life, lottery & the pursuit of holiday happiness WHEN BRAD PITT SHARED, IN A RECENT FEATURE IN THE NEW York Times, “Life isn’t always the lottery it appears from the outside looking in,” I think many of us took pause to think about that truth for more than a moment. Anyone who knows and reads this magazine realizes that although we present the freshest, most positive and prettiest picture of life in Texas as we can, we sometimes may make it all look a little too easy.
the stunning dresses and dapper tuxedos, as any event leader can attest. We applaud you and look forward to another year ahead of sharing the best of the best of Texas events and global happenings where our favorite Texans are attached. You can count on us. You can also depend on us to provide up-to-the-moment insight of where to go, what to see, and how to do it in grand style, thanks to our talented editorial, digital and publishing teams who are the wheels in the machine you’re holding. We like to call it our Social Code...it’s similar to the sage Cowboy Code that many refer to daily. It includes taking pride in your work, and when you make a promise, keep it. Remembering that some things will never be for sale and live each day with courage. Then, there’s knowing where to draw the line is often as important as when talking less is saying more.
These five-star events we chronicle, celebrate and elevate take a tremendous amount of time to create in the first place. You know that. A seasoned chairperson, or an executive director of a non-profit philanthropic endeavor, knows that the planning for the following year begins the very same night that the current year’s gala is still occurring, even before the last car is retrieved from the valet line, or the final tally has been totaled for the evening’s live auction items. It’s a litany of work: preparation, rehearsals, chair leaders announced, committees formed, This time of the year, you bet we’re both sentimental and opevent planners hired, emcees enlisted, press releases drafted, timistic here. It’s a special time of the season to enjoy family invitations sent, and about a thousand other details...have to Photography by Gregg Cestaro and friends and take stock of the future ahead. When you feel be streamlined for the magic of that one glorious evening that changes the course and impact of each organization it benefits with the funds like you’ve got your arms around something, then it’s time to go get your arms around something else. Until we meet again in the ballroom helping others, it raises. Whew. have a blast and celebrate all that life has to offer. s So, the images and stories we present about each of these special evenings over the year take an entire year to come to fruition. It’s so very much more than

VICTORIAN RADICALS British art had a dynamic period of growth in the late 19th century and was revolutionized by new avant-garde techniques of the Victorian era. The San Antonio Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibit Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts and Crafts Movement highlights this time period with various paintings, sculptures, and jewelry. Busy mom, wife and interior designer, native Texan Elizabeth McAllen Roberts of San Antonio is considered to be one of the chicest women in the state. Here, join our always-curious reporter Lance Avery Morgan to find out what she’s loving the most these days. My interior design icon is...John Saladino. I love his quiet and elegant interiors. There is something very peaceful, yet grand, in all of the rooms he creates. One interior design accessory I can’t live without is…great art.
My favorite coffee table style book is…Roomscapes: The Decorative Architecture of Renzo Mongiardino. The last meal that truly impressed me was…Restaurante La Tienda in Marbella, Spain. The Foie Gras a la Plancha is simply the best.
How I made my first dollar growing up...I grew up on a working cattle ranch in deep South Texas and would work at our family’s ranch food commissary on Saturdays with my grandfather.
Book I’ve read that made a lasting impact on me was... Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. The story of Lewis and Clark and their epic trek across the Continental Divide is truly incredible.
What I love most about living in the San Antonio/ South Texas area is...The ability to go from the city to the country in less than twenty minutes. The best of both worlds.
In my fridge you will always find…a container of half-andhalf (for my morning coffee). Favorite street to shop on in the world is…Via dei Condotti in Rome.
If I could live in a foreign city because of its design aesthetic, it would be...in Madrid or Florence.
My perfect day would end with...dinner with my family.
Last thing I binge/marathon watched was…The Handmaid’s Tale. I am a huge fan. First album I bought was…The Cars. It was a 45 mile drive to get to school in the mornings so The Cars made the daily drive way more entertaining. We listened to it on an eight-track cassette player (does anyone know what those are anymore?) in our Town and Country station wagon.

