COMMMODORE’S REPORT | Troy Dalglish

At the start of my first term, the Club faced significant challenges. We were emerging from the pandemic with a decline in membership numbers following COVID. The cost of living was rising, impacting both the country and the Club. Key staff positions, including the General Manager and F&B Manager, needed to be filled. Pens were deteriorating with little maintenance having been done and costs were blowing out.

In January 2023, Michael Sassella was appointed as General Manager. Michael’s expertise in hospitality and his ability to stabilize our workforce, particularly in the F&B department, proved invaluable. His leadership led to the successful integration of Vanessa and Renato into shared roles as F&B Managers, significantly enhancing our food services.

The quality of our culinary offerings has greatly improved, thanks to Head Chef Andriy, who introduced exciting new dishes and popular events such as Friday night Steak on a Plate, Chilli Mussels, Friday Pie Day, Wine Dinners, and a range of Club functions

The new format “Chase the Ace,” was met with overwhelming endorsement by members, with nearly a full house each week.

Treasurer, Chris Pearson, alongside the Finance Committee, Finance Manager Dani Waller, and Michael, refined accounting processes and systems. A strict ‘no spend’ policy was adopted until cost-saving opportunities were identified. This approach led to a necessary 15% increase in member

fees in 2023, with a more modest CPI increase this year, impacting some plans but essential to keep pace with nationwide cost increases.

A new pen fee charging methodology began on July 1, 2024. This system will equalize fees for all pen holders, ensuring fairness and transparency.

The introduction of Northstar, a new web-based account management system, will enhance accounting, integrate with other software currently used, providing members with improved access and functionality.

Tom Purdon’s Works committee and Facilities Manager Dan, supported by the Bosuns Club, have completed numerous projects, including the replacement of the Jetty 1 wave attenuator, removal and replacement of asbestos roofs, upgrades to the Centreboard clubhouse and repair and maintenance to the jetties. Planning for projects such as the Bosuns Club Shed and renovations to the Ballroom and Administration Offices is underway. Jetty 8 has been approved by the DBCA, though the land swap agreement with the City of Melville remains stalled, awaiting new Titles from government departments.

In January SoPYC hosted the International World Windsurfing World Championships, showcasing our facilities and abilities to the world.

Additionally, throughout the year the Club hosts a plethora of Associations, Organisations and Regattas: Sailability and SailOn provide valuable support and life changing experiences to those less fortunate and those who have served in armed forces. In partnership with Rotary, Cruising Butterflies returned this year, a humbling and joyful success. We ran two Goolugatup Sailing Carnivals and hosted two Women’s State Keelboat Championships, National 9ers Championship, Viper State Championship, 125s and O’pen Skiffs and a couple of Peli-Powerups. Many juniors and some senior members competed at regattas around Australia and the world. Murray Duthie continues to excel while John Hassen

and Kevin Griffiths won the 2024 FF15 Australian Championships. All eyes will be focused on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games where Conor Nicholas and Nia Jerwood will represent Australia in the 470 Class.

A major concern of Management and many members was the cost of running the Sailing Academy. With declining revenue and increasing costs together with a decline in Junior and Centreboard membership, this was not sustainable. Drastic changes were required with a revisit to the ‘2015 Future of Sailing’. The serious study involved research and opinions from around the globe

Volunteers are the backbone of our Club. It requires hundreds of volunteers and the value of these unpaid contributors to the Club cannot be calculated!

We engaged an OH&S consultant to transform our existing documentation into a more dynamic, easily manageable format. This upgrade aims to streamline safety practices, ensuring that our OH&S documentation is current and practical.

I extend my thanks to the General Manager, Michael, and his staff, with special thanks to Rachael, Club Secretary, for her dedication and hard work.

To the Management Committee I extend my gratitude for your unwavering support and service to the Club, acknowledging that it was not an easy ride, but I was lucky to have a steadfast, united team.

A special mention goes to Christina, who took on the roles of Rear Commodore of Regatta and Centreboards when no one volunteered. She persevered and got the job done.

Finally, there are three members whose steadfast dedication has been a cornerstone of our success. The contributions of the Vice Commodores Dave Ewart and Dave Markham have been significant and deeply appreciated.

Treasurer, Chris Pearson also deserves special recognition. His fierce passion for the Club, unmatched generosity, and relentless problemsolving ability have been indispensable

It has been a privilege to serve as your Commodore and after a short break and a few days of sleep, I will look forward to continuing our journey, our Club’s journey, together.

VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT | David Markham

The past year has brought numerous challenges for both the Club and the community. The significant rise in the cost of living has tightened budgets for many, while the housing shortage has created unprecedented employment challenges. The transient population from the eastern states and overseas, which for years has been a welcome addition to our WA work forces, has been dramatically reduced with the lack of accommodation. Among others, the hospitality industry has felt the impact acutely with increased wages, operational costs and a reduction in patron spending.

Despite our best efforts, filling the marketing role has been a challenge. Our office staff have admirably managed additional marketing duties, but finding a suitable candidate within budget has proven difficult. The reformation of the Publications Committee, with a dedicated team led by Bernie Kaaks, brought a wealth of Club knowledge and experience to our publications, enhancing their quality and relevance.

Our approach to Food and Beverage Management evolved this year to innovate by dividing the responsibilities. Vanessa Toulabi has stepped up and now manages Functions and Events, while our newest addition, Renato Santoro oversees the bar and Quarterdeck. This combination, along with Executive Chef Andriy Boyev’s commitment, resulted in positive feedback and increased facility usage. Initiatives like the extended Happy

Hour and popular dining specials have been well-received by members. With the recent reintroduction of Fine Wine and Dining Events, Andriy and his team are certainly showing off their talents. All F&B Management are committed to customer service, so we look forward to the innovation and variety their future ideas will bring to the Club.

Facilities Manager Dan Lawrence and Tom Purdon, Chair of the Works Committee, spearheaded the replacement of asbestos roofing on key buildings. Aged and deteriorated sheeting posed a contamination risk to the roof space and ceilings in both the ballroom and centreboard clubhouse. To ensure safety and accessibility, it was decided to replace the existing ceilings with gyprock. In the past, maintenance and repairs have often been minimized or delayed to reduce costs. Unfortunately, this practice can lead to additional problems in the future, typically resulting in even higher expenses. Ongoing maintenance remains a significant task but the dedication of Dan, Tom and their respective teams is commendable.

The Functions Committee faced difficulties without a leader but the recent appointment of Geoff Warwick has revitalized this enthusiastic team. They are now assisting with the Commodore’s Ball and planning future events, promising enjoyable times ahead.

The new format of Chase the Ace has been a success, increasing sponsorship, minor prizes, and the weekly jackpot. This change has led to a steady increase in Thursday night attendees, often making

meal bookings at The Quarterdeck essential. The enthusiasm and support from sponsors and members have made this event a highlight of the week.

After eight enjoyable years at this Club and continuously serving on committees from day one, I find that my work and personal commitments have suffered, therefore I must now choose to focus on those areas and step away from my commitments at SoPYC.

As I close my final report as Vice Commodore and as a member of the Management Committee, I reflect on a statement I have heard several times over my tenure, particularly in recent months: ‘We are a club, not a business.’ While this is true, it is often forgotten is that this Club operates with a budget exceeding $10 million annually and holds assets of significantly higher value.

The management committee and staff bear the immense responsibility of being diligent and responsible in managing members’ funds as well as safeguarding and maintaining the Club’s water and land assets. To neglect this responsibility in a businesslike manner would be gross negligence and jeopardize the Club’s assets which generate the income necessary to maintain the highest standards. The committee I have served on has always kept this in focus. Although this approach was not always popular, their businesslike commitment was essential.

It is now up to a new committee to carry this responsibility forward. Time will tell if they are up to the challenge and commitment. I wish them well.

REAR COMMMODORE’S REPORT | Christina Heydon

Let’s start the story by congratulating our Olympians, Conor Nicholas and Nia Jerwood (Tokyo Olympics), who made it to the Medal Race in Marseille and finished ninth overall in the mixed dinghy class. What a great achievement.

Congratulations to everyone who has competed this season at Club, State, National, World and the Olympics. The SoPYC Women’s Team has achieved impressive results with Mara Lowry and Kirstin Norris as helms. Thanks to Mark Gooding who has rejuvenated the S80 fleet and initiated crew training. The Red Witch fleet is growing with more donated boats and the Sea Scout youth continually improving.

My gratitude and thanks to all the people on the volunteer teams that constitute Regatta and Race Management. The Regatta Committee are Sailing, Centreboard, Power, Ocean, Cruising, T&D, SRRC, RO and Rules. The Regatta members have their teams of handicappers, trophy officers, scribes, crew finders, training, functions, membership. Race Management has the commitment of volunteers doing thousands of hours of work and Race Officers give their talent, time and commitment. Without them we have no racing: P/C Les Swinton, John Rooke, Lynne Newton, Phillip Draber, Martyn Compton, Mark Abercromby, Matthew Till, Margaret Cooper, with perfect work from Doug Cowie our chief mark layer.

