PUBLISHER’S LETTER

With Memorial Day, the start of the Hamptons summer has officially arrived. For me this is the best time of the year. Just the thought of long summer days, the beach, social events and family time creates a special energy inside all of us. Eager to live life and make new memories, we all journey out to the East End. This summer is special for Social Life Magazine. We are celebrating 15 years in print! Where did the time go? I don’t know. What started out as a simple idea has evolved into the primary publication of the Hamptons. I remember the long nights my staff and I put in over all these years. Seeing how all the articles, covers and event photos come together to make our issues has made a deep impression on me. Working on this magazine has shaped my thoughts and ideas, and has changed my life forever. I’m looking forward to another 15 years in print and all the experiences and memories to come. The Hamptons summer always has so many things to offer. It’s the best time to relax at the beach, be with friends and family, pursue a wellness lifestyle, attend social events, and so much more. To enjoy these moments completely, I decided to put away my cell phone as much as possible, and I’ve discovered it’s worth it! The beginning of the summer is here, and while I look forward to it, I’m careful not to let it go by so fast. Take your time with things and don’t be in a rush. Open your eyes to the real treasure of the Hamptons, the surrounding nature and tranquility of the beach. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Some sayings are true. In particular, I can tell you in life it really is not about the destination but is about the journey. We all have goals and the road you travel to get to where or what you want will be what constitutes your life. This weekend I’m overjoyed that it’s been fifteen years of Social Life Magazine in the Hamptons! I remember listening and talking to Justin about this idea when the magazine was barely a concept. How did this magazine bloom from a dream into a business that has been going strong for so long? I think it’s all about fortitude, focus, and teamwork — with a little bit of luck. I remember when most of our cover girls were people I had met socially. In the infancy of the magazine, I had met Kim Kardashian at a fashion show and kept in touch when years later that developed into a cover. Lydia Hearst I had met through mutual friends and Kellan Lutz had attended one of our events in the Hamptons. I also remember when I ran into Beth Stern at Polo and later told our publisher, Justin Mitchell, that this girl I had once taken a directing class with would be a great cover! It does seem like yesterday. So many wonderful stories and memories. And it’s not just the covers but the pages of the magazine that have bloomed organically. This little family has grown through the years and now here we are. We have seen many magazines come and go, but we’ve stayed focused with our heads down and continued to create year after year. I’m proud of everyone who has contributed to these pages from editors to photographers, models, family, and friends. I am grateful for all those who continue to pick up the magazine. It warms my heart to see people carrying a copy walking down Main Street or thumbing through pages over a chai tea at Provisions. Like the growth of Social Life, my coming to the Hamptons has been an incredible journey. The summer days, like the pages of this magazine, make up a story, a life, a personal history. Wishing everyone a beautiful and healthy weekend! With love, Devorah

JEWELRY

JOAN HORNIG THE ART OF PHILANTHROPY By Krista Norris

J

oan Hornig is a philanthropist who gives back through jewelry design. She launched her original collection at Bergdorf Goodman, and she’s now adding to her line with her latest collection, Pavé the Way. An interview is below. You have two philanthropic jewelry collections, Joan Hornig Jewelry and Pavé the Way. Tell us a bit about Pavé the Way and why you started it? When I began 15 years ago, my goal was to produce all of the designs in New York City, create one-of-a-kind pieces, and build a brand known for accessing the power of the purse to promote the non-profits that the women who bought my jewelry cared most about supporting. With the help of such an elite retailer known for curating, I was given a platform to build a discerning and charitable clientele and be introduced to editors, international shoppers, and influencers. After the brick and mortar destinations changed to a robust internet platform, I decided to develop my e-commerce site, joanhornig.com; work more closely with non-profits that wanted salon/trunk show events; and house my designer signature line in the Museum of Art and Design (MAD) store at Columbus Circle, which draws a large and ever-changing crowd of visitors. This had the added benefits of ensuring that all purchases support the museum’s education efforts and keeping true to my commitment to having the purchaser determine where I donate 100 percent of the profit. A win-win scenario! Simultaneously, I wanted a line that would appeal to a broader spectrum of would-be philanthropists. With the help of Amazon in Europe, I created a collection of messaged jewelry made from sterling silver, 23k vermeil, and ethically sourced diamonds, at prices that are gift friendly yet aspirational and meaningful. The appeal of the Pavé the Way line has been extraordinary. What started with a gold-and-diamond vermeil microphone to amplify the voices of women who have been unable to speak up for themselves — its $365 price references the daily commitment to reach equality — garnered the attention I had dreamed of. For example, The Female Quotient, and its Girls’ Lounges held around the globe, joined me to make a statement and make a difference. Social Life



JEWELRY

Introduced at the Cannes Film Festival this spring, the Pavé the Way line is also available on pave-the-way.com, thefemalequotient.com, and at the MAD store. What causes or organizations are especially important to you? I have as my business model being an agnostic donor, trusting the purchasers to direct my charitable dollars, so my favorite non-profit and the piece that generated the donation are always determined by the last piece of jewelry sold and the charity selected. Why do you think giving back through philanthropy is so important right now? Communication through technology has made all of us citizens of the world. We are able to know more and react more quickly to needs. We also learn from the younger generation and their familiarity with disseminating information through mobile devices has spread to include all of us. Information is power, and an audience’s response to a call for action has increased. It has become contagious and easier to get involved, and it feels good and empowering. SocialLifeMagazine.com

You spent 20 years on Wall Street before being on the boards of the Museum of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. What drew you to the jewelry industry as your platform for philanthropy? Most women love jewelry, whether or not they collect it. It has sentimental value, artistic value, and investment value. It is often passed down from generation to generation for these reasons. It is noticed by other women and commented upon, making it an excellent conversation starter and an ideal opening to talk about what non-profit it also supported. From a business vantage point, I was also drawn to using jewelry because first, I love it; second, it takes very little storage space compared to other things; third, it comes alive when worn; and fourth, there is residual value in the raw materials, mitigating my financial risk if something doesn’t sell; and fifth, I predicted that my designs would more and more become a self-purchase consumer good, and I wanted to be early in catching that trend. These shops offer an array of items for any occasion. Whether it ’s a walk on the beach or an evening painting the Hamptons red, these three shops know how to cater to your needs.

MAISON 24 One of my favorite stores in the Hamptons can be found behind a large blackand-gold door. Inspired by the flare and glitz of the 1970s and ’80s, Maison 24 is a mix of traditional and trendsetting items. Ranging from home furnishings, men’s and women’s accessories, music, art, decorative objects, books, children’s accessories, and collectible toys, the shop creates a Studio 54-like feel and fun unique shopping experience. Filled with graffitied furniture, neon lights, and velvet couches, Maison 24 gives an extraordinarily quirky vibe to the Hamptons. 2424 Main Street, Bridgehampton

PERFECT PURSE

It’s summertime, so this means you’re going to have your hands full with the kids being home. To recover, you’ll need a good night’s rest. That’s where the new Allswell comes in. They just launched two mattresses — one softer and one firmer — and brought on designers Jeremiah, Genevieve Gorder, Rachel Parcell, and Athena Calderone to design bedscapes, which include everything to adorn your bed. It will look like you hired an interior decorator without the effort. Mattress prices range from $495 to $1,035 and queen bedscapes range from $980 to $1,200. allswellhome.com

When you’re traveling in the summer, the last thing you want to do is pack a million accessories . . . especially purses. That’s why Palla’s large A-bag is one of my faves! It converts into seven styles — tote, shoulder, shopper, etc. — and adds a pop of color to your everyday look. The quality is incredible too. The company uses only leather and stitching to make each purse, and there’s no lining or embellishments to distract from the natural texture of the leather. Bonus: the leather softens as it ages. $160, palla.shop

CHIC COVER-UP Just because you’re rocking a laid-back beach vibe doesn’t mean you still can’t look glam. That’s what the folks over at Island Company think at least. While they originally began with an itty-bitty bikini, the lifestyle brand now offers apparel, accessories, and other gifts for the toesin-the-sand mom. A favorite is the tangerine vagabond shirt. It’s a super soft, tunic-style piece that makes for the perfect cover-up. $135, islandcompany.com

TEA-RRIFIC What’s better than starting your day and winding down after a long one with a good cup of tea? Founder and tea connoisseur, Sarah Scarborough, traveled the globe searching for the world’s most pure and unique ingredients to create Firepot Nomadic Teas. A quintessential summertime beverage, the passion fruit lime iced tea is perfect for slow summer days spent at the pool or on the porch. And you can feel even better knowing that a percentage of sales goes to help empower and train women through ROAR Collaborative, an organization founded by Sarah to combat sex trafficking and poaching in tea-origin regions. Price is $10.49 and comes with six pouches per box (makes a half-gallon per pouch). firepot.com

SMART SNACK More time at the beach means more snacking. But you don’t want your kids filling up on unhealthy treats. Thankfully there’s Late July’s tortilla chips. The Boston-based and family-operated company was founded in 2003 by Nicole Bernard Dawes and her late father, Steve Bernard (who also founded Cape Cod Potato Chips), and was created to fill a niche in the market: delicious snack foods made with organic and non-GMO ingredients. The chips are made from wholesome, superfood ingredients such as quinoa, flax, millet, and chia and come in delicious flavors like Sea Salt by the Sea Shore and Nacho Chipotle (great alternative to Doritos). Color! Gray is not a color you associate with summer fashion. And for good reason. It tends to remind us of winter’s bleak days. So when it comes time for summer, it’s time to celebrate with bold color. Color appeared in vibrant fuchsia tints on the runways at the spring 2018 shows by designers that included Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford. Pops of bright lemon hit the runways at Saint Laurent and Balenciaga. We also spotted a fiery coral hue at Salvatore Ferragamo.

Bold Prints Bold prints splattered everywhere on the spring 2018 runways. It’s a look we love because it’s effortlessly glamorous with a ton of pattern and shine. Designers like Marc Jacobs and Versace brought us back to the ’70s disco era, while others, like Chanel, created a modern glittery look that could be worn during the day. This look is for the girl who is constantly jetsetting from a music festival to that art biennial. She’s fun and knows how to keep her Instagram feed as sparkly as her dress.

Now Monaco sparkles with the most gorgeous groups of visitors and stunning hotels. One of the coolest and most artistic kids on the block is the regal Hôtel Metropole, standing just up the street from the Casino and off the Boulingrins Gardens, in Monte-Carlo. Since its original opening in 1889, Metropole has offered guests memorable stays and experiences. Standing upon land once owned by Pope Leo XIII, the property was acquired by the Monte-Carlo Company in 1886 and was transformed into the stunning hotel you see today, where celebrities and businessmen frequent. Before entering the property, you are greeted by the Arc-de-Triomphe crafted from lush ivy. Pass through and you’ll enter into the Tuscan-style courtyard and see the iconic Belle Epoque façade of the hotel. Inside the hotel you will discover oak bookcases, authentic tapestries, and classical-inspired vases that hold gigantic, gorgeous

flower arrangements. The wonderful blend of designs continues with interiors ranging from the recently created Odysse by Karl Lagerfeld, a new pool and restaurant complex, and a sumptuous spa designed by Givenchy. Lagerfeld crafted a haute couture setting, complete with fresco-styled glass installations depicting the odyssey of Ulysses, beautifully curated gardens, and private cabanas. The 126 rooms and suites combine classical style and modern design. Interior furniture is shaped in scroll-like forms, with refined fabrics in a palette of glowing and shimmering hues, and finished with a honey-colored wood varnish. The food also impresses. Joël Robuchon, one of France’s most famous chefs and the most-awarded Michelin-starred chef, formulates superb creations for every meal. His main restaurant, one of four restaurants at the hotel, continues the retro-modern townhouse style. The hotel is truly a place where fantasy becomes reality. THE MALE BAG By Anthony Michael

EDITOR’S PICK

håndværk handvaerk.com

Exclusive is by far the best word to describe håndværk, a full collection of luxe/casual artisan menswear that exudes a quality-over-quantity sensibility. Break into this brand with what is likely the most comfortable tee ever made. We’d drop the names of some of the celebs and tech moguls who agree, but the brand would have to kill us. $100 Feel like going all in (and you should)? håndværk’s lightweight cotton polos are perfect for the Hamptons, with unique breathability and a casual flair. What sets them apart, however, is the refined, unbaggy cut, which is exactly what you deserve after spending those umpteen hours on perfecting your bod last winter. $175 Since comfort begins with undergarments, and you’re in for the tee, throw a pair of boxer briefs into your order. The superb fit and supreme comfort (brought to you via some very distinctive fabric) will amount to a serious upgrade to your top drawer. $45

London Sock Company londonsockcompany.com From hats to socks, the English have more than perfected the accessory over the centuries. London Sock Company is focused on the latter (obviously), and it’s refreshing if not complete manna to discover a purveyor of the piece of clothing you’re likely to spend more time wearing every day than any other. Truly luxe, stylish, and engineered to last, the crisp designs and superb fabric mark a new era for the modern gentleman. Daniel Craig, Sam Smith, Dev Patel, and Chris Evans are just a few of the luminaries who agree. We don’t know if they belong to the London Sock Company “Sock Club,” but you should. Check it out. From $18

Triumph & Disaster triumphanddisaster.com We’ll admit the name Triumph & Disaster drew us in, but Fibre Royal sealed the deal. With perhaps a wink and a nod to any pulp fiction fans out there, Triumph & Disaster claims that “many tread the path, but few keep the way.” We agree. This is a strong, natural styling product. A bespoke blend of beeswax as well as argan and kawakawa oils provide a low volume, strong hold — particularly great for thicker hair types. $32

SUMMER READY . . . BODY BY GREENBERG! By Blaire Bass

“Bathing suit season is almost here and there are many exciting changes in technology that have made cosmetic surgery procedures quicker, safer, and easier for the patient, while producing more natural results,” explains award-winning celebrity plastic surgeon, Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery. If you are concerned with how signs of aging are impacting your image, Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery now offers a cutting-edge, anti-aging solution in J-Plasma. J-Plasma is a one-of-a-kind non-surgical treatment that rejuvenates the face and body for a youthful appeal. Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery is the premier destination for a wide range of aesthetic solutions, including J-Plasma Lipo and J-Plasma Lift. These groundbreaking procedures provide a fusion of technology that removes unwanted fat while tightening skin. “Results are immediate and improve over time. This is the choice among men and women seeking to rejuvenate the face, neck, abdomen, bra-line, love handles, and chest. We are the only plastic surgeons in the country offering this high-tech solution,” shares Dr. Jeremy Nikfarjam, also of Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery. With J-Plasma Lipo and the J-Plasma Lift, patients are quickly back to their normal routines with virtually no detectible signs of having a procedure. Other rapid recovery procedures like breast augmentation and breast lifts are done with minimal swelling, bruising, and almost no downtime. Each procedure is customized to the individual’s face, body, breast type, and shape for beautiful, natural-looking results. Sometimes patients desire a more comprehensive treatment plan that can include liposuction, tummy tucks, body lifts, facelifts, eyelid lifts and even non-surgical services, including Botox, Restylane, and Juvéderm for deeper lines, and Kybella to eliminate submental fullness. Ultherapy is a non-invasive and safe treatment for patients who want to address cosmetic concerns on their neck, chin, cheeks, brow area, and chest. CoolSculpting is an ideal way to quickly freeze away fat while achieving noticeable results. The experienced team

IS YOUR SUNSCREEN MORE HARMFUL THAN HELPFUL? By Samira Shamoon

U

ltraviolet radiation from sun exposure is the leading cause of skin cancer, but did you know that certain sunscreens may be more harmful than helpful? There are two general types of sunscreens, physical and chemical. Chemical sunscreens contain, well, chemicals and work by absorbing the sun’s rays. Physical sunscreens (zinc oxide and titanium oxide) deflect/block the sun’s rays. In short, experts say that physical (mineral) sunscreens are safer and less irritating than chemical sunscreens, but there’s a catch: the dreaded white residue! To solve the white residue left by mineral sunscreens, nanotechnology, or micronization, has been implemented. Nanotechnology produces nanoparticles so small that they don’t leave a residue. Great, right? Well, there’s another catch. There is much discussion about nanoparticles possibly causing oxidative damage to the skin or greater harm to the body because they can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. Also, up for debate is the possibility that nanoparticles coated with aluminum or silicon

can break down in the bottle. So, are they or aren’t they safe? The debate continues, but while the jury is out, why risk it? Most consumers are unaware of the potential dangers or the fact that there are non-micronized SPFs available that don’t leave the dreaded white residue! Organic skincare line Kimberly Sayer of London offers two non-micronized SPFs: ultra light facial moisturizer SPF 30 and antioxidant daily moisturizing cream SPF 30. Sun safely this summer!