An artist whose work I would collect is…anything by the Spanish painter Juan Sorolla or Joaquin Torres Garcia; Taller Torres-Garcia. The best gift I have received is…It would probably be the gift of advice given to me by my grandmother. When my sisters and I were younger she used to say, Always be a lady. I can still hear her voice saying that in my mind. s

During the holidays, our emotions can run high, from the office to our travels. Our Ms. Modern Manners Sharon Schweitzer, J.D. is here to the rescue to help remedy sometimes awkward situations. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, At work Casual Friday seems to have turned into Casual Every Day. I was raised to dress for the job I want, not the one I currently have. How do I manage peer pressure in the office by appearing as I want to–usually dressier than my colleagues? Aptly Attired Dear Appropriately Attired, If you want to make a good impression, the first step is presenting yourself well. Like it or not, clothes communicate volumes, especially in the workplace. The key is to make sure that your professional wardrobe aligns with your career ambitions. Yes, dress for the job you want. Standing out among colleagues is a delicate balance. You want to blend in well as part of the group; however you need to dress just a bit better. This is where the 25% rule applies. The goal is to dress 25% better than your peers. If your colleagues wear tee shirts and jeans, maybe wear a golf shirt with slacks, leather shoes, and a matching belt. If your colleagues wear denim dresses, consider wearing navy or black dresses. When using the 25% rule, know your dress code and corporate culture. Avoid making a poor impression by arriving in a silk suit and stockings if your office is business casual. The goal is to mirror your supervisor’s style without sacrificing your authenticity. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, Our family of six is flying from Dallas to Montreal for our December holidays. How do we civilly settle who uses which airplane armrest? Also, we are traveling to Antarctica for New Year’s Eve. Resting In Peace Dear Restful Relaxer, Currently, arm rest etiquette is one of the most hotly contested travel conundrums. When it comes to armrests, it’s one armrest per passenger. The armrest with media and electrical outlets for your seat number is yours. If media outlets are limited; and if you are comfortable, have a short conversation with your seatmate and compromise. Civilly take turns charging
46
your devices or consider sharing a single armrest with two elbows instead of two arms. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, What is the current take on the etiquette of reclining our seats during a 10-hour flight from Houston to Buenos Aires, Argentina? Non-Stop To Fun Dear Fun Lover, Currently, reclining your seat is the most hotly debated travel etiquette question. Some view it as their right, while others see it as unspeakably rude. In general, unless flying on a long cross-country or international flight, experts agree the best etiquette rule of thumb is to avoid reclining your seat. Due to seat configurations, there’s reduced leg room space. Remember, reclining seats removes additional space from the passenger behind you. On your long-haul (international) flight when you will want to recline to sleep; confirm the passenger behind you isn’t eating or working on their laptop on the tray table before reclining. The best social graces include asking if they mind if you recline your seat. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, As the holidays draw near, everyone seems to be in a joyful mood. Some of us may be slightly depressed; reminded of loved ones long gone. How do we politely deflect unwanted conversations? Seeking Solitude Dear Solitary Soul, Looking forward to a quiet afternoon in a coffee shop, library, or on a flight to nap or read your book; but chatty Cathy has other plans? As Emily Post says, “If you can’t choose your environment, create your own.” At all times, and especially during the holidays, carry an eye shade for napping. Consider timely use of earbuds to listen to music or movies; or earplugs to block unwanted conversations. If someone won’t stop chatting with you, smile and say, ‘It’s been so nice visiting with you. I’m going to read for a bit now. Excuse me.’ s

