horned-scurred-polled
1 These bulls have been eliminated from the program. They are not easily handled. 2 Harder to handle with a wide flight zone. These bulls will get worked up very easily when alone or under pressure. 3 Most of the bulls fit into this score. 3’s are very easy to handle but will move off pressure with ease. 4 These bulls are extremely quite and will take a lot of pressure.
calving ease Calving ease is one of the biggest concerns to most bull buyers and most often related to the birth weight of a bull. However, there are many other factors that are influences like nutrition and gestation. Our ratings are based on all of the information we have available.
***
Should produce minimal calving problems when bred to moderate sized, first calf heifers.

BreeDING SeASON warranty program
Soderglen’s Warranty Program offers a cut rate warranty in a language you can understand. Soderglen will warranty your bull and carry all risk. In our opinion, using only Mortality Insurance is money out the window with little or no value because 96% of bull problems are injury, not death. We have the ability to make cash settlement or service your needs with another bull, whichever you choose. Should you have any problem with a bull, contact Soderglen at (403) 948-6734 and we will handle the problem immediately. Your veterinarian and yourself will fill out a claim form provided by Soderglen and that is all that is needed to take care of your claim. It’s unfortunate but sometimes bulls will become injured prior to or during their first breeding season and often these injuries are life threatening. In an effort to better serve our customers we are offering an optional warranty on all bulls sold through this sale. This warranty will cover loss of use from injuries as well as death.
warranty responsibility ◊ Notify Soderglen immediately by phone, fax or email. ◊ Employ a licensed veterinarian to treat, diagnose and fill out claim form. ◊ If the animal dies, a postmortem may be required. ◊ When necessary, deliver the bull back to Soderglen. exclusions to policy Injury or death due to malicious, willful or intentional acts or mistreatment by you or your employees are fraudulent claims.

crossbreeding Systems Must be designed to fit the operation; herd size, number of pastures, existing cow herd genes and other managerial constraints will determine the most appropriate crossbreeding system.
Rotational Systems
rotational crossbreeding tip: use breeds that are similar in birthweight, mature size and milk production to allow large swings in biological type and input costs. angus and max are especially well suited for rotational systems due to their balance of cowherd building traits with end product traits.
The goal of a rotational crossbreeding system is twofold: ◊ Generate females which combine the complementary cow herd traits of parent breeds while building acceptable levels of maternal heterosis into the cow herd. ◊ Build “reputation” feeder cattle that excel in the feed and carcass traits that will keep buyers bidding aggressively.

heterosis Individual vs. Maternal Heterosis Individual heterosis is the increased performance a crossbreed exhibits relative to it’s straightbred parent for traits such as growth to weaning, or yearling weight. Maternal Heterosis is expressed in the crossbreed female’s progeny, such as increased weaning weight of the crossbred females’ calves due to the increased milk production of their crossbred dams. Heterosis has been shown to increase lifetime production 20-50% 0

in crossbred cows. This increase results from cumulative benefits of heterosis across numerous cow herd traits to include: fertility, longevity, weaning rate, etc. The table below compares the increase in weight of calf weaned per cow exposed that may be expected with individual heterosis vs. both individual maternal heterosis. 5

modifed red & black simmental genetics
Simmental cattle have been and will continue to be one of the largest and most popular crossbreeding selections at Soderglen and throughout North America. This is not a fluke. At Soderglen we breed Simmental cattle because of their ability to infuse exceptional traits into our cowherds. Soderglen Simmental cattle have been genetically selected for easier calving, high growth, and high yielding carcasses. They have been environmentally selected for
moderate frame size, nice udders, desirable hair coat, and a structural soundness backed by the best guarantee in the business. Soderglen Simmental cattle are a perfect fit for a terminal cross, or a rotational crossbreeding system where the hybrid vigour of our Simmental cattle can be captured in the replacement females. Use and trust the Simmental cattle raised at Soderglen on your Angus based commercial cowherds.

angus modifed red & black simmental genetics
Ranch Tested, Rancher Trusted. The Angus program at Soderglen has been an integral one and one that has provided the benchmark for Soderglen’s Max and Simmental programs. In North America’s cow industry today producers are faced with two of the most opportunistic decisions: 1. Breed cows and select a cowherd for absolute performance and production based on weaning weights and performance. 2. Select your cowherd with a focus on reproduction, fertility and stayability of females. This may sound oversimplified but it is a decision a lot of producers are trying to make when selecting and purchasing bulls. At Soderglen we have always believed that the proper approach to breeding cattle is
16
the balanced approach. We aim to balance performance and production with reproductive and stayability traits providing a profitable cowherd for the longterm. As we enter a period where red meat yield is demanded pushing the focus to high growth continental cattle, it is important to maintain sustainability in your cowherd and the Angus based female provides this balance. It does take more than just milk to make a great beef cow, cows must provide years of trouble free reproduction. At Soderglen we believe this means cows that make the most of their given resources, while consistently producing offspring that hit market targets. Trust the Soderglen Angus program to give you the right tools to bring all of these components together so you can build a profitable, sustainable cowherd.