The OWG staff have the usual busy

job keeping up with changes this year, thank you.

Retirements: Thank you to NRO P/C Les Swinton and Trish for their decades of dedication to Race Management. SoPYC would not be where it is without your contribution. Lana Kaaks has retired from 25 years of on-water duties but will remain with the Membership Committee.

Thanks to Chris Pearson of Wilson Marine for donating $50 vouchers to the Sailing Community. These are awarded to the best story on sailing days; the catch phrase being “don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story”. At the beginning of the season, stories were about “MoB” and equipment failure, which highlighted that people do go overboard and we do need to practise the drill. Equipment failure stories remind sailors to check gear now, not when the summer sea breeze hits you! One great story came from the Juniors who “forgot to put the bung in” and sank the boat. Sailors need to know that things do happen to everyone on the water and these stories help to inform.

The Winter Racing Rules Nights have been presented for over ten years and are now concise onehour sessions with a special feature “Tactics on the Start Line” presented by Paul Eldrid from One Sails. I have seen sailors’ rules knowledge improve and many questions being asked through the weeks and most protests being resolved at Arbitration. At Arbitration the sailors say “we just want to know which of us was in the wrong” and accept the Arbitration decision. This is what Sportsmanship and the Rules is about!

The Windsurfer World Championships were covered in detail in Soundings issue 16. World events have a two-year lead time to enable water space to be booked, sponsors, jury, race management, on-water and land-based volunteers to be found. SoPYC acquired the event nine months out. NRO P/C Les Swinton became the Chairman of the OC and SoPYC needed “speed” to

ensure that all these requirements were met. Les’s ability to organise a World event in a short time frame was extraordinary. There were 252 sailors from twelve countries with friends and family arriving pre and post-Christmas. The State Windsurfer Championship prior to Christmas was a good test event and settled everyone into their roles. The important part of this story is the performance of our 150 volunteers whose pre-event, post-event and Event day efforts were invaluable. The same Volunteers moved to the 9er National Championships a couple of days after. We did it, well done! I love these two quotes “Do or do not. There is no try” from Yoda and “You can keep all of the people satisfied some of the time, but you cannot satisfy all of the people all the time”. This season has been a big commitment and I have endeavoured to “do” and to “satisfy”, but the most rewarding part has been meeting so many amazing members and volunteers with many diverse thoughts. I would like all volunteers to reach out and ask someone to come and help them on their next adventure to enable that person to “feel” the sense of achievement that we all feel as volunteers!

Barry Arnold volunteered to write up an article on volunteering. When he started on the project, it became obvious that volunteering is huge. Barry’s draft has been presented to Management and recommends that Management creates a sub-portfolio called “Volunteers”.

In closing, remember to respect each other, the hierarchy of your Club, your Club’s rules, Australian and World Sailing Rules.

We need to discuss succession planning and the retention of youth members. Consider when you reached driving, voting, university age and your whole life changed! Was the bank of Mum and Dad still covering all your costs? You gained a new freedom of choice! Lots of input required.

12 GENERAL BUSINESS

13. CLOSE of MEETING and Commodore’s Bell Ring

Information for Members:

All members are entitled to attend this meeting, however, only financial Ordinary, Centreboard, Honorary Life, 60 Year Honorary and Country members shall be entitled to vote.

ANNEXURE A – Background Information for Motions

A1. Information provided by the Trustee

The Fund was established in 2015 by then Commodore Paul Ward to exclusively finance the promotion and support the objectives and activities of the members of SoPYC and in particular:

(a) To provide travel assistance to the Club’s junior and youth sailors for State, National, and International Regattas.

(b) To provide specialist pre-Regatta coaching and/or coaching at Regattas.

(c) To assist in the purchase of necessary coaching aids.

(d) Such other projects for the benefit of the junior and youth members that the Trustee decide.

At the Club’s 2015 AGM, SoPYC members voted in favour of providing monies to the Fund as part of their annual fees. Prior to the establishment of the Fund, the Club granted monies to junior and youth sailors from general revenue. In recent times the Club’s budget for these grants has grown to $18,000 per annum.

Up until the 2024/2025 financial year, the Fund has had insufficient monies to assist the Club with funding grants to our junior and youth sailors. However, now that the Fund has grown to $200,000, the 2024/2025 contribution to Club grants will be $9,000 or 50% of the total grant budget. Contributions and investment returns to the Fund will continue to grow, further assisting the Club fund these grants.

The minor annual financial contribution from members, which represents about 1% of a full ordinary membership, is small compared with the benefits accruing to our young SoPYC sailors.

Monies granted to junior and youth sailors are governed by the Program of Merit Policy. This Policy is available on the Club’s website and details eligibility requirements and the approval process.

The Fund’s annual audited accounts can be found on the members’ Portal.

2. Information provided by John Hassen

“At 30 June 2023 the Fund had net assets of $174,808 which for all intents and purposes are represented by funds on deposit with the ANZ. It owed the Club $890 for audit fees ($600) and filing fees ($290). At 30 June 2024, the net assets are expected to be approximately $200,000.

Members are in fact supporting elite youth sailing programs twice, once through the compulsory “donation” to the Fund and again through the travel and program of merit payments made and charged as an expense of the Sailing Academy. These payments through the Sailing Academy cost centre amounted to $120,150 in the seven years to 2023 including only $6,400 in 2021 because of the Covid impact on travelling. Or put another way, the six year average cost excluding 2021 is almost $19,000 per annum.

As members we have no idea who received the $120,150, who approved the payments and what, if any, mutual obligations were imposed on the recipients. As an aside, RFBYC publishes the recipient names and amounts of all grants in their equivalent of Soundings.

There is little point in incurring the costs of audit and filing fees to have a separate entity to house these funds. The structure should be unwound and the funds used to offset Club debts with a corresponding credit to a T&D Section Fund. The funds so credited should be credited with notional interest income with a corresponding charge to interest expense at the Club’s average cost of borrowings less a margin of 2% on the basis these funds are essentially being lent to the Club on an interest free basis.

ANNEXURE A – Background Information for Motions

An argument could be developed that similar interest adjustments should be made on other section funds where the sections effectively have provided interest-free funds to the Club, but that is a matter for consideration by the Management Committee.

As a first step, notional interest should only be credited on the T&D Funds so as to allay concerns the travel and training fund has just been appropriated to reduce Club debt.

In terms of costs, it is suggested travelling and program of merit funding be debited against the T&D Section Fund or a transfer from the T&D Section Fund be made as source of funding to the Sailing Academy.

It is also recommended the current levy on members be revoked on the basis of say 6% on $200,000 is funding that would allow grants of $12,000 to be paid each year going forward. This does not mean that grants in excess of this amount could not be made from the T&D approved budget”.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Financial Performance

This year we have seen an improved financial performance with solid growth in revenue from almost all operational areas. Pens and Mooring revenue grew 21%, Membership Fees 9%, Fuel 14%, Travel Lift 10%, and Food and Beverage 6%. A modest Net Surplus for the year of $81,271 was recorded in an environment of continuing and challenging cost pressures.

Major projects, for which funds were previously allocated, have been finalised during the 2023/2024 financial period and include:

1. Completion of Jetty 1 wave attenuator project.

2. Removal of asbestos roofs and suitable replacement on three Club buildings.

3. Replacement of fuel bowser.

The net surplus of $81,271 for the period, as compared to the prior year’s net deficit of $589,046, represents a sound turnaround. For comparison, earnings before depreciation and Interest (including bank fees) for 2023/2024 totaled $1.15m, this is in contrast with $399K for 2022/2023 and $701k for 2021/2022.

The Club’s cash reserves remain sound with $821,761 cash on deposit and net borrowings, post 2023/2024, in line with the previous financial year’s net debt.

Notable expenditures exceeding forecasts included insurance premiums, borrowing costs, and food and beverage wages. The period’s legal expenses related to several matters including an ongoing dispute with a past member and actions against two contractors. Please note, it is anticipated total legal expenditure for 2023/2024 will be offset by an intended settlement with a contractor.

Trading

Once again members strongly supported the Club’s Food and Beverage operations with revenue increasing to $4.487m in 2023/24, a rise of 6%. With a settled team in Food and Beverage, there is now scope to improve efficiency of service and to align gross margins with similar operations.

Net surplus from fuel sales doubled during the period to $55,902. With the installation of a new fuel bowser, previous issues with outages should be minimal. Fuel gross margin was consistent with the prior year’s return.

Non-Trading

Total non-trading income rose 21% or $804,158 during the year whilst non-trading expenditure increased by 5% or $190,288.

Administration revenue rose 22%, partially assisted by profit from the sale of club assets. Administration expenses rose in line with revenue to produce a net deficit of $1.88m, an increase of $32,440 from the previous period. Sizable increases in borrowing costs of $58,864 and insurance premiums of $49,239 were the main contributors to administration costs exceeding the previous period’s expenditure.

membership expenses were steady during the year.