how to winterize your style
Want to be the coolest guy in the room at your Christmas gathering? Yep, so do we. Here are five stylish items to add to your closet this Christmas that will keep you both warm and stylish, according to our globe-roving style editor Lance Avery Morgan. COOL IN CASHMERE This is a classic that every man should have in his winter wardrobe. If you are feeling in the spirit, you can even wear something that reflects the cold weather in your most stylish way. Brunello Cucinelli cashmere sweater, $995. At Neiman Marcus. OUTERWEAR TO REFLECT INNER HIPNESS It’s not every Christmas we get to wear a turtleneck in Texas, so pair one with a sport coat or overcoat for a more polished vibe. You’ll look great when you arrive, and you can always take off a layer if it gets too warm inside and still look dapper. At Barneys New York.
UP TO YOUR NECK Scarves are making a big fashion statement right now–and they’re not just for wearing on the street to ward off the chilly elements. If you’re one who overheats in a turtleneck, this is the perfect alternative to look warm and stylish as you celebrate holiday cheer.
GET A GRIP A good pair of leather gloves is something that can last for years, especially in a warm-weather place like Texas where you don’t have to wear them daily…or even weekly. When you do, these are reversible in leather and quilted nylon. $68. At Polo Ralph Lauren.
LONG NIGHT, GREAT MORNING Founder Benjamin Smith of Disco, the new Austin-based premium men's grooming brand, is on to something healthy with the debut of his new line of seven products. All natural, they have some key ingredients like caffeine to reduce puffiness under the eyes, aloe vera to calm irritated skin, essential oils for a natural, clean scent, and hyaluronic acid to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. entertain
soirée secrets
As the holiday season gets into full swing, hosting a holiday party is one way to fully engage in this special time of year. These ten helpful pieces of advice, chosen randomly from years of experience, may be helpful from our entertaining etiquette expert, Jay Remer.
1. HOUSEHOLD ROUTINES CAN CHANGE DRAMATICALLY over the holidays. These changes affect everyone in the house, especially children and pets. When possible, keep their daily routines such as eating, bathing, and sleeping on a regular schedule. There is enough outside stimulation and breaking from daily routines rarely has a positive effect.
use such occasions as excuses, but wasting food and intoxication are not requirements for having a successful and enchanting celebration. Nothing beats a plate piled high with all of your favorite foods, especially those that rekindle the warm memories of past holidays. Moderation here is merely a suggestion. If you are reading this, you know exactly what I mean.
2. Christmas is unquestionably the worst possible time of year to give pets as gifts. This is a disruptive time of year and new four-legged additions to the family acclimate best when a regular routine can be put in place, and where excessive excitement is at a minimum. At the best of times, small children and animals do not interact well unless under adult supervision. No one wants a traumatized puppy or an injured child. So please, do not give pets as presents.
7. Small children and household pets are suddenly surrounded by new stuff. As far as they are concerned, it needs to be put in their mouth. This can be disastrous. Many holiday plants such as Poinsettias are toxic to pets, very toxic. Ditto chocolate. Ditto electrical wires. Keep a watchful eye where necessary. Remember the old adage: Avoid the avoidable.
3. If you put up a tree, I recommend using a stand that has a reservoir for holding water. Christmas trees will stay fresher and drop fewer needles if kept watered. Fire safety is important at all times, but during the holidays, with a fresh tree and some greenery on the mantel piece, a roaring fire in the fireplace needs to be very carefully monitored. Freshly cut trees consume a lot more water than one might imagine. 4. You cannot change your family or their habits. Not everyone in every family gets along for any number of reasons. However, this does not mean incivility is appropriate or acceptable behavior. Everyone needs to be respectful and cordial. If this is difficult, keep warring parties separated. Also, keep a close eye on alcohol consumption as this has been known to have the ability to ignite flaring tempers. This is not a time for judgement, but compassion. 5. Get into the spirit of giving. This is the most important time of year to remember those members of our community who struggle to survive. Food banks are wonderful places to make donations, even in the name of others, as a gift. There is no competition in giving; and it is true that giving gives you a greater sense of gratitude than does receiving. 6. It isn’t necessary to overeat or drink too much over the holidays. We
52
8. If you are a guest at a holiday dinner party, be sure to bring a hostess gift, even if you are bringing a holiday gift as well. They are totally different gifts. A hostess gift is an act of giving thanks and requires no thank-you note. Christmas and Hanukkah gifts need to be acknowledged with a handwritten thank you note, written and mailed or hand-delivered within a few days of receiving the gift. 9. Ending a festive party can always be a challenge. Subtle signs such as closing the bar and turning off the music usually do the trick. Be sure not to let any of your guests drive home if they have had too much to drink. Given the strict drunk driver laws on the books today, it’s not difficult to figure out who should not be behind the wheel. When in doubt, take the car keys and either call a taxi/Uber/ride service or help find them a ride home with someone who is sober. 10. I always make sure to clean up after all parties, completely if possible. Staff should be encouraged, if not bribed, to stay late and finish cleaning up everything. There is nothing worse than waking up to a sink full of dirty dishes, pots and pans. The odd soaker is one thing, but a sink full is quite another. I would much rather be emptying a dishwasher than loading one the morning after. But maybe I’m just quirky. May your holiday season be overflowing with magical moments, which will become wonderful memories. s

