A message for you, Each spring Socrates Sculpture Park begins a season of ambitious exhibitions, programs and activities, and each year I am thankful and honored to be a part of this very special place. I am truly grateful to the Board, staff and supporters that make it all run, to the grounds crew and volunteers taking care of our Park, and to the artists and non-profit partners that create the magnificent artworks and activities that electrify the Park with energy and love.

Yes, love — it is an intimate word to use when referring to a public place and people you may not know — but it is a word I hear often in regards to Socrates Sculpture Park. Many things can be said about the current climate of divisiveness that can insidiously infect our interactions with one another, but I am grateful to walk into Socrates Sculpture Park each day and find small and profound moments that assert our positive and creative humanity. By bringing people together from all walks of life to have a common experience, the Park acts as a catalyst of goodwill and constructive emotional and intellectual empowerment. I am more convinced by what I see and experience at Socrates than ever before and I am thankful to those who value and support this unique public park in New York City that welcomes over 200,000 people each year. Contained within this calendar is the manifestation of our ideals and collective efforts to bring people together in enjoyment. Built — an exhibition of new works by Virginia Overton; our 2018 Emerging Artist Fellowship and The Socrates Annual exhibition; the Folly/Function design-build competition in collaboration with Architectural League; performances by Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York; the 20th annual Outdoor Cinema festival programmed by Film Forum and Rooftop Films; Jazz at Socrates; art-making workshops; Brazilian Capoeira classes; and community festivals are just a few of the myriad of offerings this season. I invite you to join us this year for one or many of our events and programs — or to simply to stop by and experience the place any day of the week, 365 days of the year. Socrates Sculpture Park is delighted to present Built, a parkwide solo exhibition of newly commissioned works by Virginia Overton that refashion found materials with dynamism and potency. In succinct, elegant forms, often accompanied with wry humor, Overton addresses concepts of labor, economics, and the land in today’s society. Her material choices — fundamental elements for construction and fabrication — combined with her axiomatic approach to process, evoke narratives of self-reliance, creative constraints, and expediency. At the Park, Overton creates new iterations of ongoing series of works — an altered pickup truck,a water feature, a roof truss gem sculpture, a suspended beam, and a billboard, among others. Weaving together these works is their shared role as support structures, both in their original purpose and in their new generative articulations. The wooden beams and trusses are elements that repeat through the exhibition, revealing these materials’ multiple capacities as tools. Situated in the changing, once-industrial waterfront neighborhood of Long Island City, the works shed their former functions without nostalgia. Instead, Overton’s works exhibit the vitality of creative reuse, the ingenuity of traditional forms of vernacular making, and an entwined admiration and wonder towards the physical and material world around us. A publication with full color images documents the exhibition and provides scholarship on Overton’s oeuvre with a focus on her outdoor works with essays by Johanna Burton, Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement, New Museum; Leah Pires, PhD Candidate, Department of Art History, Columbia University; and Jess Wilcox, Director of Exhibitions, Socrates Sculpture Park. The publication is made possible by the Henry Luce Foundation. Built is organized by Socrates Sculpture Park and curated by Jess Wilcox, Director of Exhibitions. The exhibition is made possible with generous support from Lambent Foundation, the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, White Cube, and Bortolami Gallery, with additional support provided by Spacetime C.C. RRRolling Stones Opening: Thursday, July 12 • 5 – 6 PM
Presented in Partnership with The Architectural League of New York The winning proposal for the 2018 Folly / Function design-build competition for movable park seating was RRRolling Stones by HANNAH. These 3D printed concrete chairs exploit the ergonomics of chair design to create sturdy but movable chairs for all-season outdoor use. The chairs are designed to be rolled by a single person and consequently produce new seating profiles with each flip. This encourages creative interaction with the furniture and emboldens Park visitors to configure seating arrangements based on preference and need. In addition, the series can be configured a variety of ways, aggregated together as a 30-foot linear bench, in small clusters, or as solitary playful chairs within the landscape. This versatility and functionality reflects the Park’s spirit, complementing Socrates’ diverse audience and the multiplicity of activities it hosts. The RRRolling Stones were prototyped and printed at the Cornell Robotic Construction Laboratory in Ithaca, New York. This printing technique allows for mass-customization and a set of self-similar but unique seats. Executed in layers of a special mixture cement reinforced with nylon fibers, the seats’ striated surfaces reveal the process of their making.

