From the editors Here’s the thing about socks and sandals: it’s an abhorred practice that can get you banished from absolutely any worthwhile place in Brisbane, because it just ‘aint fabulous anymore bro. Nah just kidding! It was never fabulous. But by the time you reach the end of this little magette, you might find that we have indeed, brought the sexy back. You’re welcome Brisbane.

“embrace your funky personality and rework a classically daggy semblance” But don’t make us slap you because you picked us up thinking this was actually a publication devoted to the fine art of wearing socks with sandals. I’m sorry honey, it’s just not going to happen. Although, you will notice that the lovely ladies gracing our cover are indeed wearing the *gasp* socksy sandal combination! We thought it was a fantastic statement on how easy it is to embrace your funky personality and rework a classically daggy semblance. Because while there may be these social rules stopping you from rockin’ the red cowboy boots a la Ted Mosby, we say phooey, and rock away my child. As Brissy youth, we don’t seem to realise the power we hold in our tiny Gaga-gloved hands. We can do whatever we want, as long as we have a smile on our face, holes in our wallets and gin in our tonic. Brisbane youth are a lively, diverse bunch and this city’s offerings for them are rapidly expanding and evolving. With new cutting edge fashion boutiques, restaurants, bars and cosmetic counters popping up every month, Brisbane has never been a better place for fun-hungry big kids. Socks & Sandals showcases the best of Brisbane’s fashion, beauty and lifestyle; so there’s something in here for everyone. With a vibrant team of students on hand, we bring you the first of hopefully many issues of Socks & Sandals, so thanks for picking us up, and we hope you have a swell day!

NOT SO ELLEMENTARY Writer | Sonya Harris

I want to be gal pals with Elle Fanning. Not only because we share the same birthday, but because she has morphed into the loveliest teen star of her generation. Elle’s a sunshine, lollipops and rainbows kind of kid who’s been thrusted into a notoriously cutthroat industry behind the revered shadow of her older sister Dakota. Nonetheless, she’s sustained her cutesy spark and attained not only a filmography of illustrious roles (check out her lengthy IMDb profile) but also a favourable presence in the Hollywood style stakes. At 5’ 7”, tall for her 14 years, Elle towers over her classmates and fellow Hollywood starlets. Having grown seven inches in two years, the willowy actress is catching the critical eyes of the fashion world for all the right reasons. Prior to commencing high school, Elle’s friend list included Sofia Coppola and Karl Lagerfeld. Since then, Marc Jacobs and Rodarte’s Mulleavy sisters have fallen in love with the not so tiny teen, propelling her into the spotlight of their global campaigns. Elle’s landed glossy covers for W, Love, Gioia, ELLE Girl and Teen Vogue,

while Valentino dressed her for Vogue’s Met Ball and British “It Girl” Alexa Chung pondered: “Is it weird that I’m obsessed with a thirteen-year-old?” Thanks to her glowing goldilocks, twinkling blue eyes, youthful innocence and tonne of talent, Disney has aptly plucked Junior Fanning to star as Princess Aurora in it’s upcoming Sleeping Beauty production Maleficent. With a wardrobe fit for a fairytale, it’s unsurprising. Elle describes her personal style as “The Virgin Suicides-meets-Twiggy” and rocks cat eye glasses, boater hats, Mary Janes and knee socks. Her wardrobe is home to Prada’s platform espadrilles, an array of neon Cambridge Satchel Company bags and Chloe Sevigny’s Opening Ceremony bloomers. Though schoolboy crushes aren’t high on Elle’s agenda, the young actress isn’t shy to profess her love affair with the fashion industry. “I live for fashion,” she says. “I know all the collections by heart. I know all the models’ names.

07

While bare legs and midriffs seem to be the norm for her teenage Hollywood contemporaries, Elle sports an orange vintage Letterman jacket and cherishes her eighties Guess denim. Her school peers get into trouble for shortening their plaid skirts, but Elle has decided longer hemlines look “cuter in a weird way”. Instead of cheerleading like Homecoming Queen Dakota, her week is jam packed with ballet (four hours a day) and singing classes. Not many ninth graders learn French by choice nor cite Parisian sixties songstress Sylvie Vartan

as a style influence, but Elle’s a Francophile with a lust for something other than Hollywood’s glitz and glam. Then again, she has a girl crush on Marilyn Monroe and won the golden gal’s actual face cream and powder at an auction her grandmother took her to. “It’s literally the best thing ever,” Elle declares. It’s unusual to look up to a 14 year old, but Elle has a quirky quality about her that differentiates her from Hollywood’s mass of contrived child stars. In spite of her extraordinary creative achievements, Elle lists her favourite school subject as science and gets a new Barbie calendar for her bedroom wall every year (which is adorned with Marilyn Monroe posters). She’s a breath of fresh air who embodies the rare combination of substance and style. If you don’t yet agree, please embark upon an “Elle Fanning” YouTube search. Giggles are guaranteed.

I live for style.com. When I see someone wearing something I’m like ‘Spring/summer 2007?’ I recognise it straight away.” Dakota admits: “She’s the go-to fashion person in the family. She has a real passion, and it’s not at all in a materialistic way. She genuinely appreciates the workmanship and creativity.”

eing a long-term multi-tasker in life definitely has benefits. The world offers so many opportunities for amazing experiences that we’ve become a fast paced generation of go-getters, permanently attached to our portable electronic lifelines. Note: I must Instagram every detail of every day. As a full time uni student, store manager, tutor, reader, girlfriend and fashion enthusiast (along with the countless other identifiable categories I belong to), I am constantly on the run and under the belief that if I’m not partaking in at least four activities at one time then I may possibly drop dead. There are two things that allow me to maintain this lifestyle (and my sanity). The first is a blood stream predominantly comprised of caffeine, fuelled by my skinny latte addiction. The second is access to the internet on a 24 hour basis courtesy of the one true love of my life – my iPhone. As much as I love to spend an hour or a day perusing stores and juggling bags, I just don’t have the time or patience to do so anymore. Online shopping has been around since the introduction of big names like Amazon and Ebay in the midnineties, but speaking in more recent terms, we now have access to a wide variety of stunning online boutiques that offer just as pleasurable an experience shopping a la cart, if not better. The

beauty of online shopping lies not only in the oftendiscounted prices, the up-to-date styles or even the store-to-door delivery, but the chance to find the products we really want and ability to compare a wide range of stores and prices before making a decision (virtual window shopping). The pièce de résistance is that I can do all of this on the bus to work – thanks iPhone. Fear not ladies, you need never make a regretful shopping trip ever again. To achieve the full benefits of online shopping and find the best shoportunities available, I find it best to integrate store searching with fashion blog reading. What better way to discover on trend styles and stores than from the trendsetting bloggerati that have the ability to make everything look fabulous? Personally, I have very eclectic style, so my bookmarks are littered with a diverse assortment of beautiful bloggers from all corners of the world. However, just because the internet opens the door to international style, it doesn’t mean we should neglect what we have a little closer to home. If you’re interested in joining the online fashion revolution or already have and are seeking new inspiration, do yourself a favour and check out my favourite examples of the cream of the crop when it comes to filling up your mailbox.

Beautiful Treasures Writer | Sasha McDonald

Recently launched by the highly driven and fabulous Sonya Harris, BELÁ TESORO is a Brisbane-born online e-boutique that is a must for any accessory devotee. It was founded on the philosophy that “the small details speak the loudest” and we think Sonya has definitely hit the mark. The name of the store itself is a Portuguese/Spanish translation of Beautiful Treasures, and is a crystal-clear reflection of the charms available at ridiculously reasonable prices. The website envisions the BELÁ TESORO customer as a lady that “never leaves home without her beautiful treasures and a slick of lipstick. She collects trinkets on her travels and sees beauty in the unexpected… A striking style chameleon, she dresses according to her mood. She’s a creative soul who dreams larger than life with her head in the clouds and a spring in her step. Enchanting, effervescent and starry-eyed, the BELÁ TESORO

lady is an all-Australian sweetheart you can’t help but adore”. I’m sure there are parts of that character that we can all identify with, and there are certainly pieces on the website that will appeal to all of us. The eclectic range of accessories for sale means that everyone will find a new treasure to fall in love with. If you love bold but simple pieces, we recommend the Azul Ring ($35.00), the Prado Earrings ($29.00) and the Isoceles Necklace ($30.00).

