126. RAVISHING RIVIERA

Art and jewelry are a magical combination. Both evoke strong emotions and can inspire both the eye and heart. We’ve paired some of the best artists with our favorite fine jewelers to create an exceptional look at today’s inspiringly artful trends.

Amarillo-born Cyd Charisse may just be Texas’ favorite dancing movie star from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Although she was afflicted with polio as a child, she rose to fame with her smarts, talent, and beauty. Here’s an inside look at her career and Lone Star State upbringing.

As we all dive into summer, why not dive into the Mediterranean Sea while we’re at it? Getting back into the swing of things after postponing luxe international travel for the past two years, France is always a good idea.

EDITOR'S LETTER

Just Picture It

Recently, while screening the new series on Netflix, The Andy Warhol Diaries, based on the 80s bestseller, it’s remarkable how much has changed in the contemporary art world of Warhol’s day and how much it has well, not. After all, deep down, don’t we all want to discover The Next Big Thing, find artful pieces we can’t live without, and perhaps have an option of a potential return on the investment if we should decide to sell? Investment in art is the most subjective shell game there is. The advice from most collectors and gallerists? Buy what you love. Rinse and repeat. In fact, I’d wager to predict that in our era of when a moment can become a movement, expect the digital NFT art realm to explode with lucrative possibilities to own and track the provenance of future masterpieces. In that case, in a twist of events, life would imitate art instead of the other way around. And, it would make for one heck of a movement.

36

In this issue, as we move forward and summer refreshes us with sundrenched opportunities, you’ll see plenty of shining examples of optimistically vibrant art, jewelry, fashion, and stylish ways of living your best life as things get back to normal again. Spending time with family, friends and traveling to make up for the lost time becomes a priority. Additionally, our feature on the French Riviera by Ashley Dobson should inspire your Mediterranean desires like never before. We’re confident your summer will be all that you want it to be, from pool to coast to exploring foreign ports of call. So, be sure to pack an issue of Society Texas with you to stay in the know. The first one into the water gets to yell Marco Polo. We’ll see you at the swim-up bar.

AS THE SEEDS WERE PLANTED AND THE STARS ALIGNED, welcome to our annual Art+Jewelry issue. For admirers and collectors of both, we realize that canvas and carats can be very subjective. Jewelry is always a correct choice, and spoiler alert: in 2023, when the remake of 1963’s Cleopatra, starring Gal Gadot, debuts, expect a flurry of massive jewels to become more popular than ever. Plus, the old adage art is long, life is short, seems more accurate than ever thanks to the ongoing robust interest in traditional art, and its newcomer little sister, NFT (Nonfungible Tokens) digital art bought with cryptocurrency. Both have set the auction and technology worlds on fire. With records continuing to be surpassed in both realms, collectors can continue to be buckled in for the wild rides ahead.

DIVULGE

Glamour Girl Houston native-turned Los Angeleno-turned Austinite Kelly Frye is taking the world by storm. Her personal style, complemented with a mane of stunning red hair, has this actor creating a stir while starring in her latest series, Disney’s Secrets of Sulphur Springs. Our Lance Avery Morgan caught up with her to learn more about her secrets to success. My favorite iPhone wake-up song is…Ludovico Einaudi’s Nuvole Bianche. It’s what I like to start my day with, and it was playing when I walked down the aisle at our recent Rothko Chapel wedding. Such a moving song. Best career advice I’ve received is…shy doesn’t work. Expect the very best out of the situation you’re walking into, and smile. Always pay it forward. Three qualities that got me where I am today are…joy, a positive outlook, and resilience. I made my first dollar by…appearing in a Titleist commercial with Sergio Garcia in Houston when I was 16. I earned my SAG card on that job, and it was my first taste of Hollywood and a professional set. Kelly Frye. Photography by Eddie Brakha

Last thing I binge/marathon watched…Inventing Anna—whoa. Book that left a lasting impression on me…the book I constantly recommend to people is Patti Smith’s Just Kids. Her writing is absolutely beautiful, and the storytelling about New York in the 80s transported me there with her. First album I bought was…Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill. The beauty essential you’d have to pry out of my cold, dry hands is...Koh Gen Do aqua foundation–the best in the game. NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer for no-makeup days. And you will never see me without fresh sugar rose lip balm. My style icon is…Audrey Hepburn. Her style is timeless and classic. Present-day, I love what Zendaya has been putting out there. Her style is fun, classic, and bold. My personal style signifier is…my hair. The red hair got me teased as a child, but it’s my super-power as an adult. For clothing, I love statement shoes and handbags with skinny jeans and a tied-up silk button-down. That’s my go-to day-to-day look. In my fridge, you will always find…emergency champagne for celebrations. I love anticipating happy moments to celebrate. If I could compete in an Olympic sport, it would be… figure skating. I was a figure skater growing up, and I would love to have achieved that level. Some of my favorite childhood memories were at the ice rink. My perfect day would end…watching the sunset over a beautiful vista having sundowners, as they call them, in England with my (British) husband, art advisor Nick Campbell.

