ONWARD AND UPWARD. FROM THIS MOMENT ON. STARTING here, starting now. Moving on up. The myriad of euphemisms we consistently use to help propel us forward is legion. Because, really, the past is like a foreign country: they do things differently there, and those customs should be acknowledged, but you don’t have to make it your own. That means, really, let’s not be absorbed in the past, shall we, but make way to embrace the new, the bold, the brilliant things that we can all create with the talents we have... and can form.

And oh, how we love talent. With the New Year, New You sensibility on our minds around here, we well know how talent works. It’s either inherent (too rare) or acquired (talent and luck happens when preparation meets opportunity, to paraphrase the Roman philosopher, Seneca). Both ways, we embrace how talent can positively affect so many, especially as our world has both contracted and expanded over the last couple of years with the pandemic. So, I think we can all agree that turning the calendar page from 2021 to 2022 felt like a breath of fresh, optimistic air. Out with the old, in with the new. Something that we always love are weddings and new marriages that represent new life journeys, as you’ll see throughout this special issue devot-

ed to them. From around the state, we have corralled so many fine examples of how the big day was achieved flawlessly...and yes, with plenty of talent to make it happen behind the scenes. What is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion for most is memorialized within these pages. I know that I love to look back on family photos of marriages to see how they have progressed from comparatively simple affairs to exuberant expressions of love with many family and friends in attendance as well-wishers. The Power of Kindness Let’s face it: our social and emotional muscles may have atrophied a bit during the pandemic. With renewed strength and vigor, let’s approach the world with more kindness, recommends our Austin-based Resonance Repatterning expert, Mary Schneider. WHERE ARE YOU, KINDNESS? HAS KINDNESS DISAPPEARED? IF IT HAS, WHERE DID IT GO? and why? Is kindness a casualty of what transpired in the past few years? Asking this question of ourselves is important. There are those who think this is true, believing kindness in our culture has atrophied since the pandemic. Much anecdotal evidence seems to support the truth of this claim. Stories come from all cultures and parts of the country. Could it be possible that fear and isolation have lessened our ability to be generous and concerned about others without expecting praise or reward? If this is the case, we can take steps to roll it back to pre-covid standards post-haste. Kindness is human nature. It is innate. Experiments with infants conducted at Yale University concluded it is inherent in human beings. Even in observing young children at play, their empathy (among other things) is often revealed. Kindness also has intrinsic value. In their book, On Kindness, Barbara Taylor and Adam Phillips stressed how “real kindness changes people, often in unpredictable ways.” This idea suggests that kindness is transformational for all parties and supports the fact that kindness is much more than just being nice. As an example, I personally experienced this over the course of a decade of holiday seasons. My friends and I would buy carloads full of toys and take them to Blue Santa. Transforming our holidays in unexpected ways was more fun and joyful knowing that others, much less fortunate, had the opportunity to encounter the same. Kindness is a virtue. It is written about in countless books, some published before the time of Christ. A topic frequently referred to in the Bible, kindness shows up in other important spiritual texts. With its sister-virtue, humility, kindness is a pre-requisite for many other virtues. Humility begets kindness; kindness begets humility. Plus, not unlike humility, if you think you have it, you probably don’t.

SKILLFULLY KIND Others describe kindness as a skill, possibly contradicting Yale’s research. This belief suggests kindness is a learned behavior. Maybe true for some, this idea seems to negate the innate nature of kindness. Genuine kindness is a radical act. For a while, the bumper sticker Practice Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Beauty graced scores of cars. At the very least, ‘random’ and ‘senseless’ indicate enthusiastic unpredictability, while ‘skill’ implies a modicum of predictability and uniformity. Kindness is much more than just being nice, emerges here. Either way, nature or nurture, kindness includes the absence of the need for recognition. Long before the appearance of Christ, Wikipedia writes, “Aristotle defined kindness as ‘helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself, but for that of the person helped’.” So, where are we today pre-post-covid? What might be the most fitting and proper behavior to commit to during this holiday season? Given it has been some time since we wholeheartedly embraced celebrating, it might behoove us to create an intention. An intention marking the revival of Christmas, New Year’s, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Boxing Day, St. Nicholas Day, and other holidays may be in order. Let’s commit to reminding one another that kindness is innately human. Remembering who we are in our essence and recalling how it looks and feels, let’s pledge ourselves to random acts of kindness and senseless beauty once again. Without expecting praise or reward, it could be the stylish-hip-sophisticated thing for the yuletide season, for there is nothing more hip, stylish or sophisticated than being kind to others...and ourselves.