MENTAL TIPS FOR PHYSICAL HEALTH By L. A. Dawson

L.A. Dawson is the author of articles, self-help books, and novels. She is also an inspirational speaker and resides in New Jersey with four happy canine friends. @authorladawson | authorladawson.com

O

ur fast-paced world is more demanding on our bodies than ever. Work hours have increased, forcing us to arise in the dark and return home after sunset. Less time for exercise, meditation, and a healthy diet means a stressed body and brain. As an athletic person who suffered neurological Lyme disease with paralysis, followed shortly thereafter by a traumatic accident, I had to draw upon all that I knew about how thoughts could help positively change health. I did not invent the law of attraction or mind-over-matter theories, but I lived them daily before Lyme disease and my accident. I became more conscious of these afterward and believe they were essential to my recovery. Thinking positively about my health and refusing negativity in any part of my life, combined with exercise and meditation, have played a big part in restoring my health. When people share their catastrophic health stories with me, I empathize, but say a positive mantra in my head: My body is completely healthy and functions perfectly! If they continue with their negativity, I excuse myself because negative does attract negative, and I do not want to get caught up in that. If you are physically or mentally vulnerable, it is especially important to surround yourself with happy, positive people. Their positive energy is contagious and being in their presence is a source for well-being. You can use your mind to neutralize what may exist physically, to positively affect the outcome. This way of thinking can change all aspects of your life. From personal experience, I have tried different things, and nine of them are in my daily repertoire to maintain good health. I practice each with a smile in my heart and a positive outlook.

1

Instead of complaining about all that I have lost, I choose to be grateful for all that I have. I spend time speaking aloud all that I am thankful for whenever I realize I have gone beyond a limitation.

2

I reserve time for meditation with calming and essential oils. Lavender oil and amethyst have a peaceful effect on most people. Breathing mindfully helps quiet the brain from the day’s worries.

3 4 5 6 7 8 9

I say my mantra for perfect health throughout the day. I intend to attract only positivity in every aspect of my life. My diet reflects the colors of the rainbow, comprises variety, and avoids anything to excess. I exercise with the correct adaptation for any injury or limitation I might have. I supplement my diet with essential vitamins and minerals as well as plenty of sunshine! I practice Earthing by walking barefoot. Studies show this has a positive effect on our mental and physical health. I believe with every fiber in my being that I am healthy and happy. I am thankful for the greater good and hope my positivity can touch someone’s heart today.

For me, time is not the enemy but rather my ally. Perspective is everything and creating a good habit will take 21 days at least. Wrap your head around this timeframe and jump into the pool of positivity that absolutely will lead to a healthier you! Social Life

GET READY FOR YOUR SUMMER BODY. FAST! By Stacey Griffith

W

hat if I told you that if you don’t have time to take a 45 minute exercise class, you could still reap the benefits of that class by simply moving at full power for three 60-second intervals, each followed by moving at slow power for three minutes. Full-powered exercises include cycling, swimming, sprinting, fast jumping jacks, high-knee thrusts. Slower exercises are walking and stretching. Knowing this, would you still make an excuse? Of course not. Everyone has 12 minutes a day to move. This exercise program is based on the work of Martin Gibala, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Always check with a doctor before you start any new fitness challenge, especially this one. And you may or may not need the entire three-minute slow-down following pushes. Start with the three minutes at first. If you find that your heartrate is back to its resting rate before the three minutes is up, you can shave the time in between sets. Most people in metropolitan cities call boutique fitness classes their second homes. Fitness families are the new community drivers today. But what if you aren’t part of that community? How can you inject motivation into your life every morning if you don’t have the time for classes before summer hits? You can! The exercises described above and watching what you eat will ensure that you feel physically good. When you start to feel healthier and look better, you’ll be motivated to keep going. I highly recommend cleaning up your diet now, so that by the time the Fourth of July rolls around, you are feeling tight and light in that new summer wardrobe, and are ready to walk down to that shoreline with confidence and grace. Losing body fat doesn’t have to be daunting, in fact exercise can be fun and eating well can still be delicious. By cutting out little things like added sugar, bread with dinner, fried foods, candy, ice cream — things like that — you’ll notice a significant change in your waistline. My 32 years in the health and wellness field informs my belief that anyone at any age can get into the best shape of their life if they want to. You have to have the desire and will to feel better than you’ve ever felt. I write about this in my book Two Turns From Zero, available from Amazon. Decide now, before you finish this article, why you need to be in better shape. Once you decide, I want you to download four songs that you can exercise to three times a week. Today can be the day you start to exercise and clean up how you SocialLifeMagazine.com

eat. And don’t use the word “diet”; you’re not on a diet, you’re on a mission! If you have time for a class and want to be part of our fitness family, we’d love to welcome you to SoulCycle. Our newly renovated Barn in Bridgehampton is gorgeous. Stacey Griffith soulcycle.com

THE ART OF HAIR PART I By Denise Snider

D

r. Keith R. Durante M.D., F.A.C.S. is a perfectionist. Plus. A highly trained, board certified general surgeon, with over 25 years’ experience in general and micro-vascular surgeries, Dr. Keith Durante, in recent years, parlayed an already esteemed career in one of the most delicate areas of critical medicine into another space critical to people’s lives: hair transplantation for men and women. “I have to admit, when I explained to my colleagues that I wanted to pursue a new area of medicine, they said ‘are you crazy?’ ” Dr. Durante muses. “You’re a high-powered, fellowship-trained micro-vascular surgeon who is replacing aortas, restoring limbs, fixing carotid arteries, and saving lives. Now you’re going into hair?” Dr. Durante says that his normal reaction was “Well, yeah!” And, the rest is manna for the men and women of New York — and far beyond — who are used to getting only the best. Now they don’t have to look far for it. “I tell the naysayers to think about it: There’s not much on the body that’s finer than hair. New technology eliminates the barbaric, ugly scarring of former methods, allowing people to wear their hair short, and no one will know they’ve had a transplant,” says Dr. Durante. “So, for single hair transplant, who better than someone who’s used to working with suture materials that are finer than hair.” A number of things set Dr. Durante apart in what has become a crowded field of would-be perfectionists in hair restoration, and most of those attributes are what allow adding the word “fine” before “art.” “The satisfaction of improving someone’s self-image is what truly moves me, and I have learned that my credentials are a gift, allowing me to really take this area of medicine to the next level,” says Dr. Durante. “The connection between the physical appearance and self-image can be vital. This underscores the psychological aspect of this profession, which is often overlooked.” Durante says that he has seen patients come into his office who are flat-out depressed. These are men and women who look in the mirror and are unhappy with themselves. Dr. Durante loves to help these patients. “Why should someone wait and make a hard decision harder,” he asks. Dr. Durante has indeed beDr. Durante with Project Liz Pygmy family in Uganda.

come the go-to for various methods that Social Life will explore in a series of articles throughout the 2018 season. From treating scalp hair loss to fixing horrendous botch jobs to transforming eyebrows (a feature, that literally can make or break your facial expression), Dr. Durante has perfected it all. Additionally, he is a frequent traveler to Africa, where he volunteers his knowledge, insights, and surgical skills at hospitals in Uganda. He is a true renaissance man, in the Italian vein. But, here in the States, he is laser focused. “Hair is my dedicated practice, and I’ve never been happier. I take great pride in the medical management of hair loss, which is about maintaining existing hair by dealing with certain causes of hair loss. Medical management can be even more important than the gold standard of hair transplant,” says Dr. Durante. “I am lucky to have found this new profession, and thrilled that thousands of people have discovered me and my practice.” Dr. Keith R. MARTIN L. FOX, MD THE LASER MASTER By Frances Gormley

D

r. Martin L. Fox, a preeminent ophthalmologist and LASIK luminary, is one of “America’s Top Doctors” as noted by Castle Connolly’s physicians directory for over 10 years running. He is a true visionary in his specialty — and a LASER MASTER. Dr. Fox is Medical Director of the Corneal and Refractive Surgery Practice of New York and Clarity Refractive Services of New Jersey. He is affiliated with Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital of Lenox Hill Hospital. A leader in the field of refractive surgery — the specialty devoted to correcting and improving one’s eyesight, Dr. Fox is a pioneer of the newest and most advanced technologies in vision correction. He offers options for patients who were not previously candidates for surgery, or whose previous laser surgery requires correction or refinement.

FDA-approved and vanguard procedures offered by Dr. Fox include:

Not all laser correction is the same, nor is every ophthalmic vision correction surgeon. Our eyes are irreplaceable, so it is critical to choose a surgeon who has advanced skills in diagnosis, treatment planning options, procedures, aftercare, and patient services. Dr. Fox has been instrumental in the introduction of every new refractive technology introduced over the last two decades. He has performed over 30,000 surgeries throughout his 25 years as a fellowship-trained corneal specialist, innovating new techniques and inventing surgical instruments to improve outcomes. In the last year and half, Dr. Fox has performed more than 3,000 iDesign LASIK procedures, making him a national leader. “iDesign is 500% more accurate than previous generations of LASIK,” explains Dr. Fox. “It allows safe, customized treatment and predictable outcomes for each patient, beyond anything previously possible. iDesign mathematically guides the laser, often resulting in superior clarity and sharpness, exceeding a patient’s glasses or contact lenses. It can even correct high degrees of astigmatism.” Later this year, Dr. Fox will be among the first to introduce the SMILE procedure, a revolutionary alternative to LASIK for nearsightedness. SMILE (SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction) provides LASIK-quality correction without requiring a corneal flap, increasing safety while decreasing the risk of complications. A single laser re-shapes the cornea, coupled with a tiny 1mm incision. It is painless, heals quickly, and takes less than 10 minutes per eye. Our Fourth of July issue will include a fascinating interview with Dr. Fox, and our August 10 issue will discuss the new KAMRA Inlay procedure to eliminate reading glasses, which can be combined with LASIK to restore vision at all distances. See laserfox.com for a wealth of information about procedures. The Corinthian 345 East 37th Street 212.838.1053

DR . KENNETH MARK COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY EXPERT By Rodney Sparrow

HAMPTONS, SOHO, & ASPEN As an avid skier, outdoorsman, and physical fitness aficionado, Dr. Kenneth Mark knows firsthand about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and the effects of the elements on our skin. While he openly admits that his favorite “office” for a cosmetic consultation is the Aspen Mountain gondola, Dr. Mark also finds it rewarding to take care of the skin cancer and cosmetic concerns of patients on the East End. “Practicing in multiple locales that have that small town feel has allowed me to become embedded in the communities and to support various local charities. It’s not just work, it’s being part of something bigger,” says Dr. Mark, who also has an office in Soho.

BEST DOCTORS LIST Dr. Kenneth Mark was twice named to the “Best Doctors” list that represents the top 5% of physicians in the United States as selected by other doctors. This is arguably the most prestigious honor a doctor can receive. Specifically, Dr. Mark’s expertise is in cosmetic dermatology, injectables, lasers, peels, Kybella, skin cancer detection and cure, Mohs surgery, acne, and rosacea. After three years of training in dermatology at NYU, Dr. Mark completed a two-year fellowship with a cosmetic dermatology surgeon and a plastic surgeon, in order to sub-specialize in cosmetic procedures, plastic reconstruction, and minimally invasive Mohs micrographic skin cancer surgery. “The surgeries I perform on the delicate features of a face are of the highest quality and are my real areas of expertise,” he says. Years of performing micro-focused Mohs skin cancer surgery has given Dr. Mark precision, knowledge of anatomy, and experience that translate to being a better injector when it comes to Botox and fillers. SocialLifeMagazine.com

ULTHERAPY One of the most requested treatments is Ultherapy, the only FDA-cleared non-surgical procedure that actually lifts the skin in one treatment. It lifts the jawline, jowls, neck, and eyelids without surgery. And there is virtually no downtime. “You can go to the beach the next day; you can go to a cocktail party that night,” says Dr. Mark.

COOLSCULPTING Another patient favorite is CoolSculpting, a noninvasive way to improve your beach body by freezing fat. Unlike liposuction, it avoids the risks of anesthesia or denting from removing too much fat. There is also no downtime with this procedure. Dr. Mark was the first in the Hamptons to offer the “cool advantage,” which cuts the treatment time almost in half!

FILLERS & LASERS Dr. Mark offers the most up-todate and best-in-class noninvasive cosmetic treatments, including MixTo fractional CO2 laser, Botox, Juvéderm, and Voluma, which he says is the greatest filler ever invented, because it is extremely safe, adding volume with the most natural results. “Voluma allows me to think like an artist and lift and sculpt the face in three dimensions, instead of just filling lines and wrinkles.” Vollure and Volbella are two additional hyaluronic acid fillers that allow customization of each patient’s treatment. NYC SMILE DESIGN DENTISTRY AS A PASSION AND PRIVILEGE By Judith Pearlman

W

hen you have a real passion for what you do, you give it everything you’ve got. That goes double when your partner works alongside you and shares that intensity at the office and in a marriage that has flourished since 1995. For Drs. Ramin Tabib and Elisa Mello, dentistry is more than medicine; it’s a passion. They founded NYC Smile Design after discovering their goals and attitudes were a good match for full-time togetherness. As partners, they have created an exceptionally wide-ranging practice — from cosmetic reconstructive dentistry to invisible orthodontics; ingenious ways to relieve pain (including Botox); and to sculpt ideal, expressive and always individual natural smiles. Along the way they have mastered psychology and balance, how to remain sensitive to the emotional needs of their patients (and each other) while staying on top of the fastmoving technology in their profession. It’s complicated, and it can be demanding. Both Drs. Tabib and Mello have learned that having downtime at home is essential to remaining at the top of their game at the office. Their serene Hamptons retreat and a New York apartment with views of trees, flowers, water, and sunsets allow them to recharge; their passion for travel has led them, as a family, to Macchu Picchu, Vietnam, and Kenya, absorbing the diversity that has extended to their roster of patients from around the world. “We practice at a very high level, and bring a unique partnership to our office,” says Dr. Tabib. “Our ability to collaborate on cases

It’s at these moments that the importance of the couple’s perfectionism becomes clear. “When patients come to us because previous procedures elsewhere didn’t work out, or if they’ve come for their first or a new procedure, we take the time to carefully explain the necessary steps and a realistic timeline for a quality outcome,” adds Dr. Tabib. “We are honest about what the steps will be, how long they will take, and — the good news — how they will radically improve the patient’s comfort and confidence. That honesty builds trust, and a relationship for the long run.” The doctors also believe that listening is the key to establishing these relationships, as it has nurtured their own. Perhaps this is never more critical than with patients who have given up any hope of ever having a normal appearance. “Everyone has a story, and it’s essential for us to recognize the unique wants, needs, fears, and hopes of each patient who comes to us,” says Dr. Mello. More to the point, perhaps, is the dedication that compelled them to spend the better part of a year compiling the information it includes, allowing patients to learn about their options before they make their first appointments. It’s a gift in the spirit of the practice. “When we take on a case, we’re not number crunchers. We don’t work to fill quotas to be profitable,” explains Dr. Tabib, a firm believer in the value of prevention. He delights in enticing his patients to learn the habit of oral health, and how it can keep future procedures to a minimum. “Being successful is important, but being successful at what we do and loving it is more important. Dr. Mello agrees: “For us, helping people transform their lives through dentistry remains our passion, and a privilege.”