No matter what your style, BELÁ TESORO is sure to have something that will add a little magic to your outfit. The website has a beautifully composed lookbook that encapsulates the overall feel of the collections, with a whimsical and dreamy styling that is sure to lull you into a mood of accessory adoration. A girl’s jewellery box has forever been a sacred storage place to keep her most special trinkets. It seems that now, more than ever, the benefits of an excellent gem collection are coming to light. Even through recent periods of minimalistic fashion trends, the idea of statement jewellery has lingered, and we continue to acknowledge the power of a great necklace or some fantastic earrings to change an outfit from average to awesome. Where better to look for such jewels than the up-and-coming accessory website, BELÁ TESORO.

Is There Such Thing as Intelligent Fashion? Writer | Rachel McGann

FASHION | Feminism and Fashion

I’ve come to dread social introductions. It’s not a fear of the interaction, but the inevitable aftermath. When meeting someone new, names are often 16 shared along with the other’s earning or learning circumstances. On paper, this sounds simple, but the quasi sympathetic reactions often resemble those at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. “Hi, I’m Rachel, and I study polka dots,” and cue the commiseration. Up until this point, it has been a level playing field. We’ve probably shared similar taste in music, giggled over our mutual friend’s rustic décor or possibly (and in this case, most significantly), complimented the other on their attractive new shoes. It is only once my non-fleeting interest in design aesthetic or clothing consumption is established that the mood changes. I’d like to know - at what point did an assumed level of intelligence or ambition and a creative interest (particularly, fashion) become mutually exclusive?

“Hi, I’m Rachel, and I study polka dots.” Cue the commiseration. Fashion is not folly. Nor does a career in the industry have to guarantee a low income or require minimal brain activity. The many factors contributing to its significant place in society are often overlooked. Fashion creates pleasure, jobs and the obvious functionality of clothing. You only need to flick through magazines from the 1980’s to appreciate the power that women can exert through dress. Fashion design ensures the continuation of historical and cultural practices, while economically, the multibillion dollar industry boosts economies through exports, tourism and helping developing countries (case in point: QUT graduate Adele Turner’s ‘Verb – Doing Something’ project in India). Most of all, I’m tired of the idea that fashion is seen to only promote a gross lack of attention to one’s intellect. Take for example, the stereotypical academics of the world that interestingly share an ideology with the 90’s cartoon character, Daria. They believe that an avoidance of ‘fashion’ through dishevelment portrays worldly qualities, but ‘antifashion’ is as much about seeking out certain looks as any self-proclaimed fashion enthusiast.

This in turn reveals the way clothing makes significant statements about the wearer’s career, economic or cultural background. As both wearer’s and as observers of others, it seems comical that this war between subconscious and conscious thought could be any sort of unintelligent or frivolous act. The end of this article should not mark the end of the”intelligence versus fashion” debate. As enthusiasts we must equip ourselves with as much intellectual armour as possible, to fight the barrage of uneducated masses. Here is a nudge in the right direction. Formulate counterarguments highlighting the fantastic publications that do not focus on an ideal body shape, dieting, or evenad space, such as Lulam i-D, Russh, Twin and The Gentlewoman. Point out designers who disapproveof commercial ‘fashion’ trends, such as Rei Kawakubu for Comme des Garcons, the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte, Vivienne Westwood and the house of Alexanger McQueen. Shine a light on the fearless figures promoting healthy models and critical analysisof design, including Robin Givhan, Diane Von Furstenberg, Cathy Horyn, Donna Karan… Finally (although a little gender biased), ask the naysayers, in what other industries are women given such a strong voice and operate as frequently as CEOs of multinational corporations?

Famous for that cheeky smile, constant bedroom eyes and a habit of appearing topless in high fashion campaigns such as Cartier; Daisy Lowe is currently electrifying the fashion world with her curves. Perhaps best known as Gwen Stefani’s husband’s daughter, Dr Who’s Matt Smith’s on-and-off girlfriend or best friend of both Florence Welch and Alexa Chung: this temptress model has a high voltage style worth taking note of… if you dare. Daisy’s off duty style regularly consists of high slit pencil skirts, cute playsuits, midriff tops and waist hugging jeans. She has a penchant for black lace, bed hair and anything that tightly hugs her hourglass figure. To mimic her outrageous appeal choose high waisted skirts and shorts to create smooth curves and add either a black lace top or a cute midriff to finish off the look. For a toned down version, choose a playsuit that cinches at the waist and add red lipstick. Here are some options from ASOS that we’re sure you and Daisy would adore!

Can You Afford to Run a Fashion Blog? Writer | Rachel McGann

FASHION | Blogging

“With more rising to fame each year… could you make 20 a career out of fashion blogging?”

I

t is inarguable that we live in a technology driven era, many internet start-ups have grown to become entities that some could not function without. A large proportion of these major players are merely infantile; proving that the market still has significant room for new entrants. Within the fashion spectrum, prominent blogger Bryan Grey Yambao (more commonly known under the pseudonym ‘Bryanboy’) started his online presence in 2004, and Scott Schuman established The Sartorialist website a year later. Dolce & Gabbana controversially invited fashion bloggers to sit in the front row of one of their shows in 2009 in lieu of the regular posse of actresses and the fashion elite, verifying that industry figures recognise the influence of these online tastemakers. With more bloggers rising to international fame each year (and often acquiring a significant income as a result), this all begs the question; could you make a career out of fashion blogging?

In its brief history, fashion blogging has already surfaced a number of monetising trends. For example, a divide has formed between blogs that are visibly driven by commercial means; dispersing trends and showcasing beautifully photographed seasonal garments, and those that are more individual to the author; producing subjective content such as DIY posts, vintage shopping tips or promoting local designers. As successful industry figures have proven, fashion blogging is as much about juggling the creative components (the photography, creative writing, styling) as it is about building a readership through clever marketing, personal branding and gaining sponsorship deals. While the creative side may seem slightly less daunting, there are countless avenues bloggers can pursue in order to monetise their website and services. The most common source of revenue is created through advertising space. Agents can manage your sales via commission, or ads can be sold on a CPM basis (cost per thousand views). This option can be more financially rewarding for those with higher traffic. Affiliate programs with online stores provide royalties for purchases made by readers clicking through to the site from a blog. Ad content can be included in editorials (‘advertorials’) or you can host giveaways on social media by asking readers to ‘follow’ your pages as a prerequisite to entering. Some bloggers believe that they have two options – to purchase garments or to acquire them through sponsorship. This can become a grey area for the reader;

guessing whether or not a product was gifted or simply a piece that the blogger genuinely likes. Leandra Medine of Man Repeller fame receives countless pieces of free merchandise, but claims that designers are simply giving her “more content, which is nice and relieving so I don’t have to go shop. I don’t want my readers to think that I’m in it for the free goods.” Fashion bloggers also sell services through personal or online workshops, entering book publishing deals or through the sale of their own photographic prints. Tommy Ton’s photographs from his blog Jak and Jil have previously retailed for up to $2000 each. Exclusive or niche content can be monetised via paid subscriptions for access, or you could dabble in consultancy roles such as freelance writing, styling or design collaborations. New readers could also be attracted through an online store attached to your blog. Nicole Warne of the Australian blog, Gary Pepper Vintage, blogged for a short period to build an audience and then successfully launched an online vintage store. The opportunities for success and monetisation within the fashion blogging realm are as endless as the types of content that you can dream up. There is no single method or model to follow: research your favourite bloggers for inspiration, or simply follow your instinct. Tips for monetising your blog: • Advertisement sales • Affiliate click-through programs • Advertorials • Giveaways / sponsored posts • Sell services / photographs / vintage wares • Publish books / e-books

Hello Betty! Writer | Ayla Dolan

Colour Me Happy Fashion Director Sonya Harris explores the notions of colour therapy wearapy and how they can best be implemented by fashion enthusiasts.

