Dear Reader, It’s the most wonderful time of year! It’s true that years fly by when you have kids – wow!

Image: VIP EVENTS vipeventsllc.com

We are so excited for you to read the holiday issue of BIBB Magazine – another beautiful collection of articles, inspiration, interviews, and the top gift ideas for baby and kids (moms and dads too!) :) Our family celebrates Christmas and it’s such a special time of year. I am originally from the great state of Maine but have lived in Connecticut for over 10 years now. Maine will always be home though. My entire family lives in Maine (except for my cousin who lives in Louisiana). In fact my entire family lives in the same town I grew up in… Windham! My family is actually the second settlers of Windham – I remember waving in the parade as a little kid. Fond memories. I always say that I have country girl values and big city ambition. I just love packing up the car and driving to Maine for the holidays. I am very close with my mother and it’s not easy being so far (4.5 hours away), so every visit with each other is extra special. For Thanksgiving we usually gather at my aunt’s house and feast, but this year we decided to dine in the great banquet hall of the Sable Oaks Marriott – they put on a beautiful spread. I moderate Turkey Trivia every year, a printed quiz all about Thanksgiving that the entire family takes…we even have gift card prizes for the top point earners. I love doing fun games! We return back to Maine for Christmas too. The brisk cold air, the lighted up houses in my mom’s neighborhood, the smell of the fresh Christmas tree…I love the holidays so much. My mom and I always decorate the tree together with Christmas music in the background with hot tea or sometimes wine for me. She still has these ornaments that I made her as a child! Someday my son will be making me ornaments. Our baby boy is 19 months old – soon 20 months! Not so much a baby anymore. Time flies. Each day I try to be in the moment and play, laugh, and love my son as much as possible. As a mom, magazine editor, publicist, and owner of multiple other businesses, life is busy to say the least. But no matter how busy we are, we always take time to stop, slow down, take in our surroundings and feel gratitude for this wonderful life. And it surely is a wonderful life even though the world can be crazy, we must stay strong; resilient; and hopeful and know that life is still beautiful. Thank you so very much for taking the time to read BIBB Magazine! Make sure to enter our BIG Giveaway HERE for a chance to win everything you see in the catalog section. Your biggest compliment is your share. Happy Holidays…Smile. Love. Be Kind.

Exclusive Interview

Q&A with c kids' space How did you first get into nursery/kids’ space designing?

My jump into the baby industry is a VERY long story about Uggs, celebrities and fashion - that I tell often. The short version is that I’m both creative and business-minded. Out of college for journalism I started a women’s fashion based business and was looking to expand into babies and children. The baby part sort of took on a life of its own and became a retail store, which ironically has very little clothing – mostly features baby gear and furniture. In the first year, I found myself helping parents choose their furniture and then design their entire nursery. I was overwhelmed with the referrals I was receiving and decided to make it a more central part of my career. I was recently given a letter I wrote someone in 1992 where I said I wanted to be an interior designer. I have absolutely no

celebrity nursery, playroom, and designer, Vanessa Antonelli recollection of it, but it makes me feel like I ended up exactly where I should be.

Who are some of the celebrity parents you’ve designed for?

What does every baby nursery need to have?

The most important item in the nursery is often the most overlooked – a great mattress. I’m always shocked by how many people don’t realize how many hours the baby will spend on it and how budgeting for a great one is important. The next most

important thing is storage. I say this so often that I probably sound like a broken record, but kids’ stuff – toys, books and stuffed animals specifically – multiply at an alarming rate. Plus, baby clothes are so teeny tiny and cute, but they get bigger really fast. You will never have enough storage! Last, but still really important, make it someplace you love because you will spend a lot of time in the space. There are no rules on color or style, despite what anyone may tell you. If the room design brings your family happiness then go for it. Just make sure you are also making decisions for convenience in daily life because you never want your parent self to be cursing your formerly pregnant self at 3AM.

What are some easy tips for parents to brighten their child’s nursery?

Large artwork can fill in empty spaces and change the entire feel of a room. It’s also something

you can introduce whether you own your home or are in a rental that doesn’t allow wallpaper or painting. Lately I’ve started doing projects with the parents or older siblings to create the art in the room. It’s fun, unique and special to create something for your baby or sibling. I think every child’s room should have something meaningful in it.

Fashion is a close second. Just because you have a baby doesn’t mean it has to look like a box of crayons exploded all over your home and life. We are so lucky that so many manufacturers are paying attention to both nowadays!

What are some of your current favorite baby products?

Do you have a favorite space you’ve designed?

That’s like asking someone which of their children they love more. I get extremely attached to all of the spaces I design because even though I’m designing for someone else’s preferences and needs, I put some of myself into all of them. So much so that on the final day of installation I always feel sad leaving the home. But, if I absolutely had to choose I would say Angela Simmons’ nursery is the closest to my own personal style. My daughter actually had the same crib and a similar dresser. I tend to lean toward modern, clean lines.

