JEWELLERY VIRTUALIZATION INSTANT PUBLICATION

Aim of Jewellery Virtualization course is to vocalise, discuss and work through many of the issues of jewellery virtualization* in the context of modernity. Secondary aim is a direct work on the reinforcement of the image* which involves examination of the impacts of the virtual reality, social media, photography and video on the essence of jewellery.

* Virtuality definition: 1. First and foremost comes the digital world. “Not physically existing as such but made by software to appear to do so.” (Oxford dictionaries, 2016) 2. “Almost or nearly as described, but not completely or according to strict definition.” (Oxford dictionaries, 2016) 3. In general sense virtuality is a potentiality, something that it is possible Henri Bergson). Virtual as an antipode for real (Gilles Deleuze). * Reinforcement of the image: 1. act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something 2. creation of a desired visualization of existing work Problems caused by virtualization: 1. Impact on the making process 2. Impact on the jewellery perception 3. Impact on the exhibiting process Course outcome: To create an instant publication (both printed and online) representing virtual version of participants favourite works (real objects/jewellery made by participants). Publication aims to answer following questions: 1. Virtual version - imitation or otherness? 2. What are the pros and cons of jewellery virtualization? 3. Why virtuality is essential for effective progress? 4. What strategies are essential for jewellery virtualization? 5. What happens in between when Digital and Physical / Immaterial and Material meet?

Here are a few possible downfalls of technology and virtuality: 1.As technology getting more and more advanced, the more control it gains over our lives. One of my favorite quotes is:” everything in moderation, even moderation itself”, whereas when it comes to the place technology have in our lives, we seem to lose control. We find ourselves spending more time in front of the computer, engaging in our virtual lives, more than we actually spending time in our real lives. Such programs as “second life”, or various online game depict this somewhat addictive tendency to create such a strong virtual identity, or to spend so much in front of the screen, rather than looking with our own very eyes at the real world that surrounds us, that our own true reality is becoming fainted and dull, and as such, we have a growing need to escape from it into virtuality, so we find ourselves trapped in a vicious circle. 2.The abovementioned can easily be recognized as a source for alienation, the illusion we built ourselves, the massive escapism we use more and more to cover for that, all lead to us feeling very lonely, instead of trying to solve it, we are keeping the illusion alive. More and more research and studies show that one of the most significant illnesses of our modern times is depression. There is a very strong correlation between growing feelings of depression, and the fact we are very much alienated from each other, and instead of building strong social bonds and relationship, investing the majority of our efforts, energy and time in virtuality, rather than spending it on making our life better and straighten our social relationships. We find comfort in virtuality, thus not solving our real, acute problems. 3.In nearly every commercial, ad, and promotional we see these days, people encourage others to buy the latest gadget, or upgrade to the latest new thing. “Our culture reminds us every day how useful these devices are, and exhorts us to take advantage of this by making sure we are as digitally connected as current technology allows us to be, The question that needs to be asked is, do we really have to be connected all the time? if you are always in contact, there will be a decreasing amount of time to devote to yourself, and others will shape your opinions more and more. In other words, in many ways, virtuality which has such a strong impact on our lives, and the fact we devote less and less time for ourselves, for building our own identity, all lead up to a decreasing in individuality, in everything which is unique and about ourselves. 4.Another downfall of technology is the fact it has negative effect about us being in the here and now, and fully engaging with our surrounding and the people around us, now that we all have smart devices, we have a growing tendency to check it all the time, to the point of obsession, sometimes not hearing what people say and even missing whole conversations. This makes us very much distanced and alienated from our surrounding, and prevents us from being focused and vital in whatever it is that we are doing. 5.Another negative aspect of virtuality, is the fact that since we store so much information in the digital world, we are putting our own privacy at risk. If you read Google’s privacy policy carefully, it is clear that they retain the right to make significant decisions about our data without regard for our interests. Such is the case with social media such as Facebook, where we managing a thriving social lives, and where our information is exposed, and furthermore, where we are constantly serve as a target for advertisement companies with whom Facebook is collaborating, thus releasing private information about its customers. Quite often we hear about private photos and information which was kept in google cloud and somehow leaked to the public, or important information about bank accounts of private people which is kept over the net, and that is been exploited by hackers and criminals. And as much negative roles or rather not positive ones in our life there is another side of the coin which results in basic quick and concentrated content as well as outcome. Here are few minimal on point pros of virtualization. NOGA RACHEL HAREL 1.The easy way of spread 2.Lower costs 3.Unrestricted access 4. Quick result 5. Possible to control or release from any world corner 6. Accessible for wider public 7. Shows new ways and possibilities of computer and art collaboration 8 Serves as an inspiration plot 9. Wider possibilities in different fields VIKTORIJA DOMARKAITE

What we tried to do in our project is to visualize invisible characters and working methods of our actual pieces. We created some symbols or drew a storyboard-like layout, in order to answer our assigned question: Why virtuality is essential for effective progress? Because usually we still need to put some words to describe the pieces aside the images. Therefore, how to express these descriptions effectively to people who have different cultural backgrounds as well as speak different languages is our concern. By transforming and visualizing information with recognizable symbols, it could make spreading processes faster and more reachable as well as even bring possible dialogues and contexts from the actual pieces.