So many interesting people, places and things have a Texas provenance. Here, our native, roving Texan Lance Avery Morgan, explores a few you may not know about quite yet.
Dorothy McGuire and Robert Young in Claudia, 1943 Photo courtesy of IMBD.
DRAMATIC LICENSE Leave it to a Texan writer. Rose Lewin Franken, esteemed author and playwright was born in 1895 in Gainesville, near the Texas-Oklahoma border. Her books, often made into films, were the toast of 1940s Hollywood. They included the 20th Century Fox Claudia series of movies, starring Dorothy McGuire and Robert Young, that swept the box office.
BUILDING BLOCKS In Waco, on the Fixer Upper series starring Chip and Joanna Gaines, there’s a tall building shown with the letters ALICO. But what do they represent? It was built in 1911 by the architectural firm Sanguinet & Staats for the Amicable Life Insurance Company. In 1966 it became the American-Amicable Life Insurance Company, at which time the building underwent renovations, including the addition of the large neon sign at the top of the building displaying the acronym, ALICO.
WAX WORKS Just when you think you’ve possibly seen all the religious art in Europe, then there’s Fort Worth. Yes, the Last Supper has been rendered in wax that would rival Madame Tussaud’s. At the Christian Arts Museum.

HISTORY 101 Most Texans these days don’t know that in 1861 most of Texas voted to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy—except for Travis County where Austin is located, and the nearby Union-friendly Gillespie County, where the Hill Country’s Fredericksburg is located. IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? The global phenomenon, Dr. Pepper, many people do not realize, started in Waco, in 1885. That makes it a year older than its rival, Coca Cola. With its mix of fruity syrups, is the rumor true that prune juice is one of them? Nah. The delicious beverage quickly became part of 20th century advertising folklore with slogans like Drink a bite to eat at 10, 2, and 4 that was rivaled by the later, 1970s Be A Pepper. To aim at young consumers, it even sponsored Dick Clark’s American Bandstand TV show in the 1960s. For the holidays, heat it up for a tasty treat.

SECRET HIDEOUT The most coveted and difficult place to get into L.A. these days is the new San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood. BEYOND CORNY Brothers Neil and Carl Fletcher started this country's obsession with fried foods when they invented the corny dog in Dallas in 1938. It was introduced at the State Fair of Texas in 1942 and has become an iconic part of the State Fairattending experience. The secret to the famous Fletcher’s Corny Dog crunch is not only the trademarked batter, but also the water temperature and how the batter is mixed. The Fletcher family recently purchased a food trailer to allow them to cater off-site events throughout Texas. At FletchersCornyDogs.com.

Aid the Silent, the beneficiary of Fashion In The Hills, reflected Ramey’s vision of expression through fashion. The nonprofit empowers the deaf and hard of hearing by providing hearing aids not covered by insurance. Dian and Harlan Stai, longtime benefactors of Houston Grand Opera, hosted a recital and brunch at Mansefeldt Ranch, their idyllic hill country ranch near Fredericksburg. The event was held in the Sheep Barn, which is a barn in name only. It originally had granite gravel floors from its construction in 1878 and in 2002 it was re-furbished as an event venue retaining the original limestone walls. The afternoon featured performances by members of the Houston Grand Opera Studio that included soprano Elena VillalĂłn, mezzo-soprano Leia Lensing, bass William Guanbo Su, and pianist Kyle Naig.
Sarah and Ernest Butler
THE STYLE: Amongst the venue’s walls that are covered with original works of art, a beautiful grand piano sits prominently atop the landing at the far side of the building from where the singers wooed the crowd with personal selections of songs that had special meaning to them. Everything from operatic arias, to traditional Chinese art songs, to favorite hymns were represented in the program, and masterfully presented by the singers.