Folly / Function is an annual juried competition engaging architects to design and build a large-scale project for public presentation at Socrates. Jointly directed by The Architectural League of New York and Socrates, the program addresses the intersection of architecture, sculpture, and public space. HANNAH’s proposal was selected from a group of international submissions by a jury of leaders in the fields of architecture and design, comprising Allan Wexler, Artist; Chee Pearlman, Curator, Arts and Design, TED Conferences; Mark Yoes, Principal, WXY; Leon Ransmeier, Designer, Ransmeier, Inc.; Nick Koster, Project Manager, Snøhetta; and Jess Wilcox, Director of Exhibitions, Socrates Sculpture Park. The Socrates Annual October 7, 2018 – March 10, 2019 Opening: Sunday, October 7 • 3 – 6 PM Each fall Socrates presents an exhibition of new commissions made by artists awarded the Park’s Emerging Artist Fellowship. Conceived for the landscape and produced on-site in our outdoor studio over the course of the summer, these artworks respond to the Park’s unique history, landscape, and community. For the 2018 exhibition, projects range from a decolonial greenhouse to audio-sculptural portraits of Queens hip-hop legends. Approaches vary among community-centered pedagogy and production, material experimentation, and redeployment of historical forms of construction, among others. This year contemporary and historical land-use is examined by several artists in projects, including a labyrinth of fences and gates, and a steel and textile installation that traces the East River ecology’s waste flows through land, water, and biological life. Additionally, several artists employ representations of the human figure, perhaps suggesting a time for reflection upon the Humanist philosophies that seem precarious with looming climate change and ongoing political conflict. Socrates’ parkwide festivals colorfully explore various themes for all ages, featuring music and performance, art-making and activities, eclectic food vendors, and community partners sharing resources and opportunities.
Queens Green Day Saturday, June 2 • 12 - 4 PM Presented in partnership with Queens Action Council (QuAC) and Hellgate Farm Join us for the first-ever Queens Green Day at Socrates! It is a celebration of all things “green”— local ecological initiatives, food justice, gardening, urban farming, and healthy living, including bike safety and advocacy. Queens Action Council (QuAC) and Hellgate Farm offer interactive presentations alongside artmaking, activities, and food demos from partners like: City Harvest, Bike New York, The Connected Chef, Smiling Hogshead Farm, Mechanical Gardens bike repair, and City Parks Foundation’s Green Girls and Coastal Classroom (head to Hallets Cove for their special seining demo!). 2018 Emerging Artist Fellows Joe Riley and Audrey Snyder will also run a natural-dye textile workshop for their upcoming installation for The Socrates Annual exhibition. On stage, we explore ways diverse cultures honor the Earth, including an Eastern woodlands Indigenous presentation by Tecumseh Ceaser, kicked off by Lauren Hale Biniaris’ performance of Hungry, which uses dance, gesture, and writing to explore the interconnected worlds of seeds, sustenance, hunger, and hope.
Summer Solstice Celebration Thursday, June 21 • 5 PM – DUSK

Summer Solstice is the longest and most light-filled day of the year, and one of our favorite days to celebrate at Socrates. Mark this midsummer phenomenon with art-making activities from The Noguchi Museum, Free Style Arts Association, and The Blue Bus Project, and join artist / storyteller Satya Celeste to transform the grove of trees into a communal art piece. On stage, we feature youth performances from 696 Build Queensbridge, and Secret Society Dance Company choreographed by Traequan Middleton representing Astoria Houses’ HANAC Cornerstone. Afterwards, catch Queens native and vocal artist / performer STEFA*’s powerful sonic layering and vocal improvisations, followed by all women drum ensemble Batalá New York’s high-energy AfroBrazilian rhythms. At sunset, gather around the hill for Urban Shaman Mama Donna’s annual waterfront Solstice ritual uniting all in reverence and positive energy. 15
Halloween Harvest Festival Saturday, October 27 • 12 – 4 PM Presented in partnership with Konfederasyon Nasyonal Vodouyizan Ayisyen (K.N.V.A) The final event of the 2018 season is our beloved Halloween Harvest Festival, which this year is inspired by Fet Gede, the Haitian Festival of the Ancestors. Vibrant cultural performance and activities will be provided by the New York chapter of Konfederasyon Nasyonal Vodouyizan Ayisyen (K.N.V.A), including a Gede song workshop, card readings, mini altars in the landscape honoring aspects of the Gede pantheon, and a procession culminating in a special dance and drum performance. Join us also for our Socrates Halloween traditions: spooky costumes and art-making, fantastical face-painting with Agostino Arts, Urban Shaman Mama Donna’s harvest animal blessings for your pets, and of course, our annual Canine Costume Contest with fun prizes and local judges, including Château le Woof and Friends with Four Paws!

