Chartered Landscape Architects | Urban Designers
experience ST BOTOLPH’S PUBLIC REALM, COLCHESTER, ESSEX Experience The team of consultants led by LiZLaKe provides a good mix of specialist experience and depth to fulfill the requirements of the brief and to ensure that this part of the St Botolph’s Quarter will be an attractive, safe, vibrant, walkable and integrated part of Colchester Town Centre. The provision of a sensitive but exciting lighting scheme will promote the public’s enjoyment of these spaces into the evenings and help to sustain a viable evening economy. LiZLaKe Chartered Landscape Architects and Urban Designers are a multi award winning practice and have considerable proven experience in the design of public realm projects creating places that are ‘special’, historically and / or socially. As the landscape consultants responsible for the hard landscape design proposals for the mixed use Colchester Garrison schemes adjacent to the Roman Circus and the public access improvements to the St Botolph’s Priory gardens we are familiar with Colchester and the opportunities and constraints provided by its historically rich urban grain. Our landscape scheme for East Road Development in West Mersea helped our client Mesea Homes win the ‘Sense of Place’ category of the Colchester 2020 RIBA Architectural Awards in 2008. Gardiner & Theobald is a professional consultancy that currently employs in excess of 700 staff providing a variety of services within the property and construction industry. With over 160 years experience in the management of all types of projects, they are proud to be recognised as one of the leading international project and cost management consultants. One of the projects that LiZLaKe have worked together with Gardiner & Theobald Cambridge staff is Clare College for Cambridge University. Ardent Consulting Engineers is a multi disciplinary consultancy which provides transport and infrastructure planning and engineering advice to construction, environmental and development organizations. We pride ourselves on our “can do” attitude, our commitment to work to our Clients’ deadlines and a holistic value led approach. LiZLaKe and Ardent Consulting Engineers have a well established and successful working relationship. We are currently working together on the Public Realm of the residential proposals at Port Lane, Colchester. Susan Deakin is a Landscape Manager and Ecologist who has worked as an Environmental Consultant since 1981. She has wide experience in Landscape Management, Ecological Surveys and Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments, Habitat Creation and Restoration. She has also provided evidence on the above matters whilst acting as Expert Witness at Public Inquiry. LiZLaKe have worked with Susan for over 25 years on a large number of projects. LiZLaKe have a good track record of public realm projects which involve community consultation. From conceptual schemes for urban improvements to fully completed projects some examples are: • Bridge End Garden for Uttlesford District Council • Theydon Bois Green for Epping Forest Conservators • St. Botolph’s Priory for Colchester Borough Council
experience Experience (con’t) LiZLaKe have completed a number of landscape projects which include public art. From writing the initial brief and running the art competition to final selection with our clients and working with the artists to ensure the integration of the art into the public realm. The new Visual Arts Facility provides exciting opportunities to create a series of art spaces, integrated into these important urban spaces from the beginning rather than an ‘add on’ at the end. This will facilitate a much wider scope of possible ideas in terms of art installations. For example the paving surfaces could be chosen to create a clean canvas that could be used as a projection surface for light art. The light art could be interactive and changed regularly to create a regional attraction for the public to visit and see what was currently in place. Some examples of LiZLaKe projects that include public art are: • Massive Orange Object by Nick Turvey for South Bank University, Wandsworth Road. • Mosaic to ‘capture the Roman history of the area’ by Anne Schwegmann-Fielding for Balkerne Heights Pocket Park, Colchester. • Bandstand Railing for Foxhall Gardens, Ipswich Capital Square in Chelmsford is a project which LiZLaKe designed and oversaw the implementation for Barratt Eastern Counties and provides an example of understanding of the requirements of designing connecting public spaces within a mixed use development. The BALI Award adjudicators described Capital Square as a ‘stunning urban courtyard’ and it won a number of national awards for our client. The Visual Arts Facility is at the centre of the Colchester regeneration strategy and creates the new centre piece of the St Botolph’s Quarter. Adjacent to the historic Roman wall that once surrounded the town and close to the St Botolph’s Priory ruins the first Augustinian Priory in the country, the area is full of historical and social importance. This part of the St Botolph’s Quarter deserves a very special urban landscape scheme that draws together all of the history and social experience and takes it forward into a new layer of history for the future. With our wealth of experience in design of key public open space and our proven ability to oversee and deliver projects, we are keen to contribute to the successful delivery of this project. The St Botolph’s Regeneration Area Public Realm Project offers an opportunity to build on our vast experience of engagement, design and delivery. Selected public spaces and urban landscapes prepared by LiZLaKe include: Bentley Priory, Stanmore Bridge End Garden, Saffron Walden Colchester Garrison, Colchester Capital Square, Colchester Close Garden, Saffron Walden Wanstead Park, East London Theydon Bois Green Foxhall Road, Ipswich South Bank University, London Balkerne Heights, Colchester Albany Gardens, Colchester East Road, Wellhouse Green St. Botolph’s Priory, Colchester Clare College, Cambridge

example projects
South Bank University, London This important urban learning and accommodation facility is being transformed to create new accommodation and recreational facilities including the refurbishment of an existing community theatre. LZL were asked by developers Mount Anvil to create a contemporary setting which will enhance the setting of the building, the design included bespoke seating modules and assistance with public art provision which formed part of the section 106 agreement. The scheme is currently being implemented with completion expected in autumn 2008.
