WHERE FOCUS GOES, ENERGY FLOWS. IT’S A PHYSICS LAW that we well understand here, thanks to our talented team who make the wheels turn in the engine to create and produce the Society Texas print magazine, its digital brother, and a host of social media outlets. This summer, the first one in years of feeling free again post-pandemic, we all have a sense of feeling unleashed and rarin’ to go for good times ahead. In fact, that started this spring across the state, and we are very proud to present a look at how so many philanthropies have made a difference in their communities and beyond. Many are newer organizations, and some are over a century old, such as San Antonio’s weekslong Fiesta celebrations. We salute Fiesta, which is steeped in a long line of Texas tradition, in this issue with an homage to this year’s Order Of The Alamo coronation court, themed The Court Of The Grand Tour. The gowns and accoutrement are a year in the making, and you can bet that 2023’s outfits are already being designed and made to behold next year. Fiesta is one of those Texas legacies that is a culmination of biography, behavior, and backstory....one that we appreciate greatly. Socially, the sheer fact is philanthropists have made up for lost time (even though donations were generous during the pandemic) in giving back. A gala that raises $10, 11, or even 12 million in one evening, thanks to its spirited patrons, isn’t rare anymore and happens in almost every single major city that we cover. The work that happens behind the scenes of the talented organizations, who create the gala experience are to be commended, for they are tireless and often not rewarded. We proudly salute them in every issue.

As the summer progresses, If you’re like us, you’ve been up to your necks in planning several warm weather excursions. One of our favorites is Budapest, which Ashley Dobson so eloquently helps unfold with her many insights of VIP things to do when you get there. The Extra Mile Is Rarely Crowded In these changing times, we are all minding our P’s and Q’s, thanks to our Etiquette Guy, Jay Remer, who is on the scene to help us through some socially delicate situations that may occur.

Dear Etiquette Guy, I REALIZE WE ALL MUST BE FLEXIBLE POST COVID, YET ARE there any new rules to canceling plans last minute not due to a family or personal emergency? Places To Be Dear Busy Bee, We should only cancel plans last minute when necessary. Nothing has changed about that. However, we are not post-COVID yet–don’t be fooled. Many people still treat this virus as a serious health risk. Therefore, if you test positive or have symptoms, let your host know as soon as possible. Some people believe we’ve reached the point where we’ll need to adjust to mingling without masks in large groups, while others are still cautious due to personal health issues. The host will let you know how they feel about your attendance. If your position is you’ll stay home because you’ve been exposed, then that’s a decision they should honor. Allow common sense and your intuition to guide your decisions. Dear Etiquette Guy, Thanks to the increase in social events, what is the protocol for accepting two invitations on the same evening that are guestmanageable from a timing standpoint? For example, cocktails at one function and dinner (or a gala attendance) at another? Being There, Doing That Dear Social Butterfly, Accepting multiple invitations for the same evening is nothing unusual, busy bee. Typically, invitations rarely arrive on the same day, but either way, send your acceptance to your host as soon as you make your decision. Gala hosts often collaborate with friends to host a pre-gala drinks party, which often adds to the momentum of the evening, creating the magic everyone loves. During the height of any social season, multiple invitations will conflict. Be sure if you accept any invitation, you attend the party. Deciding between events can be a challenge, and sometimes less is more. But when the spirit moves and time allows, fill your boots.

Dear Etiquette Guy, A great pal from college has begun a new liquor company and has generously offered to supply his product at my wedding, gratis. The trouble is that my fiancé doesn’t like it at all. What do you recommend? Groom To Be Dear Getting Groomed, Honesty is always the best policy. Your fiancé’s preference trumps your pal’s generous offer when it comes to any wedding plans. Part of starting a new business is generating leads and what better way to do this than at a party? Perhaps you could offer to showcase his new product line on a more informal occasion. You have the upper hand here, so he feels congratulatory and kind, although overriding your fiancé’s wishes could spell disaster. My recommendation is to avoid the avoidable. Dear Etiquette Guy, Since outdoor entertaining is everywhere now, not all guests offer dishes that the majority would like. How do I gently persuade the guest to bring something else instead that might be more of a fan favorite? Getting My Grill On Dear Potluck Host, Coordination is key to the success of any gathering where food from multiple sources is the flavor of the day. As the host, you can guide everyone’s choices. You will undoubtedly lean on one guest or another for their favorite dessert or potato salad. As the host, you may want to be responsible for one or more of the main courses and invite your guests to fill in around those selections. If someone suggests an anchovy pie, and you know that won’t be a hit, feel free to suggest something else. However, I caution you from being too quick to reject any offerings. You never know who might relish trying a new dish. Not everything needs to please everyone–it rarely does. The choice is yours as host, and again, I defer to one’s common sense and intuition–they can be your best friends when making these calls.