Jazz at Socrates Second Thursdays, June 14, July 12, August 9 • 6:30 – 8 PM Presented in partnership with The Jazz Foundation of America Socrates and The Jazz Foundation present a fun and eclectic series of jazz in the Park! Concerts take place each second Thursday of the month on our summer events stage near the East River, and feature local food vendors. In June and July, we celebrate the legacy of Sonny Rollins with two of his direct musical heirs; in August, the series culminates with our annual birthday celebration for Louis Armstrong. Co-presented by The Jazz Foundation of America’s Gig Fund program, with support from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

R enowned trombonist Clifton Anderson has captured audiences far and wide with his rich sound, fine compositions, and unique interpretations. Perhaps best known for his many years playing and producing for his uncle, the great Sonny Rollins, Anderson brings his stellar quintet to Socrates for a night of swinging originals, high energy straight-ahead, calypso, funk, and American songbook standards.
D ubbed “the mayor of Brooklyn” by trumpeter Keyon Harrold, saxophonist Eric Wyatt’s commanding tone carries the mantle of his father, fellow tenor-man Charles Wyatt, and his godfather Sonny Rollins. His latest CD, Look to the Sky, has been praised in Downbeat and JazzTimes, which called the recording, a tribute to his late parents, “intimate and captivating.”

J oey Morant’s August ode to Louis Armstrong has fast become a tradition at Jazz at Socrates, returning now for its third edition. Morant has performed with jazz, soul, and rock ‘n’ roll greats and leads his own bands through rollicking blends of dixieland, soul, jazz, and R&B . He electrifies audiences with his dazzling horn technique, skillful scat singing, and humorous asides.
The Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Series Friday, June 29 • 7 – 8:30 PM Enjoy an evening of sunset opera on the waterfront! The Met’s Summer Recital Series returns to Socrates for its eighth season, featuring soprano Gabriella Reyes de Ramírez, tenor Gerard Schneider, and baritone Adrian Timpau, joined by pianist Dan Saunders. Produced annually in association with SummerStage and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. 19
Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York’s Guelaguetza Festival Sunday, July 29 • 2 – 5 PM Come and immerse yourself in one of the most vivid expressions of Mexican culture: the 6th annual Guelaguetza Festival New York City comes to Socrates Sculpture Park for a cultural celebration of joy and pride through music, dance, and crafts from the eight regions of the state of Oaxaca. The festival is the most celebrated event in Mexico, brought to New York by Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York (BFMNY) since 2013. BFMNY is a non-profit organization founded in 1983, celebrating 35 years of proudly promoting Mexican culture and tradition.
INSITU Site-Specific Dance Festival Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5 • 1 – 8 PM INSITU is a unique, two-day site-specific dance festival presented at Socrates and three other Long Island City public waterfront parks. This year, INSITU presents original dance works by 20 national and international choreographers created in response to specific sites within the parks, setting up a chain of dynamic dance performances that lead audiences up and down the Western Queens waterfront from Socrates to Hunters Point South. This year’s Socrates INSITU performers are: Sophie Maguire & Emma Wiseman, Javier Padilla & The Movement Playground, Babacar Top / TopdanceCompany, Ladies of Hip-Hop Festival, and Fleuve | Espace danse. Hip to Hip Theatre Company presents Free Shakespeare in the Parks Hip to Hip’s 12th season of Free Shakespeare in the Parks pairs an epic tragedy King Lear with a sparkling comedy All’s Well That Ends Well. From family betrayals to fairytale endings, from magical storms to miraculous potions, Shakespeare explores madness, seduction, violence, and the courage it takes to be an outsider.

