THE MILK AND FRESH APPLES MYSTERY
Since the revolution of the animals started, the pigs were the leaders and

decisions. They promised an equal society, but with time, they started behaving like humans and abusing their power. It was evident that there was going to be a division between them, but as time passed the breach became bigger. The change started with small things. In chapter 2 on page 8, Snowball told the animals that they were going to work for the harvest. Notwithstanding, the cows hadn’t been milked for 24 hours, so the pigs milked the cows. They got about five buckets of milk which most of the animals wanted. When someone asked what was going to happen
with
all
that
milk,
Napoleon responded that it would be solved later, but they needed to work in the harvest. Surprisingly, when they came back the milk buckets had disappeared. Then, in chapter 3 on page 11, the mystery was solved. The milk had been mixed into the pig’s mash. The apples ripened and were ready to be consumed. The animals were convinced they would share all of that equally. Nevertheless, the pigs demanded to collect them and brought for their use. The animals were certainly confused. That is why Squealer made their declaration; he said that they would never do that for their own privilege but they needed to consume the milk and the apples since they contained substances they needed for their well-being. Usually, they used speeches to manipulate the situations and convince the animals, and this wasn’t the exception. He added that they were the leaders and had all the management of the farm in their hands. He claimed that if they failed in their duty, Jones was going to come back. The animals immediately retracted themselves and believed in the pigs. They limited themselves to listen to the pigs and left behind their needs and desires. They led the pigs to take control. Their innocence made them think that the pigs were completely honest, and they ended being harmed.
5
A LOYAL WORKER All the animals tried to work hard in order to make the farm progress. In chapter 3, it is shown that Boxer was a hard and tireless worker. He made a great effort trying to work as much as he could to have remarkable progress on the farm. He always said: “ I will work harder”: He was very compromised and devoted to making the farm a better place. He put all his strength into his duties and even worked extra hours. Though, he was very naive and ignorant. First, he depended on the leaders and did whatever they told him; he didn’t have the ability to say no or disobey the orders he received from Napoleon even though he knew he wasn’t correct. He always repeated the phrase “Napoleon is always right”; that is why he never judged a decision Napoleon took. He gave all of him, but when he was no longer useful he was killed. He was having an excellent performance; he was the most laborious and dedicated animal when they were constructing the windmill as is shown in chapter 6; he was one of the best soldiers during the Battle of the Cowshed and proved his loyalty to the farm. Despite all of his effort and demonstrations of strength and value, he was deceived by Napoleon.

Though, the pigs weren’t only clever but had the power to manipulate and convince their audience with their words. They had the gift of the gab. They had the great ability to manipulate events to their favor. This strategy reflects the way in which most of the dictators got the power; they took advantage of the weakness and the poor working class that needed a speech of hope. When they got power they did whatever they could to remain on it and convince people they were the best. This could be seen during the Russian Revolution, the Mexican Revolution, and in general all the countries. This is a way to catch the audience’s attention; it

IMPOSING POWER
In the first instance, Napoleon changed the leading system of the farm into a totalitarian one. Once he gets into power, he changes the system the animals had in the farm; he starts imposing his ideas, without taking into account everyone else’s. Likewise, according to Louise (2018), Stalin used methods such as propaganda, fear and media censorship, among others, to impose people's totalitarian ideologies. This to

GET OUT OF MY WAY!
In a similar matter, Napoleon decides to kill or get rid of everyone who is against his ideals. The perfect example of this is shown in the novel when Napoleon

Napoleon
trained these dogs he called “Secret police” since they were puppies, so when they grew up as big wild dogs they could defend him. Just as Napoleon, Stalin also got rid of all those opposed to his ideologies. As History.com editors (2019) state: “Once in power, he collectivized farming
and
had
potential
enemies executed or sent to forced labor camps.” Also, the Library of Congress editors (2016) claim that “Stalin had eliminated all likely potential opposition to his leadership by late 1934 and was the unchallenged leader of both