T

he fashion universe has been given a highly saturated revamp after designers sent walking rainbows down their catwalks back in Spring/ Summer 2010/11. Fact: colour is the new black, be it bubbly brights, pretty pastels or not-to-be-missed neons. Colour psychologists have long analysed how various hues are worn to communicate a mood, while fashion stylists advise clients to wear certain colours to complement their complexion or shape. What can be overlooked is how sporting a particular colour can alter one’s frame of mind. I’m a typical Virgo – a hyperactive, fussy, critical perfectionist. Having noticed a consistent presence of blue in my fashion purchases, I began to wonder why I was so subconsciously drawn to this colour. As my research reveals, blue stimulates a chemical reaction in the brain, producing feelings of peace and tranquillity. Thus, is it possible I’ve been hooked on wearing blue, due to an intuitive instinct to balance my highly-strung tendencies with a tangible sense of serenity? Dear reader, take a peek at your own wardrobe. What colour jumps out at you? With spring in the air and summer impending, fashion retailers are churning out a kaleidoscope of vibrant colour. This business pattern corresponds with Design Options’ proclamation of the “Primary Circle” as a key Spring/Summer 2012-13 trend. The LA based trend forecasting agency says: “Energetic and striking tones of orange, exude deliberation and pragmatic intention. Grass green hues of iridescence fuse melodically with cherry red undertones creating the perfect unification.” With all the colours of the rainbow at your avail, here’s how you can dress to makeover your mood.

GOING GREEN In a 1970-spawned episode of Sesame Street, a frog named Kermit sung: “It’s not easy bein’ green”. Sorry old pal, but colour psychology theory begs to differ. Wearing green causes mental and physical relaxation, along with the alleviation of depression, nervousness and anxiety. The tree-hugging hue is said to be one of the most healing of the colour wheel, offering a soothing sense of renewal, selfcontrol and harmony. Green represents spring and new growth, so wear it when you’re embarking upon a new venture or wishing to turn over a new leaf. Fashion fans: Camille Belle, Rose McGowan TRUE BLUE My personal fave; the cool, calm and collected member of the colour wheel. Wearing strong blues stimulates clear thought, while lighter, soft blues calm the mind and aid concentration. Consequently, donning blue has a calming, harmonious affect upon the wearer’s psyche. Socks and Sandals Fashion Writer Rachel McCann also shares a wardrobe bursting with blue, attributing it to “the way that it straddles femininity and masculinity”, something she always identifies in her most comfortable outfits. Interestingly, research repeatedly reveals blue to be the world’s most popular colour. Fashion fans: Alexa Chung, Cara Delevingne LADY IN RED Oh, how this vampy hue packs a punch. It is the symbol of life, after all. Wearing red physically fires up energy and can increase blood pressure, respiration, heartbeat and pulse rates. It provides the wearer with a sense of protection from fear and anxiety, encourages action taking and delivers a hefty confidence boost. Rock racy red when you require a dosage of red carpet sass. French footwear designer Christian Louboutin made shiny scarlet soles his signature for a reason. Fashion fans: Angelina Jolie, Miranda Kerr

ORANGE CRUSH Frank Sinatra once stated: “Orange is the happiest colour”. I think he might have been onto something. Wearing orange is proven to result in increased playfulness, creativity, energy and activity. The powerful mood modifier stimulates the appetite and encourages socialising. It’s the colour of Fanta, marmalade and ripe peaches, and it’s bound to put you in high spirits. Pantone even dubbed it the colour of 2012. Fashion fans: Kate Bosworth, Isabel Lucas

PURPLE HAZE Embrace the senses of your soul with this cosmic colour - it is highly introvertive and encourages deep contemplation. FYI, Leonardo da Vinci believed the power of meditation increases tenfold when undertaken in purple light. Wearing the official colour of royalty will encourage creativity, offer a sense of spirituality and calm the mind and nerves. As gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello advises: “Start Wearing Purple”. Fashion fans: Abbey Lee Kershaw, Olivia Palermo

MELLOW YELLOW This sunny hue is your answer to a bad day’s pickme-up, instilling optimism and positive energy within the wearer. Socks and Sandals Editor Maddie Daly says: “You need to choose to be happy every day of your life and wearing yellow definitely helps me do that”. Lifestyle Director Stephanie Lim agrees: “I feel like I always wear yellow when I think I’m going to have a great day or if I’m in an extra good mood.” My nerdy advice? Wear yellow when you need to concentrate, as it activates memory, encourages communication, sparks creative thinking and stimulates mental processing. Fashion fans: Elle Fanning, Kirstin Dunst

TICKLED PINK It may be the colour of universal lurrrve (and rosé - yum), but did you know prison cells are often decked out in pink to reduce the erratic behaviour of inmates? Diana Vreeland on one occasion described pink as the navy blue of India. The colour calms and reassures emotional energies, alleviating feelings of anger, aggression, resentment, abandonment and neglect. It’s the colour of romance, so wear it when you wish to embrace your flirty, feminine side. “It’s bright, fun and bubbly,” says Socks and Sandals photographer Katie Tavares. Brisbane Nightlife Good drinks and good music. It is a basic equation for a good night around Brisbane. Stephanie Lim and Ayla Dolan have two fantastic recommendations for your next Sunday Session or Friday Frivolities

The Glen Hotel Writer | Stephanie Lim

magine drinking on the deck of one of the oldest hotels in Brisbane, and knowing that every sip is worth 147 years of history. The Glen Hotel is an awardwinning pub that not only has been able to survive, but flourish through the years. Situated in Eight Mile Plains on the corner of Logan Road and Gaskell Street, The Glen Hotel lights up as surely as a stop sign for vehicles traveling down Logan Road. A nostalgic occurrence, given that the hotel was originally the last stop into Brisbane for the Cobb & Co Coaches in the 1800s – eight miles from Brisbane. But The Glen Hotel has come a long way since its old coach stop days, having risen to become one of the largest, most diverse hotels in south east Brisbane. But aside from The Glen’s more than colourful history, what is it about the hotel that sets itself

apart from others in Brisbane? The Glen Hotel’s marketing manager Sarah Cook believes a large part of the success can be attributed to their award-winning pub, The Deck.

“The thing that sets The Deck apart from other pubs is that it is a multi-faceted area where you can feel comfortable enjoying an espresso and cake in the morning, a relaxing lunch with friends, afterwork drinks, dinner with your family, and cocktails and drinks in the evening!” Established in September 2003 as part of The Glen Hotel, The Deck has already won critical acclaim, being hailed as the best pub, club and entertainment venue by Quest Community Newspapers at its Business Achievers Awards in 2010.

“The vision for The Deck was to visually open the hotel up to the passing traffic on Logan Road. People love to come for dinner, and then stay on for a night of dancing and catching up with friends,” Cook says. Pub-goers will certainly not want to miss events The Deck has to offer, such as Ladies Night, Tuesday Trivia, the ever-popular Wednesday Karaoke, the Friday end-of-week party, and Cook’s favourite, “Sounds on Sunday” with live artists and wood-fired pizzas. A must-try for die-hard pubbers looking for an easy, endof-the-day drink complimented by great food and sounds.

onsider all the wonderful things about a successful club in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley: swanky, full of local musical talents and drinks that warm your soul. The Black Bear Lodge is a treasure that provides a smooth and careless night out for all sorts of Brisbane socialites. Walking up a dark stairwell into the cosy dim lighting of Black Bear Lodge it is hard to believe that you are just two doors down from the less than demure Bank nightclub. It has got all the nostalgic features of a charming cottage in some faraway Winter

wonderland: stag heads hanging from the walls, lush sofas, sturdy timber floors and an impressive selection of whiskey. You can hear yourself think and the floors aren’t sticky – rare luxuries in this club district. The crowd is a combination of young sophisticates and Ric’sBar kids that crave a change from The Arctic Monkeys and the yourmates-backyard-atmosphere. Prices aren’t as low as across the mall but the intimate setting is well worth a couple of extra dollars here and there. Black Bear is an all round swanky young bar and escape from the general sleaze of the Valley.

This establishment specialises in whiskey but also boasts an exquisite warm mulled wine all within a medium price range. The swanky drink in your hand cannot match the nana sweater you wear to Ric’s every week, so consider a clean-cut number with some flair and personality. It compliments the intimate, classy and romantic atmosphere that is so popular among several social subcultures found around Brisbane. For an extraordinary night out, try Black Bear for an eccentric and deeply vibrant experience.