Pens and Moorings revenue was solid with revenue growth of 21% or $406,902 and related expenses were $56,518 below the previous period. Travel Lift and hardstand net surplus was $143,530 for the period, an increase of $75,443 from the previous year.

Works expenses totaled $693,208 as compared with a budgeted forecast of $672,932. Both Sailing Operations and Sailing Academy performances were better than budgeted and Sponsorship was slightly below the previous period.

Budget 2024-2025

The 2024/25 Budget forecasts a net surplus of $298,532 Membership fees, pens and moorings charges, and other associated prices have increased by 4% in accordance with motions carried at the Club’s HYGM. Other revenue is forecast to grow 7% for the period and associated costs by 5%.

Budgeted cash generation of $1.177m less annual loan repayments of $268k adds to cash available to spend of $909k. The Management Committee has proposed another conservative capital expenditure program for the coming year of $750k. With this in mind total unrestricted cash is forecast to be $606k as at 30 June 2025. SUMMARY OF

Membership revenue increased by 9% or $98,733 and

Reason for Nominating:

Sailing and junior participation needs to be carefully and strategically fostered in order to continue the momentum and growth built during 2021-24. Without strong leadership from members with their feet in the water, the junior sections may not continue to grow as the club desires. Without regular volunteers who support Junior Sailing we will not have a space for beginners to find their own breeze; allowing conditions to build their confidence. A junior race course (bravo) is an essential tool for volunteers to learn on-water roles; providing a grass roots environment to train the future sailors and volunteers at SoPYC. Young families are the future of SoPYC.

In business, I have managed a staff in excess of 50 employees and have been a committee member for my industry association.

Club Participation: I currently race Lasers and Div 1 keel boats. I volunteer as a safety boat and start boat skipper when required. I was previously on the club T&D committee and have handicapped for junior fleets. I have raced in the club’s Geraldton and Billy Run offshore races on multiple occasions. As a junior I power time trialled and went on Club-organised cruises with my family.

Reason for Nominating: I am a life-long member of the Club with a keen interest in its on-water activities. Now with a young family, I’d like to do my part to see the Club grow and prosper so that my children (3rd generation members) can enjoy the Club long into the future and have the wealth of experiences and memories that I have had along the way.

LEN RANDELL OAM

Vice Patron Len Randell celebrated his 98th birthday in March this year, but you would never know it. As active as ever, he still sails on the Swan River and enjoys life to the full.

Len’s work as a naval architect has produced an extraordinary range of boats, from the humble Pelican training dinghy to the sail training ship Leeuwin II. His designs include sailing and power boats, training craft, leisure craft, crayfishing and fishing boats and luxury cruisers. Len’s designs catered for home builders and professional boat builders. His boats have been built in timber, fibreglass, plywood, aluminum and steel.

Showing an interest in boats as a teenager, Len was inspired to design a boat himself as a fifteen-yearold. Subsequently he designed boats as a hobby whilst employed by the Public Works Department. Len was self-taught and his designs, beautifully suited to Western Australian conditions, quickly gained popularity, enabling him to set up a commercial practice working from home.

By 1952, he became an Associate of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects in London. As a designer of racing and cruising yachts he established his reputation, but his fishing boat designs launched his commercial career.

All Len’s designs were created with an eye to both efficiency and elegance because he considered the artistic element of the design process was just as important as the technical side.

The entire boating community was delighted when Len Randell was recognized with the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to sailing and naval architecture.

The Club is enormously proud of their Vice Patron’s achievements.

THE RODNEY NOTT SHIELD

With no nominee in 2023, the Rodney Nott Shield in 2024 was awarded in May to a worthy recipient in Amanda Watson, one of the Club’s most energetic and enthusiastic contributors. The Shield is awarded to a member who has given outstanding service to the Club over a long period of time; someone who has given their time, energy and love to our Club because they want to keep it strong and make it even better.

Amanda Watson has those qualities in spades.

Joining the Club in 2002 with a successful business background including hotels, a dry cleaning business and timber flooring company, she currently owns three AirBnB units.

Amanda served on Management from 2007 to 2013 and again in 2022. She was Power Yacht Captain from 2014 to 2018 and a member of the Power Yacht Committee continuously since 2006. She served on the House Committee from 2007 to 2016 and is currently active on both the Archives and recently formed Publications committees.

She has been a generous sponsor, supporting the Spacesailer 27 Association and the Wooden Boat Festival and was also a Grand Sponsor of the Club.

As a competitor she has crewed on a variety of sailboats and has represented the Club as a member of the Women’s sailing team. Her record in time trials is amazing, winning seven Club championships and five State championships as Amazon’s navigator for skipper Steve Wall. She continues her navigation with skipper Garry Morrison on her power yacht Lone Star

Her willingness to become involved should be an inspiration to all members.

SAILING SECTION REPORT |

Prior to the commencement of this submission for the yearbook, I took time to read the last few years contributions. It is interesting that they are all similar with the same sort of challenges being addressed year in and year out. With that in mind, I am going to only focus on what the Committee did as the sailing stories will come out in the division reports.

Sailing Committee

This year the Committee comprised of a full team of committed members. The members to thank for their contribution are:

Brian Cross Sailing Captain

Wendy Jorgensen Sailing Vice

Captain

David Thoms Division 1

Rob Male Divison 2

Martyn Compton Division 3

Mark Gooding S80

Matt Rose SS27

Bruce Uren SS22

Ernie Little H28

Collectively this committee achieved many notable improvements for their classes and divisions and for the sailing section in general. Some of these things included:

• Crew Finder operating effectively

• Course changes to southerly starts on Wednesdays

• Budget to spend on increasing keelboat participation

• Transparency on Sailing Section finances

• Change to points scoring system for abandoned races beginning next season

• Monthly updates to members on Committee activities

• Massive Prize Night

• Participation Plan

Crew Finder

This has been driven by Bruce Uren and Mark Gooding and we finally have it working reasonably well and while it is now up on the Club website, we are looking to make improvements moving forward.

Course Changes

Listening to the members, the Committee was asked if we could not sail via Martin and Weaver if the breeze was less than five knots. This has been complied with by the Race Officer and the Start Team.

Transparency for Sailing Section Finances

To better understand the costs of running our section, we are this year receiving a monthly P&L for the Sailing Section. This now allows the Committee to better understand the costs involved and assist them in decision making.

Changes to Points Scoring

Starting next season, where a race is abandoned while yachts are on the water, those yachts will now score points. This ensures that those who at least started the race will be rewarded against those who did not.

Prize Night

With the low numbers at past prize nights, the decision was made to hold it on a Sunday after Frostbite, to encourage better participation. As a result, our prize night was allocated to Sunday May 26th. However, due to unfortunate circumstances, the Centreboard Section were not going

to have a prize night, which would have been the first time in the 78year history of the Club. The Sailing Committee invited the centreboard section to join us which they enthusiastically did.

The outcome was a prize night with 380 participants and more than 340 meals provided by the Club. F&B staff did an outstanding job, and we thank them very much.

Participation Plan

Participation is one that always rears its head and this year has been no different. While some sections go up and some sections go down, the outcome remains the same. We still have the same number racing on a Saturday and a Wednesday; however, this year our twilight racing numbers were up. Was it due to the great sponsorship offered by Century 21 and Nail Brewing or was it the weather? Who knows? It was a great outcome nonetheless with many groups staying on to enjoy the culinary delights of the Club.

Moving forward, the Committee has been actively seeking suggestions from members and is currently building what will hopefully be a participation plan for the next and subsequent seasons.

POWER SECTION REPORT |

At the time of writing, the Power Section only just started its season. The Power Section

AGM was held in August and saw the election of the 23/24 Committee including myself, Maria Cook as Captain with Jason Claricoates continuing as our Vice Captain.

We were pleased to welcome Judy Bailey (Social/Functions), Justine Barron (Publicity/Scribe) and Debbie Swain (Membership Rep.) to join long serving members on our committee, Claude Mancini (Treasurer), Darryl Wilkes (CPYA Rep.), Steve Wall and John Meldrum (Courses & Team Selection), John Cooper (Pens & Moorings/Marina Compliance), Lynne Cooper (Trophy Officer), Amanda Watson (Cruising Rep.) and Graeme Phillips (Sponsorships).

Our starter is Margaret Cooper ably assisted by our new start team of David and Marilyn Barton with Robert and Judy Willis.

The 22/23 Power Season culminated with our Prize Night in October 2023. The following results were announced:

Reads Print Trophy

Champion Boat (400)

3 The Dolphin, Jason Claricoates and Caroline James

2 Dalusional, Troy Dalglish & Victoria Blanckensee/Justine Barron

1 Thanet, Guy Skinner & Fiona Lyons

Our members once again, competed consistently in the CPYA State heats and managed to hold off a fast growing and improving Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club team to retain the State Teams Competition. However, for the first time in many years we did not win the State Championship. That title went to RFBYC’s Havana, skippered by Tim Cummins.