and
state.”
This
evidence proves the idea that Stalin
and
Napoleon
both
wanted to do whatever they wanted
without
anyone
opposing their ideas.
13
SOCIAL PRIVILEGES
By the same token, food rations were not fair in the farm. This can be stated since Napoleon took most of it for him and for his secret police, he discriminated against the rest of the animals in the farm. Napoleon wasn’t an equal leader, he first thought of the well being of him and his dogs while the rest of the animals were suffering from hunger. Napoleon's actions support the ideal of a dictatorship that as stated by Fan (2017), “Wealth is not fairly divided amongst the citizens; instead, the highest class in society is paid with most of the state's wealth”. In the case of the book what was not fairly divided was the food instead of the wealth. This means that Napoleon was a dictator in Animal Farm as the one Stalin was in real life during the Russian Revolution.
14
PRECISE EVENTS Comparable, Napoleon kills the hens when they don’t want to give him any more eggs. When the hens stop giving their eggs, Napoleon orders the animals not to give food to the hens or if they do, they will die. After some days, the hens had already passed out. This is similar
to
the
situation
narrated by a History editor (2019) where he states that Joseph Stalin in the past killed
the
farmers
that
didn’t want to give up their farms. This exposes that in the book animal farm there were close representations of most of Stalin’s actions.
15
MANIPULATING POWER Napoleon
manipulates
the
seven
commandments into a single one saying: “all animals are created equal, but some animals are more equal.” This phrase refers to Joseph Stalin’s mindset which was that he was superior to the rest of the population.
The same way happened in the novel Animal farm with Napoleon, he imposed his ideologies which he thought were superior to the ones the rest of the pigs had. Boundless (2015) “Stalin believed that economic integration with the West would allow Eastern Bloc countries to escape Soviet control, and that the U.S. was trying to buy a pro-U.S. realignment of Europe. Stalin therefore prevented Eastern Bloc nations from receiving Marshall Plan aid. The Soviet Union’s alternative to the Marshal.” Therefore,

that
Stalin
and
Napoleon both change rules for their convenience.
16
REPRESENTATION OF HISTORY
In summary, the novel “Animal Farm” is an exact representation of the corruption in socialist ideas by Joseph Stalin. In the novel, the dictatorship was led by the pig Napoleon. Some examples of the pig’s actions that were similar to Stalin’s are: the change of system to a totalitarian one, the fact that both of them got rid of any opponents that were against their ideals, giving privilege to the high class of the society, manipulating rules in their respective areas. After all these aspects analized, there are
proved all the similarities
between the leaders and the structure of leadership that took place in the Russian Revolution and in the novel “Animal Farm”.

