Brief The New Visual Language brief was quite different from the other briefs as it is to create a magazine, it had to include work from our past two briefs which were the “City In Flux” and “Earths Artifact”. The magazine is going to be Portrait A4 roughly around 20 or more pages long. It will have to include the past two briefs, Typography, Post-Modernism and Modernism. The magazine will basically show all my work of the past year.

Size - A4 or A3 Portrait Cover - A4 or A3 Portrait Inner

I should produce: - City in Flux - Earth Artifact - Type transcription - New Visual Language - Masthead - Cover design - Contents page - Inner page/s

- Evidence of grid, layout, type and image selection and experimentation

Requirements: - Body of original visual research based upon Modernism / Post Modernism - Evidence of thumbnail visuals and design layouts

- Evidence of multiple solutions and design refinement - Mast head - Broadsheet cover - Inner page

So I needed to gather my best work from the two past briefs and prepare them for the magazine as some needed to be sized down, as they were A3 and landscape. I have the content for the City In Flux section of the magazine, I created a Leaflet showing my culture and heritage, it was quite personal as I explained the way of my culture and my home land. The people who live within, how they live and what they do. For the Earth’s Artifat I had created a lot of infographic/posters so I had a variety of poster to choose from that would appear inside my magazine. I had two sets of posters one that was about Global Warming and harming the Earth, other one about the time difference between the Golden Record 1977 and Modern society like for example the technology, cars, phones and computers.

My typography would also have to be included in the New Visual Language magazine as it was one of best pieces of work this year. The Type is based on circle and a letter being contained inside the circle. I decided to call the type “Pi. I will have to do research on Post Modernism and Modernism and learn the difference so I can add it to the magazine. After I have completed the research process I am going to create the cover and back of the magazine. I will either be using a Post Modern look or Modern look to show I have fully understood each era, I will probably do multiple covers and back to the magazine so I will do try do one of each era and others that will include my work on the front cover.

Modernism began to break through after the 1960’s. Western society began to develop new ways to shape human culture and improve the constructed environment.

Before the concept of Modernism, graphic design and typography was ‘overly decorated’ and elaborate, every possible inch of a typical poster would be filled with imagery and type.

Modernism particularly inspired fine art, it saw a break in the world of the ‘ism’ these art styles include Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Futurism, Brutalism and Surrealism. With the influence making such an impact across multiple creative disciplines Modernism is arguably being the most influential movement of the 20th century. Modernism especially changed the thinking process for communications, graphic design and typography, the style of design shifted drastically from the prior 19th century approach.

Designers of the era of Modernism became to strict, structured grid system with emphasis on negative space, just as important was the use of clean sans-serif type. The idea was to create graphics that were against commercialism, greed and cheapness. Typical typefaces used in the Modernism era include Franklin Gothic, Monotype Grotesque, Futura, and Helvetica Neue.

Post era 1860-1960’s movements in the arts such as Graphic Design. Beginning in the mid-to-late 1960s, when Abstract Expressionism had already been falling out of public favor for some time, many artists turned increasingly toward mixed-media art forms, such as Conceptualism, Super-Realism and Neo-Expressionism, which were precursors to Postmodern art. This shift compelled critics to reconsider the factors that determined an artwork’s intrinsic value. In these new styles, critics noted an unprecedented degree of self-awareness on the part of the artists, as well as a rejection of Modern art’s emotional and spiritual detachment from society. This gave rise to the two distinct schools of Postmodern art theory. Post Modern designers used of aggressive amount of collages, colors,

experimental photography were the norm and were the “style” of post modernism that was able to strike a dramatic design aesthetics. Moving away from the conformities of design. The poster has texture along with quite bold, block colouring, both qualities being characteristics of postmodern design. This cover would later come to influence a style that would come to categorize early postmodern design different typeface in one compositions with little to no visible organization. Experimentation with type, a key feature of post modernist design. Bold, block colouring. A modern twist to traditional materials. Dramatic layout, not conforming to the traditional techniques. The use of geometric shapes going against traditional conventions is a characteristic of post modernism within graphic design.

Modernism Artist El Lissitzky

Lazar Markovich Lissitzky November 23 1890 – December 30, 1941, better known as El Lissitzky. Russian painter, typographer, architect and designer. Born in Polshinok and grew up in Vitebsk. Studied architecture at the Polytechnic in Darmstadt 1909-14, then returned to Moscow where he began to work in an architect’s office.

Modernism Artist Walter Dexel Walter Dexel was a German painter, commercial graphic designer, and transportation planner. Walter Dexel is one of the outstanding exponents of 1920s Constructivism. As a painter Dexel was an autodidact. Walter Dexel worked as a typographer, an advertising designer and designed interiors and stage settings.

Modernism Artist Kurt Schwitters

Kurt Hermann Eduard Karl Julius Schwitters was a German artist who was born in Hanover, Germany. Schwitters worked in several genres and media, including Dada, Constructivism, Surrealism, poetry, sound, painting, sculpture, graphic design, typography, and what came to be known as installation art. He is most famous for his collages, called Merz Pictures.

Modernism Artist Walter Gropius

Walter Adolph Georg Gropius was a German architect and founder of the Bauhaus School, along with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter is one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. Bauhaus, was an art school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design. It operated from 1919 to 1933. At that time the German term literally “house of construction”—was understood as meaning “School of Building”.

