A47 Mobile Library Mexico City, Mexico A Freightliner M2 20K lorry full of books and supported by a cultural programme is travelling the streets of Mexico City, providing the residents of various neighbourhoods in the capital with access to its contents. Every centimetre of its 20 square metre surface area is in use as a venue for book presentations, film clubs, poetry readings, workshops, as well as the opportunity to meet and socialise in a busy city.

Bargoed Library Bargoed, Wales Many different buildings are finding new life with a variety of sometimes unexpected functions. Formerly dilapidated, the Hanbury Road Baptist Chapel in Bargoed has been transformed into a new library as part of the regeneration of the town. It is now offering a modern library service including a social enterprise cafe, family history resource centre and activities to create an education and community hub.

Outdoor Library Magdeburg, Germany This library in an abandoned district in East Germany is built from recycled beer crates and wood from an old warehouse. Residents were involved in the design, books were donated to fill the shelves, volunteers ran the cafe, and people took part in poetry slam events and book readings. The library is open 24/7 and book borrowing and returning is managed entirely on trust.

The Uni Project New York, USA The Uni is a portable reading room. Sharing books, showcasing the act of learning, and improving public space. It all starts with a cube... Many cubes hold books. Some hold activities like origami, flash fiction, and chess. Some are in Spanish, and some are in Chinese. Some special cubes are curated by others (institutions, educators, and individuals) who have a passion and depth of knowledge on a specific topic. The Uni Librarians mix and match the cubes depending on where they go.

Virtual Public Library Klagenfurt, Austria A public library using QR codes and stickers. The QR codes act like barcodes, that users can swipe with a mobile phone, and be directed to a website where they can download free e-books. The books chosen often have a historical or cultural relevance to the location of the sticker. The group responsible are aiming to release instructions for replicating their system soon so anyone can turn their city into a library.

Library Maker Space Westport, USA The Maker Space is a new way to use your Library, in addition to finding books and movies, working, viewing art, meeting friends and attending programs. With tools and resources for inventing and creating and a 3D printer, the 'Maker in residence' is currently producing two large model airplanes.

Paradero para Libros para Parques (Places in Parks for Books) Bogota, Columbia There are over 100 PPP's in neighbourhoods across the country, staffed by volunteers, often at weekends. The kiosks offer people the opportunity to read and borrow books, children can get help with their homework and various activities including book reading and music events bring people together around literacy.

Station Libraries Many libraries have declining numbers of members, but experimenting with the location of a library can make a difference. Placing libraries in highly visible and accessible locations - such as on the platform at a train station where many people are waiting and have spare time. The reading room on Hackney Downs station has events and talks alongside the books. Harlaam Station library has over 24,000 people use the workspace or borrow books since opening recently. Trade School Worldwide: London, New York, Cardiff, Glasgow, Paris, Milan, Bangkok, Guadalajara, New Delhi... Trade School is an open learning space, where anyone can offer to teach. Pupils sign up and agree to bring an item requested by the teacher in exchange for class. No money changes hands. It is a social way to surface and share skills and resources already present in the community, and offers inspiring informal learning opportunities to complement traditional adult education services.

Idea Stores Tower Hamlets, UK This east London borough closed 15 libraries and opened 4 new Idea Stores, close to markets, transport hubs and housing estates. They are a reinvention of what a library could be, and include a library service, adult learning, after school activities, local information, a cafĂŠ, health services, and cultural activities.

Store Front Library Boston, USA This is a temporary library in high street store front with 5,000 books in both Chinese and English, computer terminals and Internet access, newspapers, a children’s reading area. A mix of programs and activities included Drawing Lab, Human Development Studio, multi-lingual story hours and a drop in English conversation group.