Developing A More Playful Attitude Starts Now When we were children, didn’t it seem like an endless summer then? No time constraints to keep us from pursuing fun. Today you can get back–and move forward–to that blissful feeling, according to our professional life coach expert, Angie McCourt.

CREATIVE COMMONS OUR FAST-PACED WORLD CAN HAVE US FEELING LIKE A ROBOT moving from task to task and decision to decision each day. It may feel like something is missing as we do everything we are supposed to do for our family, work, and others. Have we forgotten something on our busy life journey? Perhaps it was left in our childhood or adolescence? Maybe it was something we enjoyed about ourselves, such as how we learned and engaged with others. What about play? You may ask, are adults supposed to play, like children do? The answer is a resounding yes, and you can add it back into your adult life, starting here and now. When we are engaged in playful activities, we stimulate our creative minds and increase our imagination, which helps us create new ideas, learn new skills, and problem solve. In fact, engaged play is thought to help increase happiness, align you with your deepest needs, and is a huge predictor of your wellbeing. Studies show that play improves memory and stimulates the growth of the cerebral cortex. Play reduces cortisol, the hormone responsible for stress, and releases endorphins (the good feeling hormone.) Play reduces burnout, stimulates the brain, boosts creativity and innovation, and increases productivity, social skills, and emotional wellbeing. Let’s focus on creativity for a moment. Creativity is not only about being artistic. Everyone has a form of creativity. It’s all about how they access this resource. It includes solutions, ideas, or approaches that may otherwise be closed off. Play opens up creativity, so we can expand and grow. Play doesn’t have to include a specific activity; it can also be a state of mind. When we approach challenges from a playful place, we can uncover creative solutions. Developing a carefree nature can be as simple as not taking ourselves or life too seriously. LIMITLESS PLAY If you find yourself limiting your playfulness, it’s possible that you’re self-conscious and concerned about how you’ll look and sound to others when attempting to be lighthearted. Or, it could be you have been in the habit of being serious all the time because you’ve been programmed to be serious as an adult. You can shift from this belief and state. Acknowledge these areas, find the deeper truth, and recognize others can feel the same way. You can start small and private in your play.

You might ask, so how am I supposed to play? What should I do? Here are some ideas to get the ball rolling (pun intended). Rediscover what your younger self enjoyed doing. This can take some recall of memories, putting yourself in your own little shoes, or envisioning your 10-yearold self playing and having fun. Host a regular game night with family or friends. Hit the mini-golf course (or standard golf course), bowling alley, etc. Keep in mind not to have an outcome or expectation of a result. Just play. Leave the competition at home. Laughter is play. Find something that brings you laughter or simply laugh at yourself. The key here is to not take yourself or life too seriously. Play with children or pets. The key here is to be fully present. Leave your phone in the other room/car/home. Grab some paint or a pencil and create. No masterpiece is expected here. Just doodle, color, use Playdoh or knit. Schedule time outside at a park, beach, or other outdoor area doing an activity. Get physical with yoga, Pilates, dancing, acting, singing, biking, hiking, riding roller coasters, mountain climbing, surfing, and snorkeling. Play with the intention for you to have fun, not to prove anything. Create a new game. Who says you must play by someone else’s rules? PUTTING PLAY TO WORK When you become stuck in a problem, project, solution, or decision... turn to play. A few laughs and time away from the situation can help open the mind to new creative solutions. Think of a challenge you currently have. Now think of it in a playful way. In your mind, create avatars of the people involved, have a conversation in a cartoon voice, or think of it from a child’s perspective. What would your 10-year-old self do? Schedule time for play without setting an outcome or result. Just be open to what comes up for you at that time, even if it’s only daydreaming. Tapping into this side of yourself (brain, emotions, physical, hormonal) can create more flow in your life. This includes relationships, connections, deep replenishment, and cognitive function. Flow offers balance, ease, and sustainability. As you play, notice how your creativity opens. How can your curiosity and flexibility develop, and how do you loosen your grip on control and the need to force life to happen? In fact, life should always be as playful and enjoyable as possible.