THE WELLNESS CHEAT SHEET By Erika Bloom

P

art of being your best, most beautiful self is incorporating holistic wellness into your daily life. Many wellness practices come from ancient wisdom. Others have been developed and proven with the use of modern science. From these ample options you can curate a program that nurtures your body, prevents disease, slows aging, and supports healthy weight, energy, focus, and glow. In the process of creating a wellness routine, whether you are new to holistic practices or are already on the journey, begin with your focus on the following five things.

1. Move mindfully every day. Movement impels lymph and blood to nurture your cells and joints, keeping your skin and body younger inside and out. It also improves your brain chemistry, keeping you happier and preventing memory loss. Choose Pilates, yoga, and walking. Gentle, mindful methods like these have been proven to be the most effective at retaining mobility, strength, and flexibility while preventing wear-and-tear and injury.

2. Breathe.

Breath-work improves your body’s response to stress. This change improves immunity, digestion, and hormonal balance. Choose a pranayama or breath-work practice with your Pilates, yoga, or meditation teacher. Or do a home breath practice. Simply inhale deeply and slowly into your lungs, expanding your belly and ribcage. Retain the breath for a moment. Exhale slowly and evenly through your nose, allowing your belly to deepen as you empty the air.

3. Consider your biome.

The bacterial balance in your gut is integral to your health. It affects your digestion, your immunity, hormones, brain chemistry, even your weight set point. Feed the good bacteria with healthy foods, restore it with probiotics and fermented foods, and starve the bad bacteria by avoiding sugar, alcohol, and white flours. Choose Sakara daily probiotic blend; eat salads of raw dandelion greens, asparagus, radishes, and leeks; drink kombucha by Monbrewcha or eat kimchi.

4. Hydrate.

Every cell in your body needs water — from your brain to your heart to your muscles. Proper hydration is essential to having energy, beautiful skin, and overall good health. Your body needs fluids to transport nutrients, eliminate waste, maintain temperature, and circulate healing white blood cells. Try starting your day with warm lemon water to begin hydrating and get digestion going. Keep a Soma glass carafe with filter full to always have clean water on hand. You can also make infused waters to tempt yourself to drink more. Steep fresh organic ginger, mint, and lemon or any combination of herbs and fruit in a pitcher of water. SocialLifeMagazine.com

5. Sleep.

Sleep is when healing happens. You need enough sleep and good quality sleep to lower inflammation, improve memory, prevent weight gain, brighten your mood, and have beautiful skin. Choose rituals and an environment to support sleep. Download a program to eliminate blue light from your devices and use black-out blinds to prevent disruption of your circadian rhythm. Practice gentle stretching, drink a calming tea, and breathe in lavender organic essential oils before bed. As you begin to explore what works for you, stay in tune with how you feel and what you need to get to your best place. Each person is unique. You require your own specific regimen to keep your systems in harmony. Stay committed to incorporating wellness practices into each day. Nurture your body to maintain balance for good health, energy, focus, and glow.

SHARON GRASSO PERMANENT TOUCH COSMETICS By Christine Montanti

S

haron Grasso began her career in the beauty industry in 1995 while simultaneously pursuing her passion as an artist. Her creativity and lifelong dedication to art, coupled with her extensive professional experience, has made Sharon one of the most skilled permanent makeup experts in the industry. Sharon has two decades of experience as a licensed aesthetician and a dually-licensed medical micropigmentation artist. She is also an instructor and advisory board member at the prestigious Long Island Nail, Skin, and Hair Institute, which offers the only New York State-approved curriculum for permanent makeup. Known for her proficiency in permanent makeup, Sharon has managed to garner an extensive client list that comprises celebrity names ranging in age from 19 to 92. Sharon’s soughtafter aesthetic services and procedures include permanent makeup for eyebrows, lips, eyelids, lash enhancements, and scar correction. She also offers a variety of laser services, including SkinTyte for skin tightening, Forever Young BBL for skin rejuvenation and rosacea treatments; laser hair removal; stem cell masks; and chemical peels. As a NY State-licensed permanent makeup instructor, Sharon educates students on the innovative technique of microblading for eyebrow enhancement. This procedure is done by using a manual tool as opposed to a digital machine. Although microblading is currently a huge trend, Sharon maintains her own expert opinion on the innovative procedure. Sharon has spent over 20 years refining her craft in aesthetics and she believes that microblading is not always the most effective way to deposit color into the skin. In fact, Sharon’s tool of choice is a nanoneedle to create hair strokes with shading for a 3D fusion-brow. Sharon says there is a huge misconception about tattoo machines. She explains that tattoo machines can actually create fine, natural-looking hair strokes that will last longer and will be more true to the color than a microblade. This technique is achieved by setting the pen of the digital machine for a specified penetration to get the pigment into the precise layer of

skin; therefore, creating the best result. This is opposed to a microblade that actually opens up the skin with a blade to get the pigment into the skin, which tends to be a lot less consistent, requiring more touch-ups, and causing a lot more skin trauma. However, Sharon feels there is a place for microblading in the aesthetic industry providing the technician is highly skilled and the microblade is being used correctly. Sharon currently offers her aesthetic services in the offices of nationally renowned cosmetic plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, located in Woodbury, NY, and she receives referrals from many NY-based plastic surgeons. Sharon recently celebrated the launch of a new location where she will be collaborating with the celebrity stylist Joel Warren, who has over 30 years of professional beauty experience. Warren is the cofounder of New York’s Warren and Tricomi Salon and the owner of The Salon Project, located in Saks Fifth Avenue in Huntington, NY. Warren will be opening up salons in 10 Saks Fifth Avenue stores nationwide. Sharon is incredibly excited to be showcasing a variety of her cutting-edge services and procedures using the latest state-of-the-art equipment. NUBEST SALON & SPA CELEBRATING 45 YEARS By Gianna Froccaro

W

hen nuBest first opened on June 19, 1973, this salon and spa began a culture that emphasizes exceptional service with unparalleled quality. And it’s been this way for the last 45 years at its first and only location: 1482 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset. The 1970s was an exciting time for beauty and hair — a decade that featured some of history’s most iconic hairstyles: the shag; the wedge-cut; the Afro; the long center-part, and the Farrah Fawcett flip. “We’ve always been on the pulse with what’s trending in fashion and beauty,” says nuBest owner Michael Mazzei, who remembers the Goldie Hawn pixie as the hairstyle everyone wanted. For the last four decades, nuBest has been one of the leading salons on Long Island, with a staff of more than 125 beauty professionals offering an array of innovative and customized services, including haircuts, styling, and color, specialty hair treatments (yes, the perm is “in” again), makeup, skincare, and various spa services. In fact, nuBest has always managed to generate a buzz in and out of the salon with Mazzei at the helm. “We’ve created a culture that emphasizes exceptional service with unparalleled quality,” says Mazzei, whose salon has graced the pages of some of the country’s top beauty and fashion magazines and appeared on the big screen in 1985 in the movie Desperately Seeking Susan. Even with an A-list clientele that includes celebrities, Hollywood industry insiders, and fashion editors, everyone at nuBest gets the star treatment. “Bringing in big names isn’t necessarily the endgame,” says Mazzei. “My goal has always been consistent: to make every single client feel like the best version of themselves.” Mazzei is not only an accomplished businessman, but also a trendsetter and visionary. With his collaborator and friend Leland Hirsch, Mazzei launched ARTec Worldwide, an innovative global hair care brand that was ultimately purchased by L’Oreal in 2002. nuBest is also known for its philanthropic endeavors and dedication to the community. Since its beginning, it has teamed up with local and global charities to support and promote awareness of many different worthwhile causes. “I am so proud of what my family and I have been able to achieve with nuBest. We have created a community for our clients, with the help of some of New York’s best stylists,” says Mazzei.

Michael Mazzei

“It has been an incredible experience to witness firsthand how the salon has evolved over the years. Celebrating nuBest’s 45th anniversary feels like a dream.” Mazzei looks forward to the future of nuBest salon and spa as led by the next generation of the Mazzei family — Jamie Mazzei, Vincent Cascio, and Christian Fleres — as they carry on the salon’s reputation for setting trends and providing superior service. nuBest Salon & Spa nubestsalon.com 516.627.9444 Social Life

PEARLY WHITES By Esther Maine

atching up with Dr. Jacquie Smiles has become a tradition for our inaugural summer issue of Social Life, and this year is no different. An institution across New York, Dr. Smiles is not only known locally, but now nationally and even internationally for her commitment to helping people achieve a glittering smile. “I always look forward to giving SLM readers a sneak peek into some of the innovations I’m working on to help people look and feel great,” says Dr. Jacquie, who you may have seen in the news recently when she joined Groupon CEO Rich Williams for his ringing of the NASDAQ opening bell. Dr. Jacquie, an undisputed leader in orthodontics, the national spokesperson for Invisalign, and a bona fide trailblazer for teeth whitening, may very well be ringing the bell herself someday as her prominence in the dental field continues to grow. So, we wanted to know what she’s up to in 2018. “Believe it or not, I’ve been spending a lot of my time in a laboratory working on a formula that will revolutionize the way that people whiten their teeth,” Dr. Jacquie confided, adding that she can’t give too many details about her foray into science. While Dr. Jacquie is mixing it up in the lab to solve a real problem in teeth whitening, there is something new people can try in the meantime for whitening on the go. The Dr. Smiles Pop and Prime Whitening Pen is a convenient accessory, and is perfect for whitening and stain removal before and after a professional whitening and can be used several times a day after coffee, red wine, or foods that cause stains. It really keeps your smile bright and white,” says Dr. Jacquie. What makes her manna for the masses is that she is about so much more than just her own products. In fact, she scours the industry, constantly testing new innovations, and giving the very best of them the Dr. Smiles Platinum Seal of Approval. Members who join the Dr. Smiles VIP program receive a quarterly delivery of dental products — a mix of Dr. Jacquie’s as well as others she’s approved. Dr. Jacquie and her Dr. Smiles team are truly committed to finding great, state-of-the-art, unique, and cool products that people are going to love and truly benefit from, and this is a winning concept that gives people access to exceptional innovations that are vetted and approved by a true leader in this industry. To boot, she SocialLifeMagazine.com

and her team are absolutely committed to “local,” using U.S. labs for her own products, and sourcing as many others as possible within the U.S. “It’s an absolute imperative,” she says. Dr. Jacquie notes that that’s the type of work that really keeps her energized. However, her passion for wellness transcends products and services. “One of the things that really motivates me is the impact my team and I are having through the Dr. Smiles Foundation, and I am absolutely thrilled to share that we’re donating 10% of all product sales to various foundations geared toward putting a stop to bullying and cyber bullying,” says Dr. Jacquie. “This is an issue that’s pervasive among young people and starts locally but often leads to bigger and more dangerous issues. The ripple effects are global and in both instances, heartbreaking.” Dr. Jacquie also promised SLM readers an exclusive update on all that time in the lab in an upcoming issue of this magazine. Let’s just say from what we are hearing behind the scenes, Dr. Jacquie has cracked the code on teeth whitening and sensitivity.” We’re on the edge of our seats! SPRING FORWARD By Josey Greenwell

O

ne of the best parts for me about the weather warming up is I’m much more inclined to get outside and move. Whether that’s taking the scenic route to work, walking a couple of more blocks around Manhattan, or hitting the treadmill for double the run time, spring just makes it all feel a little bit easier. Our winter this year was a tough one, so let’s enjoy this season to the fullest. Here’s a helpful hint for you that helps me keep my “eyes on the prize” so I can look and feel my best come swimsuit time. Think about the word “forward” and what that means to you. It doesn’t necessarily mean the future, but everything you do points you in that direction. So why not make each step a positive one toward achieving a bigger goal that you have set for yourself ? I think about my current fitness routine and how today’s workout will push me forward to that goal. Trust the process and know that each step you take is indeed moving you forward to your better self . . . in the future! With the temperature finally above freezing, I added a daily outside run on top of my weight training program. It was the perfect way to knock out two birds with one stone — get some cardio and enjoy the weather! For me, it’s not about the distance of my run or the intensity of the location I choose. It’s about connecting with myself in an hour long session every day, to zone out and get myself moving. Since this addition, I have noticed I am in a better mood and have improved mental clarity throughout the day. Not only does it help me wake up, but I am in a much happier state of mind when I do. I am better able to deal with the hustle and bustle that makes up New York City. Suddenly, that delayed MTA train doesn’t seem so bad! I also noticed, after allowing myself ample time to cool down and stretch after a run, that my mobility drastically increased as well. Everyday activities didn’t seem to stress me as much as they used to. Trust me, I am not a runner and don’t claim to be one. I’d much rather throw dumbbells around in a gym! But I do enjoy this time to myself. Running allows me to reconnect on a mind-soul kind of level, rather than the mind-muscle connection I’m so familiar with in the gym. So pick one thing that will get you off your couch and out of your comfort zone and get moving! I promise, whatever addition you make to your day, no matter how big or how small, will help you spring forward. Remember, every step counts. But those steps have to be now, because the best version of yourself is waiting for you. Josey Greenwell @joseygreenwell SocialLifeMagazine.com

ANGELINA JOLIE EVOLUTION OF BEAUTY By Winter Fairchild

When you see Angelina Jolie in an oversized sweater, curled up on a chair, hair wind-swept, with a coy cat-like smile, it’s hard not to think, This is a woman who doesn’t have a care in the world. Her reality is the opposite of a lazy day at the beach. She’s a mother of six, movie director, movie star, UN ambassador, humanitarian, and global citizen. Right now she’s filming two new Disney movies: Maleficient 2 and The One and Only Ivan. Yet it can be argued that the most interesting aspect of this incredible celebrity is the evolution of her character and the transcendence of her physical beauty by her deep emotional life. To date, Jolie has received an Oscar, two SAG awards, and three Golden Globes, and has received ten nominations for film and television roles. Jolie first rattled Hollywood in the HBO film Gia. Her role as a troubled model with self-destructive tendencies and heavy drug use was a far cry from the mainstream fairy tale movies of the ’90s. Although she was initially worried that HBO would try to tease out a pretty story from Gia’s experience, Angelina moved forward with the role. The filming ended up being a harrowing experience for Jolie and the emotional toll of becoming Gia moved her to briefly study screenwriting to clear her head. At this point,

SocialLifeMagazine.com

she was just a fledgling star, but the industry took note of her impactful beauty and the roles started to pour in. She quickly filmed Playing by Heart, Pushing Tin, and The Bone Collector opposite Denzel Washington. Although she had chosen the edgy role of Gia in order to be taken as a serious actress, it seemed that her beauty catapulted her quickly into mainstream roles. A year after Gia, Angelina Jolie came back to the big screen in a major way. She starred in Girl, Interrupted and this time she made waves in Hollywood both on camera and off. The movie was supposed to have been an Oscar vehicle for Winona Ryder, who was the film’s lead actress and executive producer. Winona fought for Jolie, a relatively unknown actress at the time, to be a part of the film. Later, when Jolie won an Oscar for her role as Lisa Rowe in the film, the tabloids exploded with rumors of Winona’s disappointment over not being thanked for the opportunity she gave Jolie. But even more explosive was Jolie’s edgy behavior at the 2000 Oscars. Her dress and long black hair were reminiscent of Morticia Addams, and a kiss on the lips with her brother, James Haven, seemed to linger too long for anyone’s comfort. That kiss was a repeat of one photographed at the Golden Globes

three months earlier. After that moment, it seemed like a string of strange publicity from wearing matching blood vials with her then husband, Billy Bob Thornton, to very bluntly discussing extreme behaviors of her youth as often as possible. For a long time, her rebel without a cause way of life filled the tabloids and cast her in the role of bad girl. Although it’s a piece of her persona she hasn’t quite shaken free of, there has been a transformation in Angelina Jolie’s personal life. After adopting her son Maddox, Jolie started to channel the angst that drove her strange public persona into a less indulgent focus, that of changing the world into a more positive place. The rebel found a cause when she was filming Tomb Raider in Cambodia, a war-torn country that opened her eyes. After she wrapped filming, she reached out to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the agency whose main focus is the well-being of refugees and displaced people. In 2001, she began traveling to places ravaged by war with devastating refugee problems. To date, Jolie has done over 40 field missions, has been named Goodwill Ambassador for multiple countries, and is the first person the