To celebrate the 2023 season and build camaraderie, the Power Committee hosted what is becoming a popular event; the Christmas Jetty Party open to all club members and guests. Jetty 6 was ablaze with coloured lights and Christmas decorations, with the competition becoming quite fierce for the best decorated boat, which was won this year by Helen and Justin Taylor’s Stillwater

Our on-water events started in March 2024 with the final event for 2023, the Xantippe Invitational Twilight Time Trial. This event is one of four invitational events on the calendar that the committee is working hard to reinvigorate with cash prizes, music and special meals afterwards. These prizes and special events are only possible because of our very generous season sponsors, most of whom have supported us for many years.

Thank you to:

Advanced Business Abilities, Bravo Marine Services, Capital Recycling, Century 21 River Residential, Coffee Point Marine Services, Jennings Plumbing and Gas, Metalwest, Scribe

Design Group, Specialised Marine Group, SQP Engineering, Success Fabrication, Tyrepower Port Kennedy, WA Bos and Wilson Marine.

A successful and well attended pre-season time trial training day was held in April with thanks to the power section committee members for making it possible. It is always great to have new boats joining our time trialling fleet.

Our 2024 season started in May with a new format for our Opening Day Ceremony. This included the presentation of the RIP (Rapidly in Pursuit) Trophy to Commodore Troy Dalglish by Club Champion PC Guy Skinner. Following the official ceremony and sail past, VIPs joined the time trialling fleet so that they could experience time trialling firsthand. The new format concluded with results, live music, and a yummy Indian buffet meal.

The Power Committee is working hard to build our fleet and keep time trialling strong at the Club. We are trying new ideas to encourage participation and are very grateful for the support of our members. Our goal is to always have more than twenty boats time trialling consistently but to build that up to thirty. Our club and our section are only as good as its members and it survives or thrives because of volunteers. We all need to do our part. It is never too late to get involved and we are all very happy to help you get started.

CENTREBOARD

470 Class:

National 470 Champions Axel Fleet and Jamie Randall have been asked to train in Marseille with the Australian Olympic 470 Team to assist them in their final preparations for the Olympic Games. Nia Jerwood and Conor Nicholas will be representing Australia in the 470 Mixed class at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, what a fantastic opportunity for Axel and

Jamie to be training with them at this world class venue. We are so proud of their commitment to training and their teamwork.

O’pen Skiff Class:

In January, three of our O’pen Skiff sailors headed to Queensland for the 2024 Australian O’pen Skiff Championships. The event was held at Lake Cootharaba Yacht Club

between 8-13 January 2024.

The Club hosted a wonderful event and the windy conditions suited our WA sailors.

Oskar Bromberger, Eloise Chernoff and Kaison Pulse represented SOPYC, with Kaison placing 1st overall, Oskar 3rd overall and Eloise 8th overall (3rd girl). Kaison and Eloise will be heading to the O’pen Skiff World Championships in Italy.

Optimist Class:

The 2024 WAIODA Optimist State Championship was held at Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Fremantle Annexe on 9-10 March 2024.

Victoria Chernoff, Murray Duthie, Orlando Ligovich, Charlie Purt, Seth Till, Asher Williams and Rhys Williams represented South of Perth Yacht Club supported by coach Michael Compton.

In open fleet, Murray placed 1st overall for the 3rd time! Seth placed 3rd overall and Victoria placed 1st girl. In the intermediate fleet, Rhys placed first boy.

All sailors came away with a huge experience, growing friendships and lots of learning to help propel them to their next level.

The Optimist class fleet thanks SoPYC for providing a coach and RIB for this event, it was greatly appreciated. Congratulations to all our Centreboard sailors!

ON WATER GROUP |

The year has blazed past and it has been a bit of a whirlwind!

New faces, bringing fresh perspectives and ideas to help the club build great club competitions and help each section get the most out of their on-water events and endeavors. We welcome Tait into the fold providing great knowledge from his coaching experiences with hockey and football clubs and administration experience from his time with WACA.

The year started off with a diminished fleet for the Geraldton Ocean Race and Return (due to various boats undergoing maintenance) but conditions graced those who ventured, with leading ocean teams close to record pace. A highlight was the return of an SS27 to the Geraldton fleet. King Canute outshone her Division 2 rivals in IRC and PHS, proving without question that it’s not the size of the boat but the determination and resilience of the crew that can lead to success on the water.

The Club took on the enormous task of hosting the LT Windsurfer World Championships. The event was a huge success and behind the scenes we processed over 250 entrants and daily results. We built the slalom and overall online score board from scratch to allow the efficient production of

results. It wasn’t just those World Championships though…we also ran 29er Nationals, Windsurfer States and Viper640 States. The packed schedule was a testament to the resilience of the team and the integral and AMAZING volunteers (over 100 different members across all events) to push through and provide a great experience for every competitor and participant.

The whole summer has been a big boon in experience for our team, now ever confident we can provide successful large scale and intricate

regattas moving forward!

Winter season saw the successful completion of the time trialling season for 2023, culminating with a new champion ‘400’ team! And no sooner had it finished, the new season seems to have come in to 2024 with great enthusiasm – currently six new teams have joined. The Power Yacht Section should soon return to an average of thirty boats for each Club event.

The OWG team continues its push to increase participation as we work hard with staff and section representatives. Whilst this all remains ongoing, there are some positive initiatives and ideas that will continue to grow in the coming year. Evidence of this has been courtesy of the Sailing section with the increase in process of the ‘Crew Finder’ which has reached many boats with great success in increasing crew retention and keeping boats out on the water.

As our office expands and evolves we pay homage to all those who have helped in the office in official and unofficial capacity over the past twelve months, with special thanks to Rear Commodore Christina, Sailing Captains Brian (good on the reception desk!) and Wendy, Coaching Admins Teyah and Millie, and many more.

Next year we hope to develop the many ideas we have with our working committees and provide the sailing and power sections greater opportunity and competitions on the water for 2024/25.

WORKS

We are two years in and it seems like we have only scratched the surface of the never-ending challenge of improving and looking after our much-loved Club and its assets. With future projects such as the administration revamp, air conditioning the main bar, ongoing upgrade of the ballroom, keeping tent land from falling down, kitchen upgrades, bar upgrade, toilet refits, club entrance gate revamp, bosuns shed and all of that and I have not even mentioned the ongoing jetty works, hard stand and security works. What fun we have had with completing works such as the asbestos roof removal, centreboard outdoor area upgrade, jetty 1 wave attenuator repairs and upgrades to all jetties plus many other minor projects. None of this would have been

possible without the dedicated support of our committee that is made up of:

• Bob Harrap – our jetty and all things expert who also works timelessly in the volunteer bosuns club, who have also quietly achieved so much behind the scenes, saving the Club a small fortune in the process.

• Bob Kelliher – without him we would be an unorganized shambles with no minutes, Coffee Pointer updates and no reporting to the Management Committee.

• Bryan Rodgers – quietly sits listening to us banging on and going round in circles, then quietly interjects with pearls of wisdom bringing us back on track with some great left-of-field thinking.

• Lastly and most importantly we

have Dan Lawrence our Facilities Manager and his team of merry bosuns. Without them we would have achieved nothing. I can honestly say that this team of our paid staff are one of the most proactive and hard-working set of doers that I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

So, from me, thank you to this great team. We have achieved so much and are excited to achieve much more into the future.

To all of you who will listen please respect our staff and volunteers. They are all working hard to deliver a service to all of the Club members and whilst we would all love everything to be done yesterday and cost nothing, they are not miracle workers and are the very fabric of our great Club.

MEMBERSHIP | Nikki

During the past year, your Membership committee has changed slightly. Nikki Kukura (Chair), Sonia Johnson, Wendy Jorgensen, David Kazim, Lana Kaaks, Ann McCluskey and Debbie Swain. We have also welcomed MaryAnne Reid. With representatives from the Sailing, Centreboard and Power sections, we can make more informed decisions, maintaining membership numbers and attracting future members.

Membership Liaison Officer Nicole Taylor, who attends to the day-to-day administration of Membership and is keen to assist you or direct you the appropriate section of the Club. I would also like to thank Louise Forrest, our minute taker, for her contribution.

Currently, the Membership Committee is planning a membership drive that will target our Centreboard and Off-the-Beach sailors. This section of the Club has always been a source of future Club keelboat sailors and occasionally Olympic and international sailors. Many of our Club yacht owners are struggling to maintain crew numbers. If you have any children or grandchildren that would be interested in Sunday sailing, contact the Club. Also watch out for any promotional material in Coffee Pointers for future membership drives.

The Club at the request of the Membership Committee will be introducing an amended hard copy membership form to avoid any ambiguity and to pinpoint exactly which sections new members would like to be involved. This means that the various Section chairs can contact new members directly to encourage participation.

