SUTD breaks ground for new campus at Changi By Hoe Yeen Nie | Posted: 14 November 2011 SINGAPORE: The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Singapore's fourth publicly-funded varsity, has broken ground for its permanent campus at Changi. Phase 1, which comprises academic and residential blocks, will be ready by early 2015. With its emphasis on collaboration and inter-disciplinary learning, the SUTD doesn't sound like a traditional university. It doesn't look like one either. Academic disciplines such as engineering and architecture are referred to as "pillars". And they are not housed in standalone buildings but are linked by bridges and common spaces to encourage interaction. The campus design also emphasizes sustainability and makes use of green technology design features to be as eco-friendly as possible. For instance, buildings will be laid out and tilted to maximise natural sunlight and ventilation. There will also be a bio-retention pond to irrigate plants using recycled water. Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony on Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said the school's approach reflects the innovation the government wants in higher education. It's a goal that goes beyond increasing places for students. The government has said it wants to raise the number of places such that 30 percent of Primary One students can attend university.

"We had in mind not only the number of additional publicly-funded places that we could create. We also wanted diversity," said Mr Tharman, who is also the Minister for Finance and Manpower. “We wanted to create new and different pathways, so that taken together with our established institutions, we have a landscape of options for young Singaporeans with diverse interests and abilities to prepare themselves for the opportunities and responsibilities of the 21st century." With a global crisis looming, the next few years could be more difficult for fresh graduates. The SUTD's president, Tom Magnanti, is unfazed. "We're always going to have economic upturns, downturns, but we're going to educate people for the long haul.“ What makes SUTD unique is the depth of collaboration with its two partners, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US and the Zhejiang University in China. MIT's president Susan Hockfield explained: "We're trying to provide an environment where boundary crossing is the norm...crossing boundaries between disciplines, crossing boundaries between countries, and crossing boundaries between the university and industry." Professor Yang Wei, president of Zhejiang University, said the globalisation of the classroom mirrors the globalisation of business. Downtown line news lifts home sales Home buyers have snapped up eight units at the Waterfront Key and six at Waterfront Gold condominiums in the Bedok Reservoir area in the days since last week's news that an MRT station will be built nearby. The developer, Frasers Centrepoint Homes said the units have been sold since the Government announced details of Stage 3 of the MRT Downtown Line last Friday. Experts say projects near this line should experience stronger demand, as with other projects located near MRT stations. First-of-its-kind lifestyle hub in Tampines Singapore - Minister Mah Bow Tan, Minister for National Development and Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC, and fellow Tampines GRC MPs, Mr Masagos Zulkifli (Minister of State, Ministry of Education & Home Affairs), Mr Ong Kian Min, Ms Irene Ng and Mr Sin Boon Ann, unveiled the Tampines Masterplan for 2011-2015 today. The centrepiece of this plan is the proposed development of a Tampines Town Hub; a vibrant place where the residents of Tampines can gather, learn, play and build stronger bonds. Built on the current Tampines Stadium and Sports Hall site, this integrated lifestyle town hub will be the first of its kind in Singapore. Aimed to be a one-stop lifestyle destination, the town hub will be the place for residents to gather for lifestyle, sports and other community and civic services. The town hub will feature a range of facilities and services including a mega Community Club (CC), performing arts theatre, retail shops, food & beverage outlets, fun pool, karaoke rooms, futsal, flea markets and concerts, laser quest and a bowling alley. Major services which are now spread out in various parts of Tampines, will also be clustered in the mega CC. Such major service are the Tampines Regional Library, the HDB branch office, Town Council office and the Northeast CDC. The project, which was initiated by Mr Mah, will be managed by the People's Association(PA). This new initiative is key to providing Tampines residents with the best facilities and environment for active community living.

Home to the first eco-park, cycling town and 3- Generation fitness corner in Singapore, Tampines has also carried out enhanced housing and other neighbourhood improvement programmes over the past five years. Upon the completion of the Downtown Line 3 in 2017, Tampines town will also be well-connected with three Downtown Line stations and an East-West line station. These improvements are due to the continuous upgrading efforts made to meet the changing needs and aspirations of Tampines residents. Complementing the launch of the first integrated town hub in the Singapore heartlands, will be the creation of the website, mytampines.sg. It will serve as a digital portal for the Internet generation living in Tampines to be kept informed and connected with their community and town. Other services and features offered on the website include applications for residents to pay their bills, shop on-line, socialise with their fellow residents, as well as locate different services available in their town. An exhibition, "GROWING OUR TAMPINES" CUM PA 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ROADSHOW, will be held this Saturday and Sunday, 22nd and 23rd January 2011 at the open field next to Tampines Mall. The exhibition also provides an opportunity for the GRC to gather feedback from residents about what kinds of activities, facilities and services they might want in the upcoming town hub.