MY NEW BOOK, THE 6 PILLARS OF CIVILITY, IS ESSENTIALLY a road map to, well, civility. There is an appetite for returning to a society where we treat each other with respect and courtesy. Fortunately, thanks to a handful of curious scientists, we are beginning to understand how our brains function, allowing us to realize our behaviors are primarily grounded in survival, not just pleasure. How people interact with one another should reflect mutual respect and kindness both publicly and in their private interactions. Civility is the umbrella under which etiquette and decorum rest. Since overwhelming incivility often surrounds us at times, I thought sharing my observations could offer a positive perspective on how to regain civility, often by employing the self-reflective exercises that follow each chapter. One favorite is Blended Families and Holidays. Family structures can be complicated and confusing today, particularly as multiple marriages create blended families. As a result, tensions can arise, especially around holidays, weddings, graduation ceremonies, and other celebrations. However, these command performance events should bring out our best behavior, which can sometimes mean biting your tongue and showing compassion.

However, surprises will occur, and it’s best to start by defusing any negative vibes as quickly as possible. Remembering to keep our composure in the face of turmoil is the sign of a great host. Being a great guest can present challenges as well. As somewhat of an extrovert, I like to converse with everyone at most gatherings, including people who may be difficult. Take the high, less traveled road and approach everyone with the same sense of humility and respect. At weddings, family tensions can arise. Adhering to proper protocol is helpful. First, the host must determine the guest list in order of importance. In most cases, the relationship between the marrying couple and their guests determines priority. However, flexibility is necessary because each family is unique. Remember weddings are for brides and grooms and celebration. In fact, another life transition moment, funerals, are often highly emotional celebrations of life. Most people attending share great sadness and grief. Funeral arrangements are often the shared responsibility of the deceased’s next of kin, the funeral director, and a clergy member. Too often, wellmeaning friends and family are actually in the way. Allowing the grieving process to unfold for people in their own way is the compassionate way to handle these stressful times. No two people experience grief or loss in the same way. Kindness goes a long way in letting others understand your true intentions and feelings.

Difficult as it may be, we must put our core differences aside in deference to why we have gathered together in the first place. This can be much more challenging for some people than others. If you cannot control your emotions or maintain a level of acceptable civility, then it is best not to accept the invitation in the first place. Dinner parties involving assorted family members and friends can challenge the host when planning a seating chart. Placing potential combatants well apart and out of range of even possible eye contact makes the meal more pleasant for everyone. The host must know the dynamics of the guest list well in advance of their arrival. We usually know where danger may lurk, but we would do well to get the current state of affairs from someone in the know.

Graduation ceremonies can also be stressful events for a variety of reasons, as well. Sometimes, seating is limited. Perhaps the scheduling makes attending difficult. Nonetheless, it’s a significant milestone in anyone’s life, and we should accord it the proper respect. Emotions can play a role in any celebration like this, and allowing each of us to show our feelings is a compassionate act we can all embrace.

LEXUS HAS UNVEILED AN ALL-NEW NX FOR 2022. WHILE it is the brand’s luxury-subcompact SUV, it is also, in many ways, a flagship model for Lexus. It is the first to feature the new Lexus lettering across the rear hatch, never before offered technology, and is the first plug-in hybrid to wear the Lexus badge. Aimed squarely at the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Audi Q3 models, the new NX needed to bring a lot to the table, and the small Lexus doesn’t disappoint. RESPONSIVE AND FUN The NX offers two gasoline power plants and two hybrid options. While the base NX250 features a 203-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic and is surprisingly responsive and fun to drive, especially with the optional allwheel-drive. For those wanting more power, the NX350 delivers 375-hp from a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with standard all-wheel drive. But while these conventional power plants are very good, I predict that most luxury buyers will be more interested in the hybrids, which offer more horsepower and better fuel economy than their all-gas counterparts. The hybrid drivetrains include the NX350h, which packs a 2.5-liter fourcylinder, two electric motors that make 239 horsepower, and the top-spec plugin NX450h+ producing 302-hp powertrain, to offer up-to 36 miles of electric

driving per charge. For the performance-minded driver, the F Sport package offers appearance upgrades and adaptive suspension. While the standard suspension does an excellent job at providing decent handling while still offering a luxurious ride, the F Sport does raise the fun factor when you are on a twisty road. Yet, I suspect most NX buyers will find the appearance part of the package more appealing than the handling. Where the NX really shines is in the redesigned interior, which feels far more luxurious than you might expect in a sub-compact SUV. Ambient lighting, quilted leather-heated and ventilated seats, and the optional wood inserts all feel like they belong in a much more expensive vehicle. The much-maligned “trackpad” infotainment interface has been replaced with natural-language voice recognition that wakes up with the command “Hey Lexus,” allowing the driver or passenger to do anything from get directions or search for a restaurant to turning on the windshield wipers or adjusting the temperature. The dualzone voice recognition can differentiate between driver and passenger, allowing passengers to adjust their climate zone separately from the driver’s simply by speaking the command. The user profiles are stored in the cloud so the unique settings can travel with you between vehicles.

The top-tier NX450h+F Sport starts at $57,975, but if the plug-in hybrid doesn’t fit your lifestyle, the NX350h, with the optional luxury package, will give you the best of everything.