Induction meetings are held on every third Wednesday of the month, where new inductees joining our Club are introduced to the variety of benefits which membership can bring. We have introduced a guest speaker for each of these inductions. At the conclusion of each induction session, we all adjourn to the Yachtsman’s Bar for refreshments, where we are joined by Members of Management who are present on the night and those members who have just participated in Wednesday afternoon sailing. Such a great atmosphere!

New Members’ Cocktail Parties were held on November the 17th and April the 19th providing the opportunity for our flag officers, past and present, the Management Committee and Membership Committee to mingle with new members and share their experiences and stories of this wonderful Club.

GRAND SPONSORS

Thank you to our Grand Sponsors whose continued support is fundamental to the success of the SoPYC Junior Sailing Academy. Funds raised through the Grand Sponsorship program not only assist our young sailors with quality coaching and training, and opportunities to represent the Club interstate and abroad, but also to ensure that sailing and boating is accessible for everyone.

This year the Grand Sponsors committee has continued to work on supporting the members, organising their Club display rosters, and ensuring their flags are flying in the Club grounds. We have Sundowners planned which offer networking opportunities and feature chances to meet some of our junior sailors and hear their stories.

More importantly, we are always working towards growing the sponsorship numbers to continue support of the SoPYC Junior Sailing Academy; and anyone interested in becoming a Grand Sponsor can contact marketing@sopyc.com.au for more information.

PENS & MOORINGS

The 2023-24 Pens and Moorings Committee has comprised members Geoff Warwick (Chair until March 2024), Ash Hicks (stepped up to Chair in March 2024), PC Frank Dalglish, Gordon Dunbar, John Cooper, Anton Jennings, Neil White, Doug Smith and Mike Markham. Thank you Geoff for your leadership and efforts over the past few years on the Management Committee.

We welcomed Nat Ambrosio into the staff role of Pens & Moorings Administrator in January and she has worked cheerfully and tirelessly to support the members and committee and ensure our management systems are in good order. In this period, a number of process improvements have been put in place with the assistance of Mike and Ash to ensure a better member experience when dealing with Marina Compliance inspections.

The Committee is supported by a hard working team of Marina Compliance Inspectors comprising Mike Markham, Mark Hayman, Darryl Wilkes and Bruce Uren with support from Frank Dalglish, Ian Stewart, Ash Hicks and Greg Northover. These three yearly inspections play a key role in mitigating fire, sinking and pollution risks as well as jetty infrastructure damage at the Club.

Water Pen waiting lists have been relatively short this past year due to a supply of vacant pens, however land pens remain in high demand. The Committee has recently arranged for the remarking of eleven row B bays to be widened from 2.5m to 3.0m to ensure safer storage of members boats.

The Committee ensures that allocation of pens is a fully transparent process for all members. Sailing vessels are prioritised and applications are dealt with on a first come, first served basis.

LADIES LUNCHEON GROUP

The popularity of our Ladies Luncheon Group has gone from strength to strength over the past twelve months, with close to 100 guests enjoying our monthly functions.

Our committee has worked hard to keep luncheons both interesting and entertaining, so we’ve seen light-hearted events like Christmas in July and belly dancing at one end of the scale, with seriously interesting speakers like Professor Fiona Wood, explaining the intricacies of burns surgery and Cristy Burne an International Award-Winning Children’s Author.

Although the core group are Club members, many take the opportunity to bring their friends as guests – indeed many of these guests are now welcome regulars who have also formed new friendships. Social interaction is a key to the success.

The Ladies Luncheon Group is one of the few activities run by the Club which is not wholly focused on boating, a feature which may account for its wide diversity of attendees and also subject matter.

The Food and Beverage staff has as always been incredibly helpful and supportive with all of our luncheons. A big “Thank You” to the Staff.

The Good Grocer has generously sponsored the Ladies Luncheons for the past year providing three beautiful hampers to be raffled each month.

The Committee comprising of Rose Midolo (Chairperson), Val Barron (Coordinator), Lana Kaaks and Kristine Pettersson (Committee) have once again been working hard to achieve these outstanding luncheons.

Planning for 2024/25 is well advanced and we are confident of maintaining the high level of interest and entertainment.

BOSUN’S CLUB | Rick Steuart

Constructing Racks and polishing up the Doors

The St Ayles skiffs are behind us and again thanks to Club Patron and Past Commodore Colin Cowden who officiated on Sailing Opening Day for the christening of the second skiff Ballina C

The skiffs are now beginning to be rowed, there are two or three teams using the boats on Saturday and Sunday mornings and there are plans to open up the use of the boats on other days when the weather allows.

Our next adventure was the World Windsurfers Championship and we were asked to build a number of racks for the two hundred and fifty surf boards, their masts and sails. A total of fourteen racks had to be ready two weeks beforehand and once the timber was piled outside the shed doors, away we went, with the first made a week later. We finished on the 15th of December 2023, just in time.

We began again in early January

with the need to take the racks to pieces and recover as much timber as possible, for these were to be used to restore some life in the old centreboard furniture and build some bar tables to be used in both the centreboard and the main Club house. In between these jobs, we found ourselves cutting up marine ply for temporary jetty boards for the Club bosuns.

The club’s cannon from the Duyfken has finally been restored, just in time for Power Opening day. Another a major task was taken on with the restoration of the Club’s timber doors with kick plates put on to prevent the scuffing that has marked the last 35 years. Other projects have been taken in hand and the restoration of the H28 table is at its final stages with the largest of the timber lecterns undergoing a re-veneering under the care of the bosuns. Some of the smaller

We are open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Please feel free to drop into the shed (next to the Club Bosun’s shed), where coffee is at 10.30 am.

occasional tables located around the Club - donated by Club membershave been taken back to the shed and are being given some restorative work over winter. Barbecues are a feature every couple of months to allow for a bit of healthy relaxation or to celebrate the end of a project.

There are other jobs planned as well, but thanks to the team of volunteer bosuns who tend to the rescue and safety boats each week as they are the unsung champions of the bosuns club. These are the bosuns club members at present; Doug Cowie, Dave Roberts, Bruce Cadee, Bob Harrap, Eric Schwab, Theo Berden, Brian Cross, John Midolo, Campbell Stewart, Rick Steuart, Mark Abercrombie, Bob Motteram, Kevin Doig, Alan Sharpe, Nick Sharples, Steve Grover, John Oliver and everyone else whose names I have ina0dvertently missed.

ARCHIVES & HISTORY |

The Heritage Room is being freshened up and hopefully will have picture rails installed so that we can hang some more of the pictures that have been hiding in the cupboards and back rooms of the Club.

The Club is installing a new software package and as a result the Archives and History group will be able to offer some of what they have learned over the last year. As some of the clubs around the river already have an area that encompasses the history of their club, it’s a good idea to offer our members and those interested in the Club’s history a chance to learn what our members said and did over the last few decades.

The Archives and History group have been busy with the necessary task of collating images and stories to rebuild our past and in the doing so we have had some wonderful finds. Imagine getting a call from the coroner’s court to pick up some SoPYC files lodged with them six years ago to find we had a newspaper archive reaching from the late 60’s, through to 1979. The reasons as

to why they were lodged with the coroner’s court? That’s another story but those of an age will remember the Shirley Finn affair and it was thought there may have been a link to our Club. We’ll never know, but there is a frisson of interest and the request by the coroner to ask for old Club files still makes the hairs on the back of your head stand up.

The formation of a group of the club historians encompassing the river and ocean clubs has been mooted and SoPYC has been invited to attend the meetings with the view to consolidating the knowledge on the river. However, these are early days and the opportunities are endless.

The opportunity to assist Club members and staff has been consistent and apart from assisting with the updating of the Life members and Commodores boards we have:

a) Finished work on the Almanac (a club membership tool) and handed it over to the Club.

b) Answered several requests for information on old members by staff and dealt with some of

the enquiries on behalf of the Club regarding boats and past members by interested parties.

c) Retrieved and scanned Club information from various sources including the coroner’s court.

d) Provided source information for both member and staff enquires.

e) Acted on the Club’s behalf to clarify foundation member enquiries and on occasions have been able to provide assistance to past members.

It has been brought to the A&H group’s attention that over the decades, the Club has had several people who sailed with the Club as crew, but weren’t actually members of the Club. Queries for these people is time consuming and fruitless in the main. The Archives and History group hopes to scan old membership applications in the effort to establish who were members of the Club before membership file management tools became available. This will require significant time and the use of OCR scanning equipment. We look forward to assistance from the Club.

DIVISION 2 REPORT | Rob

The Division II fleet continued to operate at strength throughout the year, with participation and competition being high compared to recent years.

Whilst the results will show there has been some disqualifications and retirements, it has been very competitive, action and fun packed year!

Looking back over this year (23/24) compared to last year (22/23) there have been some statistics worth noting. Some comparisons are easier to make than others, as in some cases the amount of actual scheduled races varied from year to year, but for the Saturday Summer Series there was the same number of races each year, so as a direct comparison.

