Selected projects 2007 - 2013

My name is Sofia Martinho and I am a Portuguese architect. After completing my Master’s Degree in Lisbon, Portugal, I lived and worked in Shanghai for three months. After returning to Portugal I decided I wanted to pursue an international career in architecture, preferably in Shanghai, a city I’ve grown to love. I consider myself professional, well-organized and resourceful; able to deliver on a tight schedule; detail oriented, analytical and eager to learn and improve. I tend to demonstrate initiative both independently and within a team environment. I am also driven, motivated and enthusiastic about working in architecture. While working as a team member at JH Design & Consulting in Shanghai, we achieved 2nd place in a competition for a new cultural centre for the Age of Peking University. In this professional context, I have been responsible for designing architectural projects, 3D modeling and creating presentation images. I am passionate about Architectural Visualization and 3D modeling. I have great modeling skills, either conceptual or presentation models. I am fluent in English (written and spoken); currently I am learning Mandarin and have already successfully accomplished level A1.4. On a more personal note, I am very keen on travelling and discovering new cultures; a foodie, a coffee drinker and a yoga enthusiast. I hope to pursue my interest in experimenting different conceptual and creative processes, so that I am able, in the future, to have my own practice.

EMERGENCY LIVING PROTOTYPE In case of emergency, where would you live? The Emergency Living Prototype aims for a solution: a fast built housing prototype, designed for an emergency situation, but keeping the idea of home.

The emergency living prototype (or V) is an experimental housing project. It is intended to be a house for an emergency, so it has to be built fast and have all the essential amenities needed in one, such as sleeping, cooking and hygiene areas, in only 30 m2. In that sense, the kitchen and bathroom were pushed to one side of the ELP, creating a compressed wall-like water area.

// 2007 The emergency living prototype is able to be assembled vertically, which provides for an added sense of urbanity

In order to be built fast, the ELP’s structure is built with a prefabricated steel structure and is covered with mdf panels. While there are infinite ways of combining these ELPs, the guidelines for the project insisted that only six of them were to be assembled. Because of this, two of the ELPs were rotated, so that public space was created in between the housing areas, where the staircase would approach the houses. This way, not only public space is created, but also a neibourghly feeling.

HOUSING IN AREEIRO // 2007 This housing project intends to maintain the pre-existing green areas and pathways. The verandas intend to provoke a healthy neighbourly relationship, as it is usual in Lisbon.

The plot is located in the neighbourhood of Areeiro in Lisbon, inside a built perimeter. The plot is a green leisure area with a path connecting two different avenues. The proposal intends to keep some of the existing green areas and the path. The formal solution to the building intends to show the spatial continuity of the plot by creating a void in the ground plan. The dwellings are ordered in a row and accessed by a gallery. Inside, they are organized around the water

areas (kitchen and bathroom), which allows the people who live in the house to arrange the space as they will. In Lisbon, one of the most common ways of neighbourly bounding is by using verandas; that’s where people put their clothes to dry, and also happen to chit-chat. In this project, there was a will to take this idea from the old neighbourhoods and transform it into a contemporary thought, hence the formal mismatching of the verandas.

ABCD // 2009 ABCD is a strategic urban project. Its key aspects are the Marina, the Park and a Congress Centre.

ABCD is an urban project located between the neighbourhoods of AlgĂŠs, BelĂŠm, Cruz-Quebrada and Dafundo, situated in the limits of two cities: Oeiras and Lisbon. The plot is located in front of the river Tagus and its northern limit is the train railway. The plan tries to create a connection between these two cities through a boardwalk, which would enable people to have a stroll, ride their bikes or even go to work every day with that connection to the river. There are three key aspects to ABCD: the connection to the river (with the creation of a marina and a bordwalk); the creation of

a park (which would promote the use of public space to leisure and exercise); and the reinforcement of Lisbon as a Congress and Events capital (by building a Congress Centre). These three big gestures are the core of ABCD. New dwellings, offices and shops are built in front of the marina, promoting the mixed-use city and maintaining a formal relationship with the existing neighbourhood. In that sense, the train will be substituted by a tram, a lighter form of transportation that would make the passage from the existing city to the new plan easier.

LAYERING HISTORY // 2011 Layering history is a work in progress: it intends to use the historical layers of the plot as a way to create the new project.