UN has ever given a “Citizen of the World” award to. During her acceptance speech at the UN Correspondents Association Awards at Cipriani Wall Street, Jolie said that she feels “a sense of responsibility towards all other people all around the world fighting for the freedoms that we are very lucky to have secured years ago. And for me, this is what it means to be a citizen of the world: seeing yourself in the struggles of others.” Her own personal struggles have taken quite a shift. When she first started making waves in Hollywood, she talked about her knife collection and her childhood dreams of working in a funeral home. After traveling the world with the UN and becoming a mother of six, Jolie decided to act on the knowledge that she carried the same gene that was responsible for her mother’s early death from ovarian cancer. She underwent two surgeries: first a double mastectomy, then an operation to remove her ovaries, and she has talked about this openly — in an Op Ed piece in the New York Times and magazine articles. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Jolie said, “I actually feel more of a woman because I feel like I’m being smart about my choices, and I’m putting my family first, and I’m in charge

of my life and my health. I think that’s what makes a woman complete.” Jolie said what keeps her up at night is thinking, “Did I do a great job as a mom or was that an average day? I’ve been trying for nine months to be really good at just being a homemaker and picking up dog poop and cleaning dishes and reading bedtime stories… And I’m getting better at all three.” Most recently, Jolie has become the face for Mon Guerlain Eau de Parfum Florale. Once upon a time Jolie was a punk who colored her hair with sharpies, and now she is the face of an iconic brand whose definition of beauty is grounded in experience and not surface aesthetics. Discussing beauty with InStyle, Jolie said, “My mom used to say when I was little, ‘Let me see your soul.’ That was her thing. Whenever I’d get upset or something, she’d say, ‘Let me see your soul.’ What it meant was, ‘Show me you. Are you mad? Let me see.’ I’ve never really talked about that. I think, I hope anyway, that’s how I’m raising my children: Put what’s inside you forward and find you, figure out who you are. Beauty — everybody has a different opinion about what that is. Intellect is

the most beautiful. When you see somebody who has a mind on fire, that’s sexy. A person who is empathetic and thoughtful and passionate — there’s nothing more attractive than that. There’s nothing you could wear or put on your face to cover up if your mind is blank and your heart is dark . . . I look in the mirror and I see that I look like my mother, and that warms me. I also see myself aging, and I love it because it means I’m alive — I’m living and getting older. Don’t love having a random dark spot from a pregnancy, sure. I see my flaws. But what I see that I like isn’t about a structure or an appearance. It’s more that I see my family in my face. I see my age.” Jolie has moved from a woman who shocked everyone with her incredible beauty and unorthodox behavior to someone who values mastering quotidian activities of motherhood and believes aging is beautiful. She is truly a role model in today’s predominantly Kardashian culture, which focuses on makeup and social media. Hopefully more women of all ages will look to emulate Jolie’s growth and self-acceptance.

MICHAEL G. IRVING THE FIRST YEAR AS MAYOR OF THE VILLAGE OF SOUTHAMPTON By Jean Shafiroff

M

What are some of the accomplishments that you have made during your first year as the Mayor of the Village of Southampton? And what are you most proud of ? There have been so many issues that we’ve been working on, but one of the most important is the issue of zoning, which we’ve addressed after extensive research by our Planning Commission. Following a series of informative public hearings, we’ve made changes to our zoning codes to reduce the impact of larger homes in our Village and particularly in neighborhoods that are made up of smaller parcels of land. In addition, we passed legislation which provides for a property tax exemption on renovations that were necessitated due to disabilities.

sewer systems, known as I/A or innovative and alternative onsite waste water treatment systems. In fact, the Village has installed an I/A system in Agawam Park for our new restrooms.

As many know, Southampton Village has a strong commitment to preserve and protect our water supply and ground water. To that end, we have passed a local law which requires new construction and certain renovations within the areas designated by the town as priority areas to install more advanced

Recent Community Preservation Fund purchases are enabling us to expand Agawam Park to include the former Doscher property. This will allow us to provide more activity areas with exciting equipment designed for children of all ages. We are also creating a new park on Moses Lane on an eleven-acre par-

We have all heard about the Community Preservation Fund, but how has it specifically helped the Village of Southampton and our park areas? This year, we have worked extensively to create a plan, which we have presented to the town, that identifies priority areas that could be purchased using Community Preservation Funds, which would be a great enhancement to the village. We are also working with Peconic Land Trust to preserve property on the bay front of Meadow Lane.

ichael G. Irving is about to begin his second year as the Mayor of the Village of Southampton. He was sworn in last July 3, replacing Mayor Mark Epley, who chose not to seek reelection after 12 years in office. Below is an interview about Mayor Iriving’s first year in office.

cel that will include walking trails and other activities. At the request of many of our younger residents, we are adding basketball courts at Lola Prentice Park. With summer coming, are there any new programs or events that are scheduled? We have just passed a local law to create the Ocean Rescue Department of the Village of Southampton that will work with our first responders and lifeguards to further ensure the safety of our residents and visitors when they’re in the water. This volunteer group has been working with the group in East Hampton to bring this much-needed program to Southampton Village and the individuals are about to undergo rigorous testing to secure the necessary certifications. Having this new volunteer squad will provide an additional layer of protection for beachgoers. Summer is such a busy time, and there are so many activities for our residents and visitors to enjoy and participate in. Our SocialLifeMagazine.com

many cultural arts organizations, including Southampton Cultural Center, Southampton Arts Center, Southampton History Museum, and of course Rogers Memorial Library, all offer a host of programs and events throughout the summer season as well as year round. Our popular Concert in the Park Series starts July 3rd and runs through Labor Day in Agawam Park, and the Chamber of Commerce will again host the weekly Farmers Market on the grounds of 25 Jobs Lane. There’s always something to do! Everyone is talking about the U.S. Open coming to Shinnecock Hills in June. Is there anything you want to share about how it might impact the Village? You know, the U.S. Open offers many opportunities for the East End and we’re honored to welcome them back to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club from June 11 to July 17. We’ve been working with the USGA team for the past year on logistics and different things we can do to complement the Open. We are setting up a couple of designated areas within the village for

transportation pick-ups and drop-offs, which will draw people to Southampton Village and support our downtown business district. Now that you have your first year as Mayor behind you, are there any final thoughts you would like to share? What I really want people to know is that we have a terrific board of trustees, made up of dedicated individuals who spend hours working on the complex issues that we face. It’s not always easy, but every decision that is made is done so thoughtfully and in the best interests of our Village. Are there any parting thoughts? We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful spots in the country, full of so many natural resources. We have a duty to protect those resources so that everyone can enjoy all that Southampton Village has to offer.

RACHEL’S RADAR FIVE FAVORITES IN THE HAMPTONS By Rachel Heller

1. I love to go to Sag Harbor and take the boat tour with my nephews and niece. Sag Harbor has always been a very special destination for me. In high school I used to go to the town for oatmeal cookies at Provisions market and cafe during study breaks. There are just so many cute places to pop into and explore in Sag Harbor. I remember picnics on the benches by the water. I would get seafood at the wharf and share my leftovers with the graceful swans that glide over the water and even feed the ducks.

2. I love shopping for summer dresses at Kyle | Alene Too in Southampton. The staff is so welcoming. The staff gets to know their clients on a personal level and helps find them dresses that are perfect for their taste and body shape. It is rare that a store keeps close tabs on their clients and helps them select items that are most suitable for their style. When the store has a certain brand I like, such as LoveShackFancy, the store holds my size for me, and they are never pushy. They get to know their shoppers on a personal level, making it fun to stop in even when not shopping. When a certain brand that they know their customer likes arrives at the store, they reach out with a notification.

3. I like to make picnics on Coopers Beach in Southampton, which has been recognized as one of the best beaches in the United States. I just station myself with a good book in a cozy spot overlooking the ocean. I love to read non-fiction books and discover new things all the time. I am constantly trying to challenge myself, if not, I get bored. I am currently reading Inspired: Pursuit of Progress, by Kelly Clark, the Olympic snowboarder. I was a competitive dressage rider and fencer and so I love to read about the culture of other sports, especially about the Olympics. Because Kelly was able to pursue her passion and be great, I welcome her insight on how to improve. She inspires me. She says that you should surround yourself with successful people and be part of a winning team. Kelly explains SocialLifeMagazine.com

how the lens creates an entire picture. She builds on the foundation of belief and lends the reader insight on how to be the catalyst for his or her own life.

4. Take a coffee break and get an ice cream sandwich at Tate’s in Southampton. The sweet aroma inside reminds me of my grandma baking in her kitchen. It’s so wonderful to inhale the many aromas of the Hamptons from the kitchen at my summer home, especially my mom cooking for the family or house guests. They say that each day has a color and a smell. My memories transport me to another place and time through the aromas and visions of the yellow sun beating on the blue ocean waves that bring me back to my childhood. I would spend countless hours in the kitchen with my sister and sometimes brother, as our mother taught us her mother’s secret recipes.

5. Nova’s Ark Project in Water Mill because I love art and culture. Culture to me is of utmost importance. Without art and culture I feel a void. This year I spent ample time in California and London, where I saw amazing Kusama mirrored rooms. In London I explored the Gagosian gallery and got a private tour of the George Condo auction. Condo is my favorite living artist and a dear friend. I grew up with a brother who collects art and introduced me to cool emerging artists, but I also had learned about classical artists. I had the chance to be the muse in a group shoot with Peter Beard, I still have a piece that Lola Schnabel made for me that I dug up at my old apartment. It was of me photographed at the train station in New York. Nathan Hawthorne once said, “Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind.” Art allows me to relate to myself by first exploring and then creating my own vision instead of being told how to “look” or “be.” It is one form that just allows with no rules and regulations.

MARK BARON & JANE BABCOOK THE HAMPTONS DYNAMIC DUO By Barbara Gordon

I

n the high-stakes world of Hamptons real estate, people tend to go it alone. The conventional wisdom is that to get ahead, to provide a white glove touch, and to ensure consistent service, there’s nothing like the personal attention of a single agent or broker. Just about everything has the multiconnotation word “exclusive” attached to it. So, it garnered attention early last year when Mark Baron and Jane Babcook, of Brown Harris Stevens, announced they would be taking a partnership approach. “The type of concierge service our customers demand and deserve is above and beyond the conventional agent–client relationship that clients have too often become used to,” said Mark Baron, a local real estate legend. “We find that the more knowledge you bring to the experience, the more successful the transaction will be.” He was right, and as Baron and Babcook emerge into the 2018 season with more than $100 million in exclusive listings under their belts, a new network that promises to expand their influence to other luxury markets in the US, and a shared sense of what will leave an indelible mark on the experience of their customers, they are feeling exceptionally good. “The bottom line is that the partnership between Mark and me is successful and only getting stronger. We are totally performance-driven and performance-based, and it’s something that we’re very proud of,” said Babcook. “Not only are we doing a lot as buyers’ brokers, and finding greater opportunities for value in this market with already a lot of closings this year, but, in addition, we’ve grown our listing side of the business in excess of a $100 million.” According to Babcook and Baron, they’ve been able to do so in such a short period of time because they offer a white glove approach to their clients that not only gets results, but also gets high marks for satisfaction from the process.

This activity has made them industry leaders and placed them squarely at the front of the pack in terms of marketing, including social media. Chances are you’ve seen “Hamptons Luxury Agents,” their team moniker, and one that truly represents their partnership. “We are now being approached by multiple agents throughout the Brown Harris Stevens network to join our team so that we can offer clients the best referral base no matter where they are purchasing their home on the East Coast,” says Baron, pointing out hot spots like Miami, Palm Beach, the Hamptons, and New York City. The pair has established strong connections, particularly in New York and Florida, that will expand their reach and create even more value for their clients by putting their listings front and center in some of the most affluent markets, including Europe. Brown Harris Stevens is one of the country’s oldest and most reputable residential brokerage firms, with over 350 full-time brokers in the New York City area, over 100 brokers in Palm Beach, and 125 brokers in Miami. Today, this venerable agency has adopted a brand new look and approach to its own marketing and is well worth a look. “We love it!” says Babcook. “It’s fresh, contemporary, bold, honest, and smart. It truly aligns with our approach as ‘Hamptons Luxury Agents,’ which is to be current and effective, and is why our personal brand has become so strong and so lifestyle-driven.” So, what’s driving the market this summer? Baron has some very specific thoughts. “I think there’s still a real sweet spot between properties listed from $2.5 to $6 million and that new construction is still very much king,” he says. “People are still very much value-driven and looking for quality.” That being said, Baron and Babcook are known for their one-of-a-kind listings, ultra prestigious properties that can’t be

found anywhere else. Among them is Sag Harbor’s 238 Main Street and 43 Suffolk Street. “These are extraordinary properties and don’t adhere to the normal pricing principles, but are still getting great response,” says Baron. Despite all the success, one thing that also sets apart Baron and Babcook is their down-to-earth approach — they are genuinely excited to get back into the swing of summer and, in particular, to partake in the activities that really give them their fuel. For instance, Babcook, who is well known for her connections in the equestrian world, is also an avid cook and boater. Her love of the water is the perfect downtime to explore the scenic beauty of the area, whether fishing, sailing, clamming, or paddle-boarding. Baron is also most at home on the water. He claims that the Caribbean is second only to the Hamptons: His favorite pastime in the off-season is cruising through warm waters. food. “Right now I’m spending a lot of time on my new motor yacht, which makes me exceptionally happy,” says Baron. “And, as for our clients, they’ve had a good year on Wall Street and have continued to grow their portfolios. I expect that they are sharing the same enthusiasm for the summer that I am!”

SOLID AS A ROCK By Jacob Puck

T

he last time we caught up with Raymond Labarbera, he was making a name for himself in the Hamptons luxury home construction space, having spent a couple of years building a killer manse. “It was on a lark,” says Labarbera, “But it was really exciting to branch out, fine-tune some skills, and gain an even deeper appreciation for all the elements that go into the details of finer living.” What Labarbera discovered — or, in this case, rediscovered — is his special love for a craft that spans multiple generations in his family: masonry and stonework. A key part of this new direction was his collaboration with the renowned Joaquin Mera, a familiar name in the Hamptons to those who have sought a true craftsman for their stonework. Mera, who has personally been in the business for 20 years, also comes from a long lineage of masons. In a recent conversation with us, Labarbera discussed his new collaboration with Mera Masonry and Stone, and what’s hot in the masonry world among the finest homes in the Hamptons. Many people may not know that your background is in masonry. That’s true. But, this is in my blood, and this is where I really got started. Custom masonry is huge in the Hamptons. Why is it essential as part of the overall aesthetic of a construction or renovation? Everything is in the details, and everything leads to the outdoors in the Hamptons. If you’re in the Hamptons, and it’s summer, you gravitate to your outdoor living space. People talk a lot about fixtures and appliances and ceiling pitches, but the truth is, you and your guests will spend most of your time in the area that matters most: your outdoor living space. Why do custom? Because it’s art. Think about it: there’s nothing more exotic and elemental than taking stone and refining it to your exact

Joaquin Mera and Raymond Labarbera

specifications. You can’t buy that in any store. I like to think of us as the old generation of craftsmen. Pull on that thread for us a little bit. Let’s say you want to do an outdoor fireplace. You can go to a lot of companies and get a prefab and put it together like a puzzle. That’s fine, but there’s nothing special about it, and you’ll see the same thing all over the place. Years ago, that didn’t happen. It was all built by hand, was one-of-a-kind, and stood the test of time. My work is built by hand and will stand the test of time. So, this really is an extension of the quality and character that home owners are investing in their indoor space. It’s no longer an afterthought. Correct. People are realizing that they want something that’s breathtaking, not blah. And, custom can last a lifetime. This really is in your blood, isn’t it? It is. My grandfather was a mason, and my father and I grew up in the concrete business. Rock is in our blood!

