English A–Z In this section, English words are in alphabetical order, followed by the Spanish translation. There is information after each English word to show you what type of word it is. This will help you to make sentences. In Spanish, nouns (naming words) are either masculine (m) or feminine (f ). If the Spanish word has el or los before it, it is masculine; if it has la or las, it is feminine. See page 113 for the pronunciation guide.

Spanish A–Z In this section, Spanish words are in alphabetical order. They are followed by the English translation and a few letters to indicate what type of word it is – for example, a noun (n) or adjective (adj). Nouns in Spanish are either masculine (m) or feminine (f). Sometimes a word in Spanish might mean more than one thing in English, so there might be two translations underneath. Most of the nouns (naming words) here describe just one thing so they are singular. To make a noun plural (more than one thing) you usually just add an “s” – the same as in English. In Spanish, the other words in the sentence change

A

a (prep) to

a lo mejor (adv) maybe a menudo (adv) often a través de (prep) across abajo (adv) downstairs abajo (prep) under abarrotado (adj) crowded abeja (n) (f ) bee

too – el becomes los and la becomes las. The adjectives also change, usually getting an extra “s” at the end. In Spanish, an adjective usually comes after the noun.

(n) = noun (a naming word). Either masculine or feminine. Feminine nouns usually have an “a” at the end. (adj) = adjective (a describing word). These words can change depending on whether the noun they are describing is masculine (m) or feminine (f ). (adv) = adverb (a word that gives more information about a verb, an adjective, or another adverb) (conj) = conjunction (a joining word, for example, “and”) (prep) = preposition (for example, “about”) (pron) = pronoun (for example, “he”, “she”, “it”) (article) = (for example, “a”, “an”, “the”) (sing) = singular (one thing) (plu) = plural (lots of things) (m) = masculine (f) = feminine

Hablar español • Speaking Spanish

Speaking Spanish Spanish pronunciation is quite easy. In Spanish, you will usually find that all the letters in a word are pronounced. The letter “h” is not pronounced unless it comes after the letter “c”, making “ch” as in chocolate. Once you have learned how to pronounce the letters, it is easy to work out how to say a word, even if you have never seen or heard it before. In this dictionary, we have spelled out each Spanish word in a way that will help you pronounce it. Each syllable should be pronounced as if it were part of an English word. In each pronunciation, the stress of the word is indicated by capital letters. For example cuchillo (knife) = koo-CHEE-yo – CHEE is stressed, so you say it a little bit louder. Below are a few simple rules to help you with this:

Letter

Pronunciation

Our spelling

Example

c

is like th in “thin” not like th in “they”.

th

cebra

THEH-brah g, j

s

á

o

r

this sound comes from the back of your throat like the Scottish ch in “loch”.

H

with either a single or a double s, this is like the s in “missing”, not the s in “easy”.

s

sounds like “ah”, but shorter than in “harm”. The sound is not like “hat” but the “ah” is short and sharp.

ah

this is like the o in “not” and is even a bit like the aw sound in “law”. It is not as long as the o in “go”.

o

the r in Spanish is rolled (on the tip of the tongue) much more than in English, especially at the beginning of a word or syllable.

n’y

sounds like the lli in “million”.

y

sounds like the b in “bear”.

to act • actuar

Verbs This section gives a list of useful verbs (doing words). It shows the infinitive (to ...) of the verb. The most useful verbs, such as “to be” ser and estar, and “to have” tener, are written out so that you can see how they change depending on who is doing the action: I = yo; you = tú, usted; he/she = él/ella; we = nosostros/nosotras; you (plural) = vosostros/vosotras, ustedes; they = ellos/ellas.

You don’t need to say or write the pronoun (I, you, he/ she/it etc.) in Spanish, as the ending of the verb tells you who is doing the action. We have added them here to help you see which verb ending to use. We have written out three of the most regular Spanish verbs: to speak = hablar, to eat = comer, and to live = vivir. There is also a reflexive verb written out. Reflexive verbs are often used where you would say “myself” or “yourself” in English. An example is: to wash oneself = lavarse.

In Spanish, you use the usted and ustedes forms of the verb when you want to be polite, especially with someone older than you.
