Rainham Hall Gardens The Rainham Hall Gardens project is to provide a critical role in promoting and consolidating the centre of the physical, commercial, cultural, heritage and environmental regeneration of the Havering Riverside and LiZLaKe would be delighted to be a part of this exciting project.

Experience The team of consultants led by LiZLaKe provides a good mix of specialist experience and depth to fulfill the requirements of the brief and to ensure that this special project for Havering Borough Council (HBC) and the National Trust delivers the requirements and delights the Community of Rainham. LiZLaKe Chartered Landscape Architects and Urban Designers is an award winning practice and has considerable proven experience in the design of public realm projects creating places that are ‘special’, historically and / or socially. We have designed schemes such as the restoration of the Italian terrace for Bentley Priory Museum to pocket parks such as Albany Gardens in Colchester. Our landscape scheme for East Road Development in West Mersea helped our client Mesea Homes win the ‘Sense of Place’ category of the Colchester 2020 RIBA Architectural Awards in 2008. SSG was established in 1985 and has been a full BALI member since 1990. Their client base covers all aspects of Commercial Landscape Construction and includes Local Authorities, Schools, Housing Associations, Landscape Architects, Architects and Engineers, with project sizes from £5,000 to £500,000. Some of the project they have worked on are Stratford Park Bandstand, London E15 for London Borough of Newham, Battersea Park & King Georges Park, Wandsworth for London Borough of Wandsworth and Lytcott Grove Community Garden, London for Southwark Council. They operate their business within reasonable travelling times from their base which means they can comfortably cover most areas of London, the Home Counties and Kent. The Company is managed by two Directors – Mike Stockley and Tim Gowers; both have extensive experience within the industry. Susan Deakin is a Landscape Manager and Ecologist who has worked as an Environmental Consultant since 1981. She has wide experience in Landscape Management, Ecological Surveys and Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments, Habitat Creation and Restoration. She has also provided evidence on the above matters whilst acting as an Expert Witness at Public Inquiry. LiZLaKe has worked with Susan for over 25years on a large number of projects. LiZLaKe has a good track record of public realm projects which involve community consultation. Personnel Liz Lake

Director & Chartered Landscape Architect, will be the director responsible for the project.

Julia Weaver

Landscape Architect, will be responsible for the day to day management, detailed design elements of the project and co-ordinating the sub-consultants on the project.

Alan Pritchard

Graphic Designer, will be responsible for the design and production of the consultation material.

Andrew Budd

Graduate Landscape Architect, will assist our CAD technicians in preparing the drawing outputs for this project.

Rachel Louwinger

Document Controller, will be responsible for the management and distribution of project documentation.

Susan Deakin

Landscape manager and ecologist. Will advise on nature conservation issues & landscape management.

John Phibbs

John Phibbs is a Landscape Historian; he founded Debois Landscape Survey Group Ltd in 1982. He has worked on a number of projects for the National Trust including Wimpole Hall, Ickworth, Blickling and Felbrigg. He is a serving member of both the Conservation Committee of the Garden History Society and the Gardens Committee of the National Trust. LiZLaKe have worked with John on many projects together over the years including Weald Country Park, Essex for Essex County Council, RAF Bentley Priory, Stanmore for VSM Estates and Highclere Park, Hampshire for Highclere Estate.


Project Outputs Phase 1 LiZLaKe will provide • • • • • • • • • • • • •

A Master Plan base from the survey information. Two design options presented as A3 design strategy drawings with photographs of indicative materials and descriptions of associated opportunities and issues. The selected option worked up into a sketch proposal with illustrative 3D sketches and cross sections. A General Arrangement Drawing of the selected option. Research and produce a proposal for a lighting scheme and possible sustainable energy source. Detailed specifications and drawings for the soft landscape works including tree planting. Detailed construction drawings and specifications including levels and drainage. Detailed schedule of works. Location / red line plan (for planning). Design and Access Statement (for planning). Liaison with Tree Officer, English Heritage, Planning Officers and other statutory bodies. Three number client meetings. Three number stakeholder meetings.

Susan Deakin will produce • A Phase 1 Habitat Survey for the site and identify any further surveys that are required. • A management document and plan for maintaining the landscape.

SSG will provide • Consultation services on a day basis for client and stakeholder meetings to ensure the ‘build’ element of project is fully integrated into the proposals process. • A price estimate for the detailed schedule of works.

Project Outputs Phase 2 LiZLaKe will provide • Project management of the construction phase including monthly update reports to the client. • Site monitoring for quality control; half a day, once a fortnight for the duration of the works.

SSG will provide • The labour and materials to construct the proposals. • Construction of the scheme.


Timetable October 2009

Initial Client meeting, preparation of base plan, Stakeholder meeting one, preparation of sketch options.

November 2009

Client meeting two, sketch proposal of selected option, research for lighting and sustainable energy solutions, Phase 1 Habitat Survey, Stakeholder meeting two.

December 2009

General Arrangement plan and supporting planning requirement documentation, Stakeholder meeting three. Initial Phase 1 Habitat Survey.

January 2010

HBC submit planning application,

February 2010

Once planning approval has been received; production of construction drawings including levels and drainage, schedule of works and price estimate. Undertake tree works (outside of bird nesting season).

March 2010

Commence phase 2; construction works.

April 2010

Complete/update Phase 1 Habitat Survey

September 2010

Complete construction works and start Rectification Period.

March 2011 Complete Rectification Period. Note: Planting replacements would normally be for a 12 month period.

As the project unfolds we will make every endeavour to design within the project budget of £220,00 - £280,000 including professional fees as directed by the Client. However, this may depend upon the Client’s design requirements and any unforeseen circumstances. The Phase 1 Habitat Survey is best carried out in the spring (2010). Any additional protected species surveys required as a result of this work have not been included in this tender. However, because tree removal and maintenance work is normally carried out in the winter (outside of bird nesting season) a preliminary survey will be required in the winter of 2009 before any tree works commence. The survey would then be updated in the spring of 2010. The Archaeological watching brief of the site was discussed at the site visit and as it is proposed that National Trust undertake this activity, it is not included in this tender.
