from performance to efficiency to technology, including “an 12.3-inch touch display that makes you feels like you have a TV right up front with you,” and full integration to boot. The recent Panamera launch has been well received by Hamptonites, who seem to have a particular love affair with the brand. “It never ceases to amaze me how much of a market share we have. I don’t have quantifiable facts, but let’s just say that it’s unprecedented,” says Harb. “The Hamptons are an ideal demographic for us. I’d like to say that Porsche is the car of choice in the Hamptons, because everything about the Hamptons fits our brand perfectly.” Including polo. With over 400 guests attending Polo Hamptons, the unforgettable afternoon will feature the thrill of the polo match, an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, seating, and press. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to see polo back in the Hamptons,” says Harb. “And we’re even happier to have the opportunity to partner with such an amazing event.” Social Life

Jacob Harb

Jacob Harb is a car guy — albeit of the luxury type. Beginning his career at BMW, he lithely moved from engineering to marketing, all the while enhancing the BMW brand in an influential market. Harb was head of BMW i, including the vehicle’s launch in the U.S. market. Today, as Porsche’s Vice President, Area East, Harb oversees operations of 51 privately owned Porsche dealerships. A Manhattanite, he gets out to the Hamptons as often as possible. And, he says, there’s no place he’d rather be on June 24 than Polo Hamptons in Southampton. On the eve of the hottest party of the summer, we wanted to know more about what drives Harb, and, frankly, what he drives. So, the Panamera is the new “it” car. Is it your vehicle of choice in the portfolio? Well, as everyone knows, the 911 is the epicenter of the brand. I have to confess that I got out of a Panamera yesterday and picked up a 911 GTS Cabriolet. For me, it’s a tie. It’s always good to get back to the 911 regardless of how sensational the SocialLifeMagazine.com

Panamera is. They are both great representatives of the brand. The 911 is a true sports car, one for enthusiasts. The connectivity you have with the car is great. On the flip side, the Panamera is everything you want in technology, luxury, and performance. Why not have both? What’s your favorite thing about the Hamptons? The landscape is stunning. I love just picking a random road and going for a ride. I know that sounds like a cliché given my work, but I really just love getting out and seeing the landscape. Anything in particular? Of course the ocean is beautiful, but the farms are amazing. I love coming upon the random lavender scents, the rolling hills, and trees. It’s all great. Do you exceed the posted speed limits? I do! I do everywhere! What are your thoughts on attending the match and event at Polo Hamptons? I think it’s going to be the signature event of the summer. Everyone is very excited to be part of the return of polo to the Hamptons, because the two really are synonymous.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF THE SOUTHAMPTON ANIMAL SHELTER FOUNDATION By Jean Shafiroff

O

n Saturday, July 8, the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) will host its annual Unconditional Love Gala. Always an elegant and favorite gala of the summer community, this year’s event promises not to disappoint! Jean Shafiroff interviews Jonathan McCann, the president of the board of SASF. Jonathan has been rescuing animals for more than fifty years. SASF is more than a shelter for homeless dogs and cats. It is a community resource for responsible pet ownership, where a bond between people and animals is promoted and nourished through adoption, medical care, behavior training, and education. Last year SASF arranged adoptions for more than 900 animals, spayed or neutered over 3,000, and saved over 200 from overcrowded shelters outside our area. SASF is ranked in the top 10% of shelters nationally. This is the result of its 97% live-release rate. It is the only openadmissions shelter on Long Island’s East End; therefore, all homeless animals in Southampton Township, regardless of age, are accepted. SASF’s dedication to animal welfare and to the community is boundless. The shelter’s work is limited only by its ability to seek successful funding. What are some of the biggest challenges you are facing as an animal shelter today? The rising cost of veterinary care and the overpopulation of outdoor community cats impact our ability to accommodate the influx of animals arriving at our doorstep. To address these issues, the shelter has expanded its veterinary services by providing low-cost wellness examinations and dental cleanings. Social Life

In addition, our mobile clinic van provides convenient lowcost surgeries for pets of residents living in underserved areas of Suffolk County. Last year, we started the ADVO-CAT Program, which has enabled us to spay or neuter over 1,000 feral cats in Southampton and neighboring communities. Do you partner with other non-profit organizations in the community? An important part of our mission is community outreach. We have found that interaction with our animals can be very therapeutic. In addition, this showcases our available pets. We regularly partner with the Cleary School for the Deaf and Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, where up to 12 students from each organization intern at the shelter. Our staff brings animals to visit the Southampton Fresh Air Home several times throughout the summer. The campers end their summer experience with a visit to our facility. Throughout the year, local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, the Hampton Bays Public Schools, and the Hampton Bays Public Library raise funds and collect donations to support the animals under our care.

Sandra Powers, Sony Schotland, CB Grubb

I have heard that these programs are very successful. Tom Naro, the executive director of the Fresh Air Home, recently told me that visits from SASF are a favorite activity for their campers. Interaction with your dogs and cats and great staff make these days a highlight of the summer season. Yes, these programs have been extremely successful. More and more groups keep asking to participate. Do you have any upcoming events the community should know about? Yes. Our eighth annual Unconditional Love Gala will be on July 8, at a beautiful private seaside estate on Gin Lane. Always very popular, this year’s gala promises to be a wonderful evening! Chuck Scarborough will emcee and entertainment will be provided by the Chris Norton Band. We will honor you, Jean, for your hard work and continual support of the shelter. We will also honor Sony Schotland, a founder of the shelter. Funds raised from this event will support the programs and services we provide to the community. NIGHTLIFE By Joe Alexander with Photographs by Patrick McMullan

The Lost City of Z & Alien: Covenant Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy gives a breakthrough performance as a macho soldier of fortune in The Lost City of Z, which is based on the best-selling book. He said, “I’m usually the guy who knocks everyone out in order to get the girl.” His co-star Robert Pattinson, of Twilight, finally escapes the vampire series with a strong performance in this epic adventure film. Pattinson confessed, “I don’t know if I could ever really be cast in a heartthrob role apart from Twilight.” The poetically shot film focuses on British explorer Percy Fawcett’s attempt to find an ancient, fabled city in the Amazon. Alien: Covenant answers the questions raised in the first Alien film, released in 1979. The scary movie stars Katherine Waterston and Michael Fassbender, who confides, “I could never swim in the ocean after seeing Jaws.”… His co-star James Franco quips, “Sometimes when I’m sad I talk to my cat, and he reminds me that I’m James Franco; then we dance.”

Baywatch & Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Nineties’ TV smash hit Baywatch has been re-made into a fulllength movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kelly Rohrbach, Priyanka Chopra, and a hunky Zac Efron, who said “If the worst people can say about me is that I’m gay, I’ll be fine. I can handle it.” Pamela Anderson, the show’s original blonde sexpot, said, “I’m a complete romantic — it’s why I always get married. Someone should really stop me.” … Guardians of the Galaxy 2 stars include Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and Chris Pratt, who joked, “I got punched by Orlando Bloom, and I’m so embarrassed. I’d rather get farted on by David Hasselhoff.” His co-star Zoe Saldana said, “Growing up, my dolls were doctors and on secret missions. I had Barbie goes Rambo.”