Although we had fewer yachts registered for the series, we actually had more competing in the races. Even better when you look at the number of participants each year. In 22/23 we had 136 starters, (they may not have finished or recorded a score, but they were out on the water intending to race!) yet in 23/24 we had 158 starters, over 16% more than the previous year. Imagine our

numbers if we can keep that level of improvement each year!

Wednesday afternoon (Midweek) racing maintained its presence looking at the registrations and participation numbers. 22/23 saw 19 registrations with twelve actually competing, whereas for 23/24 only eleven registered, but with all eleven competing at least once. Magic Moment continues to be the fastest boat, while the S80s are next inline and within them Fair Game has significantly improved. Cover Drive is always there to pass any of the front runners that slow down. Olive Marie has turned in some firsts on handicap and good to see Minka has been seen out for the first time in quite a while. For the Twilight Series, whilst difficult to compare directly due to the different number of races each year, from the registrations and starters it certainly had a good year with participation improving 33% year on year, nine competing; up to twelve this year. Hopefully the changes the Club are looking at for Twilights will encourage a few more boats out onto the water in 24/25.

Great to have George Ruul back to the Division after a stint in Division I, similarly great to have PC Mark Nicholas back in new yacht Addiction after his stint in Division I.

Cole 32 Championship within Division II

This season’s Cole 32 fleet was a strong and competitive group of five boats with George Ruul being welcomed back to the Coles in Mingara Good Act’s Greg Munt was very competitive upwind and with more consistent spinnaker legs will be a force next season. Peter Were’s Cover Drive was our most consistent competitor in both Saturday and Wednesday sailing, performing consistently as always. Tawake Rakai (Against All Odds) and Barry Arnold (Colusion) battled it out for the 23/24 Championship. Colusion finally took the honours with five firsts after the two drops, followed closely by Against All Odds with a first, three seconds and a third.

If you have any questions or comments relating to Division II, please contact our Representative Rob Male on 0417 985 310.

SPACESAILER 22 REPORT

It has been another successful season for the SS22 fleet, albeit with a small fleet. The competition between the top three boats has been intense with many highly enjoyable, friendly close tussles.

Perhaps the most memorable event was David Mickle’s Mele Bilo III taking out the Commodore’s trophy in the closing day combined fleet pursuit race. It was a beautiful day for sailing and David’s crew, including his daughter Imogen, made the most of it. These are always fun races as the big boats try to mow down the smaller boats in a sprint to the finish.

Another highlight of the season was the celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the launching of the Spacesailer range of yachts. This was marked by an informal sail by a large fleet of Spacesailers from all around the river and a social gathering which included an excellent speech by the very talented, yet modest designer and builder, Kim Swarbrick.

The continuing strength of the fleet is rooted in the participation in the SS22 State Championships

series where we join boats from East Fremantle Yacht Club and Claremont Yacht Club in a series of seven races. These races are well liked by the fleet as it facilitates sailing against boats from the other clubs at six locations around the river. This is one design racing at its best and we love it! This season Peter Lewis’s Crossroads came second in the Championship and won the consistency (handicap) point score. It was the first time in ten years that the championship had not been won by a boat from South of Perth Yacht Club. The winning margin was a single point! Meanwhile Wildfire came 3rd on a countback.

For the summer season the results were:

Club Championship

1st Wildfire

2nd Crossroads

3rd Mele Bilo III

Bruce Uren

Peter Lewis

David Mickle

Club Consistency (Handicap)

1st Wildfire

2nd Mele Bilo III

Colin Delane’s Eutopia won the midweek Division 3 Summer series and Wildfire the Autumn series. Wildfire also won Division 3 at the annual Cockburn Sound Regatta.

SPACESAILER 27 REPORT |

The SS27 Association enjoyed another well contested State Championship competition with hosting of the six heats being shared by four of the most prominent clubs on the river. A dominant performance by Elise Manners and her crew, saw Carrageen II (RF190) secure the State Championship at heat 5 of the competition. Carrageen II’s dominance was also evident in the Consistency competition.

SoPYC continues to house the majority of Spacesailer 27s in the metro area. Participation numbers in the club competition remained steady. From the registered racing fleet of eleven yachts at the Club, we saw an average participation rate at six yachts. The fleet remains strong with a depth of competition.

In the State Competition, the registered racing fleet of 15 yachts saw an average participation rate of eight, with the biggest fleet being nine. We enjoyed some very close competition in both the Club, State or Association level competitions in an enthusiastic yet always sporting spirit.

In the Wednesday afternoon autumn racing series for Fleet C, Mark Popham (Force Five) placed second.

In the Wednesday afternoon spring racing series for Fleet C, the Spacesailer 27s enjoyed a full podium; Mark Popham (Force Five) placed first, David Hanham (Random Times) placed second while Brian Saleeba (Abeelas) placed third

In the Wednesday afternoon summer racing series for Fleet C, Brian Saleeba (Abeelas) placed second. Results were not available for the Wednesday afternoon winter racing series for Fleet C at the time of publication.

None of the SS27 fleet participated in the Windward / Leeward Racing Series this season.

A non-competitive highlight of the season was again the annual Twilight Cruise for the Parkinson’s Association. Of the now twenty SS27s on the club register, ten turned up on a pleasant evening in February to take out a party of 45 Parkinson’s Association Members and carers on their annual sailing outing. We were blessed with a very pleasant evening which was enjoyed by all.

S80 REPORT

Another great season on the water with the S80 Association and our SoPYC section fleet. SoPYC’s S80 fleet stood out with great performances in all key association events during the season:

• Winner Metropolitan Championship

• Winner Swan River Championship

• Winner UK Halsey Sailmakers Championship

• Winner State Championship

• Winner Ron Tough Match Racing series

• Winner S80 Association Fastest Boat Award Don’t Panic!! Mat Selby & crew

SoPYC S80 Club Series

Club Series

1st Don’t Panic!! Mat Selby

2nd Fair Game Sue Game

3rd Shadowfax (Jim & Mark Gooding)

Wednesday Sailing

Wednesdays saw Fair Game and Shadowfax compete regularly in Division 2 over the season, with occasional races by Hobo and Glasgow Kiss. Zinfandel sailed by new owner Peter Coghill has made a welcome entry into recent events.

S80 Association Racing

Metropolitan Championship:

Shadowfax skippered by Mark Gooding won all five races at EFYC, NYC, SoPYC, RPYC and RFBYC opening days in a terrific series with varying conditions from light to very heavy, sharing the series with Mat Selby (Don’t Panic!!) overall third and winner of the Consistency series

2024 S80 Legends

Twelve boats took part in the annual Legend’s race hosted by RPYC, to see Ray Smith steer Frakka to claim the trophy for a second time.

South-West Championship

A fleet of ten boats gathered, with two Perth crews borrowing boats and a women’s champion keelboat team skippered by Ruth Lawrence flew in from NSW to compete. The locals were spearheaded by Miss Behavin (Phil Slee) and Escape (Darren Tinley).

Some very close racing took place over the seven races and in the end, just one point separated each of the placegetters.

1st Miss Behavin, 2nd Escape and 3rd Shadowfax (Mark Gooding). Next year!

Swan River Championship and UK

Halsey Sailmakers

Shadowfax (Mark & Jim Gooding) took out the Swan River Champs and Don’t Panic!! (Matt Selby) took out the RPYC UK Halsey Sailmakers Trophy short series event. Demonstrating their strong performances, both boats finished second to each other in respective events.

Ron Tough Match Racing Series

The S80 Ron Tough Match Racing series was conducted by RPYC with three boats apiece from SoPYC and RPYC. The honours clearly went to SoPYC taking all three top spots in what appeared to be a Club vs Club square off. Glascow Kiss (Greg Tonnison) won all of its five round robin flights and both finals in convincing style and now has it’s name on the spectacular gold trophy (sadly nailed down at RPYC!). Shadowfax (Mark Gooding) was runner up and Don’t Panic!! (Mat Selby) finished third.

S80 WA State Championship

The 2024 WA S80 Association State Championship event was held again in Cockburn Sound and conducted from the RPYC annex.

Four SoPYC boats took part with Shadowfax (Mark Gooding) taking out the trophy with a convincing win. John Hassen on Glasgow Kiss finished second overall while Don’t Panic!! (Mat Selby) claimed a heat win in race five and Abbey Road (James Barton), grabbed third place in race six.

S80 Sailor Development Training

The S80 Association ran the Sailor Development Program (Spinnaker and Racing Skills) for all keelboat sailors within the Club again this season at SoPYC.

A big thank you to John Connell and John Boswell for taking on the lead training roles, with support from Mat Selby and all the other sailor volunteers who have offered their time and energy to support those learning to improve their skills. We plan to run the SDP courses again next season –so keep an eye out for the dates.