THE STYLE: The event, planned by Paulette Moser of
Mansefeldt Ranch, had tables that were adorned with beautiful black and white linens, with bronze sculptures created by the nationally recognized sculptor Stefan Savides, on loan from the RS Hanna Gallery in Fredericksburg. Each centerpiece featured unique scenes of wild birds that were beautifully surrounded and accented with floral décor of peonies, roses and hydrangeas by Maggie Gillespie Designs. The inspiration and theme for the centerpieces being one of taking flight, was a nod to the young artists who each are taking flight in their professional careers, all meticulously executed by Maggie Gillespie. Following the recital, guests enjoyed a delicious meal, catered by August E’s Fine Dining’s Dawn and Lew Ouanesavanh, that featured a chicken picatta and beef tenderloin entrée with a slice of layered cake, decorated to look like a piano keyboard.
Katie Reynolds, Claire Reynolds & Jane and Rusty Beard
THE PURPOSE: This annual event has a history dating back 18 years, where it started in 2001 as a small gathering that the Stai’s hosted in their home for family and friends. It was an opportunity to bring operatic music that they often enjoyed at the Houston Grand Opera, one of the largest, most innovative and highly acclaimed opera companies that has one of the most respected young artist programs in the country, to the Hill Country. Today, it has grown into a full-fledged recital and brunch that is attended by almost 200 guests annually. s

Jet Linx Celebrates Austin Opening In Style By Jake Gaines | Photography by Greg Harrison JET LINX AUSTIN RECENTLY COMPLETED THE COMPANY'S roundup in Texas as it becomes the fifth private Jet Linx terminal to open in the Lone Star State. It joins Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Houston. To celebrate, team members from across Texas joined their colleagues in Austin to welcome current and future Jet Card members and aircraft owners to the new facility for a grand opening event. Jet Linx Austin General Manager Lee Lancaster noted the party reflected both the service of Jet Linx and the spirit of Texas. “It was a lively opening party with a huge turnout. The luxury jets on display, the hors d'oeuvres, and the Texas artisan craftwork all made it a memorable evening. You would expect nothing less from Jet Linx.” About 250 guests from the Austin-area and all corners of Texas mingled while exploring the new space, which completed construction at the end of June. The 2,000 square foot private terminal is highly visible at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and anyone that arrives or departs the airfield will see the large Jet Linx sign in view. The evening of the event, guests could tour multiple static aircraft on display, including a Gulfstream G-280, a Falcon Jet 8X, an Embraer Legacy 500, and a Bombardier Challenger 350. The Austin event was alive with Texan flair, from food to entertainment. Hors d'oeuvres were passed and cocktails were served.
Two Texan artisans were also present, showcasing high-end, handmade wares, each the result of generations of practice. Engraver and silversmith Clint Orms, world-renowned for his meticulously designed and crafted work, was on hand displaying his intricately-engraved belt buckles, cuff links, and money clips. Dustin Lauw, one of the finest bootmakers in Texas, shared his bootmaking methods that have been time-tested over four generations. “The whole evening had a very Texan feel. It was nice to see team members from San Antonio come out to show their support,” said the Director of Jet Card Sales in Austin, Katie Burns. She was eager to see the base open. “Austin is rapidly growing as a city, and Jet Linx has also seen a lot of healthy growth. I feel those two factors are going to create a recipe for success,” she said. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 100 people move to Austin every single day. For more than five years, Austin has been the fastest-growing major metropolitan area in the country. Many of the new arrivals are younger and work in the tech industry, which provides opportunities for Jet Linx Austin to grow. “We feel like we’re in a perfect position right now. Austin is exploding, and we’re situated right in the middle of other Jet Linx bases in Texas," Burns noted. "That allows us to work together to improve our offerings to clients." s