EVOLV E

Things Are Looking Up Dear Etiquette Guy, AS OUR TRAVELS BECOME MORE ROBUST AGAIN, IS IT insensitive to post my own social media photos? Hitting The Road Dear Robust Traveler, Up, up, and away has finally returned. Posting photos on social media is a great way to share the joy of your adventures with others. We live vicariously through others’ joy and love to see our friends thriving! However, as you suggest, it can be overdone. Always look at your intention before posting anything–a photo or words. If you’re not using the platform for self-aggrandizement or some other unseemly reason, share away. If you enjoy seeing how much fun your friends are having, most likely, they will, too. Dear Etiquette Guy, A college friend, who lives in another city, is getting married this fall. There will be many bridal showers, yet I can’t attend them all due to logistics. Should I send gifts for the ones when I am unable to participate? Wedding Goer Dear Wedding Goer, Isn’t it wonderful that large weddings can once again take to the stage? For once-in-a-lifetime celebrations, to borrow a phrase from Downton Abbey: nothing succeeds like excess. Nonetheless, with multiple showers, scheduling can be understandably difficult. If you are invited to more than one shower for the same bride, try to attend at least one. If you’ve received an invitation, your presence is truly wanted. When you accept an invitation to a shower, you should bring a gift or send one ahead whether you attend or not. There is, however, no obligation to accept every invitation you receive. If you send your regrets, you are not required to send a gift, but the option is still on the table. Follow your heart. Dear Etiquette Guy, Do I have to open a host or birthday gift that I might receive, right

42

Our Etiquette Guy Jay Remer is with you every step of the way to help determine the most appropriate course of good manners. After all, etiquette in social situations were created to help everyone feel as comfortable as possible.

then and there, or may I wait until later?

Lucky Recipient

Dear Lucky, Allow the circumstances to guide you in making your decision. There is no rule obligating you to anything in this case. Giving and receiving gifts should come from the heart. Therefore, I recommend listening to your heart more than your head. Choice is liberating, yet try to read how the other person is feeling. If they insist that you open the gift, try to make the time and space to do so. Because this can create an awkward moment, be cognizant when you are in this position–try to resist the insist. Dear Etiquette Guy, I recently went on a business trip to the West Coast and was shocked at the level of both professional and personal flakiness. How do I respond when a colleague or friend simply cancels a meeting or meal at the last minute? On The Ball Dear Ball in Your Court, Exacerbated by the excruciating and ongoing demands that COVID19 extracted from us on all levels, many entrepreneurs and business executives no longer perform as they once did–personally or professionally. Moreover, given the recent departure of millions of people from the US workforce, of their own volition, the way we do business moving forward must change dramatically. The old methods of power and control will transform into new inclusive and diverse ones where mutual respect and trust, a fair value-exchange agreement, common sense, and following The Golden Rule will prevail. While this transformation takes place, we may need to stretch our flexibility muscles. I recommend you hold people accountable while being as flexible as you can. Your time is every bit as valuable as theirs. A gentle reminder never hurts. We all must become better at picking our battles. Compassion goes a long way in keeping those muscles from seizing up.

How To Show Up For True Authenticity Most of us can utilize the life, executive, leadership, and personal transformational coaching that our new business and life coach columnist Angie McCourt offers. Here, she shares her insight on how we can embrace our true, stylish authenticity...in the office and beyond.

GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION IN MY BOOK, LOVE YOUR GIFTS: PERMISSION TO REVOLUTIONIZE Authenticity in the Workplace, I target the many limitations that can impact how we show up in the workplace as our authentic selves. These constraints can impact our elevated gifts and deter us from reaching our full potential. So, let’s see how to clear out what isn’t working, so we can activate these innate gifts.

be different but to be in the truth of what you enjoy, doing what best represents who you are, your values, beliefs, and desires.

The clearing out involves reducing and eventually eliminating judgments, comparisons, competing in unhealthy ways, limiting beliefs, overcompensating, and our inner critic. This also applies to our authenticity in personal relationships, with friends, the community, on social media, our spirituality, and within our families. In fact, if we are not feeling connected to our authentic selves, it may be causing a disconnect from our joy, which can affect our interactions with others or in a desire to be fully ourselves, speak our truth, show up in our authentic skin, and showcase our gifts and talents. It can also affect our style, taste in food, art, and décor in this drive to be our authentic selves.

We struggle between sharing too much about ourselves out of fear this knowledge will be held against us somehow, which leads to unhappiness and disconnection. So, do what feels comfortable by allowing your authenticity to shine when you show up.

We are often influenced by others, including friends, colleagues, and current trends, regarding what we should wear, eat, support, and appreciate. However, these areas are a great place to be your authentic self. Today many people wear clothes based on their mood, type of activity, or how they want to show up versus being influenced by others. We see fashion trends shifting everywhere compared to 10 to 20 years ago when they were very predictable.

2. Discover two limiting beliefs restricting authenticity (Example: you are expected to show up in a certain way, or others won’t respect you). Challenge the truth of those beliefs. When has this happened in the past? What happens if the limiting beliefs are not accurate? Then, come up with your new truth statement.

Instead, many people today wear clothes based on their mood, type of activity, or how they want to show up versus being influenced by others. We listen to different types of music based on how we feel or want to feel. We view jewelry as symbolic and even as wearable art showcasing it according to how we wish to present ourselves. The style each of us has is becoming more about our individuality than how others expect us to be or how others are showing up. To be authentic is not to try to

46

There is often a fear of judgment, rejection, or disapproval based on our status, job, title, or responsibilities that hold us back from being our authentic selves. Take a moment to think about the unique qualities you have and don’t share with others and ask yourself why not? This specialness might be a talent, interest, gift, or even a parenting role.

THE MAGIC OF THREES Try these three exercises to allow yourself to break through the blocks that may be holding you back from bringing your authentic self into your everyday life. 1. Assess your values (what are the top five values you live by today?) and fully align to them throughout all areas of your life.