Cocktail Of The Season: Spring Edition ‘Perfect Day’ from The Bowery 41 LIFESTYLE | Drinks

Writer | Hasting Lai

The nights are warming up, the days are getting longer (finally) and you can smell summer approaching. This means it’s time to swap your winter warmers for nights out and classy cocktails.

Perfect Day is from The Bowery’s Volume II selection and consists of Tanqueray Gin, fresh passionfruit, fresh lemon juice, sugar and bitters – served straight up.

Where to? Brisbane is swamped with bars and clubs, but it’s easy to stick to one venue and the same old Martini. But like an overstuffed wardrobe with that one lifesaving LBD, you cannot go wrong with The Bowery for any occasion.

You can certainly taste the gin but the passionfruit and lemon blend guarantees there’s no throat burning when choosing to have a “big sip”.

If you’re seeking a new spring beverage, chances are you’ll find it at The Bowery. It’s likely you’ve been there sometime; it’s classic and you probably know the cocktail selection is extensive, to say the least. The bartenders don’t sacrifice quality for the quantity either.

The fruity twist gives the drink a summery kick but stops short of being tropical. It’s fresh, a little edgy, and has potential to earn a place on your staple list. When to drink it? When you want to impress! It’s a versatile number – girls night, date night, big night – so whenever you don’t want to be caught ordering a Tequila Sunrise yet again.

PHOTOGRAPHER | Olivia Lam

The cream of the crop? Choosing one cocktail was like selecting one pair of black skinnys at a Ksubi warehouse sale – grueling. But you only need one great cocktail to start a perfect night out and The Bowery’s aptly named Perfect Day ($17) is just that.

Wear it with? A leather jacket, heeled boots, tight jeans, a whole lot of class and a touch of sass.

What does it taste like? Delish! It’s hard to find something that looks and tastes good without being 99% sugar and 1% alcohol.

It’s perfect for you if...? You don’t like to be overwhelmed with sweet drinks and appreciate being able to taste the alcohol in a cocktail. You’ll love it if you like something different and made from fresh, high quality ingredients.

Who would drink it? Abbey Lee Kershaw, Alexa Chung, Taylor Momsen.

We asked Abbey to share some of the main reasons we’re better off getting up for an early morning run on a Saturday than staying out late boozing with friends on a Friday. 1. Rising incidences of disease in Australia Abbey says if we opt for a healthy lifestyle now we can attempt to improve our quality of life into the future and avoid the rising diseases of “type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity”. Women in their 20s have youth, career and travel opportunities on their side but Personal Trainer Abbey Beiefield says it’s never been more imporant than now to focus on getting healthy. Life couldn’t get any better than when you’re in your 20s. Not only are careers beginning to jet off but you are too- to all parts of the world. You can still withstand many nights in a row of partying and those late night hamburgers. Even better, you’re body has yet to really show the effects of this. However, now more than ever is a critical time to get in shape and take control of your health, according to Personal Trainer Abbey Beiefield.

2. Preparing our bodies for lifes big changes Abbey says we need to prepare our bodies now for the strain of preganancy and menopause, “exercise, particularly weight training, allows us to increase our lean muscle resulting in a higher metabolic rate. Another benefit of weight training is increasing your bone mineral density which is very important in reducing the risks of fractures and osteoporosis which is heightened significantly after menopause”. 3. Brisbane Greets a Feast of Art Writer | Stephanie Lim

Many of us have lived in Brisbane all our lives, yet are unaware of the art the city has to offer. How many of us walk past the City Roos sculptures on George Street without a second thought as to how those pieces came to be? The A Feast of Public Art walking tour conducted by the Brisbane Greeters program is looking to change that. They showcase Brisbane artworks to tourists, while reminding home-grown locals of the art and culture this city has to offer. Starting out from Queen Street Mall Visitor Information Centre, the walking tour meanders through city streets, laneways, and cafes, showcasing close to 20 of Brisbane’s diverse and colourful range of public art over 2-4 hours. Brisbane Greeter Stephanie Drewett, 26, says the tour offers a unique opportunity for the art enthusiast to explore parts of Brisbane that would otherwise go unnoticed, even by born and bred Brisbanites. “This tour is a really great way for people to get out and remind themselves about the great things we’ve got going in Brissy”, Stephanie says. The tour features artworks such as Big feathers in Queen Street Mall, the Mirage sculpture in Brisbane Arcade, The Drovers sculptures on Ann Street, the

Felix sculpture on Felix Street, and the Venus Rising sculpture at Kangaroo Point Park. An art enthusiast herself, Stephanie explains “the A Feast of Public Art tour even goes through alleyways and burned out lanes where you normally wouldn’t even imagine you’d find art, but there they are!” Stephanie believes one of the best aspects of the tour is Burnett Lane in Brisbane’s CBD, which has been revitalised as part of Brisbane City Council’s Vibrant Laneways Project. Burnett Lane runs from George to Albert Street, and is an alternative destination featuring artworks, laneway bars and cafes that create a unique ambience. But what sets A Feast of Public Art apart from other tours in the city is the camaraderie and personal interaction between people in the tour group. “You could get a guide from overseas who is an art buff and has a great wealth of knowledge to share with everyone. It really encourages a great deal of interaction and more importantly, friendship.” The A Feast of Public Art tour is ongoing and offers both set and ‘plan your own’ tours. Interview Last Dinosaurs Writer | Kayla Clibborn

Our friendly river city has been producing quite the little prodigies of late. If there has ever been a perfect time to be young band in Brisbane, it’s now. Joining a growing and pretty impressive list of local indie talent is our very own Last Dinosaurs - arguably Australia’s answer to French legends and the band’s collective favourite, Phoenix. Last Dinosaurs’ infectious indie-pop sound has seen them sharing the stage with the likes of Foster the People, playing for sold out shows on their headline tour, and manning their very own tour in Europe and the U.K. From song lyrics channelling Serbian inventors to bringing their own pedal powered, mp3 playing, custom fixie ‘dinobike’ along to shows, the Brisbane boys are all about keeping things fun – just the way it began as a four piece high school band (jamming with the future Dune Rats, Cairos and Gung Ho, mind you). Their debut album, In a Million Years, has taken them far beyond the confines of the Brisbane river, with their EP Collections just released in the U.S. Recently nominated for a spot in The Herald Sun’s Top 5 Australian Albums of the Year, it’s no wonder we’ve had to poach the boys from the other side of the world to join the line up for this year’s Splendour in the Grass. But don’t fret, fellow Dino fans! We’re in no danger of losing them to the big fish. Kayla Clibborn caught up with bass player Sam Gethin-Jones, who assured us that Brisbane will always be home – and there’s no breaking up the growing Brisbane indie brotherhood. S&S: Which comes first – music or lyrics? Sam: We’re a very technical band. We pride ourselves on playing songs that we’ve written all of the tunes for first and spent months and months trying to refine each song. We want our parts to be as perfect as possible. A lot of the time the lyrics come only a couple of weeks before we release the songs. The lyrics are still as important as the music though, we definitely spend quite a while looking over them and making sure we’re making the point we want to express.

PHOTOGRAPHER | Taylor Perren

S&S: This album is said to ask the big questions about human nature, is that how you look at it? Sam: Sean did most of the lyrical content for the album and he’s very interested in the future and looking in the past as well. He explores a lot of that and puts himself in the position of looking back on where we are right now, or situations that have happened, in a future tense as though he was wiser and older and could give himself some advice.

S&S: What was it like to work with Foster the People? Sam: They’ve just exploded, it’s crazy how big they’ve become in such a short amount of time. In Melbourne they invited us back to their room after they played. It’s always nice to find out that a band you look up to are just regular nice guys. It was the same when we played with Foals. Foals and Phoenix are collective favourites for Last Dinosaurs, so I lost my shit when I found out we were supporting Foals. You kind of think maybe they don’t give a shit about the support band and rightly so because they’re so big – but everyone has just been so incredibly 45 pleasant.

S&S: The album was mixed by Eliot James – he’s worked with Kaiser Chiefs, Two Door Cinema Club – it must be surreal to have someone of this calibre taking an interest? Sam: It’s ridiculous! He engineered Bloc Party’s album Silent Alarm, which is my favourite album ever. We got him to do ‘Time and Place’, then he was really keen to do the rest. He was meant to be moving house and changed the date so he could fit us in! I was so shocked to find out he was that keen to work with us. He got a really great sound out of us, too.