provided by Dede Loughran of Acme Rental who expertly placed some of HMH’s collection of handmade butterflies throughout the silver-lined tables to give a personal touch to the overall look. The floral décor was created by The River Oaks Plant House. Chef Smirnov Catering provided the Kosher culinary array representing old world Asian, Japanese, Israeli, Russian and Italian delicacies. Music was staged on each floor with Moodafaruka playing in the first floor’s Garden of Hope, Divisi Strings on the second floor, next to the three-story high Butterfly Loft, and John Acevedo playing Flamenco jazz guitar on the third floor near the board room with its assorted desserts.
PURPOSE: Tali Blumrosen, former museum chair and current board member, coordinated the evening’s event in conjunction with the Holocaust Museum Houston’s Managing Director Tamara Savage. More than doubling in size, the new facility will rank as the nation's fourth largest Holocaust museum. The new threestory structure will house a welcome center, four permanent galleries and two changing exhibition galleries, classrooms, research library, café, 200-seat indoor theater and a 175-seat outdoor amphitheater. s

THE SETTING: Austin’s JW Marriott was the recent setting for the Ballet Austin Fête and fête*ish after-party. This year’s event, Fête Couture kicked off the Austin fall gala season in high style. During the course of the evening, over 600 guests fortunate enough to be a part of the festivities were treated to a fabulous evening of fun and fashion. THE STYLE: The night began in the ballroom foyer for cocktail hour. Over 300 black-tie clad attendees took advantage of the stylish theme by donning their finest interpretation of couture that created a seamless and beautiful tapestry with women wearing everything from bold prints to sequined gowns. The men donned tuxedos, many of whom took the liberty of wearing colorful dinner jackets that reflected bold fashion choices. The action then moved to the ballroom for the main program where, Master of Ceremonies, Society Texas’ own Lance Avery Morgan, effortlessly kept the festivities flowing, all the while an additional 300 partygoers were getting the fête*ish Fashion Never Sleeps after-party revved-up in the ballroom next door. Fête and fete*ish were then fused together as one party when the doors opened between the two ballrooms to reveal fête*ish well under way. Then, the start of the dazzling runway show, courtesy of internationally renowneddesigner Celestino Couture, featured 23 stunning looks that brought the crowd to their feet. The afterparty ensured that the fun continued well into the night as guests danced the night away and toasted the success of the evening.

THE SETTING: The Palmer Events Center in Austin was the recent setting for the Women’s Symphony League’s 65th Annual Jewel Ball and Luncheon. Over the course of two days, nearly 1,700 of Austin’s social, fashion and philanthropic dynamos were a part of the festivities, which included the presentation of this year’s debs with a special appearance by fashion icon Brooke Shields. THE STYLE: The first day of events commenced with the fashion show luncheon featuring over 600 of Austin’s top fashionistas. The cocktail-chic patrons began the festivities with a VIP reception where adoring guests had the opportunity to take their photo with the guest of honor, Brooke Shields. The fun then moved into the main auditorium for lunch and the afternoon program. Highlights of the luncheon included a fashion show featuring the season’s top looks from Julian Gold as well as a conversation with Brooke Shields that was effortlessly moderated by Rank & Style CEO Jamie Chandlee. The pageantry continued into the second day of events culminating with the 65th Annual Jewel Ball presentation. Over 1,000 black-tie patrons began their evening with a cocktail hour where conversations flowed and families mingled, while also bidding on their favorite silent auction items. The fun time continued as the crowd took to their seats for the main jewel ball presentation, which in addition to the Austin debs featured eight visiting Jewels from Texas and beyond. The evening concluded as the Jewel’s and their families danced the night away, capping off an incredible two days that those on hand will not soon forget.