Balkerne Heights, Colchester LiZLaKe was commissioned by Barratt Eastern Counties to prepare detailed landscape proposals for a new urban development of 202 town houses and apartments at “Balkerne Heights” located just outside the Roman wall of the historic core of Colchester. Conditions of the outline planning permission were to create a “pocket park” as a high quality focal point of the main square in the centre of the development.
example projects
Capital Square, Colchester Described as “A Stunning Urban Courtyard” by the judges of the BALI Awards, this public fountain courtyard created a focal space within a new mixed-use development of 108 apartments, retail units and a children’s day nursery, close to the centre of Chelmsford. The design style and choice of landscape materials were chosen to compliment those of the adjacent built form, in order to reinforce the overall design concept. The brief was to provide a calm space that would provide a communal area for residents as well as appealing to the wider community. The square is overlooked by the balconies and winter gardens of the surrounding apartments. The scheme is built around two landscaped courtyards which incorporate soft-jet pavement fountains, water channels, a shallow stream for playing, granite setts and Arboresin paving. The scheme is popular with residents and has won a number of prestigious national housing sector/ landscape awards, including the BALI Award for Mainly Hard Landscaping.
Albany Gardens, Colchester LiZLaKe was commissioned by Barratt Eastern Counties to prepare landscape proposals for a residential scheme of 211 new town houses and apartments. Colchester Borough Council’s urban designers proposed that a pocket park should form a focal point within the development and our client responded positively in terms of its commitment to provide high-quality public open space. Our brief was to provide a calm space that would provide a communal garden for residents and the wider community.
example projects
Theydon Bois Green LiZLaKe prepared proposals for Public Open space enhancement work and presented them as options at a Public Consultation Event. LiZLaKe worked together with Epping Forest Conservators Officers to develop strategies for tree removal and replacement, and were in attendance at the consultation event.
Close Garden, Saffron Walden Close Garden is a small walled garden located in close proximity to the historic centre of Saffron Walden and within the heart of the conservation area. The garden is enclosed by listed walls and is within the setting of a Grade 1 listed church. The garden was difficult to access, was unwelcoming due to over shading and was subject to nuisance activity. Consequently it was an underused public space. Working closely with Saffron Walden Town Council, Friends of Close Garden and Uttlesford District Council Access Officer, it was agreed that paths required resurfacing and access to the garden required improvement. The design solution opened up Close Garden both physically and visually. As well as providing access to the garden itself the improvements have created a new, attractive and accessible route to the Church. Existing materials were reused where possible; the project was tendered and brought in within budget. The results have been greatly appreciated by local people and the Town Council and the garden itself now has a greater presence in the town.
example projects
East Road, Wellhouse Green, West Mersea LiZLaKe was commissioned by Mersea Homes to prepare landscape proposals for 2.9 hectares of residential development. Colchester Borough Council’s urban designers proposed that a pocket park should form a focal point within the development and our client responded positively in terms of its commitment to provide high-quality public open space. Our brief was to provide a calm space that would provide a communal garden for residents and the wider community.
