WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE VISUAL ARTS THIS MONTH AT SOLEBURY SCHOOL
THE ARTS FESTIVAL 2019 Solebury School celebrates the Arts with its week-long Arts Festival every year. The art show in Abbe and various performances bring the community together in a celebration of both the performing and the visual arts. Throughout the week, special art activities are scheduled for students and faculty. Students enjoy theatrical and musical performances by well known artists. Professional artists, musicians, and performers are invited to offer workshops in their crafts during the week. Several art students over the years have also run their own workshops in the various arts. We hope you will attend both the performance events as well as the workshops and enjoy the week long immersion in the arts here at Solebury School. Image:Emma Salerno
THE SCHEDULE OF FANTASTIC EVENTS Monday 15th Recording Studio Visit A trip to Morningstar Recording Studios to record with Grammy-winning engineer Glen Barrett. Students will leave at the start of school and return in the afternoon.

Jeremy Kipp Walker Jeremy will have a talk with us on the 15th at 12:30 pm – please see THE BIG SICK or least one of his films so you can have TWO QUESTIONS for him in our SKYPE. His father and his sister graduated from THE SOLEBURY SCHOOL. He is living in LA and is taking time to talk with us.

Assembly Michael Dennis “Architecture, Urbanism, and the Environment” 2:45 - 3:30 PAC Michael Dennis is a principal of Michael Dennis & Associates in Boston, and Emeritus Professor of Architecture at MIT, where he taught Urban Design and Theory. He was the 1986 Thomas Jefferson Professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia, the 1988 Eero Saarinen Professor of Architecture at Yale University, and the 2006 Charles Moore Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan. In 2011, he was awarded the CNU Athena Medal for his contributions to urbanism. He has lectured widely and is the author of Court and Garden: From the French Hôtel to the City of Modern Architecture. His forthcoming book on town planning is titled: Temples and Towns: A Study of the Form, Elements, and Principles of Planned Towns. “Architecture, Urbanism, and the Environment” Today we face an environmental crisis that is unprecedented for the last 4,000 years. Most of this is caused by the lifestyle of the developed world. If we are to survive we must rethink how we live---especially our architecture and our cities. We need to live smaller, more simply, and more compactly. We need to consume less, drive less, and waste less. In other words, there is a direct connection of architecture, urbanism, and environmental problems. Today’s students will have the responsibility for understanding this predicament and effecting change.

WORKSHOPS! Thursday, April 18 From 1:30pm to 3:00pm, everyone can take part in the following workshops... Hip Hop Dance Workshop with Tanishq Joshi Come to this workshop dressed and ready to move, Tanishq is going to have you hipping and hopping before you know it! Pottery Demonstration with Sal Annunziato Sal will demonstrate his favorite techniques for working with clay, and talk about how he went from A George School student, to college, Â became an apprentice for a Ceramic Wood fire Master, and an Artist in his own right. After the demonstration if time allows, you can feel free to get your hands dirty and try it out for yourself. Tie Dye with Amel Ouji Tie dye T-shirts w/Amel Ouji. Amel will be teaching you the finer points of Tie dye, cool twists, & lots of colors so that you can walk away with your own unique colorful t-shirt! Indigo Dyeing/Shibori with Susan Mania In the workshop students will learn the basic chemistry of indigo and experience the magic of watching green turn to blue when oxidized in the air. The Japanese technique of shibori resist- dyeing is my technique of choice for workshops. The students will fold their fabric and secure it with clamps. Then it is placed into the dye vat for a few seconds, taken out, unclamped and shaken to oxidize.