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL . . . WHAT A FABULOUS VANITY! JAMES MARTIN VANITIES REFLECT WORKS OF ART By Blaire Bass

W

e all know the bathroom is way more than just a functional service center. It’s a place of refuge, quiet time from the kids or partners, reflection, and beautification. A fabulous bathroom is like a girl’s best friend (guys, you too). For me, on summer days and evenings, it’s a mini palace to relax and refresh and doll-up for a fun night out in the Hamptons. Whether you are thinking of your powder room, master bath, or ensuite, we’ve got the designer for you. Bathroom vanities are not only important for necessary function and storage; they are the centerpieces of the bathroom. An interior designer friend of mine introduced me to James Martin Vanities while renovating a house in Southampton. A favorite name in interior design, the company has over 100 years of combined furniture experience. In addition to the amazing options in the catalogue, the company’s design philosophy resonated with me: they build bathroom cabinets using the same uncompromising techniques, standards, and quality that can be found in fine furniture SocialLifeMagazine.com

pieces. “We believe that by incorporating the look of fine furniture into your bathroom, we are able to transform your bathroom into a private oasis and a magnificent accent in your home — one that people comment on when they visit,” explained Leslie Eastwood, the marketing manager at James Martin Vanities. The company offers over 300 different vanity cabinets and over 2,000 combinations with interchangeable marble, granite, and solid-surface top options. The more popular collections are the Brittany, the Brookfield, and the Bristol. And right now, wall-mounted or floating vanities are a hot ticket item. Designers’ favorites, the Bel Air and Beverly series are throwbacks to the glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age. These pieces boast stainless steel and chrome finishes and a lacquer mirror. How gorgeous! Take a look at some of my favorites at the top of this article. James Martin Vanities jamesmartinvanities.com

HAMPTONS POWER BROKERS THE WINES TEAM AT SAUNDERS & ASSOCIATES By Blaire Bass

Penthouse at Harbor’s Edge (Top) Harbor’s Edge

I

t’s “all in the family” with the Wines Team at Saunders & Associates in Southampton. Participating in the recent sales of numerous large development projects on the East End, it is no surprise that this dynamic team is ranked in the top one percent of real estate agents in United States. John, Bill, and Marina Wines bring a unique combination of qualities and competencies to each and every real estate transaction they handle. John’s background in the construction industry and real estate finance is complemented by the analytical skills of his son Bill, who has an MBA from Boston College. They understand that acquiring or selling real estate — commercial or residential — is a financial transaction and, accordingly, strive to provide their clients with sound advice. Meanwhile, Marina, Bill’s wife, offers a personal approach and creative flair that perfectly balances the more business-minded styles of John and Bill. Equally as important, the Wines Team knows the ins and outs of the communities and markets that make up eastern Long Island. That’s because John and Bill were born and raised on the South Fork. In fact, the Wines family settled on the East End in the 1640s, assisted in the formation of Southampton Village in the 1890s, helped establish the Peconic Land Trust in the 1980s, and continue today to protect the quality of life in the Hamptons. At the same time, Marina, who hails from Germany, rounds out the team by providing a fresh international perspective to the mix. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Like any other industry, managing real estate transactions in the Hamptons can be a tough business; however, the Wines Team firmly believes that honesty, integrity, and professionalism are important keys to success. As a result, they were recently ranked number 15 in the nation by Real Trends and the Wall Street Journal for average sales price. What’s more, the Wines Team also represented one of the largest Hamptons sales and ranked as a top producing team in New York State for total sales volume. Currently, the Wines Team is spearheading sales for a brand-new luxury condominium complex in Sag Harbor. Harbor’s Edge features fifteen meticulously designed residences with spectacular sunset and water views. Even for the Hamptons, this level of direct harbor-front access is a rarity. Other property amenities include a limestone sundeck with 50-foot lap pool, lounge, and wet bar. To learn more about these stunning units, visit harborsedge.com. THE HAMPTONS POOL AN EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL OASIS By Thomas Day Lee

Sweet dreams are made of this: Stuart Andrews recommends pools as balms for the soul, such as the soothing sounds of serenity provided by the waterfall in the infinity-edge pool above or a serene, secluded “garden pool” seen at right.

T

he quintessential Hamptons summer lifestyle is outdoor living with a focus, for many, on poolside living. The pool and the area around it are used as “outdoor rooms,” the seamless flow between interior and exterior. If you’re considering designing and building a pool or renovating an older existing pool, you’ve got a daunting project ahead. With that in mind, Social Life sought out an expert to bring us up to speed on what’s involved in creating a special pool. We asked Stuart Andrews, the owner of Shinnecock Pools in Southampton, for his take on what makes a great pool and what he sees as his client’s chief concerns. Andrews — who has been building and caring for luxury pools in the Hamptons for more than 20 years — was forthright and even philosophical. “For many of my clients, building an amazing pool is often how they want to proclaim their success. If you’re a corporate CEO, work on Wall Street, or are in charge of a hedge fund,

you spend your days creating something that’s invisible and intangible to most people, and no one can see what you’ve made,” says Andrews. “For many successful people, creating an amazing pool is a metaphor for what they’ve achieved. And they truly are works of art. A lot of people choose to express themselves through the artistry of a pool.” Andrews, who has built and maintains some of the most dazzling pools on the East End, humbly offers that he is more of a facilitator than anything else. “My job is to listen and listen carefully to their ideas and hopes and then bring my client’s vision to reality. And that reality reveals their personal passions intensely. No two of my pools are the same; they’re like snowflakes!” he added. Even though he’s built pools costing seven figures, he prefers to focus on the intangible when discussing them, “I like to quote the author Joan Didion, who wrote; ‘A pool... is a symbol not of affluence but of order, of control over Social Life

the uncontrollable. A pool is water, made available and useful and is, as such, infinitely soothing...’ Isn’t that wonderfully put? Think about it. Water is the essence of life. Your pool offers so much. Quality time with your kids. Or imagine that skinny-dipping moment when you’re alone with your partner, late at night. It’s connecting your soul and body in a basic element, water. When immersed at the perfect temperature, with low-level lighting on a starry night, you achieve a Zen state of mind,” says Andrews. “Having a pool can be critical to your well-being,” he insists. “It’s not always about getting into your pool but knowing that it’s there for you at any time, that you can look forward to that moment after a hard day at work, to have time to yourself to be at peace, surrounded by the liquid perfection that exists in your backyard. It’s a source of calm, comfort and belonging,” he adds. That’s never more true than on a Friday afternoon SocialLifeMagazine.com

when harried New Yorkers are chomping at the bit to get out of the city, away from their office and out to the Hamptons. “Many times the very first thing they do when they get to their house is to get out of their clothes and into their pool,” says Andrews. “And my job is to ensure that their experience, that split second of relief, is absolutely perfect. However, for people to drift into a meditative state when they get into their pool, everything must be flawless. The tile must be immaculate. The water condition must be just right. The temperature must be perfect,” he cautions. “That’s where I come in. That’s my job and frankly, my passion,” he emphasizes. Stuart Andrews is indeed the caretaker of the oasis.

THE RESIDENCES AT PRINCE FIT FOR A KING By Mack E. Valley

T

here was a time, not too long ago, when Gotham homebuyers were opting for impossibly super-sleek modern, often eschewing the vibrant history of some of the world’s most iconic addresses for an overabundance of steel and glass. According to most trendsetters, provenance is back in vogue . . . and in a big way. Case in point, the Residences at Prince. Many Manhattan residences are described as “unique.” None deserve the designation more than The Residences at Prince — truly a landmark redefined. After originally being purposed as a Roman Catholic orphanage, it became St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral School, in 1931, attended by luminaries like Martin Scorsese. Declared a city landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, in 1966, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Residences at Prince feature the building’s original façade, in addition to several other historic details. Behind the walls, the residences stun. A singular blend of historic and contemporary design, The Residences at Prince were appointed by Marvel Architects, who expertly contrast the Federal style exterior with an exuberant and elegant design within — bringing light and air to the inside, while creating private outdoor space for the residences. While history reigns supreme in this one-of-a-kind opportunity, there’s no need to be lulled too deeply into a bygone era. The nine expansive residences — seven condominiums and two townhouses — enjoy a wealth of high-quality, in-unit features and accents, including Crestron heating and cooling controls, Gaggenau refrigeration, wine storage, oak flooring, and well-appointed master bath-

rooms equipped with steam showers, marble mosaic flooring, and Waterworks fixtures/accessories. Many units also come complete with freestanding sculptural tubs, private outdoor space, and fireplaces throughout. A mix of simplex, duplex, and triplex residences range in size from 2,616 square feet to 4,778 square feet, while the five-floor townhouse spans 8,069 square feet (including an additional 1,613 square feet of cellar space). The amenities for the building include a fitness area with stateof-the-art equipment and a private yoga room, climate-controlled wine cellar, private storage, bicycle storage, package room, drycleaning storage, and attended lobby. Located at the intersection of several popular Lower Manhattan neighborhoods, NoLIta (“North of Little Italy”) comprises 16 square blocks, bounded by East Houston Street to the north, Kenmare Street to the south, Bowery Street to the east, and Lafayette Street to the west. Boasting an unparalleled proximity to a variety of local cultural destinations, noted eateries such as Balthazar and Emporio, as well as high-end retailers such as Neiman Marcus, and designer boutiques such as Balenciaga and Charlotte Ronson, NoLIta maintains its position as one of Downtown’s most coveted neighborhoods. The Residences at Prince were developed by Time Equities Inc. and Hamlin Ventures. Javier Lattanzio, Time Equities, Inc. jlattanzio@princeatmott.com, 917.670.2268 Social Life

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT CHARLES PAVARINI By Sarah Parker Young

C

harles Pavarini III’s exceptional design sensibility is rooted in the legacy of his grandfather who created historic landmarks such as the Seagram Tower, the United Nations headquarters, and the State Theater at Lincoln Center. Well known for his European flavor, this talented designer melds contemporary design with classical principles to create exquisite interiors. Additionally, his extensive experience as a costume and set designer allows Pavarini to conceive of spaces of any scale and proportion. This unique ability imbues his projects with a refined sense of drama. Pavarini has participated in the prestigious Kips Bay Decorator Show House event on numerous occasions, including the current one where he has designed an eco-chic wellness indoor/outdoor retreat. His work in showhouses has been featured nationwide in the Washington Post, the Daily News, the New York Times, and many others. The interview below covers this exceptional designer’s design style and the interior decoration of this Southampton home. How do you enhance the flow from the interior to the landscape with a beach house? My vision for a home always passes through the windows to the exterior. The general design sensibility (whether traditional or contemporary, more or less chromatic, formal or informal) permeates my vision for the home and its property as a whole, should I have command of both interior and exterior, as I did on this project. Like a photographer sees through a lens, I look through the windows. The feeling from inside the Social Life

home looking out to the property should meld. I often choose similar shapes, colors, and styles of furnishings inside and out, and I make choices about their placement judiciously so that a similar experience continues from inside to outside. I even work with the landscapers to create focal points for trees and shrubs as well as jardinieres and gates, etc. to create definite focal points visible from within the home. This method enhances the flow of design from the interior to the landscape and results in a more cohesive and complete experience for the people living in the home. What is your favorite room in the home? Certainly the dining room is my favorite room in the home! Given my Italian heritage, dining may be the key element in a successful home as it bonds the guests and gives great pleasure and forum for conversation and intellectual bonding. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity to collect beautiful tableware, linens, candlesticks and stunning centerpieces. What’s more heartwarming than a beautifully set and decorated dining table seated with friends and family looking forward to a special dining experience. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Can you tell us a little about the stunning chandelier in the dining room? I flipped when I came across that stunning cobalt Murano chandelier at Lorin Marsh! While its color is its most striking quality, the curls, rings, and teardrops give it a whimsical, fanciful look without it feeling heavy and formal. It made for an absolutely perfect contrast to the salmon-colored walls and also set the tone for the selections of china and crystal. The combination of blue and coral tones is striking, what appealed to you about this palette? I envisioned a highly chromatic scheme with high-contrast given the house would only be occupied in the summer months. Coral tones were necessary given the theme ‘beach house’ I was developing in my mind, and deep blues presented the perfect contrast for the custom coral tone I had mixed for the walls. Given the highly-saturated tones on opposite sides of the color wheel, the result was an extremely uplifting environment that created a sunny feeling even on cloudy days! Social Life

How do you make design successful with a mix of antiques and more modern pieces? It all comes down to shapes. Whether traditional or contemporary, new or antique, the shapes need to relate. Given the client’s predilection for traditional French style, I mixed new and old pieces having curvilinear forms. Then I began designing upholstered furniture and custom linen-wrapped tables that carried the same lines of the antiques. With that, I pulled together a harmonious yet eclectic mix of new and old with consistency in form. Whose dog is sitting on the bench? That’s my best friend, Fred Astaire. He travels with me everywhere! I rescued Fred for my mom, who shared the final years of her life in his company. Upon her passing, he became my right-hand man and mascot. They all are curators of the best of antique, vintage, and new furnishings of the upmost style and quality. Furthermore, their leadership and reputations speak for themselves. QUEEN MARY 2 CRUISING AUSTRALIA By Joe Alexander

Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theater, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City, and currently resides in Manhattan and Southampton.

SYDNEY TO SYDNEY If you want to explore Australia and experience both the cultural and natural wonders of this enormous country (and smallest continent), the Queen Mary 2 is absolutely the way to do it. During this year’s “World Voyage” the QM2 cruised into eight ports from Sydney to Perth, including Melbourne, Brisbane,

Adelaide, Margaret River, Whitsunday Island, and Kangaroo Island. What’s exciting about the Queen’s annual adventure is that, with a little planning, you can join the ship almost anywhere in the world and see your choice of countries and cities. We chose a ten day, roundtrip, Sydney to Sydney cruise.

ROYALTY, VIPS & MOVIE STARS

MAJESTY OF THE HIGH SEAS

Queen Mary 2 is the flagship of the Cunard Line and she is, without exception, the most luxurious passenger ship ever built. In 2004, Queen Elizabeth II christened this floating palace named after her grandmother. The queen proclaimed, “I name this ship Queen Mary 2. May God bless her and all who sail on her.” Countless VIPs have been welcomed on board during the QM2’s 14 years at sea, including Presidents Donald Trump and George H. W. Bush, French President Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Hollywood luminaries Uma Thurman, George Lucas, Lenny Kravitz, Ed Sheeran, and Helen Mirren. The latter won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the movie The Queen and inscribed a painting of Her Majesty in the ship’s casino, “From one Queen to another.”

Cunard launched the original Queen Mary in 1934, and it was considered the grand dame of ships, carrying Hollywood royalty such as Marlene Dietrich , Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, and Clark Gable during the heyday of transatlantic ocean travel. The glamour and allure of cruising in true luxury lives on in her successor. In fact, today this bastion of seagoing extravagance is glossier than ever, after undergoing an extensive $132 million stem-to-stern refurbishment in 2016. Deluxe cabins were added, and furnishings were replaced throughout the ship. Cunard even created the hashtag #qm2remastered. The ship famously allows pets on board, employing a kennel master to mind dogs and cats, and they didn’t forget Fido and Fifi in the QM2 renovation, adding more kennels as well as a kennel lounge where owners can hang out with their furry friends.

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN Recently, Aussie star Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Zac Efron, and Zendaya celebrated the premiere of their movie, The Greatest Showman, with a dinner dance on the ship in New York City and everyone on board joined the party.

BOOK A POSH GRILL SUITE The QM2 has multiple sailing options, with a category for everyone. That said, the two top choices are the Queens Grill and Princess Grill Suites. These staterooms are the ultimate in luxury — seating and dining areas, walk-in closets, and spacious private balconies with deck chairs to lounge in. Queens Grill guests even have their own personal butler. The service is unparalleled: we had an attentive butler, tour director, and concierge that finessed our every wish. They also made getting on and off the ship a breeze. Everything is so impeccable, you might want to consider staying on forever. DOWN UNDER It’s a loooong flight to Sydney, a total of 22 hours in the air, with a stop in L.A. Do yourself a favor and splash out for first class seats with a flatbed. We stayed at the Park Hyatt because of its location on Sydney Harbor. Be sure to reserve a room with a terrace overlooking the Sydney Opera House, which is the city’s major contribution to international architecture and art. This is the city’s top hotel, where all the stars stay, among them Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Kate Hudson (who was there when I was). Elton John stays so frequently he keeps his own piano there. The Hyatt’s bar and restaurant all have terrific harbor views. The chef is Etienne Karner, who trained in Michelinstar kitchens in France before landing in Sydney. Order the sumptuous tasting dinner that includes the signature dish: kangaroo tartar with quail egg, truffle mayo, radish, and sesame crisps. This goes beautifully with a 2016 Hans Herzog Pinot Gris or a glass of Champagne. hyatt.com Spend a day or two seeing Sydney before boarding the QM2. THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE Our balcony at the Hyatt overlooked the Opera House, which is arguably the eighth wonder of the world. We got up early to see the dawn break over the landmark, an unforgettable moment, and we promptly had Jonathan, the hotel’s prizewinning concierge, book a tour to see inside.