Now, Moving Forward As we all want to push beyond Covid-19 and its effects, we also have the opportunity to be mindful of our emotional growth for the future, according to our insightful Resonance Repatterning expert, Mary Schneider. POST COVID-19, TAKE A DEEP BREATH. WHAT A RELIEF. I RECENTLY spent time on the East Coast and I observed many people there were of the same mindset. Covid has taken a hiatus. So, we might as well make hay while the sun shines and get out and dance like nobody is watching. Despite the colloquialisms, evidence suggests this is the thing to do now. In his New York Times article, You’ve Done Self Care. You’ve Languished. Now Try This, Brad Stulberg suggests we have been in a state of languishing and that it is now time to move on. The solution he advises? Take action–whether we want to act or not. Stulberg cites another New York Times article by Adam Grant, a Wharton organizational psychologist. In his article, There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It’s Called Languishing, Grant defines our all too familiar pandemic mindset. Grant asserts that “Not depressed” doesn’t mean you’re not struggling. “Not burned out” doesn’t mean you’re fired up. By acknowledging this many could feel languished, we can start giving a voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of the void.” Action may very well be the solution. The Fire Chakra (solar plexus) is about action in the Ayurvedic Chakra System. Each chakra has a corresponding emotion, and fire, represents anger and resentment. Anger is the fire; resentment is the smoke underneath. Make sense? Any action, even a little, is highly recommended to heal this anger and resentment. After all, depression can be anger without enthusiasm. Similarly, in the Chinese Five Element Acupuncture System, action

again is the antidote to anger and resentment. The Wood Element is related to the achievement of life goals and growth. It is the Element of Spring and consists of the liver and gall bladder Meridians. Simply put, the liver meridian is associated with anger, the gall bladder with resentment. Liver; livid–it’s not an accident. When these meridians are in balance, some people can enthusiastically move forward in life to realize their dreams and goals in all areas. Judgment is not the issue here. Feeling anger or resentment is not bad or wrong. It is just what it is. Human beings generally have good reason to be angry. Anger gets things done, and it, too, can be a great motivator. We would not have any human rights movements in this country without it. Anger can be very potent, when anger devolves into a deep depression it can stop us. One helpful addition to action is acceptance. Acceptance is even more potent than anger. Often, in difficult situations, I find myself thinking this should not be happening. Yet acceptance gradually emerges and almost any upset eventually dissipates. I recognize this can be challenging, even tough, or impossible in some circumstances. Our prayers and compassion go out to anyone who lost a loved one in the pandemic or is suffering as long-haulers. My wish for us all is to reach a place of acceptance and move on with our lives in whatever form manifests. Get your rest, enjoy the time available to do that, and then dive back into whatever you wish to do moving forward.

ELECTRICALLY CURRENT ELECTRIFICATION IS HERE AND CADILLAC HAS PULLED THE wraps off their first all-electric offering the midsized Lyriq SUV. According to Cadillac, the Lyriq will offer an impressive range of more than 300 miles on a full charge and come in 340 or 500 horsepower configurations. This places it squarely in line when positioned against the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tron, and Tesla Model X. Where the Lyriq stands out, however, is price...with the single-motor Debut Edition starting at thousands less than the Audi and Jaguar, and tens of thousands less than a base model Tesla Model X. The reasonable price point can be attributed to General Motors massive resources since the Lyriq doesn’t compromise in quality or luxury when compared to rivals in this class. Riding on G.M’s new scalable battery architecture, the Lyriq benefits from being developed as an EV from the ground up, offering more space and a low center of gravity. The Lyriq is important for another reason, too. It is the first step towards Cadillac’s goal of an all-electric future. "Every new Cadillac we introduce from this point on in North America will be a state-of-the-art luxury electric vehicle," shared Vice President of Global Cadillac Rory Harvey, during the launch of the Lyriq. That is a bold statement for a company known mostly for its elegant Escalade and luxurious full-size sedans. Where the Lyriq really stands out for me is in the styling. While it has a more traditional look, the Lyriq has a presence that will surely attract many first time EV buyers. It is futuristic without trying to be different simply for the sake of being different. The handsome SUV’s styling still has signature Cadillac design cues, including a front panel resembling a grill that evokes the current generation of Cadillac gasoline powered vehicles. The Debut Edition is offered in four colors: Opulent Blue

