Inspiration Board for Nov/Dec 2021
Onward Ever, Backward Never
We are all swirling back into the ballroom now to support our favorite causes and to make up for lost time. Even though the show did indeed go on during the COVID-19 period, there is currently a renewed robustness and spirit in play. Things have picked up more momentum than in recent memory, so it begs the question, what will the future of philanthropy look like? It’s an important question for all of us. Our theory, and based on many conversations with experts, is that it will grow and evolve like we each individually have. There are still plenty of ways to give back either through volunteerism and public service with a favorite cause or a dozen, sponsoring facets of an organization’s needs, or donating much-needed funds as non-profits get fully back on track again to be a beacon of hope in all our communities. Knowing that giving is essential, we also know that receiving is worthy, too. Beyond holiday donations that you might consider, we’ve amped up the giving and receiving process like never before with a year’s worth of seeking out the perfect gifts, culminating in our The Riches Of The Season annual holiday gift

GOING UP! ENTERING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, OUR favorite around here, the excitement mounts. As we have all navigated the pandemic as well as we can, it has offered so many teachable moments of how we individually maneuver through the world, and how the world, well, navigates us. With the tree going up and the festive holiday décor donning just about everywhere we turn, our thoughts take a sentimental turn during these months. Sentiment, a favorite tendency, literally, means many things to many people. For me, it’s enjoying the warmth of the season and reflecting, while also looking forward and projecting ahead. That means thoughts of a long-ago aluminum Christmas tree and favorite toys received, to now, enjoying the younger family folk enjoying their new-found holiday traditions.

FORECAST TREND: LIFE’S A PARTY. THE PARTY HAS NOT STOPPED. IT JUST LOOKS DIFFERENT. Description: The rise and rebirth of occasion wear and dress-up clothes. If life on lockdown has taught us anything, it’s life is a party worth dressing for…even, if it’s a party of one. These looks allow us to transcend daily life and make every day a special event. In the immortal words of Audrey Hepburn, “Life’s a party. Dress for it.” Key Details: Dresses, dresses, and more dresses. High shine finishes, glittery details, glossy metallics, iridescent fabrics, and overthe-top embellishments. There was a definite theme of the Roaring 20s version 2.0. The 1920s were all about glitz and glamour with an underlying movement toward simplicity in dress. The current looks reinterpret much of this philosophy. As Seen On: Chanel, Naeem Khan, Lanvin, and Markarian
Clockwise from left: Courtesy of Alexis Mabille, Courtesy of Christian Cowan, Courtesy of Lanvin, Courtesy of Naeem Khan, Courtesy of C+Plus Series
Celebration: New Year’s Eve in Paris, the office party...even if it’s on Zoom, a fancy holiday meal, or cocktails.
SPARKLE MOR TREND: FEMALE POWER RENAISSANCE. A NEW DAWN OF THE ULTRA-FEMININE AESTHETIC. Description: Body-baring and confident, this trend is redefining sexy by highlighting collarbones, shoulders, and sides. This look is all about highlighting the feminine form in unexpected ways with sleek silhouettes that are body-skimming more than body con. Women-defined sexy that is subtle yet more powerful than previous seasons.
Clockwise from left: Courtesy of Givenchy, Courtesy of David Koma, Courtesy of Victoria Beckham, Courtesy of Valentino, Courtesy of Rokh
Key Details: Out are ruffles, frills, poofy skirts, and in-your-face femininity. In is sheer cutouts, bras, bandeaus, and strength. Hot pants and corset details in everything from patent leather to velvet. High neck and maxilength silhouettes are made sexy with the use of sheer and lace panels. As Seen On: Dolce & Gabbana, Schiaparelli, Sportmax, and Rokh Celebration: Anything with your girls. New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas, or cocktails.

