Hello.

My name is Sofie Pringle. I currently live in Brisbane, and commute to the Gold Coast for work. I was born on the sunny Gold Coast, however relocated to Brisbane for university last year. I have recently completed my fourth year of my Bachelor of Design degree majoring in Architecture. I study this at QUT, in Brisbane. My university achievements include maintaining a GPA of 5.4 on a 7.0 scale. Further to this, I have achieved a credit or higher in over 90% of my subjects and hold a membership to the Golden Key Honours Society. This is offered to students that demonstrate excellent academic performance, and are within the top 15% of their cohort. I believe in maintaing a good work/life balances, therefore I priortise my time effectively. I enjoy regularly exercising and keeping fit - I believe a healthy body runs a healthy mind. I have a keen interest in many areas of the architec-

tural profession. I am particularly passionate about the hospitality, retail, commerical and residential sectors. I have undertaken work experience in and other training in conjunction with my studies to increase my knowledge and skills. I have worked with MPS Architects and the Brisbane City Council. I am passionate about designing architecture that pays homage to the site and environment in which it sits. However I love testing new ideas and techniques. I believe architecture should increase the inhabitants well-being and inspire society. My interest and passion for architecture and design began at a young age. I have always loved to draw spaces, and was mesmerised by buildings throughout my time living overseas. I enjoy learning, and have an appitude for getting things done. I am keen for any challenges as I flourish in challening environments. I have the ability to work autonomously, however I enjoy working in a team immensely.

Design statement Derived from BVN’s Gully House, the Musk Ave residence pays reverence to the Queensland climate and local site. The house aims to leave as little impact on the land as possible, whilst incorporating key parts of a house that are crucial to function and livability. The design works as an environment filter by incorporating the sites’ existing vegetation into the house through the central courtyard and key vistas. The courtyard is key to providing natural light throughout the house. It connects the lower level and upper level together through strategic view points. The rooms within are all able to borrow from one another. This enables flexibility and adaptability. The many verandahs and flexible spaces allows the inhabitant to accommodate their activites according to their needs, whilst also maximising the comfort in the Brisbane climate. The house fosters a delightful experience through the integration of the external existing vegetation and environment of the site. The internal courtyard acts as a central point, where circulation meanders around and view points throughout the house are offered. The extensive use of glass internally and externally helps to incorporate the house as a whole, with nature. It lets the user experience the house in layers, offering sneak peaks of views to various parts of the houses spaces.

Design statement The cinema studio is situated in Milton, Brisbane. The design brief given was to design a studio for film students on the public plaza that abutts the Suncorp entrance. This design was informed by the existing context. The building sits within a busy landscape and is influenced by the very essence of the site; motion. Motion infiltrates the site in many ways, shapes and forms. The unpredictable patterning of pedestrian traffic underpin the position and orientation of the cinematic landscape. Perched strategically above the pedestrian plane, the building allows for motion to circulate below, with the provision of public space and allowance of pedestrian circulation. The usage and motion within the site underpins the form. The angular lines have been derived from the moving and ever changing factors occurring throughout the site. Motion has morphed and evolved the form to result in a cinematic building that houses the arts. Coinciding with Suncorp Stadium, the building flows from the landscape, evolving from the existing platform.

Design statement The Brisbane River has long been a crucial aspect of the city; it is central to its livelihood and growth and has been a source of wealth and development. It has always remained a constant, a source of identity in an otherwise fragmented city. Hence, there is a need for connection, and reestablishment of this integral part of Brisbane. The river needs to infiltrate the land, and reinvigorate the dull landscape, breaching the edges between river and land. The intent of the design proposal was to reinvigorate connections that currently lack within the landscape: unification through blurring the edges and boundaries of River and Land. The connections were not aimed only within the localised QUT grounds, but also to greater contextual elements (Southbank, Brisbane CBD) and the integration of the river’s historical significance that is inherent within the site. The landscape is divided into 6 zones, each with a distinct purpose. All of these zones are interlinked to thus support the notion of connectivity and edge blurring, no distinct barriers separate. By enabling social interaction and ease of passage throughout the site (for all user groups), a much more favourable landscape emanates. The elimination of nodes and paths that currently cause confliction and the introduction of clear way-finding and orientation devices creates an environment that can be activated by people and thus create memorable places. The proposed landscape makes tangible and intangible connections to the everchanging ephemeralness of landscapes.