Metallic, Crystal White Tri-Coat, Satin Steel Metallic, and Stellar Black Metallic. INSIDE MOVES Moving inside the Lyriq offers all the luxury you would expect in a Cadillac, and of course, the latest technology, including a 33-inch advanced LED display stretching across the dash that has Super Cruise, active noise cancellation, and the Google Built-In connected service. The rocking 19-speak ATG Studio premium sound system features adaptive volume and surround technology while working in concert with the active noise cancellation system. This filters out undesirable road noise and creates the optimal listening experience for driver and passengers. The layout of the dash and other interior features is intuitive and clean. In fact, while the large LED screen offers a lot of control points, there are still buttons and knobs where you expect to find them. To help ease the transition to all-electric, owners who purchase a new Lyriq will receive an option to choose between either two years of unlimited public charging credits on the EVgo charging network, or a credit of up to $1,500 that can be applied toward an eligible installation of a Level 2 home charger or a 240-volt outlet through Qmerit. While I haven’t had the chance yet to do a long-term test in the Lyriq, it is safe to say the Lyriq needs to be on your short list when considering a purchase of an EV. Ordering for the 2023 LYRIQ RWD and AWD models began on May 19, with RWD deliveries expected to start this fall. Deliveries of the 2023 LYRIQ Debut Edition, available online only with a $100 reservation, began this summer.

Recently, on a beautiful afternoon in San Antonio, the Lewis Air Legends Hangar and its historic warbirds were the backdrops for the Breitling USA relaunch of a classic timepiece, the Navitimer. President of Breitling USA Thierry Prissert, owner of Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry, Ryan Berg, and Executive Vice President of Lewis Energy Group, Jessica Lewis Worth, addressed the crowd about the background of both Breitling and Lewis Air Legends and how both companies' missions align to preserve and celebrate history. THE SETTING: The Houston Grand Opera Ball is back. In a big way. Le Voyage à Marrakech was the theme for this year’s signature white-tie event as it returned to the Wortham Theater Center after being displaced for five years—first due to Hurricane Harvey and then COVID-19. Now, back and better than ever, the dreamy and colorful Moroccan adventure set the tone for the evening. Over 470 guests were welcomed with a red-carpet arrival on Fish Plaza. THE STYLE: The evening proved an exotic festival of the senses with North African music by Moodafaruka, Morocco-inspired cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, fortune tellers, henna artists, Abraham’s Rugs, a traditional Moroccan tea service, and a live camel photo op. Once seated for dinner, the charm continued when Houston Grand Opera co-chair, Jennifer Fink, was carried in on a sparkling Amariya—a tradition typically reserved for lavish Moroccan weddings. A belly dancer performance and a surprise rendition of La Vie en Rose by soprano Ana María Martínez mesmermized the crowd. For dinner, City Kitchen tantalized the guests’ palates with a Mediterranean feast highlighting the flavors of Morocco and culminating with a Gilded Chocolate Genie Lantern filled with Dark Chocolate Mousse and garnished with Figs and Anise Whipped Cream. Following Le Voyage à Marrakech, the ENCORE After Party, chaired by Lauren Randle, joined the Ball crowd to carry on with a festive, late-night celebration featuring the music of DJ Little Martin. THE PURPOSE: Chaired by Jennifer and Benjamin Fink, it was also the first Opera Ball with the new CEO and General Director Khori Dastoor. The Music and Artistic Director is Patrick Summers. Teresa and José Ivo chaired the luxe silent auction. The Opera Ball raised over $1.25 million to support the internationally renowned performances and community programs that distinguish HGO as one of America’s most outstanding opera companies.

THE SETTING: The Helping Hand Society celebrated the 79th annual Crystal Ball with a brunch and fashion show, followed by the black tie Debutante Presentation Gala at the Palmer Events Center that evening. The evening raised more than $1.4 million in support of its mission to provide a nurturing and therapeutic home for children and to restore each child to a healthy family setting. The goal is to protect and restore the lives of victimized children so that those without hope may reclaim their futures. President Ballard noted that HHH is in the final stages of constructing the newly expanded campus. It will include eight new children’s homes, a conference and learning center, a permanent charter school facility, the capacity to double the foster care and adoption program, and the renovation of the current campus facilities.

