The magazine, created by Sean O’Leary, was started in Spring of 2016 as part of his senior thesis research project at Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne. The thesis aims to market Indiana state parks through a comprehensive and visually striking advertising strategy. The main deliverable for the thesis is the Trail Mix Indiana magazine but also includes a website and several other print pieces. Trail Mix Indiana is a magazine highlighting state parks, lakes and other DNR properties in the state of Indiana. The goal of Trail Mix is to inspire young adults to explore what their state has to offer through the use of design, illustration and photography. By creating feature articles for properties, readers are presented with a more engaging reading experience. The incorporation of the state’s name and outline allows for the magazine to be expanded upon for use in other states if need be. The name Trail Mix was derived from the mix of trails that the Hoosier state has to offer. The title of the magazine was picked because its playfulness would be well received by outdoor enthusiasts, and the words were indicative of its contents and theme. I hope you enjoy the magazine as much as I enjoyed putting it together!

Thank you! A special thanks goes out to the outstanding instructors at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne for their direction, support and the superb education they provide, as well as the students and alumni that helped and gave feedback along the way. Thank you also to the members of the Indiana DNR for the preservation and development of state parks. I am gracious of the feedback and information I received early in my project from Christie Sorrels, business services program director.

Each one of the nine lakes at Chain O’ Lakes State Park has its own personality and allure. From canoeing on the scenic sky-blue water of Long Lake to early morning fishing in a small motorboat on the calm Rivir Lake and all of the connecting streams between, you are sure to find a great weekend paddling, rowing, or boating on the waters at Chain O’ Lakes State Park.

Long Lake A small ripple across the waters of Long Lake is formed by a cool breeze blowing in from the west. The reflected sunlight shimmers over the top of the water as you paddle along the brilliant blue lake. The vibrant trees of Glacial Esker Nature Preserve on the east shore shield the lake, while steep slopes follow the lake’s edge to the west. Whether you start your canoeing adventure from Miller Lake or launch your kayak from the north shore, Long Lake is a must-visit Chain O’ Lakes location for paddle and boating enthusiasts.

Finster Lakes The Finster Lakes are two gorgeous lakes hidden behind the old Stanley School at Chain O’ Lakes State Park. You can catch a glimpse of these scenic locations while driving down the nearby winding roads, but the best views can be found while hiking along the twisting paths of Trail 8, which run between the two lakes and circles around the northern most of the two lakes. From the perimeter of both lakes you will be rewarded with a picture perfect view of the skies reflected on the unbroken waters of these remote lakes.

Sand Lake Sand Lake is perfect for fishing in your canoe, from a small motorboat or on one of several fishing docks. Set your alarm early in order to fully experience the beauty of Sand Lake at dawn. The morning dew and hovering fog are only broken by jumping fish near the shores of the lake. Cast your line and reel in bass, bluegill and other common small gamefish. Silent, tranquil waters on a summer morning make for the best conditions to relax, fish and enjoy the fresh air of the Indiana outdoors at Chain O’ Lakes State Park.

Situated on the outskirts of Bluffton, Indiana, Ouabache State Park is often little known to outsiders, making it Bluffton’s hidden gem. While the main allure of Ouabache is the herds of bison that it fosters, the 100 foot fire tower in the middle of the park is a must see. The tower may not be a destination for people afraid of heights, but the views are definitely worth the climb for anyone brave enough to venture to the top. It may also help those weary of heights that the metal frame of the structure and wire mesh that lines the handrails help to put your mind at ease as you begin your ascent. From the tower, you’ll be astonished with a view that breaks through the treetops and gives sight to the entirety of Oubache State Park. Peer out above the 20-acre buffalo enclosure that cuts through dense forest, or catch the sun’s reflection on Kunkel Lake as it shimmers across the ripples of a cool afternoon breeze. If you turn your view to the northwest you will have a clear view of the Bluffton Courthouse and surrounding buildings. Even though it may be daunting to climb up nearly 100 steps to get to the top, the view is worth it to say the least. The tower boasts having one of the best views in Bluffton and the surrounding region, and although the panorama of the Hoosier countryside is beautiful at all times of the year, the best time to climb the tower is in the early fall, right as the leaves start to change colors. The surrounding forests, small hills and farmlands are transformed into a vibrant landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. From the top of the tower you will experience a view that can’t be found anywhere in the surrounding area.