Within the Goodwill bridge/QUT abuttal, the connection to river and surrounding contextual places (connection to contextual identity) has been forfeit through the organisation of the landscape. A thoroughfare has been the sites dominant usage, which has neglected the sites potential for use (vistas, waterfront landscape, etc). Thus has resulted in an altogether disjointed, conflicting and confusing landscape for users. It ultimately provides an unpleasant experience for people. User groups currently include students, CBD work commuters, QUT staff, cyclists and joggers.

The new entrace allows for circulation and pauses. It is the connectivity route between Goodwill Bridge and QUT’s new Science and Technology Precinct. It directs users toward the terraced steps by way of blue glass devices in order to create a clear delineated pathway to follow. Along this path, users are able to interact with the blue way finding devices, and change the colour and texture, as shown in the perspective. The landscape allows for efficient, yet pleasant transitions between goodwill bridge and QUT’s Science and Technology precinct. Raised wooden platforms are incorporated within the terraced sandstone steps to encourage users to pause and rest upon, taking in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Way finding devices are utilised as an orientation and directional tool, but also as an interactive activity and protective element from rain and sun. When touched, the texture and colour of the material (glass) changes, allowing for an interesting interactive element that ties the Science and Technology notion into elements of the landscape.

Coffee shop Around the coffee shop there is a number of relaxation spaces. Some are under the shade of the fig tree; others are situated throughout the zone; on boulders or hilly grass. This allows for vantage points to be given throughout the site, and provides visual connections to the river and surrounding zones. This space caters for attractions, events, and social hangouts – a space particularly for place making. The coffee shop is utilised within this zone as a “draw” card to invite various user groups into the space and give them a reason to rest for periods of time. The landscaping within this area directs all pedestrians flowing from OBBG into the Zone 3 “Centre” eliminating conflicting paths. Way finding devices are positioned throughout the site to enable recognitions and orientation for users foreign to the area.

Design statement Mergence is a vision for Little Streetwithin Fortitude Valley. The vision is to create a place for creatives and other users to mingle, learn and inspire one another. Thew inspiration was drawn from the existing urban materiality within the site and throughout the wider Fortitude Valley precinct. Within Fortitude Valley there exists a range of cultures that have influenced the Valley overtime, these cultures can be experienced here on a day to day basis. Some of their cultures and customs are not reflected or represented within the urban fabric. This concept aims to interweave the cultures in a visually connected cultural “quilt�. The design represents each culture through different creative aspects; art, dance, colour, music and other culturally reflective activities programmed into the site. The colours used throughout the design symbolise connections to the cultures that reside within Fortitude Valley. The materials selected are a reflection of the industrial and rustic nature that characterises the Valley, which aims to enhance neighbourhood characteristics and overall industrial vibe of the area, rather than diminish.