RECENTLY, ON A CHILLY AUTUMN NIGHT, BOTH international and Texas-based guests flocked to the opening night soirée of the exhibit in Los Angeles, In the Now: Gender and Nation in Europe, Selections from the Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl Photography Collection. It features a selection of two hundred contemporary photographs by women artists from seventeen countries in Western and Eastern Europe. The collaboration between Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and The Brooklyn Museum is a partnership that enables each institution to significantly augment and diversify its photography holdings over the next ten years as well as advance curatorial research, travel, and scholarship, signaling an innovative and financially sustainable new approach for museums to expand their collections. A seated dinner was held to celebrate the debut of the images at Ray’s, the restaurant that is a part of LACMA. The glamorous guests, from around the world, and of course, Texas, were on hand to fête Haukohl’s artistic collection achievement. On hand to share toasts were LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg, Director Michael Govan, as well as Shelby White and Leon Levy Director Anne Pasternak of The Brooklyn Museum. Beyond the wine and champagne that flowed freely, guests dined on a selection of seafood, as well as being tempted by wonderfully sugary desserts as the evening progressed. The week of Los Angeles events included a distinguished trustee’s reception at the residence of venture capitalist, David Bohnett. The celebration continued at the new Pendry Hotel on Sunset Boulevard. Both LACMA and The Brooklyn Museum, exemplary institutions representing both coasts, benefit from the generous gift from Houston-based collector Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl, whose expansive collection has been built over the course of twenty years and showcases an impressive range of styles and approaches to photography from that period. The collection features works by nearly ninety emerging and established women artists, including Yto Barrada, Carolle Bénitah, Melanie Bonajo, Natalie Czech, Eva Koť á tková, Vera Lutter, Josephine Pryde, and Shirana Shahbazi.

The gift will be made in installments over the next ten years, with the first including twenty works selected by Haukohl. The two museums will also receive a donation of ten additional works purchased by him. Both museums will each individually acquire an additional ten works chosen in concert with the curators, expanding the initial gift. Furthermore, his gift includes the Haukohl Travel Grant, which provides resources to advance curatorial travel, research, and scholarship each year for the next decade. These funds will allow curators to attend European photography fairs and exhibitions such as Les Rencontres d'Arles, ARCOmadrid, and Unseen Amsterdam, further enabling targeted additions to the collection by all three parties. The exhibit runs at LACMA through February 13, 2022, with a 2023 exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. A sensational Los Angeles and New York triumph.

THE SETTING: A picture-perfect autumn evening at Austin’s Laguna Gloria was the scene featuring a night of fun and philanthropy. The 360 patrons, sociables, and VIPs on hand for the 8th Annual Contemporary Art Dinner were treated to a dazzling evening that those fortunate enough to attend will not soon forget. THE STYLE: From the moment the patrons walked up to the gates of Laguna Gloria in their finest cocktail attire, guests knew they were in for a magical evening. The festivities began with a cocktail hour where partygoers gathered with friends on the beautiful Laguna Gloria grounds. Meanwhile, art collectors could be seen heading to the villa to preview works of art from internationally known artists in advance of the live auction. Revelers then proceeded onto the central lawn for dinner al fresco and the main program. While attendees dined on a delectable, multicourse meal, they were treated to words from the event and organization’s leaders celebrating what was for many their first gala in Austin since the pandemic began. The action then turned to the main event…the live art auction. Christy Williams Coombs, of Sotheby’s, headlined the auction for the seventh consecutive year. Included were works by Loie Hallowell and Adam Pendleton that each fetched over six figures. In addition, the paddles-up giving opportunity raised over $250,000 to bring a temporary and permanent outdoor installation for the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria. The festivities were capped off with an after party where the crowd danced the night away to songs performed by Riders Against the Storm. THE PURPOSE: The event, co-chaired by Kristin Gish and Kathleen Loughlin, raised over $1.7 million for The Contemporary Austin, with the museum giving back $345,000 to artists from the live and silent auction proceeds. In addition, funds raised from the evening’s event will go towards The Contemporary Austin’s exhibition programs.

THE SETTING: Recently, the Houston Grand Opera opened its 67th season with a historic return to the stage for live opera, with the opening night production of Bizet’s Carmen. Following the performance, the celebration continued as over 370 guests progressed to a tented Ray C. Fish Plaza to usher in the next era of HGO and welcome new General Director Khori Dastoor.

THE STYLE: A tragedy of obsessive love, Bizet’s Carmen was first staged in 1875 and is today considered the most popular opera in the world. A full house smiled with recognition when the well-known first notes of the prelude rang throughout the Brown Theater. After the concert, as the lights came up, black tie clad opera-goers enjoyed an intimate seated dinner with a close circle of Houston arts supporters and enthusiasts. The décor, created by The Events Company, burst with the same jewel tones of Ashford’s production and was accentuated with touches of black Spanish lace—a nod to Carmen’s femme fatale costumes. Inspired by the production’s Seville setting, City Kitchen Catering presented a colorful three-course feast, including Tarta de Santiago for dessert. THE PURPOSE: Betty and Jess Tutor chaired the event, which raised $460,000. The opening night performance of Bizet’s Carmen was performed by HGO Studio alumna Carolyn Sproule, conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya, and brought to vibrant life with striking costumes and captivating dance by award-winning Broadway director and choreographer Rob Ashford. This production delivers a thrilling experience to an audience starved of live grand opera for over 20 months.

