Dexter M. Ferry Jr. Cooperative House at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York was designed to be a very innovative building program for its time in the 1950s. The 24 students who would live here would learn basic life skills like cooking, cleaning, and maintaining the building. My group chose to keep the dorm program and expand on the innovative thoughts behind the original design. We designed a large garden space with a greenhouse for the residents to grow their own produce year-round. In addition to that, we implemented a rain and greywater harvesting area that will provide them with clean irrigation water. With an expansion of the lower level, we implemented more communal spaces that are open to the public. In the expansion of the upper level, we implemented more private spaces that still allow for the residents to congregate. We also designed unique bedrooms that allow students to close a sliding door in between their double rooms creating single room spaces with at least 50 percent of the beds accessible.

I have burrowed the library into a hill to block out noise from the freeway which allows for a new practice of what would otherwise be a plain rooftop. This walkable hill allows for a more elevated experience while also turning the building exits into courtyards that connect interior spaces to exterior spaces. I have also designed a more physical aspect to this library; a 7,150 square foot regulation sized basketball gym for the enjoyment of the community. This incorporates a different aspect of the library allowing for the expansion of the demographic of people who will visit the library.

I call this design “Expansion” because a library is a place to expand one’s knowledge. The library I designed on Apache Boulevard, east of the 101 freeway, houses over 18,000 square feet of modernized library space with a large multipurpose meeting room and large teen and family areas.

Orange Build is a Design-Build studio that focuses on students being involved in and learning all the steps of a real-life build. Our build was one of ASU’s new outdoor classrooms on the Polytechnic campus. We were partnered with CORE Construction for this build. While observing the beginning process of the build, my studio group was tasked with building one of the designs 9 bay modules at 3” = 1’ scale. This model took nearly 5 weeks as we dealt with changing designs and learning the equipment we were working with in the woodshop. When complete, our model was transported to the Polytechnic campus for a groundbreaking ceremony. On its way back to the Tempe campus, it was tragically destroyed. My group was again tasked with building the 3” = 1’ model and I was given the responsibility of project manager. This time we would build the entire design which would be twice as much work as the last model. Due to a limited time frame as the semester came to a close, we had to step it up a notch and make quick design decisions. This model only took us 3 weeks and was more easily transportable as we designed it to come apart. Design 3” = 1’ Model 2

Orange Build,
After our first Design-Build structure began to take shape, our studio was given the opportunity to design an entrance pavilion for the site. It used the same bays as the original design except with only 2 bays instead of 9.
Andre House, Nightly Shelter
Andre House is a ministry that provides services to the homeless and poverty stricken populations in the greater Phoenix area. The services they provide include: laundry, showers, clothing, and daily dinner services. We were tasked to design them a shelter to house the homeless overnight. My design includes 40 men’s beds and 40 women’s beds. The shelter features many windows to bring in natural light as well as a sense of freedom. Also included was an office space, a security/check-in desk, and plenty of storage space. A green space is located just outside the entrance to the shelter for guests who may have furry friends visiting the shelter with them.

Andre House, 90-day Shelter
Just to the north of Andre House is an empty lot that we chose to use as an additional site. With my design I chose to create a 90-day shelter for domestic violence victims which makes up a large percentage of the homeless population. This center would help these victims feel safe with around-the-clock security and community amenities that will help them start to heal from both mental and possibly physical traumas. The community amenities include: full-size kitchen with attached multi-purpose room, library, medical care rooms, offices for therapy sessions, a hair salon, laundry rooms on both dwelling levels, a daycare with playground, game room, and a large, fenced green space for furry friends. Help with budgeting is also available to get people on a pay-what-you-can rent schedule. With fully furnished studios, single bedrooms, and units with two bedrooms; both single individuals and small families can be accommodated. Each unit has an individual mailbox to make the space feel more like home and give a form of contact for possible jobs. It’s a space for people to feel safe until they can get back on their feet.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our studio separated into groups and designed outdoor classrooms for ASU’s many different campuses. My group was given the northern half of the West Campus.

ASU Outdoor Classroom, Schematic Design
We followed the given constraints of designing modular pieces that had to be made with triangular structure. We also kept in mind a budget range in which we proposed a two phase design. For our site we chose a long barren space in between the Herberger Young Scholars Academy and a large, unused field. We designed 3 main structures as our modules. The landscaping was also addressed with the proposal of a sculpture garden. Together this created a large, serene, gathering space that this campus lacked while bringing new life to an unused field.

This design features a gallery space with a 6 story hanging art piece, a restau rant with a full bar, a spacious 250 seat theater, a rooftop bar with views of the surrounding city, and a balcony space to The physical design was inspired by the exterior of the Nelson Atkins Museum with translucent panels on the exterior. The interior of this design was inspired by the Burton Barr Central Library with The character behind Roosevelt Row was a focal point to assist in making this project feel like a piece of the Roosevelt Row district. The program layout was inspired by my time working at ASU’s Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium.