Guild Hall’s Academy of the Arts Director Susan Stroman, writer Philip Schultz, and landscape architect Edwina von Gal (who said, “I have developed wonderful relationships with countless people and their gardens.”) were honored at Guild Hall’s 32nd Academy of the Arts Achievement Awards. Artist Eric Fischl was the evening’s charming host, and he introduced Andrea Grover, the Guild’s exciting, new executive director. Among the guests was the delightful Blythe Danner, who just happens to be Gwyneth Paltrow’s mother. She told me, “I live in New York, and when you’re older and widowed, it’s the perfect place because you

MARK BARON PERFECTION AND TENACITY RULE THE DAY By Jacob Puck PERFECTIONIST “I never accept mediocrity when it comes to finding the right house for the buyer or when representing the seller, whether it’s the showing, the photography, the research . . . I insist that it be perfect. It’s something that’s developed in my personality over the years. I don’t like to have to do things twice. My philosophy is to do things 110 percent the first time rather than put in a half-hearted effort, because it will come back to you later and you’ll need to fix it. A lot of that comes from my activities: if you don’t tie that knot right the first time, that sail will come loose and you’ll need to do it again. Or, if you don’t do the right safety checks before someone goes SCUBA diving, someone will get hurt. In all the years I’ve taught diving, no one has ever gotten hurt. It’s that care and diligence that I’ve adapted to real estate.”

M

ark Baron is an icon who stands above all others in the crowded world of real estate in the Hamptons. Based at Brown Harris Stevens in Bridgehampton, his high level of professionalism, his mastery of the real estate market, his international background, and his dynamic personality rank him as a top producer who has repeatedly earned top distinctions among North American sales associates. But, while his technique may be a lesson in skill, it’s his intuition, extra-curricular experience, and personal credos that truly set him apart. For instance, this year his strategy is focused on collaboration, and he has partnered with Jane Babcook to offer a different approach to home buying. His experience, on the other hand, informs his every move. Originally from Southern Africa, he’s an avid outdoorsman and adventurer. Mark and his wife, Susan, lived and sailed throughout the Caribbean before opening art galleries in Palm Beach and Bridgehampton. Making the Hamptons their year round home in 2001, they reside in Sag Harbor, while continuing to vacation at their property in St. John and taking on adventures that others can only dream of. Social Life asked Mark what two elements of his personality describe his work, and, without missing a beat, he shared some very personal things.

TENACITY “I simply never give up, and I have a very personal story that exemplifies this. My wife and I were caught in a hurricane off the coast of Cuba, and the U.S. base in Guantanamo offered to come and pick us up by helicopter. The problem for me was that they wouldn’t be able to take the boat in. We decided to tough it out, and spent 19 hours navigating the storm. We just wouldn’t give up, and we made it to Guantanamo and saved the boat . . . and ourselves. It’s a great personal example of perseverance, and I do the same with listings. My clients know that I am there for them 100 percent from beginning to end, and it’s what sets me apart.” Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker mbaron@bhshamptons.com 631.537.4333 c/ 631.800.1125

SCOTLAND HISTORY HOPPING By Joe Alexander

Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theater, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City. His stories have been featured in numerous national magazines, including Haute Living. Joe lives in Manhattan and Southampton with his Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Cornelia and Webster.

CAMERON HOUSE In Scotland’s Trossachs National Park, it’s hard to believe you’re just thirty minutes from the bustle of Glasgow. The centerpiece of the park, 700+ square miles of pristine terrain, is the famous Loch Lomond, and on its banks sits Cameron House, a five-star country house resort, whose founding dates back to the 15th century. Loch Lomond itself is 24 miles long with more than thirty islands, one of which houses Scotland’s oldest nudist colony; but no worries, they aren’t visible from the hotel. In fact, no one has spotted a “sun worshiper” here for decades.

STAR STUDDED REGISTER You’re likely to run into a star here; among the rich and famous who have stayed at Cameron House are newly minted Nobel Prize-winner Bob Dylan, Oscar Award-winner Clint Eastwood, Grammy Award-winners Bono and Pete Townshend, and the list goes on and on. Historical figures like Princess Margaret, former U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Emperor Napoleon III’s wife, Eugénie de Montijo, whose official title was the Em-

press consort of the French, also have spent time at the Victorian-era mansion that now occupies the site. Despite its size, with 132 rooms and 90 luxury lodges that are both timeshares and rentals, Cameron House is a cozy and comfortable establishment. Its more than 100 wooded acres include two golf courses, a spa, and a Michelin-starred restaurant.

WHISKY SUITES The lobby has a welcoming fireplace and there’s a gigantic clock behind the front desk that reminds you to take advantage of every precious minute you get to spend at what is one of Scotland’s most luxurious and beautiful hotels. If you book in advance, you should stay in the part of the house called the Whisky Suites, which has its own entrance up a grand staircase with original curlicue railings. We stayed in the same suite where Rod Stewart and his wife, Penny Lancaster, lodged recently. The space is huge and features an old-fashioned claw-foot bathtub overlooking the loch.

Whisky Suites Bedroom Suite at the Cameron House on Loch Lomond

ROOM WITH A VIEW We knew we were really in the Scottish countryside, as the suite was decked out in crisp tartan plaids. The walls were decorated with original still life paintings, antlers, and animal heads. The view is stupendous from every window of every room, even the bathroom. This perfectly appointed suite has it all: a red lacquered dressing room, an enormous bathroom with double sinks, a sitting room with two couches and a round table for tea or dining by the window. One of the two entrances leads directly to the spacious bedroom done up in shades of red, beige, and green. The four-poster bed is both romantic and comfortable, and both flat-screen TVs have CNN.

MICHELIN-STARRED CHEF MARTIN WISHART Cameron House boasts several dining options, including the Michelin-starred Martin Wishart at Loch Lomond. Edinburgh culinary star Martin Wishart actually left the kitchens at Cameron House when he was 20 to hone his craft working under master chefs, including Albert Roux, Marco Pierre White, Charlie Trotter, Michel Roux, and John Burton Race. So, it is fitting that he has returned with his own acclaimed Michelin-star dining spot, Martin Wishart at Loch Lomond, serving elegant cuisine with dramatic lake and mountain views. Dishes are updated regularly using seasonal ingredients. A series of tasting menus, including vegetarian options, are offered, and these may be paired with excellent vintage wines.

CAMERON GRILL The next morning we had breakfast at the Cameron Grill. The full English buffet is superior. The savory porridge is true ambrosia. This is also the hotel’s main dining room and the chef does wonders with meat, fowl, and fish. For dinner I had a memorable starter of local scallops with braised short ribs followed by a delicious surf-and-turf entrée with Isle of Skye lobster and SocialLifeMagazine.com

a piece of charbroiled filet mignon. (The hotel is a member of the Scotch Beef Club, and uses only beef from grass-fed Scottish cattle raised on a fourth-generation family farm.) My friend had the lamb, and that was also wonderful. The sommelier was knowledgeable and helpful.

THE CLARET JUG Overlooking the lake, the Boathouse offers more casual all-day dining with everything from a fresh fish bar and steaks to burgers, pizzas, and salads. The Claret Jug, which is part of the resort’s golf clubhouse but also open to those not hitting the links, offers all-day dining surrounded by photos of all past winners of the British Open Championship, from Jack Nicklaus to Tiger Woods. The place is named for the British Open golf trophy, which has been affectionately dubbed “The Claret Jug.”

LEISURELY PURSUITS There is plenty to do at Cameron House, from sporting activities like mountain biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and archery to more leisurely pursuits like country walks or relaxing treatments at the resort’s world-class spa. On the premises are indoor

pools, a waterslide, squash courts as well as other leisure and fitness facilities. Programs are available for both adults and children, so bring the little ones. Novices can take lessons in clay pigeon shooting, and you can try your hand at fishing or take a guided pony ride through the Scottish countryside. The ponies are gentle and appropriate for even inexperienced riders.