DANISH ARCHITECT Jørn Utzon, an unknown Danish architect, designed the building in 1955, winning an international design competition. Weirdly, Utzen’s world-famous sculptural design was initially rejected by the judges, but finally the renowned architect Eero Saarinen convinced the panel to choose it. Construction began in 1959, but wasn’t completed until 1973, thanks to a string of snafus, including cost overruns; the final construction costs totaled $79 million. In 1966, payment problems forced Utzon to resign from the project, and he left Australia and never saw his completed masterpiece.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE Queen Elizabeth II opened the Sydney Opera House, and during the ceremony she awarded Utzen the Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of Architects Australia, but he was not present to receive it. However, there was finally détente in the 1990s, when Opera House officials reached out, and Utzen again signed on as design consultant. He passed away in 2008, a year after it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Despite its name, the Opera House has multiple purposes and presents many types of performance in addition to opera, including symphonic and popular music, and classic and experimental theater. SYDNEY HARBOUR & BRIDGE In the morning, we hired a speedboat to take us around Sydney Harbor, which is the center of life in Australia’s biggest city. We kept an eye out for native daughter Cate Blanchett, who has been known to pilot a small skiff around the harbor. Alas, we didn’t see her. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, affectionately known as “The Coat Hanger” thanks to its arched design, is another memorable icon of the city. Opened in 1932, the bridge took eight years to complete. High-wire artist Philippe Petit crossed the bridge on a tightrope in 1973, but you can legally cross the bridge on foot via a pedestrian walkway. It’s an easy stroll of about 30 minutes, with magnificent views. You can also ride a bicycle across. Those more adventurous — and not afraid of heights — can scale the top of the bridge on a guided “bridge climb.” bridgeclimb.com

BONDI BEACH, ICEBERGS CLUB Bondi Beach is one of Sydney’s top sights, and the most popular of the many stretches of golden sand rimming this sunny city. It’s only a few miles from the center of town, and easily accessible. Here you might see Justin Beiber, Liev Schreiber, or Naomi Watts body surfing. Our driver dropped us off at the end of the cliff-top coastal walk, a spectacularly scenic route that we strolled until we found Icebergs, Bondi’s top beach club. The place has killer views of the crescent-shaped beach and endless blue water. You can check into the club to use the facilities, including the Olympic size saltwater pool. The restaurant is usually totally booked, but we snagged a table in the bar; we didn’t have a white tablecloth as do tables in the main dining room, but the burger was juicy, and the views were just as fabulous.

BOARDING THE QM2 — TIMING COUNTS The QM2 had dramatically moored in front of our balcony at the Hyatt; looking out at the ship and the Opera House, two giant landmarks on Sydney’s famous harbor was a rare privilege. Time to pack and board! The QM2 runs like a Swiss clock so we were able to check in effortlessly and seamlessly. Be smart and check ahead to find out when guests will finish disembarking and boarding from early flights. This is usually between 9:30 am and 2 pm. Presto smooth boarding at 3 pm allowed plenty of time to explore the ship before she sailed at 9:30 pm. Uniformed

porters brought the luggage to our stateroom, which had another perfect view of the Opera House. It doesn’t get old.

EXPLORING THE QM2 The staff unpacked us while we explored the ship, which has a Canyon Ranch Spa Club, a gigantic movie theater that plays current blockbusters, the only planetarium at sea, a Vegas-styled showroom that features elaborate musicals, multiple gourmet restaurants, tea rooms, a Champagne bar, a ballroom with a 12-piece orchestra, a disco, a gym with a killer view of the horizon, five outdoor and indoor swimming pools, seven Jacuzzis. There are also games galore, including shuffle board, ping pong, paddle tennis, backgammon, bingo, bridge, and way too many other activities to list here. Additionally, the QM2 boasts the largest library at sea, with breathtaking ocean panoramas; an hourly schedule of things to do, including lectures by famous authors, actors, and scientists; classical concerts; piano and harp recitals; a long list of fitness classes, including yoga, stretch, and circuit training; and gambling in a fully equipped casino. Daily laps around the deck (three times equals one mile), leisurely naps in a deckchair under a colorful plaid wool blanket from Scotland, and a nightcap in the Commodore Club were just a few of things to look forward to.

“sails” of the Opera House. Sailing out of Sydney Harbor past the Opera House on the QM2 is one of the most memorable visual experiences you will ever have, akin to watching the mist lift to reveal the Taj Mahal from the presidential suite at the Oberoi Amarvillas in Agra, or seeing the Pyramids for the first time. With the stars and moon lighting the way, tiny tug boats guided us out of the harbor. As the ship rounded the Opera House, the “sails” seemed to blow in the wind, and with lights ablaze it was a sight to behold and treasure forever. It’s Australia’s Eiffel Tower, London’s Big Ben, and New York’s Empire State Building. You need to experience this.

AT SEA In honor of our first night at sea, Captain Peter Philpott invited us to a cocktail party to meet the ship’s officers. This was also the first of four formal nights, so don’t forget to bring your jewels as this black-tie ritual is very much alive on the QM2. We quizzed the captain about what we could expect to see in New Zealand, our ultimate destination. I can’t wait to tell you all about it, next time.

HÔTEL PLAZA ATHÉNÉE A CELESTIAL EXPERIENCE By Anthony Michael

Le Salon Haute Couture

“When you get into a hotel room, you lock the door, and you know there is a secrecy, there is a luxury, there is fantasy.” — Diane von Fürstenberg

I

f the former princess’s words were inspired, I’d bet that she was relaxing at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée, in Paris. Few hotels are as storied as Athénée, one of an exclusive eight designated “palace” hotels in Paris. This makes it is so exclusive, it’s technically deserving of a sixth star. The signature red accents throughout. The collaborations with Alain Ducasse and Christian Dior. The location, with stunning views of the Eiffel Tower. The fragrance of fresh cut flowers or bath amenities by Guerlain. The lobby walls covered with photos of the most celebrated guests from the past century. The flawless service from curbside to bedside. These are just a handful of elements that push Hotel Plaza Athénée to the top of anyone’s short list, and, once there, it is never replaced. This year, celebrating its 105th birthday in the City of Light, Le Plaza Athénée immediately established itself in 1913 as a Parisian icon, situated among the chic haute couture of the fabled avenue Montaigne. In 1947, Christian Dior set up his couture house right next door, and in recent years, established the Dior Institut within the hotel. Needless to say, wellness and beauty are achieved at a stratospheric level in the highclass subterranean spa. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

The property is unmistakable. Red canvas awnings fly over every window and red geraniums are displayed in window boxes on the façade along avenue Montaigne. In the distance, the Eiffel Tower glints in the sun, and establishes a dramatic backdrop at night. Curbside, you are greeted by a concierge team who exude the French art of welcoming, and who are able to produce whatever you may need, including a reservation at an impossible-to-book restaurant or a growing number of exceptional craft cocktail bars. Although it’s entirely likely you may not want to leave the premises for your sustenance. Six options are available to guests and visitors, and each radiates its own personality. The eponymous Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée is as over the top as it sounds, with a trifecta of flavor, atmosphere, and price. Touting a “free and nearly instinctive interpretation of haute cuisine,” this restaurant delivers in every way. First, you’ll feel like you are in a completely alternate dimension with the stupendous other-worldly design — think Barbarella meets Louis XIV in the dining area featuring chrome-style banquettes and crystal drop chandeliers. A chic and classic Parisian brasserie that has been attracting the beau monde since 1936, Le Relais is helmed by Chef Philippe Marc, who ceaselessly maintains not only relevance in this grande dame, but also excellence. There’s a good chance you’ll see a celeb or two at a nearby table. Le Bar has been an “it” spot for well-heeled trendsetters for years, and has earned its salt on the coveted list of top 50 bars in the world. Creative cocktails and smooth grooves

The restaurants are reasons enough to visit Hotel Plaza Athénée, but the experience is truly far from complete unless you stay. At “palace” level, your expectations should be high, and they will be more than met. Each and every room is spacious, with exceptionally appointed fabrics, both classic and modern furnishings, and unique art. You’ll want to opt for a Junior Suite. This is the type of room you see in movies and always look forward to experiencing in person. Spacious Parisian-apartment-style living spills into a bedroom designed for hyper relaxation. EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN IN ATHENS By Anthony Michael

Lobby

O

ver the millennia, Athens has become known for many things: the cradle of Western civilization, the Acropolis, ouzo, and as an airport stopover en route to the much more exotic Greek Isles. It traditionally has not been regarded as a luxury destination — until now. During the past ten years, and despite struggles with severe national debt, Athens has emerged as an international mustvisit city, with some of the best restaurants, bars, and sightseeing the Mediterranean has to offer. Luckily, hotels have followed suit, with no shortage of luxury options. A small handful of old grande dames will likely tempt the uninitiated, but to truly enjoy Athens and be at the center of the action, it’s best to opt for one of an emerging boutique selection that dot the city.

Case in point is the Yes! Hotels portfolio of small but distinctive boutiques, with the NEW Hotel leading the pack. Affiliated with the Starwood brand, NEW Hotel takes hospitality seriously, and backs up its services with an extraordinary aesthetic. Located just a couple of blocks from the Plaka, the Acropolis, and the city’s other hotels, restaurants, and bars (do not miss The Clumsies, a top 50 in the world), the modernist NEW Hotel is perfectly situated near Syntagma Square (where you’ll also want to enjoy a drink and the view from the rooftop bar at Grand Bretagne). A DAY IN THE SOCIAL LIFE EAST HAMPTON 2018 By Karen Holly Berliner

leven Madison Park’s MP Summer House returns to East Hampton this season and so do we. For the second year in a row, we will dine at this pop-up restaurant; a dialed down outpost version of its flagship dining space in New York City. It has a signature-dish a la carte menu, a covered-patio dining space, picnic tables in the backyard for walk-in diners, and an inviting main dining room. We plan to reserve for dinner (exclusive to American Express card members) for this weekend. MP Summer House will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from May 25 until mid-September (341 Pantigo Road). Another special pop-up is the very popular Il Mulino, on the border of East Hampton Village. Lee Katzoff (whose family owns more than a dozen restaurants in New York City and its local suburbs, Florida, Nashville, and Las Vegas) proudly showcases a menu focusing on Il Mulino’s traditional classics, such as chicken parmigiana, branzino, and a wood-fired pizza. (108 Wainscott Stone Road, Wainscott). Given this exciting dining news, we choose East Hampton as our first stop of the season, a week before Memorial weekend. Our approach from Route 27 into East Hampton takes us

past the town’s sparkling pond, complete with swans, egrets, and ducks gently paddling about, and flanked by rows of historical inns, beautifully manicured lawns, and of course many windmills. As summer approaches, we look forward to strolls along the local stretches of white sand at Main Beach and admiring the estates of Lily Pond. Before settling in for the weekend, we note a few town events coming up. For one, the 2018 Golf Outing at Maidstone Club on Thursday, June 7. This is an all-day affair of lunch, golf, dinner, and awards. Hikers and the historically curious will enjoy the Ghost Town Trail, a three-mile self-guided walking tour that loops around the abandoned Northwest Settlement in East Hampton, maintained by the East Hampton Trails Preservation. We start our afternoon with lunch at Babette’s, a fun restaurant where organic, local, and seasonal foods are served with a lively social vibe. We enjoy the Babette’s salad: pan crisped organic tofu, crisp herbed red potatoes, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, olives, beets, asparagus, organic greens, shaved parmesan, and lemon vinaigrette. We add a hearty chicken molé Social Life

enchilada with melted white cheddar, smooth subtly flavored chocolate molé sauce, jalapeño peppers, organic black beans and brown rice, salsa, and avocado, topped with a dollop of sour cream. We complement the meal with artisan crafted cilantro-fresh ginger martinis. After lunch, we check into the Mill House Inn, boutique destination inn that is open year-round. Graciously hosted by proprietors Sylvia and Gary Muller and their remarkable staff, this 1790 colonial house is beautifully decorated with an eclectic mix of comfortable furniture and offers many amenities, such as lavish whirlpool tubs and gas fireplaces. In the common area with beamed ceilings, classic leather sofas and copies of the New York Times make visitors feel at home. But the best part of Mill House remains its breakfast. With many tempting choices on the menu, we shared a few different dishes. The pancakes are hearty and plentiful, served with sweet maple syrup. We enjoy crispy bacon on the side. The coffee and tea are offered with great pride and expertise. You can enjoy anything from an English breakfast tea to a rich cup of French roast, brewed in a way that is unique to the inn, thanks to Jay Silhan, the in-house coffee master extraordinaire. The inn

generously offers guests sweet snacks (a variety of cookies baked in the inn’s ovens) and savory snacks (artisanal cheeses, duck salami, and select smoked meats). In the early evening, we head over to The Palm restaurant at The Huntting Inn, another historic landmark nestled in the heart of Main Street. Here we are greeted by the tempting aromas of top quality fare in the making as well as friendly staff who are eager to make our experience special and completely custom. The lobster bisque made with fresh lobster meat, cream, and sherry is velvety rich. Sweet and succulent baked clams are authentically Italian with a sprinkling of crisp garlicky breadcrumbs. The signature prime meats, like filet mignon and New York strip steak, come in two sizes. Pair your steak with a half lobster grilled to perfection, and treat yourself to a classic surf and turf meal. After dinner, we enjoy a night cocktail or two at the bar. The next day we grab in a yoga stretch at JBYoga Studio in town, which offers all yoga levels and styles and is owned and operated by Jessica Bellofatto, a yoga pioneer. We catch an all-open-level class and stretch it out. We note that on May 27, from 7 to 9:30 pm, JB offers its first full moon paddle of the season, which begins at sunset. Grab a paddle and gently make your way across the harbor as part of a group. Afterward, return to JB’s Boga Yoga floating studio, where Jessica will guide you through “moon salutations” and a sweet evening yoga practice on the boards, followed by a final meditation. After yoga, we head over to Rowdy Hall in the Parrish Mews. It’s named after a turn-of-the-nineteenth-century boardinghouse, known for the Saturday night rowdiness of its artist boarders. The current Rowdy Hall is an English pub/French bistro that features dark wood floors, ceiling beams, and (on cool nights) a roaring fireplace in its spacious dining space. The copper-topped bar is backed by a stained glass bottle rack, which by day glows with jeweled colors. We enjoy a fabulous well-selected menu thanks to Ed Lightcap, the chef. He suggests some popular choices, and we welcome this as he and his

on-point wait staff lead us through a sublime dining experience. Strains of classic rock fill the room and make for a perfect experience. Appetizers of crispy duck rolls, a deliciously smooth pâté, and a plate of classically inspired escargot are served with plenty of toasted baguettes to soak up the garlicky goodness. Next we try the “impossible burger,” a patty made from soy roots, coconut oil, and wheat protein that dares you to distinguish it from a beef burger. Classic onion rings go perfectly with the meal. The menu has been thoughtfully paired with an expansive beer and wine list as well as inventive cocktails. off the next day. Beautifully landscaped grounds dotted with century-old trees and expansive gardens surround both the Baker House 1650 and the Baker Carriage House. An honor bar offers a selection of the finest wines, liquors, and beers. The Carriage House, which contains two suites, retains architectural details reminiscent of the building’s original use, such as stable doors and a spiral staircase. The loft is an expansive suite with a king sized wooden sleigh bed, a fireplace, a surround-sound system, a separate living area with a fireplace and television, a private terrace, and a private bath with a two person masseur tub. We are truly in our glory. For dinner we crave casual seafood, so we head over to Bostwick’s Chowder House. This beachy space features a casual atmosphere with a seaside theme. Light colors, exposed wood, colorful surfboards, and beach art on the walls complete the mood. The outdoor area features tables with market umbrellas for guests to take in the summer air while enjoying fresh seafood. The Lily Pond lemonade on the rocks, with tea-infused Firefly vodka, is refreshing and whets our appetite. The seafood is a feast no matter what you choose, so we share raw clams and oysters atop ice, with plenty of accompaniments to choose from. Next we enjoy the New England clam chowder and the lobster bisque, both steamy and flavor-

ful. Baked stuffed clams and steamed mussels round out our meal. Fresh whole lobsters are always in the house, gleaming bright red and overhanging the serving platters, fresh as can be, and served with corn on the cob, coleslaw, and drawn butter. That’s a must for us! A selection of beer is available, featuring domestic and imported brews, while wine by the glass or bottle is also offered. Desserts feature key lime pie, a root beer float, and soft serve ice cream with an array of toppings. Before we leave the Hamptons, we make one last stop to Bay Kitchen. It’s right on the bay at Three Mile Harbor, just north of East Hampton and Amagansett. The proprietor is Eric Miller, an acclaimed and experienced chef. Enter and immediately take in a rich ambiance. Modern paintings on tan walls are a backdrop for white wainscoting, cherry wood floors, stretches of banquettes, and ceiling fans. We enjoy delightful courses, starting with raw bar specialties like locallysourced little neck clams. Small plates are up next, filled with charred baby octopus and heritage baby back ribs with local honey and peach salsa. Sip on a specialty cocktail like the violet Collins. Bay Kitchen has a well-curated wine list by the glass or bottle as well as draft and bottled beers. Finish with such treats as Bay Kitchen chocolate marquise with pistachio ice cream or a smooth crème brûlée, among other delights.

