Sod3 Group Newscast : Blackberry System Failure
What’s up with bbm?
Is Blackberry (RIM) loosing it? Just after recovering from an outage that lasted most of Monday, the Blackberry Data Network is offline again for many users in Europe, africa, the middle east and south america.Blackberry has issued a statement earlier today explaining what is happening to over 70 million users worldwide(only North America and Australia are unaffected).A Research in Motion Spokesperson said in the statement: The Messaging and browsing delays being experienced by Blackberry users in Europe, the Middle East,Africa,India,Brazil,Chile and Argentina were cause by a core switch failure within RIM’s Infrastructure.Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested. As a result,a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and we will continue to keep you informed
The Canadian RIM(Research In Motion),manufacturer of the record breaking Blackberry, selling at over 10 million units worldwide in the 1st quarter of this year, seemed to have failed many of its supporters though. The inability to be provide a cohesive explanation 2 days in a row has angered many customers. They have built the reputation of their mobile devices on the routing email and other messages selling the connectivity, security, speed and efficiency of their phones, but their widely used BIS(Blackberry Internet Service) on which the entire phone’s communication is based(email, messenger, internet) has been unavailable for 3 days now worldwide. On twitter yesterday:”Some users in EMEA are experiencing issues. We’re investigating, and we apologize for any inconvenience”.In South Africa,no network provider was able to answer our questions yesterday on this. And only this morning(Day 3) did some of us receive an sms notifying of their awareness of the issue;Vodacom: “Dear Customer,RIM(Blackberry) have informed us that a ‘core switch failure’ has been fixed[..]service delays are still likely”. For Blackberry, after a quite bad quarter due to unsatisfying sales of their Playbook tablet,it seems all hell is breaking loose. They will loose a lot of customers to this. http://www.sod3.info

Sod3 Group Newscast : Blackberry System Failure
Well my blackberry is useless now,i guess yours too? It’s so annoying,i bought it just for bbm,and now it doesn’t work.Certain colleagues though, those on BES(Blackberry Enterprise Server) communicate with no problem between each other.I knew i should have bought an iPhone. lol .but really it is quite the shake in the industry of ICT.We never expect failures of this weight, especially not with the reaction witnessed here.A Blackout, because that’s what this is,a partial, but true communicational blackout serves just right the purpose of showing “IT can fail”. It also raises the question,a few days back we wrote an article on cloud computing and innovative network technologies, and the same RIM going through trouble now has been criticize for their choice of a proprietary technology many times.Although a very few other phones access the Blackberry Services(some HTCs and Sony Ericssons) the choice of exclusive access trough their BI/BE Services shows very unsafe. Most Blackberries cannot access the internet or communicate when the BIS unavailable, that loading most of the phone’s usability for 70 million users worldwide,on one Server system. Why?
A Little more on Blackberry
Blackberry Service comes in two variations: BIS(the consumer-oriented Blackberry Internet Service) and BES(the business focused Blackberry Enterprise Software).A Blackberry handset linked to BES is associated to a dedicated enterprise server while the BIS users(general consumers, also called EMEA users) are all linked to a gigantic, monolithic RIM BES (the one posing problems here).