THE HAWK WALK We had a fun morning with Graham, Cameron House’s resident falconer, on the falconry outing called the “hawk walk.” This unusual experience provides interaction with these majestic predators. You first learn how to handle a bird of prey, and then actually try falconry. On our walk around the property, our Harris’s hawk nabbed a common wood pigeon, which we later got to eat. Yummy! A popular falconry program is specifically for families with children aged 7 and up: each person learns how to hold and fly three different types of birds. Fun!

MUST-DO: CELTIC WARRIOR CRUISE Of all the things to do on the property, two you must not miss. One is to take a private 45-minute ride on the hotel’s seaplane over the gorgeous Loch Lomond, picturesque islands, and the nearby hills and dales. Breathtaking rides of 70 or 110 miles are available daily. The other must is a ride on the Celtic Warrior, the Cameron House’s private cruiser boat. Cameron Diaz, Nicole Richie, and Joel and Benji Madden are among the famous folks who have boarded this luxurious craft.

The Boat House at Cameron House

PGA CUP & EUROPRO TOUR This place is paradise for golf enthusiasts of all levels. The Carrick golf course, overlooking Loch Lomond and straddling the Lowlands and Highlands, has hosted pro tournaments, including the PGA Cup and EuroPro Tour. Cameron House provides transportation to the links, and there are tee options for golfers of all skill levels here, so don’t be intimidated.

THE WEE DEMON A nine-hole course, The Wee Demon, is directly on the grounds between lodges, with views of the lake and marina. PGA instructors are available if you’re looking to improve your swing, and a golf shop if you’ve forgotten anything. The shop also stocks non-athletic designer clothing if you’re just in the mood for some retail therapy.

LOCH LOMOND’S ISLANDS

WORLD CLASS SPA

During a one-hour sail, you’ll see Loch Lomond’s islands and hidden coves. I recommend chartering the entire boat for yourselves. If there is a chill in the air, as there was during our recent trip, they’ll wrap you in a tartan plaid blanket and ply you with Champagne. Perfect! Celtic Warrior cruises for families are available. Nicole Richie and her husband, Joel Madden, took their kids, Harlow and Sparrow. Or you can book a cruise for a romantic outing or even a marriage proposal. After the cruise, have a meal at the Boathouse. The fish here is nothing short of perfect. I recommend the classic moules-frites and the sea bass.

The luxurious Cameron House spa is located near the property, overlooking the resort’s Carrick golf course and the mountains beyond. The hotel’s concierge service will drive you there and back. The spa offers a range of relaxing treatments, including a variety of facials, massages, wraps, and beauty treatments for both men and women, plus 25-minute express treatments if you’re short on time. There are 17 treatment rooms as well as a mud chamber, steam room, and a couples’ room. A dip in the spa’s rooftop swimming pool offers a bird’s-eye view of the spectacular Scottish scenery. cameronhouse.co.uk Social Life

WHAT’S DOING IN LONDON ART, THEATER, FOOD & THE ST. JAMES , S HOTEL AND CLUB By R. Couri Hay

St. James’s Hotel and Club

S

t. James’s is a district within the City of Westminster, London. It is uniquely situated amidst the greenery of St. James’s Park, Green Park, and Hyde Park. This historic section contains Buckingham Palace, the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly, and the elegance of Mayfair. The West End theaters are just a short stroll away. If you like to shop, you can walk to Fortnum and Mason and the luxury shops on Bond Street and in the Burlington Arcade, including Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Ralph Lauren. For gentlemen and the women who love them, Turnbull and Asser on swanky Jermyn Street still has the best shirts, ties, and pocket squares on the planet. They also have some whimsical smoking jackets for the sartorially adventurous. The art world is at your fingertips in this area, with Sotheby’s, Christie’s, White Cube, and other galleries as well as major museums all within walking distance. SocialLifeMagazine.com

THE NATIONAL GALLERY A short stroll away, the National Gallery’s current big ticket is a group of works by Michelangelo and his collaborator Sebastiano, a rarity outside of Italy. This show, which runs through June 25, is the closest you can get to being in the Sistine Chapel without traveling to Rome. Also at the National Gallery this summer, Chris Ofili will unveil a tapestry that he created in collaboration with the renowned Dovecoat Tapestry Studio. The Turner Prize-winner is known for using elephant dung in his paintings; you may recall that this practice led to a controversial lawsuit during Ofili’s 1999 exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, by then-mayor Rudy Giuliani. St. James’s Hotel and Club

Seven Park Place

William’s Bar & Bistro and Halle Berry

TEA AT WILLIAM’S BAR & BISTRO

THE ROSENSTEIN COLLECTION

After a couple of hours of shopping or taking in art, afternoon tea in London is the perfect way to restore your energy. One unusual — and fun — choice is “board game” tea at St. James’s Hotel and Club, in which actual board games are available; think chess, backgammon, or Monopoly. Served in the intimate Art Deco-style of William’s Bar & Bistro, the delectable sweets are shaped like game pieces: chocolate Scrabble letters, cheesecake dominoes, and a sugary confection à la, er, Snakes & Ladders (use your imagination.) Everyone is a winner here.

The royals, aristocrats, and celebrities love this quiet club tucked away from the hustle, bustle, and noise of London, so don’t whip out your iPhone to take selfies with Cher, Halle Berry, or the Duke, as that wouldn’t be considered cricket at the St. James’s, where discretion, privacy, and impeccable service are not only praised, but also delivered. Should you bring along the little ones, they’ll never be bored because the St. James’s has its own kids’ concierge who can recommend the right activities for guests of every age. The cognoscenti call this intimate, 60-room boutique hotel the “best kept secret in Mayfair.” Housed in a chic Victorian townhouse decorated luxuriously with Loro Piana cashmere wallpaper and lacquer furniture, the hotel also houses a fabulous collection of original 20th-century artworks, comprising more than 400 paintings and sculptures known as the Rosenstein Collection.

ST. JAMES’S HOTEL AND CLUB The St. James’s Hotel and Club is one of London’s chicest and quietest boutique hotels, located in the middle of everything at 7-8 Park Place. This tiny street is a cul-de-sac, so there’s little traffic and all the rooms are quiet — a definite plus in this busy metropolis. The Queen’s husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, uses the Royal Entrance to come and go from the Club when he wants a nip or two in the chic bar. This secret tunnel leads directly from the hotel to the Queen’s Walk in Green Park. Take a left as you exit, and it’s five minutes to Buckingham Palace. Take a right, and you’re a shilling’s toss from the best in shopping, culture, theater, and art.

THE PENTHOUSE The St. James’s was recently refurbished at a cost of $75 million. Berlin-based designer Anne Maria Jagdfeld did a splendid job of doing up the interiors primarily in shades of beige and black, with plump pillows in yellow providing bright splashes of color, a perfect contrast to the inevitable grey of London. Not all rooms are equal in any hotel, and there are only 60 rooms and suites here. Unless you’re traveling alone, I highly recommend a suite so you have plenty of room to muck about. I prefer the Westminster suite, which is a more than 500-squarefoot, lushly planted, private roof terrace with spectacular views over London, a spacious living room, and a cozy bedroom, at $2,126 a night. Across the hall is the St James’s suite, which boasts a glamorous living room suitable for entertaining, at $1,626 a night. If you’re traveling with friends or family, you can put both suites together and it becomes the Penthouse for $3,752 a night. This floor is strictly private, and you need a key to access it from the elevator, which is why it’s a favorite of celebs like Robert Redford, Liza Minnelli, and Dita Von Teese.