FOOD & WINE

SUMMER TWISTS — 2018 By Sharon Roth

W

elcome, summer 2018!! After the long winter and temporarily missing-in-action spring, we are all extra deserving this year of our beach cocktails, ideally imbibed with toes in the sand and accompanied by a dash of fiery East End sunset. So let’s go! Of course, we all have our go-to favorites, bubbly Rosé Cava for me and Provence Rosé, Aperol Spritz, and spicy mojitos as natural fail-safe crowd pleasers for most. But since it’s the beginning of a brand new season, let’s branch out and see what’s new in the glorious land of wine and spirits. First, veggies. Yes — you read that correctly. Your veggies are not just good for you, they apparently lend unique earthy flavors to traditional drinks that people are — quite literally — drinking up. In that spirit, let’s be brave and try this growingly popular concoction: (Remember to use tequilas such as Perfectomundo — one of our faves — that are 100 percent agave.) If veggies seem at all weird, let’s talk flowers! Spring flowers aren’t just lovely, they can also be deliciously mimicked in your drink. Floral components, like infused gin and hibiscus, add a ton of flavor without being overly sweet. Hibiscus in particular is a flower with intense coloring and slight tartness that pairs wonderfully with gin, rum, citrus, liqueurs, and bitters. Finally, while it’s been around for thousands of years, turmeric — the buttery golden yellow spice with a pungent flavor evocative of peppers, ginger, and India — is apparently having a moment. As an added boon, turmeric has long been championed as an anti-inflammatory with antioxidants to boot. Although to be completely straight, the scientific community has yet to fully agree. Still, it makes for added cocktail fun. And there you have it — a few new, unusual trends to kick off our season. Mix up your favorite one and let’s toast to an unforgettable — and unprecedented — summer 2018!

Hibiscus Champagne Cocktail Chilled Champagne, Prosecco, or other sparkling wine ½ to 2 teaspoons of hibiscus syrup 1 wild hibiscus flower Add flower and the desired amount of syrup to a Champagne flute. Carefully pour the Champagne so the flower blooms, and serve.

Celery Margarita

Call Me in the Morning 2 pieces chopped, unpeeled turmeric root 3 slices cucumber cilantro 1½ ounces tequila blanco — remember 100 percent agave! 1½ ounces turmeric cordial (recipe below) club soda Muddle turmeric root, cucumber, and cilantro. Add tequila and cordial, then shake and pour into a highball glass. Top with club soda. For cordial, use 1 cup white sugar, ¾ cup hot water, 3 tablespoons peeled and chopped turmeric, and 1¼ cup fresh lime juice. Steep hot water, sugar, and turmeric 24 hours (sorry — this one requires notice). Strain and add lime juice.

1½ ounces Perfectomundo tequila blanco 1 ounce celery juice 1½ tablespoons. lime 1½ teaspoons agave Combine ingredients in a tin, add ice, and shake. Strain onto fresh ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with lime wheel. Social Life

Eve Xanthopoulos always had a passion for art and completed a coveted internship at the Marian Goodman Gallery. From voraciously learning about the artists and their work to curating homes of art lovers, she proceeded to create her own company, The Xanth Group, where she privately advises and curates art for her clientele. Aside from working closely as a business manager for legendary artist Chuck Close, Eve spends her time as an author, philanthropist, art advisor, and entrepreneur. Her range of interests extend across continents and issues, including health, the arts, the environment, and children.

Tell me about how this installation came about. Was it something you thought of or were you approached by someone? No, I had never thought about doing it, although I love mosaics. The MTA came to me. I don’t know how. They have a list of artists I guess that they wanted to use. I didn’t apply for anything. Your usual medium is painting. How was it working in this different medium. Well, I love working with different mediums, that’s the fun of it all. I especially like mediums that are seen as out of fashion. Not current, not hip.

ceramic tiles. Two are self-portraits and the others include well-known figures like and Kara Walker, Cindy Sherman, Lou Reed and Philip Glass. Below is an interview with Chuck Close about his installation.

Do you feel like the mosaic is out of fashion? Yes, well I was already working with Don Farnsworth at Magnolia Editions. I’d been working with him for three years, coming up with mosaics. He did a few of them, the rest were done at Mosaica in Canada. I think that your subway portraits are so intimate — some are familiar faces, others are not so easily recognizable. Well, it’s interesting because one person that most people seem to know and who I get comments about is Lou Reed. He has a kind of fame that’s different from Phillip Glass, or Cindy Sherman, or others who are most recognizable by the general public. Social Life

I use the subway every day and it can be a little stressful and chaotic, but to have intimate portraits such as yours, well, it’s interesting to think about putting art in the subway. But there are wonderful works of art . . . I think there are something like 120 stations with works of art. Eric Fishl has a wonderful work of art. And consider the fact that they can barely keep the subways running. It’s a wonder that someone hasn’t taken a sledgehammer to them. But the money comes from something else. We aren’t taking money away from the subway system.

Do you think about when a commuter sees your intimate portrait of someone what his or her reaction will be? Well, when I’ve been down there, people are really standing and looking. I’ve seen kids down there looking at it. I think the Met was the last museum that I know of that was pay as you wish, but now there are no museums that I know of that are free. Not that the subway is free, but they’re not paying to see art while paying for their ride. And people tell me how much the art means to them. They appreciate it and ask me how I did it, etcetera. How did you narrow it down to those specific twelve portraits? Well, I wanted to make each image different, but I wanted to make the technique different each time. I tried to come up with a different approach. I’m very proud of them. What do you want people to gain out of this experience when they look at your artwork? I just want people to be engaged. There’s no one thing they should come away with. It’s extremely personal. People

connect with one image and not another. It’s sort of like the people of New York — I tried to reflect the ridership: there are old people, young people, Asians, Blacks, and I reflect that ridership. So, it’s about seeing an image and seeing someone who looks like them. So, there’s nothing I want them to come away with other than I hope they have a profound personal experience. FAIR WARNING: THE TOP FIVE AUCTION ITEMS YOU MAY SEE THIS SUMMER By Mark W. Berg

I

f you’ve ever been to the highest-profile auctions in the Hamptons, chances are you’ve had the thrill of participating in a live or silent auction with some high-stakes items. And, you probably wondered where the items came from. As you can imagine, rare memorabilia, evenings with celebrities, afternoons at the best golf clubs, and similar high-end items don’t simply materialize. “Most auctions are pretty textbook. And, if you’ve ever tried to organize an event that includes an auction, you may have had a pretty grueling experience securing quality auction items that excite guests,” says Darran Brown, the founder and CEO of Go Charity, a complete one-stop consignment-based auction management firm for all your auction needs. “What we bring to every event are unique experiences and luxury items while releasing the enormous burdens of curating, planning, and fulfilling.”

See what’s trending at Go Charity auctions.

As we enter into another exciting season of fetes and festivities, Social Life wanted to get the skinny on what are some of the hot items on the auction block this year.

AARON JUDGE AUTOGRAPHED YANKEES PHOTOGRAPH “For sports fans, you can’t get much closer to celebrity than through an autographed photo of a current player or deceased icon like Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth,” says Brown. “Autographed items, especially those of superstars like Judge, are treasures and memories that last a lifetime, provide you with a one-of-a-kind keepsake, and can often be a great conversation starter.

FERRAGAMO HANDBAGS

CASA DE CAMPO PRIVATE VILLA

“Nothing can match the quality of Italian leather, and Ferragamo really sets the standard for top-of-the-line,” says Brown. “These handbags with lustrous adornments and bold detailing tend to be coveted. In an auction setting, everyone wants to see who will walk away with the Ferragamo.”

“If you really want to have fun bidding, and secure a killer item in the process, a private home is the way the go,” says Brown. “In this case, it’s unmatched Caribbean luxury. The homes are staffed, feature private pools, stylish living areas, and any number of unique touches . . . all within a few short hours of the New York.”

CELEBRITY CHEF EXPERIENCE

TAG HEUER MEN’S & LADIES’ CARRERA WATCH

“There’s nothing more intimate and exclusive than having a chef — particularly one with street cred — prepare a delicious meal in the comfort of your own home or dining in the private room at one of the world’s top restaurants such as Per Se and meeting Thomas Keller,” says Brown. This exceptionally popular auction item provides access in a way that may never otherwise be possible.”

“It’s always important to have pure luxury brands in the room that guests recognize, and this iconic timepiece really fits the bill,” says Brown. “Those who especially hate shopping really get into the opportunity to pick up something nice for themselves and do good at the same time.” Go Charity gocharity.com Social Life

LAURENCE P. GREENBERG COMBATING SUDDEN INCOME DEFICIT SYNDROME By Dylan Trident

Laurence Greenberg leaving Family Court with NBA Player Lance Stephenson following victory in paternity/child support case.

T

he Law Firm of Laurence P. Greenberg is known to anyone in the know. Why? Because this boutique matrimonial practice frequently goes up against larger firms and has an extremely impressive track record handling New York’s most complex and heavily litigated divorce cases. However, what separates Greenberg’s firm from its competitors is that each client is treated as though they are the firm’s only client. “Rather than pawning our clients off to an army of inexperienced young associates, we take pride in the personal attention we provide to each of our clients,” says Greenberg. “The face you see at your initial consultation is the face you will see throughout the matter and at every court appearance.” This focus on individualized service also requires Attorney Greenberg to be selective as to which matters he takes on. While a typical client of the firm is a wealthy Manhattanite involved in a high-conflict divorce, Greenberg’s focus is not all about the money. “First and foremost, we use our negotiating prowess to protect the children and insulate them from the negative ramifications of a divorce.” While Greenberg is a seasoned litigator with respect to both custody and financial issues, he makes every effort to avoid custody trials and their collateral damage. Once Greenberg is satisfied that issues related to custody, decision-making, and parenting access are resolved, he has no qualms about going to war over finances if that is what required. That said, the Manhattan-based Greenberg knows that living in New York is expensive and that maintaining a high standard of living during and after a divorce may be an uphill battle, but one Greenberg and his associates are capable of winning. In two recent cases, the New York appeals court upheld decisions in which Greenberg successfully argued that the husbands’ incomes were far in excess of what they were claiming. This phenomenon, which Greenberg refers to as “sudden income deficit syndrome,” SocialLifeMagazine.com

is quite common in highstakes divorce, especially where one spouse is a stay-at-home parent. “In order to be effective, your divorce lawyer needs to understand your finances. This often requires absorbing large amounts of complex financial information quickly. As someone with a strong background in finance and accounting, I understand that tax returns often do not reflect a true financial picture,” says Greenberg. “If your standard of living is high — children enrolled in private school, owned property in Manhattan, a house in the Hamptons — it is likely your spouse earns a sufficient income to support those costs, regardless of what is reported to the taxing authorities. However, proving that level of income may be more difficult than it might appear and often involves a costly, time-consuming financial analysis.” When representing a non-monied spouse, one of the first actions that Greenberg takes is to make an immediate application to the court to not only secure monthly support but also to ensure that his client is awarded adequate funds to pay for both legal and expert fees. “Interim counsel fees are awarded to level the playing field and prevent the more affluent spouse from wearing down or financially punishing the other party,” says Greenberg. “While not every divorce case requires all out war, unfortunately in certain cases that is exactly what is required to obtain a fair result.” Regardless of whether a matter settles or goes to trial, one thing that is certain is that the attorneys of The Law Firm of Laurence P. Greenberg take pride in their work and obtain the best results for each and every client. The Law Firm of Laurence P. Greenberg lpgdivorce.com 299 Broadway 212.608.9000

HAY DAY R . COURI HAY CREATIVE PUBLIC RELATIONS By Bennett Marcus

When helping to plan events for clients like Prada, Bulgari, Escada, and Bergdorf Goodman, Hay always suggests a charitable cause be involved. When Harry Winston wanted to show off the world’s largest green diamond, Hay organized a viewing party for the wealthy patrons of the Central Park Conservancy, where Hay ensured that Winston made a donation to the Conservancy’s work. He has also handled PR events for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, the Juilliard School, Live at Lincoln Center, the Southampton Animal Shelter , and the American Ballet Theatre, to name but a few. At Audrey Gruss’s Hope for Depression Research Foundation lunch this year, the firm brought in Ashley Judd to speak just as the Harvey Weinstein scandal was unfolding. “I know

The PR firm was founded by the publicist and society columnist R. Couri Hay, who represents clients in a wide range of fields, including art, philanthropy, hospitality, food and beverage, law, medicine, beauty, jewelry, fashion, design, and event planning. “The mission of the company is to mingle luxury and philanthropy,” says Hay. The range of Hay’s clients is a composite of all of the things he is passionate about. He grew up steeped in the arts, and the firm now represents nine different art fairs, including Art Miami and Art New York. His love of grand hotels and fine food inform his work for hospitality clients, which include top chefs and food festivals such as Marcus Samuelsson and Herb Karlitz’s Harlem EatUp!; renowned caterers and event planners like Andrea Correale and Harriet Rose Katz; as well as hotels and hoteliers, including Adrian Zecher, the founder of Aman Resorts; The Plaza Athénée; The Sanctuary; The Rivington; Paper Factory Hotel; and Hay’s newest project, the $3 billion Ocean Resort Casino and its nightclub, HQ, in Atlantic City. Hay has also represented Veuve Clicquot, Krug, the 21 Club, Philippe, and Smith & Wollensky.

Hay is a fan of beauty and grooming products. Cosmetics giants Peter Thomas Roth and June Jacobs are among his clients. “I have a lot of fun putting all these different aspects of my life together, and that is how I built the firm. As a company, we are all very creative in our thinking. I think out of the box, way out of the box.” he laughs. “I also have a terrific team. I believe in the team approach; we all do it better together.”

LIFELONG PHILANTHROPY Couri Hay was brought up to give back; his mother was active in the community doing charitable work and was a friend of the Hollywood star Bette Davis. Hay says, “My mother was chairman of the American Red Cross drive in our city, and I remember helping her make fundraising folders when I was five. I still have the picture from the local paper of us stuffing envelopes.” Hay’s father was from Boston. He grew up in a family for which designer clothing was a staple — his grandmother and mother wore clothes and hats by Charles James, and his brother even wore the designer’s baby clothes. Hay went on to work as an editor for Warhol’s Interview magazine while still in college, helped start the “Chatter” column for People magazine, wrote for Town & Country, and was mentored by Aileen Mehle, who wrote the definitive society column “Suzy” for the New York Post, WWD and W. He has appeared regularly as a television commentator on PBS, The Today Show, FOX, and VH1 talking about Hollywood, society, and royalty. Hay segued to nightclubs, doing PR for parties at Studio 54, Area, and Palladium. As a partner at Tatou, he was hiring publicists SocialLifeMagazine.com

to promote the supper club before realizing that he could do it better. “I understood how to blend journalism and publicity and it worked,” he said.