Diaper Bag and Peg Perego Siesta high chair.

How do you balance work and family?

Organized chaos. My husband’s job has similar flexibility to mine and he is extremely hands on. We do a really great job passing the baton back and forth to each other throughout each day. To people on the outside it looks like we have

How do you go about choosing the right baby gear for your store, NessaLee Baby?

It’s important that the items I put myself behind meet the criteria I would want for my own children. There were a few products in the past that I chose for my stores and after using with my own children I had the store team box them up and send them back to the manufacturer because I couldn’t give them my stamp of approval. Function comes first. It has to solve a problem, meet a need or just make life easier in some way.

I have a two year old and six year old so I’ve spent over half a decade trying it all. My current personal favorites are the Bugaboo Bee stroller, Clek Foonf Convertible Car Seat, Mamas & Papas Stargaze Playmat, Nook Sleep Pebble Pure mattress, Nuna Sena play yard, Posh playmat, 7 Am Enfant Voyage

full control, but we totally don’t. At any moment, our kids could overrun us.

What does your family like to do for fun? We are lucky enough to be able to travel often. We love getting away even for a few days to spend

time together. We’re all total foodies, and love experiencing new restaurants. We’re also in the process of house hunting, so Sundays consist of brunch and open houses. You’d be shocked to hear how much opinion can come out of two small kids.

Any favorite quotes that you live by?

This one is reserved for people giving unsolicited advice or really mean internet commenters. “There’s no crying in baseball.” – A League Of Their Own Perfect for when your kids cry about anything that isn’t warranted. “So you agree? You think you’re really pretty?” – Mean Girls Never underestimate the value of a self pep talk. Perfect for when

I am the master movie quoter. I have a whole arsenal of what I consider great quotes for every possible situation. I’m pretty sure that more than half the time people don’t know what I’m talking about. “I so need lessons from you on how to be cool. Tell me that part about Kenny G again?” – Clueless

you have Cheerios in your hair and Play-Doh under your nails. “Talk Less, Smile More” – Hamilton Ok, so it’s not a movie…yet – But, there’s two things I love about it. You can only talk yourself into a problem so less is definitely more and the world could definitely use more smiles.

Do you have any advice to share with other moms?

When it comes to creating your own baby registry, don’t listen to your friends or the internet. It sounds so abrasive when I say it, but it’s true. Your lifestyle and needs may be totally different than other peoples. Take the time to figure out your own needs. Go to a store that’s going to talk you through what your current and future life looks like. You’ll be so much happier in the end! Don’t forget yourself in the process of parenting. It’s ok to take time to do the small things that make you happy. For me it’s a weekly manicure, going to the gym, reading a book and date nights. I believe you’re a better parent when you don’t get lost in only being a parent.

teaching kids mindfu

Teaching kids mindfulness and gratitude is something we should do as parents on a daily basis, but during the holidays – a time of year when we can teach kids to be grateful for what they have curren from others even if it’s just a couple gifts. Amidst the letters to Santa and gift wish lists, this time of returning kindness to others (which is a big part of gratitude, too). Mindfulness is just as important to teach children and Blissfulkids. com shares the benefits of mindful kids: • Improved focus • Improved grades • Decreased stress • Emotional regulation • Increased compassion • Increased conflict-resolution skills So how do we teach our children to be mindful and grateful?

Gabriel Constans, Ph.D.

has been practicing and teaching mindful mediation and mental health for over 40 years in schools, hospitals, clinics, parent groups, prisons, recovery centers, hospice, and private practice. Constans offers these tips for teaching mindfulness: • Sit and close the eyes for a short time. See what happens. Notice anything that comes into awareness, and write it down in your head, as if making a note. “There is... a pain in my butt.” “There is... a thought about Mom.” “There’s... a sound in the other room.” “There is... my head nodding off to sleep.” Give your inner world some love, attention, and gratitude for all it provides. • S.T.O.P. stands for Stop – Take a

Breath - Observe – and Proceed. Whenever we tell ourselves to S.T.O.P. throughout the day, it is a reminder to pause, give attention to the breath, observe what we are experiencing, and then proceed with awareness. There is no limit to the number of times we can use this devise. It can be twice a day, once before each meal, or every hour. • Our breath is always with us, and a focus of attention we can use to instantly tune into our body, and mind, and be grateful for the moment. Belly breathing calms anxiety. Put one, or both hands, on the belly and notice it naturally rising and falling with each breath. Focusing on the belly, with each inhalation and exhalation, relaxes the entire nervous system. gogabriel.com >