How to fool everyone just by embezzling information
BY: Francesca Nicolella
18
By: Francesca Nicolella 12 /09 /2020 “It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong.”
-Thomas SowellOne
of the most dominant themes over the book Animal Farm by George Orwell is the abuse of language as an instrumental to the abuse of power. The writer, in this case Orwell, show us readers, not only how after “the great rebellion” everything slowly turned from a democracy to a complete dictatorship, we are also explained how Napoleon manipulated every situation to his own benefit; It isn’t shown once, it isn’t shown twice, it is shown multiple times along the book, every time he felt like it, he arranged everything to make it seem like he was the good guy, the one who uphold the truth when really he was the one making everything in a wrongful way. He took the power and abuse of it so hypocritically, took advantage of the naiveness of the rest of the animals and then started to care less and less of every animal that wasn't or a pig or a dog. Most of the animals were not as educated as the pigs were, most of them couldn’t even go past letter D of the alphabet, which means that they could convince the complete farm that what Napoleon was saying made sense and that there was no possible way to refute it.
19
Although the naiveness of the working class is not the theme of the article it does have a lot to do with what is going to be talked about. To come here and explain how the leaders of the animal farm took language as a tool to manipulate everyone I have to also include how the society was so ignorant to let something like this happen. Citing from the book in case, page 33 says “The pigs could already read and write perfectly… Muriel, the goat, could read somewhat better than the dogs...Benjamin could read as well as any pig, but never exercised his faculty. Clover learnt the whole alphabet but could not put words together. Boxer could not get beyond letter D.
ollie refused to learn any but the six letters which spelt her own
name...
None of the other animals could get further than letter A. It was also found that the stupider animals such as sheep, hens, and ducks were unable to learn the 7 commandments.” Reading this it is able to get to some conclusions. For example, conclusion number one, who were the ones who had more knowledge? The pigs right, now who were the ones who immediately took charge? ...The pigs but they also tell us that Benjamin was as smart as any of the pigs so why couldn’t the donkey lead everyone. Well the answer to that question is the simple-mindedness in which the society lived. As much abuse the pigs could do to the others, they were not the only guilty ones, they all were
given
the
opportunity
to
study
and
educate
themselves but they decided to just not to take the chance and remain credulous to what they were told.
20
After Napoleon throws out Snowball and gains full power of the farm he starts to disengage, loose interest, careless of the others animals, for him they were no longer equal while all of the animals slept in the stalls as it arrange from the very first beginning, Napoleon took as property the farmhouse where he started living accompanied from the pigs and the fierce dogs he carried around. He started disappearing and when Napoleon needed to give and information or more often clear up “misunderstood” in the “lower” class Squealer was the one who was sent. In page 57 we see a big evidence of this; Snowball and Napoleon always were fighting and disagreeing, but one of their biggest disagreements was over the Windmill, Napoleon always refused to it but then suddenly with Snowball gone, he accepted it, which clearly left the animals confused. Squealer then enters and says “Napoleon had never in reality been opposed to the windmill. On the contrary, it was he who had advocated it in the beginning, and the plan which Snowball had drawn on the floor of the incubator shed had actually been stolen from among Napoleon papers.”
21
As the Rebellion first started the animals agreed to set up some ground rules so that they will not have to live once again the days of the manor farm the days were everything was messed up. Despite the fact that few were the animals who weren’t completly “stupid”, they all together made the fisrt rules which they named the seven commandments. 7 rules that empthazised that nothing that should, walk on 2 legs, drink, use clothes and all the things a normal human would do was going to ever be a friend on the contrary an enemy. One of the things they most hated from Jones was that he was always drunk, thereup they created commandment number five “NO ANIMAL SHALL DRINK ALCOHOL” Every single one of this rules was follow to the line but as soon Napoleon tooked the absolute power he began to changed and adapt this rules to his own benefit; In page 109 of the book even says “Muriel, reading over the Seven Commandments to herself, notice that there was yet another of them which the animals had remembered wrong. They thought that the Fifth Commandment was “No animal
shall
drink
alcohol,”
but
there
were
two
words
that
they
had
forgotten.
Actually
the
Commandment read: “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess.”
22
Just as it happened with the alcohol situation it happened with one of the most important rules to asure that peace and harmony prevails “NO ANIMAL SHALL KILL ANY OTHER ANIMAL.” As an addition to Napoleon’s crazy dictatorship ideals he stated that every animal who decided to go against him or even that had betrayed him should die immediately which was the situation where Napoleon slaughter a tons of animals, page 85 of the book affirms “Since Jones had left the farm, until today, no animals had killed another animal. Not even a rat had been killed. They had made their way on to the little knoll where the half-finished stood and for some time nobody spoke.”
Later on, page 91 says “ A
few days later, when the terror caused by the executions had died down, some of the animals remembered -or thought they remembered- that the Sixth Commandment decreed “NO animal shall kill any other animal.” Muriel read the commandment for Clover. It ran: “No animal shall kill any other animal without cause.” Somehow or other, the last two words had slipped out of the animals’ memory.” They did not care to investigate why they didn’t remember the last two words, why it sounded so extrange.
23
When
they
made
the
decision
to
finally
make
the
Rebellion and “free themselves” from the humans, they did it because they couldn't endure the bad treatment of Mr. Jones and his men anymore, so when they finally expelled him they planned never to see him ever again. They had chills everytime someone mentioned his name, thing, that with time the pigs started to use as a tool to scare them, to submit to their will, to trick them into believing that their say was the right one. As Squealer began to advocate for Napoleon it became normal that if the others were in disagreement or disapproval of what he was saying he tended to mention him in a threatening way, like when he was convincing them that Napoleon was a great leader in page 55 “Bravery is not important, Said Squealer, loyalty and obedience are more important. I believe that the time will come when we shall find that Snowball’s part in it was much exaggerated. Discipline, Comrades, iron discipline! One false step and our enemies would be upon us. Surely, Comrades, you do not want Jones back?” Just like when you were little and you had a bad behavior and your mom said something like “If you don’t behave, that old man is going to take you away.” You would instantly conduct yourself, because normally that situation would generate such a fear in you, not knowing if that would really happen but you also don’t dare to try, so you just do as told.
24

26
The animals at the farm didn't have privilege through the book to learn things about life and this only makes it worse because when they are on their own they didn’t know what to do and enter in disaster and crisis all over the farm. This can be compared to when a country leaves a dictatorship in which they couldn’t make decisions, and now they can not know how to do it properly and lead the country to failure. But being in the dictatorship is also wrong cause they can not express what they think, and express their ideas, and that way the only privileged ones are the pigs (the ones in power). In this book they talked about a natural líder, the pigs, but the real question is who far are they willing to go to protect the farm or if they actually care about it. Because in some parts of “Animal farm” I can infer that the leader doesn’t make decisions to benefit everyone they only make decisions so that they benefit and can stay in power. And that at the same time made me believe that if something happened to the farm they would run away and don’t try to fix it, and the other animals can not do anything because they don’t know anything and never anyone tried to teach them things. The failure of intellect in the book is shown as a normal things cause in this farm the education is a privilege, and the only privilege to learn where the ones that were gonna be future politics, but this later on in the book can be a bad thing because the other animals can not have a voice and can’t know what’s right or wrong, the only thing that they have left to do is to believe the ones that have education, who were raised by they ancestors that believe they were superior and deserved more than the rest, that lead future generations to think the same which made them selfish and didn’t lead them to be good leaders that are concerned about them people.