Benjamin and Guest, the daughter of legendary socialite C.Z. Guest, discussed the women and history that inspired her book, a historical novel detailing the relationship of Truman Capote and his bevy of elite Manhattan women he called his swans. Guest recounted how she knew Capote well since he was a frequent visitor at her family’s summer home. She shared vivid memories of time spent with Capote and her mother’s view of him before and after the publication of his thinly veiled short story in Esquire magazine, La Côte Basque, 1965, that divulged the most intimate and embarrassing secrets of his closest friends, the swans. The conversation was enlightening for the author as well. Attendees sipped raspberry garnished champagne, enjoyed a refreshing light lunch and sweet treats by Rosemary’s Catering, and tried their luck at winning the raffle drawing “A day of luxury,” provided by Neiman Marcus and Catrina Ball tickets provided by SAPLF. Booksellers Barnes & Noble sold out of two of the author’s titles, The Swans of Fifth Avenue and her newly released The Mistress of the Ritz.
THE PURPOSE: Liecie Hollis and Caroline O'Connor, the luncheon event’s co-chairs, are also SAPLF board members. Proceeds from the gathering raised critical funds for the Library Foundation in support of their mission to strengthen the library service to the community. s

UR LITTLE CAR, RESEMBLING NOTHING MORE THAN a collection of suitcases on wheels, crept mid-morning into the empty village of Casanova Lerrone, located in the province of Savona in the northern Italian region of Liguria, about 50 miles southwest of Genoa. If it were to have eyes, the coupé would have been casting bold glances around its church square and few shops wondering, as were we, “Where was everyone? Were we in the right 18th-century Italian hamlet?”
Italy This Morning
In the Ligurian countryside, there were quite a few paths from which to choose, or, as we feared, inadvertently wind up on, leading us way off course. Like all “visitors”, we did not want to do anything wrong. Yet, even with no one to be found in the streets, in any of the forlorn appearing shops, and the darkened businesses seemingly abandoned, we had that feeling of being watched. Bashful, we and our little car, stopped at a signpost full of markers, like a multi-fingered hand, with each blue digit route marker pointing its own way and distance. Keep Going, it seemed to whisper. Don’t Yet Turn, it beckoned. Then, a text came through the mapping on our phones, jolting us forward into action. We sauntered out of the village and made our way up the hillside of curves and turns, climbing higher and higher into the mountains until we reached what appeared to be the ultimate dead end: a garage door with 13 ominously painted upon it. Nothing more than a pebbled path ran alongside it. We stopped again. Make Sharp Turn Right, the screen screamed.
Our friends, who had been tracking our progress, had already opened the gates to Villa Barca as a welcome. Across the gravel drive, an orange stucco house built successively over several centuries, with multi-level gardens and sweeping terraces and patios awaited us.
Cautiously, we inched forward and saw the road actually continued going higher toward the clouds. Both car and passengers took deep breaths and held our sides in, then maneuvered a hairpin turn in the truest sense of the word. Watch Out For Goats, we learned on our own from observing. As if on cue, a few goats soon meandered in front of us after we cautiously passed another turn. We paused as they moseyed and munched their way along, soon joined by the rest of their goat gang and herders, human and canine. Clearly, we were the visitors in this crew’s estimations―time and goat wait for no one. Then, as with all journeys, we were there. But where, what precisely was our destination?

Our friends, who had been tracking our progress, had already opened the gates to Villa Barca as a welcome. Across the gravel drive, an orange stucco house built successively over several centuries, with multi-level gardens and sweeping terraces and patios awaited us. On a table, binoculars and its owner’s cell phone confirmed: we were, indeed, being watched; our automotive hesitancies as we made our way was the lunchtime entertainment. Away from the hurly-burly of corporate life, and, yes, the deadlines that follow every writer, to what would be our home for the next two weeks. And so we were to find and fall in love with the rhythm of what I’m sure some marketer would term as the villa lifestyle. For us, it was a respite to do absolutely nothing at all if we wanted to. Our hosts had retired from owning a popular and highly successful bed-and-breakfast in a prominent Northeastern resort town. They, then opened Villa Barca their Italian venture, on something of a referral-only basis to truly just friends and family gleaned from their previous venture.
Villa Wake-Up Call

What followed after a light breakfast was the difficult choice of whether to soak up the sun on the terrace, or venture to the beaches thirty minutes away in Alassio or Cervo. Maybe even help in the many gardens the owners planted to make the villa as sustainable as possible and save a trip back down the hillside to the not-nearby grocery store? We opted to view the agricultural activity from a potting shed, turned into a breeze-cooled sitting room. An ideal day in Liguria perhaps would begin with a trip to the beach and a chaise in a bagni (beach club), complete with sumptuous towels, changing rooms, and showers. If you want to go to the beach, it may be the only option to pay the fees charged by these many places that dot the boardwalks. The public beaches, when you can find them, seem no bigger that the few beach towels that inevitably will already be there.