THE SETTING: The San Antonio German Club recently hosted its annual Opening German gala in honor of the season’s debutantes. Held on a crisp, cool autumn evening at The Red Berry Estate, owned and operated by the RK Group, the ball offered a glorious night of dining and dancing in celebration of the club’s group of young ladies being presented to the city’s society in such stately surroundings. THE STYLE: Resplendent in gorgeous white gowns, this year’s debutantes sparkled as they were presented by their fathers, then led to their escorts. A tent was constructed by Illusions Rentals & Design to hold the presentation ceremony, and Catering by Rosemary created the food stations. The cuisine was situated outside, in front of the estate, by the water’s edge under a moonlit sky. Ramiro Cervera and his Orchestra provided the live music for the presentation and the first dance of the debutantes with their fathers. The floral decor was created by Danny Cuellar and the Trinity Flowers team. The multi-colored arrangements provided the stunning color palette for the presentation stage and the tabletops. The after party music was provided by In IOCity and DJ Genafire. THE PURPOSE: The 2021-2022 President is George Edward Hinchey, and Stuart Lee Cavender, Jr. was the chairman of the 2021 Opening German. Formed in 1880, an inspired group of young San Antonio men gathered to create a new social organization. They named it The Ascension Club, which quickly flourished in San Antonio’s society. In 1890, under the leadership of J. Riley Gordon, Oliver Warwick, George W. Martin, and Francis L. Town, the name of the Club was changed to The San Antonio German Club, after The German, a popular dance of the era, which became a traditional dance during the Club’s early years. For 141 years since that time, with the exception of only a few years, the San Antonio German Club has presented its debutantes during San Antonio’s social season.

THE SETTING: The 2021 Cattle Baron’s Ball was recently held at Gilley’s Dallas with award-winning country music fan favorite Dierks Bentley performing on the Andrews Distributing Main Stage. Chairs Diana Hamilton and Heather Randall returned to serve as leaders for an unprecedented second year after the pandemic caused the cancellation of the 2020 ball. Their efforts raised a whopping $3,665,700 for the American Cancer Society. THE STYLE: The evening included cocktails, buffet dinner, raffle, silent and live auctions followed by the concert. The Country Music Association’s award-winning Cole Swindell appeared on the Copart VIP stage prior to the live auction. THE SETTING: The 51st Annual Witte Game Dinner, an iconic event in San Antonio, was held with pandemic protocol in place, outside the Witte Museum’s beautiful eight-acre campus in the Zachry Family Acequia Garden. The event’s theme, The Lone Star Revival, celebrated the organization’s emergence from survival mode to a new revival. And, for the Witte, it was a reinvigoration of its mission to have a part in shaping the future of Texas. Fireworks rounded off the celebrations as the total amount raised was announced, adding to the already sparkling evening. THE STYLE: Many of San Antonio’s most philanthropic donned their Western finery for a night of delicious wild game cuisine by the RK Group, live auctions, and a live country music performance by Aaron Watson at the Mays Family Center. This year, the Witte honored Kathy Mays Johnson and the Mays Family Foundation as the Texas Heritage Award recipients for their impact on the organization and across the state. THE PURPOSE: The event chairs, Dr. Bob and Stephanie Girling, and their committee created the theme for the evening that raised nearly $1.2 million to support the Museum’s recovery fund, including $115,000 in field trip funding. The Game Dinner is the Museum’s largest fundraiser, having funded educational programs, operations, and exhibitions for 51 years. The pandemic made this year’s event crucial to ensure that the funding needed for approximately 350,000 school-aged children and their families was available for them to experience all the Witte has to offer, physically and virtually. XPEL and the Mays Family Foundation were the dinner’s presenting sponsors. Additional sponsors included Valero (Scholarship Sponsor), Dr. Bob and Stephanie Girling (Entertainment), and the Tex Elliott Family (Texas Heritage Awards).

THE SETTING: The Corinthian in Houston was the opulent setting for an incredible night of fun and fundraising. Nearly 450 of the city’s most notable sociables, philanthropists, and VIPs turned out for the 29th Annual Children’s Museum Gala and, with the night’s The Great Gatsby theme, ensured a roaring good time was had by all fortunate enough to be a part of the evening.

THE STYLE: The Roaring 20s-inspired black tie crowd began the night with a lively cocktail hour. Upon arrival, guests had the opportunity to pose for pictures with costumed flappers to commemorate the evening. The speakeasy theme ensured that the spirits flowed as freely as the witty repartee. Patrons also had an opportunity to bid on an impressive array of silent auction packages, inspiring them to get into the giving spirit of the evening.

