The program has both public and private uses. The private space and lower level is a two bedroom cabin for scientists to use as living and work space while their stay at Mt. Wilson Observatory. The public space and top level, is a gathering space for tourists and students to use while they visit the observatory. It is accessed from the main pedestrian road and it is also a space to overlook the surrounding environment. The cabin is accessed from a separate road that leads to the main entrance. The project is made up of intersecting planes and continuous lines creating interior and exterior spaces that blend into one space.

There is a total of 14 units on the site. 7 of the units are ground-level, onestory and the other 7 are two-level, walk-up units. The units are arranged in 7 modules with each holding two units, ground level and upper level. The modules are arranged surrounding the site and creating public spaces and circulation within the site, which force the users to use interior access through the parking garage with the option of two entrances from the street. There are three types of public areas within the site that allow for different types of interactions between neighbors and community. This project was a two-quarter project, one quarter concentrated on the schematic design and the second quarter was design development of the project.

One space is more compact, urban environment between the buildings that resemble an alley or street gathering space. The second public area is a seating and play area for children to play and stepped benches for people to sit and relax. The third space is a community garden to grow crops and promote a more self sustainable lifestyle. The underground parking garage holds 26 spots with two handicap parking adjacent to the elevator from garage to ground level. There are also two set of stairs on each end of garage to access ground level.

SPRING 2015
This project was a competition that focused on sustainable design strategies for the outcome of a net zero energy building. The program included 26,000 square feet of built space and outdoor to serve as a learning environment and a connection to the Joshua Tree National Park. The design strategies I used for the design were earth sheltering as thermal mass, natural venitlation with positioning of windows in north and south façades, double roof system for shading and reduction of direct sun exposure, and a roof garden for cooling. Project Statement Taipei’s peripheral communities are neglected and decaying. Densification in the city caused by a rapid increase of population urges for an architectural intervention. Urban fringe communitues offer an alternative typology to the city, allowing for self-sufficiency, proximity to nature and a platform for future growth.