BOTTOM LINE CONCEPTS PROFITABILITY AND COST REDUCTIONS ARE THE BOTTOM LINE By Michael Betts

W

hen it comes to running a business effectively, a number of buzzwords are often used: zero-waste, efficiency, sustainability, and diversity. The problem is how they become relevant for your business. How you achieve (or attempt) cost-savings can be a tricky task at the very least and usually becomes a time-soaking, company-wide initiative that falls flat. For the past ten years, Bottom Line Concepts has led North America in helping businesses increase profitability by lowering costs . . . and they do it all on a contingency. They can usually reduce expenses by 20 to 30 percent. Offering a comprehensive review of expenses plaguing every business, Bottom Line will provide an evaluation to let you know if you should be paying less for expenses like utilities, shipping, and office supplies, among 20 other categories. The report reconciles what you are paying and what you should be paying. As Bottom Line is performance-based, all fees are derivative of overall savings realized. They get a percentage of what they save you. No savings, no fees. “We define performance in two ways: by looking back in time to identify and recover refunds, and by looking forward and leveraging our buying power, technology, and innovative strategies to identify measurable cost savings,” says Josh Fox, the CEO and founder. “Our clients appreciate our model. We truly are performance-based, and the better we perform, the greater the savings for our clients. We are only compensated upon the realization of refunds and/ or savings. It’s a pure, symbiotic relationship.” The premise is that they go into organizations — regardless of the industry — run their analysis and help businesses bring their costs down. “What everyone is looking for in this economy is lower cost and better efficiency. At the end of the day, the money that we are finding for these companies makes them more profitable,” says Fox. Ben Richman, Bottom Line’s president says, “We don’t review salaries, and our strategies never consider personnel, we’re just very good at lowering costs everyone pays without changing vendors. We’ve created a process that allows you to pay less for what you have; it’s a great deal for everyone, including the vendor who gets to keep the business.”

Bottom Line operates on three core principles.

1

Zero Risk Pure contingency — they do all of the work, no cost. Bottom Line’s fees are based on a percentage of what they save for you. If no savings or refunds are realized, clients don’t owe any fees whatsoever. Any percentage of zero is zero.

Light Lift Most of the time, all they need is a copy of the previous month’s bills. Two weeks later Bottom Line delivers an itemized savings presentation for the client to examine.

3

Zero Obligation

2

No commitment. Bottom Line presents their findings and you choose to proceed or not. If you don’t like the savings opportunity or strategy, they don’t implement; all things remain as is. No fee.

Perhaps most important, Bottom Line Concepts keeps it simple. “Our process requires very little time from you or your staff,” says Richman. “Our one-time data-gather is seamless and easy. We review your bills and provide a detailed report showcasing current spends against what the lowered costs would be once our strategies are implemented. It’s up to the client if we proceed or not, but this report is very hard to say no to!” SocialLifeMagazine.com

Bottom Line Concepts is well known throughout the US and Canada. Its client range includes all sorts of industries and non-profit entities, including clients in or near the Hamptons: Town of Southampton; Southampton Hospital, Winthrop Hospital; a local Burger King franchisee; London Jewelers; Douglas Elliman; and Adelphi University. “We have been pleasantly surprised by the efficiency, professionalism, and effectiveness of the Bottom Line Concepts team,” says Russell Palmer, the director of business affairs at Adelphi University. “We look forward to continuing our prosperous relationship with the Bottom Line Concepts team for years to come.” So, how does Bottom Line Concepts measure success? “To me, it’s how much we can save a client. We usually find around 20% to 30% savings, to be conservative, and our savings have no cost, financial, or otherwise, so there is tremendous value add there for everyone. Profits rise when costs are lowered, and we lower costs with no incremental expense like having to hire someone to try to do what we do so well,” says Richman. “Companies are successful when they are able to use that money to expand, open more locations, invest in technology, improve employee benefits. These are wonderful things that really improve the experiences and lives of people,” says Fox.

ES BLOOMS IN FULL BLOOM By Lily V.A. Lee

E

lisabeth Santana is the founder of ES Blooms, a full-service floral company, designing for clients in New York City and the Hamptons. Renowned as a purveyor of unique and powerful arrangements, ES Blooms and Santana are inspiring. As Social Life and the rest of the Hamptons enters full-on flora season, we wanted to touch base with Elisabeth and learn what inspires her this season — and every day. What is your favorite travel destination and why? I would have to say Greece. It’s an extraordinary country burgeoning with natural beauty, and additionally special because I first visited with two of my sisters. I adore the depth and richness of the Greek culture combined with the pure simplicity of the food. More than a destination, it’s a state of mind: a place where I felt I could be unapologetically myself, completely alive and free. If you had to choose a destination based on what you’d see from a flora perspective, where would it be and what would you hope to see? Holland is the heart of flora-driven travel. It has a special annual flower show that basically blows every other flower show out of the water. Some of the most unique, spectacular blooms come from Holland. You told us last year that the Bird of Paradise is your favorite flower. What is your favorite color and is it reflected in your favorite flower? Yellow is my favorite color. It evokes an intrinsic feeling of grounded happiness as an extension of sunshine. I’m always filled with joy after a long NYC winter to see yellow tulips and forsythia bursting into bloom: it speaks of the promise of summer. What is the trait you most like in others? A sense of humor. In the constant hustle of entrepreneurial life in New York, what really makes a lasting impression is a person who adds levity to the mix. What do you think will be the biggest floral trends of the summer? The spring/summer 2018 shows definitely saw a boom in the use of florals. We’ve seen ’70s-inspired bold prints on the runways, Coachella floral headpieces, flower-embroidered shoes. It feels fun and young.

Our events have had a very interesting season driven by the ideal of bespoke creativity. Corporations and fashion design houses love our pop-up-style floral bars. We choose several varieties of flowers based on the season and the brand’s aesthetic, and throughout the event the guests choose the flowers that speak to them. Our talented team of designers work one-on-one with each guest to arrange their flowers in unique combinations for the guest to take home. It’s an interactive experience that everyone gets really hyped about. What trends are on the way out, and what’s coming in? Flower walls are certainly still popular, but we’ve seen a lot Social Life

of buzz recently about moon gates, which signify unity and oneness. The circle evokes a sense of being complete. We’ve seen people use it for weddings, and we’ve been very successful bringing this design aesthetic into the corporate/hospitality world. I recently read an article about the newly unveiled Apple campus using curvilinear walls in their architecture to promote creativity, and I feel that the same is true for bringing new shapes into floral design: it challenges preconceptions and refreshes our palette. Where are we most likely to run into ES Blooms creations this season as we indulge in outdoor Hamptons fun? Munching on delightful eats at Topping Rose in Bridgehampton, indulging in decadent cookies from Levain Bakery in Wainscott, or delivering arrangements to Gurney’s Montauk. We just partnered with Gurney’s for summer 2018, and we’re so excited to unveil our designs in its sumptuous space. How lucky are you and why? I feel beyond blessed to have the support and love of my six siblings and extraordinary parents and to be marrying the love of my life this year. It’s certainly been a year of incredible growth for my team at ES Blooms, and now my family as well! What is the funniest thing that recently happened to you? I was recently meeting my fiancé for dinner in the West Village. I walked in the door of the restaurant, and then made SocialLifeMagazine.com

a beeline for the bar as I saw him sitting on a stool with his back to me. I put my hands around his eyes and said, “Guess Who?” Turned out it wasn’t him! If you could spend a weekend with anyone, past, present, or future, who would it be and why? I would love to go back to the ’70s to spend a weekend with my mom in NYC, partying at Studio 54, sharing a late dinner at her friend’s restaurant Sign of the Dove, and experiencing from a peer’s point of view her sense of wonder, vivacious personality, and deep kindness. What flowers are a must this summer to add Hamptons elegance to any home? Kokedama plant sculptures. It’s a style from Japan I’m very drawn to for its elegant simplicity. This floral art form involves wrapping a plant’s root system in sphagnum moss and then binding it with string, transforming it into a sculptural art form. It can be done with almost any flower or plant and is arrestingly beautiful.

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO EVERYTHING HAMPTONS By Blaire Bass

W

ith all of the fanfare surrounding the land of the rich and famous, people get so excited upon arrival in the Hamptons amid the tree-lined roads, beachfront mansions, and local farm markets. But, where do you go to get a bagel? Take a Pilates class? Cater in? Even Hamptons lifetimers don’t always know where the best dog park is. With scores of tourists and new homeowners every year, we need a guidebook to the Hamptons!

And now we have one: The Hamptons Lifesaver, by Tracey Holmes

So, go and enjoy a fabulous summer fundraiser soirée, listen to the waves and the seagulls, enjoy the many vineyards and restaurants and still know where to have your clothes dry cleaned. Have a spectacular summer in paradise. Buy the book on Amazon.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tracey Holmes has been a longtime resident of the Hamptons and has a passion for all the many unique and wonderful qualities that make the area so special. She embraces her work as a real estate professional with the Corcoran Group and in her spare time enjoys all the special aspects of living on the beautiful East End. Social Life

Book Illustrations by Alejandra Murillo

We stumbled upon this little book that is chock-full of information about where to go and what to do in the Hamptons. It maps out a plethora of options, which will inevitably help you understand why people have been coming back for generations. Discover the charming, historical villages, beaches and bays, farm stands, beauty salons, vineyards, restaurants, sports and recreation, and so much more. The book also shares a little drive through the Hamptons rich American history that gave me a new perspective, and I’ve been summering in the Hamptons all my life. Did you know that Bridgehampton was originally named Bullhead? Its settlers started the community at the head of Sagg Pond and in 1686 a bridge was built connecting Mecox with Sagaponack, which caused the town’s name to change from Bullhead to Bridgehampton. This is a fabulous cocktail chat factoid! The author’s brother-inlaw, Paddy South, also shares his ten true but hilarious “rules” of the Hamptons so you don’t look and act like a tourist. To whet your appetite, take a peek at rule No. 3: Do not use your cell phone in public. It’s annoying and no one wants to hear you shout about your plans for the next 24 hours over the person next to you who is shouting about their latest medical procedure over the person next to them babbling on about their latest lawsuit or real estate victory. None of us want to hear it. No-one cares!

A BOOK TO MAKE YOU LAUGH . . . AND WONDER INVASIONS ON HICKORY ROAD BY JIM DELAY By Patrick Nicholas

Invasions on Hickory Road is a mystical yet insightfully comic story of the folks who live in a sunny suburban neighborhood. On Hickory Road all the houses are numbered, and all the people who live behind the numbers have stories. Some of their stories are hidden away in their hearts, in their closet, in bureau drawers, as secrets they can’t tell. They keep them only for themselves, only to ponder in the dark, behind their windows, inside curtains, in their memories, their wishing, their silence. But before there were numbers on these houses, before there were houses or roads at all, there were secrets in this place. Those secrets will still be here long after memories of the numbered houses are gone. There are things here that none of us can reach; they’re hidden inside realities we don’t yet know. You’ll meet the hilarious, unpredictable adults, children, and pets who live in the 33 houses along Hickory Road as Alicia Baker takes a walk up and down the cul-de-sac. She’ll tell you some things about them, and the author will tell you something Alicia doesn’t know. Many of these characters appear in subsequent chapters as they criss-cross in an out of one another’s lives in ways that are sometimes absurdly funny and sometimes heartwarming. After you read this book, you might start to think about the hidden realities of your own life and the world around you. Available from Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jim Delay is an award-winning journalist. He has written a newspaper humor column; was a reporter, writer, and editor at Life magazine, covering the White House, Congress, the manned space program, and the civil rights movement. He was also the editorial director of CBS and ABC (though not simultaneously!). He is a funny man in print and in person.

LIFESTYLE & BEAUTY EXPERT

HOPE PARFUM Style icon and depression advocate Audrey Gruss launched hope – “the uplifting fragrance,” at Saks Fifth Avenue. This critically acclaimed collection consists of an eau de parfum vaporisateur spray; an eau de parfum purse spray; a hand and body crème, and a heavenly scented candle. The elegant collection is available online at hopefragrancesint.com. Thanks to Gruss, this trendsetting fragrance will give 100% of its net profits to the Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) to fund much needed research for new drugs and treatments to fight depression. “This glorious fragrance stands on its own, but the charitable message empowers you to give back with a product that keeps on giving,” said Gruss.

SCIENCE AWARD FOR WOMEN Gruss, who is a fixture on best dressed lists, was awarded an honorary doctorate of philosophy from the University of Haifa for her courage and perseverance in creating a research foundation to support this visionary mission. She graduated with honors from Tufts University with a bachelor of science degree in biology. A fellow of Tufts University, she has also established The Audrey Butvay Gruss Science Award for women. In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force — a brilliant collaboration of seven leading scientists at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. These scientists have developed an unprecedented research strategy that integrates the most advanced knowledge in genetics, epigenetics, molecular biology, electrophysiology, and brain imaging. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real time, at the HDRF Data Center. SocialLifeMagazine.com

“I am very adventurous; I enjoy exploring and reinventing myself,” explains Irene Michaels who is an actress as well as a beauty and lifestyle guru. Michaels is the founder of ionthescene.com, where she interviews stars at the Oscars and Golden Globes as well as festivals. One of her subjects was George Clooney during the Venice Film Festival. Michaels is also a champion equestrian, a philanthropist, and an entrepreneur whose beauty line, I On Youth, is a favorite of celebrities, including Eva Longoria and Dolly Parton. Michaels has been a dancer, a model, and had a recurring role on General Hospital.

I ON THE SCENE “I love beauty and wellness because I like to inspire women and men about how to be attractive both inside and out,” Michaels says. “When people start to lose their youth, all sorts of things go through their mind, and I like to be here to remind them of always having that healthy attitude in spite of life’s challenges.” Michaels’ I On the Scene web site covers the entertainment world, including the Tonys, Grammys, and New York Fashion Week. “There are always important events to cover,” says Irene.

HORSES WITHOUT HUMANS Horseback riding is Michaels’ passion. This includes working with equine charities, including HARP and Horses Without Humans, which both help find homes for retired racehorses. “I just took a horse off the race track, a beautiful eight-year-old, and brought it to a stable where they cared for, trained, and found a foster home for it.” Another favorite among the causes Michaels supports is the Wounded Warrior Project, benefiting veterans. hen you think of the Hamptons, perhaps music is not what instantly comes to mind. Let us change that for you. The Hamptons has never been renowned for having a big music scene and isn’t a place where that many concerts are held. However, some of the world’s well-known singers, musicians, and composers reside here. Paul McCartney, Madonna, Roger Waters, and Beyoncé are just a few of the many music stars who own property on Long Island’s East End. But it’s not necessarily where they come to be seen or heard. It’s a haven to hide away from big crowds, escape the limelight, and enjoy their beautiful beachfront homes. But then there are moments when they come out to play. Back in 2012 at Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd took the stage. The legendary Billy Joel has been known to surprise the dinner crowd at local restaurants as the Piano Man himself. Having spent nearly his whole life out on Long Island, he references Long Island natives in some of his many songs that were written out here. If you want to listen to some music while sipping a cocktail while you’re in the Hamptons, here are our picks:

Konstantin Soukhovetski Southampton Inn 91 Hill Street, Southampton Thursdays, 7:30 pm; June 21 to August 23 631.283.6500 for reservations Known as the “Rock Star Pianist,” Konstantin Soukhovetski’s will debut his one-man show. He’ll perform his own versions of popular hits from Madonna, Celine Dion, and other iconic artists. A prodigy of The Julliard School, and who hails from Moscow, his scope of talent ranges from pianist to actor to composer.