MICHELIN STARRED CHEF WILLIAM DRABBLE Whether you’re staying at the St James’s Hotel and Club or not, don’t miss dinner at Seven Park Place, the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant. Chef William Drabble’s Frenchinfluenced, locally sourced cuisine has retained its one Michelin star for seven consecutive years. Standout dishes include the Lune Valley lamb and the poached lobster tail, but you can’t really go wrong with anything on this menu. The food is simply excellent across the board. With thick carpets and drapery, linen-covered tables, and warm lighting, this intimate, elegant space offers something truly rare in restaurants today: quiet. You can actually chat with your dining companions here. stjameshotelandclub.com/restaurant

f you’re looking for a family destination with historic flair and Southern charm — without spending the entire day traveling — Richmond, Virginia, is an ideal place to visit. The Jefferson Hotel, dating back to 1895, with a fabled past, stunning Spanish Baroque architecture, and recent renovations is positively the place to stay. Richmond, the capital of Virginia and the one-time capital of the Confederacy, is a vibrant town with many historical places related to America’s Colonial years. The Jefferson Hotel is a member of Historic Hotels of America and city guides proudly point it out on their tours. As soon as we entered the main lobby, we were delighted by the warm welcome we received from the hotel staff. We were absolutely wowed by the splendor throughout, particularly the sweeping staircase that provides a not-to-be-missed photo opportunity. Our grand room matched the rest of the hotel in its elegance and lavish touches. This is an unquestionably luxurious place to start your morning as well as to end a long day of sights and scenes. How about a soak in the stand-alone tub while watching TV on a screen that’s part of the bathroom mirror! Or you may want to relax in the lovely pool area on loungers after a refreshing swim. My kids loved The Jefferson Hotel Grand Premier swimming after a

day of sightseeing. Richmond abounds with things to do. For an extendedweekend trip, we managed to pack in a variety of sites. We visited the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the University of Richmond campus, the Edgar Allen Poe Museum, and the Virginia State Capitol (partially designed by Thomas Jefferson). We also explored a path along the beautiful James River (the only urban river where you can kayak and raft class III and IV rapids); drove down Monument Avenue, a residential boulevard lined with dramatic statues and part of the picturesque Fan District; and soaked up the neighborhood atmosphere in Carytown and Near West End, seeking out great food at every opportunity, including at The Jefferson. The small bites at The Jefferson’s Lemaire, which features seasonal American cuisine with Southern zip, like crispy fried deviled eggs and white almond garlic soup, were deliciously fun to try. Cocktails were interesting, too, especially the 1895 made with small-batch bourbon. Lemaire offers a vast selection of wine by the bottle or glass. By the way, the peoplewatching at Lemaire was a fabulous activity in of itself as many weddings and other parties are held at The Jefferson, and the revelers come in for cocktails dressed in their finery. The Jefferson hosts an exceedingly popular Sunday brunch in the Rotunda lobby, and afternoon tea Friday through Sunday in the Palm Court lobby. Make sure to reserve brunch and tea in advance, so you don’t miss out on what have become Richmond traditions for locals and guests alike. TURKS & CAICOS EXCLUSIVE TO-DO LIST By Jacob Puck

I

t’s only June, yet, for better or worse, we’re already beginning to think about where we might want to take a fall jaunt, celebrate the holidays, or, perhaps, spend the majority of the winter. As usual, the Caribbean is on our short list mainly for its ease of access and seemingly endless opportunity for our varied proclivities. It’s easy to opt for ultimate exclusivity because it scratches an immediate itch: a summer of parties in the Hamptons begs for anonymity. But, does tucking oneself away like Robinson Crusoe feed the soul and the body? We say no. This year, we’re opting for Turks and Caicos for an unmatched blend of what the Caribbean has to offer.

ECO-ADVENTURE There is no limit to secret hideaways to test your stamina and take in extreme beauty in the Turks and Caicos archipelago — whether watching birds or paddling through grottos. A hands-down favorite is a kayak to Madison point and then an exploration of the coast on foot. Take in the beauty and tranquility of nature as you paddle a two-person glass bottom kayak through gentle, shallow waters edged in mangroves. Explore small coves and learn about the importance of this natural, native wonder. See an abundance of plants and birds, including impressive osprey nests. Our pick? Oasis Divers at oasisdivers.com.

CULINARY CONQUEST Yes, the islands offer haute cuisine, but, when in Rome . . . or in this case, Turks and Caicos, do as the locals do for true adventure. A cultural explosion is rocking Provo! Every Thursday over a dozen local food vendors, entertainers, and cultural acts come together for an island Fish Fry to create an evening of “all things TCI.” Fish Fry kicked off in late January, thanks to the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board in collaboration with the Department of Culture; the Department of Marine and Environmental Affairs; and LIME, the communication provider and major presenter. The aroma of fresh fish frying permeates the air, while visual treats abound with vats of boiling lobsters and conch salad masters plying their craft. Plates loaded with crab ’n’ rice, lobster mac & cheese, and local island corn straight off the grill beckon. Local restaurants come from all corners of the island to participate, each offering up its specialty menu items and the opportunity to try one or all.

FESTIVALS Caribbean Food and Wine Festival (November 2 through 5, caribbeanfoodandwinefestivaltci.com) Mix sun, sand, swaying palms, and the gentle swish of the ocean with meals created by celebrity chefs and master sommeliers and you’ve got the ingredients for an extraordinary gastronomical adventure in paradise. The Caribbean Wine and Food Festival offers an authentic Turks and Caicos experience through food and culture, heightened by the expectation of an international audience. Turks and Caicos continues to build its reputation as one of the finest epicurean centers in the Caribbean. This gourmet safari promises to revive the palates of patrons with culinary offerings from world renowned chefs, paired with the world’s finest wines, in one of the world’s most alluring destinations.

CONCH FESTIVAL (November 28, conchfestival.com) Conch is the island’s most popular dish, a true delicacy and musthave during the Turks and Caicos dining experience. The Conch Festival is a popular beachside, family-friendly event in the rustically charming Blue Hills area of Providenciales. The festival brings foodies, visitors, and locals together in celebration of the nation’s love for conch. Foodies can sample a variety of traditional and newly created specialty conch dishes prepared by the island’s best restaurants, all competing to reign as Best in Show, while mingling with other attendees or dancing to the sounds of a local rip-saw band. The annual event takes place during the last weekend in November of each year.