TREND:DOWN-TO-EARTH. GROUNDED INSPIRATION WITH AN ELEVATED TWIST. Description: These looks embrace the duality of cozy luxury. An essential yet adaptable wardrobe with pieces that can be dressed up or down in colors and fabrics inspired by nature. Rooted in ease and relaxation, there is a nofuss vibe even when sequins are involved. Form and function, this trend must be comfortable, polished, and useful. And must have pockets. Key Details: Ground unique pieces with basics: Sequins and denim, tulle and linen, knits and satin. Look for loose-fitting trousers, jeans, joggers, and skirts. Layer different textures to bring visual interest to simple, even monochromatic looks. With time off from holiday dressing last year, we’re back in the saddle now and bringing more shine and sparkle to our essence. Here, our new column, THE EDIT ADVISORY, with Krystal De Lisi and Ellen Mason, spotlights the trends you’ll want to know.
TREND: THE FUTURE IS GREEN. A COLOR THAT REPRESENTS TRANQUILITY, LUCK, AND HEALTH. Description: Verdant hues and frondescent prints reflect our need to bring the outdoors in. It is also a literal manifestation of the need for sustainable clothing and a cleaner fashion industry. Key Details: Olive is a key shade in this trend. Also called army green, these camo shades, along with military details, reflect the regimented times in which they were designed. Misty shades or winterized pastels like seafoam or sage are also popular. THRIVE
Silver Linings We all realize that with every challenge, there is potential, especially as we reflect on this year’s obstacles and possibilities, according to our Austin-based Resonance Repatterning expert, Mary Schneider. YEAR ROUND OPPORTUNITIES THE HOLIDAYS ARE ALWAYS SUCH A WONDERFUL TIME OF the year. Within that joy, there is much to contemplate in 2021 on so many levels. Consider the changes encountered since this past January. Of course, we have new leadership in Washington, with its itinerant challenges, some already serious. Leading the way is the pandemic. The vaccine and variants will remain the top story for a while. Yet, it is a tiny fraction of the whole. It is also stressful, and that’s without factoring in our own personal dynamic thus far. Hopes can be dashed regularly. Things seem to be settling down only to be resurrected just as we begin to relax a bit. Learning to live with high‒stress every day can be instructive. Luckily, opportunities do present themselves daily. What are we able to live with while staying present and engaged without compromising who we are? Many of us did not know what it would look like if these boundaries were pushed. We have learned a lot about ourselves, which is truly a silver lining...a ray of light.
our psyche that might be negatively influencing our decision-making process. Furnished with this kind of knowledge, we enrich our creativity and learn not to repeat negative patterns. Recent studies have discovered that the pandemic has triggered an extensive re-evaluation of work and life for some Americans. Countless people are deliberating changes in their careers and their communities. The Washington Post recently quoted an Austin man who was forced to change careers, “If you come out of the pandemic the same as you were, you’ve missed an opportunity to evolve and grow as a person.” The article added, “Nearly 1 in 3 U.S. workers under the age of 40 have thought about changing their occupation or field of work since the pandemic began.” Life is an ongoing and dynamic process. We are in a continual state of transition. When our day-to-day routines progress along non-stop, we may not notice the subtle changes in our lives and in who we are becoming. An event like the pandemic is a great interrupter–an opportunity to be more mindful of our lives’ processes–and what is important to us. Change is good, and sometimes painful. Those who have been through a painful divorce or serious health alarm can attest to this reality.
During the holiday season, we re-connect with relatives and friends not normally seen–a double-edged sword at times, as we all know. Also, many people are often quite busy the last few weeks of the year. As a result, the holidays are inherently stressful. This year, as last, promises again to be challenging. Still, it is different energetically. We are stronger this year and more resilient. To most, with the vaccine, we are empowered and potent. This is always a winning combination–the self-esteem trifecta–strength, empowerment, and potency.
Another young woman interviewed in The Washington Post article stated, “The pandemic taught me that nothing is guaranteed now. Everything can change within months, if not weeks,” she observed. “Just being able to spend time by myself made me realize what path I did and did not want to go down.”
HOW TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT What can we do with all of this? There are plenty of options. If we are present and live in the heart, then whatever we decide will be the best decision. Reflection fortifies us. Because of where we have been, we see what might have been done differently. Contemplation allows us to recognize patterns in
Contemplation and stillness were not a significant part of our lifestyle pre-pandemic. Now, these tools have become so much more accessible. We do not need to change anything. However, it is wonderful to know that if we choose to, there is the potential for many people to provide support and community…another silver lining.