Partygoers then gasped as they stepped down onto the main floor of the Corinthian to head to their seats for the main program. The space was transformed into an underground Cotton Club that would have made those who attended such parties a century ago green with envy. As guests dined on a delectable multi-course meal, they were treated to the evening’s program. Highlights included a spirited live auction featuring an Astros suite with a baseball signed by the entire 2021 Houston Astros team, as well as an opportunity to host a night at the Children’s Museum of Houston. The evening was capped off with an after party where revelers danced the night away to the tunes of the Love and Happiness band.

THE SETTING: A picture-perfect Saturday evening

in Austin was the recent setting of one of the Capital City’s most anticipated fall events. Over 500 sociables, philanthropists, and other VIPs descended upon the JW Marriott hotel for the SAFE Storybook Gala. The event, A Coat of Many Colors, unfolded like a classic fairy tale. The evening featured great friends, touching tributes, and most importantly of all– fundraising. THE STYLE: The first chapter of this magical evening began in the foyer of the JW Marriott Austin for a lively cocktail hour. Here, the guests, many of whom donned colorful ensembles, sipped delicious drinks while getting reacquainted with old friends and making new ones. Additionally, guests could peruse silent auction items, preview live auction items, and purchase raffle tickets to win luxury items that were being awarded to supporters.

Turning the page, partygoers entered the JW Marriott ballroom for the main program. As guests dined on their delectable multicourse meals, they were treated to words from the SAFE leadership, as well as several emotional testimonials showcasing the positive impact the organization has on the community. Other highlights of the main program included a spirited live auction and honoring philanthropist Gary Walker with the Guardian Award for his tireless support of the organization. The evening concluded with an after party where guests danced the night away.

THE STYLE: The much-anticipated 2021-2022 DIFFA/Dallas Style Council Ambassadors DIFFA Legends were announced during the event. The new members joining the Style Council are Alison Volk, Chris Angelle, David Dummer, David Putnam, David Weir, JD Miller, Ken Weber, Kimberly Alexander, Neil Thomas, and Yana Greenstein. THE PURPOSE: Event chair and DIFFA Board member, Al James, shared that DIFFA is one of the largest and most successful fundraising organizations aiding HIV/AIDS. The Dallas chapter, formed in 1984, is one of the largest HIV/AIDS organizations in Texas that provides funding to local HIV/ AIDS Service Organizations within the DFW community. The organization has granted more than $8 million to 25 frontline HIV/ AIDS Service Organizations in North Texas, providing direct care to those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

CLAUDIA KIOLBASSA, OF SAN Antonio, Texas the daughter of Nita and Michael Kiolbassa and Luke Hendry of Boerne, Texas, the son of Tory and Gary Hendry, were recently married in San Antonio. They were attracted to each other’s kindness, faith, and sense of adventure. The couple dated for two and half years and were engaged for 11 months. Luke successfully surprised Claudia by secretly arranging a curated creekside picnic lunch for the couple, thus creating the perfect setting to pop the question. At the same time, his sister concealed herself in the nearby woods‒ telephoto lens at the ready to photograph the special occasion. It was a joyful afternoon and cause for celebration. The rehearsal dinner was at the San Antonio Country Club. For the wedding ceremony at Christ Episcopal Church, summer garden pastels of blues and pinks were chosen. When the bride arrived at the top of the sanctuary

aisle, it took five trumpet calls to catch her attention and that of her father, who were deep in conversation awaiting their cue. Alas, the doors opened to reveal Claudia and the joy on the relieved and very patient groom’s face was worth every suspenseful moment. The bride wore a Carolina Herrera wedding dress made of a guipure lace with a strapless fitted bodice with an A-line skirt, accented in back with a blue silk faille bow, from Julian Gold Bridal, San Antonio. The guipure bolero was added to create the complete gown, while the in-house custom veil was also created from the same lace as her gown to frame the train perfectly. The bridesmaids’ gowns, designed by Creivax et Cie of San Antonio, were of satin-backed crepe in sky blue and embellished with white Swiss guipure to match the bride’s gown. Not only was there a “get the bride down the aisle on time” moment, but there was also a “where’s the bride and groom?” moment. After the ceremony, while the newlyweds were taking pictures at the church, the bride’s brother told the wedding party’s bus driver that they were “good to go.” However, it wasn’t until they were halfway to the reception that they realized they had left the bride and groom behind. The bus and wedding party returned to the church to find Claudia and Luke standing in front of a quiet church and empty parking lot. The summer garden party theme continued to be the inspiration for the reception and sumptuous seated dinner at The Argyle, where the floral decor created decorative nuances that enchanted all. A selection of the bride’s favorite Ginger Margaritas and the groom’s preferred Old Fashioneds greeted guests upon arrival. At the same time, a handturned champagne decanter supported the grand methuselahs of Perrier Jouet that kept the flutes fresh all evening.