CULTURE Artists in the Caribbean are blessed with an environment ripe for inspiration, and, in Turks and Caicos, the sparkling turquoise waters along with the colorful characters of the local population provide even more drama and stimulation for sketches, paintings, drawings, and craftwork. Oils and watercolors are the media most widely used by the local artists. With the influence of the vivid colors and broad styles popular on neighboring Haiti and the Dominican Republic, a new style of Turks and Caicos art is emerging to further define the scenes, themes, and subject matter for young and upcoming artists as they capture their culture on canvas. In other words, be thinking about the empty wall in your East End manse and how it might benefit from a reminder from island life. turksandcaicostourism.com. Social Life

A DAY IN THE SOCIAL LIFE SOUTHAMPTON By Karen Holly Berliner

The Latch Pop-Up Inn

H

eading East we begin to wind down as we head out of the city and conjure a weekend at a deliciously slower pace. Today we’re heading to Southampton. Despite its offering the finest in dining, lodging, scenic beaches, and culture, this area still manages to maintain its casual easy breezy vibe. Our weekend begins at The Latch Pop-Up Inn, a new five-acre property located right in the center of Southampton Village, reminiscent of its summer colony origin. Formerly the historic Village Latch Inn and originally the grand annex to Manhattan’s Irving Hotel in the early 1900s, this property is relaxed with an authentic and rustic charm. Awaiting us in this simple no-frills inn are 20 newly refurbished guest rooms, all set on a lush private property. Because this is not a traditional hotel, most every room is unique, but nevertheless each exudes a simple, clean, and relaxed feel. We check in early, settle our belongings, and decide to take a walk in order to get a lay of the land. The inn is a short walk to many restaurants, shops, entertainment, Lake Agawam Park, and a one-mile ride or jog to

Coopers Beach. We chance upon the trendy Jobs Lane where we discover Copious Row Beach, a new lifestyle concept store enjoying its opening season this year, with its flagship store located in Greenwich, Connecticut. Copious Row Beach offers an exclusive designer selection of well curated, exclusive, and specialized items from top designers. Its 600-square-foot space features a contemporary design with a modern and sophisticated beach vibe. We shop a little, perusing women’s clothing, resort-wear, and accessories and decide to enjoy a bit of a spree. After, we are eager to grab a lovely meal. Craving seafood, we visit the Lobster Grille Inn, the only waterfront restaurant in Southampton. Emphasized here is the catch of the day, fresh off the dock. We start with the chopped salad: red leaf lettuce, crumpled blue cheese, roasted peppers, candied walnuts, onions, cranberry raisins, and balsamic vinaigrette. Next we feast on a traditional New England clambake stocked with freshly steamed lobster, sausage, clams, mussels, potatoes, and corn. For dessert we enjoy a slice of flourless truffle Social Life

chocolate cake with berries and coulis. The next day, we sleep in and wake to warm and sunny weather, so we head straight to Coopers Beach and sunbathe for a few hours. This is one of the top ten beaches in the United States. Food is available here at its pavilion, which offers outdoor dining to enjoy. Umbrellas and beach chairs are available for rent. We lounge away the hours, and, as we do, we peruse our Southampton calendar for cultural events, taking note of the Southampton Arts Center. Worth consideration are such events as selections from the Henry Buhl Collection, through July 23. Featured is an exhibition of 111 photographs and 33 sculptures devoted to the subject of hands, collected by Mr. Buhl over decades. Another event worth consideration is Jazz on the Steps, live music at SAC, featuring local and international musicians. For a lighter experience, Surf Movie Night at SAC features an outdoor screening of short, noncommercial surf movies, including ones made by East End filmmakers. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Sunday morning we sleep in, then jog back to the beach, and decide to grab a lovely brunch at noon. While the Southampton Publick House is well known as a landmark for beer, the brunch here is sublime. Set in a 19th-century clapboard building surrounded by stately trees, it has a terrace covered by a blue-and-white striped awning. This space operated as a speakeasy during Prohibition. Today the pub brews its own ales, including Belgian-style white beer and India pale ale to name a few, but, oh, the food served here! We enjoy the grand gala French toast made from classic challah bread, with warm maple syrup, and accompanied by bacon. The Belgium style malted waffles are also hard to resist. For the heartier appetite, a marinated flatiron steak, farm fresh eggs, toast, and home fries seem perfect. We take a walk after this fabulous meal and head back to the beach to catch some final sun before returning to the inn. By day we relax by the pool and enjoy doing nothing at all. At night, we visit the popular Sant Ambroeus, a slice of Milanese heritage cooking with modern influences. We enter and discover an inviting décor. Photographs from Clifford Ross’s Hurricane series line the spacious dining room that is furnished with ivory leather banquettes. The outdoor patio is secluded and intimate, perfect for al fresco dining. The menu features classic Italian specialties and its signature vitello tonnato. The chef de cuisine, Fabio Gutierrez, does a fabulous job keeping the menu fresh and fabulous. Desserts such as homemade gelato, cookies, and pastries round off the meal with finesse and variety. The next day we check into A Butler’s Manor Bed and Breakfast, a lodging destination with a private boutique feel, also allowing for quick access to the vibrant streets of this village. This property is situated on an acre of colorful gardens and features a full-sized saltwater pool, ideal for a refreshing afternoon swim. A lovely breakfast is served in the garden, and we take full advantage of this first thing the next morning. We enjoy fresh fruit aside homemade breads and scones followed by the signature house omelet. We decide to catch one last meal while we are here and before the drive back home. We choose Oreya, located at the Capri Hotel. This is not only a restaurant but it’s also a destination pool club with a vibrant Mediterranean influence. Featuring outdoor seating with a newly renovated pool and an open-air lounge, the menu here emphasizes ingredients sourced from local farms and fisheries. A daily raw bar selection is a steady attraction, along with its food cooked on a wood burning grill and plancha. The entrée choices are inventive and seasonal. We choose from a creative cocktail list that focuses on the bright and aromatic flavors of the Mediterranean. We choose tasty tuna tartare inyufka pastry with lemon, olive oil, and mint chermoula sauce, and sip some Chardonnay. It is just right for the warm and sultry evening. Newly relaxed and refreshed, we drive home, with visions of being back on the East End soon.

emember when edamame was all the rage? For more than just a split second, this filling, savory treat was on the appetizer menu at every fête . . . and no one cared that they were a beast to eat. (It’s still a mystery how one skillfully and daintily empties that pod and disposes of it with ease.) Blistered shishito peppers are not only easy to eat, but they are an addictive accompaniment to any classic cocktail or other fruity libation. Seasoned only with salt and lustfully popping with EVO, they are sinfully simple and much more complex in flavor and texture than what you might expect from such a simple-to-prepare app. Somewhere between the crunch, the smoke, and smooth texture, well, we dare you to stop at one (or two, or ten!) Here’s a hint: when shopping, choose peppers between two and five inches long that are bright green and very firm. Local farmers’ markets are your best bet, although you can often find packages of shishito peppers at Asian grocery stores throughout the year.

HOW TO DRINK THE PINK By Sharon Roth

W

ith temperatures finally heating up and summer heading into full swing, it’s time to break out the Rosé we have been longing for — those shimmering, peachy-pink bottles that didn’t quite work a few months ago next to a fireplace in the winter chill. No worries, ’tis the season for drinking the pink! With its varying tones of peach, salmon, rose, and light translucent ruby, this delightfully tart vino has become the perfect beach accessory, one that not only looks like heaven nestled in an ice bucket in the sand, but is a tangy, Mediterranean-style antidote to summer heat. A few things to know going in. First, Rosé can be crafted from Grenache, Sangiovese, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir, really any kind of grape — and most Rosés are blends of a few varieties. The biggest producers of Rosé by volume are France, Spain (rosado), Italy (rosato), and the United States (where we happily call it plain Rosé). But tantalizing bottles are increasingly coming from South America, Germany, South Africa, Australia, and many other spots. For the moment, the definitive epicenter of the Rosé wine world remains Provence. Wines from this region evoke ripe summer strawberries and raspberries and are refreshing with zesty acidity. If quality is your goal, seek out wines with a high percentage of Grenache, Syrah, or Mourvèdre versus Carignan or Cinsault, which are not as complex. Expect to find drier, “punchier” Rosé wines from the Loire Valley, where flavors of grapefruit, mint, and even red bell pepper are common. In Bordeaux, Rosé made from Merlot can lean toward the sweet side, with aromatics of strawberry sauce and peaches. No need to worry about aging — in the land of Rosé, the newest is usually the freshest. Unlike with reds (and Meryl Streep. And Helen Mirren. And Betty White) rosés do not im-

