For Clodagh, who is pictured on a dog-shaped bench anchored by three Yorkshire terriers who just happened to be walking through the Abington House lobby the morning of the shoot, this photo speaks of the unique creativity that has contributed to Clodagh’s award-winning success as an international designer. And for the props augmenting Suzen Heeley’s cover shot, which were found on a top floor of the Jose Robertson Surgical Center’s construction site, her photo illustrates the vast and intricte array of details that go into managing the successful design of a medical center that will serve the health needs of so many.

And these women are just two of the 12 Pioneering Women who are being honored in this issue, each of whom has learned how to combine her creativity and management skills into shaping successful careers in an industry where women remain a minority. It is through their persistence, dedication and ambition, however, that we hope other women will follow in their footsteps to demonstrate that success can be attained in a variety of ways, and through a multiplicity of strengths.

CLODAGH “I design experiences.” Reflecting a design style that is uniquely Clodagh, these three words illustrate her commitment to one that, she says, “Allows everyone to feel alone in a crowd.” Continually looking at new modalities to help people be happy in their surroundings, Clodagh leaves no stone unturned by addressing all of the senses (touch, sight, smell, sound, spirit, and taste) into her environments. “We bring the outside in,” she says. Still, perhaps the best way to experience the uniqueness of her work is to step into the properties, themselves. 6 • www.sokolmediaonline.com

ON THE HIGH-LINE At Abington House, for example, Clodagh’s vision and mission for this 33-story 300- plus residence building on the High Line was to create an environment with a sense of place dedicated to the wellness and joy of its residents, staff and visitors. Capturing the muscular intrigue of the Highline and referencing it in the interior finishes, Clodagh was inspired to place multi-stemmed burches and specimen trees on axis with the main entry. “This, in addition to the plantings on the Highline reflecting a garden in the sky, allow people to enjoy the seasons as they exit and enter,” Clodagh says.

As the first luxury 26-story high-rise on the High Line, the Caledonia made its mark in historic Chelsea by selling out over half of its condominiums in just eight weeks. With city and river views, the 10,000 square foot lobby boasts a skylight space flanked by a 15 ft cascading water fall and reflecting pool which runs the entire length of the lobby. Custom art which enhances the unique ambiance of the space lines the vast walls, including sculptural backlight tree grates. A cozy library designed for Assouline Publishing House forms a waiting room at one end of the lobby, complete with a working fireplace and custom bookshelves. An additional children’s room, party room, and Equinox gym, all designed by Clodagh, complete the public space. Photos © Eric Laignel

RECTOR PLACE Once the Related Companies chose to reintroduce this 27-year-old Battery Park City building at 225 Rector Street to the market, Clodagh was granted license to renovate all of the interiors and common spaces. Hosting 181-residences and 15,000 square feet of common usage area including a children’s playroom, fitness center, a common roof terrace with sun chairs and barbecues, and a large rooftop ‘cabana’ with prep kitchen, powder room and dining for eight, Clodagh created a soothing environment that would enable residents to still feel ‘nomadic’ within the building itself. Based upon the concept of hospitality, Clodagh incorporated modalities such as feng shui into the lobby which sports burnished metal that frames the concierge desk, a rock and water feature, a 10-foot-high mirror and a wall mounted flower arrangement. Further, the corridor carpeting is designed by Clodagh, and the room that houses the building’s pool is fitted with wooden window treatments and spa-like furnishings. Its fitness center had walls removed and an airy staircase is installed in its place, while the roof deck is paired with an indoor rooftop lounge for entertaining. The new children’s playroom has durable floors and walls that are safe to write on, and the apartments offer a choice of custom kitchen and bathroom options also designed by Clodagh. www.sokolmediaonline.com • 9

SANTA MONICA Tucked next to the glamorous Viceroy Hotel, one block from Santa Monica Beach and the iconic, much photographed and filmed Santa Monica Pier, this ninety-two unit condominium building offers a wealth of amenities, and some of the most avant-garde details in the United States. Here, Clodagh carefully executes her design mantra “everything you need and nothing more than what you need” throughout this residential building by infusing her minimalist interiors with natural elements. Using nothing extraneous or superfluous, yet with all the elements included and all the senses addressed, she created textured, sensuous and warm spaces for circulating, lounging, meeting, playing, exercising, thinking, living, “And, that most important aspect of our life, sleeping,” she adds. With careful use of integrative design in which Feng Shui, biophilia, biogeometry, and the beauty of low maintenance materials are celebrated, the building has been planned to enhance the lives of its residents and their guests, delivering timeless design, lasting value, and a sense of community. Photo © Daniel Aubry