The evening’s dance band, The Big Swing and the Ballroom Blasters from Atlanta, provided a breakout quartet as background music during the reception. As a special surprise for the bride and groom, the tented front lawn was partitioned with a drape, concealing the dance floor and bandstand area during the cocktail hour, which was removed to reveal an acrylic dance floor floating over a continuation of the floral designs. Dueling pianos and brandy freezes punctuated the celebration. The bride attended The University of Alabama and is a studio artist. The groom graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and is the marketing manager at Anera Sports. The couple honeymooned on Harbour Island in the Bahamas. They now make Dallas their home. The Hendrys especially enjoy parenting their golden retriever, Scout, and supporting each other’s interests, including travel, art, and golf.

ALEXIS SIMÓN, THE DAUGHTER OF Alejandro and Elsa Simón, and Gordon Moore, the son of Jon and Marisa Moore, were recently wed in beautiful Coral Gables, Florida. The bride and groom initially met through mutual friends. They reconnected when Gordon saw Alexis at a local Austin gym where they were both members. Initially, Alexis was more interested in working out than striking up a conversation with Gordon. However, about a week later, Gordon noticed on Instagram that Alexis was attending a wedding in Cuernavaca, Mexico. “He decided to direct message me a fire emoji to get my attention,” Alexis Moore recalls. The couple was mutually attracted to one another’s philanthropic nature through giving back to their community. They decided to go on their first official date a week later by attending Ballet Austin’s Fête in the Fall of 2018, and the rest, as they say, is history. After a year and a half of dating, Gordon was more than ready to pop the question, which he did in February 2020, but not without some

serious improvising. “I coordinated with Rachel (Alexis’ matron of honor) to get Alexis over to the Four Seasons in Austin for drinks,” muses Gordon. “It was a cloudy, cold evening, and Alexis was reluctant to go outside.” Undeterred, Gordon was able to coax Alexis outside, but not before she saw her favorite photographer at the doorway. Gordon then got down on bended knee to propose to Alexis...with the photographer on hand to commemorate their once-in-a-lifetime moment. Like many other engaged couples during the pandemic, the duo created a wedding that was as unique as their love. The couple was wed in a civil ceremony in September 2020 at the Four Seasons Mexico City, where the bride is from, knowing that a Catholic ceremony and reception with loved ones would be on the horizon once the pandemic lifted. A year later, the couple did just that, with 200 of their nearest and dearest joining them for a wedding celebration in Coral Gables, which commenced with a rehearsal dinner at Palm D’or in The Biltmore Hotel. included the traditional components of a Catholic wedding ceremony, including the arras and the lasso, in keeping with family tradition. The bride’s favorite moment of the ceremony was arriving with her father at The Church of the Little Flower in a 1965 Rolls Royce Phantom. With a surprise beforehand. “We were told that the church lost power for several hours due to rainstorms earlier on the day of the wedding. The power came on again just as Bishop Vasquez entered the church 30 minutes before the ceremony,” recalls Alexis with a laugh. A perfect sign to the couple that the power of love always conquers all. The wedding party consisted of ten house party attendants, fourteen bridal attendants, and ten groom attendants. Carly Bucklin served as maid of honor, Rachel Mullins served as matron of honor, and Daniel Price was the groom’s best man. The wedding reception, held in the Country Club Ballroom at The Biltmore Hotel, featured a white and gold color palette that perfectly

complimented the timeless, elegant, classic theme. The bride slipped into a wedding reception dress designed by Essence of Australia. The bride and groom’s first dance was Fly Me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra, where Gordon, in his favorite moment of the ceremony, lifted up Alexis during the song’s crescendo, as sparklers went off around the perimeter of the dance floor. After dinner, as guests danced to the tunes of the Aragon Artists–Soirée band, they were treated to a French fry bar, tres leches, and NadaMoo! ice cream. The reception was capped off with an after party, which lasted until 5:00 am and included several members of the wedding party jumping into the pool, still in their gowns and tuxedos. Both the bride and groom completed their undergraduate degrees from The University of Texas at Austin, and Alexis received an Executive MBA from Baylor. They reside in Austin, where they now make their home. The bride is a travel advisor with National Travel, an affiliate of American Express, and the groom is the National Sales Director at NadaMoo!. The couple, who honeymooned at the Four Seasons Hualalai in Kona, Hawaii, have many mutual interests, including a passion for fitness, travel, wine, and supporting non-profit organizations in Austin.