33

Pokagon State Park’s Trail 3

The sun peeks through the fog during a brisk morning jog while a bird sings somewhere in the distance. The stillness of the morning is broken by a fish jumping close to the shore of Lake Lonidaw. Nearly 14 miles of wide-open trails wind through the 1,260 acres that make up Pokagon State Park. The trails take you past creeks, fields, meadows, towering tress, and through the Potawatomi Nature Preserves. While you may be inclined to jog through the crisp, fresh air of the scenic wilderness, taking a slower pace will give you the chance to see some of the creatures and critters living along the different paths. For an even closer glimpse of the park’s wildlife, visit the Nature Center just off of Trail 1 in the Southwest region of the park. At the center you will see reptiles and amphibians likes salamanders, snakes and turtles, a viewing area for wild birds, and displays about the park’s interesting history. The park staff at the center can offer information about the park’s animals, history and the surrounding area. Keep your eyes open! Just off some of the trails you may find the unique stone and log structures that were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The “boys of the CCC” lived and worked at Pokagon from 1934 to 1942 and their work accents the wooded hills, open meadows and lush wetlands. Finish your weekend getaway with boating, fishing, swimming and beautiful, scenic sunsets along Lake James or Snow Lake. Created by melting glaciers 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, these natural lakes are the perfect location to watch the glow of the setting sun shimmer and glisten across the quiet waters.

Scenic Pitstop Check out Hell’s Point on Trail 3 for a treetop view. Located 1123 feet above sea level, Hell’s Point used to be at the base of a glacier. You are bound to see something amazing while looking out from the highest spot in Pokagon State Park.

far less cumbersome to navigate after an exciting day of climbing ladders and hiking through hollows. The walls of Turkey Run Hollow tower high above the flat creek bed that Trail 6 follows. The creek flows north from the pine tree forest near the Roost Cabin, through the winding Turkey Run Hollow, and joins Sugar Creek at Sunset Point - a breathtaking walk just a few minutes from Turkey Run Inn. The best time to visit Turkey Run Hollow is later in the day. You’ll want to check out the view at Sunset Point that opens up from the northern end of Trail 6.

1

As the sun lowers and the golden hour begins, the warm yellow light of the setting sun bathes the rocky outcropping in gorgeous colors. If the weather is just right, fog rolls out from the opening of Turkey Run Hollow as the cold breeze from the hollow mixes with the warm air on Sugar Creek. You can enjoy Sunset Point from the sandy beach that lines the creek, or sitting on a comfy bench above at the scenic overlook. Regardless of your vantage point, the view will be astounding to say the least.

Mix in a workout to your journey by taking a longer hike!

2

After crossing Sugar Creek on the iconic suspension bridge, hook a left and head towards Trails 3 and 5 for the most intense and scenic workout that Turkey Run has to offer. Shortly after passing the Ice Box, a tall open space with one of the oldest and tallest trees in Turkey Run, you’ll want to turn right and head towards part one of your workout: warming up on the ladders. You’ll have to climb up two stories on the towering ladders, sometimes through water, to get to the next leg of your journey. Now is a good time to take a break because you’ll be following Trail 9 as it climbs up a series of stairs (140 steps in total!) to get to one of

3

the highest points in the park. Don’t be fooled by their appearance! Although the stairs may not look colossal, the tall steps can be tiring for even the greatest stair master. If you forget to take a break before trying to climb to the top of the

King of the beasts. Improving upon one of the most celebrated lenses in the Canon EF line is no easy feat, but Canon has done just that. The all-new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM increases the speed, performance and optical quality of the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM while maintaining all of the characteristics that have made it a legend for professionals and advanced amateurs alike.