THE SETTING: Planning any event requires a true ringleader, yet The DoSeum’s 7th Annual Birthday Bash fully embraced the big top lifestyle. The seven-ring circusthemed event was the museum’s first gala held in person at The DoSeum since 2019 and welcomed over 350 guests seated at tables placed throughout the museum’s galleries. Patrons unleashed their inner party animal alongside VIP guests from The San Antonio Zoo. During cocktail hour, attendees enjoyed elevated carnival cuisine and afterward danced the night away in support of childhood education. THE STYLE: Acrobats, fire artists, and amazing animals helped guests celebrate at this chic circus. Supporters who attended the gala savored carnival fair favorites of hamburgers, corn dogs, and smoked turkey kebabs provided by The RK Group. Paired with the evening’s meal was the event’s signature drink, Pink Elephants, a refreshing cocktail blending vodka, pink lemonade, and lime. Illusions and Caplan Miller Events provided the evening’s big top decor. Guests competed in classic games, including Plinko and Ring Toss, for a chance to win generous prizes donated by Saks Fifth Avenue and Bohanan’s Prime Steak and Seafood. THE PURPOSE: Co-chairs and education advocates Adrianna Grossman and Ashley Quintanilla raised over $400,000 to support The DoSeum’s mission of equitable, joyful, hands-on learning for all. The DoSeum is a socio-emotional learning laboratory and a resource for caregivers and educators alike. Its current focus is supporting childhood education recovery after two years of interruptions and modifications. During his remarks, DoSeum CEO Dan Menelly shared, “It is critical community leaders and childhood education advocates come together and direct our attention to ensuring every learner maintains access to equitable, experiential learning resources like those found at The DoSeum. We continue to center conversations around the invisible learner, our role in shaping the future of childhood education, and cultivating both a STEM identity among children and a museum identity for caregivers. THE SETTING: The Junior League of Dallas hosted its Centennial Gala, presented by the Sewell family, in the Chantilly Ballroom at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. Led by Centennial Cochairs Andrea Cheek and Margo Goodwin, the 1920s Art Nouveau-inspired soirée was the celebration of the century. The evening’s festivities served as the exciting conclusion to the League’s week-long celebration of its 100 years of service to the Dallas community. THE SETTING: Recently, guests enjoyed a beautiful spring evening at the annual Bayou Bend Garden Party to support the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. At twilight, the attendees gathered in the gardens of the historic Ima Hogg historic estate for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres under an extravagant tent featuring décor by The Events Company that included crystal chandeliers donned with greenery and lavender blooms. THE STYLE: Everything about the event was ideal for the theme of a spring evening garden party. Tables were dressed with lavender-hued linens. The delicate floral arrangements of rosy pinks, lavenders, and magentas, and chargers with butterfly designs perfectly complemented the theme of this year’s event, the butterfly. Dinner was catered by City Kitchen and included summer melon salad with purslane, Jamon Serrano, pine nuts, basil gastrique, and shaved manchego; pinto bean cake; warm cabbage and celeriac slaw and jumbo asparagus; and grilled red snapper filet with olive oil, Meyer lemon, shallots, and capers finished with a chocolate pecan tart and Amarena cherry gelato. After dinner, guests danced the night away to live music by the David Caceres Band. THE PURPOSE: This year’s soirée raised $533,000 for the Bayou Bend operating budget. Remarks were made by Gary Tinterow, Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, followed by Jim Miller, the managing director for the Tanglewood Corporation. Earlier that weekend, the 5th Annual Bayou Bend Fashion Show Luncheon raised and additional $423,000, with The Galleria/Simon Property Group as the Principal Underwriter.