We Had A Marvelous Time Our Etiquette Guy, Jay Remer, is on the scene to smooth over the wrinkles when social conundrums occur. He shows us how to be cool, calm, and collected in these holiday months. Dear Etiquette Guy With the holidays upon us, we’d like to entertain in our home this year since we didn’t last year. But, due to Covid, how do we tastefully confirm that everyone remains healthy and is fully vaccinated? Soirée-Ready Dear Soirée Sera Sera, This is an important question and a legitimate concern. Unfortunately, the stance around vaccinations has divided some members of our society. As with almost any emotionally charged issue, expressing ourselves with grace and clarity is essential. On an invitation, you simply write: We request that all guests be fully vaccinated. Because this is critical to you, send a confirmatory email for any less formal invitations, ensuring guests understand this. As time moves forward, instructions such as masks optional, etc., can be employed. Dear Etiquette Guy, During the holiday season, I realize we all feel more generous than ever. What is your policy of a gratuity gift for helpers who make life so much better year-round? Totally Tips Dear Tips Plenty, Showing gratitude during the holidays is a tradition everyone enjoys. Professional service providers appreciate all Holiday cards, but especially those from loyal customers with crisp cash inside. The amount of the gift usually is equivalent to a regular appointment. For example, if you pay $100 for a service that you enjoy monthly, $100 would be appropriate. Generosity is boundless and depends upon the depth of the relationship you have. Non-cash gifts of equivalent value may feel more comfortable in certain situations or where cash gifts are verboten. As you give, also be grateful for the services you’ve enjoyed as well as the joy of sharing.

Dear Etiquette Guy, A friend of mine’s sister joins us for dinner periodically. She’s lovely and a fun conversationalist, but recently she’s gotten in the habit of stopping in the middle of the meal to go “live” on social media and posting a barrage of selfies. May I ask her to refrain? Social Media Savvy Dear Savvy & Social, Yes, I encourage you to ask her to refrain, as her actions run the risk of making people feel uncomfortable. They interrupt the dinner conversations and crash through boundaries of etiquette that would merit checking. For example, you might ask your friend to speak with her sister in private. Correcting a dinner guest at the table would cause embarrassment, which is always best to avoid. Often, the offender is oblivious to their rudeness, and once aware will stop. Otherwise, you can impose the “no cell phones at the dinner table.” rule. That puts everyone on equal footing. Dear Etiquette Guy, My cousin’s best friend has a habit of, well, licking his fingers instead of using a napkin. Is it ever okay to do that, as I can’t imagine others like seeing or hearing, it either? I don’t want to offend or be offended, either. Neat & Natty Dear Neatest of Them All, Licking fingers is best for picnic tables, or crab bakes where we eat most foods by hand and rules change. Otherwise, this unattractive habit is offensive. One way to avoid this annoyance is to serve food that doesn’t require using your fingers. As with most pet peeves, we need to take responsibility for our feelings and avoid blaming others. If people are eating finger food, licking fingers is part of the deal. We’ve been oppressed enough through COVID–no need to impose a ban on finger-licking everywhere.

That ’70s Woman Houstonian Lois Chiles, a great beauty, was one of Hollywood’s most casted actors in the 1970s and 80s. Here, our resident cinephile, Lance Avery Morgan , looks back at her style-setting career in some of the greatest films of the era...from perky ingénue to powerful Bond Girl.
BORN LUCKY SHE WAS THE RAVEN-HAIRED GLAMOUR GIRL OF THE MOMENT who seemed to be everywhere…in some of the much-loved, biggest cinema hits of the era…The Way We Were (1973), The Great Gatsby (1974), Coma (1978), Death on the Nile (1978), and Moonraker (1979). Her co-stars? Little names like Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford, Peter Ustinov, Mia Farrow, Michael Douglas, and Bette Davis, to name a few. At 74, she will always likely be the most beautiful septuagenarian in any room she frequents. Being a woman born in Houston and raised in South Texas, the road to Hollywood was never paved with expectations. She hailed from an oil business family, with her oil tycoon uncle being Eddie Chiles, known for his opinions, as well as his I’m Mad Too, Eddie bumper stickers that graced the gas guzzlers of the era. “I grew up in Alice, Texas, a small oil town with one theater that only showed Roy Rogers movies,” said Chiles in an early career interview. “So when I got the role (of Moonraker), I had never even seen a Bond film and only had a vague notion about the idea of a Bond girl.” With the Bond series, according to Hollywood folklore, she was the original choice for the role of Agent Triple X in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). Her opportunity to be a Bond girl arose after she was seated next to director Lewis Gilbert on a plane and wowed him enough to land the coveted part in Moonraker. Ah, Hollywood. Born in Houston, Chiles has a familiar beauty–she looks exotic, like a successful colleague, and like a PTA member who also has an adventurous bent to photograph wild animals on safari in Africa. That, along with being a supermodel and one of the most photographed faces of the 70s, undoubtedly helped her career along in Hollywood, which is not always known for long, satisfying careers. Yet, in that golden time of cinema magic, her star shone brightly. “I signed with (agent) Billy Barnes and got my first role in an interracial love story filmed in Atlanta called Together For Days with Clifton Davis. My mother thinks it was my best work. You cannot find a copy of it,“ she recounted. True, that first film was never released, but it served as a springboard to appearing in some of the sexy 70s’ most memorable films. cont’d...