Layering History was an experimental project with a focus on methodology rather than on a final result. This project intended to explore the interstitial spaces left in the city by different years of building, by asking: what if no building was ever demolished? It was as if the project was an archaeological location, waiting for the excavation to begin so there would be found different layers of buildings, built throughout the (documented) history. In that sense, different situation plans from different years were taken as the different layers found if the plot were to be excavated. Then, those same layers were overlapped

and combined with a mathematical theorem: ++=+; +-=-; --=+. Thus, the combined plans were to become a succession of voids and solids, creating interstitial spaces which, even if they were never seen in the city, they would have happened, if the city was seen as a palimpsest. The process was very interesting and overwhelming with possibilities at times. And this is still a work in progress, as the final result has yet to come to the full potential of the process. THE COOKING FACTORY // 2012 The Cooking Factory is a Molecular Gastronomy Centre, a Lab for Reasearch & Development in Lisbon. This project stands on the idea that creative industries will help develop a thriving urban environment.

Nowadays, creativity is essential to the way we live and work, as it spreads throughout all of human activities. In that sense, urban planning has also been affected by a new creative approach. Since the 1970’s the Western civilisation has been witnessing serious shifts in how the contemporary city is approached. As society is increasingly heterogeneous with multiple cultural manifestations, it is not possible to exist a single strategy to creatively plan a city. There is, nonetheless, a method that can be followed, based on local distinctiveness, through the identification of local cultural resources.

To cook is one of the most traditional ways of passing on culture and patrimony, which is virtually reachable to all people. On the other hand, much of the built environment is directly related to producing, stocking, selling and serving meals. The social and economical foundation of old neighbourhoods has been rejuvenated because it was reorganized around production and consumption of food products or meals, and the strategic combination between gastronomy and architecture has been essential to this renovation.

In the master dissertation that accompanies this project, it is intended to understand how architecture and gastronomy may be deliberately combined to develop a creative urban strategy. It is also suggested that local gastronomy should be a main component to the patrimony, in order to develop a city’s identity. The project developed throughout the theoretical investigation aims to make up for the lack of a place in Lisbon that produces, investigates and spreads the knowledge on avant-garde cuisine.

LISBON ARCHITECTURE TRIENAL What is the function of an architecture exhibition? “Undisclosed” aims to expose the portrait of a changing practice. But is this an architecture exhibition?

This is not intended to be an unambiguous answer to this question, but a contribution to the debate, by suggesting the creation of a collective display with an experimental characterm which incites a reflection on the discipline of architecture and its tradition representations. “Undisclosed” aims to expose the portrait of a changing practice, which is becoming more open to other discourses and cultural productions. Representations of bult architecture are excluded from this display, since the purpose of “Undisclosed” is to perform as a critical instrument, exposing the architectural production that is not focused on building(s).

// 2013 “Undisclosed” will come close to processes, ideas, descriptions and contaminations to the discipline of other approaches and cultures, which would reveal a multidimensional vision of the architect’s work, which is rarely exposed.

move thing around to be able to see everything. This approach seeks to create an experimental presentation, while trying to go beyond exposing representative discourses of archtecture as a finished process - the building -, often the matter of a traditional architecture exhibition.

The presented work will not follow a specific disposition, as it is intended to expose the overlaps and intersections through cultures and disciplines. The overlapping of drawings, skectches and other means to the architect’s work process is important to the interaction of teh audience with the exposed work: as it is presented, people will be impelled to touch and to

Scaffolds, OSB panels and threaded rods will be used as the support for the exhibition. With this low-cost aesthetics, closer to a guerilla action than to a conventional architecture exhibition, it is intended to create an informal and less institutionalized relationship with the audience.

2nd place in competition. Responsible for designing the metallic structure, 3D modeling and interiors architectural visualization.

The current project was designed as a cultural center that would grow in time. It consists on a series of programmatic blocks that would be built as needed. There is a central corridor that brings all of the different programmatic areas together. From that central piece, the blocks can be reached, each with its own formal identity. The central glass corridor is what keeps the building coesive. One of the main features of this project is its metallic structure, which provides not only the structure, but also shading patterns for the corridor.

Block D5 is a mixed-used building, consisting on four housing towers connected by a shopping mall. There was a need to design the facades that would work either for Winter and Summer. In that sense, it was decided to use a ceramic material on the facade, that would endure the temperature differences, as well as to design a place to hide the AC devices in the veranda. The housing dwellings are duplexes, with one window providing maximum daylight inside, and one veranda.