THE STYLE: The Austin-chic crowd sported a fun mix of bright, beautiful colors and classic white ensembles that created a vibrant, welcoming environment for all. As guests arrived during the cocktail hour, partygoers sipped spirits from one of the many generously stocked bars and sampled bites from several Havana-inspired food stations featuring delectable bites including empanadas and Cuban sliders. The action then moved to the open-air tent that was erected on the grounds of Camp Mabry for the main program. As the attendees continued to sample the delicious Cuban fare, they were treated to words from the organization’s leaders like EASB President Caroline Smith, as well as touching tributes and testimonials, including a mission video that highlighted a year in the life of an NICU nurse. Emcee and media personality Anne Hudson Andrews effortlessly kept the evening moving along at a brisk pace and foregoing a live auction, helmed a mobile give to raise more funds. The night was capped off with an after party where revelers danced the night away to the tunes of popular, Texas-based band, Memphis Soul. THE PURPOSE: The event, co-chaired by Lauren Smith Ford and Katie Owen, raised a record $1.5 million. The proceeds that were raised from the event will support programs, building and equipment needs for Mother/ Baby services, and The Marialice Shivers and Dell Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at The Kathryn Frances Walker Center for Neonatal Intensive & Family Support at Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin.

THE SETTING: Recently, Dallas Summer Musicals announced a name change to “Broadway Dallas” as well as its 2022/2023 Germania Broadway Series Season at the opening of an exciting new Spotlight Dinner Series of fundraising evenings generously sponsored by PNC Bank. Ken Novice, Broadway Dallas President and CEO, served as host for the first Spotlight Dinner on the stage of Music Hall at Fair Park. The intricately curated program was imagined and executed by Hamilton A. Sneed of HAS Events. THE STYLE: Starting in the elaborately decorated Music Hall lobby and in celebration of the upcoming show announcement of My Fair Lady, Act One had guests sipping on British-inspired cocktails paired with passed hors d’oeuvres. Riley Jones, a student from the Broadway Dallas High School Musical Theatre Awards program, entertained during Intermission with a solo performance of I Could Have Danced All Night. For Act Two of the evening, the attendees dined on a four-course meal inspired by the 2022-2203 Broadway Dallas season. The evening concluded with the curtain lowering and rising again with an encore bow, lights, applause, and a champagne toast to celebrate the announcement of Moulin Rouge! as the theme for the Broadway Dallas Gala to be held in April 2023. THE SETTING: Recently, over 650 guests attended the Alley Theatre’s 75th Anniversary Ball, An Evening at the Starlight Room at The Post Oak Hotel, raising a record $1.9 million for the organization’s artistic, educational and community engagement initiatives. As guests dined on a delicious, multi-course meal, capped off with desserts courtesy of Tiff’s Treats, they were treated to words by the Andy Roddick Foundation leaders and a series of heartwarming testimonials. Next up was a spirited live auction that featured such coveted items as a VIP experience at the U.S. Open, an excursion to St. Barth’s, and a tennis clinic with Andy Roddick. The festivities were capped off by a performance by Grammy Award©-winning singer and songwriter Leon Bridges, who brought down the house with his many hit tunes. THE PURPOSE: The event, chaired by Leon and Tiffany Chen, raised nearly $1 million for the Andy Roddick Foundation. These funds will enable the organization to invest resources in critical outof-school programs and expand opportunities for all young people until opportunity knows no color or ZIP code.

Kindness Abounds Art of Kindness Kicks Off Two-Day Festival With Party At The Pershing By Rob Giardinelli | Photography by Ben Porter

THE SETTING: The Pershing, a private club in Austin, was the recent setting for an evening that kicked off two days of fundraising for a very worthy cause. Over 150 of the city’s most notable sociables, VIPs, and philanthropists arrived at the Art of Kindness Kickoff party. They were treated to a fabulous evening those fortunate enough to attend will not soon forget. THE STYLE: The fun mix of cocktail and Austin-chic attire exuded a kind and welcoming environment that could be felt from the moment the guests walked up to the Pershing to pose for photos in front of the large-scale Art of Kindness light installation at the venue entrance. Once inside, all sipped on spirits during a fun and lively cocktail hour, became acquainted with old friends and made new ones. Guests then gathered in front of the venue’s stage for the evening’s program. Highlights of the program included words from the organization’s leaders and touching video tributes. A live auction followed where guests bid on a series of stellar items, including a trip to Costa Rica, an ATXclusive Package, and a Flight to Space courtesy of World View. The festivities for the evening were capped off with dancing courtesy of tunes by DJ Cassandra. The evening set the tone for the second day, held at Easy Tiger, where the organization distributed 1,500 vouchers to children from Title 1 schools for a community-focused, festival-style event. THE PURPOSE: The two-day event, co-chaired by Lisa Jauregui and Loreal Sarkisian, raised over $620,000 for The Kindness Campaign. Funds from the event will create and provide accessible mental health programs for children and adults in homes and classrooms. The organization’s core message, I AM ENOUGH, is driven by four core pillars: self-image, emotional awareness, empathy, and community.