BEAUTY’S CALLING CARD She attended the University of Texas at Austin as a freshman in 1965 before going on a cruise and following a Princeton student across the country and eventually turning down his marriage proposal. She’d return and graduate in 1969 and was quickly discovered by a Glamour magazine editor as the fresh face of the future, which kicked her modeling career into high gear. With her azure blue eyes and locks of ebony satin, she was off to the races and graced just about every major magazine cover of the era. After her string of film hits, she, like many talents who swim in the pool of the receding waters of fame, did what she could to keep her acting chops sharp. She starred in a season of Dallas, as a paramour of Larry Hagman’s J.R. Ewing, of course, and in other glossy shows like Hart to Hart, L.A. Law, and a bevy of T.V. movies of the week that achieved high ratings. She continued to act in theatrical films like 80s favorites Broadcast News (1987) and Say Anything (1989). In fact, she’s been directed by four Academy Award© winners: Sydney Pollack, James L. Brooks, Cameron Crowe, and Quentin Tarantino. Then, Chiles does what many with Texas roots do...she decided, after the Millennium, a return to the Lone Star State, namely Houston, was the best path for her to follow.

So, she landed a teaching position at the University of Houston in 2001, where fellow actors Dennis Quaid, Loretta Divine, and many others had hailed. LUXE LIFE Like all women who cut a stunning figure, there would be many men, most of them famous and often reported in the press. A long relationship with fellow native and Eagles band frontman Don Henley lasted for half a decade until she stated that the rock lifestyle of private jets, limos, and all that goes along with it wasn’t sustainable for her. She hit the headlines again with a relationship with CBS founder Bill Paley, who was well into his 80s to her 30s. She then married philanthropist Richard Gilder (who passed away of congestive heart failure in 2010). Because creativity knows no bounds, Chiles is known as an artist these days. She most often paints women, and her color palette is moody and evocative. She drew as a child and picked up the hobby later in life, where she practices both in Houston and her home in New York. Her beauty and talent still continue to dazzle, both on-screen and off, and we love how Lois Chiles seems to have created a fairytale life that most only live in their dreams.

DRIVE
TURBO STYLE
With a high-performance vehicle like the McLaren 720S Spider, something special is in store that unleashes on the road, according to our luxe automotive expert, Michael Satterfield of TheG entlemanRacer.com. By Michael Satterfield
Photography courtesy of The Gentleman Racer
WHEELS UP...ON THE GROUND SLIDING BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE MCLAREN 720S SPIDER is an event, with its futuristic gauge cluster, electrochromic roof, and panel of switches and screens, one feels like they just climbed into something more akin to a fighter jet than a car. A push of the start button brings the 710-horsepower twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 screaming to life, and with the push of another button, you lower the retractable hardtop. With the top open, the sound gets even better. It isn’t the loud burble you would expect from a V8 or the high pitch whine of some supercars, but it’s a smooth rumble that feels more mature than, say, the howl of a Lamborghini. According to McLaren, the 720S will do 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 212 mph. While those numbers may sound exhilarating, the 720S Spider
manages to feel relatively normal to drive. In fact, the power comes on smoothly, so it is easy to find yourself doing triple-digit speeds quickly. Once you glance down at the speedometer and realize you need to slow down, a set of massive carbon-ceramic brakes and sticky Pirelli P Zero tires help bring everything back under control. In today’s world of 1,000+ horsepower muscle cars, 710 hp may not sound that impressive, yet McLaren has decided to focus more on weight and balance than just adding horsepower into their cars. Thanks to their carbon fiber chassis, the 720S Spider comes in just 2,937 pounds dry, making it 83 pounds lighter than the 650S Spider and just 109 pounds heavier than the 720S Coupe. Because of this focus on weight reduction, a fully equipped McLaren Spider is still lighter than the stripped-down versions of Italian supercars. cont’d...