3. Stop comparing yourself to others. This can be easier said than done, and it takes self-awareness to catch when this is happening. Reducing time on social media can help. Be grateful for what you have, who you are, and who is in your life currently. Support others in their success, too. Then, check in with yourself regularly to see how you connect with your authentic self and what that looks and feels like to you. Finally, acknowledge how your authenticity influences the impact you can make at home, work, in the community, and the world.

TOO British? True to its legend, it’s tough to beat a luxury British car for style. Our man-about-globe, Michael Satterfield of The Gentleman Racer takes the new Jaguar F-Type P450 Coupe out for a spin on some country roads to get a handle on its drivability. Love ensues. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE GENTLEMAN RACER

GOOD, THEN GREAT Few new cars genuinely get me excited these days. Outside of a handful of exotics, there aren’t many obtainable cars that I would describe as lust-worthy. Most companies today have resigned themselves to building just good cars. In fact, it is nearly impossible to buy a bad car in 2022. Like Jim Collins says, “Good is the enemy of great,” and there are far too many good cars in this world. But now and again (when the accountants aren’t looking), a great car can sneak through. Ladies and gentlemen, the Jaguar F-Type P450 is one of them. Now some might say a car starting at $69,900 isn’t really every person’s car, and a sports coupe like a Mustang is more obtainable than a Jaguar. But when you consider this Jaguar is within $6,500 of a welloptioned Mustang Mach 1, and around $6,500 less than the GT500 (before markup), the value of the Jaguar shows. It is at its core a muscle car like the Mustang, but with a better tailor—fully loaded, including destination fees. The F-Type I am driving and testing comes in at $86,200.

The other obvious comparison is the Aston Martin Vantage, which, if equipped with the classic Aston grille, is a very handsome car, too. But the baby Aston starts at $139,000, and when you tack on the options, you’ll find most Vantages come in at between $175,000-$220,000. In shopping around Aston Martin dealers in Texas, the least expensive 2022 Vantage in stock is $170,086. So if you ordered a standard P450, you would save $100,000 and still be driving an exceptional, limitedproduction British sports car. THAT’S MY TYPE Buying an F-Type means, you are buying into an elite club because despite its good looks and sporting heritage, Jaguar is still a boutique company. They only build around 2,000 F-Types for the U.S. market a year, making them far more rare than the Porsche 911 or Chevrolet Corvette. While most reviews focus on pricing, 0-60 M.P.H. times, and cubic square feet of cargo space, most of those things don’t matter much in the real world, do they? There will always be a cheaper, faster car or one that is able to fit more golf clubs. So, buying an F-Type is a cont'd...

lifestyle choice, more akin to buying a luxury item than a mode of daily transportation. Sliding behind the wheel, the F-Type feels bespoke. In a bold color with a tan leather interior, it looks the part of the quintessential British sports car. For me, the F-Type is an escape pod. Just slip on some driving gloves, point it in the direction of the countryside, and dial in your favorite driving music. If you had a bad day, few cars help make everything right in the world, like the F-Type. Pushing the start button brings the 444 hp, 5.0-liter supercharged V8 to life with a delightful rumble seldom heard in suburbia in these days of electrification. The F-Type P450 drives like a car with far more horsepower, and with peak power coming on fast at around 2,500 RPM, this Jag is a joy to operate on a twisty country road. Tapping the paddles, turning into a corner, and rolling back onto the throttle, it feels like a classic sports car. Almost as if it is channeling all of Jaguar’s racing heritage with every turn of the wheel. Plus, it just happens to have paddle shifters and dynamic mode. It is impossible not to smile while driving the F-Type on a great road. THE OPEN ROAD Blasting out across the causeway over Lake Livingston towards Point

Blank with the windows down is the kind of therapy one can only understand through experience. Ripping down TX-156 through the Sam Houston National Forest and taking the long way home, with the sound of the exhaust echoing off the trees, my Zen was broken only by the chirp of the radar detector, reminding me to check the speed limit. The F-Type wants to go fast, and it is easy to let the speedometer climb. The only thing that would have made this day better is if I had gone to a racetrack to experience the full brilliance of the F-Type. Pulling into any small downtown, the car draws attention among the Ford F150s and Chevrolet Suburbans. “Is it the James Bond car?” one gent asks. I tell him no, it is a Jaguar, and I let him take a seat inside. He especially likes the optional glass roof but thinks it is too fancy for him. Even at the local country club, where the parking lot is a greyscale sea of Porsche 911s, and Mercedes AMGs, the blue coupe makes a statement. Its taut proportions look refined when parked next to some of these. Perhaps that is what I like most about the Jaguar. It’s exotic, yet not in the garish orange Lamborghini way. It has an understated elegance that many cars simply cannot offer in a practical package for daily use. With that in mind, I would suggest you only drive the P450 if you are genuinely ready to buy one. Because once you do, you’re not going to want to leave the dealership without one.