Modernism Artist Frank Stella

Frank Stella is an American painter and printmaker, noted for his work in the areas of minimalism and post-painterly abstraction. Stella continues to live and work in New York. Stella began his extended engagement with printmaking in the mid-1960s, From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, Stella created a large body of work that responded in a general way to Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. During this time, the increasingly deep relief of Stella’s paintings gave way to full three-dimensionality, with sculptural forms derived from cones, pillars, French curves, waves, and decorative architectural elements. To create these works, the artist used collages or maquettes that were then enlarged and re-created with the aids of assistants, industrial metal cutters, and digital technologies

Post Modernism Artist

Theo van Doesburg

Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg practiced painting, architecture and poetry he also influenced graphic design and is considered the ‘ambassador’ of the movement De Stijl. Although De Stijl was made up of many members, Van Doesburg was the “ambassador” of the movement, promoting it across Europe. He moved to Weimar in 1922, deciding to make an impression on the Bauhaus principal, Walter Gropius, in order to spread the influence of the movement. While Gropius accepted many of the precepts of contemporary art movements he did not feel that Doesburg should become a Bauhaus master. Doesburg then installed himself near to the Bauhaus buildings and started to attract school students interested in the new ideas of Constructivism. Dadaism, and De Stijl.

Post Modernism Artist Banksy

The English artist known as Banksy has become famous for his graffiti art, which has appeared throughout London, from Los Angeles to Melbourne. Arguably the perfect example of postmodernist art, Banksy’s stenciled images are a mixture of pure vandalism, narcissistic posturing, irreverent humour, vivid imagery if rather mediocre painting, and left-wing politics. One of the most controversial of 20th century painters, his identity remains as yet unknown. His work typically combines humorous, striking imagery with some sort of anti-establishment message or slogan, for instance, his famous silhouette of a demonstrator hurling a flower instead of a Molotov cocktail. His style has sometimes been compared with that of the Parisian street-painter Blek le Rat.

Post Modernism Artist Jasper Johns

An important and influential figure in American art, one of the most successful 20th century painters, Johns, together with Robert Rauschenberg and the composer John Cage, was a leading pioneer of Pop Art during the 1950s. His career took off after his first solo exhibition at the Leo Castelli art gallery in New York in 1958. Since then he has become famous for a series of artworks - involving sculpture as well as painting - depicting commonplace objects - including flags, targets, numbers, beer cans, and others. At times, this has verged on Junk art, and during the late 50s and 60s Johns was an active contributor to avantgarde art in America. He was known for incorporating encaustic paint and plaster relief, as well as real objects, into his oil painting. It was his use of images from popular culture that gave him the label Popartist, although his artistic statements have also led to some of his work being described as Neo-Dada art.

Post Modernism Artist Peter Blake

Peter Blake was a Painter, printmaker, assemblage artist and designer, pioneer of British Pop art, designed album cover for The Beatles’ LP Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band During the late 1950s, Blake became one of the best known British pop artists. His paintings from this time included imagery from advertisements, music hall entertainment, and wrestlers, often including collaged elements. Blake was included in group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and had his first solo exhibition in 1960. On the Balcony (1955–57) is a significant early work which remains an iconic piece of British Pop Art, showing Blake’s interest in combining images from pop culture with fine art. The work, which appears to be a collage but is wholly painted, shows, among other things, a boy on the left of the composition holding Édouard Manet’s The Balcony, badges and magazines.

Post Modernism Artist Wim Crouwel

Willem Hendrik “Wim Crouwel (born 21 November 1928) is a Dutch graphic designer, type designer, and typographer. Between 1947 and 1949, he studied Fine Arts at Academie Minerva in Groningen, the Netherlands. In addition, he studied typography at what is now the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 1963, he was one of the founders of the design studio Total Design (currently named Total Identity). From 1964 onwards, Crouwel was responsible for the design of the posters, catalogues and exhibitions of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1967 he designed the typeface New Alphabet, a design that embraces the limitations of the cathode ray tube technology used by early data display screens and phototypesetting equipment, thus only containing horizontal and vertical strokes. Other typefaces from his hand are Fodor and Gridnik.

Global warming and climate change can both refer to the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system and its related effects. Multiple studies of scientific evidence show that the climate system is warming. More than 90% of the additional energy stored in the climate system since 1970 has gone into ocean warming and the remainder has melted ice, and warmed the continents and atmosphere. If this continues it will start to kill animals that are living in the arctic, it will affect animals such as the Penguins, Polar Bears, Sea Turtles. These innocent animals will become extinct from our wrongs.

There are other ways that we are able to create energy and it does not harm the enviroment like Wind Turbines, Solar Panels also Water Turbines. By using more green energy solutions could save our planet as at the moment a lot of energy is going to waste where as if it is green energy going to waste it doesnt

Modernism began to break through at the end of the 19th century into the

Global warming and climate change can both refer to the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system and its related effects. Multiple studies of scientific evidence show that the climate system is warming. More than 90% of the additional energy stored in the climate system since 1970 has gone into ocean warming and the remainder has melted ice, and warmed the continents and atmosphere. If this continues it will start to kill animals that are living in the arctic, it will affect animals such as the Penguins, Polar Bears, Sea Turtles. These innocent animals will become extinct from our wrongs.