When the Count arrogantly refuses to marry beneath his class and flees from both king and bride to the nearest war, Shakespeare’s courageous heroine stops at nothing to bring him home.

ing Lear has ruled for many years. As age overtakes him, he divides his K kingdom amongst his children. Misjudging their loyalty, he soon finds himself stripped of all the trappings of state, wealth and power that had defined him. Shakespeare’s great tragedy explores the notion of power — who has it, how one obtains it, and how one defines it. * Kids & The Classics is the companion piece to Hip to Hip’s program of Free Shakespeare in the Parks. This free interactive workshop is offered 30 minutes before every performance, and is designed for children ages 4 to 12. It gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters and situations, and creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games and close reading of text.
Dance at Socrates Performances: Saturdays, August 11, 18, 25 • 4 – 5:30 PM Presented in partnership with Norte Maar Norte Maar’s Dance at Socrates returns for its 6th season bringing dancemakers and their companies to a main stage set on the East River waterfront. Internationally recognized for its large-scale sculpture and multi-media installations, Socrates partners with Norte Maar, renowned for their cross-disciplinary collaborative projects, to present this choreographic residency in the Park dedicated to the creation and presentation of dance. “Because dance is, in many ways human sculpture in motion, it’s very much at home in Socrates Sculpture Park.” - The New York Times. Circus Amok Saturday, September 1 • 3 – 4 PM Come one, come all! Circus Amok returns to Socrates with its funny, political, one-ring circus spectacular: Jugglers, stilt dancers, acrobats, puppets and paper mache lions fill the ring in a performance designed to help us navigate these treacherous times. Prepare to be dazzled, alarmed, enchanted, enraged! Laugh, cry, celebrate!

Outdoor Cinema 2018: 20th Anniversary! There are more languages spoken in Queens than any other place on Earth, and as such, Socrates’ Outdoor Cinema is distinct for its emphasis on exclusively presenting foreign films, in addition to screenings paired with a pre-movie cultural music / dance performance and cuisine from the film’s country of origin. Outdoor Cinema is curated in partnership and collaboration with two experts in world cinema: Film Forum brings their breadth and depth of film history, focusing on both classic and current critically acclaimed films, while Rooftop Films offers brand new movies to the series, often in their NY or U.S. premieres, with introductions by the film’s directors.

Yoga May 19 – September 16 Saturdays, 9:30 – 10:30 AM & 11 AM – 12 PM; Sundays, 10 – 11 AM Socrates offers Vinyasa Yoga presented by 3 unique practitioners with varying styles and backgrounds: 9:30am Saturday classes are taught by Jennifer Batson, 11am classes by Morgan Miller; Sunday classes are led by Yojaida Estrella. In all classes, participants flow through a series of connected yoga poses with an awareness of the breath in this welcoming waterfront environment of nature and art.

Kayaking and Canoeing Socrates Sculpture Park Beach at Hallets Cove In partnership with Long Island City Community Boathouse LIC Community Boathouse offers free kayaking and canoeing in Hallets Cove (weather permitting). People of all ages are welcome to participate or volunteer. No prior boating experience is required and participants may sign up on a first come, first serve basis. Minors (under 18 yrs.) must have a parent or guardian present. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome to accompany their owners! LICCB provides all necessary equipment such as life jackets for both your two- and four-legged family members. 27

The NYC Compost Project hosted by Big Reuse In conjunction with Socrates’ longtime partnership with Big Reuse, the NYC Compost Project provides a food scrap drop-off opportunity everyday during open Park hours. The NYC Compost Project hosted by Big Reuse is part of a community-scale composting network that works to rebuild our soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally.