prove with age. Steer clear of Rosés that are more than a few years old. And follow this quick cheat guideline: the darker the color, the bolder and richer the flavor. Pale, salmon-toned Rosés with little color will be crisp and dry, while darker-hued ones like the Napa Valley Cabernet Rosés will be more savory and complex. Finally, don’t hesitate to try something new. While certain labels have become Hamptons Rosé staples and are easy fallbacks, it’s ok to branch out a little. Restaurants and bars are usually proud of their vino selections, and as long as they are not super packed (and you don’t get greedy and ask for more than two or three at a time) they are more than happy to help you expand your palate and try a few new ones … so go ahead and taste away! (Don’t worry, your server will let you know if you’ve gone too far and it’s time to commit.) Finally, no need to be a purist. Some luscious cocktails come from Rosé, so mix it up! For a basil Rosé lemonade, blend pink vino with citrus vodka, basil leaves, a lemon wedge, and simple syrup. For a Rosé margarita, mix Rosé with white tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime. Or blend some Rosé with strawberry vodka and fresh strawberries and grapefruit juice for a deliciously fruity summer cocktail and name it whatever you like. Serve over ice of course. June 12 was International Rose Day (ok, that actually refers to the flower, but no matter), so let’s make June the official Rosé month of the Hamptons. Grab your favorite pink and toast to a fabulous summer 2017!

THE MOST RECOGNIZED ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE IN THE WORLD — LET’S TOAST! By Jacob Puck

E

legant and fruity, the Cuvée Rosé from Laurent-Perrier is the most recognized Rosé Champagne in the world. It is also one of the few Rosés still made by the saignée method, which minimizes the time grape skins and juice are in contact with each other during processing. Held in an elegant bottle inspired by King Henri IV, it has been widely acknowledged for its consistently high quality for more than 40 years, and it is the benchmark for Rosé Champagne around the world.

Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé is truly remarkable for its highly expressive bouquet, stemming from careful preservation of fresh fruit aromas during the winemaking. Made with 100% Pinot Noir from 10 different crus (or villages), from the North and South areas of the Montagne de Reims as well as the famous Côte de Bouzy. Grapes from carefully selected plots are meticulously sorted and de-stemmed before going into the vats, and the controlled maceration helps with the color extraction and the development of the full aromatic richness of the Pinot Noir. With intensely fruity flavors, clean and slightly sharp, the wine opens to the sensation of freshly picked red berries: strawberries, Morello cherries, black currants, and raspberries. The finish is supple and rounded. If you prefer your Champagne sans the pink, try Laurent-Perrier Brut NV Champagne. It’s a lighter house style. Subtle citrus, toast, and spice predominate this perfectly balanced Champagne, with a strong structure, giving the wine good food compatibility. As quoted in the Wine Enthusiast: “Laurent-Perrier’s dry style is reflected in this crisp, elegant, and fine Champagne. The character is mineral, taut, with a great burst of citrus and white fruit acidity. The ensemble creates a delicious food-friendly wine.” Laurent-Perrier is a major producer of Champagne and Social Life’s summer libation pick. laurent-perrrier.com Social Life

BAGATELLE REDEFINING JOIE DE VIVRE By Jacob Puck in French cuisine these days? Today it’s dishes to share that are family sized, not tapas sized. They promote a convivial way of dining and celebrating life around a shared meal that is supposed to make you feel good. Ok, back to the people-watching. Bagatelle is a celebrity hot spot. Who has really blown your mind when they came through the door? Sofia Vergara. She came several times, always with a huge smile, uber-friendly, and in a perfect Bagatelle mood. Her beauty, dance moves, and overall kindness will always be remembered. Of course, Mariah Carey came in with her crew recently during Christmas and sang All I Want for Christmas Is You. Michael Strahan has been a regular and has never been short of amazing with kudos on his daily shows to his signature great energy.

T

here are few NYC restaurants that have risen to the level of legendary and have maintained that mantle, all the while expanding to some of the most exotic areas of the world. Bagatelle is one of them. From its perfectly inventive French cuisine and reputation as a celebrity playground to its worldfamous brunch and its all-star service, this hotspot never gets old. A true favorite of our readers, I thought it only fitting to kick off the summer with an interview with Bagatelle’s maestro and founder, Remi Laba. What in your opinion has made Bagatelle in NYC so famous? When we first opened, the world quickly entered a serious financial crisis, but as many restaurants were closing their doors, banks were folding, and people were losing their jobs, Bagatelle was a restaurant where people were celebrating life. That attracted the attention of the media. Then, our brunch became an instant success and reshaped the industry. Finally, it was a restaurant where you could not only eat well, but also have fun. People started to understand joie de vivre and embraced it. Celebrities also started to come and speak of us. Aah, star power. Bagatelle is obviously a pastime for the jet set, but for those in the know, the secret sauce for this famous French restaurant is the food. What’s the hottest trend

What is your favorite dish? I love everything on our menu. However, I will gladly point to our crispy steak tartare, our truffled gnocchi a la Parisienne, our iconic gambas flambées au pastis, and finally our legendary truffle roasted chicken for two. What do you think is the menu’s best kept secret? Our foie gras sliders and our ceviche. These two dishes are incredible, and I often send them to tables that I want to surprise or impress with something different. It works each time! What are your favorite locations and why? It’s an impossible question to answer. However, I love New York because it’s our first and it has a unique energy. We owe our success to this location. I love Miami because it’s a beautiful room, intimate, and so Bagatelle on all fronts. St. Barth is magical because I fell in love with my wife there and got engaged there, but also because it’s a beautiful spot with one of my most dedicated teams. Saint-Tropez is our dream becoming reality and I love it for that: it’s our piece of France. Rio de Janeiro is one of our most beautiful venues with its incredible architecture . . . I just can’t pick! Monaco, Dubai, Punta, Sao Paulo, I love you all too. bistrotbagatelle.com Social Life

LADURÉE J’ADORE TEA PARTIES By Lizabeth Zindel

I

’ll always remember the first time I went to Ladurée, the famous French patisserie. I was wandering through the narrow streets of the Left Bank in Paris and came upon Ladurée’s mint green exterior at 21 rue Bonaparte. A glance at the elegant towers of sweets in the corner windows enticed me to go inside. One step into the charming bakery and I was enchanted by the exquisite pastries, colorful macarons, and beautiful sitting room filled with painted murals and red velvet chairs. In recent years, I was overjoyed to discover the Grand Dame of macarons opened up tea salons in Washington D.C., Miami, Los Angeles, and New York City. It no longer requires a transatlantic flight to enjoy a uniquely delightful almondmeringue cake with a creamy ganache filling. In New York City, Lauderée has two locations: Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side and West Broadway in Soho. Each captures the romance of Paris and provides a perfect venue for a tea party. The Soho location has a spacious back dining room that feels as if it were out of Marie Antoinette’s Petit Trianon. A spacious patio area with lighted trees is open in nice weather.