Jaime Pfeffer,

meditation and mindfulness teacher, success coach, and mom of two, uses gratitude and mindfulness daily with her children. “We do a mindfulness meditation each night prior to dinner and then we each list three things we're grateful for, a mistake we made that day, and state the favorite part of our day. We've been doing this for over four years. It has had a tremendous impact on our girls, ages nine and five. They are positive, kind and mindful in their lives, and my husband and I often have other parents comment on this.” Pfeffer gives an example of an easy mindfulness dinner activity: “Close your eyes and take a deep breath in. Now breathe it out. Imagine it's winter break. You're home from school. No homework for two weeks! What will you do with all your free time? If you could do anything today, what would it be? Would you spend time reading a book? Or playing your favorite video game? Will you see a friend today? What will the two of you do? If you could see any friend today, who would it be? Where would you go? What do you like best about this friend? Imagine giving your friend a great big hug right now. Take a deep

it’s especially important ntly and for what they receive year should be more about

breath in, and open your eyes. “ For gratitude, the Pfeffer family has been practicing it for so long, but offers some starter points for those new to it: • Start with your family. Which family members are you grateful for? Why? (bonus points for talking about family who are at the table with you). • Focus on yourself. What about you are you grateful for? Your eyes, your ears, your mind? Your awesome jump-shot or super reading ability? • School/clubs/sports: what are you grateful for in these categories? What would life be like without them? jaimepfeffer.com >

She is the author of the new book “Mindful Parenting in a Messy World.” “Don’t wait for the perfect moment on vacation or when the house is quiet (which may never happen) to connect. Use the everyday moments while shuttling them around in the car, brushing their teeth, or packing up for school. I often call them our ‘I see you’ moments, where for just a second you catch each other’s eyes and feel a moment of connection. I’ve also found that showing up as an advocate for my child brings us closer together. I’ll sometimes show up at school with a forgotten item, help type a paper while my son dictates, or bring them a surprise snack when they are reading or studying. I love to remind them that I always have their back.” michellegale.com >

Sharon Cleere,

Author of Buddha Babies Books

is a mindfulness and meditation instructor who specifically works with children and families. She is currently teaching at The Lotus Meditation Center in Denver and has been a practitioner for many years. “Here is my favorite mindfulness game centered around gratitude that is great to do with children during the holidays: The goal of this game is to create a web of gratitude by recognizing all the things people have ever done for us and all the gifts the world has handed to us. You start by picking something in your immediate surrounding and thinking about all of the hands of people who have worked on that item to bring it to you. I always start doing the exercise on my own and encourage kids to chime in once they grasp the concept and feel comfortable. It is incredibly fun to see the creative ways children can comprehend the positive influence others have in their life. The best way to explain the game is through an example:

If I am sitting at the dinner table I might say: I wouldn't be eating at this table if someone hadn't built this table, I am thankful to the person who built this table. Then a child might say: I wouldn't be eating this food if my mom hadn't bought it, I am thankful for my mom. The dad might say: Mom couldn't have bought this food if it wasn't at the grocery store, I am thankful for the grocery story. This exercise can be done with any age group but younger kids might need some encouragement. It may help children to arrive at conclusions of who helped them by asking question. For example, in the situation above I might ask a child where does this food come from? There are no wrong ways to be grateful so even if a child has a response that doesn't make sense we still want to praise them for being grateful and saying something kind. learn more >

For nearly two decades she's helped people get out of their own way and live the life they were meant to live. Through mindset, motivation, and meditation she shows them how to create a life of miracles and magic where every day feels like a day at the beach. Cultivating gratitude and mindfulness begins within each person.

• In order to teach gratitude and mindfulness, parents must model it themselves. • Take a moment to appreciate the blessings and good that is present in daily life. It starts with the small things like the sunshine or the sound of birds singing, and continues on to include larger things like receiving gifts with an understanding of what is behind the gift (the meaning or intention of it). • Tune in to how you are feeling. Noticing what feels good inside (happy content feelings) can direct you to appreciating the things that caused that feeling.Noticing what feels unpleasant inside (sad unhappy feelings) can bring awareness to something that needs further attention and change. • At the beginning of each day, ask the child to share what will make the day great. • At the end of the day ask the child to share 5 things they are thankful for. powerful-mind.com >

JC Cavanaugh,

founder of BodyPositivity.com, also offers tips on teaching kids mindfulness and gratitude: • Parents underestimate how much their children mirror their own behavior. The more parents are grateful and mindful in front of their children the more likely their children will be as well • Habits often are assumed to be negative, but the power of habit can be used for good! The best time to create a habit is first thing in the morning or right before bed. Get your kids in the habit of expressing what they are grateful for at these times. After about 20-30 days you'll find them doing it on their own as it will have become a habit. bodypositivity.com >