May 19: Seed Starting Indoors with Anna Poaster Starting seeds indoors is an incredibly exciting and rewarding process:
you can pick the exact exotic, funky, or heirloom variety that you’ve been ogling in the seed catalogs and it can result in healthier and hardier plants than the starts you might buy at your local garden store. However, many gardeners are scared away, thinking they need green houses or grow lights or the ultimate green thumb to successfully seed start. We say that’s hogwash! Come learn about the ins and outs of the seed starting process, start some seeds to take home, and take your garden knowledge to the next level. Four 30 minute demos at 12, 1, 2, 3 PM.
June 2: Urban Gardening Techniques in English and Español As part of Socrates’ Queens Green Day, farmers Rob McGrath and Cristhian Monedero will facilitate interactive presentations of urban gardening techniques in English and Español including demonstrations and examples of sub-irrigated planters, solar dehydrated herbs, and more.

S eeds grow into the foods that sustain our lives, but what does a seed need to germinate and thrive? Join us to explore a variety of seeds, learn what they need to grow, and make a living seed necklace to observe germination!
August 18: Vermicomposting with Jennifer Plewka Vermicomposting is Mother Nature’s ultimate recycling system. Red Wiggler worms process large quantities of food waste indoors, turning it into an extremely rich form of compost to feed back to the Earth, or your houseplants. Join us for a hands-on Wormshop at the Park!
Hellgate Farm is a network of residential and rooftop gardens in Queens. They staff a market table at the Park every Saturday, May through mid-November, 11 AM – 4 PM, offering fresh cut produce (the majority being harvested that same morning from their micro-local gardens), as well as small batch products such as signature hot sauces, ketchups, and dried herbs. Throughout the season, other special vendors will be featured on Saturdays including The Connected Chef, who will present “Connecting Through Food” on the second Saturday of every month: May 12, June 9, July 14, and August 11, 12 – 3 PM. During these cold prep food demos, parents will learn to cook with their kids and adults will learn some delicious, easy meals that are great for summertime.

May 19: Inflating Colors with Tamar Ettun
Kick off the 2018 Saturday Sculpture Workshop season by crafting colorful inflatables with plastic sheets and tape. Participants will start by sketching out their ideas, creating patterns, and then cutting and taping the pieces together. We will inflate the balloons in the open space of the education area and then create an interactive movement piece!
May 26: Sculpting Holograms with the HoloCenter
Celebrate the International Day of Light by creating a sculpture and then capturing it as a hologram in 3D with laser light! Join Dr. Martina Mrongovius from the Center for the Holographic Arts – HoloCenter to explore light, shadow, and form in this unique workshop.

Join a variety of Socrates artists and local partners for fun activities and art-making opportunities as part of the new Queens Green Day, a celebration of local ecological initiatives, food justice, urban farming, gardening, healthy living including bike safety, and all things “green.”
June 9: Sculpture in Motion with The Little Animation Studio
If a sculpture could come to life, what would it do? Participants will use the art of stop-motion animation to explore the possibilities of moving sculptures. Come create your own small sculpture and bring it to life! Teaching artists from The Little Animation Studio will guide you through animation basics using professional grade animation software and equipment.
June 16: Means of Production / Methods of Repair with Pam Reyes
Come learn the ancient art of weaving in this creative and practical workshop! Use this new skill to create a beautiful wall-hanging or 31
apply it as a method for repairing clothes, such as worn out socks and ripped flannels. We invite you to bring clothes that are in need of minor repair and we’ll show you how weaving can breathe new life into your old favorites!
June 23: Oaxaca Marionettes with Megan Basaldua
Travel with us to Oaxaca, Mexico for the day to create alebrije marionettes from recycled materials! Alebrijes are colorfully patterned, never-before-seen creatures that appeared in artists’ dreams and were later carved in wood for remembrance. This is a chance for participants to bring to life their own creations, whether it is an imaginary friend, a creature from a dream, or a new combination of animals you’ve always wanted to see!
June 30: Neighborhood Heroes with Karen Adelman
Who are the helpers in your neighborhood? What are their super powers? Do they have any secret identities? In this workshop, we’ll create capes or masks that celebrate the heroes right here in our own neighborhoods — parents, teachers, nurses, crossing guards, sanitation workers, and more. Each participant will create a colorful logo with letters or symbols that represent someone important in their daily life, attaching the pieces onto a fabric cape they can actually wear. Participants may also be able to hide their secret identity by creating a matching felt mask.
July 7: Think Outside the Body with Dave Marini
Become a work of art and change the shape of your body — transform your human form into a sculpture! Participants will create 3-dimensional interactive artworks using their bodies and sustainable materials. Think about your body as the foundation of a sculpture and then exaggerate parts of yourself by extending, contracting, and deforming your body in new, fun, and fascinating ways.
July 14: Kite Making 101 with Juan Hinojosa
In 2018 we are surrounded by computer games, smartphones, and apps, so why not take a moment to go old school? Learn how to build and fly your own kite made out of recycled materials sourced locally in Queens! Participants are invited to add positive messages to their kites, sharing them with the world as they fly through the sky.
July 21: Body in Between - Body Casting with Liene Bosquê
Participants will investigate the process of creating a threedimensional copy of a living human body. Participants will use