Lenses This lens construction consists of one fluorite and five ultra-low dispersion optical elements which help deliver the sharpness and reduced aberrations. The IS II Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to 4 stops of correction at all focal lengths and features two modes for stabilization of still objects and while panning to follow moving subjects.

This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 3.9’ (1.2m) at all zoom settings so you can shoot close to your subject even in smaller spaces. Like all Canon L-series lenses, this telephoto zoom is dust and moisture resistant and designed to keep on going even in the most challenging of environments. An ultrasonic focusing motor provides fast, smooth and silent autofocus action.

staircase, you will be very happy to find a bench waiting for you at the end of your ascent. The next step in your four-part Turkey Run workout routine is a nice cooldown. You’ll walk the rest of the one mile that makes up Trail 9 as it takes you through Boulder and Falls Canyons. Boulder Canyon is exactly what it sounds like: a canyon filled with large boulders. You may wish to take a brief detour from your hike to climb a couple boulders and make your way to the waterfall’s base at the northern end of the canyon. If you’re visiting the park in the spring, the melting snow makes for a nice crest of water flowing over the top of the waterfall. The last part of your journey is the hike back to the suspension bridge. Trails 5 and 9 connect at the end of Falls Canyon and Trail 5 continues for about a mile along the shores of Sugar Creek. The trail leads out from the forests on the west side of Turkey Run State Park and quickly becomes the picturesque cliffs that make the center of Turkey Run so popular. The bright, orange and yellow sandstone cliffs are a stark contrast from the surrounding green foliage. You may be inclined to think that it’s all easy going from here, but it’s all uphill after you reach the Ice Box. Don’t worry too much about this climb, though, because once you pass the opening for Rocky Hollow you will be rewarded with a refreshingly cool breeze from deep within the ravine. From here it’s a short walk across the bridge and a much less intense climb up the stairs and out of the park to finish your workout.

Clifty Falls State Park is a vibrant landscape tucked away in the hills of Jefferson County, Indiana. Winding trails cut through the forest on either side of the canyon and open up to the stone bed of Clifty Creek. Trail 2 at Clifty Falls twists through the canyon and branches off to the bottom of several of the iconic waterfalls that can be found in the park. This popular trail follows the creek bed of Clifty Creek as it flows from Clifty Falls and out the south end of the park. The best entry point to Trail 2 is by Tunnel Falls, which is one of the more central areas of the park. The trails here are easier to navigate and have a lot more to see in the surrounding area when compared to the trailhead at the southern end of Trail 2. Take a break from the sunshine peaking through the leaves and reflecting off the water to venture through tunnels, climb above the mountain tops in an observation tower, or discover ancient fossils in the creek bed. Breathtaking views of the lush forest that climbs over the mountains of Clifty Falls and the Madison area are a wonder that most people wouldn’t expect to find in Indiana. A weekend of hiking, creek-walking, climbing and beautiful sights are waiting for you at Clifty Falls State Park.

Scenic Pitstop This beautiful overlook of Clifty Falls can be found at the beginning of Trail 7.

Entrance to Donaldson Cave from Trail 4

Novice cavers need not apply for a journey through Donaldson Cave. Spring Mill is home to many caves and while you can take a boat tour through Twin Caves, the real adventure is the expedition from Bronson Cave to Donaldson Cave. The two connecting caves have recently been opened to experienced spelunkers after being closed for eight years due to White-nose Syndrome (WNS) threatening bat populations in the area. The joint cave system takes hikers along a stream that flows from Bronson Cave to Donaldson, and ranges from areas of ankle-deepr to waist-deep water. What makes the journey particularly rewarding are the vast open rooms that can be found towards the Donaldson entrance. These open spaces house large boulders to climb over, and rushing water to swim through. People adventurous enough to make the journey will be faced with waterfalls and obstacles to climb at some points, but do not require extensive equipment to overcome. Those wishing to embark on a journey through the cave system must register in advance through the Indiana Karst Conservancy (IKC) and complete online training that explains decontamination procedures established to prevent the spread of WNS.