New Parents + Sleep Deprivation Our Life-Changing Experience Working with a Certified Child Sleep Expert Our sweet baby boy just turned ONE! He's growing and thriving and we owe it all to SleepWell Baby Certified Child Sleep Consultants. Let me tell a little story…

Our son slept well as a baby; we put him in his Woombie baby swaddle and he slept in our bedroom in a bassinet for the first months of his life. After his nightly feedings he would go right back to sleep and a couple times he slept all night. Then something changed. At six months old our baby started waking up every one to two hours all night long! He was also becoming too big to sleep in his bassinet and it was time for the crib, but every time we tried to put him to sleep in his crib, he would cry uncontrollably so we went in to get him. Back in the bedroom he went. We put him to sleep in our room in the 4Moms Breeze but our baby still

would wake up every one or two hours all night long needing to be rocked or fed back to sleep. As new parents we hoped and prayed he would grow out of it or that it would get better but it didn’t – it only got worse. 16 LONG weeks of constantly waking up and not sleeping for more than two hour stretches – three hours if we were lucky. Severe sleep deprivation set in. My husband, our baby and I were all extremely overtired. Everything started to crumble. Through this struggle the only way to get our baby to sleep for three hours straight (if we were lucky) was to end the night with co-sleeping in the bed or on the couch. I am a HUGE safe-sleep advocate and as a publicist for many safe sleep baby brands I knew how bad this was. It’s a HUGE No-No. No matter how careful you are the unthinkable

Me

e t Va sya

can happen just like that especially when a parent is so overtired. I felt like a horrible mom cosleeping like this; in the moment I was just doing ANYTHING to help my baby sleep which meant my husband and I could sleep a bit too. Things kept getting worse and I did not want to continue putting my baby at risk. I knew there had to be a better way. I searched the internet every day and night reading tips and advice. I bought books, downloaded free guides, and in the end whatever we tried did not work. One source said it was lack of protein so we gave our baby more protein.

Nothing changed. One source said give rice cereal in bottle before bed to keep baby full. Nothing changed and I think our baby got an upset tummy. One source said the constant waking up could be from colic, reflux, or gas and to use gripe water. This seemed to help some but still our baby was constantly waking up. We also bought and tried different sleep sacks. Nothing changed. We then read about the Ferber Method (controlled cry it out) and we tried to do this on our own but it didn’t work. Our baby cried uncontrollably and with no education and support we just could not follow through. We tried so many different things until we found the golden solution. This solution is so valuable it’s truly priceless. I want all parents to know so no baby or family has to suffer like we did. The better solution that worked came from a company called SleepWell Baby, THE BEST certified child sleep consultants you will find. Our consultant, Kelsey Husak, CHANGED OUR LIVES in just 24 hours on the very first night of implementing the custom sleep plan, we saw immediate results. The very first step when working with SleepWell Baby was a 90 minute phone call that was full of education and questions to learn about our baby, parenting style, routine, schedule, etc. Kelsey taught us that our baby was waking up so often and not sleeping in his own crib because our baby did not know how to selfsoothe and put himself to sleep. He went to sleep either in my arms being rocked or being fed, so when he woke up after each sleep cycle he needed these crutches to

go back to sleep. Plus there were many other elements we learned we needed (sleep environment, bedtime routine, etc.). On the very first night our son slept in his crib for six hours straight. This was like heaven after so many weeks of broken sleep, but on night two, our son slept 12 hours straight in his crib – no night feedings, no picking up, no diaper changes from all the night bottles – just blissful sleep. We thought that sleep training would be difficult to do, but when we look back nothing was harder than those 16 weeks of waking up all night long every one to two hours. Implementing the custom sleep plan was easy. It truly was. And it was easy because of Kelsey. She educated us, empowered us, and we had no doubt that our son would be sleeping well before long. We didn’t realize it would happen on the first night though! We really love the gentle method that Kelsey taught us. There was some crying but with their special method our baby always knew we were there and it was amazing to see the transformation. Our poor baby boy was exhausted and craving good sleep. The first night we did about five checks using the method Kelsey taught us. Night two was four checks, night three was three checks, and night four was one check and then no checks were needed. Our son has been a rock-star sleeper ever since and is an amazing napper too. Everything is like clockwork now. Our lives changed drastically. We are rested, happy, healthy and just

everything feels like it’s easy and in order now that our son sleeps so well.