Love Is In The Air Heartfelt Debut Party for Caroline Kelleher And Maggie Kelleher By Jake Gaine | Photography by Jenna-Beth Lyde

THE SETTING: Valentine’s Day was the chosen theme and timing for this colorful San Antonio debutante party. The honorees Caroline Kelleher, a graduate of The University of Texas and the daughter of Lisa and Mike Kelleher, and Maggie Kelleher, a graduate of Southern Methodist University and the daughter of Kathy and David Kelleher, made sure the theme of love was in the air. The cousins and their families welcomed guests to a red-turfed entrance under a pathway of bronze star-shaped light fixtures hung from the trees at The Argyle. THE STYLE: A red, six-foot LOVE sculpture, inspired by artist Robert Indiana, greeted the attendees. The main tent entrance included a red, white and pink floral wall with the honorees’ names in neon lights. A large red heart made from over one thousand fresh long-stemmed roses adorned the back side of the wall. Continuing into the main tent overhead were hanging structures adorned with hundreds of ribbons tied with inverted red long-stemmed roses. The floral ambience was orchestrated by Danny Cuellar and his team at Trinity Flowers, so there was no shortage of social media photo opportunities with it as a backdrop. The guest libations included a heart-shaped espresso martini ice luge, and a White Russian bar, as an homage to the Kelleher brothers’ favorite movie, The Big Lebowski.

Maggie Kelleher and Caroline Kelleher

Red Southwest Airlines Co. heart-shaped drink stirrers honored the debutantes’ late legendary grandfather, Herb Kelleher, the airline’s founder. Guests grazed on exquisite Argyle cuisine that included a sushi and raw bar (oysters, crab legs and shrimp) with sparkling and regular sake options. Lobster bisque, tenderloin, chicken-fried quail, mini chickenpot pies with heart-shaped cut outs in the crust were served. Champagne and desserts of biscotti, chocolate-covered strawberries and mini berry crumbles were found at other stations. Heart-shaped Linzer cookies with raspberry filling were offered as party favors. The dance floor remained packed into the night with live music by the talented Professor D Band.

Luck Of The Irish Harry Ransom Center Hosts VIP Opening Of Women And The Making Of Joyce’s Ulysses Exhibit By Rob Giardinelli | Photography by Chad Wadsworth

THE SETTING: A picture-perfect spring evening at The University of Texas' Harry Ransom Center in Austin was the recent setting of the VIP Opening Party of the much-anticipated exhibition, Women and the Making of Joyce’s Ulysses. The exhibit celebrates the 100th anniversary of legendary literary modernist author James Joyce and specifically highlights the previously unacknowledged role women had in making his literary masterpiece come to life. In total, over one hundred of the city’s most notable literary and artistic patrons turned out for this special evening THE STYLE: The crowd began the evening sipping cocktails and socializing with many conversations abuzz surrounding the legendary work of Joyce on display. Additionally, patrons could go back in time to the early 20th century and personally press their own postcard featuring an image of Joyce as a keepsake for the evening. Guests were then treated to informal talks by the show’s leaders, including exhibit curator Dr. Clare Hutton, who dazzled the audience with her passion and knowledge of Joyce’s work. After the talks, patrons were able to view the 150-pieces in the exhibit, with Hutton personally taking several individuals on personal tours of the manuscripts, page proofs, and accounting logs from benefactor Harriet Shaw Weaver. These items perfectly demonstrate how women were instrumental in the making of one of the most important literary works of the 20th century. THE PURPOSE: The Harry Ransom Center is a world-renowned archive collection of significant artists and writers with over 42 million manuscripts, five million photographs, and over 100,000 works of art in its archives, including many from the world’s most renowned artists, including E.E. Cummings, Robert De Niro, Albert Einstein, Frida Kahlo, and Jack Kerouac among many others. The audience was treated to words from the event leaders, followed by a delectable, multi-course meal where guests had the opportunity to enjoy the food and company of their dining companions. The festivities then moved to the main event of the evening, where both honorees had a touching video tribute from influential Texans. THE SETTING: The McNay Art Museum’s gala, Dining with the Masters: Georgia O’Keeffe and American Modernism welcomed 200 friends and supporters returning to the museum for a gala after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The elegant evening unveiled an exclusive preview of Georgia O’Keeffe and American Modernism, a focus exhibition that brings together masterpieces from the McNay’s collection–including Evening Star No. 5 and From the Plains I–with key loans from the Whitney Museum of American Art and sister institutions within and beyond Texas. The exhibition is the first substantial presentation of O’Keeffe’s work at the McNay since the landmark O’Keeffe and Texas in 1998. The masterful exhibit featuring artworks by O’Keeffe’s contemporaries, including Marsden Hartley, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Helen Torr, presents an innovative, inclusive celebration befitting the first modern art museum in Texas. THE STYLE: The Leeper Auditorium was stunning with the color palette looking as if it came directly from an O’Keeffe painting. David Garcia and his team from Statue of Design created stunning centerpieces and floral chandeliers that floated above the guest's tables. Don Strange of Texas treated guests to a sumptuous dinner. Many of the recipes for the evening came directly from Georgia O’Keeffe’s kitchen, including the pecan butterball cookies, which were given to guests as they departed. After dinner, guests made their way to the AT&T Lobby for dessert and music by DJ Despeinada. THE PURPOSE: The mother and daughter duo, Betty Lou Sheerin and Kate Sheerin, chaired the gala, the museum’s largest annual fundraiser. The title sponsors were Neiman Marcus San Antonio and Valero. Proceeds from the gala benefit the McNay’s education, exhibition, and conservation programs, enabling the museum to continue its mission of engaging a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts.