their own or a parent / friend’s body parts as a model to make casts with plaster bandage. This method of life-casting allows creation of exact portraits and body reproduction, through the use of mold-making techniques.
July 28: Geological Pets with Aiysha Mayfield
Join us as we explore the Park’s geological topography and transform rock samples into awesome Pet Rocks. Did you know that NYC and parts of the East River waterfront are giant rock deposits from a glacier? Did you know you can tell the difference between rocks by identifying what types of minerals they contain? You’ll learn more cool facts like these while gaining a new appreciation for the unique land formation of Socrates. Best of all, you get to design and take home your very own Geological Pet!
August 4: Enveloping the Invaluable with Joy Scanlon
What is precious to you? How do you protect it? What form could you build to do that? In this workshop, participants will reflect on what they consider to be precious, and what kind of structures would serve to protect it. Using fabric strips, paper mache, popsicle sticks, wire, and string, participants will combine symbols, words, and sculptural elements to build a nest-like assemblage for their treasure.
August 11: Plastic Bag Couture with John Hatfield
Couture magic happens with everyday plastic bags by turning them into a large fashionable tote bag of your own brilliant design. This simple cut and fuse process using an iron turns throwaways into a colorful, customized tote bag.
August 18: Print Making with The Crafty Lumberjacks
Learn three different unconventional stamping techniques with HGTV’s Astoria residents, The Crafty Lumberjacks. Create your own stamps, modern prints and get creative with color and texture!
August 25: Wish Pots with Penelope Katsaras
Using the techniques of pinch, coil, and simple press molds, we will build decorative pots to hold our wishes. The technique is ancient and universal, used worldwide to create vessels without a potter’s wheel. Methods will include pinch pots or small fragments inlayed into a pre-existing bowl form, optionally built higher with coils — and with your wishes carved inside!
September 1: Weaving Through Dreams with Karina Robledo
Socrates’ beautiful waterfront landscape is the perfect setting for a 33
dreamy weaving and journaling session. Participants are invited to explore their creativity through crafting personalized dreamcatchers as well as special booklets to capture thoughts and reflections.
September 8: Workshop on the Street with Amy Khosbin
A wearable banner-making workshop with the artist who activated Socrates’ Broadway Billboard with her work Word on the Street: Love Not Hatred. Participants are invited to respond honestly and creatively to the political climate of today by making capes, sashes, badges, signs, and banners out of colorful felt. Participants are encouraged to wear their gear to simply celebrate their freedom of speech or to their next protest. The point of the workshop is to spark face-to-face political dialogue, connection, and physical creative response. Everyone is welcome in this safe space for participation and engagement.
September 15: Clay Sculptures with The Noguchi Museum
Isamu Noguchi once wrote about working with clay as “my close embrace with the earth, a seeking after identity with some primal matter beyond personalities and possessions.” Join Noguchi Museum educator Harumi Ori for a clay workshop and consider the possibilities and limitations of sculpting with clay. Find natural materials at Socrates and embrace the earth while creating an entirely organic sculpture.
Sculpture Camp Weekdays, July 10 – August 17 10 AM – 12 PM & 1 – 3 PM Registration Required* Presented in partnership with ConEdison Sculpture Camp is a six-week series of summer art-making workshops designed for youth ages 5-12 from local day camps, summer schools, and community groups. Experience the Park and create fun, unique art projects with a different artist each week. *Note: Pre-registration is required via socratessculpturepark.org/ sculpturecamp or by calling 718.956.1819 x104. Groups are welcome to sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis for a single workshop or a combination of weekly workshops. Workshops are free, with a $150 cancellation penalty.
July 9 – 13: Secret Creatures with Doug Paulson
A world of undiscovered creatures will emerge in the Park! Using a variety of conventional and unconventional materials, we’ll make Socrates 2018
a herd of (friendly) parasites that we’ll magnetically attach to the artworks in the current exhibition for a fun photo-op. Afterwards, these sculptures can become climbing creatures on the refrigerator at home.
July 16 – 20: Piñata Making with Zaq Landsberg
The history of piñatas is rooted in a Mexican folk art tradition that has now been integrated into U.S. pop culture. Participants will be assisted in creating the piñata form of their choosing, in which they will learn about assembling 3D shapes, connecting them in a way that is sturdy, and transforming framework with color and texture. They can fill their piñatas and break them afterward (at home!), or keep them as an art object.
July 23 –27: Living Planters with Daniela Gomez
What is your relationship with nature? How can we build a bridge between nature and art? Participants will create mixed media sculptural works that will function as living spaces for their own mint plants to live in using broken or donated found objects, in addition to modeling clay, yarn, and embellishments.
July 30 – August 3: Socrates Speeeedway with Doug Paulson
Join our pinewood derby hack! First we’ll build sculptures by combining a variety of fun and unexpected materials. Once finished, we’ll put them on top of pinewood derby race cars and send them zooming down a racetrack inspired by the current exhibition.
August 6 – 10: Summertime Jam with Devin Garcia
It’s time to get loud and express yourself through music! Participants will create wild and whimsical musical instruments from everyday objects using innovative techniques. What kinds of different sounds can we make, and what happens when we join them together? Workshop includes an improvised concert right inside our education area!
August 13 – 17: Embodying Empowerment with Pam Reyes
Many cultures have traditional costumes that designate a person’s identity and importance, whether they belong to a certain tribe, family, or religion. During this workshop, participants will reflect on their own everyday attire, and then imagine how they might adorn themselves to create a sense of empowerment. Using various materials such as cardboard, string, feathers, beads, fabric, and more, create a wearable artwork that makes a statement about you.