simmental modifed red & black simmental genetics
Simmental cattle have been and will continue to be one of the largest and most popular crossbreeding selections at Soderglen and throughout North America. This is not a fluke. At Soderglen we breed Simmental cattle because of their ability to infuse exceptional traits into our cowherds. Soderglen Simmental cattle have been genetically selected for easier calving, high growth, and high yielding carcasses. They have been environmentally selected for moderate frame size, nice udders, desirable hair coat, and a structural soundness backed by the best guarantee in the business.

The Angus program at Soderglen has been an integral one and one that has provided the benchmark for Soderglen’s Max and Simmental programs. In North America’s cow industry today producers are faced with two of the most opportunistic decisions: 1. Breed cows and select a cowherd for absolute performance and production based on weaning weights and performance. 2. Select your cowherd with a focus on reproduction, fertility and stayability of females. This may sound oversimplified but it is a decision a lot of producers are trying to make when selecting and purchasing bulls. At Soderglen we have always believed that the proper approach to breeding cattle is the balanced
approach.

How well do Express Verified calves do when they get to the feedlot? Do Express Verified calves do better than average calves once they get to feedlots? Do you completely lose any potential benefit if you can’t get enough Express Verified (EV) calves to fill or nearly fill a pen? These are two excellent and common questions we get asked. Thanks to an analysis of Canadian feedlot data by Feedlot Health Management Services (FHMS), there are now some answers to those questions. FHMS used their data base of health information linked to calf RFID tag to investigate what happened to Express Verified calves once they got into feedlots. They compared Express Verified calves to a group of calves that were similar in several ways including risk category, arrival weight, sex and season of entry. The outcomes were morbidity (first pull rate) and mortality on an individual calf and on a pen basis. Individual animal morbidity and mortality: The study looked for differences in morbidity and in mortality between EV calves and non-EV calves in that same pen and non-EV calves in different pens that had no EV calves at all. Within each of these groups, they further sub-divided according to the risk categories that were assigned to calves when pens were filled. Ninety percent of the pens with EV calves contained fewer than 4% EV calves.

a letter from the
NUtrItION SerVIce ASSOcIAteS With the recent volatility we have seen in the fed & feeder cattle markets this last fall it may leave the producer questioning what their calf crop will be worth in the upcoming years. Regardless of what the average value of a feeder calf will be in the upcoming years one clear fact remains. Feedyard owners will always pay more for good quality cattle. Therefore, producers should always strive to improve the quality and consistency of their cow herd & their resulting offspring. The easiest way to do this is by purchasing high quality bulls that breed true to form. The sire & maternal grandsire contribute to ~3/4 of a calf’s genetics. Therefore, purchasing bulls that add more pounds to feeder calves & improve the quality of replacement heifers will give the progressive breeder a competitive edge when selling their calves for more money. Therefore, calves from bulls that have been professionally developed to provide optimum growth, performance, & quality should almost always generate higher returns than the industry average. The basis for breeding high quality beef bulls centers around reproductive soundness and longevity. Reproductive soundness is highly correlated to the nutritional regime used in bull development programs. Feeding rations that are too high or too low in energy may both equally impair semen quality, albeit for different reasons. Bulls fed to obtain maximum average daily gain while on test usually result in a high degree of body condition. Bulls fed in this manner are susceptible to producing lower quality semen and may also have reduced libido & serving capacity. Alternatively,
under-nourished bulls may lack the sexual maturity required at the inception of breeding season, as well as result in large reductions in body condition which could also impair serving capacity. Matching bulls with a moderate energy ration with an optimum ratio of concentrate to forage will allow for development of structural soundness, sexual maturity, and the appropriate body condition for breeding season. Meeting the nutritional needs to allow for proper overall bull growth and reproductive development is a complex process and is an integral part of making your future breeding bull selections. A crucial facet of bull development is providing the appropriate minerals and vitamins. A few of the most important trace minerals are zinc, copper, and manganese, along with vitamins A, D, & E which are key factors in overall animal growth, semen production, fertility, & hoof integrity. The appropriate concentrations of these minerals and in the correct ratios are thought to be as important as other nutrients for proper development, with a large proportion coming from chelated minerals. Soderglen markets only those bulls that meet strict criteria for growth, health, & reproductive efficiency. Thus, when passed on to their offspring, these genetics will not only contribute to the enhancement of a cow herd’s overall efficiency, but should put more change in the producers’ pocket book as well. Sincerely, Aaron Grant Ph.D. & Scott Schake Ph.D.