Next Racing Season

The S80 section is looking to encourage more S80s to sail on both Wednesday and Saturdays next season. We are also trying to increase boat numbers with the idea of attracting new S80s and keeping current S80s at the Club. So, if you are interested in sailing or racing why not become an owner of an S80 and share great yachting enjoyment and satisfaction in a one design fleet? We have boat opportunities waiting for a keen skipper and crew. Contact section rep Mark Gooding on markgooding@bigpond.com

HERRESHOF 28 | Ernie Little

Although we are now into our sixty-second year of racing as a class division, like all other sections of the Club, we are feeling the effect of declining numbers in our fleet sailing competition. We know the problem is not isolated to our Club, but that the phenomenon is characterised within most sailing communities throughout the world. It seems younger generations are preoccupied in other areas and aren’t as interested in pursuing traditional outdoor sport activities.

The challenge for our fleet in particular, is to now focus our attention on encouraging the next generation of persons over the age of 45 years. It is the perfect age and opportunity for recruiting new sailors and skippers into the wonderful world of sailing! I recently placed a post on Facebook, aimed at those in their fifties, offering the opportunity to take up sailing. The response was amazing and gave an indication that there are many potential sailors available out there in that age group, awaiting a little encouragement.

Wednesday (mid-week) Competition.

The H28 fleet has remained static over the past year, with eight yachts

regularly participating. Symptomatic of our aging skippers and crews, nearly all retired, the preference is to sail on Wednesdays on shorter courses and no spinnakers. We usually have five to seven participating H28’s sailing in the midweek competition during the spring, summer and early autumn periods. In winter, the numbers participating are down.

Saturday Competition

Club Championship races usually attract five or more H28’s on the start line, but consistency races generally average three to four yachts only. The Division is working hard to improve that situation.

On the plus side, Nerrima has

re-entered both the Wednesday and Saturday competitions after a break of about three years. Les Brooker has got the yacht going well, as reflected in the number of trophies and awards he and the crew won during the year. Geoff Reason has retired from work and he has been busy, with much appreciated assistance from other Division members, resurrecting Carina from the bottom up. The hull is fully recaulked and Geoff is now completing the reconstruction to resume racing again soon.

Barry Skinner and Peter Broadbent, have sadly, announced their sailing days are over, but they are committed to keeping The First Jindarra participating in the H28 Club sailing competition. Whilst negotiations are

underway at the time of going to press, Ralph Newton, well known Division 1 Skipper, is temporarily on the helm of The First Jindarra.

RED WITCH REPORT | Kelvin

The Red Witch fleet at SoPYC is active and building.

The Red Witch yacht is a one design class that was started over fifty years ago with colourful hull colours apart from white. The fleet is growing with many young people and newcomers becoming involved. This past summer has seen greater participation numbers of crew, with many being young people trying out Red Witch sailing for the first time. Apart from the Red Witch Madge, which had a different crew sailing each week, many other yachts had new crew, both male and female, sailing with them.

Whilst it is great to have lots of novice crew members, it is a challenge to have good competent crew members available each week and even harder to have good trained and competent skippers.

This season we focused on training new skippers to helm a Red Witch yacht. On Bewitched, Darren Brown skippered with some very good results. On Witch Doctor, Daniel Marshall has skippered all season after Richard retired. On Hornblower, Ryan Dudding took over the helm when Tony Snow was

absent on holidays. On Shenanigans , we’ve had Johann Lasmona, Daniel Marshall and Ivy O’Toole who have skippered and achieved winning results each time. On Escapade , Isaac Wyatt continued to skipper and perform very well. All of the skippers mentioned above are 18 years old or younger. These are exciting times.

Now while summer is over, many of the young people have joined the crew of H28 and S80 yachts for the winter series and we look forward to seeing them all back onboard the Red Witch yachts come October.

WOMEN’S SAILING SQUAD |

The Womens Sailing Squad continues to work with the development of sailing amongst the women of the Club and necessitates the skills required to make it happen for the team. The friendships developed from the participation in these events, allows new members to slot right in as the squad welcomes like minded female sailors of any experience and skill level. The teams were drawn from the full group and they were able to continue with some of the most experienced sailors from last year.

The training was principally on the Bakewell 8s this year, as the teams took the opportunity to develop the needed rapport on the water. The Club did book in the needed training sessions on the Foundation 36s, prior to the racing to allow them to familiarize themselves with the racing boats. The coaches this year included Richard Maher, Alan Smith and Guy Skinner and they were generous with their help.

The Squad was up to racing speed by the 7th of April, when SoPYC hosted the 2024 Womens State Keelboat Championships. RO Les Swinton again took the lead with a great team of volunteers for the event and sailing in the tricky sou –easterlies we had two entries this year with Mara Lowry heading up a team

of Vicki Blanckensee, Sonja Vlaar, Melissa Baines, Deborah Conroy, Rachel Baveye and Trudy Murphy. On the second boat; Kirstin Norris helmed with Amanda Watson, Wendy Jorgensen, Fiona Lyons, Therese Trouchet, Jacqui Lund and Jan Stearne. Both teams were well prepared and Mara Lowry did well on the first race taking a good first over the line, following up with some good mid level finishes as all teams seemed to struggle with the perversity of the slight sou-easterlies. However, Mara and Kirstin worked well to keep their teams in the racing and it was the brilliance of the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing team that floored the opposition of the river. Mara and her team took a third and Kirstin’s team sailed to a fifth in the regatta.

The Inter Club Championships were sailed on the weekend of the 19th to the 21st of April out of Mounts Bay Sailing Club with only one team allowed to participate. Kirstin Norris took the helm of this blended team with Victoria Blanckensee, Wendy Jorgensen, Trudy Murphy, Mara Vlaar, Deborah Conroy and Rachel Baveye. The ladies team did very well to take a third on the day managing to edge out the combined team of Geographe Bay / Dunsborough Bay Yacht Clubs. But it was a very tightly fought morning with only four points separating first and

sixth and the four races were a credit to the race organisers.

The sailing by the ladies team dovetailed in well with the overall efforts of the rest of the racing teams on the weekend and SoPYC achieved a very creditable second overall up against Royal Freshwater Bay YC who claimed the regatta.

The Squad would like to thank the On Water Group and coaches for the on-water coaching; training and skill sessions over the period leading up to the two events. In particular, thanks to the very patient Alan Smith, Guy Skinner and Richard Maher who worked with the teams in training. We would like to thank Sailing Captain Brian Cross, who took the time to drive Rick Steuart and his camera around the course for the Womens States.

A nod of recognition to SoPYC co-Sailor of the Year, Rita Nesdale who has carried the torch for women’s sailing since the 1990’s and has sailed across nearly all the codes available to her, with Flying 15s and the Herreshoff 28s as her favourites in recent years. The Womens Squad looks forward to furthering the cause of women’s participation in sailing and competing in the Club and on the river.

Please free to speak to the On Water Group who will be glad to put you in touch with the squad.

SAILABILITY

Sailability is a not-for-profit volunteer-run program.

Mission

To provide opportunities for participants to experience the joy of recreational sailing on the Swan River, regardless of their ability, mobility status or personal circumstances.

2023/2024 Season

Out of 26 potential Wednesdays during the summer season, we sailed for nineteen. An average of 36 volunteers and 33 participants turned up each week. That totals 795 sailing hours for our participants and their carers!

The seven non-sailable Wednesdays were due to high winds or temperatures above 35°C. Two of those Wednesdays were well-spent socializing at a Christmas and Endof-Season sausage sizzle.

This season also saw a few university students and some helpful school volunteers joining the mostly ‘experienced retired’ volunteers. That brings our total volunteers to 67, ranging from 15 to 90 years old. All our volunteers hold a current Working with Children check and

many are first aid certified. Happenings

• 26 November 2023 Bunnings Sausage Sizzle fundraising event planned and executed by David Robinson, our jetty marshal.

• 13-15 December 2023 Meat Raffles organised by acting treasurer David Staniforth-Smith supported by SOPYC’s Fundraising Committee chaired by Treasurer Chris Pearson.

• 1 May 2024 Sailability strategy meeting to chart our future roadmap.

• 19 June 2024 Sailability participation at the Cruising Butterflies event.

• Off-season ‘busy bees’ vessel maintenance and repair, safety equipment checking, recertification of participant slings, jetty hoists, and safety life jackets, all aimed at getting the fleet and equipment ready for next season.

Our Fleet

Ranges from two-person 303 dinghies, Etchell, Windrush, Spacesailer 22, Red Witches, and powerboats. This range

accommodates the differing needs of our participants, with some requiring beanbags and hoists for additional support. During sessions, these vessels can only sail in designated safe protected water, supported by a safety boat and experienced volunteer skippers and crew.

Acknowledgements

Sailability continues operating through the support of the Club and its members, the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our sponsors.

An honourable mention to our biggest sponsor this year, Peter Lewis for donating his Spacesailer 22 in immaculate condition as well as paying for its pen fees till 30th June 2024. Crossroads is an ex-state champion yacht.

• Alan Wilson SoPYC member and Tyrepower Port Kennedy for replacing flat trailer tyres.