THE SETTING: The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center recently celebrated 80 Years of Making Cancer History at the Toyota Center to the sounds of The Beach Boys...and to the tune of more than $10.5 million raised to end cancer, surpassing an initial goal of $8 million. Actor John Stamos emceed the one-of-a-kind concert, which included artists Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, The Commodores, and Generation Radio featuring Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts and Jason Scheff of Chicago. The event raised awareness and funds for rare cancers in support of the musicians’ dear friend, rare cancer survivor Jeffrey Foskett, a vocalist, musician, and arranger who earned his credentials performing pop classics with The Beach Boys, America, and Jeff Beck. THE STYLE: The floor at the Toyota Center was a far cry from what VIPs are used to at a Houston Rockets game. Instead of folding chairs and fluorescent lights, luxury lounge seating–think plush velvet sofas and leather club chairs¬–covered the arena. All eyes were focused on the blue lighting setting ablaze MD Anderson’s 80th Anniversary design that stretched across the 60-foot stage. Beachy floral arrangements, a nod to the evening’s muchanticipated entertainment, added a festive touch to the pods that hosted 20 to 30 VIPs. These special guests wore concert credentials around their necks, which contributed to the excitement in the air about what was soon to come. These passes also permitted access to the several lounges located throughout the Toyota Center. THE PURPOSE: The evening featured almost too many memorable moments to count, yet the night’s highlight needed little build-up to appreciate. In 2018, Jeffrey Foskett lost his voice while touring with The Beach Boys. Then, in early 2019, he was diagnosed with anaplastic thyroid cancer, a rare malignancy. He received a grim prognosis at a California hospital before seeking a second opinion at MD Anderson, where a multidisciplinary team devised a treatment approach that reduced his cancer. His performance that evening brought tears to the eyes of the 2,500 guests who jumped to their feet to cheer for him. Stamos joined Foskett and The Beach Boys on tunes such as Kokomo, Barbara Ann, Surfin’ USA, and more. Since opening its doors more than eight decades ago, MD Anderson has cared for hundreds of thousands of patients facing cancers both common and rare. The institution remains one of the world’s most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education, and prevention.

THE STYLE: The Cosmic Cowboy chic attire assured a welcoming vibe for all who attended, which could be felt as partygoers ascended the stairs to The ACL Moody Theatre terrace. Guests mingled, caught up with friends old and new, and shared their favorite Lions Course tales... all the while wearing various interpretations of western attire. The festivities then continued on the ground floor level of the theatre for the main program. As guests dined on delectable family-style barbecue, they were treated to a series of touching tributes of how the Lions Course has positively impacted the Austin community since its founding in 1924. Next came a spirited live auction, which featured highly coveted items including a Masters experience with Masters Tournament of Champions’ Ben Crenshaw and Sergio Garcia, diamond jewelry courtesy of Korman Fine Jewelry, and an unforgettable Aspen package. The evening was capped off with a star-studded concert featuring captivating performances by Ray Benson, Lukas Nelson, and Eric Church, as well as a special appearance by Jimmie Vaughan. THE PURPOSE: The event raised nearly $1 million for the Muny Conservancy to preserve and enhance Austin’s Lions Municipal Golf Course. This is so it can become a central green space destination for Austinites, both old and new, to enjoy for generations to come.

Standing Tall Annual Destiny Award Luncheon Benefits St. Philip’s School By Cynthia Smoot | Photography by Tim Heitman

THE SETTING: More than 1,200 guests filled the Landmark Ballroom at the Downtown Dallas Hyatt Regency recently for a big personality...and even bigger cause. St. Philip’s School and Community Center welcomed Basketball Hall-of-Famer and cultural icon Shaquille O’Neal as its guest speaker for the 22nd annual Destiny Awards luncheon. It featured a comedic and heartfelt conversation between O’Neal and NBA Champion and former Mavericks coach Avery Johnson. O’Neal shared that excellence is not a singular act with St. Philip’s students, who also performed at the luncheon. Also, Dr. Bobby Lyle was honored with the Mona & David Munson Humanitarian Award for his outstanding commitment to the school. THE STYLE: Standing at 7 feet 1 inch, no one stood taller or caused greater excitement than the guest of honor. Before the luncheon, O’Neal greeted fans and engaged in a quick game of hoops with the St. Philip’s students. He also toured a dynamic student showcase that included sports trivia, the math of basketball, and more. It was no surprise the event was packed with friends of St. Philip’s, donors, and sponsors from across the metroplex. THE PURPOSE: Pete Chillan served as the event chair. The St. Philip’s School and Community Center luncheon raised more than $1.2 million. These funds will facilitate the expansion of St. Philip’s School in the 2022-2023 school year. St. Philp’s mission is to develop each student's mind, body, and soul. The school is committed to excellence in academics and community service.

CHARISSE By Michele Hogan

DYNAMITE

Party Girl, 1958

BY LORI DURAN | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ARCHIVAL MAY•JUNE 2022

B E A U T I F U L

When Amarillo-born Cyd Charisse became a movie star in the 1950s, no one who knew her in Texas was surprised. She was a strong-willed woman whose combination of brains, beauty, and talent made her one of the era’s most popular silver screen favorites. From overcoming a polio-inflicted childhood to becoming one of the most prolific dancing stars ever, her story one is of luck, determination, and triumph. DANCING LADY NO ONE GLIDED ACROSS THE SCREEN QUITE LIKE native Texan Cyd Charisse. When I saw her dance with Fred Astaire in Silk Stockings or with Gene Kelley in Singin’ in the Rain, she made it look effortless. I never realized she had to overcome polio as a child and had persevered and recovered from the dreaded affliction with childhood dance lessons...and then she kept dancing the rest of her life to the delight of millions. She was always in step with her hoofing talent, and was a beautiful representative of professionalism, grace, and strength. These qualities led her to a life in show business, and she became one of the most sought-after performers in Hollywood. In fact, she danced with the top male dancers of her time. Charisse described dancing with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly as dancing with “two of the greatest dancing personalities.” Even though the studios' interest in musicals was waning by the end of the 1950s, and since her strength was in dancing, her options were diminished. In the 1960s, Charisse moved on to other opportunities by working in television and even did some stage work with her husband. She inspired others with her victory over polio and dedication to her craft which she executed so beautifully throughout her well-lived life. Cyd Charisse was born Tula Ellice Finklea in Amarillo in 1922 and was named after her aunt Tulla and uncle Ellis. The panhandle town of Amarillo is about as Texas as it gets. According to the book, The Two of Us by Tony Martin and Cyd Charisse (as told to Dick Kleiner), Charisse’s