MIRAVAL SPA Based upon Clodagh’s mantra of “Life Enhancing Minimalism”, the Miraval Life in Balance Spa in Tuscon, Arizona, was designed to mirror an authentic experience of the Arizona desert through its strong connection to the spirit of its rugged landscape. On the entrance wall of the spa building, for example, there is a giant symbol in oxidized steel and healing copper with a turquoise stone center, announcing to visitors that they are approaching the gate to wellness and the fifth world. The massive stucco walls of the spa are colored the rich tone of mesquite bark, blending into the desert, and all the senses and elements have been enlisted in a cavalcade of design and natural elements. Built in harmony with the healing power of its Sonoran desert surroundings, the spa transforms its guests both physically and emotionally, creating balance and promoting a sense of well-being. “We work a lot with symbolism and sacred symbols, while infusing respect for sensuality throughout the spaces we design,” Clodagh says. “Essentially, we are playing with the mind, providing the healthiest and most stress-free environments possible. I’m really a simple person,” she adds, “I like nothing but the best!” Photos © Ken Hayden

I advocate for forwardthinking, patientcentered healthcare design innovation, and MSK provides me with an ideal environment to put this into practice.

Suzen L. Heeley As the Executive Director, Design+Construction at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center [MSK] in New York City, Suzen is responsible for the design of an ongoing $2 billion capital program, comprised of new construction and renovation projects in over 30 locations throughout the New York tri-state area.

Josie Robertson Surgery Center under construction

Her past work in architectural/design consulting and as an owner’s representative for innovative healthcare, environmental, interior and exhibit design for Fortune 500 corporations and healthcare systems has not only earned her many design awards, but has made her ideally suited for her responsibilities at MSK. “I advocate for forward-thinking, patient-centered healthcare design innovation,” she says, “and MSK provides me with an ideal environment to put this into practice.” Specially, Suzen is currently managing MSK’s Josie Robertson Surgery Center (JRSC), a first-of- its-kind freestanding outpatient and short-stay cancer surgery facility. Due to open in January 2016, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Josie Robertson Surgery Center will offer a seamless experience for both patients and their caregivers, providing them with exceptional care using the latest in surgical technology in a serene and beautiful environment.

Made possible by a generous commitment from the Robertson Foundation, the (JRSC), upon completion, will form a 16- story, 179,000-square-foot building on York Avenue between East 61st and 62nd Streets, and will feature 12 operating rooms equipped to provide technologically sophisticated surgical care, including minimally invasive and robot-assisted procedures, on an outpatient basis. “This technology, along with the expertise of MSK’s surgeons and support staff, will allow the Center to perform cancer surgeries that have typically required hospitalization but that now can be performed safely on an outpatient basis with a single overnight stay,” Suzen says. MSK is one of only a handful of cancer hospitals offering this type of leading-edge surgery. Since patient and family engagement is central to the JRSC experience, education, preoperative preparation, and technological innovation will help patients and

families participate in their own care. An online patient portal and mobile device application, for example, will help them prepare for the day of surgery, permitting interactions with their team of healthcare professionals as well as giving them the ability to ask questions and monitor their post-surgery progress. Further, a real-time location system will enable patients and caregivers to move freely around the JRSC rather than remain tethered to waiting rooms. Twenty-eight private postoperative recovery rooms with private bathrooms will also offer sleeper sofas and recliners for caregivers. Essentially, the facility is being designed to encourage patients to get out of their rooms and ambulate, and to engage them and their families in actively participating in their care both in the facility and at home post-discharge. As a U.S. Green Building Council LEED Accredited Professional, and as an active participant in the Healthy Building Network and the MSK Green Team, Suzen is dedicated to promoting sustainable, environmentally responsible design. It is no wonder, then, that MSK has just been named by Practice Greenhealth as one of the Top 25 sustainable hospitals in the nation. “We are dedicated to responding to the connection between health and the constructed environment, Suzen adds.