• Barry Walsh SoPYC member, for a donation of yacht fittings.

• Bunnings Melville and Officeworks O’Connor for vouchers.

• Carl from Extreme X Sails for repairing six sails at a cost.

• Chris Pearson SoPYC member and Wilson Marine for donating goods from his Chandlery.

• David Locke & the SoPYC bosuns, On-Water Group and SoPYC Management for their ongoing support and the construction of the new wheelchair path that links the carpark to the junior clubrooms.

• Nell Gray Fashions Pty Ltd for Sailability red shirts at cost.

• Parker Black and Forrest Pty Ltd (Liz Warman, our Coordinator) for donation of Raven Wheelchair Ramps.

• Rotary Club of Melville for their kind donation and awarding our Chairman Mark Popham with a Paul Harris Fellowship.

• We are privileged to be surrounded by like-minded people who directly or indirectly are dedicated to serving the community in the name of sailing. We look forward to more volunteers joining us and sharing priceless joyful moments with the participants. Onward Season 2024/2025.

FLYING 15 REPORT

Several factors have to combine favourably if any event, sporting or otherwise, is going to be deemed a success. In the case of a sailing season, factors like competition, comradery, fair play, travel, physical and mental exercise, insert any other reason that motivates you to get on the water. Tick enough of those boxes and, even in the depths of winter, October and opening day can’t come quickly enough so you can get out and do it all again.

In a strict one-design class like the Flying Fifteen, you would expect the rewards from competition to be the principal reason to be involved in this class. Our style of Sunday afternoon racing certainly attracts the sailor that craves tight even racing and prepares all our sailors for competing in the major regattas. To that end,

and has been reported widely through other club publications, John Hassen and Kevin Griffiths travelled to Lake Macquarie in New South Wales and won the Australian Championship with a very strong performance in the last five races and Nick Jerwood and Brad Sheridan won the State Championship for the fifth time in the past six years. Consistency results also featured South of Perth sailors with Karen and Russell Dawes winning at National level and Jen Sims and Warren Hastings winning at State level. Next season, the competition steps up with the Nationals being the qualifying event for the 2025 World Championships to be held in Weymouth, United Kingdom.

For travel a bit closer to home, South of Perth boats accepted the invitation to be involved in Geographe

Bay Race Week and were well represented by a team of seasoned party animals that are likely to make this a regular event. Needless to say, what happened in Busselton…………..

Presentation night was a very well organised affair with Saturday and Sunday sailors assembled to celebrate all our champions. Mike and Paul Dunbar got the gong for the Club Championship and Jen and Warren further crowded up their trophy cabinets with the Club Consistency.

The volunteers who make all this happen on and off the water cannot be over-celebrated. As has been stated on a regular basis, our racing program is the envy of many and it’s those volunteers who turn up week after week who make it all possible. Thank you all and see you next season.

This was another busy year for the Viper fleet. The usual schedule of a State Championships in December at South of Perth Yacht Club was followed by Geographe Bay Race Week in February with Club sailing rounding out the season.

Twelve Vipers competed in perfect conditions on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd December 2023 at South of Perth Yacht Club. A total of eight races were completed in winds ranging from 5 -15 knots. Winds were variable in both direction and strength making for big gains and losses on the course. Despite the wind variations, racing was extremely tight with all twelve boats finishing within two minutes of each other in most races. After racing was completed on Saturday a BBQ provided welcome sustenance for

sixty-five people.

It was great to see some younger sailors entering the fleet making it a multi-generational sporting event!

Congratulations to Rod Beurteaux, Jon Stubbs and Simon Wilder sailing You Get in the Bowl, winning a close battle from Murray Howson, Craig Hansen and Jordan Mears on Atheris.

Six Vipers joined the 74-yacht fleet for Geographe Bay Raceweek in February 2024. The Vipers sailed a ten race, three-day mini regatta. Day one saw gusty twenty plus knot conditions which tested the crews and resulted in a number of wipeouts. The weather returned to pleasant with 5 – 15 knot offshore breezes in warm sunny conditions for the following two days of racing. Racing was tight on the windward leeward courses with a number of different

individual race winners.

Congratulations to Rod, Jon and Simon on their win. In second place was Graeme, Heather and Gavin on Good Viperations.

The Viper fleet has been building over the winter months. Not a lot of sailing but the number of boats at South of Perth Yacht Club is growing. A big welcome to Shaun Hughes who has brought AUS 116 Velocity from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club to join the fleet at South Perth. Great to see some younger blood in the fleet not only with Shaun but also Robbie Senior who has purchased AUS 279, the newest Viper in the fleet. Robbie will be teaming up with Brett Sharpe and based on their first few outings will be a highly competitive addition.

OCEAN RACING REPORT | Chris

By its very nature, ocean racing is always a melting pot of experiences and challenges. The driving forces to test your skills in the blue are really more about personal achievement and striving to improve the skill set of yourself and the crew.

Different people take the challenge to another level, and this past season we witnessed both ends of the skill. Highly polished and professional teams like Anthony Kirke on Enterprise NG, the well kitted out Botin Carkeek, taking on amongst others, David Davenport ‘s TP52 Crush in an exciting competition at the top end of the fleet.

There were also very credible efforts from the rest of the offshore fleet, albeit a smaller fleet this year with fallout from the extended cruising after the 2023 Bali race, as

well as some unfortunate dismastings and a variety of technical issues. It was still a great competition and hats off to RPYC’s Hilary Arthure and her team for fitting the Rolex Sydney to Hobart into their calendar mix, a great effort in itself.

The legendary King Canute representing SoPYC, showed her staying power and competed in just about every race in the offshore calendar, as well as river competition. Taking fourth place in the Siska Series against the field is an amazing effort and we salute Matt Rose and his loyal crew – what a fantastic example of commitment and focus!

For those thinking of having a crack at offshore, talk to Matt (Ocean Racing Captain) and the ORC team. Should you need some guidance, we are all here to help you share the experience.

To wrap up, here are the results for the Offshore 23-24 Season.

CRUISING SECTION |

TNO START LINE: Everyone’s a winner

he Cruising Section of the Club welcomes all boat owning members and social guests to be involved in our activities, both power and sail. We pride ourselves as being the only NON-COMPETITIVE section of the club. We do not rely on a start time or a clock. Rather our committee is a small, dedicated group of volunteers who each arrange an outing or event of interest to them with a nautical theme or connection and which is suitable for our group, preferably on the water and by boat.

The Cruising Section Captain Paul Stott is to be thanked for volunteering to lead our small committee in 202324, while recovering from a persistent foot injury and unfortunately without the assistance of a Vice Captain.

Events organised by volunteers for our members have included

• The annual Rottnest Cruise and Lunch in October was organised by Marcel Every. Members hosted others with twenty-eight revellers returning home late in the evening after a long Quokka Arms lunch followed dancing onboard M&Ms with hosts IPC Michael Cook and Power Captain Maria Cook.

• November was off to a flying start with the traditional cruise

to Rockingham for the Beach Horseracing. Convenient overnight security of nine TCYC inshore moorings with evening meals, cocktails and hospitality provided by our hosts, organised by Garry Morrison and attended by thirtyeight members including one yacht, Twitch

• March Long weekend saw change up by MOFSC who hosted the inaugural Mandurah Estuary Extravaganza which included an estuary time trial, Hawaiian Island buffet feast followed on Sunday by Canal Quiz Cruise. Ten boats from our Power Yacht Section were keen to compete in the time trial and their guests participated in weekend activities. Mooring along the collector jetty gave opportunity to socialise with members from RFBYC, FSC and RPYC.

• The traditional June long weekend cruise, this year to Hillarys and organised by Garry Morrison was unfortunately cancelled due to forecast storm warning …a disappointment for the nine boats who had registered.

• Captain Paul is a keen fisherman, organising our members to participate in fishing trips to Shark Bay, Abrolhos, Monte Bellos and Mackerel Islands, either

on boats towed from Perth or organised professional offshore charter boat companies.

Our section also follows with interest SoPYC members who chose to cruise and travel far and wide, following their stories and sharing their passage. In 2022-23 year, club members Kris and Amy Townend fulfilled a lifelong dream to live aboard and homeschool their young family on the 73’ Nordhaven, Spirit of Ulysses, currently enjoying island life in Whitsundays. Dave and Fonny Ewart are enjoying east coast cruising on their 52’ Clipper Enigma exploring anchorages along the NSW Coast making Nelson Bay their home port away from home. Members Harvey Symmons and Reimi Newman are loving the life onboard Bijoux, a Salina 48 Evolution Fountaine Pajot catamaran cruising in Far North Queensland. Tracy Leveridge-Smith and Anthony Smith are proud owners of a 47 Nordhaven, criss-crossing the country in a work life balance with cruising along the east coast. Each of these cruisers have hosted visiting Club members as guests aboard their beautiful boats. These opportunities are just some of the numerous benefits of belonging to our Club and staying connected with likeminded members through our Cruising Section.