The duo was married after dating each other for four years and an eleven-month engagement. The bride, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the groom, a graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, now live in Chicago. The Windy City will be their home while Patrick is studying for his MBA at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. The groom proposed at his ranch on a cliff overlooking a stunning sunset. It was a Thursday night, and both of their families drove the next day to meet the couple and celebrate. “CC’s kindness and prioritization of others in her life continually reminds me to be less selfish in my own,” said the groom, Patrick Mays. The wedding, designed by Sara Faye Egan Events of Dallas, was highlighted by Three Branches Floral's spring color-laden décor. Abby Cavender, the maid of honor, wore a dress that was a custom color Swiss tulle and embellished with matching color fabric flowers. Also attending the bride were 19 bridesmaids: Charlotte Archer, Mattie Berry, Charlotte Burney, Lena Carr, Meg Carrigan, Paige Cavender, Isa Hetheringron, Claire Hodges, Julie King, Georgia Kuper, Marie Mays, Maggie Mays, Mary Alex Mizell, Juliana Newman, Mae Nixon, Lauren Prioleau, Paige Rahe, Anabelle Reade, and Gina Senese. The wedding evening had added meaning to the couple because the groom’s grandfather was able to attend the wedding and the reception before he passed away soon thereafter. The reception, held at The Argyle, was a buffet dinner. The bride’s specialty drink, a Dirty Martini with blue cheese olives, and the groom’s drink, a Smokey Old Fashioned, were favorites of the evening. The bride’s brother, Rob Cavender, sang the first dance of the evening, spotlighting the couple. Party on the Moon played throughout the reception and kept the party vibrant through the evening, until the after party at The Argyle in The Coates Garden. “The most special moment was after the ceremony,” shared the groom. “We went upstairs in the Argyle and had a private dinner before the chaos of the reception. It was incredibly special to have an opportunity to be present with just the two of us before celebrating with friends and family.” The bride added, “The confetti and fireworks during our exit were a surprise that we will always remember.”

One of the groom's favorite moments was the private sushi dinner the bride and groom enjoyed together during the cocktail hour before walking into the reception. This time together helped them savor the occasion before uniting with family and friends at the reception. Afterward, the bride's father surprised the couple with their favorite Texas musician, Pat Green, to play the first dance, as well as some of the bride and groom's families’ favorite songs to kick off the reception. Then, the Georgia Bridgewater Orchestra performed. The couple honeymooned in Mayakoba and Tulum, Mexico, and make their home in San Antonio, where the groom is employed by Merrill Lynch. In their spare time, they love to cook, try new restaurants, travel, and enjoy their golden retriever, Luna.

A Past with a Present for the Future The Argyle and Texas Biomedical Research Institute are part of the fabric of San Antonio and its rich history reaching back decades. The stately Argyle mansion was originally built in 1854 as the headquarters of a horse ranch that has, through a succession of owners, served as a grand hotel and home where guests have been lavished with entertainment and fine dining. When visionary oilman, philanthropist and adventurer Tom Slick, Jr. started Texas Biomed 80 years ago, his sister, Betty Moorman, suggested a club whose members would make an annual contribution to the Institute. Friday night’s reception was at Park House, while the Saturday night celebration was held at the Dallas Country Club. Saturday’s reception setting, with its Roaring 20s high glam atmosphere, had state-of-the-art lighting and entertainment. For the guests’ photogenic moments, the oversized spelling of the word LOVE, which was laden in white roses and greenery towered 12 feet as a selfie station. The cocktail napkins, bars, dance floor, all the way down to the yummy Bundt cakes had the signature K&J black and gold initials and theme, created by Kemble. The lobster mac n’ cheese and spareribs were a hit, according to the guests. DJ Mark Ridlen spun his tunes for Friday’s reception while The Dan Band and Jordan Kahn Orchestra entertained guests at Saturday evening’s event. “How fun it was to see our life-long friends, and many from the blocks where we grew up as children,” shared Kristin. “Many people felt that while they were seeing so many of their longtime friends, they had been transported back in time to when they were much younger. What a gift this was for everyone,” said James Hallam. The bride, who graduated from Baylor University, is employed at Cheetah Swift. The groom, who received his B.S. degree from St. Edward’s University and M.B.A from Southern Methodist University, is the vice president of Marketing and Legislative Affairs at Ben E. Keith Beverages. The couple, who have children from previous marriages, say they have mastered the three-day travel weekend. Some of their favorite getaways are Los Angeles, Miami, Washington D.C., and New York. They enjoy visiting Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica, and Punta Mita, Mexico, when they have extra time.