wharves Design statement The purpose of the initial node was to provide rehabilitation services by a qualified exercise physiologist to people who suffer from an array of chronic conditions. The mode of rehabilitation through learning and exercise within this node enables people to conquer their chronic diseases through repetition and dedication in a stable, supportive environment. This proposal is a result of the experimentation of form, fluidity and connections. It is inspired by the body in motion. The new rehabilitation interaction centre at Howard Smith Wharves will break down the separatist notions of culture and exercise. It will facilitate cultural interaction through the specific programming of exercises relevant to cultures and their needs. The vision for the Interaction Centre at Howard Smith Wharves is a Rehabilitation Interaction Centre that holds the activities of exercise and sport. These activities are defined by the cultures that exist in the immediate vicinity of the site (Kangaroo Point, Fortitude Valley, New Farm, the CBD). These underpin the very function and arrangement of the spaces within the building proposal. Each space has been carefully considered, addressing the persons cultural needs, through the allocation of adaptable and appropriate spaces that do not degrade or undermine the culture. The building proposes a journey of exercise through various cultures, and gives various user groups the opportunity to learn and demonstrate their traditional sports and exercises that are representative of their cultures. Spaces have been designed to facilitate all user groups so that no cultural minorities are excluded. The inclusion of all user groups within the design of the spaces has enabled opportunity for a inter-cultural and social interaction centre to prosper. This thus creates a culturally diverse hub for exercise, health and well-being to prosper for all cultures and walks of life. The functional arrangement of spaces within the building, orientation and situation on the site expresses the notion of movement and motion of “Chi�, positive energy. People represent this notion of movement and chi (yang), whilst the buildings represent yang and stillness. Spaces have been arranged to encourage this flow of positive energy, connecting and arranging all areas of the site so that a positive feeling radiates throughout, and users achieve these sense of refreshment and rehabilitation when visiting, stopping and continuing on their journey.

Urban Module

Design statement The urban module is a multi-residential proposal, situated in Pinheiros, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The built up urban area within this region is expansive and radiates outward from an old centre. Toward the outer areas are informal favela settlements that are illegal, which have resulted from a lack of affordable housing coupled with low employment opportunity. These slums have high crime rates and are unhygenic, many are without basic plumbing. The built area seemingly has no end, with new developments cropping up here and there. Higher density developments need to be implemented within Pinheiros in order to prevent further urban spread and encroaching on the surrounding ecosystems. These developments need to provide for the shortage in housing whilst also injecting some economy and providing jobs and streams of employment. The proposed precinct has been divided into programmed areas. The redevelopment will foster unification of urban form, sustainability and ease traffic congestion through mixed use programming. This will enable less reliance on cars through the accessibility provided by the new proposed public transport. By opening up the centre of the proposed built form, large expansive public spaces are created. Visibility is also enhanced from neighbouring residents and thus discourages crime from occuring through surveillance. Agricultural and solar farm areas have been placed toward the north to maximise optimal solar gain for crop growth and energy production. High density residential is proposed toward the south west of the site to shelter the medium density from western sun as well as preventing overshadowing of lower scale forms.

The site has good solar access, with partial overshadowing from neighbouring buildings in the mornings (in winter more so). Strong breezes occur predominantly between the South and South-Eastern direction. Some calmer breezes are from the eastern to North-Eastern direction, with medium velocity from the North. Summer winds occur from the southern and northern directions, with Winter winds from the South-Eastern, Eastern and Northern aspects.

As evidenced in the infograph, Sao Paulo's current environment required improvement. Changes were to be made in order to increase the use of sustainable transport options, such as walking, cycling, and public transport. Currently the only public transport available throughout the precinct are buses, which are overused. Private car usage is a primary source of transport, which contributes to a great amount of carbon emissions annually. Landfill waste is also another problem of utmost importance in Sao Paulo, with landfill overflowing exponentially. In the near future, there will be a need for different housing types that accommodate for people at various stages of their lives, including the younger generations.

BIOMASS + BIO FUEL This source of renewable enegrgy will provide power to the units within the precinct, as well as the commerical and retail spaces. Biomass feedstock is grown in communal gardens and on the food production wall. Residents’ food and plant waste is utilised as feedstock. This ensures a close looped system is used within the development, managing the waste problem SOLAR PANEL + WINDOW SUPPLEMENTING POWER SUPPLY Where the biogas generated does not suffice, solar panels and windows will supplement the energy supply to ensure enerngy demand within the development is met. GREY WATER SYSTEM Household water from applicances and areas such as showers, washing machines and dishwashers will be recycled. This non potable water will be reused for flushing toilets and irrigation. RAINWATER COLLECTION TANKS Rainwater will be collected from the roof top tanks and supplied to residential appliances. Non potable usage. BLACKWATER Blackwater from toilets will be converted into biogas, utilising human waste as an energy source. Human waster is used as feeding material. Methane produced as a resulte of decomposition will power a generator, converting gas into electricty. packaging items