S&S: You’re all local Brisbane boys as well – I’m told you all went to school together with the guys from The Cairos and Dune Rats as well? Sam: The whole Brisbane scene, we are very close. We’re like a brotherhood. I play drums in Gung Ho every now and then and Sean will play in Dune Rats sometimes, too. There’s no competition, it’s just completely supportive. It’s such a great atmosphere to be making music in. And everyone seems to be coming up at the same time; we’re all being played on Triple J at the moment. I think it’s a really exciting to be in a Brisbane band right now.

S&S: I caught you guys at the Tivoli when you supported Foster the People and at your launch shows in March (pictured) – the reaction of the crowd was huge. When you played Honolulu everybody went nuts. How does it feel to make an audience move like that? Sam: It’s definitely the best experience you can have in life. The rush of adrenalin when people are moving to the music you’re making definitely lends so much to your performance. If you’re playing to a crowd that doesn’t want to be there, it’s very hard to convince them that you’re worth their time. You rely on the crowd to give you some energy back. When it happens it’s a beautiful thing.

S&S: What’s next for you and the boys? Sam: We’ve had a few offers to record from overseas. It’s all so surreal. It all happened in the past two weeks or so. I think we’ll be doing a lot of planning for the rest of the year and if we could make the whole year about the album that would be incredible. I just love being kept busy by the music. Stalk the guys on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/LastDinosaurs/ The boys have regular shows all around Brisbane so follow their updates to see where they’re playing next!

LIFESTYLE | Music

S&S: During pre production you travelled to your producer Jean Paul Sung’s farm on the Central Coast. I’m sure the atmosphere and the setting had a huge impact on the album... Sam: Absolutely. We gravitate to that atmosphere. We’re all city guys in our element, so to be in a completely different environment just lends itself so much to the songwriting. There’s no phone reception so even if you wanted to distract yourself it’s very hard to do. Even when we’re doing other things we’re doing things we wouldn’t normally do – were climbing mountains or shooting rifles. It’s good to get your mind out of the norm when you want to create something.

Sourced Grocer

11 Florence Street, Tenneriffe

LIFESTYLE | Food

It’s a raft of quirky, alternative people who flock to Sourced Grocer, unwittingly the go-to-place for 46 Brisbane’s hipsters. This little, unsuspecting café is everything that is right with Brisbane at the moment; a growing city seeing the emergence of well-travelled Brisbanities stamping some of the New York and London culture onto our streets. It’s a café unlike any I’ve seen in Brisbane before. You can sit on the windowsill and people watch, or pull up a milk crate and chat with friends. This place is fresh, different and remarkably unpretentious. The owner Jerome mans the cashier and the staff are genuinely friendly. But let’s not kid ourselves. As cool as Sourced Grocer looks and feels, the main tick of approval comes from the food and this café can certainly ride to the top of your must-eat list on that factor alone. It’s a little piece of food heaven tucked away in our inner-city precinct.

PHOTOGRAPHER| Charmaine Ng Kunstkammer (of Cabinet of Curiosities)

Sourced Grocer offers an eclectic spin on homely favourites; smashed avocado on toast, roast vegies and ham on bagels, spicy chorizo beans, tummy warming soups and my personal favourite – the good old toasty. Oh, the toasty! It’s unashamedly good. Smoked ham is sandwiched between fresh sourdough bread alongside pickled onions, rich, oozing cheese and a delicious concoction of sauce. This tasty toasty alone will have you returning.

Sourced Grocer, Teneriffe

Sourced Grocer is not just a café either, it’s a – you guessed it – grocer as well. With Queensland’s freshest produce on offer, Sourced Grocer is a champion of supporting the local industry. There’s the high-quality fruit and veg you’d find only at a farmers market, deli grade meats and cheeses and a plethora of gourmet products including pasta, chutney, chocolate and ice cream. Sourced Grocer encapsulates the beautiful state of Queensland produce with a healthy dose of emerging culture. Do yourself a favour and pull up a milk crate at this local champion and, while devouring a toasty, sit back and watch the world go by.

River Quay Green Southbank

Amidst South Bank’s developments, a stroke of genius is the creation of the River Quay Green. Out front of the restaurant strip neighboring The Jetty, you can enjoy a picnic and four-pack of ciders while resting upon giant pillows and listening to the soothing sounds of a live jazz band – all while you’re barefoot and taking in the beauty of the Brisbane river. The perfect summer chill out spot.

Sourced Grocer, Teneriffe

The Jetty, Southbank

The Jetty Shop 4, Sidon Street, South Bank. The Jetty is amongst Brisbane’s best in an emerging high-end restaurant scene. Situated on the newly developed River Quay strip, the restaurant offers seating around the “captains table” – the best in the house (if the house were Brisbane). The premium river city views are a stunning sight to take in. As a package, everything about The Jetty screams classic; the décor, the service and, of course, the approach to food. With a refreshingly simplified menu there is no quandary for the indecisive customer. The options are separated into “something light”, “in between”, “mains” and “deserts” – you can’t be overwhelmed.

Photographer | FullFrame photographics. As supplied by south bank corporation

As expected from a timeless restaurant, the mains range between salmon, duck, barramundi, eye fillet and risotto. It is the eye fillet served with creamed potato, wilted spinach, caramelised shallots and port wine jus that is the ultimate in a traditionally well-loved meal. The moist eye fillet stimulates the salivating senses in your mouth during the first chew, best accompanied by a generous lashing of the rich port wine jus and a quick stroke of creamed mash. The flavours are sophisticated and unmistakably the mark of a chef who knows how to leave a foodie satisfied. The success of the main doesn’t leave you needing more, but the perfect partner to a beautiful steak has got to be a bittersweet chocolate tart. The Jetty’s tart is loud in flavour with the bitter outweighing the sweet – always the sign of the highest quality chocolate.

The River Quay Green, Southbank

Literally alongside some of Brisbane’s best new restaurants, including the incredibly popular Sydney import Popolo, it comes from the highest of recommendations that you surround yourself with great company, order a bottle of fine wine and enjoy a balmy summer evening around The Jetty’s “captains table”. Green Beacon Brewery Opening Soon! Tenneriffe Socks&Sandals’ hot tip? This place is about to setoff, offering locally brewed beer served with fresh Queensland seafood. Hidden away in the sidestreets of Tenneriffe, this will be the best spot to go this summer. Say it with me, Brisbane is coming alive!

It is definitely possible to embrace the best of what we’ve got and, to be honest, what we have is bang-on excellent. The 2012/13 Brisbane show season is shaping up to be spectacular. Strap yourself into your desk chair and prepare for crazy purchasing wars in your attempts to acquire steaming hot tickets. Based on the film of the same name, Legally Blonde is an award-winning sensation that will leave you laughing all the way to QUT’s Law Library (yerp, because we all want to wear cute beanies and share muffins at a study circle). A live review of Emma Louise – Belongil Fields, Byron Bay Emma Louise looked tiny on stage in the muddy fields of Byron Bay, dressed in her Alice in Wonderland polka dot dress, white tights, and buckled flats. The Cairns-born, Brisbane-based singer-songwriter brought her soft indie tunes to Byron to wrap up her sold out national tour, Sparks. An impressive year in the charts with her single ‘Jungle’ achieving Gold status and landing her the number 23 spot in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100, Emma draw a tremendous turnout to her afternoon festival timeslot. The 21 year old wooed the crowd in the beginning with a short collection of songs from her forthcoming album before treating us to her current single, ‘Boy’. Her live performance was a smooth, flawless delivery, laced with every bit of sweetness and whimsy that her pre-recorded tracks possess.

As Emma’s raw and honest lyrics told a story of a boy who has lost his way, the audience swayed and sang along, forgetting the torrential rain and hail threatening them from outside. Her breathy, delicate tunes did little to keep the attention of a restless crowd who made it clear they were hanging out for the sensational‘Jungle’. It is unusual for such an honest, talented, and considered artist to have her other lesser known, yet equally as worthy, tracks go over the heads of an otherwise distracted audience. However, when she gave an elated crowd what they wanted with a faultless rendition of the chart-topping ‘Jungle’, it’s clear her unknown songs won’t be unknown for long. Emma Louise is one to watch, and you can enjoy her ethereal, earthly sounds on iTunes now.