THE CEREMONY OF VICTORIA (ELISABETH) UHL AND ELKIN McGaughy Kleberg was held under the wide-open West Texas sky. Elisabeth is the daughter of Lorrie and Arthur Gustav Uhl III of San Antonio, and Elkin is the son of Julie and Scott Masterson Kleberg of Fort Worth. The groom asked for the bride’s hand in marriage when the couple and his family spent New Year’s in South Texas quail hunting. He surprised Elisabeth by proposing in the pasture. Soon after the proposal, her family unexpectedly appeared, and the families celebrated the impending nuptials together over dinner. The all-white wedding ceremony was held outside under the wide-open West Texas sky. Ivory and sand toned linens inspired by the landscape, anchored the dinner and reception design, and served as an earthy backdrop for the blue, green, yellow, and orange décor. The reception floral design, a collaboration between Cloche Events of San Antonio and Three Branches Floral of Dallas, was inspired by the region’s sunset and incorporated pink, yellow, and orange tones. The bride and their families chose the mother of the bride's family land, Pecan Creek Ranch, outside of San Angelo, as the venue for the ceremony and its nearby festivities. With the reception taking place in a remote part of West Texas, on a hill overlooking a magnificent vista, the scaffolding and tenting took two weeks to install. The stage backdrop was designed by Cloche Events, who oversaw the planning of all the wedding details. In fact, the Cloche team, led by Laura Nell Burton and Christin Gish, met the challenges of hosting a summertime ranch wedding with logistical expertise, creativity, grit and love, every step of the way. They were inspired by a trip to South America when they were dating, and it was where they fell in love with the brightly colored architecture with its pink Bougainvillea climbing vines.

The bride wore a gown previously worn by her mother, aunt, and late grandmother, and she collaborated with Coutures by Laura of Austin in the redesign. The veil, also an heirloom, had been worn by the family members, and her mother placed a sixpence in her shoe prior to the ceremony for good luck. Elisabeth’s Maid of Honor was Hilary Shaw, while her 11 bridesmaids were Maddy Canty, Marlee Cutbirth, Christina Thurmond, Sarah Friedman, Kat Hubbard, Julie King, Elizabeth Kleberg, Ali Koudelka, Sarah Beth Cole, Mallory Morris, and Madeline Thompson. Her nine other attendants were: Hailey Becker, Ellen Crow, Mary Elizabeth Fleming, Callie Fort, Catherine Murray, Rachel Theilmann, Elizabeth Waltrip, Jackie White, and Elizabeth Williamson. Elkin’s best man was Matt Kleberg, and his 13 groomsmen were: Will Bailey, Reed Brunette, Preston Burkett, Dillon Friedman, Robby Walls, Jeff Johnson, Lukin King, Parker LeCorgne, William Pipkin, Chase Prospere, Carter Thurmond, James Uhl, and Scott Uhl. His six other attendants were: Charlie Gentry, Perry Ginsburg, Cameron Horton, Reagen Hughes, Burke Kleinheinz, and Peter Ray. The rehearsal dinner was held at the Cactus Hotel in San Angelo and was catered by Bonnell’s of Fort Worth. The wedding was catered by the team at Perini Ranch Steakhouse of Buffalo Gap. The seated dinner featured their famous beef tenderloin and dusted shrimp. In addition, mini tequila bottle escort cards were implemented to direct the guests to place settings that were personalized with traditional blue and white Spanish Talavera tiles. Guests dined at gold and ivory place settings, with a mix of round and long tables adorned with candlelight and flowers. The couple left the reception in a 1987 Jeep Wagoneer that is an old family vehicle purchased by James (Jimmie) Powell and has been driven by three generations of the bride’s mother’s family. Both Elisabeth and Elkin Kleberg graduated from The University of Texas at Austin, where they now make their home. The bride is employed with Endeavor Real Estate Group, and the groom works at ACG Partners. The couple, who honeymooned in Italy, have many mutual interests, including spending time at their families' ranches, hunting, fishing, skiing, running, and exploring new places.

THE VIBRANT THEME FOR THE WEDDING of Clara Patricia Kelleher and John Blake Ostrander was a garden party with San Antonio flair, in shades of green, pink, and white, complete with Mexican star lanterns. The bride and groom are both San Antonio natives. Clara Kelleher is the daughter of Lisa and John Michael Kelleher, and John Ostrander is the son of Miriam and Ron Malek, and Chris Ostrander. The bride attended Texas Christian University, while the groom attended Texas Tech University and earned his degree from San Angelo State University. They had a five-year courtship and were married after an elevenmonth engagement. “John popped the question on a hike in Jackson Hole, Wyoming,” mused the bride, Clara Ostrander. “We hiked to the highest point at Teton Village. The reception, which followed the nuptials, was at The Argyle for the 620 guests. The seated buffet had plenty of food stations, including The Argyle’s famous nachos, potato puffs with caviar, seafood paella, lobster rolls, pepper bomb beef tenderloin, and fried quail, to name a few. The occasion’s libations contained a floral-filled champagne ice bar, espresso martinis adorned with the likeness of Eloise, the couple's French Bulldog, on the drink stirrers, and the groom’s favorite, a traditional Margarita. About the groom, the bride shared, “When we met, I thought John was the funniest guy I had ever known. He is still the life of the party, and I love that life will always be entertaining with him. Plus, he has the kindest heart.” The couple resides in San Antonio, where the bride is the jewelry buyer for Julian Gold, and the groom is the co-founder of Bexar Capital, a real estate investment firm. They visited South Africa for their honeymoon, and in their leisure hours, they love attending concerts around the Texas Hill Country and spending time at the bride’s family’s ranch.