15

Within days of healthy sleep, our son crawled and stood up with no hands soon after. Within weeks he walked by himself at nine months. Our baby is no longer fussy wanting to be held constantly. Our son will sit through an entire restaurant dinner playing quietly. The restaurant staff always says they did not know a baby was even there. So, the best result was the development of our baby and his healthy sleep. The next best results were to my own health. I was able to go back to the gym and started losing the weight I had gained from the severe sleep deprivation. Another benefit was our marriage was back to normal. The lack of sleep for so many weeks put a severe strain on our marriage. Also, our business began to suffer because of the lack of sleep and we saw an immediate turn in this too once we were all sleeping again. We have learned how important sleep truly is. It’s the foundation of everything. It balances our entire lives. We are forever grateful for SleepWell Baby and our only regret was not contacting them sooner! Our babies need sleep to grow and thrive – every parent should learn the education and get a custom sleep plan like we did. You would be truly setting your child up for a lifetime of healthy sleep habits. Imagine your baby sleeping 12 hours in their crib straight every night and having consistent, good naps every day. This is all possible with a little help. Sleepwell Baby offers a free 15 minute call too.

Seasonal Safety

crucial tips for keeping baby safe during the holidays No matter what holiday you celebrate, every parent looks forward to the holiday season with little ones. Seeing the holidays through a child’s eyes is extraordinary. But with all those twinkling lights, presents, and decorations, safety must be a top priority. As you decorate the house and celebrate with family this holiday season, keep these safety tips from the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) in mind: • Never leave a child alone near a Christmas tree. • Use only 'newer' UL-approved indoor lights inside your home. • Consider LED lights which burn cool to avoid burns if your child grabs the lights. • Trim lower branches to avoid eye injury. • Keep the tree in a sturdy, wide stand so it can't topple over. • Poisonous flowers include mistletoe, holly berries, Jerusalem cherries, and

amaryllises. Keep them out of reach of all children. • Keep glass ornaments and detachable hanging decorations out of baby's reach. Consider plastic ornaments or more “baby friendly” ornaments for a few years. • Vacuum often to stay on top of fallen needles so baby can't put them in her mouth. • Discard all wrapping paper, ribbons, plastic bags and other packaging material after gifts have been opened. • Make sure all gifts for baby are large enough that they can't fit in his mouth, ears or nose. • Do not use tinsel or garland because it is a choking hazard and can create an intestinal blockage if a toddler should swallow it. • Double check ornaments and decorations for loose bells and trimmings that could cause a chocking hazard. • Be cautious of heavy stocking

holders. Toddlers can easily pull on a stocking and pull the holder down on top of them. • Be on the look out for hard candies, nuts and other easily accessible foods around the food table.

The JPMA is a non-profit association representing approximately 250 manufacturers who make 95 percent of the prenatal to preschool products in the U.S. market. Member companies are located around the world and manufacturer products in the mobility, feeding, vehicle transportation, health & safety, sleep & furniture, and soft goods categories. learn more >

Dristee is here.

New Brea Protect Ch with Spec There’s a breakthrough invention that will forever change how we protect our family members. It’s heart-wrenching to think of your child being abducted, drowning, wandering off and getting lost, or being left in a hot car, among other alarming and dangerous situations. In all of these scenarios, time is of the essence, and now there is a new smart wearable wristband device that will detect emergencies as they are occurring and send alerts to parent and caretakers' cell phones. Invented by an electronic engineer mother and a successful entrepreneur, father and grandfather, no other product on the market offers such technologically advanced features and complete comprehensive protection with easy to use features. Meet Dristee. Dristee is a wearable, smart device that captures real time detection of emergency threats and sends instant alerts to parents/

outside of any zone, an immediate alert is sent with the Dristee’s geo-location. The technology can locate an individual or a group. Now a parent, from home, work, or remote location, can monitor their child's body temperature and health while they are at school. by troubling reports of young children disappearing and the neglected needs of the elderly and those with special needs. Such thoughts and memories, along with my personal concern for the well-being and safety of my family members, led me passionately to partner with Stuart and create Dristee. For me the importance of Dristee is in knowing that it will serve the most vulnerable people in our communities and by wearing the device they will feel safer and more protected.”

“I first got the idea for Dristee after receiving a phone call from my son about my granddaughter Olivia constantly running off (while her parents frantically searched for her, she would be hiding and giggling thinking it was a game). They asked me if there was a way to track where Olivia was at any given moment. I started to investigate and discussed the idea with my tech/engineer guru friend, Dee Narla,” shares CEO Stuart Reich. “After we put our heads together, we developed the concept and technology and then successfully patented Dristee.”

How to Take B

Capture S The theme of my life is Storytelling. On the set of Hallmark Channel's 'Home & Family' I get the privilege of interviewing actors, musicians, chefs, experts in their field, amazing everyday people who have accomplished great things or people who have overcome incredible challenges and help them share their stories with our audience. After work and on the weekends, I pick up my camera and continue to tell stories through capturing moments. Moments of my family and friends, moments of something incredible and moments of something simple - all captured stories that will live forever in pictures.