Twisted Sister Path
EXPERIENCING THE ROAD To really get the most out of the 720S Spider, you might want to sign up for the Pure McLaren Experience, hosted in the US at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. Not only do you get to drive the same track as the McLaren Formula 1 team, but you can also get a ride-along with pro drivers who will show you the limits of what a McLaren can do in the hands of a professional. If a track day isn’t in the cards, the Twisted Sisters is a great place to take a car like the 720S. Made up of Ranch Roads 337, 335, and 336, the entire loop is around 100 miles and starts and ends in the small town of Leakey, Texas. The Sisters follow the canyons and hills through a series of tight twisty turns and provide some amazing views but stay focused on the road... since it is one of the most technical drives you’ll find in Texas. Pushing it in the canyons, you really feel how well balanced the car is and how every part of it is built to perform. Returning to civilization means traffic, potholes, and parking lots, but the 720S Spider settles down and becomes as drivable as any other car. In comfort mode, its quiet, smooth, front-end lift, and 360-degree backup camera, makes navigating parking spots worry-free. The only weak point is the McLaren 720S’s infotainment and navigation system takes some getting used to. Being an exotic, it’s how normal it feels that makes the 720S Spider so good. It’s easy to drive, enter, and exit, the controls are intuitive, the trunk space is surprisingly large, and the dihedral doors open in less space than most standard cars. But with a flick of the switch, the instrument cluster lowers, the car tightens, and over fifty years of racing heritage is unleashed, and just like that, you’re behind the wheel of a truly spectacular supercar. The 720S Spider also has one other thing going for it. Something that McLaren hasn’t always been known for...it’s actually pretty. While function always overtakes form, the McLaren 720S is one of their most elegant cars, and taking the top off makes it even better. Starting at $315,000, the 720S Spider is delivering significant value in the topless supercar space. With the new Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster coming in at over $573,000 and a Ferrari 488 Pista Spider starting at over $350,000, the McLaren is the best deal for a very, very fast car with no top.