Fiesta, Family, Tradition If you live in Texas, there is a good chance you’ve heard of Fiesta. A 10-Day Celebration of San Antonio’s rich and diverse cultures, Fiesta began in 1891 as a one-parade event to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. With a much anticipated and celebratory return to San Antonio's beloved Fiesta events and traditions, The Order of the Alamo presented an elegant coronation of its Queen and her court, The Court Of The Grand Tour, in a dazzling ceremony staged at the enchanting Majestic Theater. This year's theme transported spectators on an epic visual adventure that paid homage to the historic Grand Tour tradition of 18th and 19th century Europe.

A rite of passage for aristocratic young men and women of England, those who embarked on a Grand Tour after their graduation would ride luxury carriages throughout Europe for three to four years on a journey to further their cultural education. were inspired by extensive research and honored several cities of the Grand Tour, as well as iconic architecture and crafts from each stop—from the Alhambra of Granada, Spain and the watches of Geneva, Switzerland to London’s Westminster Abbey and Italy’s famed glassmakers.

The Mistress of the Robes, Alicia Brusenhan, worked tirelessly alongside dressmakers to bring the elaborate vision to fruition. Under Brusenhan's leadership, the creative team began designing the court’s 26 Queen, Princess, and Duchess dresses and robes for many months before the coronation ceremony. ZLING BUDAPEST Europe’s remarkable destination, Budapest, has attracted the world’s attention since the Roman Empire...and its appeal remains as current as ever. See history come to life in a magnificent feast for all the senses, as our global traveler Ashley Dobson discovers.

FOUNTAINS OF YOUTH In the spirit of adventure, I set out to discover Pest, the city’s more vivacious half. Here, delightful restaurants and cocktail bars are tucked into repurposed ruins, along with fabulous shopping and, of course, Budapest’s crown jewels, the thermal spas. The Szechenyi Spa Baths are the most luxurious way to spend a day in Budapest. It was an easy way to escape real life as the naturally warm water swirled around us for hours. However, if you are a regular spa-goer, Szechenyi will be quite a different experience. There is no soft woodwind music playing in the central area, and the thermal treatments are enjoyed in large shared baths. Despite the communal ambience, the spa offers highly personalized attention. Attendants graciously helped us find our way around the enormous spa. Szechenyi is one of the largest spa baths in Europe, with 15 indoor baths, three outdoor thermal pools, and a stunning gold-colored palace containing rows and rows of private cabins. A world-class indulgent experience like Szechenyi draws more than just travelers. Locals, too, swear by the water’s healing powers ,and many go out of their way to enjoy a daily soak in the thermal pools. Our local guide couldn’t wait to tell us stories of the people she knew who had been healed by the baths. From infertility to cancer, these magical waters potentially have restorative properties for everyone. In fact, as a healthy-looking woman walked past us in her bathing suit, our guide asked me to guess her age. I thought she was about 55. But the truth is she was in her seventies and had been soaking every day for 30 years. So, if you’re looking for the fountain of youth, you may find it in Budapest.

On one side of the river, you have the Buda side, known as the Castle district, with historical monuments as far as the eye can see. The other side, Pest, is more lively, featuring some of the city’s most famous attractions. The Danube River, connecting the two halves, flows like the beating heart of the city.

IN ROYAL COMPANY In Budapest, history comes to life right before your very eyes. Vestiges of the Holy Roman Empire can still be found near signs of the 17thcentury Turkish occupation. Of course, the Austrian Hapsburg dynasty’s reign over the region figures prominently in Pest’s architecture. The historic Jewish districts tell the story of World War II, and remnants of Communist rule remain in the austere design of buildings from the 1980s. Still growing, the city is working on adding a series of modern buildings to its skyline. Hollywood is quite familiar with Budapest’s allure and has shown the city a new wave of tourism. The Grand Budapest Hotel, set in the fictional Republic of Zubrowka, sent people to the city searching for similar experiences. Likewise, the July film release of Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris is also set in Budapest. Travelers visiting Budapest will undoubtedly enjoy soaking up the culture and quite literally relish a soak in one of the city’s famed thermal spas. I dipped my toes in both on this Eastern European adventure.