The tea time menu includes a choice of hot beverages — coffees, hot chocolate, or, of course, a fine tea. One choice is Thé Jardin Bleu Royal, a blend of China and Sri Lanka black teas mixed with petals of cornflowers and marigolds and infused with essences of wild strawberry, rhubarb, and cherry. Each guest also receives a selection of mini sandwiches, French macarons, and a patisserie from la collection Ladurée. The delicious macaron flavors include pistachio, rose petal, chocolate, salted caramel, orange blossom, lemon, and coffee. All patisseries are delicious, but my favorite is the absolutely wonderful Ispahan. This best-selling dessert is made with two pink macaron cookies sandwiching rose-infused buttercream, fresh lychees, and raspberries. Served with a red rose petal floating on top, the sweet is almost too beautiful to eat. If you’re looking for a souvenir to remember your delightful tea party, Ladurée now offers signature candles, incense, shopping bags, home fragrances, makeup, and colorful boxes of tea. laduree.com Social Life

MARK PERRY By Eve Xanthopoulos

Mark Perry, Dunes, 2007, oil on canvas, 48 in. x 48 in.

Eve Xanthopoulos always had a passion for art and completed a coveted internship at the Marian Goodman Gallery. From voraciously learning about the artists and their work to curating homes of art lovers, she proceeded to create her own company, The Xanth Group, where she privately advises and curates art for her clientele. Aside from working closely as a business manager for legendary artist Chuck Close, Eve spends her time as an author, philanthropist, art advisor, and entrepreneur. Her range of interests extend across continents and issues, including health, the arts, the environment, and children.

Can you tell me something about what led you to become an artist? I grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, between North and Downtown Providence. A middle child in a family of six kids. One memory from the early seventies was of a neighbor named Sandy drawing pastel portraits of The Supremes — her drawing of Florence stood out. On Saturday mornings she would go to a retired neighbor’s house for drawing classes. The sign outside his house read: “George Matteo, Artist.” Sitting around his kitchen table, the students would use charcoal to copy portraits of celebrities and animals. He wasn’t bad and charged five dollars an hour. I joined her in the class only once. I also remember going to summer day camp with a boy who drew trees with an inspiring precision that was new to me. I had not been exposed to art or museums at that point, and I remember thinking, I want to do that. I recall from an early age the desire to be an artist. I am self-taught, of course influenced by many. I would visit

the RISD Museum, sketching paintings and terracotta sculpture over and over. In my mid-twenties, when working as an electrical draftsperson during the week and doing life drawing on Saturday mornings, a wise person who happened to be a RISD professor said: ‘Mark, you don’t have to go to art school to be an artist.’ That really stuck with me and gave me encouragement when I needed it. We thrive from caring people sharing their wisdom. Your landscape paintings are so calming. I’m sure you have lots of inspiration living out in the East End. Tell me about your painting process and what makes you decide to paint a certain scene. What do you love most about painting landscapes? It’s nice that you say my landscapes are calming; the process can certainly be invigorating. When making traditional landscape paintings in the studio, I gravitate to distant open vistas

and close-up details, referencing my own local photography or from travels. I go back and forth from landscape to more abstract work, and find they feed one another. When after a period of painting and not drawing, it was revelatory to discover that my eye was as sharp as ever. My explorations with charcoal and graphite felt stronger, more observed. What draws me to landscape painting and painting in general is like the seasons, it is always evolving. Like everything at the beginning, it feels like inventing the wheel, seldom boring.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SEBASTIAN RANDY SCOTT & ERIC SHINER INTERVIEW THE ARTIST SEBASTIAN ERRAZURIZ Introduction by Randy Scott

T

he prolific output of Sebastian Errazuriz has always fascinated me. He dances fluidly between art and design. Eric Shiner (the senior vice president of contemporary art at Sotheby’s, and previously the director of the Andy Warhol Museum), similarly intrigued, selected Sebastian’s installation The Awareness of Uncertainty as the lead piece for his curated project, Platform, at The Armory Show earlier this year. The installation was an upright piano dangling perilously twenty feet above the Champagne lounge. Together we sat down with Sebastian to get some insight into his work and his thoughts about politics, women’s highheeled shoes, and the future of artificial intelligence.

The vast number of mediums, genres, and arenas you operate in with your art is rather staggering. Many artists like to narrow their focus. Can you give some insight as to how this want to proliferate came about? Think of most artists as you would think of most musicians. They may compose better than the average person yet most lack the talent to become professionals. A few succeed by creating a one-hit wonder that they then continue repeating for the span of their career. Fewer still are capable of creating multiple original works composed over a wide variety of styles and genres. If you have talent, training, and tenacity to become one of those few artists, why would you choose to focus on a mediocre career destined to repeat a one-hit song? Social Life

In 2006, Sebastian Errazuriz persuaded the Chilean government to allow him to plant a thirty-foot magnolia tree in the center of Chile’s National Stadium, the venue where Augusto Pinochet had imprisoned, tortured, and killed thousands of political prisoners in 1973. Sebastian then convinced the National Football Team to play a match in honor of those murdered — to a crowd of 20,000.

The Tree Memorial of a Concentration Camp, 2006

You’ve made pointed political statements in your work, such as your installation in the Chilean National Football Stadium, The Tree Memorial of a Concentration Camp. Then we find you’ve made a line of high-heeled shoes for women. How do such varied choices come about in your head? Is there a struggle? Is it off the cuff ? There is no struggle. The human being is a complex dynamic entity. How can his art not be? If art is a mirror that reflects humanity, it must reflect all of us, not only the serious or profound. A true artist is at times heartfelt, at others lighthearted. He can find humor in tragedy, and pivot from business to politics, religion to sex, or even Japanese wood crafting to the future of ethics in A.I. [artificial intelligence]. The artist should SocialLifeMagazine.com

strive to create that which challenges the audience to confront two or more contradicting ideas simultaneously. If there is a distinction between art and design, it is clearly something you like to toy with. What’s important in this to you? We should understand art and design as different languages that help communicate ideas to different audiences. Most artists are fluent in one language and consequently speak only to one audience. Fluency in multiple languages requires a larger vocabulary and a globalized understanding of culture. Multilingual artists are not tied down by the rules of one system. They have learned to keep track of the overarching themes

and skip freely from one language to another in order to communicate more precisely an idea or feeling with a multiplicity of audiences. When Warhol made the leap from commercial artist to fine artist, he at first found it difficult to be taken seriously by the art world. Have you found this to be the case? What have you done to counter it? Obviously, Warhol emerged victorious in the end, so we’re interested to get your take on this as you progress in your art making. Every kid in my home country, Chile, studies an arts program that was designed by my father. Since early childhood, I was required to have a critical understanding of art and a technical domain of its craft. Everything in my life was dictated by art. Even my teenage allowance was earned writing the cue cards for my father’s university classes. I am not a designer turned artist, but an artist who studied design because I already knew the university arts curriculum.

Death and religion are recurrent themes in your work, albeit mostly with a good dose of humor. Where do these themes come from? Religion is created from man’s inability to accept death. A social construction to help explain things in a way we cannot accept. Humor on the other hand works as a lubricant that allows a coarse idea to be shoved more smoothly past the natural fearful resistance of people’s minds. If behind every good joke there’s a truth, behind every good artwork we should find a portrayal of reality that is too hard to define in words. The tree limb made for the Audemars Piguet VIP booth at Basel required the use of robots to construct. What is the idea behind the work? What was the purpose of the robots? I wanted to highlight the mesmerizing futility of handcrafting mechanical watches in an era where time is available on every phone or microwave. Mechanical watches have lost their function as horology tools and instead have gained a new funcSocial Life

tion as symbolic historic reminders of human engineering ingenuity. Transforming planks of wood into a giant sculptural block carved back into the shape of a tree, seemed like an equivalent exhaustion that could only be justified by the love of art. To have a symbol of nature, life, and time reconstructed by the latest technology in robotics gave the piece a fascinating new context.

and the synapses between them. Art must go through major structural changes if it wishes to remain a relevant language in the next decades.