Fine Philanthropy Dr. Edward Burger, President and CEO of St. David’s Foundation, based in Austin, recently shared his insight with our Lance Avery Morgan on the many nuances of the philanthropic spirit and how it can positively affect so many. Lance Avery Morgan: Dr. Burger, can you tell us about St. David’s Foundation and the organization’s vision for our Central Texas community? Dr. Edward Burger: St. David’s Foundation is one of the largest health foundations in the United States, funding $80 million annually in a five-county area surrounding Austin, Texas. Through a unique partnership with St. David’s HealthCare, the Foundation reinvests proceeds from the hospital system back into the community, with a goal of advancing health equity and improving the health and well-being of our most underserved Central Texas neighbors. St. David’s Foundation also operates the largest mobile dental program providing charity care in the country and offers the largest healthcare scholarship program in Texas. LAM: St. David’s Foundation is a part of the philanthropic and social web of the community—to what does it owe that success?
key, distinguishing element of our program’s success. LAM: It’s so great when many of the scholarship recipients share their personal stories at the Toast events. All proceeds from Toast of the Town sponsorships and tickets, with a two-to-one match by St. David’s Foundation, are dedicated to St. David’s Neal Kocurek Scholarship program. What kind of impact do you see that philanthropy having? EB: Looking ahead, it’s essential that we foster the next generation of physicians, nurses, dentists, lab technicians and others to provide quality care to the communities served by these future healthcare professionals. We are reminded now, more than ever, of the vital importance of a strong healthcare workforce for the health and well-being of our Central Texas neighbors. LAM: Beyond the Toast events, please share some of your insight on the Foundation’s grant-making initiatives.
EB: As stewards of our community dollars, we have worked over the last 25 years to foster longstanding, collaborative relationships. From our outstanding Board members, volunteers, and event chairs to our grantees and partners on the ground, I believe we share a commitment to improving health outcomes for our Central Texas neighbors. LAM: The Foundation began its Toast of the Town events a few decades back in 1984—why do you think it was initially so successful—and still so successful? It has a huge following... EB: The concept of Toast of the Town is truly unique and built on a model that speaks from the heart—opening one’s home to host intimate gatherings. It quickly became a suite of favorite annual philanthropic social events for our many supporters. The soirees and programming change every year, offering something special for every taste and interest. Part of the secret to Toast’s ongoing success is that it continues to evolve right along with Central Texas.
Dr. Edward Burger
LAM: The Toast of the Town annual events each spring provide philanthropic support and awareness for St. David’s Neal Kocurek Scholarship—how does it benefit students pursuing their educations in health-related fields? EB: Our scholarship program is truly transformational in nature. Many of our students are the first in their families to attend college, so our scholarship community provides academic and emotional support in addition to financial assistance. Each scholar is also matched with a healthcare professional who mentors them for a minimum of four years. The guidance of these mentors is vital to encouraging our scholars along their unique journeys and has become a

EB: We are guided by a commitment to achieving health equity both today and tomorrow. Our work is based on our belief that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve optimal health, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or zip code. And while access to high-quality medical care is essential, health is about much more than a visit to the doctor. In fact, the most influential drivers of health outcomes are factors that exist outside of the healthcare system, such as poverty, unemployment, housing status, and education level. Our strategic initiatives throughout Central Texas range from support of safety net clinics and mobile charity dental care to initiatives that promote healthy environments for young children to increase their odds of succeeding in school, to critical support for older adults and their caregivers to allow aging in place.
LAM: Thanks so much for your time and looking ahead, what are your thoughts on philanthropy in this region and opportunities that exist for our community within the philanthropic sector? EB: We stand in a pivotal moment. We continue to see a rapid increase in our population, along with tremendous growth in wealth, access, and innovation. Central Texas, in particular, has the opportunity to foster a stronger philanthropic environment that is more on par with other major cities with mature cultures of community giving. I believe through collective collaboration and contribution, we have the potential to truly transform Austin and Central Texas for generations to come. This aspiration holds the promise to be one of our greatest collective legacies.

In fact, electric cars are transforming the industry, and many automakers are committing to introducing high-performing electric vehicles in their line-up. The most popular types of electric vehicles are battery electric or hybrids. Battery electric vehicles are powered by electricity stored in a battery pack, and Plug-in Hybrids combine a gasoline engine with an electric motor and a rechargeable battery.

THE SETTING: The Houston Symphony recently celebrated the beginning of its fall season with the annual Opening Night Concert & Gala: An Evening with Renée Fleming at the Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts. Throughout the evening, with pandemic protocol in place, guests wore face masks while mingling at Jones Hall and later at the Corinthian.

THE STYLE: Following a champagne reception in the mezzanine area of the concert hall, guests settled into their seats for the long-awaited opening night concert featuring the superstar soprano Renée Fleming alongside the Houston Symphony’s Principal POPS Conductor Steven Reineke. Fleming wowed the crowd as she showcased her virtuosity in a program of opera arias and songs from composers such as Handel, Corigliano, Leoncavallo, and Cilea, as well as musical theater songs and classic Broadway overtures from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel and The King and I. Immediately following the concert, guests continued the festivities at the Corinthian, where they were greeted by the sounds of the Richard Brown Orchestra. Richard Flowers of The Events Company decorated the beautiful room, and the multicourse dinner was prepared by City Kitchen, accompanied by select wine pairings by Lindy Rydman, John Rydman, and Lisa Rydman of Spec’s Wines, Spirits, & Finer Food.
THE PURPOSE: The gala, chaired by longtime

organization supporters Robin Angly and Miles Smith, raised $600,000 towards the Houston Symphony’s industry-leading Education and Community Programming, which serves more than 200,000 Houstonians annually. For the 35th consecutive year, ConocoPhillips served as the Concert Sponsor and Lead Gala Corporate Underwriter for the event. Funds raised from the evening support the Houston Symphony Education and Outreach Programs, specifically serving community partnerships with area hospitals to increase the quality of life for patients, families, and caregivers through bedside visits and in-hospital performances. These bedside and inhospital visits became virtual during the pandemic and continued to use music to ease patients’ time in the hospital.