great-great paternal grandmother, Matilda Smith, had been one of the area’s earliest settlers. The family struck it rich with oil, yet the riches did not last beyond a generation. Her father, Ernest Finklea, owned and operated a jewelry store, while her mother, Lela Finklea, ran the household in which Tula grew up. The loving and stable upper-middle-class home also included Charisse’s younger brother, who called her Sid instead of Sis. The nickname stuck, with the eventual spelling becoming the now familiar, Cyd.

When she contracted polio as a six-year-old, her family had her take ballet as part of her recovery to build back her underdeveloped and thinned muscles. In The Two of Us, Charisse said, “one side of my back was slightly atrophied.” Her father loved ballet and encouraged his daughter to excel in it and according to Charisse, whenever a ballet troupe came to Dallas, the family made the trek to see them, a journey of 365 miles across the mostly rural highways of the era. As luck would have it, Charisse truly loved and continued to dance for the rest of her life, gracing screens across the world. She was a gifted dancer who was driven to practice daily, and as a pre-teenager, she was sent to California for more intensive dance instructions. In 1934, as a 12-year-old, she joined the touring troupe, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, where cont'd...

she was beautiful dynamite. When you dance with her, you stayed danced. | Fred Astaire she was trained as a ballerina in the Russian tradition. This is also where she met her first husband, Nico Charisse and in 1939, at the age of 17, they were married. They opened and operated a Los Angeles area ballet school together. In 1942, the young couple had a son, Nicky. And just before World War II, Charisse and her husband were obtaining mostly uncredited dancing roles in Hollywood movies. Unfortunately, their marriage didn’t last, and they divorced in 1947, but that wasn’t the only thing about her life that changed. MOVIE STAR MAGIC The motion picture studios she went to seeking a contract liked everything about her except the spelling of her first name, so they modified Sid to “Cyd.” Charisse remembered later, “I had no delusions about myself. I couldn't act...I had never acted. So how could I be a movie star?” She gradually received more parts in various movies and in 1946 signed an exclusive contract with MGM. The studio was the king of Hollywood musicals then, and their slogan boasted All The Stars In Heaven. She shared with close friends at the time, “Ballet is a closed world and very rigid; MGM was a fairyland. You'd walk down the lot, seeing all these fabulous movies being made with the greatest talent in the world. It was a dream.” That same year she landed a dancing part in the successful film, Till the Clouds Roll By (1946).

124

On that set, she would meet her second husband, crooner Tony Martin, who also starred in the film. They married in 1948, and by 1950, Charisse had two young sons, a new husband, and a stellar career. She was talented, drop-dead

gorgeous, and possessed a slender physique standing 5’6” tall. She seemed taller when she danced because her legs, once wasted by polio, were long and slender. Moviegoers idolized her as well as other famed dancers of the era. Samantha Bonds, of the James Bonds film series, once said, “It has always been a dream of mine to be Ginger Rogers or Cyd Charisse.” She was one of the few who danced with both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly in motion pictures. Charisse was truly electrifying on-screen with her nearly perfect size 8 figure (in today’s terms, a size 4) that was accentuated with a wasp waist and gamine-like legs. She was a major presence in several important musicals of the 1950s and was often displayed in scenes of dreaminess, aloofness, or elegance. Charisse didn’t have a singing voice, so her vocals were dubbed, and movies roles emphasized her dancing, especially during the 1950s golden age of musicals. Some of her bestknown movies were Singin’ In The Rain, The Band Wagon, Brigadoon, Deep In My Heart, It’s Always Fair Weather, and Silk Stockings. Her dancing was so provocative that Charisse recounted much later, “The censors were always there when I was on the set. When I was held up in a lift in Deep in My Heart... they were up on ladders to see if I was properly covered.” In 1952, Singin’ In The Rain was one of the most successful movies of the year and provided Charisse with her initial monumental break into show business. There was a $5 million insurance policy on her talented legs, which was also likely a publicity move at the time. In the film, she made her initial impact by playing an aloof, beautiful woman who is then melted by the love of “the right man.” She has a vampy, torridly memorable scene dancing with Gene Kelly while wearing a slinky green dress accessorized with a long cigarette holder. They dance again in the film while she is wearing an elegant white dress in a dream-like setting. The film’s release established her as one of Hollywood’s most glamorous talents. In 1953, The Band Wagon provided her first leading role. Her character could not fall in love with Fred Astaire until she abandoned her high art pretensions. She stole the show when she danced in it, wearing red sequins. Charisse would later look back on her career and share, “I can watch Astaire anytime. I don't think he ever made a wrong move. He was a perfectionist. He would work on a few bars for hours until it was just the way he wanted it. Gene