In this book is shown how much an anarchy can destroy a society, and how much people can be easily manipulated by their leaders. It teaches an important lesson that it’s needed to learn in real life that knowledge is power that’s why they were only shown to the future leaders and not to random people in the common so that they couldn’t question the anarchy and their way to manage the farm. Like it must be in real life nowadays not much but in the Middle Ages that can be seen or in the 1800.
In conclusion, the failure of intellect can lead a society to perdición cause normally when this happens is when the dictatorship, that not lead other people rule only the ones they want. And this is bad cause this people normally as super selfish and doesn’t care about the people and only care about their power and the money they can do with it, also are master manipulators taking advantage of people that don’t know a lot of things, telling them lies about what’s best for them and the people.

What was described previously is a clear example of what happens in the book Animal Farm. Animals unite to throw Jones out of power and when they achieve this the pigs get into power and the rest of the animals are just their followers, and rules start to be unfair or unnecessary but none of them can’t protest against the pigs or “brain workers” as they like to call themselves. It is just the social necessity to be classified into classes and this division brings injustice for the lower classes which are the majority of the population, the high classes have just a few members. To start citing real evidence from the book, in the second to the third chapter when the animals get Jones out of the power and the pigs replace him, we can start to see that something is going on. It seems really strange that from the start the pigs are called the brain workers or the superior kind and other names when all they do is give orders to the rest of the animals. The animals do all the physical work, they do all the effort for different chores on the farm, building the windmill, collecting crops, and other things but are the lower class in society even though they word the hardest.
Another thing that denotes pigs’ superiority is how they eventually move to Jones’ house, they eat in the kitchen and sleep in beds. The pigs are just living like humans, they are way more comfortable and in a way transforming into humans, they have a better quality of life and work way less than the other animals. Also, the pigs have 6 dogs that are like their defense, their bodyguards. They are there to protect the pigs. This is just another symbol of their “superiority”, it is not fair for them to take over the farm because they consider themselves the smartest animals.
Something that really stands out is how the commandments are modified to privilege Napoleon and the other pigs, for example, commandment number 4 on page 10 says “No animal shall sleep in a bed”, as you’ve read pigs moved to the house and slept in beds but this was against the rules so one of the pigs’ supporters changed the rule when asked about it and said it was that no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets focusing in the sheets when this was never this way. They just changed it for the pigs to be able to continue living in a more comfortable way. The same happens with commandment number 7 that says: “All animals are equal”. This is false, if all animals are equal, why do pigs live in a house, sleep in beds, and work a lot less than the rest but have a better life? When all the others do is physical and hard work on the farm, these rules actually make no sense.
31
It can be concluded that in the book Animal Farm there is a clear division of social classes among the animals, we can evidence injustice, privileges just for the high class. There is no balance between the pigs’ quality of life and the animals’ conditions, one works harder but is not paid back as it should. Commandments are modified for the benefit of the pigs and many other injustices.