SummerBass 2012 Writer | Stephanie Lim

Hard dance fans get excited, the hard dance festival of the year is back! SummerBass festival returns on December 7th to get your body moving and your blood pumping. In the words of festival organiser Peter Hill, this year’s lineup will blow your mind! In December 2011, Asylum Entertainment and Mayhem Productions brought the hard dance community a much-needed dose of dub-step, dubelectro, trance, and numerous hard dance styles to Brisbane. This December, they’re back and better than ever before, with an amazing line up boasting international, interstate and local acts, all to the theme of ‘Summer Surf and Sun’. The dynamic company behind the Asylum and Mayhem brands is Australia’s own HardSounds artist, touring and event management. Festival organiser and director of HardSounds Australia, Peter Hill, says fans can look forward to an explosive lineup including eight international acts and some of the biggest names in the hard dance genre in the world. “We’ve locked in Hixxy, Brisk, Gunz $ Hire, Ran-D, Adaro, Mad Dog, Stimulant DJs and UK’s Dark by Design,” Hill boasts. “Interstate acts include Weaver, Adrenaline and The Saint, and we’ve still got local acts that many in the hard dance community will get excited about. This will be the largest hard dance lineup that Brisbane has ever seen, not to mention the largest lighting, visuals and laser show we have ever run.”

Featuring a huge mix of hard dance styles including UK and Dutch hardcore, freeform, hardstyle, hard house, hard trance, NRG, Frenchcore, and rawstyle, SummerBass 2012 is no small feat. Running overnight from 8pm to 5am, the festival will host three separate stages, each playing a different hard dance style at any one time. Even with the jampacked lineup, Hill assures there’s no need to worry about missing out on your favourite acts. “What’s frustrating sometimes about music festivals is the headliner clashes,” he says. “You can’t be two places at one time, so SummerBass makes sure you don’t have to be by ensuring there are absolutely no headliner clashes.” Launched in 2011, the first ever SummerBass festival hosted a lineup including the likes of Darren Styles, Kevin Energy, Sharkey, Amnesys and The Pitcher. Its success with featuring the bouncy, happy, party styles of hard dance prompted the WinterBass festival to quickly follow, focusing on the harder edge styles of hard dance. Turnouts at Asylum and Mayhem events have tripled in size over the past three years, making them Brisbane’s premier Hard Dance event organisers. So hard dancers of Brisbane - mark your calendars for December 7th, get your boardies and bikinis ready for a Summer Surf and Sun theme, and get set to party - hard dance style! This is one ticket you don’t want to miss.

Tickets are now on sale through Oztix www.oztix.com.au. Check out the SummerBass 2012 official website at www.summerbass.com.au. The Extended Holiday Skiing & Working in Canada Writer | Emily Verdouw

52 LIFESTYLE | Travel Working, skiing and partying in Canada can be the experience of a lifetime – so will you be there in 2013? And if so, will you seek the help of an agency to get you over there or got it alone? It’s about this time of the year that talk starts turning back to travel. Whether it’s the impending Uni holidays or the Christmas break from work, our minds are entwined in our next adventure. But have you considered the idea of an extended break? I’m not just talking about four weeks, or even three months – what about taking off for six months to a country that’s very existence was created in striking contrast to the sunny surrounds of Queensland? The ski & working holiday experience in Canada is on the top of many young Australian’s to-do-list. It’s the chance to grasp at the reality of what your day-to-day life would entail if you lived within the snowy mountains of Canada’s ski fields and spent your nights partying away with other like-minded travellers. So if this sounds like a fantastic experience or you’ve already got it on your mind then you’re thinking about it at the right time. Come November jobs for the 2013 ski season are released and you have the opportunity to take on an experience many describe as one hell of a time. The only problem is how do you make it happen? You now have the perfect trip planned out in your mind, but where do you start? Well look no further; Socks&Sandals has gathered all the advice you’ll

need from Canadian working holiday recruitment officer Juls Dahl and previous holidaymaker Jack. Their collective advice surrounds the ultimate argument – do you seek the help of an agency or go it alone?

GO WITH AN AGENCY!

If you asked Jules Dahl whether or not you should try out a ski & working holiday in Canada she’d ask ‘what took you so long?!’ After taking the plunge herself as a young traveller, Jules didn’t come back home for another 15 years. Now a consultant with ‘The Working Holiday Club’ (TWHC) Jules is a definite supporter of the ‘go with an agency’ argument. Just like you, Jules’ brain was full around this time 16 years ago so she decided to take off. After spending some time in a summer camp in the U.S, Jules headed north to Canada with a handy visa in her pocket. While staying in a hostel she heard about Whistler Blackcomb from a fellow traveller. “I asked how far away it was, and it was two hours so I jumped on a bus, she says. “I started out as a lifty then went into supervision and then into management. It was a circus it was just awesome, you’ve never experienced anything like it.” It’s fair to say Jules has a lot of knowledge and she says that’s the case with the whole TWHC team, they’ve been there, they know the in’s and outs

Jules advice is to contact them now if you’re looking to the 2013 season. You can take the time to save some money and get in first for the ‘good jobs’.

BACK YOURSELF!

Along with two other mates, Jack took to Big White for his ski & working holiday in Canada and was there for an entire season, which typically spans six months. “Big White is a small town compared to Whistler. You can walk from the outskirts (Snow Pine or Happy Valley) to the center of town in about 10 minutes. The town is also about an hour drive away from the nearest city Kelowna,” Jack says. Unfortunately for Jack he’s on the other side of the argument, after paying $700 to an agency he was left without a job. “After booking flights with my two mates, they both got jobs and I didn’t, he says.

“The agency guaranteed me a job, and they didn’t deliver. They gave me the $700 back but that was after I had booked flights. If you know someone over there, don’t bother with an agency, it’s all about who you know.” As Jack was left with a plane ticket he decided to take his chances and continue on with his journey to Canada, and as luck would have it he found himself with a job through a few connections from home. “My first job was working at one of the bars as a glassy and bouncer. I knew one of the guys who was working there from Brisbane. Then after a bit of searching around I ended up getting a job as a lifty. One of my friends Uncles was the head of ski lift operations there so he was able to set me up with a job and accommodation.” Jacks main piece of advice if you choose to go solo? “The season starts in November, and I would say start looking ASAP because a lot of the positions get given to regular staff.” So once you decide which option is right for you, all you have to do is start saving. Who knows, perhaps this time next year you will be hitting the slopes of Canada and sipping drinks with newfound friends at a cozy bar. Good luck! What else you need to know: Money: $10,000 will do you well

and they’re really passionate about helping others have that experience too. “We consider what you want to get out of your trip and we take that really seriously… if you want to work in a resort and get out of your comfort zone then we can do that for you. Our experience is what sells us, we can get you the job interview and you know you’ve got a job before you buy a ticket,” she says. Although Jules believes your best chances of securing a job are through agencies, she also believes you can be successful doing it solo, although it may not be cheaper in the long run. “Look at the alternative you can give us $1000 and we’ll get you a job, otherwise you can definitely arrive in Canada, rock up to Whistler when the recruiting fair is on around November and book yourself into a hostel for 7 days. You will be screened the first day, three days later an interview, then another three days later a second interview – and don’t forget you’re partying through that and you’re leaking cash- and then they may say yeah no, we’ve interviewed 400 other people and it’s not you. So now you’ve got to go to the next ski town. You never know, you might land a job, you might not.”

Why we should actually be living in the 1930s The flirty thirties: when a girls best accessories were grace, glamour and debonair. Maddie Daly finds out why every modern woman should take note from this bygone era.