was the same way. They both wanted perfection, even though they were completely different personalities.” Charisse, standing at 5’6” to Kelly’s 5’7” and Astaire’s 5’9”, were matches made in heaven. In 1954’s Brigadoon, another tremendous hit for MGM, Charisse played the woman Gene Kelly’s character loves. She lives in a town, Brigadoon, which materializes only once every 100 years. Charisse later said this was her favorite Gene Kelly musical and commented on the difference between Kelly and Astaire as dancing partners afterward. “My husband could always tell whether I'd been dancing with Kelly or Astaire that day,” Charisse mused. “If I was black and blue, it was Gene. And if it was Fred, I didn't have a scratch.” In 1955’s It’s Always Fair Weather, her character had encyclopedic memory that intimidated Gene Kelly’s character, and she was haughty until corrected on Shakespeare. In 1957, she stretched her strengths further in Silk Stockings as a beautiful but ice-cold Soviet commissar. Even in a plain gray suit and playing the part of a stern Russian communist, Charisse was spellbinding. In the privacy of her hotel room, she twirled the luxurious silk stockings she had obtained to replace her communist uniform’s black tights. At first, her character doesn’t believe in dancing, but she ultimately capitulates to the male lead character, played by Astaire, and to the city of Paris. NEW CHAPTERS UNFOLDED However, movie musicals had passed their peak when Charisse’s character melted for Astaire’s in the late 1950s. Silk Stockings turned out to be her last major musical and due to MGM’s change in administration from movie kingpin Louis B. Mayer, budgets were slashed and there was no priority placed on musicals. Unfortunately, musicals were her forte, and she was deemed expendable in an era of changing movie consumer tastes. “If I had to give up either acting or dancing, I’d choose to keep dancing,” said Charise. She then appeared in dramatic roles to strong reviews, like Party Girl (1958), costarring with Robert Taylor, and Two Weeks in Another Town (1962), sharing the screen with Kirk Douglas. She was cast in Marilyn Monroe’s last film, Something’s Gotta Give (unfinished, 1962), since Monroe requested Charisse play the secondary female lead of the 20th Century Fox film, as an interesting sidenote to

Hollywood history. The two enjoyed an easy camaraderie, and since they shared the same publicity representative, Charisse and Monroe had always been professionally supportive of each other. Charisse appreciated all her peers, and the feeling was mutual. Fred Astaire was known to have said of Charisse and their many dance scenes, “She was beautiful dynamite. When you dance with her, you stayed danced.” In 1959, Charisse and her husband, Tony Martin, starred in an unsold television pilot for a family dramatic series, Night People. Martin played a nightclub singer, and Charisse was his spouse. After offers for movie roles declined in the 1960s, Charisse acted on the dinner theater circuit and made guest appearances on variety TV and in European films. Starting in 1974, the That’s Entertainment film series premiered celebrating old Hollywood movies, including the MGM musicals where Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse had danced together. Their dance number, Dancing in the Dark, was a pivotal part of That’s Entertainment and remains an unforgettable dance scene for both Astaire and Charisse. In 1976, Charisse teamed with her crooner husband, Tony Martin, for a series of successful nightclub revues.

Cyd Charisse, 1990s

“I've done about everything in show business except perform on Broadway. I always hoped that I would one day perform at the World Series of show business. If anybody tells you they're not intimidated, they're lying,” said Charisse years before landing her Broadway debut, at 70, in Grand Hotel in 1992. In later years, Charisse and Martin continued to stay in the social swirl in both New York and Los Angeles. In 2006 President George W. Bush presented Charisse with the National Medal of the Arts and Humanities, the highest official U.S. honor available in the arts. Sadly, Cyd Charisse passed away in 2008 of a heart attack at the age of 86, yet her films live on with Turner Classic Movies, on DVD and streaming. She was the consummate professional until the end and shared with Gene Kelly when he asked what she might eventually want written on her gravestone. Without hesitation, she replied it would be: People sometimes had a problem placing her face, but they never forgot her legs.

Ravishing RIVIERA

126

This sun-drenched shore has beckoned the famous and infamous for centuries. Here our girl-about-globe Ashley Dobson shares the allure of the French Riviera’s history... as well as the latest trends and tips for this hot destination.

Maria Callas and Princess Grace, 1961

CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION The only international airport in the Riviera is in Nice, France. As the largest city on the Côte d’Azur, Nice makes the perfect home base for your trip. We arrived late in the evening and headed straight to our hotel, which overlooked the crystal-clear water. There is nothing better than waking up to the soft sound of Mediterranean waves crashing upon the shore. We began our first full day by enjoying coffee on our hotel room balcony, and strolling down the Promenade des Anglais on our way to Old Town. You could be forgiven for spending the majority of your time in Nice on the Promenade; the views are spectacular, and it feels as though the ocean is actually calling to you. But there is so much more to see. We left the Promenade for the Cours

taking in the entire coastline of the stunning Côte d'Azur, we finally pull up to the grand façade of the Monte Carlo Casino. Dressed to the nines in a tuxedo and long fitted gown, we walked up the red carpet, had our photos taken inside, and then made our way to the bar to grab a drink—shaken, not stirred.

Did I just describe James Bond’s night out or my husband and me on his annual birthday trip? Instead of a party, we take a trip together to celebrate each year. But choosing the right location for the perfect birthday trip can sometimes be a challenge. It needs to have the right blend of relaxation, sights to see—but not too many—and a place to properly celebrate. This year it needed to be even more special because my husband, Cameron, was turning another decade older, and we needed to ring in his milestone birthday in style. The French Riviera delivered on all of these requirements—and more.