TO DINE–SO DIVINE It was hard to say goodbye to the relaxing waters, but the call of our stomachs demanded to be answered. The food scene in Budapest is one we didn’t want to pass up. With a myriad of renowned restaurants and a food culture centered on meat, the hearty use of paprika, and lots of baked desserts, my husband and I knew we could both find something to love. The Michelin-starred Onyx Restaurant offers a take on Hungarian food that is almost too pretty to eat, with the presentation being just as important as the food itself. The tasting menu was the perfect sampling of what they had to offer. Onyx also shares a roof with the worldfamous Café Gerbeaud confectionery, an added bonus for anyone with room left for a sweet treat after their meal. Robinson Restaurant in City Park, down the street from the Szechenyi Baths, is the

best place in Budapest to get a great steak. The restaurant’s sommelier, Masciuch Béla, really knew his wines and offered fantastic recommendations. Monk’s Bistrot, located just off the bank of the Danube River, is the place to enjoy a dish of lamb or suckling pig. The cozy atmosphere was great for conversation. A TOAST TO BOAST Hungarians have a lot to be proud of, yet there is nothing they pride more than their wine. The vast majority of the vineyards and winemakers do not export wine out of the country, so it is a luxury not many foreigners get to enjoy. For the best wine tasting experience in Budapest, there is simply no better spot than Faust Wine Cellar. Tucked away underground in Buda’s castle district, behind the stunning Matthias Church, and underneath the Hotel Hilton Budapest, Faust Wine Cellar is an exclusive experience. With only five tables and two reservation times per day, getting a seat at the cellar can be difficult. But the intimate setting ensures just the right amount of personalized attention and, even better, access to the most exclusive vintages. Hungarian wine is the stuff of legends, literally. While sipping a bold red wine, properly called Bikavér, but commonly known as Bull’s Blood, my husband and I were regaled with tales of how the wine got its name. According to one legend, the name came about while the Turks were trying to invade the town of Eger. To give themselves the strength and courage to fight during the siege, the people of Eger drank red wine. The red color of the wine stained their beards and armor, and the invading Turks thought they had been drinking the blood of bulls. The Turks withdrew in fear, and the Hungarians prevailed. Sitting underneath the historical Castle district and drinking a cup of “Bull’s blood,” Budapest made me feel like a fierce warrior ready to take on anything. FLOATING ON A DREAM But for a city that always leads back to the water, we realized we had eaten all of our meals on land. So on our last night in Budapest, we decided to try one last unique experience. We booked a candlelight dinner cruise down the Danube River on the Legenda Boat and watched the sunset over the water, illuminating the city’s famous landmarks against the night sky. Our time in Budapest had flown by too quickly. As dinner ended and the Legenda started back to the dock, I wished the boat would slow down. I wasn’t ready for our trip to end. Drifting along with the current, I replayed memories of our trip in my head as we passed back by each location...the Chain Bridge, Hungarian Parliament, Buda Castle. Each one made me smile, and I knew I would be sharing memories about this trip for months to come. I also knew I couldn’t let this be my last time in Budapest. My husband was thinking the same thing. “When we come back here,” his next sentence started. I was grinning too hard to register the rest of his sentence fully. I only had one reply, “I can’t wait.” So, give yourself the pleasure of experiencing Budapest. You, too, will soon find yourself planning a return voyage to this magical city.

• You must see the immensely impressive State Opera House. If you don’t have time to enjoy a performance, be sure to at least go inside and admire the grand décor. • Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts features an impressive collection of Dutch, German, and French art from the 15th to 19th centuries. It is also home to the second largest collection of Spanish painters after the Prado in Madrid. • The Hungarian Parliament is one of Europe’s oldest legislative buildings. It is the largest building in Hungary and the highest building in Budapest. • Matthias Church is simply breathtaking. Located in the Buda’s Castle District, this Roman Catholic Church was constructed in the Gothic style and includes a tile roof with mosaic tiles that can only be found in one other European city, Vienna, Austria. The church also has its own legend surrounding it, the “Mary-wonder.” In 1686, during the siege of Buda, a wall of the church collapsed due to cannon fire. A Madonna statue was hidden behind the wall and was revealed in the fall.