LIFESTYLE | Interest Story

Let’s not pretend that we don’t look at history and think “oh phew, glad I missed that shenanigan/poor invention/lapse in scientific judgement, we have 54 it so good nowadays” because obviously modernday Australia is o’right. The young fashionistas out there are definitely relieved to have missed the faux pas that was chokers and crushed velvet a la 1992. And Jobs’ army of geeks couldn’t possibly go back to dial-up computers that require actual buttons to function (Buttons? What?) And let’s not forget about airports circa 1962 – it’s called basic security people, seriously. But let’s look at one legendary era and momentarily push the negative thoughts aside; racism, the depression, low medical advancements, that lil war that happened… And think about what actually made it awesome. Because I am telling you, if we were around Brisbane in the 1930s, we would have been so fabulous you guys. For starters, entertainment was a real industry and the people in it were revolutionaries! I’m not talking about sharing a love story between emotionless Bella and her sparkly glitter man, hmm good try. I am talking about actual performances by stars that could arouse the crowd with their fantastic showmanship and little digital assistance. The sequins and lashes didn’t hurt either. And when the ‘talkies’ reached Australia in 1930, do you know what ol’ Walt did for us? He released Snow White and introduced us to a pale red-lipped beauty who sang to forest animals and baked apple pie. So, you’re welcome Earth. But with little funds to treat your pals to extravagant outings of liquor, tobacco and one-too-many

hussies, Australians took to local adventures to show off their glamour and grace. Young women flocked to golden beaches in new mini swimsuits to frolic in the sun and delicately dip into the water. Sharks didn’t exist in the 30s, fact. And we adored local heroes like Sir Don Bradman who drew crowds of people just to see him play. Ah, a Sunday afternoon was once so elegant. Fashion was on a whole other level during the time of Hepburn and Kelly. My favourite key word here: quality. Comfort was irrelevant and they didn’t believe in casual (hulloh! Don’t you watch Boardwalk Empire?) It was like Blair Waldorf on crack, but with prettier hair and shoes. Trust me – it’s possible. Elsa Schiaparelli revolutionised style by adding zippers to her dresses (before that, people were sewn into their garments and stayed that way until the next season. True story). And then Madeleine Vionnet invented that bias-cut to give women curves and beautiful silhouettes in their daywear. I mean she basically invented fabulousness! And do you know what happened one summer when holidaying in Monte Carlo? Coco Chanel paired navy blue and white together in one outfit. Yes, I’ll pause here for your reaction. Whoa. Let’s all take note of what this bygone era has lent us in way of glamour, charm and poise. Consider what it took the marvelous icons of the 1930s to become so memorable and spectacular, because that is bound to put a little spring in your step every day. I don’t really know what I am trying to teach you here. Just walk around being fabulous in a chic-cut dress and bold red lips I guess, that’ll do the trick just fine darling.

Decorating on a Budget Writer | Emily Verdouw

In this stage of life funds can run a little low, but according to Interior Design student Tara Dennis it’s what you make of the little things around you that really creates a beautiful room.

56 LIFESTYLE | Interiors

S

tyle is perceived by many as a matter of how much you can afford, and it’s an easy way to creating a beautiful home. To Tara though it’s more to do with the process of creating beauty out of the resources you have at hand. As a creative student she needs an inspiring base to draw on her talents and has made a habit of recycling pieces that many of us carelessly throw away. “All of my pieces in my room I’ve generally changed the use of it. The glass bottles are from my local grocer and I’ve just used them to hold flowers. I have honey jars and tea cups to hold my bits and pieces,“ she says. Painted Tiny Teddies are perhaps Tara’s best use of turning hapless objects into something interesting. “I painted the Tiny Teddies for a uni assignment, and it was actually my boyfriend who convinced me not to throw them out, I spent so long on them.”

Amongst Tara’s suggestions for decorating on a budget, her key piece of advice is to think outside the obvious.

You don’t have to have new cool things, it’s about turning the things you would usually put away or throw out into something that’s interesting to the eye.

Tara explains that if you’re looking to re-create a room in your house, you’re best to start with a one or two main objects and then build on that. “If you’re going to start from nothing, then just figure out your key pieces first. I would describe myself as a minimalist with the focus on those key pieces, like my twinkle lights, they were the first thing I wanted before I worked anything else out.”

App Reviews: What’s app? Writer | Kayla Clibborn

Having faraway friends has so many benefits – travel buddies, free overseas accommodation, fun and/or hilarious accents to compare. But, as with all things, it can also have its cons. Perhaps the most troubling (and expensive) is the issue of making sure faraway friends remain friends and everyone makes the effort to stay in touch. So how do we stay connected

with our loved ones in faraway lands without terrifying phone bills? Well, as seems to be the case with most things in 21st century life – there’s an app for that! Behold! Kayla Clibborn has found the top three user-friendly AND cost-effective smart phone apps for keeping in touch with those across the pond.

What is it? Instant message anyone, anywhere, anytime – for free! There’s no download cost for all smart phones and push notifications are used to send text messages, photos and videos without any cringe-worthy overseas charges. You can also create group messages, so you could chat to your best friend backpacking in Europe and your sister on exchange in Canada all at once! Most useful for... Picture messages for cross-continental outfit approval.

Viber

What is it? This one really ups the ante from Whatsapp. Not only does Viber let you send free texts and picture messages to overseas numbers, but you can call for free too! Similar to Skype, only a little more accessible and minus the awkward “I just got out of bed” facial expression/attire care of webcams. Viber is free to download and allows you to call your jet-setting friends and family via 3G or WiFi with as much ease as when you shared a house and you couldn’t be bothered to walk up the stairs. Most useful for... Time-zone-confused drunk dialling. A hilarious 2am call from a New York City club is just what you need to amuse you on your lunch break.

Find My Friends

What is it? Okay, this one may be borderline creepy... Find My Friends is a free app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that allows you to find the location of friends or family at any given time. Yes, it does sound a little weird. However, friends must connect with each other using their Apple ID and password, and each friend must accept the other’s request before stalking, ahem, “friend finding” can begin. It’s like mutual stalking. Most useful for... Let’s be honest here. Obviously the most amusing feature of this app is being able to randomly remind your friends that you know their exact location.

Social Rant: Wear Despair Writer | Stephanie Lim

It is said that a woman’s self-confidence is linked to her self-perception – this being the internal image she has of herself. Our subconscious mind considers the clothes we wear an extension of our body, affecting and changing the internal image we have of ourselves according to what we wear and how comfortable we feel.

58 LIFESTYLE | Social Commentary

The truth is, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you feel uncomfortable in what you’re wearing, your self-confidence is likely to plummet to belowground levels. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid this from happening. Here’s how to ensure you always look stunning and feel great. Wear clothes that fit you best. Wearing clothes that are tight or constricting makes for an unflattering look, especially if you are constantly tugging and pulling at an overly short hem or tight top. These actions look to convey nervousness and insecurity. Wearing clothes that flatter, fit well and feel comfortable will only boost your self-esteem. Digging through cupboards, uprooting drawers, flinging clothing everywhere… Sound familiar? That’s because it’s the age old question folks: what should I wear!?

Dress for the occasion. A professional occasion warrants straight cuts and outfits with clean lines. A relaxed social affair suits something casual, simple and comfortable. Undertake some quick research and dress to suit the occasion.

It is something we’ve all asked ourselves at one point in our hectic (and occasionally glamorous) lives. It can be the unavoidable struggle we face of a morning, or, admittedly in my case, every day.

Be brave. Try something different. If you’ve had the same outfits for a while and they still don’t make you feel good about yourself, then it’s time for a change. (This is also a great excuse to go shopping.)

Our boyfriends think we’re silly. Our mothers think we’re mad. But ladies, rest assured, we’re neither. What our loved ones simply don’t understand is that selecting an outfit for the day goes far and beyond wearing something for the sake of it. Clothes maketh the person.

Spring clean. Dispose of the outfits in your closet you never wear (or wear just for the sake of wearing). You know you don’t like them, so get rid of them.

Numerous self-help gurus and related new age books ascertain that a woman’s confidence levels differ according to the clothes she wears. I’m sure most of us can relate – we all have that one outfit we feel most comfortable in and immediately rely on, without a second thought, whenever we have an important event to attend – be it a first date or a job interview.

Be confident. Sometimes a smile is the best outfit you can wear. Implement good posture –stand up tall and put your shoulders back. Your body will naturally exude a confidence of its own. Whatever the circumstance, keep these easy-tofollow guidelines in mind and they will cut your “wear despair” time in half.