CORRUPTION IN A FARM

CORRUPTION IN A FARM
Sofia Rivera
Corruption is something that has been on since old times, bringing people unfair treatment, creating dishonesty in a country, and more. But What is it? This is an act of dishonesty or criminal offense that is
undertaken by a person, group, or organization like the government, president, or other people, this group usually has the power of authority or just power itself. Corruption is used to acquire illicit or abuse power. “It has many shapes as well as many various effects, both on the economy and the society at large. Among the most common causes of corruption are the political and economic environment, professional ethics and morality and, of course, habits, customs, tradition and demography” ( Šumah.Š, Feb 1, 2018) There are many corruption is used for the “good” of a person. The book Animal Farm by Orwell is a narrative that shows how political, corrupt, and abusive systems work, this book contains plenty of examples that show all of this from the best of view. First, In the book, animal farm corruption is shown often. Showing the readers how corruption is a way of “governing” the farm and the animals. And it's one of the most common things on these farms. Animals are put up
to fight for having little food and following the cruel rules they are put up to. corruption is used by many media such as propaganda and social networks. As little as they may seem they have a big impact on everything. In the 1st chapter page 2 of the animal farm, it states “Let us face it: our lives are miserable, laborious, and short. We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies, and those of us who are capable of it are forced to work to the last atom of our strength, and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty.'' We see here a good representation of how Mr. Jonas, the farmer, and owner of all the animals. He just maintains these animals just for the power and money he will receive in the future, he doesn’t give care to them making the way he works corrupt. Corruption can be shown in many ways as it was stated later, the website transparency International(n.d) states this “Corruption erodes trust, weakens democracy, hampers economic development and further exacerbates inequality, poverty, social division, and the environmental crisis.” and as we see not only in these few sentences but throughout the whole chapter Mr. Jonas treats them badly and uses a corrupt way of working, basically we only work for the economy.
34
Besides, there are plenty of other examples of corruption in this book or this farm, where it takes place. In the book, animal farms it’s seen that the leaders or the corrupt ones of the farm are the pigs, who every time state they are more powerful, intelligent, and better and that’s why they act like that, a good example of corrupt people.. Or animals in this case. What the pigs did they lied to the citizens, animals from the farm, telling them lies. Exhorting, pressuring, them. "You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples (this has been proved by Science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the wellbeing of a pig. We pigs are brain workers. . The whole management and organization of this farm depend on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would come back! Surely, comrades," (Chapter 3, pg. 11). This message is simple but with a powerful meaning behind it shows how the pigs manipulated the citizens and lied to them in their faces saying they wouldn’t survive without them. For some, this doesn’t have a meaning, but it shows the corrupt way in this book the pigs choose to be..
On the other hand, with the corruption and the persuasive things corrupt people do… it gets to the point of promoting it. How? Well as it has been stated before in the article this has many ways to be shown especially throw media or false promises. If you read the beginnings of the book there is this particular person, the major, a pig as well that wanted the animals to be free, he didn’t seem like the kind of person to take advantage of their power, it seemed liked it wanted to just be free and that all the animals swell had a free life. But when he died, they wanted to take his place… normal no one thought anything they just wanted to continue the great thing he did but not everyone has great intentions and twist details so they are in the advantage Just like many of the people or politicians have done.
35
Not only that, it's seen that in this book the pigs, especially one of them called Napoleon, was one of the pigs that took charge of the farm in just a horrible and unfair way. Giving all the best to his kind.. The pigs. While the rest of the animals are just working for them. Saying they need all because then without them there’s nothing, stating they should be the ones who make a change and not the other animals. Twisting people's minds and persuading them to do what they wanted. On pages 36 and 17 of the book, it states this“ Do you not understand what that means? They are taking Boxer to the knacker's!” A cry of horror burst from all the animals. At this moment the man on the box whipped up his horses and the van moved out of the yard at a smart trot. All the animals followed, crying out at the tops of their voices. Clover forced her way to the front.
The van began to gather speed. Clover tried to stir her stout limbs to a gallop and achieved a canter. "Boxer!" she cried. "Boxer! Boxer! Boxer!" And just at this moment, as though he had heard the uproar outside, Boxer's face, with the white stripe down his nose, appeared at the small window at the back of the van. "Boxer!" cried Clover in a terrible voice. "Boxer! Get out! Get out quickly! They're taking you to your death!" This is exposing how the pigs slowly started to get corrupt and created a system were they brainwashed and did actions that didn't help any animal only the pigs, this paragraph from the book can make the readers see how they lost care of the animals how they just wanted power didn’t care what happens to them. Made bonds with other corrupt people, just to get more power.
Finally, on page 19 in the book we see one of the animals shows his slogan that makes him work “harder” “His two slogans, "I will work harder" and "Napoleon is always right,". Then on page 39, we see that state this “No creature among them went upon two legs. No creature called any other creature "Master." All animals were equal”. And at last “No creature among them went upon two legs. No creature called any other creature "Master." All animals were equal.” These little phrases can expose all the corrupt things and systems the pigs had. They made believe the animals(the citizens) their biggest enemy was now their biggest friend. Humans. In Conclusion, corruption is something shown in many ways, and it's expanded by using propaganda like social media where they publish things you want to see but don't make the promises of. Like many countries nowadays that are often known for doing that, saying they would protect the city… protect the country, etc.. but they only make it worse. As has been shown throughout this article animals farm is an example of all these places all this bad leadership in just one book. This book truly shows the things behind politics and how corrupt they start to become throughout time..

Pigs On Power "Now, comrades, what is the nature of this life of ours? Let us face it: our lives are miserable, laborious, and short. We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies, and those of us who are capable of it are forced to work to the last atom of our strength; and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty. No animal in England knows the meaning of happiness or leisure after he is a year old. No animal in England is free. The life of an animal is misery and slavery: that is the plain truth." -Old Mayor