Drums with Rich Scannella Rich Scanella has played/toured or recorded with some of the most iconic artists of our time, including: Bruce Springsteen, Lady Ga Ga, Bon Jovi, Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Antony (Van Halen), Adam Duritz (Counting Crows), Joe Elliot (Def Leopard) and more! His career has brought him all over the world. Come enjoy Rich's stories, listen to him play and  play with him, if you like! Get some some tips, ask some questions and have an all around good time! Sound Music Michael Melchiondo Alum Michael Melchiondo ‘18 is back and will introduce you to the creative sound/noise music process. This workshop is unlike any other type of music making you may have ever experienced. Learn about looping sounds through resistors and so much more. This small workshop demo will give you the opportunity to try your hands at this creative sound music making process. Pen, Brush and Ink With Lindsay Neubeck Inky is an interactive ink filled workshopstudents will be challenged using the dreaded, un-erasable medium of ink. A portion of the session will be of 3 rapid fire art games using a combination of India ink, and ballpoint pens will allow students to embrace the art of mistakesthen winding down to a more peaceful session of creating a final inked-out piece of art.
THE WORKSHOPS, cont... Knitting with Hanna Hanna will teach you to knit or help you along on a project you’ve already started. Help make a blanket for a person in need! Make a scarf for a friend! Make a sweater for yourself!
Photograms with Kelli Photograms... w/ our very owen Kelli Abdoney. A Photogram is a direct process, Participants will arrange interesting objects on a sheet of photographic paper and then will expose the image to light. After that the magic begins when you develop your image and the images appear on your blank white paper right before your eyes! Very fun process! Feel free to bring cool objects from home to use in your photogram
Watercolor Collage with Patiī Singer . Pat Singer is a local artist working in many mediums, but Watercolor is the main focus of her recent work. She has been incorporating her watercolors into her graphic designs and now collage. Pat will introduce you to the wonderful experience of painting with watercolors and then cutting the watercolors up too create beautiful collage designs
THE WORKSHOPS, cont... Chinese Brush and Ink Calligraphy With Maria Sun Maria will show you the traditional Brush and Ink Calligraphy of China. Calligraphy was considered to be the highest art form. Introduction to Digital Illustration and ibisPaint With James Riley 'A brief introductory demonstration on ibisPaint for those who are interested in learning the ropes of digital art, using art-based applications, and the world of digital illustration in general.' We have two ipads available for the workshop, but if you have your own please bring it to the workshop. You will need to download ibisPaint it costs $5 but the art department will cover the cost (pretty good deal) So don’t forget to bring your ipad. Carter Winter- a Career in Film Alumni Carter Winter (2003) will guide you through his experience with acting, writing, and producing, which began at Solebury and continues today in New York City. Pet Portraits with Cayley Plutnick Students will be loosely guided through a creative exploration of quick, colorful, and expressive animal portraits. In other words, using photos of their pets, favorite animals, or images provided the day of, the students will learn how to complete a painting without fear in 80 minutes. They will learn how to set up a composition, choose a color palette, and then have fun with the process! The goal is to build self confidence and learn that painting doesn't have to be hyper-realistic or accurate (although if that's the style they connect to most, that's ok!). Each student will come home with a finished 8x8" acrylic painting of their animal of choice

Paper Mache Birds with Lisa Schuler - Fine Art Join Lisa for some fun with nature and decorate your own hand made paper mache bird. These little feathered friends are the perfect handheld 3D object to texturise and adorn with color and shade. Lisa has been painting nature for twenty years and volunteers at the Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Ray King Presents Ray King a talk Ray King is an accomplished artist who uses the natural phenomena of light as it interacts with glass and optics as an art medium. By creating dynamic interactions with the sun and refracting light into colors -- rainbow like emanations that shift and change as the viewer moves or as the light source changes -- King creates an environment that appeals to viewers’ sense of wonderment and delight. Glass, King’s primary medium, provides a durable, yet transparent, surface that can be laminated with other materials to dynamically interact with light (and create safety glass as well). King specializes in working with high-tech holographic and dichroic laminate films and coatings that bend, or split, light wavelengths into a wide spectrum of brilliant colors. He also has vast experience creating tectonic, tensile structures made of stainless steel cable and hardware that articulate and give definition to the artwork. King began working with stained glass in the early 1970s, and has exhibited his work internationally since 1976, including exhibitions in Taiwan, Italy, Japan, England, Spain and France. Major permanent installations of his work have been commissioned throughout the United States and abroad. All are site-specific and inspired by the surrounding space and landscape to create a unique sense of place and identity.
THE WORKSHOPS, cont... Painting in Virtual Reality with Jane Lafarge-Hamill Come play and create images in a 3D virtual world. Jane will introduce you to some environments she has created and will teach you how to draw images you can walk through… This crazy cool experience happens off campus and you will need to get out of class 10 min early so you have travel time to get to Jane’s Lambertville studio. Lighting Design for your Dance Party with Jason Burns Come learn how to create the Ultimate Dance Party lighting with Jason Burns. Music makes a dance party but lighting makes it the Ultimate Dance party. Intro to Screenwriting with Kiara Fox Find out how your favorite movies are made and sold while getting the chance to help create an original group piece! It is going to be a relaxed fun period with air conditioning and FOOD! You will even get to see popularized work such as the original pitch book for ‘Stranger Things’ back when it was still called Montauk. We only have 6-8 spots so sign up fast! Origami With Nils Nyberg Nils will show you how to turn simple folds into wonderful origami objects. All skill levels are welcome, Nils will start off with a simple design and move to more complex challenging designs.
What YOU need to do... Students will be signing up (in the dining hall) for a workshop during the scheduled Thursday workshop times. Act quickly when you see the sign up sheets as your favorite choices may fill quickly. All students are required to sign up for a workshop. Try something new. Try something creative! If you add your name to the list beyond the amount listed for the workshop, expect to be moved where there is more room.
Faculty are needed to supervise and assist during the workshops. You are also welcome to sign up for your first choices but please be aware that we need someone with every workshop. We will do our best to place you in your first choice. Try something new. Try something creative!