Saleya pedestrian street in Old Town and spent some time shopping in Nice’s daily market. Striped awnings stretched over stands overflowing with fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, baked goods, and handmade items for sale. Of course, we couldn’t resist the fresh pastries, and we also picked up some lavender-scented soaps made in neighboring Provence. The Côte d'Azur is nothing short of inspiring with its unique architecture, stunning water, and fields of lavender, and we are far from the only people who felt that energy. Artists have flocked to the region for centuries, and the Riviera features more than 100 museums to prove it. Twelve of these museums are dedicated to a single artist who worked in the Riviera, Marc Chagall. The Musée Marc Chagall houses the artist’s most impactful pieces, including the 17 Biblical Message painting. Henri Matisse is honored in the Musée Matisse, which holds some of the artist’s best-known works. It is located near the artist’s former Nice residence and the cemetery where he lays buried. After a day full of sightseeing and walking along the beach, we returned to our hotel, where we indulged in in-room massages. Feeling relaxed and happy after a perfect first day on vacation, we looked forward to the next day of our adventure.

options. We let reservations and location help make this choice for us. A word to the wise—many restaurants in the Riviera are booked up months ahead of time, so if you have your heart set on a particular place, it helps to call ahead. We managed to secure a seating at Jan, a popular spot located in a former motorcycle repair shop, not that you would ever know it thanks to the elegant décor. Every detail, from the blue walls to the unique dishes, were handpicked and added to the restaurant’s sophisticated yet comfortable vibe. Jan has a world-renowned reputation thanks to its South African chef and namesake, Jan Hendrik. The menu, a mix of South African and French cuisine made with all fresh ingredients from local markets, was inspired by Hendrik’s grandmother. There is no option for a la carte; you must have the chef’s selection—but rest assured, he won’t steer you wrong. Even if the flavors sound like they won’t work—Cucumber Ice Cream, is this for real?—you may just discover your new favorite dish.

CUISINE CONSIDERED If the first day of our vacation was about seeing everything the Riviera had to offer, the second day was about experiencing its epicurean offerings. The French Riviera holds more than 50 Michelin stars spread amongst 38 restaurants, not to mention all of the Left: Hotel Negresco; Right: Hotel du Cap-Eden adorable cafes and bistros Roc. If you really want to vacation like a celebrity, Cannes is the place to see and be seen.

CANNES-DO ATTITUDE The French Riviera is sometimes referred to as a playground for celebrities. In fact, the region has earned this reputation from the annual Festival de Cannes, the international film festival. The invitation-only festival previews new films of all genres from all around the world. The Festival de Cannes celebrated its 70th anniversary this year, with special events at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. The Boulevard de la Croisette is the street on which the festival takes place, and this neighborhood offers a spot with just the right amount of star power. Cannes’ fabled history is loaded with the antics of celebrities during their visits since 1947, when the festivities began. Five-star luxury hotels, luxury shops, and top restaurants line the famed boulevard. One such destination is the Intercontinental Carlton Cannes. The hotel was the setting for Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief, and the hotel still pays tribute to this 1955 cinematic masterpiece. Guests can stay in suite 623, where the film was shot, or in a suite named for the film’s leading lady, Grace Kelly. The hotel also honored the brightest stars who have called the hotel home for a night or two by naming ten Prestige Suites after them. If you want to vacation like a celebrity, Cannes is the place to see and be seen. MONTE CARLO MYSTIQUE The different flavors of each city on the Riviera makes the area such a vibrant and exciting place to visit. Monte Carlo, though located in its own independent principality, is considered a part of the French Riviera, and we dedicated our final day of the trip to exploring what this city had to offer. When I think of Monaco, I immediately think of Grace Kelly, so my first stop had to be the castle where she lived out every girl’s dream of being a real-life princess. Most know Kelly was an American actress who became the Princess of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III in 1956. The Prince’s Palace of Monaco is still the royal family residence, so it is heavily guarded, but you can still see the Renaissance-style façade and catch a glimpse of the view she must have had from her tower.

130

As we walked around and took in the view, there was one thing we couldn’t help but notice. Beyond the architecture and the seafront, there were luxury cars as far as the eye could see. Ferraris, Buggatis, Maseratis, Aston Martins, you could find them all. Lamborghinis are basically the Hondas of Monte Carlo...commonplace and ubiquitous. There is something about Monte Carlo that insists you step up your game to join the glamourous fun. It is the perfect place to celebrate a birthday, or indeed any landmark occasion. For our final stop, we headed to the famed Hotel de Paris, a recognizable landmark from movies such as The Red Shoes, Iron Man 2, and GoldenEye, and stepped into

the very lobby where Audrey Hepburn was discovered as a film starlet. With a marble staircase and a stunning chandelier, it oozed old-school allure. Cameron chose the hotel's historic Salle Empire restaurant in the hotel for his birthday dinner, and we were greeted at the entrance with glasses of champagne. Our three-course meal was nothing short of pure decadence, from the cheese plate to the lobster to the Grand Marnier soufflé for dessert. The windows of Salle looked out over the Monte Carlo Casino entrance, and we grew more excited about the next stop of the evening as

we watched men and women get out of their exotic cars and climb the red-carpeted steps. We soon took their lead and found ourselves following in the footsteps of James Bond into the fabled casino. The slot machines were not kind, but we found our luck at the Roulette table. A few rounds in, and it was like we hadn’t spent any money at the casino at all. We decided to leave before Lady Luck decided to favor someone else. After such a perfect vacation, it truly felt as though we couldn’t get any luckier.