Floral Ambience San Antonio Botanical Garden Shines With Stunning Al Fresco Gala By Jake Gaines | Photography by Greg Harrison
THE SETTING: Over 500 guests in fashionable floral and garden-inspired attire enjoyed a beautiful breezy evening at the San Antonio Botanical Garden for its annual Splendor in The Garden gala. The décor, living walking florals, by Artisan Oddities was a delight to behold. The floral, ribbon decor, and sparkling tree lights by Trinity Flowers’ Danny Cuellar, Danesa Woehrle, and Alex Woehrle were a feast for the eyes. THE STYLE: The gala was a wandering affair through the San Antonio Botanical Garden as guests were serenaded by Carlos’ Guitar. Greeted by butterfly ballerinas, attendees strolled down the promenade to the iconic Lucile Halsell Conservatory Courtyard for the cocktail hour featuring live music, butterfly ballet vignettes, and delicious hors d’oeuvres. As the sun was setting, guests were escorted to the Greehey Lawn, set ablaze in twinkling tree lights. The beautiful new space is ringed with a massive canopy of oak and cypress trees. The seated dinner consisted of 68 beautifully adorned tables at which a gourmet meal was served. Following a Ballet Conservatory of South Texas performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, complete with glowing butterfly wings, guests heard remarks from San Antonio Botanical Garden Board of Directors’ President Karen Greenwood, Mayor Ron Nirenburg, Botanical Garden CEO Sabina Carr, and Event Chair Susan Shown Todd. The afterparty in the Betty Kelso Center had guests dancing to DJ Catwalk’s beats into the night. THE PURPOSE: The record-breaking signature fundraising event raised nearly half a million dollars to support the San Antonio Botanical Garden. The mission of the organization is to enrich lives through plants and nature. One way the Garden does that is by connecting more than 60,000 children to the natural world by funding educational programs throughout the year. Programs include Little Sprouts, Terrarium Ecosystem, Early Childhood Lifecycles, the Children’s Vegetable Garden, summer camps, culinary health and wellness, drop-in programming, and the Family Adventure Garden.

A Tale of Tails Houston’s PetSet Gala Offers Support To Animals By Jennifer Roosth | Photography by Quy Tran
THE SETTING: Houston’s movers and shakers came out in full force with both their hearts and wallets to support the PetSet’s 17th Annual Fierce and Fabulous Soirée. The beautiful chandelier-lined ballroom of the event’s Post Oak Hotel created the perfect backdrop for this year’s gala, which raised a significant amount of funds even during the pandemic. THE STYLE: It was a resoundingly successful evening of cocktails, dinner, and luxury auction items. Mistress of Ceremonies, Deborah Duncan, provided the audience with much laughter and banter from the podium. First, The Angel Award recipient, Jan Duncan, was celebrated with a moving video tribute. Then, the celebrity canine guest, a rescue dog brought back to good health through the services of Houston PetSet, was showcased. With pandemic protocol in place at the gala, other longtime supporting PetSet guests such as Sue Smith, Les Alexander, Don Sanders, and Honoree Jan Duncan live-streamed the event from the comfort of their homes. THE PURPOSE: More than 400 animal lovers joined Tena Lundquist Faust, Tama Lundquist, and Brigitte Kalai, the event chairs. PetSet events are always full of glamour, but the animals were the true winners of this event. Houston PetSet is a non-profit organization providing grants to Houston area charities that benefit animal welfare. They are committed to spaying, neutering, rescuing, adopting, and transporting the homeless pet population. Houston PetSet partners are recipients of the net proceeds of the evening as well as Houston PetSet’s own critical programming focusing on animal homelessness in Houston.