Beauty Predictions Writer | Anjali Raj

Make-up King Naploeon Perdis sets the tone for this season’s beauty trends...and it’s going to be HOT! It’s not only heating up temperature-wise as we come into Spring... it’s also heating up in the world of beauty! As designers begin to unveil their Spring/ Summer 2012/13 collections on the runways, makeup brands also prepare to launch their new collections and products as soon as the mercury rises. Napoleon Perdis’ makeup products were some of the first to light up the catwalk this season in the David Jones SS12/13 show which featured homegrown beauty Miranda Kerr. Not only did we get to sneak a peek at the hottest clothes for the upcoming season, the hottest make-up looks to accompany them were also showcased. And if the makeup guru Perdis’ look predictions were anything to go by, big bold colour is set to be a big bold trend this season. Colourful matte lip and bright playful washes of eye shadow ruled the DJ’s runway. In terms of colours for the collection, he was inspired by the garments he previewed for the season, noticing a strong trend for saturated primary colours, especially bright reds, oranges, and pinks. He reflected this in the 2 makeup looks he specifically designed for the show by featuring two strong lip hues; a matte orange and a matte red. In terms of eye colours, Perdis opted for the ontrend pastel palettes this season, showcasing powdery blue and soft spearmint. His trick was adding some white into both hues to keep it chalky and totally matte.

Although mixing bold primary colours and dusty pastels can seem a tad intimidating at first, Perdis claims it’s an easy and rewarding makeup look. ”The clash of pastels against the red and orange lips is a really modern way to wear colour… just keep it matte” he says.

Scents and Sensibility Kira Donohue uncovers how to choose the perfect perfume for specific occasions and why it’s not always your signature scent.

76 BEAUTY | Perfume 101 Upon embarking on an overseas trip recently, one of the last things my boyfriend said to me as I was leaving was “I’ll miss the sheets smelling like you”. Funny isn’t it, how our character can become embodied within a single scent?

“We all know that wearing our newly purchased dress can do wonders for our confidence, and I have found that a new perfume can have the same effect.”

My first foray into the forbidden world of perfume came when my friends and I were (finally) allowed to go shopping alone and we stopped by the chemists where an array of shiny bottles housing all sorts of smells greeted us. From the very first spray, I was hooked.

We would douse ourselves with every scent imaginable (much to the staff’s delight, I’m sure!) until we would come out smelling like a thick and heavy concoction of musk, sandalwood, orchid, pomegranate and citrus. I guess we thought our scents resembled some type of beautiful and exotic flower. Over time, I have dabbled with scents, until I found one that has served as my signature for years (Dior J’Adore, thanks for asking). However, as much as I treasure this scent, sometimes it just doesn’t hit the mark and I can find myself in need of an extra ‘kick’ for specific occasions. I have spritzed Marc Jacobs Lola and been oh-so-deliciously fun and flirtatious for a night out. DKNY has afforded me the kind of street chic usually reserved for

I wasn’t a girl who grew up admiring my mother’s dazzling array of glass perfume bottles on her dresser, watching wide-eyed as she got dressed for a night out, spritzing her No.5 delicately over herself. Not. Even. Close. My mother was allergic to perfume; one sniff and an almighty migraine would set up camp in her head for the next few hours. In fact, growing up, my sister and I would run for our lives if one of us ever dared to spray Impulse on ourselves for fear of the dreaded words “WHO’S BEEN SPRAYING

PERFUME?” bellowing up the stairs. Thus, the sweet smell of perfume became intricately intertwined with a certain illicitness that my thirteenyear-old self found desperately alluring.

“A perfume is like a piece of clothing, a message, a way of presenting oneself, a costume... that differs according to the woman who wears it” - Paloma Picasso

the streets of New York. For a romantic date night I choose Valentino Rock n Rose. And at my last internship I couldn’t go past Jo Malone Orange Blossom to instil me with all the things we are supposed to be upon entering the real world; elegant, mature, sweet but with a little bit of the zest and enthusiasm of childhood tucked away in there somewhere. You may say I am a bit of a perfume whore, and you would probably be right. While I am all for a signature scent, I firmly believe in mixing it up from time to time. I implore you to discover the world of perfume and take advantage of the vast array out there begging to adorne you for

the perfect occasion. And if you are headfast on a single signature scent, I will leave you with one lingering thought: When it comes down to it, just like choosing the perfect man, how do you know a scent’s ‘the one’ if you haven’t really explored what’s out there first? Just saying.

DIY Emergency Eyebrows Writer | Jane Buckle

Getting your brows routinely waxed is an expensive habit. If you’ve ever accidentally waxed off half your eyebrow, or gone overboard with the plucking, listen up! We’ve sought the help of beauty therapist Claire Simpson to share some DIY tips when you don’t have the time or cash to have a professional tame them for you. All you need is your hands, a mirror, tweezers and some patience.

First rule is golden; start with a clean and exfoliated face. Claire says, “You’ll find it easier and maybe even less painful to pull the hairs out if your skin isn’t greasy”.

Use your fingers as a guide 1. Use your index fingers to form a straight line from the outer sides of your nose straight up to your brows. Consider anything in between your fingers ripe for the plucking! 2. Next stop is to place your index finger on the tip of your nose and draw a diagonal line from across your pupil. Generally, this is where the arch of your brow should reside. 3. Unless you have strays above your eyebrow, try to keep the plucking to just underneath. Claire suggests using concealer to mark where you want to remove stray hairs. This way you will be less inclined to overpluck!

Check yourself before you wreck yourself Throughout the process, make sure you step back from the mirror regularly to double-check you haven’t gone too far and that each brow is symmetrical.

Extra tips Claire recommends you look at photos online of celebrities with similar brows to your own. “Just remember,” she warns, “You can only work with what you already have. Don’t be too ambitious!”. IMAGE | FreeDigitalPhotos.net

If you too believe brows can be the most striking part of your made up face, Claire also encourages investing in a good brand of eyebrow liner to tastefully shape and colour in the brows. Dipping a brow brush in hairspray and combing them carefully over the hairs will help girls with thicker eyebrows. We strongly recommend Pola Cosmetics’ Eyebrow Pencil available in Grey and Brown $35 (right).

Dear Auntie Jack An actual advice column

Darling B. D. Essem, I’ve received a lot of correspondence about this fantastically well-written series. It may take a strong act of romance to bring out your boyfriend’s inner Grey. Try some kinky names, or perhaps you could tie him down and gag him.

80 Life Advice Photos Of Romantic Nudity Dear Auntie Jack, I’m in an online relationship with a guy who is a few years older than me (I’m 18) and things are getting pretty serious. He’s in Adelaide so there is no physical relationship.

A personal favourite scene of mine is in chapter 27. Sneak into your man’s bedroom when he is asleep and rouse him with a delicate beating using a leather strap. If he cries out in pain or passes out, it means he likes it. This technique worked wonders for my love life – just ask my ex-girlfriend. Sincerely, Auntie Jack Gorgeous And Young Dear Auntie Jack,

Should I send him some naked photos? I haven’t done anything like this before but I really want to move our relationship to the next level. - Online Lover, 18

I’ve been emailing you for quite some time now and I’ve yet to receive any response. I yearn for you. My feelings are like a wave of passion that makes my heart ache with unrequited love.

Darling Online Lover,

The mere mention of your name sends tingles along my skin and makes me long for a hopeful future where we can be together. I want to be held in your arms as we stare into the night sky and count the stars. Most of all, I want to feel your warm lips upon my own as we sink into a loving embrace. - Trevor, 76

First of all, I’d like to extend my most heartfelt condolences to your boyfriend for being in Adelaide. Secondly, the most important thing to know is that these photos will leave a lasting impression, so they should show you at your best. Try wearing some risqué lingerie or using a feather boa. I recommend you send the photos to auntiejack@ socksandsandalszine.com so that I can provide more accurate advice. Sincerely, Auntie Jack Sad & Miserable Dear Auntie Jack, Like most girls my age, I’ve been reading Fifty Shades of Grey and it’s made a huge impact on my life. I’ve come to believe that I’m the spiritual incarnation of the main character, Anastasia Steele. I think my boyfriend could be my Christian Grey, but he hasn’t read the books yet. What should I do to find out if he is my star-crossed lover? -B. D. Essem, 16

Dear Trevor, Please stop emailing me. Do you have a problem with your love life? Probably. Ask Auntie Jack! Send an email to auntiejack@socksandsandalszine. com and I’ll solve your problem, 100% guaranteed!* *Not a guarantee