Tip 1

You can never take too many pictures. Even when your family starts complaining, keep shooting! When you capture these images you become your own historian freezing a glimpse of time that you can share with friends and family and continue to relive memories.

Tip 2

When photographing my newborn, it's much easier to get what your looking for when they are in a deep sleep. The first 2 weeks are the best window to shoot. Have a plan in place. Know their feeding and sleep schedule and

Beautiful Photos of Kids and

Storytelling Moments work around that. Fortunately that’s all they really do in those first few weeks. Using a warm heating pad (not hot) to preheat (warm) the “set” can keep them comfortable during a shoot. You can also purchase an affordable “heartbeat” sound machine that duplicates the sound of the womb. This can help sooth them as well.

Tip 3

When you are creating images of babies or toddlers, even older children having patience is key. Photographing children can be difficult if you are rushed. If you are using a professional photographer make sure they know what you are looking for from the images and that they are aware of your child's personality. A good photographer should use this information to help create a story or an expression that captures the essence of your child’s personality.

Tip 4

Avoid using strobe lights if you can. A continuous soft light is my preference if I have the choice. Strobe lights can often distract, upset or frighten the smaller ones.

Tip 5

Always have lot of props around ready to quickly change the set up.

Tip 6

It is very important to never put

a child in harms way or near something that will scare them and force an image.

Tip 7

Where and when can parents catch the best lighting for photos? Use window light and/or open shade. Open shade means when you are outside you are not in direct sunlight….you should be able to look straight up and see the sky but not directly see the bright sun. This will present a soft light that will lessen shadows. You can use a white reflector (foam core board) if you wish to add a bit more contrast to the image.

Tip 8

Are new cell phone cameras sufficient to take good photos? If not, which camera should you use? Cell phone cameras can take great pictures, however it is still all about lighting. If you understand light, any camera from a smart phone to a professional camera can capture a great image. But here is my hard and fast rule when using a cellphone camera... NEVER ZOOM IN! If you want to get closer, move closer to your subject if possible. The one exception is if you are in a situation where you have a good, strong light source. Another tip with ANY camera is to always make sure you only include in the frame what you want in the image… even if its negative space. I can’t tell you how many images

I’ve seen what too much meaningless information in the shot. Only include in the frame what you want to have in the picture. Personally, I opt to shoot with pro-grade equipment. My choice is Cannon cameras and lenses.

Tip 9

Remember that when you are taking the pictures, you become the historian, so capture what will make you smile and celebrate your family forever.

Emmy award-winning journalist, Mark Steines, hosts Hallmark Channel's Emmy-nominated "Home & Family." Along with his co-host Debbie Matenopoulos, Steines entertains and informs their audience daily with an array entertaining and relevant lifestyle topics, such as do-it-yourself projects, cooking, celebrities and experts. Why Baby Food as we up in my family’s Mediterranean restaurant, so I created new hospital menus for the sickest patients that were flavorful, low sodium, and nutrient-rich, yet met the hospital constraints of price and ease of preparation. It was amazing to see the transformation There are two things that I believe: in both their health and attitude we can change the trajectory of about life. With my unique human health by focusing background in food and on what we feed our “To change something, build medicine, it became my babies; it is within our mission to take food science a new model that makes the power to reduce obesity to higher level. and food allergies in existing model obsolete.” In 2010 I began intensive children. ― R. My passion for public mission to build a new model to obesity and allergies. I began health and love of science led for baby food on these bold yet by looking at the food on store me to believe my calling was in simple beliefs. shelves. I noticed a repetitive cycle medicine. My rounds in geriatrics of high-processed, genetically threw my aspiring medical career The existing baby food model modified organisms in ingredients, off-course. I met men and women is one component of our public and nutrition facts that didn't who should have been getting health crisis. High-sugar purees, seem reasonable or make better, but who were not. highly processed carbohydrates, sense. I studied a variety of food and ingredients that are virtually manufacturing facilities and the I knew my way around a untraceable can deliver empty commercial kitchen from growing many ways volume can be added For too long baby food has been a joke. Many of us have played the baby shower game where we try and usually fail to identify the muted flavors that come in jars. Yet we use it to nurture more than four million babies each year.

calories and fall short on nutritional requirements. More importantly, some commercial baby foods establish palates and brain responses conditioned to the sweet flavors, don’t expose babies to broad taste profiles, and can lead to the development of unhealthy eating habits for a lifetime.

