PORTFOLIO Willems Sofie
Junior UX Designer Recent projects: ING – UX designer Toyota – UX researcher P&G – Designer
”Design is so simple. That’s why it is complicated." – Paul Rand I agree for 100%. It’s easy to make something complex. Making things simple and easy, that’s the real challenge! But how? We should listen and understand the ones that use the product on a daily basis. Step inside of the users mind. This is what I keep in mind for every project. Who am I? I am Sofie (24 y/o), a junior all-round designer from Holsbeek, Belgium. I completed numerous projects for international and local companies. Adobe, Sketch and Figma are my second language which allows me to convert ideas into prototypes and visuals.

Method.
1. Discover
2. Define
3. Ideate
Explore and understand the different aspects and opportunities.
What is the scope of the project and what do we want to achieve? Prioritise!
Explore possible solutions.

ING BANKING & INSURANCE
Design Center of Expertise (2021 – agile projects) Context: The last client I worked for was ING. As a UX designer, my job was to help them with all kinds of projects on various topics: cookies, cards, settings, mortgages, accounts, .. You name it! Tasks: Make accessible, usable and strategic designs for ING Web and App. To make those designs reality I had to align with many stakeholders from Belgium, The Netherlands, Poland, etc. Achievements: I learned to adapt in an agile working environment. Also my time management skills improved, which was needed to manage the different projects. Tools: Sketch

WORLD OF DIGITS
Website concept (2021 – individual project) Context: After my mission for Toyota (see slide 14), I worked internally for World of Digits. One of the tasks was to design a new website concept for World of Digits. The challenge was to communicate the identity of World of Digits and to make the website more intuitive to use. Tasks: Create an interactive website prototype for both desktop and mobile. Tools: Figma

AISIN - TOYOTA
Improve the hybrid experience (2020 – group project) Context: My first project at World of Digits was for Aisin, a Japanese company that innovates in automatic transmissions and vehicle information systems. For their client, Toyota, I researched the opportunity to develop a new dashboard indicator that helps hybrid drivers to reduce fuel consumption. This indicator would guide the user better than the existing dashboard indicators and the MyT app.
Dashboard indicators
Tasks: Research opportunity, define project goals, ideate, make wireframes and test them in a driving simulator. Achievements: Verify the product value and find the most optimal indicator. Tools: Adobe XD, Illustrator, Surveymonkey Reference: Delphine Bourhis – Senior PO Connected Services

How? Test drive with Toyota car and MyTapp, survey, desk research
How? Analyse and understand research results. Discuss the results with the team and stakeholders.
How? 6’up and design critique with the team.
What? Are the users satisfied by the existing Toyota hybrid products (app & dashboard)? What are other car brands doing? What are the opportunities?
What? Define the focus of the project and what we want to learn.
What? Think about possible solutions and define the top 4 concepts.

Wireframe 4 low-fi concepts in Adobe XD
How? Usability test (interview + observation). Each participant tries 1 indicator concept while driving. The concepts were shown on the dashboard.
Final report with all the results of our UX research and our advice for the continuation of the project.
What? Learn if the users like it and get to know which concepts are the best. 15
WODAIR – WORLD OF DIGITS
Airline website (2021 – UX certificate) Context: After graduating, I joined the company World of Digits as a UX/UI researcher & designer. During the first few months, I attended an internal UX training at World of Digits to become a certified UX researcher & designer. Tasks: The end-goal of the training was to create an interactive website prototype for a fictive airline named WodAir. The final prototype enables the user to book a retour-flight. Achievements: Learn and apply the different steps of the UX design process (e.g. user journey mapping, wireframing, design critique, etc.). Tools: Figma

UNIVERSITY OF ANTWERP
Bubble – Interactive mirror for elderly people (2018 – group project) Context: In 2018, I started a master in Interaction Design. The ‘Bubble’ project was part of this. Bubble is an interactive mirror that prevents loneliness among elderly people. The mirror shows messages and videos that are sent by family members or friends.

It is possible to receive multiple messages that are selected one by one. 21
JUNE ENERGY
July – Extending outside quality time (2018 – group project) Context: For another master project, I collaborated with June Energy. June Energy was looking for a new opportunity for their energy meters. The result is July, a sensor driven lighting controller. It controls the lighting under the terrace roof. For example, you will barely notice it’s getting darker, since July will complement the outside light with dimmed LED light. Tasks: Find opportunities and design a strategy, interaction, concepts and a final 3D model. Achievements: New opportunity for June Energy. Tools: Solidworks and Adobe (Illustrator, Indesign)

C+K ELECTRONICS
What’s your skintype? – Display for cosmetic stores (2017 – individual project)
Context: My bachelor thesis was in collaboration with the company C+K. They were searching for a new opportunity for their skin measurement tools. The result of this project was a display that guides customers of cosmetic stores to measure their skin type. Skin care products are recommended based on the skin type of each customer. Tasks: Designing the strategy, interaction, display and interface.

OTHER PROJECTS
Digital sketching I really like exploring different designs. In the image shown on the right, you can see how I created different designs for a lawnmower robot. These sketches were made during my bachelor.
26
OTHER PROJECTS
3D models I always use Solidworks and Keyshot to develop and render 3D models (see picture). I really like rendering visuals of a final product idea because it is very powerful to show while pitching it to e.g. stakeholders. 3D models are also printable thanks to 3D printers, which is very useful for usability tests. I made these 3D models during my third bachelor year.