Sculpture Studio
Spring and Fall Sessions — special during-school program for local teens
Presented with support from The Pierre andTana Matisse Foundation Sculpture Studio cultivates direct partnerships with local Astoria/ Long Island City middle and high schools to offer an immersive in-school and at-the-Park art-making experience. Current partners are Long Island City High School, Baccalaureate School for Global Education, IS 126 middle school, and VOICE Charter School. Program is facilitated by Lead Educator Doug Paulson, with Assistant Educator Pam Reyes.
Coastal Classroom July 9 – August 9 • 10 AM – 4 PM In partnership with City Parks Foundation City Parks Foundation hosts their Coastal Classroom program for rising 5th-9th grade students at the Socrates Sculpture Park Beach at Hallets Cove. Schools and community-based organizations are invited to schedule four in-depth sessions on marine ecology, waterfront recreational activities, and the importance of preserving the waters surrounding our city. STEM-based, handson activities, coupled with recreational opportunities such as rowing and fishing, allow students to experience our waterways as their own backyard and to learn how to protect them. These outdoor field experiences fully engage students in summer fun and learning and help to raise awareness about one of NYC’s most important assets: our waterfront. Community Works Initiative Program In partnership with Urban Upbound Socrates has partnered with local service organization Urban Upbound since 2013 to assist with recruitment for the Park’s

longstanding Community Works Initiative Program, employing residents from our neighboring public housing complexes for seasonal positions at the Park. Urban Upbound’s mission is to provide residents of the four public housing neighborhoods in Western Queens with the tools and resources needed to achieve economic mobility and self-sufficiency. Youth Employment, Internships & Volunteering Socrates is a place of opportunity for local youth looking to gain firsthand exposure to working in arts education, event management, and exhibitions at a non-profit organization. We proudly partner with local schools like Baccalaureate School for Global Education and Bryant High School, Studio in a School for high school and college level internships, and with the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) of HANAC Youth Services.