Born in Chile. Raised in London. Graduate school at NYU. Twelve-year veteran now of NYC. You’ve seen a lot. What progressions in your work do you feel have been most important to you? A tough dynamic education and training have taught me first and foremost that I know nothing. I focus not on what I currently know, but on all those things we don’t know yet. I’m excited about the new era we are entering and try to focus on using all my previous logic and imagination to try and foresee and be prepared for the unknown, the yet to be discovered. We’ve heard a rumor that a next chapter for you is focusing on the future of the tech world. Can you give a glimpse of that? Traditional contemporary visual art is no longer an efficient tool of expression in the era of the attention economy. Our attention span is decreasing and our ability to process imagery has increased. Communication technology is not only changing the way we interact among us, it is changing the way our individual neurons fire up SocialLifeMagazine.com

Artists, consequently, must also adapt. In the next decade, cab drivers, accountants, and lawyers will be replaced by A.I. In the next two decades, A.I. will reach human sentient intelligence and will start creating the new forms of artwork that will fascinate all humans. Moore’s Law [the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits will double each year, as they have since their invention] guarantees that merely a year after A.I. reaches human level intelligence, the best human artist will comparatively be as daft as an circus elephant with a paintbrush in its trunk. It’s over! Se acabo! C’est fini! There will be no more future human artists after 20 years. The artist ‘hunger games’ have started, and the last few artists standing will be the ones that will help program the robots and then retire as the great historic architects of the new order. meetsebastian.com Instagram: @sebastianstudio

ES BLOOMS EARTHLY DELIGHTS By Isa Perez

C

lose your eyes. Imagine Eden. Lush. Fragrant. Worldly pleasure of the flora variety.

First of all, I want to know more about you. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, one of seven children. I grew up hearing stories about my Brazilian father and Slovakian mother’s early dating days dancing at Studio 54. Springtime was my favorite time of year, and I was thrilled to plant and grow my dahlias, zinnias, and tulips alongside the famed horticulturists at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. What is it about working with flowers that really inspires your creativity? We have international access to any flower imaginable. I am fascinated by the variety of flowers’ colors, scents, textures, and possible arrangements. Often, a vase inspires my aesthetic direction, or I spot an exquisite, seasonal flower that becomes my muse. Do you prefer simplicty or Garden of Eden opulence? I am most inspired by the Japanese culture of minimalist elegance. Breaking everything down to the most basic floral units, and finding innovative ways to structurally enhance flowers’ natural beauty. What is the most memorable event you ever designed for? In 2014, I was hired to design for an 800-person gala at my alma mater, Poly Prep Country Day School. The event was at the historic Cipriani Wall Street, and Jon Bon Jovi headlined. Bon Jovi came early to rehearse, and for half an hour I listened to an exclusive preview of his hit songs. Needless to say, it was a fantastic experience. What is a must-have in event and hospitality arrangements these days? Edge, unique designs, and a great relationship with the client! SocialLifeMagazine.com

If upon opening your eyes, you are surprised to find that your senses have not deceived you, it’s very likely that you have entered the world of Elisabeth Santana, the founder of ES Blooms. A fullservice floral company, designing for clients in New York City and the Hamptons, ES Blooms has become a renowned purveyor of unique and powerful arrangements. I recently interviewed Elisabeth as she was preparing for a blooming summer season, and below is our conversation.

I must ask what is your favorite flower and why? Bird of Paradise, the exotic flower used in my logo. It represents joyfulness, thoughtfulness, and love. My middle name is Joy, and I am naturally drawn to this flower’s vibrant colors. What’s the trick to making inexpensive flowers such as carnations and liatris look spectacular? With a stunning vase as our starting point, we can design flowers into a show-stopping piece. Additionally, same-flower groupings make an arrangement appear modern and opulent. Is there a charity you support? I have been partnering with St. Jude since 2016, and I’m thrilled to be designing for the St. Jude Hope in the Hamptons Gala on July 15. I am planning a fun, interactive flower wall, with generous floral donations from several local farms. If you weren’t building a floral empire, what would you be working on? Producing electronic music and mastering the sport of polo with my love, Michael Borrico. esblooms.com elisabeth@esblooms.com 607.342.4583

It sounds like you can do just about anything, and that you’re very busy. How did your business come to life? I was a teacher for many years as well as a tutor. I loved having a relationship with the families I encountered. After starting my own family, I wanted to find something that would fulfill that need! About a year ago, one of my closest friends, who’s a realtor, asked if I might help with a few errands. One thing just led to another. What’s is the one thing most often requested? Fresh healthy meals, and we do an amazing job. We plan and prepare to meet the dietary needs of a family in a delicious way. We can also do this before a family arrives for the weekend. We make running back and forth to the grocery store a thing of the past. Other popular requests are dinner parties and house managers. How is a house manager different from a property manager? House managers do everything. And clients often look for people who can do anything from driving a boat to installing a basketball hoop, and also be personable. So what sets you apart from a traditional agency? A personal touch. I carefully vet people to find the right match. These are often people I know, part of my network or contacts from my career in education. I pride myself on finding local people in the Hamptons, and the best part of what I do, what makes me happiest, is that I am really helping people find work. The locals are amazing and hard-working. What are some unusual requests you’ve received? One recent request was to help someone find a date, and another was to find a way for a child to pop out of a piñata at a birthday party. THE PERFECT COMBINATIONS By Jacob Puck

S

ummer is already here, but celebrity cosmetic surgeon Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg says it's definitely not too late for patients to re-shape their bodies or have a more youthful and refreshed look for July and August. “Many times, my patients can benefit from combining procedures to have a more complete and natural look, with very little downtime,” says Dr. Greenberg. “Some of the most popular combinations have been breast augmentation with liposuction, or liposuction coupled with a fat transfer procedure. Many patients are asking about new areas in which to transfer their fat, such as their buttocks, face, and even their hands. In addition to surgical combinations, we offer injection and spa treatment packages to create the look that the patient desires.” Ultherapy treatments also have been gaining in popularity to help lift and tighten the neck, chin, brow, and improve lines and wrinkles on the chest. According to Dr. Greenberg, the treatments are performed in his state-of-the-art MediSpa and are non-invasive. “Patients have been overwhelmingly satisfied with the results of their Ultherapy treatments and can help maintain their new youthful look with Microneedling, which boosts their own collagen,” he says. “The result is a more refreshed and youthful appearance.” Botox has been in the mainstream for many years, and many patients have been thrilled with the smoother, younger appearance their treatments provide. According to Dr. Greenberg, you may not know there is a new injection taking the cosmetic surgery world by storm — Kybella. Kybella is an absolute game-changer for patients who struggle with submental fullness, a.k.a. a double chin,” he says. “With a few treatments, Kybella can melt away fat under the jawline and tighten the skin, creating a slimmer and more sculpted jawline.” Call Dr. Greenberg for your complimentary consultation at 631.287.4999 greenbergcosmeticsurgery.com