Brackenridge Park Conservancy Celebrates With Gala Dinner By Jake Gaines | Photography by Limelight Photography
Joe and Rhonda Calvert
THE SETTING: Community leaders,
city officials and advocates in support of the revitalization of Brackenridge Park recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Brackenridge Park Conservancy near the historic low water crossing. Guests enjoyed a 3.5-mile train ride through the park, a sunset reception, and dinner under the stars while marveling at the historic San Antonio River and the crossing originally constructed in 1917 to connect both sides of the park. Each year, the organization highlights different areas of the much-loved park. The park is home to dozens of historic buildings, bridges, walkways, and water features. This year’s event, staged at the historic low water crossing, supported operations and raised awareness of the infrastructure improvements needed in this area and throughout the park to bring it back to its glory days.

THE STYLE: The gathering honored
Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, founder of the Central Park Conservancy, who played a key role in the creation of the Brackenridge Park Conservancy. Fondly known as Betsy Browning, a member of a long-time San Antonio family, she is the author of nine books, including the latest, Saving Central Park: A History and A Memoir. Currently, she is president of the Foundation for Landscape Studies in New York City. Special recognition was also given to the San Antonio Conservation Society in celebrating its 95th year. The Conservation Society led the way to form the Brackenridge Park Conservancy in collaboration with City of San Antonio leaders and park stakeholders and provided funds to hire the first executive director.

with a VIP pre-party hosted by Fabergé. On display was the bespoke, two-carat emerald in its setting that was donated to the event’s live auction by the iconic internationally-renowned jeweler. The party kept its momentum as the Club PetSet Young Professionals took over the back ballroom, transforming the space into their own nightclub. DJ Senega got the crowd moving and shaking on the dance floor, while others participated in an ultra-competitive wine toss and silent auction. Champagne flowed as DJ Senega’s beats, accentuated by the live saxophone stylings of Andre Killian, resonated throughout the hotel’s ballroom foyer.
THE PURPOSE: Tena Lundquist Faust, Tama Lundquist and Kisha Itkin, the event’s co-chairs, asked the crowd to open their hearts and their wallets to support the cause. The generous attendees responded accordingly, as the gathering raised more than $440,000 to fund the many animal welfare efforts throughout the city. s

WHY CHOOSE PRE-JUVENATION? PRE-JUVENATION is a new concept of using self to rejuvenate self and to slow the aging process of facial tissues. By using our own body’s healing capacity, we can improve the changes of facial aging—or at least slow them down. PREJUVENATION treatments are performed in our office with minimal downtime. The primary concept is to promote deposition of elastin and collagen the key components of our facial tissues by performing microneedling using the new only FDA approved microneedling instrument, the SkinPen. A microneedling treatment delivers a very gentle stimulation to skin to activate the healing cascade such as deposition of new elastin, collagen and the ingrowth of micro blood vessels that can supply more nutrients to the skin. We are also very excited about treatments of facial skin with PRP (platelet rich plasma) which is prepared using your own blood to harvest specific cells that will activate the rejuvenation cascade within the facial skin. The field of biologic therapy (using your tissues) such as blood, fat cells and bone marrow to stimulate your own body to heal an injury, enhance a surgical procedure result or improve the changes of facial aging is a rapidly expanding field within the fast-growing sector of rejuvenative medicine. Presently, an extensive body of research is dedicated to this growing technology around the world. The future for biologic therapies is promising and research results for this science are encouraging from around the globe. We look forward to meeting you to further discuss this exciting field of facial rejuvenation.