Written By Bambino’s Frozen Baby Food

e Know it is Obsolete to products make them look healthy and appealing. I sought to understand why the unsavory would be made tasty by adding certain compounds that trick the brain and the taste buds. When sampling baby food that was available in the market, I asked myself time and time again why we came to accept that baby food should taste yucky and unhealthy, and not like real diets. I studied how food sourcing works,

who produces food and how. Advances in agriculture allow us to produce greater volumes of food, but at a price. Pesticides, herbicides, and modifying the genetic code produce vegetables lower in antioxidants, and dairy products and meat proteins with half the levels of healthy Omega3 fatty acids, according to multiple studies. And finally, I reviewed the role of public policy in childhood obesity

and food allergies. Low-cost foods are made with crops that receive massive public subsidies - mainly corn and soybeans. For lowincome families, food stamps only stretch so far, and a box of snack cakes and a six-pack of soda costs half what you pay for a gallon of organic milk and a bunch of carrots. Many parents are already concerned, and commercial baby food sales have been dropping

for the past decade as parents opt to make their own after being dissatisfied with offerings on shelves. And so I set out to revolutionize the baby food stereotype and make the old model obsolete with a modern twist. My research and the research of other scientists has proven we can develop eating habits for a lifetime by introducing balanced, savory meals as first foods. I believe it is imperative we feed our infants organic nutritional powerhouses like wild, coldwater seafood, olive oil, onion, yams, lean proteins, and whole grains for their physiological and neurological development. So let's refine children's diets. The new model for feeding our babies and infants is not an evolution, it’s a return to practices of the past when whole foods were cooked together in healthy combinations of fresh, organic proteins, vegetables, grains and healthy fats. Today we apply research and science to selectively choose ingredients that build immunity to possible food allergens while maximizing required nutrients

important to early development. Through conscious manufacturing, a focus on transparency, and a basis in nutritional research, we have made the old model obsolete. We have made baby food tasty, healthy and desirable by all generations.. Our children’s health depends on it.

Bambino's Frozen Baby Foods is an extension of your love and care. Bambinos Family Team provides the best, most pure, fresh and nutritionally balanced organic baby food to help your little one grow strong and healthy. All of their recipes are created with love and dedicated medical research from founder, Zoi Maroudas, along with leading allergist and pediatrician’s recommendations. As parents to four kids, Fittedtot founders Ashley and John Bosch found themselves looking for a way to simplify clothes shopping for their children. Ashley was doing the majority of the family’s shopping online — both to avoid in-store disasters and because unique, quality children’s clothing seemed limited in their area. But online shopping was timeconsuming, and the dreaded and inevitable return process was beyond frustrating. We find deals to help them stretch their budgets, create recipes to help them have tasty meals, try our products to help them know what to spend their money on, and visit family-friendly travel locations to help moms with their travel planning.

What made you want to start your own blog?

When I started MidgetMomma it was to help people with couponing. Many people would ask me how to use coupons and how I was able to save so much money using them that I started the blog to be able to help as

many people as I could. After time went on it turned into so much more then that. It has now turned into a blog that helps moms with many different parts of mom life, from deals to recipes to family travel, and products that we suggest. We also like to toss in articles about parenting, both the good and the challenges.

Why did you call your blog “Midget Momma”?

I am 4 foot 10 inches tall. When I was in high school people called me “midget” to try and put me down, instead of letting them use it against me, I choose to embrace it. We are all different and we should all love ourselves for who we are and not let others try to put us down.

What are some of your favorite posts you’ve written?

Over the past 7 years there are so

many posts to pick from but if I have to narrow it down to just a few these would be them: Dear Mom: It is OK to Have have YOU Time! There is No no Manual for Being a Parent. Sometimes You Lay Down With Your Leg in a Pack N’ Play

What kind of feedback do you get from your readers?

They love our posts about being a mom and how its ok not to be perfect. I also know they love Black Friday week, when we don’t sleep but a few hours all week to make sure they are able to get the best deals on their holiday shopping.

Do you have any favorite kids’ products you’ve reviewed? This one is tricky because over the years sooo many awesome

products have come into our house for us to test out. My absolute favorite though, has to be the BOB stroller. I personally think every mom should have one. I didn’t have one with my older three kids; it was a dream to have one back then but not in the budget. Then with our youngest I got to partner with BOB and the stroller is more amazing then I imagined before I had ever used one. My all time favorite kids tech item is the Yoshi 3DS – Ok so I might have convinced the kids that they should let me keep it (which they thankfully obliged due to some bribery), but Yoshi is AWESOME and Nintendo is amazing. In second place for tech would be the Nintendo Switch. The kids have put that one to the test and they have raved about it since the first time they played it. Another one of my favorites was the baby Alive Sips N’ Tinkles doll. My Mom always said a firm “NO” when I asked for one as a kid, so that one was totally fun to test out with the kiddos! For the holidays this year, we have quite a few that we are loving, but we are not able to spill the beans on them yet ;)

What do you want your readers to take from your blog? I hope my readers take away from reading my blog that life is life. Life is stressful, life is fun, life is crazy and life doesn’t have a manual, especially when you are a mom. There are going to be good days and there are going to be bad days, but we need to love ourselves for who we are and we

need to just do the best we can as a Mom and not beat ourselves up when we are not perfect. I also hope they are able to find the deals they are looking for when we post them and that it helps them stretch their budgets. I hope that the recipes help them when it comes to making dinner so they are not stuck in the “what should I make for dinner rut.” I also hope that our travel posts help them with their travel plans and help them have fun with their families.

