objective Traveling has always been a very important part of my life, and that has had great influence on my way of thinking, acting and designing. I have developed quick adaptation to all sorts of situations and to address difficulties with a positive outlook - which has been a constant not only in my studies but also in my everyday life. Most important, traveling made me very concerned about social issues. I truly believe that architecture (and a positive attitude) can and should be used to improve society.

:: The task is to provide Madrid with a gym with the concept of “luxury“. To my understanding, the most important feature in a building is the light, so I focused on the concept of “luxury light”. :: The project evolves almost completely from the model: being the facade (and the effects that produces in the inside) the most important feature of the design. A system is created to allow light to enter thru the facade, creating a continuous surface to the street while creating an open and colorful space on the inside.

:: The task was to create a Holistic Espiritual Cultural Building: XXI century hiper-monastery:: futurism as mutation, conexion, tecnology, industrial... Monastery as community, knowledge, intercultural... :: The monastery is understood as a living social place, with its main space being the cloister, where all the activities, paths and communications take place. A residential core is created surrounding the cloister, but broken with social spaces. This plug-ings link with the residential web to create a web in which public and private, social and individual interelate.

Madrid :: Beatriz Matos : RubĂŠn Picado :: 08/09 :: The intervention aims to revitalize the adjacent area to the Manzanares River thru a series of objects that give shade and shelter to passersby. As being an area surrounded by significant buildings of Madrid, visuals were taken into account to locate and orient the various pavilions. Based on the effects of the sun rays, a texture that resembles the night sky is created. This allows each pavilion to filter light in a different way, creating different spatial qualities despite having a similar appearance.

:: In order to fulfill the living and working needs of 7 diferent artists, a modular system is developed: A kitchen and living space linked to a corridor is given. Then each artist can pick from a variety of units that would be pinned to the corridor. :: These “corridor houses then are linked into blocks of four, and are placed one on top of the other, giving the image of a chaotic, vibrant and changing building.

:: The architect must generate space using just one gesture:: A hidden exhibition in which the elements relate with the landscape almost unnoticed Dominique Perrault :: The exhibition takes place between the trees: dissapears in the nature and blends within. A mesh that flows among them provides the support for the exhibition to be displayed. At the same time, it curls and twists to create shadow, seats and gathering spaces. It is the only sign that something is happening in the Retiro Park, a piece of art that surrounds visitors and drags them into the exhibition.

:: My final project evolved from a personal experience after spending two months living in Kathmandú as a volunteer. The most shoking thing was the extremely high levels of pollution suffered by the capital citizens. This first-hand experience leaded me to start an extensive research looking for the problems and factors that are responsible for this issue and to analyze the relations between them, looking for a way to tamper the existing resources to improve Kathmandu´s quality of life. :: The project develops a structure created from existing resources, that can change in time, returns the lost identity of the neighborhood and, most important, addresses public awareness about urban waste and its negative effects on the environment. In essence, to improve the quality of life through small interventions that can be located throughout the city.

:: Both the city and society create a careful network in which each factor has a great influence on the other, even if it is not a straightforward relation. For instance, rapid densification produces more urban waste, which accumulates in the street. This leads to mayor traffic issues, more cows, a less hygienic environment and more deaths by car accidents. The mesh blends with society, adapting and evolving to changes in a never ending process. :: The research leads to the conclusion that of all factors that take place in this network, urban waste is the most serious. Only 9.5% of waste is collected. More than 20% ends up in the rivers, and 25% go directly to the streets, from which cows eat and diseases grow. Numbers say that waste is the most critical problem, but also the most hidden opportunity: Changing waste´s concept from “trash” to “material”

:: In essence: Resources that produces tolls which enable interventions that allows actions. Resources understood as neighbors, transport network and existing vehicles, natural materials such as wind, rainwater, sun and above all, street materials, “trash”: plastic bottles, used tires, organic disposals, bamboo leftovers form construction sites… which used and combined in not ordinary ways can be used as structural elements, foundations, surfaces, walls… :: A 3x3 base unit is created using bamboo structure wrapped with walls made of leftover materials: plastic bottles, fabric, knitted plastic bags… Foundations are made with used tires filled with packed earth and all the connections between elements are done with bamboo rope.

:: The neighborhood of Khaldara is selected. Studying the area´s layout, unoccupied spaces are analyzed, identifying those which that are large and accessible enough to intervene in them. Factors such as distance to main roads, surrounding buildings, accessibility and proximity to other patios are taking into account. According to this features, the patios that will house the different activities are identified. These activities are defined by the urban waste collection system, which later will be the urban waste management system: :: Collection point - selective source separation :: Workshops - each material is treated so it can be reused :: Assembly - The new pieces are assembled together to develop new tools.

08 MED: The New Meta Euroasian Diagonal Madrid - Shengzhen :: AIRLAB CITIES RESEARCH GROUP:: 13

:: The very wording of the work description makes this approach quite clear: working in a meta-territory where there is a Super-city consisting of a network of cities: the New Meta-Eurasian City for the 21st Century.

::The general concept of the advanced research is based on the extension of the project done in collaboration with the Metropoli Foundation about the European Diagonal, wanting to re-activate it, focused on the new Eurasian hyper-parameters that have emerged in recent years. The cities are an inseparable part of the global superstructure rebalancing Europe and Asia.