What does your family like to do for fun?

We love snuggle time, and I love that my kids enjoy all climbing into my bed with me and watching a movie together. Waterparks are one of our favorite places to have fun, although I should probably say anything that involves water. Recently we were in Crystal River Florida and went swimming with the manatees and now the kids are asking to swim with more sea

71

life. In general we like to have fun together and spend time together no matter what we are doing. We have found that just about anything can be fun when we do it together. We have recently ventured into homeschooling and the kids do a lot of work things with me, but we have fun doing it so I guess there really isn’t just one answer to what we do for fun :)

What do you do when you’re not working on the blog?

When not working on the blog I tend to attempt to do the Mom things like keep up on house cleaning, however I have learned over the years there are more important things then making sure all the floors are mopped. I work on trying to make homeschooling fun for the kids, and helping them find their interests and learn who they are as people.

I enjoy hanging out with the kids and Tom, hanging out with my parents (who thankfully only live a few minutes away from us) and just being able to have conversations with them. Going out for mom dates with my friends, which for me tends to be long phone calls since many of them are not close by and a lot are military families. Long Beach Island is my happy place and I could go there every day to just enjoy the sun and the sand. When I get the chance to I like to sit down with a hot cup of coffee (or 3) and binge watch some of my favorite shows. That is exceptionally perfect when I can watch a whole series without having to wait for the next episode, so I am a HUGE fan of Netflix.

What’s in store for the future of Midget Momma?

I have an amazing group of ladies who help me with the blog (there is to much for just one person to do alone) and together our goal is to continue to make a difference in the lives of moms. We want to make mom lives easier and better. We plan to continue to make MidgetMomma.com even better and a place where moms know that they will be able to just be them, and that they feel comfortable being themselves, and can utilize our articles to better their lives. We also want to make sure that they are able to enjoy their kids and that we can help them do that by finding them great deals and creating amazing recipes for them. Our kids are only young once so as Moms we need to enjoy that time with them.

Lauren Happel is a mom of three and a wife who loves her family, having fun, traveling, trying new products, helping people make the most of their money and their life. Lauren enjoys helping people with all aspects of their lives, from parenting stories, life lessons, product reviews, deals, recipes, and so much more. The readers of MidgetMomma.com are more then just that they are all virtual friends to MidgetMomma and helping them is a big aspect of Lauren’s goals and life.

What are your family's holiday traditions? What is the meaning of Christmas in your home?

BIBB BABBLE

"We celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah in our family, and my favorite tradition is putting up ornaments. We collect ornaments from every trip and every milestone in our family. Vacation - ornament, pregnancy - ornament, new hobby - ornament. I love when we designate the day to put up our Christmas Tree/ Hannukkah bush and hanging up each ornament together while remembering what it meant to us. To me, the holidays are all about togetherness and family, and taking the time to reflect on what is most important."

Marina Miller, CEO, Peurobaby.com

"Traditions are everywhere in our home! It seems my kiddos decide that once something is done once, and they like it, it's a yearly tradition! But most importantly are the times we spend all together. In the busy life of kids, family time is fleeting. Christmas Eve service, and then late night noshing and gift opening is one of our favorites! Christmas day ice skating and fires on the lake are a close second.”

Alicia Overby, Baby Elephant Ears

“Our meaning of Christmas is togetherness. This year we are foregoing exchanging gifts (except for Santa!) and instead building memories through family experiences. We have so much to be grateful for and it’s not all about receiving something purchased at the mall. We also do random acts of kindness all year long but especially during the holidays.”

Karen Koslov-Barski, The Woombie Baby Swaddle

“I have always loved Christmas time and it’s even more special now that we have our son. We travel to Maine to be with my family. We have a delicious dinner and since I love to cook, I help my mom with the menu. This year we will have prime rib with roasted veggies and a festive crispy beet salad. Plus, veggie lasagna for the vegetarians in the family and Christmas sangria with other food and treats. Everyone brings three gifts and we play these really cool games to see who ends up with what. It’s so much fun and the best part is to be with family. Togetherness tops all. We also adopt a family or two each year and deliver a huge bag of gifts. This is perhaps the best part of Christmas – giving back. Lastly, Christmas also means the beginning of a new, amazing year so I jot down my goals and dreams and start the new year off right.”
